EDITOR’S NOTE

W

hat a lot there is happening this month. All the new spring-summer fashions are finally in the shops and I've been looking through hundreds [possibly even thousands] of catwalk images to pick out the trends for the coming season. As usual, many of the designers' visions are more than a little over the top. Even the most bold and confident of us would be unlikely to venture out naked with just a shred of finest, transparent gossamer to protect our modesty [thank goodness]. I've had great fun coming up with ways to adapt the current trends to our everyday lives and I'm really looking forward to donning a bit of boho punk. Let us know your favourite trend on our social media pages. Our interview section this month includes an exclusive chat with Katrina Kaif. She's ambassador for one of the biggest fashion and lifestyle brands in the region and we met her when she visited for the launch of the latest collections. It was lovely to learn those dangerous curves don't make it to the gym every day! We also caught up with entrepreneur Francine Pinhal who's about to launch her own factory and food business. As well as new collections, spring is the time when many of us start thinking about our annual vacation. If you're not heading 'home', the decision on where to go can be a tough one. Take a look at our travel pages for a solution which covers several destinations in one go There’s also our regular round-up of fashion and beauty news, events coming up on the island and fabulous food as well as an in-depth look at insomnia in our wellbeing pages and some thoughts on the increasingly popular Mummy Makeover from a medical expert. We hope you enjoy this month's mag and would love to hear your thoughts.

On Twitter, our tweet about the exciting new Bahrain Food Festival received the highest engagement.

On Instagram, the contest giving away tickets to Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night got the highest number of likes and comments.

Your page featuring mums and daughters dressing alike made me feel nostalgic. I remember my own mother having breezy summer frocks tailormade for herself, and a mini version for me. I must have been all of seven or eight at the time. I wonder why I never thought of doing the same with my daughter. I’m off to buy us some material now, thank you very much! Rebecca.

The spring season is the time when many major brands launch their new fragrances. For its latest offering, French brand L’Occitane went back to the very source of the beauty of Provence. It wanted to find the force that breathes life into plants – the very plants that become its precious ingredients. Every trail it followed led to the light. It seemed to shift, its colours pulsing and rippling. Three perfumers worked on the creation of Terre de Lumière: Calice Becker, Shyamala Maisondieu and Nadège Le Garlantezec. “It really was a journey for us. Each one brought her own world, her own emotions. This fragrance brings together, in perfect harmony, so many sensations that come from our experiences. That’s what gives it so many facets,” they say. The fragrance truly is akin to a breath of Provencal air in a bottle. For a chance to win the 90ml eau de parfum, worth almost BD40, keep an eye on our social media page to participate.

I like the range of women you introduce your readers to. Reading about the ladies in your last issue, their life’s work and goals, provided food for thought. It was delightful to read Maya Jashanmal’s reminiscing about her years in Bahrain and Jodie Baker’s travels exploring our world and her passion for photography. Both were motivating. Lastly, it’s a relief that Bahrain has specialists like Dr Iris Brune Erber who can help women overcome some very private, yet grave, physical concerns. I’m sure the local flavour of your interviews serves to be all the more inspiring to the women of Bahrain. Naseema. Got something you want to get off your chest? Congratulations, commiserations and remonstrations all welcome. We'll carry the best ones each week.

What’s caught our eye in the news this month.

#Tasmania’s Preservation Bay has presented a magical sight to onlookers in recent days with blue glowing waters lapping on the shore. Known as bioluminescence, this phenomenon occurs when waves shake up algae or plankton cells known as Noctiluca scintillans and make them glow in the water. The algae flashes this way as a defence against predators and poses no threat to humans, although it can carry risks for shellfish. globalnews.ca #The Necker Children’s Hospital in Paris has successfully carried out the first procedure on a sickle cell disease patient that has completely rid him of any symptoms, pain or medications associated with the disease. The teenager underwent the procedure 15 months ago, where doctors removed his bone marrow and scientists genetically altered it in a lab to compensate for the defect in his DNA that caused the disease. The corrected bone marrow was then put back into the patient. bbc.com

Girl Power

The 61st session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women recently saw the launch of the Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa Global Award for Women Empowerment, which aims to recognise the achievements of individuals or establishments in the public and private sectors that support the developmental role of women as well as ensuring the highest degree of economic participation and social stability. The award was launched, on behalf of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty King Hamad and president of the Supreme Council for Women, by the Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, who said he was looking forward to supporting the activities of the commission aimed at achieving a balance between equality and the empowerment of women.

Bringing Home Medals

Young inventor Tasneem Yousif represented Bahrain at the recent 9th International Inventions Fair Middle East and came home with a silver medal for her Smart Gas System which allows the detection of toxic gasses remotely, using a mobile phone application or web-based option linked to nanotechnology robotics. Tasneem’s win came under the category of electronics and smart computing systems and she was also recognised for scientific excellence. The system was initially created as a graduation project when Tasneem was studying computer engineering and she has since gone on to develop it further. It is now at the stage where it has received a patent.

The entertainment line-up has been announced for Formula One weekend and, though we’re still waiting to hear about the expected big names, there’s loads to look forward to. We’re particularly excited about the appearances of Pedal Punk and the Flight Crew jump ropers. Good Wood

We love a success story, especially when it’s one of the family, as it were. WoodWorks, a student-run start-up led, under the guidance of Injaz Bahrain, by Simran Tiwari – sister of our very own Puja – manufactures unique Shelf-It shelves made from recycled MDF wood. The product can be used in a variety of ways to store and place almost anything. It also represents environmental conservation and comes in a variety of colours and customdesigned styles. The company works with local craftsmen and was started to enhance awareness of entrepreneurship among young people. So far, the first three batches have sold out and the founders of the company are constantly looking for ways to improve their creation. Follow woodworks on Instagram @woodworks_bh and WoodWorks Bahrain on Facebook.

Bra-vo If, like us, you have a drawer full of gently-used bras that you don’t wear but that are ‘too good’ to chuck, then we have the answer. Editor Liz was in that position when a friend left behind quite a haul of rather fancy lingerie. Hoping to hand it over to charity, she put an ask on social media and was met with a great response from Louise Wrankmore of TDK Lingerie. Faced with an ever-growing pile of bras left behind by women who’d come in for fittings and left wearing a completely different size, Louise decided to put them to good use. She got in touch with Bahrain’s women’s refuge and also the women’s prison and hopes to hand over the first batch of 500 by the end of the month. So now you know, it’s time to give the lingerie drawer a spring clean. www.womanthismonth.com

SPRING SUMMER 2017

By Liz O’Reilly The new season’s styles are finally here and we’re loving the latest looks. From bell-bottomed jeans to giant shoulders and the, seemingly incongruous, marriage of the already much-loved boho style with a dash of retro punk, this season is an everywoman mix. www.womanthismonth.com

As always, we’ve gathered together the cream of the catwalk looks and come up with some style inspiration to help you adapt them to everyday wear. Dig out your old patched jean jacket, splash out on a pair of ridiculously high platforms and get ready to embrace the new season’s trends.

This trend is all about playing peek-a-boo, using swathes of sheer fabric to appear covered but at the same time revealing flashes of skin. Legs were much in evidence on the catwalks at Carolina Herrera, Desigual, Lanvin and Viktor & Rolf with long see-through skirts offering an ethereal edge to often tough, urban looks. Paco Rabanne took the look to another level, sending models down the runway with covered heads but exposed legs sheathed in sparkling overlay, while Versace put a decidedly classic twist on the trend using sheer fabric and lace cut-outs in deepest midnight blue.

WEAR IT YOUR WAY

Perhaps not surprisingly, this trend is taking a little longer to filter down to the high street. It takes good legs and a daring spirit to encase hotpants-clad pins in sheer shimmering fabric. But if you want to get in on the act just think of it as an extension of last year’s lingerie as outerwear phase. A close-fitting body beneath a lacy shift will preserve your modesty. Not feeling quite so confident? Opt for an iridescent shell top over a lacy cami or channel your inner ballerina with a tutu-style skirt. Add interesting accessories and hold your head high.

The fashion world seems have a burgeoning love affair with the ‘80s. Last season saw the return of Dynastyesque shoulder pads and this year’s collections go a step further with outright bonkers sleeve details. From armour-like embellishments at Kenzo and Dsquared2 to flowing elongated bells at Carven, Loewe and Paul Smith. The Marc Jacobs show featured a whole range of options from discrete puffs to feather epaulettes, embroidery and frills. And Gucci – how we love Gucci – always awesomely daring, darling and slightly dotty.

There’s a dazzling array of statement sleeves available on the high street right now from cutouts at Bershka to tassels at Zadig & Voltaire. he word 'alba' is an ancient word for ‘dawn’, as used centuries ago and passed down the generations in the Spanish and Italian languages. It denotes light, hope and new beginnings. World-renowned Japanese watchmaker Seiko Watch Corporation chose this symbolic name for the unique timepiece it unveiled to the world in 1979. The line went on to become an instant sensation for its value, design and quality backed at every level by Seiko. Desigual

There’s always one that comes as a bit of a surprise and shouldn’t work but does. For us, this season, it’s the combination of boho and punk. Coach rocked both this and the transparent trend, sending models down the runway in leather and lace, flowers and studs. At Desigual is was camo with tribal face paint while Carven, Dsquared2, Marc Jacobs and Tommy Hilfiger all put legs centre stage with micro minis topped with everything from acid-wash denim to dayglo PVC.

Paler colours have had a resurgence for spring with lots of the big houses showing full-on, head-to-toe white looks to great effect. From ‘70s-inspired catsuits at Alice + Olivia to a chucked together, festival-style look with striking accessories at Desigual, the big names showed that keeping it simple doesn’t have to be boring. Carolina Herrera, Carven and Michael Kors accentuated dazzling whites with flashes of black, taupe and navy respectively, while Fenty Puma and Marc Jacobs went for slightly bonkers but nonetheless effective layered looks.

Many of us will remember these from our youth – raggedly stitching patches onto denim jackets, jeans and anything else our mums would let us get away with. It seems the fashion world has taken a step back and resurrected a look much loved in the ‘70s, with embellishment appearing on the runways at Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, Desigual and Alice + Olivia while Alexander McQueen, Anna Sui and Ralph Lauren ramped up the glamour stakes emblazoning badges and embroidery on classic leather and in cowboy style.

WEAR IT YOUR WAY

This trend yells young and fun, at the top of its voice. High street stores have embraced it with gusto, from bags to jackets, to jeans and even boots. Choose your style wisely and don’t overdo it. The patched jacket is something of a classic but, even if you’re brave enough for double denim, make sure your lower half is plain. An embellished mini will look great with a simple vest and casual wrap.

ENDURING ELEGANCE This collection from the longest serving jewellery house in the world is bound to bedazzle lovers of whimsical, vintage heirlooms.

S

ince the 1700s, exquisite jewellery designed by the House of Garrard has been passed on as priceless heritage from one generation to the next. The designs created by this royally commissioned jeweller are eternal classics that have stood the test of time, instead of pandering to temporary fashions. Having had the honour of being appointed as jewellers to the crown by Queen Victoria in 1843, the House of Garrard displayed close to 100 works of jewellery, silverware and trophies, inspired by its numerous commissions for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, both of whom shared a passion for fine design, at the Great Exhibition which took place in London in 1851. The precious pieces featured fine turquoise, beautiful blue sapphires, diamonds and other valuable gems set in quirky designs such as ‘fly’ brooches – the Queen’s personal favourite, and favoured by the Victorian people for denoting

humility and freedom. This treasure trove of pieces and the architectural design of the Crystal Palace in London’s Hyde Park, where they were exhibited over a century ago, is the very inspiration behind Garrard’s modern collection – the Enchanted Palace, which is as varied and mesmerising as the original exhibition. The range features items from small, delicate turquoise and diamond-encrusted winged creations to stunning pieces that reveal diamond or sapphire with each twist and rock crystal windows studded with diamonds. Also available are versatile, multiwear pendants and earrings with removable tassels and drops, making the collection absolutely delightful to behold. As well as paying tribute to a very important moment in Garrard’s history and the legacy that the house has given the world, the Enchanted

Palace collection celebrates the fun and whimsical side of design, as embraced by the Victorians. Each piece is a symbol of master craftsmanship. There is a breathtaking simplicity to the design but the pieces are incredibly technical in construction, thereby perfectly capturing the spirit of a bygone era. Every brilliant ornament from the Enchanted Palace collection bears the hallmark of the House of Garrard’s meticulous attention to detail, superb British design and a history of sophisticated style. Timeless pieces from this famed jeweller are brought to Bahrain by Asia Jewellers. Call Asia Jewellers, Moda Mall 17 534-444. www.womanthismonth.com

Beautiful Inside and Out Bona fide Bollywood royalty and youth icon Katrina Kaif is one of cinema’s most glamorous actresses. She is currently the brand ambassador for retail fashion giant Splash, and is featured in the latest campaign across the Middle East. BTM caught up with her to talk fashion, beauty and more.

E

minent for her chic style, the British actress and model donned two beautiful Splash ensembles and took to the ramp of a fashion show at the Mall of Emirates, Dubai, for the launch of the latest collections. Having travelled and lived around the world, she considers Mumbai in India her true heritage where identity is concerned. “Having lived there for the longest time, Mumbai is my home without a doubt,” she says. Katrina also let us in on her duties as the fashion envoy for Splash, saying: “As with any fashion campaign, the key role in promoting the brand is the visual campaign I’m doing, which is the second of the series. Splash has a very loyal fan base and is highly revered by consumers because of its passion for high street fashion, so it feels great to be a part of this.” In a quandary to choose a favourite piece, Katrina says the entire new collection has struck a special chord on her style radar. “The latest line is dreamy and beautiful, with a heavy Bohemian influence which makes it look very feminine. This works for me and I absolutely love it,” she explains. The actress isn’t one who carries any beauty essentials, and generally enjoys going au naturel when not filming on set. She says: “I always have a wonderful team of hairstylists and make-up artists on set, so I leave it up to them when shooting movies. When you spend so much time on set, the only thing you want to do is be natural and easy after you wrap up.” Katrina was thrilled to team up with actor Salman Khan for the most recent campaign, saying: “It was amazing working with him www.womanthismonth.com

again. One thing I’ve noticed is that Splash CEO Reza Baig always treats staff and peers like family. Everyone there enjoys a close-knit relationship and I have always felt welcome.” Acting is something that is second nature to the star. “When I came into films, I was always very instinctive and fully immersed myself in the movie. Every molecule inside my body was alive

on set. I think this is what makes a good movie,” she says. Blessed with glowing skin and a ravishing physique, Katrina does not follow a strict health or beauty regimen. She explains: “How you look and feel can be credited to your diet. A lot of people are conscious and know what is healthy for them. Fitness is not something I am 100 per cent consistent with, it’s something

that I go up and down on in phases. Sometimes I follow a plan, especially while filming a movie, other times I just take it easy.” And she has a special message for her fans in Bahrain. “I would love to come down and visit when there is an opportunity, probably during a film festival or similar event. For now, a big hello to everyone who watches Hindi flicks.” g April 2017

Turning Passion Into Profit Young mum Francine Pinhal tells Liz O’Reilly how she is turning her love of cooking into a unique, 100-per-cent expat-owned, business.

B

razilian Francine has been supplying friends and wordof-mouth customers with her homemade Brazilian cheese buns for around a year and a half but when demand went from 150 pieces a month to more than 2,000, she knew it was time to expand. The mum of two came to Bahrain 10 years ago and has been involved in the food and beverage industry for around 15 years. She was initially working with a Brazilian restaurant franchise before making the move into real estate, where she met her husband, who is also Brazilian. In time she became pregnant with her daughter Lilie, now five, and the couple took the decision that she would be a stay-at-home mum. But, says Francine: “I found myself with a tiny bump and a lot of time on my hands.” It was the first season of the Amwaj Marina Markets and she decided to bake some Brazilian cheese buns – an everyday food in her home country that is not found here in the Middle East – and, since then, she has never looked back. She says: “I came home with a lot but I also sold a lot. I did five or six markets and, before long, I became known as the Brazilian cheese bread lady.” She built up a following both at the markets and on Instagram but

40

Francine Pinhal

thought business would die down when Lilie started school and the family moved to Saar. However, orders in fact went from strength to strength. Francine explains: “I started off making between 100 and 150 cheese buns a month but by the time my little boy Enzo, who’s three, was starting nursery 18 month ago, I was producing 2,000, all in my home kitchen! “I had reached the point where I

was just overwhelmed. I sat down with my husband and said ‘We either have to expand properly or accept that it can’t get any bigger.’ We decided to expand. “Initially I thought I needed a Bahraini partner to set up a business. I had a partner but he had to pull out. However, at that point, there was a window in which nonBahrainis could apply for a licence and I was very lucky to fall into that category – I believe this has now changed but my application was already in process. “It’s been a long journey. Because it’s food you have to deal with virtually every ministry to make sure all the regulations are covered. But we got there in the end and I’ve now launched a factory in Salmabad.” Francine’s buns are currently sold in Words Bookstore Café but she is also talking to supermarkets and still has many individual clients. She also wants to grow further and take her Brazilian cheese breads across the Gulf via her new

company, Chipa. She says: “I do other things but the cheese buns are the main thing. They’re not new; if you speak to any Brazilian, they know them. In Brazil, if you have a coffee, you have a cheese bun; if a guest arrives at your home, you take a packet out of the freezer and put them in the oven. “But I have developed my own recipe and I love it that friends who travel to Brazil tell me mine are better than those of some of the biggest companies selling them there. “I think you can taste that what I do in the kitchen comes from the heart. I can’t describe how I feel when I am cooking but that energy comes out in my food. I was very privileged to realise my passion quite early; my happy place is in the kitchen. It’s a big family thing; I have Italian on both sides and the kitchen is where we all get together. “I believe I was put in the world to bring happiness through food, and that’s what I do.” g www.womanthismonth.com

BEAUTY TRENDS FOR 2017

If unicorn make-up is anything to go by, this year’s beauty rage has gone bananas, bringing you everything from weird to wonderful.

T

he beauty world is getting vibrant and wacky this season; some will have you scratching your head while others will test your creativity. Joz Salon & Spa gives a sneak peek into what’s hot this year and how to wear it. FIERY OMBRÉ LIPS The red lip – yes, it's a classic, but this year it’s all about stepping things up. And make-up artists have found the perfect inspiration: ombré, and a wearable ombré lip at that, not the extreme made-for-Instagram-only variety. How to do it? Start with a bold red shade along the perimeter of the lips to define the shape, then fill in the centre with a brighter orangey tone and, for added punch, finish with a glossy, vibrant orange highlight. ARTS AND CRAFTS NAILS When you see these blinged-out nails, you’ll definitely want to give them a shot. To do it yourself: Apply your polish, then place your choice of stone using a nail glue for bigger gems or a drop of topcoat for smaller ones; let dry. Then, apply more topcoat. MATTE EYES Sure, you can do the full-face matte makeup that’s all over social media. But let’s be real, matte everything can be a little harsh in the daylight. Use a milder approach and focus on a single feature at a time, like the ‘90s all-matte-lids. MATTE LIPS Liquid matte lipsticks need no introduction, but the new powder lip colour certainly does. Apply a small amount of Cosmetics Melting Lip Powder on top of your lip balm. It transforms into a creamy texture and gives a lightly stained effect. BANGS Maybe you've yet to venture into bangs territory, at least in your adult life. But with many celebs taking that step and making the chop look so good; Joz Salon suggests you call your stylist immediately. Apart from the fringe, embellished braids and dramatic hair transformations are also big this year.

Call 17 369-133, 16 031-120 or 17 756-449.

THE BELTED PONY At the backstage of runways, it looked at first as if hairstylists were doing just another low-slung ponytail. Then it was noticed that they were fastening a long fabric over the base (over an elastic); it fell to the same length as the pony’s end. And finally came the buckle. The fashion world loves anything belted – swimsuits, jumpsuits – now, apparently, hair too.

MERMAID EYES How to pull it off: Apply shimmery purple on the inner halves of the lids, blue on the outer, green just below the eyes and gold at the inner corners (eye primer helps). Blend with a fluffy shadow brush; liner and mascara are optional. www.womanthismonth.com

Counting Sheep A restful night’s sleep is elusive to some, taking a toll on energy, mood and normal functioning the morning after. Behnaz Sanjana pulls back the bedcovers on insomnia and how to deal with it.

Y

ou finally call it a day, put the lights out and settle into bed. But your mind is abuzz with a mental to-do list and that impending 8am meeting looms large in the subconscious. You count the hours till the alarm will shriek – trying to silence the mind – but all you do is toss and turn. Midnight comes and goes. You pass time on your social media pages. It’s 2am. You head to the kitchen for cookies, returning to bed and wishing for some sweet sleep, and count the hours to 6am again. Now the clock reads 4.30am. And then your foggy brain can’t remember when you fall into fitful slumber. Most of us have experienced this scenario more than a few times and know how frustrating it can be. But when this happens night after night, for weeks together, it’s called insomnia and it can feel deadly. Dr Bassam Doujaiji, American Board consultant in pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine at Bahrain Specialist Hospital tells us more. What Is It? “Insomnia is a common disorder that can make it hard to get to and stay asleep, or

cause you to wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep. There are two types of insomnia: primary and secondary. The former is when the sufferer has sleep problems that are not directly associated with any other health issue. The latter is secondary to another medical condition,” says Dr Bassam.

Insomnia is different from sleep apnoea which occurs when a sleeping person’s breathing is interrupted multiple times through the night, causing disturbed sleep. The repercussions however, are similar. Similarly, insomnia can also be categorised into acute and chronic. Acute is short-term and normally resolves itself and, according to Dr Bassam, is often due to life stressors such as loss or change of a job, death of a loved one, relocation, illness, jetlag and environmental factors such as noise, light or extreme temperatures that interfere with sleep. “Chronic insomnia occurs when the person has sleep problems because of issues like anxiety, depression, arthritis, cancer, heartburn, pain, asthma or taking certain medications,” he continues. It persists for a minimum of three nights a week over an extended period of more

Diagnosis and Treatment Dr Bassam goes on to say that it’s important to understand what’s causing your sleep deprivation. Because sleep disorders can have complex causes and serious health consequences if left unmanaged, it’s very important to speak with a sleep medicine consultant to gain a thorough diagnosis and to discuss your best treatment options. “The most reliable diagnosis for any sleep disorder is a sleep study also known as polysomnography [PSG]. Sleep is monitored closely to diagnose problems. The findings of the overnight study, along with a detailed medical history can be used to determine the type of disorder [insomnia, sleep apnoea or another] you suffer and the severity,” says Dr Bassam. He maintains that treatment for chronic insomnia includes, first, treating any underlying conditions or health problems that are causing the condition. “If insomnia continues, your health care provider may suggest behavioural therapy. This approach helps you to change behaviours that may worsen insomnia and to learn new ones to promote sleep. Behaviour therapy is commonly used to treat psycho-physiological insomnia. Although these techniques require some effort and take time to work, they do provide a means of coping with insomnia that help people return to more normal sleep patterns. You don’t have to put up with sleepless nights. Simple changes in your daily habits can often help,” he concludes.

than three months. Besides being triggered by unhealthy habits or thought patterns, it can also be hereditary and takes time and perseverance to overcome. Insomnia is not just about struggling to sleep at night. It’s also struggling to get your act together in the morning. “Insomnia can disturb not only your energy level and mood but also your health, work performance and quality of life. Some

White noise or sleep music are known to help some of the wide-eyed to doze off. Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), a nascent concept, refers to audio or visuals that can make one feel calm and blissful. It is described as a euphoric tingling and relaxation felt while seeing or hearing mundane things like flipping pages of a book, brushing one’s hair or comforting whispers, thereby helping to overcome insomnia. www.womanthismonth.com

of these concerns include not feeling well-rested after a night's sleep, daytime fatigue or sleepiness, lack of motivation, poor performance at school or work, irritability, depression or anxiety and increased errors or accidents,” explains the doctor. “If you continue to operate without enough sleep, you may see more longterm and serious health problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure or stroke.”

According to the University of Maryland Medical Centre’s website, the essential oil drawn from fresh lavender flowers is medicinal. Scientific evidence shows that aromatherapy with lavender may slow the activity of the nervous system, improve sleep quality, promote relaxation and lift mood in people suffering from sleep disorders. We asked the WTM social media family for insomnia cures. There were lots of answers but we particularly liked this one from Bhavna Malkani: “I ask my mum to pat my head.”

What You Say Diana, Saar Circumstances led me to stay up late into the nights watching television. Eventually my body clock adapted to my new sleep patterns and now I find it impossible to sleep and wake up at normal hours, which can be problematic at times. I hope to get used to a healthy sleep pattern soon. Perin, Sehla My father had insomnia too. But changing my lifestyle completely worked wonders. Sticking to a regular pattern of sleeping early and waking up early really helped. And no afternoon naps. When reading or a cup of cocoa doesn’t help me sleep, I practise focused breathing while lying down; it will put anyone to sleep! I also use guided meditation to relax and keep my ever-friendly crystals close by to lull me to sleep. April 2017

showcase BAHRAIN SPECIALIST HOSPITAL

MUMMY MAKEOVER Consultant plastic surgeon, Dr Salil Bharadwaj, gives us the lowdown on how cosmetic surgery can help restore the body post pregnancy.

W

hile having children can be the ultimate gift, it can also result in physical changes that no amount of diet or exercise can help. In addition to causing extra deposits of fat to form in the abdominal area, pregnancy stretches the skin and the underlying stomach muscles, leaving the area with stretch marks and loose, overhanging skin. The breasts can also be affected due to hormonal changes and breastfeeding, ultimately leading to loss in volume and sagging. A Mummy Makeover is any combination of cosmetic procedures that restore your beforepregnancy appearance, typically focusing on the breasts and abdomen. A makeover might include a tummy tuck, a breast procedure such as an augmentation, lift or reduction, and liposuction of the legs, arms or trunk. These procedures are usually performed together as an all-inclusive package. Patients may also benefit from fat injection to the buttocks and vaginal tightening. Any healthy woman who has experienced an unfavourable change in the shape and/or size of her breasts and abdomen after losing weight or having a baby is a candidate for a Mummy Makeover. An ideal candidate’s family is complete and she is at least six months removed from the last pregnancy. If any of the following concerns affect you and you wish to do something about it, you may be an ideal candidate for a Mummy Makeover. • Sagging breasts that no longer appear youthful;

48

April 2017

Dr Salil Bharadwaj

• Loose skin and stretch marks around and below the midsection; • Protruding abdomen as a result of stretched muscles during pregnancy; • Persistent pockets of excess fat anywhere on the body. For suitable surgical candidates, Mummy Makeover procedures can: • Help you get a firmer, well contoured and smoother looking stomach; • Reposition, contour and uplift your breasts helping relocate them to where they were before you had children; • Enable you to feel more comfortable

wearing fitted, tailored clothing again as well as feeling better in bikinis, swimwear, sleeveless clothing and lingerie; • Remove the bulging appearance that’s commonly called ‘a muffin top’; • Return your body confidence and sense of femininity; • Restore the contours that help you feel more desirable and body-confident. Whilst tummy, breast and body contouring procedures can help remedy parts of your body that cannot be fixed by exercise or good nutrition alone, it is important to exercise and maintain a healthy weight for best results. And it’s important to have realistic expectations of what surgery can, and cannot, do for your body. Call 17 812-222 or email salil.bharadwaj@bsh.com.bh www.womanthismonth.com

A good friend and colleague recently suffered what has been explained as a minor stroke. She received almost immediate medical treatment and seems to be recovering well but says she finds trouble sleeping and becomes easily irritable. She will be returning to work soon and I’m wondering about what needs to be taken into account and how we can help her?

A

Sometimes called a mini stroke, a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) has analogous symptoms to a stroke but the person appears to recuperate swiftly. The medical definition for TIA is: • Transient: Symptoms disappear in less than 24 hours; • Ischaemic: Failure of blood flow to part of the brain or eye; • Attack: Sudden onset of symptoms which vary from person to person depending on which part of the brain or eye is starved of blood. TIA symptoms are determined by which blood vessel to the brain is blocked and accordingly which part of the brain is starved of blood. Common symptoms include brief attacks of weakness, clumsiness, numbness or pins and needles of the face, arm or leg on one side of the body, slurring of speech or difficulty in finding words or blurred vision in one or both eyes. www.womanthismonth.com

TIAs do not usually cause ‘blackout’ fainting or loss of consciousness. An individual who has had a TIA has an increased possibility of having a stroke. The risk of having a stroke in the first year after a TIA is about 10 per cent but then falls by about five per cent each year. The treatment depends on the results of a vigilant assessment by the physician. Any person who smokes should stop completely. People with high blood pressure, high cholesterol or high sugar levels in the blood can typically be helped by a healthier diet, though drugs are sometimes needed. So your role is to encourage her to modify her lifestyle. A physician may also prescribe aspirin to thin the blood; this reduces the risk of having a stroke after a TIA. Sometimes TIAs are due to narrowing of a blood vessel in the neck; this can be treated surgically by a carotid endarectomy. Therefore, if anyone has an attack with symptoms similar to those described, it is essential that they should see a physician at once, so that, if needed, the earliest possible treatment can be initiated.

Q

I have recently lost a fair amount of weight. As I got heavier, over a number of years, I noticed that my shoe size increased. Is it reasonable to now expect my feet to go back to their

previous size or will they always be somewhat splayed? When we lose weight, we tend to focus on a flatter stomach, smaller hips and model cheekbones. Our feet may be the last thing on our mind when we are on a journey to weight loss, but they walk us through that path. We tend to forget shoes changed Cinderella’s life. Your feet can be affected when you gain excessive weight. First, they will begin to grow, both as a result of the extra weight on your body and a restructuring of the bone structure inside them. In response to the extra weight, the bones inside your feet will begin to compress on top, and your foot will become flatter. This can assist you to retain your balance as you get heavier, but it can be complemented by its share of pain and joint problems. Although your feet may feel a little less cramped in your shoes, it is vital to note that not everyone experiences shrinking feet during weight loss. For most people, weight loss in the feet typically happens after losing more than 10 kilograms. For some people, it may take losing more than 25 kilograms to see a difference.

Newly appointed as executive chef at Juffair favourite, the K Hotel, chef Nitai Chand has been cooking professionally for almost 20 years. His early culinary inspiration came from cooking with his mother and he got his start at the Green Park Hotel Visakhapatnam, India, initially specialising in Chinese cuisine. He says: “At the beginning of my career, I probably had the worst experiences. I was even reduced to tears on a number of occasions. Even though I was always considered one of the best chefs in the kitchen, my superior would constantly push me to become better. And today, I thank them immensely for it. These experiences only made me stronger, and moulded me into the chef I am today.” Chef Nitai favours fusion style that merges traditional and contemporary. He says: “I started out cooking traditional authentic cuisine, but eventually incorporated elements from modern cooking into my dishes. The fine-dining industry has changed drastically during those years, and I believe that it’s important for a chef to keep up with the latest trends. In order to be successful a chef must be able to constantly modify his or her style of cooking to match customers’ changing preferences. But, no matter what type of cuisine I serve, at the end of the day my sole purpose is still to make sure that every customer is served a well-presented and tasty meal. “Every chef’s secret is a good team which needs to be able to work together under pressure, while not neglecting the guidelines and procedures we have to set in place. To lead a successful team, you need to constantly strive to bring out the very best in them. Team members need to put their heart and soul into their work.” Chef Nitai shares the recipe for one of his favourite dishes. www.womanthismonth.com

CULINARY JEWEL OF THE ORIENT This fine-dining restaurant offers top-notch Oriental delicacies guaranteed to keep you coming back for more.

T

he award-winning Soie restaurant, located at the five-star Sheraton Bahrain Hotel, is renowned for dishing up some of the most authentic and tastiest Chinese fare on the island. The dĂŠcor is equally impressive and features magnificent mirrors and soft lighting complemented with carmine-coloured drapes sweeping from the ceiling. The dark wood fixtures harmonise the neutral-coloured seating, creating a Zen-like ambience. The varied menu lists Cantonese, Szechuan, Beijing and Hong Kong specialties. To help diners select the perfect meal, there is a chart at the bottom that mentions if the dish is spicy, contains nuts or is suitable for vegetarians. Diners with food allergies can ask to have their selection made to suit their needs. The restaurant manager, a jolly man by the name of Mico, enlightened us on the best sellers and we placed our order soon after. He also mentioned the restaurant has

monthly promotions that are well worth enquiring about. Looking around, I saw the diverse clientele this restaurant attracts. There was a couple tucked away in one corner enjoying a romantic date, a large family celebrating and, at the other end, some businessmen enjoying a working meal. This truly is a venue for every occasion. The appetisers arrived in a matter of minutes – siomai with chicken and fried wontons. With a dash of soy sauce, the siomai dumplings were delectable. The light and crispy wontons were an ideal starter to whet our appetites for the rest of the courses. I made a mental note of the impeccable service as the main course was laid out on the table. The kitchen must have the fastest chefs in the world! Mico suggested trying a number of main courses, so we had a feast in front of us. We devoured vegetable fried rice, sizzling beef with vegetables, Kung Pao chicken, chicken

with cashew nuts and steamed sea bass with black bean sauce. The meat for the sizzler was tender and soft, and both the chicken dishes were wonderfully savoury. My favourite was the sea bass because of its robust flavour and flaky texture. The vegetables used in all the preparations were variously baby corn, mushrooms, beans, carrots, broccoli and other more exotic choices. For dessert, we went with lychee salad with mango sherbet and toffee bananas with ice cream. The sweet flesh of the lychee stood in sharp contrast to the tangy sherbet, a match made in heaven. The hard toffee shell encased steaming hot banana pieces that tasted divine, especially when paired with the homemade vanilla ice cream. As always, Soie lived up to its reputation and left us itching to go back again. Call 17 533-533.

C

elebrating two decades of growth, industry leadership and innovation, Qatar Airways, the national carrier of the State of Qatar, has unveiled QSuite, its exclusive new Business Class offering that enables premium passengers to create their own customisable private suites 35,000 feet in the air. The unique and patented seat design has been two years in the making and was launched in March by Qatar Airways at ITB Berlin, the world’s largest travel trade show. QSuite features the industry’s first-ever double bed available in business class, with privacy panels that stow away, allowing passengers in adjoining seats to create their own private bedroom. This first-of-its-kind feature affords passengers more privacy, choice and personalisation, enabling them to enjoy a First Class experience in Business Class. Families, colleagues or friends can work, dine and socialise in their own private setting as it suits their needs, thanks to the adjustable panels and moveable TV monitors on the centre four seats. Additionally, passengers have the choice of making their own cabin-within-a-cabin; creating double QSuites or quadrants. Each seat is crafted with luxurious details such as hand-stitched Italian leather and satin rose-gold finishing, in line with the world-class airline’s luxurious brand and standards of service. On Qatar Airways, the customer can choose to dine, rest and be entertained with Oryx One, its award-winning inflight entertainment platform, as and when they please. The menu options are varied, with something for everyone. In addition to the existing decadent ‘dine on demand’ service, the new

Business Class menu will offer a selection of snack-sharing dishes available throughout the flight. A wake-up Express Breakfast will also be available for those who choose to sleep a little longer by making the most of the ‘Do Not Disturb’ option available on the door of their private QSuite. showcase EURO MOTORS

REVAMPED FOR SUCCESS! This new flagship model made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show to much acclaim.

T

he BMW M760Li xDrive 7 Series may be a bit of a mouthful to say but that certainly doesn’t detract from its capability, power or refinement. What’s more, it boasts a plethora of driving assistance systems and better aerodynamics. The M badge gives the 7 Series a new look, but, thankfully, without harming its luxury credentials or changing too much of what fans know and love. The new model debuts the new M Performance TwinPower Turbo 12-cylinder petrol engine. It develops an output of 610bhp at 5,500rpm and peak torque of 800Nm. The sleek 7 Series makes the dash from 0 to 100kmph in just 3.7 seconds on the way to an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph. Power transfer is via the state-of-the-art eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission as standard. The M Performance-specific tuning of the shift programmes, delivering sportier gear changes and more instantaneous downshifts throughout the rev range, has been specially adapted to the characteristics of the engine. Further, the Executive Drive Pro suspension system provides unbeatable ride comfort, the company says. Active roll stabilisation minimises body movements and the system teams up with performance tyres, fitted to exclusive 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in matt Cerium Grey metallic, to give the new BMW M760Li xDrive the best driving dynamics in its class. The new model is fitted with the same www.womanthismonth.com

extensive package of innovative driver assistance systems as all variants of the 7 Series range. The Driving Assistant Plus system includes the steering and lane control assistant, lane keeping assistant with active side collision protection, rear collision prevention and crossing traffic warning functions. The traffic jam assistant – which involves semi-automated driving – can be used on any type of road, and the active cruise control with stop and go function now only requires drivers to press a button to incorporate speed restrictions detected by the speed limit info function. The new generation of the surround view system now includes a 3D View and panorama view option in the control display, which makes parking this model easier than ever. As in all variants of the BMW 7 Series, the monitor of the iDrive operating system in the new model comes in touch display form, which means drivers will be able to navigate around

the system in the same way as with modern electronic devices. In addition to using the controller to operate the system in the familiar style, its functions can also be selected and activated by touching the screen’s surface. The gesture control system revolves around hand movements – that are detected by a 3D sensor – and it can be used to control infotainment functions in an extremely intuitive and user-friendly fashion. The gestures can be used for a number of functions, including controlling the volume in audio applications and accepting or rejecting incoming telephone calls. There is also the option of pairing a specific gesture with an individual choice of function. Also joining the fray is a new smartphone holder integrated into the centre console, which enables wireless, inductive charging for mobile phones for the first time in a car. ave you ever heard the phrase SOS? Of course! Who hasn’t heard of the international code for distress? Well, today I want to talk about another kind of ‘SOS’, one that is still a cry for help, but doesn’t involve you being stuck alone on a desert island. It is Survival Overdrive Syndrome (SOS). If you are a mother, living in the 21st century, then chances are you are suffering from SOS. First of all, let me walk you through this new, yet very real, concept. Survival Overdrive Syndrome is something that can manifest in your body and can have real symptoms. Let’s face it, this isn’t the first ‘disorder’ or ‘syndrome’ someone has come up with in recent years; with the way we live our lives nowadays, the human body can only take so much without malfunction. The body resembles a machine; if you overload it with work, it will start crashing slowly. Dr Aviva Romm is behind the idea of SOS. She is a physician who has been referred to as “The Face of Natural Medicine in the 21st Century” by Prevention magazine. Through her work, Dr Aviva came across many patients, all complaining of the same symptoms: chronic feelings of being overwhelmed and chronic fatigue – physically, emotionally and even spiritually. This led her to dig deeper and finally come up with Survival Overdrive Syndrome. I will give you a much simpler example to better understand SOS. I am a 30-year-old wife and mother. I wake up every day at 5am, and I go to bed every night at around 10 to 10.30pm, and every minute in between is a serious marathon! After I tuck my son in bed – which means my job is done – I can finally relax and collapse on the sofa; mostly though, I surprise myself and keep going at the same speed I have been during the day. I’m still trying to save every second I can and, even though I’m officially done, my brain sometimes doesn’t realise that – which makes it very difficult to wind down and just be still. Aren’t we all trying to be a model of efficiency? Whatever the task is, we are

April 2017

Taking few minutes to ourselves during the day to breathe deeply, to sit still and just be, to list our priorities and not overload our schedules; are all ways to reduce the stress on our bodies. always on the lookout for ways to get it done in less time, like trying to grab all 20 bags of groceries from the car in one go rather than making a second trip or looking for a dish or a pot to wash while those onions are sautéing for 90 seconds. I think we can all agree that time is precious; they aren’t manufacturing more of it! We all are in this race against the

only 24 hours that exist in a day, wishing there were more hours, so we could fill them too with tasks and to-do lists. So many of us push beyond what our physiology and psychology systems are able to handle healthily, all in the name of a success that ends up leaving us gutted and exhausted. Here I would like to pause and ask a question: Is it worth it? Being able to cross things from your to-do list is awesome, but is it worth the amount of stress that’s wrecking our bodies? I think we all know the answer to that. Taking a few minutes to ourselves during the day to breathe deeply, to sit still and just be, to list our priorities and not overload our schedules are all ways to reduce the stress on our bodies. Taking some ‘me time’ is very important – whether to go for a mani-pedi, read a page or two from that book that has been sitting on your bedside table for the last month or go for coffee with a friend and just chill. It’s your responsibility to cherish and appreciate your body if you want to live a longer and healthier life. Ouiam blogs as Chanelmama. www.womanthismonth.com

Star

Gazing Raphael tells us what’s written in the stars this month

horoscopes

Scorpio

You will receive news concerning your role within the workplace, and promotion together with a pay rise. Prepare for some flack from a jealous colleague who feels they were more deserving of the success. On the relationship front, a partner may surprise you with news of a move. You’ll be encouraged by the plans they want you to be part of. For the first time in your life you could be feeling part of something very special indeed.

Aries

Sagittarius

Taurus

Capricorn

You do tend to like secrets and this month you will stumble upon a whopper, which, if revealed, could move things in your favour at work but at the risk of damaging your integrity. It’s a tough decision and you won’t have much time to ponder. Trust your instincts as your barometer and things will work out, serving your best interests in the end. Just remember to guard well what you discover and only reveal what you need to. Take the best experience you can imagine, double it, and maybe you will arrive at the kind of feelings many of you are set to experience this April as a new man suddenly appears in your life. You’ll feel like a new woman and your indifference will disperse. The only problem is that soon you will have to confront a departure from your old life – and the possibility of some difficult goodbyes – as this new arrival means you could be heading in a completely new direction.

Gemini

Remember that disagreement in January over a car? You thought it had all been settled and you’d seen the back of one particularly difficult individual. Well, it looks like a loose end is about to rear its ugly head in the form of an unexpected bill. Before you charge off in a fit of rage to confront those concerned, take a moment to check the small print and go through your own paperwork. Investigation will show they don’t have a leg to stand on.

Cancer

It looks as if those of you who took a chance last month in chasing a dream or long-standing ambition will actually have made some progress! However, there is still plenty of hard work ahead; just make sure you don’t over do it! In family matters, your concerns may be directed towards a relative whose financial weaknesses are dragging them deeper into debt. Your sensible fiscal advice will be needed but don’t expect things to go smoothly. www.womanthismonth.com

To describe the last few weeks as unpredictable would be an understatement. Never upset or ruffled easily, the strains and stresses may have overcome your usual lighthearted nature and tested your patience. What you need more than anything now is a holiday. Your batteries are in need of a recharge and, with further challenging situations envisaged throughout 2017, you will need to be at your best to deal with times both good and bad.

You’ve been erratic over the last few weeks, which has as much to do with an inner conflict as influences beyond your control have been shaping your life. Change is coming and an air of stability, which will allow you to think more clearly and shake free of the uncertainty clouding your thoughts. You are a restless animal, so, if anything hinders your confidence, you don’t wait around. This time, sticking it out could bring you much bigger rewards.

As the song goes: “You can’t always get what you want.” And no matter how much it may annoy or frustrate you that fact is something you need to come to terms with. With the fingers of desire beginning to weaken on a current love affair, you need to question whether the person you have been drawn towards actually wants you as much as you want him. You have been kidding yourself for long enough and if you’re not happy with the rules of the game then now’s the time to leave the playing field.

Virgo

Aquarius

Libra

Pisces

Leo

Things have been improving on the relationship front since you suffered a slight dip a few months back, and it seems problems have been completely ironed out. You can feel confident your partner is as committed to the union as you are. However, things are not so rosy at work and a demanding boss looks set to stretch your patience. Rather than blow your top, sit the boss down and talk through your concerns. You have been struggling with unsavoury elements in the workplace recently; people who seem intent on making your life difficult. You must decide whether to stay and fight your corner or look for another job and a more balanced life. Whatever you do is bound to have a significant effect on those closest to you so be sure to consult loved ones before making any major changes.

If only you could listen to your heart a little more rather than always following the logical route then you might be surprised by what you discover for it seems that someone close by has amorous intentions towards you and yet their efforts thus far have passed by unnoticed. You are a lot lonelier than you care to admit and perhaps this kind of attention is just what you need to provide a more complete sense of being to your personality. You are sometimes accused of not seeing things you start through to the end. However, in the coming weeks you will prove to many of the doubters around you that – when the occasion calls for it – you can take a task past the finish line if it inspires you enough. On the relationship front you could hear from an ex-partner from long ago, whose surprise appearance may cause unexpected stirrings! April 2017
