I love shoes! But who doesn’t? Actually, I have a theory that if you are not crazy about eye-catching footwear, then you lose your mind for handbags! I’m definitely in the first group. I like pumps, flats, boots, sandals, flip-flops, stylish sneakers and the list just grows. The unusual ones with different heel designs or extra details are my favourite pieces! These are the objects of my desire from the new collections.

Write Here Write Now Get in touch by email, Twitter, Facebook or Instagram! World traveller, I love all sorts of trips that involve water, I’m not the best swimmer or a diving enthusiast, but I like to be close to it. So during my holidays I try to look for destinations with heavenly beaches and lakes, but I never thought of waterfalls! For my next holiday I’ll seriously consider one of the places you mentioned in your “Incredible Escapes” page in your March issue. The Plitvice Falls in Croatia seems to be amazing and I’m definitely researching more about it. Thank you! Best wishes, Tara

Letter WTM team, I’m writing to tell you that I loved the new pages, mainly the kids’ one with cute and adorable products. I’m a mother of three and I’ll definitely look for your future issues to see what’s new in town for the little ones. Sometimes you just don’t think of all the places available on the island that offer products for children. I always go to the same stores, so it is nice to see that we actually have more options. Regards, Amal

WTM Social Buzz

Stylish girl, My wardrobe is usually painted in black, white and grey. I don’t like (or don’t know how to introduce) colour into looks in a way that I feel comfortable with. However, in your “Get the Look” this month, I really enjoyed the way you paired the khaki shade (a sober hue that I think I might be able to wear) with pastel tones. I believe I can use the same trick of pairing pastel colours with my monochrome pieces. Thank you for the precious tip, I’m sure I’ll be more adventurous next time I go shopping! Regards, Trish

Floral

Revisited lowers on clothing and accessories are starting to become a classic and not a trend anymore, as we’ve seen the colourful blossoms year after year. However, there is always a new way to showcase them. This time, they come big and bold in different floral arrangements or camouflaged into another print. We can spot a variety of specimens appearing in one big print or in abstract forms. Large coloured petals or black and white sketches create an outstanding effect to dresses, skirts and tops. The novelty interpretation of this summer’s pattern is the trendy way of wearing this traditional motif. Blugirl and Missoni added floral sketches to their military and zigzagged prints. Valentino’s dress recalls vintage flair with a patchwork of patterns and bright colours. Chanel and Victoria Beckham delivered a watercolour painting print, the first with bright hues and the second in pastel pink.

SWISS-MADE WATCHES Last year Paris witnessed Italian fashion brand Roberto Cavalli Group joining with Swiss leader in the high-end watch sector, Frank Muller Group, to launch a new watch collection.

R

oberto Cavalli by Franck Muller are ‘must-have’ pieces which can be found at A La Mode outlets on the island. The distinguished designer-watchmaker duo revealed a breathtaking collection which incorporates the distinctive DNA of both brands. The timepieces combine the modernity of the Italian designer and the technical competence of Franck Muller. The timepieces collection is a luxurious fashion statement inspired by the unique Roberto Cavalli style, incorporating some of his most iconic and representative elements such as animal print. The range is developed in steel, featuring Swiss-made movements. It has anti-reflective sapphire crystals, semiprecious stones and comes with gorgeous leather straps

or metal bracelets. The variety of shapes and the fusion of glamour, creativity and elegance have been the driving inspirations behind this stunning launch collection. The watches are being sold in flagship Roberto Cavalli stores, selected Franck Muller Boutiques and in an elite network of the best watch retailers in the world, such as A La Mode. The objective of the two brands joining together is to develop Swiss-made watches of the highest standard for both women

any brands went back in time to find inspiration in the period of hippie mania, psychedelic prints and the beginning of the disco era. Loads of colours and a back to nature lifestyle influenced the catwalks of the spring and summer collections. Not only the typical patterns of the decade, but also its designs. Bell-bottomed trousers and wide sleeves temper the season’s style. Vests and fringes are also symbols of the trend which are explored this season. The cuts, brought back straight from the past, get a modern twist so we don’t end up in a time machine. Retro prints can be spotted in the catwalk shows of brands such as Louis Vuitton and Emilio Pucci. The hippie mood from the beginning of the seventies is revived by Alberta Ferretti and Chloe. Knee-high boots worn with fluid dresses are Tommy Hilfiger’s and Etro’s way to embrace the decade’s vogue.

G

ingham plaid comes from the table straight to your wardrobe. The geometric pattern, usually used in tablecloths and printed in cotton materials, is now being featured in high-end brands’ racks. Mixed and matched with other motifs or appearing by itself; the grids have simple colour combinations such as pink and white, blue and white or even the most traditional, black and white. Often worn during summer, the small squares became popular in the ‘50s, but then lost their glamour. This season will see gingham's return in great style as it’s been spotted in many fashion shows. Dresses, skirts and accessories were covered with this uncomplicated, fresh and fun design. Altuzarra and Diane Von Furstenberg kept the small and typical way of showing this print. Oscar de La Renta opted for big and bold squares while Temperley London explored its basic lines to mix with more complex patterns.

White Out ummer is a synphony of bright colours, we all agree on that. However, some fashion houses decided the hot season would be the ideal moment to embrace an all-white (or at least mostly white) look. The ivory shade is perfect for the Middle East heat, the colour reflects light, which means we, technically, feel fresher when opting for it. The colour is widely worn in casual looks – T-shirts, shorts and cotton dresses. When used in more sophisticated fabrics and tailored trousers the hue conquers a highend status. Laser cuts, lace and embroidery transform the pieces making them more elegant or relaxed depending on the material and how it is applied. Elie Saab took the colour to the red carpet with fine fabrics and detailed work. Hermes and Issey Miyake worked on the texture to add a unique effect. Dior teamed white with colourful accessories.

ixing and matching different patterns is an art mastered by few people. You must look for colour and shape co-ordination to achieve a good final look. It’s easy to get lost along the way and end up with a terrible result. The designers definitely know how to make it work and their collections this season are a great inspiration for those colour lovers looking for an exciting way to dress-up. You can be sure that when the patterns create a flourish of visual effect, it looks awesome. The folk and ethnic styles are the best representatives of the success of this concept. You can pick an item with its patchwork of print and textures already chosen, such as a dress, or put a top and bottom together to conceive an interesting flow. Effect ext to the trend for flesh-baring transparency, we spotted the laser cut or net technique widely spread in the spring and summer fashion shows. The laser cutting method has been used in past collections, mainly in haute couture designs. However, now technology has made it available to mass manufactures, hence it’s became commonplace to see laser cut silk and leather in ready-to-wear collections. The extreme accuracy, clean cuts and sealed fabric edges to prevent fraying make this method of design very popular in the fashion industry. It’s also suitable for many different materials such as silk, leather, nylon, neoprene, polyester and cotton. The wow effect is guaranteed and you can create original patterns or just squares to get the desired effect. Some brands didn’t go for the laser cut method but rather used knitted fabrics or materials that create the same perforated result. Tod’s and Versace opted for the technological option, while Proenza Schouler, Altuzarra and Balenciaga found other ways to get the trend into their collections.

Explorer et ready for the adventures of the new season with military green and khaki colours. The olive shades are remnants from the winter collections that are still looking good. Not only does this colour scheme bring to mind archaeologists and forest explores but the same can be seen in the details such as big pockets and comfortable and strong materials. Trench coats, shorts and rubber-soled boots are must-have pieces to add to your explorer look. Another strong symbol of this trend is the vest. Made with all sorts of material and in different styles, it will spice up your wardrobe and add extra oomph to your laid back style. Sophistication in the explorer trend relies on special fabrics such as suede and silk applied in long skirts, dresses and elegant coats. Ralph Lauren had the perfect example with high-waist shorts, light-weight, long jacket and a hat. Salvatore Ferragamo and Gucci opted for classic jackets with big pockets for an extremely chic look.

hat do gold miners and the catwalks from the spring and summer collections have in common? Denim! Icons such as James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Marlon Brando transformed the ranch hand’s favourite into a symbol of youth rebellion introducing it to the urban dress code and making it a staple of casual style. The different washes and chemical processes the fabric goes through define its colour and texture. From very light to dark shades of blue, denim can be found in an array of clothing pieces, with pants being the most traditional way of wearing it. However, the material can also be used in shoes and handbags. Bottega Veneta and Gucci transformed it into ladylike dresses while Chloe, Leonard and Joseph gave a fashionable twist to the workwear jumpsuit converting it into a must-have piece for the season.

ROYAL BAHRAIN HOSPITAL

Embrace your Braces Gone are the embarrassing days of unsightly braces. Now with invisible ones, you’re secret is safe and you can smile with confidence.

T

he general perception of dental braces, also known as orthodontic braces, is that they are only used to align or straighten teeth. However, they also help to improve your bite and dental health at the same time. Braces are often used to correct malocclusions like underbites, overbites, crossbites, open bites, deep bites and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw. “Braces are required to correct the position of the teeth, aiding in

Dr Rajesh achieving a better smile, reducing food impactions and gum infections. They are also often used in the correction of jaw positions,” says Royal Bahrain Hospital’s orthodontist Dr Rajeesh Radhakrishnan. “If left untreated, these problems can result in tooth decay, gum disease, headaches and earaches as well as speaking, biting or chewing problems.” Patients with orthodontic

problems can benefit from treatment at nearly any age. An ideal age for getting braces is between 10 and 14 years but braces aren't just for kids, as more and more adults are also wearing them to correct minor problems and to improve their smiles. Most adults tend to shy away from orthodontic treatment, mostly because of the common perception that braces are for children.

“Now at the Royal Dental Studio, we offer concealed or lingual as well as clearpath invisible braces that are well hidden from the sight of others. Only you and your dentist would know that they are there,” says Dr Radhakrishnan. Call the Royal Dental Studio at 17246800 or visit www. royalbahrainhospital.com for booking and more information.

PEOPLE | cover story

The Royal Blush Woman This Month’s Farheen Ahmed spotlights the life of actress Kareena Kapoor who will be visiting the island this month.

Kareena Kapoor wearing Malabar Gold & Diamonds

T

here is an old world charisma about this green-eyed beauty. She is the epitome of grace and glamour and yet represents the new-age uber cool. Born into the fifth generation of the illustrious Kapoor clan to actors Randhir Kapoor and Babita, she needs no introduction. Kareena Kapoor Khan is the perfect blend of grace and glamour. She seldom shows any discomfort from being in the constant limelight. She is an actor whose horizon is way beyond the marquee. It usually takes an ‘extra’ something to truly shine above the rest and Kapoor has proved to the world that passion, courage and determination can indeed help one achieve all that and more. She loves the rush of adventure, the thrill of wanting to try something different and that has brought innumerable blockbuster hits with the crème de la crème of the acting fraternity including Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan and Akshay Kumar amongst others

66 April 2015

Kareena made her acting debut in 2000 in a war drama Refugee, which was followed by a series of less well known parts. However, 2004 marked the turning point in her career with her award winning role in Chameli, where she portrayed a sex worker. This was followed by meaty roles in big budget films like Omkara (a remake of Shakspeare’s Othello) in 2006. And then a spate of commercial hits: 2007’s Jab We Met, 3 Idiots in 2009, Gol Maal 3 in 2010 and Bodyguard in 2011. She has undoubtedly claimed the throne as the Queen Bee of Bollywood. In June 2010, People magazine described her as, “India‘s most beautiful woman”, while Eastern Eye and Maxim coined her as “Asia’s Sexiest Woman” and “India’s Hottest Woman” in 2010 and 2011 respectively. In 2009, a Bollywood nutritionist collaborated with her for Don’t Lose Your Mind, Lose Your Weight, a self-help book on weight loss which sold more than 10,000 copies in its first few weeks. This was followed by another book, Women

and the Weight Loss Tamasha. In 2012 Kareena also co-authored, with Rochelle Pinto, her autobiographical memoir The Style Diary of a Bollywood Diva. Having put her name to innumerable ad films and brand endorsements, in 2013 Kareena was signed as the brand ambassador of Malabar Gold and Diamonds saying: "It is my pleasure to be the face of such a prestigious brand that has become synonymous with style, design, beauty and trust. I am immensely happy to be associated with Malabar Gold & Diamonds who have introduced the Brides of India concept showcasing the traditional and vibrant rituals and colourful jewellery of brides across India. I wish Malabar Gold & Diamonds all the best in its endeavor to become the world's number one jeweller." At the signing ceremony MP Ahammed, chairman of Malabar Group, said: "Kareena Kapoor is an epitome of beauty and style and we are extremely delighted to have her www.womanthismonth.com

Acting in 3 Idiots as our brand ambassador. She symbolises contemporary India and represents the emerging youth of this country. Her presence in our communications will enhance our brand equity." Apart from acting, Kareena has been actively involved in a series of philanthropic activities including raising money for the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. In 2010, she adopted a village in Madhya Pradesh called Chanderi to support its inhabitants with the supply of electricity. She has also joined international campaigns for UNESCO and FIFA and played a pivotal role to combat domestic violence against woman as an ambassador for the ‘Shakti’ campaign, a project launched in association with NDTV television. The course of true love ran smoothly when she tied the knot in October 2012, after a fiveyear relationship with her long term boyfriend and Bollywood actor Nawab Saif Ali Khan, who is 10 years her senior. Even though they follow different faiths and had different upbringings, www.womanthismonth.com

their marriage was a reflection of love beyond boundaries. Saif is the son of Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and belongs to a royal Muslim family, whereas Kareena was born in a Punjabi-Hindu family and has also witnessed Christianity. Their big fat royal wedding crossed all religious as well as age boundaries. Speaking of her marriage Kareena said: “Being a bride is like a dream come true for every girl. It was like a fairytale for me.” On her wedding day, she wore her mother-inlaw Sharmila’s wedding outfit that was a gift to her by her own mother-in-law, Begam Sajida Sultan of Bhopal in 1939. It took designer Ritu Kumar more than five months to recreate the ancient costume using gold benarsi fabric in the likeness of the fabric used in the original. However, marriage has not derailed her from her career and she continues with more projects in Bollywood. She is one woman who isn’t afraid to wear what she fancies and that labels her as a true style diva. g

Stepping Towards Success From running a family business to serving as a member the Shura Council and promoting religious tolerance, Nancy Khedouri has done it all.

Committee meeting in progress

W

ith determination and ambition in abundance, it’s easy to see how Nancy has carved a successful path that spans across business and public services. She is a member of the Shura Council Foreign Affairs, Defence & National Security Committee … and that’s only one feather in her cap. Nancy studied law but instead went into the family import/export business after the tragic loss of her father when she was just 21. “There are times when destiny leads you in life much earlier than you envisage,” she explains. “I lost my dearest daddy, I had to quickly take the reins of our family business, being an only child. I embraced the requirement as a dutiful daughter and took on the role as managing director and continue to do so. “Being at the helm of affairs requires you to be sound, not just commercially but legally too. My passion for law and my qualifications have padded my ability to charter my path through a male dominated entrepreneurial society. “It was not easy, there was much to learn the hard way, each and every day but today I am thankful for that experience. It has taught me much over the years and moulded me into the person that I have become.” Being Jewish, Nancy has been featured in the international media as an example of Bahrain’s religious tolerance. She became a member of the Shura Council in 2010, an accomplishment which she says reflects not

68 April 2015

Bahraini society has evolved and has also progressively empowered women in all facets of life only His Majesty King Hamad’s stance on religious freedom but also his dedication to female empowerment. “I am honoured to be chosen to serve in this role, which demonstrates the encouragement of His Majesty King Hamad to female empowerment in Bahrain as part of the reform process in line with Vision 2030. It also shows the fact that our Kingdom has an inclusive enhancement for all its citizens, regardless of religious differences,” she says. Nancy says the best moments of her time on the council have been when her passion for law has been applicable to issues in contention. Meanwhile, even her low moments have been used as an opportunity to grow and challenge ideas.

Nancy Khedouri “The lowest point has been the delay in promulgating the revised Juvenile Law and, at times, when prudence is overridden. During a debate last year for the revised traffic law, there was an article proposed by colleagues from The House of Representatives, which would have banned expatriates living in Bahrain from driving. “This article, if passed, would have created a wedge in an hitherto inclusive Kingdom so I was one of the few at the Shura Council who opposed it as it was unconstitutional. Thankfully, my debate and that of a few of my colleagues, managed to steer the decision to oppose the proposed article.” Nancy’s career spans both business and public service in the Shura Council, not www.womanthismonth.com

Signing the national unity agreement

With Shura Council colleagues necessarily traditional women’s roles in Bahrain society. However, she sees it as an example of how things are changing. “Bahraini society has evolved and has also progressively empowered women in all facets of life,” she says. Accordingly, women here today have diverse roles as our society provides a platform to women to meet their ambitions, whilst also meeting the traditional roles of dutiful wife and daughter. I am happy that I am able to meet and fulfil both the societal norms and my ambitions.” As another string to her bow, Nancy works with the Bahrain-Japan Business & Friendship Society (BJBFS). Although not a founding member, since its inauguration she has assisted by heading BJBFS administration matters and has served on a voluntary basis ever since. The society was started to help strengthen bilateral ties between Bahrain and Japan, as the two countries have much in common including being archipelagos and depending on sea ports for trade. Furthermore, as www.womanthismonth.com

At a dinner with Shura Council

Receiving token of appreciation Bahrain is a prominent hub in the Gulf region, many Japanese organisations have been encouraged to set-up their regional offices here benefiting from the regional location and at the same time, join the society as members. BJBFS encourages interaction with many prominent Bahraini and Japanese businessmen and this interaction, no doubt, enhances bilateral ties. “The Japanese people have impressive fortitude and are survivors,” Nancy says. “I have been privileged to travel as part of high-powered delegations, to help enhance bilateral relations. I have visited Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Hakone. Japan is a beautiful country and overall I enjoyed walking through the breath-taking cherry blossoms when they were in full bloom during my recent call as part of His Majesty’s historic visit to Japan during April 2012.” The recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between BJBFS and its counter-part The Japan-Bahrain Economic

Co-operation Association (JBECA) in Tokyo, is another boost to the society. BJBFS is confident that this alliance will have mutual benefits in realising bilateral commercial, investment and cultural opportunities between the countries. Nancy says: “BJBFS looks forward to the formation of a Joint Business Council between Bahrain and Japan with the co-operation and support of The Bahrain Chamber of Commerce & Industry, which will enhance further co-operation between the two countries.” Keen to impart her wisdom to the Kingdom’s young women wishing to follow in her footsteps, she offers the following advice. “I have always been enthralled by successful personalities and leading figures, as each one respectively brings to the table a different merit; that way we are guided by an assortment of qualities that we can personally learn from to help achieve our own success in life. My advice to young Bahraini women would be to never be afraid of failure, for that is a step towards success.” g April 2015

Casting the Networking Net Celebrated academic, author and life coach Dr Clare Beckett-McInroy has released a new book that aims to guide readers to networking success on and off- line.

W

ith more acronyms after her name than a box of Scrabble; Dr Clare EdD, MAEd, PG Cert, PG Dip, BA Hons QTS, CPCC, PCC and MAC, is an authoritative figure in many areas. Her latest project, Coach Me Networking Know How, has more than 40 reflections and snippets of sound advice from international professionals and provides the most recent research around effective networking. “I love this topic and I am passionate about helping people connect,” she explains. “There are stories about what makes things happen, entrepreneurs, small business owners, blue chip executives, students and charity workers who all wanted to be effective networkers and I wanted to share their experiences of success. Networking has played a great part in my life and career. “The book is process- and content-heavy enough for people who wish to develop their networking skills and user-friendly enough for those wishing to take the power of networking more seriously.” The book is the first in a series, which is being co-authored with professionals in their respective fields. They will follow the same coaching style and include reflections from international professionals, gained through networking. Coach Me Career Capital, Coach Me Learning & Development, Coach Me Instinctive Project Management and Coach Me Parenting Perspectives are set to follow. Coach Me Networking Know How has taken years to complete as a result of Dr Clare’s busy schedule juggling other projects and activities. She has more than 50 published articles, two book chapters (Routledge), one published book with another release date in the first quarter of this year. She is also an editorial board member for the International Journal of Mentoring and Coaching for the European Mentoring and Coaching Council as well as being a committee member for their Coaching in Education international conferences. Dr Clare is also an active member of many societies and leads projects for young people in Bahrain to ignite motivation, creativity

When it comes to networking, Dr Clare believes reciprocity – responding to a positive action with another positive action – is key. “If you promise to forward a contact detail, follow-up on an enquiry or an offer of help, do it. Most people really enjoy sharing and helping others, there is a feel good factor that should not be underestimated,” she says. “Work on being remembered for reciprocating and develop yourself as a 'go to' person for something relevant to your quest so that others can feel they can also ask for help too.” g www.womanthismonth.com

Marchesa

WOODSTOCK WAVES The famous waved hair from the end of the sixties and beginning of the seventies is back. But just like any inspiration, it comes with a twist. Instead of lots of volume, the roots are flat and the curls are subtle. However, the traditional clear, centre parting is faithfully kept. This sexy style is perfect for your everyday commitments as well as evening events. Change your make-up and you will be ready to party. You can copy this type of style from the Marchesa, Emilio Pucci and Diane Von Furstenberg runways.

DVF ALLURING EYES Eyeliner is one of the makeup elements most girls can’t live without. However this season, we find new ways of applying it. Just Cavalli opted for a graphic lower line, keeping the rest of the make-up very subtle. Dior introduced pastel shades in the upper lid; shades of aqua green, soft yellow and light orange are the colour picks. Elie Saab painted the whole eye-line (up and down) in tones of blue, this artistic composition may be an option for special parties, but probably best avoided in your daily routine.

BARE FACED The ‘no-make-up’ movement is still strong and the idea of creating a make-up that doesn’t show, but delivers flawless skin, is perfect for summer. To achieve the best results, you must understand your skin and look for a combination of concealer, foundation and powder. This time round, naked skin style comes with a differential, instead of going completely matte, glowing touches are created with illuminating powder. You can wear some mascara, but avoid eye-shadow and lipstick to get the looks of Alberta Ferretti, Chloe and Christopher Kane’s catwalk beauty.

Chloe

FAKING IT This season also revealed a few tricks. Temporary tattoos, spotted on the Tommy Hilfiger catwalk, are a great option for those uncertain of going for a permanent one. You can have them painted on your skin or transferred (just like the kids’ ones). Zac Posen created a wet effect to the hair with a lot of gel (you can also use lacquer) combed back. The same style was also seen at the Versace and Marni shows. Preen went bolder with fake freckles on its models, the make-up looked incredibly natural and extremely cute!

SEALED LOCKS Ease your hectic everyday life with keratin-based hair treatments, techniques which help save you time on styling giving you precious extra moments for your favourite things.

L

onging for smoother and straighter hair? Joz Salon & Spa has the solution with its keratin-based hair treatment which could make long mornings in front of the mirror trying to control your tresses, a thing of the past. If you’re thinking of trying it, check out what you should know: TREATMENT PROCESS The hair-stylist applies the keratin hair-straightening product to your locks and uses the heat of a flat iron to seal it in. The process takes about 90 minutes or longer depending on your hair length. Joz Salon & Spa keratin products include: Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy, Brazilian Keratin Treatment, the Brazilian Blowout and Brazilian Hair Straightening. WAIT BEFORE WASHING It’s important to respect the posttreatment period during which you shouldn’t wash you hair – usually around three or four days. The solution takes time to work and if you wash it, the results won’t be the same. When you do wash, opt for sodium-sulfate-free shampoos. If you follow the directions from your hair-stylist correctly, the treatment should last for two to two and half months. TIME-SAVING If you usually style your hair straight, after the treatment, your blow-drying time can be reduced by 40–60 per cent. You can also say farewell to

78 April 2015

annoying frizz, you can even face a walk in our moist summer nights and your hair won’t change. HAIR DAMAGE Keratin treatments won’t make your hair break, but the flat ironing might. Some stylists may use too much heat which can scorch hair, making it break off. To avoid this problem ensure you are treated by a trained professional. MORE BENEFITS The keratin application also acts as a restorative treatment. It can strengthen hair and make it more resilient. The chemical straightening breaks down the bonds in the hair, which give your tresses their texture, and then re-bonds them. The result is straight, frizz-free hair that lasts from a few months to a year, depending on the process and hair type. Call 16 031-120 (Amwaj), 17 369-133 (Juffair) or 17 756-449 (Awali).

Green is Good

The rising mercury is making us all run back indoors, but that shouldn’t mean we must wait another eight months to enjoy the soothing sight of foliage. Ankita Mamgain shares some ideas for adding a green touch to your décor.

A

s you clean up the pool, get your AC serviced and put your boots and coats away, how about bringing a slice of your beautiful garden indoors? In addition to lending a refreshing touch to the décor, the right combination of plants can make the space calmer, improve air quality and make the atmosphere more relaxed, stimulating and interesting. Studies have conclusively shown reduced stress, increased concentration and better health for those who include plants in their living environment. Some of these greens, such as aloe vera, have significant medicinal properties, which can come in handy in a variety of situations. Be it aesthetic, physical or mental benefits, a little foliage can have a lasting affect on your wellbeing. STYLISH AND STURDY When we say “bring the outside, in,” remember to make a practical selection of which plants

82 April 2015

like the indoor space and do not require feverish, round-the-clock attention. Here are some specimens that can famously survive neglect as well as an obsessive nurturer: Pothos: This plant is the ultimate survivor and is known for its air-purifying qualities. Its trailing stems work well in a hanging basket or as a climber with support from any object it can find nearby. An array of lighting and temperature conditions will work for it, however you must allow soil to dry up a little between waterings. Spider Plant: In addition to being strong they add visual interest to a room and have remained in vogue for years. These do well in hanging pots with evenly moist soil and bright or medium light conditions.

Jade Plant: The thick, lush leaves and visually interesting branches grow slowly but have the potential to live for decades. Put them in a colourful pot next to the window and just let them be. The succulent leaves do not need a lot of water and prefer ordinary room temperatures. Rubber Tree: This is an easy to care for plant, capable of growing up to 2.4m tall, which can be tamed by regular pruning. Let the top soil dry out between waterings and position in bright to medium light conditions. Dieffenbachia: The leaves can grow up to 30cm long and will add a tropical look to your décor. Keep the room temperature normal and soil evenly moist with low lighting conditions for best results. www.womanthismonth.com

Peace Lily: One of the most popular indoor plants, this one looks delicate but can survive under the harshest of conditions. Again one of the most potent natural air purifiers, it has dark leaves with beautiful white flowers. Give it low humidity, low light and evenly moist soil. Snake Plant: There can’t possibly be an easier to handle plant than this one. Commonly known as Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, it has variegated leaves that grow upright and have yellow or white edges. It enjoys somewhat dry air and soil and normal temperatures.

Areca Palm: This beautiful plant can immediately spruce up any large room or hallway. It usually adorns corners, adding green accents to the space. Give it indirect light, somewhat dry soil and water every other week. IN THE RIGHT PLACE There are no hard and fast rules on adding plants to your décor, however, the size of the room and availability of light should be considered. The scale and proportion play an important role as well. A big plant is usually not advisable for a small room. However, an attractive lager shrub can round off an awkward corner or help conceal

an unwanted fixture. Try hanging tall climbers and runners in a basket in high ceilinged spaces with an arrangement of smaller bushes. The combination with taller plants beautifies a large room.

Do It Yourself Here’re our tips on growing Epipremnum Aureum, Pothos, Money Plant or Devil’s Ivy in the house. They’re all low maintenance and add a fabulous green touch. 1. Get any old glass bottles and fill them 2/3 with water. 2. Just drop a stem in and let the plant grow. 3. Change the water every two to three weeks.

The main objective is to create endless and articulated compositions; sofas, chaises and lineal and angular poufs. Go for armchairs formed by individual elements or large islands as a result of the union of several parts. The cut becomes architectural, decorative and a symbol characterised as distinctive and functional, simple but also complex. Buratti + Battiston Architects base their work on looking for a new interpretation of the relationship between simplicity and complexity, finding the balance, giving it an original value. Flexibility in the composition and the mobility of elements make it an easy option for the optimum comfort position. AND COLLECTION | BY FABIO NOVEMBRE AND is a spatial concept, a volume that cuts through the air, creating emotional turbulence for those who get swept up. FLAT COLLECTION | BY JORGE PENSI DESIGN STUDIO The FLAT Collection is made up of various pieces that can be used to form exterior lounge areas, but are also adequate for interior ones, thanks to neutral shapes that are still full of identity. One of the characteristics of this set is that it looks light, because it rests on the floor on beautifully formed aluminum legs which give the object an appereance of virtually floating. Another distinctive characteristic is the side table joined to the main unit, which at the same time is an armrest and a surface to lean on. The build allows for creating different combinations of pieces, to adapt freely to any architectural space and the corner unit fits easily into angular spaces. Around the Island This month Ghada Salem takes a trip around Bahrain to highlight some spots you can enjoy with your little ones.

Khalifa Park

R

aising your children in Bahrain can be quite challenging if you are used to outdoor outings with your tots! However there lots of places to go and activities you can join to help discover more about the Kingdom and enjoy its culture and traditions! In this edition I’ll list some of the places you can visit with your little one, maybe over the spring holidays? Tasneem Agriculture Tasneem is the first Bahraini farm to use hydroponic technology (farming without soil). The company also advises and builds green houses for other farmers and farms and trains them in the best techniques and practices of farming. Your kids can pick their favourite vegetables to make their own salad and can enjoy watching how planting without soil looks! More information: www.facebook. com/Tasneembh Riffa Fort Built as a fort during the reign of Shaikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Khalifa in 1812, Riffa Fort offers a wonderful view that one cannot afford to miss. Apart from the picturesque surroundings, its rich historical value offers an

90 April 2015

insight into Bahraini life in times past. The fort is located in Riffa (obviously) and inside there is a lovely coffee shop called Saffron that serves a traditional Bahraini breakfast. Rashid Equestrian and Riffa Fort Horse Riding Club Located in Riffa, the club offers horseback riding and you can visit it every Friday to watch horse races. You can always call on (+973) 17 442-666 to check if there is an event for the weekend. Fishing Trip Khalifa Park is a great place to spend the day on a weekend or during the spring holidays. Not only you can enjoy a picnic there and let the kids ride their bikes or scooters, but also go for a fishing trip, banana-boat ride, rent a yacht or visit an island through AlDaen office located at the north of the park. For more information call 36 677-785. Sitra Corniche There is a new corniche in Sitra by the sea,

which is a perfect place to take kids for walking, running, riding bikes and playing on scooters. Worth a stopover! There are also these popular places to visit before summer is here: Birds Kingdom, the camel farm and the Tree of Life. Also enjoy the break to give something back to the community. You can let your kids buy some food and drinks and place them in one of the “Feed the Need” fridges spread around the island. Scratching Beneath the Surface of Chickenpox This month Dr Jinan Harith Darwish brings light to an illness that affects kids all over the globe. Understand how to recognise and deal with it.

C

hickenpox vaccination has been part of the American childhood immunisation schedule for some time. Since they included the chickenpox vaccine as part of their routine childhood vaccinations, hospitalisations and deaths, due to chicken pox, have reduced by 80-90 per cent. Our immunisation schedule in Bahrain does not currently recommend routine childhood vaccination against chickenpox. What is chickenpox? Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease mainly of children under 10 years old, though it may occur at any age. It is caused by the virus varicella-zoster. The disease is considered a mild and harmless infection of childhood to the point that in some regions of the world parents hold "chickenpox parties" where their child's friends are invited to contract chickenpox. In reality, however, this “harmless infection can be much more serious than most people realise. When do outbreaks occur? Chickenpox outbreaks often follow a seasonal pattern with the most common months being from March to May. Is chickenpox infectious? A person with chickenpox is very infectious from two days before the rash first appears until all the spots have crusted over, commonly about five days after onset of the rash. The virus spreads in the air from person to person and if you have not already had chickenpox, you stand a good chance of catching it if you are in the same room as someone with chickenpox for more than 15 minutes or you have any face-to-face contact with someone with chickenpox such as a conversation. It takes between seven and 21 days, most commonly 10-14 days, to develop symptoms after catching the virus (the incubation period). Around 90 per cent of people who have not had chickenpox will contract it when in contact with a contagious person.

92 April 2015

What are the complications of chickenpox? Serious complications of chickenpox infection include bacterial infections of the skin, pneumonia which may be fatal, inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), transient arthritis, blood stream infections (sepsis) and even death. Women who have never had chickenpox and contract it during pregnancy, can pass the infection to the developing baby, which can lead to foetal abnormalities. Newborns, in particular, are at risk of developing severe infection. How can we prevent this disease? The varicella vaccine was first created in 1974, and has been safely used in many countries, including the US, Canada, Japan and Germany

since the 1980s. It can be given to children from nine months of age, as two separate injections, six weeks apart. If someone is unsure whether or not they have had chickenpox, they can still have the vaccine. The recommended two doses of the vaccine are estimated to offer 98 per cent protection from the disease in children and 75 per cent protection in adolescents and adults. Around 15-20 per cent of healthy vaccinated children will develop breakthrough varicella. This is a much milder chickenpox infection, without fever and with fewer skin lesions, occurring about 42 days after vaccination. Even if the vaccine is given within five days after exposure, evidence shows it can still prevent or reduce the severity of the symptoms. g www.womanthismonth.com

The Bitter Sweet Truth It’s in your energy bar and your kids’ candy floss. And of late, has earned itself a bad reputation. Behnaz Sanjana turns the spotlight on the devil called sugar, making it, well, not so sweet.

A

s you rip open that sweet treat, your heart beats a tad faster. Your eyes become larger and your breath shallower. You anticipate pure pleasure and, when it hits your taste buds, you feel a rush of sweet satisfaction. The story, however, is hardly delightful once that bar of chocolate or doughnut reaches your insides. Read on to know how and why. THE REAL DEAL Dr Bassam Hana, consultant in endocrinology diabetes and metabolic disorders at the Gulf Diabetes Specialist Centre, says the human body needs sugar to convert into energy. Glucose is the sugar circulating in our bloodstream, and is either derived from food or produced by the liver during the night or after meals.

94 April 2015

The sugar that we add to food is sucrose. “It is refined from natural sources (like beetroot or sugarcane) and comprises two simple sugars: glucose and fructose. This is what we buy off the shelves in the form of white or brown sugar. Contrary to popular belief, there is no difference between the two, except the colour!”, he says. The digestive tract transforms all the sweet stuff you munch on into simple sugar, which is transported into the bloodstream to reach the organs that need it to produce energy (brain, muscles, etc) and the surplus is stocked in the liver to use when needed. All sugar that we don't need to produce energy will be transformed to fat, eventually leading to obesity. Of course, this also depends on the insulin in your body.

Researchers say that after you’ve wolfed down a sugar-laden treat, your brain resembles the mind of a drug addict. The sudden spike in dopamine levels reinforces the need for more, causing even more sweet damage. We often find ourselves reaching for that cupcake by mid-morning. “That is due to hypoglycaemia, aka low blood sugar levels,” says Dr Hana. If you find yourself needing a sugar fix way too often, you could blame it on genetics. This is true especially in the relatives of diabetic patients. It is also common with nervous individuals, smokers and caffeine guzzlers. Or even due to overstimulation of insulin secretion if you’ve gorged on a sugary breakfast. Dr Hana suggests having a wholesome www.womanthismonth.com

Excess consumption of sugar is linked to obesity and this association begins in childhood morning meal, replacing jams and pastries with complex sugar (what is called slow sugar) like starch – whole wheat bread, oatmeal, beans, brown rice, brown pasta etc — and complementing it with vegetables and proteins. SUGAR, CHOLESTEROL AND CANCER It’s well known that high sugar consumption leads to diabetes, which is a global epidemic today. But new data finds sugar is the culprit behind obesity, cholesterol and heart disease, too. “Excess consumption of sugar is linked to obesity and this association begins in childhood,” says Dr Sunil Rao, specialist in internal medicine at the Bahrain Specialist Hospital. It is thus wise to think twice before we hand our children sugar bombs several times a day. Refined sugar is just nutritionally empty calories. They do not contribute to your wellbeing, but leave behind a burgeoning waistline. “Observational data suggest that increased intake of sugar amplifies the risk of heart disease, independent of other risk factors. Also, dietary sugar is inversely related to the levels of good or high-density cholesterol (HDL). Reducing sugar intake will increase this ‘good’ cholesterol level. Reducing sugar intake will also reduce triglyceride levels in the blood,” says Dr Rao. There is a lot written on the link between sugar and cancer. Dr Rao maintains that: “Eating sugar itself does not cause any www.womanthismonth.com

cancers. However, excess calories from sugar can lead to unhealthy weight gain and obesity. It is this obesity that is a risk factor for certain cancers, such as breast and colon.” BEING SUGAR SAVVY OK, so the verdict is that sugar is sweet venom. But how much is too much? Nada Jawahery, dietician at the Royal Bahrain Hospital, says: “A person must consume no more than 15 per cent of their calories from added sugar.” To elaborate, on an average consumption of 2,000 calories per day, 300 calories from added sugars is the limit. That translates to an allowance of around 20 teaspoons of sugar per day. If you think you’re well within this limit, think again. There are seemingly innocent foods that have sugars disguised within. “Fruit yogurts, granola bars and some wholegrain cereals have high amounts of sugar,” Nada explains. And beware, a 12-ounce can of Coke contains 9.3 teaspoons of sugar – nearly half of

the maximum allowance. Reading the labels behind packaged edibles (like readymade sauces and dressings) might make you want to ditch their frequent use. Remember that sugar goes by many names – corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, fruit juice concentrate, maltose, dextrose, sucrose, etc. And that is probably why the American Heart Association restricts the sugar you manually add to your food to six teaspoons only. Have small meals frequently to prevent dips in blood sugar. It helps to be partial to the ‘good’ sugars such as lactose, fructose and glucose, which can be found in foods such as honey, milk, apples and watermelon. These sugars provide energy. “If you must, satisfy your sweet tooth with wholesome, homemade baked products, made with sweetening ingredients that have vitamins and minerals, such as molasses and honey, rather than artificially sweetened food,” concludes Nada. g April 2015

Inside is also a familiar affair and anyone who has driven an Audi will attest that the DNA trickles down through each model. The S3 carries on the tradition of all S models, which includes a quad design exhaust system, sportier body styling elements combined with tremendous power and backed up with the safety of Audi’s legendary quattro all-wheel-drive system to name but a few. he ‘Change’ cosmetology and dermatology clinic is a part of the Middle East Medical Centre (MEM), providing various treatments to make you look as naturally beautiful as possible. Indian based cosmetology and dermatology specialist Dr Jitesh Shetty brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Bahrain as he spends the last 15 days of every month treating patients at MEM, located in Hidd. With a number of very successful clinics in Mumbai and other cities in India, Dr Shetty has travelled around the world gaining experience from top surgeons in London, Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand, to name a few, before developing his own procedure. Renowned for his non-bruising method, he says: “Ultimately you should be unique to your own technique and I have developed quite a few, especially when it comes to face contouring. I have a different perception when I do a cheek, nose or a lip and I have been getting a very good response here in Bahrain.” Primarily a dermatologist, Dr Shetty is competent in treating all skin related issues. “Cosmetology has been an evolved science and specialisation for me but the basics start with the skin and problems that relate to the skin,” he says. He specialises in many treatments including Botox, fillers and fine-thread contouring, which give patients instant facelifts. “These days beauty treatments have become simplified. You can transform a face in a matter of a few minutes to hours, knock off years or enhance your facial features,” he explains. He tries to do subtle work as this gives a more natural look and leaves people guessing. In addition to dermatology and cosmetology, Dr Shetty is also a hair transplant surgeon, specialising in a technique called Follicle Unit Extraction (FUE), which is a more sophisticated method compared to the older method - Follicle Unit Thickness (FUT). “In the new FUE technique, we go into each hair follicle with a mechanised extractor, which ensures minimal scarring, with multiple sessions easily possible and recovery time close to zero, meaning the patient is fine

Based on Hermann Tilke’s 2012 design, it is one of the newer F1 tracks and has the European model of 20 turns and 133-foot elevation change. This is America’s first purpose-built F1 circuit and hence is a destination in itself. Beyond the asphalt, it is known to have a hospital, executive meeting suites, a conference centre and a banquet hall, as well as an expansive outdoor live music space. Moving away from the circuit, this city is often referred to as the live music capital of the world. All over the place you can see bumper stickers urging ‘Keep Austin Weird’ and it has somehow retained its funky charm. As the 11th largest city in US, Austin sits on the banks of the beautiful Colorado River boasting a unique blend of desert and tropical zones. MOGYORÓD/BUDAPEST, HUNGARY his city is home to Hungaroring circuit and the Hungarian Grand Prix. Opened in 1986, the circuit is a winding track with a few elevation changes and is one of the last old-school tracks on the F1 schedule. Although you might not find much to do in Mogyoród, the town is just 18 kilometres away from Budapest, the cultural, commercial, industrial and political centre of Hungary. Located next to the Danube River, with the Buda Hills to the west and the Great Plain to the east, Budapest is a gem of a city and a delight for any explorer. This is a treasure trove of great architecture, art, cuisine and romance. Check out the royal palace; visit the famous thermal baths and pools, the numerous galleries and museums and quaint bars and coffee houses. This is also a great city for shopping, whether you like traditional folk art, rusty antiques or designer wear, straight off the runways.

MONTE CARLO, MONACO his is the ultimate playground of the rich and famous and perhaps one of the most interesting F1 tracks; a street circuit, that meanders through the city. Races have been held on the course since 1929 when William Grover-Williams won the inaugural contest at the wheel of a Bugatti. Monaco is the second-smallest country in the world and is in general, and Monte Carlo in particular, a beautiful seaside location on the French Riviera. The circuit is located close to the seafront and the azure harbour views greet racers and fans. Here yachts are as big as mansions, sparkling beverage is perhaps the national drink and even the railway station is swankier than most five star hotels. There’s a lot to do and see. From the warren of Monaco-Ville, with its souvenir shops, stroll through Monaco’s governmental heart to the royal palace. Savour its fine gardens, clean streets, sensational views and the world's grandest aquarium. And contrary to the popular perception you do not need a platinum card to enjoy it. Healthy-ish The original Bahrain Foodie, Marie-Claire Honeywill, shares her thoughts on the hype around healthy eating

MY SPICY HUMMOUS

A

nyone who knows me knows that I would much rather tuck into a nice juicy steak with mashed potatoes (made with butter and cream of course) and gravy, than nibble on a salad. It’s unlikely you’ll ever find me reaching for carrot sticks when I’m in need of a snack and the crisps I like to munch on are very definitely not made of kale! However I have recently concluded that it’s time I started eating more healthily. Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean I’m suddenly going to turn into a salad fiend and avoid all things carbohydrate and sweet, it simply means I’ve decided to pay attention to what I eat. Contrary to long-held beliefs, I’ve recently discovered that eating healthily isn’t necessarily about eating tiny portions of rabbit food and cutting out as many fats and carbohydrates as you can humanly live without, it’s about eating as purely as you can. By that I mean avoiding as many processed foods as possible and cooking and eating as much fresh produce as your wallet and schedule will allow. In other words making as much of what you www.womanthismonth.com

eat as you can yourself. It’s not about never eating pizza again, it’s about making your own healthier pizza. Well that’s MY interpretation of eating more healthily anyway. The truth is, the degree of healthy eating we all settle on is going to be different for each of us and unless you’re a trained nutritionist who knows exactly what you’re doing, it can be a lot harder than you think. Just a few minutes doing research on the internet will show you how complicated and confusing the whole process is. One article will tell you one thing and the next will tell you something completely different. There’s this research and that research and sorting through the fact from the fiction can be a very daunting process. And that’s before you’ve even touched on all the latest up-to the-second healthy food trends; organic, farm fresh, super foods, healthy fats, good sugars etc… The list is endless and overwhelming, demoralising and intimidating and what’s good for you one day, research will show, is bad for you the next. And vice versa. At the end of the day, my love for food

Ingredients • 1 large can chickpeas, drained (save the liquid) • 2 tbsp tahini • Juice of 1 lemon (you can add more depending on your taste) • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 2 tbsp olive oil, • ½-1 tsp crushed sea salt (to taste) • Tabasco sauce to taste Method Drain and rinse the chickpeas, reserving the liquid. Put all the ingredients in a blender with 2-3tbsp of chickpea liquid and blend until desired consistency is reached. Serve with toasted pita bread… or carrot sticks if you must. Star

Gazing Raphael tells us what the stars have in store for us this month. Aries Mar 21-Apr 20

You like to be in control of a situation and if you don’t know what’s waiting around the corner then you’re in no position to be able to exercise your authority. Consequently, when you are assigned to work with someone this month that turns out to be a bit of a livewire, it could unsettle you. There is a lesson to be learned here in that it doesn’t hurt for you to let your hair down every now and then, but it’s not an idea you’re likely to come around to in a hurry.

Taurus Apr 21-May 21

There are exciting times ahead for you and your partner, but only if you lift your head up long enough to recognise them. They won’t stay forever so grasp the opportunities with enthusiasm because the chance to shape your future has been placed firmly in your own hands. On the financial front, you may enjoy a considerable windfall that will help you out of a difficult spot and also set you up for bigger things to come.

Gemini May 22-Jun 21

Leo Jul 24-Aug 23

You have some serious thinking to do this month, especially about job and romance. On the work front, you are really allowing a troublesome colleague to get under your skin and it is causing you to lose your focus a little, so resolve unsaid issues. As for the matters of the heart, you haven’t been honest with your partner about what you want from the relationship and the time has come for you to assess your feelings and decide where you want to go from here.

Virgo Aug 24-Sept 23

A new admirer has suddenly made an appearance in your life. If you haven’t already, you are soon going to wake up with a very strange feeling in the pit of your stomach as you realise you are quite taken by his arrival. What you do need to think about, however, is any current commitments or obligations you have. Your loyalties are about to be severely tested and unless you are certain of what you want, you could end up in an emotional spin before the month is out.

Cancer Jun 22-Jul 23

Libra Sept 24-Oct 23

110 April 2015

For your sign, relationships are often the most important thing in life. When you give your heart, it is usually for good. Still, it does mean that you have probably suffered more heartache than any other sign. This month that someone you are very keen upon settling down with is a little more distant than usual. This may force your inner fears or insecurities to kick in. However, rather than deliberate over the possibilities in your head, confront the person concerned.

Sagittarius Nov 23-Dec 21

By nature you are sociable and intelligent with a great capacity for learning and you like the freedom to move about within your own environments as you please. However, when you find this movement hindered by the pressures of a bank balance in a negative state, then you can become quite an irritable and introverted character. Putting together a sensible and realistic budget plan is all that you need to set things straight. For many of you, all you really want is a quiet life. However, that can be a very difficult thing to come across, especially when you have such demanding friends and family. This month, you are going to find yourself put upon by one relative in particular and you may not be able to contain your anger. It’s not often that the crab gets to bear its claws but people often forget that you have them and when the need arises you’ll use them.

Scorpio Oct 24-Nov 22

There are many positives about your sign and the energy you create is often a great catalyst for those around you to aspire towards better things. However, you also have a few questionable traits that you just can’t help giving in to. With this in mind you should exercise caution if any temptations are put in your way. People’s emotions are fragile and even if you aren’t acting with any malice, certain individuals may misinterpret your intentions.

You have a lot on your mind this month, mainly financial worries, but also concerns that are centred on a young child. Where your money is concerned, take some good advice and then make sure you listen to what you are told. On the other matter, it could be that his health has not been quite right and rather than allow yourself to be dismissed by the GP as an over-anxious parent, take your problem to a higher authority if you are not satisfied.

Capricorn Dec 22-Jan 20

Although others close to you have provided you with more than enough warnings, you have chosen to ignore them in favour of your own beliefs when it comes to the actions of a partner. You knew there was some weight to their words, but stubbornness blinded you to the obvious. On a more optimistic note you will find out that a business plan you had been pining your hopes on is about to be accepted.

Aquarius Jan 21-Feb 19

When you insist upon being difficult just for the sake of it, then you often end up getting yourself into a mess which will be difficult to escape from. On the work front you could find things going against you, simply because you ignored good advice and sensible logic in favour of sheer bloody mindedness. On the financial front, it could be time to tighten your belt so play it safe for the next couple of months or you could dig yourself into a very deep hole.

Pisces Feb 20-Mar 20

Right now you find yourself in a very contented spot as far as your life is concerned. Relationships seem balanced, finances are adequate and your health is also very good. However, one of the failings of your sign is over-indulgence. You never know when to stop and this problem is set to cause an issue for you. You may find yourself driven towards something that isn’t a reality! www.womanthismonth.com

Bahrain Specialist Hospital’s dermatology specialist Dr Hala Abdou Al-Abetah explains the causes and treatment of this common occurrence. “Acne vulgaris (acne) is the formation of comedones, papules, pustules, nodules and/or cysts as a result of obstruction and inflammation of pilosebaceous units (hair follicles and their accompanying sebaceous gland),” she says. Mostly affecting adolescents, acne can be easily diagnosed by examination. Treatment includes a variety of topical and systemic agents intended to reduce sebum production, bacterial counts and inflammation as well as to normalise keratinisation (organic process by which keratin is deposited in cells).

production and hyperproliferation of keratinocytes (predominant cell type in the outer layer of the skin). Other triggers include hormonal changes that occur with pregnancy or the menstrual cycle, occlusive cosmetics, cleansers, lotions and clothing as well as high humidity and sweating. Acne worsening is also linked to diet and can be caused due to inadequate face washing. Some studies even suggest a possible association with milk products and high glycemic diets. Acne may subside in summer months because of sunlight's antiinflammatory effects. Symptoms and signs include cystic acne, comedones appearing as whiteheads or blackheads and papules and pustules. With the correct diagnosis such as assessment of contributing factors, determining severity and reviewing psychosocial impact, treatment is possible.

A BOOK TO READ AGAIN

HOME DÉCOR

The dining table is my centre point of attention; I like it beautifully decorated. I also love wall paintings, antique mirrors and chandeliers.

I love Dan Brown; I wish he published his books more often! But the last book I read had the biggest impact on me. Eat, Pray, Love, is an amazing book whose main character, Liz, I can somewhat relate to.

BEAUTY TRICK

CELEBRITY ICON

I admire Angelina Jolie for her outer and inner beauty. She is a real role model for me. She is a very passionate woman and she shows it in every aspect of her life: as a great professional, as a wife, as a mother and as a woman fighting for human rights. Monika Gorzna

I don't believe in quick fixes, what you eat and drink will show on your skin! That's why I created Natural Beauty Tea for Passion Tea; it's packed with polyphenols, powerful antioxidants that can keep your skin clean, hydrated and glowing.

MUCHLOVED CUISINE

I love food in general; I love smart and healthy eating. However, the cuisine closest to my heart is Thai. The flavours in Thai food just explode in your mouth and the ingredients help boost your metabolism. It is also simple and easy to cook.

HOLIDAY DESTINATION

Nowadays I only travel for food and tea experiences and since eating and drinking tea is the best two things I do, I consider myself a very lucky girl. Sri Lanka always will be my tea heaven; I also love Thailand mainly for its food.

WARDROBE MUST-HAVE

Dresses, all kinds of them! My wardrobe goes from full and fancy ballroom gowns to simple classic dresses that I wear daily.

FAVOURITE FLOWER

Red Roses – as a symbol of love! For the scent, nothing can beat Jasmine.

FLATS OR HEELS

Heels! Rather classic than fancy, but I must have flats always with me. If I need to run here and there, I change during the day for a few hours. New Look
