EDITOR’S NOTE

It’s been an exceptionally busy month for the Woman This Month team. Did you perhaps spot one of our vibrant team members out and about?

Despite my busy schedule, being someone who has a deep interest in social causes, I often ask myself: “Am I doing enough to support my community? Am I making an impact on… anyone?”. It’s something that has come up in conversation repeatedly with my coworker and our Production Manager, Mimi, a person I consider to be a dear friend and largely credit for my heightened sense of logic and motivation over the last year. Being the gracious woman that she is, she has a knack for reassuring me and seems to believe I do enough. Perhaps she sees me with kinder eyes than I sometimes view myself with – the type of friend we all need sometimes.

This brings me to my point of meeting women who uplift each other and have an impact on their communities. This month, WTM had the privilege of being the media partner for UNIDO’s World Entrepreneurs Investment Forum (WEIF). Over the course of the three-day forum, we met several inspirational women and interviewed the exceptional Fatou Haidara, Sophia Swire, Dr. Alaa Hamadto and Samrawit Mersiehazen. They have persevered to have long-lasting impacts on communities across the world and shared stories that moved me and several others. Perhaps it’s the inspiration I need to pursue large-scale positive change, or maybe it will be you, dear readers, who will have the next great story to share.

As part of this edition, we interviewed the Philippines Ambassador to Bahrain, HE Anne Jalando-On Louis, who shared her insight into bilateral relations between the two countries and Bahrain’s ASEAN Committee. We also share the stories of Adventurer and Motivational Speaker, Madhu Sarda, Professional Photographer, Nina Mommsen, and International Behaviour Analyst, Stella Philip.

Selfcare is an essential part of all our lives, one that is often overlooked! This month, we compiled a very special feature which highlights the best of beauty, aesthetic and wellness services across Bahrain. As part of this feature, you’ll read about the power couple behind ALKEM, Nasra Alabrawi and Aaron Grimley, who are featured on our cover. Together, they have introduced innovative IV Therapy treatments in Bahrain to address a range of concerns. I also reviewed the Turkish Hammam experience at Talise Spa located at Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain which proved to be an incredibly rejuvenating treatment.

Being a jam-packed edition, you’ll also find insightful articles covering parenting, Bahrain’s business sector and cognitive sector.

Last, but certainly not least, it is in this edition that are proud to unveil the categories for the 2024 Woman of the Year Awards, the awards ceremony for which will take place on December 2. We also introduce you to our esteemed panel of judges – the Awards Review Committee (ARC).

There’s plenty to explore in this edition, and even more to discover online. So be sure to visit our website womanthismonth.com, and follow us on Instagram using the handle @womanthismonth.

LEADING A VIBRANT COMMUNITY

In an exclusive interview with Woman This Month, HE Anne Jalando-on Louis, Ambassador of the Philippines to Bahrain, shares insights into her extensive diplomatic career, the robust bilateral relations between the Philippines and Bahrain, and the vibrant Filipino community’s role in the Bahraini economy. She discusses the goals and initiatives of the ASEAN Committee in Manama, Bahrain (ACMB), which she will soon chair, and on the occasion of the Philippines’ 126th Independence Day, highlights the cultural and economic collaborations that continue to strengthen ties between the two nations.

Your Excellency, can you give our readers an overview of your diplomatic career to date?

I joined the Philippine Foreign Service back in 1996 after I passed the Philippine Foreign Service Officers’ Examination the year before. After joining the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Philippines, I went through a year-long cadetship programme. Subsequently, I was assigned to several offices at the Department in Manila such as the Office of ASEAN Affairs, the Office of European Affairs and the Office of the Secretary. My first posting was to the Philippine Embassy in Kuala

Lumpur, Malaysia. Following that, I served as the Philippine Consul General in Sydney, Australia. Before I arrived in Bahrain in April 2022, I was on my second tour at our Embassy in Malaysia, serving as Deputy Chief of Mission and Consul General

You recently took over as the head of the ACMB. Can you let us know what this responsibility entails and what your primary objectives will be?

ACMB was established in 2017, joining 54 ASEAN Committees in other countries where there are ASEAN diplomatic missions. Here in

Bahrain, the ACMB comprises the five ASEAN Diplomatic Missions of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. I will be taking over as the chair of ACMB from my Indonesian colleague, HE Ardi Hermawan. The primary aim of ACMB is to promote awareness and deeper understanding about ASEAN, paving the way for closer engagement between the ASEAN member countries and Bahrain, whether politically, economically or in other areas. For instance, I note that ASEAN as a bloc represents a significant opportunity for trade and investment.

What can you tell us about the state of

Womanthismonth.com 12 June 2024 PEOPLE | interview

bilateral relations between the Republic of the Philippines and the Kingdom of Bahrain?

The Republic of the Philippines and the Kingdom of Bahrain celebrated the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations last November, so this year marks our 46th year. Our ties, however, extend beyond these formal relations to long-standing people-to-people connections. Over the years, we have signed more than 20 bilateral agreements, with several more pending or being negotiated. Notable exchanges include the visit of former President Rodrigo Duterte to Bahrain in August 2017. We are eagerly anticipating the opening of the Bahraini Embassy in Manila this year following the directive issued by HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. We believe our bilateral ties will only continue to strengthen in the coming years. How many Filipino nationals currently reside in Bahrain, and what are the key sectors they are involved in?

According to the latest figure from the Labour Market Regulatory Authority, there are more than 57,000 Filipinos in Bahrain. They work across various fields including engineering, healthcare, accounting, education, architecture, graphic arts, retail, hospitality and household services. There are also entrepreneurs among them. Our nationals are contributing significantly to Bahrain’s economy in numerous sectors.

How do you view the role of Filipino expatriates in Bahrain’s society and economy, and what measures are in place to support their welfare and integration?

Filipino expatriates are highly regarded for their strong work ethic, commitment and skills. They contribute significantly to the growth and development of Bahrain and help build community, not only within the Filipino community, but also with other expatriate groups and within Bahraini society. The Embassy works tirelessly to support their welfare and integration, offering services and

programmes that help protect their rights and promote their well-being.

What are the main areas of cooperation and collaboration between the two countries? Could you highlight any recent developments or initiatives aimed at enhancing trade and investment?

Trade and investment are key areas of cooperation. Last year, we organised a business-to-business matching session with several Philippine food companies. We aim to diversify this engagement to include non-food items such as office equipment and supplies, furniture, garments and personal care products. We want to promote the Philippines as a choice destination for business as well as for tourism. Additionally, the Filipino Business Council, formed last year, is an instrumental partner in fostering deeper business engagements between Filipino and Bahraini enterprises.

Your embassy is an avid supporter of the Filipino Creatives Bahrain. What efforts are being made to support such groups in Bahrain, and how does the embassy promote cultural exchanges and people-to-people connections between the two nations?

We are immensely proud of the artistic talent within the Filipino community in Bahrain. The Embassy has organised several exhibitions showcasing their work, such as the Salam Salamat art exhibition held in December 2023, which featured 22 Filipino and 23 Bahraini artists. We also promote Filipino culture through the Embassy’s Sentro Rizal, named after our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, which displays artworks by the members of Filipino Creatives Bahrain. These initiatives help strengthen cultural ties and foster mutual understanding between our nations. What opportunities do you see for further strengthening the diplomatic, economic and cultural ties between the Philippines and Bahrain in the coming years?

We look forward to formalising several agreements, including one on labour cooperation. We are working towards

convening bilateral meetings that would pave the way for the implementation of a number of joint activities and programmes across various sectors. There are many areas of cooperation that both our countries can continue to explore and I believe that these present opportunities for us to forge even closer ties in the future. The Philippines’ Independence Day will take place on June 12. What events will be taking place in Bahrain to celebrate this auspicious occasion?

In celebration of the 126th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence, we have a series of activities planned throughout June. Highlights include performances by the Filipiniana Rondalla, a Filipino cultural group of seven musicians who will perform during our National Day reception as well as at a concert to be held at the Cultural Hall. We are also organising a week-long art exhibition. We will also showcase Filipino cuisine and products and host contests and activities for the Filipino community such as essay writing, poster making and painting.

On the occasion of the Philippines’ Independence Day, what message would you like to convey to the Filipino community in Bahrain and to Bahraini nationals regarding the future of bilateral relations?

We are grateful to HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and to the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain for providing an enabling environment to Filipino nationals. We are confident that our bilateral relations will grow even closer and stronger in the years ahead. We look forward to 45 and more years of productive and fruitful cooperation, serving our mutual interests and aspirations. To my fellow Filipinos, I wish you a meaningful and joyful observance of Philippine Independence Day. Let us remember the legacy of our forefathers who fought for our freedom and continue to contribute positively to the task of Philippine nationbuilding.

FOSTERING WIDESPREAD PROGRESS

At the recent World Entrepreneurs Investment Forum (WEIF), organised by UNIDO, the Woman This Month team met with Fatou Haidara, the Deputy to the Director General, Managing Director of the Directorate of Global Partnerships and External Relations and Director General’s Special Representative for Africa. In this insightful conversation with Farah Baig, the inspirational Ms. Haidara imparts insight into UNIDO’s global partnerships, key initiatives and opportunities across Africa, and sound advice for Woman This Month’s readers.

Womanthismonth.com 14 June 2024 PEOPLE | interview

Thank you very much for taking the time to speak to us today. What are some of the key initiatives that UNIDO is currently undertaking to foster global partnerships and enhance external relations?

Women empowerment is an important topic, but in general, the way we look at industrial development at UNIDO is a process. It’s a holistic approach which involves different partnerships with policymakers, the private sector, research and development, and the civil society.

UNIDO’s way of working is to support national priorities. Many countries, if not all, have national plans and we support them within the mandate of UNIDO, which is industrialisation. However, industrialisation today is green which translates to talking about factors such as climate change, renewable energy and sustainability. In fact, our mandate at UNIDO, is inclusive and sustainable industrial development. While doing so, it’s important to see which are the best partnerships to tackle global challenges. While some are broader than others, at the end of the day our work is based on partnerships.

Now, when it comes to external relations, it’s more or less the same – the UN system. We believe strongly that one organisation alone cannot tackle the challenges; so, we build partnerships with other UN organisations. Furthermore, we strongly believe that today’s challenges cannot only be public but rather public-private partnerships.

Another key element is the focus on youth and on women because these are areas where one should really be investing.

How does UNIDO engage with African nations to promote industrial development and economic growth?

When it comes to Africa, we have a very close relationship with the African Union Commission and support the Agenda 2063 which is the African leaders vision for the continent. We also work with the regional economic commissions and communities on their regional initiatives. Then at the national level, we support each of our member countries in implementing national priorities. At each of these levels, we try to build as many partnerships as possible to tackle the challenges that they are facing.

Could you share some successful examples of partnerships between UNIDO and African countries that have yielded positive outcomes?

We have the Program for Country Partnership (PCP) which was implemented

in a few African countries. At the country level, different ministries may work on their specific responsibilities with their partners. However, this programme brings all the partners to the same table and under the leadership of the country through the Prime Minister or President’s office. Ultimately, the idea is to have all the ministries involved in economic development together.

We have a very good example in Ethiopia which mobilised resources. We supported industrial parks and job creation for young people and women. UNIDO not only played a catalytical role, but helped to mobilise resources for the country’s priorities. In Senegal as well, we support the development of policies for industrial parks which also mobilises private sector investment and job creation.

This is a model that is working quite well and we try to emulate it as much as possible with other partners.

In your role as Director General’s Special Representative for Africa, what are the main challenges you encounter in driving industrialisation efforts across the continent?

You know there are some challenges that are seen across all continents, but when it comes to Africa one challenge is that the level of industrialisation is low. The value addition is not at our expectation as Africans. We have a lot of resources, but most of the time they are exported as raw materials while we could transform them locally. This is part of the Africa vision – more economic diversification, more transformation and also intra-Africa trade, because when we talk about trading, we think of exporting outside Africa while we have a lot of opportunities to trade within the continent. This is a part of the agenda that we are supporting.

The challenge for me, which is something I mentioned during the WEIF panel, is the young population in Africa which is an asset. It’s a challenge if it’s not taken care properly in terms of education, skills development, entrepreneurship development and having a conducive environment for young people to invest in startups and have access to financial resources and markets. So, there is a range of services that we need to collectively provide in Africa to help them to foster growth. With technological advancements I think that could also be used to have more competitive enterprises and startups. This is how I see it: there are challenges but there are many more opportunities.

As Deputy to the Director General, what strategies do you employ to ensure effective coordination and collaboration within UNIDO and with external stakeholders?

With external stakeholders we have one principle which is cooperation, but good cooperation is based on a clear understanding of the objectives of what we want to achieve together. When this is clear, we then define our roles and bring the maximum number of partners around the table. For instance, at UN organisations we have our specific mandate but all work together for industrialisation. If our objective is clear, we partner to see how we support the country which is how I operate with external partners.

The key factor is defined objectives. This is how we build and maintain strong partnerships with our external stakeholders.

Coming to the WEIF, how essential are events of this stature to achieve these goals?

That’s a very interesting question. Economic development in several countries is mainly based on SMEs and this forum is a way to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs. Youth, women, private sector, partnerships and capacity building are some of the words we kept hearing throughout the event. The topics that are discussed are also very relevant.

I participated in the third edition and see how it has grown since then with over 60 countries being represented from across Asia, Africa and Europe in addition to Arab countries. As UNIDO, we also have a success story with the Kingdom of Bahrain which is an AD program – an entrepreneurship development and investment promotion that we can showcase because throughout the years we have created an ecosystem to support SMEs.

The WEIF also serves as an important platform for young entrepreneurs to network. It creates a platform for all involved to be in the same place including the policy makers, universities, young entrepreneurs, women, financial institutions and the UN.

As a woman in an essential leadership role, what are your thoughts on the scope for women to drive change? What would be your advice to women pursuing similar positions and wishing to have an impact on their society and wider regions?

I would say never give up. It’s not easy, but we should not wait for others to give us; we should take it. And we have the capacities to do so. With a magazine like yours, I see it as an encouragement for women to say it’s possible - that’s important. This is why I say never give up… because it’s possible. It might take time, and it takes effort, but what can we gain easily?

A FORCE OF TRANSFORMATIVE SOCIAL CHANGE

Sophia Swire, the visionary founder of Gender Equity Diversity Investments (GEDI), recently attended the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) forum in Bahrain. Swire’s career, spanning from banking to ground-breaking social initiatives, reflects her unwavering commitment to gender equity and education. In this exclusive interview with Farah Baig, she offers enlightening insight into her motivations, challenges and aspirations, offering a compelling narrative of her life’s work dedicated to uplifting women in conflict-affected regions.

Ms. Swire, you had a very successful career in banking initially. What drove you to leave your career and pursue social change?

After the stock market crash of 1987, which was the biggest since 1929, the atmosphere in the finance sector became extremely cutthroat. My boss at the time, who was meant to be protecting and mentoring me, even threatened to take my top clients to save his job, which felt deeply unjust. During this challenging period, I felt a compelling urge to find work that had more meaning and impact, beyond the bottom line of making money. This was the era of ‘greed is good,’ but I longed for a life that contributed positively to society. So, I listened to the virtual bird on my shoulder and decided to become an aid worker or a war correspondent, leading me to the Hindu Kush and ultimately to establishing 200 schools across Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.

Why did you choose education as your primary focus?

When I first went out to the region in September 1988 on my reconnaissance trip to Peshawar, I ended up going trekking in the Hindu Kush with some friends of mine to this absolutely beautiful former principality called Chitral. It was landlocked by snow for eight months of the year, impossible to get in or out except by air. The weather meant that people were sometimes isolated for weeks at a time so inevitably it was considered a backwater, both culturally and economically. It couldn’t attract the top teachers, engineers, lawyers and so forth, and there was just two percent female literacy.

Womanthismonth.com 16 June 2024
PEOPLE | interview

I arrived on my 25th birthday and the local Deputy Commissioner tapped me on the shoulder and asked for my help to set up a school, which felt like fate. With the help of my friends and resources from London, we established a school that became a beacon of change. Witnessing the transformative power of education, especially for girls, reinforced my belief that education is the silver bullet for economic and social development. Over the years, we’ve seen literacy rates improve significantly, to a high of 30 percent now, which in turn reduced infant and maternal mortality rates due to better access to female healthcare professionals.

Following the co-founding of Learning for Life, you also founded Future Brilliance, which offered workplace skills for Afghan women. Can you tell us more about that initiative?

Between my educational projects, I started a successful pashmina business, working with female artisans in Nepal during the Maoist uprising. This venture allowed women to work from home, improving their economic conditions and enabling them to send their children to school. This experience taught me the value of empowering women through enterprise. Turquoise Mountain asked me to establish a jewellery school in 2008 to train Afghan women in jewellery making and other skills. Future Brilliance was started in 2012 with the support of the US Department of Defense’s Task Force for Business and Stability Operations. We provided highlevel training in Jaipur and placed these women in top workshops, significantly improving their economic prospects and community stability. They took those skills back to Afghanistan and they brought them to their villages, transforming the aspirations, hopes and economic outlook for remote rural villages.

Given the recent changes in Afghanistan, how have these initiatives adapted, and what are your hopes for them moving forward?

Despite the challenges, many artisans we trained remain in Afghanistan and continue their work. Interestingly, the Taliban government has formalised artisanal mining and reduced tax rates to two percent down from the 15 percent of the previous government, making it a more viable business. Although education for girls has faced setbacks, the Taliban has recognised the need for female healthcare workers. We are developing an AI-powered learning solution to bridge the educational gap for girls, especially in nursing and midwifery. This hybrid solution aims to provide top-tier education despite the current restrictions.

You’ve also been passionate about

supporting female entrepreneurs globally. Can you share more about your work with GEDI?

GEDI focuses on harnessing private sector investment to support ambitious womenled businesses. Globally, only two percent of venture capital funding goes to female founders, which is unacceptable. In the MENA region, the figure is even lower at a measly 0.47 percent. GEDI aims to change this by providing funding and support to women with game-changing ideas, particularly in STEM fields. Women have ideas for gamechanging technologies that are good for the climate, good for people, good for nature, that are regenerative, sustainable and circular because women tend to be more planetminded and people-minded. Our goal is to not only support these women for social good but also to ensure solid returns on investment, demonstrating that investing in women is both ethical and profitable.

Do you have a message for women wishing to drive the level of social change you have pursued?

Absolutely. First, build your confidence. Public speaking can be daunting, but it’s essential. Join groups like Toastmasters or your school’s debating society to overcome shyness. Second, collaborate and test your business ideas with professionals. Join

venture studios or accelerators, ideally with women founders who understand your perspective. Third, tailor your presentations to the data-driven preferences of investors, who are often men. Lastly, build a strong network. Everything I’ve achieved was with the support of a dedicated team. Raise an army of likeminded individuals who can support and amplify your mission.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

We can do nothing alone. So everything I’ve ever done, things often quite astonishing under the circumstances, for instance, evacuating hundreds of Afghan people, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars virtually overnight, helping to charter a jet, moving people through checkpoints, setting up and running safe houses in Pakistan, none of these things I’d ever done before. And I was able to do it because it wasn’t just me, it was a team.

I led a team, I raised an army. So my advice is raise an army for whatever it is you’re trying to do. You know, we’re Jedi at GEDI, we’re light warriors and we’re an army of light bearing warriors for good! So my invitation to your readers is join our GEDI network. It will be an opportunity, if you have proficiency, to provide that expertise to female founders whom we eventually invest in and wish to scale.

REVOLUTIONISING THE FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY

On the sidelines of the 5th World Entrepreneur Investment Forum (WEIF) organised by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), Woman This Month met with the inspiring Sudanese Entrepreneur, Dr Alaa Salih Hamadto. She gave us an insight into her efforts to empower farmers and harness the power of clean energy.

Ata time when sustainable energy and food security are top priorities globally, Dr Alaa Hamadto, a Sudanese entrepreneur, is making waves in the food processing industry with her innovative company, Solar Foods. The entrepreneur was a contributing panelist at the WEIF and shared her experiences in a session focused on “Women, Peace, and Security: Empowering Female Entrepreneurs for Stability in Conflict Zones,” alongside other remarkable entrepreneurs. During the session, Dr. Hamadto highlighted the situation in Sudan, emphasising that the conflict is not a civil war but rather a war over natural resources.

Her journey not only encompasses building a successful business but also empowering women and promoting clean energy with an ambition to globalise the concept and enable developing economies to thrive.

“My passion for clean energy began when my father, a senior scientist at the UK Atomic Energy Authority, returned to Sudan in the 1980s with a vision to promote solar energy as a more efficient source of power,” states Dr. Hamadto. “So, I left my career in dentistry and founded Solar Foods in 2017; a cleantech startup that utilises solar energy to dry food products including vegetables, fruits, meat, and more.”

Her company’s mission mainly revolves around enhancing food security and preventing harvest waste in Sudan, by providing affordable and eco-friendly drying methods to farmers. “Through our innovative approach, we help farmers preserve their produce and create new opportunities for them. We buy products directly from them at fair market rates, dry them using solar energy, and then package and sell them locally and internationally,” she states.

With a presence in over seven countries, including the UAE, the UK, Oman, and Qatar, Solar Foods has become a multi-awardwinning company. However, her journey has not been without challenges. The outbreak of armed conflict in Sudan in April last year forced her to shut down her factory and move her operations to Egypt. Despite this setback, she remained committed to her vision and launched a new project in cooperation with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to provide a drying and storage facility in a safe area of Sudan.

“Sudan has been suffering from conflicts over its resources for years. It was nominated to be the world’s food basket and we are trying to shed light on the resources that we have and help with feeding the world again. We want it to become a global hub for dried food products,” she comments.

Through Solar Foods, she intends to create a sustainable model that can be replicated

in other developing countries, particularly in Africa. “I believe that by harnessing the power of clean energy, African countries can overcome their energy challenges and achieve economic growth,” she says.

“Furthermore, through my charity organisation, Moves, we aim to support humanitarian causes and work to empower women. In fact, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we successfully raised funds to establish the second-largest isolation centre in Sudan, among other noteworthy initiatives. In addition, we managed to evacuate women and children from conflict zones to safer areas within Sudan and neighbouring countries,” she says.

Dr. Hamadto’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and empowering women is a beacon of hope for a brighter future. Her story is a testament to women’s potential to create an impact on their community and the world at large.

SHEER DETERMINATION THE STORY OF SAMRA

At the recent UNIDO forum held in Bahrain, Ethiopian luxury designer Samrawit Mersiehazen, founder of the Samra brand, shared her inspiring journey and insights into the fashion industry with Farah Baig. We reveal the remarkable path which took her from creating makeshift bags out of plastic and fabric to leading a globallyrecognised luxury brand, whilst empowering women along the way.

Ms. Mersiehazen, affectionately known as Samra, began her journey in fashion at a young age. “I’ve been doing this business for almost 12 and a half years,” she shares. “My first inspiration was making old plastic bags with fabric for my brother when I was nine or 10.” This early foray into design, though born out of necessity rather than passion, planted the seeds for her future endeavours. Despite numerous challenges, including being a single mother and navigating the complexities of the fashion industry, Samra’s determination never wavered. “I had to be tough and had a choice to quit or just be strong. Everything is tough so I said I have to be tougher,” she explains. Her resilience paid off, as her brand made its international debut at the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Berlin, followed by showcases in Paris, New York and Tokyo.

The company is world-renowned for its array of men’s and women’s leather shirts, jackets, coats, handbags, wallets, laptop bags, shoes and other apparel. A selection of her coveted range of bags can now also be found in Bahrain at Market Street located in Umm Al Hassam.

One of the defining features of Samra’s brand is its deep connection to Ethiopian culture and resources, particularly the country’s exceptional leather. “In Ethiopia, we have the best leather,” she notes. “Its nature is different because the fibre is criss-cross, which makes it very beautiful and dense and at the same time

very soft.” This unique quality, combined with Samra’s commitment to international standards of craftsmanship, has allowed her to carve out a niche in the competitive luxury market. Beyond creating luxurious products, Samra is deeply committed to empowering women. “Out of our 100 employees, 95 are women,” she says. “This dedication stems from my own experiences and struggles as a woman and single mother of two. Ultimately, my goal is not just to provide jobs but to foster an environment where women can thrive and gain financial independence.”

Her efforts extend beyond employment. Samra’s initiatives include providing legal support for women facing domestic violence and training programmes that allow women to work from home, ensuring they have a sustainable income.

Samra’s vision for the future is expansive. She aims to increase the brand’s international presence, particularly in regions where it currently lacks representation, such as the Gulf area. The UNIDO World Entrepreneurs Investment Forum in Bahrain provided a valuable platform for her to network and share her story. “The networking is the best thing that you can do. Sharing our beliefs, sharing our thoughts… I took lots of lessons from this conference,” she reflects. Her participation not only highlighted her achievements but also underscored the importance of forums that facilitate cultural exchange and economic collaboration. Samra’s inspirational journey from a young girl with a dream to a celebrated international designer is a testament to her resilience, creativity and commitment to empowering others. She wants her story to provide motivation to young women and girls in Ethiopia and around the globe, particularly those who aspire to make their mark in the world. “‘If Samra can do it, then I have a chance too,’ is what I hope others will think,” she concludes.

In this very special feature, we explore the finest of wellness and cosmetic services in the Kingdom of Bahrain. This list has been carefully curated to only feature establishments that are trusted, that focus on results, and genuinely care for the women that walk through their doors and the results they will ultimately achieve. In the pages that follow, discover pioneering IV therapy treatments, luxurious salon and spa services, patient-centric dentistry, enhancing cosmetic procedures and more.

Every woman is beautiful in her very own way, but there’s no denying that selfcare is essential for us to feel incredible inside and out.

If we were to explore the history behind the concept of beauty, it is quite interesting to note that beauty products and remedies can be traced back to ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and India. So well before the existence of pioneering services and glitzy cosmetic brands, women across the world were enhancing their features with innovative concoctions. For instance, charcoal mixed with butter was used as kohl, crushed safflowers used to stain cheeks and lips, and henna was used to stain hands and the luscious locks of women.

Where wellness was concerned, herbs and teas were the way to go for a lot of communities. While the health and wellness industry has come a long way offering myriad services and procedures, some of these herbs and teas are now backed by science and incorporated into daily routines to this day. Fast forward to more recent years, and we can explore another aspect of beauty – the icons who inspire. Who can forget Marilyn Monroe’s platinum blonde hair, Brooke Shield’s statement eyebrows, Twiggy’s iconic lashes and Elizabeth Taylor’s unique violet eyes. Today, women that are shaping the inspiring trends include Huda Kattan the pioneering woman behind Huda Beauty, singer turned entrepreneur Rihanna who is behind the brand Fenty Beauty, Bella and Gigi Hadid for their strikingly beautiful features, among several others.

These days, it is clear that beauty enhancements go beyond hair and makeup with the widespread availability and advancements in the aesthetic industry; this is especially the case with celebrities that we look to for inspiration! Airbrushing and other digital enhancements also play a role in pictures that we see splashed across social media and other platforms. So, remember to recognise your beauty, inside and out, and discover what works best for you.

In this very special feature, we explore the finest of wellness and cosmetic services in the Kingdom of Bahrain. This list has been carefully curated to only feature establishments that are trusted, that focus on results, and genuinely care for the women that walk through their doors and the results they will ultimately achieve. Read on to discover pioneering IV therapy treatments, luxurious salon and spa services, patient-centric dentistry, enhancing cosmetic procedures and more.

The NHRA-licensed medical centre, located within City Centre Bahrain, provides accessible, comprehensive healthcare solutions tailored to today’s busy professionals. PEOPLE | interview
Womanthismonth.com 22 June 2024
Creative Director: Esky Dubois Photographer: Nina Mommsen Jewellery: Al Majarah Jewellers Dress: Mara Fashion Boutique

Can you share a bit about your personal backgrounds and what made you want to pursue something in the wellness industry?

Aaron: I have an athletic background, having been involved in competitive sports well into my 30s and 40s. Over the last 15 years, I’ve had nine surgeries due to sports injuries and age-related issues. Looking back, I realise that what we offer at Alkem could have warded off the symptoms or even prevented some of these issues. It’s very personal for me, having experienced the physical and mental challenges of injuries. I believe our treatments can help others avoid the same path.

Nasra: As a mum of three, I’ve given birth to three kids in four years. Like many mums, I often neglected my health, which led to mood swings, anger and other health issues. I sought easy solutions without addressing the root causes. After taking hormone health and gut health courses, I realised there was a significant gap in the GCC for such treatments. As an Omani native, I felt compelled to fill this gap and help others, especially women, understand and manage their health better.

How long has Alkem been operating, and what has been your journey so far?

Alkem was conceived around mid-2022. We spent the latter part of the year brainstorming, strategising and negotiating. By March 2023, we were breaking ground on the infrastructure, and within six months, we managed to stay within our budget constraints in terms of time and finances. We had a soft opening in September last year and fully opened by January 2024. Balancing time and money have been crucial, especially with young kids and a busy lifestyle, but it’s been a rewarding journey!

What inspired you to start Alkem, and why did you choose Bahrain as the place to establish it?

Nasra: In the region, there’s a gap in both traditional and modern medicine. People deserve to understand the root cause of their health issues. For example, someone with acne might only receive topical treatments when the root cause could be related to gut health. We aim to educate and treat people holistically, addressing issues from the inside-out for sustainable, longterm solutions. This approach isn’t just for acne but also for post-cancer detoxing, gut health issues like H. pylori and hormonal imbalances. We wanted to bridge modern and traditional medicine to provide patients with comprehensive care.

Aaron: I’d add that our approach is very personalised. We dive deep into symptoms and root causes to tailor holistic solutions that address the overall wellbeing of our patients. As for Bahrain, it was a strategic choice. The country offers a dynamic economy, a supportive business environment and a regional push for health and wellness initiatives. These factors align perfectly with our goals.

What is Alkem’s core philosophy, and what differentiates it from other medical centres?

Our philosophy is about improving the quality of life while unlocking potential longevity. We aim to get people on a healthcare journey that enhances their physical and mental wellbeing and sustains it over a long period. We focus on providing knowledge and personalised care, ensuring our patients understand and can maintain their health holistically. It’s not just a short-term treatment but a continuous process of learning and improvement.

Can you provide examples of some unique and innovative services that Alkem offers?

We offer a combination of modern and complementary alternative medicine, such as IV therapies and regenerative medicine at a cellular or DNA level. We also provide personalised nutrition plans based on comprehensive blood work, tailored to individual needs rather than generic multivitamins. Our advanced profile looks at minerals, elements, heavy metals and hormones to determine the exact needs of our patients. This personalised approach ensures that each patient receives exactly what their body requires.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced while setting up Alkem, and how did you overcome them?

Startup challenges are tough, involving long hours, balancing family and navigating regulatory approvals. Introducing many firsts to Bahrain, like the first naturopathic doctor and the first medical centre in a shopping mall, required extensive groundwork and approval processes. We spent over a year getting through this, but our persistence paid off. As for our location in City Centre Bahrain, it was a combination of strategic planning and fortunate timing. Early conversations with the team led to a proposal that fit our needs perfectly, and after rigorous negotiations and meeting strict guidelines, we secured our prime location.

Can you describe a typical customer journey at Alkem and how you ensure a personalised experience?

At Alkem, we believe in seeing and hearing each patient properly. Each patient spends at least 30 minutes to an hour with us, diving deep into their health history. Our integrated approach means that once a primary doctor charts a treatment plan, all practitioners are informed and ready to act immediately. We use an in-house app for continuous support, where patients can chat with doctors, receive educational content, meal plans and more. This ensures accountability and continuous care, even between appointments.

How does Alkem stay on top of the latest trends in the medical industry and ahead of the curve?

Staying ahead means looking several steps forward. We’re closely involved with regenerative medicine and constantly collaborate with the NHRA to ensure safety and compliance. The regulations in Bahrain are stringent but achievable. We faced challenges getting approvals for innovative treatments, but thorough preparation and strategic partnerships helped us navigate these hurdles. Our continuous focus on new treatments and maintaining high standards keeps us at the forefront of the wellness industry.

What are your future plans for Alkem in the market environment and the wider region?

We aim to be a recognised brand in the GCC and globally. The Middle East is rapidly growing in health care and wellness awareness and therefore we plan to expand, leveraging the shift in mentality towards holistic, integrated healthcare. Our goal is to offer solutions that bridge the gap between symptom-based treatments and proactive, personalised care, ultimately improving the quality of life for our patients and extending their healthy years.

Trendy, distinct, exquisite – these are just some of the words that come to mind when visiting Spa Social. The sensational new beauty and wellness destination in the Kingdom of Bahrain has a distinct identity one that has been inspired by international experiences and bespoke standards.

“The motivation behind the establishment of Spa Social stemmed from a clear observation of a gap in the market. Despite the abundance of salons and spas in Bahrain, I noticed a lack of salons that could match international standards or brand recognition. This realisation inspired me to bring the experiences and inspirations we encounter while traveling, into the local market,” explains Ms. Abdulrahim.

Spa Social offers people new and unique experiences, allowing them to fully indulge in self-care and well-being while enjoying a truly pampering day. “By providing a space where individuals can invest in their own relaxation and enjoyment, Spa Social aims to elevate the salon and spa experience in Bahrain to an international level,” she says.

Since our establishment, we have fostered a strong sense of connection, becoming more than just colleagues we are a family,” she says happily.

When selecting new team members, Spa Social prioritises individuals who possess not only experience and motivation but also a genuine passion for their craft. “We believe it is essential for our team to align with the brand’s values and understand the unique needs of our business. Joining our team is more than just coming to work and leaving; it is about engaging in meaningful interactions, learning from one another, teaching and sharing knowledge, socialising and forming genuine connections,” she says.

“We believe that by creating a positive and enjoyable work environment, we can provide our clients with an exceptional experience that goes beyond the services we offer,” she adds.

Women visiting Spa Social would be pleased to know that the salon and spa has added a women’s gym, Crush Fitness, making it a one stop destination for wellness services.

“Our vision for Crush Fitness is to create a private members club that offers unique classes to enhance your gym routine. Apart from our super trendy classes, we are proud to be the first in Bahrain to introduce the Megaformer workout, which is part of the Lagree Fitness method. At our Lagree Studio, we have four Megaformers that offer a 45-minute workout designed to make you shake, sweat and burn calories. This high-intensity, low-impact workout is sought by many celebrities and provides an excellent fitness experience,” she explains.

As Spa Social continues to recreate the industry, the future is bright for the revolutionary wellness destination. As part of her short-term goals, Ms. Abdulrahim intends to refine the brand and enhancing the services, features, and experiences it offers.

Meet Nouf Abdulrahim

As a serial entrepreneur, Nouf Abdulrahim is the driving force behind several businesses across the island. Her ability to think outside the box and come up with innovative solutions has culminated repeatedly through businesses that stand out from the general fabric of Bahrain’s industries. She had successfully founded AquaArt and Aqualux, two companies that specialise in building materials. Additionally, she has undertaken the task of reimagining Marmara as a brand within the same industry.

Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, she then embarked on a highly successful venture Contempo Uniforms which focuses on providing seamless uniforms for domestic, hospitality and medical industries, creating stylish and functional uniforms that make a lasting impression.

“I can identify unique opportunities and develop creative strategies to stand out in the market while possessing strong leadership skils. As a female entrepreneur, I understand that setbacks are inevitable. However, my ability to bounce back and learn from these experiences has grown to be one of my key strengths,” she says. Today, she is the driving force behind Spa Social and Crush Fitness in an ever-competitive beauty and wellness industry. “These new ventures reflect my dedication to exploring diverse business opportunities and meeting the evolving needs of the market. By diversifying into the wellness sector, I aim to provide unique, highquality experiences and contribute to the well-being of individuals,” she says.

“We believe that there is always room for improvement and strive to continuously elevate our offerings to new heights. Looking ahead, our long-term goals include expanding the reach of Spa Social beyond our current location in Bahrain. We envision the establishment of additional Spa Social locations both within Bahrain and internationally. We are excited about the possibility of bringing our unique concept and exceptional spa experiences to a global audience because, after all, why limit ourselves?” Scan to watch the video

HOLISTIC WELLNESS AT ITS BEST

Farah Baig reviews the indulgent Turkish Hammam at the oh-so-relaxing Talise Spa located at Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain.

It’s been an exceptionally busy year, so far, at Woman This Month; so, to say that I was in need of some rest and relaxation is quite the understatement. Talise Spa, located at Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain, has been a subject of my curiosity since the luxury resort first opened its doors. The opportunity to indulge in its rejuvenating Turkish Hammam experience presented itself, and here I am – a brand new me –telling you why it now tops my list of spa experiences in Bahrain.

We were greeted by our host (also named Farah!) who explained that the treatment would take 60 minutes and gave us a tour of the women’s spa. With a state-of the-art women’s gym, indoor pool, relaxation lounge, treatment rooms, Turkish hammam and supporting facilities, this spa is nothing short of phenomenal.

After changing into comfortable robes, we were led to the Turkish Hammam and were awestruck by its pristinely beautiful interiors. A large marble ‘belly stone’ took centre stage while a surrounding seating area proved to be a blissful area where guests could relax. Talise Spa uses homemade products; in fact, some of the pastries at Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain are made with the same ingredients used in the spa treatments. A palette of scrubs, balms and oils carefully-curated using the finest of ingredients including white musk, coffee, pomegranate, lavender and thyme, was already laid out for us.

As with traditional Turkish hammam experiences, we started with the steam room where our attendants applied a balm to our skin and gently massaged premium coconut oil through our hair. We were then left for five to seven minutes in the hot steam room where our pores could open up, an essential element that helps you detox. I appreciated the fact

that we were checked on periodically to ensure we were comfortable. Interestingly enough, Talise Spa combines a Moroccan treatment in the steam room followed by Turkish treatment in the main room. We were then shown to the belly stone where we were soon to indulge in new levels of relaxation. After pouring jars of water on us we were encouraged to lay back. Generous palmfuls of scrubs were applied to our skin and then meticulously scrubbed using an exfoliating glove, a sensation that was quite soothing. Once again, paying careful attention to guests’ comfort, we were asked for our preferred pressure. Next, our attendant thoroughly washed, conditioned and brushed my hair, which personally is a luxury considering that mine goes down to my waist. We were then in for a unique surprise – a bubble massage! I was covered in a blanket of bubbles and given a gentle massage that was supremely calming.

After being rinsed off, we were told we could rest at the hammam at leisure before proceeding to the lounge. Back in our robes, we sat back at the idyllic lounge and listened to soothing tunes while we sipped on detox water and a warm delicious concoction featuring fragrant lemon grass. Healthy snacks including nuts, premium dates and delicious dark chocolate were also served. Quite a memorable way to spend a Tuesday afternoon!

With baby soft skin and an unshakeable feeling of restfulness, I drove home feeling mentally and physically recharged. I’d like to sincerely thank the Talise Spa team for their exceptional hospitality –which Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain has perfected – and an unforgettable spa date. I’m already planning my next visit … probably for a dip in the stunning indoor pool this time.

Vitality Wellness & Spa is proving to be a haven for women seeking quality salon and spa services. Farah Baig speaks to the women propelling the concept: Managing Director, Usha Jagdish, and Customer Service Manager, Khushi Asher.

“ THE ART OF REJUVENATION

My vision of having my own spa and wellness centre was fulfilled in April 2022 when we first opened Vitality Wellness & Spa,” says Mrs. Jagdish, who has led a renowned wellness brand in Bahrain for 15 years.

A tour reveals beautiful facilities for Moroccan baths and wellness treatments amongst a sprawling salon offering the most sought-after beauty services including nail extensions, hair extensions, eyelash extensions and lamination, and hair treatments.

“Our aim is to contribute to your overall wellbeing. So, we have created a comfort zone where every woman feels more relaxed and rejuvenated when leaving than when she first walks through our doors,” she says.

Vitality specialises in therapeutic services include Swedish, candle, lymphatic drainage, deep tissue and Ayurvedic massages aside from hot stone treatments and cupping which are ideal for people dealing with pain. “We recently introduced slimming procedures which focus on specific areas to target cellulite and facilitate fat loss. These have been growing in popularity and are an ideal option for women looking for relaxing treatments that support their aesthetic goals,” she explains.

Result-driven facial treatments in Bahrain are not easy to come by, but Vitality’s facials are designed to target concerns such as aging, dehydration, pigmentation or acne. “A unique selling point for us is that we use organic products from a brand called Purple Swan. These products were formulated by my sister, a skincare formulator from the award-winning Formula Botanica in the UK,” she states. “These products are also incorporated into facials, truly relaxing head massages and more.”

Khushi Asher adds that Vitality uses a bespoke approach when recommending services and prides itself in its level of transparency. “We

believe in ethical sales, so we assess every client’s needs and recommend what’s best for them. For instance, if one was to request a service which may jeopardise the integrity of their hair, we explain why it is not feasible at the time. Building trust is essential to us,” she says.

She has also been highly instrumental in keeping Vitality on trend. “This can be seen with our extensive range of nail services. We offer innovative, industry leading services including gel builders, extensions and more that not only look incredible, but maintain your nail,” she explains. “Our nail technicians can also create eye-catching nail art, chrome nails and more.”

Furthermore, Vitality prioritises staff training and extensive sanitation of all beauty tools and treatment areas. “For our salon to be safe and hygienic is of paramount importance to us. All our staff are extensively trained for every salon service and spa treatment to ensure that every woman visiting Vitality has the very best experience,” concludes Mrs. Jagdish.

Experience true rejuvenation and know that you are in safe hands at Vitality Wellness & Spa.

Woman This Month A Reconnection with

It’s been an exciting quarter following the relaunch of Woman This Month as a standalone publication. WTM Brand Ambassador and Associate Editor, Esky Dubois, reflects on her storied connection with the magazine, our recent media partnership with UNIDO and a milestone achievement of now being an award-winning author.

Afew months back, friends who wanted to receive event exposure within the illustrious pages of Woman This Month magazine reached out to me. I was both surprised and happy that people still associated me with the magazine, even though I had left the publishing company, Red House Marketing, ten years ago.

Following my initial association, it was natural for Woman This Month to hold a very special place in my heart. My journey with Woman This Month began when my mentor, George Middleton, approached me to be a cover model. Little did I know that this would lead to a five-year working relationship that ended in 2013.

We remained friends and the opportunity to work together arose again. This time, I returned as Woman This Month’s Brand Ambassador and Associate Editor. Just days after rejoining the team, I received that message from my friend, proving it felt like I’d never left!

For those who read the first post-pandemic relaunch edition in March 2024, you

might recognise me from the article my colleagues put together. Since then, I’ve enjoyed reconnecting with former clients and colleagues and getting to know the amazing Woman This Month team.

This May, Woman This Month was honoured and received an accolade from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) for being a media partner of the World Entrepreneurs Investment Forum (WEIF) which was held in the Kingdom of Bahrain and proved to be a resounding success.

As you know by now, Woman This Month now releases a special edition every quarter to not only feature remarkable women but share updates on our upcoming Woman of the Year Awards event. This award ceremony, which celebrates exceptional women residing in Bahrain, will be held on December 2 following Bahraini Women’s Day which is marked annually on December 1. And while I look forward to the upcoming awards, I must also look back and mention the thrilling month that we have had as I was working with the talented photographer Nina Mommsen for the cover shoot of the June edition. It was an absolute pleasure styling the power couple behind Alkem with clothes from Mara Fashion Boutique and exquisite pieces from Al Majarah Jewellers.

Last but not least, I would like to share that my third book titled Nafkot (which translates to ‘Longing’) has won Kiber Award’s ‘Best of Short Stories’ category during the awards ceremony which was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. As a writer, it is truly exciting for Nafkot which features several inspiring women as lead characters to have received this recognition.

On that note, I would also like to take this opportunity to share that my second book titled Yeferenji (which translates to ‘White Man’s Wife’) that was originally written in my native language Amharic will be available in English soon. As an Ethiopian woman married to a Frenchman, who have two beautiful children, I felt the need to write this book which talks about interracial marriage and explores misconceptions around it from both sides. I hope that sharing the narrative in English too, will enable it to reach and resonate with even more readers.

I look forward to the upcoming September Edition of WTM as I’m positive there will be several exciting developments to share then too. Until then, stay well!

SO ICONIC!

Al Majarah Jewellers has been a doyen of Bahrain’s gold industry for decades. Farah Baig speaks to the powerful women behind the brand’s current vision and iconic designs, Krupa Sagar and Trishna Sagar.

Avisit

to Al Majarah Jewellers is a dazzling experience given the sheer range of Bahraini gold and premium gemstones that have been crafted into iconic pieces.

The gold industry in Bahrain holds significance due to the Kingdom’s historical ties to gold trading and jewellery craftsmanship. “For Al Majarah Jewellers to have been a part of the entire growth process from scratch leading up to the milestones where Bahrain serves as a regional hub for gold trading, attracting buyers and sellers from neighbouring countries is a great privilege,” says Krupa. Now, this legacy is being taken forward by Krupa and Trishna who are nothing short of gold standard jewellers. “Coming from generational goldsmith families, the art of design and craftsmanship is rooted in tradition for us. So naturally, when the time came, we decided to actively participate in innovation and modernisation within the commercial aspect of the business,” she adds.

The two women have completely different skill sets, which enables them to create a synergy that amplifies their individual talents and strengths. “It helps us explore new possibilities that neither could achieve alone. The mutual support and encouragement help us push our boundaries, enabling continuous learning and growth, one holding creative and the other technical expertise. We bring ideas to life with a balance of innovation and practicality,” says Trishna.

When it comes to design and manufacturing gold jewellery, Al Majarah Jewellers has been a trendsetter with designs such as the entirely handmade handkerchief motif of the 90s, which required special skills to manufacture. “Now, you can find an amalgamation of timeless and universally admired, bespoke jewellery pieces, as well as read- to-wear smart, practical and design-oriented pieces,” she says.

The duo has cast a wide net when it comes to design inspiration with each drawing from personal experiences and artistic influences. “Nature, architecture, history, art and even everyday objects can spark creative ideas. You will also find a lot of our designs stemming from emotions, memories and personal stories,” says Krupa warmly. “For us it’s about keeping an open mind and letting our imagination run wild.”

Popular designs include the signature THEKRIYAT necklace which is available in three variations featuring yellow gold, white gold, diamonds or your choice of gemstones with Bahraini pearls. “One of our other loved pieces, the flip wheel necklace portrays the subtle contrast and duality present in life. All elements and pieces belonging to this necklace set, including the earrings and ring, can be worn on both sides: traditional and contemporary. It’s exceptionally unique!” she says.

Al Majarah Jewellers recently launched its flagship store in the heart of Manama at the exact location where it all started in 1975. “What sets us apart from others in the area is our focus on offering a highly personalised experience, crafting unique pieces tailored to individual taste and preferences. It provides our clients with an opportunity to collaborate closely with skilled artisans bringing their vision to life. This approach has enabled us to form deep connections with clients while creating pieces that resonate on a deeply personal level,” they share.

“Our ultimate vision for Al Majarah would be to become a global brand and continue to craft pieces that can be forever cherished. We hope that our legacy of design and manufacturing will be passed on for generations to come.”

BUILDING AN IVORY TOWER FOR CREATIVITY

Nassreen Alhamadah, the founder of Ideahub W.L.L., brings a unique blend of passion and vision to her role. She explains to Kristian Harrison how her journey into entrepreneurship was inspired by a need for dynamic, flexible learning spaces in Bahrain, catering to both children and adults.

Originally from Saudi Arabia and now residing in Bahrain, Nassreen’s diverse background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Air Transportation Management as an instructor and ongoing studies in NEBOSH Occupational Health and Safety. Nassreen’s early career was quite different from her current path. “On my way to being a pilot, I flew a plane when I was 17 years old,” she recalls. “Then life happened, including having my beautiful daughter Nashly, known as Amirah, who is now 14 and my biggest supporter, and I realigned myself in the oil and gas sector before eventually finding my calling in the fun and learning space. Ironically, after 10 years, I’m now working back through an airline company and managing Ideahub!”

Self-described as driven, God-fearing, smiley and friendly, Nassreen Alhamadah is dedicated to creating a nurturing space where creativity and learning thrive. The inspiration for Ideahub arose from a clear need for more engaging learning environments. Nassreen explains: “In today’s intricate world where

roles and expectations are often predefined, we recognise that everyone has unique ideas craving expression. Ideahub is designed to be a sanctuary where these ideas can flourish without breaking the bank.”

Ideahub offers a variety of programmes, field trips and services aimed at integrating education with enjoyment. “We believe that learning should be an engaging, interactive process that captivates the imagination of both children and adults,” Nassreen emphasises. For instance, a simple activity like paper painting is elevated by using real painting stands and equipment, making the experience more dynamic and educational. One of the standout features of Ideahub is its ‘Drop and Shop’ programme. “This initiative is designed for busy parents who need a safe and engaging place for their children while they attend to errands,” Nassreen divulges. Unlike typical play areas where children play independently, Ideahub ensures a dedicated host actively interacts with them, making their time both safe and enriching.

Moreover, Ideahub’s versatile space is available for various events, from birthday parties and family gatherings to educational workshops and community meetings. This flexibility allows the centre to cater to the specific needs of its clients, making each event unique.

Safety is paramount at Ideahub. “Our safety protocols include comprehensive staff training in emergency procedures and regular inspections to ensure all play areas and equipment meet safety standards,” Nassreen notes.

Nassreen’s philosophy in life is deeply rooted in positivity and respect. “Whatever you do, just do it from the heart. Never hurt anyone. Always keep going, don’t be depleted by others, and God will do the rest for you,” she says. This mindset extends to her work at Ideahub, where she fosters an inclusive and encouraging environment for all visitors.

The impact of Ideahub is evident in the success stories of its participants.

Nassreen shares: “Our monthly care programme has been particularly beneficial for young participants who initially struggled with communication. We’ve seen remarkable progress in their language skills in less than a month.” For adults, workshops like ‘Coffee and Paint’ provide a creative and social environment that helps build friendships and establish a supportive community network.

Looking ahead, Nassreen envisions expanding Ideahub to make it more accessible to a broader audience. “Our long-term goal is to maintain the high quality of our current activities and services while opening new branches to ensure more families can benefit from our unique approach,” she concludes.

EMBRACING CHANGE

Explore the modern Arab mother’s multifaceted role in today’s world with Dr. Diana Cheaib Houry, a psychotherapist at Thrive Wellbeing Centre in Dubai who is licensed by the Community Development Authority.

In a world marked by constant evolution, the role of women has known many changes, specifically in an Arab world exposed to modernity. Access to education and to the public sphere, mainly through work, has made women’s identity more complex and their role multifaceted, no longer restricted to the roles of spouse and mother. Women have become an essential element in the social and economic world, but naturally this change also comes with an array of challenges, especially for mothers.

While change has been welcomed by women and fought for, embracing it isn’t always an easy process. Today’s women have choices and can set their priorities. Whilst choosing can be a symbol of freedom, it can often expose women to guilt, especially around motherhood which is still a very important component of women’s identity.

During our clinical practice, we often witness the fear of missing out on motherhood. Women are frequently reminded that “careers are important but don’t forget your personal life”. We also witness how becoming a mother can be an intense identity shift. A lot of apprehension can be shared around how to manage a career and motherhood, with many women confessing after giving birth “no one prepared me for this” or “this is not what I expected”.

Here are a few things we need to consider:

Who Are The Modern Mothers of Today?

Testimonials of today’s mothers give us a glimpse into who they can be:

• They are definitely more educated than the previous generations. They are exposed, if not over exposed to knowledge around parenting, through literature and social media.

• They now have the choice of when to conceive and often have full time jobs with more advanced careers, which can mean they are capable, and are described as “modern” but have also interiorised the traditional way of parenting.

• Modern mothers put pressure on themselves to achieve in motherhood, as well as in their career in the same phase. They often have high standards for their children’s wellbeing: for instance, we notice that more mothers are committing to breastfeeding for a longer period, watching their children’s diet, activities and psychological balance. They are more insightful, aim to break generational trauma and look to adopt a different way of parenting from their parents.

• They aim not to sacrifice their femininity in exchange for motherhood.

• They don’t have a guideline or a reference, since the one of their own mothers isn’t necessarily adapted to their reality.

All these expectations from “modern” motherhood are faced everyday with the reality of lack of control, and the emotional challenges once the baby is there. Motherhood isn’t an intellectual process but an emotional one. The loss of control is one of the most difficult challenges for working mothers, so familiar with control and management in the setting of work: “I have never been such a mess”, a working mother of two recently confessed.

What Are the Mental Challenges for Modern Motherhood?

All these characteristics can lead today’s mothers to be very hard on themselves when exposed to contradictions and mental load. They find themselves multitasking, and wearing many hats, without necessarily having a solid support system. Even though we notice that some fathers are becoming more involved in child care, men didn’t experience a radical shift in their roles: work and fatherhood have always been a part of their identity. Therefore, the urgency of adjusting isn’t the same as in women. Additionally, the presence of a “village” or community around the mother isn’t necessarily part of the “modern” life anymore.

In such conditions, many mothers experience, for instance, anxiety around the separation from their newborn in order to resume work. Parenting in loneliness can be the outcome, in a world where image and competition can weigh on mothers. Having ideals that aren’t easy to fill can provoke discomfort, shake self-confidence, create an identity crisis, and also show symptoms of depression and anxiety. In many cases, we find the exhaustion and burn out behind the symptoms are presented.

Now, How Do We Prevent and Overcome These Challenges?

Women’s roles are progressing faster than the social structures, laws and the capacity for fathers to adjust. Even if women are showing remarkable flexibility, creativity and adaptability related to their multifaceted identity, we need to ensure it is not at the great cost of their mental health. Dr Diana reminds us of two realities:

system needs to support them, so they can succeed in smoothly embracing the change and be the reference for next generations, the reference they didn’t have!

1. Today’s mothers cannot be everything for everyone, everywhere and all the time. It is important for them to listen to their limits. This will reduce the guilt and the conflict that can be expressed in overcompensating: compensating for their children because they work and compensating for their work because they have children. Adjusting their ideals and perfectionism and asking for support can be a key. That is precisely Winnicott’s point, who believed that the way to be a good mother is to be a “good enough mother”, which also allows good enough parenting.

2. Today’s mothers can’t make it alone when exposing them to this shift. The whole

The modern Arab mother’s multifaceted role in today’s world is a testament to their resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to nurturing both family and society. Embracing change with grace and determination, they have evolved beyond traditional stereotypes, becoming a driving force in shaping the future. As a cornerstone of the family unit and a catalyst for progress, the modern Arab mother exemplifies the power of embracing change, demonstrating that with an open heart and a forward-looking mindset, they not only thrive in the face of transformation but also contribute significantly to the positive evolution of community and the broader global landscape.

BORN TO INSPIRE

Madhu Sarda is a multifaceted individual, blending her roles as a seasoned mountaineer, accomplished artist, motivational speaker, author and yoga instructor. She spoke to Kristian Harrison about her journey, which has spanned across five continents and peaks above 5,000 meters, and her relentless pursuit of adventure and self-discovery.

Born in Nepal, Ms. Sarda’s fascination with mountaineering began early, inspired by the majestic Himalayas she viewed from her hometown of Biratnagar. “From a young age, taking flights from Biratnagar to Kathmandu, I was fascinated by the beauty and challenge of the Himalayas,” she reflects. However, it wasn’t until 2018, with encouragement from Michelin Star Chef Vineet Bhatia, also a popular restaurateur in Bahrain, that she seriously took up the challenge. In her words: “Each climb is a journey not just to the summit, but also within oneself, testing physical endurance, mental strength and resilience.”

while in my talks, it enriches storytelling and engagement,” she explains.

well-being. “Yoga improves core strength and flexibility, which aids in climbing. It also helps with muscle recovery and injury prevention,” she notes.

Living in Bahrain, Ms. Sarda maintains her connection with nature and adventure by exploring local beaches, swimming, and engaging in outdoor sports. She also joins local active outdoor groups like Bahrain Hikes and plans trips to neighbouring countries to satisfy her adventurous spirit.

As a motivational speaker, Ms. Sarda leverages her platform to inspire others to pursue their passions and live fulfilling lives. She shares personal stories of challenges and triumphs, providing practical advice for setting goals and overcoming obstacles. “My aim is to motivate people to believe in themselves, embrace their passions, and pursue their dreams with unwavering commitment,” she emphasises. Her favourite speaking engagements include sessions at St. Christopher’s School in Bahrain, where the enthusiasm and curiosity of children make the experience particularly rewarding.

Ms. Sarda is also an author, with three published books: Everest in My Heart (2020), Manifesting Mountains (2022) and Moon Mountain (2023). These works offer readers a captivating journey through her mountaineering expeditions, intertwined with powerful lessons on overcoming challenges and embracing passion. Recognising the gender disparity in fields like mountaineering, her works champion diversity and inclusivity, striving to create a more empowering environment for all individuals to pursue their passions.

Ms. Sarda’s most memorable mountaineering feats includes conquering Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. “As I set out on the summit push, the biting cold pierced through me like needles, making me question if I had what it takes to continue,” she recounts. Her mantra of tackling one hour at a time eventually saw her reach the summit after 12 gruelling hours.

As an artist, Ms. Sarda’s creativity enriches both her mountaineering and her motivational talks. “In mountaineering, creativity manifests in perception and appreciation of nature’s intricate details,

Her art has been showcased in esteemed venues like Bahrain Financial Harbour and the Colour of the East Art Gallery, and she has adorned spaces with murals for numerous establishments in the Kingdom. Her passion for giving back is evident in her work with autistic children and underprivileged kids in Bahrain and Nepal through art therapy and education. She’s also conducted numerous art workshops, sharing her expertise in Madhubani and Mandala paintings.

Additionally, as a certified yoga instructor, she integrates yoga and meditation into her trekking expeditions to maintain physical and mental

Finally, in her commitment to sustainability, Ms. Sarda practices Green Project Management (PMO) principles, promoting responsible practices to minimise environmental impact. “By prioritising sustainability in mountaineering endeavours, we can protect natural habitats, ensure the long-term viability of mountain ecosystems, and foster a deeper appreciation for nature among enthusiasts,” she concludes.

“I now channel that creativity into my photography, but if I had to recount one instance that led to my decision to be a photographer, it would be when I took my first photo for a friend,” she says. “That photoshoot ended up changing the entire course of her life with her finding the love of her life. Seeing the joy and success that came from it inspired me. The experience showed me the profound impact photography can have on people’s lives, and it’s a feeling that continues to drive my passion for what I do.”

She earned her degree from the New York Institute of Photography, but her education didn’t stop there. “I’m constantly seeking fresh and innovative ways to enhance my work and elevate my photography. I make it a priority to stay updated with the latest trends and techniques, ensuring that my skills are always evolving and improving,” she explains.

In 2007, Nina arrived on the sunny shores of Bahrain where she focused on event photography. The experience gave her a unique insight into the Bahraini market and allowed her to meet people. Now, her focus has shifted primarily to real estate photography and product photography.

“I focus on conveying the true value of the product I’m capturing. It’s all about the fine details—whether it’s intricate jewellery, a stunning interior, luxurious fabric, or unique packaging. Often, these elements can go unnoticed, so my goal is to highlight and elevate them to a whole new level,” she adds.

“Contributing my artistic vision to our lovely Bahrain is what I consider my most notable achievement,” she says happily.

With the recent developments in AI, she has now discovered a whole new avenue for her creativity and hones the capabilities of AI to enhance her compositions. She can now offer a broader range of photos that were simply not possible before.

“I’m extremely excited about the evolving technology and the new creative possibilities it brings! At Motion Magic, we’ve already started integrating new tech with our designs, and the results have been incredible,” she says.

As for capturing the perfect portrait, she believes it isn’t just about having the right equipment. “With great lighting, meticulous editing, and knowing the best poses for your subject, you can achieve stunning results. But most importantly, it’s about the chemistry you create with your clients. When they feel at ease, enjoy the process, and are comfortable in front of the lens, that’s where the real magic happens,” she says.

“Working with Nasra Alabrawi and Aaron Grimley for Woman This Month’s cover was a pleasure; they are fantastic, and the session was smooth and enjoyable. Collaborating with people like them reminds me why I got into photography in the first place. Experiences like this fuel my passion and make my work truly rewarding.”

Chartered Manager, Eman Deabil (DipESG, PfMP, IPMO-P, SIP), explored the representation of women in the boardroom in Bahrain listed companies in 2022. This month, she explores the growth of this representation from 5.9 percent to 7.6 percent over the last two years.

In 2022, we examined women representation in the boardroom of the listed companies in Bahrain. The percentage of representation at the time was 5.9 percent.

In Bahrain we have 42 publicly listed companies on Bahrain Bourse spanning over nine categories (information for which can be found on the official Bahrain Bourse website). An analysis was conducted by looking at the Board of Directors of each company and the following conclusion was drawn:

From the above, we can observe that 28 of the total 368 board seats are attributed to women, which represents 7.6 percent, whereas 340 are attributed to men, which represents 92.4 percent.

Out of the 43 companies, 22 companies (around 50 percent) have no women representation (0 percent) meaning that these 22 listed companies have allmale boards.

LIFESTYLE | opinion

From the table above, we can see that there is a positive progress on the women representation front with an increase in percentage from 5.9 percent to 7.6 percent. This progress is primarily driven by the following factors:

• More Women Directors: The number of women holding board positions rose from 22 to 28, representing a gain of six seats.

• Decrease in Men Directors: The number of men holding board positions decreased from 349 to 340.

• Slight Decrease in Board Seats: The total number of board seats across all companies decreased from 371 to 368.

Despite male directors still holding the majority of board chairmanships (41 out of 42), a positive development sees one listed company now led by a female chairperson.

Unlike what we observed in 2022, “overboarding” was limited to male directors in the listed companies, this time, there is one female who is sitting in two boards. Some male directors on the contrary are serving in up to six boards – which is beyond the limits set in the Corporate Governance Code (2018) of Bahrain that states the following under Principle 1:

“8. No director may have directorship of more than five (5) Public Joint Stock Companies in the Kingdom of Bahrain, provided that no conflict of interest may exist. The Board may not propose the election or re-election of any director who participates in more than five companies’ BoDs.”

Around 16 directors hold doctoral degrees (based on name prefixes), including two women. While high academic degrees can be

an asset, a balanced and well-rounded board requires directors with diverse qualifications and experience who bring real value.

This year, a trend has emerged (based on observations of family names); several directors appear to be passing their board seats to their sons. This practice raises significant concerns about board independence, expertise, fairness, diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity. Notably, this practice seems to be exclusive to male directors.

While the increase in women directors on boards in Bahrain is encouraging, significant work remains to achieve gender parity. Addressing over-boarding, promoting diverse qualifications on boards, and tackling other issues highlighted are crucial for fostering strong corporate governance practices.

HOW TO TEACH KIDS ABOUT MONEY?

We’ve all heard it a million times: Money makes the world go round!

Woman This Month’s Parenting Columnist Ouiam El Hassani tells us how we can teach our kids about money.

Teaching your kids about money early in life can help them to learn healthy financial habits that will last a lifetime. The more they know, the better they’ll be at making monetary decisions, whether it’s buying a toy they want or saving for college. But let’s face it – it can be a tough concept to explain.

TEACHING YOUNG CHILDREN

Kids are very adept at picking up both verbal and nonverbal cues about how their parents are handling finances at home so it’s important to keep that in mind as you bring up the subject.

Be mindful of discussing money out loud: If you spend time worrying about money or bickering with your partner about upcoming bills at home, kids are able to pick up on the stress you’re feeling. For many children,

their attitudes towards money, later in life, are mostly formed by the time they’re sevenyears-old.

That means that your little ones are not only learning how you interact with money but are forging behaviours they’ll likely continue for years to come. While it’s okay to discuss money around your children, try to pass down positive attitudes you’d like them to adopt, not ones you’d like them to avoid.

Never too early to teach savings; saving as an adult usually looks like a separate bank account you transfer money to each month. For kids, money is a lot more visual. The best way to help them understand the concept of saving is to use a jar that lives in a visible place, so they can watch money being put away and spent at a later date. If they get an allowance or a gift, show them how to put savings away first.

PRETEENS

Many parents start giving allowances to their children as they start middle school. Instead of giving your kids an allowance just as a weekly or monthly spending stipend, consider using it as a way for kids to earn it as a reward in exchange for doing chores. An allowance can be a flexible amount that increases as kids take on more chores. Teaching the value of money is an age-old concept, but it never stops being relevant.

Another essential step is teaching your kids how to understand needs vs. wants. For many preteens, this is the first time they start to recognise that others may have more than they do. This is the perfect age to start explaining the difference between wants and needs.

When you’re in the store and your children are asking for a new video game or a piece of clothing, instead of just tossing it into the cart, talk to them about whether it’s something that’s really important to them or if it’s an impulsive financial purchase. Understanding the difference between wants and needs can help kids make sound financial choices later in life.

TEENS

High school years are the final step before your kids make it out into the world on their own. Their financial fundamentals are well underway and it’s time to help them start learning how to make and use their own money. Encourage your kids to take up summer jobs. Teenage years are a great time for kids to start finding a summer job or internships, to supplement their allowance or gifts that they get throughout the year.

There are many opportunities for older kids to make an income online or by getting entrepreneurial on their own. No matter how old your children are, it’s important to show them that a strong understanding and relationship to their personal finances can help them succeed later in life. This starts with passing on positive behaviors for them to follow at a young age and then having financial conversations with them as they get older.

Learning about money is an ongoing pursuit and there are lessons to be learned at every step of the way.

Dance!

All eyes were on the stage at the recently held Woman of the Year Awards 2024 launch event as the dance troupe PRISMBLISS by Abhirami performed. Lisa Daniels meets with the troupe’s leading lady, Abhirami Saharajan, to discuss dance, her source of inspiration and her switch from being a Chartered Accountant to a dance tutor.

Canyou tell us about the kind of dance instruction you offer?

I have been a dance instructor for over ten years. I train students in Indian Classical forms like Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, as well as Bollywood, Western, contemporary, semi classical, folk and fusion forms. I believe that anybody can dance! I strive to encourage passion, focus and discipline in all my students. I have also been a licensed Zumba instructor for four years.

I find it essential that I focus on body positivity and women’s fitness. In fact, I am building a community of women who can dance their way to fitness and regain their lost confidence, mobility, strength and health. What styles of dance do you choreograph and what kind of events do you perform at?

Choreography is something I enjoy the most. I choreograph many styles such as IndoWestern fusion, contemporary fusion, and Indo-Arab fusions. My choreography involves lots of expression, formation and storytelling. We have performed at a lot of private and public functions in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and India. Private functions include sangeeths, marriages, Eid functions, mehendi etc.

You recently performed, with your dance troupe, at the Woman of the Year Awards 2024 launch event. Can you tell us a little

about the performance and how you drew inspiration for this particular dance?

My performance was dedicated to all women. The message I wanted to portray is that women possess such strength, beauty, determination and passion. I believe being a woman is a true blessing. A woman has many roles to play in her life and does so with immeasurable beauty, strength and balance.

You had a huge turning point in your career when you went from being a chartered accountant to a dance tutor. Was there a defining moment that led to this decision or was it a long-held ambition?

My parents enrolled me for dance classes when I was just three-years-old and since then dance has been my passion. When I finished my schooling I started teaching dance in the evenings for some pocket money. I never stopped dancing throughout my studies, or corporate work life. I always dreamt of running my own business and then

finally, during the pandemic, I decided to try and pursue my passion. I haven’t regretted a day since then. Teaching comes naturally to me and I also learn a lot from each student that comes to me, no matter their age.

Finally, what are your next steps for the future and how do you see your career progressing?

I am in the process of setting up a bigger arts and movement studio with new branding. I also definitely want to venture into introducing more art forms and instructors to Bahrain. I started my social media journey three years ago with dance routines, make-up routines, lifestyle vlogs, modelling for brands and much more. I definitely want to dedicate more time to work with more brands and grow my presence on various social media platforms, such as Youtube, TikTok and Instagram.

UNDERSTANDING THE SPECTRUM

Stella Philip is an International Behaviour Analyst who has dedicated her career to working with neurodivergent children, particularly those with autism. She tells Kristian Harrison more about her work to help children reach their potential and breaks down stigmas and misconceptions.

Achance encounter with a child with challenging behaviour in a supermarket ignited Stella Philip’s passion for supporting younger people with neurodevelopmental differences and their families.

Sadly, Ms. Philip frequently encounters myths and misconceptions about autism in her work, such as the common question she receives from parents: “When will my child be cured?” She strongly emphasises that autism is not something to be cured but a condition that requires support and services to help individuals lead happy and fulfilling lives.

Another misconception is that all individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) either possess special talents or have learning disabilities. Ms. Philip clarifies that people with ASD, like everyone else, have unique strengths and weaknesses. She also addresses the misunderstanding that being antisocial might indicate ASD, noting that while autistic individuals may require support in social interactions, being shy or preferring solitude doesn’t necessarily imply autism. She adds that while excessive screen time can hinder cognitive development, it is not a cause of autism.

“Early intervention is crucial for children with autism,” Ms. Philip asserts. “These programmes, designed to meet the specific needs of young children with ASD, can significantly enhance their development in communication, socialisation, behaviour and cognition. They can also help children develop social and communication skills, reduce challenging behaviours and improve overall quality of life. The sooner the intervention, the better for the child.”

Ms. Philip tailors her approach to meet each child’s unique needs through thorough assessment and evaluation which includes understanding the child’s language skills, social communication aptitude, sensory processing tendencies and other challenges. Collaborating with parents and caregivers, she develops personalised plans incorporating evidencebased practices. For younger children, she emphasises the importance of play-based activities to foster engagement and create natural opportunities for communication and social interaction.

In Bahrain, resources for children with autism are expanding. Ms. Philip argues that many organisations and intervention centres are emerging to spread awareness and support parents.

“Board-Certified Behaviour Analyst, Zahera Alanfooz, will soon release a new book focusing on inclusion and neurodiversity, and how to incorporate evidence-based practices to ensure inclusion in schools and community,” she explains. “This book could be highly beneficial for educators and parents alike, as are other support mechanisms such as the Bahrain Autistic Society, which offers workshops, participates in conferences and hosts inclusive events. One particularly useful resource is the Omneyat directory, which lists special education centres, paediatric specialists and other relevant information to support people with autism.”

Despite these resources, families in Bahrain face significant challenges in seeking support for their children with autism. Issues include determining the appropriate

therapies, financial burdens due to high costs and limited insurance coverage and emotional strain on families which often leads to stress and feelings of isolation. Additionally, enrolling children in mainstream schools and finding shadow teachers can be difficult, particularly when educators lack understanding or acceptance.

“Parents who have recently learned of their child’s autism should also take an active role in their child’s well-being,” Ms. Philip advises. “Educating themselves about ASD is crucial for understanding their child’s needs and making informed decisions about their care and interventions. Furthermore, educating siblings about neurodiversity and autism to foster understanding and support within the family is crucial.”

Finally, she calls for acceptance and empathy within families and communities to create a supportive environment. “By embracing differences, we can create a fairer world where individuals can be themselves and lead fulfilling lives,” she concludes.

REMEMBERING THE PRESENT, RECALLING THE PAST

Board-certified Behaviour Analyst, Fifi Kiwan, explains the difference between short-term and long-term memory.

Have you ever walked into a room and forgotten why you went there? Or struggled to recall a friend’s name, even though you’re sure you know it? These common experiences highlight the differences between our short-term and long-term memory.

Short-Term Memory: The Brain’s Sticky Note

Short-term memory is like a temporary workspace for your brain. It holds information you’re currently focused on, like a phone number you need to dial or a task you need to complete. But it can only hold onto that information for a short time – usually around 20-30 seconds before it starts to fade.

Think of it like a sticky note. You jot down a quick reminder, but if you don’t transfer that information somewhere more permanent,

the note (and the memory) gets lost. Kids are especially prone to this, as their short-term memory capacity is still developing.

Long-Term Memory: The Brain’s Filing Cabinet

In contrast, long-term memory is where we store information for the long haul. It’s like a vast filing cabinet in your brain, holding onto facts, experiences, skills, and memories from throughout your life.

Unlike short-term memory, long-term memories can last for years or even a lifetime. That’s why you can still remember your first day of school, even though it happened decades ago. The information has been safely tucked away in your long-term storage.

Bridging the Gap

Of course, short-term and long-term memory

don’t exist in isolation. They work together to help us function. Information first enters our short-term memory, and with enough repetition and meaningful connections, it can get filed away in long-term storage.

This is why studying techniques like flashcards and mnemonic devices are so effective – they help transfer information from your temporary sticky note to your permanent filing cabinet. The more you engage with and relate to new information, the better it sticks.

Remembering What Matters

Whether you’re a kid cramming for a test or an adult trying to keep track of your to-do list, understanding the difference between short-term and long-term memory can help you optimise how you store and recall information.

How we can leverage the strengths of both to enhance our cognitive abilities:

Short-Term Memory (STM)

STM is the brain’s temporary storage system, holding information for a brief period, usually around 20-30 seconds. It has a limited capacity, typically around seven items at a time.

STM is essential for immediate tasks and processing new information, acting as a mental workspace. However, STM is fragile and easily disrupted by distractions or interruptions.

Long-Term Memory (LTM)

LTM is the brain’s extensive storage system, capable of holding vast amounts of information for extended periods, from hours to a lifetime. LTM can be divided into explicit memory (conscious recall, like facts and experiences) and implicit memory (unconscious, like skills and procedures). Information in LTM is stored in a more stable and durable manner, making it accessible even after long periods. Effective encoding strategies, such as elaborative encoding, can help transfer information from STM to LTM.

So, the next time you walk into a room and forget why you went there, don’t be too hard on yourself. Just take a deep breath, retrace your steps, and give your shortterm memory a little nudge. With a bit of practice, you’ll be a memory pro in no time - both in the moment and for the long haul.

What is one of the most memorable experiences that you have ever had?

Watching the sunrise from the highest peak of Europe, Mount Elbrus. As we ascended throughout the night in extreme cold, the first rays of the sun felt like a divine blessing. And when I looked up, I was awe-struck by the breathtaking pyramid formed by the peak’s reflection on the surrounding mountains. That singular moment made the entire journey worth every ounce of effort.

InHerShoes

What’s your dream car?

Semreen Ahmed is the Marketing Manager of Bentley & Lamborghini Bahrain at Behbehani Brothers W.L.L. This month, we live life in the fast lane with her, and take a walk in her shoes!

On vacation, do you prefer an itinerary that’s quite relaxing or full of adventure?

My life in Bahrain is quite relaxing so as someone who thrives on adventure, I definitely prefer an itinerary that’s full of adventure when planning a vacation. The thrill of exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations and conquering mountains in different countries drives me.

When in need of comfort food do you opt for fine dining or fast food?

I don’t consider myself a foodie, so I usually don’t opt for fine dining or fast food. Instead, I gravitate towards simple, clean, and nourishing options. This could mean enjoying a wholesome, home-cooked meal or discovering a local eatery that serves simple, satisfying dishes. But honestly, I’m quite adaptable when it comes to food – I can eat straight out of a tuna can and be perfectly content (a skill that has certainly come in handy during my mountain adventures).

Which is worse: Thursday night traffic or Sunday morning traffic?

I’d say both can be equally challenging, but if I had to choose, I’d lean towards Sunday morning being worse since I have no choice but to navigate through the traffic, which can be quite a hassle.

In the past my dream car had been the Lamborghini Countach - a true classic and a masterpiece. At present, I’d say the Bentley Continental GT (W12) because it’s the last of the Grand Tourer’s with the legendary Bentley engines and the Lamborghini Revuelto since it’s the first HPEV starting a new era for the brand, however, still sticking to the Lamborghini DNA.

The best advice you have ever received is:

“You can’t control the wind, but you can adjust your sails.”

Your best professional practice is:

Consistently upholding the highest standards of integrity and excellence. This involves conducting business with honesty, transparency and a commitment to delivering exceptional service to our esteemed clientele. It’s imperative to maintain strong work ethics and cultivate meaningful relationships with both our customers and partners.
