EDITOR’S NOTE

s we send this month’s magazine to press, we’re all enjoying the long Eid weekend and looking forward to our summer break. To get you in the mood we’ve got pages of fabulous summer fashion, including celebrity styles to steal, and a special beauty feature in which we meet the region’s favourite bloggers, scout out the latest beauty treatments (one of which is actually pretty scary) and come up with a bunch of products to help you save the environment at the same time as saving your skin. Our interviewees this month are a trio of truly inspiring women. Actress Jacqueline Fernandez tells us why she’s involved with Project Everyone which is remaking the Spice Girls’ Wannabe video to tell world leaders what women really, really want in order to achieve the UN’s Global Goals. We catch up with Laura Jefferson, the woman behind the Female Expats in Bahrain Facebook page, which gained hundreds of members in its first month. And game designer Noof Abdulla talks about representing Bahrain at the world finals of the Microsoft Imagine Cup. In the wellbeing section, endodontist Dr Komal Sharma looks as some common oral problems and how to deal with them and we have tips on how to shift the holiday kilos. As the temperatures reach boiling point, our thoughts turn to escaping the desert heat and, in this month’s travel section, Puja Tiwari takes us to the frozen North to see the sights in Norway, Sweden and Alaska, brrr! And our revamped Parenting section is all about heading Back to School with top tips to make the first day go smoothly, expert advice from both counsellor Lamar Kanafani and Dr Jinan Harith Darwish and a whole host of homework helpers to give your youngsters a welcome boost. From homes to food to things to do, see, try and buy, this month’s issue is packed with loads of info and tips. Hope you enjoy it!

Go Girl Huge congratulations to Farheen Ahmed on getting her book Beyond The Ordinary published. It must have been hard to carry out all the necessary research and travel to India while also holding down a demanding position with Woman This Month. Miss Ahmed is a great example of what can be achieved when you put your mind to it and I’m glad to see the magazine celebrating her achievement. Mira

Farheen Ahmed contrary to popular belief outside India, is not just about yoga. It has schools and also runs programmes for women, particularly widows, in village areas offering training and helping them set up small businesses in things such as cooking, basket weaving and making school uniforms, thus enabling them to support themselves and their families. The organisation has also been involved in humanitarian relief in areas such as Syria, where it works, in particular, with female victims of abuse. The book was officially launched at the annual AoL celebration for Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s birthday, an event attended by around 20,000 people and seen online by more than two million. Farheen says: “My concept, as an author, is that whatever I write should have a moral for others, it should wake people up. My grandmother told me as a child that we’re all born with a lot of wisdom; as you get older it gets dusty with all the things we go through. But some people will return to the light, get beyond the rainbow. My mission is to spread this. Go beyond the ordinary. Go for the road not taken. Be the best version of yourself. “And I’m not done yet ‘The woods are lovely, dark and deep and I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep’.” www.womanthismonth.com

Great Gathering I loved seeing the pictures of your Mums’ Meet-up at the K Hotel. I wasn’t able to come to this one but it looks like all the ladies had a great time and I look forward to coming to the next event. I think this is a great initiative to get readers together and I’m pleased Woman This Month wants to hear our thoughts. When’s the next one going to be? Wanda Ed: We’re working on details for the next meet-up so check out our website and social media pages for details, there’s an announcement coming soon.

The following #WTM post was favourited and retweeted on Twitter the most.

Travel Tips The travel feature in the July issue came at just the right time for me. I would never have thought of taking a picture of the important pages of my passport but this tip really saved me a great deal of trouble. I visited Germany and managed to lose my passport, as well as various other valuables. Thanks to your advice, I already knew where to find the embassy and was able to give them all the details of my passport, including my Bahrain visa, which I’d also photographed. Well done, keep up the good work. Bina

AUGUST IN FOCUS What’s on our radar this month?

Hello to allo&lugh

Smart mums (and dads) will be checking out the newest kids’ store in Seef Mall. Bringing Spanish style to the island allo&lugh takes its name from the pet names for boy and girl and is an upscale baby and toddler brand known for its distinctive and contemporary style featuring vivid colours and cute motifs. The store carries a range for kids aged from birth to 12 years and also has items from Fourlads, Alfonso andn Zero to Seven.

Flat Pack Happiness

Be still our beating heart. Is it unreasonable that we’re so excited that work on Bahrain’s very own Ikea is under way? There’ve been rumours as far back as 2014 and, last year, a company spokesman was reported as saying it would open this year. Then nothing. But now it seems the yellow and blue sign has been spotted at a site near Riffa and work is progressing apace. Excited much!

Spanish Rhythms Playing A Round

Ever fancied giving golf a try but thought it was too expensive? Us too, but the latest offer from the Royal Golf Club could just be the answer with two-hour introductory group lessons for beginners for just BD20 each! The first hour will be spent learning the basics of golf, with a PGA instructor, followed by a one-hour introduction to the Wee Monty par 3 course. Group lessons for beginners are available on Monday evenings from 6pm and Saturdays from 4pm. The price includes tuition, equipment hire, golf balls and refreshments. To book your place, call the club on 17 750-777 extension 302.

August 2016

The annual Bahrain Summer Festival wraps up on August 4 with a voyage to the heart of Andalusia led by the Spanish singer and choreographer Luis de la Carrasca and his company Flamenco Vivo at the Cultural Hall. Brought to the audience in cooperation with the French Embassy and Alliance Francaise, the show brings a fresh take on this uniquely Spanish art form by integrating it with dramatic and classical plays. Call 17 298-777 or visit www. bahrainsummer.bh for more information.

A Little Mermaid

At last the EUFA European Football Championship is over and now we’re looking forward to the Rio Summer Olympics, especially since our office boasts several different nationalities, each of whom will be shouting on their home contestants. But one thing we’ll all be united in is supporting 16-year-old swimmer Fatema Al Mahmeed, who’ll be representing the Kingdom in the 50m freestyle. We’re a bit sad that Alzain Tareq won’t be competing. WTM has been watching her progress for some time, but at just 11 years old, she was felt too young by the International Swimming Federation. Still, there’s always 2020. www.womanthismonth.com

Here Comes the Sun

Marni’s ME603S sunnies are both retro and bang up-to-date with a frame that front that progressively tapers down from the prominent, rounded corners until it almost vanishes, creating an unfinished effect that complements the thickness of the temples. The palette of saturated colours – a typical feature of Marni glasses – is accentuated by the metal bridge and rims of either gold or silver.

STYLE ICON

Amal Alamuddin, also known as Amal Clooney, haven’t stepped back from her duties as a lawyer despite the glamorous red carpet events she’s often spotted at. Her flawless and smart style goes from court to film premieres. One of the handbags that she’s regularly seen carrying is Ballin’s tote bag. So the Italian brand decided to pay tribute to her charm, renaming the trapezoid-shaped bag with a metal lock, the Amal. The bag is available in a wide range of colours.

AMERICAN CLASSICS Disney and Coach have joined forces to create a limited-edition collection featuring Mickey Mouse designs on leather goods and ready-to-wear fashions. The collection is part of a series of exclusive limitededition projects that commemorate Coach’s 75th anniversary. The famous mouse pops up on specially created sketches by Disney animators with the exclusive artwork stamped on T-shirts, bags, trainers and biker jackets. “Mickey Mouse is one of my earliest memories of American pop – his nostalgic charm, cheekiness, individuality and inherent cool make for the ultimate American icon,” says Coach creative director Stuart Vevers.

The Italian brand Gucci shot its autumn and winter 16/17 campaign around the eccentric subcultures of Tokyo. Japan’s capital offered a kinetic meeting of the traditional with hyper-modern to Glen Luchford’s lens. The chaotic lights and sounds of the city are mixed with tea houses and pachinko parlours, a mix of calm and chaos. This vibrant place creates a psychedelic assault that echoes the vivacity of the brand’s creative director Alessandro Michele’s creations.

LIFESTYLE PARTNERSHIP

22

August 2016

Michael Kors has announced an association with McLaren-Honda, the world championship Formula 1 team. Both brands believe in design and speed and the partnership will strengthen and amplify the brands’ embodiment of a fast, jet-set lifestyle. To celebrate the launch of the cooperation, Michael Kors has created a limited-edition men’s black leather jacket. The 50 specially produced items feature both logos as well as a limited-edition plaque with each piece’s unique production number. “This partnership is about the convergence of style and speed, which is inherent to both the Michael Kors and McLaren-Honda DNA. There is an energy, sophistication and confidence to our brands, and we wanted to create a limited-edition piece that spoke to that,” says Michael Kors.

The leather fabric brings a rebel element to the piece while the floral top complements the look for a more romantic and girly approach. PAVING THE WAY The bank that started out with a goal-oriented vision has played a primary role in facilitating Bahrain’s economic enrichment.

H

aving commenced its operations in 1992, the Bahrain Development Bank (BDB) was created for the purpose of helping the establishment of small and medium-sized enterprises in the Kingdom. Aside from adopting effective integrated programmes to fulfill this aim, the bank also focuses on the expansion and development of existing enterprises. The plan adopted by BDB has enabled it to play a major developmental role through the diversification of its investment activities, turning some much-needed attention to new sectors with added value such as the refining industry, food industry, tourism and health projects. At the core of this plan was also the aim to support troubled projects and put them back on the path to profitability. Since small and medium enterprises form an integral part of the business activity and impact entrepreneurial development in the

Kingdom, these mechanisms were designed and implemented in accordance with the BDB’s expertise in this area and were in line with the existing economic, financial and technological conditions at local and global levels. The insight of the bank’s top management resulted in the launch of a number of programmes such as Rowad, which aims

to develop Bahraini youth and strengthen their capacity to take up entrepreneurship along with establishing small enterprises. This brainchild of BDB is a comprehensive programme designed to support entrepreneurs in developing their ideas and starting their own businesses. Supporting entrepreneurship will remain a key element in the bank’s development plans, as it will continue to provide a variety of programmes and activities that contribute in attracting existing entrepreneurs as well as encouraging students of secondary schools and universities to consider entrepreneurship as a viable option. Some of the valuable financial services provided by BDB include BDB finance, Islamic financing, education finance, BDB & Tamkeen finance, Letters of Credit and Letters of Guarantee, as well as loans for agriculture and fisheries. GIRL POWER GOES GLOBAL

Two decades on, a remake of the Spice Girls’ Wannabe video, featuring artists from India, Nigeria, South Africa, UK, USA and Canada, is being produced to tell world leaders what girls and women really really want in 2016 to achieve the UN’s Global Goals.

Photos by @veroniquedeviguerie @gettyimages

P

roject Everyone, in partnership with Getty Images and SAWA, the global cinema advertising association, will see the release of “#WhatIReallyReallyWant” as part of the Global Goals campaign for girls and women. MJ Delaney, of Moxie Pictures, directs a remake of the Spice Girls’ Wannabe which features Gigi Lamayne and Moneoa from South Africa, Seyi Shay from Nigeria, M.O from the UK, Taylor Hatala from Canada, Larsen Thompson from the USA and, of course, Bahrain’s own Bollywood babe Jacqueline Fernandez who hails from Sri Lanka but represents India and was born and brought up in the Kingdom. In September 2016, world leaders will mark the first anniversary of the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals. These global goals are a mighty plan to end poverty, fix climate change and address inequalities over the next 15 years, but they will only succeed if they address the needs of the most marginalised first, particularly those of girls and women. Issues such as quality education, an end to violence, an end to child marriage and equal pay for equal work need to be top of every government’s agenda in order to give the Goals the best possible start. Project Everyone marks 20 years of Girl Power with an updated version of Wannabe and the tagline “#WhatIReallyReallyWant”. The film reflects the voices of girls and women all over the world and aims to get them speaking out. The film #WhatIReallyReallyWant is online on Global Goals’ official YouTube channel:https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=sZQ2RUFd54o&feature= youtu.be. Bollywood Joins the Campaign Jacqueline Fernandez tells Woman This Month why this is an initiative close to her own heart.

Why did you decide to get involved with the Global Goals Campaign – is there any part of it that’s particularly close to your heart? The world needs a dose of girl power and that’s why I’m supporting the Global Goals campaign for girls and women. I am delighted to be lending my support to the film, Global Goals and Project Everyone. I am a huge advocate for empowering girls and women, and I want to support my peers and others around the world to help create an international community where women feel secure, strong and supported. Our potential is limitless, and participating in this film is just one of the ways I am committed to help promote the Global Goals campaign. In a world where 70 per cent of the poor are women, improving access to healthcare and quality schooling are just a couple of the essential steps forward that will change everything for all communities around the globe. These goals can only be met if we do everything in our power to help marginalised communities of girls and women. If the last 15 years was about putting girls and women on the agenda, the next 15 years is about putting them at the heart of the agenda, which they themselves can deliver. This is embodied in the Global Goals where gender perspectives and special indicators for women are integrated across many goals. But as Richard Curtis [film director and supporter] has said before, you cannot fight for your rights until you know what they are! What I really, really want is for people to recognise the potential of girls when they are allowed to study instead of doing household chores. And what I really, really want is to end violence against women. I want women to feel powerful and beautiful. Nothing can stop us once we are given equal opportunities and are allowed to flourish. Investing in equality and the financial independence of women, who represent more than half of the global population in disempowered communities, is one of the safest bets when it comes to international economic and social development. How can readers get involved and help to make a difference? This calls on people to share a picture of #WhatIReallyReallyWant for girls and women. The visual responses from around the world will be presented to world leaders at the UN www.womanthismonth.com

I want women to feel powerful and beautiful. Nothing can stop us once we are given equal opportunities and are allowed to flourish General Assembly in September to encourage new political and financial commitments from governments, in support of the Sustainable Development Goals. I would request the readers to use the #WhatIReallyReallyWant hashtag, share a photo of yourself holding up what YOU really, really want for girls and women. Aside from the campaign, what are you working on at the moment? I am again working alongside the UN for the #WildForLife campaign which aims to spur action to protect endangered species and end illegal trade in wild life. Few who see a tiger, elephant or rhino in the wild forget the experience. People can be equally inspired by seeing them on television or in films, and these moments make us want to explore nature’s wonders and can turn us into conservationists, scientists and people who care about the natural world around us. Kids’ rooms all across the globe are filled with

stuffed likenesses of these iconic species. Wouldn’t it be tragic to know they disappeared in our lifetime? The illegal trade in wildlife is threatening these majestic beasts, and we have to join forces to stop it. Do you ever get back to Bahrain to visit and do you still have connections here? Having spent a major part of my childhood and teenage years there, I do visit my school friends and family. I love to spend some quality family time in Bahrain. Do you have a message for girls in Bahrain who might be experiencing any of the issues raised in the film? Gender discrimination needs to stop, and it needs to stop now. Speak up and do not give into it. This film is just one step in that fight. Many of the issues we’re spotlighting do not reside in one country alone and neither are these issues just for the developing world – it cuts across the world. August 2016

WTM chats to Laura Jefferson, the woman behind new social media page Female Expats in Bahrain which has taken our local Facebook community by storm, gaining almost 400 members in its first month with women talking about everything from hats to marital issues and more. Laura Jefferson

L

aura has not even arrived on the island yet but already a lot of people know her name and are eager to meet her. A single 27-year-old, she’ll be heading to the island in the coming weeks and set up the page as a way to get advice and information about her new home. She says: “I haven't done anything like this before. It’s ironic because I'm not personally big on Facebook. Before I arrived I wanted to connect with some locals to get an inside view of life in Bahrain. I have seen similar Facebook groups in other countries and tried searching for one in Bahrain. I thought surely there would already be one created due to the large expat community, but, to my surprise, I didn't find any online space where ladies in Bahrain can come together.” And her idea certainly seems to have struck a chord with the women of the expat community who signed up in their droves with friends recommending friends, each giving a short introduction of themselves, and a group meet-up organised within days. Laura adds: “I was completely blown away by the response! I kept double-checking the members because I couldn't believe there were more than 300 ladies within a week. Besides the quick growth, I love the diversity the group has attracted. There are ladies from all over the world, from

There is already a strong sense of trust and accountability in the group. We discuss everything from finding schools and apartments, to where to find Spanx!” Having studied public relations and fashion, Laura is looking forward to a new challenge working in child care in Bahrain and she’s eager to see what the island has to offer saying: “I enjoy trying new restaurants and cooking, exploring the art scene of a new city and volunteering.” She adds: “I haven't had the chance to ask, but I’m hoping to be pointed in the right direction to find the art scene in Bahrain. I

love to support local artists and hope to attend some well-curated art galleries. I'm also still trying to find a place to learn film and digital photography.” And, as to what brings this globetrotter to Bahrain, she explains: “I come from a travelling family. When I was 12 I moved to Japan while cousins lived in Brazil. So from a young age, I never really had a ‘home’ but just stopping points in life. “I'm an avid traveller and had the opportunity to work in Bahrain or return to Japan. I did some research and learned of Bahrain's vast expat and diverse community and decided to give Bahrain a chance. I certainly expect to be challenged as I adjust to life in the Middle East and hope I transition well. Is it allowed to say that I look forward to all the scrumptious food in Bahrain? Because, I do. If you ask my mom, she would say I might need to focus on finding a husband rather than researching places to go on holiday! “Being single with no children I don't like to look at any city as permanent. But who knows, this might be the place I will finally call home.” g www.womanthismonth.com

As well as her journey to compete alongside the best of the best, Noof tells us more about her project, a survival game called Apollo X in which the player is stranded in outer space and must deal with fighting off horrendous creatures along with their own emotions. WTM: What is your role in Team Vanguards? What was the project about? NA: I am the business developer and user interface artist for the team. The project is a sci-fi horror game that uses virtual reality (VR) and biofeedback technology that adapts according to the player's heart rate. The more scared you get, the scarier the game becomes. This can be used to help people control their emotions. The game is not only for entertainment purposes but could also be used as a therapeutic tool. Being the female in the duo, did you ever find your ideas being in conflict with the other person? We regularly discuss ideas and decisions before implementing them. Thankfully, gender was never a factor in our discussions. www.womanthismonth.com

We regularly discuss ideas and decisions before implementing them. Thankfully, gender was never a factor in our discussions. What are your future hopes and aspirations? I am currently eager for us to win the world finals and be able to publish our game. I would also love to start a movement which encourages game developers in Bahrain to work on their talent. How was your experience at the Pan Arab semi-finals in Egypt? We saw creative Arab minds come together under one roof to communicate and share their wonderful ideas with the rest of us. The ideas were brilliant and very interesting, and we got to learn from other cultures. What does the team have planned for the world finals in Seattle? We are planning to enhance the game by

creating more content, augment the VR experience and deliver all this in the best format so that we can impress the judges in all ways possible. What gives your project an edge from the rest of them that will help to impress the judges? From my research, we are the only project that uses the latest in high-end technology and adaptive game play. We believe those are going to be the two major factors for our project. Tell us something people don't necessarily know about you. I am a curious person and love to learn the latest trends and keep up to date with them while experimenting with new things. I am a passionate person who strives to achieve more in life and would stop at nothing to reach my goals. I live to learn and master skills. More women in the region are emerging as tech enthusiasts. What is your take on this? I am happy to see that women are becoming more encouraged to try and enter new fields and that men are supporting them to do so. g August 2016

L L A READ T I T U ABO W

hen you love beauty as much as we do, from the latest treatments to new products and star style, it goes without saying that we simply can’t get enough of it. When we’re not checking out products in the office, we’re researching online to find out what other people are saying. We're big fans of the region’s army of beauty bloggers, here we introduce you to four of our favourites.

Sisters in Style

The Syeda girls love fashion and beauty and make it a joint effort to tell us all about it.

Any advice for beauty fans who want to start their own blog? Yes! You need to be 100-per-cent honest even if it's a sponsored product. If a particular company sends you a really expensive product and you genuinely didn't find it useful then let your readers know!

The Modest Belle Sara Abdul Ghaffar has made a name for herself with readers the world over giving tips on modest style. Who is The Modest Belle? The Modest Belle is a blog that revolves around fashion, beauty and lifestyle. I am a bubbly and positive person who enjoys life's simplest pleasures. I enjoy travel, delicious food and spending time with my family and loved ones. I began my career working in the PR industry, which exposed me to the blogosphere in Bahrain. I was Sara Abdul Ghaffar motivated by the few Bahraini bloggers (at the time) to start my own blog - something I had always wanted to do.

How long have you been blogging and what made you start? We began blogging in the summer of 2013. The journey so far has been remarkable and exciting, we can still remember the thrill we had when we first typed up a fresh blogpost titled ‘About us’. We've always been fans of beauty products and all things girly since a young age. We would religiously read the beauty section of magazines and online reviews of trending products on international beauty blogs. One day the idea of blogging hit us. A Bahrain-based beauty blog with a little bit of fashion and lifestyle? Nah! Who would give our blog a read? We knew zero about the technical side and had no idea where to start. It has been a purely a ‘do and learn’ experience. The blogging is the fun part: taking pictures and writing thorough, honest reviews for our awesome readers.

What made you start the blog, how long has it been running and how many followers do you have? I began my blog as a creative outlet to express my love of fashion and to inspire women to dress modestly. Through the blog and YouTube channel, I have unveiled my passions through writing and showcasing photos of my personal style, my favourite fashion and beauty brands, DIY projects, along with other interests related to food and lifestyle. I’ve always loved fashion and expressing my personality through my style. As a woman who wears hijab, I noticed how other women who wear hijab complain about how difficult it is to dress stylishly. I wanted to start a blog that would inspire women who dress conservatively to be fashionable, as I truly believe you can be stylish while remaining modest. The blog’s been running for around three years now and my YouTube channel has been running for a year and a half. I have approximately 3,500 Instagram followers.

What has been the post that’s had the single biggest response? That would be our review of the Body Shop’s Tea Tree Oil. It got a thundering 5,057 page views! It was also one of our very first reviews and got views from around the world from the USA to Singapore and Malaysia, even Russia!

Since modesty is a popular subject for style-conscious Muslim women, do you find you have significant interest from outside the region? Absolutely. This came as a surprise to me in the beginning. I have numerous readers/followers/viewers based in the US, Canada,

The Syeda Sisters, Omaimah & Areesha

34

Who are The Syeda Sisters? We're two sisters who run a beauty, fashion and lifestyle blog called The Syeda Sisters blog. Our names are Omaimah & Areesha and we're two years apart. We share the blog duties together so we can juggle our studies and work along with blogging. One of us is a dentistry student and the other a finance graduate. We were brought up in Bahrain and have roots in Karachi, Pakistan. We belong to the Syed family, hence our blog’s name.

What has been your all-time favourite review product? That's a really tough question. They're many but if we could narrow it down to one it would be Benefit’s They're Real push-up eye liner. The response was over-whelming with girls applauding for our honest review.

UK and Europe. Globally, there are numerous women who dress modestly, who are not necessarily Muslim and/or hijab wearers. They seek inspiration from bloggers like myself as we have become a 'modest fashion' community. What was the best piece of advice you were given when starting out? Invest in a proper domain name and write about subjects you are truly passionate about. Who is your beauty/style inspiration? Style Inspiration: Olivia Palermo. Beauty Inspiration: Jennifer Lopez – her skin has never looked better and she's 46! I know, I still can't believe her age.

The Make-up Lover Simone Gannon first popped onto our radar when she was living in Bahrain. Now based in Dubai and managing director of Bright Room Digital, we still keep a close eye on her blog, Simone Loves Makeup, for ideas and products. How did Simone Loves Makeup come about? I was living in Singapore many years ago and rambling on to friends at home about all of the cool and crazy makeup products I was buying. Blogging was a relatively new thing at the time so I figured I would give it a go as it would be great to talk about everything in one place, and then I could send my friends the link!

Simone Gannon

You’re mum to a young boy, how do you find the time to blog as well as being a successful businesswoman? It can be hard to juggle everything at times, but I generally manage to keep all the balls in the air. My husband is great and supports me in my blogging and vlogging efforts, which really helps. I’ve always enjoyed blogging and making YouTube videos, it’s become a real passion - so even when I’m really busy, I’ll squeeze in time during the week or at the weekend. What tips would you offer to anyone wanting to start their own beauty blog? I would say just do it! It’s easy to set up a blog and pretty low-cost, you just have to shell out a few BD on buying the domain name and setting up hosting. Figure out what you want to talk about and get going! www.womanthismonth.com

What’s been the strangest question or reaction you’ve experienced on your blog? Probably people asking me where I live, right down to which street I live on, which can be a bit strange! Apart from the occasional odd question, the blog readers are lovely and big beauty fans, just like me! What beauty product can you not live without? Eyeliner. I wear eyeliner every day as I like defined eyes [and it helps me look awake!]. My two favourite liners are L’Oreal Perfect Slim Liquid Liner and Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Get Liner. Both excellent, long-lasting and easy on the wallet too.

The Original Bombshell Georgina Jensen, the original blonde with a blog and a dog (two now) who writes at blondeinbahrain.com and has more than 24,600 followers on Facebook! What made you decide to start a blog? I started blondeinbahrain.com as a creative outlet, as I love to write, create and take photos. I’ve lived in Bahrain since 1998 so know the island well, and have always known that there are a lot of great things going on here – sometimes they're just a little harder to find, especially for expats. I wanted to showcase the beautiful places and talented people, and throw in a few handy tips as well. What would you say is the secret to your success? Georgina Jensen Commitment, consistency, and kindness. I’ve worked hard to get my blog where it is, and dedicated a great deal of time to it. It also pays to be nice to people – whoever they may be. What’s the best opportunity you’ve been offered thanks to your blog? It’s impossible to pinpoint one single opportunity, but the biggest benefit is that being part of the blogging scene has allowed me to make the most amazing friends – many of them fellow bloggers. Despite being very diverse, we’re such a tight-knit group and always support each other. What’s your own favourite beauty product? It’s got to be a bright, bold lipstick in either fuchsia or red. I just love Chunky Funky Lips, and Extreme Wear Lip Lacquer – both WOW by Wojooh. They’re both super-pigmented and stay on all day. What’s next for the Blonde in Bahrain? I'm looking forward to more collaborations – between brands I love and, of course, with my fellow bloggers. August 2016

SUMMER HAIR PROBLEMS SOLVED In the summer, instead of ‘beachy waves’ we’re often left with greasy, frizzy and brittle strands that have seen healthier days. Here’s how to manage and conquer those unruly manes.

T

here are easy and natural ways to tame your tresses during this season. Here are some of the most common hair problems you’re likely to encounter and how to fix them.

B Chlorine Damage Too much time in the pool can change the colour of your locks, especially if they're very light. But it's not due to the chlorine; it's likely because of copper lurking in pools where the chemical balance isn't quite right. "The chlorine molecules get trapped in the hair and oxidise the metals found in trace amounts in the water,” says a Toni&Guy stylist. "It's the oxidised copper that actually causes the green colour. Chlorine can still cause damage, though. The outer layers of the cuticle start to lift up and the chlorinated water can get into the centre of the hair, making it more brittle. “Luckily, there are a few simple ways to prevent the damage. The easiest can be done anywhere — just rinse your hair under tap water before taking the plunge. Plain water binds to the hair, making it harder for chlorine to get to it. “A label.m leave-in conditioner has a similar effect, and can be a good pre-pool option as well. A weekly label.m intensive hair care mask can help repair the damage and seal the cuticle.” Wearing a swim cap and washing with shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated for swimmers to replace lost moisture is also recommended. B Grease We've all heard about how you don't need to — and maybe shouldn't — wash your hair all that often. But during the summer, all bets are off. "I tell people you should wash more frequently in the summer and not just because of all the chlorine and salt water,” says the stylist. "For 36

those of us with long hair; when the sunscreen touches our back and shoulders, it can come off onto the hair making it dirtier, faster."

B Sun Damage The sun breaks down the bonds that make the keratin of the hair strong, leading to weaker strands and fading colour. Just as covering your skin can help prevent sun damage, wearing a hat can help save your hair. “A number of hair products that boast UV

B Sunburn While you're protecting your hair from the sun, don't forget about your scalp. If you often wear your hair in the same position, be sure to use sunscreen on the part. And if you pull your hair back in the summer, apply sunscreen all the way up to your hairline. Using shampoos and products with antioxidant ingredients such as soy, green tea or vitamin C can sometimes be helpful. And if you do happen to do a little damage, cover up as soon as possible to avoid further sun, then use cool water in the shower and normal sunburn soothers. B Frizz In the summer, thanks to the high temperstures and oppressive humidity, flyaway strands increase in size. The generally smooth cuticle covering the shaft of healthy hair is disrupted when the shaft absorbs moisture from the air, breaking some of the chemical bonds that keep hair straight and roughing up the cuticle, taking away shine and smoothness. Stay away from heavy products, and look instead for a label.m antifrizz serum or spray.

protection may also work, as long as you're thorough in your application,” says the stylist. "Work it through like a conditioner so as many strands as possible are coated. To treat sun-dried hair, using label.m moisturising leave-in conditioner should do the trick.”

B Split Ends UV rays are not the only issue at this time of year, high temperatures can also take a toll on the bonds that make hair strong by sucking the moisture out of your locks, leading to breakage. To ease brittleness, the stylist suggests a heavier treatment such as Moroccan oil or label.m argan oil. "True damage can never really be reversed, only cosmetically improved until that part of the hair grows out and can be cut off,” she says. “Products can temporarily glue split ends back together but the best bet may be a little trim to freshen up.” Call 17 001-700. www.womanthismonth.com

B IS FOR BEAUTY Whether you’re a skincare addict or a casual beauty observer, there’s no doubt that we all want to look our best. WTM has scouted out the latest new treatments to help in that quest.

F

or centuries, women have painstakingly undergone treatments to enhance and maintain their beauty. Each year, innovative, outlandish beauty options are introduced, setting a new craze that adds to the billion-dollar industry. Having passed the fad of bird poo and leech facials, 2016 is panning out to be a rather interesting year for beauty trends.

Camouflage Tatoo Those affected with missing skin pigment can now have their patches tattooed to disguise a scar or area that is missing colour. It is a specialised area of permanent cosmetics that falls under the category of medical tattooing. These procedures require advanced knowledge, training, skills and experience in permanent cosmetics as well as an artistic eye for colour.

Multi masking Painting a pretty beauty mask collage on your face to target all your skin issues has become a favourite fad among beauty enthusiasts. A very few of us have consistently 'normal' skin all over the face. The T-zone tends to be a bit oilier, whereas cheeks require more hydrating and collagen boosting products. Similarly, the delicate area around the eyes requires more retinol to fight fine lines and wrinkles. Incorporating four or five individual products for the skin will give you the benefits of multiple beauty sessions in one sitting.

There are various products in the market that offer the option to buy refills rather than a whole new package - how brilliant is that? Even face creams in their fancy and heavy pots can be purchased once and then just kept filled with new product from a larger pot!

Avoid buying pump bottles; the metal springs make them non-recyclable. Squeezies are the way to go. And if you find it difficult to get the last bit out of the tube or bottle, just cut the top off to remove the stubborn product.

SAY NO TO FOILS

The blond bombshell look can cost the environment dear. Hair foils, which are used to create highlights, can only be recycled if the chemicals have been rinsed off properly first. To avoid this technique, look for salons that do balayage. The colour is painted on by hand (foil-free) and the result looks more natural.

3

MICRO CHANGE

Some face- and body-scrub brands have plastic micro-beads in their formulas. It doesn’t sound great to read the word plastic in connection with something you put on your face; however, the worst part is that they are so tiny they escape our sewage systems and wind up in the oceans, where they damage marine life. The best way to avoid buying products that contain them is to download an app called ‘Beat the Micro Bead’, it scans the scrub to detect if they are present or not.

REDUCE PRODUCTS

Minimise your carbon footprint with multitasker picks such as coconut oil. Celebrities like Miranda Kerr and Emma Stone are said to use it in their hair or as a hand cream - why don’t you give it a try? There are other products that are natural and can be added to your beauty regime such as honey and aloe vera. You can find lots of natural face-mask recipes online.

Never thought of your beauty footprint? Well, it’s definitely there! But, fear not, Fernanda Langhammer has come up with some ways to do good, look good and even, save money!

CLEANSING SESSION

7

THROUGH TO THE END

According to research by Vaseline, women waste an average of 5,846 products in their life time. That’s a lot of unused items that go straight into the bin. Have a look at your beauty cabinet to work out which products you bought but didn’t like and see if any of your girlfriends would like to try them. And if the reason for not finishing them is the difficulty of extracting the very last drop, use a lip gloss applicator to get at it.

At the end of the day, what you really want to do is to remove all the make-up that clogs your pores and makes your skin uncomfortable. Tons of cotton pads are wasted during this process. Clinique has come up with a solution with its ‘Take the Day Off Cleansing Cloth' - it’s reusable and goes into the laundry pile.

Spot on Base Finding the right foundation is not only about texture, it has as much to do with the right colour. To create the appearance of unblemished skin, you can use concealers and learn all about application. But mainly, you must find the colour that looks the closest to your natural skin tone. One mistake we all make when picking a foundation is to apply the tester on the back of our hand, under artificial light. The best way is to put a little bit on your face and look for natural light to see if you’ve got the right shade (use your pocket mirror!). Pink Pout Nude lipsticks are the season’s most popular shade and great for everyday wear. However, if you are tired of natural tones and don’t want to go red, opt for pink; it matches all skin colours and gives an extra oomph to your look. It also stands out with intense blue eyes. But, if you’re wearing a showy colour on your eyes, opt for a matte finish lipstick. www.womanthismonth.com

THE TOOTH of the Matter! Your pearly whites are companions for life – that’s enough reason to give them regular, loving care, which may not be so tender for their own good, writes Behnaz Sanjana.

O

ur teeth may not be the very first feature that people notice, but they are definitely on the first impressions radar; reason enough to maintain a healthy smile. We’ve been warned about cavities since we first bit into candy, but Dr Komal Sharma, endodontist at Al Hilal Hospital, Muharraq, addresses common dental issues that you may be oblivious to.

Gingivitis: “Your gums actually attach to the teeth at a lower point than the gum edges that you see. This forms a small space called a sulcus. Food can get trapped in this space and cause a gum infection or gingivitis,” says Dr Komal. She continues: “Plaque, a thin film of bacteria, constantly forms on the surface of your teeth. As plaque advances, it hardens and becomes tartar. When plaque extends below the gum line, infection can develop.” Gingivitis is often caused by inadequate oral hygiene, but is reversible with professional treatment and good dental hygiene. Other causes of gingivitis include hormonal changes; diseases such as cancer, diabetes and HIV; certain medications; and smoking as well as heredity. Those who are genetically predisposed may be up to six times more likely to develop some form of gum disease. Gingivitis causes the gums to become red, swollen and to bleed easily. There is usually little or no discomfort at this stage. Left unchecked, it can advance to periodontitis, where the inner layer of the gum and bone pull away from the teeth and form pockets, which collect debris and can become infected. “As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. When this happens, teeth are no longer anchored in place, they become loose and fall out. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults,” warns our expert. Prevention of this problem lies in proper plaque control. Dr Komal advocates professional cleanings at least twice a year, daily brushing to eliminate plaque from the surfaces of the teeth that can be reached and flossing to get at food particles and plaque from in between the teeth and under the gum line. Antibacterial mouth rinses can help 44

NEW ADVANCES IN WOMEN’S HEALTH M

This popular medical institution now offers a new methodology to help women restore genital function and youthful sensitivity.

iddle East Medical Center (MEM) introduces an exciting new therapy – Mona Lisa Touch – a state-of-the-art, minimally-invasive outpatient solution that uses laser technology to provide optimal care for various feminine concerns. The procedure is fast, painless and completely safe, providing highly effective results. Life processes such as childbirth, weight fluctuations and hormonal changes during menopause may overstretch and damage vaginal tissue and the pelvic floor, and alter the mucosal tone of the vaginal wall. These changes can lead to conditions such as stress urinary incontinence (SUI), vaginal atrophy, dryness and recurring infections – negatively affecting a woman’s quality of life and self confidence.

Mona Lisa Touch is a versatile solution that enables the gynaecologist to treat various feminine indications quickly and effectively. The procedures do not require anesthesia or downtime, ensuring that women can resume their routine and regain confidence soon after treatment. Vaginal Rehabilitation After Childbirth Post-delivery, the vaginal area may feel stretched and dry and the pelvic floor may be weakened. Mona Lisa Touch rehabilitates the entire vaginal area by reinforcing and toning vaginal tissue, restoring its strength and flexibility. Post-Menopausal Discomfort The shift in hormones that occurs with menopause can cause the

lining of the vagina to become thinner, drier, less elastic and inflamed. Mona Lisa Touch rejuvenates the vaginal lining, increasing the thickness of the vaginal walls and restoring natural lubrication. The treatment reduces uncomfortable symptoms such as itching, burning and friction and helps improve sexual function. Stress Urinary Incontinence SUI involves involuntary leakage of urine in response to increased intra-abdominal pressure during activities such as coughing, sneezing, heavy lifting and physical activity. The Mona Lisa Touch laser stimulates collagen renewal as well as contraction of the elastin fibres, inducing rejuvenation and tissue remodelling, repairing and

DROP THE VACATION KILOS Holidays over? Here’s your post-binge weight-loss plan to help you get back in shape.

P

ost vacation blues? If you have returned from your vacation carrying a few extra pounds, don’t worry, you’re not alone. After all that bingeing it’s smart to get back on track by making small and realistic changes to your diet and fitness regime as soon as possible. With Fitness First’s expert advice, you’ll be back to your best in no time. 1. Shed those pounds with exercise: Getting back to a regular exercise routine post vacation does take time but you don’t have to bounce back immediately into a strenuous exercise regimen, do it gradually. Results will come as long as you start putting in the effort. Squeeze in gym time and begin with low-intensity exercise. Some light cardio as a warm up to your workout will help prevent injuries and increase your heart rate right before you start. This kind of exercise is very important when you finish your workout as well. It should be less intensive than your main workout and will help to lower the heart rate to regular levels. Group exercise classes are another healthy option to get back on track if you’re not too interested in weight lifting or regular cardio training. Getting fit as part of a group also helps you stay motivated. www.womanthismonth.com

Don’t forget to stretch after exercising as it will help prevent post-training body soreness.

calorie-laden foods and become more focussed towards chasing your weight-loss goal.

2. Lose weight gradually: Though you might have put on some weight quite quickly, be prepared that you might not shed the pounds as fast. The point is, don’t set unrealistic weight-loss goals that will eventually make you feel demotivated down the line. You can challenge yourself to lose weight little by little and measure your progress regularly to ensure you are on the right track.

4. Control your portions: Even when you have chosen healthier alternatives, portion control is still crucial to your weight-loss journey. You should opt for small portions of complex carbs (brown rice, wholemeal bread, pasta, etc), specially during the evening, and give priority to options that are rich in protein such as chicken, steak and eggs etc. And don’t forget the good fats as well – avocado and sugar-free peanut butter are good options that can rely on.

3. Make healthy choices: Moderation, not deprivation is the key. Any drastic changes in your lifestyle are not going to bring you desired results. Instead of cutting down sugar completely, find healthier alternatives to your sugary treats, try having fruits for dessert and reduce the frequency of calorie-rich food. Once you gain momentum in weight loss, you will feel motivated enough to avoid

Updating your plate, dressing up healthier salads and building nutritious meals and snacks are just some of the ways that will help your weight loss journey, but what will actually jumpstart you towards shedding calories is the way you choose your fitness moves. Get back in action now! August 2016

showcase BAHRAIN SPECIALIST HOSPITAL

TACKLING MENSTRUAL MIGRAINES Dr Piyush Ostwal, neurology specialist, explains the causes and treatment of hormonal headaches.

M

enstrual migraines, also known as ‘hormone headaches’, are a type of migraine occuring in response to changes in hormone levels during the menstrual cycle. Many sufferers experience a throbbing pain on one side of the head, often behind the eye or in the back of the head and neck, which can last from a few hours to a few days. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines, in general, occur three times more frequently among women than men. Of these women almost 60 per cent experience menstrual migraines. Hormones, including

oestrogen and progesterone, fluctuate throughout the course of a woman’s cycle to regulate her ovulation and menstruation. Menstrual migraines may occur before, during or immediately after a woman's period or during ovulation. Although they can occur at different times during the cycle, a woman will usually experience her menstrual migraine at the same phase each month. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain, is the primary hormonal trigger of all migraine headaches and research suggests that for women with menstrual migraines, serotonin levels may be impacted by fluctuations in other female hormones, such as oestrogen. Because oral contraceptives influence oestrogen levels, women on birth control pills may also experience menstrual migraines. Women with menstrual migraines are treated with acute medications. If attacks are very frequent, severe or disabling, women may also benefit from use of preventive medication.

Doctors recommend a treatment based on the severity and frequency of headaches and the past response to other treatments. If standard preventive measures are unsuccessful at controlling menstrual migraines, hormonal therapy may be indicated. This may involve the use of supplemental oestrogen taken prior to and during menstruation. Another approach for women who take an oestrogen/progesterone oral contraceptive is to take it daily without the monthly break for three to six months. The reduction in menstrual periods can provide a method of preventive treatment. If you’re unsure about whether you are experiencing a migraine or if menstrual migraines are affecting your quality of life, you may benefit from a discussion with your doctor. For more information email the doctor on piyush.ostwal@bsh.com.bh.

BEHBEHANI BROTHERS

PACKING A PUNCH

This marque’s newest addition to the Cayenne portfolio is now on the market. Apple Sharma put it to the test to see if it lives up to its name.

W

hoever said women only go for looks (probably a man) has obviously never seen the fairer sex drive the new 2016 Cayenne GTS. Now, don’t get me wrong, looks matter but so do muscles. And with the GTS badge, this new Cayenne delivers just that and more. Ladies, if you’re wondering about the significance of the badge, let me tell you – when you hear GTS attached to pretty much anything to do with cars, it should conjure up an image of power, and we’re talking about brute strength here – if only choosing a man was that simple! The Cayenne GTS is a powerful machine that resonates with the name on more levels than one. It’s extremely sporty to start with – that was one of the first things I noticed when I stepped into the car. Externally, the Cayenne showcases several eye-catching design elements, including the turbo nose section with large air intakes and the Sport Design package that comes as standard. With more contoured side sills, wheel arch extensions, roof spoiler and lower rear end, all painted in the body colour; the new Cayenne looks a lot sportier than its predecessor. Around the exterior, black accents provide a striking contrast – the model I drove was white, so these stood out even more. All lettering is black, as are the 20-inch wheels in the RS Spyder design, the exhaust tailpipes, the bi-xenon headlights' inner apertures and the fittings of the darkened LED rear lights. The striking GTS lettering is also a new external feature that can be found on the front doors. Similar sporting characteristics are also apparent on the inside, which don’t go amiss. Eight-way electrically adjustable GTS sports www.womanthismonth.com

seats in leather/Alcantara upholstery, with GTS lettering on the headrests are fitted as standard. Adjusting your seats is a breeze, and a lot of fun. Alcantara is the predominant upholstery material. The interior GTS package is optionally available in carmine red or rhodium silver with rev counter face, decorative stitching, headrest lettering and safety belts in a contrasting colour. The extremely comfortable seats make you feel sporty and chic at the same time, a definite win win! You don’t necessarily have to be a petrol head to appreciate power and attitude, and this car has lots of it. But, because Porsche drivers like their cars to be sporty, it would be unfair if I didn’t talk a little about the engine. The vehicle’s performance-oriented enhancement of the new power unit is evident in its 3.6-litre V6 bi-turbo engine. Its consumption is lower, which means it’s easier on the wallet, and it delivers improved levels of performance, an added plus. Compared to the previous model, which had the V8 engine, the power output has risen by 20hp to 440hp and torque is up 85Nm to 600Nm,

while the fuel consumption has gone down by up to 0.9 l/100 km. Now, I come to my favourite part – the sweet sound of speed! The Cayenne GTS accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, or 5.1 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package. That's 0.5 and 0.6 seconds respectively less than the previous model. Top speed is 262 km/h, which, unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to test what with the speed cameras dotted around the island and being rather fond of my liberty. Its sports exhaust system is what gives the car its undeniable GTS sound, which, even if you’re not a great fan of fast cars, you learn to appreciate the more time you spend in the Cayenne GTS. The car handles amazingly at turns and roundabouts. I attribute that to its suspension with its unmistakable lateral dynamics. The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) damping system has a sporty set-up; alongside standard air suspension the vehicle sits 20mm lower. Additional standard features include the brakes from the Cayenne Turbo with 390-millimetre discs on the front axle (358mm at the back), inclusive of brake callipers painted red in typical turbo fashion. Despite its power, the cayenne GTS is a dream to drive. I was surprised at how safe and athome I felt in this car – I could quite easily live in it. It’s smooth, dependable and definitely perks you up – just like your morning coffee! With a slightly hefty price tag of BD39,000, I would say if you’re not short of a few bob or two – splurge – as the Cayenne GTS will definitely not disappoint. August 2016

Teenage Dream

Teenagers the world over want their own space. How you make that space attractive though, is often down to mum and dad (and budget). Take a white base and add in some funky prints, bright colour pops and a sofa-bed for when friends stay over and you’ve got a room any teen will love. Make sure you also set aside study space and plenty of storage, so there’s no excuse for it to look like the tipple teenage tip.

You don’t need to splash out a whole lot of cash to get a room scheme that will keep your teen happy. Get them involved in the planning and even in decorating the walls. Since Bahrain has so much rented accommodation, interesting paint effects are a great way to personalise the space.

DELICACIES FROM THE NORTH WTM chats with chef Das, who is heading the culinary team at a new North Indian restaurant.

J

oining the arsenal of gastronomic abodes within the magnificent desert oasis of the Al Areen Palace and Spa, Roti Boti will offer authentic North Indian flavours. The menu has been created by seasoned executive sous chef Janardan Das, who has more than 20 years of kitchen experience in Muscat, Dubai, Qatar and India. He gives us a sneak preview of what will be on offer. Tell us more about the concept of the menu for the new venue. The concept leans towards North Indian food, mainly dum pukht-style slow cooking, which is associated with the Awadh region. Vegetables or meat are cooked in a vessel over a very low flame, resulting in robust flavours. The classic biryani is a good example of this particular style of cooking. Why is the restaurant called Roti Boti? We wanted to let people know that this is a

pure Indian restaurant, bringing in a blend of roti, a popular Indian bread, and boti, which translates to meat chunks, thus informing people about the cuisine simply by reading the name. Are there any dishes that will be emphasised in particular? The spotlight will be on home-made food such as seasonal vegetarian dishes, the leaf-based dish saag, and more, according to the availability of the ingredients. What do you have in store for guests in terms of dessert? I will take the unconventional route and offer items that usually can’t be found in other restaurants on the island such as mishty doi, which is a Bengali dish made of fermented sweet yogurt and jaggery, traditional Indian ice cream called kulfi and creamy rice pudding, phirni. Urban Indian Flavours

Serving an eclectic variety of Indian food and set in a capricious atmosphere, this restaurant in Adliya gives you bang for your buck.

G

rowing up in India, the best part about long, interstate road trips was stopping by at a ‘dhaba’ for a meal. These little eateries, prominent alongside Indian highways, are characterised by cots to sit upon and serving delectable North Indian cuisine that’s easy on the pocket. The Urban Dhaba in Adliya offers a modern take on the traditional dhaba concept. The décor is elegant yet fun, with quirky posters on the walls, tables instead of cots and bursts of colour everywhere. The tables double as board games; a great way to kill time whilst waiting for your food to arrive. The owner, a jolly chap who goes by the name Tirath Singh, explained that the idea for the restaurant was born because he wants to offer guests exceptional food at a reasonable price, akin to the real concept of a dhaba. After a quick chat with Tirath about the menu, he suggested an assortment of chicken kebabs as appetiser. I fidgeted with the dice and tried my luck at a game of Snakes and Ladders before the waiter came over with two steel glasses and plates, exactly how it is served in traditional settings. We were served with conical-shaped stuffed

popadums to begin with, which were filled with a medley of chopped veggies seasoned predominantly with cumin. The kebabs came in a smoking hot copper vessel, with a presentation so stunning that I almost didn’t want to ruin it. It wasn’t long till the aroma of the marinade seduced me and I gave into temptation and picked up a skewer. There were three different kebabs – the Murg Banjara, Murg Malai Tikka, and Murg Patakha. Each had a distinctly different flavour, and the chicken was tender and juicy. The portion of the kebabs makes it perfect for sharing between two people. I forgot how heavy Indian meals are, so I was slightly overwhelmed when the massive main course arrived at the table. The Chicken Haye Tauba sizzler was accompanied by Paneer Tikka Masala and naan bread. Again, the presentation was top-notch, a thorough delight for the senses. The cottage cheese in

the Tikka Masala was soft and fluffy, definitely homemade, steeped in robust flavour. For dessert, we were given a sweet platter with all the favourites – Gulab Jamun, Kesar Kheer, Gajar ka Halwa, and Rasmalai. Each has a delicate aroma and texture, with varying degrees of sweetness. The food is so authentic that, if I closed my eyes, I don’t think I would be able to tell if I was in a restaurant in Bahrain or a dhaba in India. For more information, call: 17 162-761

PARENTING

Back to School While many may still be on holiday, August is the month when parents’ thoughts turn to the day when their little, and not so little, ones head back to school. PARENTING | back to school

RETURN TO THE CLASSROOM Follow our 10 top tips for a painless transition into the new school year. 1 Make Shopping Fun

If your child is nervous about starting a new school, taking them shopping for their uniform and supplies can be a good way to get them engaged. Reward good behaviour on the shopping trip with lots of praise, try to inject a sense of excitement and maybe get them to model their new uniform for siblings or friends. It’s also a good move to shop as early as possible as, the closer it gets to the start of the new term, the less likely you are to bag a bargain.

2 Be Prepared

Ask the school for classroom supply lists before shopping for school supplies. Forewarned is forearmed ... and helps protect the family budget. Items like a themed lunchbox and new pencil cases and books help make the ‘back to school’ experience more fun.

4 Ease Into It

The first day of school is no time for a drastic adjustment of household sleep schedules. Instead, ease children back into a school year routine gradually. During the last two weeks of summer, re-introduce a school year bedtime. Begin waking late sleepers earlier and earlier, closer to the hour they'll need to rise when school begins.

5 Most Important Meal of the Day

Studies have shown that youngsters who eat a good breakfast benefit from better concentration throughout the day, so make sure there is time for them to eat before they leave home. Try to include protein and fibre such as eggs and sugar-free cereal in their meal.

64

August 2016

If the school offers an orientation tour for new students and parents, take advantage. It will give your child a welcome sense of familiarity with what’s to come and is also a good chance to meet teachers and other students.

8 Master the Calendar

Make sure to get a term schedule, so you’ll know when your child will be studying which subjects and can ensure they have the correct books and equipment. As the term goes on, older kids may well take on this responsibility themselves but, at the start, it’s a good thing for you to be aware of what’s needed.

9 After School Action

Many of the island’s schools have comprehensive after-school activity programmes. Talk to your child about developing an existing interest or exploring something new, which could open up ways to make new friends. But, though there are lots of options available, don’t allow them to take on too much, to the detriment of their school work.

10 Home Study

6 The First Day

Remind your child that there are probably a lot of students who are uneasy about the first day of school. Point out the positive aspects of starting school such as seeing old friends and meeting new ones. If necessary refresh positive memories about previous years.

3 Take the Tour

7 Pack a Snack

Kids need to eat and drink during the day and, whether they are having a school meal or taking a lunch box, giving the option to pick their own snacks and drinks will give little ones a feeling of excitement and ensure older students have something they are actually likely to consume. Fruit, baby veggies and flavoured waters are always a good option. Check the school’s policy on nuts before including these in a snack pack as other children may have allergies. Also find out the policy on drinking throughout the day as hydration is paramount, particularly in our temperatures.

From an early age, children will be required to complete study outside school hours. Create an environment that is conducive to doing homework such as a work space in their bedroom or other quite area. Help them to schedule enough time for homework. Establish a household rule that the TV and other electronic distractions stay off during homework time and supervise computer and Internet use. Be available to answer questions and offer assistance, but never do a child's homework for him or her and if your child is struggling with a particular subject, talk it over with their teacher to see if extra help or tutoring may be available.

PARENTING| issues

Family Matters Lamar Kanafani, the island’s first, and so far only, licensed marriage and family therapist, writes for WTM on the issues that concern mums.

What you need to know before the new school year begins…

W

ith the beginning of the new school year approaching, parents and children alike begin to wonder about various issues related to how well children will adjust and settle into their new classrooms. Issues like who their teachers will be, what will they be like, who their classmates are, what will their friends be like towards each other inside the classroom and out on the playground, what will be the academic and extracurricular expectations of the child, and so on. Many parents have these concerns; however, few take what I consider to be necessary measures to help both the teacher and child(ren) launch the new school year to a strong start. And consequently, help themselves, as parents, to feel more comfortable and, to some degree, reassured. As basic as it sounds, making a conscious decision to form a working relationship or ‘partnership’ with your child’s teacher right from the beginning of the school year is central to setting the stage for your child’s ongoing experiences, both in the classroom and otherwise. It is more common for parents to wait until a problem arises or for the first parent-teacher meetings to have a formal introduction. These situations usually occur somewhere close to the middle or end of the first term. At this point, it is quite late to have that primary discussion regarding your child. By that time, the teacher has already formulated his/her own set of opinions about him/her, largely based on what has already been written down in their official school records and their own limited personal experience. Furthermore, they have already established a unique relationship that is more likely to go unchanged for the remainder of the school year if parental involvement continues to be minimal. Forming a close partnership with your child’s teacher will help all involved. The teacher will gain more insight into your child than with the limited time available during class. It is an opportunity for you to give the teacher a heads-up on your

66

August 2016

concerns and what you see as your child’s strengths and areas for improvement, not only academically but, more importantly, socially and characteristically. It is also important to let the teacher know of any familial circumstances (historically existing and/or ongoing) that you feel might interfere with the child’s academic, behavioural or social performances. These areas are all heavily connected. If your child struggles

socially or is/has experienced loss of a family member, for instance, it is likely to affect their academic performance. So the more the teacher learns about your child, especially at an early stage, the better he/she can teach your child, cater to their needs and interests and develop a more personalised approach to your child’s instruction. Working with your child’s teacher also helps highly intuitive mothers gain a better understanding and feel for who your child will be spending the rest of the school year with.

Lamar Kanafani It will allow you to let them know what their new teacher appreciates from them and what the educational objectives are. It will also help you guide them when facing any difficulties or road bumps with their teachers. Teachers too have personal lives and everything that comes with it; and so therefore, they too have bad days that may trickle into their performance in the classroom. Children are inclined to internalise and consequently may need support in coping, making sense of these moments and separating their teacher’s issues from themselves. The benefits to your child are many when you make the effort to form a relationship with their teacher from the get-go. Your children will learn that they too can approach their teachers with issues not limited to academics. Your child will also feel supported knowing that the important people in their lives are working together to help them succeed. And, in turn, they will be more motivated to be open with you about their daily experiences and to grow in their behavioural and academic progress. It also fosters mutual respect amongst the three of you; and so practically, this seemingly twoperson alliance is to all intents and purposes a triangular working relationship. Taking these preventive measures helps minimise future problems and aids in management of any existing ones. Contact Lamar on 36 009-665 or email lamar.kanafani@gmail.com. www.womanthismonth.com

PARENTING | advice

Need to Know

Q

Dr Jinan Harith Darwish is a paediatric allergy specialist and clinical immunology fellow at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center. Each month she answers your parenting questions.

My four-year-old daughter is due to start school soon and I am worried about head lice. A friend’s child got infested last year and it took ages to get rid of them. Can you suggest any precautions I can take and also any natural remedies?

A

Head lice don’t discriminate on the basis of race, gender, age, financial status or hygiene. As long as there is a warm, damp scalp and a blood supply as a food source, it’s an excellent habitat for lice. That means everyone’s scalp is a potential home. Head lice do not cause disease nor are they accountable for the spread of diseases. The bottom line is that head lice are not a health hazard, but they are a nuisance to humans. To bust a few myths, close hair-to-hair contact is necessary for transfer of lice and bed sharing is the most common method of transfer. It’s probable, but less likely, that they are spread by using pillows, combs, hats or clothes recently used by an affected person. For infestation to occur a male and female or an inseminated female must be present. Healthy lice do not abscond from healthy heads. In other words, lice that fall off the scalp are usually damaged and not viable. If your daughter becomes infested, choose a safe and proven lice-killing shampoo. Follow the package directions very vigilantly. While sitting under bright lights take very small sections of hair and, with a metal comb designed to remove nits, comb out from the roots. Start at the nape of the neck and continue until all hair has been combed out. A second person is required to do the combing. Take it slow and remove any remaining nits that you see with your fingers. Check the child’s head daily and comb through with the metal comb. Combing damages nits and live lice, making them nonviable. Shampoo with the lice product a second time in 7-10 days to kill any newly hatched lice. Head checking should then become part of routine hygiene. A family head check once a week is a great idea. Vinegar is an easy home remedy for head lice; vinegar’s astringent quality helps kill lice and their eggs. Take some vinegar in a bowl or spray bottle. Using a cotton ball, apply it

68

August 2016

well to the entire scalp. Cover the head with a shower cap and leave it on overnight. Wash hair the next day with regular shampoo and comb out the dead lice. Alternatively, take a few pods of garlic – the amount depends on the thickness of the hair, crush them and add some lemon to make a paste. Apply to the head, making sure to cover the whole scalp. Cover the head with a shower cap and leave for 45 minutes, then wash off with a normal shampoo.

Q

My teenage son is about to head overseas to boarding school. I would like to send him off with a basic first aid kit that he can use himself. Can you give me some ideas of what would be useful and safe for a 13-year-old?

A

First aid kits are one of those preparedness items that people often overlook, so I’m delighted with this question. Every good medical kit should have items that can be used to help stop bleeding, close and protect cuts and help prevent infection from setting in. Infection can set in rapidly, so you need to stay on top of any open wounds. That means it’s imperative to carry the following items: • Gauze • Scissors • Different sizes of adhesive wound dressings • Antibiotic ointments and creams • Broad-spectrum oral antibiotics – Erythromycin, Ciprofloxacin and Amoxicillin are all broad-spectrum antibiotics that can be requested from your pharmacist or family physician after reviewing his drug allergy history as a preventive measure. • Antiseptics and disinfectants – peroxide,

isopropyl alcohol and antiseptic wipes. Disposable latex-free gloves Sterile eyewash and eye dressings Burn creams and dressings Medical manuals and basic first aid instructions; I strongly suggest you read through the material together a couple of times in advance. Even if you do not think your son has allergies, there are certain things that can still cause an allergic reaction. In some cases, above all in people who have food allergies, allergens can cause life-threatening anaphylaxis reactions that need to be treated immediately. • Antihistamine – Benadryl, otherwise known by its generic name diphenhydramine HCl, is one of the paramount antihistamines on the market and is something that should be part of everyone’s kit. • Antihistamine creams • EpiPen – For those with a life-threatening allergy, having an EpiPen with them at all times is essential. They can help stop an anaphylactic reaction and buy time until medical help arrives. • • • •

Homework Help

Children often arrive from school with homework and projects that need research or exercises that are done in a completely different way to what we learned all those years ago. Libraries have been replaced by the Internet when it comes to research and it is a great tool as a homework helper. Here are some websites that can be very helpful when the schools are back in session and lessons start to get complicated.

freemathhelp.com

If your child struggles with numbers, this is an easy-tonavigate website. The material is organised by subject; you will find help in algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus. There are a few games and a forum where you can leave your maths question or search in the message board for questions related to the subject on which you have doubts.

discoveryeducation.com

Offering student resources, it provides interactive games, videos, contests, video labs and activities designed to help with diving deeper into a topic. It is a website that can be used by teachers, students and parents. It’s a good place to look for specific subjects, so you can learn (with step-by-step instructions) and teach your kids. Best of all, the material available can be accessed for free.

factmonster.com

This is a fact-packed site; kids can find all sorts of information on geography, history, maths and more. It is a safe learning environment and the content is written and edited by experts, not outside users. It offers an encyclopedia, dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, educational games and a homework centre. Factmonster.com combines reference materials and fun facts from the solar system to the world economy.

readingrockets.org

Gazing Raphael tells us what’s written in the stars this month Leo

horoscopes

Pisces

Forces at work are conspiring against you to lead you into a confusing and unhappy period as far as your career is concerned. Matters touched upon in June have developed further and the tables are turning against you as the month progresses. If you are really going to turn this one around it will be through quick thinking and a well designed plan. Anything less and you could feel the blow of defeat.

Aries

If you feel a little tired or ‘stressed out’, a break from the pressures of life may be what’s required. Certain events both at home and work will come to a head around the middle of the month and, though you will deal with both, the aftermath leaves you looking for a way to re-boost your engines. A relationship with a relative is becoming strained and you should take time to patch matters up.

You’ve got a lot to be happy about this month and that could be more to do with your own determination over a project than anyone else’s, so make sure you take the credit. You’ve been smart over the last few months, able to carve out a niche role that is now being recognised and appreciated by more than just those close to you. In between all that work make sure you are able to grab some rest and relaxation.

Virgo

Taurus

An unfounded sense of overconfidence will backfire on you this month when you discover that a decision you had been counting on going your way, in fact turns against you. A consideration of where you stand and what you might now achieve in your long-term goals should be addressed. You may be best advised to cut your losses and try hard to begin a new chapter in your life.

Libra

Many of you could be going through a period of emotional torment at the moment but if you really want to solve the problem, you need to do a little self-analysis. The next few months are not going to be easy but you should not be afraid because the omens are good if you pursue this endeavour with commitment. Rewards are always sweeter when you’ve taken the road less travelled to reach them.

Scorpio

Judgement comes in many forms and is yet to be passed on whether your designs on a business venture will prove successful. Firstly, you should be careful to identify your friends and enemies, since all is not as it would appear. Additionally, you may discover that your initial plan will need some refining and it might be wise to bring in an expert.

Sagittarius

Travel is the number one feature of your reading this month and you will be contemplating a move overseas, probably www.womanthismonth.com

in connection with work, although a family related matter might also have some bearing. If you are offered a role in a newly formed company, don’t ‘burn all your bridges behind you’ since there are no certainties a virgin venture will succeed. It makes sense to keep your options open.

Capricorn

This month will see temptation put in your way, probably with financial overtones and you must seriously consider your course of action. Giving in will see you become embroiled in a spiral that can only lead to further complications. If you get too deeply involved, there will be no turning back. Be wary of a salesman promising something that seems too good to be true because that means it probably is.

Aquarius

August looks like being the month when that purchase you’ve had your eye on finally becomes a reality via an unexpected route. It could be that a relative leaves you some money or an investment matures. Whatever the reason, you will soon find yourself going ‘shopping crazy’. That’s ok. You deserve it and you should park any guilt you might feel over this.

Your final moment of triumph in a longstanding dispute is delivered in a fashion even you could not have imagined and you will soon be celebrating a satisfactory victory. A useful ally will make his or herself available to you at the start of the month and this person will go a long way to assisting you in sealing the lid on a period of your life you would rather forget. It won’t have always been an easy journey but it will certainly conclude the way you want it to.

Gemini

A secret concerning money will suddenly come out into the open this August and bring a measure of controversy into your life. You may discover that a friend who you thought could be trusted has spoken behind your back. If someone has lent you money and they did not want the gesture exposed, then you may find yourself falling out over the matter becoming common knowledge. You need to be shrewd and sensible or it won’t blow over.

Cancer

The collapse of a relationship sees you in a weakened emotional state this month and you will find yourself wishing that you could just close the door on the world and forget about everything. There is the possibility that you may even be considering moving house as a consequence of this break-up and a small place on the shores of the sea may be a favourite. Do whatever you need to and pack the fear away for another time or another subject. August 2016

Three things that make you angry? Lies, I don’t like when people lie. In my Opinion, It’s always better to speak the truth. Not being to the point and talking diplomatically and not being on time.
