Woman This Month is determined to help the women of Bahrain to sit up and take note of the damage that a sedentary lifestyle can do to the body. Many people are under the impression that exercise is all about tonnes of effort, hours of time and pouring sweat. Okay so it is, in part. However, what a lot of people don’t realise is that having a go at improving muscle tone and stamina doesn’t have to be all hard work. The gym can be a fun and sociable place, with experts on hand to help tailormake a routine to suit you. Plus, exercise releases endorphins in your body which make you happy — so you can improve your mood as well as your physique! So, to kick off the first month of our campaign, we have an issue jam packed with health and fitness advice. Not only have we sent our own reporters out to gather information about the best ways to approach exercise, we have also rounded up the Kingdom’s leading experts to talk about what each of their premises has to offer. If you are already sold on the fitness idea and need a little light relief, then head straight for our jewellery feature. I really appreciate that this magazine talked about feminism in the October issue. It is a commonly used word when I discuss Islam with my peers. A lot of people don’t know anything about it, but they are still throwing around the word as if they own it. I have been in Bahrain for three years and I am married to a Bahraini. I was not originally a Muslim, but now that I have been living in their culture for years, I appreciate its values. So often women assume that the Muslim religion is antiwomen and this isn’t true. I can see that in Bahrain, the Muslim religion is often used to treat women with respect and love. My husband, who is Muslim, treats me superbly. Leslie, by email.
A Call to Action
Your October issue of WTM, in which Natasha Bird interviewed Dr. Margot Badran was illuminating and a call to action. With the presence of our four women in parliament and eleven in the Shura Council, it is apparent that more and more women are affirming their right to be heard. Women can no longer stand to be treated as second class citizens, without a voice. Dr. Badran’s dedication and commitment to studying the role of women in the Islamic world, based on the teachings of the Qur’an is to be highly commended. In a bid to be taken more seriously, all women need to take a stance, stay true to their convictions and be united in their fight for freedom and equal rights. wenty-five year old Reem has just had a healthy baby girl after a normal delivery. Yet rather than elated, all she feels is tired and miserable. Instead of smiling endlessly, she occasionally dissolves into tears for no apparent reason. Despite being a first-time mother, she is taking no pleasure in the baby at all. What Reem feels and countless other new mothers experience is Postpartum Depression, a widespread illness that can take a devastating toll on a mother’s mental health. While it is common for mothers to experience a period of low mood after childbirth, PPD is more severe, occurring in 10 to 15 per cent or one in seven to ten mothers. According to psychotherapist Thoraiya Kanafani, it is important to make a distinction between Postpartum Depression and the usual “baby blues�. “Baby blues are extremely common among women within the first two weeks of childbirth and do not require professional help. However, if the symptoms persist for longer than a month or become more severe, it can develop into Postpartum Depression and professional help should be sought. If left untreated, PPD can last for months or years and may put the mother and child at risk,� she warns.

A mother suffering from PPD experiences dramatic mood swings, loss of sleep, appetite and interest in activities. She may appear confused, fatigued, experience uncontrollable bouts of crying or major disruptions to her sleep cycle. In the most severe cases, a mother’s thinking can be disrupted to the point of psychosis and she might develop a desire to hurt herself. Severe or ongoing PPD can hinder a mother’s ability to care for and bond with her child during the critical early developmental phase of an infant.

While there are a multitude of factors contributing to PPD, it mainly results from hormonal changes within the body, especially the fluctuating levels of oestrogen and progesterone. The stress of the new responsibility and change, sleep deprivation, high parenting expectations, and lack of a support network all add to the stress levels of a new mother who is often juggling the multiple roles of wife, mother and career woman alone. Women who have a family history of depression are genetically more susceptible to it.

While it’s possible to recover completely from PPD with the right treatment, those who suffer from this condition have a greater chance of experiencing it again with the next baby. Often, new moms worry about the way they feel and their lack of 46
bonding with their baby, but they avoid seeking help because they’re ashamed to divulge their feelings. However, depending on the severity of the condition, a series of interventions, including dietary changes, exercise and therapy can help these mothers shake away the blues.

Since a major cause of PPD is changes within the body, a good diet and healthy eating habits are important to fight this condition. “We tell young mothers to develop healthy eating habits and ask them to exercise. If she can lose the weight she gained during pregnancy, it makes her feel light, energetic and good about herself,� says Julie Abillamaa, senior dietician at Health Watchers Bahrain. A diet rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants can help lift the mood of mothers who otherwise feel frustrated and lacking in energy. Increasing intake zinc-rich foods, such as eggs, sea food and legumes, boosts the immune system, while colourful fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants including Vitamin C, A and selenium, which help the body recover from tiredness. “Eating bigger portions is not required of new mothers. If breast feeding, a mother needs to increase her food intake by 400 calories at the most. Mothers who eat healthily can actually drop up to half a kilo of weight every week during the lactating time,� says Julie. Exercise causes the brain to release endorphins which make you “happy� and half an hour’s exercise could be enough to make a mother feel comfortable in her own skin. The trick, Julie advises, lies in preparing yourself during the pregnancy and monitoring your weight gain instead of acting when it’s too late.

Therapy is the most effective way to treat PPD when it is moderate to severe in nature. In cases where the illness is experienced with severe functional impairment or with psychotic or suicidal characteristics — which is rare — it is necessary to seek therapeutic as well as medical help. “It’s best to talk about what you’re feeling. Psychotherapy is a very
effective way for mothers to communicate openly, in a non-judgmental atmosphere, about what they are experiencing. If you or someone close to you is suffering from PPD, it is important to seek professional assistance from a medical doctor and a mental health professional,� says Thoraiya.

Every mother needs some “me time� everyday, so that she can look after herself and simply “be�. For this, support from family and friends, especially her partner, is crucial. Furthermore, a support network is essential to every mother experiencing PPD. “Having a support group or network could be a pivotal part of a PPD treatment programme because, regardless of the difficulty one is encountering, it is comforting to know that there’s someone who offers non-judgemental support, is able to listen and provide sound advice, and who has experienced the same, but has come through the difficulty,� says structural yoga therapist, Lavina Faleiro. Lavina offers pre and post-natal yoga classes as well as birthpreparation workshops in collaboration with colleagues Jasmine Smith, doula and Vicky Honar, lactation consultant and midwife. The group also offers breastfeeding and early parenting support groups for mothers-to-be and mothers with babies. Lavina feels such a network is especially important in Bahrain, where a Bahraini mother might find herself isolated, if extended family members are working, and expat mothers, who may find themselves without support because their families are all back home. Mums In Bahrain is another social networking website where moms can meet and exchange notes with other mothers. Boasting over 5,000 members in Bahrain, the club recently held a seminar at the Royal Hospital in Bahrain with dedicated doctors advising mothers on PPD. The website is also launching an interactive section: “Ask the Doctor� on its website, where parents will be able to communicate directly with family doctors and paediatricians and have their queries resolved. Your article in the October issue on post-natal depression gave a sad account of a woman’s experience. Someone once asked me what it feels like and the only thing I can compare it to is swimming in glue. It’s impossible to get anywhere no matter how hard you swim. It’s a crippling feeling that comes when you least expect it or indeed least have time to deal with it. You have a wonderful new baby — a bundle of joy and then, suddenly, you feel unhappy. It’s hard to motivate yourself to do the simplest of things. It takes blood, sweat and tears to be a mum. The only way to get over it is to take action. See your GP, get out of the house, give yourself small goals each day, talk to people, laugh, breathe, chill out, accept help and think positively. Just think that you are a fantastic and wonderful person. You have created another human life. Be proud. Be positive. You will be a stronger person when you get through to the other side of this. t was a beautiful day for a boutique opening party. The sun was softly shining down on the invited guests through the domed skylight in the Moda Mall atrium; introductions and beverages were accompanied by the delightful trill of harp music and models glided among the chatting crowd, dripping in diamonds and other precious gems. Truly a feast for the senses! In amongst the movement of the ribbon cutting and the photoshoots, co-president of Chopard, Caroline Gruosi-Sheufele was gracious enough to grace me with her presence for an in-depth discussion of the latest collections, the exciting prospect of the new boutique and their imminent presence at the Jewellery Arabia exhibition. Natasha: How long has the new boutique been in the works? Caroline: This boutique has been over seven years in the making! It is the longest boutique project that we have ever had, but it has certainly been worth it. We have spent a few years honing our ideas, changing the scope of the Chopard boutique concept and perfecting the space. Luckily for Bahrain, the concept that they have ended up with is our newest and freshest. Our latest ranges and our accessories are more clearly showcased in this boutique and Bahrain is the first country in the Middle East to have this style. Natasha: What are the new collections for Autumn? Caroline: We are reintroducing our Animal Collection, which we brought

out last year to celebrate our 150th anniversary. Among the high-end jewellery we have a new collection called Temptations. This comprises of a lot of colours, a lot of pieces with semi precious stones. It is very fresh and very refined. I have a lot of experience with semi precious stones, so we have made use of that in this collection. Natasha: Is there a particular sort of woman that you imagine wearing these designs? Caroline: A woman with taste! In all seriousness though, we love selling our collections to any woman who appreciates quality. Natasha: What will you be showing at Jewellery Arabia? Caroline: We will be showing a wide selection of pieces from our collections. We want to make sure we appeal to a range of different people. We will have pieces from the Animal and Temptations collections, as well as some of our cuter, fresher designs from our Mickey Mouse collection. Natasha: Are different designs popular in the Middle East to elsewhere? Caroline: No. This is why our core product lines are so good, because they sell everywhere. A Lesson in Unique
As jewellery is one of the main focuses of November, we went down to Curve Jewellery to have a look at one of the more unique boutiques in the Kingdom.
M
Ms Khulood A.Qader is something of a phenomenon. Of the many jewellery designers and jewellery merchants in the Gulf, it would be difficult to find someone more qualified for the job. Having completed her bachelor’s degree as a chemist, she moved on to what she was truly passionate about — jewellery. Khulood went on to study at the GIA — the Gemological Institute of America, where she received a gemology certificate, equipping her with the expertise to assess the shape, colour and the quality of lustre among many of the most coveted gemstones in the world. It is this expertise, coupled with her years of industry experience, which she has brought to the table to create her own company — Curve Jewellery. “I am a gemologist, so I love to use all the gemstones available, such as diamonds, emeralds, rubies, quartz and turquoise, but I am also a pearl specialist”, says Khulood. “I bring a particular knowledge to the table which lets me select the most valuable and beautiful pearls. I look for the whiter ones, which people love and tend to carry more value and I use a variety of sizes, although the larger ones are more expensive. Gulf pearls are particularly special. They have a unique quality and are highly sought 18

after, which means they are becoming more and more of a rarity. I try to use pearls all over my collections, including in the engagement rings”. Not only is Khulood versed in the art of gemology, she is also a passionate and skilful designer. She is able to blend her knowledge of the gemstones with her eye for pattern and aesthetics, to produce some very special and individual designs. “I am inspired by nature and I often draw from different types of flower, but I also like to bring in some architectural elements. My knowledge of the gems means I know exactly what will look good where. Diamonds, for example, are very hard and can handle many designs, even some of the most intricate and detailed, whereas emeralds, on the other hand, you have to be much more careful with, because they will not just fit easily into any shape, pattern or metal”, she explains. Probably the most appealing aspect of Curve Jewellery is the offer of customisation. Khulood will personally sit down with her clients and co-design according to their taste and means. A Lesson in Style She might be the editor of Woman This Month, but Natasha Bird has more than one string to her bow. She’s recently seen her first eBook published, so we grabbed five minutes of her time to talk about it.

atasha Bird has a few tricks up her sleeve. The latest rabbit she has pulled out of her surprisingly deep hat takes the shape of an eBook on style. Part self-help, part fashion, this book is an easy but delightful read. We sat Natasha down to have a chat about her latest project. Approached by a design and publishing company to be part of a series of digital books called100 Lessons in 100 Words or Less, Natasha jumped at the chance to realise one of her longstanding ambitions. “I just saw it as this great opportunity to combine three of the things I love most in the world — fashion, women and writing. I am a fashion addict. I am up early every morning, trawling all the best blogs, watching the trends like a hawk”, she told us. Many of the results of her obsession with fashion can be seen between the pages of this very magazine. She is adamant, though, that this book is not simply about fads and trends, whether brown is the new black or how high your heels should be. “My interest in fashion and style has never been restricted to what the designers dictate. I have always been passionate about women. I am a strident feminist, who believes that women are simply great and are way too often made to feel insecure or less significant than they should be. The female psyche is an amazingly intricate thing, but it is riddled with problems”, she told us. “I think low self-esteem is one of our biggest and most unfortunate failings. There is so much pressure out there — from men, from gossip magazines, but also from ourselves and our peers — to be thinner, taller, better endowed, smaller footed and so on. Everyone has their insecurities, but among women, you often find that these fears are so consuming that they actually stand in the way of our achieving something important for ourselves”, Natasha elaborates. So, enthused by her love of women and her passion for fashion, Natasha decided to use the 100 Lessons series as a platform for helping women to feel better about themselves. “This sort of thing has had a surge in popularity, what with the likes of Trinny and Susannah and Gok Wan, so I had to make sure that I had something different to offer”, Natasha explains. “ I have always admired Gok — he’s done brilliant things for the women of Britain — but I thought that there was probably space for someone a little bit younger, but also an experienced writer who might be able to inject a bit of humour into the topic because, let’s face it, if we can laugh at ourselves and poke fun at our own insecurities, then we have as good as conquered them”. “It is a book with three main ingredients. It’s one part self-help, one part style advice and one part comedy”, says Natasha, “or at least I hope it’s funny! My friends have said it makes them laugh, but I hope it’s not lost on other people”. We were lucky enough to have a preview of the book, before it hit the shops and we are inclined to agree with Natasha’s friends. The book is
split into 100 chapters, each one no longer than 100 words. So, essentially, it is a collection of little nuggets of information, which makes it really easy to dip into and pick up and put down whenever you have a spare five minutes. It’s certainly not War and Peace, but then it isn’t trying to be. In one of our favourite chapters, titled “Candyfloss”, she laments the use of a particular shade of pink, claiming that it is the “colour of newborn baby girls, bubble gum machines and accessories for Chihuahuas” and might leave you looking a bit like you are “competing with Barbie for Ken’s affection”. In another, she likens some people’s posture in high heels to a cavewoman who has “just clubbed a small goat and is dragging it back to [her] cave”. It isn’t all about laughs though, as Natasha tells us. Some of the chapters contain genuinely insightful bits of information, aimed to improve the way women think of themselves. She lambasts the idea that women need to become more conservative, as soon as society tells them they are “old”. In the “Dress Your Age Myth” chapter, she says, “If you are happy and healthy, self-assured and confident, then don’t let out-dated rules govern your wardrobe”. When asked about these more self-help chapters, Natasha says, “Well it’s just so silly to let worries about our appearance stand in our way. Women still have a long way to go to achieve equality, so if we are too busy apologising for ourselves and the way we look; we’ll never concentrate on the things that really matter. So I put together a few quick rules to help make sure that women not only make the best of themselves, but also to help make sure they feel good about themselves in whatever they are wearing”. Believer Natasha Bird
Dreams can be built in a day and broken just as easily. No one said life was going to be plain sailing, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the ride.
W
hile the world might revolve at the same speed as it did a hundred years ago, the pace at which we live seems to increase exponentially as time goes on. This is the age of fast money, search engines, social networking, eBusinesses, viral advertising and conspicuous consumerism. We’ve learnt that if we want something, often all we have to do is Google it. But in a society that understands or expects instant gratification, what happens when we discover that success can be taken away as quickly as it was bestowed upon us? If I learnt anything from my interview with DJette Kiwi, it’s that if you want to live out a dream in a world that moves as fast as this one, you have to have more than one of them. Although Kiwi’s first dream was never handed to her on a plate — she trained extremely hard and competed even harder to become an Olympic hopeful in the art of Judo — she knows more than most what it means to feel the carpet pulled out from under your feet and to have to start again from scratch. DJette Kiwi stumbled into judo by accident. “I had two brothers”, she jokes, “I needed to learn self-defence!”. In fact, Kiwi had always had a competitive streak — “I was already doing kick-boxing and someone suggested that judo would be more appropriate for me”. Her tiny frame means that her reach is pretty small — not ideal for the boxing, but it turned out that she had a natural flair for judo and quickly became good at 22

it, so she started competing and attracting attention for her special talent. Within a few short years, Kiwi had turned judo from a hobby into a future. She won the Prime Minister’s scholarship to Auckland University in New Zealand, a year and a half earlier than many of her peers, on the grounds of her judo skills. In her last year, she went on to win a Commonwealth gold medal — a coveted and highly prestigious accolade for any athlete — and soon she found herself travelling all over the world to train and compete. Kiwi was living many an athlete’s dream. At just 21 years old, she was touring the globe, gaining recognition and facing competitors many years her senior. All too soon, though, this particular dream was to come crashing down around her. She was in Paris, preparing for the World Team Championships, having been chosen to represent the Oceana Region in her weight class. All eyes were on her, as selections for this event were presumed to be a precursor for the Olympics. “I think that, as many athletes do, I had reached a point where I was just taking in information and my body was responding to it instinctually. You realise, when you are at that level, that your main competition is yourself. You confront yourself and each fight is about discovering and learning from your own flaws”, Kiwi remembers. “I had my eye firmly on the Olympics and I definitely saw a bright future ahead of me”. She was unlucky. In the draw, she found she was to face the seventh best judo athlete in the world in her category. “I nearly beat her and at 21 that was a major achievement, but something happened and I didn’t quite manage it. A few days later I was told that I had ruptured a disc in my spine and that my career was effectively over”, she says, more nonchalantly than you might expect. But this isn’t the story of someone whose life was over at 21. It is what she did next that is really testament to her strength of character. “At first, I was in denial, but then, as I watched the Beijing Olympics on television, it really hit me. I was devastated. The thing is, though, that I had great friends around me”, she recalls. Kiwi’s friends helped her to realise that the world hadn’t ended with her judo career. The collapse of one dream signalled the beginning of another. With remarkable resilience, she picked herself up, dusted herself off and set about conquering a different world arena. Kiwi learnt that the best cure for disappointment was to throw herself wholeheartedly into other projects. “I was living in Paris at the time and I began taking every Paris is a place of such vibrancy opportunity to go out to events and to meet and decadence, but it has been people. This is how I came across Hovannes K., great to make the change. the producer from the world famous Buddha Bar. I Bahrain has a lot going on, but began writing the lyrics for some of his songs and the excitement, for me, lies in then doing the vocals. I ended up doing a stint as what it has yet to discover. a trend-forecaster for Tally Weil but, before that, I took up a PR position within the Coste group and started to help them to throw these big parties once a week”. With a finger in every pie, it was easy for Kiwi to uncover her hidden talents. Her parties became a resounding success and she discovered she had a real flair for giving the people on the Parisian social scene exactly what they wanted. “Michael Jackson’s ex-choreographer once said to me: “ Baby, of all the best parties I have been to in Paris, yours is my favourite!”. Quite a compliment, coming from him. Finding that the club scene was her new calling, she soon began training as a DJ and playing at some of the best and most exclusive clubs in Paris. “My first residency was in a restaurant bar, but I soon began doing sets at Montana and then at Black Calvados” — the club owned by sultry rocker Chris Cornell. In a relatively short space of time she found herself partying and playing alongside musical luminaries, such as Mr. Hudson and Pharell. Luckily for us, DJette Kiwi is now resident in Bahrain, helping us to develop our own clubbing scene. She’s played at 338 and is regularly called upon by Ground Zero to lend them her musical expertise for their venue soundtracks. “Paris is a place of such vibrancy and decadence, but it has been great to make the change. Bahrain has a lot going on, but the excitement, for me, lies in what it has yet to discover. New York house music, for example! When I first put on a NYH track, I found that no one else was really playing it, but everyone loved it! It’s a young market and it’s so much fun to explore the gaps and to introduce people to new things”, says Kiwi. There’s no doubt that hitting the big time as a DJ is the realisation of another popular dream. It seems, then, that the key to life in a world that can have you reaching for the stars and falling back down to earth with a thud from one minute to the next is resilience. DJette Kiwi seems to understand, more than most, that the world is a fickle place. To keep people entertained, you have to be willing to change it up with regular frequency. In her own words: “Life isn’t about having one shot at greatness. It is about taking every shot and hoping one or two of them hit the mark. You learn more when you fail, than when you succeed, as long as you just keep getting back up again. My life has had its ups and downs, but I have loved every minute of it”. woman this month | November 2011 |

The famous novelist and essayist changed the face of literature and discourse. She popularised the continuous train of thought process for writing prose and allowed us to enter her protagonist’s minds in ways that other authors hadn’t managed to achieve before. Rosa stunned the world when she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man, at a time when black people were still supposed to occupy a different section of the bus to their white counterparts. The Secretary of State and former First Lady has won more primaries and gathered more delegates than anyone in U.S. history. Although some might think it rather twee to include the people’s princess, or feel that her tabloidfodder social life somewhat eclipsed her good deeds in people’s minds, there is no doubt that her influence runs as far as it runs deep. She has become emblematic of the charities and causes that she dedicated life to — such as campaigns for the acceptance and care of AIDs victims, the homeless and the elderly.

Sheikha Lubna is the Minister for Foreign Trade in the UAE. This makes her the first woman to ever hold a ministerial post in the UAE. She has a globally recognised voice and, according to CEO Middle East magazine, she persistently “challeng[es] traditional opinions about women in business”. She also sits on the board of directors for the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She’s also pretty high on the Forbes 100 list.
Germaine Greer 1939-Present
Greer is one of the biggest feminist icons to have graced the earth in the last hundred years. Her book [ITALS] The Female Eunuch became somewhat of a feminist manifesto in the 1970s. Just because your knits and tweeds have made their way out of the closet, it doesn’t mean they’re a hide-out for flab. Fitness experts say autumn is the season to get in shape. 1. Outsmart the weather
The cooler, crisper air is excuse enough to drag out your bike. This is supposedly the perfect time to experiment new exercise routines. If you’re the adventurous kind, you could embrace the new trend on the island and go kayaking.
2. Step out of the box
Learning something new is the easiest trick in the book for refreshing the mind — a prerequisite to staying healthy. Take up boxing, dance classes or any fun sport. It might not show effects immediately; but you’ll burn a lot of calories mastering it (just in time for swimsuit season).
3. A dramatic workout
With all the new seasons of your favourite shows being screened, it’s hard not to spend time in front of the TV. Stay away from the couch, unless you’re working on those tricep dips. Walk or jog in place during the episode. Leave commercial breaks for lunges, squats and push-ups.
4. Overcoming challenges
Not everyone has the luxury of gym time — especially mothers of toddlers. You could turn your life into a workout circuit. Did you know, just by choosing to stand while you work, you burn 127 calories? That’s twice the amount you lose while sitting!
5. Slow down
It’s all right to pamper yourself. Reducing stress levels is a vital part of any fitness regime. Indulge in a massage, learn to meditate or 28

simply stop to take deep breaths. Exercise isn’t the only activity that promotes wellness.
6. Light up
You’re going to have darker mornings and longer nights. Face it. You’ll have to strap on reflectors on your shirt, shoes and bike. A flashlight and headlight can be helpful on some trails. And remember, “it’s too dark” doesn’t qualify as an excuse.
7. Avoid weather-shock
It was good while it lasted, but it’s time to bid farewell to those shorts and t-shirts and pull out the track suits and windcheaters. While you layer up, ensure the material closest to your body is synthetic to help you stay cool.
8. Find your motivation
Whether it is to lose weight or gain strength, focus is essential. Make sure to have fun and enjoy your routine. Having a workout partner is the easiest way to stay committed.
9. Stating the obvious
Take the stairs, park farther from your destination and eat right. The rule is to have anything fresh. Drink a lot of water. You can get dehydrated in any season.
10. You’re no superhuman
We’re all masters of self-diagnosis, with unreasonable faith in the theory of “it will fade away”. Injuries and illnesses need to be checked and treated. Doctors exist for a reason. Sometimes rest is the best cure.

WTM: What treatment would you recommend for the women in Bahrain and why? AM: I always encourage women to look into the WHP (Women’s Health Programme). This concentrates on the female pelvic floor muscles. Ageing is the most common factor that affects this area and with lack of training and exercises, that may lead to muscle loosening or fatigue. Also, the hormonal changes that happen within pregnancy, labour, menstruation or post-menopausal periods reduce muscle flexibility and strength. WTM: What is the goal of this programme? Are there any conditions for joining? AM: A large number of women complain of incontinence, general bladder problems, a prolapsed uterus, decreased endurance during pregnancy, and loose or weakened pelvic floor muscles. The WHP aims at preventing diseases related to the dysfunction of these muscles. We teach women how and when to rest, relax and exercise these muscles, in turn increasing fitness and strength. There is no age limit for taking part in any of the
programmes, including pregnancy fitness, preparation for labour and post-delivery rehabilitation. All you need is to find the one that best suits your medical condition. After an initial evaluation by qualified consultants, a customised treatment plan is developed for each patient. Their progress is then continually monitored. Call 77 060-999.

ahrain is certainly not devoid of fashionable happenings. We’ve seen some great shows from the likes of Noon by Noor and Khaleda Rajab, among others, but I’m sure you’ll agree with me when I say that Bahrain isn’t exactly the fashion hub of the Middle East. Dubai is a more obvious contender for that title. So, last week I headed off to Dubai to check out some fashion parties and runway shows. Here’s my report:

Koton A/W Party
The lovely ladies over at Fifth Ring invited me to the showcase of Koton’s Autumn/Winter collection. It was a delightful evening of cocktails, DJ sets and yummy canapés, in the marvellous setting of Grosvenor House. The best part of the night, though, has to have been the fashion. Koton have been working very hard over the last six months or so, expanding their line to include more in the way of formal wear and plus size garments — catering for a wider audience. My favourite part of the collection has to be their work wear. They have gone for a monochrome theme, with the odd accent of bold red. They have produced a divine red, cropped jacket that I’m definitely going to be snapping up when it hits the shops! The plus size range is also a great addition. Their idea is that plus size clothing usually lacks the same style and definition of main lines. So they have endeavoured to ensure that this 70s inspired range is shapely and on-trend. Their party wear is also fresh and exciting — with a good dose of glitter and sparkle!

Splash
Runway Show Splash is a real Middle Eastern phenomenon. It started as a fairly small venture and has quickly grown to superstardom. The idea has been to create on-trend, haute-couture-inspired clothes, and to sell them at affordable prices, for those of us who can’t dress head-to-toe in Chanel and Gucci on a daily basis. And the outcome has been quite inspiring. True, they did have a hefty deal of financial backing, but happily this hasn’t made them hitch up their prices. The show itself was a high-budget extravaganza. With around a thousand guests filling the Madinat Arena, the buzz among the crowd was quite palpable. Throughout the show they pulled out all the stops, with a live band, pyrotechnics, a plethora of stunning models and much more than the usual 24 looks format. The outfits ranged from punky day time wear, to elegant evening get-ups. There were play suits, full-length gowns, faux-fur stoles, boom boxes and the odd pair of hi-tops.

After-party What was one of the best things about the Splash event? Definitely the afterparty. As the show came to a close, a screen drew up to reveal a pit behind the stage, just large enough to host a spectacular, surprise-filled party for models, musicians and VIPs. There was dancing, rock and roll and even a spot pole-dancing. As I walked around the venue, I came to the conclusion that the coolest thing about the event was the way that everyone was mixing together, sharing the party vibe. I spoke to bloggers and fashionistas, models and musicians, all of whom were hanging out in each other's company. Splash made fashion feel like a real community.

rogressive disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a common form of arthritis that can affect virtually every area of your life, including the type of work you can take on. RA can also interfere with the joys and responsibilities of family life and may even affect the decision to have children. In recent years, however, research has led to a new understanding of this condition. With advancement in treatment strategies and patient education and support programmes, most people with this disease can now lead active and productive lives. It is important to first understand what this condition is 62

What it is
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that causes pain, stiffness, swelling and loss of motion in the joints. This is an autoimmune disease in which, for unknown reasons, a person's immune system attacks his or her own body tissues. In rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system attacks the synovium, the tissue that lines the joints. This causes an inflammation that can eventually lead to the destruction of the
synovium as well as the joint. While RA is often associated with old age, the common age of occurrence is anywhere between 40 and 50 years and can have a much earlier onset. For reasons unknown, the occurrence of rheumatoid arthritis is three times more common in women than men.
Causes
Although there are no established causes for rheumatoid arthritis, its occurrence is commonly linked to virus infection, genetics and a variety of hormonal factors. People who have a family history of this disease are more likely to develop it themselves.
Early Signs
Joint pain is one of the earliest symptoms of RA, as is early morning stiffness that lasts beyond 30 minutes. Small joints, such as wrists and fingers closest to the hand are usually the first to be affected. Joint inflammation could be accompanied by fatigue and an occasional fever. The swelling can occur in multiple joints and is usually symmetrical, that is, it affects joints on both sides of the body. The symptoms can worsen in winter or in an air-conditioned environment. RA affects different people differently and symptoms can range from mild to severe. In most cases the disease is chronic, meaning it lasts a long time — often a lifetime. For many people, periods of relatively mild disease activity can be punctuated by flare ups, or times of heightened disease activity, while for others, symptoms are constant. Women should be especially careful since they’re three times more likely to develop this disease and the symptoms are usually suppressed during pregnancy.
What Next?
Early intervention is crucial in the treatment of this condition. Often, people ignore the early RA symptoms, believing their joint stiffness is the normal consequence of aging. However, if left to progress, the symptoms can worsen. The pain can become more intense as the synovium thickens. Inflamed cells produce a particular type of enzyme that eats into bone and cartilage. This can cause even more pain and can also cause the bone to deform. In advanced stages, the joints lose shape as tendons slip out of place. Fingers or toes can curl, the hip gets out of alignment or the shoulders slump. Additional complications may develop, affecting the heart, lungs, eyes and may include skin rashes and hair loss as well.
Treatment
Even though it’s not completely curable, RA is a treatable disease that can be kept under check with early intervention. Physicians primarily administer disease-modifying medicines, commonly known as DMARDs (disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs), for the three to six months, coupled with anti-inflammation drugs and steroids. However, DMARDs work best when administered at the earliest possible stage — within the first three months of diagnosis — so it is important to find a specialist as early as possible to manage your condition. “It’s important that a diagnosis is made at the earliest and a patient comes for investigation on experiencing any symptoms. If treatment is started early, many complications can be arrested,” notes Dr Sumod Sukumaran, Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon attached to KIMS Bahrain Medical Centre. When complications have developed as a result of neglect or the condition is not responding to treatment, surgery can be performed to remove the damaged covering of the joint. In case there’s deformity in the joints, corrective surgery including complete joint replacement can also be carried out.
Managing Rheumatoid Arthritis
If you have been diagnosed with RA, take heart — it’s not the end of the road for you. “The treatment available for RA is excellent and the condition can be as good as cured with proper and early intervention,” observes Dr Sumod. Since RA is a lifelong disease, regular follow ups with the physician, life-long monitoring and treatment is crucial to keep the condition under check. It’s important to catch any changes early. Your visits to the specialist can involve frequent examination of your joints to look for swelling, changes in strength or changes in range of motion, while periodic X-rays and blood tests can follow active inflammation or joint changes. Certain lifestyle changes can also help alleviate suffering in this condition. “Try to keep the body warm as far as possible and take a warm shower before going to bed at night and in the morning. Women should take regular exercise to relieve stiffness in their joints. They will also benefit if they keep their body weight in check as overweight people put more strain on their weight bearing joints,” advises Dr Sumod. Regular, gentle exercise is very beneficial in reducing overall pain from RA, while also strengthening the muscles around a joint and improving its stability. It also improves your functional ability and lets you accomplish more for yourself. Low impact exercise such as walking, cycling and swimming, particularly in heated pools, is recommended. Women with RA often fall victim to depression. Finding other patients and building a support system or joining an online community can be really worthwhile, since no one understands RA as much as someone who’s already been there. woman this month | November 2011 |

However, by boosting your brain’s power constantly during your life, you will undoubtedly prevent these issues and improve your quality of living as a whole.

It also helps bring about a healthy balance in the brain and melts away stress and anxiety whilst heightening energy levels. Jokes are the perfect way to both laugh and test your brain, as the creation of jokes inside your head requires a certain level of thinking and consideration with regards to your audience
and surroundings. For this reason, it is good work for your brain if you spend time with children as they are constant bundles of laughter and you often need to think on your feet.
Relax
When stressed, concentration levels are poorer, as are reasoning, learning and creativity skills. You will find it extremely hard to retain or even digest any new information as your mind will be entirely fixated on whatever it is you are anxious about. Meditation is a very simple and productive way to help manage stress and there are plenty of different styles so you are sure to find one that suits you. The act of meditation increases the thickness of the cerebral cortex and encourages more connections between brain cells — ultimately boosting both mental and memory skills.

Itch Control Marafie Skin Clinic
With the cooling of the weather comes a problem that every woman faces — dry skin! WTM talks to expert Dr. Hannan Marafie to answer all your “winter itch” questions.
A
lthough it is a common and widely suffered problem throughout the year, dry skin worsens during the winter months as the humidity drops. Normally, this means that fine lines in the skin become more visible, the skin feels rough and appears dull and flaky and, in serious cases, fish net like cracks can occur. Most commonly found on the arms, legs and even the trunk of the body, dry skin also brings with it a whole lot of itching. “Dry skin and scratching may result in dermatitis, when the skin becomes red in addition to dry and scaly. Round, scaly, itchy, red patches scattered over the legs, arms and trunk (nummular eczema) may also appear,” says Dr. Hanann Marafie. The condition is caused by a lack of water and natural skin oils in the outermost layer of the skin. Too much soapy water, exposure to harsh chemicals, the normal ageing process and certain types of skin diseases are some of the causes of decreased amounts of protective skin oils. A good routine “It is natural to think that applying water alone to dry skin would help control the problem. However, water, especially hot water, can actually worsen the problem of dry skin by removing the normal, protective skin oils”. Management of the skin is greatly affected by proper bathing 70

techniques and liberal use of the most effective moisturisers. You should take a short bath or shower — no more than 10 minutes — once or twice in a 24 hour period. After bathing or showering, quickly and gently pat the skin partially dry with a towel — no rubbing! Within three minutes of getting out of the water, apply a moisturiser and treat any red dermatitis patches with a medicated cream or ointment for a five to 15 day course. Make your choice Ointment moisturisers have the greatest ability to trap moisture in the skin, but they have the greasy consistency and feel of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly. Oil moisturisers are less greasy but still effective. Examples of oils that can be applied directly to the skin include baby oil, mineral oil, vegetable oil, and bath oil. Cream moisturisers are usually white and disappear when rubbed into the skin without leaving a greasy feel. As a result they tend to be more popular than ointments. Lotion moisturisers are suspensions of oily chemicals in alcohol and water. Lotion moisturisers are generally the least greasy and the most pleasant to use and are therefore quite popular. We all know that young people copy the role models they have around them. Younger children need to be surrounded by good examples and a healthy lifestyle and eating pattern is one of the best examples that you, as a parent, can set.

ahrain has a vast array of activities for young people to enjoy, either with you as a parent, or with their peers. Letitia Booysen, a level three gymnastics club coach, who has lived in Bahrain for the past five years, explains some of the ways we can encourage children to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Letitia is very involved with sport development on the island and manages Monkeynastix. She enjoys teaching so many different age groups and nationalities and explains “I’ve come to realise that ‘competitive sport’ is not necessarily something all children will be drawn to, so that’s why I purchased the Master Franchise Licence for Monkeynastix Bahrain. I’ve been offering classes, birthday party activities and holiday camps with Monkeynastix and it’s proven very popular with schools and the youngsters”.
Diet
All too often, parents give in to their children’s tantrums. They will swap a healthy plate of food with a packet of crisps or ready meal, just to avoid an argument. But, of course, if children always get their own way once or twice, this will encourage them to always demand a fight before eating healthy food. A healthy diet starts at home and is greatly supported by a parent demonstrating their own love of fruit, vegetables and balanced meals. Letitia comments: “I love the saying ‘Children don’t do what their parents tell them to do; they do what their parents do’. This is true in so many ways. Parents need to be creative. A great way to introduce new and healthy foods is to let your child explore the tastes and textures. Hand them a chopping board and a plastic knife and in no time your child will try to eat the food!”. It’s been said before, but breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It ensures a steady stream of energy for your child. Breakfast should be something healthy, protein if possible, as this meal kick starts your child’s metabolism. Offer your child something that will add to their vitamin and fibre intake and that won’t leave them hungry and in need of snacks.
Water
Water is not generally a child’s first choice of drink and yet, living in Bahrain, hydration is so important, not just because dehydration makes you tired and less likely to want to join in physical activities, but also because water is necessary for a healthy mind, so it is needed for learning to take place. Letitia suggests that, “instead of forcing your child to drink water, explain to them why it is so important. Our bodies are like a well oiled machine. Without fuel — healthy food and water — this machine is going to break down, just like a car without petrol. What use will we be then if we cannot function normally?”. Children should have at least six glasses of water a day and very active children may easily require up to eight. Offer water initially and use juices as a treat because even natural fruit juice contains a great deal of sugar, which doesn’t help your child’s growing teeth. “If you struggle to get your child to drink water”, Letitia explains, “I’m a big fan of Rooibos tea, which is a South African product full of antioxidants. When I was younger,
this encouraged us to drink. We used add a little bit of honey and lemon to add to the flavour. I could sip on that all day long, even during my gruelling gymnastics sessions”. Children are often fond of cucumber and this is another flavour that can easily make a boring glass of water more exciting.
Exercise
Children are normally quite active. When they enjoy playing outside or in the school playground, they not only mix with other children, use up their energy and develop their co-ordination; they also strengthen their muscles and bone density. and imagination and urge them to learn and experience more about what their bodies can do. A thirty minute session is more than enough, and that’s why Monkeynastix developed their programmes based on the average attention span of a child at different ages” Letitia adds. “Children from the age of six to eight years can increase their exercising activities to twice or in some cases three times a week for 35 to 40min per session and children older than eight years usually know what activities they prefer. Your child’s PE teacher can also assess them to see which activities they excel in. Some children might have better core strength compared to others. Or some might have better eye to hand coordination and do extremely well in ball sports”.
Choosing a class
Before enrolling a child in any programme or class, make sure you see the facilities first and meet the instructor. “If the instructor is not fully qualified in that field, walk out the door immediately. From a sport instructor’s point of view, I am fully aware of the fact that my wrong doing or instructions could potentially cause permanent damage to a child’s health or ability to live a normal life. This goes for self-esteem issues as well. The risk factor in high performance sports like gymnastics or kick boxing is exceptionally high compared to others, but as long as parents are aware of the dangers involved and their child is good at the sport, I don’t see why you should not pursue it. In these instances, you need to make sure that the instructor is fully qualified in first aid and check that emergency procedures will be followed, just in case. A child could just as easily get injured in the school playground or on the football field; my main concern is that, in case of an emergency, the coach or instructor will be able to take necessary action”, Letitia points out. 74

Fun!
Fun is probably the main motivator for most children and most adults too! If laughter is part of the session, who wouldn’t want to take part? Choose fun and stimulating activities where your child will constantly be learning new techniques and movements and be able to move up the skill ladder. “Group classes or levels of ability should be organised appropriately, as you can easily de-motivate a child if they compete against a group of children that are on a higher level compared to them”, Letitia explains. “Movement is as natural to children as breathing and almost as essential! “The Monkeynastix programme provides children with a myriad of different movement experiences and different contexts in order for them to discover the unlimited possibilities that exist in physical activity. Research shows that today’s children are not moving nearly as much as we did when we were children. Modern living and easy access to fast food, television and computers all contribute to the fact that children are more passive, generally overweight and in many cases obese”. It is, therefore, important for families to take time to do more activities together, so that exercising and caring about health become an accepted family value. It could be a game of tennis or ball games in the pool, but make it fun to ensure that your child wants more. Your child only has one body for life so make sure they know how to look after it! Childhood plumpness and obesity is a rising problem and something that we really need to bring under control.
T
here has been a significant rise in the levels of overweight children globally. The four per cent of children between six and 12 years that was overweight has grown to 13 per cent in the last 35 years and among 12 to 19 year olds, the figure has risen from five to 14 per cent, which is really quite shocking. Researchers have found a relationship between physical fitness and the brain in children of nine and ten years old. By way of elaboration: those who are more fit tend to have a bigger hippocampus, which means they perform better in memory tests, spatial reasoning and other cognitive tasks. So, if you don’t want to feel you are hampering your child’s mental development, it would be a good idea to ensure their physical fitness! When researchers analysed the data from a selection of MRI scans, they established that physically fit children had a hippocampal volume which was up to 12 per cent bigger, relative to the total brain size, than that of their out of shape peers. The children who were in better physical condition also did better on tests of relational memory — the ability to remember and integrate various types of information — than their less-fit peers. The brain is made up of cells, just like the rest of the body. Neurons are specialised cells that enable us to think and behave, but just like other cells, they need

nutrients and fuel to function. Several studies have shown that good nutrition is crucial to brain development. Good nutrition is critical in utero (as the brain is developing in the womb) and post-partum (just after the baby has been born). In addition to good nutrients, the brain requires oxygen to function. The better a child's circulatory system, the better the brain can perform. A recent study by T.M. Hung demonstrated that the brains of five year old children who participate in habitual physical activity generate faster electrical responses than those of sedentary children. Exercise increases the flow of blood to the brain. The blood delivers oxygen and glucose, which the brain needs for heightened alertness and mental focus. Because of this, exercise makes it easier for children to learn. According to researchers, exercise builds new neurons in a brain region called the dentate gyrus, which is linked with memory and memory loss. Exercise also stimulates nerve growth factors. Those who exercise regularly have superior short-term memory, display faster reaction time, and can display a higher level of creativity. Exercise builds up the body’s level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor or BDNF. BDNF causes the neurons to branch out, join together and communicate with each other in new ways, which leads to your children’s openness to learning and more aptitude for knowledge.
• Childhood Obesity is likely to lead to adult obesity: The likelihood of becoming an obese adult, if obese at age six is 50 per cent. The odds of becoming an obese adult, if obese at age 13 is 70 to 80 per cent • The American Heart Association recommends: All children age two and over should partake in at least 60 minutes of pleasurable, moderate-intensity physical activity every day, which are developmentally appropriate and diverse. • If your children do not have a full 60-minute activity break each day, try to provide at least two 30 minute periods or four 15 minute periods in which they can engage in vigorous activities appropriate to their age, gender and stage of physical and emotional development. • Children who achieve better on standardised tests have more favourable body composition and lipid profile.

n 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox — a combination of Victoria, his mother, and inox, meaning stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing and, famously, Swiss army knives. The original product dates back to 1897, when he patented the sports knife he supplied to the Swiss army. Together with Victorinox, the outlet held a photo challenge this year. To enter the competition, all you needed to do was send a photograph which best displayed how the branded penknives have been a companion for life. The competition had overwhelming success and the entries flooded in. Clearly, Victorinox has found a special place in Bahrain. Due to the response to last year’s competition, they have decided to reintroduce it in 2012. James Claire As this is the fitness issue, we’ve decided to give you a dose of healthy food. As we all know, diet is key to achieving the body of your dreams.
A
s another year continues to slip through our lives at an unbeatable pace, it seems like ages ago that we thought about New Year’s resolutions and all the promises we planned to keep. For those yet to start the health regime that they set out at the year’s beginning, then there is still time left in which to begin, and this month’s recipes reflect this. It is never too early, nor too late to begin looking after your body. I have included, or at least tried to consider such thinks as low fat, low cal and low carb ingredients for this month’s recipes. Chocolate chip cookies may seem a strange addition to this, but as you will see, the recipe is as healthy as it can be for a dessert item. Use them as an energy burst throughout the day rather than a snacking item in front of the television at night. Even something as delicious as a chocolate chip cookie doesn’t need to be an attack on your body. If we substitute the heavier ingredients for lighter, less fat-concentrated items, we can still enjoy the odd treat from time to time. Some of you may be surprised that Bircher Muesli is the pre-cursor to the origins of modern muesli and other than having been my favourite food since the early 80’s, it was invented by Dr Bircher-Benner for his health spa and is described as the world’s most perfect food. In a singular meal it contains all that one requires to sustain our bodies throughout the day. Healthy, delicious and extremely addictive. Enjoy the food, don’t forget that exercise is also essential to a healthy lifestyle, and enjoy good health for what remains of the year 2011. Bircher Muesli
50g white oats (rolled) 250ml milk 1 apple 1 banana 100ml whipping cream, lightly whipped 30g whole almonds 30g whole hazelnuts Pinch cinnamon 40g honey In a medium sized mixing bowl, place the white oats and soak in the milk. Allow to sit in the refrigerator for one hour prior to using. l Grate the apple finely. Chop the banana into small slices. Take the almonds and hazelnuts and roast them in a hot oven for approximately 30 minutes to colour them. l Upon removing them from the oven and cooling, roll the hazelnuts between two tea towels to rub off the papery skins. Much of the remaining skins can be removed by rubbing each nut between your fingers. Chop the hazelnuts and almonds roughly into smaller pieces, but not too small. l Lightly whip the cream to aerate it, but don’t whip it too thickly. A soft peak when whipping rather than a stiff one is better. l Remove the soaked oats from the refrigerator. Add the honey and stir to dissolve. Add the cinnamon and stir it in. Add the grated apple, the chopped banana, the chopped almonds and hazelnuts and finally fold through the cream. Serve cold, immediately, with a selection of fresh berries . l
Healthy Choc Chip Cookies 120g Tahini paste 60g margarine, softened 140g caster sugar 140g brown sugar 1 whole egg 1 egg white 1 Tbsp vanilla extract 120g white oats (rolled)
60g whole-wheat flour 70g plain flour 2g ground cinnamon 2g bi-carbonate soda Pinch salt 200g chocolate chips 80g chopped walnuts
Preheat oven to 175 degrees Celsius. Line a baking tray with parchment paper. l In a large mixing bowl place the white oats, whole-wheat flour, plain flour, cinnamon, bi-carbonate soda and salt. l In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat together the tahini paste and the margarine with both the granulated and brown sugars. Beat in the egg, mixing completely. Scrape the mixture down and add the egg white, then vanilla. Stir in the oat mixture with a wooden spoon l
until just moistened. Stir in chocolate chips and walnuts. Take a small amount of the mixture, roll it into balls about the size of a walnut and place them on a prepared baking sheet. Using the palm of your hands flatten each ball slightly. l Bake the cookies for approximately 12 minutes. Cool them on the tray before removing to serve or to eat. l
Caesar Salad 2 Romaine lettuce 60g walnuts, roasted 60g ahini 2 Tbsp anchovies, drained, rinsed and chopped 4 garlic cloves, chopped finely
3 Tbspn lemon juice 2 Tbspn balsamic vinegar 2 Tbspn olive oil salt black pepper
Rinse the lettuce. Remove and discard the outer leaves. Cut the remaining lettuce into small pieces. l Into the bowl of a kitchen blender place the tahini, anchovies, finely chopped garlic, lemon juice and the balsamic vinegar. Blend the ingredients together for approximately two minutes. l As the mixture blends, slowly pour in the olive oil, little by little, and allow the mixture to continue mixing. l Remove the dressing from the blender and salt and pepper to taste. l Toss the dressing and the lettuce in a large salad bowl and sprinkle with the well roasted walnuts and serve l
Tuna Puttanesca with Fettuccine 360g fresh pasta (fettucine) 40g olive oil 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced ½ green capsicum, finely chopped 10g capers, drained 60g black olives, roughly chopped 900g tinned chopped tomatoes
6 basil leaves 150g tinned tuna, (still with oil crumbled salt freshly ground pepper additional basil for garnish
Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil. Add the pasta and cook until al dente. l In a large frying pan, heat the oil gently. Add the garlic and cook until it is lightly golden brown. Add the capsicum, capers and olives and cook for a further two minutes. l Remove the tomatoes from the can and ensure they are uniformly chopped. Add to the frying pan the capsicum and garlic mixture and cook out some of the additional tomato juice. As the mixture starts to look drier, tear up the basil leaves by hand over the sauce. Add the tuna with its oil. Salt and pepper the mixture to your own taste at this stage. l Drain the pasta and place it into a serving dish. Pour the cooked sauce over the pasta and tear up some remaining basil leaves over the top before serving. l

The Great Barrier Reef marine park, consisting of hundreds of impressive uninhabited islands with secluded beaches, makes for a unique holiday where you can explore the reef area with snorkelling or diving equipment. Best for: The curious kind. The lack of rain and the warm weather make November the optimum time to witness a true wonder of the natural world. A little towards the south, you will find Fraser Island. Although the reef does not extend to this island, it is a beautiful mix of sand, sea, forests and lakes. Listed on the World Heritage List, it would be a shame to miss it.

Fairy Tales Hard-headed Woman
R
apunzel, Snow White and Cinderella are all girls who, up until my mid twenties, I adored. I learnt about them at school, watched their movies, read the books and decided to follow their heroic horse, knight in shining armour, white picket fence and happily-everafter lifestyle. Somewhere between my mid-twenties and now I became disillusioned by the cold hard reality of every day life. I spoke to a few of my fellow women in the past month to discuss this issue and we all agreed — the values and expectations espoused and promoted by Disney and other fairy tales seem so unrealistic, so romanticised. We’ve all, at one stage or another, been led to believe that Prince Charming will eventually climb the proverbial ladder, to wherever we are, even if it is holed up in our stuffy corporate tower, to pluck us from among many eligible women and lead us to a life of married bliss. We were told we’d all have a brood of children, find the key to unlock a vault of endless money and that our normal, middle class lives would be the stuff of, well, fairy tales! Now, in my thirties, I find myself among a growing population of disenchanted princesses. A woman’s life is fraught with tough choices and hard challenges. Our bodies change, not just at puberty, but continuously through our twenties and thirties, through child birth and then during menopause. We have to consider the career-family balance, because as we all know, still far too often the burden of childcare falls on us and us alone. As I entered the work force there was a major push for women to beat men at their own game and force their way up the corporate ladder. Unfortunately this encouraged a type of male-imitative behaviour that didn’t always do these women any favours and often forced them to forgo having children. Many of us will never marry, some of us will not bear children, a handful of us will marry and divorce and a few of those will continue the cycle several times over. Only a very small percentage of my friends will ever really marry into or discover for themselves the “land of make believe” and live the life we were all told we’d inherit. But I have learned to think about life in a different way. Loosening my grip on the fairy-tale ideal hasn’t been an entirely negative process. Do I regret my decisions to fight for my career and to give it everything I have to become a success? Definitely not! It has filled me with selfconfidence and personal pride. I am independent and can sleep at night knowing that the roof over my head is paid for. I owe nothing to anyone for where I am and that is a truly satisfying feeling. Of course, there are days when I see children and I wish they could run for me, shouting “mummy” and embracing my legs with the hug of love that I see other parents receiving. I even wonder sometimes if I will grow old alone! Time is ticking after all. We can deny certain things about being a woman, but the biological clock continues to tick loudly over everything. As far as baby making is concerned, we have a use by date. If I have not found Prince Charming soon, I feel it would have to be a true prince indeed who would pluck me from the tower, over forty or fifty. And at that age, I doubt children will still be an option. I wish that we could teach our sisters, daughters, nieces and all young girls we come into contact with, the reality of life, rather than filling their young heads with fairy tales. — hopes and dreams are what make the world go round! But there are some dreams we can never achieve, and this is depressing. There are others, though, that are both exciting and accessible, if we work hard and grab the right opportunities. We shouldn’t let ourselves become saddened by goals that are unrealistic and unhealthy. We should instead concentrate on the many great things that the real worldcan offer us! Happiness, self-respect, self-confidence can all be the key to a successful life. As for me, I do not regret my choices. I have myself and the love of my friends. We are a tight cougar pack and we will be our own family as we age together. Besides, there’s still plenty of time to kiss a few more frogs to see if my own version of the fabled Prince Charming materialises. The best things are often a complete surprise!
