EDITOR’S NOTE

W

elcome to the February edition which, of course, is all about romance. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we’ve come up with some of the best dining offers in town as well as great gift ideas to keep the man in your life happy. If you don’t fancy the usual candlelit dinner for two, check out our Dates With a Difference pages, I’m sure you’ll find something to tickle your fancy – I was quite taken with some of the ideas myself and might just have to give them a try. Staying in on the big night? We’ve also got that covered, stock up on popcorn and settle in for an evening of slushy movies from our Top Ten selection. This month, as well as hearing about artist Yusra Ahmed’s journey from Yemen to Bahrain, I got to meet some very special women. Hannah Al Khalifa, Rana Al Alawi and Mariam Turki are the iron ladies who will be representing Bahrain at this year’s Ironman 70.3 World Championships in the USA. I was in awe of the dedication that took them around the 70-plus mile course, which they finished with smiles on their faces! And I even left our chat fired up to sign on for a super sprint triathlon. It’s nothing like the crazy distance these women covered but the fact that a smoker who does virtually no exercise at all would even consider it, shows just how inspirational these girls are. Training starts this weekend, I’ll let you know how I get on. Elsewhere this month, Puja Tiwari takes us on a journey to discover some extreme vacation ideas, volcano sandboarding in Nicaragua anyone? And Behnaz Sanjana casts some light on the tricky subject of infertility while columnist Ouiam opens her heart about her own recent experience of miscarriage. There’s also our regular round-up of fashion and beauty news and if you need inspiration for what to wear on your next date night, check out the red carpet styles in the Get the Look section.

I want to say a big thank you for the advert you regularly carry for Women’s Crisis Care International. I spotted it last month and, within days, a friend was badly in need of help. I was able to point her in the right direction and she cannot speak highly enough of the people she encountered. She had been assaulted and was so thankful to have someone on her side, right the way through to the court appearance. This is an invaluable service and I would urge everyone to get behind it in any way they can. Thanks again WTM for letting us know about it. Name supplied.

For anyone who's not been paying attention, it's the day after Donald Trump will be sworn in as president. Organisers of the march say they want to greet Trump's presidency by making a statement. "The Women's March on Washington will send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world that women's rights are human rights," the march's mission statement reads. "We stand together, recognising that defending the most marginalised among us is defending all of us." UNISEX HITS THE RUNWAY

Men and women took to the catwalks together at London Fashion Week in a move that was backed by a number of fashion mavens including Vivienne Westwood. The 75-year-old style icon said the dual approach was a response to the unisex reality of fashion, telling AFP: "My very first fashion shows were always men and women. It's particularly unisex now because this time you've got lots of men in dresses. You've seen women for a hundred years in trousers but it's all switched around equally now."

TED’S IN TOWN

Stock up on your faves from designer Ted Baker at the newly-launched store at City Centre Bahrain. The new shop stocks the designer’s men’s and women’s wear as well as accessories.

A CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK

Regional designers were out in force for the 2017 Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles. It seems the A List has discovered what women in the Gulf, and wider region, have long known, you can’t beat a bit of homegrown talent. And, for this purpose, as well as its general fabness, we’re adopting Lebanon as our own! From Kristen Wiig and Emily Ratajkowski in Reem Acra to the absolute joy of Lily Collins in delicate, fairytale blush pink from Zuhair Murad, Lebanese designers were everywhere. Want to see what they were up to? Then check out their red carpet looks as well as those from Georges Chakra, Elie Saab and Rani Zakhem.

London Fashion Week saw the debut of yet another celebuspawn on the catwalk. Following in the footsteps of Romeo Beckham, Rafferty Law and an assortment of Jaggers, Lennon Gallagher, whose dad is rock royalty Liam, cut a familiar figure sporting bushy eyebrows and a parka jacket on the runway for Topman Designs. His famous father took to Twitter to congratulate him.

Check out what’s available online then head to the mall with an idea in your head of what you want. SHORT A ND S W E ET Going glam doesn’t have to mean a long dress. This short, sparkly creation certainly commands the spotlight all by itself. When you’re wearing a statement piece like this, keep accessories to a minimum though, in our opinion, a girl is never overdressed in diamonds. Team your shortie stunner with boots and a biker but go for heels and a well-shaped, lighter version of the jacket to channel your inner rebel without overshadowing the frock. Finish the look with a statement clutch. www.womanthismonth.com

N O DR ESS R EQ U IR ED Up the oomph factor with head-to-toe sequins. This is a look that only the most confident girls can pull off, thanks to the plunging neckline. If you want to give it a try but have larger boobs, go for a sheer net insert or choose a slightly more demure jumpsuit to suit your style. Team it with a boyfriendstyle tux and an equally impressive box bag for added edge. Complete the look with simple but stylish jewellery – let the sequins do the talking. February 2017

PEOPLE | interview

Iron Ladies What makes someone want to travel 70plus miles under their own steam? Liz O’Reilly met the Bahraini stars of the most recent Ironman 70.3 who will be representing their country at the coming world championships in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in September. Bahraini finishers, from left, Hannah, Rana and Mariam with their trophies and, below, the three women with coach Greer

H

annah Al Khalifa, 26, was the first Bahraini woman past the post. Born to a Bahraini father and a Scottish mother, she was living in London and moved to the island in September 2015, which is when she took up competition seriously. A freelancer in architectural design, she says: “I’ve always been very sporty and just decided to give it a go. I was the fifth Bahraini woman to finish last year; this year I was first!” Rana Al Alawi, 24, is the baby of the bunch and was the second Bahraini woman finisher. A lawyer working with Batelco, this was her first Ironman. She says: “I was never sporty at school; in fact I broke my hand playing volleyball. But I always felt happy when I was running.” Her first proper race was the November 2015 Cross Island and she got her triathlon bike for her birthday in April 2016. Mariam Turki, 32, took part in last year’s event but only did the cycling leg. The mum of two, who works in banking, says: “I was crying on the bike and didn’t think I would make it, but I did. Afterwards I thought ‘That’s not enough, I want to do the whole thing now!'” She started training in March last year and also got her bike for her birthday. Mariam was

22

the fourth Bahraini woman to complete the race. So what is Ironman? It’s a multi-discipline race in which competitors, or teams, swim 1.9km, cycle 90km and run 21.1km; the overall distance is 70.3 miles – a half Ironman. As a way of promoting the sport, HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, himself a keen triathlete and Ironman competitor, announced that he would pay for the first five Bahraini men and first five women to attend the world championships. But really, this sounds HARD! Why would anyone want to put themself through months of brutal training and seriously taxing competition? Rana explains: “I heard about it through Sarah Al-Thawadi [in fact they all did]; she was second last year but was injured and couldn’t compete this year. She told me about the benefits of Ironman training. You might think of it as a commitment, but it’s a lifestyle. It gives you more discipline and not just in your training but in all areas of your life, for example at work. And it’s sociable; you can train with a group or by yourself; the community is very supportive.” Mariam adds: “After I gave birth to my second

child, I was desperate to lose weight. My uncle has a running group called the Happy Team and I asked if I could join them; that’s when I heard about triathlon. I decided, if I was going to do it I wanted to train properly so I contacted Greer [Sansom], who trains us all and then I met these girls, who make training fun.” “When we first rode together, I couldn’t keep up, all I could see was Mariam looking behind her to see where I was,” says Rana. “I couldn’t even keep up with the warm-up!” confesses Hannah. Yet, they all went on to not only complete the www.womanthismonth.com

race but to triumph. But what of the challenges along the way? Mariam says: “People think they can’t do it, but it’s very doable. I must admit, I found it a bit difficult at first, because of our culture, to wear the tri suit – it’s like a swimsuit with legs. But there was a lot of encouragement, from my uncles and others, and now I don’t feel uncomfortable at all. “Another thing to say is that, for triathlon, you have to have a strong mind.” Hannah agrees, adding: “Absolutely, it is all mental.” Mariam continues: “One of the main challenges is the cycling because drivers here don’t think you should be on the road.” “There have been so many times I wished I had a paintball gun on the front of my bike,” says

Hannah. “There’s also a lack of good places to swim in open water. You need a lifeguard; I’m always worried about getting cramp and getting washed out.” “There’s also dirt and weird stuff in the water!” continues Rana. But all three women are obviously in love with their sport and quick to pay tribute to HH

Shaikh Nasser who has opened a 10km cycle loop at his stables to give riders a safe place to train. And, after a few weeks' break following the December competition, they are very much back in training and looking forward to Tennessee. Hannah says: “It’s only for those who have previously qualified and

there will be a march of nations, so we’ll be flying the flag for Bahrain. It’s very exciting and the Ironman guys love us. I think it's because they love Bahrain as they know the people here love the sport.” In the meantime, though, Mariam is, so far, the only GCC female registered to participate in the Dubai Ironman 70.3. She just can’t get enough! And all three are keen for others to get involved in the sport. Rana says: “I would really like to encourage everyone to take part especially Bahraini girls. We want to have healthy competition.” “It’s a great community,” adds Hannah. “Everyone is really helpful to each other. If someone is struggling at the start of a race, you hand over your energy gel to help them get through.”

A Word From the Coach All three iron ladies credit trainer Greer Sansom with their success. The native Australian says: “I arrived in Bahrain to work in my profession as a graphic designer but the triathlon coaching is consuming more and more of my day. I see great potential to get more people training properly – it’s just a matter of tapping into the resources that we already have here and opening them up as training venues for the greater community. The athletes that come to me have a great desire to learn about training for long, endurance events. With 15 years of experience in racing and training triathlon, I believe I www.womanthismonth.com

have a lot to share – that’s how my training group, G Trains Tri, came about. “I’m inspired by the idea of continual improvement and I’m constantly looking for methods to train better and race faster. I had one of my athletes tell me that I was the kind of coach she would tell her daughter about. That meant a lot because identifying elite athletes of the future means getting the kids of today involved. Success in elite sport doesn’t happen overnight – it must be nurtured from childhood. Many of the group that I trained up for the Ironman 70.3 last December were complete beginners –

some didn’t even own a bike. Seeing them all cross the finish line beaming with satisfaction was elating for me. “The hardest part of triathlon is showing up on day one. Women make great endurance athletes and have natural ‘staying’ ability. Triathlon is a wonderful lifestyle choice as swimming, cycling and running are skills that can enhance a holiday, promote lifelong health and provide time out of your busy life to be at one with your thoughts. My hope is that Bahrain will continue to embrace the sport and provide opportunities for the broader community at grassroots level.

If we get many people involved and they stay in the sport long enough, the standard will continue to rise.” February 2017

PEOPLE | interview

From Strife to Art Yusra Ahmed shares the artistic journey that took her from her war-torn birthplace to the exhibition halls of Bahrain.

I

n the year of 1994, civil war plagued Yemen and a young couple from Aden were studying in Moscow and faced with a difficult choice. Deciding not to return to their stricken homeland, they migrated to Bahrain. And so, in 1996, Yusra and her husband Ahmed Omar arrived in Bahrain hoping for a better life for themselves and their four-yearold son. The island felt strange to Yusra and, with noone she could trust with her son, she decided to be a stay at home mum. She says: “My son was the only ray of solace in a dark and alien place, but with the coming years I was blessed with three more beautiful children. And between all the peaks and valleys of an immigrant life I always had an unstable relationship with art.” From her early days in Russia, Yusra had always had a fascination with the subject, but says she could never be satisfied with the stringent theory and methodology of realism. She says: “Realism is beautiful if your goal is to mimic nature, like painting a basket of fruit. But its rigid rules and order give no real room for self-expression. It was about technique, and I thirsted for release. “I felt art had to be more than just getting the strokes just right, the shadows at the right angle or the perspective accurate. I was aimlessly looking for something that could open the floodgates of my emotions.” So, she began to doodle in her sketchbooks and, over the years, produced elongated figures, grotesque amalgamations and compositions that were as confused and lost as she was. That was when she realised art could form a photograph of her psyche, and the artistic process, her therapy. She also recognised a certain distaste for brushes, preferring hard tools that could be scraped against the paper, such as pastels or charcoal. She adds: “I liked to get messy with my fingers and press my feelings onto my work.” With her children grown up and more time on her hands, from 2007 she began to seek art passionately on the island. From books to workshops to meeting different women, she

Yusra Ahmed engaged with the artistic community. She fashioned her own tools out of wood and used plastic cards to express her restless moods. She also mastered the delicate medium of acrylic inks, which covered the pieces in her recent first solo show, Brushless, at Mashq Art Space. She says: “A woman is often fragmented in her identity; she plays many roles and resembles many different things to different people. Whether I am an immigrant, a wife or a mother, the question that haunted me is, what remains without all these roles? That quiet despair is what I have been yearning to communicate. My quest, through art, was not to be able to produce the perfect painting, but to find a deep gratification in the process of its production. Art can not only recycle the nature around us, but the conditions within us. “In my first solo exhibition, all the paintings used acrylic inks, which have a magical transparency, and were painted under the influence of music. The exhibition represented a kaleidoscopic journey from my early years of estrangement to the recent years of epiphany.” Her boundless love and dedication to her family has made its mark on her husband, who is now an associate director at MSCEB, and on Omar, that little boy, who is now 23 and pursuing his Master of Architecture in Malaysia and also happens to be a poet. g www.womanthismonth.com

This American country singer might’ve ruffled a few feathers with her pink dress at the Golden Globes but she stole the show with her hair and make-up. Apple Sharma shows you how to copy her look. Brow Effect Big eyebrows are in at the moment, but even if you’re not naturally blessed, it’s easy to fake the look. Start with brushing the brow from the front to the tail so you know where it needs filling. Use an eye pencil closest to your natural hair colour to gently shade sparse spots. For a fresh and radiant look, rub a highlighter pencil on your fingertips and apply just below the eyebrow arch or to the inner corner of the eye – and voilà!

Carrie Underwood

Shiny Locks The secret to nailing the perfect hairdo is to prep your hair before styling and use the right product for your hair type. Use mousse to give volume and body and a tiny drop of shine serum for a healthy lustre. Wax is great for styling short hair and a spray will lock your style in place.

Rosy Pout Carrie’s pink lips complement her dress and rosy cheeks perfectly. Pink is a versatile colour that almost anyone can wear. Whether it’s sheer light shades or more daring ones like hot fuchsia, you just have to find the right one for your skin tone. Lighter pinks will make your lips look fuller and darker hues will make your pout smaller. Brighten your look with cool tones and add warmth to your face with electric pink.

28

February 2017

Base Control To emulate Carrie’s flawless complexion you need to start with a clean canvas. The best way to do that is to use a primer as a base. It will help reduce the appearance of both pores and wrinkles, even out your skin and give it a smooth effect. Primer is best for oily skins as it creates a matt look. Dab a small amount in the centre of the face and work your way out, blending it up to your hairline and on the neck. Always use a moisturiser before priming and follow with foundation and translucent powder to set your make-up. Perfect Glow Highlighter on Carrie's nose and cheeks makes her skin glow from within. To give your face some definition, apply the highlighter diagonally across your cheekbone from underneath the centre of your eye socket up towards your hairline. Dabbing a little on your cupid’s bow will give your lipstick a clean look. Or simply mix a liquid highlighter with your moisturiser for an overall luminous glow. www.womanthismonth.com

SOFT AND SUPPLE HANDS Our hands are exposed to a lot throughout the day. Pamper them with a hot oil manicure and reap the benefits of this remarkable treatment.

F

rom chemicals in household products to harsh detergents, not to mention the weather and constant washing, they all strip the natural moisture from your hands and make them feel dry. According to Joz Salon & Spa, a hot oil manicure will give your hands much-needed respite and there are many excellent reasons to try it. Great for skin and nail health The skin on hands is very thin and hence is prone to dryness and wrinkles. Warm oils used in this treatment provide a nutrition boost and result in a soft, pliable and glowing skin. Oils such as vitamin E, almond, sesame and sunflower are used in the procedure, all of which are very good for your skin’s health. Provides relief from dry and brittle nails The oil provides nourishment to the nail bed, helping the new growth to become strong and resistant to peeling and breaking. Regular use of this treatment will help avoid frequent breakage. Adding essential oils such as lavender, jojoba and lemon will further increase the effectiveness of the manicure, as these are known to promote nail growth. www.womanthismonth.com

Cure for prickly cuticles We have all suffered from dry and peeling cuticles every now and then. Cuticles are there to protect your nail matrix, but sometime they become too dry or overgrow, resulting in unsightly nails. They can be painful too. Hot oil manicure helps soften the cuticles, making them more manageable. Boosts blood circulation This procedure calls for you to immerse your hands in warm oil. The heat combined with gentle massage is a great way to improve blood circulation in your hands, making them healthy and soft. You can add a drop or two of essential oils to increase the benefits. Great cleanser and exfoliator Just like the oil cleansing method used to remove make-up from the face, the warm oil helps cleanse the skin on your hands. It also makes the dead outer layer of the skin soft, which is then easily exfoliated by gentle massaging motions. It’s great for men too Unlike other manicures which basically cater to aesthetic purposes, a hot oil manicure actually

helps with nail and skin health, making it a great option for men, too, as they tend to have rough skin on their hands, which can be alleviated with regular hot oil manicure sessions. Call 17 369-133, 16 031-120 or 17 756-449. February 2017

A Spotlight Story

This leading global marque is taking a brand new approach to technological storytelling.

A

s the first automotive brand worldwide, BMW is using Google Spotlight Stories technology as an innovative way of creating a 360-degree interactive virtual reality brand experience that is broadcast via YouTube. 'Visionary' offers a unique, immersive experience of the BMW VISION NEXT 100 – the concept study developed for the marque’s centenary in 2016. Through Google Spotlight Stories, BMW allows automotive and technology fans to interactively explore the BMW VISION NEXT 100 in a spectacular combination of aesthetic product presentation and sophisticated mobile virtual reality. The basis is a 360-degree video staging, which is extended through interactive elements. Users can dip into this experience via the YouTube app on Android devices, as well as through the Google Spotlight Stories app for iOS and Android operating systems. The vision vehicle – BMW VISION NEXT 100 – demonstrates the commitment of the brand to focus on the future of mobility. This vehicle combines coupé-type sportiness with the dynamic elegance of a sedan – but rather than

being an anonymous transport machine, it is a highly customised vehicle, the company says. Driver-vehicle interactions are managed by Alive Geometry; Boost and Ease modes, which offer a choice of driver-controlled or vehiclecontrolled operations, and the interior of the vehicle changes to suit the mode of travel. “Visionary perfectly shows how the BMW Group masterfully applies new possibilities of digital communications, to create intense and amazing experiences,” says Jörg Poggenpohl, head of Digital Marketing BMW Group. “We are the first automotive brand to use Google Spotlight Stories. This perfectly fits the selfconception of BMW as innovator and creator of the future.” Visionary was jointly created by BMW and the digital agency Jung von Matt. Max Lederer, director of Jung von Matt, says: “Innovations require courage – without the trust that we were shown by the BMW Group, the groundbreaking work in creating Visionary wouldn’t have been possible. For Jung von Matt this project has been as much a challenge as for the other parties involved.

“A team of specialists has worked its way through a whole new software, which was simultaneously developed further in Mountain View. Together with the great team of Google in Germany and in the US, a digital lighthouse project has been created, which, in the opinion of Jung von Matt, represents the future of mobile brand experience: interactive storytelling in the virtual space. The whole project was embedded within the BMW Group centenary campaign THE NEXT 100 YEARS.” Google Spotlight Stories is a mixture of storytelling and mobile virtual reality. A 360degree view function changes the smartphone into a window to another world. Interactivity is provided through sensors included in the smartphone (gyroscope, touch, etc). The user navigates through the video experience and can additionally explore subplots and activate other perspectives. Euro Motors is the distributor for BMW in the Kingdom. Call 17 750-750.

FEATURE | valentine's special

Dates With a Difference With Valentine’s on the horizon our thoughts turn to romance but, if you’re not all about choccies and flowers, you might want to consider something a bit unusual to treat the one you love (or yourself). We’ve come up with some ideas for dates to get the adrenaline pumping and a few that are just outright slushy. Channel Bambi – Nothing warms a chilly heart like laughter, and there are few things funnier than watching someone who can’t skate take to the ice – an excuse, if you need one, to hold your partner tight! Even if you’re a seasoned veteran, the freezing atmosphere of the skating rink presents an option to wrap up warm, clasp your loved one’s gloved hand and dance along to the tunes. Follow your session with a steaming mug of hot chocolate and wait for things to heat up. You can skate in Bahrain at Funland and it’s a great option for those on a tight budget with weekday tickets at just BD3, including skate hire. Call 17 292-313. On the Wings of Love – Have you ever fancied sky diving, but haven’t quite got up the nerve to throw yourself out of a perfectly good plane? Then, this one’s for you. Gravity Indoor Skydiving has a special couple’s offer for Valentine’s Day. From February 14-17, couples, or any duo, can book a flight for BD25. They will fly one minute each, separately, then share the final minute together. The package will also include a free USB with all pictures and videos and a free photo frame with a printed picture of your selection. Call 13 100-000. Back to Nature – Treat yourself to a weekend on the gorgeous Hawar Islands, home to one of the world’s largest colonies of Socotra cormorants as well as Nubian ibex and lots of other wonderful wildlife,

34

February 2017

including lizards and birds of prey. There are also boat tours to go dugong watching, of which the Gulf has the most significant population outside of Australia. Stay at the recently revamped Hawar Beach Hotel, from BD85 including boat transfer, breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet, taxes, activities, kayaks, bicycles and bus tour. Or, for a self-catering option, go for one of the Al-Maha Lagoon chalets, from BD30 (excluding transportation) per night for two people. Call Hawar Beach Hotel 17 849-111, Al-Maha Lagoon Chalets 17 641-666. Foodie Favourite – Are you, or the object of your affections, a frustrated gourmand? Do you love to eat great food but have limited kitchen skills? Fear not, the answer is at hand in the shape Sarah Hijris, a trained chef, who is in charge of catering at A Piece of Cake and also has her own business, Sarah’s Gourmet Kitchen. She’ll come to your home and teach you both how to cook a fabulous Valentine’s meal, then you just light the candles and enjoy diner à deux at your own table. Should you wish, Sarah can also recommend the perfect grapes to complement your meal. Prices start from around BD40-60 and are dependent on ingredients and number of courses. Call 17 596-055/ 39 937-377. www.womanthismonth.com

Take to the Waves – Want a daytime date that’s great fun and, at the same time healthy? Take your other half for a paddle boarding lesson. For BD85 Gypsea will arrange a couple’s paddle board/kayak lesson with a tour from a certified instructor. This is followed by a barbecue and shisha on a private section of beach lit with fire sticks and lanterns with cool music playing in the background. If you fancy taking the seagoing experience a little further, they also offer couples’ sailing and kite surfing. Call 77 363-677. Need for Speed – If the object of your affections is a petrol head or speed freak, you could do worse than heading out to the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) and putting the pedal to the metal in a go-karting experience. You can book single person 15-minute sessions from BD10 or why not get a group of friends together and stage a mini grand prix? There are also a range of other great driving experiences and track tours at the BIC itself and, if you don’t fancy joining in, they make great gifts. Call 17 450-000. Ride Into the Sunset – Picture it, riding on horseback through the warm waves of a shallow sea with your loved one by your side. Sounds wonderful doesn’t it? And, even if you’re not an expert in the saddle, www.womanthismonth.com

it’s never too late to learn. There are stables at the Dilmun Club, the Country Club and Muharraq Horse Riding School, which offer lessons for adults as well as kids. Once you’ve got the hang of it, the Country Club and others go early morning beach riding. it’s great fun but you’re actually more likely to see the sun rise than set. Call 17 593-593. Island Pearl – Visit one of Bahrain’s two UNESCO World Heritage sites, Muharraq’s Pearling Trail, for a morning or afternoon spent delving into the island’s fascinating history. Do your homework beforehand to find out all about the restored houses, take your loved one by the hand and tell them a story. If you enjoy this, head over to Qal’at al-Bahrain, the other UNESCO site and watch the sunset over the sea from the ancient site. February 2017

THE FERTILITY FACTOR

Infertility, or the inability to have a child, strikes a significant percentage of the world’s population, cutting across racial, ethnic and socio-economic differences. Thankfully, there are ways to overcome it, finds Behnaz Sanjana.

H

uman reproduction is such a natural life event that one seldom stops to think how complex and almost miraculous the whole process is. When a woman has attained an age of physical maturity, and is mentally ready to nurture another being, her body will naturally undergo the required changes to do so. But the path can be strewn with several roadblocks on the way. Dr Sudharani Bairraju, obstetrics and gynaecology/IVF consultant at Bahrain Specialist Hospital, is here to help with the basics.

What causes infertility in women? There are many factors which may contribute to difficulties in becoming pregnant, Dr Sudharani tells us. “Problems in the female genital tract like blocked fallopian tubes due to infection, endometriosis, fibroids in the uterus, adhesions inside the uterine cavity or abnormal development of the uterus can all lead to difficulty in conception,” she says. Hormonal problems are another reason. She goes on to say that a woman’s age and stress also contribute to infertility. “An unhealthy lifestyle has a negative bearing on fertility by causing hormonal imbalances which interfere with the formation of mature eggs, thus leading to difficulties in getting pregnant,” says Dr Sudharani. Asked if other medical conditions can also account for the problem, she adds:

42

February 2017

“Radiation and chemotherapy cause acute ovarian failure. There will be loss of ovarian follicles [eggs], leading to infertility and premature menopause.” In some women infertility is unexplained, known as idiopathic infertility. This is when standard medical tests have not found the underlying reason for the failure to get pregnant. What’s age got to do with it? “Age is the single most important factor affecting a woman’s fertility. Women are born with a limited number of eggs in the ovaries and as age advances, this ovarian reserve decreases. Fertility starts declining in the late 20s. A woman’s best reproductive years are in her 20s,” says our expert.

As age advances, the ovaries do not continue to produce healthy, mature eggs and do not respond as favourably to the hormones that trigger ovulation. That is not to say that someone in her 30s or beyond cannot fall pregnant, although it may need medical intervention. What about men? When it comes to men, their fertility does not decline at the same rate as their female counterparts with age; although the older a man, the lesser the chances of easily conceiving. A man’s fertility depends on the quantity and quality of his sperm. Usually, fertility problems in males are related to sperm production and motility. “Male infertility is as common as female infertility. Therefore men should also get

A girl is born with all the eggs she will need in her lifetime, between one to two million of them. There is a continuous decline in this number, and once a girl attains puberty there are only 25 per cent remaining. Total depletion of all the eggs signifies the end of the menopausal period in a woman’s life.

tested,” says Dr Sudharani. So, is there a problem with me? “Women who fail to become pregnant after one year of unprotected intercourse should see a doctor. If the woman is 35 years old or more, she should seek help after six months of unsuccessfully trying to conceive,” advises Dr Sudharani. A good start It is quite common for young girls to suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS),

www.womanthismonth.com

which is a common cause of infertility. It is a hormonal imbalance which disrupts the process of ovulation (the growth and release of eggs from the ovaries) without which pregnancy cannot happen. Dr Sudharani says: “Inculcating a healthy lifestyle in young girls will prevent most fertilityrelated problems later in life. A healthy diet, regular exercise, avoiding exposure to environmental toxins, avoiding smoking, alcohol, avoiding stress and prevention of obesity will arrest hormonal and ovulation related problems.”

The plan of action In women, blood tests to check the relevant hormones, a test to check the fallopian tubes are clear and an ultrasound to check the uterus and ovaries are carried out. In men, simple semen analysis is the first line of investigation. Treatment depends on the cause of infertility; whether it’s tubal, ovarian, uterine or something else, says our expert. “Treatments vary from simple ovulation induction with medicines to intra uterine insemination [IUI] and in vitro fertilization [IVF]; depending on the type of infertility. Women with ovulation problems can simply be treated with medicines which help in production of an egg and its release.” In IUI, treated semen is placed inside the uterus during the time of egg release. It is the treatment of choice in couples who have unexplained infertility and men who have ejaculation problems or low sperm count. “The success rate of each cycle is 10 to 15 per cent, increasing up to 60 to 70 per cent with repeated cycles,” informs the doctor. “IVF is a procedure where the fusion of sperm and egg is made to happen in an artificial tubal environment of a laboratory. The female partner is given around 10 days of daily injections to stimulate the ovaries to produce the optimal number of follicles. Then all these follicles are aspirated into a tube under ultrasound guidance. These are combined with her partner’s sperm in a dish. The resulting embryos are transferred back to the uterus between two and five days later. Success rates vary according to the patient’s age, type and duration of infertility,” says Dr Sudharani. This treatment sees a 35 to 40 per cent success rate and is the treatment of choice for those with bilateral blocked tubes, severe male factor infertility, unexplained infertility with failed IUIs and in women with a poor ovarian reserve. showcase BAHRAIN SPECIALIST HOSPITAL

THE LOWDOWN ON FEBRILE SEIZURES Dr Piyush Ostwal, neurology specialist, explains a frightening childhood condition.

F

ebrile seizures are convulsions brought on by a fever in infants or small children. They may lose consciousness and shake, moving limbs on both sides of the body. Less commonly, the child becomes rigid or has twitches in only part of the body. Most seizures last a minute or two but some can be as brief as a few seconds while others last more than 15 minutes. Most febrile seizures occur during the first day of a fever. If it happens soon after a fever has begun or when the temperature is relatively low, the risk of recurrence is higher. Most children recover completely, but there is a risk of subsequent seizures without fever (epilepsy). Some groups of children – including those with cerebral palsy, delayed development or other neurological abnormalities – have an increased risk of developing epilepsy. Seizures are frightening, but parents and caregivers must stay calm and observe the child. During a seizure, there is a chance

the child could be injured by falling or choke from food or saliva. To prevent accidental injury, place the child on the ground and do not hold or restrain them. To prevent choking, they should be placed on the side or stomach. When possible, gently remove any objects from the mouth. Never place anything in the sufferer’s mouth as objects can be broken and obstruct the airway. If the seizure lasts 10 minutes, take the child immediately to the nearest medical facility, particularly if they show symptoms of stiff neck, extreme lethargy or abundant vomiting. Prolonged daily use of oral anticonvulsants to prevent febrile seizures is usually not recommended. Children who are especially prone may be treated with the drugs orally or rectally, whenever they have a fever. Call 17 812-000 or email piyush.ostwal@ bsh.com.bh.

Hatha yoga can be used to complement most weight and strength training programmes, whilst being a precursor to meditation. “Many people in this region

Although all age groups can reap the mental and physical benefits, Urmila is mindful of the level of exertion of individual students. “The full scope of the exercises are customised to suit each person’s needs, and not everyone needs to look like a contortionist during the activity,” she says. Ayurveda, the science of life, is a system of health and healing that has been practised in India for more than 5,000 years. It helps women to find their body rhythm, which is closely linked to nature.

he ancient Indian herbal system of medicine has many important and useful herbs for women. “A woman’s body is wonderfully complex and delicate,” says Dr Athulya Unnikrishnan, alternative medicine practitioner at Middle East Medical Center (MEM). “Multiple roles as a mother, daughter, wife, homemaker and wage earner are physically and mentally quite taxing. As a woman, you might share some common health risks with men, such as hypertension, diabetes et cetera. But because of your special reproductive role, you are at risk of some distinctly female disorders. “In my experience as an alternative medicine practitioner, 70 per cent of women in Bahrain suffer from menstrual

disorders, pregnancy-related and menopausal discomforts, back pain, frozen shoulder, knee joint pain, early osteoarthritic diseases, as well as disc- and nerve-related conditions such as sciatica, varicose veins et cetera.” The causes behind femaleoriented diseases include obesity, junk food habits, overeating of

JAZZ FOR THE PALATE Oozing with luxury, this ultra-chic award-wining signature outlet offers a feast for the senses every Tuesday.

S

ay "sayonara" to the midweek blues and head to Teatro at the Downtown Rotana for a feast for the senses. At the Sushi and Sax night for just BD15++, you can indulge in a unique epicurean experience with unlimited sushi while listening to cool tunes from a talented saxophonist. The restaurant is modern, with warm hues of auburn and purple enveloping the décor, while wooden fixtures lend it a robust charm. An open kitchen lets you witness all the action behind the pans while a floor-toceiling window on the other side showcases a stunning panoramic view of the bustling capital below. A delightfully jazzy version of How Deep is Your Love? was played by the lady with the sax as my dining partner and I took our seats. Since the hotel’s inception last year, Teatro has taken the spotlight as the premiere culinary venue, maintaining the same high standards as its sister branches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The menu boasts a plethora of over 100 dishes with selected gems from cuisines such as Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Southeast Asian and Italian. The feast began as our server placed an enormous, beautifully presented platter of

sushi in a kaleidoscope of colours at the table. Accompanying it were three small portions of salad. Eight different types of sushi, nigiri and maki rolls with salmon, tuna, crab, shrimp, tobiko and vegetables left me spoilt for choice. The rice was cooked to perfection, the texture of the fish was smooth and succulent. My favourite was the crumb-fried crab uramaki and the mango-topped veggie roll. The entire dish was polished off in less than 10 minutes and we were ready for round two. If there is a specific variety that particularly tickles your taste buds, you can order more as many times as you wish – which we did with gusto. While waiting for the refill, my attention was drawn to the musician, who had switched to the flute, and we soon found ourselves humming to George Michael’s Careless Whisper. Heading out to chat to guests, speciality chef Jun Jie Piao came over and explained the fascinating procedure of naturally tinting tobiko roe that is sprinkled on each creation. He also mentioned that the fish is imported to ensure superior quality and that the restaurant offers a variety of sushi beyond that served on the platter. A strong emphasis is placed on food

and beverage pairing and the chefs and sommeliers team up to offer inspired combinations. Accompanying this promotion is a cocktail called the ‘Downtown Tokyo’ which blends ginger, lemongrass, coriander and ginger ale for a truly refreshing blend. The bubbles coupled with the invigorating tang of citrus immediately etched it as a favourite in my books. Various tempting promotions are available each day at Teatro, from the daily early bird dinner to ladies’ night every Thursday. And the venue’s atmosphere of decadence is perfect for a private celebration or joyous special occasion. It is open from Monday to Saturday, 6pm-1am. Call 13 119-999. www.womanthismonth.com

Hiking up Nicaragua’s most active volcano and sliding down its sandy side is an adrenaline junkie’s wildest dream come true. The Cerro Negro is a short distance from the exciting town of Leon and is primarily made up of fine grains of volcanic rock, which makes it possible to surf down the steep slope on a wooden board at speeds of up to 30mph. At the top of the hill, panoramic views of the Telica and San Cristobal volcanoes await your eyes. Nicaragua offers vibrant LatinAmerican culture and plenty of other adventure sports, including zip lining and kayaking. The country also boasts incredible variety. Head to Granada for grand colonial Spanish architecture or Little Corn Islands for an almost Caribbean-like atmosphere. The Voice of a Grieving Woman Ouiam Charkani El Hassani opens up on the heartbreak of miscarriage.

H

ave you ever cried from happiness? Have you ever witnessed tears of joy? I have – twice in my life, and those moments will be forever cherished in my heart and soul. Both are related to life and bringing new tiny humans to this big, wide world. Yes, you guessed right, it was when I first saw a ‘Big Fat Positive’ on that home pregnancy test. The first time was in 2013 and the result was an incredible little miracle that embellished and enriched my life in so many ways: my son Adam. The second time was just few months ago. Every mother reading this, knows exactly what I am talking about. The butterflies in the stomach, the fear of this great responsibility on your shoulders that will never fade with time or age, the endless love that your heart will double in size to harbour for that unborn child. The excitement that follows is enormous, because you know your life has changed forever. All these feelings, and more, erupt suddenly yet expectedly in your daily life and you embrace each and every one, no matter whether it is your first, second or 10th child. Yet not all stories have happy endings, and they shouldn’t, because hardships are what we need to grow stronger and wiser. Mine wasn’t destined to be completed with the cooing and giggles of a newborn; it met its end at a doctor’s office, a couple of months after that glorious day when I found out I was pregnant. It was my third appointment and even though life has never been kinder, I had a little pinch in my www.womanthismonth.com

heart, the kind that hurts yet you have no idea why. I had worn the talismans of hope and armed my lips with my new mantra: “I choose to be optimistic.” I had a feeling that something was wrong and I secretly prayed to hear that most beautiful sound of life – a tiny human’s heartbeat. Once in the examination room, it was hard to keep up those tricks of faith or even remember the mantra I had been reciting for the last hour. I scrutinised my doctor’s face looking for clues and, before he even spoke, I knew that inside my shaking body there was only ONE beating heart. You see I am good at keeping calm and at smiling when things go wrong. I was raised like every Arab woman; we must hide our feelings because God forbid who talks about those damn feelings! So I rose like a big girl, calm and poised, listened to the doctor trying to give me the tiniest ray of hope, yet assuring me that miscarriages happen all the time. I thanked him and walked to the door. In every myth, religion, ancient story the woman’s body is described to be for one purpose: carrying the offspring. This notion has

been, and still is, instilled in every female’s brain. Society looks at us as a means of reproduction. Once a couple is married everyone asks them the ultimate question: “When are you getting pregnant?” as if there was a button to press and, boom, a baby on the way! So, when things go wrong, every woman, including myself, feels like a failure, chooses to suffer in silence and keep her story to herself, chooses to behave like a big girl and keep a smile on her face, and walk to the door, like I did at that doctor’s office. So now I choose to do just the opposite; I choose to tell the world my story so that every single woman knows that it is OK, that life doesn’t stop and that the universe must have another plan for you. The woman’s amazing body is a work of art, all these impressive things it does, makes it God’s gift to every woman, and it should be cherished and loved beyond measure. I am a proud woman who is grieving the loss of her unborn child, yet I am strong enough to love and respect my body and tell the whole world my story. Ouiam blogs as Chanelmama. February 2017

The Thing About Postpartum Depression… Lamar Kanafani, the island’s first, and so far only, licensed marriage and family therapist, writes for WTM on the issues that concern mums.

T

he arrival of a new baby is a life-altering experience. No friend or family member can accurately explain to you how life really changes. The pressures of parenthood, the emotional and physical demands in caretaking, the increased financial responsibility and the effects on social life, marital relationship and lifestyle are but a few of the major changes we experience as parents. The thing about postpartum depression, or PPD, is that mothers are not the only ones who suffer from it. Paternal postnatal depression, or PPND, exists; and it can turn into a serious condition if left untreated. About 25 to 30 per cent of new fathers will experience PPND; however, it’s more difficult to diagnose in men than women due to several factors. First, the onset of PPND tends to be later than that of PPD in mothers, who tend to experience it within the first three months post-delivery. In men, onset often occurs six to nine months after the birth. Another reason PPND is more difficult to detect is that many symptoms present differently than they do in mothers. Mothers tend to show more recognisable signs of PPD. These include: depressed mood or severe mood swings; excessive crying; difficulty bonding with baby; withdrawing from family and friends; changes in appetite; changes in sleep patterns or quality; fatigue or lethargy; reduced interest or pleasure in usual activities; intense irritability and anger; feelings of worthlessness, shame, guilt or inadequacy; difficulty concentrating or making decisions; panic attacks and other anxiety symptoms; thoughts of harming self or baby; and suicidal thoughts. While fathers can still experience the above symptoms, they tend to present with less obvious signs. Behaviours indicative of a father suffering from PPND include overworking, increased irritability, increased stress, withdrawing, infidelity, spending excess time with friends, excessive drinking, aggressive behaviour, impulsivity and risk-taking. These symptoms can happen either gradually or all of a sudden and they range from mild to severe. Every father who

60

February 2017

experiences PPND experiences it differently. There are several predispositions that increase the chances for a new father to experience PPND. Personal history of depression or anxiety, changes in male hormones, troubled spousal relationship, poor or frictional relationship with extended family members, non-standard family situation (divorce, single-parent or step-parent homes), poor social functioning or support, limited resources or financial problems and a sense of exclusion from mother and baby are all factors that make it more likely the new father will experience PPND symptoms to some degree. Many dads feel alone, and often don’t know they’re NOT. Cultural and social norms, as well as the fear of being judged, labelled or stigmatised can contribute to men keeping quiet about how they’re feeling. This, and the lack of awareness on the topic, decrease the likelihood that they will reach out for help. PPND is a serious but treatable condition. And if left untreated, the long-term consequences for the father and the family can be damaging.

So, it is very important that fathers reach out for professional help. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is an assessment tool used to help determine whether or not you’re suffering from PPND. There are short and more comprehensive versions which can be accessed online if you wish to test yourself. Also, if you’re a concerned wife who suspects your husband might be suffering or experiencing, to some degree, the above symptoms, do have a private talk with them to express your concerns, to encourage them to open up or to suggest they seek professional help. If that initially feels uncomfortable, try to find ways to make changes together that will help you both get through this difficult time of adjustment with the arrival of a new family member. You can also seek professional help together, which fosters that ideal team effort. For further questions or support, email lamar.kanafani@gmail.com or call 36 009-665. www.womanthismonth.com

PARENTING | advice

Need to Know

Q

Dr Jinan Harith Darwish is a paediatric allergy specialist and clinical immunology fellow at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center. Each month she answers your parenting questions.

My seven-year-old daughter seems to be always hungry. She has three meals a day – a breakfast at home in the morning, lunch and a family meal in the evening – and eats well at all of these. She will often ask for snacks in the meantime, which I try to ensure are healthy such as yoghurt, fruit or chopped veggies with hummus. But, come bedtime, she always says she is hungry. However, if I offer a piece of fruit she doesn’t want it and I find myself giving in and allowing biscuits or sweet things to get her to bed. I’ve noticed that she is putting on weight and, while I don’t want to make an issue of this, I’ve struggled with my weight all my life and don’t want her to have the same difficulties. Do you have any advice for me?

A

Regulate Volume: Replace her three main meals with six smaller portion meals and two snacks to keep her blood sugar stable. Emotional hunger, rather than physical hunger: If your child has emotional hunger, you may help by asking 'How do you feel?' Your child may have trouble naming the feelings. Try suggesting a few: bored, lonely, sad, excited; then talk about it. Guilt trip: Never say: "Clean your plate, did you see all the children in Africa who are starving to death while you waste food." Don't force her to eat. Left alone, most children self-regulate and will only eat when they need to. Don't use food as a reward: You don't want her to learn to eat when she is not hungry. Be a fabulous role model: If you curl up with a bag of buttered popcorn on the sofa to watch TV, your daughter will imitate you in a heartbeat. Allow Treats: But get a small or child-size portion.

Q

I’ve been trying to get pregnant for two years now. Tests have shown there is nothing wrong and my mother-inlaw has suggested I try acupuncture, which she has used to treat various ailments. Is this something that could help? www.womanthismonth.com

A

The definition of infertility is usually the failure to conceive after one year of unprotected intercourse (European Society 1996). Infertility can be primary, in women who have never conceived, or secondary, in women who have previously conceived. The jury’s out. As the research swings both ways, and the treatment itself is harmless, it’s by and large accepted that acupuncture for fertility could be worth trying if you’re looking to boost your chances of success. The British Acupuncture Council claims there’s evidence to show acupuncture increases sperm motility (how fast the sperm swim), as well as increasing levels of the male sex hormone testosterone and lowering the temperature of the scrotum (where sperm are stored), creating a better environment for keeping sperm healthy. Research has shown acupuncture may help in the treatment of infertility by: l Regulating fertility hormones – stress and other factors can disrupt the function of the hypothalamic pituitary-ovarian axis (HPOA). Acupuncture promotes the release of

beta-endorphin in the brain, which regulates gonadatrophin releasing hormone from the hypothalamus, follicle stimulating hormone from the pituitary gland and oestrogen and progesterone levels from the ovary. l Increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs, which can improve the thickness of the endometrial lining, so increasing the chances of embryo implantation. l Increasing egg production and improving oocyte quality, which could increase the chance of fertilisation. l Enhancing luteal function. l Regulating follicle stimulation hormonereceptor expression. l Normalising cortisol and prolactin levels on IVF medication days. l Reducing stress. l Promoting embryo implantation. Most clinical trials to date suggest that acupuncture may be useful in the embryo transfer stage of in vitro fertilisation, and results in an increased pregnancy rate and a greater number of live births. Star

Gazing Raphael tells us what’s written in the stars this month Aquarius When you want to be, you are the king of the charmers. You can convince the most cynical people to follow your lead which is just as well since this month you will be handed the task of promoting a new company product and the future of your position may rest upon just how successful you are. If you put your business brain into gear this should be a piece of cake and the rewards could be significant. However, you should beware of complacency and try not to take things for granted.

Aries

Scorpio Gemini

You have never been the most romantic of signs but that is simply because you’ve never really been properly romanced. That might all be about to change as someone waltzes into your life and promises to really show you a good time! The first occasion you meet him there will be a definite attraction between you and you’ll be impressed by his passion and energy. Just make sure you don’t get too carried away by the excitement of it all.

Cancer

Taurus

Leo

www.womanthismonth.com

You are a sensitve and sensual sign beneath that cool exterior and it takes a particular kind of individual to see it. Many have tried and failed so, although you are a romantic at heart, your belief in love may have taken a bit of a battering. Fortunately, someone is coming along to “Band Aid” those bruised emotions, bringing you back to life and into the world of the living romantics! Look out for a light suit and a grey-flecked mop of dark hair as a clue to his identity. You may not be the most articulate of signs but even you know the words required to solve the burning issue of your life at the moment. For many of you, a current relationship has run its course and it’s time for a change. Your love affair with a Gemini has driven you to the edge and you have to find the courage to tell them it’s over. Change is never your favourite word but if you are to progress beyond this mess, then the only way is to effect it in your relationship.

Many of you really need to concentrate on shedding a little of that extra weight that has built up since last year. And before you throw up a whole of host of excuses, consider who you’re really trying to fool here. You’re appetite has increased and there is something behind that. It seems there is an underlying worry dictating your behaviour. Dieting and exercise will only offer part of the solution. For the real answer, you may have to dig a whole lot deeper. Taureans love to be in love! They’re driven by that feeling of passion and excitement and enjoy the chase. However, the true trick with the bull is to keep their interest because they can also be easily distracted if they don’t feel at centre of a lover’s universe. If a current relationship has left you feeling anxious, talk about the issues rather than running away. This time around you could have discovered something really special.

Virgo

Libra

Pisces

If you’re thinking about a change of career or tackling a new role at work, just make sure you have all the facts before you commit. Ever the dreamer, you often take on a great deal more than you can chew only to be stressed out by the consequences. While it’s understandable that you want to spread your wings, you’ve got to be sure anything you do will end up benefitting you not someone else. Evaluate everything and negotiate to the last. If a relationship has hit a sticky patch, think of something quirky to liven things up.

horoscopes

Many of you may not be ready for a full blown commitment in a relationship. So, if you’re having doubts about a partner’s admission that he’d like to settle down, perhaps you need to pull on the reins a little. If you still feel you want to have fun, then make your wishes known, rather than let him think you share the same wishes. It doesn’t mean anything has to change between you. Your romantic world is swimming in contradiction and confusion. Part of you wants to be with the person you’re currently dating while part still has doubts about whether they really has the capacity to commit. A face from the past is likely to make an appearance around Valentine’s Day and you’ll quickly realise feelings for them you thought gone are are still lurking somewhere deep inside.

If a busy schedule and a hectic work load have started to take their toll, then why not consider a trip away? You’ve been throwing your weight around and upsetting people with your often unreasonable demands, so, it’s not just you who needs a holiday! Give yourself a chance to recharge the batteries because you running on empty will help no one. On the home front there may also be a major decision to make considering the sale of a property.

Sagittarius

February could see obstacles concerning a planned purchase and you may come close to blowing your top when you realise what’s been going on. It seems someone has been leading you on a merry dance with the promise of something that was never going to happen and it will leave you feeling a bit of a fool. Still, it’s not all doom and gloom and there is the chance for a few smiles on the 16th when a relative turns up unexpectedly with some good news.

Capricorn

Just when you thought things were moving along in your favour, prepare to come down to earth with a bump as your luck deserts you. It seems a loose end from several weeks back has returned to haunt you and there’s likely to be little you can do about it, save face the music. Your natural charm and quick-thinking could help ease the full impact . On the family front, watch out for a relative with a chip on their shoulder around the 12th who seeks to deceive you financially. February 2017
