EDITOR’S NOTE W

ow, it's been a busy month at the WTM office with three big features to put to bed. As always, October means our thoughts turn to the new season's fashion trends. OK, in our climate, we might not get much chance to wear boots and coats, but funky jackets and sweaters never go amiss and, of course, we love scrutinising the catwalks to see what craziness the designers have come up with. Fernanda has put together loads of great trends plus tips on how to wear them. So, make sure you check out her pages. October also heralds the regular initiatives and events which raise cash and awareness about breast cancer. In October in Focus, you'll find a round-up of Think Pink events to look out for which will be updated throughout the month at www.womanthismonth. com. We've also spoken to experts in the field about prevention, early detection, dealing with some of the difficult aspects of treatment and more. Plus Shaikha Alanood Al Khalifa outlines her plans to provide cancer sufferers with handmade wigs created from locks donated here in Bahrain. Our third feature this month looks at Women in Finance and we have interviews with Noor Al Saati and Fatema Bastaki, the dynamic duo behind the Imtiaz for Her credit card, and Julia De Souza of AMEX Middle East. There are also words of wisdom from financial expert Pria Masson Tanwar for those looking to get their own financial house in order. Elsewhere, Behnaz reports on the delights of the new ladies' breakfast at Wyndham Garden's Café Mosaic and Apple gives her verdict on her massage at Heavenly Spa by Westin — seems I'm missing a trick here! If you've always fancied a visit to the land down under, and I can highly recommend it, this month's travel pages feature some of Australia's most popular destinations. As always we've got our regular beauty and homes tips and lots more to keep you busy. I'd love to hear what you think of this month's mag, hope you enjoy it.

What’s caught our eye in the news this month

Letters Somebody is finally taking the lead and spreading awareness about the impact our shopping sprees have on our planet! If someone as smart and sophisticated as Lana Furman seems able to hold off mindless purchasing of clothes, then its time for us all to wake up and smell the coffee. We must realise the implications of our massive carbon footprint on Earth and act to control it. Let’s start with re-use, reduce and recycle in our wardrobes, ladies. Naima, Janabiya

I’m pleasantly surprised that Woman This Month has touched upon the topic of labiaplasty and put forth unbiased information on the topic. The article must have given so many readers the idea that there is a way to get the issue fixed without feeling embarrassed about it. Christina, Saar

I quite enjoyed reading your piece on limited edition travel. It reminded me that the world is so vast and beautiful, and that I have to start exploring it now. Everybody gets so caught up with going to Europe and the United States for their holidays, that they completely overlook other delicate and unique ecosystems which one has to be lucky to witness. Anna, Segaya

I’m not cut out to be a blogger myself, but your article ‘Behind the Blog’ gave me some new bloggers to check out and follow. I appreciate it more because they are all inside the GCC, which makes their content that much more relatable. Thanks! Shaima, Zinj

Power Mom Here’s a world leader in the spotlight for all the right reasons. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, 38, is not only the youngest female head of state in the world, she’s also the first woman in nearly 30 years to give birth while holding office. After welcoming her baby girl in June, the prime minister sat down with a popular news channel to talk about her life and career. She said: “My appreciation for parents, mothers and solo mothers, particularly, has increased tenfold.” She returned to work last month after taking six weeks maternity leave. www.today.com

Bee Story Bees are dying at an alarming rate. Amsterdam may have the answer. Alarm bells are sounding globally over the disappearance of bees, but Amsterdam has proved to be a success story. While scientists around the globe have been stressing over the decline of bees and pollinators crucial to the growth of crops, the diversity of wild bee and honeybee species in the Dutch capital has increased by 45 per cent since 2000. This is thanks to Amsterdam creating bee-friendly environments of overgrown, sunburnt patches of shrubs, native plants and flowers outside public areas like train stations. The installation of ‘insect hotels’ and a ban on the use of chemical pesticides on public land also appear to have played a role. ww.independent.co.uk

October in Focus Yalla Banat

We’re seriously excited about the big female focused event happening at the Bahrain International Circuit this Friday, October 19. The Yalla Banat event is a forum created for women across the region aiming to inspire the next generation of women achievers, and to be the biggest festival for women in the Middle East. One of those taking part will be Aseel Al Hamad – the first female member of the Saudi Arabian Motor Federation, which is part of the International Automobile Federation.

There’ll also be a female parade of 250 cars that will be customised by each driver, a female-led motor show featuring women from all over the GCC, round-table discussions with participants sharing their ‘road to success’, and a range of international speakers. The female entrepreneur market and engagement zone will be mainly driven by youth incorporating start-up ideas to ignite that spirit within the event. Find out more at yallabanat.me

Think Pink Events October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month which means lots of events in support of Think Pink. • October 5 Annual Pink Motorcycle Ride with Harley Owners Group. • October 6 Pink Pony Day at MHR Stables, Muharraq. • October 8 Celebrate Pink Dinner at The Capital Club.

Festivals Galore

We’re spoiled for choice this month with a whole bunch of festivals letting us know summer is well and truly over and the lovely cool winter months are about to descend. We start off with Bahrain International Music Festival, which runs from October 18 to 26 and brings in such icons of Arabic music as Natacha Atlas, who’s at the Cultural Hall on the 23rd. TribFest returns to Bahrain Rugby Football Club on October 19, featuring more than 20 big-name tribute acts flown out from the UK for a great day of fun, with open air picnics and drinks and plenty of sing-along, feel-good tunes. Then on October 26, it’s the second edition of Bahrain Jazz Festival at the Royal Golf Club where you can see the Swing Ninjas, The Kiffness, Ala Ghawas, Avalon Jazz Band, star guitarist Ana Popovic, Cut Capers, Likwid, Havaneros and Indian Ocean.

Poppin’ Again

Head down to The Courtyard in Seef on October 27 for the latest edition of Bahrain Pop Up Market. There’ll be fancy coffee, artisan prayer mats, organic skincare products and lots of other stuff you won’t find on the high street. With the festive season just around the corner, it’s the ideal place to find a few early presents.

LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE GIRLS October 11 is International Day of the Girl Child. But what does that actually mean? It’s a UN initiative which has run every year since 2012 and, this year, the theme is ‘With Her: A Skilled GirlForce’. According to the UN, today's generation of girls is preparing to enter a world of work that is being transformed by innovation and automation. Educated and skilled workers are in great demand, but roughly a quarter of young people – most of them female – are currently neither employed nor in education or training. Of the one billion young people – including 600 million adolescent girls – that will enter the workforce in the next decade, more than 90 per cent of those living in developing countries will work in the informal sector, where low or no pay, abuse and exploitation are common. Under the theme, With Her: A Skilled GirlForce, International Day of the Girl Child will mark the beginning of a year-long effort to bring together partners and stakeholders to advocate for, and draw attention and investments to the most pressing needs and opportunities for girls to attain skills for employability. To my mind, the UN has a lot of slightly bonkers special days – such as Television Day! – but this is one I’m fully in favour of.

BLIND LEADING THE WAY Visually impaired women in India are learning to use their heightened sense of touch to become medical tactile examiners (MTE), helping other women at risk of breast cancer. Once trained, an MTE can cover the whole breast area centimetre by centimetre in 35 to 45 minutes and can detect lumps as small as 0.5cm. Braille markings are used to indicate the exact spot for attention by a doctor. It’s not an alternative to a mammogram but can be really useful in helping with early diagnosis, particularly for women who might otherwise not get checked. I’d love to see this programme spread worldwide.

AN EXCITING NEW NEIGHBOUR I must admit I’m not always a fan of the seemingly endless proliferation of new hotels popping up across the island and can often be heard grumbling “Who’s going to stay in them?” However, there’s one new arrival I’m very happy to welcome to our shores, having visited its sister property in Beirut. The Merchant House, part of the Campbell Gray Hotels, is due to open in the heart of Manama next to Bab Al Bahrain and the souq, which is an area undergoing a vast regeneration project. An all-suite hotel, it will have open-plan kitchen, dining areas and sitting rooms. And, if its sister property is anything to go by, we’re in for a treat.

CROSSING THE LINE There’s been anger in the UK after a male Credit Suisse director, Philip Bunce, appeared on the Champions of Women in Business list of top 100 female executives. Mr Bunce is a man but claims to be ‘gender fluid’ and non-binary – neither male nor female. But, and it’s a big but, he is not female, does not identify as female, despite wearing women’s clothing approximately 50 per cent of the time, and made his way successfully in the business world as a man before starting to cross-dress openly about four years ago. Seems to me there were plenty of women, either born female or transitioned, who could have been lauded instead. This looks a bit like political correctness taken to the needless nth degree.

Word of the Month Bibble – this sounds like something that might be quite fun but is actually a description of people who eat or drink noisily – a pet hate! www.womanthismonth.com

AUTUMN

WINTER 2018-2019

Stella McCartney

Report by Fernanda Langhammer

Richard Quinn

Gucci

This season you will see a lot of bright colours in contrast to the usual grey, black, navy and white. Also, a feeling of extreme confidence is in the air, something that is rare to see during the colder months. Lots of cloudy days are not actually applicable in this part of the globe, so I have a gut feeling (more as a personal interpretation) that designers might have thought of us shining souls that live in the Middle East, to create designs that represent sunny days in winter times. How much do we all love winter in Bahrain? Flashing colours such as hot pink and orange are the shades to look for, next to the falling leaves palette. In the printing field, search for animal patterns (no real fur, please!), checks, argyle and whimsical scarf motifs. In terms of style, let the hippie and the cowgirl in you conquer your wardrobe for a relaxed and stylish winter.

Animal print is a popular choice in the pattern universe. It represents luxury and boldness. The favourite picks this season are zebra and leopard. Painted in their original shades, black and white and brown and black or in tones of red, green and yellow. Designers covered evening gowns and tailored suits with the motif to make you glamorous. Should you go for top-to-toe or one eye-catching piece? The choice is yours! Both options are spot on.

PLATINUM FEVER The metallic finish has been a go-to for many brands. What started as a shining element in the spring collections has materialised into whole looks and signature pieces. It’s a great choice for futuristic designs and an interesting pick to pair with jeans and everyday garments. Stand out with mirror-like attire or choose reflective to cover your accessories. Shiny boots anyone?

Brands to look for: Dolce & Gabbana, Victoria Beckham, Givenchy, Calvin Klein, Tom Ford and Max Mara. How to wear: You can always take a trend and wear it in its boldness state. In this case, go for long dresses or jumpsuits in a flexible fabric to grab all the attention and flaunt some serious head-turning power. Checks are never out of fashion when it comes to cold season creations; in fact, their appearance on the catwalks is quite predictable. However, this year, unlike in the past where winter has meant greyish tones, designers have decided to go a bit brighter, so the plaids are more colourful than ever. To complete the inspiration, they are colour-blocked and best paired with other prints such as florals and animal motifs. Go bold or go home is the motto!

Patchwork, frills, crochet, tribal designs, an array of patterns and textures juxtaposed create the mood of this trend. Folk inspiration is about fashion freedom where the rules are out of the picture and wearing clothes full of personality enters the scene. Prairie dresses, ponchos, knitted bags and embroidered tops play a main role in your wardrobe this season. Let the gypsy in you run free!

How to wear: The luxe nomad look is not an ordinary one; it is quite complex in its essence and one single piece can be enough to express the style. If you go for it, make sure you wear solid flat shoes or chunky heels to finalise the look. Avoid espadrilles, flip-flops and delicate footwear. Contrast works at its best here.

Every new season, there is a buzz around the colours to look out for and, this time, hot pink is one of them. The vibrant shade represents a woman who’s not afraid to show off her personality. The spirited tone is a great option to add an eye-catching element to your wardrobe. It goes beautifully with the different shades of grey, from dove to charcoal, caramel and white. Nature itself is the ideal inspiration to understand which colours are best worn together. In summer, bright yellow, sand, white and blue are beach tones that create a harmonious composition. This is technically an autumn colour; however, its presence in the autumn and winter 2018-2019 fashion shows was so extensive and remarkable that it deserved an entire trend to itself. Designers not only paired it with obvious shades, but with all the colours in the spectrum. Its versatility is so wide that most brands created looks using it as the only hue in different tones. Burberry Goes Fur-Free

Having faced a massive backlash on the announcement that it had burnt almost BD15 million worth of old stock, British brand Burberry has vowed to end the decidedly eco-unfriendly practice, which is pretty common throughout the fashion industry. And going a step further to get back into the green generation’s good books, the brand has also promised to dump real fur from its future collections, following in the footsteps of other fashion biggies such as Stella McCartney and Gucci. See www.womanthismonth.com for a comprehensive list of fur-free brands.

Modest fashion e-commerce platform Modanisa.com is taking part in Contemporary Muslim Fashions, an important new exhibition showcasing the diverse nature of Muslim dress codes worldwide. Taking place at the de Young Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the exhibition puts the spotlight on modesty. Modanisa was part of the opening event’s catwalk show and provided two outfits for display. CEO Kerim Ture said: “We are proud to feature in such a pioneering exhibition. From the preview photos it’s clear the de Young museum has curated an exciting collection, which will be vital viewing for anyone curious about the vibrant, diverse and rapidly growing world of modest fashion.”

Michael Kors Buys Versace

American brand Michael Kors is in the process of buying the iconic Italian fashion house, adding to a stable which now also includes Jimmy Choo. The news was greeted with horror among some fashion snobs who fear Kors, which is rebranding under the name Capri Holdings. However, Donatella Versace will remain as creative director and told businessoffashion.com: “This is a very exciting moment for Versace,” adding that her brother Santo and daughter Allegra's stake in Capri "demonstrates our belief in the long-term success of Versace and commitment to this new global fashion luxury group". The acquisition is expected to be completed in 2019.

fashion illustration and skills such as silk printing and painting. I had a big exhibition with my students last year and it was a huge success. So I thought I had better register Wild About Art as a business and it has grown from there.”

As well as teaching others, she is a prolific artist herself. She says: “I always wanted to do art, something I was interested in, but due to family pressure I never got a proper art education. When we were first married, I concentrated on being a wife for the first five or six years and then went into fashion. “When we went to Saudi, I started teaching and that’s where the inspiration for my own works has come from because I am constantly studying and learning about new techniques and other artists — knowledge that I pass on to my students. “Inspiration also comes from my own moods and from my family. I have done a whole series of paintings which I consider show my life from childhood to middle age.” Drawing on her faith, and in a complete departure from her usual style, she created a stunning, almost abstract image of the Hajj in Mecca which is entered into the Global Art Award in Dubai. She explains: “I had previously been involved in Art Dubai, doing live painting sessions, which was quite nerve-wracking. From there I was given the contacts for the Global Art Award but I didn’t really expect my first attempt to be chosen as an entrant. “The Hajj picture took only a few hours, because I was feeling inspired – sometimes pieces can take days because I am painting in layers and letting each dry before progressing

This one was completed very quickly — and I actually have another, in the same series, in progress.” Voting for the award begins by public participation, on the Global Art Award, website then the final winner will be chosen from the shortlist by a panel of experts. However, though Sana is very happy to be considered, she says: “My main focus is on art education. When I participated in my first exhibition and awards, I had no training in art or even how to write an artist’s statement [which accompanies the painting]. After that I started teaching my students about presenting their works, so they won’t feel the confusion I did. I had some students participate in this year’s Nakhool Tent and that was a great feeling.” www.womanthismonth.com

A SUITABLE JOB FOR A WOMAN

For a long time, the financial industry was a traditional bastion of male dominance. But, these days, that’s no longer the case. More and more women are choosing to pursue careers in banking and other areas of the financial sector. Websites such as www.womensworldbanking.org a global non-profit devoted to giving more low-income women access to the financial tools and resources they require to build security and prosperity, are empowering women as customers. And lists, such as American Banker’s Women to Watch (check out Mary Mack), are illustrating just how far women have come in a few short years. Here in the Middle East, and particularly in Bahrain, the financial sector has very definitely woken up to the positive aspects of promoting women in the workplace. Statistics show improved productivity and positivity through enhanced communication and networking skills and financial employers are keen to take advantage with programmes aimed at promoting women’s development. Over the following pages we highlight some of those programmes and also chat to women who are leading the way in the financial workplace. And, for those looking to get to grips with their own finances, Pria Masson gives her monthly dose of financial wisdom.

T

hey are young, enthusiastic, and make a great professional pairing. Noor Al Saati and Fatema Bastaki joined heads at Bahrain Credit to create Imtiaz for Her - a credit card specially designed for women.

A DYNAMIC DUO Noor Al Saati and Fatema Bastaki, the ladies behind Bahrain’s first women’s-only credit card share a tête-à-tête with Behnaz Sanjana.

Noor has a degree in business informatics, and has been with Bahrain Credit ever since she graduated in 2007. Banking and finance graduate Fatema has been with the company since 2013 after a stint in media and public relations. “Bahrain Credit is my second home,” says Noor. “I started in the contact centre department as a loan representative.” Fatema came on board to kick-start the firm’s public relations department. “This job was a big career change,” she says. “It has since developed my organizational skills and added solid weightage to my professional progress.” The two are currently co-brand managers for Imtiaz For Her, the only ladies credit card in the Kingdom, powered by Mastercard. Noor says: “I am proud to be working on this product since day one, putting ideas into actions, turning them into reality.” Fatema adds: “The card is developed by women for women. Imtiaz for Her is more than a project to me; it is a lifestyle tool that I love sharing with other women.” Months of detailed analysis was done to comprehend families’ spending decisions, and the woman’s say in then. Further scrutiny of the Bahraini workforce structure identified women as significant contributors to the nation’s economy. Noor explains that the look and feel of the card and its elegant, ladylike packaging reflects the card holder’s personality, her pride and power. “It is a carefully developed value proposition featuring a wide range of merchants who specifically provide womenand family-related services and products. It offers better choices,

additional discounts and rewards.” Fatema continues: “Imtiaz for Her stands for ambitious women, what they believe in and for women’s empowerment. It’s a game changer within the female community. It’s our way of rewarding women in the country for their significant role in society,” she says. It’s clear that merchants and customers have received this financial instrument well in its first year. Fatema and Noor are proud of the positive feedback received from stakeholders and delighted by the fact that Imtiaz for Her is a key player in empowering women. When asked how it has been working together, both ladies have a glowing response. “Never underestimate the power of women working and connecting with each other. It is wonderful to work closely with a like-minded, successful woman, like Noor, who is also a strong and inspiring mother,” Fatema says. “It’s not about gender, but of commitment, attributes and sharing a goal.

www.womanthismonth.com

It is a myth that two women cannot work together; in fact, great ideas come to life when we do!” Noor states: “Fatema and I have been friends before this project; we enjoy working and facing challenges together. It is really important to take good care of your partner and to build a healthy bond with them. Our different backgrounds and qualifications helps us give our work the very best. In a lot of situations working with women may be easier because we understand each other best. However, successful women can efficiently work with both genders to achieve a common goal.” Going forward, Fatema aspires to be a board member one day, making important decisions and changing the low statistics of females at higher corporate levels. “I aspire to lead by example and leave a mark in empowering other women,” she says. Noor has become more passionate about women’s needs and aims to raise awareness of the important role they play in society. She says: “I would say to young women to take chances even if they feel they’re not ready, because opportunity does not knock on random doors.” October 2018

A WOMAN IN LEADERSHIP

JULIA DE SOUZA, VP OF OPERATIONS AND SERVICING AT AMEX MIDDLE EAST, OUTLINES HER CAREER JOURNEY. Please tell us a bit about your background? Do you come from a financial family?

I’m originally from Germany and have a Master’s in Business Administration. I moved with my parents to Bahrain in 1985, got my very first job at AMEX Middle East in marketing 20 years ago, met my husband, started a family and since then Bahrain has been home for me. Although my father was in the banking industry, that didn’t influence my decision to join the financial services industry.

Having studied business administration, international studies and marketing, how did you move into the world of finance?

I started as a marketing assistant and was always eager to develop and grow. With the support and coaching of the senior and experienced leaders at AMEX Middle East, who believed in my capabilities, I took various roles from marketing to new product development, to project management, strategic bank partnerships and now customer experience and operations. I’ve had eight positions at AMEX Middle East over the span of 20 years. Each one has enhanced my skill and competencies in different ways, allowing me to grow and develop within the company. Not every move was a step up the ladder, of course; some were lateral at the time. However, each offered the right experience and insight in order for me to move forward in my career.

What have been the most enjoyable roles you have held, and why?

I have truly enjoyed every role as they all involved building trusted relationships, negotiating, learning from people and understanding why they do what they do. But, if I had to pick, I would say the role I learned from the most was when I took over the massive implementation of the Single Technology Platform project for a year. It was incredibly challenging but probably the most satisfying role yet. My current role is by far the most exciting and enjoyable role, where my team and I strive day and night to deliver a seamless, trusted and rewarding service experience to our customers and partners, allowing us to build meaningful connections and long-lasting relationships.

What does your current role entail?

Simply put, I am responsible for continuously providing indispensable services to our cardmembers, corporate clients and merchant partners through an omni-channel approach 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The

50

October 2018

team consists of more than 100 colleagues who focus on delivering a service experience that makes a difference in our customers’ lives every day.

Have you found it difficult to reach such a high-level position in a traditionally maledominated industry?

In my experience, having the patience, conviction, passion, hard work and confidence in my own abilities were the key ingredients to my success. I have always had a leader who recognised my strengths, had faith in my abilities, when sometimes I didn’t, and was open and honest about my shortcomings so I could work on them. I must admit that I often thought – long before I got to this position – that one day I’d be sitting around the executive management table. I know that at AMEX Middle East it is not being a male or female that will give you a seat, it is the right attitude, the passion and the hard work the employees demonstrate. There are many factors to what have helped me grow: the appetite to learn, accepting

constructive feedback, perspective-taking, active listening, good mentorship and being true to yourself and, above all, being passionate about what you do and maintaining a positive attitude. At AMEX Middle East, the focus is on creating an environment where all employees are respected, feel fulfilled professionally and personally and look forward to coming to work. There are several programmes that focus on helping employees develop their skills, knowledge, and abilities through training, goal setting, employee career development, performance management, coaching, mentoring, succession planning and more. There is an open-door policy and we have formal and informal programmes to communicate with employees and to receive feedback about our workplace. I would say, if you work hard and show results, use your strengths and acknowledge your weaknesses, work with passion and positive energy, you will succeed. In addition, mentorship and camaraderie are critical to the success of women across all industries. www.womanthismonth.com

N

urture, or conditioning, is a reality we all face. Consciously or not, life around us is constantly giving messages and cues. One of these cues is that boys are inherently more interested in cars, in tools and in the more physical and technical aspects of life. Extrapolate this to 20 years later and you have a society where a lot of women feel overwhelmed with science, maths and a lot of things that are 'technical' including 'money decisions'. It’s simply lack of familiarity, not lack of interest. Let’s assume that you have decided to get involved in finances and to invest a small amount of money independently. The first step is to understand your motive, which will determine your investment horizon. Sometimes, we need quick money and sometimes we just want to invest toward a medium- to long-term goal. I am not getting into how much money you want to make because, of course, everyone wants the maximum money as fast as possible – but that directly means the highest risk and least security. That’s the balance that needs to be maintained. The principle is simple – the less freely available the money is to you, the higher is the amount of money you can make. The most basic form of investment is bank www.womanthismonth.com

deposits where you give your money to the bank and it gives you a certain interest payment for that money. This could be a regular savings deposit or a fixed deposit where your money is available to withdraw when you want it, or one that locks in the money for a certain period. Next, in terms of simplicity, is asset-based investments, namely things like real estate. Here you buy and own the asset. If you are not

living in it, you lease it and your returns are in the form of an increase in price or increase in the rental rate. The downside is that, other than the lease returns (which are modest in most cases), the returns are dependent on the actual sale of the asset. Also, the upfront amount of money usually entails loans which, of course, add complexity to financial planning. The security sometimes appears to be the highest because you 'own' the asset,

but do not forget to factor in the mortgage amount. You do not own it till your loan is paid out. Finally, for this article, we have share-based investment. This is simply owning very small amounts of companies and generating an income based on the success of that company. In the best case, the share price will rise, and dividends will also be declared. You can either own these shares directly in your name or through mutual funds wherein the fund manager invests in a changing set of companies to generate returns based on the share price. Again, the downside of share-based investments is the risk of not being able to sell the shares of certain companies when you want to, or being unable to share mutual fund units at the best price when you need the money. However, you can invest small amounts or big; it depends entirely on your pocket. The basic rules are based on common sense, namely, don’t put all your eggs in one basket, know what you are doing, why and for how long. Most important, never ever invest somewhere or with someone whom you cannot ask questions of. It’s your money, no amount is too small, no question too simple and, no matter what it seems like, you always have avenues to make money based on your unique balance of time, risk and returns. BEAUTY | tips

WEIRDLY WONDERFUL MASKS For this month’s beauty tips, Suzanne Nicholas gives you the low down on bizarre face masks for you to check out.

THE CUTE (?) FACTOR Sheet masks are face-shaped fabric masks soaked in a serum. The concentrated serum contains many dissolved ingredients that penetrate the skin in order to enhance it. With the result of taut, bright skin achieved conveniently and easily, these masks are many women’s go-to. Originating from South Korea, sheet masks mainly come as animal faces. Although intended to look cute, they tend to look a little scary once on. Don’t be fazed though, a plain sheet mask functions the same way, albeit being a little less fun, as the selfie element usually associated with the process is limited. You can apply it as often as you like throughout the week, leaving it on for about 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Simply start patting down from the forehead, in line with the holes cut out for your eyes, nose and mouth. Using a sheet mask three times a week will nurture your skin and give it a healthy glow.

LACE BUT NOT LEAST Lace masks are perfect for dull, tired skin. Not 100 per cent lace, these sheet masks come with a slightly coated layer of serum. Wash your face gently and dry completely. Then apply the lace mask as you would a regular sheet mask, and leave it on for about 20 to 30 minutes. The wet, somewhat jelly-like nature of the mask may tempt you to peel it off sooner, but bear withti, as it works instantly to refresh your skin. Once you’ve taken it off, you’ll notice your face is smoother and has a slight glow to it. The lace is not merely for aesthetic purposes, although it does look pretty. Lace helps to sculpt the skin of your face and boost it, almost like a temporary natural face-lift. Although a high-quality lace mask is expensive, the results are worth it. These masks can be used more than once, so check it out, and if it suits your skin type, it would be worth incorporating it into your skin-care routine.

FANCY FISHY FACE Applying fish eggs on your face might be the last thing you would think of for great skin, but many swear by highly moisturising caviar masks. These are available as sheet masks, or you can make one yourself at home as long as you’re willing to invest in the caviar, which may be somewhat pricey. With the DIY mask, all you have to do is mix a bit of whole milk plain yoghurt with a teaspoon of caviar and apply. You will notice reduced puffiness of the eyes, smaller pores, a softer and even skin tone and overall healthier, refreshed skin, as the caviar – rich in Omega3 and antioxidants – works its magic. Don’t worry about smelling fishy after the application. Fresh caviar shouldn’t smell, and if you’re using a sheet mask, they’re usually scented. Indulge in a caviar face mask once a week for optimum results. www.womanthismonth.com

DESSANGE PARIS

LOOK FAB IN A FLASH Behnaz Sanjana experimented with instant hair highlights at Dessange and went home with hair that looked straight out of a dream.

W

hen I was offered the opportunity to try out ‘instant highlights’ for my hair at Dessange, I was a tad hesitant. A quick search on the Internet for the term threw up misleading results – not helpful for someone who shies away from colouring her hair. But when the officials at the salon assured it would be nothing outrageous, I agreed. After all, Dessange is one of the most trusted names in style and beauty on the island. When I met Kate, my stylist, I had a feeling I was in good hands. She was confident and seemed to know exactly what she was doing. After a quick brief of the procedure, she started off by applying L’Oreal Studio Blonde lightening cream to the inner hair sections on the crown of my head. Nine cream-covered sections were neatly folded off in silver foil. While working in a nimble, expert fashion, she explained that this technique of instant highlights is much quicker compared to the tedious process of the conventional method. It’s perfect for busy career women and mums on the go, or anyone who does not often have time to spend at the salon. There is no bleaching involved and the ammonia-free lightener is less damaging. It can lighten the hair by up to six shades, depending on the www.womanthismonth.com

extent of damage the hair has already undergone with previous treatments. Kate used the balayage method to blend the highlights with my natural hair colour for a subtle effect. She went on to flat iron each of the foiled sections with a uniquely designed Studio Blonde hair iron. Once cool enough to handle, she removed the foils to reveal acrid, orangeyellow strands. I panicked inwardly, until she told me this wasn’t the final result. At the shampoo basin, my hair was washed with Studio Blonde shampoo to stop the lightening cream from working and clean the cuticles. Once ‘neutralised’, the sharp yellow tones turned to a softer shade, ready to take on the ash caramel that Kate had chosen to complement my dark brown mane. I was kept from becoming fidgety thanks to the massage chair I was sat on. A few more minutes with the toner on and a final rinse later, I enjoyed a reviving head massage. Added comfort and

attention to little details is what you get when you decide to trust a brand like Dessange for your personal grooming solution. Back at the salon station, my hair was blow dried, lightly curled and tousled into beachy waves. The toner had imparted a warm, caramel brown to the treated strands, contouring my face perfectly. To say I was pleased with my refreshed look would be an understatement. Just nine sections of highlights really brought out my natural hair colour and gave me a bright, well kempt look, all in under two hours. And, might I add, this beauty indulgence is quite fairly priced. Thank you Dessange! Call: 1771 3999.

TOP BRIDESMAID STYLES

A renowned figure among celebrities and a regular on red carpets, the name Asgar Saboo is synonymous with headline-grabbing, style-worthy hair.

Weddings are a thing of beauty – a time to come together and celebrate the marriage of two minds, souls and spirits. But they can also be stressful, with much of the dilemma coming in the form of hairstyles and dress choice. It’s important for the bridesmaids to adequately complement the style of the bride, showcasing superb takes on the latest bridal trends. As we head into the autumn wedding season, Asgar Saboo gives his take on the perfect bridesmaid hair trends. This easy-to-follow guide will have everyone looking the part on the bride’s big day.

ADD A HAIR BAND This is a simple and effective trick which works with a great dress.

It’s perfect for warm weather and oozes class. Think Greek goddess. Beautiful hair bands are the simple and effective way to add consistency between bridesmaids who might have different hair lengths, types and looks.

WATERFALL BRAID For the free-spirited bohemian wedding, I usually recommend my

clients to choose beach waves for the bridesmaid’s hairstyle. However, there are a few more options that you can consider. I am obsessed with the waterfall braid incorporated into the ‘cool girl’ beach waves look. This adds extra texture, suits most bridesmaids and looks all round exquisite. And the best part is – it’s easy to recreate.

Step 1:

Apply heat-protecting spray and blow-dry hair as usual.

Step 2:

Apply texturing spray to the lengths of the hair and use widebarrelled wand to create loose beachy waves. Don’t worry about getting each wave perfect. This look works the best with hair call ‘messy-neat’.

Step 3:

Apply lightweight hairspray to secure waves.

Step 4:

Now it’s the time for the waterfall part. Start by taking a big section in front and separating it into three strands.

Step 5:

Take the back strand and cross it over the middle. Next take the front strand and cross it over the middle.

Step 6:

Now take the back section and add a little section of hair into it. Cross this back strand (with added new section) over the middle.

Step 7:

Leave the front strand as it is and take a section of hair behind the front strand and cross it over the middle

Step 8:

Repeat the same steps all the way to the back of the head and secure with an elastic band.

Step 9:

Spray hairspray again.

Top tip:

For a more sophisticated and classic look, create this waterfall look on the sleek hair.

FLOATING FLOWERS I love the floating flowers look and they look amazing as part of the ponytail. To achieve this look your bridesmaid’s will have to follow these simple steps:

Step 1:

Blow-dry the hair as normal. Don’t forget to apply heat protection beforehand, as you don’t want any damaged hair. Try doing a hair mask beforehand or simply sleep with coconut oil in your hair. This will ensure the style looks healthy, shiny and all around jaw-dropping.

Step 2:

Step 5:

Add flowers for the finishing touch. To make sure they, stay glue them to the hair using hair glue. Spray lightweight hairspray to make sure the style lasts and to limit those fly-aways. If the wedding takes place in the hot climate, don’t forget to apply anti-humidity spray.

Apply texturing spray to the roots for added texture and volume.

Step 3: Use a wide-barrelled wand to curl the hair if it’s lacking a natural curl already.

Step 4: Divide hair into a middle parting and tie it back in a low ponytail. Use invisible thin ties – you can get those from most pharmacies or beauty shops.

Top tip:

Flowers should be placed randomly. Don’t overthink. www.womanthismonth.com

BATTLING BREAST CANCER TOGETHER

According to the World Health Organisation, cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide. With 2.09 million cases so far in 2018, breast cancer is one of the most common leading to 627,000 recorded deaths annually, though the actual figure is likely to be higher.

agree on, it’s that early detection is the key to a good outcome. Getting into the habit of self-examination and undergoing regular screening are two of the best ways to protect yourself, as discussed by the experts in the coming pages.

However, a diagnosis of breast cancer surely does not automatically mean death. Survival rates are improving every year as are methods of treatment.

Each year in October, the Kingdom goes pink in support of local charity Think Pink and here at WTM we always want to show our support. Read on for words from Shaikha Alanood Al Khalifa who has taken it upon

A HAIR-RAISING INITIATIVE

Shaikha Alanood Al Khalifa told Liz O’Reilly of a unique initiative to help women feel good while battling breast and other cancers.

A

lanood, who owns Glass Salon, has previously supported Think Pink, the island’s breast cancer charity, with an auction but says: “Female cancer is something very close to our hearts at the salon, since all our clients are women, and we wanted to do something practical to support them. Our staff are passionate about helping our clients to feel their best, whatever the circumstances.” The salon offers free haircuts for people who want donate their locks to make wigs for cancer sufferers and interest is increasing. But Shaikha Alanood says: “We wanted to have a fundraising, haircutting event but then I thought ‘What’s the point of cutting all this hair and sending it out of the country?’ “At the moment, the closest place to send hair donations is Dubai, and most wigs are actually created much further afield. I found a full-service salon in New York, which makes the wigs from scratch using human hair, for those suffering conditions such as cancer and alopecia. We are currently collecting donated hair to send there. However, the New York salon is prepared to come here and teach us how to make the wigs, which means the hair donated in Bahrain will stay in Bahrain.”

planning a small launch to raise awareness of the process,” says Shaikha Alanood. She adds that, currently, with wigs being made out of the country, the process is both expensive and time consuming. Getting training to make the wigs locally would cut both and enable more wigs to be made for those who need them. It would also enable customisation of an already hand-made process.

Handmaking the custom wigs

On hearing of the initiative, she was contacted by a salon in Saudi Arabia, which is doing something similar and they are looking at working together. And, Shaikha Alanood is also hopeful that other Bahraini salons will get involved – the more hair that is collected and donated, the more wigs can be made.

For those wanting to donate their hair, Gloss offers a free haircut. The hair, which has to be at least 12 inches long and not bleached (though it can be coloured), is then saved. Nine heads are needed to make one wig. And, of course, since the wigs will be going to those whose immune systems are already compromised, the production process is chemical free. The New York salon is currently working on the first Bahrain wig. “We’re very excited about this but finding a recipient is a sensitive subject, so we’re working with Think Pink and perhaps www.womanthismonth.com

BREAST CANCER 101 BAHRAIN SPECIALIST HOSPITAL

Dr Deepthi Silymon, medical oncology consultant, shares the facts on breast cancer.

Breast cancer makes up about 30 per cent of new cancer diagnoses in women and 15 per cent of all new cancer cases each year. The disease can affect men, too, but this is very rare. Approximately one in eight women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer at some

Outlook An early diagnosis of breast cancer not only increases the chance of cure, but also decreases the treatment time and fewer modalities of treatment may be needed. With treatment, a woman who receives a diagnosis of stage zero or stage one breast cancer has an almost 95 to 100 per cent chance of surviving for at least five years. If the diagnosis is made at an advanced stage, this is reduced to around 22 per cent.

point in their lives. Awareness of the symptoms and screening are important in reducing the risk. The first symptoms of breast cancer are usually a lump in the breast or in the armpit, characteristically painless unless in late stages, and nipple or skin changes.

Prevention Lifestyle decisions can significantly reduce the risk of breast and other types of cancer. Avoiding excess alcohol and high fatty food consumption. Following a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and oily fish. Antioxidant foods may be taken daily, especially berries, dark chocolate (above 80 per cent cocoa), green tea, etc. Physical activity of at least 30 minutes every day. Maintaining a healthy body mass index (BMI). Reduced exposure to estrogen, especially HRT (breast feeding helps).

Dr. Deepthi

Remember

Many breast lumps are not cancerous, but any woman who is concerned about a lump or change should see a doctor. Regular checks and screening can help detect symptoms early. Women can discuss the frequency and risk reduction options with their doctor. High-risk individuals (when a first-degree relative has breast or ovarian cancer and women who carry the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes) may need more frequent and early screening. Julia Tovey, group CEO at American Mission Hospital, updates Adnan Sipra about the non-profit institution’s plans for the Breast Cancer Awareness campaign this month.

ulia Tovey strides purposefully down a corridor at the American Mission Hospital. “This is every woman’s nightmare,” she says, sotto voce, as she rounds a corner and enters a small room where a machine occupies most of the available space. A technician stands attentively as Julia gestures towards the apparatus. “This is a mammogram machine,” she explains. “And, to elaborate on what I said earlier, it is the fear of the unknown that spurs every woman’s nightmare as she prepares to undergo an examination of her breasts.” A specialist in neonatal intensive care and cardiothoracic nursing, Julia created history in 2011 by becoming the first-ever woman to be appointed chief operating officer (COO) of AMH. Now the Group CEO, she outlines how the non-profit institution intends to reach out to communities during the annual Breast Cancer Awareness campaign this month. “AMH’s mission is to reach out to every community in Bahrain,” she says, leading the way back to her office. “We do events all through the year: for children with special needs, for out-patients, for breast screenings. But, in October this year, as, indeed, we have done in previous years, we will have dedicated www.womanthismonth.com

“It has absolutely nothing to do with size but to do with either genes or other contributing factors,” she points out. “Now, they can screen your genes. I mean … it’s great, but it’s also scary because, essentially, this is predicting your future. And this, quite emphatically, also reinforces the concept of healthcare now: it is not about curing, it is about preventing illnesses.” Since Julia completed an advanced flight physiology course from the Royal Air Force (she also worked with Saudi ARAMCO’s hospital to set up its flight team, having completed a neonatal/paediatric flight training programme, which covers the transportation of sick children by air), she invokes an airline analogy to stress her point about prevention being better than cure.

mammogram and a breast ultrasound,” Julia says. “Of course, this is for patients who can afford to pay. And that, in turn, since the money goes into our charity, enables those less fortunate to be able to undergo the testing as well.” She dismisses the notion that size contributes to the prevalence of breast cancer.

“Women have to take ownership of their health,” she says. “They can’t keep putting off tests or screenings or mammograms for whatever reason. Only if they are healthy will they be able to take care of their own. You know what they say in the plane just before takeoff: if and when the oxygen mask drops down, put it on first and, then, help your kin. The same applies to your health. Look after yourself and you’ll be able to look after others.” October 2018

BATTLING BREAST CANCER WITH THE LATEST IN TECHNOLOGY AND TECHNIQUES

D

r Murat Koc has a great deal of experience in the field of female cancers. As well as his own practice, he runs a clinic at King Hamad University Hospital where he is the director of gynae-oncology, which is the preferred government option for cervical and ovarian surgery. He also spent many years as an oncology consultant in Germany as well as seven years as a consultant and department head at one of Bahrain’s premier private hospitals. For the past year he has operated the Dr Murat Women’s Clinic specialising in minimally invasive gynaecology, in terms of diagnostics, with any necessary surgeries being performed by the doctor at the private hospital of the patient’s choice.

One of his several specialities is breast care. He says: “Figures show that one in eight women will be affected by breast cancer at some point in their lives. And here in the GCC the average age is lower than in Europe, which is down to multiple reasons. “Many tests in Bahrain, and in general, diagnose cancer but do not necessarily accurately determine its stage for the most effective treatment. I am constantly working to bring in techniques and technologies that improve the accuracy of not only diagnosis but the correct stage and specifically the genetics of the tumour being diagnosed.” The clinic carries out the required diagnostics that include ultrasound elastography, which is one of the most advanced forms of breast scan from the US and has been shown to provide heightened levels of accuracy. Dr Murat also provides laboratory services, including genetic testing, not just for the well-known BRACA genes but for other predisposing issues. He says: “You have to bear in mind that

not only is every patient different, but the genetics of every tumour are also different, so it is important to take this into account when determining treatment. “Dr Murat Women’s Clinic prides itself on empowering women when it comes to their wellness. A key part of making a woman feel in control of a disease, that otherwise feels uncontrollable, is by making sure she feels she knows, as thoroughly as possible, what she is dealing with in her individual case along with supporting her so that she and her family don’t feel alone in their battle. We ensure that all patients are given the relevant information, so they are kept aware throughout their treatment. “We also work with a Tumour Board – a group of specialist doctors who are working in cancer treatment and get together to formulate the best practice treatment advice. “It is important to us to team up with fellow experts in the medical field to continuously enhance the quality of medical treatment in the country as part of a bigger ambition. We want to make sure patients faced with cancer diagnoses have options and advanced care www.womanthismonth.com

FEATURE | breast cancer awareness when it comes to their particular condition.” Speaking on the critical issue of awareness and regular screening, Dr Murat continues: “Early cancer screening is key to saving lives. And with each stage of your life, the check-ups you need change slightly. It is imperative that good habits start young. I often find that there is a perception that a pap smear or a breast exam can wait or that it’s ‘only important in my later years’. This is simply not true. Early screening starting from your teen years is the key to prevention of diseases such as breast or cervical cancer. “We suggest all patients aged 30 to 45 have an ultrasound ever six months. After 45 we recommend a mammogram every two years. It is crucial for patients to be aware of the importance of early detection. “If a cancer diagnosis is made, we speak with the patient and her family. We want them to be well informed at all stages of treatment, including aftercare. “We’ve recently started using a new treatment, so it’s not only surgery with radio and chemotherapy. There is also, now, immunotherapy checkpoint treatment which allows us to specifically target the tumour. It’s not yet advanced enough to use this treatment alone but work is ongoing.” (See box.)

Immunotherapy, also called biologic therapy, is a type of cancer treatment that boosts the body's natural defences to fight cancer. It uses substances made by the body or in a laboratory to improve or restore immune system function. Checkpoint inhibitors are a type of immunotherapy. They block proteins that stop the immune system from attacking the cancer cells. Our immune system protects us from disease, killing bacteria and viruses. One www.womanthismonth.com

But, equally as importantly, Dr Murat adds: “We care a lot about prevention. We want patients to be aware of the need for regular screenings so that. if there is a problem, it is caught early. “If treatment is needed, from lumpectomy [where just the lump is removed] to oncoplastic repair and reconstruction, we also provide excellent aftercare and continue to screen for the first five years.” To promote awareness and early diagnosis, throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in October, About Dr Murat Dr Murat will German and Bahrain Board-Certified Consultant for obstetrics/ be carrying out gynaecology and gynaecologic oncology, breast cancer specialist and a number of advanced minimally invasive gynaecology specialist. presentations Dr Murat is a leading authority in minimally invasive gynaecology across the and the treatment of malignant and benign pelvic gynaecologic island speaking disease in the region. main type of immune cell that does this is called a T cell. T cells have proteins on them that turn on an immune response and other proteins that turn it off. These are called checkpoints. Some checkpoint proteins help tell T cells to become active: for example, when an infection is present. But if T cells are active for too long, or react to things they shouldn’t, they can start to destroy healthy cells and tissues. So other checkpoints help tell T cells to switch off.

Some cancer cells make high levels of proteins. These can switch off T cells, when they should really be attacking the cancer cells. So, the cancer cells are pushing a stop button on the immune system. And the T cells can no longer recognise and kill cancer cells. Drugs that block checkpoint proteins are called checkpoint inhibitors. They stop the proteins on the cancer cells from pushing the stop button. This turns the immune system back on and the T cells are able to find and attack the cancer cells. October 2018

HEROINES IN THE ER To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Bahrain Credit’s Imtiaz For Her asks four leading women in medicine to share their experiences and thoughts as doctors.

DR AMEERA AL MOSALI Consultant orthodontist Dr Ameera has 20 years of experience, including at the Ministry of Health for over 15 years. She runs Dental Club, a specialised dental centre, and holds memberships in orthodontics with the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and Ireland. On dealing with professional challenges…

Life is more exciting with challenges, without which one will not be motivated to do one’s best.

I’m most proud of…

Successfully specialising in orthodontics at my own initiative and merit from abroad. It was a long wait with many hurdles. I was one of the top students.

My experience as a woman in medicine… Patients appreciate and trust the artistic touch of a woman to give them the best orthodontic results.

My life lessons…

Advising patients from a dental perspective, and guiding them in setting realistic results.

My biggest strength as a doctor…

Being honest with patients. I am remembered for not being ‘commercial’ in my practice. I constantly update myself with knowledge and my clinic with the

64

latest equipment.

About women taking care of themselves… Women delay dental hygiene sessions till a small problem becomes a big issue. Visit the dentist regularly, even when teeth and gums are healthy, to avoid painful problems in the future, especially during pregnancy.

The role mothers and teachers play for a healthy society…

They teach the importance of good dental hygiene and developing the habit of scheduled dental sessions.

How I support breast cancer awareness… I offer discounts, special treatments and protocol particularly for breast cancer patients.

I’d say to breast cancer fighters…

I salute your zest for life, optimism and positivity. With advanced technology, you can be a winner.

DR MARIAM BAQI Consultant dermatologist Dr Mariam has been practising medicine since 2005. This mum of three has fellowships in clinical and cosmetic dermatology from Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. She currently works at Salmaniya Hospital. On dealing with professional challenges…

My extreme faith in God and strong family network has helped me through many obstacles. Reminding myself that everything is temporary helps to live in the moment and solve problems calmly and with focus.

I’m most proud of…

Making a name out of nothing – no family name, power or shortcuts. Hard work and knowledge have brought me to where I am today.

My experience as a woman in medicine…

Although dermatology is a more benign field compared to other streams, sadly, some male doctors cannot accept women beating them with talent and knowledge. A colleague once said that I’d rather not take up the challenge of running my own clinic and work under male supervision. Let's see about that!

My life lessons…

Health is the greatest wealth you can have. Practising medicine is doing a good deed every day;

never turn it into a business.

My biggest strength as a doctor…

Social media to communicate with society! On women taking care of themselves… Your body is the machine you will work, accomplish goals and succeed through, so maintain it well, internally and externally.

The role mothers and teachers play for a healthy society… By adopting habits that will automatically be inherited by their kids and students.

How I support breast cancer awareness…

By encouraging women to take care of their health, eat healthy and respect their bodies.

I’d say to breast cancer fighters…

You are heroes we look up to! One day you will tell your story to enlighten and inspire other people.

DR SARA AL REEFY Consultant general surgeon

Dr Sara is sub-specialised in breast and oncoplastic surgery from London, with 15 years of experience. She runs the London Breast Care Centre and is a recipient of the Bahrain Entrepreneurship Award. On dealing with professional challenges…

It was a tough ride in a maledominated profession. I balance my practice and raising my children by being organised and creating action plans with proper delegation and follow-up.

I’m most proud of…

Helping patients through breast cancer and my survivors who fight the disease with strength and courage.

My experience as a woman in medicine…

Male colleagues thought I wasn’t up for the hard work or long hours of surgery. I always proved them wrong by making double the effort. Of course, it was well worth it.

My life lessons…

Building a good career equally depends on one’s knowledge, skills and attitude.

My biggest strength as a doctor…

Being committed, available and close to my patients to build a strong patient-doctor relationship.

About women taking care of themselves…

Stress imbalances women’s hormones and this manifests in disease at a young age. I strongly advise women to de-stress on a daily basis. Prayers, meditation, yoga and exercise are useful.

The role mothers and teachers play for a healthy society…

I am a mother of three lovely children and my mother is a teacher. We must serve a rainbow diet (colourful food based on fruits and vegetables) of healthy snacks and packed lunches. Teachers must encourage daily exercise.

How I support breast cancer awareness…

Every October my clinic reaches out to the public and corporates to encourage women to get screened. Our mobile unit roams Bahrain to do free breast scans for all women.

BATTLING BREAST CANCER

Chemotherapy has shown high success rates in treating malignant tumours of the breast. Behnaz Sanjana finds out more about what it is and its undesirable effects. With breast cancer being an unfortunate, but common, occurrence amongst the world’s female population, the word chemotherapy as a way of treatment is a familiar one. It is different from other forms of treatment, like radiation or surgery, in that it does not remove, eradicate or impair cancer cells in a targeted area of the body, but works all over the body. WTM has done the research and consulted with an expert in caring for those fighting the disease to give you a well-rounded gist of what to expect. Overview of Chemotherapy Chemotherapy (also referred to as chemo) may be used to either completely cure cancer for good or simply control the tumours from growing and spreading. The latter allows the patient to live better and longer, even if the malignancy has not completely gone away. However, in advanced cases, it is administered as a form of palliation, which means to help improve the quality of the patient’s life by reducing pain or discomfort caused by cancer. The oncologist (a doctor specialising in the

diagnosis and treatment of cancer) decides which chemotherapy drugs a patient needs (it could be one or a combination of several) and the dosage they require. This depends upon the type and stage of the cancer, the patient’s age, other health conditions and previous treatments received. Most of these medications are very strong drugs and need to be given in precisely calculated dosages and schedules. What’s important is to give enough chemo to kill the cancer cells without causing other serious problems. (source: www.cancer.org) As chemo drugs work throughout the body, they have some unwanted side effects, besides working against malignant cells. A representative of Think Pink, Bahrain (name withheld on request), who is also a breast nurse at one of Bahrain’s most renowned and trusted hospitals talks about how to deal with the chemotherapy and its fallouts.

66

October 2018

“Between six and eight sessions of chemotherapy may be required,” she says, speaking specifically of breast cancer. “Of course, this depends on the histopathology result of the tumour. The sessions are spaced three to four weeks apart. The medicine is given intravenously at the hospital and the patient can go home the same day.” She mentions that, usually, radiation therapy is given to the cancerous area after chemotherapy sessions are completed. “This is followed by hormone therapy for almost five years as a prophylactic [a preventive measure],” she adds. Our expert maintains that it is important that patients know about their treatment plan and the side effects of chemotherapy. “During and after chemotherapy, one is advised to take rest, take medications as prescribed, eat healthy food and avoid coming in contact with sick people for a few days, till their own immunity recovers. Chemotherapy is the most difficult time in cancer treatment, so it is best to concentrate on the treatment’s goal with high spirits and a positive outlook,” she says. The most common undesirable effects of chemotherapy are hair loss, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. “These side effects occur because chemotherapy given through the veins also damages healthy cells,” says our expert, while giving us tips in dealing with other lesser known consequences of the treatment. www.womanthismonth.com

the tumour only) or mastectomy (removal of the breast). If the physician plans a mastectomy the patient has the option to do a reconstructive surgery,” she says. Reconstructive surgery can be done at the same time as the mastectomy, or at a later stage. In this procedure, a plastic surgeon reconstructs the breast either with tissue from another location on the body or with an implant or sometimes both. Prosthetics are an alternative to reconstruction, and involve a prosthesis (also called a breast form) to give the body the look of a natural female form.

Staying positive and strong during breast cancer treatment:

- Get support from family, friends and other survivors. - Plan you day, prioritise and organise what is necessary. - Take good rest. - Exercise daily. Our expert reminds women that early detection is key to surviving breast cancer. She says: “All women are advised to have an annual check-up to facilitate early detection of the problem. THE WESTIN CITY CENTRE BAHRAIN

AWAKEN YOUR SENSES Pamper yourself at the Heavenly Spa by Westin with a plethora of treatments, one of which Apple Sharma experienced and found to be gloriously rejuvenating.

L

ocated at The Westin City Centre Bahrain, in the heart of bustling Manama, Heavenly Spa is a tranquil space offering a perfect escape from the hubbub of city life. True to its name, the spa conjured up memories of some of the exquisite spas I’ve experienced around the world. As I walked in, the quiet, dark corridors, dimly-lit with candles, immediately conveyed a relaxed and cosy environment. Masseuse, Yanee, was to administer the 60-minute Heavenly Spa Signature Massage, something I welcomed with open arms after a long, tiring week. She did a quick consultation to assess if I had any problem areas or anything that needed extra attention, and quickly had me lying face down (yes, in the dreaded hole in the table, which can be quite uncomfortable). But, the table was well-cushioned and my face cocooned comfortably in it. A bowl of pot pourie with a gentle fragrance wafting up was a welcomed touch. Yanee’s quick dry massage gave my muscles a little wake up call, after which began

68

October 2018

the actual Swedish massage. Using sweetsmelling warm aloe vera oil, she expertly kneaded every part of my body, starting from the lower back, all the way up to my arms and shoulders in both upward and downward motions, concentrating on the troubled areas. I could feel the tension lifting from my muscles as she massaged deeper into the tissues to remove all the knots. After finishing the oil massage, she used a warm herb ball – a small contraption with a handle and rounded head – filled with various herbs that emanated an earthy smell. Warm to the touch, she patted it all over, pressing it gently to allow the muscles to soak up the heat. It felt like a rubber ball being pressed into my skin – a strange sensation at first, but rather enjoyable once I got used to it, as it helped me relax further. Having finished the top half of my body, she started on the legs. Wearing heels, constantly, gives my calf muscles a good workout, even when I haven’t been to the gym. So, this part of the massage was my favourite. I could feel all the tension

disappearing slowly and the sweet ache and relief was so welcome. Floating on cloud nine as my legs turned to jelly, she gently brought me back to earth by asking me to lie on my back. The heavenly treatment continued from my feet up, taking in my legs, stomach, arms and shoulders, and finished with a wonderful face and head massage. I had a lovely tingling in my entire body and felt like every muscle had returned from a vacation. An hour had flown by, and alas, as all good things must come to an end, I reluctantly left the massage table. To top it off, Yanee took me to the relaxation room, where I had ginger-honey tea and biscuits waiting for me. True to the promise of the spa, I felt physically and mentally relaxed, re-energised and absolutely heavenly. I couldn’t have asked for a better spa treatment – I left feeling like a new person and made a promise to myself to return again, soon! Pure Yoga + Cycle (PYC) offers a comprehensive course on meditation; the ideology which brings together the trinity of mind, body and soul.

editation enables one to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state by focusing the mind on a particular object, thought or activity. This age-old routine has spread from its origins to several other cultures today. The goal of this concept is to focus and understand your mind – eventually reaching a higher level of awareness and inner calm. Neurologists have found that it can change your brain in ways that can help you to control emotions, enhance concentration, decrease stress, and even become more connected to those around you. With practice, a sense of tranquility and peace can be achieved, no matter what the external scenario around you. Other benefits include controlling anxiety, promoting emotional health and enhancing self awareness. It also helps to lengthens one’s attention span, reduce agerelated memory loss, improve sleep, decrease blood pressure, control pain and fight addiction using mind control. PYC offers a comprehensive course on meditation called Dhyaan, where participants learn to follow and teach its techniques, from November 11 to 16 between 9.30am and 5.30pm. The 50-hour intensive

programme will be rich and authentic in content, and is apt for regular practitioners of meditation and yoga who want to deepen their practice. It is also meant for those wanting to teach the concept as a career, or anyone wanting to commit to a disciplined lifestyle and personal transformation. ONE FOR THE LADIES

Café Mosaic woos women with a breakfast deal at a price that sounds too good to be true. Behnaz Sanjana hops over to verify the unbeatable offer.

E

arly one morning, after the kids had skipped happily away to school and the husband had been seen off to work, I felt uncharacteristically upbeat. I was looking forward to breakfast at the Wyndham Garden Manama’s Café Mosaic, where it’s Ladies Breakfast time every weekday, from 7am to 10.30am. Settling down at the table, I saw an extensive buffet laid out against skyhigh views of Juffair and beyond. At just BD4 for the generous spread in a smart-casual ambience, this all-youcan-eat offer is a steal. The place was humming with buoyant chatter (well, it is a breakfast for ladies, after all), the sizzle of eggs being made to order and the jolly laughter of restaurant supervisor Renante, who was at his service-best. I inspected the buffet, my eyes roving along the counter laden with delicious breakfast staples to fully awaken the mind and enliven the senses. Hot dishes included baked beans, ful medames, colourful steamed vegetables, crispy hash browns, fatayer, spring rolls, glossy vegetable noodles, plus beef sausages and turkey bacon for sides. The fragrant Aloo Bhaji (semi-dry potato dish) looked inviting,

adjacent to soft, golden puris. Of course, I dove right in, breaking my night’s fast with wholesome goodness. There is an entire section dedicated to cold salads and meze, a wide assortment of breads, a cheese platter, as well as cereal options, porridge, kanji and unlimited coffee to start the day right. The amiable chef at the egg counter expertly whipped up a cheese omelette for me, while another spooned silken batter onto a hot iron grid to plate up waffles for our table. There were pancakes too, to choose from. All I had to do was douse my waffle with either honey, strawberry or

chocolate sauce and crunchy nuts. The omelette’s yellow exterior gave way to a soft, cheesy heart, with the vegetables adding healthy texture. The caramelised waffle encased a fluffy interior. It was supposed to be my sweet finale, but then I was tempted by the muffins and pastries sitting pretty; their gleaming, egg-washed surfaces calling out to me. Downing fresh orange juice for my morning dose of vitamin C, there was nothing else to do other than admire the calming views from the 28th floor. I had the opportunity to chat to executive chef Udo, who lends his charming warmth to his culinary preparations. The German gourmet has years of experience behind him, and aims to lure the ladies to Café Mosaic by coaxing the best out of simple, honest fare. Whether you are a rest-deprived mummy, or basking in the glory of your golden years; whether you are motivated enough to stick to your healthy eating plan, or want to throw dietary caution to the wind; Café Mosaic is the place to reconnect with your soul sisters. VEGAN VIEW

Lahan Sperinck writes on myths and misconceptions.

When it comes to the topic of veganism, there is no shortage of misunderstandings, ranging from diet to the resulting chaos if the world turned vegan. Having heard it all, I wanted to address a handful of my personal favourites.

We’ll be overrun by livestock if we stop eating meat.

I don’t suspect that cows would spread like wildfire and take over if we left them alone. The reality is that people are only going to make changes gradually. With gradual change comes a gradual reduction in demand for meat and therefore supply. So, it’s not looking like you’re going to get a cow and chicken infestation anytime soon.

We’re hunter-gatherers though!

The most 'hunting' and 'gathering' anyone does any more is drive their air-conditioned car to Alosra. So, I’m not quite sure what the point is. We clearly don’t understand what it means to be a hunter-gatherer in this technological age. What a lot of people don’t know is that in between the hunts of old, humans foraged a lot and ate copious amounts of fruit, vegetables and nuts (with

www.womanthismonth.com

a few bugs here and there). Not to mention that this only happened during 10 per cent of our evolution. Before that, we were even more plant-based. Either way, what our ancestors did is not why most people choose their lifestyle. If it was, we'd still make fire by banging rocks together and be living in caves.

Vegans live off of leaves and plain tofu

First off, you’d be surprised what you can make with some leaves and tofu. Second, this eyeroll-worthy cliché needs to end. Maybe there’s some truth in it, but you can’t paint everyone with the same brush. People are vegan because they care about the animals or the environment or their health or a combination of those things. Nowhere does it say that they are vegan because they all share the same interest in tasteless food. On the contrary, vegan junk food is delicious and, because it’s healthier than regular junk food, we can justify eating it more often. Now that we’ve set record straight on a few of these overplayed misconceptions, you can confidently approach a vegan without insulting them with stories about rioting hordes of cows and carnivorous cavemen.

RECORD-BREAKING BIC RUN The Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid set a lap record at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC).

W

ith a blistering time of 02:18:96, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid established the fastest completion of a lap for a luxury four-door hybrid saloon at the BIC. The record in Bahrain is part of a wider programme, achieving six best times for this model category on six racetracks within the wider region of the Middle East, India and South Africa. The Stuttgart-based manufacturer put its performance credentials to the test and once again reinforced the benefits of transferring technology developed on the track to roadlegal models. As a descendant of the successful 919 Hybrid race car, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid is the fastest and most fuel-efficient Panamera to date and forms an important part of the brand’s E-Performance strategy. Piloted by Porsche testing and development driver Lars Kern, a standard production version of the four-door sports car took on the challenge of setting a record lap time at the BIC. The lap record was set on the GP configuration of the circuit with its 14 turns, using standard road tyres.

74

October 2018

Colin Sattar, GM of Porsche Centre Bahrain, says: “Porsche has an unrivalled heritage of setting lap records on some of the world’s most famous racetracks, so to now add the Bahrain International Circuit to that list is an impressive accolade. We often talk about the pedigree of Porsche sports cars as well as the impressive output of the brand’s hybrid models. This newly set lap time is the perfect example of performance promises brought to life.” Porsche has continuously been at the forefront of advancing hybrid sports cars. In 2014, the company was the first to offer three plug-in models, across three segments. Fast forward to the present day and electrification continues to form a crucial part of its product offering, with the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid as proof of what electric technology represents for the brand. The electric motor provides extra boost to the V8, four-litre twin turbo combustion engine, enabling the luxury saloon to complete a 100km/h sprint in just 3.4 seconds, and offers extraordinary tractive force at higher speeds. Delivering a top speed of 310km/h, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid

sets unparalleled benchmarks in its class. Performance, comfort and efficiency form a perfect three-way combination in the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. It starts in the purely electric 'E-Power' mode as standard, and the four-door sports car drives locally over a distance of up to 50km with zero emissions. When a specific pressure point is passed on the accelerator pedal, or when the battery charge level drops below a minimum value, the Panamera switches to “Hybrid Auto” mode, at which point the power of both the combustion engine and electric motor, are made available. As part of the overall Performance Electrified campaign, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid also set benchmark lap times at: Yas Marina Circuit, UAE (2:31:79), Kyalami, South Africa (1:59:08), Buddh, India (2:12:56), Dubai Autodrome, UAE (2:19:15) and Losail, Qatar (2:24:12). Gazing Libra

Raphael tells us what’s written in the stars this month.

Money due from earlier in the year finally reaches your bank account and you can look forward to a mini shopping spree and a holiday. However, you should beware a relative who may seek to turn your good fortune to their own advantage. Learn to exercise caution and restraint or you will be left vulnerable to the desires of others. An enemy from the past crosses swords briefly around the 29th but this will only strengthen your resolve to succeed.

Scorpio

October will see you reach an emotional peak in a relationship as you witness past hardships or troubles with a partner finally dispersing and a new development emerging that brings the two of you closer than ever. The first steps down this road might not be as easy as you first believed and you will both have to deal with some particularly deep soul searching and even one or two painful admissions. Still, you should accept the truth.

Sagittarius

An unforeseen reshuffle at work will see your position change dramatically and even force you to believe that enough is finally enough. Also, a partner’s depressive mood swings could lead to conflict within a relationship and concerns at work are likely to make you less tolerant. If there is a good side to all of this, then it is simply that the remainder of the year promises much better and the scales will tilt in your favour!

Capricorn

Your determined and often stubborn nature could see you digging in and preparing yourself for a fight but this might not be the best solution. Try and negotiate a more settled and balanced passage otherwise it could see you losing out because of pride rather than love. On the work front, positive steps will bring new opportunities and you could have the chance to work abroad.

Aquarius

October will prove to be a very good month for many of you and it’s likely a trip overseas will leave you with some memorable moments to ponder over – especially in the area of relationships. You could find yourself encountering romance in an unlikely setting and some highly charged emotions might be set free. Work will also feature highly towards the end of the month, with a task you thought successfully completed returning to haunt you. www.womanthismonth.com

Pisces

You have been made to suffer romantically over the last few months although it seemed recently that perhaps things were improving. However, your return to some semblance of normality has hit a stumbling block and you could start thinking that your relationship is right back where it was when all the problems first began. The roots of this romance have a firm base; you both just need convincing that this is really the case.

Aries

Many good things were achieved last month and the outcomes will spill into October with a lot more positives to embrace. Chief is the fact that financial matters will have improved after you agree new terms on a family arrangement. Healthwise you should stop putting off any planned visit to the opticians and get your eyes tested. Don’t allow vanity to dictate your actions and potentially hold you back!

Taurus

October arrives filled with the promise of adventure and creative development as you decide to re-immerse yourself in a project that the pressures of life have forced you to ignore. Suddenly you will start to feel your imagination fire and a new energy put spark to your potential. Take heart from this development; it could mean the start of great things. Discovery leads to some extra money in your pocket.

Gemini

Insecurities about a relationship will be finally be put to rest this month and you should look towards making plans to heal a longstanding rift that was born out of such issues. It won’t all be plain sailing but things will be a lot better; you need to assess several opportunities before taking the plunge! On the work front you could suffer the imposition

of a new boss who decides to reshape your role without fully appreciating the scope of what you do.

Cancer

October proves to be a momentous month for you as your world takes a positive change, putting your life on a completely different track. You will find yourself at your most contented and assured for some time, with many of the people for whom you have affection proving to be supportive and caring. On the work front, things will be a little sparse and you could find yourself with more time than you know how to deal with.

Leo

Your world is set for a shake-up and you will be forced to make some tough choices over the coming weeks, some that will have longlasting effects. Events could begin to take shape in this direction around the first week in October and the pace and change will not be to your liking. It seems that someone in your family circle is set on a course to distance themselves from you and there may be little you can do about it. A strained relationship that has a history to it should give you a clue as to the person’s identity.

Virgo

You’re oddly preoccupied this month and you find yourself feeling slightly shackled or restricted by certain people close to you. Make sure you stamp your own authority on the situation bothering you most, otherwise matters will quickly move out of your hands! As it is, October does not look like arriving in the best fashion for you, with the early part of the month seeing you involved in a rather serious disagreement with a partner. Things will improve around the 17th but only if you let the firmer side of your character come to the fore. October 2018

last word

In Her Shoes Aiswarya Vineeth, programming head at Radio Mirchi, tells us what makes her tick.

Do you have a hidden talent?

What three things do you not leave home without?

I write poetry in my free time and many don't know about it...so maybe that’s my hidden talent.

My mobile, sunglasses and my favourite lip balm.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Give 100 per cent to whatever you do in your life and just be unstoppable!

If money were no object, what one thing would you like to own? Maybe an open ticket to travel the world, I love travelling.

Aiswarya Vineeth

Where would you like to be in five years?

In the next five years, I would still love to be spreading the love and smiles just as I do now and, of course, pursuing my passion for radio, too.

What’s your all-time favourite film? The Motorcycle Diaries and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara because both are travel movies!

Spender or saver?

I’m a spender, which I need to control and start being a saver!

If you could choose one person or band to see in concert (alive or dead) who would it be?

J.Lo is an all-time favourite: I would love to see her perform live.

Dresses or jeans?

Mostly dresses but, on some days, jeans and a casual tee would be my choice..
