EDITOR’S NOTE

ecember means my favourite time of the year is fast approaching and putting together this month’s issue has given me the ideal opportunity to indulge my, usually quite subdued, Christmas fever. To get you into the festive spirit, our Gift Guide showcases more than 60 great pressie ideas to cater for everyone from Great Aunt Flo to the neighbour’s cat. And we’ve also gone a bit Christmas crazy elsewhere with a fab selection of Yuletide markets in the travel pages, a whole range of fun Christmasthemed goodies from me in editor’s choice, seasonal style in Get the Look and Homes plus ideas to help parents make the most of the season. Our interviewees this month are a group of inspiring women. Mona Almoayyed chats to Apple Sharma about social conscience, breaking the glass ceiling and making the influential Forbes Middle East List of Most Influential Arab Women again. Nada Kazim gives Behnaz Sanjana the lowdown on the work of the Aisha Yateem Family Couselling Centre, which helps abused women. And designer Frances Stafford shows off items from her brand new label’s launch collection. For those looking to splash out over the coming weeks, you’ll find tips on buying gold and diamonds and in our food pages there are recipes to try and Puja Tiwari’s thoughts on a very chic new dining venue. In the wellbeing pages there are hints on giving up the evil weed, a subject close to my heart – as I write this I am almost five days smoke-free and feeling optimistic. And, as always, we have round-ups of the latest fashion, style and beauty news to keep you bang up to date. Hope you have as much fun reading our festive issue as we’ve had putting it together and wishing you a very, Merry Christmas from all at Woman This Month.

I loved the 'Homes & Gardens' feature in the November issue, particularly the interview with Zahra Abdul Malik. It sounds like she has had an interesting life and has put her study to good use in Bahrain Garden Club – you’ve almost convinced me to join. However, one thing I do take issue with is Liz O’Reilly’s list of the plants to grow here in Bahrain. I’ve tried for years to grow lavender and each time the leaves just go black and it dies off. I’ve been told by lots of people that it simply doesn’t grow here so Liz must have very green fingers, perhaps she’d like to come to my house and share her secret. Mina. Ed: I think I was just very lucky, I really didn’t do anything special but I suspect planting the lavender in a bed of basil gave the delicate plants some shade from the sun. I must admit, after a year, I am now seeing the dreaded black leaf you mention so I’ve cut the plants right back and am just hoping for the best.

What’s caught our eye in the news this month.

Congratulations on the 'Homes & Gardens' item in last month’s issue. Do you have any idea where I can buy the ice plants mentioned in the round-up of things that will grow here? I’ve often seen them in pots when out and about but have never managed to find them in the garden centres. Fatima. Ed: I actually tried to buy some this week and was told they are a summer flowering plant so not available at the moment. I guess it’s just a matter of keeping your eyes open when you’re at the garden centre. Got something you want to get off your chest? Congratulations, commiserations and remonstrations all welcome. We’ll carry the best one each week.

#Black Swan. An event or occurrence that deviates beyond what is normally expected of a situation and that would be extremely difficult to predict. This term was popularised by Nassim Nicholas Taleb's book The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable. Mr Taleb is a finance professor and former Wall Street trader. He took his title from the shock Europeans experienced when they discovered black swans in Australia. Until then, their data told them that all swans were white, so the discovery was unexpected. The term has been widely used to describe the election of Donald Trump as the next President of the United States. “Donald Trump is the biggest unknown ever to take control of the White House.” www.politico.com #Nick Jablonka. An A-level student whose Christmas advert was widely mistaken for the festive John Lewis commercial, has been invited to visit the retailer. Nick made the video as part of his media coursework, uploading it to YouTube in June where it has now been watched by almost half a million people. www.standard.co.uk

COLLECTOR’S COLLECTION

At the end of every year, Lacoste releases a ‘Holiday Collector’ edition, inviting artists to give their own interpretation to the brand’s iconic crocodile. For 2016, the graphic artist Jean-Paul Goude is in charge of the design of the logo applied on limited-edition items such as polo-shirts, bomber jackets, bags and clutches. The artist also designed the packaging and the advertising campaigns for Christmas. Jean-Paul Goude’s crocodile is a mix of his childhood in Africa, his love of dance and his fascination with the Bauhaus.

CELEBRATE INDIVIDUALITY

In partnership with Arab Idol winner Mohammed Assaf, the fashion store Max inspires its customers with the second chapter of its campaign, ‘Fashion for Real People’. The idea behind the concept is to celebrate the importance of individuality, allowing each person to discover, embrace and express their own unique style. Much more than adopting the latest trend, Max is all about expressing one’s personality, creativity and emotions. To embody the idea, the Arab youth icon is captured in different moments of his daily life to show off his personal style. “The campaign is a movement that has touched millions of hearts through its inspirational message. I am delighted and privileged to be part of this journey that focuses on positivity and pride in selfexpression,” says Mohammed.

FASHION BOOK

Written by Donatella Versace with Maria Luisa Frisa and Stefano Tonchi, Versace is an intimate visual history of the Italian fashion brand. This richly illustrated book is Donatella’s interpretation of the fashion house in the 21st century and her work as the curator and face of Versace. It includes exclusive contemporary and archival imagery from runway and backstage shots to behind-the-scenes images of the Versace Atelier. Original essays by fashion’s most authoritative voices accompany the visuals. The book features shots by Richard Avedon, Steven Meisel and Mario Testino among other important names in the world of fashion photography.

CAMERA GLAM

Michael Kors and Fujifilm announce a collaboration, the photography company’s first partnership with a fashion brand. The MICHAEL KORS x FUJIFILM INSTAX mini 70 instant film camera comes in a gold metallic colour that captures the jet-set Michael Kors aesthetic, with the brand logo printed on the front of the camera and the designer’s signature on the camera door. The photographic equipment features a sleek-design high-performance flash and a smart selfie mode. The collaboration was directly inspired by Michael Kors’ ‘Scout’ handbag collection, designed to emulate vintage camera bags. “Using instant photography has always been such an integral part of my creative process, whether it’s snapping photos of looks in preparation for the shows or taking behind-the-scenes shots. It provides the perfect combination of timeless, tangible photos with fast-paced glamour and modern technology,” says Michael Kors. www.womanthismonth.com

THE IT GIRL The face of the American fashion model Gigi Hadid has been everywhere, from numerous catwalk shows and campaigns to collaborations with well-known brands. This autumn, she partners with Stuart Weitzman on an exclusive design for the brand – the Gigi Boot. The hiker-inspired high heel combat bootie was co-designed by the model and is inspired by her street style. The lace-up ankle-boot has a stacked heel, duo-toned laces and a detailed collar. Available in three versions, black soft croco-calf leather, iron specchio and copper glass.

H OL IDAY S AHEAD

The French fashion house KENZO created an exclusive capsule collection to celebrate the holidays and end-of-year festivities. It highlights some of the brand’s recognisable elements such as the tiger face, Kenzo Takada signature; and, to celebrate the launch of its new fragrance ‘KENZO world’, many of the pieces draw cues from the new perfume’s bottle. The Holiday jumpers feature golden embossed Ks and lurex detail for women as well as multiple tiger motifs for both men and women. Another print that covers dresses, bombers and accessories is the ‘all over the eye’ pattern.

SCAR L ET & B R OWN The two colours may not sound like a match, but they do create an interesting result, especially when complemented by a third colour such as navy or white. The long skirt is a statement piece for autumn days, it can be worn with sandals, but also looks really good with ankle or biker boots. A long-sleeved solid red top and earth tone accessories are the best pairings for a casual, but stylish, effect. www.womanthismonth.com

BOL D B IK E R The leather jacket is every girl’s cool wardrobe weapon, so how about painting it in bright red? It may not be an easy-to-wear piece, but it is certainly an eye-catching element for bold women. To create a youthful updated look, team it with a cropped checked top and boyfriend jeans. To add some drama, opt for a bucket handbag in a darker red tone and finalise the outfit with a cool pair of black boots. www.womanthismonth.com

High heeled shoes with crystal details, Charles & Keith 16 686-202.

R ED AL ERT Want to be even bolder? Go for red from head to toe. This formula works best with more formal attire and is perfect for special events. To break the intensity of the hue, you can add some light with silver and shiny gem accents, which create a better effect than golden details. The trench-coat is the ultimate addition to the look for the ‘lady in red’ in you! December 2016

A breath of fresh air for the region’s fashion circuit, Frances Stafford’s Black Anaar brand is all about novel ideas that have their roots in heirloom values. From growing up in Alberta, Canada, working with the international art fraternity in Berlin, directing community art initiatives such as the BAB Market and museum projects for the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, to, very recently, launching her own fashion line with eclectic cultural influences, this art historian has come a long way and is raring to go further. So, why the name Black Anaar? Frances says the epics of yore mention Bahrain as the Garden of Paradise famed for its jewelled trees – most probably referring to the ubiquitous pomegranate which grows abundantly here. Pomegranate is ‘anaar’ in ancient languages such as Farsi, Urdu and Hindi. “And ‘black’, because it’s the favoured colour of the nightlife in Berlin and also a rare variety of pomegranate,” she says. Frances was smitten by fashion as a little girl. “It was one of my favourite pastimes. A fun afternoon would be going through my mother’s vintage clothing, noticing the differences in the fabrics, ribbons and cuts. I loved dressing myself. I was the freak at school; but a trendsetter too. I’d wear something weird and then a month later, the style would have caught on!” she says. Her studies of Canadian aborigines and Inuit cultures, combined with her UkrainianEnglish roots further fanned her love for myths attached to clothing, how dress and culture are so entwined and how clothes are symbolic of an idea or expression. While she directed the Little www.womanthismonth.com

Frances Stafford

India project in Manama Souq, the idea for her own fashion label germinated. “I came to a point where I finally realised what I truly wanted to do. Being creative with fashion is my calling,” she says. Fascinated by the souq’s narrow alleys brimming with stories handed down the generations, she dug deep into the history of the island while foraging in the market for its treasure trove of fabrics. “I found tie-dye material sitting on the topmost shelves of a shop, unnoticed. It is thick and industrial, but also stretchy and really worked for something I had in mind,” she says. Much like the fabric she sources, the warp and weft of Frances’ inspiration is found in Bahrain.

“Although Bahrain has over 6,000 years of history, it is this vibrant, young and blossoming place that I immediately fell in love with.” Her designs, many of which show her fondness for layering, have impressed fashionistas in Canada and Berlin. Her pieces are structured from woollen shawls, lissome Indian silk saris, velvets and other traditional materials. She has successfully introduced the flowing ‘chadors’, favoured mostly by older Middle Easterners, to Berlin. “Berlin is a melting pot of cultures where people are very receptive to alternative fashion. The idea of reusing and changing the old into something that is cool and contemporary is welcomed,” she says.

Frances greatly values the local arts and wants to incorporate them into the everyday fashion scene. “For example, the weavers of Bani Jamra are the last family that still does weaving. So once they’re gone, the tradition is lost,” she says. Her plans for the future are to associate with more ecologically responsible, community-driven fashion. Commenting on her online label she says, “Every woman is a Black Anaar woman. It’s like opening your friend’s closet; you will be pulled towards something you like. It’s for women and men too; as many of my designs are unisex. These blurred lines make an interesting departure point for Black Anaar.” g December 2016

Leading the Way Setting an example for women all around the Gulf, Mona Almoayyed added another feather to her cap by making the Forbes Middle East List of Most Influential Arab Women, yet again. aving paved the way for women’s empowerment for decades, managing director of YK Almoayyed & Sons, Mona has been a regular on the Forbes listings. Acknowledging her latest achievement of being number eight on the list this year, she still feels humbled by the whole experience. “For me, it is an honour to be included in the Forbes list,” she says. “I am happy for myself and for women in Bahrain to be exposed to an international and reliable organisation such as Forbes. Although Bahrain is a small country, there are many influential hard-working women.”

24

December 2016

Talking about what this means to her personally, she adds: “This inclusion, for me, is very important. I’ve always worked hard all my life since I finished university. My father really gave us confidence as women; he educated us the same way as our brothers. He always wanted us to work, and my husband is the same. He really believes in women having a career, so even my daughters are all working. So, to me, being recognised in this influential list, it gives me more enthusiasm to work harder and achieve more.” Coming from a family of business people, it was

Mona, left, with her sisters

Meeting with the Crown Prince in 2012, when she was president of the Bahrain Businesswomen’s Society

fairly easy for Mona to get established as a business woman, which she attributes to her father’s forward thinking. “My father really believed in including us in the business,” she explains. “Even in the summer holidays, he used to tell us to come and work in the office because he really didn’t want us to be idle.” Having studied business administration, Mona joined her father’s business in 1974, straight after university, in the accounts department. Although her father was openminded, he always felt girls, in the end, have to get married and raise children. But even after marriage and four babies, Mona worked parttime and went back full-time once her children started school. “I was working very hard; I took work back home and proved to my father that I was as good as the boys,” she says. Her hard work paid off and after two years she moved departments, from accounts to furniture. She travelled all over Europe, managed to improve sales and brought interesting brands such as Ligne Roset and many other famous furniture brands to Bahrain. After about 10 years, she was put in charge of the automobile division. Of her initial experience, she says: “It was difficult at the beginning because customers and employees didn’t like to talk to me – they preferred to talk to my brother. But I’m talking about the ’80s and ’90s. Now I think it’s getting much easier – people are used to women.” Of the challenges she faced, one of the biggest was being a woman in a male-oriented job. “Slowly, I felt that people were getting used to me because I am the type of person that, if you give me a problem, I don’t just talk to you and forget about it; I write it down and I really try to solve it. So the customers always like to come to me with their problems because they feel I can do something.” Managing an organisation of more than 1,000 people and 100 brands, Mona runs a tight ship with professional managers in each department. “We have an executive committee which meets once a month, all the managers report to the www.womanthismonth.com

committee, and we take decisions,” she says. ”We also have an audit committee which is doing a very good job – examining all the risk factors, how to improve things and how to close loopholes for corruption.” The company’s HR committee looks after the employees and follows a performance management system to motivate and improve their positions. The quality committee ensures everything runs efficiently and effectively. “We also do a balance scorecard, which is a way to look at the four pillars of the business – profitability, customer satisfaction, innovation and training and the proper processes to run the business,” she adds. Mona is a big advocate of social work and gets her generous nature from her parents. “I really believe in charity, it comes from my father – he was a huge philanthropist and my mother as well, in her own way,” she says. “I remember when I was little; she used to stitch clothes for the old ladies in the neighbourhood. My grandmother used to do the same. So, all of our family cared about charity work and giving back to society. That’s why, once my father started his business, he used to allocate a small percentage of his profit to charity work, every year – that was the zakat in those days. Of course, now it’s become much bigger – we do the zakat and, on top of it, we do lots of projects for Bahrain because we feel that we have to give back to society. ”I feel we’ve done enough business and now I’d like to divert my attention to social work – try to benefit society and help people and unfortunate countries like Syria and Palestine, and wherever there are horrible stories.” The Yousif and Aysha Almoayyed Charity, named after Mona’s parents, is involved in various charitable projects, helping the government as well as people in need, from Bahrainis requiring medical assistance that cannot afford to be treated to helping students go to university. “One of the charities which I’m really proud of is in Al Areen – we are spending money

to improve the garden in Al Areen. So many families go there, so we did the landscaping and made it beautiful – it’s called the bird park,” she explains. “Then, of course, we’re going to build a kidney dialysis centre for the government. For the blind, we bought five machines, and recently, we bought a machine for BD50,000 for sickle cell [patients] for changing their blood. Instead of staying in hospital overnight, they can do it in two hours with this machine. We gave it to Salmaniya Hospital.” At the end of the year, a percentage of the company’s profit is divided into medical, education and various other projects – big and small, including helping other NGOs (nongovernmental organisations). Mona is also the president of the Al Muntada Society, which was initiated in 2000. “It started off as an NGO for liberal thinking,” she says. “Bahrain needs people who can implement new things, it needs transparency, thinking out of the box, how to improve the country, so that’s how we started this society. Then in 2011, after the problems in Bahrain, we felt that Al Muntada was very important to bring people together.” With her term coming to an end soon, she has further plans to involve the younger generation with various programmes and activities. Having been the chairman of the Migrant Workers Protection Society for three terms, Mona managed to bring in donations from various organisations, and is still active in helping to improve the living conditions in the labour camps. With future plans of expansion in the Gulf, and personal goals of travelling the world with her husband and spending time with her grandchildren, Mona’s most important advice to women is to not give up, be consistent in their work and strike a balance between work and personal life. With her father being her greatest role model, along with the rest of her family, Mona is a true inspiration to other women dedicated to achieving their dreams. December 2016

Enriching Family Ties Nada Kazim, current charity committee vice president of the Aisha Yateem Family Counselling Centre, tells Behnaz Sanjana how it helps ill-treated women to resume living with dignity.

U

nder the aegis of the Bahrain Young Ladies Association, the Aisha Yateem Family Counselling Centre was started in March 2007 with the primary aim of providing protection to families, especially women, and offering ways to resolve conflicts. “The Aisha Yateem Family Counselling Centre guides women in social, psychological and legal spheres to better deal with, and overcome, their personal problems,” says Nada. “We have a qualified team of counsellors, psychologists and lawyers who specialise in women’s and familial issues, and are dedicated to helping anyone in need of practical advice. We also work closely with the Ministry of Social Affairs and hospitals in Bahrain.” She goes on to explain that the centre was the first of its kind in the Kingdom and has become a great source of support for abused Bahraini and expat women. It has seen 78 new cases in 2016 besides the 783 ongoing ones it already handles. The centre provides family counselling for women as well as one-on-one counselling for other adult family members. “This helps them to avoid deeper problems in their relationships at home and, if they are already in a fix, we help them come out of it,” she says. The social guidance, psychological and legal counselling units help individuals to find their own suitable solutions to overcome their problems. “We provide women with all the options that are available. We lay out the pros and cons of their actions and empower them to take their own decisions. They have to select their path ahead; we can only guide them to make the correct choice,” Nada says. Sometimes, in dire circumstances, when it is inevitable for a woman to seek legal recourse, the centre legally represents her at court and also bears the cost for it. “We also have a toll-free hotline, where women can call and receive immediate counselling,” says Nada. The centre conducts social, psychological and legal awareness programmes for people

26

December 2016

Nada Kazim from all walks of life. “We hold seminars to inform women about their rights and responsibilities, as well as computer courses for housewives and exercise programmes like yoga, aerobics and self-defence to teach them how to reduce stress and cope with daily issues effectively. Our own volunteers and counsellors receive regular training to deal with and help distressed individuals. ” The centre also enables young people who are thinking of tying the knot to make informed choices and be well aware of the challenges that married life brings. “This readies them for what to expect and how to come out of difficult situations, to prevent scenarios like divorce and separation,” she says. Nada explains that the charity’s 20-strong committee, which includes members of the Yateem family, is responsible for raising funds to keep the centre running and providing essential services to those in a social quagmire. Talks are underway to start

a shelter for women who need a temporary place to live, away from home. The committee annually holds many fundraising activities and Nada says: “There is a major event we are organising, which is the Al Nahda charity boutique. It is a sale of used as well as new clothes and other products that have been donated from all over Bahrain, starting on November 19 for 10 days in Gudaibiya. The entire committee and external volunteers are busy sorting and pricing the items for sale. All proceeds go towards the running costs of the centre.” Funds are also raised through a gala annual exhibition held at the Aisha Yateem Centre’s premises, where stalls are rented out to interested sellers. “It is a big event which raises money for helping women in need of our help and support,” says Nada. The committee also raises funds through monthly brunches for ladies, where women can get together for a good cause. g www.womanthismonth.com

It’s a Bling Thing This month sees the return of Jewellery Arabia, the Kingdom’s ultimate expo for all things sparkly and special.

F

rom high jewellery and stunning timepieces from the likes of Panerie and Gucci on the Asia Jewellers stand to diamonds aplenty at Kooheji Jewellers, precious metals at Malabar Gold and Diamonds and an array of precious and costume pieces from A La Mode, it’s the time and place to lay down some serious cash, but also the ideal opportunity to bag a bargain, if you know what you’re looking for. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has these tips to learn about the 4Cs of diamond quality. Carat – Diamonds are weighed in metric carats. For reference, a small paper clip weighs about two carats. Clarity – Nearly all diamonds contain unique internal characteristics called inclusions and external characteristics called blemishes. Many clarity characteristics are too tiny to be seen by anyone other than a trained gemologist using magnification. The GIA Clarity Scale contains 11 grades ranging from Flawless to Included. Colour – Truly colourless diamonds are very rare and highly valued. The GIA Colour Scale runs from colourless to light yellow/brown. The distinctions can be quite subtle and only visible to the trained eye. Cut – Cut refers to how a diamond’s complex proportions and angles relate to light. A number of factors influence a diamond’s cut grade, including its overall face-up appearance, design and craftsmanship.

Going for Gold There are various things to remember if you’re thinking of purchasing gold. Business-standard.com has this advice: Understand that there are variations in gold that affect its purity, quality and price – the main factors to consider include purity, gram weight and design. Purity – When it comes to purity, most gold has markings inside that indicate its caratage. Pure gold is too soft to use as jewellery. Accordingly, it is alloyed with a mixture of metals like silver, copper, nickel and zinc to give it strength and durability. The most common ‘Carat’ options are 18, 22 and 24. Price – This is determined by purity, which alloy the gold is combined with and the amount of skill and labour in the piece. Colour – Gold has many variations including yellow, white and rose gold. Combining pure gold with other metals creates a new and diverse colour palette. Identification – In many countries, local law requires that every item of gold jewellery bears a clear stamp indicating its caratage.

F

or more than a century Buccellati has been creating Italian-designed jewellery which preserved the brand’s stylistic identity established by reviving age-old goldsmithing traditions at the top end of the jewellery market. Founder Mario Buccellati was apprenticed with the famous jewellers and goldsmiths Beltrami & Besnati and was fascinated by the metals and stones and how the craftsmen used them. In 1919, he opened his first jewellery store in Milan and revived the use of ancient tools and traditions for his creations. He interpreted Renaissance styles and combined them with his interest and attraction for the Venetian art. Age-old engraving and chiselling techniques were incorporated into a mix of precious stones and metals for an unusual yet extraordinary combination. He quickly became one of Italy’s highly respected jewellers and goldsmiths, so much

so that the famous “literary dandy” and client Gabriele d’Annunzio coined for him the name “The Prince of Goldsmiths”. Soon he started to work for various royal ramilies of Italy, Spain and Egypt, and supplied ornamental objects to The Pope and the great cardinals of Rome. By 1925 an entrepreneurial streak saw him opening stores in Rome and Florence and by 1951, he had expanded to America. When Mario Buccellati passed away, in 1965, four out of his five sons took over the family business, and among them Gianmaria was passionate in learning meticulous craftsmanship. He soon took over the management of the workshops and the creative side of the company conceiving and designing every piece coming out of his ateliers. He worked with his brother, Luca who took over the business side, sharing with him the

vision of turning Buccellati into a worldwide jewellery powerhouse. In the following years the company set up shop in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Paris, becoming the first Italian brand to have a store on the Place Vendôme. Further expansion followed with Gianmaria’s son, Andrea, working alongside him. Having inherited his father’s artistic talents Andrea supervises the jewellery creation process and, since 2013, he has been the group’s president and creative director. Today, Andrea is supported by his daughter Lucrezia who offers new inspirations and trends. Buccellati has also branched out into silver jewellery and watches, all of which enjoy the same high quality craftsmanship that the brand is known for. Call 17 535-344.

The American model attended the God’s Love We Deliver Golden Heart Awards wearing Michael Kors and showcasing her youthful beauty. Use Fernanda's tips to steal her style. Lined Eyes They say eyes are the windows to the soul, which means when someone looks into your eyes they can see who you really are. One more reason to decorate and embellish them to make a good impression. I believe, no matter what shape or eye colour you have, the eyes are the most important area to be highlighted when applying make-up. In this case a black kohl pencil does all the work. Contour the upper and lower lids, near the lashes, smudge a little and you’re good to go!

Thick Fringes There are many types of bangs: blunt, asymmetrical, parted, choppy and more. This style is not for everyone but if you have a big forehead, full and straight tresses, it will work wonders. However, if you don’t, you’ll want to find the right fringe style or give up on the idea. In my opinion, if, like me, you have curly hair, you shouldn’t go for bangs. But it is a trend for spring and summer 2017, so, depending on your curls, you may want to go for it! Vanessa’s hair is perfect for bangs, all types. Here she embraced the ’70s with a rounded full fringe and very long mane.

Nude Lips What is the best way to finalise a minimal make-up? Rosy-nude lipstick. No lip pencil, no complicated mixture, just a simple smooth and moist lipstick. Carry it with you to reapply when necessary. Usually, most moisturising lipsticks are made with vitamin E, glycerine and aloe vera and don’t have long-lasting formulas.

Less Is More Another important tip is to always opt for less, no matter the occasion. Of course, your everyday make-up is going to be different from what you wear for a special evening, but follow your instinct when you look in the mirror if you think you’ve overdone it. Be gentle with the amount of foundation, you don’t want a cakey effect. To avoid that, pick the right colour for your skin and test the texture. Each skin responds differently to each product. Give it a try and pay attention if it is well absorbed, easy to apply and if it feels comfortable on your complexion. Contouring Effect It is incredible how make-up can change features and give a whole new aspect to your skin. Many beauty tutorials show contouring techniques that are impressive and quite complicated. Honestly, not feasible for everyday make-up if you have to leave the house and you barely have time for breakfast! But a quick way to transform your everyday make-up is to get an angled brush and apply a little bit of bronzer right under your cheekbone, then blend with blush applied right on top of your cheekbone. The simple touch will lift your cheekbones and give a slimmer effect. www.womanthismonth.com

LUXURY UNLIMITED T

Offering exclusive treatments in plush surroundings, Liz O’Reilly finds this new venue is the ultimate in pampering.

here’s something very lovely about going to the spa when everyone else is working; it almost feels like playing hooky, especially when the spa in question is brand new and super luxe. When I was invited to try out the services at Hydro Spa & Salon in Riffa, I jumped at the chance having heard about the place from various satisfied pals. I was greeted on arrival by the friendly staff and, after filling out various reassuring health forms, was whisked off by Balinese therapist Kadek for a Balinese massage. The therapies area is all dimmed lights and gentle quiet music, while the treatment rooms themselves are huge, easily accommodating a massage bed as well as a shower and in-room Jacuzzi, and decorated in luxurious relaxing shades with thick fluffy towels and burning candles. Kadek is that rare thing, a therapist who actually listens when you ask for medium rather than strong pressure and, unusually, she also checked whether I was comfortable with the air-conditioning and the music before administering a deeply relaxing massage which addressed my muscle aches without making me feel battered, as has been the case with the last few massages I’ve tried. Next I was taken to another large treatment room, in a different area of the spa, for the Hydra Facial which uses patented technology employing a suctiontype tool to gently cleanse and exfoliate before delivering potent anti-ageing botanical ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, horse chestnut seed extract, red algae www.womanthismonth.com

extract, copper zinc and magnesium peptides. I must admit, I initially found it mildly uncomfortable but I must’ve quickly got used to it, since I was soon gently snoring under therapist Hiedi’s gentle ministrations. The Hydra Facial is advertised as non-invasive and non-irritating but, on my sensitive skin, I did experience some redness and, what appeared to be, very mild bruising. However, without a doubt, my skin also looked plumped and hydrated and felt incredibly soft afterwards. Four treatments two weeks apart are recommended followed by nourishing skin preparations to use at home. Having seen the results after just one session, I

would be very tempted. My final treatment was hair restructuring. Since I don’t have any specific problems with my locks, stylist Samera asked what I would like to improve and, after a weekend in the water, I was keen

to restore some shine. She used a deeply nourishing hair mask activated by 15 minutes under a steam treatment and designed to penetrate deeply to soften my hair and leave it super shiny. A quick blow dry later and I couldn’t have been happier with the results, so much so that two friends actually commented on how glossy I looked that evening and three washes later I am still reaping the benefits. Hydro Spa & Salon offers a whole range of treatments, from Elemis and Dr Dennis Gross facials to nail and hair options, a signature sea salt hammam and a selection of massages. And with sumptuous surroundings backed up by very reasonable prices it’s an affordable weekday treat that’s luxurious enough for a girly weekend spa day. Call 17 781-500. December 2016

GET THE MANE OF YOUR DREAMS If you’ve always wished for long, thick hair but have never managed to achieve it, a great way to play magic with your locks is to opt for extensions.

M

ost women have dreamt of glamorous long hair, but not all are graced with it naturally. An easy way to get the look you’ve always wanted and bring out your inner hottie is to go for extensions. A lot of women imagine themselves with longer, thicker hair – that’s why hair extensions are so popular, and not just in Hollywood. Women all over the world realise that it’s possible to take their current look, give it a lift and have any

style they desire, well at least for a few months. However, there are some vital things one needs to know before deciding on hair extensions. Joz Salon & Spa brings you the facts about this popular trend and gives tips on how to wear it. l Extensions don’t just add length. You can choose to add volume instead of or in addition to length, which works perfectly for fine, limp or thinning hair.

l Turn that bob into a mane! If your existing hair is as little as three-inches long, you can get extensions, although the extent of your transformation may be limited if your hair is very short. l Extensions can be braided in, glued in, woven in, or, if you only need a follicular boost for a special event, clipped in. l You can also add highlights or colour. With shades ranging from mild to wild, you can add vibrant hues to your hair with the use of extensions. l The process isn't painful, so it shouldn't hurt at all. What to Look For A hairstyle can make or break your look. Hence, there are some important questions to ask when selecting extensions: l What are the extensions made from – are they synthetic or 100-per-cent natural human hair? (Human hair is more expensive than synthetic counterparts.) l How will the extensions be applied and removed? l Can you choose from a variety

of weights? “You can play with the colour or length and fill in spots where it’s needed more than others – it's a more accurate way to get the desired look,” says a salon stylist. Powered with the right information, you can be on your way to dreamy locks in no time. Call 17 369-133, 16 031-120 or 17 756-449. www.womanthismonth.com

STUB IT Out!

The reasons people start puffing on tobacco may be different, but the consequences of the habit are all the same. Behnaz Sanjana attempts to clear the smoke.

T

he sultry actress on screen leans forward while a handsome man lights the cigarette she holds in her mouth. Their eyes meet as they exchange smouldering looks; all is well and glamorous in fantasy land. Cut to the real world, and the story takes a different turn. Every puff that the stunning lady inhales contains more than 4,000 chemicals (think carbon monoxide, nitrosamines, vinyl chloride, hydrogen cyanide and many other names you wouldn’t normally want anywhere near you), besides the deadly drug nicotine. Each subsequent cigarette will inhibit her lung function, damage her blood vessels and is likely to cause her an array of health problems sooner or later. The act of smoking has become socially accepted the world over and the compulsion of its addiction glazes thickly over the knowledge of the extent of havoc it can wreak in one’s body. General practitioner Dr Babu Ramachandran heads American Mission Hospital’s anti-smoking clinics in the hope of raising awareness of the ills of the habit and helping people overcome it. Dr Babu has undergone specialised training in respiratory medicine and was the senior research fellow at a centre in India conducting a study on smoking cessation. He says: “During my interaction with nearly 3,000 smokers, I observed that a good majority wished they had not started smoking and many found it difficult to quit the habit. This set me on track to start the anti-smoking clinic in Bahrain with the support of the American Mission Hospital.” In addition to the common pitfalls of smoking such as respiratory disorders and cancer, which even teenagers are aware of, he lists a range of other possible consequences. “Besides throat cancer, lung cancer and mouth cancer, smoking leads to depression and causes miscarriages in pregnant women,” he says. He adds that the use of tobacco is responsible for around 45 per cent of all heart-related deaths globally. Not an insignificant number. “These are just a few of the many dangers of smoking. Moreover, the harmful impact of passive smoking on non-smokers is also gaining greater importance today.” Second-hand smoke can increase the risk of cancer in non-smokers by a quarter, and has resulted in deaths due to lung cancer, heart and lung disease and stroke in the UK, according to www.cancerresearch.org. Studies show second-hand smoke particularly affects children exposed to it, leading to a higher risk of respiratory infections, asthma, bacterial meningitis and cot death. So when you light up, you are also threatening the wellbeing of those around you. While most of this is common knowledge, why do people find it difficult to quit smoking? The culprit is the nicotine. Once inhaled, it reaches the brain in a matter of seconds, and chemically alters the cerebral matter to make the smoker feel alert, energetic and relaxed. This elevation in mood and heart rate lasts for around 30 minutes and, as the effect of the nicotine wanes, the brain signals the smoker to light up again. Once the body adjusts to a steady dose of nicotine, the feel-good factor wears off faster over time, causing the smoker to increase the number of cigarettes in a day to achieve the same level of satisfaction.

Just

like other

medical conditions,

smoking is best addressed as

a condition to be treated. Consult a physician who can guide you. The support of family and friends will help you quit the habit.

Dr Babu Ramachandran

But that’s not to say a heavy smoker is at the point of no return. A heavy dose of willpower, motivation and willingness to go through the dreaded withdrawal symptoms can help you kick the habit. “To quit smoking the most vital factor is the will to give up. The best way is to go ‘cold turkey’, which means that you give it up in one go and don’t try the process of a slow reduction in the number of cigarettes smoked per day,” says Dr Babu. He continues: “Yes, there

www.womanthismonth.com

are effects which manifest as irritability, sleep disturbances, lack of concentration and changes in appetite. These may last for four to six weeks, but the long-term benefits of stopping smoking far outweigh the temporary unease. “However, if that is not possible there are other aids such as the nicotine patch, nicotine gums and some medicines as well. Just like other medical conditions, smoking is best addressed as a condition to be treated. Consult a physician who can guide you. The support of family and friends will help you quit the habit,” says the doctor. For those who hit the shisha bars at the end of the day, you’re in the running for ugly health hazards too. Shisha smoke may be more aromatic than that of cigarettes, but has the same toxic tobacco. It’s believed that with one puff of shisha you inhale the same amount of smoke as you’d get from smoking a whole cigarette. On e-cigarettes, Dr Babu comments that their use is still controversial and he doesn’t advocate the use of them. A widely-believed worry for those trying to quit smoking is the prospect of weight gain. Dr Babu explains: “This can be attributed to increased food intake, solely because food begins to taste better!” Another side effect of smoking is that it affects the taste buds as well as yellowing teeth and nails. In light of all the issues smoking can cause in the body and the healthy years potentially lost due to this habit, Dr Babu puts it simply: “If you are a smoker, stop today. If you are not one, don't start!”

THE GIFT OF HEALTH T

If you’re scouting around for a meaningful gift or way to give back to the community, this one shows just how much you care.

he Al Hilal Hospital and Medical Centers have been conducting a Breast Cancer Health Awareness Campaign for the full month of October and it is currently ongoing. As a unique social initiative, the medical conglomerate has launched a unique ‘Breast Cancer Checkup Gift Voucher’ as part of the campaign conducted every year. These vouchers, which are worth BD75, are on offer at a special price of just BD25. They make the most thoughtful gift for any woman who should be screened for breast cancer and are valid up to March 2017. The voucher can also be a practical way to do your bit for the disadvantaged. If you are looking for a meaningful way to help the needy, a voucher can be given away as charity to underprivileged women registered with numerous social organisations around the Kingdom. Al Hilal has collaborated with non-profit groups such as the Royal Charity Organisation, Bahrain Cancer Society, Cancer

Care Group and other women’s associations and support groups to refer women who need a checkup to the hospital. Many corporate houses have come forward in support for such women by purchasing gift vouchers and distributing them amongst those who require annual screening but may not be able to afford it. It is important that women of all ages understand the importance of detecting and

treating breast cancer early. Treatment while the tumour is still small and confined to an area of breast tissue provides the best chance of survival and an improved quality of life. itamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin, has great health benefits. Dr Rashmi Dhanuka, general practitioner at Middle East Medical Center – Hidd, explains in detail. Cheese, butter, margarine, fortified cereals, milk and fish are some of the food sources of Vitamin D. “Adequate vitamin D intake is important for the regulation of calcium and phosphorus absorption, maintenance of healthy bones and teeth and protection against multiple diseases and conditions such as cancer, type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis,” says Dr Dhanuka. It has various roles in the body, helping to: l Support the immune system, brain and nervous system. l Regulate insulin levels and aid diabetes management. l Support lung function and cardiovascular health. Vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of depression by 50 per cent, breast cancer by 83 per cent, heart attacks by 30 per cent, fracture by 50 per cent and diabetes by 66 per cent.

In spite of the name, vitamin D is considered a pro-hormone and not actually a vitamin because the body is capable of producing its own vitamin D through sunlight on the skin, while vitamins are nutrients that cannot be synthesised by the body and must be acquired through the diet or supplements. It is estimated that sensible sun exposure on bare skin for five-10 minutes, two to three times per week allows the body to produce sufficient vitamin D, but it has a half-life of only two weeks, meaning that stores can run low, especially in winter. Recent studies have suggested that up to 50 per cent of adults and children worldwide are vitamin D deficient. Symptoms of low vitamin D include generalised myalgia (muscle pain), sleepiness, fatigue and hair loss. After checking the level in blood, a patient is advised on sun exposure, oral tablets or injections depending on deficiency. Call 17 464-848 for consultation and more information. December 2016

SHORT AND SOPHISTICATED E

This renowned hotel’s Khaleeji restaurant gives food connoisseurs yet another reason to dine at the venue, this time in the middle of the day, says Puja Tiwari.

very once in a while, I love shrugging off the shackles of the deskbound sandwich or salad and indulging in a proper meal to change things up a notch. Business lunches are amazing because they let you eat at your favourite restaurants at a fraction of the regular price. Many of them feature a three-course meal consisting of a starter, a main course and dessert for a fixed amount. But, as much as I love the concept, the challenge lies in finding a place that serves the meal within the short timeframe of a corporate lunch break. This is one great aspect of Furn Bistro and Bakery’s newly launched promotion – you will eat in 30 minutes or less! It gives patrons a choice between typical Khaleeji food, which is the house speciality, and a couple of well-loved alternatives such as steak and tiramisu. The décor is airy and spacious, with earthy tones and bright light fixtures, and adjoining the restaurant is an artisan bakery with a varied selection of cakes, breads and pastries. Not long after I placed my order, the first course was on the table. It was a beautifully presented hummous platter with four variations – chickpeas, sundried tomato, beyirouti with coriander and parsley, and the regular version. The pastel colours of each made it look like a summery palette. Accompanying it was an assortment of freshly baked bread. The serving is generous for one person but I tucked in and did it justice. Next to the table were sirloin steak and vegetable couscous. The juicy steak was laid on a bed of iceberg lettuce, drizzled in a creamy blue cheese sauce and came atop a rustic wooden board. A glaze was brought in a separate bowl. With all the different colours and textures, the presentation was striking. The well-marbled steak was cooked to a tender medium-rare and the sauce was a robust accompaniment to it. The couscous came in a sleek iron pot with vegetables dunked in gravy on the side. Fluffy and savoury, this is the perfect light option for the health-conscious. For dessert we had a towering tiramisu, a rich and exquisite dessert which left an indelible impression on my taste buds. The pudding-like dish combined the tenacious flavour of cocoa and coffee with creamy mascarpone cheese and ladyfinger sponge in magnificent harmony. Berries and slivers of

60

December 2016

almonds laced the side of the iron pan it was brought in. Again, the presentation deserves a notable mention. The master of the kitchen, chef Manaf Al Ghanim, was kind enough to explain the concept of the business lunch telling us that the restaurant wants to give customers a classy experience to help them forget the monotony of the daily grind. The food served is easy on the stomach and service is quick. Furn is located at the Westin Bahrain City Centre. The offer runs from Sunday-Thursday from noon-4pm. A two-course meal costs BD7.5++ and three course is BD9.5++. Call 17 171-441.

A TASTE OF LUXURY Puja Tiwari finds this stylish café serves delicious fare combining the opulence of fashion with gourmet flavours.

W

hen the glamorous Cavalli Caffe opened at Al Aali Shopping Complex earlier this year, my foodie brain made a mental note to visit the branch on a day I felt particularly flush with my wallet. The café is a culinary venture that sports a trendy setting and serves gourmet Italian dishes. It is the brainchild of notable fashion mogul Roberto Cavalli. One fine day a friend and I decided to meet and start our day with breakfast at the eatery. With clear blue skies and a light breeze in the air, we chose to sit on the outdoor patio. The plush seating is swathed with the iconic bold zebra and giraffe prints synonymous with Cavalli. The inside of the restaurant has a glittering façade, with outlandish yet sophisticated elements making for some serious eye candy. The waiter brought us the menu and surprise struck. Given all the pomp and splendour associated with the brand, the prices are fairly reasonable. After some discussion with restaurant manager, we placed our order. Two dreamy cups of French coffee and strawberry coconut mojito heralded the beginning of the feast. The rich-tasting coffee is an Italian take on the classic brew with gianduja, layered in ombre shades of brown with the rim lined in chocolate specked with almond slivers. The mojito was topped with edible flowers and mint dipped in silver glitter, each sip reminding me of a beach and the azure sea of the Caribbean. Akin to the designer’s vibrant creations, the

62

December 2016

food is a sight to behold. In shades of blue and pink were the Gianduja Crepes, stuffed with a hazelnut spread and a side of banana compote and sweet cream. The colours reminded me of cotton candy and I had a quick flashback to my childhood. The texture was smooth and the cream went well with the sweet delight. Next up was a croissant basket filled with delicious fluffy, warm, freshly baked pastries so good I could have eaten just these and left happy. However, we moved on. You can literally taste the rainbow when you order the vanilla chia pudding layered with mango, blueberry, strawberry and avocado compote. A side of crunchy homemade granola accompanies it. This is the kind of dish that makes Instagram users famous. I don’t even remember the last time I saw food that looks this stunning and the tart blueberry layer was perfectly balanced by the buttery avocado. Next was the moist and delicate Giraffe Swiss Roll with cream cheese and cherry jam wrapped in a peachy yogurt mousse. Each piece is an art, and the detailing on the roll looked like the animal’s neck. The Black Forest Pancakes, as the name sounds, were irresistible with homemade ricotta layered with dark cherry, whipped cheese and cream cheese foam. Bursting at the seams with all the opulent food, I decided I must come back another time for lunch or dinner. Cavalli Caffe is the perfect spot for a snack or a meal with friends. And the value for money is too good to be true! Call 77 788-877. www.womanthismonth.com

CHEF’S SPECIAL The latest venue to open in Amwaj is helmed by an industry veteran who knows his way around the kitchen.

TURKEY LIVER PARFAIT WITH CARAMELISED ONION AND CRANBERRY SAUCE

W

ith almost 20 years’ experience under his toque, executive chef Ramzi Waheed Jalal worked across the region before bringing his talents to the Ramada Hotel & Suites Amwaj Islands. Having trained with Marriott in his native Jordan, he moved to Saudi Arabia, taking on the role of head chef in the household of Prince Abed Al-Elah bin Abed Al-Aziz Al Saud. After three years running the royal kitchens, he decided to make the move to hotels, heading for a stint at the Riyadh InterContinental before moving back to Jordan where he held positions in a number of five-star properties. He joined Ramada Amwaj in October last year on the pre-opening team and is responsible for all kitchen operations in the new property, which boasts 162 rooms and suites as well as three restaurants (Citrus, Flavours of Morocco, Lounge), banqueting facilities and outside catering. Here he shares a favourite festive recipe for you to try at home.

Chef Ramzi Waheed Jalal www.womanthismonth.com

Ingredients: - 300g butter, softened - olive oil - 2 shallots, peeled and finely chopped - 2 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped - 400g turkey liver, trimmed - fresh sage - 1 small glass raspberry vinegar - sea salt - freshly ground black pepper - 1 pinch ground nutmeg - 1 loaf French or ciabatta bread - 1 punnet salad cress Method: Preheat the oven to 110ºC. Put half the butter in an ovenproof saucepan and place in the oven to slowly melt until it’s separated, approximately 10 minutes. Strain the yellow clarified butter into a bowl and set aside to cool. Discard the remaining milky-coloured butter. Heat a little olive oil in a frying pan and fry the shallots and garlic for 10 minutes, until soft and tender, then remove to a plate. Wipe the pan clean, turn up the heat and throw

in the livers and most of the sage. Cook the livers for a couple of minutes on each side, until lightly coloured but still a little pink in the middle – overcooking will spoil the texture. Pour in the raspberry vinegar. Simmer for a minute, then take the livers off the heat and tip them into a food processor with the cooked shallots and garlic. Blitz until you have a smooth purée. Add the rest of the softened butter and continue to blitz, then season well and add the nutmeg. Transfer the mixture to a serving bowl. Sprinkle the remaining sage leaves over the parfait, then spoon over the clarified butter. Leave to set in the fridge for one hour. If the butter seal isn’t disturbed it should last up to two weeks. When you are ready to serve, slice up some bread and griddle small toasts. Pile them onto a board next to your parfait with a pile of snipped cress on the side and dig in. CARAMELISED ONION Ingredients: - 2 tbsp olive oil

- 1 tbsp butter - 2 large red onions, thinly sliced - 1/4 cup white sugar - 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar - salt to taste Method: Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir onions and sugar in hot oil until onions start to caramelise, about 15 minutes. Stir balsamic vinegar into onion mixture and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until liquid is evaporated, 15 to 20 minutes more. Season with salt. CRANBERRY SAUCE Ingredients: - 1 1/2 cups cranberries - 1 cup white sugar - 1 cup orange juice Method: In a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat, dissolve the sugar in the orange juice. Stir in the cranberries and cook until the cranberries start to pop, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and place sauce in a bowl. Cranberry sauce will thicken as it cools. December 2016

Creative Gifting

It’s the time of the year when we get the green light to pamper our little ones, giving them all the material things they want. Fernanda Langhammer asks what about also gifting your child a more personalised present?

M

y daughter loves Christmas; it is when we try to get the family together and create nice memories. But she also enjoys planning the gifts she will get in advance. She researches toys online, makes lists, changes her mind, talks to her friends; it is a whole area preparation

that starts in the middle of the year. However, together with the toy, or whatever she chooses, we try to give a personal little thing with a meaningful message. I’m going to share a few ideas with you. I hope you enjoy making them for your kids!

COUPON BOOKLET This is a fun idea that can be superpersonalised following your family traditions and routine. You can print or handwrite things

such as: go to the theatre, play a board game, ride a bike, cook together, choose a favourite restaurant for dinner, watch the sunset and many other ideas. Your child can retrieve

them when they like (and when it is possible, of course). For the very little ones you can just print pictures, while for the big ones you add in riddles or make it as complex as you want.

THE BOOK OF HAPPINESS You can buy a nice notepad, or just get one that you have at home, and decorate its cover with family pictures and kids’

drawings, wrap it and put it under the Christmas tree. This is supposed to be a weekly journal where, at the end of each week, you sit with your child and write the

things that made you happy during that week. By the end of the year, you will have a collection of beautiful memories to recall which can be read during difficult moments.

CREATE A STORY This is an idea that is very good for when children are small. Again you need a notepad and a creative child (and who doesn’t have one?). This idea, in particular, is my husband’s,

so I have to give him the credit. Our daughter was around four to six years old and loved to draw, so he used to sit with her and write her ideas for a story. On top of the page he would write two or three lines and she would colour a

picture, then to the next page, a few more lines and a drawing. This went on for a long period and now we have a ‘book’ made by dad and daughter as a sweet memory, even though the story doesn’t really connect.

COOL GIFTS FOR ANY TIME The best thing is that you actually don’t need a special occasion to gift your child one of the ideas above. You may not celebrate Christmas or find that another special

moment suits you better; it doesn’t really matter if you do it with all your heart. You just have to be committed and disciplined to keep filling the pages or not always say that it’s not a good time to use the voucher.

If you do prepare one of these special gifts, remember that your child may show excitement in the beginning but, during the course of the year, you have to be the one to motivate him/her to use it.

PARENTING | advice

Need to Know

Q

Dr Jinan Harith Darwish is a paediatric allergy specialist and clinical immunology fellow at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center. Each month she answers your parenting questions.

My seven-year-old daughter keeps getting nosebleeds. They come on out of nowhere and, though sometimes they stop quickly, often the bleeding seems to go on for a long time. Friends have suggested holding her head back, but this just makes her sick. Others say she needs surgery. Overall, I’m worried for her as she finds these incidents frightening. She is otherwise fine and healthy. What could be causing these bleeds and what should I do about it?

A

Epistaxis is common in children. Nonetheless, frequent minor nosebleeds can be both bothersome and alarming for parents and children. Common causes can include uncontrolled allergies; dry, irritated mucous membranes in her nose; sinus infections; trauma and frequent nose picking. Much more rarely, bleeding disorders or high blood pressure could cause frequent nosebleeds. If dry air is the reason, in addition to a humidifier, it may help to use a saline moisturising nose spray and/or a nasal gel or Vaseline on a regular basis to keep your daughter’s nasal passages from getting dry and irritated. While treating allergies should help, do keep in mind that a bloody nose can be an uncommon side effect of using nasal steroids. And, even if your child denies picking his/her nose, keeping their nails cut short might be helpful if they are having regular nosebleeds – just in case. For more significant or recurrent epistaxis other techniques might include vasoconstrictor nose drops, cautery with silver nitrate, topical sealants or glue, nasal packing or balloon catheters.

My teenager seems tired all the time. He has a pretty healthy diet, though I’m sure he does manage to fill up on junk food when he’s out of the house. Unfortunately, despite encouragement, he’s not very active and spends a lot of time on his computer which I’ve told him is not good for him. At the weekends, he will be online gaming until the early

hours and then we don’t see him till the next afternoon and he spends all his time slouching around. If lifestyle is the problem, I plan to show him your answer.

A

Both The Australian guidelines and US Department of Health and Human Services recommend children aged five to 18 years have at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily. For many adolescents, this physical activity doesn’t just happen – it needs to be planned. It is key to persuade your son to partake in physical activities that are enjoyable, suitable for his age, and that offer diversity with at least three days per week of aerobic vigorous-intensity physical activity, muscle-strengthening physical activity on at least three days of the week and bone-strengthening physical activity on at least three days of the week. Moderate activities in general should make him ‘huff and puff’ a little bit. These could include brisk walking, bike riding, swimming

laps of a pool and jogging. Even helping out with some of the more active chores inside and outside your home can be good for both of you. Vigorous activities increase your teenager’s heart rate and make him ‘huff and puff’ even more. This can happen in any game with lots of running – for example, football, tennis, squash or basketball. According to Australian government guidelines: l children aged five to 12 years should spend no more than two hours a day using electronic media for entertainment (computer games, internet, TV), especially during daylight hours. l children aged 12-18 years should spend no more than two hours a day using electronic media, unless it’s for educational purposes. Holiday Fun

PARENTING| tech kids

There are plenty of websites with amusing Christmas activities to do with your little one. We selected a few of them to kick start those festive feelings.

I

t’s that time of the year again! Breathe in the scent of gingerbread cookies, decorate the Christmas tree, hang the stockings, listen to Christmas carols and embrace the whole magic that December 25th brings us. To put your child in the mood, enjoy some of the moments you have together to play online games such as tracking Santa’s activities, making fun videos, writing letters and a lot more. Just remember, some of the websites are only activated in December.

jibjab.com

If you like creating fun videos and e-cards to send to the whole family, this is the website for you. You can add the face of your loved ones to working and dancing elves or reindeer and give the whole family a good laugh. There is a fee, but you can use it the whole year. Besides holiday themes they also have birthday, Thanksgiving, video music and more. Kids love to watch themselves and siblings dancing around in funny clothes, it is certainly very entertaining.

noradsanta.org

This is a Santa tracker. Every year during the month of December, NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) activates this website for games, videos and music. On Christmas Eve, they record Santa’s journey around the globe, the tracking system shows Santa visiting different countries and landmarks. It’s a special action from the military organisation to get little ones excited about Santa’s arrival in town.

reindeer.com

Certainly a very different website to tune in, this page is a live feed of Santa’s reindeers. The kids can accompany the everyday life of the animals with regular appearances from Santa, when he comes to visit, feed his helpers and check his mail. There is also a scrolling ‘nice list’ that appears on the video to which you can add your child’s name. Real animals and snow to excite the little desert islanders.

www.womanthismonth.com

whychristmas.com

A website to understand Christmas customs and the story, it also has a section with fun activities. The ‘Christmas around the world’ part is especially interesting, it shows a list of countries and when you select one of them, you learn how they celebrate Christmas according to their own traditions. Very good if your kid is doing research about the subject for a school project.

portablenorthpole.com

Here you’ll find videos from Santa and his helpers with free messages from Father Christmas. There is also an option to personalise the message before showing it to your child. If you want to explore even more, there is a paid premium package that gives you access to other features. In Santa’s Village you find activities, stories, quizzes and a world of magical creatures. PARENTING| issues

Become a Spank-free Zone Lamar Kanafani, the island’s first, and so far only, licensed marriage and family therapist, writes for WTM on the issues that concern mums.

I

n last month’s article, I wrote that spanking isn’t an effective parenting technique in that it only produces negative outcomes, like teaching children that physical aggression is the way to express emotions and solve problems. It also builds resentment, distrust and insecurity in the parent-child relationship, and fails to teach effective communication skills, internal controls and self-discipline. If you find yourself resorting to spanking whenever you have to discipline (teach/ guide/mould) your kids, chances are you get angry often and express your emotions through yelling, threatening, punishing, emotionally withdrawing, silent treatment and other forms of power and control over your child. So, simply giving you a list of the alternatives to spanking won’t make much of a difference. You need to first ask yourself why this happens. Is it truly your child that is causing this reaction in you, or is it about you? Studies have shown these techniques are just as harmful as spanking. So, for the purpose of this article, spanking and verbal aggression fall under the same category. It isn’t easy to look inwards and reflect on what might be causing our internal upset, whether it is in the moment or generally. Many times, we skip over and disregard the real (primary) emotions that lie beneath the anger and frustration (secondary emotions). Primary emotions are those feelings that are vulnerable and difficult to communicate (embarrassed, worried, afraid, etc), and most of us were taught through 'old-fashioned' parenting techniques to brush off or hide our feelings, before we even learn to be in touch with and identify them. If we grew up learning to handle emotions through anger and its various synonyms, we teach our children to do the same. It’s a vicious cycle. It somehow feels riskier to tell your child: “I feel embarrassed and afraid of being criticised when you don’t practise the table manners I taught you at home.” Baselessly, we believe this honesty will encourage our

78

Lamar Kanafani

children to take advantage of us. Compare that with: “You’re being rude and impolite at the dinner table. Show some respect and watch your manners!” The former is devoid of criticism, put-downs, name-calling, blaming and judgement; and in fact invites your child to understand and empathise and to willingly cooperate from a desire to please you. The latter communicates that your child is bad and there’s something wrong with them. So why should they try any harder when that is what you think of them? Children live up to your expectations, which are communicated through your words and actions. One way to prevent yourself giving in to spanking is to make an effort to prevent the anger taking over in the first place. You will need to be very self-aware in the moment and understand what might be contributing to this. Ask yourself: Am I tired or sick, am I

physically in pain, am I frustrated with my husband/wife, was I yelled at by my boss today, have I been overloaded with stressors lately, etc? Also, ask yourself: Is my child tired, hungry, upset at something unrelated to the moment, worried, exhausted, uncomfortable, etc? Remember, your child’s behaviour, any behaviour, is his/her way of communicating something internal; so get curious, rather than reactive, and then investigate the matter to attend to the root cause of the emotional overwhelm. If you find that you’ve reached your limit, take care of yourself first because you won’t otherwise be able to properly take care of your child. Get yourself in the habit of telling your child something along the lines of: “I’m feeling such and such right now, so let’s take a break. I need to calm down, gather my thoughts, and we will readdress the issue later.” If you’re in public, remove both yourself and your child from the crowd. This small but significant act in itself gives you time to breathe and think before you act, and it eliminates the embarrassing emotions generated simply by being in public. For more suggestions on what to do in the moment, like breathing exercises, counting to 10 etc, you can visit anti-spanking websites. However, be mindful and disregard 'expert' advice that encourages punitive, controlling or shameful parenting tactics. Star

Gazing Raphael tells us what’s written in the stars this month Sagittarius Health matters will take a turn for the better when you realize that a current course of medication has fortunately proven to be successful and you can look to get yourself back on track, with these concerns behind you. Your renewed sense of confidence will see you get a neglected career back on track and for some of you there could even be the decision to go travelling. Whatever you do, this is going to be the start of a new and positive phase in your life so enjoy it.

Aquarius

Never a sign to sit still for too long, you are likely to find this month a particularly frustrating one as your plans to move certain projects along are held up by forces outside of your control. However, don’t allow things to get on top of you. Whilst you are waiting for certain issues to resolve themselves perhaps you should think about taking stock of other areas in your life because there is still a great deal of work to be done to restore a partnership to its former state.

Pisces

Early on this month there is likely to be quite an upheaval for you to contend with and change is something your sign does not handle very well. That said, you will have to overcome this hurdle if you are to move on towards greater achievements for the remainder of the month. Try to push past your shyness and let your hair down a little. This could be just the boost you need to get those sparks of passion fired up again!

Aries

Although you don’t mix well with earth signs – www.womanthismonth.com

Cancer

A recent break-up is going to still be playing heavily on your mind and, while you may have tried to distance yourself from your past, familiar surroundings and too many raw memories are making it difficult for your to move on. The best solution might be to try and get away for a while and clear your head in anticipation of new opportunities. Life moves in cycles and not always in black and white. Give yourself a few weeks to put some colour back into your world.

Leo

This might be the month of celebration for many of you but there remain burdens that make it difficult to really enjoy the festive season as you would like. The reality is that you can shed these problems fairly easily if you just apply a little disciplined thought to the matter on your mind. Honesty is the best policy but that’s being honest with yourself as well as those around you. Shed your troubles and get in the spirit with everyone else.

Capricorn

It seems that a rash purchase made last month is going to cause you some problems in December as things start to go wrong with regrettable results. You clearly did not take the advice given to you and it might be wise to cut your losses and get out while you can rather than trying to fix a problem that is really not worth fixing. Now is certainly not the time to try and nurse your wounded pride. It’s far more important to get straight.

horoscopes

Virgo

December is traditionally the time of Capricorn – it is going to be a productive month for many of you, especially where business is concerned. You have a few irons in the fire and you want to strike now, whilst the initiative is with you. My advice would be to just go full steam ahead because everything you do right now is going to turn to gold and this could provide a really productive outcome.

Taurus

Your stubborn nature can sometimes land you in hot water and this month in particular you might find that you are forced into a difficult situation because you dig your heels in a little too deeply. There is an argument to suggest that you should perhaps rethink your attitude but that might be an easier thing to say than do. For now, your most immediate problem could be to reconcile the relationship that has been harmed because of it.

Gemini

For some time now you have laboured with several choices in your life and it would be fair to suggest that if anything, what you are really seeking is some kind of direction. December will see you presented with a job offer that could go some way to offering a long-term solution but you should really go with your gut instincts because the rewards could be plentiful. You know what you can do when you put your mind to it, so get it right and you will succeed.

The greatest challenge for you this month is going to be an emotional one. Your heart is struggling to accept a decision that has left you nursing a painful wound and it might be some time before you are able to get over it. However, every cloud has a silver lining and the 21st of the month will see things change for the better when news reaches you of an overseas opportunity that might just take your mind off things and prove to be too good to ignore.

Libra

If you have been trying to balance your finances then this may just prove to be the month when you have to face facts and realise that you cannot hide from the truth any longer. Serious action is required and the first thing you need to do is get someone in a professional capacity to review your accounts and put them in order. It might be a scary prospect but you shouldn’t take this as failure but an opportunity to get your world back on track.

Scorpio

After a long period away, your return to family and friends is going to make you realise just how much you are loved as well as how much you have missed those closest to you. However, once you settle back into regular life, it won’t be long before you seek a new challenge and there are several opportunities that will find you, although not all of them may come around as immediately as you would want them to. Be patient and work out the best option for you in the long term. December 2016
