EDITOR’S NOTE
t’s that time of year again when the catwalk styles of the world’s various fashion weeks start to make their way into the shops. And, though I can’t help thinking many of the high-fashion looks bear little or no resemblance to things us mere mortals would wear, I do find the new season’s looks exciting. So I’m always keen to see what our fashion and beauty editor Fernanda Langhammer flags as the latest trends and how she comes up with ways that we can adapt them for our own wardrobes. I feel a shopping spree coming on. Fashion’s all about colour and pattern and those are two areas dear to the heart of artist Sabine Algosaibi. Ankita went to meet her in her rainbow-hued home to learn about her inspiration. Our other interviews this month are Anna-Maria Dowling, who told Behnaz Sanjana how she climbed the ladder to become Bahrain’s first female hotel general manager, and Abrar Darwish who’s launched an innovative child development centre for youngsters with communication difficulties. In the wellness section Behnaz tackles a subject that affects many new mums, but is rarely spoken of – the effects of pregnancy on women’s bodies. We know lots of our readers are mums and, since we’re always keen to engage with you ladies, I’m very excited to tell you we’re launching a series of special events where mums and kids can get together, have fun and meet new friends. This is just the first of several of new developments we’re planning for the coming months. Find out more on page 73. There’s loads more to see in this month’s magazine, I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together. Enjoy!

On my lust list this month are a few items that have popped into my inbox. I reckon this funky belt from Origem would be ideal to channel the ‘70s vibe. With pool season just around the corner, I’ll be heading to Vilebrequin to pick up this snazzy swimsuit. And the Concertina bag from Paul Smith…well, a girl can dream.

his month, we celebrate women who have been there, done that. We not only give you some practical pointers on how to take care of yourself better, but also speak to two women who will inspire you to take life by the horns and hug it tight.
The majority of your food choices should be packed with vitamins, minerals, fibre and other nutrients
NURTURE WITH NUTRITION Clinical dietician at Bahrain Specialist Hospital, Danah Quintana, says: “The majority of your food choices should be packed with vitamins, minerals, fibre and other nutrients. Older adults need fewer calories than others. Making smart food choices can help you stay healthy, manage your weight and be physically active.” The key, Danah says, is to focus on variety and make your heart disease. A sedentary lifestyle needs 1,600 calories count. A multivitamin tailored for your calories per day. Moderately active and very age group will fill any gaps in your nutrition, active women need 1,800 and 2,000 calories she adds. respectively per day. Small changes in your diet can help
prevent menopausal weight gain. “Menopausal women should watch their sodium intake and remember that caffeine and spicy foods can trigger hot flashes,” advises Danah. Healthy, whole foods like fruits, berries, dark leafy greens, salmon, whole grains, yogurt and water help your body to deal better with menopause. LOOKING GREAT Dermatologist Dr Bhartendu Mehta, of the American Mission Hospital, has come up with some simple, effective ways to slow down skin aging. “Protection from the sun forms the foundation of every anti-aging skin-care plan,” he says. “There is evidence that the sun causes photo-aging — premature ageing of skin.” He maintains that sunscreen and moisturiser form your most effective anti-aging arsenal. “Using these every day can make a noticeable difference. Select a broad-spectrum, waterresistant sunscreen, SPF 30 or more. Be sure to
Fifty (Plus) and Fabulous This was a very thoughtful piece and I would like to thank Behnaz Sanjana for taking up this topic. No one expects to see 50-plus women in a fashion magazine and there I saw something which didn’t make me feel terrible about myself. We get caught up in expensive treatments, each promising a bigger instant miracle than the other, but the truth of the matter lies in long-term care – basic but long-term. I know of a number of women who’ve been to the dermatologist for all sorts of treatments and look like their own caricatures. Debby and Shubha both look great and are so inspiring. I also echo Shubha’s thoughts on how we tend to prioritise everything except ourselves. I think somewhere society also expects a mother to be extremely selfless and devoted to her family and that’s where we lose the plot. We need to take some time that’s exclusively for us, and I am so glad someone said that out loud. Jehan. March 2016

Freedom Wear FREEDOM WEAR I’ve been facing a peculiar problem recently, each time I go out to shop. I’m not one to change my wardrobe every season (perhaps that’s why the problem) but, after a few years of skinny trousers, the wide-legged ones have become all the rage. And I like the idea, they seem a lot more comfortable SOPHISTICATED TWIST but I honestly didn’t know how to go about putting together a look with them. So Fernanda Langhammer, thank you so very much! Your three, distinct looks are quite inspiring and I know exactly what to look for the next time I go out to shop. It even busted my belief of pairing a body-hugging top with baggy trousers, and I can see loosefitting tops make an excellent match with them as well. My favourite look is the ‘Sophisticated Twist’ as it’s a funky match of playful and formal at the same time. Rachel. Kendall Jenner

ixing and matching patterns is a risky thing to do with your wardrobe, but totally worth it when the result is a creative and jaw-dropping look. Pairing floral with stripes is a classic combination that works well if you give enough attention to your colour palette. You can create an elegant outfit without having to compromise comfort. This is a great option for work or to enjoy a stylish summer evening. Long legs definitely wear this style best, however the cropped options available this season can be embraced even by petit girls. If this is you, make sure to check out the next option with vertical lines too.

Not Your Mum, Not Your Milk Not Your Mum, Not Your Milk I am a mother of a two-year-old and only two weeks ago I found out that my daughter is allergic to cow’s milk. I recently introduced cow’s milk to her diet and we started seeing that within minutes of consumption she would vomit and had an upset stomach. Not many people are aware that CMA is an actual condition as the popular notion says how healthy milk is for children, and it’s shocking to know that it is the third most common allergy among kids. The article shares a lot of useful information for those who are dealing with the problem and, of course, those who didn’t know much about it. Many thanks. Rupa. C
Cow's milk allergy (CMA) is the most common food allergy in young children, affecting roughly two per cent of under fours. CMA does not include other adverse reactions to milk, such as lactose intolerance, which are non-immune mediated. Dr Jinan Harith Darwish explains the condition.
ow's milk is the third most common food, after peanut and tree nuts, responsible for food-induced anaphylaxis in children and mixed-age populations. Milk is also the third most common food responsible for fatal or near-fatal food-induced anaphylactic reactions. Broadly speaking there are two types of CMA: immediate – symptoms classically begin within minutes of exposure to cows’ milk protein; and delayed – symptoms typically begin several hours or even days after exposure. Some cases of CMA may show mixed features of both types. Casein and whey proteins are the milk proteins accountable for the bulk of milk allergies. Cooking diminishes the allergenicity of whey proteins, this may clarify why extensively heated milk is better tolerated by many patients. Similarly, yoghurt cultures, which ferment and acidify milk, diminish the amount of intact whey protein and may result in tolerance of yogurt-based dairy products by individuals with CMA exclusively sensitised to whey proteins. The diagnosis of CMA is based upon history and laboratory testing, when available. The cow’s milk protein from the infant’s diet. symptoms will usually develop within the first Elimination diets are typically started week of starting cow’s milk in the with diet. her diet if she continues to breastfeed. This may be tricky and is helped by having a dietitian discuss hidden sources of dairy and soy prior to starting the elimination diet. Giving infants goat’s milk or sheep’s milk will not improve CMA. Soy milk also is not recommended. Many infants will have similar allergic reactions to the proteins in these milks or soy-based formula. Fortunately, cow’s milk allergy resolves in 90 per cent of children by the age of six. Half will have tolerance when they reach a year and more than 75 per cent will have resolution by three years of age. Most infants that are started on cow’s milkfree formulas or breastfed by a mother on a cow’s milk-free diet will need to remain on the diet for about six-12 months. At that point, the child can be challenged with cow’s milk, and if they have no reactions, milk can be put back into the diet. g www.womanthismonth.com

ight gowns and delicate lingerie are no longer items exclusive to the bedroom. This trend, which first emerged in last season’s shows, is now very much present in most of the brands’ spring and summer collections. From high-end fashion houses to street casual, underclothes are the star for lots of looks. Lacy details found on spaghetti-strap tops will be the highlight of any outfit throughout the hot season. They come in a variety of colours, but the most popular picks are black and white. A full set of long sleeves and pyjama pants in satin and silk fabric is another fashionable choice that you’re likely to see on the streets. It might seem awkward at first, but stylish women all over the globe are embracing this comfy and unusual attire whether it be at plush events or a casual dinner. Dolce & Gabbana went for a bold floral and blue, pyjama-inspired look in its Italian show. Alexander Wang and Calvin Klein Collection opted for a night gown look with long satin/silk dresses. Givenchy created a jaw-dropping top that can easily transform and upgrade any ordinary bottom.

LIGHT VS HEAVY
A smart way of wearing this trend is to pair the lightweight top with a leather skirt or jacket – yes, leather is going to be easy to find on the racks this season. The contrast of different textures and materials helps you stand out from the crowd. Faux leather has a lighter feel so it can be a better choice; also opt for different colours like camel, which will make your look even more stylish.

FASHION MEETS FLAIR
Combining elegance with style, this renowned brand’s new Jewel Couture collection is the epitome of taste and refinement.
E
ver since he shot to fame in the 1950s, French designer Pierre Cardin has been inextricably associated with the flair and elegance that defines the city of Paris. Today, that same spirit of effortless chic infuses the Pierre Cardin Jewel Couture collection, which encompasses timeless, classical pieces with a modern twist. Echoing the impeccable style of the brand’s Paris couture creations and underpinned by the flawless quality of its craftsmanship, these pieces are designed to accompany a woman through her private and professional life. She can be confident in the knowledge that her jewellery is always just right for the occasion. Never one to rest on his laurels, Pierre Cardin continues to set trends rather than follow them, and this season sees a complete renewal of the Jewel Couture collection, with more than 70 items being launched in numerous new families. Supported by trendy new materials and improved technical know-how, the innovations are taking three main directions. Firstly, the offering of easyto-match classic items for daily wear is extended and refreshed with interesting new details. At the same time, Pierre Cardin is pushing the envelope in the fashion collection, taking the level of creativity one step further and proposing unique and iconic design motifs. And thirdly, the brand is enlarging its offer of matching watch and jewellery sets. All the additions to the Jewel Couture collection remain faithful to Pierre Cardin’s perennial trademarks of quality materials and meticulous attention to detail. The pieces are either plated with rhodium to prevent tarnishing and give a cool silver tone, or finished with 18-carat rose-gold or yellow-gold plating for greater warmth. Sparkling zirconia also has a strong presence in the fall/

winter collection, bringing a sense of lightness and luxury. The result is a range of highly original, attractive and affordable jewellery that can adapt to any mode, mood or moment. PONT DES ARTS True to the Pierre Cardin tradition of drawing inspiration from Paris for its jewellery collection, the Pont des Arts line references the city’s most elegant metal bridge, which has recently become famous for the ‘love locks’ attached to it as a romantic gesture of committed love. Many of these padlocks are in the shape of hearts, which are the theme of the exquisite Pont des Art collection, including necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets. Since time immemorial, the heart has been a universal symbol of love
and there is still no better way to express feelings of affection than with a piece of jewellery featuring this motif – the key to her heart! The delicate Pont des Arts hearts have a curvy, asymmetrical profile that emphasises the softer side of women, and are highlighted with a swirl of zirconia that conjures the joyous, carefree aspect of love. As an innovative finishing touch, a smaller paved zirconia heart sparkles inside each piece or, in the case of the bracelet, dances beside the bigger heart on the chain. Presented in rhodium-plated, 18-carat gold-plated or 18-carat rose gold-plated options; this is a collection full of charm and joie de vivre. tripes are popular patterns in the clothing world. They can be wide, thin, vertical, horizontal or even diagonal. A democratic print, they can be worn by men, women and children, old and young alike. They are also super-versatile, easily stamping a casual summer dress or a long fancy gown. This season stripes come mostly in colourful versions – bright shades in between dark hues with different widths to create interesting contrasts. The type of fabric will dictate whether an outfit is evening-ready or more suited for casual daywear. Satin, silk and linen tend to be more elegant, while soft cotton and denim are best used in relaxed outfits. No matter the occasion, this colourful patterning will be much in evidence during the warm days of spring and summer. Tommy Hilfiger’s youthful collection is full of vibrant lines – pieces that are pool- and beach party-ready. Marc Jacobs opted to stamp lines in two colours for a fun option. Prada’s stripes are interrupted while Sportmax counts on bold and intense hues. Salvatore Ferragamo plays with casual long dresses for easygoing sunny days.

UPGRADED PRINT
The ribbon stamp is usually seen in informal clothes, however many celebrities have opted to wear it at red carpet events and they definitely steal the scene for laid-back glamour. High-end brands embraced the pattern and sophisticated pencil skirts and handbags have been featuring this simple graphic visual. When opting for stripes, don’t worry if they are vertical or horizontal (even if you feel you have some extra kilos); the cut and fitting are the most important things to worry about here.

Delicate femininity meets futuristic hi-tech for spring/summer footwear in a collection that is both timeless and bang up to the minute. BLUSH BABY Easing into the new season, clean lines and soothing pale tones of blush and delicate pearl grey bring a romantic aesthetic to the modern working wardrobe. Court- and flat-shoe profiles are versatile and complement spring dressing.
BEAUTIFUL BAG LADIES Soft powder shades of blush and lemon, mixed back with mirrored metallic play into the feminine feel. A burst of spring colour drops later in the season, citrine and coral orange saturate a mostly muted palette.

ot everything that glitters is gold. However, we always tend to follow the light and use it as an interesting detail to add sparkle to our outfits. This season, the metallic trend has gone hard-core and super bright. Reflective leathers, lamé, crinkled silks, sequins and other shiny materials comprise a range of ‘must haves’. Glitz is definitely the order of the day, with plenty of silver and mirrored items. Trousers, tops and skirts are either adorned with or tailored from luminous fabric to catch the reflective trend. Some brands opted for a futuristic effect, but most just used sparkles to add drama to their collections. Paired with other trends or basic pieces, the glitter trend can also be spotted in shoes, handbags and complementary accessories. Glossy lightweight jackets are also a way to add a metallic touch to your outfit. Emilio Pucci opted for a full-on sparkle look that works well for a glamorous night. The ‘it’ piece to help you shine is definitely a stunning pair of trousers as seen on the runways of Isabel Marant, Loewe and Tod’s. Paco Rabanne played it safe with its flashy jacket.

range is the new black! And we would all do well to obey this expression when honing in on a solid colour to complete our summer look. Not my favourite hue I must confess, but its insistence (appearing in so many runway shows) might just change my mind. It is a shade easily suited to any skin colour, with variations from bright to burnt making it a democratic pigment. As a combination of red and yellow, this hue suits any colour that works well with the primaries. Brown, blue and white are perfect to make it pop if you are looking for ideas to complement your look. To embrace the trend in its pure essence, opt for full-on orange, from hair to toe. You may feel like a carrot, but hey, the fashion police have given the look a green light and the catwalks have confirmed that this formula really works, so why not? While Balmain went extra pizzazz with long and ruffled dresses, Hermes opted for casual and sporty, pairing its skirt and top with trainers. Tory Burch bet on ethnicity with a long kaftan dress and Atelier Versace once again showed a runway collection which would be very difficult to wear in real life.

eminine flair is always popular, no matter what the season. Some brands make it very obvious while others just make a gentle nod to the girly side of our nature. Delicate flower prints, lace and sheers are part of this romantic style. Here, there is no place for extravagant embellishment or too many cut-outs; the idea is to be simple, dainty and dreamy. This season’s florals are somewhere between English garden and abstract sketches. Small flowers are painted in soft colours on long, whimsical dresses made with lightweight material in creamy tones. The modern princess looks for practical and easy-to-wear pieces that can fit perfectly into her busy life without losing the magic that makes every day just a little lighter and more fantastic. Embroidery and 3D applications give extra charm; however, this year they are more minimalist, following the 'less is more' philosophy. Etro, Gucci and Mother of Pearl used sheering and created intricate dresses for special occasions. Alexander McQueen went grand with a long-sleeved dress and clean cut. The designer Francisco Costa turned a pyjama-inspired look into an enchanting style for Calvin Klein Collection.

lamenco ruffles, off-the-shoulder tops, voluminous skirts and shocks of red are the main aspects that transport us to Spain. The designers (a lot of them, by the way) want us to spend spring and summer there but physical location is a mere detail; attire and attitude will transport you to the land of tapas and Las Ramblas in the blink of an eye. One layer, many layers, big or small ruffles, it doesn’t matter; the important thing is the overlapping of fabrics. Dresses and tops best represent the concept and bare shoulders or one-shoulder pieces are the highlight of the season. They can be paired with ‘toreador’ high-waist trousers for an authentic twist on the Spanish traditional dress code. This look brings sensual femininity and funkiness to your wardrobe, making sure you are ready to enjoy the long days and short nights of the hot season. Blugirl, Oscar de La Renta and Proenza Schouler dug deep for Spanish inspiration and took genuine creations to their catwalk shows. Michael Kors opted for exposed shoulders and creamy colours and a less Spanish feel. Salvatore Ferragamo chose large pieces of fabric in a colourblocking structure for maxi effect.

olour clash is the rule – rainbow style applied in colourful prints, patchwork or even just a mix of bright pieces. The composition works better when the shades scream super-bright and loud contrasting in graphic or bold floral prints. A hint of black or any dark hue intensifies the impact of this colour party. For those who love a splash of colour, summer is the best time to see yourself as a blank canvas exploring your sense of coordination. The easiest way of doing this is picking a printed piece and pairing it with a solid shade. However, best of all here, is that there is no right way, let a multicolour palette invade your wardrobe and follow your instincts (if they’re not great when it comes to creating a coordinated look, be inspired by the catwalk images and follow our tips). Dsquared2 and Kenzo took striking prints to another level for outstanding and daring looks. Tommy Hilfiger mixed and matched prints and colours in synchronised and harmonised lines. Christopher Kane was audacious with an unmatched puzzle and a dreamy dress from Chloé shows that colour can spice up any outfit.

Wearing different prints in a single look can be tricky, so here are some ways of making it work. Stripes and florals make a great duo, but when wearing ethnic or very complex drawings, stick to one piece, such as a dress, or pair with black, white or an earth tone. Another way of putting prints together is to look for those with the same colour palette. The result will be a cool visual effect.

he late '60s and early '70s are still very much in evidence in fashion inspiration this season. Bell-bottom trousers, suede dresses and swinging fringes are some of the elements that represent this fashion moment and can be spotted in brands’ new collections. However, the big trend from that period that’s grabbed the spotlight is the print that symbolises the flower power movement. However, tie-dye has grown up becoming a simple, sophisticated pattern, leaving its hippie roots behind and conquering the catwalks. The pattern is beach appropriate and swimsuits are expected to be covered in this DIY-style stamp, so make sure to add plenty of this print when you’re getting ready for the coming summer’s pool parties. To embrace the modern twist expressed in this season’s pieces, opt for neutral shades. Earth tones are perfect and easy to pair with brighter shades. Altuzarra and Narciso Rodriguez painted classy dresses with eye-catching tie-dye effects. BCBG Max Azria betted on a carefree style to impress its exigent public. CHOKERS AND OTHER STATEMENT NECKLACES: These are a holdover from 2015, thanks to their appearance at the Oscars last February and an abundance of spring 2016 styles – think knits to lingerie to light-weight denim – that demand a statement piece around the neck. GOLD LAYERING PIECES: The price of gold is now looking attractive and consumers seem to be flocking back to the warm hues of this metal. There are some looks, such as delicate charm bracelets and dainty pendant necklaces, that just translate better in gold. And when prices are more reasonable, who wouldn’t prefer to make a layered statement in a richer metal?

Dreaming in Colour
Sabine Algosaibi’s essence is on every inch of the impressive property she calls home, yet she manages to remain an enigma. Ankita Mamgain tries to uncover the many layers that make up this elusive artist.
T
he March sun had a generous presence in Sabine Algosaibi’s 1,905sq/m villa. The 55-year-old met me with a beautiful smile that travelled straight to her eyes. She wore a crimson dress that adorned her delicate frame and a hat that brought out the bohemian child within. I met her in her magnificent home in Janabiya where her friend Steven and dog Salsa occasionally kept us company. The first thing that strikes you is the feast of colour that surrounds Sabine. How did she come to develop this variegated sanctuary for herself in a desert? The answer has much to do with her inherent sensibilities as a person, deeply influenced by a childhood spent in Africa. Born in Austria, she moved to South Africa with her mother and step-father at the age of six. “We were always on the road. I don’t

Sabine Algosaibi remember a single weekend in my childhood when I was at home. [We were] always camping outside, exploring new areas,” she reminisces. And there was a lot of moving. She went to 13 different schools and moved house 21 times in eight years. “As a child it was really exciting,” she says of the impact of such a life. “It brought a lot of openness to my personality; I learnt to take people for what they are, to be more tolerant as we were always with all kinds of people.” It also made nature a huge part of her life and, of course, fuelled her love for colours. “I am a colour maniac; I think that has a lot to do with South Africa.” After high school, she left for Switzerland to study commercial law. “I was following a boyfriend, so I took up whatever course was
available, just to be able to be there,” she declares with a matter-of-fact innocence. So what brought a person so free, open and uninhibited to the Middle East? “Love,” she says. “Oh, I’m such a hopeless romantic!” At 21, Sabine visited her parents, in Khobar, Saudi Arabia (KSA), and met her husband at a party. She moved in with him and never left. This was the turning point for her, as up until then, her uncontainable energy had always had a vent. In KSA, these avenues were very limited. “KSA really bored me. My husband was really busy and I didn’t do the tea party thing; I wanted to do something with my hands. I didn’t know what, but it had to be something with my hands.” She found a book of pottery she had purchased in Austria, got the supplies and www.womanthismonth.com
unleashed her wild creativity that had been lying dormant for years. “I took over his garage, made myself a studio and I taught myself pottery. I ended up doing all the tiles for this house myself,” she says. As her family grew, pottery became more challenging. “I thought, I’ve never painted before, so let me paint. So I got myself a canvas and acrylics and started painting. I didn’t know what I was doing, I just went for it,” she says excitedly. Thirteen years ago she came to Bahrain and that ignited a new fire, propelling her into more ambitious projects such as cement statues. “When I came to Bahrain, after Saudi, it felt like walking into paradise. I could drive; I was allowed to take up courses. I took a lesson in watercolour painting, which is not my thing at all, but just the fact that I was allowed to do it made me feel great,” she says. “I went crazy with the house,” which Sabine admits is her biggest project to date. She also didn’t like any of the garden statues she saw, so decided to make them herself. “An Indian gentleman taught me how to weld two pieces of metal together over a weekend and I started welding and doing cement statues. That was some hard labour! The first ones I did completely by myself, no help at all.” She now uses papier mâché as it is much easier to work with. Sabine’s art is just as diverse and multifaceted as her personality. She isn’t your most straightforward artist who dwells in only one medium. From what I understand, much as she appreciates stability, her life’s been all about transition and she revels in the www.womanthismonth.com
challenges novelty brings. Almost cartoon-like in its aesthetic, her work is colourful, wacky, with layer upon layer of richly imagined elements that depict an almost child-like understanding of the world. However, it can still impart a deep sense of struggle, fear and tribulation. And her process seems quite straightforward. The starting point is usually colour, something she dreams of and a word, which becomes the central theme. I saw a large painting on the wall and asked her what word she had in mind for it. “What mask do we wear every day? Because we all do, don’t we?” she replied. What she wants to communicate through her art is essentially life, fun and joy, as she believes in finding the joy in everything. “My husband passed away four years ago and we went through a really hard time,” she explains. “The mourning was the hardest. And what helped was the joy that colour and movement brought. I did a lot of dancing. It was therapeutic.” Personal narratives invariably enter her colourful kaleidoscopes and sometimes the experience transforms from a joyful expression to being profoundly cathartic. A body print piece she’s doing in Austria, based upon the word ‘submission’, is proving to be particularly challenging. “I am having a hard time painting that one. A lot of my Saudi dreg is coming out and it’s not very positive. I keep painting it over with black.” Interestingly, she did not know
she had the creative vein as a child, since in her school, if you were not good at math, you couldn’t do art. Coming back to Bahrain and her home, she explains that the words for this project were ‘family’ and ‘protection’. She took her rough sketches to Argentinean architect Felipe Yofre who ‘got her’ immediately. She has now opened the villa to local artists, who use it as their studio, rehearsal space or to just meet and brainstorm. “I believe the more you give, the more you get. When I have young and creative people walking in, it gives me joy.” She is thrilled with the current art scene in Bahrain and how it has grown over the last few years. “The Nest idea is just fabulous and Al Riwaq is doing a good job. Boho Baha is always doing amazing stuff. There are more galleries, people and courses. But, of course, we need to push for more,” she notes. Sabine also talks extensively about Art Reach, a project that involves schoolchildren. Mustafa Halwachi is one local artist who particularly impresses her. “About 20 years ago I came over from Saudi with a friend to see a clairvoyant from Northern England that every body was raving about. She told me that you’re going to live in a house that has a very strong colour and you are going to be surrounded by water. Who would have thought?” she says reflectively. She now splits her time between Austria, where she takes care of her mother, and Bahrain. Her daughters Latifa and Suheila, both students of media and communications, live in Milan and Switzerland respectively. I wondered, having moved around so much as a child, following her heart and discovering places and cultures absolutely alien to her, building a space with her own hands and then showing ready willingness to share it with the outer world, what was her idea of home? Her response was immediate. “Home is where the heart is. You have to have love in your life and then it doesn’t matter where you are.” Does she feel loved in Bahrain? “Oh yes, very much so. Bahrain has been very good to me. I am very grateful.” g

Checking In to Success There’s a lovely lady at the helm of two landmark hotels on the island. Behnaz Sanjana had a candid chat with Anna-Marie Dowling and came away feeling inspired.
A
nna-Marie Dowling has recently been appointed the complex general manager of The Westin Bahrain City Centre & Le Meridien Bahrain City Centre, and is delighted by the opportunity to work in Bahrain. Bahrain’s first female hotel GM has successfully run large-scale operations for famous brands in other countries but says hospitality was not always her ambition. “I was not a very academically gifted child. I was known more for talking than concentrating on my studies back in school,” Anna says, a mischievous glint in her eye. Armed with a basic diploma, she joined the Holiday Inn as a chambermaid. After nine months of cleaning 16 rooms a day, Anna was selected for an in-house trainee programme. “I worked at the ground level of every department of the hotel; I cleaned rooms, worked at the reception, switchboards, kitchens, restaurants and banqueting areas,” she says. Anna did not grow up wanting to be a head honcho in hospitality. “It was once I started working at a hotel that I aspired to be in the general manager’s chair. I remember cleaning the general manager’s office as a public area attendant and thinking that this is going to be my desk someday,” she reminisces. After years of hard work, Anna steadily climbed the rungs to her dream designation. She believes that the beauty of working in this industry is that you do not need a fancy degree to manage a successful business. “If you are determined, hard working, self-motivated and driven towards your goal, you can get to wherever you want to. My previous hotel had a turnover of around £50 million a year. Back then, if you’d asked any of my teachers if they thought I’d be running a business that size, I don’t think any of them would have signed me up for it,” she laughs. Her strong points lie in empathy for staff at all levels, as well as a thorough understanding of the commercial aspects of the business. This especially helps in a competitive market such as Bahrain’s, where new players are entering the market continuously. “Our hotels are already well positioned in the market. What we focus on is strong sales and marketing. To keep things fresh and evolving, we introduce changes in our menus and find new ways of bringing service delights to customers in ways they have never experienced before,” she explains.

The world is a lot more accepting of women in higher positions these days. Dubai has female general managers in iconic hotels. I’m lucky to be the only female GM in Bahrain When asked about the challenges of the job, she says every day is a new challenge. "You can never rely on yesterday. It’s also a challenge to run a complex with two hotels so close to each other." And of her status as Bahrain’s only female hotel GM, she adds: “The world is a lot more accepting of women in higher positions these days. Dubai has female general managers in iconic hotels. I’m lucky to be the only female GM in Bahrain, but I’m sure that won’t be the case for too long.”
Her message to young women in the hotel industry is as straightforward as she is herself. “Your destiny lies in your own hands. Too often people blame their company or another person for their failure to make it there. But it’s really up to you to single-handedly get to where you want to be.” There will, of course, be road blocks. She relates an instance when she first applied for a position as GM, and didn’t make the cut. “I understood the reason for that, giving myself two more years, learning more along the way. And then when I reapplied for the post, I was sure of being the number one candidate for it.” One of the most prestigious accolades bestowed on Anna is leading the list of ‘UK's Top 100 Most Influential Women in the Hospitality & Leisure Industry’ in 2011. Did that give her the feeling of finally having arrived? “It gave me a sense of accomplishment. But I don’t think you’re ever really there, because there’s always something else to achieve on the journey. And it’s not enough to just run your business; it’s also what you give back to the industry and the community. That’s something dear to my heart; and moving forward, I will embrace that here in Bahrain as well.” g Scan to watch full interview. www.womanthismonth.com

Bridging the Gap Abrar Darwish runs a child development centre that supports children with communication difficulties. Behnaz Sanjana met with her to learn why this is so important.
L
ittle Village Center is a bright, cheerful place for children aged between18 months and seven years who present with learning, communication or behavioural difficulties. The centre offers the children the opportunity to play, develop and flourish. Established in May of 2015, the centre works with children and their families to support their communication and learning skills, with the aim of integrating them into a mainstream school setting with their peers. A qualified speech and language therapist herself, centre director Abrar Darwish says: “Our students have a range of different communication difficulties and struggle to get accepted into pre-schools. Unfortunately, many private schools on the island do not cater to children with special needs, and therefore there is no way forward for them. Special needs centres in Bahrain are limited and the majority provide either individual counselling sessions or are long-term prospects for the children, giving them little opportunity to integrate with regular children in the future. We aim to be a stepping stone for our student, working on developing the skills they lack and enabling them to join conventional schools.” The centre is close to completing its first academic year, and out of the 30 students enrolled a few are now ready to graduate to a regular school. Abrar says: “Our success lies in our children progressing to regular schools in a year or two. But a child’s abilities decide whether they can move on. For those who do, we will ensure that they receive the necessary support from us. Our staff will follow-up on their progress even after they move on, making it easier to adapt to a regular school.” Abrar hopes that more schools will open their doors to their students, enabling them to grow and interact in a normal environment. She feels this is imperative, as their social interaction must happen in a natural setting. “Children learn by observing others, and the more they are with normally developed peers, the better their progress,” she says. “Each child is assessed to identify the gaps in their development and an Individual Education Plan is developed. The centre is set up as a normal pre-school; with specialised teachers, a daily routine and both child-initiated and adultled activities. The schedule also incorporates individual therapy sessions with a speech and www.womanthismonth.com

Abrar. language therapist, occupational therapist, behaviour therapist and music therapist. So, throughout the day, each child receives individual therapy sessions depending on their needs, as well as opportunities to be part of a group and a class, which allows them to develop their social skills.” At Little Village Center, children get used to a classroom setting and learn to adjust to a routine. They are taught to follow a schedule, participate in class activities, have snacks independently, hold a pencil and line up, all of which are skills that are essential for them to
integrate into a mainstream school setting. To reinforce their learning, the children’s families are involved in their progress. Parents receive a report on their child’s activities every day. Weekly emails allow them to see pictures and videos of what the children have been learning and regular review meetings enable them to assess how close the child has come to a particular objective. “We are also developing a mobile application that will provide the parents with information, pictures, and the child’s progress, enabling them to discuss what they did at school with their children. To increase the families’ involvement further, the children are sent home with individualised activities to work on with their parents,” says Abrar. The centre also conducts workshops for parents, and Abrar is planning on organising special evenings for parents to meet and discuss their doubts and difficulties with others who understand their challenges. Abrar goes on to stress the importance of early intervention services for children who exhibit symptoms of delayed development. “Often parents approach us when the child is four years old, which is a bit late. I urge parents to follow their gut feeling and to seek help for their child earlier on. The sooner a child and their family receive support, the better the chances of them being able to overcome their difficulties.” g April 2016

Time to Scrub Up! Though hair and nails are in effect dead cells, we wouldn’t want to be without them. However, there are some less attractive areas of dead stuff that must be done away with. Ankita Mamgain looks at the hows and whys of exfoliation.
W
hen it comes to skin care, the most basic and effective practice is what’s been described as the three-step process of cleanse, tone and moisturise. But if the first step itself is not done right, the other two may have little success. While regular skin cleansing is clearly beneficial, another absolute must when it comes to skin care is regular exfoliation. Whether you have dry, normal, oily or sensitive skin, exfoliation can bring new life to your complexion. Our skin regenerates itself constantly – in a typical 30-day period, a cell should make its way from the deep layers to the epidermis, that is the skin’s outermost shell. However, factors like age, pollution, diet and weather can contribute to dead cells not shedding themselves naturally. These cells clog your pores and create blockages, wreaking havoc for your skin. That’s where exfoliation becomes really important. The practice accomplishes a few things at once: it decongests pores, evens out complexion and brightens the skin and allows other products (like serums and moisturisers) to penetrate more deeply and therefore be more effective.
60

Acne-prone skin sheds more cells than other skin types, but the cells do not fall away. Instead, they stick to the skin, clogging pores and hair follicles. As this dead cell debris builds, the skin produces excess sebum – which leads to blackheads and blemishes. Hence, contrary to many people’s belief, exfoliation is really important to manage and prevent acne. HOW TO EXFOLIATE What type of exfoliation best suits you depends on your complexion, health and the sensitivity of your skin. The two methods of exfoliation are chemical and physical. Chemical exfoliation can vary in its degree of abrasion and cost, from mild toners all the way up to dermatological peels that could cost up to a few hundred dinars. For physical exfoliation, there are a number of different products available in the market and their constituents can range from fruit seeds (apricot), nut shells (walnut), salt or sugar, chemicals, acids, ingredients that ‘digest’ your dead skin cell, circular exfoliates (jojoba beads) to grounds nuts, grains and even flours.
Abrasive over-scrubbing is not healthy and a thing of past. It scratches, tears and rips your skin. No matter how tiny the abrasions, they damage your skin and accelerate aging. One should avoid any products that contain www.womanthismonth.com

exfoliants with jagged, sharp edges that do not dissolve, such as pit fruit seeds and nutshells. In case of salt and sugar, although they do start with sharp edges, the particles dissolve with water and, with the circular motions of application, become round, thus preventing any skin damage. If you don't like the gritty formulas, which should be avoided if your skin is sensitive, try an enzymatic peel. It will sit on your skin for a few minutes and dissolve grey, uneven patches. Mainly, the peels contain fruit acids from pineapples, papayas and other exotic fare and are gentle enough for twice-weekly use. Chemicals, acids, and micro dermabrasion can burn, blister and cause redness and swelling to your skin as well as age its appearance over time. For fresh, clear skin, you don’t have to always purchase expensive products from the market. Some of the most effective scrubs are already present on your kitchen shelves. BAKING SODA A physical exfoliant, it is the main ingredient in many expensive exfoliation products. What makes it especially effective is that it is a fine, yet hard powder, making it highly successful at removing dead skin cells without causing excessive irritation. HONEY Raw honey is antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal. It kills skin infections, including acne. Honey reduces inflammation and hydrates and can be mixed with any of the other exfoliants mentioned above to boost the antioxidant and anti-bacterial benefits.

JOZ SALON & SPA
A HEALING TOUCH Many believe that reflexology can be very beneficial to a person’s organs and personal health. Here are a few things you should know before you try it.
R
eflexology is a spa treatment where the therapist works on ‘reflex points’ on your feet, hands and head (especially ears). The theory behind this practice is that these reflex points relate to specific organs and glands in the body, and stimulating them by applying pressure can promote health in the corresponding organs through the body's energetic pathways. Joz Salon & Spa’s skilled practitioner explains by saying: “Reflexology is a deeply relaxing treatment with benefits that can be felt throughout the body. The therapist will use various techniques that include holds, finger pressure, kneading, rotation and rubbing. The best therapists also include hands and feet as part of the reflexology treatment and you should feel an effect through the entire
body. If they are less skilled or inadequately trained, you'll just feel like you've had a very long foot massage.”
THEORY The underlying theory behind reflexology is that there are ‘reflex’ areas on the feet and hands that correspond to specific organs, glands and other parts of the body. For example, the tips of the toes reflect the head; the heart and chest are around the ball of the foot; the liver, pancreas and kidney are in the arch of the foot; and the lower back and intestines are towards the heel. People may opt for this therapy for various reasons including stress and stress-related conditions; tension headaches; digestive disorders; arthritis; insomnia; hormonal imbalances; sports injuries; menstrual disorders, such as premenstrual syndrome; digestive problems, such as constipation; and back pain. Reflexology is a popular alternative therapy. It promotes relaxation, improves circulation, reduces pain, soothes tired feet and encourages overall healing. Consultant general surgeon at Royal Bahrain Hospital (RBH) Dr Stephen Angamuthu explains: “Obesity almost always leads to a number of other chronic health conditions, which we call co-morbidities, examples include cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type II diabetes, pulmonary dysfunction, osteoarthritis, gallbladder disease, cancer [breast and colon] and many others.” However, it is difficult to shed all the excess fat through just diet and exercise as many find the most rigorous of diets and exercise routines difficult to follow or are unsuccessful. Dr Angamuthu explains bariatric surgery and how it’s performed at RBH. “This surgery is the perfect option for those who want a permanent solution if a conservative line fails,” he says. “Millions of people worldwide have undergone bariatric surgery successfully, and in most cases
Dr Stephen Angamuthu
the risks that arise from remaining obese are greater than that of undergoing surgery. “We have adopted the modern, minimallyinvasive techniques to be used whenever the case allows it. These procedures have made bariatric surgery even safer and include
less bleeding and shorter post-operation recovery times.” In order to combat the rising rate of obesity in Bahrain, Dr Angamuthu recommends people to assess their weight and choose their options. “If you choose bariatric surgery, you will finally see all the beneficial effects it will have on your health, which have been confirmed by numerous studies,” he says. “For example, you will prevent obesity-related diseases, have an extended life span, increased energy and selfesteem, and, of course, lose weight. The average weight loss expected over three years is 62 per cent of the excess weight. “To know if you’re a good candidate for bariatric surgery, schedule an appointment with a trusted surgeon who has performed this operation.” Call 17 246-800 or visit www.royalbahrainhospital.com for appointments and more information.

After the Stork It is not only during pregnancy and labour that a woman faces physical and emotional challenges. Behnaz Sanjana asks some pertinent questions related to postpartum care.
T
he birth of a baby is a milestone event in a woman’s life, and a much celebrated one at that. A great deal of information is available on the stages of pregnancy and the actual episode of birth; but, thereafter, the spotlight (in general) is mainly on the baby’s wellbeing, leaving new mums and the niggles they face in a grey area. Dr Vandana Kumar, obstetrics and gynecology specialist at Bahrain Specialist Hospital, feels we often fail to acknowledge the colossal adjustments the woman and her family have to make in the period after birth and the profound psychological, social and domestic changes that occur in this critical period. She says: “Childbirth can affect a woman both physically and psychologically. Physically it is a period of intense ‘labour’ and most definitely results in fatigue and body, pelvic and perineal pain, which resolves within a few days. The uterus, which has grown exponentially during pregnancy, takes about six to eight weeks to come back to its pre-pregnancy size. Perineal tears and lacerations tend to heal rapidly in the two to three weeks postpartum.” Dr Vandana goes on to say that the pressure of the baby’s head on the bladder, urethra and the nerves in the pelvic area can cause
68
April 2016
To avoid infections, you need to eat well and eat right during this period. Stay hydrated some disturbances in the function of bowel and bladder for a few days to weeks. She adds: “After vaginal childbirth, there can be soreness and discomfort from the episiotomy or perineal tears, even in those with an intact perineum. These will heal in three to four weeks. The bleeding and discharge (lochia) can continue for a few weeks, too.” After childbirth, the body slowly gathers itself to get back to normal. The high levels of pregnancy hormones begin to nosedive, putting the body through many changes. A very common complaint new mothers have is about their crowning glory. “Women claim that their hair becomes thinner, frizzier and coarser after childbirth. The explanation for
the thinness, at least, is that the changes in hormonal levels cause hair loss more rapidly once you've given birth,” says Dr Vandana. “During pregnancy, extra oestrogen elongates the growth cycle of your hair, causing less hair to fall out. Hair is fuller and most lustrous www.womanthismonth.com
It is important to make time to go out and visit friends and discuss your feelings with your partner, family or other mothers during the last trimester. Once oestrogen levels return to normal, there is hair fall. The rate of hair growth and loss will get back to normal in about nine months to a year.” Although, traditionally, the postnatal period is thought to last six weeks, our expert claims that it takes up to a year for a woman to recover completely from childbirth. Some amount of pelvic widening that happens during delivery might even persist. A lesser known fact, that many new mothers are unaware of, is the weakening of immunity after delivery. It is a time when new infections set in or ones smoldering during pregnancy flare up. “To avoid infections, you need to eat well and eat right during this period. Stay hydrated. Continue using multivitamin supplements, including vitamin D and calcium, and make sure you are up to date on immunisations. Most importantly, get enough rest,” advises our expert. Another term often heard while talking about the after effects of child birth is ‘baby blues’, wrongly interchanged with postpartum depression. “We need to differentiate between these two distinct conditions. Baby blues, or postnatal blues, typically occur in 50-70 per cent of women. The associated anxiety is usually focused on breastfeeding and its onset often coincides with the milk 'coming in' on the third or fourth day. It is often precipitated following a particularly poor night of sleep that may have included vivid nightmares. “The baby blues usually encompass mood swings, sadness, anxiety, crying spells, feeling overwhelmed, loss of appetite or trouble sleeping, and last a few days or a week. The symptoms are not severe and do not need treatment, and the cause of baby blues is probably a combination of psychosocial factors and hormonal factors,” explains Dr Vandana. The symptoms of postnatal depression, on www.womanthismonth.com
the other hand, can occur any time in the year following delivery and are more severe, such as suicidal feelings or thoughts of harming the baby, and most definitely need to be treated. “Seek medical help if your baby blues don’t go away after two weeks, become more intense, develop into thoughts of harming yourself or your baby and hamper your everyday life,” the doctor warns. Another issue that many women experience around the time of birth or after it is pelvic floor dysfunction. “The pelvic floor is the complex of muscles and ligaments that support the pelvic organs, including the uterus, bladder
and rectum. Vaginal delivery is known to be associated with trauma to the pelvic floor. In some cases, this can lead to issues with urinary or bowel incontinence and pelvic organ descent (sagging of inner organs) or sexual dissatisfaction; either immediately postpartum or in the woman's later years,” Dr Vandana informs. She goes on to explain that as the fetal head passes through the vagina during normal delivery, some of the attachments of the pelvic organs and nerves are pulled away and injured, causing sagging later on. Avoiding prolonged and early pushing during the second stage of labour and good perineal support might prevent these problems to a certain extent. Also, performing Kegel’s perineal and abdominal exercises in the postnatal period helps in prevention. So how does a woman ensure her sanity in this period of dramatic changes? Dr Vandana gives us some pointers: “Even though you may be very excited and have requests for lots of visits from family and friends, try to limit visitors and get as much rest as possible in the first few days after childbirth.” She advocates sleeping whenever the baby is asleep and asking family and friends for help. “It is important to make time to go out and visit friends and discuss your feelings with your partner, family or other mothers. Avoid making major life changes during pregnancy or right after giving birth to spare you unnecessary stress. Try to arrange support and help in your new situation ahead of time.” April 2016

Taking Your Breath Away Dr Jinan Harith Darwish explains the triggers for anaphylactic reactions and aspects of avoidance and treatment. Anaphylaxis has been recently defined as “a serious allergic reaction that is rapid in onset and may cause death in an otherwise healthy individual”. Though avoidance of food allergens is critical, timely administration of epinephrine is also crucial in the management of food-induced anaphylaxis.
F
ood-induced anaphylaxis is the common variant of the condition treated in emergency departments around the world. Peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish are, for the most part, commonly implicated. Foodinduced anaphylaxis may occur in any age group and with any food. However, fatalities disproportionately affect adolescents and young adults with peanut and tree nut allergy. People who have both a food allergy and asthma are at a higher risk of food-induced anaphylaxis fatality. Delayed administration of epinephrine is also associated with fatal outcomes. Any food can cause anaphylaxis in a vulnerable individual, although in the USA and Germany, peanuts and tree nuts (walnuts, pecans, pistachios, cashews and others) account for the greatest proportion of severe anaphylactic reactions. Shellfish (crustaceans and molluscs) and fish follow. In other parts of the world, foods that are prominent in the regional diet are chief culprits, including sesame in Israel and seafood in China. Additional observations include the following: • Milk, egg and sesame are more frequent culprits in children.
70
April 2016
• Fatal food-induced anaphylactic reactions may be induced by peanuts, tree nuts and cow's milk. • Wheat sensitivity is one of the most common causes in food-dependent, exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIAn), although shellfish, celery, other cereal grains and a variety of foods have been implicated. • Certain mammalian meats (particularly beef, lamb and pork) can cause anaphylaxis that is delayed in onset by a number of hours, occasionally waking individuals in the middle of the night. While meat is not a common cause of food-induced anaphylaxis, awareness of its distinctive presentation is critical to identifying the guilty food.
It is essential that people with foodinduced anaphylaxis receive an in-depth assessment to identify and confirm the culprit food allergen. Defining the patient's food allergies with certainty allows for the following: • Effectual evasion without unwarranted dietary restrictions. • Enhanced observance with avoidance recommendations. • Reduction of patient/caregiver apprehension linked with an unidentified trigger. Definitive diagnosis of food allergy is often not straightforward. It customarily requires skin testing and/or in vitro testing, sometimes followed by supervised food challenges to make certain that the correct food has been identified. Effective avoidance requires ongoing education, meticulous attention to food labelling and avoidance of situations where foods are commonly cross-contaminated: eg buffets, areas where negligible allergenic ingredients are often present, such as Asian cuisine restaurants, or where food allergens may become aerosolised, such as in seafood restaurants. Epinephrine can restrict and reverse the allergic reaction and should be administered immediately, or as quickly as possible, following the correct steps. Delayed administration is believed to be a contributing factor in some deaths. In a study of 13 fatal or near-fatal foodinduced anaphylactic reactions in children, six of the seven children who survived received epinephrine within 30 minutes of ingesting the allergen, whereas only two of the six children who died received epinephrine within the first hour. Epinephrine auto-injectors are often prescribed for those with a known allergy and it’s recommended to learn and practise their correct usage and carry two at all times. g www.womanthismonth.com

PARENTING | coaching
The Coaching Approach Have you ever wondered about the impact coaching could have on your parenting style and how it could help to build positive relationships? Expert Leire García Galardi explores the options.
C
oachME Parenting is one way to explore options to help your family be productive, happy and content. The company offers oneon-one, triad or group coaching as well as workshops. The specialists co-create strategies for parents to work with their children around mutual respect, developing a sense of identity, clean language and establishing a supportive, open environment. Some of the key aspects of this approach are: Clear communication. Are you able to say well done? Do you provide enough praise and encouragement? You are in control of the language you use, so play around with rephrasing your sentences with a positive spin. Coaching around self-image and clean language will help you communicate more clearly and more effectively with your child. Identity and respect. Do you have a preconceived idea about how you would like your child to be? How fair and realistic are your expectations? Have you asked what your child would like? Do you know what their hopes and dreams are? Coaching will provide practical strategies to help you see your child the way they want to see themselves and will illuminate what their hopes, dreams and aspirations really are. Building an alliance. Do you talk about punishment and consequences of behaviour then not follow through? Does your child know
that you don’t do what you say? Do you keep your promises? Coaching around the alliance will enable you and your child to understand what is and is not acceptable and where the lines are drawn. Once expectations are clear then there will be clarity, transparency and respect from both sides. This will make dealing with conflict much easier. Acknowledging emotions. Does your family speak about feelings and emotions? Is your home a place where your child can openly talk to you about their feelings? Coaching around emotional awareness will help families deal with this challenging area by using empathy to build strength, trust and a supportive environment. Self-esteem. When your child speaks to you, do you give them your full attention? Do you check your phone or emails when talking to your child? What impact does your behaviour have on your child? Coaching

around these ideas will increase your child’s sense of self-worth, improve their self-esteem and improve lines of communication. Using powerful coaching questions is an effective tool to deepen knowledge about your child and also to develop your relationship; listening, really listening, is also tremendously important. Leire García Galardi is a parenting coach. She has lived internationally for 20 years and has experienced many different ways of raising children. She affirms: “I really believe there is not one way to do it right but I do know there is ONE thing that really matters and this is the relationship you establish with your children. CoachME Parenting is about developing a deep connection with your child based on strength and trust.” Bahrain-based Caroline Beckett is a CoachME programme director, a professional coach, trainer and instructional designer with BMC International in the field of learning and development. Mums’ Meet-up…With Dinosaurs The dinosaurs are coming to Bahrain and we’re giving readers the chance to get up close and personal with an exclusive mums and kids event.
W
e’re always keen to engage with our readers, so when we heard about The Centrepoint Animal Park Bahrain 2016, we thought it would be the ideal place to launch our new Mums’ Meet-ups – monthly events at which mums and kids can get together, have fun and make new friends. The animal park, which comes to the Kingdom from April 21-May 21, will consist of 12 large animal exhibits depicting stars of the animal kingdom past and present such as dinosaurs, including the giant T-Rex, and favourites like polar bears, giant pandas and white tigers.
www.womanthismonth.com
There’ll also be film star beasts King Kong, Godzilla and the Red Dragon alongside attractions such as walking dinosaurs and animal rides. These animal exhibits are truly impressive to see, sized up to 8m high and 22m long they all display a range of state-of-the art animatronics – with moving parts, eyes blinking with LED lights, mouths opening with sound, wagging tails and special effects such as smoke and fire breathing from Godzilla and the Red Dragon. The park will also have a kids’ arena where children can play with small animal models and walking and cowboy dinosaurs will be
roaming around. The Animal Park is being established by Dubai-based CAC events in partnership with ROI Marketing Consultancy WLL, Bahrain, and we’ve teamed up with them to get exclusive access for our first Mums’ Meet-up on April 24 from 10am-1pm — the park will usually only be open to schools on weekday mornings. Spaces are limited, so if you’d like to join us please register your attendance and the number of children you will be bringing by emailing mums@womanthismonth.com and look out for more exciting announcements both on the day and in the coming months. g

ROOM TO BLOOM
A child’s bedroom is their place for creative licence and forging an identity as they grow into mature individuals. Behnaz Sanjana gathers some practical pointers on how to go about making it something to remember their childhood by.
T
he experience of decorating a baby’s nursery or a child’s bedroom is always an exhilarating one, in which you can unleash your creativity to play around with ideas you normally wouldn’t use in the rest of your living area. THEMES AND COLOURS – Gone are the days when the norm dictated blue for boys and pink for girls. There are myriad colour combinations to choose from to make your little ones’ rooms bright and creatively inspiring. These days, kids’ rooms are a combination of colours like melon and meadow green or navy blue accents on khaki walls. Curtains and bed linen in bold hues can be paired with pastel walls for a cheerful effect that’s not too overpowering. It’s prudent to remember that the room should be able to ‘grow’ with the child. Use colours that you can combine in new ways to keep the room ageappropriate as your kids get older. It is quite likely your child will outgrow walls painted with Disney characters in a year or two. Another great idea is to theme the room. Depending on your child’s age and interests, choose wall stickers, wallpaper and room accessories that reflect the chosen theme. Think of schemes revolving around sports, storybooks, cartoon characters or even foreign
74
April 2016
countries that your child has visited or hopes to see. The ceiling can be used to add dramatic effect. For a magical, fairytale look, hang sheer fabric from the ceiling to flow over the edges of the bed like a canopy. If your child is a budding explorer, cover the ceiling with elements of the solar system, or the continents of the world.
STOWING IT AWAY – Don’t let the Lego take over your home. For this, it is necessary to provide adequate storage solutions in a child’s room, whatever their age. Parents often battle with toys strewn about everywhere, not only in the kids’ rooms. Huge plastic trunks or bins on wheels for containing toys and related knick-knacks are easy on the www.womanthismonth.com
eye as well as the pocket. Label them for your child to remember what goes in where. Cabinets and cupboards within easy reach can encourage kids to be responsible for their own things. Hang their school uniforms in a place where they can easily reach them every morning. PLAY PLACE – More often than not, a child’s bedroom doubles up as a playroom. So keep in mind that you actually need to factor in space where your child can actually spend hours playing, reading or discovering things. A playful rug on the floor instantly demarcates an area on which toys can be strewn around to tinker with. If space permits, assign an area to be your child’s go-to place; a cosy reading nook, a hammock swinging across the room, or even a small pop-up tent. Parents will vouch that no matter how many colouring books they are surrounded with, little fingers always end up dressing the walls with crayons. Your solution? Give them a wall (or a part of it) for their artistic endeavours. Decorate a wall with chalkboard paint on which children can make their doodles, scribble their thoughts and let their creativity flow. An alternative is to cover a wall with construction paper, to give them a place to express themselves, at the same time protecting the underlying wall space. FURNITURE FOREVER – A bed in the shape of a racing car or a ship can be fun to fall asleep in. A child’s room should, by all means, have www.womanthismonth.com
things that are fun for their age, but a few wise investments can last a lifetime. A vintage rocking chair in your baby’s nursery is a handy piece for putting her to sleep, and can then graduate to being the best place to ponder in for a teenager. A beautiful chest of drawers can be functional in the early years and a meaningful memento when a child moves into a new home. A sturdy study table will serve its purpose for many years. SAFETY MATTERS – As with everything revolving around children, safety in a child’s room is imperative. Not to say that you need a fire engine stationed at the door at all times, but a few practical pointers can prevent serious accidents.
- Cover all electric points with socket covers. Loose wires trailing the floor can be tripped over, or chewed on by teething toddlers. - Leave heavy items (like large storage boxes) on the floor, and not on the top shelves of an open cabinet. - Avoid hanging heavy mirrors or picture frames over the bed. - Use safety latches on pull-out drawers. - All items in the room must be unbreakable. Avoid glass objects at all costs! - Beds of younger children should be away from windows. April 2016

Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Oman The Omani Tourist Board has as its slogan ‘Beauty has an address – Oman’, and it’s really not wrong as Liz O’Reilly discovered on a recent trip.
M
uch as I love Bahrain for its feeling of home and the friendliness of the Bahraini people, there is something special about Oman with its dramatic mountains and lush greenery. After a busy few weeks at work, to say my travelling companion and I were looking forward to a weekend’s getaway would be something of an understatement. We took an afternoon flight and just an hour and a half later touched down in the land of green turtles, monsoon and the Queen of Sheba. I love that, in Oman, the taxi counter at the airport tells you the cost of your journey before you step on board. And, at 15 riyals for a trip of almost 50 minutes, getting to our destination in the Al Hajar Mountains was very reasonable. We stayed in Al Husn, Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah’s stunning ‘Castle by the Sea’, the most exclusive of the resort’s three hotels, where guests have access to a child-free infinity pool and private beach – something of which my frazzled mum mates have declared themselves extremely jealous. Our first evening was spent enjoying Omani lobster accompanied by barbecued local tuna and Wagyu beef on the terrace of the international à la carte restaurant, Sultanah. We were delighted to find we’d arrived in time for the weekly jazz night, the strains of the double bass and sax adding to the already super-chilled atmosphere.

The turtle ranger
After an extremely comfortable night’s sleep (shame the pillows wouldn’t fit in my suitcase), the next morning saw us heading out to meet Mohammed Al Hassani, the region’s one and only turtle ranger. Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah lies along a stretch of Oman’s coastline where both green and hawksbill turtles come to nest. And it’s Mohammed’s job to help visitors enjoy a unique turtle experience without putting the endangered creatures at risk. Females will cross thousands of nautical miles,
returning to the beach of their birth to lay their eggs in a deep hole they dig in the sand with their flippers. Once laid, mum returns to the water and the eggs are left to incubate for around 60 days before the baby turtles hatch and set out on their perilous dash to the water – the bit everyone wants to see. Mohammed showed us several nest sites where, below the sand, the eggs were heating up and the babies preparing to make their debut. He keeps track of when each batch was laid and each nest is labelled with an www.womanthismonth.com

approximate hatching date. Sadly, no babies showed their faces during our trip but that’s a great excuse to return (our next visit’s already booked). I was fascinated as to how one gets to be an official turtle ranger and, while showing us round the impressive marine education centre that’s due to open for World Environment Day in June, Mohammed explained that he’s been rescuing and looking out for turtles since he was 12 years old. Born in a village a few minutes along the coast, the local environmental agency was aware of his work and when Shangri-La was looking for a turtle specialist he was, of course, the logical choice for the job – now it was my turn to be just a little bit jealous. Driving round the beaches with Mohammed we spotted the lazy river kids’ ride at the nearby Al Bander Hotel. Designed especially for families, this part of the resort has a full-on entertainment programme and we vowed to take an early morning ride on one of the blowup river tubes. However, since our trip was all about relaxation, our next stop had to be Chi, The Spa. So luxurious is this tranquil haven that you don’t just get a treatment room but rather a whole villa, complete with Jacuzzi bath! I opted for a medium-firm massage with almond and bergamot oil which left my skin feeling silky and my legs akin to jelly. Not wanting to waste the feeling of total relaxation, we headed to Al Husn’s private beach for a couple of hours of total chilling before heading into Muscat to explore the traditional Muttrah Souq. For those who have only ever experienced Bahrain’s souq, this place is a joy. Filled with tiny alleyways and interesting little shops, here you can find everything from a cooking pot to an Aladdin’s lamp. We stumbled, almost by accident, on one store filled with bins and www.womanthismonth.com
shelves teeming with old, tarnished silver. After several minutes of determined rummaging, I’d found earrings and a bracelet which shone brightly after a quick wipe with a silver cloth by the shopkeeper. To determine the price he weighed my choices and then it was down to some serious bargaining; I thought I showed a remarkable talent for barter until I later saw my travelling companion walk away with a gorgeous sapphire necklace for less than half the original asking price! Like souqs the world over, Muttrah does have its fair share of what we used to call “lookey, lookey men”, those who will try and entice you into their shops with promises of pashminas, lamps, bangles and assorted other tat. But it also has a huge number of proper, traditional vendors from cloth sellers to stalls piled with gold and frankincense — and probably myrrh too, had I but looked. We dined on the corniche at a restaurant just upstairs from the souq entrance called, Al Husn lobby
imaginatively, the Cornish Restaurant. The shish tawook and hummous were divine but the waiter grumpy. I’d recommend it if you don’t require your service to come with a smile. Back at the hotel, we considered checking out some of the many entertainment options; there’s a bar with live music and more than 20 food and drink outlets to choose from. But, after a long and busy day, I was more than happy to settle down on the balcony with a nightcap to listen to the waves crashing onto the nearby headland. Situated in a sheltered bay, Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah looks like a traditional Arabic town; it’s on several levels to take account of its mountain setting and feels very secure. But all the rooms have sea views and, as you look out to the Indian Ocean, you’re very aware that the wild depths are never far away. I’ve dived off Oman before, and can highly recommend it, but this time I was looking for adventure above the waves. Next morning saw me heading to the Extra Divers Centre for a dolphin safari. The marine life along this coast is rich and varied and we set off in a speedboat in the hope of spotting some of it. I’m a big fan of dolphins in the wild but, if you take this sort of trip, you must be aware that they are just that — wild — and they may not choose to grace you with their presence. Which is what happened on this occasion. I’d been booked on the early morning tour, which did come across Flipper and friends. However, having overslept, I took the later trip and spent a very pleasant but, sadly, dolphinfree couple of hours experiencing life on the ocean wave. Back at the resort we headed back to the beach and spent a delightful couple of hours chilling before it was time to head back to the airport. We’d been in Oman just 48 hours but it seemed like we’d been a world away. April 2016

At this venue you eat in the company of innumerable underwater species in the heart of the Indian Ocean. Have a taste of its exquisite food as the vivid sea life watches you from above.
Going by the popular saying that the three most important things in a property are 'location, location and location', these restaurants have surly hit the jackpot, offering some of the most unparalleled dining experiences imaginable.
Fangweng, China
Ristorante Grotta Palazzese, Italy Open only during the summer months, this restaurant in Puglia, Italy, is created inside a vaulted limestone cave, looking outwards toward the sea and offering some of the most breath-taking views. Part of the Grotta Palazzese hotel located above, the restaurant juts out 22 metres above sea level, allowing diners to watch the waves lap the shores just beneath them. The dramatic view over the sea is best enjoyed from one of the dimly-lit tables for two that sweep along the cave's edge.

It’s often packaged food that you associate with a trekking trip in the mountains; but not if you are in the Hubei Province of China. About 12KM north of Yichang city, you can actually experience fine-dining on the side of a cliff at the Fangweng hanging restaurant. Located in the Happy Valley of Xiling Gorge, the restaurant offers astounding views of its natural surroundings to adventurers brave enough to set foot in it. A 30-metre-long, narrow concrete bridge leads to a warmly-lit dining hall carved into the cliff-side.

showcase BEHBEHANI BROTHERS
A NEW LOOK PERFECTED The new Volkswagon Passat is here and has had a serious facelift. WTM’s Apple Sharma took this mid-size sedan for a ride to see its appeal as a family car.
W
hen most women think about getting a new family car, we look for the same things as we do in a man – one that is loyal, dependable and someone you feel safe with. Looks, of course, are always a bonus. So when I test drove the new 2016 Volkswagon Passat, not only did it deliver on the reliability front but also on the aesthetics. It was like going out on a date with your best friend’s good looking brother! Passat has always enjoyed a reputation of being refined, stylish and sophisticated, but the new model is all the more impressive. If family resemblances are anything to go by, the new Passat is definitely the more handsome sibling of the two. Its striking new design and innovative technology maks it more than just a family car. Not only does it look great, with sleek lines on the hood and an aggressive front grille, but it also drives like a dream. Talking about appearances, new features include chrome accents running throughout the exterior; futuristic-looking full LED headlights and taillights; corner-illuminating foglights; new front fenders; front and rear bumpers; 16-inch alloy wheels; Park Distance Control; the list goes on. It’s fair to say that good looks run in the family. One of the features I found truly impressive was the hands-free Easy Open Trunk (boot for our British readers). Loading your shopping is a breeze, even with the door locked. All you have to do is keep the key in your pocket and www.womanthismonth.com
just swipe your foot underneath the boot and voila the lid pops open magically. The other handy feature is the power side mirrors with memory and power-folding feature, so you can park in tight spaces without the fear of getting your mirrors knocked off or having to adjust them constantly. Another cool function is the Climatronic dual-zone automatic climate control, so no more fights about whether it’s too hot or too cold. The physical attraction is all very well, but what’s on the inside counts the most. Well, the interiors of the new Passat are equally impressive. The leatherette seats with contrast piping are stylish, comfortable and easy to keep clean. The moment you plug your compatible smart phone into the USB port, you make an instant connection with the VW App-Connect car suite that lets you access select apps straight onto your touchscreen dashboard using Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or MirrorLink. The second-generation in-car infotainment system, also known as MIB II by Volkswagen, features easy-to-use touchscreens (standard equipment on all models) that enable swiping and pinchzooming rather than resistive ones that require pressure. With all these controls literally at the tip of your fingers on the new multi-functional sporty steering wheel, you’re ready to rock 'n' roll! Talking about music, one of my favourite features of the car was its Fender premium audio system, boasting nine-
speakers, including a subwoofer. The sound is crystal-clear, whether you’re chatting with your mates on the phone over Bluetooth or listening to your favourite tunes; in my case it was Baz Lurhmann’s The Sunscreen Song on full blast! School runs will never be the same again. Above anything else, safety takes top priority and the new Passat has it all covered with features like the Intelligent Crash Response System and the seven stability-enhancing systems that are engineered to help protect actively or passively. Now comes the most important part of convincing the hubby why the Passat is the perfect family car for you. If all of the above doesn’t impress him much, then memorise these details – under the bonnet is a fivecylinder, 2.5-litre petrol engine, with an output of 125 kW (170bhp) and a six-speed automatic tiptronic gearbox. When you start talking numbers, it’s sure to pique his interest, and the most important of all is the price, which starts at BD8,800 inclusive of three years/45K free service, three years roadside assist and five years/unlimited mileage extended warranty. The new Passat, in my opinion, is a great contender for a family car but try it for yourself. Visit www.facebook.com/ volkswagenbahrain or follow Instagram: VolkswagenBH. April 2016

BMW GROUP
THE FUTURE OF AN ICON
As one of the world’s most reputed brands, this company celebrated its centenary in style.
T
his year sees the BMW Group celebrate its centenary under the motto ‘The Next 100 Years’. Throughout its history, the company’s image has been defined by a future focus and pioneering action – all made possible by its extraordinary team of employees, who share a fascination for mobility which is integral to all our lives. “At the BMW Group, we are always on a quest for the best solution. It’s part of our DNA,” says Harald Krüger, chairman of the board of management of BMW AG. “It’s also the spirit of our collaborations, a recurring theme that permeates our corporate and leadership culture.” Three qualities in particular set the BMW Group apart: the capacity to learn and adapt, technological innovation, and a sense of responsibility toward society. “We have demonstrated on many occasions throughout our history that we are capable of learning fast and taking bold steps,” Krüger says.
Against this background, the BMW Group’s centenary celebrations are set to focus primarily on what lies ahead and explore how individual mobility might develop over the coming decades. To answer this question, the BMW Group has generated a futuristic scenario with a clear vision: premium mobility by the BMW Group will be completely effortless, comprehensively available and tailored to every customer’s individual preferences. At the moment, the world is on the verge of realising automated driving; in the not-too-distant future the majority of cars will probably be completely self-driving and travel the streets of cities inhabited by far more people than today. In the future, one thing will be in ever shorter supply: time. But connectivity will become increasingly commonplace, and technologies will learn to learn from people. “Future mobility will connect every area of people’s lives. And that’s where we see
new opportunities for premium mobility,” Krüger adds. The BMW Group has now made its vision for the future a reality – with the BMW Vision Next 100. This vehicle combines coupé-type sportiness with the dynamic elegance of a sedan – but rather than being an anonymous transport machine, it is a highly customised vehicle that is perfectly tailored to suit the driver’s changing needs. Driver-vehicle interactions are managed by Alive Geometry; Boost and Ease modes offer a choice of driver-controlled or vehiclecontrolled operations, and the interior of the vehicle changes to suit the mode of travel. The BMW Vision Vehicle made its world debut at the Centenary Event in the Munich Olympic Hall – exactly one hundred years after the company that is now known as BMW AG was first entered into the commercial register. A Full Spectrum of Flavours Ankita Mamgain’s quest for a delicious barbecue meal takes her to this neighbourhood gem.
I
find the concept of a traditional backyard barbie a bit odd – in a good way. It is certainly something special; kids, adults, all look forward to it. No matter how low-key, it invariably ends up becoming an event, resulting is large quantities of food and a communal experience enveloped in tantalising smoky goodness. The strange part is how it also qualifies as comfort food for so many. The innumerable grill shops around the island are testimony to how much we love our meat on a skewer and what comforts it brings us. Having discussed this topic all day, a colleague and I found ourselves at the recently launched Kolors restaurant in The K Hotel for its barbecue theme night. Kolors is the hotel’s all-day-dining venue and is located where Klouds used to be. Sporting a refreshed look that is bathed in natural light and vibrant colours, the eatery offers an upscale and comfortable ambience. The walls are adorned with paintings and the blank canvas of the restaurant is beautifully punctuated by solid colours. Located at lobby level, it also has a coffee shop extension with a glass display of delicious cakes and desserts. At the buffet the food was laid out in five, neatly arranged sections. Two of these are dedicated to a selection of mezze and salads. There was the counter with marinated cuts of meat, chicken and

fish and, towards the other end, were soups and breads, some hot starters and colourful fruits and desserts. The open grill filled the air with delicious meaty aromas, and further fuelled our hunger at the end of a long work day. We headed straight to select our main course as it was to be freshly cooked and served at the table. I chose chicken breast in a fiery red marinade, some dory and chicken in a creamy marinade. My colleague went for lamb chops, spicy beef, dory and creamy chicken. While we were waiting, we chatted over chicken lollypop and a medley of delicious salads; my favourites were potato and chickpea and the cold cut salad accompanied with a refreshing glass of sparking grape The most stellar part of the evening began
when our grills arrived; deliriously aromatic, juicy and packed with flavour. When you say grills here, it’s not just a slab of meat. These gourmet preparations employ meticulous technique, a selection of carefully measured local and exotic herbs, a delicate balance of spices and a plethora of condiments. The offerings of the otherwise humble grill, at this restaurant are fit for royalty. Though really full, we managed to save some room for dessert which brought this experience to a fitting end. It turned out to be just the right choice for our barbecue dinner as the restaurant has a unique vibe which makes the place very special, yet there’s a sense of familiarity and instant comfort that makes you feel right at home.

2 garlic cloves 60g tomatoes 16g thyme 400ml water Sea salt and freshly ground pepper - 60ml extra virgin olive oil
Method: Clean the lamb rack and trim it very neatly, keeping only one bone. Season the meat with salt and pepper and sear in a hot pan with a little olive oil. Apply a little mustard on top of the meat. Grate the pistachio and make a crust with a little olive oil while the meat is still hot. Put it in a preheated oven at 120°C and cook further for just for seven to
eight minutes. Confit the cherry tomatoes by roasting them in olive oil and salt and pepper in the oven at 225°C until they are swollen and the skins are wrinkled. Scoop up the vegetables with a pearl scooper and boil in hot water till they become tender. Toss in olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast the butternut squash until soft; purée it and season it as per your taste and set aside. Lamb jus: Preheat the oven to 180°C, place the bones in a roasting tray and roast until they are golden brown in colour. In a stockpot gently fry the peeled and roughly chopped onions, celery, carrots and garlic, until lightly browned, add the tomatoes and keep stirring continuously until most of the moisture has evaporated,
then add the thyme and cook until the mix thickens. Add the bones and the water to the stock pot and bring it to the boil. Reduce the heat and gently simmer for 20-30 minutes; continue to skim off any fat that rises to the surface. Remove from the heat, pass the stock through a fine sieve into a suitably sized saucepan, skim off any fat and, over moderate heat, slowly reduce the stock to sauce consistency, pass the jus through cheesecloth and keep aside. Assembling: Take a suitable plate, place the butternut squash purée in the middle with the lamb rack on top of it. Arrange the pearl vegetables accordingly, garnish with herbs and cress. Jus can be either put straight on the lamb or served separately.

Star
Gazing Raphael tells us what’s written in the stars this month Aries
Scorpio
Some of you may have suffered a setback on the health front and the start of April may not have opened as well as you would have liked. However, the key to getting yourself back on track is self-belief and a strict adherence to any instructions a key medical advisor gives you. If you want to get better then you need to follow the programme. Otherwise you’ll have no one to blame but yourself.
Sagittarius
April will start with a bang for many of you as you find yourself thrown straight into the deep end where work is concerned. The scale of the project you have been presented with is something you may not have appreciated when you originally signed on but there’s no turning back so engage the challenge and you’ll emerge better for it at the end. This is actually a huge opportunity for you if you’re prepared to meet it.
You probably feel that even though there are emotional problems in your life needing to be resolved, you are in fact at present on top of the world. Romantically and creatively you are the most potent you have been for a while and the two are feeding each other, making now the best time for you to reach for your goals like never before. If you’re looking to change jobs, a complete departure into a new profession may also be right now.
Taurus
Capricorn
Relationships are important for your sign and, with April marking a high point for Taureans, it won’t be an exaggeration to suggest that many of you have something special up your sleeve. On the work front, big news and big opportunities will reach you towards the 28th and you will have to hit the ground running to get the best from them. This is a very special moment in your life Taurus, so make the most of it.
Gemini
Leo
April sets fresh challenges for your sign in several key areas of your life and whilst it all might seem a little daunting, at least the month won’t be boring! Finances, work, relationships and health all demand different levels of attention but none are insurmountable and if you believe in your own abilities there shouldn’t be any hurdle you can’t manage.
Money has been a major feature in your life recently but in a relationship particularly, it has proven a sore point on a number of occasions. However, you need to perhaps bite your tongue a little in April otherwise you might find someone else close to you bites if off! Whilst you do have a generous nature, you also possess the need to control matters in your life and to a lesser extent, in the lives of those close to you.
Aquarius
The messenger of impending change is about to deliver what could be the most difficult alteration to your structured life so far. You may have anticipated his arrival but that does not make things any easier to deal with and the effect all this will have on you is likely to be painful. The problem could relate to a child and, though you might wish for things to be different, the blame lies firmly at their door so you have little right to expect a positive outcome.
Virgo
April brings with it a number of financial worries for you and cash flow could continue to be a problem until the month is out. It might mean tightening your belt and you should not be afraid of asking for help. This isn’t really the time to resort to pride. Eventually things will sort themselves out. It just won’t be as easy as you would have liked. Above all, don’t get down about matters you can’t control.
Some of you may have bitten off a lot more than you can chew this month and much of that could be down to bad advice and a degree of naivety on your own part. So, before you start looking for someone else to blame, take responsibility and then analyse the best way you can get out of the financial mess you’ve landed in. There’s no quick solution just a patient path towards resolution that won’t all be smooth sailing but will ultimately fix the issue.
Cancer
Libra
Pisces
The early part of April is going to see you reassociating yourself with a face from the past who still retains a significant pull on your life. This person’s arrival is set to raise all manner of questions and you could be led down the road of temptation under the guise of one act when in truth, your real intentions could be much more carnal. Be wary, Cancer. It might not end well... www.womanthismonth.com
After a hectic start to the first quarter of 2016, things should become a little quieter for your sign, although that isn’t necessarily how you always like it. Early April could see a mysterious letter get your curiosity rising and there could even be some harmless flirting thrown into the mix as well. Just be careful how far you take things because the other person is more serious than you realise!
Love is the number one issue on your mind this month and I guess that shouldn’t come as too much of surprise, when you consider that you are quite the romantic anyway. A chance encounter whilst travelling is going to prove the catalyst for something very special in your life and heralds the start of exciting times for you. If it’s romance you’re after then April will be full of it! April 2016
