EDITOR’S NOTE
elcome to one of my favourite editions of the year when we get the chance to go all-out summer crazy. It might seem strange when we live in sunshine virtually all year round (and spend a good deal of time moaning about it too). But I just love the thought of summer vacations – whether it be just a few days off work to top up the tan or a long-haul flight to far away places. Summer always brings a sense of fun and a little bit of enchantment – perhaps a hangover from those childhood holidays for which my sisters and I began planning months in advance. So, not surprisingly, this bumper issue is all about summer. In the fashion pages we’ve got beach-ready trends, think super brights and gorgeous bags. Try our big quiz to discover which type of fashionista you are. And check out loads of lovely frocks for those long summer evenings. The big summer feature takes a look at vacations around the region and daycations around the island as well as super beach reads, bathers to suit every style and shape, the season’s latest sunnies and, of course, the allimportant sun screen – perhaps the most crucial part of any holiday! Elsewhere, Behnaz brings us up to date with the latest homes trends and news, and regular contributors Laetitia and Theresa, of liveandtaste.com, share a couple of gorgeous healthy recipes. If you’ve ever fancied a career in fashion, make sure to check out our interview with the crew at Bahrain Fashion Incubator. Founder Jalila Aarab talks about setting up this springboard for new designers and some of those involved tell us how the initiative is helping them towards their dream career. We also caught up with Shanee Puri of Nadeen School to hear about her almost lifelong involvement with the institution and her back-to-school tips for parents. Safe to say, it’s a packed edition, with our regular round-ups of news from the worlds of wellness and beauty too. So, I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Let us know how you’ll be spending the summer on our social media pages @ womanthismonth.

The classic pattern is a timeless choice for both dresses and tops. This season, the favourite colour combination is black and camel. The duo gives a contemporary approach to the traditional motif. Opt for a midi length to get multiple wears. It can be your choice for a day wedding, office workwear or even a summer night by the beach. Pair your dotted dress with a black and white handbag and black pumps for a vintage look.

You might have gone dairy-free, but the milkmaid dress is still a strong candidate to win your heart! The ethereal neckline is often accompanied by puff sleeves and soft floral prints. It can be found in long or short skirts. Grab extra wow with addons that highlight some of the colours in the pattern or choose a favourite hue to explore when the pattern is neutral. The ultra-feminine cut is beautifully paired with invisible sandals (the ones with really thin straps) and delicate accessories.

Maxi dresses are already a staple in many girls’ wardrobes and are still a favourite this summer. The shape is mostly flowy with prints that vary from paisley to bold florals. The obvious footwear to go with this look is chunky sandals, however, fashionistas all over the globe are opting for trendy trainers. Even high-end brands are complying and embracing the sportive element in their refined collections. Pick a classic handbag to play with contrasts.

Femininity is reigning this season and is best flaunted in dainty frocks. The white cotton dress is a staple in any summer wardrobe. It’s great for many situations and works as a blank canvas that can be worn for a sunset walk in the sand or transformed into a sophisticated outfit for a fancy beach party. Ruffles and lace give the final touch while a round wooden bag and gold accents balance the outfit for the perfect suave look.

The mishmash doesn’t necessarily have to be featured in one piece, you can create the look with tops and bottoms. For that extra touch, even your accessories can join the collage. The difference here from when you are pairing two different motifs, is that the colours don’t have to be coordinated. The pattern is the binding element and that’s enough!
Carolina Herrera and Versace created eye-catching jumpsuits and dresses that perfectly translate the trend. Paco Rabbane and Self Portrait brought the look to their catwalk shows. Blooming beauties arranged together to embrace a mismatched style is the thought behind their summer collections.

Hosts
IMTIAZ FOR HER HOSTS IGNITING THE BOARDROOM AHLAM JANAHI Multiple award-winning Founder of Bahrain Businesswomen’s Society and noted in Forbes magazine's 100 Most Powerful Women in MENA, 2014. You are president of Bahrain Businesswomen’s Society (BBS). What is your business background? I started out in foreign exchange and loans syndication at Arab Banking Corporation (ABC) from 1983 to 1989 and have been involved in business ever since as well as charity volunteer work for 36 years, since I was 13 years old! After ABC, I went to Al Ezz Trading and, in 2002, I set up my own company, Bahrain Horizon, and have been managing director, partner or owner at several ventures since then, including My Bakery, which I established in 2009 after studying the Bahrain market. To date it is one of the Kingdom’s leading bakeries. Most recently I launched Event Makers, an events management company working with international designers, earlier this year.
How did you become involved with BBS?
I was one of 16 founders, in 2000, and have always been a board member since then. I also took the role of president from 2012 to 2016 [two cycles]. I’m currently in my third term as president, which runs until next year.
What does your roll entail?
We aim to contribute to the Kingdom’s overall economy through our vision of global sustainability as well as innovation. We are recognised for the networking opportunities provided which work toward positive change in society. One of our goals was to empower members to reach decision-making positions on boards in both government and private companies. We have achieved that but we need to increase the number of these positions.
How does the society support and empower women towards development within commerce?
Throughout its history, BBS has collaborated with strategic partners to offer value-added events, conferences and seminars which are of relevance to women in the business community. By establishing and promoting best practices we are able to support members’ businesses and empower female entrepreneurs. The society is proud to encourage the career progression and success of all women in the business landscape
What does the future hold for BBS?
There are many exciting developments
ahead to look forward to. BBS is in the process of setting up training classes for members to sustain and grow their businesses. In October we will take part in the World Entrepreneurship Conference in collaboration with UNIDO and International Entrepreneurship Conferencein November 2019. There will also be the third edition of the B2B International Businesswomen’s Exhibition & Forum with workshops and events organized by BBS committees.
What would be your advice for entrepreneurs entering the market today?
My advice is that every entrepreneur has to confront obstacles and challenges in their journey. Undoubtedly, a single mistake can turn into a failure. But the true failure is the one that occurs when nothing was learnt or changed after the previous mistake. Learning from your own mistakes is of the utmost importance if you intend to become successful. Also, act today to feel motivated and inspired. If one approach is not working, then shift to another. Just don’t stop – keep trying.
FATEMA EBRAHIM Founder of Andra Public Relations You’ve recently launched you own agency. What made you decide to go it alone?
I felt like it was time. I had plans and aspirations in mind that I couldn’t achieve being in a limited structure. Action [her former employer] gave me a platform to start. After four years, I was ready after I gathered the knowledge,
26
July/August 2019
practice and set up my own creative mindset that I wanted to unleash.
What is your PR background?
I did my Masters in Public Relations & Corporate Communications at New York University. I got an internship on Wall street and worked on brands such as Coke Zero and illy Issimo which
taught me a lot. And at the same time, I was a community manager for an award-winning start-up. That blend was the perfect recipe. I had a mix of the corporate and startup world. In Bahrain, I became the country manager heading the Bahrain Branch. This was my first time handling clients solely on my own. My role www.womanthismonth.com
showcase involved strategising and spearheading communication programmes for clients as well as ensuring sustained, positive media visibility for them.
You are also a board member at both the Economic Development Board and WomeninFintechBh. Please tell us a bit about those roles.
My role is mainly to contribute (whether its directly or indirectly), give guidance and I have also created an access from certain start-ups to the board when needed. What I do is all interrelated. I was heavily involved in the FinTech space, and my role has also changed within the space. I used to run a payments start-up in 2015, and now I consult FinTech start-ups in
the region. This includes working on initiatives and supporting the Bahrain FinTech Bay, while creating opportunities for students and others to be involved in the FinTech landscape – through the Women in Fintech initiative.
How does being a woman in the boardroom dictate the way you behave and interact with your colleagues? Or, would you say, it is gender neutral?
I would say its gender neutral. It’s just a different environment which allows you to depend on your own leadership style and create your own tough skin to contribute. I don’t think there should be a fixation on what it’s like as a woman,
but more on how to have your own strong presence no matter who or where you are.
As a young and relatively new business owner, are you finding help from female mentors and role models and is this is a role you envisage for yourself in the future?
I like this question. It’s funny because sometimes you can be a mentor for someone, and that someone can be a mentor for someone else. Our experience is not the same and we speak and stand for different people. I always seek advice and mentorship, and I like to give it back.
SONYA JANAHI Founder of The Living Concepts and Maya La Chocolaterie. Please tell us about Living Concepts. Can you give examples of any recognisable companies you are working with?
The Living Concepts was established in 2004 as a hospitality consultancy 0000000000 company focused primarily on F&B concepts with the vision to create international franchise concepts starting from Bahrain. In 2007 it managed to successfully launch the first franchise model from Bahrain, Maya La Chocolaterie, of which I am the founder. The brand now has international recognition as it focuses on creating a chocolate culture of bringing chocolate fans to indulge in high-quality products and dishes. The Living Concepts has also managed to launch the first chocolate factory in Bahrain focusing on the artisan production of chocolate with no artificial additives added. Thus creating “chocolate for a better world”.
What inspired you to launch Maya? Is chocolate a particular passion or was it more about a gap in the market?
The concept was initiated on the basis of a diversification in investment and creating the first franchise model from Bahrain. It evolved based on both passion and covering a gap. But covering the gap in a unique way, not just following any other chocolate concept. The edge we have today is that the brand has created a chocolate lifestyle of having chocolate
for breakfast, lunch or dinner and this was the target.
You have a strong association with Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), what is your current role there?
I was elected to be a board member for the BCCI in March 2018. My role as a board member focused on restructuring the committees. Previously there were 24 committees focusing on different economic challenges. Today, we have managed to change the structure to have 10 sectoral As the voice of the private sector it is our obligation to support the sectors and ensure sustainability and progression. Apart from being a board member I am also the chairperson of the Steering Committee where the chairs of all the committees meet monthly to collaborate, discuss and outline challenges and success stories.
Last year you received the IWEC award, please explain what this is and the basis for your award. The International Women’s Entrepreneurial Challenge has been an initiative by the IWEC Foundation since its inception on 2007. The goal has been to support successful mid-size women-owned businesses in gaining and expanding access into international markets and in growing their visibility and brands.
They recognise successful women business owners on a global scale. Each year they choose successful women business owners from their network to honour them and present them awards at the annual conference. To submit for the award, you need to provide details about your company, your financial accomplishments and your vision to go forward. I proudly received the award, presented by UNIDO, in 2018 at IWEC Shanghai. Since then, I have recommended the BCCI board to establish a committee to ensure more Bahraini women are nominated for this prestigious award.
What would be your advice for women wanting to work in a diverse range of fields under one umbrella?
Make sure you have passion for what you want to do and that you are committed. You need to have a dynamic business plan to evaluate the model and research and read what is happening globally to ensure that you are on the right track. Don’t focus just on being a Bahrain brand, but focus on being a global brand and always benchmark your idea to global brands. Make it fun and enjoy the roller coaster ride.

PEOPLE | interview
LABEL LAUNCHPAD
Behnaz Sanjana sat down with some of the outstanding participants of the Dilmun Star programme from Bahrain Fashion Incubator (BFI) and its founder and CEO, Jalila Aarab, to chat about the budding designers’ imminent success.
Jalila Aarab
Jalila Aarab has been there, done that in the fashion sphere in Morocco, France and, for the last 20-plus years, in Bahrain. “I came to a point where I realised that someone has to start an incubator for budding designers here,” she says. “It is the only one of its kind in the MENA region.” Jalila’s springboard for new fashion designers helps them to realise their dreams of setting up their own businesses by providing the space, machines, technical labour, fabrics, tools, marketing and mentoring. She says: “We found that Bahrain’s new designers are not skilled enough to start their own business. Our pre-incubator programme, Dilmun Star, is a comprehensive, competitive platform, guiding them through the basic know-how in the creative and commercial aspect of fashion. We introduce them to the latest technology, like using the 3D printer we have on our premises. The students then create a capsule collection incorporating the themes of sustainability, technology and heritage, and pitch and present their work in the final phase of the competition to a panel of industry professionals. And the best are selected from the lot. “BFI is also the first to partner with L'Institut Français de la Mode, one of the biggest fashion institutes in the world, to facilitate an academic and entrepreneurial exchange programme between French and Bahraini designers. We are the bridge between academics in fashion to actually establishing a business in garment design.”

I was the only male participant amongst 20 ladies, and tied for second place in the competition. Although I have formally studied fashion, this course gave me immense personal and professional growth, and I feel lucky to have been part of this healthy competition with fellow team members. Learning Shingo Sato’s origami techniques on cloth was great. I also learnt about leadership, fashion marketing and business. Now I am familiar with fashion terminology – like mood boards, look books, gold samples and such, so I feel more confident to deal with large fashion merchandisers and big clients, to whom I will sell my unique designs. I never thought I could do that before the course.

Maryam Alalawi
I had a fantastic experience at BFI’s programme. I have not formally studied fashion, but have always been interested in it since a young age. I came in knowing nothing and gained all my knowledge here. While my strong point is in styling an outfit, I learnt about pattern-making, business plans and marketing at the programme. I applied this knowledge to my collection and stood third in the competition, thanks mainly to combining various fabric textures in one outfit. My entire collection was hand stitched, and with hand embroidered details. My unique use of the 3D printer was appreciated, as well as details like the metal-cast zipper tabs made by me for my garments. This programme has equipped me to market my own collections.
Khadija Alnajjar
My ideas and designs were much appreciated at the Dilmun Star programme. I am an artist and I love to transfer my art – stories, feelings and drawings onto clothes. I used technology in my dress which represented a traditional Arabic style air conditioner. I made a 3D tiara and the garment was laser cut. I came here with basic pattern making and sewing skills, but this programme has given me so much. I interacted with different personalities and exchanged ideas with them. We learnt about fabric, branding and running a business. In the near future I want to teach others what I know about fashion. Later, when I am ready, I will have my own brand, Inshaallah!
Lego Show 2019
The Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority held a LEGO Show at the Bahrain Exhibition Centre. Much loved LEGO brands such as, Ninjago, City, Duplo, Friends and Star Wars, to name a few, were present
Fatima Alsamahiji
I came second in the programme’s competition. It has been a great learning opportunity for me, professionally and personally. I have a diploma in dressmaking and designing women’s wear from Italy, but the cutting course by master cutter, Shingo Sato, was amazing and taught me advanced skills. My concept for my collection focused on weaving, which is a dying craft and I tried to integrate the basket weaving technique into my designs, which also incorporated a lot of handwork. For sure fashion needs to be technologically advanced and sustainable, which my collection also showcased. Now that the way forward is clear, I plan to start my own fashion brand.

PEOPLE | interview
As parents’ thoughts turn to the new school term, Shanee Puri, head of administration at Nadeen School, takes time out to chat to Behnaz Sanjana.
INCLUSIVE LEARNING S
hanee’s family moved to Bahrain in 1982, when Nadeen School had classes only up to Year Two. Her mother, Pauline, (pictured with Shanee) started teaching at the school the subsequent year and in another year had taken over from the original owner. “Growing up, the school was a big part of my life,” says Shanee. “I went on to study in the US, but chose to return to Bahrain and help out with the school.” After all these decades, Pauline still goes in every day, playing the role of guardian to its original essence. Observing and working with her mother has naturally led to the veteran’s ways rubbing off on Shanee. “I think the important lesson I learnt from her was to always do things with integrity, honesty and, in a school setting, with the children’s best interests at heart. I’ve never seen her falter in that aspect. She’s from an era where your word is your bond, and
Shanee’s top tips for the new term
that’s what I grew up with,” she reflects. When asked what sets the school apart from others in Bahrain, Shanee says: “Oh, many things! Nadeen School has always been a child-centred, emotionally-driven school with a strong focus on academic and pastoral development. The 400 students from over 50 countries remain front and centre of every decision we make. “We are the only non-selective of the six ‘outstanding’ schools in Bahrain. Our student body includes children of many different levels and abilities. We firmly believe that every child has the right to an education that is designed to meet their needs. Our motto ‘Small School – Big Family’ perfectly encapsulates our ethos and approach.” A unique learning environment is harboured to enable children to learn and play creatively
and purposefully in a range of settings from the ever-popular tree house or mudkitchen, to a creative play area, back garden, playground and climbing areas, role play spaces, play houses, and design technology area. “The school farm is where we grow vegetables and keep chickens and ducks and the occasional visiting goat!” she adds. Asked if young mindsets and attitudes have changed from when she started out 20 years ago, Shanee says: “Children still have the same needs as before: to feel safe and secure, loved and respected, and experience the world around them with wonder and delight. Societal expectations from them, as well as how they perceive the world, have changed. Less freedom (for many) to run outside and experience the rough and tumble of childhood has made us increase outdoor physical learning experiences, for example.”
1- Parents can reinforce a positive home-school bond and get involved in various school activities, thereby fostering greater learning progress. 2- Ensure children get enough good quality sleep – sometimes late holiday bed times can run over into the school term and the result is tired children. 3- Get kids into a routine in the weeks leading up to starting or returning to school.

FAMILY: Delight in Dubai - UAE
They mean it when they say there’s no place like Dubai, an emirate which has an obvious penchant for the superlative – tallest, biggest, and definitely, most family fun. With a range of accommodation available to suit every traveller’s preferences, Dubai is a holiday-maker’s dream. If you’ve already scaled the Burj Khalifa and whizzed down the slopes of Ski Dubai, get lost in the theme parks that make for cherished family times. While Legoland is a world of excitement for young ones with adventurous rides, rollercoasters and interactive play, Motiongate is a giant, magical park created jointly by Dreamworks Animation, Sony Columbia Pictures and Lionsgate. Themed on well-known Hollywood hits, visitors can revel in an entertaining experience full of extreme rides, movie tours and meeting your favourite silver screen characters. The sprawling IMG Worlds of Adventure offers muti-sensory escapades with much-loved superheroes from Marvel and Cartoon Network as well as life-size dinosaurs and a Haunted Hotel.
NIGHTLIFE: Party on in Beirut – Lebanon
This is the original party place – where celebrities like Marlon Brando and Brigitte Bardot swung by for real revelry in the swinging 60s. Today, the nights are still riotous, with bars and clubs having no official closing time, and club-crazy guests partying hard enough to catch the sunrise, even on weekdays. The Biel waterfront, also known as the New Corniche, is the spot where night clubs head to in summer, the nights go on and on, and venues are buzzing with the newest techno beats and the most happening crowds. Karantina is a spot where old warehouses are the nightlife haunt, like the well-known venues, Grand Factory and Discotek. Armenia Street on Mar Mikhael is another place to make merry like there’s no tomorrow. In this area, you’ll find Mothershucker, an oyster bar that’s usually high on the list of nocturnal pleasures of the city.

HISTORY: Fascinating Tales of Petra - Jordan
Open your eyes to a world steeped in antiquity and witness an ethos that has stood the test of time. The land where ancient civilisations once thrived, Jordan makes for an enchanting experience. Of course, Petra is most talked about. This ancient sandstone city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been popularly voted as one of the new seven wonders of the world. A walk through a stunning canyon eventually opens out to an imposing stone façade which is a fine specimen of skilled craftsmanship. It is the entrance to what is believed to be a treasury, but is the final resting place for Nabataean royalty. Walking on, the Royal Tombs of Petra look stunning bathed golden during sunset. Another intriguing attraction is the ruined city of Jerash where Romans once built columned pathways, temples and grand theatres in this former imperial centre.

CULTURE: Amazing Abu Dhabi UAE
The capital Emirate of the UAE is also its cultural heart. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, with its numerous marble domes, artistically created, bejewelled pillars and manicured lawns, is a place for quiet reflection. It’s one of the few religious places open to those outside the faith. The newest attraction is Louvre Abu Dhabi, which opened its gates in 2017. The art and civilisation museum is a first-of-its-kind cultural project that is a fruit of congenial relations between France and the UAE. Rooted in ‘universal human values’, it attempts to showcase the cultural achievement of mankind, from prehistoric times to today. Twelve museum galleries walk visitors through ancient artefacts and contemporary artworks, some on loan from world-renowned French museums.
NATURAL BEAUTY: Breathtaking Turkey Well yes, only the Asian portion of Turkey is deemed part of the Middle East, but we cannot ignore this country for its exquisite scenic beauty. A trip here affords views of gorgeous, diverse landscapes – from pristine beaches to thermal springs and mystical rock formations. Besides the Ottoman and Byzantine structures, the natural phenomena in the country are quite unlike anywhere else. Pamukale – meaning ‘Cotton Castle’ – is a calcite landscape, with pure white layered terraces that look frozen, but are brimming over with warm, mineral-infused water. You can soak yourself in the healing liquid while walking down the travertines. Cappadocia is known for its dwellings carved into hills and towering boulders. Climb up the rock castle of Uchisar for the best other-wordly views you might ever witness. Oludeniz is the town where one can enjoy the best of Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, and for those who seek to lose themselves among rocky peaks, the North Anatolian Mountains are your paradise.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) creams can be categorised based on their capacity to absorb the sun’s ultra-violet rays. Great colours, clever contours and graphic cut-outs prove the one-piece option doesn’t have to be boring. Whatever your size or shape, high-cut legs will almost always be more flattering than styles which sit lower at the top of the thighs, but make sure the fit is generous enough not to expose more than you’d like when you bend. Add emphasis to the waist with belted options, such as these styles from Lipsy and Marks & Spencer or channel your inner ‘80s beach goddess with leopard print and a deep V-front from Zara. Go for minimal tan lines with barely-there options from Accesorize, Bershka and Next but, be warned, these smaller style bottoms look best with a flat tum and when going for a minimal style, fit really is everything – if in doubt, go up a size. The retro style from Mango goes in the opposite direction and is perfect for disguising a tummy, as is this superbly cut striped number from Mango Violeta, which will accentuate curves and offer support. PRETTY REVENGE
THE FRIEND
Sigrid Nunes’ novel examines the magical bond between a woman and her dog in a heart-wrenching story of friendship, bereavement, love and healing. A woman’s close friend has taken his life, leaving her and Apollo, his Great Dane, in bottomless grief. She hesitantly agrees to give shelter to the bereft canine, who makes living in a small apartment that much more difficult. As dog and woman mourn the death of the dear one, they form a bond in this finely nuanced prose. Besides being about the bond that can be forged between man and animal (the narrator even convinces her landlord to allow her to keep the dog), it is about writers and writing. Nunez’s work, in this particular installation, is clever, mature, readable and worth re-reading.

This emotionallycharged thriller is hot off the press, having been released just this July. In Emily Liebert’s fictional work, revenge is what's important, no matter the cost. Well-heeled New Yorker Jordana Pierson has it all: wealth, glamour, arm candy of a husband, and a successful business. Her record is spotless and her dark past has been hidden away. But not from Kerrie O’Malley, an unemployed woman in a listless relationship. When Kerrie sees Jordanna, the woman who wronged her years before, a fire for revenge burns bright. She knows the stakes are high, but she will stop at nothing to destroy her. This one is an absolute page-turner, filled to the brim with plot twists and lots of suspense.
Whether you’re poolside, on the beach or just whiling away the warmer months in blissful AC, take the chance to catch up with some great page-turners; we’ve got new releases and a selection from the last decade, all absolutely not to be missed.

THE GUARDED GATE
New York Times bestselling author, Daniel Okrent, has recently given bookworms this intriguing 1920s’ read featuring eugenics, racial prejudice and senseless laws to keep America free from the ‘lesser races’. Scientists who argued that certain nationalities were inherently inferior provided the intellectual justification for the harshest immigration law in American history. Upper-class Bostonians and New Yorkers, who led the antiimmigration movement, used the eugenic arguments to successfully keep hundreds of thousands of Jews, Italians and other unwanted groups, including East Europeans, out of the US for more than 40 years. This insightful tale connects the American eugenicists to the rise of Nazism, and shows how their beliefs found fertile soil in the minds of citizens and leaders both in their country and abroad. www.womanthismonth.com

A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW
Amor Towles wrote a story full of old-world charm wherein readers can lose themselves to the now absent art of aristocracy, set in a period shortly after the Russian Revolution. Count Alexander Rostov refuses to endorse the spirit of the times and is imprisoned in Moscow’s Hotel Metropole. His extravagant lifestyle must be toned down to one of confinement in a tiny room with the bare essentials. As the years pass, the Count remains a perfect gentleman, never acknowledging his situation as ‘confinement’, let alone complaining about it. The novel is set in a cramped room of a single building, yet the author makes it entertainingly spacious, reminding readers that moral discipline is never outdated.
A MAN CALLED OVE
THE HEART GOES LAST
Margaret Atwood, famous for her brilliant story-telling in The HandmaId’s Tale, showed her literary prowess with this one. She puts the human heart to the test in this account of Stan and Charmaine, a couple struggling in the face of a socio-economic collapse. Unemployed and homeless, they live in their car, often having to protect themselves from street gangs. The going is tough until they come across the Positron Project, which would make life so much easier, or so they thought. Get ready for a gripping read in this sinisterly funny and unsettling tale about a not-so-distant future, where the legit are in lock-up, but the crooked roam free.
ES I D L O N GOLDE
This 2012 book from columnist and writer, Fredrick Backman, is all about slightly maverick Ove living in Sweden after the death of his beloved Sonja. He is a grumpy old man who represents the slowly fading generation of a by-gone era where one’s physical abilities and knowledge were what made a man. Readers say it ‘touched the soul’, made them laugh till they cried, and rendered them speechless, in spite of taking time initially to get used to the writing style. The plot is engaging, with humour, grief, love and wit thrown in in equal measure. This book became a phenomenon, with its far-fromcharming central character being the much-discussed topic at reading groups, talk shows, office-coolertalk and parties. www.womanthismonth.com
ELEANOR OLIPHANT IS COMPLETELY FINE
This was one of those novels that captured hearts and minds; one that became a favourite with book clubs around the world. The story is centred around isolation, as many know it, in the modern world, where the protagonist, Eleanor, has built a small, exclusive world around herself, doing nothing outside of going to work, returning home and spending her weekends bingeing on store-bought pizza. Her journey from awkward oddball to something different speaks to readers. Author Gail Honeyman has landed a couple of awards for her debut into novel writing, which has been translated into 30 languages thus far. The film rights to the story have been bought by none other than Reese Witherspoon – need we say more? July/August 2019

A Natural Influence
As much as we love soaking in the sun and getting tanned at the beach, we can’t deny the fact that summer can dehydrate our skin and can cause breakouts, rashes, burns and other skin problems — but that doesn’t mean that we can’t enjoy surfing the waves, lounging by the pool or even playing beach ball on the shore. “One misconception about beauty and skin care is that we need to spend thousands of dollars just to look after ourselves. We don’t. And sometimes, the best beauty solutions are right in front of us – literally,” says Lady Baltazar, a regional beauty influencer. Here, she shares eight natural remedies to look and stay flawless without breaking the bank:
CUCUMBER EYE MASK
BANANA + HONEY + LEMON FACE MASK
Procedure: Peel a banana and mash it. Combine it with honey and lemon juice then apply to face for about 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Benefit: Extraordinary summer glow. Bananas are filled with vitamins and minerals which help nourish, smoothen and brighten the skin. Mix with honey to help absorb and retain moisture making your skin hydrated; and lemon juice for an extra brightening and lightening property. A must-have to achieve glowing skin this summer.
Procedure: Cut in slices, refrigerate for 15 minutes and apply over your eyes for about 10-20 minutes. Benefit: Reduced eye puffiness and dark circles. Cucumber has a natural cooling effect. It helps reduce swelling and rejuvenate dull skin while helping you relax and hydrate the area around your eyes. Now, you don’t have to wear those oversized sunnies to hide those dark circles.
TOMATO + CUCUMBER TONER
Procedure: Mix cucumber juice and tomato pulp. Apply as a toner using cotton balls. Leave for 10 minutes then wash with warm water. Benefit: Small and tightened pores. Aside from treating large and open pores, tomatoes help prevent signs of ageing and act as a natural sunscreen. Now you can enjoy your time under the sun without worrying about your skin. Win-win!
COCONUT + LIME BODY SCRUB
Procedure: Mix coconut oil, shredded coconut, plain white sugar and lime juice. Use as a body scrub and rinse and shower after. Benefit: Smooth and moisturised skin. Coconut juice on the beach? Yes! Coconut body scrub? Big yes! Being a natural and gentle exfoliator, coconut helps remove dead cells and prevents flakiness giving moisturised and hydrated skin. It leaves your skin smelling great too.

July/August 2019
HONEY + SUGAR LIP SCRUB
Procedure: Mix sugar and honey into a paste. Apply on the lips using a toothbrush and gently scrub for two to three minutes. Rinse with warm water. Benefit: Soft and hydrated lips. Honey can draw moisture into dry and chapped lips helping achieve exfoliated, soft and hydrated lips for summer. Use a lip balm after and off you go to the beach! www.womanthismonth.com
BEAUTY |
CORNSTARCH + ALCOHOL DRY SHAMPOO
Procedure: Mix cornstarch, rubbing alcohol and water. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and spray into roots. (You could add lavender to improve the smell.) Benefit: Instant hair revival. Cornstarch is a natural degreaser. When used as a dry shampoo mixed with alcohol, it can refresh the roots and combat odour while leaving the hair looking and smelling fresh. It’s very convenient, especially for those days at the beach.
Puppet Show Puppet theatre specialist Ramadan Yousif presented a series of educational and entertaining puppet shows inspired by local heritage, animal stories, great adventures, folk tales and traditional games. The show was held at Sheikh Salman Bin Ahmed Al Fateh Fort, Riffa
OLIVE OIL HAIR TREATMENT
Procedure: Massage olive oil into hair. Wrap hair with a shower cap or towel and leave it for about an hour. Rinse then shampoo. Benefit: Soft and shiny hair. Let’s face it – as much as we love summer, the sun can dry out not just our skin but our hair too, making it brittle and frizzy. Olive oil can help repair this damage leaving us with healthy hair that’s soft and shiny.
OATMEAL + SALT + LEMON FOOT SCRUB
Procedure: Mix oatmeal, salt, lemon, baking soda and water into a paste. Gently scrub into rough or dry areas then rinse with cool water. Benefit: Smoother and softer feet. Our feet take a beating every single day so it’s only right that we give them some love and attention. Oatmeal is a great exfoliator and has anti-oxidant properties that can help treat dry skin while soothing and softening the skin on your feet. It will make you feel relaxed and ready for another day of summer adventure. www.womanthismonth.com

World Traveller
Perhaps better known for its frangrances and to-die-for smelly candles, French brand Diptyque Paris is gearing up for the summer vacation with the launch of a skin care travel collection called The Art of Care. Coming in a gorgeous atlas-inspired bag, the line is said to be inspired by ancestral rights and raw materials and is designed to treat and hydrate skin exposed to UVA/UVB rays. The collection consists of a body polish, a shower gel, a body lotion and a hand balm, all of which, no doubt, smell divine.
A Sniff of Dua Lipa
Described as pop music’s bold new voice, since her eponymous debut album in 2017, London-born Dua Lipa has been breaking records, becoming the most streamed female artist in the world. She’s been nominated for multiple industry awards, was hailed as a Next Generation Leader by Time magazine and has tens of millions of Instagram followers. Now she’s adding another string to her bow as the new YSL Beauté Fragrance Ambassador, a role which will begin in September with a campaign for a new feminine fragrance.

If, like us, you love the gym gear from Canadian brand Lululemon, you’ll be excited to hear that they’re planning to “make sweaty amends” for all that exercise induced glowing with the launch of a range of après workout products. Dubbed Lululemon Selfcare, the collection includes a face moisturiser, a dry shampoo to tame those sweaty locks, a lip balm and, loving this, an “anti-stink” deodorant. They’re gender neutral and “tested on athletes, not animals”.
A Democratic Launch
The long-awaited launch of Lady Gaga’s beauty brand, Haus Laboratories, is making history as the first major beauty brand to be sold exclusively on Amazon. In an interview, Gaga told The Business of Fashion (BoF) that she chose to launch with the online retailer because she feels Amazon gives her the ability to do whatever she wants with her own company. With orders being taken from mid-July, Gaga teased the September launch in a video featuring herself and a group of male and female models all bedecked in brightly coloured and sparkly make-up. GET GOOD
s t u G
Probiotics and prebiotics. Behnaz Sanjana finds out the difference and why they are key to good health.
PROBIOTICS Simply put, probiotics are bacteria that inhabit the digestive tract. Before you wrinkle-up your nose, not all bacteria are bad. Probiotics are essentially the ‘good guys’, helping to protect your body from harmful pathogens and fungi, sending signals to your immune system to take necessary action, regulating inflammation and providing important nutrition to the cells lining your digestive tract. What we eat determines the outcome of the constant battle between the good and bad bacteria in the gut. Sugars and fats feed the bad bugs, allowing them to grow exponentially, without enough good bacteria to control them. Pesticide-laden foods and antibiotics also have a negative impact on the bacteria balance. You can help your gastrointestinal system by eating fermented foods rich in live strains of advantageous bacteria – yogurt, cheeses like Gouda, mozzarella, cheddar and cottage cheese, traditional
buttermilk (the leftover liquid from making butter), pickles, kombucha, kimchi, tempeh, miso and sauerkraut. If none of these stir your appetite, you can supplement. with capsules or liquids containing live beneficial bacteria, but not all of them will do what they claim. They may not all have the same types of bacteria in the proper concentrations, could be heat sensitive and may not even survive your stomach acid. According to doctors at Harvard Medical School, due to the brain-gut connection, probiotics may indirectly enhance your brain and boost mood and cognitive function.
Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria are the two main species of probiotics, each having their individual strains.
PREBIOTICS While probiotics are beneficial for gut flora, prebiotics are the food that feed the probiotics. They are found in certain indigestible, fibrous carbohydrates (no, not pizza and pasta). By selectively nourishing
and populating only the good bacteria, they improve metabolic health and help prevent certain diseases, as well as aiding digestion and enhancing the production of valuable vitamins for the body. They enable probiotics

to reach the lower gut after competing with more than 1,000 various bacterial species. So as to not alter their fibre content, they are best eaten raw when possible. Prebiotic supplements contain fermentable fibre and, as they are not bacteria, are highly stable and are unaffected by heat and acidity. Of course, they vary in targeting the type of probiotics they feed.

Genetically Modified Seafood
America’s FDA has approved an Indiana company’s genetically-altered salmon. It may be available at restaurants next year, but diners may be unaware. The fish are 99.99986 per-cent Atlantic salmon with a dash of gene promoter from ocean pout and a growth
hormone gene from Chinook salmon. The new salmon, engineered to grow at a much faster rate, requires 25 per cent less feed and is produced inland to protect native fish populations and marine ecosystems. www.healthline.com
A team at the University of Washington has created a method that allows three people to work together to solve a problem using only their minds. In the game BrainNet, three people play using a brain-to-brain interface. The game has a block at the top of the screen and a line that needs to be completed at the bottom. To complete the game, the two senders pass information from their brain, through the internet to the brain of the receiver. The receiver processes that information and completes the game. The team hopes that these results pave the way for future brain-to-brain interfaces that allow people to collaborate to solve tough problems. www.sciencedaily.com
Un-Healthy Eating
Prostate Risk Reduced
The risk of prostate cancer could be reduced by consumption of tomatoes. According to a study published in the medical journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, men who consume more than 10 portions of tomatoes each week reduce their risk of developing prostate cancer by about 20 per cent. The Bristol team analysed the diets and lifestyles of around 20,000 men aged between 50 and 69. www.express.co.uk www.womanthismonth.com
Calorie counting app creators have been criticised for allowing the platforms to be misused by people with eating disorders. An investigation found more than 20 harmful entries generated by users of MyFitnessPal, Lose It! or Lifesum, including some promoting dangerous cycles of starving and binging. Eating disorder charity Beat said the mobile apps could exacerbate unhealthy behaviours and make recovery harder. One user developed anorexia while using the MyFitnessPal app to track her food intake. By the end of her first semester at university she was also addicted to exercise, had become seriously ill and was hospitalised. www.bbc.com
Cellulite Away
There may be a way to treat cellulite without taking drastic measures or spending a ton of money on creams, according to a new study which looked specifically at the effects of fascia manipulation, a type of manual massage treatment typically employed for pain relief. According to the findings, fascia manipulation techniques proved to be successful in decreasing the subcutaneous adipose tissue and reducing the appearance of cellulite over a 12-week period. However, its positive effects are limited to the time it is being used. www.huffpost.com July/August 2019

SUMMER FLAVOURS
Live and Taste or, rather, Laetitia and Theresa, food bloggers and authors of liveandtaste.com are back with some great, refreshing summer recipes.
The duo, who are “addicted to trendy accessories, home décor, travel and a certain lifestyle – happy living and living well” became friends after their respective pregnancies. "To improve ourselves, we discovered an exciting new way of eating and cooking through a well-balanced diet: mainly plant-based recipes, whole and unprocessed food, raw food, superfood, refined-sugar-free, gluten-free (as
far as possible) and a limited amount of dairy. We found a new way of living!" Since then, they’ve been sharing their experience and it was natural to start their blog liveandtaste.com “that reflects what we are and what we love!” In the latest of their quarterly series, Laetitia and Theresa share two recipes created exclusively for Woman This Month.

WHY DO YOU WORK? Financial expert Pria Masson Tanwar gives us a monthly dose of economic wisdom.
A
while ago, I met a friend who was very enthusiastically planning her next vacation. This seems to be what she is doing almost every time I meet her. She works full time and yet, most of her conversations are around where she travelled last and where she will go next. Travelling is what drives her or, to quote her, “I work to travel”. The concept can sound surreal. To have a specific reason why one earns, other than “to pay bills” is a dream for so many. It got me thinking that it need not be. So often I have discussed the need to budget and to plan finances for the purpose of creating a “nest egg” for specific uses. The tricky part is that, with money, it is usually “the more the better” or “spend now think later” that drives any given individual at the very core. It’s almost never an actual focused approach. That, to my mind, makes all the difference in the way one experiences money. If you have the spend-now-think-later mindset, the budget and nest egg for any given activity will be easily pushed north. That’s because the ability, or rather the desire, to really compromise is not strong enough. The need to spend or invest in current
52

expenses overrides. This means that often, bills are paid at the last minute, credit is taken and money can be a stress. If you have the more-the-better mindset, life is not much easier. Likely, you may have an actual surplus of funds and the option for flexibility, but the knowledge that any expenditure depletes from your nest egg is a stressor and reduces the joy of that expense. Its unlikely you delay bill payments or that you really take on any reckless debt. However, no money you have seems enough to give joy and, again, money can be a stress.
meet a few other criteria to be effective. One, it must be focused on each individual’s experience requirements; two, it must be small in proportion to the overall nest egg; and finally, it has to be set solely by the individual who will use it. This could be small amounts – BD20 saved each month is enough to give you BD240 at the end of the year, which could mean a ticket home. Or it could mean BD20 invested or saved each month, which gives you a larger nest egg to begin the next year with.
So, are we all doomed to be in this loop? Perhaps, but, like most aspects of life, there are coping mechanisms that can be used to deal with it. Budgeting is obviously not a clear answer because of the above issues. Add this to a family mix where one family member may have one mindset and another a different one, and it’s easy to see why finances are such a source of discord.
So, if you like to save, you can grow your individual nest egg and experience the joy of its growth. That leaves the family holiday and experience budget to be enjoyed better knowing one bit is intact. If you like to spend, you can spend the nest egg on things that give you joy in addition to the family nest egg for experiences. Either way, those vacations or experiences will be richer by BD240 one way or the other.
To me, the answer lies in creating a compulsory, goal-focused and very specific “experience nest egg” for each member of a family. Yes, it is budgeting, but it needs to

A HUG A DAY,

KEEPS THE WHINING AWAY! W
hining is universally considered one of the most irritating sounds in the world. This is not an accident! Research shows that whining is the perfect sound for eliciting a fast response from parents. It is almost impossible to ignore. Our children have developed to make a sound like this because their needs at that moment really are urgent. We’re not supposed to be ignoring them! Whining is often a preschooler’s most efficient means of communication. It is an important milestone on the way to being able to communicate their needs entirely by speech. When we bring home our newborn baby, we understand that crying is their only means to communicate with us. Toddlers and preschoolers are well on their way adding speech to their list of tools, but have not yet developed enough to use these tools in moments of feeling powerless or unheard. This is when we will hear them whine. Yes, it is not fun. And yes, it is not easy. But no one can deny that ALL toddlers (and even older children sometimes) do it, and excel at it. If we can hold on to that same understanding we had when they were babies – that they are communicating to the very best of their abilities – we will be far better equipped to take a measured approach when moving forwards to meet their needs.
www.womanthismonth.com
Ouiam Charkani El Hassani says
For this reason, we are best not to follow the often-spouted advice of “tell them to use a big voice” or “let them know you can’t understand them”. Trust in your children that they are already speaking as well as they can, in that moment, and that asking them to do better will only increase their feelings of powerlessness or being unheard. In the child’s world, his parents are his rescuers and his protectors, so if, when he is feeling vulnerable and weak, his parents add to his misery instead of helping him, it might create trust issues later in the child’s life. Instead we can tell our children what we do understand from their message. We understand that they are having a hard time and need our help. Whining isn’t really about the ball or the cookie or wrong coloured plate. It is a representation of a deeper need. Meet their whining with empathy and try to evaluate the need that lies buried underneath their requests for help. Is your child hungry, tired, bored or overstimulated? Is something bothering him from school that day? Is he coming down with flu? So many other factors can play a big role in making the much-dreaded whining appear.
big hug or to sit with him making him feel safe and loved, before we rush back to all the things we need to do and finish. A common myth is that whining can be used as a means of manipulation or that our children can be “fake whining”. There really is no such thing as fake communication. A request for attention is a genuine need and offering our children that attention in difficult times lets them know that they will always have our support and helps build on healthy attachment. If we are starting to feel like our children are whining all day long that is a perfect sign that we need to put aside some extra time for one-on-one connection, and for making sure we have reached their emotional needs. While perfection is not the goal here – we all know that – we can however always try our best, every single day. Chanelmama
If it’s not any of these, it’s likely they are needing nothing more than your full attention and the time taken to connect. While it is physically impossible to leave every other duty we have as mums, and stay glued to our kids all the time; we can take five minutes to simply give the child a really
