Welcome The Creative Side

G U E S T E D I T O R ' s l etter

lthough February calls for a Valentine’s feature, we chose to take a detour this year and took a look at the ‘imaginative’. We had a chat with three local female entrepreneurs — Manar Al Rayes, Weam Zabar and Zainab Al Alawi — who eradicate the myth that creativity is limited to careers involved with art and culture alone. They give us an insight on how to apply innovation to push any business toward unprecedented success. On a related note, we feature the website, The Daily Muse, which targets career-minded women around the globe. WTM understands the life of a busy woman; a hectic schedule is no excuse to give up on skincare and good looks. So, we have put together a list of beauty essentials that should make “decking up” much easier in the morning. After our tips, your on-the-go makeup bag will be lighter than ever. We also investigated the recent beauty fad of BB creams; we’re more than impressed. Speaking of a busy lifestyle, Dr Clare Beckett-McInroy talks about the need to simply slow down and enjoy the moment. If sleep is what you want, sleep is what you’ll get. Insomniacs can use our 10 tricks to the perfect slumber. Dr Jinan Darwish asks women to run a few check-ups before choosing to get pregnant. Find out what could be affecting your child’s heart. We also look at alternative foods for protein intake other than the usual suspects of turkey, fish and egg. As long as you’re watching your health, we think you should set aside those rosetinted glasses for a minute and get your eyes checked. If you don’t know where to go, our report on the Kingdom’s leading opticians should be of help. It is, after all, the month of romance. Those stuck for gift ideas can find some great options in our special shopping feature. The amorous amongst you can find inspiration from our tips on cooking, dressing and redecorating for the occasion. Bring out the reds, we say.

Write Here Write Now STAR LETTER Stay updated The Marriage 2.0 was an interesting read, although I do not completely agree with the “hardheaded woman”. This doesn’t really have anything to do with the concept of marriage disappearing on a downhill road or her questioning customs related to nuptials. It has more to do with the careless titling of the article. It would be a little wise for her to do her research. Anyone staying up-to-date with technology should know that there is no such thing as a version 2.0. It is often a version 3.0 that pops up as the newest edition in the market. Maybe before she thinks about modernizing the age-old practice of matrimony, she should learn to

The faux-leather jacket is an icon for bad boys, bikers and rock’n’roll superstars, but it is also in the wardrobe of the feminine, but contemporary, girl. Think out of the box when putting together a strong and wild faux-leather jacket together with a sheer dress; it is just like being in love, when the opposites attract. The perfect match gives a laid-back elegance to your dress code. If you want to stand out, play with colours to get the look you want. 20

Skinny faux-leather trousers are a must-have piece to keep in your wardrobe. Their versatile nature enables numerous looks. From party nights to a casual get-together, they can be teamed up with the all-time white T-shirt and flats or, if you can handle it, opt for heels and pull it off with a printed top. Together with some accessories and ‘wild hair’, this look will express your independent view of life. Have fun mixing and matching your wardrobe to ensure the look above.

WoMentality

Dear

Marriage 2.0 By Hard-headed Woman

Thanks to technology, we have updated everything over the past few decades. Yet, marriage which continues to fail at an alarming rate has never had an update. Are we failing thanks to a bad copy of a flawed design? ith all the updates and downloads, new versions of old programmes and the latest technology everywhere, I am a little shocked that despite our modern ways and our drive to modernise everything, the age old practice of marriage has not changed. Today, just like centuries ago, partners walk down the aisle in front of witnesses to

W 64

| January 2013

profess their love and commitment to one another. Nevertheless, I read an article recently about the staggering growth of divorces and separations in Europe. Ten years ago the rate was 200 per 1,000 marriages, now the rate with separations and divorces together is closer to 600 per 1,000 within the first ten years of marriage. Why then do we bother? Why do we waste the money? Why do we promise “through sickness and health, through richer or poorer, for better or worse”, when few of us believe them and fewer will honour the words? Is it an ego-driven addiction that we must have pomp and circumstance surrounding our love to show off to our friends the wealth we have and the happiness we dream of? Or is it just a silly addiction like smoking? Facts prove that it’s going to harm us, but we do it anyway. To avoid disorder in society; we must have order, laws and rules; or we would all do as we pleased and seven billion people on earth would just go rampant. However, following a system which is proven to be flawed would seem to me a superfluous act, and as a single woman, a waste of money to an extent and a contrarian act at that. We just aren’t the people we were decades, centuries and millennia ago. Weddings were a great idea when life expectancy was 30. The majority of us don’t believe in the things our parents did. We don’t have the same values. We seek personal freedom and happiness over “doing what’s best for the kids”. None of us really cares for what society thinks, if we are married or divorced. Most of our friends are separated. So who’s to judge? It is a sad reflection of where we are going as people. We want the fairy tale so badly that we follow our heart over what our brain screams at us. We walk down the pretty little aisle, invite all our friends to impress them, speak the same old words of centuries ago, sign away our lives on an irrelevant piece of paper called a marriage license, throw the rice and open gifts like this fairy tale will last forever. Perhaps, what we forget is that these fables end with six final words — and they lived happily ever after. We never truly get to see if they did or not, or for how long forever was. Even the final few words of the story are enchanted after all. We say we “believe” in weddings and “marriage”. All the same, do many of us understand what the white dress refers to and how many of us are as pure as it signifies? A friend of mine is a chef. His business was once busy with just birthday cakes and wedding cakes. Today his range has extended to divorce, separation and annulment cakes. He’s happy with the state of current life. Our misery makes him busier. As a single girl still hoping that the fairy tale exists, I am sadly beginning to feel that it does not. What I am beginning to believe is that someone needs to write a new programme and download it. Marriage 2.0 would be a best seller and hopefully provide some answers for the generation ahead. Otherwise, I fear marriage will simply become a thing of the past, a side-show attraction one can only find in Las Vegas. Perhaps, that’s exactly where it belongs — in a town built on dreams. www.womanthismonth.com

Fashion mishap As a student of fashion designing, I follow most local magazines to understand the styles most appreciated here. I have to say I am a little disappointed with the lack of diversity in the fashion spread. I am a fan of bright colours and funky patterns. Prints are big this season and last. It’s a shame that there is a looming mood of monotony in the pieces showcased. Of course, they are all amazing buys. Yet, I hope that you consider those of us who like to be loud. Lyn, by email. reorganize her own thinking. Also, it is a shame that she has lost faith in wedlock. I myself have been “hitched”, as they say, for 26 years now. Instead of throwing out divorce stats, she should learn to find hope in those marriages that have lasted. Happily married, by email.

1.

Little black dress. This is your fashion security blanket. The best thing about an LBD is that you can style it to make it your own. Channelling Audrey Hepburn? Add a set of pearls. If you want a more Anna Dello Russo look, pair your dress with bootees and some chunky jewellery.

Back to Basics By Maryam Toorani

Running out of trends to rock? Sometimes it is good to stick to the basics. Here is Woman This Month's list of wardrobe essentials that you can wear all year long.

2. Black pumps. A woman can never have too many shoes, that is

a given. But one thing that will never go out of trend is a pair of black heels; they can take you from day to night flawlessly.

3. Quality jeans. No closet is complete without flattering, hip-

skimming jeans. Keep two pairs on hand in light and dark tones — just make sure the cut suits your body shape.

4.

Feminine blouse. Enhance your office wear with this wardrobe staple. If you want the ‘rocker chic’ look that your favourite celebrities have been sporting, pair a girly blouse with a leather jacket.

15. Boots. These can make or break an outfit. Choose between flat, over the knee or heeled ankle boots. Better yet, get all!

16.

An everyday bag. If you are looking for an item to splurge on, this is it. Make sure it is a classic tote that will go with everything; something leather would be the ideal choice.

17. Black trousers. Every girl needs at least one pair of work

trousers suit in her wardrobe. To get the most from this essential, select a fabric that would be suitable for both summer and winter temperatures.

18.

Stud earrings. Diamonds are timeless. And what better way to spoil yourself than with a pair of studs. However, if you aren’t willing to max out your credit card, opt for sparkling crystals instead.

19.

5. Blazer. If there is one item that is an absolute must for a working

Cardigan. This cover up goes well over anything; you can wear it over a shift dress and then ditch the extra coverage for a night out in town. Neutral shades are always your best bet when it comes to basics.

6.

Striped tee. This piece is the most versatile in your wardrobe. The stripped print is a trend that has been around forever and you can never go wrong with it. Pair it with a blazer for work or with skinny jeans and heels for a weekend look.

girl, it has to be a chic black or navy blazer. This gives you a pulled together look without too much effort and can be removed when the temperature rises.

Tights. The perfect way to transform a summer dress into a winter outfit is to pair it with dark tights. This could also work with shorts and skirts. Accessorise with a scarf and flat ankle boots and you are ready to head out.

20.

7. Sweater. Given that sweater weather is finally upon us, this is

the best item of clothing to sport when you are heading out for coffee with the girls. Choose thin knits, in cotton or wool, to layer easily for versatility and comfort.

8. Pencil skirt. This staple is for the sleek and sophisticated

woman. Someone who has perfected this look is Victoria Beckham and taking notes from the queen of fashion herself has never hurt anyone’s image.

9.

Maxi dress. This long and loungey dress is easy to wear and flattering for all body types. Although it is mostly associated with summer wear, adding a fitted blazer can make it work for winter, too.

10.

Lacy lingerie. Yes, this isn’t something you can flaunt around for everyone, but every woman knows that a pretty lingerie set gives you an instant confidence boost for a big night out.

11.

Scarf. This important accessory really pulls an outfit together. Invest in a chunky woollen one for winter and a printed chiffon style for spring.

12.

Coat. The trick with this outerwear essential is finding a style that suits you, and sticking to it. Trench coats were huge on the runways, as were oversized pieces and the military cut.

13.

Bathing suit. Always have a cute swim suit in hand. With the island’s unpredictable weather, you never know when you will be invited to your next pool party!

14.

Ballet flats. Just as essential as black heels are a pair of comfy flats; especially for those days when you have a glamorous event to attend but your feet need a break from stilettos. 22

Shopping frenzy The Back to Basics feature could not have come at a better time. One of my New Year resolutions was to sort out my closet. The 20 essentials made it so much easier to figure what needed to stay and what had to go. An added bonus was the fact that I realized I didn’t have most of the key pieces. Although my credit card took a beating, putting a look together is too easy now, saving time before I head out. My mom had taught me a little trick to feel less guilty about shopping. According to her, every time you buy clothes, the same number of items should leave your closet in the form of a donation. This way, I’ve also crossed out another resolution by giving away to the needy. Maybe others could practise this too. Izzy, by email.

Pick of the Month Anniversaries are always an event to celebrate, especially if the number of years representing excellence in designing jewellery reaches 175.

Why it was selected It is not everyday that a brand celebrates its 175th anniversary. Tiffany & Co is certainly in good shape for a company with a long history of success. The highlight of their celebration was an exhibition featuring jewellery from the brand’s archives and the appearance of the company’s greatest icon, the yellow 128.54 carat diamond at Dubai Mall last month. The exhibition titled ‘A Legacy of Diamonds’ also presented a contemporary collection of handcrafted jewellery featuring the gemstones the company first introduced, along with the world’s rarest coloured diamonds. An opportunity for customers, gem collectors and jewellery historians, the setting helped them appreciate the company’s heritage.

What we like Being an important luxury destination, Dubai was chosen as one of only three cities outside New York to showcase the Tiffany Diamond. Alongside Tokyo and Beijing, this UAE state represents the importance of the Arabic market in the luxury scene across the globe. The Tiffany Diamond is the finest yellow diamond ever discovered. Found in the Kimberly diamond mines in South Africa in 1877, the rough stone was acquired the following year by the founder, Charles Lewis Tiffany.

What else to look for Tiffany’s coloured diamonds are a marvel from nature. The list of gemstones introduced to the world by this jewellery giant includes the shimmering pink morganite discovered in Madagascar; the lilac-pink kunzite from California; tanzanite, blue like the ocean with flashes of violet, found in Tanzania; and tsavorite, also from Africa, with a rich green hue. The stones with saturated colours and fine cuts reveal their natural charisma when touched by Tiffany’s skilled artisans. Where to find it Shop for Tiffany & Co at Moda Mall. Call 17 531-616.

Tapping the Inner Genius It does not matter what influences we have been subjected to. It’s our unique approach to life and its challenges that really defines who we are. reativity is a quality that we most often associate with the arts and artistic endeavours rather than anything else. It is only in recent times that creativity has been acknowledged in the sphere of business. Yet, most entrepreneurs will vouch for the fact that it was the thrill of creating something new and the joy of achieving it which keeps them going. We spoke to three young businesswomen in Bahrain to examine how they apply creativity in driving their business forward.

Manar Al Rayes

www.womanthismonth.com

Fresh Perspective Manar Al Rayes believes in examining everything that’s happening in her field of interest before she can develop her own perspective of things. The 24-year-old brand manager of fashion accessories at Sharif Group handles such brands as Armani, Misaki, Crislu, Rochas, Pierre Cardin and Espirit on her own. Her brief involves travelling to international exhibitions where she orders jewellery, followed by stocking, pricing as well as marketing the collections for four A La Mode showrooms across the entire country. While there is no dearth of advice from the women in the family, especially her mother, Manar is always eager for client feedback and forever trying to learn about the changing tastes. She has now learnt to trust her “gut feeling” developed over the last two years, in bringing specific designs to Bahrain. Manar is now readying for the launch of the Cavalli line of jewellery on the occasion of Valentine’s Day. She’s trained her eyes on her newly opened store at Enma Mall in Riffa, where the top end accessory lines have been flying off the shelves. An enthusiastic ambassador of her brands, she habitually sports pieces from her latest collection, something that never fails to catch the eye of friends and acquaintances. Taking her brand promotions viral, Manar has an Instagram page, where she routinely uploads the latest jewellery lines. This business and finance graduate from the University of Bangor, Wales, is happy to divide her time between her twin passions — handling delicate jewellery by day and hard core martial arts by evening. “Through the practice of Taekwondo, I’ve developed a lot of confidence and discipline, essential attributes in my line of work. Of course, it is a great stress buster and helps me release all the negative energy,” says this petite black belt holder from Albanna Taekwondo Center. Manar uses platforms such as Jewellery Arabia for direct interaction with her clients and suppliers.

People Weam Zabar

Invoking a Higher Self Her high stress corporate job was leaving her drained, when a healing course with a reiki master suddenly opened up Weam Zabar’s horizons. As she started reiki healing for others, she discovered a world where she could relax while being on a daily job. Weam launched Namaste Bahrain, which she calls her ‘one-stop shop for holistic healing and self discovery’ in April 2011. “There are plenty of places offering physical relaxation in Bahrain. With Namaste, the idea was to create a sanctuary, a hideaway that one can leave feeling more centred and connected with oneself,” she says. Catering to the body as well as the mind, the centre offers a wide array of services with classes and workshops in yoga, reiki, art therapy, reflexology, pilates, hypnotherapy and gastric mind band therapy. Weam is bubbling with ideas for activities every month, devising a mix of workshops and retreats that appeal to various age groups. She’s flying in a yoga teacher from India for a workshop, while a meditation retreat slated for February in Sri Lanka has already been sold out. For Weam, meditation has been her key to creativity, the door between her inner and outer worlds. “All the great artists, writers and sculptors would attest that creativity flows not when they are thinking from their lower mind, but from their higher self,” she says. “As an entrepreneur, I learnt that I needed to change my orientation and mental habits before I could change the world around me. The outer world is a reflection of the inner one and I need to spend more time working on myself before I try to change things externally,” she adds. Weam now plans to affiliate her centre with the Yoga Alliance to turn it into a Yoga School where teachers can undertake certified yoga training.

Zainab Al Alawi

Envisioning Trends A self-confessed day dreamer, Zainab Al Alawi practises the art of tapping into a rich mental imagery when she’s looking for ideas. The 23-year-old fashion buyer and brand manager of the multi-brand boutique. Sacoche, derives her inspiration from music, art and travel. Also managing the Italian fashion label Balenciaga, Zainab has a job that most girls her age would envy. She keeps up with the latest fashion trends and upcoming designers by constantly travelling to fashion shows in Milan, Paris and London. “We showcase a hand-picked selection of creations from the leading designers, sourced directly from the runways of the fashin capitals of the world,” she says. Back in Bahrain, she visualises the display at her stores and advises clients on style and the latest trends. Two years into the job, her initial euphoria has now subsided and her perspective tinged with experience. “I realise that I cannot bring in whatever I like. I need to take into account the multicultural base of Bahrain, as well as the regional tastes and preferences,” she adds. However, the buying pattern has definitely changed since she joined the company. While Sacoche Boutique continues its association with high-end labels Zagliani, Nancy Gonzalez and Lana Marks, Zainab has opted to bring in the more affordable, but stylish and sophisticated labels such as M Missoni, Red Valentino and Issa London. Fashion Forward

Now is a good time to ignore gender rules and hit the men’s wardrobe as the androgynous trend hasn’t backed down. If you’re new to the style, here are a few pieces that will help you nail the look.

His and hers

Lacoste’s sportive appeal brings up the unisex idea of this look. The range can be worn by boys and girls with no distinction, except for the odd ‘girly’ colour. Few touches like heels, accessories and make-up can take it deep within the feminine world.

Pull your socks up Nowadays socks aren’t a boring clothing item meant to just warm our feet. They are fun and cute, with a range of patterns and colours. These long ones from Marks & Spencer can bring a manly touch to your outfit. Flaunt them with medium cut boots and you are ready to go.

A common ground

Ralph Lauren happily succeeded when putting masculine and feminine together in his collection. The boyish look got balanced with the girlish style with tight, colourful and patterned clothes. Blazers, vests, ties and even hats are items from the men’s wardrobe. However, with heels and specific cuts for the female body, it turns into a feminine outfit in a blink. 18

Walk it off

Tired of heels? The Oxford shoe style is back on the scene. The masculine shoes are now on every girl’s wish list. Who can complain when the style is pain-free, as well as elegant and classy at the same time? They are matched well with cropped trousers, dresses and tight suits. This doublecoloured pair from Massimo Dutti is a wardrobe must-have. www.womanthismonth.com

The idea of wearing an unusual piece is to play with it. Putting opposites together shows that you can use fashion in your favour. Picture a floral dress, ballerinas, a bun, light make-up and this H&M bowtie; you now have a great outfit to hangout with friends.

Smarty pants Trousers in a boyfriend cut are already in many of our closets. They are comfortable and fun to wear with fitted t-shirts, high heels and a bunch of accessories. This green cropped piece from Gap, paired with your much-loved white shirt, makes for the perfect casual daywear.

What the

Stars

are Wearing

By Fernanda Langhammer

From flowing gowns to items from the newest collections, stars have been giving the fairy tale theme a modern twist. Get inspired by what caught our eye this February. Freida Pinto During the opening night of the 9th Annual Dubai International Film Festival, Freida Pinto chose a gold and purple Salvatore Ferragamo clutch to carry her belongings. The subtle accessory was a smart choice, as her long and shiny golden dress was already stealing the scene.

Olivia Palermo Like a scene from a romantic movie, the socialite Olivia Palermo selected a Carrera y Carrera ring, for her bike ride with her boyfriend Johannes Huebl in the streets of Upper East Side of New York City. The statement piece stands out from her monochromatic outfit.

Dakota Fanning The talented young actress made her appearance at the J Estina Photocall in Seoul wearing a Nina Ricci mini-dress. The white lace piece celebrates the youthful features she is known for. The transparency and short length gives it a modern twist without losing its romantic appeal. 20

| February 2013

Emma Stone The actress was seen at JFK Airport carrying a striped duffle bag from Coach. This type of carrier is a good option for a few pieces of clothes. Available in black, burgundy and light brown colours, it’s a perennial choice for winter time. www.womanthismonth.com

Naomi Watts Naomi Watts attended the 2013 Palm Springs International Film Festival wearing a sapphire gown from Roland Mouret. The classic but contemporary dress suits the subtle elegance of the actress who frequently opts for a natural, never overdone, look.

Katie Cassidy The leading lady of Arrow attended Audi Golden Globe Kick Off party in Los Angeles wearing a silver lace piece teamed with a metallic clutch from Roger Vivier. The rock n’ roll style gets a pinch of romance with the delicate fabric. This trend is here to stay. Halle Berry While out and about in Los Angeles, the Oscar-winning actress was seen wearing a Tod’s white leather sunglasses. A short hair style is certainly the best companion for accessories; they pop, giving you a more stylish look.

Jessica Biel The newly-wed actress wore a floor-length gown from Versace’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection on the premiere of her new film, Playing for Keeps held at AMC Loews Lincoln Square. The asymmetric cut is a strong trend for the next season and a playful choice for the youthful. The tie-dye print is the high point of this outfit. www.womanthismonth.com

Miranda Kerr The Victoria’s Secret Angel was spotted leaving the grocery shop, Whole Foods in Hollywood, wearing a bright yellow Stella McCartney oversized blazer. The sunshine colour is a mandatory hue to have in your wardrobe next season.

oman This Month sits down with Grimas Professional Make-up Studio marketing manager and artist Laila Dashti to learn how she turns her client into a photoshoot-ready model in no time. The studio’s number one rule of thumb is to thoroughly moisturise the skin before any kind of make-up application. She first hides dark circles under the eye and other blemishes with a concealer that is one shade lighter than the model’s skin. For women with dry or sensitive skin, the cosmetics expert suggests the use of liquid or cream-based foundation. “All of our products are paraben-, chemicaland fragrance-free and will not irritate the skin. Alternatively, those with oily skin should opt for our water-based foundation. It has a velvety, matte finish that will last all day,” she advised. To intensify the look, Laila uses false lashes with coats of mascara and then applies shadow on the brows to make a statement. Call 17 004-656 or 77 005-981.

ou may have seen or heard about BB creams, the new generation in skin lotions, which is changing the market. With an abbreviation that stands for blemish balm, the trend started to gain popularity in Asia although it originated in Germany. Dermatologists have been recommending them for healing scars caused by laser skin surgery, due to the skin regenerating properties found in its formula. However, the movement to use it as an everyday skincare regime started in Korea, spreading to Japan, China and all of South East Asia. It has since made its way to Europe and the USA. Clearly, BB creams have proved to be wonder workers. Here are a few reasons as to why the multitasking product has won its place in the skincare and cosmetics industry.

Y

All in one One of the important characteristics of BB creams is that it offers multiple results. If you think that it is only a kind of foundation plus a regular cream, you are more than wrong. Most of these lotions have makeup, sunscreen, and skincare functions. Once applied, a beauty balm evens out the skin

tone, improves the texture, offers anti-ageing benefits and protects the skin from UV rays and other pollutants in the air. It enjoys the title of a miracle cream by modern, utterly busy women. To top it off, these heavy-duty benefits are all packed into lightweight formulas; BB creams feel natural on the skin. It also helps enhance whatever skincare you already use. As if that isn’t good enough, these products suit all complexions. The sceptic in us might think that all this is too good to be true. After all, who can believe all these benefits can come from a single tube? Doubters can have a look at the number of well-known brands that have been introducing BB creams in their product range. Time for change I am sure your morning beauty regime is quite similar to mine: wash the face, put an antiageing cream or moisturiser, follow it with a primer, and then a sunblock (mine already has foundation with it, so one step less), and finally finish it with powder before we can start on our everyday make-up. Wouldn’t it be much easier if we could jump all these steps with a single cream? Although

we might miss our loyal lotions, a contemporary solution is what we need and that is exactly what a BB cream provides. In fact, they are designed to go a few steps forward in skincare with additional ingredients like hyaluronic acid and antioxidants that help regenerate the skin. Which to try? If this beauty marvel is on your shopping list, there is no doubt an unavoidable question hovering over you: “Which one do I buy?” The trend has spread so far and wide that there are so many reliable brands in the market offering their newest BB cream that choosing one will be a challenge. The simplest way would be to check if the one you want to buy lists the benefits mentioned above. It would be wise to go for brands that have already been tried and tested. Unlike popular belief, trying more than one is advisable to find what best suits your skin. If you can give your shampoo a few tries before settling on a brand, why not do the same for your skin? It is all about feeling light and comfortable after having applied it. Most importantly, you need to see results.

On the shelves: Bobbi Brown The Body Shop

The All-in-One BB cream possesses a lightweight formula that provides 24-hour nonclogging hydration. The pigment-filled capsules of the white cream burst on application to release colour that blends to your skin tone giving a smooth, undetectable finish.

UNE

The Intuitive Touch BB cream foundation from UNE boasts a 100 per cent natural formula. Compact and refillable, it can be applied with fingers or a brush and comes in seven different shades. The multi-function treatment camouflages skin blemishes, unifies, soothes and protects.

www.womanthismonth.com

This go-to skin protector offers long-term benefits: a more even skin tone, diminished appearance of fine lines, reduced redness and minimised pores. SPF35 boosts the formula with daily protection against harmful UVA/UVB rays and environmental hazards.

Estée Lauder

Get moisture, protection and flawless complexion all at once with the DayWear Anti-oxidant BB Creme SPF 35. It is an oil-free Beauty Benefit Creme for all skin types, providing skin with complete coverage to minimise flaws and maximise its natural radiance.

Bourjois

A genuine hybrid make-up and care product, BB cream foundation from Bourjois comes in four shades and offers eight actions in one single gesture. Its ‘go anywhere’ design is perfect for the girl on the move.

20 Tips

Beauty on the Go By Maryam Toorani

The modern day woman doesn’t have the luxury to spend hours prepping up before she takes on the world. Luckily, the Woman this Month beauty team has plenty of easy-tofollow tips that will have you out the door in no time; and looking fabulous while you’re at it.

32

www.womanthismonth.com

Your beauty emergency kit

10. Concealer. Our number one trick to hide tired, puffy eyes is a good concealer. Never leave home without it.

11. Eyeliner. A quick way to transition from day to night while on the move is by sporting a simple winged-liner look. For foolproof application, use a pencil instead of the liquid kind.

12. Moisturiser. This is a beauty essential. Pack one that can be used on both your hands and face for a quick nourishment fix.

13.

Tinted lip balm. No matter where you are headed, you should always have lip balm to keep your lips moisturised and flake-free.

14.

1. Dry shampoo. When you have no time to wash your hair and are in need of a quick fix, dry shampoo is your best bet. Apply on roots and it will instantly absorb oil as well as add volume to your tresses. Stash it in your car or office desk for emergencies.

Scarf or head band. This is your go-to solution for a bad hair day. Simply tie your hair into a bun and wear a trendy hair piece for a polished look; no one will ever know you didn’t have time to do your hair!

15. Make-up removal wipes.

Skip your foundation. It can be time consuming and even unnecessary, especially for a day look. Opt for a tinted moisturiser for hydration and coverage. Two birds, one stone.

2.

Pre-moistened make-up removing wipes are convenient must-haves for every woman. They remove dirt, make-up and oil from your eyes and face in a flash, while tightening pores and even offering antioxidant protection.

3. Let your hair down. Straightening your hair in the morning

16. Q-tips. This is the easiest way to

could take hours. Thankfully, the messy do is a huge trend for 2013. To avoid looking like you just got out of bed, apply some anti-frizz serum.

4.

Dry the basics. You woke up late and have 30 minutes to head out. Try the T-zone blow-dry. Dry down your bangs or part and just around your hairline.

5. Buy multi-purpose make-up. Use make-up that multitasks to speed up the application process. If you are on a tight budget for a beauty shopping spree, use lip gloss as cheek colour, bronzer as eye make-up and black shadow as eyeliner.

6.

Blot. Do you look like a grease monkey half way through your day? Always carry blotting tissue paper with you. If you are yet to try this product, we at WTM swear by it. Dab it on your problem areas and stay shine free for the rest of the day.

7. Add some colour. A pop of colour is one of the best ways to

waken a tired-looking complexion. Apply a rosy cream blush and a hint of lip stain and you are good to go.

8. Two-in-one. You might be on a busy schedule, but your hair

doesn’t have to suffer. Use two-in-one shampoo and conditioner to cut your shower time in half while still maintaining nourished locks.

9. Skip the lipstick. Yes, lipstick makes for a luscious pout.

However, for the up and about woman, the tinted lip gloss is a more practical alternative. You don’t need the same precision to put it on as you would a lipstick and it doesn’t look bad when it wears off. www.womanthismonth.com

correct raccoon eyes and other errors resulting from ‘on-the-go’ make-up’ application.

17. Your most flattering

lipstick. Do you have a dinner date but look washed out after a long day at work? Nothing will brighten up your smile like a bold colour on your lips.

18. Tweezers. Unnecessary? We

don’t think so! You never know when you are in need of a quick brow touch up and it’s always better to be prepared.

19.

Pack light. The purpose of a make-up bag is to carry only your ‘touch up’ tools. Pack light and carry your essentials. You can also look for special travel-sized beauty products to lighten your load.

20.

Keep it simple. Functionality is the key essence when choosing the right make-up bag. We suggest you go with a clear bag so you can easily see what is inside. It should be big enough to carry all that you need but small enough to fit into your everyday purse. February 2013 |

Crate and Barrel

Roll Out the Red Carpet By Elma Bartholomew

Colour is one way that people can put their stamp on the interiors of their home. Red has found its way back to the palette as the power hue of the season, perfect for February. he easiest way to look like you’ve made a drastic change to your home is to keep up with the colour trends of the season. It is also the trick to make a space interesting and to avoid falling into a décor rut. Whether it is choosing a new shade of paint for the walls or picking out a pair of cushions for the sofa, routinely re-accessorizing with pops of the latest pantone is the key to perpetually fresh and fun indoors. This year, it gets spicy with fiery shades of red. Ranging from fire truck to paprika, this is a bold colour to work with. It works well with hot pinks and intense yellows, in case you want it to blend in with the overall look. You can find more woody and cherry tones, which make for warm, exotic spaces.

An eye catcher, the scarlet tint is known to quicken the pulse and amplify energy levels. So if your room is in need of a wake up call, adding a few rubies and garnets should do the trick. Measured doses are advised to steer clear of overdoing the daring trend to an extent that it just looks tacky. Watch out! Before you start pulling out all things scarlet from your closet or store room and before you scribble down a list of décor items, decide if you want a few small touches or if you are willing to go all out? Those willing to go whole hog could simply repaint their walls with the bright colour. However, many might be overwhelmed by all

that red. Unless you want to give your room a total jumpstart, it is better to start by giving it a small taste of the trend. For instance, the pouf, cushion and throw designed by Jean Paul Gaultier for Roche Bobois form a fun range to work with. Known for his shocking designs, his vision of a home is no less eccentric. Its prints boast an unlikely mix of florals and flames on rich textures. A reliable item that can transform your space in no time is an area rug. The one from Pottery Barn offers a funky touch and sticks to the popular stripe trend as well. Accent pillows around the house are a winning style. We at WTM love the range from Versace. The florals cushions from @home are perfect for the subtle hints of coral. You could also bring in the flirtatious tone into the dining room. The stark red crockery set from Zara Home is a must-have as they are balanced with a more soothing shade of white. They’ve also got some interesting frames, perfect to deck up the mantel piece. BoConcept proves it isn’t colourshy with its range of sofas. They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, but we’re most fascinated by their contemporary leather range.

In the name of art Home décor is not about duplicating pages of an interiors magazine or furniture catalogue. It is about making your abode a part of you. Putting up a single piece of art can make a statement. Don’t worry if it does not mesh with the rest of the space. The rule is: your place, your style. All that’s important is that you are confident about the painting or wall hanging. Good art can’t look wrong anywhere. however a few cases that are caused by medical conditions that can be treated. In these cases, most or full mental functionality can be restored. Thyroid disease or Vitamin B12 deficiency can be treatable if diagnosed in early stages. Alzheimer disease is one type of dementia that can be treated by some medications to only slow down the process and prolong a person’s brain control. Alzheimer’s 101 Our expert: Qusai Al Haddad, specialist neurologist at Bahrain Specialist Hospital

here is probably no more a dreaded illness associated with getting older than any type of dementia. Millions of people around the world suffer from this identity-destroying condition and the numbers keep on increasing year by year. Far too often we hear about cases where parents can’t even remember their children’s names or find their way back home from the neighbourhood store. The real question we try to tackle is, why is it caused and are we all really helpless in the hands of this mind-robbing horror?

T

Dementia 101 Our expert: Dr Shahid Khan, internal medicine, American Mission Hospital Dementia is not a disease in itself, but rather a general term used to describe a decline in mental ability. Any kind of damage in the brain cells interferes with the capacity of the brain to communicate with the rest of the body. When this line of communication breaks (because of old age or a disease) normal actions like thinking and feeling can be affected. Symptoms vary depending on the cause or type of dementia. These include memory loss where the patient may forget his way back home or may forget names and places. Moodiness where the person cannot control their emotions can also be noticed sometimes. Communicative difficulties are usually sure signs that something is wrong and as the disease progresses, their ability to carry out everyday tasks diminishes. “Diagnosis requires a complete medical and neuropsychological evaluation. After a patient is www.womanthismonth.com

brought in by their family, the doctor first needs to determine the severity of their cognitive problem,“ explains Dr Khan. A detailed history is taken while a physical examination is carried out along with a few mental status tests and laboratory exams. Among them is the Minnesota Mini-mental Status Examination where a multiple questionnaire test is given to the patient. The score of the questionnaire evaluates the cognitive deficit of the patient, ranging from mild to severe. “A Brain CT scan or MRI can help us in determining the cause, which could be a stroke for example. Knowing the cause allows us to recommend the right treatment plan,” he adds. Can it be treated? Some medications can be used to help slow down the process but most treatments can neither reverse nor stop dementia. There are,

The most common form of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), increases with old age, but developing it is not a part of normal ageing. The exact cause of AD is yet to be clear. Studies show that genes and environmental factors seem to play a role. Risk factors, although not well proven, include having high blood pressure for a long time and a history of head trauma. Some studies even suggest that women are more likely to suffer from AD than men. Symptoms include difficulty with many areas of mental function like emotional behaviour or personality, language, memory, perception, thinking and judgment. The early symptoms can include difficulty performing tasks that take some thought, but used to come easily, such as balancing a cheque book, playing complex board games or learning new information or routines. “Getting lost on familiar routes and misplacing items as well as loss of social skills can be signs to look out for,” says Dr Qusai. As AD worsens, symptoms become more obvious and interfere with a person’s ability to take care of themselves. This can then result in a change in sleep patterns, delusions, depression and even something as simple as preparing meals or choosing proper clothing to wear. In the most severe case, a person can no longer understand language or recognize family members.

February 2013 |

37

Wellbeing Can it be prevented? Although some risk factors cannot be prevented, doctors continue to explore other factors that can help strengthen a person’s mental stability and functionality. There is no proven way to prevent AD, but there are some practices that may be worth incorporating into your daily routine, particularly if you have a family history of dementia. “Consuming a low-fat diet is the first step. Eat cold water fish like tuna, salmon, and mackerel rich in omega-3 fatty acids, at least two to three times per week,” the expert suggests. Cutting out margarine, butter and dairy products as well as increasing antioxidants like carotenoids, vitamin E, and vitamin C can also help. Studies even show that staying mentally and socially active has also proven to lower the risk factors of AD and other types of dementia.

“Cardiovascular health is a major contributor to mental health. Anything that damages blood vessels can deprive your brain from oxygen and food. Reduce risk: l Get moving. Numerous studies show a link between physical activity and healthy memory. Studies have found that aerobics sharpen daily performance, improves brain function and reduces risk for memory impairment over our lifetime. l Keep your mind busy. Intellectual stimulation, mental activities or even just furthering your education can play a great role in keeping your memory in check. Read a book, solve a crossword puzzle or learn something new. Whatever it is, make it a habit. l A brain-boosting diet. Cut out saturated fat from your diet as much as you can and say yes to food rich in omega-3 fatty acids like fish and antioxidants like berries. Also, many studies suggest that coffee helps keep your brain active in your later years. Start taking a daily multivitamin to help slow ageing in your brain.

Alternative Proteins By Maryam Toorani

Have you been contemplating cutting out meat from your diet? It may not be as hard as you think. We look into six alternatives, other than the overdone tofu, that will have you begging for seconds. itching meat has become an international health fad and you don’t have to be vegan to reap the benefits. Beef, pork, chicken and the likes may all be delicious and excellent sources of protein, but they also come at a cost of unhealthy saturated fats. Implement these alternative sources of proteins into your diet and not only are you left in better control of your health, but your physique and complexion will benefit too!

D

Tempeh Tempeh, although fairly new to the West, has been a staple in Indonesia for over 2,000 years. Made from soybeans, it has a distinctive nutty taste and is highly nutritious. Other than being an excellent meat alternative, it contains essential fatty acids, numerous vitamins, minerals and loads of fibre. Also, if you are a beginner at cooking, tempeh is very userfriendly and doesn’t produce the gastrointestinal discomfort that most bean meals do. www.womanthismonth.com

Quinoa While it is actually a seed, quinoa is traditionally cooked like rice or barley. It provides all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein and a great alternative for animal lovers. Gluten- and cholesterol-free, it helps you lose weight by filling you up with low calorie fibres and it also takes less time to cook than most whole grains. Lentils This is one of the tastiest on our list. Low in calories and high in nutrition, lentils contain the third highest level of protein in the legumes food group. A rich source of nutrients for vegetarians, lentils even help to reduce cholesterol since it contains lots of soluble fibre. What’s more; a medium-sized bowl goes up to only 250 calories, helping you feel fuller for longer. Seitan Although seitan is made from wheat, it has very little in common with bread or flour. When

cooked, it looks, feels, and even tastes like meat, making it the perfect replacement. If you are looking to shape up, this particular protein alternative is your best bet. It’s very low in fat and cholesterol and high in amino acids, vitamin C, riboflavin, thiamine, iron and niacin. Natto This is probably the most unappealing of the group, due mostly because of its distinct foul smell. Natto is basically fermented soybeans that is native to Japan and is actually served for breakfast. Although it is an acquired taste, its health benefits are worth a try. Sea vegetables While they are plant,, but sea veggies are one of the richest sources of proteins. Seaweed, in particular, contains a substance that converts itself to vitamin D in the body along with other key nutrients like carotene, chlorophyll, enzymes and fibre. Add this into any salad and you have yourself a fully nutritious meal. February 2013 |

10 Tips

Sound By Maryam Toorani

Asleep

Before you decide you have insomnia, the chances are that all you need is a better sleep routine. Try out our tips for a good night’s rest. 1. Sound environment

First thing’s first – eliminate all distractions. Your sleeping environment needs to be peaceful. If there is light in your room, wear an eye mask. If your neighbours are too loud, wear ear plugs.

5. Social media

Coffee drinkers already know that caffeine is a stimulant, but the same goes for tea, chocolate, soft drinks and nicotine; try to avoid all of these after dinner.

Find yourself waking up to check your phone? Social media could be the culprit to your lack of sleep. Keep your smartphone out of reach; no tweet or Facebook status will help you wake up fresh in the morning. Also, having to get up to turn off your phone alarm can also prove useful if you have a habit of hitting the snooze button in the morning.

3. Say no to naps

6. Establish a ritual

2. Avoid stimulants

When changing your sleeping patterns, napping is your enemy. If you need a quick recharge, try to keep your naps short and have them before 5pm.

4. Fast

This may sound a little drastic, but if you are in need of a complete sleep readjustment, studies 40

show that fasting 16 hours before you need to wake up can help reset your ‘inner-clock’.

| February 2013

Try relaxing right before you go to bed. Light a candle, take a bath or read a book. It is also important to avoid stressful activities like work or discussing emotional issues.

7. Sleep when you're tired

Forcing yourself to doze off when your body isn’t ready won’t help your situation. Also, struggling to

fall asleep just leads to frustration. Avoid the bed until you truly feel tired.

8. Balance fluid intake

Drink enough water at night to keep you from waking up thirsty; and, yes, that age old myth of a warm glass of milk before bed really does help you relax.

9. Exercise early

Exercise can help you nod off faster as long as it’s done at the right time. A workout can stimulates the body to release stress hormones, making the brain active and alert. So make sure you hit the gym atleast three hours before bed.

10. Set a bedtime

Your parents gave you bedtimes for a good reason. Sleeping and waking up at the same time every day can help your body develop a routine that your body can get use to. www.womanthismonth.com

Teach Your Children to

Take Their Time

Dr Clare Beckett-McInroy

It’s 2013. People want to live longer, achieve beyond expectations, do things faster and carry out more things simultaneously. The result? Life passes you by with a fair share of depression, anxiety, and ill health. 42

| February 2013

www.womanthismonth.com

hat can we do about this problem? One answer is to live by the rule of quality as opposed to quantity. Slow down and savour the moment as opposed to being fast and ferocious, wanting it all. There are so many activities that are improved by taking things a little slower. Exercising, eating, speaking, that extra coffee in the morning and the dreaded homework that young people have to endure can all benefit from an unhurried, more focussed attitude. Simply breathing slowly before you begin a task or when things get tricky can help you centre your thoughts. Try breathing in for six seconds and exhaling for 10 a few times; it really does help and is very calming too. Teach your children this simple technique because results of many substantial research reports prove that a calm and relaxed mind is the best state to learn new things and solve problems. Think of times when you were trying to juggle too many tasks; there is clutter in your mind. Errands may get forgotten and work may not be completed to the standard you wish whilst energy and time is wasted. In comparison, think of tasks you do when you are focussed. They are completed methodically, enabling you to achieve quality. How does this make you feel compared to the irritable voice of a parent who tells their children to hurry up? Of course, there are deadlines to meet and school bells to beat, but take some time to think about the impact you want as your child enters their classroom. Consider a scenario when the traffic was unusually slow and there was nothing you could do and your child got dressed relatively quickly that morning. What is the use in stressing and exasperating in such a situation? Is it not better to say, “...oh well...” and then they arrive at their class without shame and anxiety? It’s a choice. All your thoughts, actions and words are a choice.

W

Life balance Creating a better life balance is a fundamental strategy for wellbeing. Yes, speed does have a place but it is very different to rushed or flustered. What exactly should we focus on when speeding up? When it comes to making decisions, which we make all day every day, choices can be faster and less torturous if you set yourself and your children some rules. For instance, say that we will only be in this shop for only 10 minutes, focus on buying certain items and will select what we want from only three shops. Adding structure, boundaries and focus makes decision-making so much easier. The Internet provides you with the myth that you should search everywhere; look at several brands and compare prices. It www.womanthismonth.com

even has tools to help you with this. You can compare gadgets and quality reviews. As great as this might sound, it has a downside. You may wish to spend your time doing something different and, on occasions, good enough can be enough. Decide in advance how long you want to search or how many options you want to explore and then be disciplined. Stop browsing by consciously ignoring other possibilities as they can go on forever; so ignore ‘what ifs’. Ignore the trivial It is a very clever and useful tool to be able to consciously and actively ignore things. We are persistently bombarded with information, a great deal of which is out of our control and irrelevant. This skill has a whole host of applications. For example, just because you have a phone, it does not mean that you have to answer it or carry it with you. Of course, there are times when this is essential, when things are urgent and important, but on other occasions, think about what you really want to do at that time.

Do you want a quick chat with a friend about nothing in particular or do you want to read or play with your child? Choosing here really will mean that you are focussed on what you are doing instead of doing two things half-heartedly. The same applies to emails. Do you open every email just in case? Do you read emails that you know are not important to you just because they were sent to you? Do you reply immediately? Are you compelled to reply at all? If you delete or do not answer to a mail that is not important to you, rather than letting yourself be intimidated into dealing with it, you are making yourself so much more time for more important things. Again, this skill can be shared with your child as they begin to send and receive their own texts and email messages. Technology tries to convince us that fast is better, easier and more effective. Nevertheless, remember the passion and effort it takes to write a handwritten note or letter which is also usually more memorable to the receiver. February 2013 |

Multitasking Women, in general, are supposed to be able to multitask more effectively than men. Research shows that most men focus on one thing. For example, they watch television and find it difficult to answer questions or listen to other conversations. Is this a bad thing? Not really. They are living in the moment and concentrating on the one thing they wish to do. On the other hand, women need to know the consequence of this multitasking. We are never truly giving full attention to the other person or the task in hand. In short, it could be argued as quantity over quality. Decide what you metaphorically or physically want to switch off in order to focus.

The upshot The start of a new year is a great time to rediscover your relationship with life. This is about prioritising, exploring deeper and spending more time doing the things you love and to press the delete button on anything that does not keep you on this track. It is very clear cut. You are not programmed to do things 24/7. In contrast, you need to be passionate about your

choices, spontaneous and surprising even. You need to have structure, of course, but by moving in ‘slow motion’ when you have the chance, you savour the moment, live in the present, and notice improvements and achievements. You grow and treasure your special relationships more deeply. Imagine the life your child can have if they focus on ‘now’ and on quality? What a great way to live and learn!

Quality communication Shared adventures, caring, memories as well as learning about each other are the foundations of close relationships. So, the old basics like cooking together with your child, walking the dog, telling stories of your past, sharing photographs or playing a board game really do still have their place. The good news is that by leveraging and using your on/off/ ignore button more often you can increase the quality of your special moments. 44

Know Your Child’s Heart About one out of every 80 is born with heart defects each year in the Kingdom of Bahrain, while only one out of every 145 is born likewise in the USA. congenital heart defect (CHD) is a defect found in any component of the heart since birth. These failings set off in the early weeks of pregnancy when the organ is in the stage of forming. Some babies and children with the disease experience no symptoms. The defects may be diagnosed if the paediatrician or family physician hears an abnormal sound called a murmur. However, children with normal hearts can also have similar hums, called innocent or functional murmurs. In some cases, the defects can result in congestive heart failure. In this condition, the heart can’t pump adequate blood to the lungs or other parts of the body. It can lead to fluid build-up in the organs. An affected child may experience rapid heartbeat and breathing difficulties, particularly during exercise. Infants may experience these complications during feeding, sometimes resulting in poor weight gain. Affected infants and children may also experience swelling in the legs, abdomen or around the eyes.

A

The obvious sign A number of heart defects result in a pale greyish or bluish colouring of the skin called cyanosis. This typically appears soon after birth or during infancy and should be evaluated straight away by a paediatric cardiologist. In certain cases, cyanosis may be delayed until later in childhood. The appearance of this discolouration is an indication of defects that avert the blood from getting enough oxygen. As a result, patients with cyanosis may fatigue easily. Symptoms such as shortness of breath and fainting often worsen when the child exerts himself. Some may squat frequently to ease their shortness of breath. Babies and children who are suspected of having a heart defect are usually referred to a paediatric cardiologist. After a physical examination, he/she often recommends one or more of the following tests: chest X-ray; electrocardiogram (ECG), which is a test that records heart rate patterns; and an echocardiogram, which is a special form of

ultrasound that uses sound waves to take pictures of the heart. All of these tests are painless and non-invasive. Be cautious Parents who have previously had a child with a heart defect do have an increased possibility of having other affected children, often with a similar flaw. In many cases, the risk is low. Some heart defects have about a two to three per cent chance of recurrence. However, the risk may vary, depending on the kind of defect. If a child’s heart imperfection is part of a syndrome of other birth defects, the risk of reappearance in another pregnancy may be much higher. Parents who have had a child with CHD must consult their paediatric cardiologist and can discuss with a genetic counsellor to unearth the hazard to any future children. Those who themselves have or had a heart defect also are at an increased risk of having an affected child and ought to consider consultation before you decide to have a child.

What can cause CHD? • Rubella (German measles) during the first three months of pregnancy • Viral infections like the flu • Exposure to certain industrial chemicals or solvents • Alcohol consumption or using cocaine in pregnancy • Certain medications: acne medication containing isotretinoin; thalidomide used for rare skin disorders; certain anti-seizure medications; first-trimester use of trimethoprim-sulfonamide (a combination of antibiotics sometimes used to treat urinarytract infections) • Maternal diabetes mellitus or gestational diabetes • Chromosomal abnormalities like Down syndrome, Turner syndrome, Noonan syndrome, Velocardiofacial syndrome, HoltOram syndrome and Alagille syndrome For feedback, comments or questions contact Dr Jinan Darwish via email at: editor@womanthismonth.com www.womanthismonth.com

Keep Fevers in Check Having the latest technologies in hand allows you to accurately check your child’s temperature without even heading out to a clinic. he Braun ThermoScan ExacTemp ear thermometer has been designed to provide accurate temperature measurements within seconds and it is fitted with an easyto-read LCD display. Used by more doctors and mothers than any other infrared thermometer brand worldwide, this device is equipped with very helpful features. It boasts a small, soft and flexible tip, gives out a beep when it is ready and comes with alkaline batteries. The temperature range is from 34 to 42.2 degrees Celsius. While you have many ways of determining if your child has a fever, an ear thermometer is one of the quickest and most accurate ways of doing so. Compared to oral and rectal thermometers, this is a less invasive and faster way of taking your baby’s temperature. It uses infrared technology to measure the heat generated by the eardrum and surrounding tissues, which is a very good indicator of the body’s core temperature. Unlike other ear thermometers, Braun features a patented pre-warmed tip. It minimizes the cooling effect that could result from the insertion of a cold probe tip, thus ensuring accuracy. Its memory can store up to eight readings. Not only does it sport a lens filter detector and ejector; the fact that they are disposable reduces the chance of germ transfer. Also, the inbuilt guidance system checks the position of the thermometer. A light flashes during the measuring process, so as long as the probe is securely positioned, it will light up continuously once an accurate reading has been taken. Call 17 582-250.

BAHRAIN SPECIALIST HOSPITAL

Innovation in Gynaecology

Dr Murat Koc

Minimally invasive surgeries have gained enormous momentum within the obstetrics and gynaecology (OBYGYN) field. We speak to the specialists. he expert team at Bahrain Specialist Hospital (BSH) sets itself apart by providing women with the most advanced solutions. Using cutting-edge medical processes, laparoscopic treatments allow for procedures to be performed through tiny incisions that are no more than the size of a fingernail or even by no incisions at all. “As highly specialised doctors, we are committed to advancing in the field of surgical techniques within this specific area,” says Dr Murat Koc, OBYGYN consultant at BSH, who specialises in oncology and breast cancer and works with a diverse team to provide women with the safest and highest quality care. “One of our main priorities is to provide an alternative to the traditional open practice. We do this by using minimally invasive approaches when indicated and whenever possible based on the disease we are treating.”

T

How it works A small cut is made in the navel to allow for a www.womanthismonth.com

thin, lighted telescope to see and operate in the abdomen without having to perform an open procedure. Two or three smaller incisions are made along the sides of the abdomen where highly specialised instruments are used to perform the surgeries. “The treatments that a broad range of patients can undergo using this approach include hysterectomy, fibroid removal, advanced endometriosis and early stage gynaecological cancer. Lymphadenectomy (lymph node dissection) along with the treatment of simple or complex ovarian cysts and fertility problems can also be performed,” continues Murat. Laparoscopic visualisation, which uses 3D viewing, is among the many technologies used at the hospital to efficiently provide patients with the care they need. Using these techniques, patients experience significantly less trauma, a reduced amount of bleeding, decreased risk of infection and early return to normal activities after a short hospital stay.

Most importantly, the risks are exceptionally minimal compared to open conventional surgery. This approach enables patients to experience the least possible discomfort compared to traditional methods. In many cases, minimally invasive techniques can effectively treat gynaecological conditions without even having to remove any organ. The inside story Both a diagnostic and surgical procedure, hysteroscopy allows for a doctor to examine the uterus without making any abdominal incisions. A lighted viewing instrument is inserted through the cervix and into the uterus. Removal of polyps, fibroids, adhesions, treatment of all kinds of conditions like adhesions and abnormal bleeding can all be performed using hysteroscopy. This results in a shorter hospital stay, recovery time as well as less pain medication after surgery and avoidance of any open abdominal procedures. Call 17 812-000. February 2013 |

Food

For the Love of Cooking By James Claire

Cooking is a procedure of marrying the right ingredients to produce something better than its parts, a complete dish. It is about love for the art and the culinary adventure; not just for “the one”. n my mid-forties and still single, I find Valentine’s Day is a time of greater love for the one woman who has remained at my side for four decades and still only has nice words about me — my mother, the woman who during my childhood cooked our every meal. Yet, even despite all that cooking, I don’t recall her eating with us and when I do, I remember her eating sparingly. For a long while I presumed that she was too full from nibbling as she cooked; but I see it clearly know, she just loved

I

cooking more than she did eating. I love food and I adore cooking it. Having given 30 years to cooking as my primary career I still adore the process; finding delicious ingredients, contemplating how they work together and finally preparing the meal. Often though, when I am done and sit before the meal, I am just not desirous of eating it. This is not because I don’t like my own cooking, but because I adore the process more than the result.

If you truly love the one you’re with, go out for dinner, allow someone else to enjoy the process and you enjoy the company of each other. Take the time to talk and reminisce; remind yourselves why you fell in love in the first place. If the funds don’t allow, or if you’re flying solo, then find love and comfort in the art and joy that cooking a meal can give. Just remember how good the food tasted when the time comes for doing the dishes. Happy cooking!

Green Pea and Chive Soup 200g potatoes, peeled and cut into fine cubes 1 tbspn garlic paste 2 tbsns unsalted butter 1 1/2ltrs vegetable stock (or 1.5ltrs water and 4 vegetable stock cubes) 400g frozen peas, thawed 2 tbspns chives, finely chopped pinch salt pinch black pepper, freshly ground In a large sauce pan, heat the butter and when hot sauté the chopped potatoes and the garlic paste until lightly brown. l Add the vegetable stock and bring the mix to a boil. l Reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 15 minutes or until the potatoes are soft and tender. l Add the thawed peas and cook for a further 10 minutes or until the peas are tender. Cool slightly. l Use a hand wand mixer or a stand up blender and process the soup until smooth. l Add the chopped chives, salt and black pepper to taste and serve immediately with a small spoonful of sour cream in the centre. l

Find out what February has in store for you…

Aquarius January 21 - February 19

A change of career seems to be in the pipeline this month. This may seem a little unnerving at first, but you will discover a new role within a sector you never thought of entering before. On the relationship front, you may discover an admirer from times past decides to make a move on you and the long-term signs are positive, if you don’t let your enthusiasm get the better of you. Pisces February 20 - March 20

Just when you thought many of the complexities in your life had passed you by, a new problem rears its head and challenges all your preconceptions. A partner has not been entirely honest with you when it comes to his or her interest in another person and you could be in for quite a shock when you realise what is happening almost right under your nose. Whatever you do, don’t let indecision get in the way.

Aries March 21 - April 20

February is going to prove a very special month for your sign, whether you are in a relationship or about to embark upon something new. You will be in a very confident mood about the future and your romance, even if things still appear to be stacked against you. Something suggests that forces beyond your own control are at work here. Some of us only truly love once in life and this could be your moment.

Taurus April 21 - May 21

For many of you the last few weeks have been unsettling. However, as you progress through February, you will see your spirits lifted. Consequently, you will be able to combat anything life throws at you, although there won’t be many difficult problems to deal with. If anything, your greatest dilemma will involve the romantic interests of a fellow work colleague and whether or not to agree to their offer.

Gemini May 22 - June 21

Money has been a big issue over the last few months and just getting back onto level terms financially would be a major boost. Fortunately, the opportunity to do just that may come in the middle of this month, although you might have to make some tough choices to get there. However, you cannot 54

continue ignoring the future just so you can make it through today.

Cancer June 22 - July 23

Money has proven a sore point in a relationship on a number of occasions for you of late. However, you need to perhaps bite your tongue a little in February! Whilst you do have a generous nature, you also possess the need to control matters in your life and of those close to you. Convincing your nearest and dearest to think the same way might prove initially more difficult.

Leo July 24 - August 23

A recent change of job has seen you stretching yourself unexpectedly between your new role and a rather demanding partner whose personality has changed since the start of the year. Sit down and have it out with them or you might soon be forced to make a choice between someone you love and something you love to do.

Virgo August 24 - September 23

February will be a good month for you to begin saving towards a future investment. You may come into a small amount of money and you are advised to use this as the foundation to finance any proposed scheme. You should not rush into anything; be sure to seek advice. It will be better for you in the long run.

Libra September 24 - October 23

You will find yourself reflective throughout February and perhaps even discover an emotional side to yourself that you were completely unable to admit existed. Matters of the heart may be less trouble-free. Your misplaced words could cause more than just heartache to a partner. It’s not just family that needs your affection.

Scorpio October 24 - November 22

A new project or development will lift off with a great measure of success. However, you should beware of overconfidence and take care of any business dealings that you have left in the hands of others. Throughout February, you will also receive two enticing offers concerning the sale of certain goods.

Sagittarius November 23 - December 21

Your recent behaviour at a family gathering proved disappointing and though you may not yet realize it, there are several friends and relatives harbouring grudges and also waiting for an apology of some kind. Sometime towards the end of the month you will be invited to interview for a new position at work; do your homework.

Capricorn December 22 - January 20

The time for being afraid of taking a chance has to be put behind you if you are ever to make any headway in your life and attain the success you crave. Where career is concerned you need to learn to speak your mind. The ideal opportunity will present itself to you before the month is out. Missing out will see you having to wait a long time before you can make your mark again. www.womanthismonth.com

Sweet Valentine

By Hard-headed Woman

Tired of waiting for anything special these days I prefer to merely buy myself a block of chocolate just to stop myself from feeling neglected, before, on or after the ‘day of hearts’. have never been the biggest fan of Valentine’s Day, yet I kind of miss it now. People tend to simply sigh once it passes. Is that what love has come to? Like pumpkins at Halloween, turkey at Christmas or cake on a birthday, so too has chocolate resonated with the event of this day to become a tradition of February 14. Nothing else quite spells out the end to winter and goodbye to Christmas quicker than store shelves being cleared of mistletoes and candy canes; replaced by all things pink, heart-shaped or chocolate-filled. In Ancient Rome, Valentine was a saint who went against the orders of the day and performed secret marriages for young lovers. Though kind, he was executed for disobeying the law. The date of his demise is what is today celebrated as the day of hearts. In his memory, young lovers have since given notes to their intended, to remember the kindness of this wondrous sacrificing saint. It’s funny that today, young lovers need neither marriage nor the law to be together in the majority of countries around the world and yet the practice of secret notes (albeit in the shape of cards, texts and e-motions) continues. It seems we have forgotten one part of this ancient ritual and not the other — the romance of the event, over the factual parts. That is after all what Valentine’s Day is meant to resonate among us, romance for those we adore. A singular day where it is actually permitted to walk ever so gently on the wild side and send a loved one, an adoration or an acquaintance a secret gesture to state your having noticed them.

Its true meaning forgotten, the modern Valentine’s Day, like so many events, has crossed borders and stereotypes to be a global day to show love from one person to another, even though today it comes in a form which is a little cliché and Disney-fied. Sadly, within our country the date has come to mean other things, not so loving. There was a time when I did not like all things pink and fluffy, red roses or the Hallmark clichés. However, wouldn’t it be nice for us to remind one another that love has many forms and that peace is the only way in which to reconcile all our differences? Perhaps the modern version of this event could be like the Christmases of the World Wars; a day to stop all arguments, one of truce, peace, and discussions on mutual grounds whereby an exchange of roses, words and chocolates were passed between parties. Valentine sacrificed himself so that others may live in the manner in which they wanted and never to be denied their love for one another. He believed in the freedom of speech and of the heart. Perhaps it’s about time we showed gratitude and allowed everyone to live in peace and harmony the world over, February 14 being the day we stop to consider such an option. We are one people, living on a singular planet, residing within the borders of a solitary country. For one day at least each year, our hearts should all beat with one common aim — one of peace, love and safety for us all. Happy Valentine’s Day girls! www.womanthismonth.com
