This kind of check-up should be scheduled when a child is not sick. It is an outstanding way to monitor your child's health and establish a strong connection with your paediatrician. The well-child check-up is designed to track your youngster's growth and development, address your questions and concerns and guide you on what to anticipate next in the journey of raising a healthy kid. The American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) recommends that children visit their paediatrician for a well-child check-up as a new-born; at three to five days after birth; by one month; at two, four, six, nine, 12, 15 and 18-months, two years and two and a half years; and once a year between the ages of three and 21 years. The AAP’s age-specific recommendations for preventive paediatric care cover the following areas: - Medical history; - Measurements such as height and weight; - Blood pressure; - Physical examination; - Sensory screening, vision and hearing; - Immunisations; - Developmental, behavioural and emotional - Anticipatory guidance in areas such as injury assessment; prevention and nutrition counselling; - Dental referral.

The importance of frequent check-ups

Parents all have questions about their children's health, but so often these burning queries go unanswered. Dr Jinan Harith Darwish tells us that well-child visits are the perfect time to pull together any concerns you might have and get all the answers.

ften, a child only visits a paediatrician when they are sick. This way, the paediatrician does not have the opportunity to look at the child’s overall health. The symptoms of a health problem can often be masked by a temporary illness that could be recognised at a well-child check-up.

Well Child Check-Ups Round the Clock Healthcare Thanks for introducing me to this absolutely wonderful idea. Until now I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a ‘well child check-up’. I am a mother of a two-year old and have questions round the clock. I do have an extremely helpful paediatrician, but I feel, like me, many other mothers must be disturbing him with general queries. Google helps but a final word of assurance from your doctor gives more confidence. Scheduling a well child check-up is an excellent concept, so I can have all my questions answered, and can monitor the health of my child in a much better way. Najia. www.womanthismonth.com

flowing dress and suede boots can take you straight to the last years of the swinging sixties or the early seventies. The style is updated, without losing its appeal, with the addition of a wide-brimmed hat and aviator sunglasses, bringing you back to 2015. The dress is an important element in this free-spirit style. It can be long or short and in intense colours and prints or simple white cotton. The ethnic vest adds an extra touch without going over-the-top. Tassel details are the crème-de-la-crème of subtle touches and a patent leather shoulder bag is the carrier of choice.

Boho Chic Bohemian fashion is one of my personal favourites so thanks Fernanda Langhammer for featuring it in the November issue. I believe it’s really misunderstood as people think that only those who consider themselves ‘misfits’ or, for the lack of a better word, ‘hippie’ go for this style. Many miss out on the fact of how comfortable it is and its cheerfulness and versatility makes it so unique. I absolutely loved the three looks that are alternative and had hints of mainstream at the same time, with pieces that can be bought from popular stores. I always end up picking up stuff abroad not knowing that a lot of good items can be bought from the malls on the island. Sarah . 20 November 2015

Italian Nature

Inspired by its natural surroundings, this brand offers a range of skincare and cosmetics that celebrate its local and pure raw materials.

B

ottega Verde is a leading Italian brand that produces and sells cosmetics made with natural ingredients. It started as an herbalist shop back in 1972 in Pienza, Italy, in the heart of the Tuscany region. Today, the brand has conquered the international market with its expertise in the formulation of skincare, fragrances and cosmetic products. To create its lines, Bottega Verde incorporates the efficiency of over 300 natural active principles, preserving the nature of each ingredient for a sensorial perception. The brand headquarters is based in the countryside of Tuscany in a castle dating back to the 1500s, a magical place where history

and nature interact in perfect harmony. The location provides the inspiration for the main ingredients in the company’s cosmetic range. The products that sum up the values of the brand: Italian spirit, beauty, creative passion, nature and high-quality materials. Love for nature combined with advanced dermo-cosmetic technologies is the brand’s secret. The cosmetics and skincare lines are developed in the Bottega Verde laboratory by a team of in-house cosmetologists in partnership with the best universities in Italy. The latest exquisite natural active ingredient studied by the company is the red grape extract of Palazzo Massaini. Made from

grape pips, it has anti-oxidising and antiageing properties that have fascinated the company’s researchers. The grape has an ancient history, being appreciated by entire civilisations due to its many properties. It has always been considered an extremely virtuous fruit, which now is used in some of the Bottega Verde creations. The concept of the stores is to give customers the feeling of visiting the Italian region of Tuscany, allowing them to take a little piece of it with them. FUTURISTIC VOYAGE Post-modern inspiration hits autumn and winter wardrobes with a touch of structural cuts, unusual hemlines and texturised fabrics, without over doing it. Check them out!

ESSENTIAL CARRIER

Charles & Keith gave a modern twist to its handbag. The innovative design is sleek and practical for an eye-catching final touch to your futuristic look. The small carrier has a simple shape so it is easy to pair with your everyday clothes or to complement an evening outfit. And best of all? It is painted in black!

LAYER UP

Playing with lack of proportion is one of the concepts of this cutting-edge trend. Celine bets on asymmetric forms to compose its looks. The wide pieces are layered to create a loose silhouette and achieve contemporary result. Solid colours, instead of the usual metallic, contribute to the architectural visual effect. Futuristic, but with one foot in the present.

JETSON’S FEVER

Paying a visit to the future, DKNY collection added some metallic accents to its asymmetric cut. The black dress with an uneven hemline is a good pick for any special occasion. The silvery application is enhanced by a net covering fabric that gives a more innovative appearance to the piece. The dress is well structured and perfect for a fashionable first impression!

18 December 2015

COLOURFUL TERMINATOR

Well-known for its futuristic DNA, Kenzo kept on embracing the tendency this season. With a sportive approach, the collection has vibrant prints and strategically placed details. The irregular cut in the suit creates a visual distraction that adds character to the concept. To complement the whole 'back to the future' idea, the shield sunglasses do the trick!

KEEP WALKING

Contemporary shoes are a hit! Striking heels and shapes that sometimes defeat the gravity force are some of the creations that can be spotted in the stores. Some of them we even doubt can be worn, but shoemakers swear by them, so we're convinced. The traditional fashion house Salvatore Ferragamo created its own version of futuristic heels to die for!

www.womanthismonth.com

DRESSED TO IMPRESS If you want to opt for a more modern look, Karl Lagerfeld went deep onto this inspiration. This dress/coat in black and silver details says future out loud. The triangular metallic details give an eye-catching uniform tone to the look. It's reminiscent of a sci-fi inspired uniform suitable for a space mission, however the brand did it in a very wearable way.

Style Radar

This month, we selected a team of beautiful celebrities that avoided the popular black frock to hit the red carpet. Be inspired by their choices and embrace some colour at your next special event.

JESSICA CHASTAIN

Green is underestimated colour and usually not widely seen at red carpet events. The solid bright green column dress is a custom Lanvin creation by Alber Elbaz. The silk crepe gown has pearl and brass detailing at the straps for a sophisticated touch. The actress attended the Crimson Peak premiere at AMC Loews Lincoln Square in New York City wearing the elegant frock.

ELLE FANNING

The American teen actress wore a Gucci number to attend the premiere of the film Trumbo in Los Angeles. The ivory and floralprinted cotton dress has an eye-catching embroidered top and lace detail. A dreamy dress that takes you to fairy-tales stories. An appropriate pick for her age that makes her stand-out in the crowd.

ALISSON BRIE

MONICA BELLUCCI

The simple shift dress from the Resort 2016 collection from Michael Kors is transformed into a must-have piece by its bright pink shade. The actress, from the TV series Community, wore the mid-calf number to attend the Women in the Arts Luncheon in support of The Museum of Contemporary Art in Beverly Hills, California. The block heel sandals and thin belt complement the look perfectly.

The Chinese model wore a draped gown in pink blush from Saint Laurent to celebrate the 10th year anniversary of Vogue China in Shanghai. The Asian beauty is an international face easily spotted on catwalks all over the world. The one shoulder dress is ornate with a shine detail that is complemented by her one chunky-earring, an accessory trend this season.

www.womanthismonth.com

The American model attended the Uniting for a Lyme-Free World Gala event at Cipriani in New York wearing a gown from the Hilfiger Collection. Instead of picking a bright shade, the blond opted for a colour that is the opposite of black to showoff her beauty. The white strapless silk dress is beautiful on its simplicity.

Going against the flow, the Italian actress picked a pair of wide-legged trousers and long-sleeved top, instead of the usual dress, to attend the photocall of the 007 film Spectre in London. The look from Paule Ka's autumn and winter 2015-16 collection is a sophisticated choice with updated appeal.

earing a printed top may not be the easiest task; however, it works wonders when paired with that striking pair of black trousers. We all have a safe pair of tailored trousers that we look for every time we run out of ideas, but in this case, that tired (and many times washed-out) everyday pair shouldn’t be considered. You should have a pair for special occasions, maybe with fancy details on the sides and a more contemporary cut, to add to your look. A pair of high heels and eye-catching accessories complement this casual and chic style that suits most body types. www.womanthismonth.com

BOLD LADYLIKE

-line mid-length skirts are a statement from the fifties that keep popping-up in our vintage dream looks. So there’s nothing better than a bold red piece to celebrate your Christmas party. If you want to steer clear of red and black or red and white, opt for a blue top (dark shades are best) with a pussy bow to add a contemporary twist without losing the old-fashioned charm. Accessories will add the final touch, so go for chic and outstanding high heels and an embroidered clutch. To keep it simple, ballerina flats and a plain clutch also work well. www.womanthismonth.com

DAINTY SHEER

ace is always an elegant pick, often covering a sheath dress. Layering it on top of a light earthy tone base makes it even more elegant. The piece in this look has other details that make it an excellent choice for formal events. The gorgeous add-ons are the long hemline, that allows you to expose some skin without going over the top, and the turtleneck collar. If the cool breeze leaves you seeking some protection, pick a modern cape to go with it. Black stilettos and an unpretentious clutch give the final touches. If you’re looking for pure sophistication put your hair up in a bun and get ready to be noticed! December 2015

PEOPLE | women 2015

Ladies We Loved, 2015 Bahrain’s female residents are well represented in many different fields, from law to art, business and everything in between. To celebrate the awesome woman we all are, Woman this Month is ending 2015 with 12 amazing ladies from 12 distinctive areas. We asked them all the same questions to help you get to know them a little better! THE PHILANTHROPIST Michelle Bailey is the founder of Feed the Need, the organisation responsible for fridges dotted across the island which volunteers fill with free food for the hungry. How long have you been in Bahrain, if not Bahraini? I’m an Australian, I arrived 11 years ago to Bahrain to work in consultancy and a month later met the man who would become my husband. What are the best things in the Kingdom from your point of view? The Bahraini people. Their friendliness and love of family reminds me of the small farming community I grew up in and it’s a wonderful place to raise children. Sharing family and food with others over dinner and hearing six different languages spoken but all unified by community and understanding warms my heart. How did you get started in your field? About 18 months ago a photo of a refrigerator placed outside a house in Riyadh to offer free food to the needy, went viral on social media. I shared the article and so many people here in Bahrain loved the idea. I said, ‘Lets do it!’ The name “Feed the Need” came instantly. Our seven-year-old daughter, Layla, donated all her savings to buy the first fridge and gave a talk to several hundred children in her school. We now have over 8,000 members on our Facebook group. There are currently 20 fridges with eight more planned before the end of the year. What do you like most about what you do? Getting the children involved and seeing their confidence and community awareness grow is an amazingly rewarding experience. We all want the best for our children; to grow to be caring, valuable adults and this project offers a vehicle to create future leaders, right here in Bahrain.

24 December 2015

It’s a simple idea, give food to the hungry; 100 per cent of what’s given is received by someone in need. Many expat donors thank me for creating a vehicle enablng them to give. People have come from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain just to donate food and be part of this humanitarian Michelle Bailey project. Visiting grandparents have donated food and shared the idea with friends. What has been the high point of 2015? When Feed the Need won the GO-PEEP competition where people voted for their favourite charitable project. The prize was a short film that we can use when giving talks at schools and corporations. Also, the construction of our www.feedtheneedbahrain. com website and the launch of Feed the Need Saudi Arabia in November. Plans for 2016? I would love to start a Food Bank in Bahrain. It would be a non-profit organisation which acts as a pantry to the charities and community groups who feed the hungry. Supermarkets could donate stock close to its use-by date. A Food Bank would be a conduit between the food industry’s surplus food and the charity sector’s need. Obviously this is a huge project but with industry leaders behind us, nothing is impossible. Bahrain has a real ‘can do’ attitude to business and charity and this is the next step for us. Any tips for women wanting to follow in your footsteps? For those wanting to get involved in a project, I would say volunteer in your community! Be the example you want for your children, for your family and friends and help others where you can. Feed the Need and spread the love. Contact Michelle at mbailey@ feedtheneedbahrain.com or phone 39627883

I am completely in love with our cultural and tourism landmarks that reflect the rich history of our island. • I started as the third generation in our business right after I completed my bachelor’s degree. • I love everything about my job, from marketing to taking care of the fashion jewellery department, I get to meet many people in our society and get introduced to the latest fashion trends around the world. • My highlight of 2015 would be the launch of the Roberto Cavalli by Franck Muller watches in Bahrain, it certainly added a lot of value and thrill to our portfolio. • My plans for 2016 would be to keep heading towards my goals and objectives and be better and stronger. I wish to introduce more exciting brands to the Bahraini market. • The tip I give out is to be committed and constantly inspired and to just love your job, it will make the journey a lot more fun. www.womanthismonth.com

Leslie Garduque

Georgina Jennsen

THE BLOGGER Perhaps better known as the quintessential Blond in Bahrain, Georgina Jennsen is a blogger who shares her views on all things beautiful, delicious and fashion forward. • I've lived here for almost 18 years. • I love many things about Bahrain. The food is amazing, both the local traditional tastes and the delicious dishes served in our restaurants. I also like how safe I feel on the island. And, of course, the people. They're warm, loving and kind, and have always made me feel so welcome. • I started blogging in 2012 as a new challenge and a creative outlet, and it's become a wonderful way to tell my story. • My fellow bloggers - both food and fashion. I love them all. • There have been a few high points this year. Adding to my furry family with a shihtzu puppy called April has been one. Buying an investment property in Brisbane was another. And the third was spending a wonderfully zen week at a yoga retreat in Turkey, which allowed me to put everything in my life into perspective. • I plan to do as much yoga as possible, and to accomplish pigeon pose in full expression. • Only start blogging if you have enough time, energy and passion to devote to the digital world. Most blogs last for less than six months, and there's a very good reason for that. Also remember that your blog is your personal brand. Bahrain is small, everyone knows everyone, and it pays to be nice to people. Nobody likes a whiner! www.womanthismonth.com

THE PR PRO From working in fashion magazines, Leslie Garduque has put her ‘gift of the gab’ to good use and now runs PR and events company Media Circuit Bahrain. • I came to Bahrain in 2006, so that would be nine years. • It’s the convenience of life – and how everything seems to be within reach. • I came from a media and advertising background. My first job in Bahrain was in a fashion magazine. I worked there for several years and it made me realise I have the gift of gab, which I think is very essential in the PR and events business. I did some freelance PR and events works – and voila! Word got out and the next thing I knew, I was contacted for several projects. That’s when I decided I needed to formalise things, so here I am! • I like the fact that my work involves a lot of creative thinking and a lot of action. I’m the type of person who’d get more exhausted doing a desk job than running around meeting clients or doing errands. I love the various challenges of every project. I like the idea of variety, of not having a routine job. • There’s a lot! But I think what is significant for me this year is how we are diversifying our services. For the past two years, we’ve been fashion-centric. This year, we managed to tap into other industries and, so far, the response has been great! • Oh there’re a lot of things lined up! It’s all hush hush for now but it will definitely involve an expansion of our services. We promise that it’s going to be an exciting 2016! • The key really is to love what you do. Everything else will follow. But most importantly, never quit. There will be a lot of humps along the way – and there will even be a time when you will hit rock bottom. But no matter what, cliché as it may sound, you just need to stand up, hold your head high and say (over and over) ‘I can do this!’. It works like magic every time!

Nacira Ferdjoukh

THE HR GURU As head of human resources, Nacira Ferdjoukh is Citibank’s most senior female staffer in Bahrain, she says learning from every situation is essential. • I have been living and working in Bahrain for the last four and a half years. • Rightly so, Bahrain has been ranked amongst the nicest countries to live in for expatriates. The infrastructure, friendliness of the people and the quality of life is commendable. • I started my career in HR back in France and moved to the UK for several years during which I moved into the banking sector. • I love my job, not a single day is the same. HR is a very challenging function as it relates to people. The employee value proposition and human capital-related decisions bear an important impact on the organisation. My role is to ensure that all HR aspects respond to the challenges faced by all departments. • That would be the migration of our Citiphone department [call centre] from the UAE to Bahrain. Over a few months, around 100 people were hired to be part of this critical unit for the franchise in both countries, which was both challenging and successful. • The plan is to keep the momentum on employee engagement and deliver on the HR strategy. • Be patient, be focused and learn from all situations. 8 December 2015

Nawal Joz

THE SPA QUEEN Nawal Joz, managing director of Joz Beauty Division, says you need backbone to succeed. • Bahraini, so all my life. • Despite the smallness of the island, the people have a big heart. Bahrain’s history is preserved by its cultural treasures and the consistency and focus on being business-friendly is facilitating the economy’s growth. Whether you’re a homebody or a partygoer, you’ll find something here for you. Best for me is that it’s my home and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. • It’s a father-daughter succession in a family business. After achieving my MBA, I had the opportunity to break new ground. I didn’t do it alone, of course. I built on the work of my dear ones and I was guided by my brilliant and insightful mentor, my father Mohammed Joz. • In my role as MD of JOZ Group and from the businesses I have worked with, I have learned much about the perseverance and dedication it takes to turn a dream into a business reality and keep a business thriving, despite the challenges. Being a spa owner is one of the most rewarding, exciting, mind-expanding, life enhancing journeys possible! Where else do you have the chance to explore every corner of your creative, leadership and business talents… to make such a difference in the lives of the people you touch, while at the same time living the good life inside the thriving health and beauty phenomenon? • 2015 has been the most important year of my life as I found my life partner and got married this year – it’s been truly a fantastic year alhumdulillah! • Our mission for 2016 is to increase profitability by adding more upscale services. To amplify our portfolio adding new innovative treatments in the salons and accumulating more diversified brands. We will also be upgrading two of our salons. The Main Focus of 2016 is to add mobile spa services to the menu. • You would need backbone to be able take the initial losses and not give up. Many businesses close down because proprietors don’t take into account that it takes three to four years to get out of the red zone [in terms of financial losses] and achieve break-even after five to ten years [depending on the industry]. So unless you’re going in for the long haul, you’re better off at the job that you’re in. Once you decide to take the step, stick through with it.

Gaye Bentham

THE ARTIST After a 30-year career in business, Gaye Bentham has taken her joint passions for photography and travel to the next level to produce stunning prints which saw her stage her first solo show this year. • I have been in living in Bahrain for over 30 years. I originally came out here from Athens, Greece with Citibank, subsequently working for Investcorp and then Arcapita. I retired seven years ago. • There has been a lot of development and Bahrain is a lot bigger, there are so many more choices of entertainment and it was wonderful when the law was passed allowing expatriates to purchase property in certain areas. The one thing that has not changed is the hospitality and friendliness of the Bahraini people, and I think that is the thing that I love about living here. I also enjoy living in a multicultural society. • When I retired, I decided to take a course in photography – it was something I had always been interested in. I bought a Canon DSLR camera and took an online Open University course to learn the basics. A couple of years later, I travelled to Cambodia for a photography holiday, that changed my life in so many ways. • I love that, now I am retired, I have time to combine my two passions – travel and photography. I particularly like to get off the beaten track and endeavour to take photographs that truly reflect the life in the countries I visit – as opposed to just 'holiday snaps'. • 2015 was a great year for me. I had the opportunity to showcase my work in a solo exhibition. Travel wise, I packed a lot in. A trip to Kerala, India; an amazing safari in some fairly remote areas in Tanzania and Zanzibar and I am now getting ready for a trip to Kenya in December. • In 2016, I plan more travel! And to keep working at improving my photography skills. I would like to push the boundaries and take a Photoshop course and learn more about low light and night photography, which I haven't attempted yet. • The way I started certainly worked for me. If you have a strong interest in photography, first of all learn the basics then join a photography group or take a workshop/holiday. But really, the best way to learn is just to get out there with your camera and practise, practise, practise. www.womanthismonth.com

Lucy Wozniak Gill Hamblin

Ghada Salem

THE MUMPRENEUR Pregnant and seeking information, Ghada Salem set up Mums in Bahrain. The rest, as they say, is history. • I moved to Bahrain in March 2007 from Malaysia, I am originally Egyptian. • The friendly people, kids’ activities, food! And the weather in winter and spring! • When I moved to Bahrain, I was expecting my first son. I was online searching for tips, recommendations for hospitals in Bahrain and events to socialise with other mums and expectant mums! That was when I thought to start a website listing activities for kids, recipes, hospitals, salons, etc. Later in the year I started the social media channels of MIB where an online forum for mums was launched at Facebook and another page for classifieds so mums got the chance to buy and sell second hand items. • The best thing about being a mum [which is what Ghada is most known for] is the unconditional love I get from my boys. • Meeting my school friends by chance in Bahrain. How small is the world! That brought lots of good memories. • Studying photography and children's nutrition in order to produce more content for the websites I am involved in. On the family side my plan is to get my boys to learn a new language: Spanish. • Be patient, and try to have at least one day every month where you pamper yourself. Read every day to your child, I found out this is a great way to have a conversation with my kids, build up their vocabulary and learn a lot. www.womanthismonth.com

THE FITNESS TRAINER At the age of 38 Gill Hamblin, of Reps Fitness Studios, took a leap of faith and retrained for a new career and she has never looked back. • I came to Bahrain in February 2008 to open a global fitness chain. • One reason I came to the island was for the weather and to experience a new lifestyle. The community and the culture are the main reasons I am still here, I have some of the closest friends from all over the world. • From a small girl living in the country I have always been active. I used to go with my mum to aerobics in the church hall, went to the gym and classes, eventually progressing to middle-distance running and joining in Les Mills classes. My career was in textiles until I was 38 but my passion was always the gym. Finally I took a huge leap of faith and decided to study to be a personal trainer and sports massage therapist. It’s the best decision I ever made. • Every day is different, every client brings something different and every class has new highs. Imagine having five or maybe eight oneon-one meetings every day where you have the opportunity to make a difference or a change eventually leading to them [clients] having a more productive or healthier life. • Watching the Reps Studios reach our one-year anniversary and also seeing some of those I have known since coming to Bahrain be inspired enough to go on and train and become certified in the Les Mills programmes they first attended with us, and for them to teach alongside me. • In 2016 I want to, hopefully, grow the Reps Studios further and personally, look at adding maybe two more Les Mills programmes to my certifications and travel. • It’s a tough career, prepare for unsocial hours with lots of time on the computer planning and learning so make sure to take time for yourself. If you want to do something you are passionate about then go for it whatever your age, don’t be afraid that it won’t work out, it’s never too late!”

THE TEACHER Lucy Wozniak loved teaching but felt there was something missing. Working with a child with special needs showed her what, leading her to train for a specialised role. • I have been in Bahrain since 2009 but have lived in the GCC region since the age of seven. • Bahrain is truly a magical place in the Gulf, it has a unique feeling that I haven't experienced in any of the other GCC countries I have lived in. It could be due to the size or simply that I feel it has kept its traditions and roots alive compared to the neighboring cities which have grown a lot more rapidly. • My interest in working with children began after I volunteered with the Make a Wish Foundation and Sheikh Maktoum Special Olympics Foundation. I qualified as a teacher and throughly enjoyed teaching at 'mainstream' schools but I knew something was missing after I taught a child with special educational needs. I knew I had to pursue further training and learn more about the challenges these children face developmentally and cognitively. I returned to studying and am currently completing a masters in child development and psychology. • Seeing the children I teach grow and develop, it doesn't matter how big or small these milestones may be, knowing that you have made a difference to that child's development is the most rewarding feeling in the world. • Beginning training in British and Arabic sign language, it is a beautiful language. The smile you receive when a deaf or language-impaired individual knows you can understand them and communicate back, is an indescribable feeling! • I hope to be able continue to teach and support children with special educational needs in Bahrain and also that my studies and research will be able to make a difference. • Working with children is definitely not a normal 9-5 job, you really give your heart and soul to your profession and are constantly developing yourself professionally and learning every day. 8 December 2015

Paula Boast

Josephine Ellul

THE LEGAL EAGLE After starting the year exploring the wilds of South America, Paula Boast returned to the island to become a partner in international law firm Charles Russell Speechlys.

THE MUSICIAN Singer and make-up artist Josephine Ellul returned to the island in 2015 bringing her band The Noise back to their spiritual home at JJ’s.

• I’m originally from Northern Ireland. I started working on Bahrain projects from London in 2006 and moved here permanently in 2008. • From a business perspective the best thing is the fact that peoples’ doors are always open. It makes business development much easier. It allows you to build relationships with people more quickly. As a lawyer, it goes without saying, I am always glad to see developments in Bahraini law and legislation coming through. Improving and developing the law is vitally important. • I studied law at university for three years, followed by a year at law school, before training for two years and then qualifying as a solicitor, eventually, in 2003. • The thing I like most about my job is the challenge. As lawyers we are basically just problem solvers. But every day we see an array of different business problems arising in a multitude of different ways. I also enjoy that my job allows me to become part of the business community itself. I do that through my role as the vice chairperson of the Bahrain British Business Forum. • Moving law firms. Choosing to move along in your professional life is always a tough very decision. Never ever one to be taken lightly. Deciding to stay in Bahrain to achieve that new move was just as important. • On the business side in 2016 I will be focusing on building my construction, engineering and projects practice, meeting more people and building more relationships. On the personal side, I will probably go on a mountaineering trip in the Himalayas and fit in some scuba diving along the way. • Forget about gender - just believe in your own ability. Be as ambitious and as driven as you want to be - but always be courteous and kind to people. Stay balanced and look after yourself - stress will get you nowhere and no one will ever thank you for it. Start your networking and business development skills base early, keep practising - in the end it will become your core skill to help build your business.

• I performed my first show here for JJ's Irish Restaurant in 2009 for the 10th birthday, then started a residency there in March 2012. I took a year out last year and have been back since August 2015. • The best thing about Bahrain is the people, for me this feels like home now. There is such an eclectic mix of people and cultures and everyone has been so welcoming. I feel safe and at ease here. Also there is good support here for people with ideas and a good work ethic. If you want to do well, you can. • I’m a self-taught singer and have learnt the business over 20 years of performing. If I didn't know how to do something I found out. So now I create and handle everything. I manage and promote the band, act as agent, negotiate all contracts, and sing. The make up artistry was a natural progression from performing and I trained in Hong Kong on my year out to advance my knowledge and practise my skills. • The best thing about my job is making people happy. My trade is happiness, be it by connecting with an audience via the band or making someone see a beauty in themselves, they hadn't seen before. There is nothing comparable to the buzz I feel on stage or from witnessing a person grow in confidence from a little makeup. • I loved living in Hong Kong for a while and learning a new skill was great but, for me, returning to JJ's has been the high point of 2015. • For the future, I plan to establish myself more as a make-up artist and carry on singing as it's my passion. • It sounds corny but stay true to yourself. Be wary of agents and venues selling bands on the female contingency; don't be told what to wear or how to act. Always be yourself, audiences can tell when something is forced or fake. Make sure you know your rights with regards to contracts and always have a contract in place. Continually work to improve your knowledge and craft. Respect those around you. Finally don't give up! People will tell you to find a 'proper' job. This is my job and I love it! g

magine the smile on an ill child’s face when she is gifted a bag of new winter clothes or the relief that washes over a widow when she receives monthly provisions to feed her children, thanks to Bahrain’s Palm Association. Aimed at giving back to the Bahraini community, the association was started in the year 2000 by two good Samaritans, expats Jennifer Sale and Kirsti Shaheen, with the help of Shaikha Lulwa bint Mohammed Al Khalifa. It has grown to become a well-established

charitable organisation with a sustainable business plan, constitution and website. We met with chairwoman Karen Tennant and Maria Sorger as the Palm Association celebrates 15 years of leaving footprints of kindness and compassion all over the island. Karen says: “The principal project of the Palm Association is ‘Feed a Family’. Currently, 155 destitute Bahraini families are provided with necessary rations every month, each packet costing BD20.” The families are audited every year; those whose fortunes take a turn

for the better are removed from the list and other deserving families are added. The Association is also involved in Project Rebuild, which helps renovate the homes of poor families. Maria says: “Corporates come forth to donate goods like appliances or furniture and rebuild run-down homes, but it’s getting difficult to convince organisations in Bahrain to give something to the community. The concept of corporate social responsibility has caught on in Bahrain, but not as much as in multinational companies.”

The Palm Association’s Adopt-A-Family initiative will soon be launched, wherein one can ‘adopt’ a family for a month, a few months or a year by sponsoring their monthly rations for that period of time. The Palm Association also goes that extra mile to foster the spirit of giving in school children through its School Outreach Programmes. Karen says: “It is so important for children to get involved in charity right from an early age.” In keeping with the adage ‘teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime’, the Palm Association helps Bahraini youth get education or vocational training. As part of a five-year endeavour, it has enabled a number of deserving students to study medicine and nursing at the RCSI Bahrain. “The students who have completed their degrees are working in Bahrain’s hospitals, supporting their own families and, in turn, offering their services to the whole community,” says Karen. “This ripple effect is our true reward.” Raising funds and getting individuals to be involved in their projects has become an uphill task, given the global economy. “Many of those we help have nothing in their houses; just a piece of cardboard for a bed and a small stove to cook on,” says Maria.

The duo tell us how heartbreaking their work can be. “Sometimes we have to turn down some families, just because we don’t have the funds.” They are urging people to step up and help the needy. A sum of BD20 may sound paltry, but for some it can be a ray of hope to tide them through the month. The association also encourages those with vocational skills to get involved and volunteer with ongoing projects. g

But the beauty and wellness industry has discovered the myriad benefits of extremely low temperatures on our bodies, and freezing chambers are becoming quite the rage. This special treatment is called Whole Body CRYOtherapy (WBC) and has been launched in Bahrain by Yara Beauty Lounge (YBL) in Amwaj. The process has anti-inflammatory properties, can decrease soreness in a post work-out state, is effective for anti-aging and muscular recovery, helps increase circulation and lymphatic drainage and strengthens muscle and joint functions.

“Its health benefits include boosting athletic performance, with increased circulation and lymphatic drainage. CRYOtheraphy reduces delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and is especially beneficial for athletes as it improves muscle strength and joint function,” says Yara

showcase TONI & GUY

RUNWAY-READY HAIR Choose from three new styles of the season that are taken fresh off the catwalks. All you need to do is get yourself a Fashion Fix appointment.

Nouveau Knot: The bun has never gone out of fashion and is the go-to style for the classy woman. The undone up-do is a superflattering interpretation of the classic low ballerina bun and has been a favourite on the runway. Hair is primed with label.m Sea Salt Spray, back-combed towards the crown and knotted carefully into place. This messy bun is perfect for casual evenings out with the girls as well as to give a relaxed vibe in the day. Best for: long hair.

I

f you want to sport the latest hairstyles as seen on the ramps of the planet’s fashion capitals, the expert stylists at Toni & Guy can do just that for you. With a flair for the ‘supercool’, Toni & Guy is an official sponsor of London Fashion Week and the company has styled hair for more than 60 designer catwalk shows, working with the crème de la crème of designers each year.

Pretty In Punk: Braids are back this winter. Hair is parted deeply to the side and intricately braided from front to back. The remaining section is prepped with label.m dry shampoo for maximum texture and body. This hairstyle gives you an edgy look for crisp winter evenings and shows off your quirky personality on a fun night out. Best for: mid-length to long hair.

Fashion Fringe: Several designers have championed the fringe in some form or another on the catwalks of the world. But our favourite look was the faux fringe — the ultimate non-committal style for those wishing to trial the trend. It also solves the dilemma of the tricky growing-out stage. Hair is crafted into a reverse braid from the base of the skull towards the crown and finished with a dramatic faux fringe, set perfectly in place with a lick of label.m hairspray. Best for: long hair.

showcase ASGHARALI

MASCULINITY IN A BOTTLE

There is a new fragrance in the offing for the manly man – robust, compelling and intense.

A

sgharali, one of the Kingdom’s leading fragrance houses, is renowned for its fine traditional Arabian, Oriental and Western perfumes and is a name synonymous with high quality scents and beauty products. Since 1924, Asgharali has been blending

natural essence oils and natural fragrance essences to make an extensive range of luxurious Oriental and Western fragrances. A brand new fragrance has recently been added to the impressive line – Jamouh. This latest signature scent is aimed at modern

men who are innovative and revel in the tantalising fragrance of sweet indulgence. Jamouh is an acknowledgement of manhood and an inspiration towards passion for innovation. The composition of the perfume is fit for the man who is ''strong, dignified and free spirited but in perfect harmony with nature''. The characteristic composition of Jamouh is formulated with new ingredients creating a woody- fruity-floral harmony that completes this irresistible fragrance. It offers the richness and luxury of high quality ingredients that will exalt and elevate the wearer, appreciated by one and all who get even the slightest whiff. The aroma is a perfect mélange of refreshing top notes of bergamot, blended with blackcurrant and a touch of cedar leaves. The main role in the heart is played by orange blossom enriched with geranium and cypriol. The structure pushes the limits from the floral heart to the base, which encompasses teakwood, tonka beans and oakmoss, contributing to the finish of the composition. Fragrant drops of this gently assertive perfume applied directly on the skin or clothing will create an aura of strength and energy within the wearer and it is an extremely high-quality scent that lasts for hours. This perfume is intended for men, but it is envisaged that women will fall in love with the exotic blend of scents of Jamouh as well. The new edition of Jamouh arrives in a crystal bottle of 100ml eau de parfum which is presented in a sleek stylish gift box. The flacon housing this superior scent is a work of art in itself. It depicts the value and magnificence of one of the finest fragrances you have come across bearing a natural shape – water drops which are clear, airy and pellucid and a cover that is beautifully designed with black leather. Asgharali is proud to have won the hearts of consumers worldwide and marked its presence in the luxury lifestyle sector with the right mix of traditional and contemporary fragrances. The brand has over 100 retail and franchise outlets and stores in the Middle East and South Asia and more than 40 distributors worldwide in regions from Eastern Europe to South America.

MAXIMUM INDULGENCE A flavourful cup for yourself or a gift for someone special, this festive season, coffee connoisseurs are in for a decadent surprise.

A

lot has been brewing at Nespresso for the season and it’s finally ready to be served. The coffee brand has launched its new limited-edition range called Variations which offers the perfect balance of sweet, spicy and biscuit flavours. The collection was inspired by the warming aromas of the festive period and is supposed to be a delight for the senses with rich dark chocolate, comforting vanilla, sweet almond, aromatic cardamom and spicy ginger notes. It comprises three perfectlybalanced coffees, each of which has been paired with Livanto, the Grand Cru with the optimum profile for complementing different flavours. These pairings are tailor-made by Nespresso’s sensory specialists to create beverages that are delicious, indulgent and sensual with an added element of surprise. Vanilla Amaretti combines almond and vanilla giving you the aroma of sweet amaretti biscuits. This is paired with the roasted caramel notes of the Livanto

Grand Cru for a rounded finish. Ciocco Ginger is the daring marriage of Livanto Grand Cru’s fragrant roasted notes with a deep dark chocolate flavour that comes alive with ginger hints and offers a delightfully festive experience. Vanilla Cardamom, a delicate harmony between two exquisite spices, awakens Livanto’s toasted notes for an extraordinary coffee experience. Each Variation has an intensity level of six and is best served as an espresso to capture the evocative aromas at their peak. Available for a limited period during the festive season, the range is also on offer in special gift packs, allowing you to present the coffee lover in your life with the wonder of exceptional coffees with sweet, spicy and biscuit aromas to tempt their senses. What Not to Eat

In this era of health ‘musts’, we are bombarded with guidelines on what we must do to achieve optimum wellness. On a different note, Behnaz Sanjana looks into what we must steer clear of to end this year and start the new one on the right note.

T

railing the aisles of the supermarkets after a tiring day makes it easy to fall prey to edible demons. However, not if you know better. Danah Quintana, clinical dietician at Bahrain Specialist Hospital, explains how what we put in our cart determines our overall wellbeing. BOISTEROUS BEVERAGES Aerated drinks: Thirsty? Chances are you’ll be reaching for that shiny can of fizz more often than good old H2O. “People who consume sugary drinks regularly – one to two cans a day or more – have a 26 per cent greater risk of developing Type 2 diabetes than people who rarely have such drinks,” says Danah. She also tells us that a study which followed 40,000 men for two decades found those who averaged one can of a sugary beverage per day had a 20 per cent higher risk of suffering a fatal heart attack than men who rarely consumed sugary drinks. Women showed a similar sugary beverageheart disease link.

56 December 2015

What’s more, downing cans of soft drinks increases your risk of gout, a severely painful and sore condition. Energy drinks: These cleverly marketed ‘pickme-ups’ promise an instant burst of vigour, but are actually caffeine-loaded killers. Danah says: “The risks associated with energy drinks among young people have largely gone unaddressed and are poised to become a significant public health problem in the future.” An overdose of caffeine can lead to a number of symptoms, including palpitations, high blood pressure, nausea and vomiting, convulsions and, in some cases, even death. She cites that indiscriminate consumption of energy drinks can have devastating effects – Type 2 diabetes, miscarriage, low birth weight and stillbirths in pregnant women and neurological and cardiovascular disorders in children and adolescents. Ironically, these ‘sporty’ drinks cause obesity. Packaged fruit juices: If you want to pat yourself

on the back for choosing fruit juice instead of fizzy drinks; hold your horses! “Fruit juice is not a better option. Even though it has more nutrients, it contains as much sugar and calories as soft drinks. So stick to no more than a small glass (four to six ounces) a day,” says Danah. She favours enjoying a whole piece of fruit, which is lower in sugar and contains the added benefit of fibre. www.womanthismonth.com

Refined carbs contain a lot of empty and unsatisfying calories. Because these foods do not give your body the nutrients it needs, they do not promote satiety MMMM ... MEAT! Processed meat is meat that has been transformed through salting, curing, fermentation, smoking, or other processes to enhance flavour or improve preservation. Think hot dogs, sausages, corned beef, biltong or beef jerky and burger patties as well as canned meat and meat-based sauces. A World Health Organisation report has identified that some of the substances used in the smoking process to preserve meats may lead to the formation of cancer-causing compounds called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Also, processed meats contain nitrites as preservatives to prevent bacterial growth and as colouring agents, but nitrites may form compounds called N-nitroso compounds – found to cause cancer in animal studies. Think about the chemicals and preservatives you are feeding your body in the name of nuggets! A heads-up to those who love to get the barbeque out and start grilling – hightemperature methods, such as grilling, frying or broiling, can form more cancer-promoting chemicals, such as heterocyclic amines (HCAs), and the char on the outside of meats can contain PAHs. Danah says: “The American Cancer Society Guidelines on Nutrition and Physical Activity and Cancer Prevention currently advise people to limit how much processed meat and red meat they eat. The American Institute for Cancer Research recommends specific amounts of meat in its dietary guidance. It says that people should avoid eating processed meat, or reserve eating it to only a few special occasions during the year.” www.womanthismonth.com

PRE-PACKED TREATS Just step into any supermarket for an abundance of pre-packed goodies lining the shelves to satiate your hunger pangs. But, when you take a bite of that doughnut doused in sugar, you are ingesting transfats. They raise your bad (LDL) cholesterol levels and lower your good (HDL) cholesterol levels. Every bite increases your risk of developing heart disease, stroke and diabetes. The same goes for baked goods including cakes, pie crusts, biscuits, frozen pizza, cookies, crackers, stick margarines and other spreads. Danah suggests reading the label on the package to decide whether to dig in or ditch it. “Look at the Nutrition Facts panel. You can also spot trans-fats by reading ingredient lists and looking for the ingredients referred to as ‘partially hydrogenated oils’.” It is important to remember that besides

containing transfats, most treats are plain refined flour – a carbohydrate that is extensively processed and transformed. “Refined carbs contain a lot of empty and unsatisfying calories. Because these foods do not give your body the nutrients it needs, they do not promote satiety and actually lead to more carb cravings and overeating, causing obesity,” says Danah. That muffin you wolfed down will soon transform into your muffin-top. A steady intake of these no-good foods can have an awful effect on your pancreas, raise cholesterol and cause diabetes. Danah dares you to challenge yourself to eliminate added sugar and white flour from your diet for a month. Although it may be difficult at first, your cravings will slowly decrease, she ensures. Time to shop smart to eat right. g

WELCOMING YOUR BABY Having a baby is such a special event that it is worthwhile to think about the process and plan it well. Dr Vandana Kumar, obstetrics and gynaecology specialist, guides us on how to go about it.

A

birth plan is a record of what you would like to happen during your child’s birth and afterwards. It allows you and your partner to be completely involved and in control of the happy experience. Before making any decisions, it is important to get accurate information. Attending antenatal classes and reading about the process is a great start. Discussing the pros and cons of your options in all likely situations with your doctor heads you in the right direction. Dr Vandana advises that all expectant mothers must know the basics of childbirth – the process of labour, signs of labour, pain relief alternatives, positions for birthing, induction of labour, Caesarean section, equipment used for monitoring the mother’s and baby’s wellbeing, birth companions, delivery aftercare etc. All this, amongst

other things, is discussed over the span of your antenatal visits until your bundle of joy finally arrives. However, plans can go awry when complications arise and hence, being flexible with your plan is prudent. Your doctor may need to recommend a course of action which is not what you had originally envisaged, but which is in the best interests of you and your baby. Bahrain Specialist Hospital takes pride in offering state-of-the-art facilities in its obstetrics and gynaecology department which are run by well-experienced doctors and caring staff. We always strive to look after your and your baby’s wellbeing right from preconception to delivery and beyond. Call 17 812-000.

Headaches can be broadly classified as follows: Tension Headaches: These are the most common, occurring most frequently in women over the age of 20. They are caused by the tightening of muscles in the neck and scalp, with poor posture and stress being contributing factors. These headaches are recurrent and last from several minutes to several days. Cluster Headaches: Cluster headaches are a type of non-throbbing, vascular headache that mostly affect men. The pain is described as severe, burning and penetrating. The duration of the headache can last for as long as six weeks at a time. Migraines: A migraine is a throbbing, vascular headache that typically affects one side of the head. This severe headache is one of the top 20 most disabling diseases in the world.

Having a family member with migraines increases your risk. Women are most likely to suffer migraines before, during or after menstrual periods. Botox treats chronic migraine effectively – your physician can advise whether Botox is appropriate for you. Dangerous Headaches: A headache occurring after trauma to the head or one which is associated with drowsiness, fever, vomiting, facial numbness, slurred speech or weakness in the limbs, convulsions or confusion etc, should be given immediate medical attention. Evaluation & Treatment of Headaches Although not life threatening, headaches must not be ignored. Popping over-the-counter drugs, in the long run, can damage the lungs and kidneys. An evaluation by a neurologist can ascertain the cause of your headache and prescribe suitable treatment. For inquiries and appointments, call 17 246-800 or visit www.royalbahrainhospital.com

Your Own Winter Wonderland

The mere mention of Christmas conjures a typical image in mind. Ankita Mamgain shares ideas on how to move away from the conventional décor, while keeping the essence of the season intact.

T

here’s a lot of emphasis on tradition during the holidays. But if you’ve never been one to function within the box, the idea of a classic green and red Christmas can be rather restricting. You could just throw on the lights and call it a day, but the fact that you even began reading this article, shows that you probably do not subscribe to that idea. The island may not give you a white Christmas but let that in no way dampen your enthusiasm. There’s a lot in the stores that can help you create a unique ambience that’ll make you feel snug, different and festive at the same time. A NATURAL CHRISTMAS Mix the outdoors with the interiors for a truly magical vibe. The best pieces for this will be found, well, by heading outdoors and collecting interesting twigs, branches and whatever else you might find along the way. Some stores around town may even stock pine cones. Use these finds as centrepieces and table or counter decorations. You can enhance the look

62 December 2015

by adding more natural looking or wooden decorations and bringing in more plants. A FRESH COLOUR SCHEME Move away from the traditional hues of the season and experiment with something new. There are no rules here and your own aesthetic sense will dictate what stays and what goes in your home. Sparkles and metallics scream festive fervour just as much

as the reds and greens, so dabble in silver, gold and copper to add exuberance. From vases to centre pieces, picture frames, candles, lamps and other decorations, the list is long and versatile. A tree decorated entirely in various shades of a single colour is a stylish a statement and still allows you to personalise to your taste. If straying from red and green seems unnatural for the time of the year, change it up just a little, play with the shades a bit to add a touch of novelty. You can also stick to just lights and candles this year, and bring in mirrors to add more dimensions to the scene. PICK A THEME Well the holidays does make a strong theme in itself, but how about narrowing it down to something specific. Having a unified theme helps the look to flow from room to room or tree to table. Choose to showcase a special collection that you can't have on display all year. Christmas is the perfect time to give these items a place of distinction, enjoy them, share www.womanthismonth.com

them and then put them away until next year. Decorate around the nativity scene and bring in natural elements and figurines, go new-age glam and bring in crystals or even Victorian with heavy velvets and antique artefacts. A FLORAL CHRISTMAS Dedicated to a tree, flowers are not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Christmas dÊcor. Beyond the poinsettia, they don’t typically go hand-in-hand with the holidays. But if you love flowers the rest of

the year, why not use them as the inspiration for the festive season as well. You can take a traditional approach (lavish red and green bouquets), or add a contemporary twist by using clean, modern-looking flowers isolated by type in small vases. Try green Asters, Chrysanthemum Shamrocks, or Craspedia Billy Balls. Even if your favourite ones are not in bloom in December, silk flowers and floral patterns combined with other botanical elements and even feathers can bring out the wow factor.

with your celebrations can be fun. Why not bring in some Arabic influence to your Christmas fantasy? Henna designs on candle lights and Arabic lamps placed alongside traditional Christmas pieces will surely add a unique touch to the decorations. You can even use the Bedouin design tablecloth in red or cushions in the living area to mix in a bit of local culture.

A REGIONAL TWIST The island has a really strong and unique character of its own and mixing local features

Planning a Family Vacation Childhood is all about memories. Good memories! Taking a vacation with young ones can be challenging though. Ghada Salem shares her thoughts on how best to go about it.

the destination and maybe learn a few words in the language of the country you’re planning to visit. Remember Dr Suess said: “The more you read the more places you see."

P

arents usually opt for a short flight, but they want a destination that has things to do for both kids and adults and is reasonably priced. This can be doable if planned ahead of time, and can be a goal for the whole family to share.

flights to these countries are below three hours and they offer many activities for kids and adults. There’s also plenty of sightseeing for the whole family which will make great pictures to remind your young ones of good times with family!

CHOOSING THE PLACE Plan it a year ahead. At the beginning of the school year, for example, or the start of a new year. If your kids are four plus, they can be involved in choosing the destination. Give them options for places to go, get them do their own research about the destination they pick and list places they want to visit and things they want to do while there. If you plan a short escape or a relatively short flight, then Oman, Dubai, Lebanon and Jordan might be good options for you. The

PLAN OF ACTION Now that kids have done their research, parents need to do their maths! Calculate roughly how much your vacation will cost, divide the amount into 10 months and start saving for the trip in a "trip piggy bank". Kids can help in this too by adding money they save. At the end of 10 months, over a weekend, open up the piggy bank and calculate your savings. Get flights and hotel booked and get the young ones really excited about the holiday by asking them to read books about

www.womanthismonth.com

DESTINATION: MALAYSIA Now, if your kids are three-plus, I would highly recommend Malaysia. It has loads of activities and things to do for children and is a perfect place for mum to enjoy shopping! There are many things to be done in Kuala Lumpur, so it’s best is to plan visits by areas so you do not waste your time in traffic, as it is a busy city. Places you must check out are: KLCC area, Petrosains Science Centre, KLCC towers, Menara KL Tower, Aquaria and Bukit Bintang. Parks: Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park, Perdana Botanical Garden and the Royal Palace (Istana Negara) – taking pictures is not allowed inside but you can always take a shot at the main gate and sign the guest book with your kids. If you have aeroplane fans in the house, the Aircraft Museum will be heaven for them. Museum entrance is free of charge and you get to see different kinds of aircraft both commercial and military. Children are even allowed to try out the pilot’s seat in the army planes. The outside area of the museum is a large green area where kids can run around too. Happy Holidays everyone and an early happy new year to all Woman This Month readers! g

The Kindest Cut? If you are having a boy, circumcision may have crossed your mind or be a mandatory part of your culture. This month, Dr Jinan Harith Darwish clarifies any questions you may have regarding this subject.

T

he practice of circumcision dates to ancient times. In Egypt, prior to biblical times, circumcision was performed to improve male hygiene. Later, customary circumcision of male infants was part of the Abrahamic covenants with Jehovah, giving rise to religious circumcisions that continue to this day in the Muslim and Jewish faiths. At birth, the foreskin is attached to the end of the penis, an area known as the glans. Circumcision in the male is the removal of the foreskin of the penis. In 2012, the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) task force on circumcision of the male infant concluded that the health benefits of newborn male circumcision outweigh the risks. There are numerous medical benefits to male circumcision. In the uncircumcised male, the space between the foreskin and the glans must be cleaned frequently. Advocates of circumcision argue that it is hard for uncircumcised children and men to sustain correct hygiene. Uncircumcised males are at amplified risk for inflammation of the glans; this problem seldom occurs in circumcised men. Uncircumcised boys who observe good penile hygiene are less likely to experience penile inflammation. Studies consistently report that uncircumcised male infants are at higher risk of urinary tract infections when compared with circumcised male infants. Male circumcision does not appear to

68 December 2015

adversely affect penile sexual function or sensitivity or sexual satisfaction. Studies suggest that circumcision helps decrease the risk of acquisition of HIV, HPV and, perhaps, herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). There is also some data that it may protect against trichomonas and cancroid infection. Circumcision does not guard against infection from gonorrhoea, chlamydia trachomatis or syphilis. It is imperative to note, therefore, that many circumcised men do acquire these diseases. Circumcision may lower the risk of acquiring the infection, but it does not abolish it. Cancer of the penis is rare, but uncircumcised men are at increased risk of developing the disease. Good hygiene and

human papillomavirus (HPV) immunisation may reduce or negate this risk. Cervical cancer is more common in women whose male sexual partners are not circumcised. HPV immunisation may reduce or negate this risk. There are a few situations that may cause a circumcision to be deferred. For instance, babies who are born with a defect of the penis should be evaluated by a urologist, who may recommend delaying circumcision. If there is a family history of a bleeding disorder or the baby has bleeding problems, circumcision is delayed until it has been determined that the baby is not at increased risk of bleeding during the procedure. Making the decision to circumcise an infant outside religions and cultures that mandate circumcision can be difficult for some parents. A father may be apprehensive that his son's penis appear similar to his own or other men’s. Some parents may be concerned about the risks versus the benefits of the procedure. A decision is best made before the baby is born, although parents should feel at ease discussing their questions or concerns with their paediatrician after the son's birth. The procedure, which on average costs BD40, can be performed at a private hospital before the mother and baby are discharged, or can be performed as an outpatient procedure as late as three months after birth. After three months, the procedure usually requires general anaesthesia. g www.womanthismonth.com

Away on the Holly Days T

Although there’s no place like home for the holidays, for those who want to add the fun of travel to the festive excitement, Ankita Mamgain lists a few destinations where Christmas celebrations extend beyond the usual.

hough it is perhaps the most magical time of the year, travel plans during Christmas can be stressful, chaotic and expensive. The obvious options of New York, Paris and London all are well armed to welcome yuletide revellers from across the world. But the sheer influx of

tourists in these cities at this time of the year renders them notoriously busy and borderline frustrating. So why not head to a destination that keeps the authenticity of the holidays intact, and provides you a much deserved break, so you can truly relish the essence of Christmas? Santa Clause's Village

Rovaniemi

Arctic Snow Hotel

ROVANIEMI, LAPLAND, FINLAND Santa may visit your home once a year, but here’s your chance to visit his. According to some legends, dating as far back as the 1820s, the North Pole is the official address of Santa Claus, but the Finns would have you believe otherwise. Located just north of the Artic circle, Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, is considered home to Father Christmas. Celebrate the quintessential northern holiday with your family with a host

70 December 2015

of sites and activities dedicated to the festival. You must attend The Christmas Fantasy; an exotic experience, in which you are guided by elves to the Great Festival hall in the Arctic forest. Mischievous witches and playful elves are out and about and snowflakes, floating in the winter breeze, make this experience even more magical. You can even enrol in Elf School or take a calligraphy class and compose your own Christmas wish list with a traditional quill.

Other attractions include the Ranua Zoo, home to baby polar bears, wolverines and moose. At Sirmakko Reindeer Farm, you can take a sled-led reindeer safari and the wonderful Arktikum museum is the perfect introduction to the mysteries of these latitudes and the northern lights. Those in search of a truly frosty experience can stay in the Arctic Snow Hotel, made entirely of snow and ice, but equipped with saunas and hot tubs in which to thaw. www.womanthismonth.com

SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, MEXICO n this colourful Mexican city Christmas is both a solemn and celebratory affair filled with ‘Piñatas, posadas and ponche’. In the lead up to the festival, you're likely to stumble upon Mary and Joseph strolling the streets, as locals make pilgrimages from home to home singing songs as they re-enact the journey to Bethlehem. ‘Noche Buena’ or Christmas Eve is actually more important to Mexicans than Christmas Day. A life-size manger is set up in the main city garden in front of the church. The last procession of the season passes by in early evening after which everyone prepares to party. And like any good

Enjoy a long evening of non-stop celebration around the cobblestone city that also enjoys UNESCO World Heritage Site status for its beautiful churches, well-preserved architecture and grand plazas. On the 25th, after family and church, it’s time for promenading through the streets. The day is also celebrated as the Day of Holy Innocents as Mexicans play elaborate practical jokes on each other. If you fall for one, you’ll hear the cry of “Inocente! Inocente!”. VALLETTA, MALTA his Mediterranean jewel offers one of the most inimitable nativity experiences during the holidays that can often include grazing live animals. The 12 days of Christmas in Malta are a wonderful mix of zesty merrymaking and age-old traditions preserved by its strong Roman Catholic community. This is the busiest and most merry time of the year for the Maltese capital of Valletta. Its beautifully lit streets with carols echoing in the background, shops dressed to their best and activities in abundance, extend a warm and festive welcome. Special highlight for kids include

Bethlehem Inn or Bethlehem f’Ghajnsielem, located on the nearby island of Gozo, hosts a month-long nativity enactment that takes you back 2,000 years. Be part of the scene by renting a room that comes with period costumes in the village. Route 66, USA

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Perhaps one of the most famous road trips in the world, this route has motivated many to hit the road for a holiday in the first place. It brilliantly encapsulates all that is quintessentially America, crosses eight states, from Illinois to California, and covers almost 4,000 kilometres and three time zones. You get to experience retro petrol stations, old-school diners and kitschy tourist shops. Must visit spots include the birthplace of the corn dog, Cozy Dog Drive in Springfield, Illinois, Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo, Texas, and wigwam villages in San Bernardino, California.

Considered by many to be one of Europe’s most scenic coastal routes, a drive down the Costiera Amalfitana, or Amalfi Coast, is a fantastical experience that includes green mountains and pastel-coloured villages. Recognised as a World Heritage Site, the drive covers picturesque towns such as Amalfi, Positano and Ravello. Typically narrow and fairly winding, it’s not the easiest of routes, but the spectacular views more than make up for it. The most popular stretch extends from Sorrento south to Salerno.

North Coast 500, Scotland This could be Scotland's answer to America's Route 66. Also known as NC500 it takes you to the country’s far north on a journey along the region's coastlines. The 800-kilometre route offers natural heritage, breath-taking scenery, local food and drink, retail and arts attractions of the region. It runs from Inverness to the Kyle of Lochalsh on the West Coast and along the rugged north coast to John O'Groats, before heading down the east coast. The route can be completed in a long weekend or over several weeks on a more leisurely schedule.

Garden Route, South Africa This route captures astounding scenic views and a great variety of activity as you go along. On this 241-kilometre journey you traverse along Africa's southernmost tip, covering destinations such as George, Wilderness, Sedgefield and Knysna on to Plettenberg Bay. Enjoy the double majesty of elephants on land and whales close to the shore, forest walks and one of the continent's most unhurried towns. Adrenalin junkies can complete the trip having taken part in a range of activities, including bungee jumping, cage diving with sharks, caving, ostrich riding, visiting casinos and seeing Monkey World.

Incredible

Escapes Well-thumbed guidebooks and crumpled maps may have been replaced by smart phones but the allure of a road trip still remains. We list some of the most scenic routes, on which the journey really does feel like the destination.

Trans-Andean Highway, Chile and Argentina For those who want to experience the spectacular Chilean Andes, the best way would be to get in the car and hit this 363-kilometre stretch through the mountains. Starting from Santiago in Chile, it ends in Mendoza in Argentina, the roads winds its way through the majestic landscape. Captivating scenery greets you as you ascend, before you head through a two-mile tunnel that catapults you out into the wonders of Argentina. A Labour of Love Its vibrant façade contains a relentless spirit that strives to offer guests an unparalleled dining experience. Come along for a delicious trip to the Mediterranean with Ankita Mamgain at this beautiful restaurant.

Y

ou might have all the ingredients right, but it’s the fine details that set a great restaurant apart from a merely good one. And only a select few seem to get the recipe right at the first attempt. Nicole’s Mediterranean Restaurant & Lounge in block 338, Adliya, is one of those rare gems, as we recently discovered. Greeted by beaming smiles at the door, we decided to settle down on the rooftop. A fine dining venue, it doesn’t have the intimidating atmosphere one usually expects from such places. The ground floor is a European-style dining room that offers comfortable seating and views of the adjoining water fountains, brought to life by colourful lights. The first floor is a chic lounge that will transport you to the party hubs of Spain and Lebanon and the rooftop is a delightful open air space that mixes a bit of Santorini to the milieu. While enjoying the light breeze, we scanned through the menu. The food spans the entire

coastline of the Mediterranean offering eclectic flavours of Italy, France, Greece, Lebanon and Spain. There’s even a separate tapas menu if you want to stick to small bites. But just as we were making up our minds chef Chris appeared and offered to present a few dishes that are soon to be introduced, which seemed like an excellent idea. The first course arrived shortly; beautifully plated and full of invigorating aromas. Gambas Al Ajillo, garlic sautéed shrimp in spicy tomato sauce and coriander pesto, and Zucchini Fritters with tomato chutney, spicy garlic aioli and herbs. Both offered a grand explosion of flavours and whetted our appetite for more. Next we tried the French onion soup, a time-honoured recipe, that was delightfully comforting. Chef then presented a crab cake dish, served with a refreshing crab and cucumber salad. The flavours were so delicate and perfectly balanced, making it one of the highlights of the evening. The main course consisted of creamy mushroom risotto and braised New Zealand lamb shank with creamy mustard spatzel, grilled eggplant garlic confit and lamb jus. By now we knew, this wasn’t just another restaurant. Nicole’s takes its food very seriously. Having worked in the US for many years chef Chris brings his creative flair and enthusiasm to the restaurant and is eager to please. Full to bursting by now, we still

couldn’t resist what came next. Almost-citrus crusted scallops with spring onion puree, pear onion and spinach ragout, orange segments and lemon aioli. An exquisite preparation, this artwork on the plate truly indulges your taste buds. Chocolate studded brioche bread pudding with cognac flambéed banana, caramel banana ice cream and caramel drizzle, ended this decadent experience. In conclusion, you know what made the husband-wife team, of Fadi and Denise Kfoury start the restaurant in the first place; their palpable penchant for and appreciation of the fine tastes of life. Having named it after their only daughter, they share this at Nicole’s with all their heart and a lot of love.

EURO MOTORS

A NEW BENCHMARK IN LUXURY AND TECHNOLOGY The latest offering from this reputed marque is aiming to impress with a wide array of glitz and gadgetry.

I

t comes as little surprise that the revamped 7 Series from BMW is making a huge impression with fans and critics alike – thanks in no small part to its plethora of new features and design cues. Although still unmistakably a 7 Series, the 2016 model has undergone a substantial revamp that sees it lighter, longer and smarter than ever. Euro Motors, the dealer in Bahrain, launched the new model during a sophisticated affair at the Ritz-Carlton Bahrain Hotel & Spa during which guests were introduced to the technology that offers both driver and passengers extraordinary levels of comfort and luxury. A host of new BMW ConnectedDrive driver assistance features includes the intuitive Touch Command: a seven inch tablet positioned in the rear of the vehicle, offering passengers a new experience in controlling multiple in-car functions. Through Touch Command, rear passengers are able to control infotainment and comfort features, such as in-seat massage options. A unique Gesture Control function, which offers those inside the vehicle the option www.womanthismonth.com

to increase the volume of the radio only by gesturing at the screen, is also one of the new technology features. Paul Yates, general manager of Euro Motors, says: “The launch of the new BMW 7 Series in Bahrain marks a new beginning for BMW, with the new model setting a new standard in both luxury and technology. As we continually look to offer our customers the very best in class vehicles, we believe this model will lead the way in the luxury car market. With a host of new technologies and a new design, we are sure it will make an instant impact in the Bahraini market.” Driver and passengers alike can also look forward to the BMW 7 Series’ Sky Lounge, a panorama glass roof that allows them to enjoy the day or star-filled night sky, as illuminated light patterns provide a luxurious interior light ambience in six colours. Proving that personalised innovation is as crucial as design and ambience, the vehicle’s advanced chassis technology, which allows the driver to adjust the car’s set-up to their preferred requirements, creates an ideal balance between sports performance and

comfort. Similarly, the vehicle’s progressive assistance systems ensure drivers do not have to change the customary positioning of their hands on the steering wheel in order to undertake on-road manoeuvres. Exuding confidence and power, the new model also comes armed with two comprehensively revised engines: the sixcylinder 740iLi and eight-cylinder 750iLi xDrive, with the latter accelerating from 0–100kmph in 4.4 seconds at 450bhp, and the six-cylinder equivalent offering an impressive 326bhp. Ralf Bissinger, sales and marketing director for BMW Group Middle East says: “The Middle East has played a leading role in the BMW 7 Series success, as the third largest market in the world, the flagship model is constantly among the top sellers accounting for between 16 to 20 per cent of total sales. We believe the new 7 Series will continue this trend, bringing a host of technologies in a new modern design, we are confident it will make a huge impact, especially in markets like Bahrain.” Call 17 750-750. Yours is a sign that can sometimes create a love in your mind that is leagues away from the reality. Be honest about matters and it will prove much easier to tackle them. Whilst the other person is likely to be in the wrong, you should consider your actions. Gemini May 22 – Jun 21

After a difficult few months financially, things are set to improve. This is down to a combination of things but in no small part because of your own efforts to tighten the purse strings and moderate your outgoings. The good news is that the worst of it now lies behind you. However, on the work front, certain changes

You can look back on the year so far and celebrate the fact that in all honesty, you have enjoyed a prosperous and successful time to date. last word

In Her Shoes We end our year with Mariam Sallam, the communications manager of Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain, telling us more about her lifestyle.

LIST TWO PET PEEVES.

Smugness and talking loudly.

WOULD YOU RATHER TRAVEL BY BIKE, HORSE OR CAR?

If we are talking about commuting on a daily basis, then I’ve tried all three so I could safely say a car. Imagine being exposed in the rain, or worst, a very hot and humid day. For leisure, I’d pick a horse.

MOST DARING THING YOU'VE EVER DONE.

AN ACTIVITY TO DO FOR A DAY? Diving. It’s a very serene hobby.

HAWAII OR ALASKA?

It depends on the time of year, but I am leaning more towards Hawaii for the sea life. I believe it would be a magical place to visit and snorkel.

80 December 2015

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WORK HARD?

Skydiving. It was such an exhilarating and eye opening experience.

Life. I see it’s a beautiful and inspiring world we live in. Everything has a purpose and as long as you’re alive, what better purpose than to be great at what you do?

WHAT WOULD YOU SING AT A KARAOKE NIGHT?

MOST UNUSUAL THING YOU'VE EVER EATEN. A pomelo. Didn’t like it much.

I’m not the greatest singer but I’m outgoing so I usually am talked into going on stage with my girlfriends. On that note, they have an undying love for 90s' songs. The last one we sang was Shania Twain! www.womanthismonth.com
