eginning with the cover, the April 2014 edition of Woman This Month is an issue of many firsts. Our first illustrated cover, designed by our creative director Maryam Toorani, reflects the bride of today and introduces you to one of our biggest annual features — weddings! In conjunction with the bridal special, we test the waters with our first lingerie feature. From what to wear to look flawless on your wedding day to best buys this season, Fernanda Langhammer has put together a number of interesting articles for you in this issue. The third ‘first’ is the introduction of Blips in Woman This Month. The three-step graphic below explains what you need to do to add a digital element to your reading experience. Flip over to our community page to view how this print-to-digital technology works and to watch our first video, which discusses migrant workers’ issues. In this issue, Simi Kamboj speaks to Anna Thackray, who authored Bahrain’s first graphic novel — the first of a trilogy. Also, our fashion correspondents in New York and Milan take Woman This Month to respective Fashion Weeks for the very first time. Happy reading!

predictable trend, flowers are an inspiration for this year’s Spring/ Summer collections. The natural element is almost mandatory this time of the year. Few changes here and there make all the difference. Many brands have decided to add a jungle scene into the mix with foliage, leopards and zebras reigning over the current prints. The floral concept has expanded with the introduction of animal skin patterns. Some illustrations are done so well; you feel that they belong together. Blumarine and l’Wren Scott went towards the girly side with soft hues and the flower and butterfly duo. The tropical vibe took over the catwalk at Just Cavalli. Girls, get savage!

WTM: How did your folks react to these developments? DH: They were really happy and excited for me since they knew how badly I wanted to do this. It was early 2007 and they came to watch me practise at the airfield. Of course, they do worry like all parents worry, but they know that this is my dream come true.

Fashion galore I always wait for your fashion editions and I was definitely not disappointed by the spring summer special. My favourites were origami and pleats. I’m not a fan of prints. These styles help me adopt new trends without leaving my comfort zone. I don’t wear skirts or dresses. I wish you could one day do an article on how to get creative with denims and trousers. I have tried several things, but end up looking like I’m wearing the same clothes every day. I’m only five feet tall and pear-shaped. It would be great if you

Speak out Like Dr Clare says, babbling sure is beautiful. I would know because my son did not speak until he was five. It was really touching to read about the benefits that learning to speak at such a young age. Knowing that my son was deprived of these gifts that are often taken for granted was unsettling. I request all parents to take a moment to cherish the little blessings. You might not understand what they’re saying. Talk to them anyway. Khulood

WTM: What’s the most difficult part about your job? DH: Well, things can get rough when you’re flying at an altitude of over 1,000 feet. The wind pressure sometimes forces snot or drool to trickle down your face or your hair comes undone during a performance. When it rains, you perform with the raindrops stinging your face. In England, there can be long days when it rains all day and you’ll have to wring the water out of your socks when you’ve finished!

WTM: What are the physical and mental attributes essential in this job? DH: You need to be physically strong and flexible. You also need to be petite in order to be able to spin around the harness with ease. Here comes the sun I have been known for wearing loud colours. Yet I haven’t worn the loudest of them all — yellow! I am convinced that yellow does not complement my skin tone. I have a brown complexion. I had tried several shades and never found one that works for me. Your “Hello Yellow” page makes me want to try again. I hope this time I get lucky and find the right shade. Wannabe Big Bird. Sky high Reading about wing walking as a profession really opened my eyes about the many unusual jobs in the world that we do not as much as consider when we choose our careers. Interestingly, I had tried wing walking once. It was a terrifying experience as I have a fear of heights, but the whole point was to fight the phobia. I can’t say I’m cured, but I had never thought of the man who had assisted me that day. That was his profession. I hope that I can bring up my daughter with the freedom to choose any career path that interests her. Janine

et inspired by the big bright sun when you dress up for warmer days. Just as navy blue represents the winter mood, yellow reflects the cheery summer vibe. This vibrant shade easily contrasts with other rainbow colours, spicing up any combination you have in mind. A total look in yellow would only work if you play with different shades. A single yellow piece to brighten up your look is a stylish trick that is worth a try. Ladies with fair skin and blonde hair should avoid the hue from head to toe. That being said, it’s nothing that a good tan couldn’t solve. Most brands picked an intense tone for their collections. Ralph Lauren and Paul Smith used yellow as the main feature in simple and classic attire. Lanvin and Roksanda Ilincic opted for volume and different cuts.

withstanding wind speeds of up to 240km/h and a G force of up to four when they’re performing in air. On the mental front, you have to be sensible, organised and methodical, with a presence of mind. WTM: Which was your most memorable flying performance? DH: Climbing out of the cockpit onto the wing during flight is a tricky manoeuvre. It requires a lot of physical strength. You are working against a 100miles/hour wind speed as the plane moves through the air. The first time I did this, the experience was like climbing a tree in the middle of a hurricane. I was so proud and thrilled that I phoned up my dad after the performance to tell him. WTM: Who are your idols? DH: I’ve always admired women in aviation, especially the fighter pilots. Jules Thurston of the Royal Air Force was one of the best Hawk display pilots ever. She proved that you could be lovely and feminine even when you were flying a fighter aircraft. Then, there was Helen Tempest who performed as a wing walker for almost two decades. I remember watching her perform at air shows when I was a child.

WTM: There must be plenty of men out there who envy your job. DH: I have to admit it’s quite cool to be seen performing stunts mid-air as we do. It’s like being on a rollercoaster and the adrenaline rush is incomparable. Also, it’s nice to be able to represent women in aviation. Meeting people after the show is very heartening. WTM: Exactly how dangerous is your job? DH: See, there’s an element of danger in all flights. The logic is simple: what goes up must come down. Having said that, at Breitling, we have a 100 percent track record for safety. Our founder Vic Norman is a veteran pilot with decades of flying experience behind him. Then, we have fulltime engineers who are proficient at their jobs. So I’d say we’re in very good hands. WTM: What’s your ultimate ambition in life? DH: I want to improve my wing walking technique. I’d like to go between the wings. It’s something I haven’t done so far and takes years to perfect. I got my pilot’s licence in 2008. So hopefully, I will remain associated with flying for a long time to come. I also want to be more proficient in playing the guitar.g March 2014

Katie Holmes

GUCCI

This new collection showcased contemporary elegance with a unique interpretation of classic British tweeds and tartans.

This show saw an explosion of pastel colours, iconic symbols on boots and classic black for the evenings.

BVLGARI

The eternal beauty of Rome is the central character of Bulgari’s 2014 autumn/winter collection. The Italian luxury brand celebrates its 130th anniversary with a double event in Milan. During a formal presentation, I got to see the refined details of the new line of bags. In the evening, I participated in an event held for VIPs in the Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, an amazing location in the heart of the Milan.

FENDI

Black and brown in addition to bits of white and pink were the main hues at Fendi’s show. It started with Cara Delevingne walking down with Fendi’s new meme, Bag Boy Karlito, on one hand. This was a tribute to Karl Lagerfeld.

FASHION

WTM in New York by GIANNE MIDDLETON

The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2014 definitely heated up New York City despite the arctic weather and bout of snowstorms. Dedicated fashionistas braved the blizzard to attend the spectacular shows.

February 13, 11am Ralph Lauren at St John’s Centre Studios

February 8, 10am Lacoste at The Theatre

The week started off right with a high-energy runway performance by models showcasing Lacoste’s Autumn/Winter 2014 collection. Portuguese designer Felipe Oliveira Baptista — who was previously a designer for household brands, such as MaxMara, Christophe Lemaire, and Cerruti — helped support New York Fashion Week’s reputation as the biggest festival in the city. Celebrities such as The Jonas Brothers lined the front row to view the abstract portraitesque clothing. The collection was inspired by a series of images the creative director recreated following his visit to the Basque region in France. Centred upon the effortless and timeless elegance of Chantaco, a golf course built in the late 1920’s by Rene Lacoste’s father-inlaw, Baptista integrated its relaxed feel to this year’s urban collection. The models’ long, lean frames beautifully held the wardrobe of oversized coats, dark sweatshirts, hooded jackets and sporty jacket pantsuits. www.womanthismonth.com

New York Fashion Week’s final day included a bevy of beautiful designer pieces, proving that the best is always saved for last. With yet another blizzard having engulfed the city the previous night, I ploughed on (literally) through the harsh sleet to enter the sneakily hidden studio show location in Downtown New York. The audience was in for a treat as Ralph Lauren showcased not one, but two autumn/ winter 2014 collections. The inside of the studio was adorned with ornately tiered chandeliers and cream side benches with a flawless silk white sheet that draped over the runway. As the lights dimmed, an aura of anticipation invaded the room. The show was divided into two distinct parts — the new Polo Casual Collection for women and the more formal Ralph Lauren Collection. Aimed towards younger females, a preppy bohemian chic theme was embedded with paisley and floral prints, vibrant colours, laidback chequered shirts and tweed cardigans. Other styles included the cowgirl theme, consisting of fringed jackets and geometric south-western patterns. The Ralph Lauren collection incorporated modern glamorous wear. Models donned sleek chequered pants, a mix of ruffle and pin skirts, striped suits and diva-esque fur coats. Cashmere sweaters, oversized trench coats and chunky turtleneck necklaces all promoted the “keep warm, chic and carry on” theme. The climax of the show was a glimpse at slinky evening gowns that effortlessly hung off the models silhouettes in pink, ivory and pearly grey hues. Needless to say, Ralph Lauren received a standing ovation from all members in attendance.

February 13, 5pm Art Hearts Fashion at The Theatre

The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week’s Closing Show did not disappoint. The facetious comment that fashion does have a heart perfectly summed up the artistic cultural display of established and upcoming designers. Art Hearts Fashion was presented in collaboration with AIDS Healthcare Foundation. A perfect link between fashion and philanthropy was created as the Italian style of FTL Moda was presented in a grandiose way. The show highlighted how the disease is still prevalent globally as well as embedded within the fabric of every industry. My personal favourite pieces from the show included Kokler’s offering of a crisp leather jacket draped over silk leather pants, and Silkskin’s collection that introduced an edgy look of motorcycle jackets, dark trench coats and leather driving gloves — evoking a true feeling of girl power. The Awakening of an

Artist

by SIMI KAMBOJ

Professional artist Anna Thackray loves a good story. However, it was Bahrain that unleashed her creative spirit, taking her on an incredible journey that spawned a trilogy of graphic novels.

A

nna Thackray is basking in the success of her graphic novel, The Awakening of Shamal, which was released in February. The Brit, who was trained in fine arts at Southampton University, has lived in many countries and her art is an amalgamation of these cultures. To research her Bahrain-based trilogy, Anna visited forts, viewed exhibits at Bahrain National Museum and photographed Bahrain from north to south. She listened to stories about old Bahrain, whether it was from poets or taxi drivers. An introvert, Anna loves the flexibility that storytelling provides her and the freedom to live many lives all at once. She tells us what went into the making of The Awakening of Shamal.

Dreams of Clay by SIMI KAMBOJ

Egyptian artist Dina Okba was born with a creative streak. Whether it’s cookery classes or cold porcelain miniatures, food remains an integral part of her creations.

D

ina Okba likes to play with clay. At her Janabiya studio, you will find neat little trays of miniature cupcakes, doughnuts, pizzas, pastas, Chinese dishes and sorbets that look good enough to eat — except that they are not. These artefacts are Dina’s creations made out of cold porcelain. A mother-of-two, Dina has always been an enterprising person. The American Women’s Association member runs cookery classes specialising in Indian, Pakistani and Arabic dishes. That possibly explains her fetish for food miniatures. Dina tells us why her fingers can’t stop playing with dough. Woman This Month (WTM): How did you venture into this hobby? Dina Okba (DO): My passion for miniatures started long ago when I visited Thailand as a little girl. I saw these beautiful miniatures and loved the concept. I’ve wanted to experiment with porcelain for years, and finally got down to doing it when I came to Bahrain in 2003. WTM: What techniques and ingredients do you use for your creations? DO: I use a kind of homemade dough prepared from corn starch, white glue, water and oil. I prepare it and store it in a plastic bag for use the next day. I use different kinds of tools from home as well as from craft shops for my work. I also use two other kinds of dough — salt ceramic and polymer clay — depending on what I’m making and the design.

42 April 2014

WTM: Do you have any plans to turn this hobby into a career or business? DO: I’ve started advertising my creations on my Instagram and Facebook pages. I also run porcelain workshops at my studio. I now make personalised gift items for clients and am planning to open an online store soon. WTM: What’s the most challenging part of your work? DO: I think the challenge lies in making my creations as close to life as possible. WTM: Some of your miniatures are very finely detailed. How long does it take to make an entire food tray? DO: The intricately done food trays with assorted dishes take over two days’ work since they involve multiple stages in cooking and drying the clay.

WTM: What do you find most enjoyable about this craft? DO: Cold porcelain is a very versatile, nontoxic material that’s easy to work with. It doesn’t need to be fired up. You can simply air dry it. I’m always looking for new challenges, trying to make things look as real as possible. I find this pastime very relaxing during times of stress or hardship. It’s almost therapeutic. WTM: What is your ultimate dream in life? DO: I really care about my work and all its minute details. My dream in life is to be recognised for my creations. The Winning Smile by SIMI KAMBOJ

T

Every tooth has a heart and it’s the job of a cosmetic dentist to keep that heart young and beating, believes Dr Rim Bogari.

here’s no denying that a pleasing smile is an attractive quality that lures people to us. A smile often conveys confident, optimistic and friendly vibes without the person having to speak a word. Having studied and trained in Germany, Dr Rim Bogari believes she has the best job in the world. The managing director of Ceram Dental Clinic, she is in the business of giving people glamorous smiles. Woman This Month (WTM): Did you always aspire to be a dental specialist? Dr Rim Bogari (RB): Not really. My dream as a young girl was to become an artist or a designer. My ambition was to design clothes or jewellery, but my parents were insistent on me going into medicine and so I did. After years of hard work in Germany, I started to feel that dentistry, especially cosmetic dentistry, involves a lot of art. This got me more involved and I started to develop a passion for cosmetic dentistry. Changing someone’s smile is not just a technical job. You need to have an eye for beauty to be able to transform a normal smile into a glamorous one! WTM: How are teeth related to facial aesthetics? In other words, what makes a smile beautiful? RB: In cosmetic dentistry, there are smile design principles that make a smile beautiful.

44 April 2014

These include facial aesthetics and gingival aesthetics which deal with gums. Microaesthetics has to do with what your teeth should look like. Macro-aesthetics involves your teeth along with the surrounding area. A wonderful smile also comprises lips, the midline and smile lines, all of which need to be properly analysed for a perfect smile. WTM: Which dental procedures do you specialise in? RB: It’s in cosmetic dentistry that I found myself. Through experience, I discovered that this is really what I do best and I’ll continue in that direction. WTM: Cosmetic dentistry has obviously progressed very far in recent years. Is there anything that isn’t possible in your field these days? RB: Well, it certainly has room for development like any other specialised field.

I think that it will advance further because of the high demand and rising awareness among patients about their looks. WTM: What motivates you to work? RB: What better motivation exists than seeing the reaction of a patient, who has just transformed his/her teeth from ‘normal’ to ‘beautiful’? The joy of a patient looking into the mirror and seeing his/her new self gives me the motivation and pleasure to continue what I’m doing. WTM: What is your ultimate ambition in life? RB: I want to be one of the leading cosmetic dentists in the world. I believe my abilities as well as my solid educational background will empower me to reach my goals in life. I love my work and that’s really all you need to reach your aim — along with a glamorous smile! www.womanthismonth.com

Losing to Gain by Fernanda Langhammer

To get in shape is one item that every girl wants to check off from her list of resolutions. So we ask experts across Bahrain on what can be your best bet.

H

ow many times have you heard yourself, a best friend or colleague complain about the last few kilos that can’t be shed? Most of us don’t aim to become skinny. We just want to fit in an old pair of jeans or feel comfortable in our skin. There are many ways to go about weight loss. You need to find a programme which suits your routine, so that you can follow it with discipline. One thing I know for a fact is that there are no miracles. No matter what, you must combine exercise and a healthy diet. The good thing is that you can vary the type of training and menu. So roll up your sleeves and start planning your move towards fitness.

Fast track

For a quick result, you must set a goal and follow the path towards it diligently! “If you want rapid weight loss, then a circuit training programme would be your best option,” says Joey Navarro, recreation manager of Sheraton Bahrain Hotel. This helps to improve mobility, strength and stamina. Each workout has a specific number of repetitions before moving to the next one. The resting time within a movement is usually very short. Intervals are a bit longer between different exercises. This kind of programme is effective because it can be tailor-made to suit each person, taking objectives and performance into consideration.

48 April 2014

On the plate

We all know that radical diets are not a solution. First of all, you can’t keep a restricted diet for a long period. Secondly, it is not good for your health. Food re-education is what we need. A balanced diet consists of the three major food groups. “On average, we should consume 50 percent carbohydrates, 20 percent protein and 30 percent fat daily,” explains Dr Aysha Salem Al Meftah from Hypoxi. Foods that are high in fibre, like vegetables and salads, plus seven to eight servings of fruits per day is equally important. However, accordingly to Dr Al Meftah, there is no specific standard diet to lose weight. So an appointment with a nutritionist to plan a healthier eating regime would be the best move to reach your specific goals.

Keep it up

The tricky part is to maintain focus. In the beginning, everyone is motivated. You need to stay strong with time. “To succeed, you must focus on four fundamental concepts: your mindset, nutrition, movement and recovery,” Navarro notes. Having them aligned to your training plan is the key to success. You also need to set short-term achievable goals. Seek a new one when the first has been achieved until you finally reach your target. After this, it is a matter of maintaining the result. Fortunately, by then you probably cannot picture your life without exercise. It will become a habit. www.womanthismonth.com

Tried and Tested

This month, my beauty radar took me to a weight loss and body designing centre — Hypoxi. Present in 40 countries, this programme is used by celebrities like Madonna and Cheryl Cole to maintain their shapely bodies. So I was curious! The first impression, I have to confess, was that it all looks a bit scary. You find strange machines with tubes connecting you to a vacuum system (something you’d expect to see in the Matrix trilogy). However, after you give it a try, you get used to the setting. You can actually relax and enjoy the peaceful environment. The calming scent and relaxing music help as well. Understanding that a lot of research and technology has gone behind the making of this programme kind of makes you feel special. Hypoxi incorporates exercise using a vacuum method. It stimulates blood circulation, accelerates fat metabolism and improves the texture of the skin. I tried two different machines — the bicycle and the skin toning body suit (which I fell in love with). My bottom half is my problem area, so they created a specific plan for me. I tried the methods for a total of three days in a week, alongside jogging for 40 minutes on the treadmill on the programme-free days. I also avoided fast food and other nonnutritional snacks. At the end of the week, I was very proud of myself for having the discipline to follow the plan and I was amazed by the results. I wasn’t sure if I would see a difference, but frankly it was a lot more than I was expecting. My glutes were firmer and the skin looked much better. I believe that combining the two machines and following the advice of the Hypoxi trainers to workout on off days helped with the results. I see it as a great addition to your exercise routine. I’m ready for more!

Your Questions Answered

Q

: Is there a way to make my make-up last longer on my skin?

A: If you’re using a cream-based product, like lipstick or foundation, remember to apply a dry face powder on top to seal it. The powder will keep the make-up in the right place. This is a good trick for blushers, which are often the first to vanish. You can apply a creamy version before you top it with a dry blush. For lip colours, a coat of fine, translucent powder applied between two layers of lipstick would do the work.

Q

: I’d like to hide my aged skin. Do you have any good tricks?

A: Make-up is the best way to hide any imperfection in your complexion. However, the saying that the older you get, the more make-up you should add is not true. Packing your face with all sorts of beauty products can actually make you look older. There is one make-up item that you should never skip in your regime — the foundation. The right one will help you achieve good looking skin. Without this magic tool, the skin tone is dull in places and shiny in others. A good foundation provides a translucent finish and youthful glow, not a cracking mask, to correct issues and liven up the skin. Finding the perfect one may be a difficult task, but don’t give up on the search. How do you know you’ve found it? The perfect foundation must be easy to spread and blend with your skin tone, and you should feel comfortable with it on your skin.

I make it less prominent?

Naya Rivera

Our fashion and beauty editor will answer all your queries every month. Write to her at fashionandbeauty@rhm.bh for more tips and tricks.

Q: My nose is too big. How do A: Some features on your face that you think is your biggest flaw can transform with the years and maybe even become your favourite. So, if are young, give it a few years before getting a nose job. Meanwhile, downplay your nose with make-up. A few sweeps of bronzer and a highlighting pen, you can trick the eye. Dip a brush into a bronzer or brown eye shadow and draw a line on either sides of the bridge of your nose. Blend it well. Apply the highlighter pen or powder along the bridge of your nose, illuminating the area. Blend it well so the lines aren’t obvious. Driving attention to your eyes is another way to play down your nose. www.womanthismonth.com

Bridal Gown Trends After meticulously scanning through various bridal shows across the globe, here are the gown trends that we think will make the groom’s heart skip a beat.

Whether it’s the use of beads or threedimensional flowers, a little extra is well received this season.

Lace Sleeves

There’s no way you can go wrong with lace. But who doesn’t already know that? To stay on trend, just go with lace sleeves. Thank you Kate Middleton!

56 April 2014

Clichéd as it may sound, nothing beats this simplistic theme. Sleek and modern gowns are clean and romantic.

For those brides who would like a bit of colour on their wedding gown, without having to commit to a whole colour like Kaley Cuoco did, the ombre trend is the way to go.

Back in Style

Keyholes, trains, pleats — you name it and it was on the runway this season. Add drama to your gown with details on the back, like graphics, lace or crystals.

Layer after Layer

You couldn’t miss Vera Wang’s black leather gloves from a mile. However, we prefer the more subtle hints of black that several brands used this year from simple accessories like slim belts to black appliqué.

Heidi Elnora

At the Ankle

Nothing is more French-chic than an ankle-length hemline. The 50's syle is a playful alternative to the usual ball gown.

Summer might not sound like the season to be piling on layers, but the runways could not get enough of the trend. Do it right and you might be able to pull it off!

Ines DiSanto

Upto the Knees

The bride who does not intend to get off the dance floor could choose to rock a short wedding dress. Keep the hemline at the knees for a refined look. Add glamour to the otherwise casual theme with striking necklines, draped tulle and lace.

WEDDING | 10 tips

Plan the Perfect Honeymoon The most compatible couple will be exhausted, emotionally if not physically, after planning the simplest wedding. Your honeymoon is your escape from stress. These tips will help you keep planning this stage completely hassle-free.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 62 April 2014

Pick a spot As adventurous as the concept of throwing a dart on a map may sound, this is not the time to be spontaneous. You don’t want to celebrate your love drenched in a rainforest or scorched in a desert. Find a place that you both can enjoy, both alone and together. If you’ve ever had a dream destination on your bucket list, this is your chance to get there. Stay entertained Newlyweds have felt cheated by honeymoon packages, which left them seeing nothing and doing much less. Your honeymoon is still a holiday. You want to wake up when you feel like it, go where your feet take you and you would like to stay idle or busy depending on your mood. So plan your activities together for lazy and lively days. A surprise element This might not be the best marriage advice, but you don’t need to share everything. Nothing beats a good surprise. Treat your partner to an unexpected spa day or book your last night’s stay in a luxury hotel. You could even sneak in a short cruise. Travel smart You’ll be returning with souvenirs. Pack light. You don’t want to be occupied with work or stay hooked onto the screen. So leave your laptop behind. Wedding and engagement rings tend to get lost on honeymoons; keep them in a safe. Make sure you’ve some kind of paperwork at hand that proves you’re a couple. Something new You could be talking to someone about your honeymoon even when you’re 80 and have forgotten what you had for breakfast. Make the story worth hearing. Learn something new while on holiday. It could be something as simple as a dance or cooking class.

www.womanthismonth.com

6.

Ask for help This is what makes The Amazing Race so entertaining. Couples find out so much about each other while travelling. Don’t let your ego get the best of you. If you’re lost, ask for directions. If you’re out of ideas, ask hotel staff or other tourists. If you’re utterly clueless from the start, let a travel agent help you plan.

7.

It’s no secret Your honeymoon is one thing you don’t want to keep a secret. You will be surprised by the number of freebies that come your way. Have a sign hanging from your neck if that’s what it takes to get a free drink! No one’s judging.

8. 9. 10. www.womanthismonth.com

Know your budget Once you’ve tied the knot, it’s important to understand each other on a financial ground as well. It is vital that you discuss how much money you want to be spending on the holiday. Remember, there’s life beyond the honeymoon. Indulge without guilt You’ve spent months counting calories and running for miles. Dive into every meal; there’s no room for guilt. Come back soon No, we don’t mean spending a weekend on the road and calling it a honeymoon. You need time to recuperate at home before you head back to work. Return from your holiday at least a day or two before the office expects to see you at your desk.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by ANKITA MAMGAIN

I for one do not endorse the idea of ‘independence lost’ when you slip that ring on; however taking a trip with my girlfriends is a welcome idea any day, especially if it’s a hen getaway. Here are some ways you can celebrate your remaining days of singledom with your gals.

I Heart New York f you hear smooth jazz when you as much as see a NYC post card, you know you’re a Manhattan kinda girl. And it doesn’t get more ‘single gal central’ than New York. Think Carrie Bradshaw. (If the name doesn’t ring a bell, we have a problem!) She and her single friends have painted a glorious picture of an urban jungle, where possibilities are endless, style and fashion are paramount, and great shoes are indispensable. Let’s not forget the idea of Mr Big that reduces all Mills and Boon heroes to mere wannabes. You’ll have a lot to do — from shopping together and watching Broadway musicals to visiting restaurants and clubs that could only exist in The Big Apple and spending time in Central Park. Do not miss the Sex and The City bus tour. They even go past Carrie’s apartment!

I

A Continental Escape he perfect time to evoke that secret pact with your buddies to hit the road once you’ve all saved up enough is when one of you is about to step out of Singleville. The perfect destination? Europe! Make sure you carry minimum baggage. You’ll be backpacking with frequent stopovers and you’re going to have extra luggage on your flight back. Start this journey from London, traversing the fashion district. Don’t miss the night clubs and numerous cultural sites. The next stop is Paris, which is a train journey away from King’s Cross Station. Once you hit mainland Europe, the most fun way to travel would be to hire a car, get a map and cruise along these quaint countries that are full of scenic beauty, immensely rich heritage and culinary wonders that you’ve only read about. A suggestion — as much as you’d like to go with the flow, get an itinerary in order and set aside at least two weeks if not more for this holiday.

T

Sun and Sand Senoritas f surf and sunshine is what works for you and your girls, then head to the glamorous seaside haven of Los Cabos. This world-class travel destination lies at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, with a 20-mile stretch of beaches and luxurious resorts that connects them. A favourite amongst Hollywood bigwigs, its laid-back nightlife scenario and old-fashioned fun in the sun are the main lure. An ‘all girls’ holiday is a special occasion, calling for a fabulous hotel; there are many in this paradise. Explore the region’s two dramatically distinct personas. Tranquil San Jose del Cabo retains the look and vibe of an authentic Mexican town. Rambunctious Cabo San Lucas, on the other end of the highway is party central with funky bars. Make sure to get a few group pictures wearing local attire or at least a sombrero!

You’re the Man! Grooms can knock one of the bride’s underlying fears out of the ballpark by looking like a million bucks on the wedding day. Here’s how.

G

entlemen’s Lounge provides some insight into how grooms can get groomed, in respect to your handsome face and your full head of hair. (If you don’t have hair, then that’s one less thing to worry about!)

The Groom’s Do

Gentlemen’s Lounge has experience in getting grooms ready on the day of the wedding. Go there. Tell them what you are looking for. They will give you a perfect amount of time to get that butchered hair of yours up to snuff. Consistent cutting by the same stylist will sort out cuts that will show on photos. Have your final pre-wedding haircut no later than two weeks prior to the wedding day. Two weeks is just enough time for the groom’s hair to look fresh, but not too fresh to show any mistakes.

The Groom’s Mug

In the week before the wedding, things get really busy. You want to avoid breaking out, like the high school weakling you left behind. A trip to the spa section at Gentlemen’s Lounge can ensure that your skin will look its best. This will probably mean a facial treatment to cleanse, remove any dead skin and get rid of any unsightly blackheads or blemishes. If you’re thinking “A what now?”, then you should know that facials aren’t just for women. Please ensure that it is done no later than three days before the wedding day as the treatment can leave some redness for upto a day or two.

A Professional Shave

If it’s still a bit much for you to waltz into a spa to get a facial, you can certainly treat yourself to a professional shave. Once you try it, you might be hooked. Visit The Gentlemen’s Lounge by Topcut at The Lagoon in Amwaj Islands. Call 16 031-126.

Test to Testimony L

We often think of the planning stage of a wedding. For this event management company, however, the best part is the feedback.

eaves Wedding is an event management company which considers every wedding unique. You never need to worry about your big day looking like something out of a brochure if you’ve hired this team to do the job. “Whenever we sit with our client, our main objective is to tailor a design that would best describe their personality,” says Garry Taganas, manager at Leaves. “That is the real test, which requires us to extract all our creative juices and come up with the winning idea.” When a bride comes with a vision of how her wedding should be, it is much easier for the team to plan the event along with their creative input. This is helpful as it gives them the boundaries within which they need to work, in terms of design and budget. It is only once this is finalised that tasks like visualisation and implementation come in. “We get to see the result in our days of

www.womanthismonth.com

hard work when we receive a good testimony from our clients. This is what really pays off and uplifts our spirits,” Garry adds. One bride said: “I just wanted to thank you for your effort and great work. Everything turned out very well; the layout was perfect. The colours, flowers, the bar — everything went very well with the lighting and the venue.” Another couple said: “The guests felt very comfortable. There was more than enough space for everyone to relax, but also feel together. The giveaways were done very well.” The Leaves team has been known to have great taste and are incredibly easy to work with. To turn your wedding into what you’ve always envisioned, give them a try so you can one day give them your testimony. Call 17 599-055 or visit www.leavesbahrain.com.

Sweet Secrets 2. 1. Aside from choosing the dress of your dreams for the big day, make sure you carefully choose the lingerie to go with it. Here’s how you can be sure you won’t go wrong.

Bare Shoulders

Oysho

Lately, the most wanted wedding dress is the strapless princess gown. They usually come with added support in the chest area. However if it is made using a thin fabric, like satin or chiffon, then it is difficult to embed anything. In this case, the best solution is to wear a plain strapless bra. Go for those without any embroidery or lace.

Bouxavenue

Matalan

Feminine Simplicity

If your dress gives you the freedom of wearing any kind of lingerie, select the one you feel most comfortable and pretty in. A white cotton set can be snug and girly; a few additional details will add to the elegance. It is, after all, your wedding day.

3.

Out of Sight

4.

Tight dresses must be paired with minimum underwear. If your gown will define your bottom half, choose thongs in thin lace or any fine material. The fewer the layers, the more you will be able to move around without worrying.

If your wedding dress asks for a thin silhouette, opt for high-waist lingerie. This way you hide extra undesirable bumps, shaping the cut. If your dress is made of thick material or has layers of embroidery go for something with girly patterns.

5.

Nayomi

Simple Be

Hourglass Figure

Plunging neckline

Some girls can’t go without enhancing cleavage. Deep necklines demand an invisible bra, which unfortunately don’t exist. A solution is the bra with a transparent strap that connects the two cups. Pick a simple piece in a natural colour to get the most invisibility possible. www.womanthismonth.com

Get Your Groove On

by BEHNAZ SANJANA

Are there days when the sight of the treadmill makes you cringe and the very thought of a strenuous workout makes you want to wail? When it gets tough to keep your eye on the fitness prize, you simply need to change tracks.

O

k, so you’re a fitness freak. But day after day, the same exercise equipment and regime can rouse boredom in the best of us. Exercise bounds to get monotonous over time and is the leading reason why people do not stay committed to their fitness goals. Enter ‘dancercise’! Dancing is a form of physical activity that uses almost every part of the body, offering a complete workout. You can choose a dance form to match your preferred pace and goal. Moving to music gets the endorphins rushing, thereby boosting memory, intelligence and making for a more sociable outlook. Whatever your size or shape, hop onto the dance bandwagon to get moving and keep fit. Anybody can take up ‘dancercise’. Minor physical ailments can be worked around under the supervision of an experienced instructor. And no, there’s no pressure to move like Jagger.

Battle the Bulge Bollywood Style

Our Expert: Stephen Anthony, Choreographer at Bollywood Steps Bahrain’s cinema halls are not the only proof of the Middle East being great fans of Indian cinema and music. Walk into any Bollywood dance and fitness class to see students from various backgrounds spin to catchy, foottapping numbers. A typical dance session stretches, flexes and works the entire body, along with getting the

74 April 2014

heart pumping and pulse racing. Stephen strongly recommends a fast-paced, intense dance workout for aiding and maintaining weight loss. “Women exercise and diet to shed weight, but that’s difficult to maintain,” he says. “A fast, fun workout like this one doesn’t need much convincing and helps you stay in shape.” The greatest advantage, Stephen cites, is that due to the music and dance steps being changed every three classes, there is no danger of repetition. Add to that the thrill of emulating Bollywood divas. This form of exercise is exciting and thoroughly satiating. Stephen and his co-choreographer Deepakshi hold classes for children, where young ones can be lured from their couches to get moving in a safe, enjoyable environment. Their classes for mums and children are well received, where they can laugh and bond over some amusing steps.

Shimmy to Raqs Sharqi

Our Expert: Khadejah El-Oueslati, International Performer and Instructor Raqs Sharqi is the original name for what is broadly called ‘belly dancing’. Translated from Arabic, it means ‘Dance of the Orient’ and has caught on as a popular form of exercise these days. As intriguing as the history of Raqs Sharqi is how it can aid the female body when done regularly. “To dance well, posture is important. You need to know how to stand up straight,” says Khadejah, who has been a student and teacher of this ethnic dance form for years. Students learn to lift their chests so that the weight of the torso does not sit on the hips. She assesses and corrects a student’s posture before diving into the dance. “It’s very important that they understand isolation,” she says. Students need to recognise the movements of individual body parts and to separate the upper body from the lower half, as the dance form entails isolated movements of the neck, torso, hips and knees. The dance involves using muscles in the body that people are normally oblivious of. “It’s fascinating to realise that your body can move in such a way. Practice makes perfect,” she adds. All styles of Raqs Sharqi use the hands and arms a lot, strengthening the shoulders as a result. All in all, this dance form is a complete cardiovascular workout, not just for the belly. www.womanthismonth.com

“For fitness purposes, muscle memory is important. You have to keep repeating a movement in order to master it,” says Khadejah. Her ‘strictly ladies only’ sessions leave students with improved endurance, flexibility, coordination and balance. Interestingly, this dance form when done over a period of time is believed to facilitate easy childbirth and ease menstrual cramping. The psychological advantages of this danceexercise are remarkable. Belly dancing is all about freedom of expression and building confidence. The sensual hip-throws and elegant movements make women feel more feminine. As Khadejah puts it, “Everyone leaves feeling great about themselves.”

the Latino Way

Our expert: Amed Yazzin Ramirez Campos, Fitness Trainer While Zumba has lately taken the fitness world by storm, Latin freestyle dance is different, in the sense that it is more of dance, than repetitive exercise. The aptly named ‘Latin Mix’ is an incorporation of various dance forms from the Latin quarters of the world, where Amed hails from. “My sessions are a bit of merengue, salsa, bachata, cha cha and reggaeton,” says Amed. His students often request him to make them sweat it out on popular hits, which may not necessarily be Latino, but Amed happily adapts the original Latin freestyle dance to new and popular rhythms.

Interestingly, this dance form when done over a period of time is believed to facilitate easy childbirth After a dance warm-up, ladies get to move their bodies to the beats of the Cajon, a Peruvian percussion instrument, lending an interesting element to his session. This exercise routine is ideal for those who dream of owning washboard abs. “People attend my classes to shape their bodies,” Amed says. He guarantees that over time, this dance form primarily has stunning effects on one’s abs. It is beneficial for shaping and toning the waist and hips. A very intense one-hour session of pure dance can burn upto 600 calories. Amed believes that it is a highly effective stress buster. “When the ladies are here, they concentrate on the music and the steps. They forget about their problems outside the class,” he says. This naturally helps to tackle day-to-day issues better. Moreover, the risqué element of Latino dance makes the session a lively and fun workout, making ladies eagerly look forward to the next dance workout. g April 2014

The Art of Living

Farheen Ahmed gives us a peek into her experience at the International Women’s Conference held in Bangalore in February.

M

any of us have mulled over the buzz that surrounds meditation at some point in our lives. We have wondered if it can really perform the miracle of uplifting us from our lives to make us better, happier and peaceful human beings. Does meditation really enrich and enlighten individuals in a way that it helps us balance our work and day-to-day activities? If you are a sceptic like I used to be, then all you have to do is turn around to see what is in your life. You’ll see the ‘little’ stresses of life, such as tight deadlines, road rage, unreasonable people, insecurities, unpaid bills, things to do and children’s wellbeing — all of which dance in tandem.

A window into inner calmness

I looked for a way to find peace. Not that I had not been prescribed meditation by well-meaning friends and family. It seemed like I usually ran out of steam. I felt that meditation needed time that I did not have.

76 April 2014

One fine morning I received an invitation to attend the sixth International Women’s Conference in Bangalore to learn things which are often read, heard, advised and rarely followed through. I arrived at The Art of Living International Centre, along with 13 other women, with mixed emotions. I wondered if it would be a whole new ‘me’, who would be flying back after the conference was over. After all, it is just meditation. It has been around for ages. How much could have really changed? I would soon see that it was not ‘just meditation’. It is a concept, a journey, a way of life and an art of living — one that you learn and put into practice. It is a tool to help you take charge and find your nirvana. www.womanthismonth.com

At the conference

Power-packed panel

The Art of Living was founded in 1984 by the spiritual leader His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. The bi-annual conference, comprising 800 delegates from 59 countries, focused on bringing together an interesting mix of women. These women have not only positively transformed their own lives and careers, but have also extended that positive transformation to their surrounding environment and people. The personalities that took the stage includes HE Dr Husn Banu Ghazanfar, Minister of Women’s Affairs of Afghanistan; Vimla Mehra, the Director-General of Tihar Jail in India; and Rama Nair, Lecturer at Royal University for Women in Bahrain. Other celebrated women that made an appearance include Asha Bhosle, the renowned playback singer; Naida Glavish, the Maori Party President from New Zealand; Indian social activist Dr Kiran Bedi; and Israeli singer-actor Rita Yahan-Farouz.

www.womanthismonth.com

Held under the guidance of Bhanumati Narasimhan, the conference threw light on poignant issues, like female foeticide, gender inequality and domestic violence. Most significantly, valuable insights were rendered into the practice of meditation and yoga. Several cultural activities were held, including a scintillating dance-drama choreographed by Srividya Varchaswi. The prolific panel of speakers shared their stories of challenges. The informative and motivational talks shed light on how the Art of Living helped them review their thought process and make adjustments to tackle life in a positive way. They explained how meditation helps you to experience the difference between simply existing and truly living.

THE verdict

Is meditation an instant panacea for our daily problems? Not really. One has to first understand that serenity, inner peace and happiness are not acquired overnight, but are fruits of dedicated and continuous practice. Meditation helps rinse your soul and rejuvenate your spirit. It offers the subject a state of blissful calm that gets better over time. Hence, consistency is crucial! You need to move with a purpose towards achieving them. Aspects like meditation, yoga, exercise, regulated food intake and the desire to want a positive change must come together to help you attain your ultimate goal — nirvana. So my advice would be to steal a few minutes from your busy schedule every day, switch off from the noises in your mind and the world outside, and attempt to begin a journey of eternal calm and tranquillity.

Keyhole Surgery for Cysts We take a look at how a case of ovarian cysts was taken care of using a laparoscopic approach by this gynaecologist.

T

he Royal Bahrain Hospital (RBH) was presented with a case, where a woman with a history of pain in the abdomen had been diagnosed with a 12cm cyst (dermoid) in her ovary. The patient had been advised to undergo a conventional (open laparotomy) surgery to remove the cyst. Dr Kiran Bijlani, the consultant laparoscopic gynaecologist at the hospital, advised her that this cyst could be easily managed by a laparoscopic approach. It was explained to her that gynaecologic laparoscopy is an alternative to open surgery.

The method

A slender, lighted telescope is passed through small incisions, which allows a good view of the insides of the abdomen and pelvis. Open surgery, on the other hand, often requires a large incision. Laparoscopy can determine whether you have conditions, such as endometriosis or fibroids. It can also be a form of treatment. With miniaturised instruments, your doctor can perform a variety of surgeries, such as the removal of fibroids and ovarian cysts. Other procedures include tubal ligation

78 April 2014

(surgical contraception) and hysterectomy for benign and malignant pathologies.

The benefits

Laparoscopy generally has a shorter healing time than open surgery. It also leaves smaller scars. “The patient successfully underwent the laparoscopic removal of the dermoid cyst under general anaesthesia and is now recovering very well,” says Dr Kiran. “She was re-evaluated after a week and then after a month following her surgery. Her progress is good. She has returned to her routine activities, including walking on the treadmill. The patient was so thankful and satisfied that she underwent this modern surgery, rather than going through a long recovery period, pain and unwanted scars.”

Why RBH?

Dr Kiran explains that it has been possible to do complex and challenging gynaecological surgeries due to the availability of cuttingedge technology, including top-of-the-range MRI for diagnoses. Royal Bahrain Hospital has the latest laparoscopic equipment at hand, like harmonic scalpels and lasers. Above all, the hospital has the combined experience of a multidisciplinary team, consisting of Dr Stephen (general and bariatric surgery), Dr Narendra (general surgery) and Dr Ravi (urology and laser expert). Seeking Workers’ Rights

LEARN MORE ABOUT MIGRANT WORKERS PROTECTION SOCIETY (MWPS) CONNECT WITH MWPS

by SIMI KAMBOJ

The abuse faced by domestic workers comes to the fore this month following the rescue of a minor girl by the Migrant Workers Protection Society.

B

ahrain has over 70,000 migrant workers employed in private residences, many of who come here without any knowledge of the local language or the nature of their jobs. Once they grasp the reality of their situation, the Migrant Workers Protection Society (MWPS) is one of the few organisations whose support they can count on. The recent rescue of an Ethiopian girl, who was trafficked to Bahrain, highlights the illegal practices employed to send migrant workers to the region as well as the abusive conditions in private homes. The girl, who was only 15, arrived in Bahrain on a passport, which recorded her age as 25. “Her employer wasn’t happy with her work as she’d expected a 25-year-old and not a child,” explains Esky Girmay, MWPS assistant action committee head and Ethiopian community leader. “Over the next seven months, the employer made the girl work until 2am every day, beating her up when the work was unsatisfactory, and denying her food every other day as punishment.”

80 April 2014

The girl fled from her employer’s house and managed to contact members of the Ethiopian community, who took her to the local police. The MWPS then negotiated the girl’s release with her employer and repatriated her to Ethiopia in February. Perversely, despite her injuries, she can be considered ‘lucky’ as she managed to escape and be rescued. There are perhaps hundreds of people in similar or worse situations, who are less fortunate. MWPS chairperson Marietta Dias recalls incidents, where domestic workers have been blinded in one eye due to beating by the employer’s family. Domestic workers were brought under the purview of the labour law for the first time in 2012, but they aren’t covered by many of its provisions — especially those relating to hours of work and rest — which leads to abuse. “Women at our shelter report working for 17 hours a day on average. One woman, who was made to work 22 hours, had to be hospitalised and treated for asthma and exhaustion. She

fled her sponsor’s home after the family refused to get her medical treatment when she fell ill,” says Beverley Hamadeh, general secretary, MWPS. In 2013, the MWPS gave shelter to 156 abused domestic workers awaiting their cases to be resolved. Overwork, non-payment of salary, physical abuse and withholding of passport by sponsors are the main complaints. “Many sponsors don’t obtain the necessary documentation for their employees. This delays the settlement of their cases. We know of employers who haven’t got a resident permit for their domestic staff; nor a CPR card. Most workers who come to us don’t know if they have a CPR,” Marietta adds. MWPS provides translation services, advises workers and follows up on individual cases. It provides offers shelter to abused workers referred to them by the police, foreign embassies and the church. www.womanthismonth.com

Sitting — It’s Killing You

by DR CLARE BECKETT-MCINROY and CRAIG HESLOP

We’ve all been told about the dangers of sugar, fast food and poor sleeping patterns. Prolonged sitting might not sound like a game changer, but the reality is that it poses huge problems to your health.

82 April 2014

www.womanthismonth.com

D

r James Levine from the Mayo Clinic has stated, “Sitting is the new smoking.” Why is sitting so dangerous and how can we minimise its effects in our modern world? Sitting in itself is not an issue but the problem arises with uninterrupted prolonged sitting. The average American sits for over nine hours every day. We’re hedging a bet that Bahrain’s figures are not much better. In fact, we bet you are sitting right now! How long have you sat for today? The first issue with sitting is that it inhibits the release of an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase. This guy attaches himself to fat in the bloodstream and carries it to your muscles for fuel. If you or your child sits for a long time, then your body struggles to burn fat. Using America’s stats once again, we can see that the average child spends three hours watching television per day. When you combine this with computer time, we are looking at over five hours of ‘screen time’. That is a fifth of a child’s twenty-four day spent sitting in front of a screen! This becomes increasingly difficult to manage when the Middle East summer comes around. The benefits of a morning or evening walk in summer are priceless. Aside from the physical problems of excessive ‘screen time’, juniors are facing sleep problems and Vitamin D deficiencies. Let’s not forget the prospect of multinational food companies selling their www.womanthismonth.com

Walking is probably the most underestimated fitness activity you and your children can partake in

nutritionally-limp products to young eyes. Several studies have shown that sitting for six hours per day or more increases blood pressure, the risk of diabetes and rates of depression. People with sitting jobs have almost twice the rate of cardiovascular disease compared to those who are on the move. In a nutshell, we were never meant to sit for extended periods. Sitting down all day in the car, sofa, office, school, dinner table and gym is a recipe for disaster.

Combating our ‘sitting culture’ Dr Joan Vernikos, a former director at NASA wrote the book Sitting Kills, Moving Heals. She observed that astronauts, who returned from missions, aged remarkably in a short space of time. She put this down to prolonged sitting. Joan’s advice is to break up your sitting in frequent, short bursts throughout the day. Buy an egg timer or use a computer programme to remind you to stand and walk every hour. She also suggests opening up the back of your chair from 90 degrees to a wider angle.Walking is probably the most underestimated fitness activity you and your children can partake in. A few benefits of walking outside include metabolising fat, improved joint mobility, optimising Vitamin

D levels, a social opportunity for the family and ‘servicing’ many of the body’s systems. Walking towards health The effects of technology may make our life easier, but not necessarily better. We challenge you to take a walk outside daily with your family. Enjoy the fresh air, feel the energising sun and spend quality time with your loved ones. Believe it not, if you sell the merits of walking to your children, they will cherish the time with you. Most importantly, you are setting your children up for a healthy future. Minimise the modern day risks of prolonged sitting with regular, low intensity movement and you will age gracefully! Craig Heslop is the founder and coach of Tribal Fitness. The Need for Pre-marital Tests by DR JINAN DARWISH

Thousands of infants are born each year with beta-thalassemia. A fairly common blood disorder worldwide, this occurs most frequently in people from Mediterranean countries.

I

n an effort to decrease the incidence of genetic diseases in the Kingdom of Bahrain, a premarital screening programme was introduced in 1985. This involved a national campaign to increase the awareness of genetic blood diseases amid the population. In 1992, the premarital counselling service was extended to include all health centres. When 60,000 11th grade students were screened between 1999 and 2008, the mean prevalence of beta-thalassemia carriers and major were 2,097 (3.5 percent) and 19 (0.032 percent) respectively.

Laying down the law

Beta-thalassemias are inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. At conception, each sibling of an affected individual has a 25 percent chance of being affected, a 50 percent chance of being an asymptomatic carrier, and a 25 percent chance of being unaffected and not a carrier. In 2004, a law had been passed by the government, which requires all Bahraini couples to undergo mandatory premarital counselling. The development of this law included wide consultation ensuring that socio-cultural customs, theological issues and aspects of human rights had been comprehensively considered. Financed by the national budget, the national newborn screening (NBS) programme for inherited blood diseases was started in 2007. According to this programme, the cord blood of infants is collected at birth and posted to the central laboratory for testing. The urgency of this procedure is due to the fact that early identification is particularly crucial. Timely intervention can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality.

84 April 2014

What can be done

Clinical presentation of thalassemia major occurs between six and 24 months. Affected infants fail to thrive and become progressively pale. Feeding problems, diarrhoea, irritability, recurrent bouts of fever and progressive enlargement of the abdomen, caused by an enlarged spleen, may occur. If the diagnosis of thalassemia major is established at this stage and if a regular transfusion programme is initiated, growth and development can be normal until 10 to 11 years. Regular transfusions correct the anaemia, suppress erythropoiesis and inhibit increased gastrointestinal absorption of iron.

The after-effects

After age 10 and 11, affected individuals are at a risk of developing severe complications related to iron overload, depending on their compliance with chelation therapy. Complications of iron overload in children include growth retardation and failure of sexual maturation. Adults will face problems involving the heart, liver and endocrine glands. Iron overload is primarily caused by

transfusions. Other complications are hypersplenism, chronic hepatitis B and/or hepatitis C, cirrhosis, HIV infection, venous thrombosis and osteoporosis. The risk for liver cancer is amplified in addition to liver viral infection. In fact, cardiac complications are reported to cause 71 percent of the deaths in individuals with beta-thalassemia major.

Alternative treatments

The only available ultimate cures are bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from a matched family or unrelated donor and cord blood transplantation from a related donor. The aftermath of BMT is related to the pretransplantation clinical conditions. These include the presence of liver enlargement, extent of liver fibrosis and magnitude of iron accumulation. In children who lack the above risk factors, disease-free survival is over 90 percent. Prenatal identification of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) compatibility between an affected child and an unaffected foetus allows collection of placental blood at delivery and the option of cord blood transplantation to cure the affected child. www.womanthismonth.com

Ladies Who Lunch Meisei, a modern Asian restaurant tucked within Adliya’s 338 District, has launched a number of exciting new dishes on the lunch menu. The Woman This Month team gave it a try; here are our favourites.

BABY SPINACH DRY MISO SALAD

On the menu, the description of this dish requires two full lines — and for good reason. If for some reason we turn into vegetarians, you can assume that every meal we have comes out of Meisei’s kitchen. Choosing to try a dish by chef Michael Sang Kyu Lee is choosing to learn more about foods across the globe; this salad is no doubt one of the best you’ll ever try. Take our word for it. In this salad, baby spinach gets a drizzle of truffle oil. Toss it to get a perfect bite with Parmesan cheese and dried miso flakes, which are dehydrated at the restaurant. The Japanese lemon, yuzu, plays a central role in the dish as he uses the dehydrated rind and a lemon skin dressing to complete the dish.

www.womanthismonth.com

CRISPY DUCK SALAD

While the first is a softer salad, this is an explosion of textures. Dressings are always interesting at Meisei and it’s no different in this dish. Michael roasts figs with shallots and infuses it with Japanese flavours to create the unique vinaigrette. He believes in a marriage of natural and fresh components. You will be surprised with the unusual blend of Cape Cod cranberries, pomelos, pink grapefruits and pine nuts with the crispy duck. The light summer truffle called Umbria binds the diverse elements together.

FIRE CRACKER CHICKEN

Inspired by the people around him and his childhood dining experiences, Michael puts together yet another winning dish. Crispy corn-fed chicken is prepared in a spicy sesame vinaigrette to create a ‘cracking’ dish. The use of high grade paprika sea salts and Korean cayenne makes the flavours pop.

CANTONESE CRISPY SEAFOOD NOODLES

The highlight of this dish is the texture of the noodles, which is made in-house. It is a treat for the palate as it’s crispy on the outside and softer within. They are sautéed in a sesame, garlic and ginger sauce along with assorted seafood — shrimp, baby squid, mussels and scallops — and julienned vegetables. Call 17 007-770.

opper as a theme works in three ways — rugged, drama and lighting. Often seen in homes with white walls, the metal offers a warm look when themed with leather and reclaimed wood. A raw and natural setting never goes out of trend. For a wow factor, invest in a show-stopper. A copper table or bed introduces glamour to your home. Add small touches, like a picture frame or candle holder, for the theme to flow across the area. The kitchen is the easiest place to introduce this trend. Hang copper pans and pots over the kitchen island. A great way to add copper accents to your home is through lighting. You can find pendants in all kinds of shapes and sizes. They work best over the dining table and breakfast counter. Classic metallics never go out of style. This year it seems to be tipping over into the rose gold world. That pink element makes your home look modern although it comes in really simple designs. We always say it’s all in the details. So feel free to ‘accidentally’ leave a few copper rings and cuffs around the house. It’s glamorous. It’s feminine. It’s easy. Get your hands on the new metal!

The World's First Solar GPS Watch This state-of-the art timekeeping masterpiece merges the power of ambient light and orbiting satellites to give you atomic clock precision anywhere on the planet.

S

eiko’s authorised dealer, Ambassador Stores, introduces the world’s first solar-powered GPS watch — Seiko Astron — to Bahrain. The timepiece comes loaded with a Seiko-patented, low energy consuming GPS receiver that can identify 39 time zones, time and date, using the global network of GPS satellites. This makes it possible for the watch to divide the planet in 1,000,000 squares allocating a time zone to each. Wherever you are, this watch is capable to provide time with atomic clock precision. Once every day the Astron receives a time signal automatically or on demand from these satellites and pinpoints the exact location and time. The hands of the watch automatically adjust to the correct local time.

A thing of beauty

The Astron comes in three models. One is made in highintensity titanium, which is stronger than stainless steel, but has only 60 percent of its weight; the other two are made in high quality stainless steel. All have ceramic bezels, the same functions and high specifications, including a dual time sub-dial, in-flight mode indicator and sapphire crystal. The super-clear coating prevents 99 percent of light reflection and allows the dial to be easily legible, even in bright light.

Why now and why Seiko?

To combine Seiko’s solar technology with GPS required years of painstaking and ground-breaking research and development by Seiko Epson Corporation. Only Seiko’s advanced energy-efficiency technology could invent the miniature GPS receiver that requires so little energy to receive GPS signals from four or more satellites. The brand’s unrivalled skills in micro-engineering packaged this technology into a watch that is just 47mm in diameter and weighs about 135g. The recently launched Riyadat in A’ali is a pioneering facility that enables women to translate their passion into a viable business.

emale entrepreneurs in Bahrain have received a big boost with the opening of Riyadat, the region’s first business incubator catering for start-ups run by women. Spearheaded by the Bahrain Development Bank (BDB) and the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), Riyadat was launched by HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of HM King Hamad and SCW president late last year. The BD3 million project is designed as a mall with 60 units spread over three floors. Two lower floors are allocated for business units, showcasing clothing, accessories, gifts, furniture, perfumes and handicrafts. The top floor houses a business centre as well as restaurants, cafes, mobile service providers and design companies. “Through Riyadat, the SCW aims to pave

the way for Bahraini women to start their own enterprises. This is part of the economic empowerment programme launched several years ago to serve Bahraini female job seekers,” says HRH Princess Sabeeka. Riyadat is a partnership between the BDB, the SCW and the Bahrain Centre for Industrial Development for providing work opportunities for women. The project offers businesses an incubation period of three years, during which the female entrepreneurs are expected to stabilise their venture and find a foothold in the market. Bahraini women, who have floated new ventures and who own majority shares of their business, are eligible to apply for incubation services at Riyadat. Visit www.riyadat.com.bh.

Unmistakably a BMW Who doesn’t dream of owning a German car? We might not have it in our garage, but we did get to take the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé for a spin.

What you see

The exterior sets new standards in terms of aesthetic design for four-door vehicles as seen in its low height and the flat roofline that smoothly flows into the rear end. The low and graceful lines are especially impressive when looking at the car’s side profile. The recessed passenger compartment appears low and smoothly stretched. The frameless door windows are a design element indicative of a sporty coupé. In addition, the elongated side windows optimise the incidence of light to enhance the feeling of spaciousness.

What we saw

You are sometimes accused of not seeing things through to the end. However, in the coming weeks you will prove that you can take a task past the finish line if it inspires you enough. On the relationship front you could hear from an ex-partner, whose surprise appearance may cause stirrings within you that you would not have expected.

Find out what April has in store for you…

You have been stretching yourself financially for sometime now. It seems that you have finally arrived at breaking point this month. The sooner you get this out in the open and into the hands of someone who can help you, the sooner you can rest easy once again and bring a little peace of mind back into your life.

Sagittarius Nov 23 - Dec 21

Your thoughts are still with an old flame that you cannot seem to get out of your head. This is having a negative impact on your life since it is obstructing any progress you might hope to make with a new partner. Admittedly, your current situation is not all you might have hoped it would be, but you need to give things time to grow.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 20

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20

Cancer Jun 22 - Jul 23

The time has come for you to face up to a longstanding dispute. Try to resolve it because things have gone on far too long. Stop being so stubborn and take matters into your own hands. You will feel a lot better about yourself and the situation if you do. Money wise, there could be an unforeseen expense. Make sure there’s a little left in the pot.

Those who took a chance last month in chasing a dream will have made some progress. There is still plenty of hard work ahead. Although you are not afraid to pull your weight, just make sure you don’t overdo it! In family matters, your concerns may be directed towards a relative whose financial weaknesses are dragging them deeper into debt.

Taurus Apr 21 - May 21

Leo Jul 24 - Aug 23

Aquarius Jan 21 - Feb 19

Gemini May 22 - Jun 21

Virgo Aug 24 - Sept 23

Pisces Feb 20 - Mar 20

You may have been feeling under a great deal of strain since the start of the year and the frustrating thing is that much of this related to problems that weren’t even of your own making. However, the good news is that April heralds a new dawn for many of you and it will see you relaxing and being better placed to enjoy the world around you. Good news on the career front will present itself to you as a longstanding project heads into full deployment and changes everything in your life as a consequence. It’s going to make April a very busy time for you, but you’re sure to love every minute of the experience. The only real obstacle could be the number of hours in the day. You have been struggling with unsavoury elements in the work place recently. Do you stay and fight your corner or do you look for an alternative job? The choice can’t be made by anyone else. Whatever you do is bound to have a significant effect on those closest to you; so be sure to consult loved ones before making any major changes.

102 April 2014

Your bullish, sometimes brash, behaviour is set to get you in hot water again this month as you upset a family member and set the ball rolling in something that could develop into quite an argument. On the relationship front, a loved one might be a bit prickly because of problems at work; so try and be understanding. If only you could listen to your heart a little more rather than always follow the logical route. Take a step back and you might be surprised to discover that there are others things beyond the framework of the logical world. You are a lot lonelier than you care to admit to others and perhaps this kind of attention is just what you need.

Things have been improving on the relationship front. It seems that any problems you and a loved did encounter have now been completely ironed out. However, things are not so rosy at work and a demanding boss looks set to stretch your patience to the limit. Rather than blow your top, try and sit them down first and talk through your concerns. Your loyalty to a close friend will be tested this month as you discover a secret that may compromise your long-term relationship. Do you confront your friend or do you keep quiet? Whichever way you go, the outcome is set to cause you major headaches. If you get the opportunity to take a holiday, then you should grab it with both hands. www.womanthismonth.com

What If…

by JAMES CLAIRE

Floods in Britain got me thinking about the controversial topic of climate change. I heard of protests; only this time it was about planet Earth.

A

mounting number of folks are refuting discussions about carbon emissions, ozone depletion and green house gases. A growing trend is the disbelief of millions of people around the world that global warming is nothing but, well, hot air! What if all these years we have wasted countless column inches on a subject which is nothing but fiction? What if the trees are doing their job? What if all the money raised from carbon emission taxes was only a way in which the government found to tax us again? What if we simply have been lied to about the future of the planet? What if we are not in such imminent peril as scientists suggest? What if the planet is simply getting old and wearing out? Like a toy or a washing machine on the spin cycle, it all wears out eventually. We discuss dinosaurs and the Palaeolithic Age. We speak of millions of years of fossils and of mankind through the ages and his wayward actions. Perhaps it’s not global warming but global ‘wearing out’ that we should be concerned about. What if all the other planets were not born barren? What if we are alone because we are the last? What if we just have it all wrong? I occasionally go home and take strolls on the same beaches I enjoyed in my youth. I have known them for nearly 30 years; they remain the same. The water level has not risen and claimed acres of land. The high rises on the beachfront still sit where they did when I grew up; the water is no closer today than it was yesterday. So where is the truth of water levels rising on a global scale? I visited a tiny island resort during a recent vacation. The resort sits precariously along www.womanthismonth.com

the edge of the ocean; yet it has never been claimed back in the 10 years it has sat there. Scientists would have us believe that entire nations sit perilously close to being absorbed by the oceans. For my entire life I have heard the stories of Venice sinking, yet it has not in more than 40 years. We can agree that natural weather phenomena of recent years have claimed a lot of lives. Is it Mother Nature’s fault or is it our own doing? The ‘sea change’ has brought countless thousands of rich yuppies to the seaside. The closer, the better. Living on a private island, building beach houses and lake houses have become the rich way to live even in poorer countries. Rivers rise, oceans swell, mountains slide and bushlands naturally catch fire. We

are more than seven billion people and yet our inhabitable land surface is not growing. It is we who are spreading. Perhaps we need to think a little before we build, procreate and play in the future, rather than blaming the environment and creating fictional realities. I’m not a conspiracy theorist and I’m no scientist. My own research begs the question, “What is the truth behind rising tides and global warming when the waters ebb no closer today than they have in over 30 years?” Too often we watch the news, but how often do we question it? Perhaps there is no great dilemma about the weather than the words of Kin Hubbard, “Don’t knock the weather. If it didn’t change once in a while, nine out of ten people couldn’t start a conversation.” April 2014

Spring Cleaning by BEHNAZ SANJANA

T

This time, stretch the age-old ‘spring cleaning’ dictum from what’s around you to what’s inside you.

his year the spring equinox falls on the 20th of March, right about when you lay your hands on a brand-new Woman This Month. How symbolic, considering that the day ushers the fresh and the renewed. The vernal equinox is celebrated by a number of cultures around the world. With regards to astrology, this is the first full day of the sign of Aries, and is also traditionally believed to be the first day of the astrological year. This celestial ritual is heralded as a time for rebirth and a new beginning, which makes it just the time to get on to all that we have put off doing for sometime now. Those New Year

resolutions lying redundant in the obscure corners of the mind could be dusted out. Let the warmth of springtime shed new light on them. A little tweak here and a slight amend there might just make them seem more doable. So what’s new that you are going to embrace at the turn of the season? A good habit or two? A detox? A clutterfree home perhaps? Learning a new skill, sport or language is often the beginning of unimagined possibilities. And let that quick temper, the old vice and the negative vibes around you be eliminated with the last traces of the winter chill.

Build on what is good for you and the world at large. Detach from all that saps the vibrancy from your spirit (vixen-like girlfriends included). Sounds too tall an order? The key to successfully turning a new leaf lies in baby steps. All it takes is one step at a time. Folklore says that you can stand raw eggs on end on the first day of spring. There is a scientific explanation for that somewhere. But it would be fun to gather family or friends to attempt this, along with patience, tact and a dozen right-shaped eggs. If all fails, have them scrambled, poached or in keeping with the season sunny side up! www.womanthismonth.com
