Make it stop I loved the first look Fernanda put together in the GTL pages. As an active person, it’s only expected that I am happy this sporty chic style is in! I can finally use my t-shirts while putting together an outfit. It’s hard to pull off something casual as something sophisticated. So it would be really helpful if you would offer some more tips on the how to do so in the next issue. I find it annoying when women walk around in matching velvet tracksuits and call it sporty! They’re either watching TV or staring at a computer or swiping away on a smartphone. If a child doesn’t catch her mom or dad nose deep in a book once in a while, he or she is not even going to try. I started reading when I got to college and I regret not having started sooner. Schools should take the initiative to get their students into the habit of reading. I just wrote to thank you for your feature on the need to read. I only found out about it because my friend dragged me along to pick some books for her daughter after she read the article. Inspired to change The women featured in Woman This Month are always so inspiring. I have never considered a career in the Navy. The truth is I made this decision without even doing any research on how hard it is going to be. After reading your story on Eleanor Stack, I was forced to wonder why I did not consider something daring or even dare to pursue what my true ambition was — to fly! I’ve always given myself reasons for not following up with things or taking risks. I have been so busy convincing myself that I can’t do things that I turned 34 without amounting to much, at least not even as much as I am capable of. As I went on to read Raha’s story, I was sure that nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it. I hate to admit that my negativity is the only reason that I am stuck in a job that I don’t enjoy and continue to go to. And I am the only one at fault for being unhappy with myself. I want to believe that I will bring change into my life. But old habits die hard. Thankfully, I have a great support system. I’ve started making a list of what I need to finish by the end of 2014 and what I should have accomplished five years from now. I need to tell myself every day that age has nothing to do with accomplishments. I want to thank you for opening my eyes. I hope to write to you when I have scratched off everything I’ve planned for 2014. Wish me luck! Laila

Most dentists will tell you to cut down on chocolates, but Pragati Sawhney is of a different tribe.
D
entist-turned-entrepreneur Pragati Sawhney brews chocolate that’s healthy for your teeth. She was inspired to create a socially conscious business during a semester course in Social Entrepreneurship at Columbia Business School while pursuing her Master’s degree. On her return from the US in 2011, she founded Chockriti, a boutique chocolate house in Delhi. Pragati explains the ethos behind her creations. Woman This Month: Did you have formal training as a chocolatier? Pragati Sawhney (PS): I learnt through chocolate tasting tours during travel in Germany, New York and California and did hands workshops at the International Culinary Institute, NY and at Barry Callebaut (glass desserts). WTM: From a nutritional aspect, chocolate is perceived as sinful and the first thing to avoid if you want to lose weight. What’s your take on this? PS: Natural dark chocolate with over 60 percent cocoa is low in sugar and contains

more age-defying antioxidants than goji, acai and other berries. Dark chocolate has the second highest concentration of anti-oxidant rich resveratrol, next to red wine. Flavonoids in dark chocolate regulate blood pressure. Epicatechin is found to reduce heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Pure dark chocolate was found to delay formation of plaque on the teeth, so it actually helps in the prevention of cavities. I use high quality European couvertures with 56-71 percent cacao. Except for a teaspoon of cream for the fillings, no butter, sugar or corn syrup is added. However, ‘compound chocolate’ that’s made with cocoa powder, milk powder and sugar has no real nutritional benefit. So, please check labels before buying! WTM: Some of your flavours such as Shiitake Nori and Wasabi seem quirky. How do your clients respond to these? PS: My clients are people who enjoy world cuisine. In India, people who’re well travelled or foodies use ingredients like wasabi and Kaffir lime at home. Unconventional flavours are getting a good response. Recently, at an
event at Westin Hotel, a lady bought a whole box of the Zaatar Spice Truffles. WTM: What’s the social angle to your venture? PS: I wanted to help less privileged women so they could feel empowered to face their challenges. I found a local NGO which was looking to place its vocational training graduates. I took some women on board and trained them with fair wages. They’ve been working with me for almost a year. WTM: Tell us about your Bahrain connection. To what extent do you cater to the Arab palate? PS: I grew up in Bahrain and later worked there as dental faculty at College of Health Sciences. Arabic herbs and spices inspired me to create flavours such as Orange Blossom, Kahwa, Moroccan Mint, Date Rose and Hibiscus. Diva in the Making After a self-imposed exile of six years, Bahrain-based singer and actress Miraya Varma is back with her goals set in show business.

ahrain’s R&B singer and actress Miraya Varma is far from new in the entertainment business. Miraya began modelling when she was 14 and remained in the spotlight until she moved to the UK as a 19-year-old student. Last year, she marked her comeback with the Bahraini production Dead Sands, where her character ‘Samara’ was praised by critics. Miraya also released her first R&B single last year and bagged the JJ’s Karaoke Idol competition in December. She’ll soon get busy again with a sequel to Dead Sands. With offers from the South Indian film industry in hand, Miraya maintains that music is her first love. Woman This Month (WTM): Tell us about the latest on the work front. Miraya Verma (MV): I’m excited about some overseas developments, but I can't give details at this point. I’m working with a British producer and an international

celebrity for a music video that’ll be shot in Bahrain this year. I also have an IndianArabic music video set to release this year. WTM: What’s been your greatest challenge? MV: Staying away from something that I love most — the stage. My parents wanted me to get professional degrees. I was away for five years, studying in the UK where I nearly gave up on myself. I had gained weight and didn’t care for my appearance or voice. Last year, when I decided to make a comeback, I shed 21 kilos in six months. I’ve done over a 100 photoshoots for fashion and make-up since then. WTM: Who has been your greatest personal inspiration? MV: My mother is an accomplished singer and danseuse. She’s immensely talented and I’ve admired her since early childhood. It was she who got me out of my non-caring phase. She told me: ‘Your talent is what God gave
you, but what you do with it is your gift to God.’ That really stayed with me. WTM: If there’s something you could change about Bahrain’s entertainment scene, what would it be? MV: Entertainers in Bahrain need a lot of support to make their mark internationally. This involves financial backing as well as media exposure. For instance, the music video I was doing required a lot of support and it's been a struggle for me to get that. It would be nice if someone took interest, appreciated and encouraged young talent, so that we can show the world what we're made of. WTM: What's your greatest ambition? MV: I love singing and want to make my mark in music. The only reason I got into the world of modelling and movies is because I want to be noticed as a singer. Music really defines me. In the quest to achieve perfect skin, most women spend their precious time pampering their face and body; often neglecting an important area — the neck!
W
hat women don’t know and tend to forget is that the skin on your neck is really thin and more susceptible to damage. This means that it will wrinkle easily and give away your age, just like your hands do. Weak muscles magnify the flaws of loose skin. Although they may seem odd, practise neck exercises for a good-looking nape. Considering how much you stretch your skin when you move your neck and how exposed it is to pollution and harmful sunrays, you should certainly be paying more attention to it. Do you cleanse your neck as much as often as your face? Do you protect your neck with sunscreen? Here’s how you can begin to embrace V-necks! Special attention For a younger-looking neck, include it in your cleansing and moisturising routine, at least twice a day. During cold and dry weather, apply a smoother product to protect the skin. If your facial cream is meant for oily skin and you prefer a light-weight lotion, get a separate formula for your neck. This area has fewer oil glands and needs more hydration than your face. Anti-ageing products are recommended to avoid lines. Pick a product that delivers moisture; use it daily. Regular skin exfoliation is another way to fight undesirable lines. It also helps the development of new collagen, resulting in a healthier-looking skin. Homogeneous skin Too much exposure to UV rays stimulates pigment-producing cells, causing sun spots. Unfortunately this happens on the delicate neck area as well. To brighten it, use bleaching creams that contain acids or liquorice extracts as they lighten dark blotches. Results may take some time to appear. You need to be careful when you apply these products. The neck is drier and more sensitive; and thus can get irritated easily. The best way to achieve your goal is to consult a dermatologist. Wearing a broad-spectrum sunblock daily and not only when you go sun bathing helps in preventing skin damage. Don’t forget to include the exposed area of the chest as well. The time is now Laser, liposuction and surgery are a last resort if you’ve not found results after trying various creams and non-invasive aesthetic procedures. The best way to fight the ageing process is to prevent it. Thinking about the future of your skin helps you give it a little bit of attention now — when it really matters. One of her pet projects as a social entrepreneur is the biennial International Women’s Conference that brings together inspirational women achievers and leaders across the world. On the eve of the conference, Bhanu didi tells us how the AOL programmes have enriched the happiness quotient in participants and enlivened human values. Woman This Month (WTM): What are the main principles involved in the Art of Living (AOL) practice? Bhanumathi Narasimhan (BN): We aim to bring a positive social transformation through individual blossoming. AOL has powerful tools like sudarshan kriya, a breathing technique that calms the mind and brings about health in every sphere — mind, body and outlook. Meditation is food for the soul. It brings creativity, intuition and clear communication skills. Pranayama (breathing exercises) help to maintain physical heath. All levels of our existence — body, breath, mind and spirit — are taken care of. It’s a holistic approach to healthy and happy living.

WTM: What’s the objective behind the International Women’s Conference 2014? BN: The objective is to create a platform for women to come together and share common interests, achievements and success stories; to find solutions through dialogue and take home ideas from great thinkers. It’s also a bridge between the rural and educated women, how we can learn from each other and how we can appreciate life. It’s not necessary for learning to happen through educated women. A simple woman can teach you about value systems that are eroding today. It’s wonderful to have women from 100 countries under one roof exposed to different cultures. It leaves one with a sense of connectedness and contentment. That’s what our ancient seers spoke of — the one world family. Women from diverse backgrounds have the same aspirations, ambitions and concerns. One gets different perspectives to a challenge as solutions come from so many angles. It is an educative experience. WTM: Women are increasingly stressed as they juggle careers alongside duties towards their families. What’s your advice for career women? BN: We have to get our act together. As intelligent women, we need to manage our mind. A career woman is always looking outside to control situations and to achieve, but she seldom looks at managing her own mind, which is responsible for controlling situations outside. That’s why she needs to be more harmonious in coming to terms with herself. My experience has been that spirituality is the only answer to this. A few moments of quietude and mindfulness, focusing on one’s breath and some exercises will help career womento be stress-free. If you want to build higher, you have to dig deep. The deeper and stronger the foundation, the higher the building. Like an arrow that has to be pulled back before shooting, a few moments of focusing within can help you be successful in your career outside. At the end www.womanthismonth.com

WTM: There’s a lot of wisdom in books and many scriptures provide the secret to liberation. Is it necessary then to have a living guru? BN: You’re right. Libraries can provide us with information, but only a living master who walks the talk can put us on the path of experiential and practical wisdom. I’ve read many books, gathered much information and appreciated all of it, but it was only when I found my master that I was able to put scriptures into practice. When you have a living master, it enhances your belief and deepens your understanding. WTM: Have you considered making AOL techniques accessible to everyone through either lowering course fees or making enrolment free? BN: Most certainly. In fact, we have more free courses than paid courses. All the paid courses help provide free courses for the rural communities, prisoners and slums. Many of our service projects are supported by the contributions received from the AOL programmes. WTM: What does the term ‘women’s empowerment’ mean to you? BN: Women’s empowerment doesn’t necessarily mean only economic independence. It’s about having a mind that’s courageous, contented and comfortable. An

empowered woman communicates effectively and has the zeal to work not only for herself, but for the progress of the community and society. Empowerment extends from oneself to others. The feeling of empowerment comes from the very fact that you feel useful to yourself and to others. WTM: Tell us about your project for educating the girl child in rural India. BN: This project was started by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and spearheaded by my father. I’ve continued this and we have 383 AOL free schools to be proud of, enrolling over 35,000 children. Everything is taken care of including transportation, school uniforms, supplies and books. Around 51 percent of the students are girls. Although everyone has the right to get educated, we’ve laid more emphasis on girls because they really need it in rural areas. We have free schools in 19 states of India, supported by well-wishers and volunteers. WTM: Can women really be the agents of change in today’s society? BN: Of course. I’d say that we have to take the power in our hands and move ahead for a harmonious and happy society. It’s our responsibility to move away from stress and violence and make a positive effort towards happiness, health and harmony. WTM: What’s the one sure sign of spiritual progress? Understanding meditation Our expert: Ansuya Sunku, director, Bahrain Meditation Centre for Self Development Meditation is the deep relaxation of the mind. It is creating and feeling positive thoughts for yourself and others. It is not just a technique, but also a way of life. It prepares your mind to think in a certain way, which with practice comes naturally in one’s daily life. “The original way in which the spiritual being thinks is positive. Meditation takes you back to your normal state of positivism,” says Ansuya. The mind is the tool for experiencing peace, but until the mind is calm, peace is fleeting. With meditation the mind becomes so calm and serene that you are thinking only positive thoughts; there is no margin for negativity. The whole idea is that with consistent effort, the benefits of meditation are experienced throughout the day. Ansuya points out that consistency, practice and depth are essential in meditation to benefit from it. Meditation is not about thinking, but experiencing. It does not require any specific posture. Comfortable seating and stillness of the body allows the mind to just be, to settle. And then you can take your mind to any kind of positive experience you want [DASH] peace, joy or love. Having nothing to do with religion, meditation allows one to gain spiritual development and understand one’s religion more closely. It enables the good in each and every one of us to manifest. Well, isn’t the world in dire need of this? The how and why of meditation Our expert: Weam Zabar, founder, Namaste Bahrain Yoga master, Weam says that the mind is generally active, agitated and overused. A lot of mental energy is wasted on unnecessary thoughts. Meditation does not control, but diverts the mind from the past, anxiety or tension. It stills the mind to live in the present moment. “Meditation involves focusing on the breath, a www.womanthismonth.com
candle or a chant to redirect the mind from assorted thoughts to just focusing it on a spot. That alone is beneficial as you begin to understand the tendencies of your own mind, like fear, anxiety or perpetually planning for the future. It allows you to watch how your mind works and isolates your thoughts from yourself,” says Weam. So even while not meditating, you are able to recognise your thoughts clearly and then decide whether and how you want to react to them, instead of reacting on autopilot all the time. Meditation is a state of consciousness, which has a lot of healing benefits on the mental, physical and emotional self. “It helps you recognise your identity as a soul rather than as a body. It gets you closer to divinity, to your untainted soul,” she says. Everybody can meditate, although it may be
difficult at first to still a jumping mind. Let thoughts come to you and pass as you return to your point of concentration. As a result, one can filter one’s thoughts, which are conditioned with perception and background. “Once you recognise the rubbish you are carrying within, you can decide what to keep and what to drop,” says Weam. Meditation is best done at sunrise or sunset, but with time, you ultimately live your meditation. Your state is always that of focused relaxation, and contentment, like there’s nothing missing. You actually ‘live in the moment’. There are many methods to meditate, such as focusing on chants, a candle, a sound or the breath. Some even do walking meditation. The method is different for everyone, but the ultimate goal is the same. February 2014

Meditation is food for the soul and a nourished soul can maintain harmonious relationships with the spouse, children, friends and superiors. She believes that the mind can be controlled through our breath. Breathing can still a wandering mind to go into the ‘wow’ state of meditation. If only we would pay more attention to our breathing, taking long, deep breaths instead of short, shallow ones. “Deep down, we are all brilliant diamonds. But we allow dust to settle on our inner diamond with years of accumulated stress, grudges and negativity,” she says. Meditation allows you to cleanse the soul and release these mental and emotional toxins through correct breathing. In a calm state of mind, one can see the situation as is, assess it and then take the right decision in any relationship. Parents can greatly benefit from meditation while tackling inevitable problems that arise with nurturing children and the strain of daily routine. Sincere meditation ensures boundless energy to deal with people, situations and never-ending tasks with a smile, making parenting a more joyful journey. Children can easily get into a meditative state due to their innocence and purity. It helps concentration and memory, and focuses their misdirected energies, teaching them to listen to their inner voice in this confusing world of right and wrong. They absorb wisdom and knowledge better. “The best thing a parent can do is to sow the seeds of meditation in a child’s mind,” Jayashree notes. Prison inmates, terrorists and drug addicts have taken up the path of love after experiencing the miracle of meditation. Prostitutes, labourers and the underprivileged have been made happier souls through meditation. With meditation the mind is more accepting and free to think higher thoughts, like our responsibilities, role in society and how we can make the world a better place. Understanding Ultrasound Scans
Q: When should an ultrasound be done during pregnancy? What is its purpose in each stage? A: There are few stages in pregnancy when an ultrasound should be done. These are: • Very early pregnancy (6-7 weeks): This is essential for documentation of viability and gestational age, but more importantly for the assessment of the continuity of pregnancy. • At 12 -14 weeks: This is called the genetic ultrasound. At this stage, the ‘nuchal thickness’ is measured, which can give us information on whether the baby is chromosomally normal or not. Other foetal parameters that are evaluated are the nasal bone, the ductus venosus and the maxillary length. This is one of the most important scans for a pregnant woman. • 20-22 weeks: By this time, the foetus is well developed and most of its organs, from head to toe, can be seen and examined for possible anomalies. • 28-36 weeks: This exam will evaluate the foetal growth. Q: Do ultrasound scans have side effects? Should I avoid unnecessary ultrasounds? A: Ultrasound scans have been shown to be free of foetal or maternal side effects. It has also shown that even when done routinely and for no medical reasons, it can detect many abnormalities, which if left undetected could result in catastrophic effects on the mother or the foetus.

Although many women are aware that an ultrasound is a routine part of pregnancy check-ups, very few know its frequency, results and significance. Dr Roland Moawad, consultant obstetrics and gynaecology and foetal medicine at Royal Bahrain Hospital sheds light on the matter.
After more than 60 years of use, the ultrasound has never been associated with any untoward effects for the mother or the foetus. Some authorities in various parts of the world are quite opposed to the unnecessary ultrasound as a majority of pregnant women expect to see their foetus on every prenatal visit. This practice, however, has never been reported to cause any harm. High risk pregnancies that may cause a significant risk to the foetus, or even the mother, may benefit tremendously by frequent ultrasound scans. Q: What is the importance of recent ultrasound techniques, such as vaginal ultrasound, 4D ultrasound and Doppler? A: Vaginal ultrasound is sometimes the nightmare of pregnant women. However, it is becoming increasingly obvious that it is the only technique to make certain very through
this procedure. The most important aspect that pregnant women should understand is that vaginal ultrasound is extremely safe in pregnancy, and will, in no way, interfere in the foetal development. Since the development of 4D ultrasound, there is not a single pregnant woman who does not wish to see her baby in 4D or ‘a colour ultrasound’. There is no doubt that these pictures can be breathtaking. Parents should understand that results do not depend on the operator, but on the position of the foetus. Other techniques, such as Doppler, colour Doppler and biophysical profiles, are certainly essential in management and evaluation of high risk pregnancies. Treating Kidney Failure The BSH team at the course
There has been an increase in the prevalence of end stage renal disease globally. We speak to an expert in nephrology about haemodialysis and its relevance.
I
t is well documented that end stage renal disease patients are the highest in morbidity and mortality among the medical population. Haemodialysis is the most common method used to treat advanced and permanent kidney failure. Even with better procedures and equipment in recent days, it is still a complicated therapy that requires the coordinated effort of your whole healthcare team, including your nephrologist, dialysis nurse, dialysis technician and dietician. Dr Jafar Al-Said, nephrology and internal medicine consultant at Bahrain Specialist Hospital, gives us a better idea about haemodialysis. WTM: What is the role of haemodialysis in end stage renal disease? Dr Jafar: There are two kinds of dialysis. The first is haemodialysis, in which the blood is pumped out of the patient's body to an artificial kidney machine and returned to the patient's body by tubes that are connected to the machine. The second is peritoneal dialysis, in which the patient's abdominal lining acts as a natural filter. Wastes are taken out by means of a cleansing fluid called dialysate, which is washed out of the body. Haemodialysis is the most common modality of renal replacement therapy. In 2011 in

United States alone, 101,683 end stage renal disease patients started haemodialysis while only 7,323 were put on peritoneal dialysis. The vascular access for about 80 percent of the patients was a haemodialysis catheter. Where only 16.8 percent had a functional fistula. WTM: What are the statistics for patients here in the Kingdom? Dr Jafar: Unfortunately representative statistic data from our region is lacking. We have published a statistical analysis on the population that had undergone haemodialysis in Bahrain Specialist Hospital for the past nine years. The vascular haemodialysis catheter was used in 60 percent of the cases. Of all the haemodialysis patients, 19 percent had fistula. WTM: What is the contribution of Bahrain Specialist Hospital to dialyses? Dr Jafar: From the start of our haemodialysis service over 10 years ago at Bahrain Specialist Hospital, we have spent great effort to reduce the medical morbidity and mortality for renal disease patients. The highly dedicated, qualified and updated medical team are aiming at delivering the highest quality of treatment and patient care. Our results from the infection control protocol are among the best all over the
world. The favourable outcome obtained in implementing strict infection control was published and presented in different international conferences and journals. Furthermore, as part of our responsibility toward the community and the patients with end stage renal disease, we started a biannual haemodialysis training course for physicians as well as nursing staff. WTM: Tell us more about the haemodialysis training course. Dr Jafar: The aim of this programme is to share the continuous medical education and provide the team serving haemodialysis patients in Bahrain with the most updated medical knowledge. We are distributing and sharing our experience with all the haemodialysis centres to improve the patient care. These training courses, due to their high educational and scientific value, were accredited by the American Association of Continuing Medical Education. The last training session that was held in December 2013 addressed vascular access for haemodialysis patients and its complications. The next course will be held in May 2014. This year I have put together a three-course meal which is both quick and easy. This can be cooked and served direct from the dishes they are cooked in, reducing dishes to be cleaned and adding to the romance and rustic approach of it all. The seafood starter can be enjoyed as the baby hammour cooks to perfection, allowing you to both relax and enjoy each others company. The chocolate coffee granita can be made a day or two in advance and hidden away in the freezer and served at the last minute.
750g fresh mussels 25g butter 1/2 white onion, finely diced 150g fresh calamari 150g fresh scallops 6 rashers beef or turkey bacon, chopped into small pieces 2 small leeks, sliced diagonally 1 tspn thyme sprigs 250ml apple juice

STEAMED SEAFOOD WITH LEEKS AND HERBS • Scrub and de-beard the mussels. • Heat the butter in a large saucepan and gently fry the finely chopped onion. • Add the bacon pieces, frying for three-four minutes until it starts to brown. • Add the leeks, thyme, calamari and scallops. Cover with lid and sweat everything together for four-five minutes until soft.
• Turn the heat up. Add the mussels and apple juice. Cover and cook for four-five minutes, shaking the pan occasionally, until the mussels have opened. • Discard any mussels that don’t open. Bring the saucepan straight to the table for a rustic approach and serve with crusty bread to soak up the juices. www.womanthismonth.com
CHOCOLATE COFFEE GRANITA 200g 50g 500ml 50g 1 tspn
sugar cocoa powder strong coffee dark chocolate, finely chopped vanilla extract
• Bring the coffee to the boil in a medium saucepan. • Whisk in the sugar and cocoa and simmer, uncovered, for five minutes, whisking occasionally. • Remove from the heat and stir in the chocolate and vanilla until the chocolate has melted. • Cool the mixture, then put in the fridge overnight. • Make the granita in a glass dish, preferably bowl-shaped, and freeze until frozen three to four centimetres from the edge. • Whisk to break down the ice crystals, then freeze again for one hour more. • Whisk and freeze again, then leave until completely frozen. • Before serving, break the ice crystals into small pieces and serve into glasses or dishes. • Serve with a dollop of sweetened whipped cream.
400g ROAST small potatoes WHOLE BABY HAMMOUR 40g whole black olives, pitted 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 2 tbspns parsley, roughly chopped 2 tbspns olive oil 1 lemon zest 1 lemon, sliced thinly 1 (about 400g-500g) whole hammour, cleaned, head on 250ml apple juice to taste salt to taste black pepper, freshly cracked • Heat oven to 220°C. • Cook the potatoes in boiling water for about 10 minutes. Cut into thick slices, then cool. • In a bowl, toss the potatoes with the olives, garlic, half the chopped parsley, half the olive oil, the lemon zest, salt and pepper. Tip this mix over the bottom of a large ceramic baking dish. • Season the inside and outside of the hammour with salt and pepper. Place the lemon slices into the cavity of the fish. Lay the fish on top of the potatoes and drizzle with the rest of the olive oil. Bake for 25 minutes. • Pour the apple juice over the fish and other ingredients and return to the oven for 10 minutes more until the potatoes have browned and the fish is cooked. • Remove the dish from the oven, scatter with remaining parsley and bring the dish to the table. • Serve hot with a salad and the sour cream as a dip. www.womanthismonth.com

Despite the rise of campaigns that aim to curb premature sexualisation of children, the younger generation continues to be influenced by what the media wants them to believe. Where do the media draw the line when it comes to selling a product? 60 February 2014

ro-active parents across the globe have raised concerns about the commercialisation and the sexualisation of children. The claim is that a shield of protection is needed to ensure that children are not bombarded with inappropriate images and content. This is not just a concern on the web through social media and on-line purchasing, it is also evident implicitly and often explicitly through services and goods, such as toys and clothes that are advertised with children and young people as their target market. It is felt that children should be protected from advertising, marketing and media content that expose them to sexual images or excessive pressure to consume. Meanwhile, slogans on children’s clothes, padded bras advertised for young girls aged as young as seven and Playboy logos on pencil cases appear to be in a different category of seriousness as compared to young girls playing with make-up, ‘violent’ games or boys walking around with their jeans worn way below the waist. ‘inappropriate for their age’? Both are subjective terms that mean different things depending on where you live in the world, what school you go to and which pop stars, if any, you like. There is no black and white area. Yet there appears to be a consensus on what is wrong — or is there? Has the media gone too far? Is capitalism more at play than values in progressive societies or has being politically correct made us all crazy? We are clearly swayed by our own cultural and other values. Most want their children to enjoy childhood and be safe. Research shows that, on the whole, parents see childhood as a time where innocence is present.
What they don’t see A poll for the Chartered Institute of Marketing in the UK said that the most common concern for parents is ‘inappropriate’ advertising during children’s television shows. More than 40 percent of parents are worried about the development of adult products for children, such as t-shirts with sexualised slogans, encouraging them to be materialistic and inappropriate language in
mainstream songs. Four out of 10 parents said they were concerned about marketing directed at children via Facebook. These concerns may be valid; in fact, marketing is only part of it. Placement of products and product design or development is a major concern as well as the rationale for the products in the first place. It may be that the culmination of all these facets are jeopardising parents’ relationships with their children and encouraging them to think adult thoughts too soon. Reputations may be tarnished along the way. Children, on the other hand, have expressed conflict or rebellion as a normal stage of development, where purchasing choice is an expression of their individuality and power. In the book So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualised Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids, Levin and Kilbourne explain how children today are being prematurely induced into inappropriate forms of sexual behaviour, particularly as a result of their February 2014

exposure to media and commercial marketing. The concern here relates partly to children’s viewing of media material designed for an older audience (such as music videos) and to material explicitly targeting them (such as teen magazines, clothing and toys). Although the primary focus is on girls, viewed as being preoccupied with the need to appear sexually attractive at a younger age, material is also believed to affect boys’ attitudes towards girls and their own selfimage. The authors argue that the sexualisation of childhood has a range of damaging consequences for children’s mental and physical health. In extreme situations, they believe this can lead to depression and suicide, eating disorders and abuse, where children are victims and parents are sometimes powerless. The solution Talk to your children and share your views on right and wrong from an early age. Keep such conversations alive to ensure full transparency. Beaware of the type of marketing that is out there, whilst also knowing where your child spends his or her time and money both on and off line. If companies make a stance and embrace corporate social responsibility by making appropriate decisions when developing products and services for children, this certainly can help avoid parents, schools, agencies, societies, regulators and governments from complaining. Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence thinks it should be illegal to call someone fat on TV. According to her, media needs to take responsibility for the effect that it has on the younger generation. Shocking statistics A study by University College London has found that around 10 percent of 13-year-old girls are terrified about putting on weight. Their findings, in the Journal of Adolescent Health, came from interviews with the parents of 7,082 13-year-olds. Nearly 12 percent of girls and five percent of boys were terrified by the thought of getting fat. Fifty-two percent of girls and a third of the boys said they were a little worried about gaining weight. The ratio of those distressed by their body shape was one for every three girls and one for every four boys. g

To Scan or Not To Scan by DR JINAN DARWISH
Many parents feel they haven’t been provided adequate care if the doctor doesn’t prescribe a scan of any kind. We examine the significance and side effects of these procedures.
B
eing able to peer into the human body without making a single incision is unquestionably a key advancement of modern medicine. However, doctors and patients have been taking complete advantage of the latest techniques to scan internal organs as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imagining (MRI), ultrasound and other scans are easily available. The progress in medicine When paediatric radiology was in its infancy 113 years ago, children who required an x-ray were often sedated with ether to keep them restrained for lengthy exposure times of 15 seconds or more. Luckily, the dawn of faster film, computerised equipment and new methods of imaging has dramatically reduced the health risks for children undergoing diagnostic radiographic examinations. Children have greater amounts of growth and reproduction cells, which are more sensitive to radiation. Exposure to ionising radiation may yield cell damage due to direct or indirect action of the radiation over DNA strands, which could produce genetic mutations that can cause cancer. Therefore it is imperative for these procedures to be constantly regulated and optimised to decrease the likelihood of getting the disease.

The after effects Not only are children’s developing tissues more vulnerable to radiation’s effects, but they have more years to live after their exposure, which surges their chances of developing cancers related to the radiation they received. Children were found to be more sensitive than adults for the development of 25 percent of tumour types including leukaemia, and thyroid, brain and breast cancer. Between 1996 and 2010, according to a study published in 2012, the use of CT scans nearly tripled, from 52 scans per 1,000 patients to 149 scans per 1,000 patients. Increased reliance on the scans could drive a slight bump in cancer risk from CT. Those who were scanned had a 24 percent greater risk of cancer than those who did not receive them, with the risk increasing by 16 percent for each additional CT. The risk was highest for children who received scans before age five. They showed a 35 percent increased chance of developing a cancer during the study period than those who
weren’t scanned at this age. Brain cancers were the most common among youngsters who had the scans. Two sides of a scan One in 50 children benefited from a head CT, compared to the one in 10,000 who might develop brain cancer or leukaemia from the same scan, according to calculations in the latest study. People need to realise that there is a 200-fold difference between the benefit of a scan and its risk. Therefore, concerns about radiation exposure are understandable. Questions by patients and their families should be encouraged. It is the responsibility of healthcare professionals to ensure if each scan is necessary. It is the responsibility of radiology personnel to ensure that radiation risk is minimised by using the correct technique. Parents will appreciate the relative safety of x-rays when it is explained that the amount of background radiation the child is exposed to in a year is roughly equivalent to more than 200 chest x-rays. www.womanthismonth.com

How do you involve young people in labour-intensive welfare projects? Make it fun and turn it into a competition!
A
yadi Relief Organisation is relatively new in the social welfare field in Bahrain. However, they’ve captured the imagination of the Kingdom’s youth with their home renovation project. Designed as a competition, the project is termed Baitkum Baitna, which in Arabic translates as ‘your house is our house’. “As youth, we want to leave our mark in Bahrain. Hence, we chose this project to adopt and renovate old and dilapidated homes, which don’t fall under the purview of the Ministry of Housing,” says Hala Ali, head of projects. Four teams are picked from a pool of applicants and team members have to rebuild, paint and furnish the home allotted to them within a month. Team members are encouraged to work as much as possible with their own hands for a closer involvement with the homes and families. The first three editions of Baitkum Baitna in 2013 saw the renovation of 12 houses. “Our aim is to build motivation in youth

and engage them in something worthwhile. In order to ensure that they do the tasks with passion and perfection, we decided to turn it into a competition,” says Nisreen Al Maowdah, head of events. Volunteers are clubbed into four teams, each having 12 members. The team is provided a kit that comprises images of the house and BD500 in cash. They are allowed to raise funds independently through donations or sponsorship as each house entails an expenditure of BD3,000 to 7,000. Every team is allotted an engineer and supervisor, whose expertise they can count on. They’re also provided contact details of painters, contractors and building material suppliers, who they might need to consult in course of the renovation. There is an orientation day when the teams get an overview of the work before they begin. “Throughout the month there are surprise elements in the competition, wherein we provide teams with things they badly want,
such as an air conditioner or a sofa set. It turns into a sort of treasure hunt, where volunteers are rushing all over Bahrain to collect the merchandise that will beautify the house further,” says Hala. Volunteers have even driven down to Saudi Arabia to buy furniture for their house in order to save money. At the end of four weeks, judges visit the renovated homes and rate the teams on seven criteria — creativity, interior design, money management, media savvy factors, perfectionism in work, team work and best outstanding individual effort. Such has been the popularity of the project, which has received television coverage in Bahrain, that there’s now a waiting list of volunteers for the second edition of Baitkum Baitna in 2014. There will be three editions of the project this year, renovating 12 homes in all. WTM: Why did you choose to study at University of Strathclyde? Dr Zahra: I was looking for a part-time course in management while working at American Mission Hospital as the chief of dental services. I had asked the HR manager at the time, Dr Graham Orme, about good UK-based MBA programmes. University of Strathclyde was his first choice. It is among the top MBA programmes and I did not need to look anywhere else. I knew I had chosen a good career path. WTM: How has studying at University of Strathclyde altered your future? Dr Zahra: As a healthcare professional, we have always been trained to look at facts and not make assumptions, ie evidence-based dentistry. The MBA programme has taught me to think outside the box and change the way I think. It has given me a broader perspective of the way I view things. I wanted an MBA degree to assist me in my position as a manager. Although it isn’t unique to start a private practice, I learned from Strathclyde’s MBA programme how to design my practice to make it distinct from others; I achieved it successfully. The low seating position just ahead of the rear axle gives the driver and passenger a particularly intense experience of the longitudinal and lateral forces working on the rear wheels. This sense of being ‘part of the car’ also allows the driver to grade the amount of power he or she is feeding through the rear axle with sensitivity and precision. That’s the recipe for the roadster feeling, BMW-style. The hardtop roof also blends seamlessly into the car’s form. space inside the car. Once opened, the two roof elements are accommodated, one on top of the other, in a compact package inside the Roadster’s roadhugging rear. The optional BMW Individual hardtop — available in the two contrast colours Black non-metallic and Glacier Silver metallic — provides a feast for the eyes when the roof is closed. Striking touches A total of 11 external paint finishes are available for the new BMW Z4, including the new Mineral Grey metallic, Glacier Silver metallic and Valencia Orange metallic, which can only be ordered together with the Design Pure Traction option. This new equipment package lends the Roadster an extremely lively aura. Another exclusive element of the Design Pure Traction package is the metal weave trim strip, which can be combined with further decorative elements in high-gloss black for the door openers and the gearshift or selector lever. New interior additions to standard specification include high-gloss black
surrounds for the central air vents and the iDrive control system’s folding Control Display, which comes as part of the optional Professional navigation system. Elsewhere, exquisite Fineline Anthracite wood has been added to the selection of interior trim strips available as an option for the new BMW Z4. BMW TwinPower Turbo technology Customers can choose from three fourcylinder and two six-cylinder powerplants. Their most significant shared feature is BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, which ensures an exceptionally effective balance between driving pleasure and fuel consumption throughout the output range. In addition, all four-cylinder variants of the new BMW Z4 already meet the stipulations of the EU6 exhaust emissions standard. Drivers can use the standard-fitted Driving Experience Control switch to select a configuration to suit the situation at hand and satisfy personal preferences. When did romance start feel like entrapment inside a lead-lined box?
T
here I was driving my car. Life was great. Romance was blooming and the day was as good as any. I had, just hours earlier, heard the words I had longed for, out loud, by the one who has my heart. The words ‘I love you’ had been reciprocated, verbalised and put out there into the universe for the heavens to hear. On leaving home, I had sent a text merely stating how nice it was to hear her voice. And then the day went grey. It was in the form of a text received from her: There’s a thin line between being nice and being truthful. Honesty I adore, but this truth hurt! The message surely pushed Humpty Dumpty off the ledge and shattered the already cracked outer shell. But as painful as those words were to read, I appreciated them and understood them too. My instant reaction was one of disbelief and in the seconds following, I may have attempted road rage on unsuspecting public. The more I thought about her text, I truly just felt like Schrödinger’s cat. The relationship was my lead-lined box; truthfulness and being nice were the radioactive vial and the poison within this relationship. Until I could see myself from the outside, I was trapped — caught between possible never-ending marital bliss and terminal disintegration. What did I want — the truth or niceness? And was reality either of them? Are we not all trapped inside relationships? Do we not all sometimes err on the side of being nice to avoid a fight, hurt feelings or a broken heart? When did ‘I love you’ become so ambiguous? Life lessons are truly daunting. When I was a child, they taught us to cut out red cardboard hearts, fill in the words ‘be mine’ and hand them out to the girl you liked for Valentine’s Day. I wish life had remained so ‘cut and paste’ simple. Sadly the premise of such innocence seems naive and fatally flawed now that I am older. Life truly is a continuing learning curve. So, you’ve pampered yourself silly this month. You’ve bought lavish presents for loved ones. But the best things bestowed upon us are free. What does your thank you note to Mother Nature look like?
I
’ll leave the statistics to the textbooks. But clearly, it’s time to wake up and smell the greenhouse gases (going by the signs, blooming roses will probably be an extinct phenomenon). We know the drill. We know we should take more trips to the recycle bin. All that wrapping paper and bulky packaging shouldn’t be cluttering the landfills. We also know that the toxins from that giant shopping bag toting around one miniscule item will probably kill exotic marine life your offspring will probably never witness. But complacency and other ‘more important’ factors keep us from empathising with Planet Earth. As a selfish, spoilt species, we care more that our homes are cool when we return after a day’s work. Never mind that it is a criminal waste of precious energy when our natural resources are fast depleting. The thing is, we want more, more and then some more. We want new gizmos when existing ones perfectly serve the purpose. We want six polythene bags when two will suffice. We want all the lights on when what’s needed is an efficient reading lamp. Do we need them? Probably not! All it takes is a little prudence. Why not use the dryer only when the sun plays truant? Why do you need a bunch of tissues to dry two hands? Take a nanosecond to tighten that dripping tap. Combine two small loads of laundry to run one wash load. If each one of us resolves to reduce our waste, reuse our things and recycle our trash, we won’t be leaving behind an ugly carbon footprint, but instead a magical world for others to marvel at — a world with its wonders intact. Start with yourself and spread the awareness — to your kids, their friends and even the house help. Believe in the power of the collective. Let’s promise today to ensure a wondrous tomorrow. It’s a commitment we’ll be making to our future generations and to theirs.
