EDITOR’S NOTE
The only women's magazine distributed with the GDN
t’s 2016 and I want to wish all our readers a very Happy New Year, made even more so by the arrival of former editor, and still fashion and beauty editor, Fernanda’s baby boy – Welcome Oliver! It’s very much ‘New Year, New You’ in our office and, in that vein, we’re launching a three-month health and fitness campaign to help you stay on track with those all important New Year’s Resolutions. Check out the coming trends for 2016, and a few we hope will make it to the island before too long. We’re also taking inspiration from our interviews this month, Yara Salman is succeeding in business at an age when many girls are just finishing university and May Mahmoud is bringing us artisan chocolate that we can actually eat with a clear conscience, could it get any better? If, like us, the New Year gives you the urge to de-clutter your home then look no further than Ankita Mamgain’s tips in our homes section, I’m thinking of inviting her round to help me sort my closets. In keeping with our healthy theme this month, Ankita has also come up with a whole host of travel options for holidays that will help you get fitter while enjoying some fabulous locations. In our Parenting section, Dr Jinan looks at the phenomenon of imaginary friends and tells us they’re really nothing to worry about. Alongside all this there’s our regular fashion and beauty pages, the latest styles coming out of Tinsel Town, great products for you to try and I got to check out one of the island’s newest anti-aging treatments for this month’s beauty review. Hope you enjoy the January edition and, don’t forget, get in touch on social media to let us know what you think.

Gift Ideas for All Budgets
Letter A Silver Lining Reading about the Palm Association in the December issue of WTM, it made me stop and think how Jennifer Sale and Kirsti Shaheen, 15 years ago, decided they wanted to do something for the less fortunate and made sure this idea became a reality. In those pre-social media days it would have taken much longer to spread their message but they remained undeterred. Of course they received help from Shaikha Lulwa bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, but the ground level legwork would have required much determination and patience. And today, many projects, fund-raisers and happy faces later, they must be so proud of the robust charitable organisation that they have set up. Honestly there have been so many instances when I thought of doing something similar, but something or other took priority on my to-do list. I truly applaud Jennifer and Kirsti for their efforts and achievements. Aysha.

Ladies We Loved I really enjoyed reading this article; you covered women from all fields. From philanthropist Michelle Bailey to Manar AlRayes who is excelling in business, star-blogger Georgina, PR and HR front runners Leslie Garduque and Nacira Ferdjoukh and artist Gaye Bentham and many more. It’s really inspiring to read their stories about how they got started, what kept them going and what they plan to do in the coming year. We need to celebrate their success and that of many other women who are just as hardworking and exemplary as your chosen ladies. It’s really nice to see that women in Bahrain have a platform such as Woman This Month that recognises them and shares their achievements. Jaya. Save the Date I would really like to thank WTM team for putting together the events page, especially for all the Christmas tree lightings listed on it. Each year I try to visit them with my kids (five and eight years) but miss out on many events as I’m usually not sure of the dates. This year, although a lot of hotels decided to do it on the same day (December 1) we could plan ahead as to which ones we wanted to attend and which to miss. Here’s wishing you all a great Christmas and a very Happy New Year!
Thajba.

World Traveller This brand has grabbed the attention of fashion lovers all over the globe for two main reasons: its creative director and his concept of luxury for all. The best news is that now it can to be purchased online.
K
arl Lagerfeld has announced the launch of its global women’s flagship store, Karl.com. The accessible luxe designs are available to shoppers in 97 countries, including Bahrain, to the delight of fashionistas worldwide. To celebrate the occasion, the brand has created a special capsule collection called, Karl Around the World. The items are inspired by the designer’s international travels and jet-set lifestyle. Using a palette of white, black and grey, accented by pops of navy blue and cherry red, the pieces are funky and practical. Ideal for long journeys, the styles embody a relaxed aesthetic in soft cotton fabrics styled in sweatshirts, T-shirts and sweatpants. Bespoke patterns and graphics are a trademark, such as cat cartoons inspired by the designer’s famous feline, Choupette. The pieces are also adorned with details like glitter, embroidery, appliqué patches, studs, sequins and high-density prints.
16
January 2016
The accessories include a variety of handbags such as crossbody, weekender, duffle, minaudiere and zipped pouch styles. All are crafted in supple Safiano leather and finished with colourful patches influenced by Karl’s travels. Small accessories range from luggage tags, key chains and a passport holder to a travel diary, vanity case, sleeping mask and iPhone case. Beanie hats, a wool-blend blanket-scarf and black leather trainers topped with prints complement the capsule collection. The appliqué patches show off the designer’s worldly travels with playful caricatures of him and his cat. The label also offers ready-towear for men, however this line is still not available at the online store. The company will further expand its portfolio in spring 2016 with the launch of a children’s wear collection. www.womanthismonth.com

COLD CODE Well, it feels like winter has finally arrived on the island with some chilly breezes and even the odd rain shower. Check out these items that will help you face the cooler weather with style.
CAR WASH
The pleated skirt, defined by long thick flaps in a fringe-like style (that reminds us of car wash bands), is a hot trend for the cold season. If you want to add some drama to your look, this is a great option, its flaps will move intensely while you walk to mark your presence. For office-appropriate attire, pick a style with slits that start just above the knee and don’t open entirely like this Salvatore Ferragamo number.
SHORT CUTS
Culottes were a major style trend in the ‘70s characterised by their above-the-ankle hemline and wide legs. Now they’re back, finished in wool, leather and thick jersey (typical winter fabrics), they’re the perfect pick to show off your cool boots. Get inspired by Tommy Hilfiger’s twist on the trend and pair with tights and vintage shoes.
FAB WARMER
The duster coat is the covering of choice for many Hollywood celebrities this season. They’ve definitely been influenced by the number of floor-length coats spotted on the catwalks. Made in different materials, but with variations of wool as its main base, this coat warms and gives savoir-faire to any look. This Massimo Dutti item is spot on trend.

January 2016
COSY THROW Talking about cold weather, the blanket scarf is the coolest new item to add to your winter wardrobe. This design is also a great pick for our mild winter as it can be either a trusty warmer or stylish accessory. This Parfois plussize scarf will certainly add a fashionable spin to your white shirt and jeans uniform.
www.womanthismonth.com
THE IT BAG The truth is that there’s more than one very desirable handbag on our wish list this season. The array of options high-end brands bring to their catwalk shows makes the It Bag a democratic field, leaving us free to opt for the style we love most. We chose an M Missoni as our handbag of the moment showing embroidered fabric and colourful chains can lift a day-to-day look. Next month we’ll probably be falling for another jaw-dropping design; because we can!
BOOT CAMP
If you’ve been waiting the whole year to wear your comfy galoshes, now’s the time! Current trends suggest knee high, however ankle length is never out of style. To look super trendy, opt for lace up designs and chunky heels, they go very well with mid-length skirts, culottes and skinny trousers. Chloe has a selection of must-have items that need to be checked out!

Style Radar Our fashion radar this month is trained on celebrities attending all sorts of events, showing themselves off at their best. Check out their style and pick your favourite look!
ANGELINA JOLIE
The humanitarian, filmmaker, actress and mum of six chose to wear a dress from the Atelier Versace collection on the occasion of the world premiere of her movie By The Sea in Los Angeles. She sported a stunning strapless gown with pleats, entirely beaded with Swarovski crystals in slightly different shades to create a dégradé effect.
KIRSTEN DUNST
The blond American actress opted for a camel chevron printed silk-wool dress with long sleeves from the Gucci Cruise 2016 collection to attend the PEN Center USA’s 25th Annual Literary Awards Festival in Beverly Hills. The graphic effect brings the 1970s’ trend to the red carpet, however this number can easily be a casual style when paired with flat shoes and a maxi handbag.

JANE FONDA
Age is definitely not an excuse for lack of style. The former fitness guru is an example of elegance at the age of 77. She wore a classic smoking in leopard lamé print to attend the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science’s 7th Annual Governors Awards in Hollywood. The Saint Laurent piece is a great alternative to the long redcarpet dress.
CIARA
The singer and songwriter was spotted wearing a pieced patchwork dress and accessories from Coach while out and about in New York City. The fine delicate fabric of the dress contrasts with the roughness of the boots creating a cool laidback style. The look could be improved by a better handbag choice though. A black backpack would definitely be a better pick!
www.womanthismonth.com
CATE BLANCHETT
The sophisticated actress wore a Lanvin number from the summer 2016 collection to appear at the premiere of her film Carol at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The draped dress in chartreuse green jersey with a jewel buckle was built on a nudeeffect background. The outstanding structure shows off the brand’s uniqueness and finesse.
KRYSTEN RITTER
Salvatore Ferragamo was the actress’ frock pick to promote her upcoming TV series Jessica Jones in New York City. The red knit ensemble with black details and matching cape is from the autumn and winter 2015 Runway collection. The dramatic look enhances her slim figure while the ribbon knit is a hot trend of the season.

LAID-BACK CALL
he sportive mode is not always super casual, you can opt for stylish trainers, like these animal print ones, and build your look from there. A wool sweater with an off-the-shoulder neckline is a sexy element that adds pizazz and extra character to the denim bottom. If the breeze gets cooler, a trendy parka can complement the look. Usually made with lightweight fabrics, the main role of this coat is to block the wind, a welcome addition at this time of the year. Parkas are seen as a sporty item but, depending on what you pair it with, the result can change.

FUNKY STYLE
trong shades are usually used in sporting clothes for safety reasons. If you go skiing you shouldn’t opt for white or black, if something happens to you, a bright hue will be easier to spot. With this idea in mind, this look features a bright yellow quilted jacket to warm your winter days. The turtleneck top and culottes enhance the fashionista inside you, as they are 'it'pieces this season. The beanie with pom pom and printed backpack give the final touch to make this look fun and unique. www.womanthismonth.com

ON THE GO
ym clothes can be boring and are usually not always ready to hit the streets. If you like wearing them as you go about your daily tasks, try to give the look an upgrade so you can grab a coffee or do your groceries in practical, yet stylish fashion. Tank tops are a regular choice but instead of pairing them with tight leggings, you can go for pyjama-like bottoms in interesting prints that are fitted, but not that tight. The golden trainers and the feather earrings give a sophisticated touch to the look, while a jacket will always be handy! January 2016

PEOPLE | interview
Beauty, Brains and a Lot of Hard Work At an age when many girls are still just finishing their studies, Bahraini entrepreneur Yara Salman, 21, is already the boss of one successful business, Yara Beauty Lounge, with more on the way. She told WTM the secrets of her success. How did you become involved in beauty and wellness? Growing up around business-oriented parents I was always inspired by their determination to become a success. I believe in finding every opportunity to turn something into a business venture and that’s how I came up with the idea of establishing something that was elite and at the same time provides ladies with the latest beauty treatments in the Kingdom; a combination that is very rare to find today. When and how did you decided to open your salon? By the age of 17, I had graduated from St Christopher’s School and had an option to study overseas or study and work as well, in Bahrain. Setting up a business of my own and studying were both my priority at that phase and honestly, it was not easy. It was a struggle in the beginning to have a proper balance between studies and work as I had to give up on my social life and focus only on my priorities, but eventually everything fell into place and it was all worth my sacrifice and hard work. I decided to launch YBL since I wanted to offer the consumers of Bahrain a unique concept. I wanted YBL to be the first and largest five-star establishment of its kind to be launched in Amwaj and I can proudly say I have succeeded in doing that. Are any other members of your family involved in the business? I belong to a family with business in our blood line. I have inherited my business skills from my father Jameel Ali Salman, founder of JAS Group. My mother, Dr Hala Alsayed, is a well-known dental consultant and my elder brother Mohamed Salman will be opening an exclusive entertainment lounge this month. I did have an option to choose between following my father’s or mother’s footsteps, www.womanthismonth.com
so I decided to do a combination of both along with my personal charisma. How long did it take to get up and running from the time you decided to going into business? I always wanted to do something unique and different and, after endless travelling and research, I knew I wanted to propose to Bahrain a very different concept. Honestly, under the constant supervision of my father and his expert skills, I was lucky enough to launch my beauty lounge in a very short period of time. The beauty lounge is very glamorous looking, who designed it and where did you source your materials? My taste I would say is very bold and simple. ‘All white’ is my signature. The founder of Unisono, Mr Liam, who is also a great friend and entrepreneur, ensured he could put my ideas into life. With his expertise of taste and touch, he definitely knew what I was looking for. Are you a qualified therapist of any kind yourself? No; although I like to keep myself updated with the latest trends of beauty, fitness and cosmetics. I also like to study about professional personnel’s practices and tend to hire only the best. You offer the new cryotherapy, how did you hear about this? Have you tried it yourself? I have personally tried Cyro a while ago in the US and then again in Dubai. effective in cellulite reduction as intense cold temperatures help produce collagen which makes skin firm and tight. The process has anti-inflammatory properties, can decrease soreness in a post work-out state, is effective for anti-aging and muscular recovery, helps increase circulation and lymphatic drainage and strengthens muscle and joint functions. Its health benefits include boosting athletic performance, with increased circulation and lymphatic drainage. CRYOtheraphy reduces delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and is especially beneficial for athletes as it improves muscle strength and joint function. Among its many dedicated fans are Hollywood actress Demi Moore and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. Do you plan any other unusual therapies for the future? lives; I have been working day and night to give Bahrain something that is completely new. I believe in making ‘impossible’ things possible and that’s my motto in life. I cannot disclose further details, but I am trying my best to launch it by the beginning of 2016. Do you have plans for expansion? Currently I am working on two big new projects. After a detailed market study and several innovative ideas, my brother and myself will be launching two different businesses very soon. Ever since we were kids, my brother and I have always looked up at our father and worked closely with him. We eventually decided to become business partners and, ever since then, for the past two years our lives have revolved around our careers and we have got very deeply involved in my father’s group of companies. During the past two years we decided to conduct a revamp for our restaurants, Burgerland and lamarine seafood restaurant. During this phase, we also came to realise that the both of us make a really good team. By the beginning of 2016 my brother will launch an entertainment lounge which includes a gourmet restaurant and separate café.
The other project I have been working on for the past year and a half is related again to the beauty industry but more towards the medical side. We are also expecting to have a soft opening by the beginning of 2016. The reason it is taking so much time is due to the amount of research and study we have put into it. Travelling from one country to another, interviewing candidates and working hard on achieving the most luxurious interiors ever made in Bahrain; we are definitely looking forward to opening something different in Bahrain. What is your own favourite treatment and why? I personally have no favourite treatments as such. I love getting dolled up and glammed and I enjoy anything related to beauty such as hair, nails and tanning. I even love experimenting with treatments; if ever I come across anything good, I like to introduce it at YBL. How do you relax? What do you like to do in your spare time? I enjoy going to the gym or even for a jog by the beach. I have recently realised that a 20 minute jog a day would really release all my stress and tension from work. www.womanthismonth.com

Chocolate Just Got Better We all love chocolate right? Now the island is getting its own artisanal bar of chocolatey lovlieness that’s funky, Fair Trade and eco-friendly. May Mahmoud, founder of Bare, tells us more.
ay’s family started Tariq Pastries in the Kingdom more than 30 years ago. She says: “I grew up surrounded by chocolates and sweets at my family’s business, Tariq Pastries. When you are exposed to that world at a very young age you begin to develop a taste for fine ingredients and unusual flavour combinations.” She went on to live in Paris, where she trained as a pastry chef, and continues: “Paris is a laboratory of ideas when it comes to confectionery and I would spend my days exploring the offerings at the city’s many patisseries that would combine exotic flavours from all over the world such as Darjeeling-infused éclairs at Fauchon or Matcha-flavoured confections at Toraya. “When I returned to Bahrain, I started my own business, creating custom cakes and pastries that combined local flavours with the French pastry techniques I had learnt. But over time I also began to think about making that cross-cultural culinary experience accessible to a broader audience and, for me, the chocolate bar was the perfect starting point. “Bare Chocolates began life based on this idea. It was a dream shared by my brother Tariq and I, to create the Middle East’s first artisanal chocolate bar. During our travels we noticed the emergence of artisanal chocolate brands focused on quality ingredients. While doing our own research in Bahrain and the Gulf, we quickly discovered that the average consumer could tell the difference between cheap chocolate and premium chocolate.” The pair teamed up with a Swiss chocolatier and have just launched their first products into the market.

May Mahmoud May explains: “Bare Chocolates was born with a simple idea: To create a selection of chocolate bars featuring local flavours made with a combination of organic and Fair Trade ingredients and the classic techniques of Swiss chocolatiers. We were very much interested in a cross-cultural collaboration and looked to Switzerland, which has a long history and expertise in chocolate making. We wanted to tap into that know-how to offer consumers the highest quality product possible. We wanted to team up with a factory known for producing artisanal chocolate bars
made in small batches, with the cocoa content clearly indicated on the front of each wrapper.” It took several years of research and then a further two to find the right factory and ingredients. “The purpose wasn’t to grow quickly, but to establish a thoughtful and sustainable product,” says May. “Early on, we wanted to create a company committed to quality, environmental sustainability and ethical business practices. As a result our chocolate bars are Fair Trade certified to ensure the cocoa farmers we work with receive a fair price and are able to provide
their families with better nutrition, access to healthcare, education and re-invest in their farms. We have also partnered with Myclimate to reduce our carbon emissions by printing our packaging on recycled materials. Additionally, all carbon emissions which are generated during the manufacturing of Bare chocolates are offset by the Myclimate seal of approval. We also support a variety of Myclimate protected projects with a financial contribution. “As the first organic and Fair Trade chocolate bar in the Middle East, our founding principle is to produce the finest artisanal chocolate bars in the region, in an entirely ethical and sustainable manner.” Hundreds of studies indicate dark chocolate is a good source of antioxidants and flavonoids that promote healthy hearts, lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Bare’s premium dark chocolate has a high percentage of cocoa, which contains a multitude of vitamins as well as calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron. Being Fair Trade, it’s also certified GMO-free. Eating dark chocolate also releases serotonin which helps alleviate depression, reduce stress and boost energy. And, if you needed any more convincing, Bare comes in a range of flavours including dark chocolate infused with organic orange, candied ginger, lemon and black pepper. May adds: “We are constantly experimenting with new flavours, especially those reflecting the Gulf’s culinary traditions.” The line will initially be available at Tariq Pastries and it’s hoped to establish a network of retailers who align with company’s ethical company mission. g January 2016

What’s New?
ON THE REBOUND For those of us old enough to remember fitness TV shows featuring ladies in leg warmers and offensively bright Lycra, this 'new' workout will look familiar. The mini trampoline, or trampete, is making a comeback but it’s undergone a coolover and is now called a Rebounder. And gone are the days of simply bouncing up and down; workouts now include squats, hops and knee raises with the Rebounder’s action significantly reducing the impact of the movements, making the activity possible even for those who suffer joint pain. According to one expert, the jumping motion creates a force which opens and closes the lymphatic valves, encouraging lymphatic drainage, which removes toxins from the body. So, having fun, toning up and cleaning out, all at the same time. Can’t wait for this one to get here.

Fitness Trends
Some things we all know are good for us, others can come as a bit of a surprise. The ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) Health & Fitness Journal Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends for 2016 studied almost 3,000 responses to discover the top 10 ways we’ll be getting fit this year.
T
op of the list was wearable technology using fitness trackers, such as Garmin, Misfit and Fitbit, smart watches, heart rate monitors and GPS tracking devices. Next came body weight training. Relatively inexpensive, these programmes use minimal equipment, relying instead on the body’s own weight to provide resistance training. High-intensity training was a huge buzz phrase in the last few years and was number one on the 2015 list. Involving short bursts of high-intensity exercise followed by a short period of rest or recovery, it drew concerns from many in the fitness industry over possible injuries but, with the promise of quick results and short workout times, it remains popular despite dropping into third place. Traditional strength training using weights remains popular, in fourth place, but it is also being used more often alongside other forms of exercise as part of wider training and rehabilitation programmes. More of us will apparently be using educated, certified and experienced professionals to help us get fit this year; a trend that comes at number five on the list and is no surprise given the number of accreditations now available. This ties in with personal training, at number six, with more of us also expected to employ trainers in our homes or gyms and even as part of community groups. The next two entries on the list are also linked, with functional fitness, replicating actual physical activities someone might do as a function of her daily routine, coming in at number seven. This is defined as using strength
www.womanthismonth.com
training to improve balance, coordination, force, power and endurance to enhance a person’s ability to perform the activities of daily living. Health and fitness professionals often combine it with, number eight, fitness programmes for older people which, again, can be used to improve health, stability and longevity in an aging population. Coming is surprisingly low on the list, at number nine, is the combination of exercise and weight loss. It seems there is a trend towards emphasising calorie restriction alongside fitness training, with various organisations encouraging the combination. The final top 10 entry is yoga which, in its many and varied forms, seems to reinvent itself each year to stay an attractive form of exercise suitable for those of all fitness levels. Trends which made the second half of the list were: group personal training, worksite health promotions, wellness coaching,
outdoor activities, sport-specific training, flexibility and mobility rollers, Smartphone exercise apps, circuit training, core training and outcome measurements. While the list doesn’t provide any great shocks, the emergence of wearable technology in first place does show that more and more of us are making fitness a way of life and seeing exercise in relation to what we eat, how we sleep and bodily functions such as heart rate and blood pressure. There is also a message that weights, contrary to some women’s belief that they will end up looking like East German shot putters, are actually our friends, building strength and stamina and even helping us live longer. No matter how you choose to exercise in 2016, the important thing to remember is that there’s an activity for everyone, no matter what your age or fitness level. Get up and get going, we promise you’ll enjoy it – eventually! January 2016

hether you’re a fitness fanatic or not, healthy living should be at the top of everyone’s wish list. And to guide you on that path is the aim of the 6th Annual Health & Wellness Bahrain Expo 2016. Organised by the Bahrain Exhibition and Conference Authority (BECA), the exhibition will taks place from April 19-21. The event will showcase a variety of live demos for the public as well as help promote local and regional businesses including fitness clubs and spas. “Bahrain is home to a wide variety of businesses involved in the health services segment and we hope the expo will serve as a platform to raise the profile of their brands and to develop new opportunities for revenue growth,” says BECA chief executive officer Hassan Jaffar Mohamed. The healthcare industry in the Kingdom works to the highest and most professional standards in the region, providing an opportunity for consumers to expand their horizons and to see what options are available to them. Likewise, by bringing together professionals globally within the health and wellness market, BECA will utilise the

EAT YOURSELF HEALTHY
Eating healthily is about feeling great, having more energy, improving outlook and stabilising mood. It isn’t about strict dietary limitations that lead to starvation, living under society’s 'thin ideal' or depriving yourself of the food you love.
T
here is so much conflicting diet and nutrition advice that’s confusing. For every expert who recommends a certain food as good, you will find someone saying the exact opposite. By using the following simple tips, from clinical dietician Danah Quintana, you can cut through the confusion and learn to create a healthy diet that’s good for your body, mind and soul. Set yourself to success. Think about planning a healthy diet as a number of small, manageable steps – like adding a salad to your diet once a day – rather than one big drastic change. As your small changes become habit, you can continue to add more healthy choices. Eat in moderation. Eating in moderation means eating only as much food as your body needs. You should feel satisfied at the end of a meal. Moderation is also about balance. Despite what fad diets say, we all need a balance of protein, fat, fibre, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals to sustain a healthy body. Reduce sugar intake. Too much sugar causes energy spikes and has been linked to diabetes, depression and even an increase in suicidal behaviours in young people. Eat a rainbow of fruit and vegetables. They are low in calories and are nutrient dense, which means they are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre. Eat more fibre. Eating food fibre can help you stay regular, lower your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes and help you lose weight. Good sources of fibre include whole grains, wheat cereals, barley, oatmeal, beans and nuts, vegetables such as carrots, celery and tomatoes and fruits such as apples, berries, citrus fruits and pears. Eat more healthy carbohydrates. Choose healthy carbohydrates and fibre sources, especially whole grains, for longlasting energy. Whole grains are rich in phytochemicals and antioxidants, which help to protect against coronary heart disease, certain cancers and diabetes. Calcium for bone health. Your body uses calcium to build healthy bones and teeth, keep them strong as you age, send messages through the nervous system and regulate the heart’s rhythm. If you don’t get enough calcium in your diet, your body will take calcium from your bones to ensure normal cell www.womanthismonth.com
function, which can lead to osteoporosis. Good sources of calcium include milk, unsweetened yogurt, cheese, collard greens, kale, romaine lettuce, celery, broccoli, fennel, cabbage, summer squash, green beans, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, crimini mushrooms, black beans, pinto beans, kidney beans, white beans, blackeyed peas or baked beans. Put protein into perspective. Protein gives us the energy to get up and go – and keep going. While too much protein can be harmful to people with kidney disease, the latest research suggests that most of us need more high-quality protein, especially as we age. Eat plenty of fish, chicken or plant-based protein such as beans, nuts and soy. Enjoy healthy fats. Despite what you may have been told, not all fats are unhealthy. While 'bad' fats (found in processed foods) can increase your risk of certain diseases, 'good' fats (found in plants and fish) are essential to physical and emotional health. Foods rich in certain omega-3 fats, for example, can reduce
Clinical dietician Danah Quintana
your risk of cardiovascular disease, improve your mood and help prevent dementia. Eat less salt. Sodium is another ingredient that is frequently added to food to improve taste, even though your body needs less than one gram of sodium a day (about half a teaspoon of table salt). Eating too much salt can cause high blood pressure and lead to an increased risk of stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, memory loss and erectile dysfunction. It may also worsen symptoms of bipolar disorder. Use herbs and spices such as garlic, curry powder, cayenne or black pepper to improve the flavour of meals instead of salt. Be careful when eating out. Most restaurant and fast food meals are loaded with sodium. Some offer lower-sodium choices or you can ask for your meal to be made without salt. Buy unsalted nuts and add a little of your own salt until your taste buds are accustomed to eating them salt-free. Call 17 812-000. January 2016

OSTEOPATHY IN FOCUS
Osteopathy is a science based on the theory that many physical complaints and diseases are associated with disorders of the body’s bones, joints, ligaments and muscles.
R
oyal Bahrain Hospital’s (RBH) osteopath, Henry Aboagye-Brobbey, explains in detail.
BACK PAIN Back pain is one of the main reasons for people taking time off work and can be really annoying and painful. If you suffer from back pain, you might consider visiting an osteopath. In fact, latest research advises one to seek swift treatment for back pain in order to reduce its intensity and longevity. An osteopath can provide treatment to reduce your pain and advise you on how to adapt your posture and/ or behaviour in order to prevent recurrent episodes in the future. NECK PAIN AND HEADACHES A common occurrence in office and other sedentary workers, neck pain is usually caused by injury or poor postural behaviours. You may strain your neck by using bad posture to sit at your desk, type on your computer or watch television. Another common cause of neck strain is poor sleep positions and your osteopath may ask you about how many pillows you sleep with and whether your neck pain is worse any time after sleeping. Neck injuries most commonly involve whiplash such as that caused during car accidents or severe falls. Poor neck posture, muscle imbalances and unresolved injuries in the neck may lead to headaches. Osteopathy is able to treat the source of your headaches, thereby vastly reducing them. OSTEOPATHY DURING PREGNANCY AND FOR NEW MOTHERS Osteopathy can be useful when you are trying to conceive, are pregnant or have recently given birth. Practitioners can advise on ways to minimise any discomfort that might develop during your pregnancy. Pregnancy can lead to significant postural changes that put additional strains on your back and body. This is very common and can lead to the development of back pain. Osteopathic treatment could reduce this discomfort in your back caused by your change in posture as well as helping you to relax.
38
January 2016
SPORTS INJURIES Osteopathy can also be useful in the treatment of sports injuries such as sprains, tennis elbow or pain caused by repetitive strain. An osteopath can help with your recovery so that you can return to your chosen sport as quickly as possible through direct treatment to lessen the pain and advice you on how to reduce the risk of repeating the injury. TREATMENT Osteopathy treats the person rather than specific conditions using holistic and patient-

centred approaches. It offers a gentle way to help relieve such pain and stiffness without the need for medication and more invasive treatments such as surgery. Osteopaths work by massaging your soft tissues, which rebalances your body structure, and then advise you on how to alter your posture in order to retain this balance. Om Sweet Om Whether it is to slim down or fine tune the body’s engine, your new year’s health related resolutions could be fulfilled by the age old philosophy of yoga, finds Behnaz Sanjana.
I
t probably happens every time. The festivities of the season go on to become unsightly bulges and paunches that seem to refuse to leave your body, like little reminders of all your indiscriminate indulgences. So between despair (will I ever be able to wear that little black dress again?) and lofty resolutions that eventually lose fizz (I will trudge to the gym five times a week), there’s yoga. Yoga is a Sanskrit word, derived from the word yuj, which, in contemporary terms, is interpreted as ‘union’. Its primary purpose is to unite the mind, body, and spirit. Celebrities swear by the power of the practice – several of them attribute their svelte figures and their ability to cope with life’s upheavals to yoga. It’s a misconception that this approach for a healthy mind and body is only for flexible folks. Given time and consistency, your body will surprise you. We spoke to Master Yogi and founder of the acclaimed holistic centre Namaste Bahrain, Weam Zabar, to shoot down your apprehensions. SO, WHY YOGA? Weam says that yoga is a healing practice. “It doesn't only look at muscles. It works

The rewards from regular practice are manifold in comparison to the time and resources spent with organs, bones, joints, energy, mental wellbeing, emotional health, releasing fear, finding balance and living a more skillful and meaningful life.” The rewards from regular practice are manifold in comparison to the time and resources spent. WHAT’S YOUR STYLE? Yoga as a practice has developed and evolved over the decades. If you are baffled by all the various styles of yoga there are, Weam puts it in a nutshell: “There are more styles of yoga than those that moved to the West. In the West, the main style that is normally
referred to is Hatha Yoga, which involves the physical effort of Asanas (poses). Hatha Yoga is the branch from which many styles of yoga [Ashtanga, Vinyassa, power, yin, Bikram, Iyengar etc] have emerged.” She says there are also other schools of yoga that work towards the same goal: union of the mind, body and soul. Karma Yoga, for example, is based on selfless service, Bhakti Yoga is www.womanthismonth.com
Yoga is a constantly changing practice, it always has been. It is evolving and growing with time based on devotion and love for the divine, Jnana Yoga is the yoga of contemplation, Raja Yoga is the yoga of mastering the mind. THE WEIGHT LOSS QUESTION Who wouldn’t want to drop a dress size or two? For those of us who hate the very word ‘exercise’, Weam’s ideology is a beacon of motivation. “Yoga is not exercise. Yoga is a science of happiness. You will get stronger, more flexible, fitter and slimmer in the process but the main aim of yoga is to free the person from suffering.” Now how’s that for a jumpstart to get on to your yoga mat! TRENDING NOW The health and fitness industry is a dynamic one and the practice of yoga has also seen new variations of the original system. Versions such
has Power Yoga and Hot Yoga have already gained a solid fan base in the Middle East, but more challenging and bizarre practices like Stand-Up Paddle Yoga (done on a paddle board in water), AcroYoga (an acrobatic form done with a partner) and Anti-Gravity Yoga (done on a fabric swing suspended from the ceiling) are the newest trends that are fast catching on. To elaborate, Weam says: “Yoga is a constantly changing practice, it always has been. It is evolving and growing with time. There are many great teachers and practitioners that spend a great part of their lives studying yoga and trying to develop practices that could benefit and heal people. What is important is to find a practice that
speaks to the heart; a practice that encourages happiness, freedom and love.” NOT JUST PHYSICAL “Yoga looks at the person as a whole; the emotional self is neither separate from the physical nor the mental. It is well established that our mental and emotional state has a direct effect on our health. In the end, we all want to be happy and although we might think that we will be happy if we become thinner, richer, more popular, more famous etc, in the end happiness is a mental state”, enlightens our guru. Yoga works directly with the mind to release mental patterns that stop us from going to our original state of bliss and joy. AN IDEAL CLASS There are a few things Weam thinks are very important to look for in a yoga class. First and foremost is that the teacher must be certified. This is important so that he or she knows how to modify your practice as per personal situations, viz, injury, illnesses or other restrictions. Secondly, you should be able to practice most of your yoga class. “If the class is not catered to its students then it ends up being frustrating and maybe intimidating,” Weam points out. And lastly, if the class includes breathing, relaxing or meditation practices, then that's an extra bonus. Weam recommends that students give every yoga teacher a minimum of two chances before deciding to continue or finding another teacher. g

Reversing the Clock
We might not have access to the Fountain of Youth, but what we do have are innumerable products and treatments containing the same promise. WTM takes a closer look at skin-aging and ways that can actually slow it down. “You are never too old to become younger!” – Mae West
I
n the past few decades alone, the market for anti-aging products and services has grown into a giant global industry, the value of which is expected to reach USD191.7 billion by the end of 2019. This figure includes money spent on anti-aging cosmetics, plastic surgery and dermatology, and aspects of traditional medicine, such as anti-aging disease management. The number of botulinum toxin (BOTOX) treatments has risen up to 700 per cent in the USA alone since 2000, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. With increasingly stressful lives which see us battling deadlines, performance ratings, fast food, chronic pollution and sleep deprivation, the aging process seems to be starting earlier and at an accelerated pace. Add to this constant presence on social media and the need to look beautiful, young and celebrity-style glamorous has never been greater. Yes, market shelves are filled with products

that claim to be elixirs of youth, but take a moment to understand what makes some of us look younger, despite our age. Genetics has a major role to play but beyond that a lot lies in your own hands, in terms of how much care you take of yourself to stall fine lines and wrinkles. Yes, the operative word is ‘stall’ because aging is inevitable – It. Will. Happen! As we grow older the production of collagen and elastin, which are responsible for maintaining skin’s integrity and tone, decreases. Loss of elasticity, decrease or change in colour, fine wrinkling, thinning of layers and increased itchiness are all signs that your skin is aging and taking the rest of your body down (sagginess) with it. But managing this process with a good skin care regime and healthy lifestyle can work wonders, keeping you looking radiant for years. Here are some essentials you need to remember (and practise) to slow down signs of aging.
1) Wear Sunscreen: Rain or shine, this is one part of your skin-care regime that you absolutely cannot ignore. Apply a broadspectrum sunscreen that contains both UVA and UVB protection every day, half an hour before you step outside. This is your first line of defence against any sun damage or skin cancer. 2) Quit Smoking: In addition to several other much serious conditions, such as heart www.womanthismonth.com
disease and lung cancer, the first and most visible adverse effect of smoking is on your skin. When subjected to the toxic concoction of carbon monoxide, cyanide, tar, formaldehyde and other chemicals, our brain diverts vitamins away from your skin to be used elsewhere. Nicotine also reduces blood flow and hence less oxygen gets to the lower living layer of skin, or dermis, leaving your skin dry, flaky and less resilient to external stress. 3) Stay Hydrated: Drinking water gives you a radiant, healthy, younger-looking complexion. Our skin is made up of cells and skin cells, like any other cell in the body, are made up of water. Without water, they will certainly not function properly or at their best. So drink lots of it, cut back on coffee and soda and moisturise regularly. 4) Proper Rest: The expression ‘beauty sleep’ actually has some science behind it. The deepest stages of sleep are when your body produces the most growth hormone, which aids in cell and tissue repair. Sleeping well can make you look younger, decrease fine lines and dark circles and, in some cases, has even helped against conditions like eczema, acne or rosacea. 5) Use a Retinoid: Out of all of the ‘anti-aging’ ingredients available on the market today, retinoids are the only ones scientifically I MUST admit, I’m always pretty sceptical when asked to try yet another antiaging treatment particularly since, being a smoker who really does not drink enough water, I know I’m my own worst enemy. However, the Feeling Time treatment at Charm Salon in Juffair is a bit different. It piqued my interest because the products, from Italian company Farmogal, contain no paraffins, silicones or preservatives and, more importantly for me, there are no animal products and they’re not animal tested. I was welcomed by salon owner Tatiana, who carried out my treatment first giving my face a thorough milk clean using gentle, relaxing massage strokes. Next came a peel,
www.womanthismonth.com
shown to work on a molecular level. Their regular use improves skin texture and reduces dark spots as the compound speeds up skin cell turnover. Most importantly, they not only help to decrease the amount of collagen breakdown from sun exposure by preventing the rise of an enzyme called collagenase, but they also help to stimulate the production of new collagen 6) Eat Right: We are what we eat, and the first organ that reflects any change in diet is the skin. The more balanced your diet, the younger you'll look. And if you're not taking
which felt slightly gritty, a bit like dermabrasion. My skin was massaged for several minutes with a special substance containing hyaluronic acid, very important in skin rejuvenation, which Tatiana explained was to warm my skin prior to the next step. One of the main secrets of this treatment is a technique called ‘gomming’. The skin is first massaged with a vial of collagen rich cream and then after several minutes the substance becomes sticky and the massage involves manipulations which pull and stretch the skin as it adheres to the therapist's fingers. Fortunately, I’d seen the technique on Tatiana’s screen otherwise it might have come as a bit of a shock. It wasn’t uncomfortable but was certainly a very strange sensation to feel my skin being pulled, albeit
a multivitamin, start now. To keep skin happy, eat more oily fish (such as salmon), dark green vegetables (like broccoli and spinach), almonds, and walnuts. Drink lots of antioxidant green tea and stay away from refined sugar and alcohol. There are also many clinics that specialise in treatments that can rejuvenate your skin with facials and masks and wraps. In addition to the above, regular exercise and keeping your mind relaxed and stress free will go a long way to keeping you looking younger and feeling great.
gently, and, to be honest, I really didn’t expect it to produce a good result. The next stage was even stranger. My face was again massaged before being spread with a cooling mask. This is made from the something called Blugum which set into a kind of rubbery solid. Tatiana had advised me to close my eyes and mouth and, when she removed it, all in one piece, it was rather weird to see a perfect cast of my face, almost like something from a James Bond film.
The last step was the application of what is called a lifting shock serum. However, rather than shocking, this actually felt very soothing and calming and left me ready to face the mirror. Tatiana actually snapped before and after pictures and I could definitely see an improvement in the lines around my eyes, my skin also appeared marginally tighter so it’s a treatment I might recommend if you have a big night out coming up. However, it’s recommended at one session a week for four weeks followed by monthly updates for three months to reap the full benefits, and I could actually see that making a significant difference. What: Feeling Time facial treatment Where: Charm Salon Favourite Feature: The James Bond face mask.

HIGH ON BRUNETTES
This season, look for dark shades of intense brown then add some light to conquer the latest trend. Your locks will be the perfect match to your fashionable winter wardrobe.
T
ONI & GUY offers a wide range of ideas for dark brown hair with or without highlights. This shade is usually beautiful, shiny and rich in colour, however, you can always intensify its natural appearance. Although dark brown has a ton of depth on its own, adding a pop of
HIDDEN HIGHLIGHTS This style is subtle and perfect for those women who’ve never tinted or had the nerve to go for a big change in their tresses. The highlights are gentle and pop through to add some dimension to flat hair. If you have a warm brown colour all over and want to add a bit of light to warm up your shade, this is a perfect pick. A short layered haircut works really well here. And best of all? The style is very low maintenance. Tips: Go for this hairstyle if you are dark haired and looking to go lighter over time. A few peek-a-boo highlights are a great way to start.
light with subtle or bold highlights can transform brunette hair into a multi-dimensional masterpiece. If you are looking for ways to make your hair stand out from the crowd, TONI & GUY offers these stylish highlights:
OMBRÉ PERFECTION One of the biggest trend of the season, this style results in plenty of dimension and doesn’t force you to be a slave to your roots making it another low maintenance pick when opting for highlights. A gradual, natural looking ombré goes from dark to honey-toned ends and can be a good pair to virtually any skin tone. For maximum effect, this style works best on medium to long tresses, but can also look stunning on short locks if done by a skilled professional. Tips: if you have natural dark hair or have been colouring it this way, keep in mind that getting your ends as light as you want can be a bit of a process. It must be done gradually to protect the integrity of the hair.
TOTALLY ON TOP With this technique, the professionals add some caramel shades to the top of your dark brown hair to bring brightness around the face. This is a bit bolder stepping into the 'out there' colour category. Although the highlight pattern here is daring, the dimension added is kept in the brunette family, so it works well and doesn’t contrast that much. Depending on the current colour and the condition of your hair, this effect may be difficult to achieve. So be sure to consult your stylist to understand what is best to your hair. Tips: This look is a great choice for short hair. The colour combination will be more dramatic and bold, creating a beautiful frame.

CUTTING THROUGH CLUTTER If the last year was all about clutter make the new one about getting organised. Ankita Mamgain tells you how to start the New Year on an orderly note.
A
fter a long month of celebrations, January may seem a bit dull due to lack of activity. Hence many people make home improvement their pet project at this time of the year. It seems like the ideal thing to do – a fresh year calls for a refreshed look and, most importantly, it’s your chance to eliminate the clutter that an action-packed December leaves behind. Home organisation is one of those essential and ongoing tasks that is just as frustrating as it is gratifying. You might detest the idea of having to go through kitchen drawers or sort through the closets, but you know you’ll be pleased with the end result. BEDROOM We’ve all been there (I can definitely say that for myself); overflowing drawers, floors in disarray and a messed up bed. A new study warns that a messy bedroom disturbs sleep, can increase stress and aggravate mental illness. So in order to sleep and feel better, get cleaning. Start with the wardrobe; it’s the heart of a well kept bedroom. Go through the clothes and get rid of anything that doesn’t fit or you haven’t worn in the past few month. Be ruthless; if it’s too difficult to do it yourself, get help. Pick an organisational system for your
48
January 2016
clothing; all the pants in one area, collared shirts in another and dresses in another. You can even further break down categories by length, occasion or season. Get a good variety of hangers including trousers hangers and the non-slip ones. Now, if you’re channelling Monica Gellar, arrange the sorted clothes by colour. This makes it really quick to sort through your wardrobe and pick out what to wear. Shelf your bags or hang them on
either clothing hangers or hooks on the wall or a door. Keep drawers tidy by folding everything neatly (for as long as you can). Another place where things tend to pile up is the night stand, so choose one wisely with an in-built shelf or a drawer. Go for beds that have storage space, to hide away out of season clothing. Utilise the space at the footboard for storing blankets and linens. www.womanthismonth.com
HOME OFFICE With electronics, office supplies, papers, books, files and more, an office can quickly become cluttered and dysfunctional. No work can possibly happen if you spend half your time looking for things. To organise this space start with the electronics and any cables strewn about. You can use decorative storage boxes to hide away these unsightly must-haves. It can also be really frustrating to guess which plug belongs to which device. Add washi tape tags to avoid this confusion and keep the electrical extension board looking pretty. The wall space near the desk often remains unused. Optimise it by adding some wall pockets that can stow bills and other mail off your work space. In order to efficiently store old files and records, invest in a file cabinet or magazine holders and organise alphabetically or date-wise.
KITCHEN The hub of the home, the kitchen is often also one of its trickiest areas as it is prone to constant activity and perpetual mess. A challenge faced by anyone who’s ever tried to organise it has been the curious case of ‘the container and the lid’. If the right containers do match up with the available number of lids, organise them fast before this rare balance gets disturbed again. Start with discarding any old, damaged or pairless pieces. Then, instead of storing them in sets, which topple easily, separate the containers and lids into different baskets, resulting in more compact storage. Your Tupperware isn’t the only trouble maker in the kitchen; spices, cutting boards, pots and pans, lids and knives can also clutter up cabinets and drawers. Something that comes in really handy here is a label maker. Take the spices out of their original jars or packets and transfer them to new, identical ones, which will be easy to stack. Instead of a spice cabinet, you can even make a dedicated drawer for all your seasonings using mini mason jars with labelled lids for a space-savvy and pretty solution. Use cabinet systems designed specifically for pots and pans to keep all your cookware tidy. Even rails with S-hooks can be a functional and decorative way to store pots, especially if your kitchen is low on cabinetry. Use drawer organisers to separate cutlery and knives. www.womanthismonth.com
LIVING ROOM The living room, or family room, has a lot of different uses. This is where you plop down, hang out, decompress, read, play, watch TV and entertain. So keeping it organised at all times is a bit of a challenge. The best strategy is to work towards delaying the messing up process and speeding clearing-up time. If your front door opens directly into the living room, and each time you enter you leave a trail of bags, shoes, jackets, etc, add some “speed bumps” along the way that’ll curb your urge to offload instantly, all around the place. Perhaps a bench or chair to sit on to take off your shoes, hooks and floating shelves on the wall and a tray for collecting mail can all help. Get coffee and side tables with a lower shelf so you can spread your stuff when you want and
then quickly stack it up and put it in the bottom shelf if you need to tidy up immediately. Any furniture with hidden storage is a Godsend! You can store media, games, magazines and even shoes inside if you need to. If you have cupboards crammed with old VHS tapes or hundreds of CDs that are already loaded into your computer and other devices, it is high time to purge the old stuff. The discs you want to keep can be stored in a binder folder, or add them to the décor by placing them in racks near the screen. Shelves are really versatile and can change easily to suit your needs. Versatile and available in diverse styles, shelving units can be the answer to a host of family-room clutter concerns along with adding visual interest to the décor. January 2016

I’m Not Alone Being three or four years old in an expanding world can be daunting. By creating a friend to help her or him through this time your child is being both resourceful and ingenious says Dr Jinan Harith Darwish.
I
t is pretty common for children of about three or four years to have an imaginary friend. This may be another child or could be a magical person or an animal. Sometimes the imaginary friends change as the child grows older. Frequently, children who have imaginary friends are only children or the oldest child in the family; but having an imaginary friend does not mean that your child is lonesome. They are usually creative, imaginative children. As the child grows older the real world takes over and by the time he or she is going to school, the imaginary friend usually just quietly disappears. Imaginary friends are true to these children and this is quite different to lying. Imaginary friends are a part of normal development and rather than being a problem they can aid children to deal with some of the stresses in their lives. On occasion, an imaginary friend can help parents to see where a problem is. Now and then children may use their imaginary friends to evade doing something they don't want to. If the child continues to opt for the friend often, rather than doing things in the real world, it is helpful to have a look at what is going on in their life and think about ways to help. Here are some of ways you can respond to your child's imaginary friend: Allow your child take the lead in how you
www.womanthismonth.com
respond. If it is a private relationship and the child wants you to stay out of it, follow that lead. If you are asked to join in the play, then do so. Typically you will be asked to make room for the friend in different ways such as
providing a seat in the car, not lying on the friend in a bed and maybe providing things like a fork or plate for the friend. While accommodating the way your child wants you to act towards the friend, it is useful if you don't get too caught up and take over or add your own ideas to the story. It helps your child to work out what is real and what isn't if you stay grounded in the real world most of the time. If you take over or add to the story, you are taking over your child's need to create his or her own story. For example, if the friend is always to blame when the child does something wrong, it will be helpful to take it out of a 'blame' situation. For example, if the child says his naughty teddy broke the plate, you could say that mistakes are to learn from and that you will help him to clean up the mess for the teddy. As your child gets older, try to offer lots of enjoyable experiences with real children and real things so the friend will progressively not be as fascinating or attractive as the real world, and will disappear. g January 2016

Method Take the lamb loin; trim and cut it into a cylindrical shape, wrap tightly with cling film and refrigerate for 15 minutes. Then blanch it for five minutes and keep to the side. Blanch half the spinach for 10-15 seconds and then dip in ice cold water to retain colour and crispness. Take the chicken breast, 60ml cream, egg, seasoning, herbs and remaining spinach; blend all together until it reaches a smooth and creamy texture. Spread cling film on a flat surface (kitchen counter or table) and spread with a thin layer of chicken mince (farce), add some blanched spinach on top and finally the lamb loin. Roll the cling film with all the ingredients into a cylindrical shape and refrigerate for 15 to 20 minutes. Take a sauce pan and add water, celery, leeks, carrot puree, onion, bay leaf and pepper corns. When the water starts boiling, reduce the heat to simmer. Dip the ready roll
into water and let it poach for 15 minutes, remove from heat and separate the cling film; slice it as per your choice. Carrot mash Boil carrot slices till they become very tender, with salt and pepper and a spoonful of butter with herbs. Remove and make a paste in food processor. Then take a saucepan, add butter, pour in the mashed carrot and cook for few minutes till the paste thickens. Sun dried Tomato Sauce Take 100g of squeezed sun dried tomatoes; add 20ml of cream with thyme. Put it in food processor and blend till it becomes a fine puree. Toss the vegetables in butter in a hot pan. Place the sliced poached lamb with chicken farce, with carrot mash, vegetables, cherry tomatoes and sun dried tomato puree. Serve hot. www.womanthismonth.com

Whipping Up a Culinary Storm This iconic restaurant has offered islanders fine cuisine of the Orient for the past 14 years. Ankita Mamgain takes you through her experience at the eatery.

orn and raised in India, I share a special bond with Monsoon. These winds swell up with moisture while travelling over the Arabian Sea and then hit the parched Asian soil as harbingers of life, respite, joy, enthusiasm and optimism. They have escorted the West into the Orient for centuries, so it’s only fitting that a restaurant that instantly transports you to a tropical pagoda, while still in the middle of the Kingdom, should be called Monsoon. I had a short escape to this exotic haven with a friend during my lunch break, and was left just as satisfied as, perhaps, the rains leave the thirsty soils. Located in the heart of Adliya, you will find yourself walking into a magnificent Balinese palace as you step through the restaurant’s heavily panelled wooden doors. Asian artefacts and Zen-like calmness dominate the ambience. It’s a tough call, deciding where to sit in this stunning restaurant. The dining hall comprises a spacious elevated platform surrounded by water on all sides, forming a narrow moat of sorts. You can also opt for the beautiful patio, which boasts soothing elements such as running water, lush foliage

and pebbles. We chose to stay indoors. I must also mention that it is one of the few Asian restaurants that plays good contemporary Asian music and even knows the right volume level. Opened in 2000, Monsoon pays tribute to the cultural wealth of the Orient. This respect extends beyond the ambience into the menu and service. Promoted as a destination for authentic cuisine from the Far East, Monsoon serves Thai, Japanese and Vietnamese food. The menu is diverse and eclectic. We ordered the mixed appetiser platter, which consists of shrimp toast, Thai spring roll, Toong Thong, which are minced shrimp and water-chestnut wrapped in Chinese pancake, and Vietnamese rice dumplings called Banh Coun Thit. Each preparation offered a profusion of flavours and was a delicious prelude to our main course. My fried salmon fillet topped with lemon grass and garlic sauce and served with steamed rice vermicelli was exquisite, laden with sharp flavours of garlic and lemon grass complemented beautifully by the perfectly cooked fish. My friend’s Nua Pad Prik Sod was a
beautifully balanced medley of textures and tastes comprising of stir fried beef tenderloin with vegetables, fresh chilli garlic and spices. It was served with steamed rice. Thoroughly impressed by everything so far, we ordered desserts, which turned out to be the absolute winners of the afternoon. I ordered crème brûlée, a house speciality. Served with raspberry puree and strawberry, it is a unique take on the popular sweet. The other dessert, Pattani, is a new addition on the menu and is delicious as a dream. How does vanilla macaroon topped with hazelnut, caramelised apple served with vanilla ice cream and hot hazelnut and caramel sauce sound to you? Chef Niki, who has recently joined the restaurant, has breathed new life into the menu and is planning to introduce more dishes in January. With its eclectic menu, warm service and an exceptional ambience, Monsoon doesn’t just rain good times; it will brighten your day like a rainbow.

Gazing Raphael brings the latest on the stars’ radar to your zodiac sign. Capricorn Dec 22 – Jan 20
You are about to be given a major task at work and the way in which you execute your role could prove to be a defining moment in your career. Your sign is amongst the fastest thinking and most easily adaptable and yet you can on occasions suffer from a lack of self belief that has in the past held you back. This time, something tells me the outcome will be different once you grasp not only the magnitude of the task but also the opportunities that it can deliver you, .
Pisces Feb 20 – Mar 20
A battle of wills with a neighbour or former close colleague – continues to rage. Things might even turn nasty so don’t try to find a happy medium because in this case it doesn’t exist! On the home front a young child’s health gives you cause for concern but you may be able to alleviate a lot of the problem simply by looking at their diet. It could be a simple case of removing something obvious.
Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20
Good things come to those who work hard and 2016 will kick off in the best way possible for your sign as you begin to reap the rewards of a fabulous 12 months. Property has been the key deciding factor, although you have also enjoyed financial benefits through careful planning and shrewd work investments. All in all this is a great way to start the year and right now it doesn’t look like changing any time soon so

January 2016
Leo Jul 24 – Aug 23
There seems to be a lot of conflict in your life right now and much of it has to do with a split in the family. You would be advised to deal with this issue sooner rather than later and organise a meeting of all parties. This dispute has spread a lot of restlessness in those closest to you who are clearly feeding off your concerns.
Virgo Aug 24 – Sept 23
Someone has a crush on you but you are currently too wrapped up in your own complicated world to realise it. Fortunately, an upcoming event is going to change that and all will be revealed at a wedding this February. Those of you who attend alone will not be leaving the same way and those of you who are attending with a partner may find your resolve severely tested.
Aquarius Jan 21 – Feb 19
Friendships will come under close scrutiny this month and you may find that loyalties are tested in what is sure to be a rather heated set of exchanges. The main issue lies with a bond of trust that someone close to you feels you have broken. Although you may be completely innocent of their accusations, it looks like being a tough challenge to convince them otherwise. It could be that jealousy is guiding the hand that drives the wedge between you now, from a third party as yet unknown.
you signed up for may not be what you have to deliver and there are going to be a number of personality issues raised that will make the whole deal a lot more complicated. On the relationship front a struggling affair is going to draw out the pessimist in you and it could lead to a difficult decision.
Libra Sept 24 – Oct 23 enjoy the positives whilst they are there.
Taurus Apr 21 – May 21
The New Year gives you a new perspective for 2016 and you are likely to enter a completely different mind-set and consider a switch of focus as far as your career is concerned. Financially things should be a lot more stable so the real driver could be more about getting back to your roots with those important ambitions and creative desires set to dominate. Although you have a successful role in your current position, your heart lies in by the imagination rather than business.
Gemini May 22 – Jun 21
Could it be that you’re actually having to admit defeat as far as a battle of wills with a young person is concerned?! You’ll be surprised to discover that the youngster is wrestling with his or her own demons and the only answer is conversation. On the health front you need to look at dealing with a troubling back complaint because the treatment you’ve been getting so far isn’t working.
Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 23
You’re going to be in party planning mode this January as you are tasked with organising a special anniversary gathering. However, what
If you are thinking about making a big-ticket purchase this month then think carefully about what you are getting and exactly why you are getting it. Work-wise things have been slow of late, due mainly because of matters outside of your control but a growing business relationship with a technical slant could help you increase profits and direct your focus better.
Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 22
You have had some major financial hurdles to negotiate of late but it seems that, at long last, you are emerging from the worst of it. You possess a drive that is possibly unequalled by any other sign and it is this 'never-say-die' attitude which has seen you triumph. It is also worth remembering that a partner has proved very supportive and you should not forget to demonstrate your gratitude.
Sagittarius Nov 23 – Dec 21
This month sees an emotional struggle within you, which may threaten to tear a relationship apart. You may find yourself secretly wishing for a love from your past to be rekindled but do not fall into the trap of trying to repeat former glories. A fine or debt you believed you had escaped will catch you up and will contribute to making this month highlight a shortness of funds. Money you thought was coming to you will also not materialise. www.womanthismonth.com
