EDITOR’S NOTE
t's the start of a new year and, if you're anything like me, you're probably wondering where on earth 2017 went. As we get older, the years seem to pass by more quickly and we, almost inevitably, try to cram more into each day. With that in mind, I loved reading Ouiam Charkani El Hassani's column this month. She's urging us all to slow down and enjoy the journey and I can't help but think she has a point. As always, for many of us the dawn of a new year brings about the desire to get fit and maybe lose a few of those festive kilos. Our main feature this month takes a look at the latest fitness trends and I must say I'm really looking forward to trying a few of them - I mentioned bungee fit on these pages a few months ago, so I'm delighted to share that it's coming to Bahrain, hopefully by March. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find WaterWalkerz on the island too, but maybe I'll just steer clear of that one. Our interview section this month includes a bit of a scoop, a chat with the newly-crowned Miss Bahrain, Fawzia Abdulredha Nadhar, who managed to answer my many questions while she was in Cairo competing in Miss Arab World. I also spoke to an inspirational lady lawyer, Aysha Mutaywea, who's crusading for women's empowerment, and Behnaz caught up with Rosaline Roy, founder of the island's only all-women Toastmasters group. On our Homes pages you'll find Behnaz is taking the New Year spring cleaning vibe very seriously as she lays out a whole bunch of eco-friendly (and wallet-friendly) cleaning ideas. And, in Travel, I've lined up some fabulous retreats if you fancy a break for both body and soul - Peru's definitely on my list. As always we've got our regular round-ups of fashion and beauty news plus styling and hair tips. Fernanda has really gone to town on the winter fashion wear. From head scarves to woolly neck warmers and a cowgirl vibe, can you tell she's heading Stateside and looking forward to a bit of cool weather shopping? We've introduced a funky new layout on our Get The Look pages and I'd love to know what you think, so why not contact me by email or on our social media pages. I hope you enjoy this month's issue and wish you a very Happy New Year from all at Woman This Month.

Your Shout are, passion and determination can take you places. If young ladies of this generation have the same approach to their work and lives, the sky is their limit. I hope you keep motivating us with stories of ambitious women who set an example for the world. Tara, Jannusan.
I loved the gift pages in your magazine last month! There’s not only the usual His and Hers, but you also spared a thought for little ones and fun miscellanea in keeping with the mood and spirit of the season. Thanks WTM! You made me feel that Christmas is finally here. And now I can’t wait to see what’s under the tree for me! Simone, Saar. The write-up on Ibada Ahmed was very inspiring. It just goes to show that no matter from where you come, what you have learnt and how old or young you
I suffer from dry lips, no matter what the season, and more so in the winter. The beauty tips for carrying off a perfect pout have come in handy. They’re right when they say a bold matt colour is hardest to pull off when your lips are not at their very best, but I absolutely love dark shades for my lips. So I’ve started following the tips and I already see a difference. And yes, the pointer about using highlighter on the bottom lip for a fuller effect is great. Sana, Diplomatic Area.
The Bitcoin Bubble Cryptocurrencies are digitally created currencies, and Bitcoin is the best known of its kind. Instead of cash being regulated by a central or federal bank, cryptocurrencies are administered by thousands of computers networked all over the world. This decentralisation is what makes cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin so revolutionary. Other cryptocurrencies such as Ripple, Litecoin and Ethereum use similar technology and have also gone up in value. In tech-friendly San Francisco, there are many merchants who accept Bitcoins as well as cash, credit and debit cards. And, like regular money, you can keep cryptocurrencies in a wallet. Whatstrending.com Save The Species Officials in North America say it's time to consider the possibility that endangered right whales could become extinct unless new steps are taken to protect them. North Atlantic right whales are among the rarest marine mammals in the world, and they have endured a deadly year. The US’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has said there are only about 450 of the whales left and 17 of them have died in 2017. The animals give birth in temperate southern waters and then head to New England and Canada every spring and summer to feed. All of this year's deaths were off of the coasts of New England and Canada. www.abcnews.go.com

To Market, To Market
Every Saturday morning between December and April, the Budaiya Botanical Gardens are alive with the buzz of the Bahrain Farmers Market. Find loads of fresh greens, fruit and vegetables and have a leisurely breakfast at the location. The market promotes Bahrain's agricultural products and highlights the development taking place in the Kingdom's farming sector. It also aims to aid the sustenance of Bahraini farmers through this trade system, prepared by the Agriculture and Marine Resources Department.
Namaste Bahrain will be hosting two events with Max Strom, who is a global teacher, speaker, author and trainer. ALL CHANGE IN THE MAGIC KINGDOM So, just weeks after the announcement that women will be allowed to drive, Saudi Arabia’s emergence into the 21st century continues with the news that females are to be granted access to sports stadiums. And NBC reported that, in another first, a female singer, Lebanese artist Hiba Tawaji, took to the stage for a solo public concert for the first time in the country’s history. Thousands attended the historic, all-women event and danced to renditions of Celine Dion, as well as Arab classics. It seems the crusading Crown Prince, known as MBS, has his sights firmly set on a more modern and inclusive future — I truly hope his vision is allowed to succeed.
UP THE LADIES Perhaps it should be no surprise that feminism is Merriam-Webster dictionary’s Word of the Year, with searches of the term up 70 per cent on last year. The renewed interest comes in the wake of numerous high-profile sex assault scandals, which sparked the #MeToo campaign; the Women’s March in Washington following the inauguration of President Trump; and TV shows and movies with strong feminist themes such as Wonder Woman. Whatever the reason, it’s a very welcome development that people (hopefully young women) are once again taking interest in something that seemed to have gained itself a reputation as the preserve of the ‘loony left’. For the record, the dictionary defines feminism as “1: the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes” and “2: organised activity on behalf of women's rights and interests.” Can’t argue with that!

WATCHING THE PENNIES I'm rather excited that those lovely folks at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay have decided to help my New Year's beauty resolutions along with some major discounts on high-end skincare. Till the end of December, there's 10 per cent off when you purchase one item from brands such as Ila, Sodashi, Aloe Up, MCCM or Coola. Buy two or three items and the discount jumps to 20 per cent. Four or more and you'll save 30 per cent. I feel a bit of a credit card spree coming on.
Clever food scientists and agriculturalists have come up with a stoneless avocado. And the slightly smaller version of the fruit is being hailed as the 'Holy Grail'. Apparently surgeons in the UK are welcoming the development in the hope they will reduce cases of so called 'avocado hand' – knife injuries sustained when cutting into the fruit. I must admit, I’m finding it quite hard to take this story seriously. I mean, really, 'avocado hand' is a thing? And, don’t get me wrong, I love avocados as much as the next girl, but, Holy Grail, seriously? When they develop an avocado (with or without stone) that can magically make me a size 12, then, and only then, does it deserve the accolade of Holy Grail!
BRAVO MACRON This tale, pun fully intended, has two heroes. In a meeting with staff earlier this year, French President Emmanuel Macron brought along his rescue dog, Nemo. As the head of state chatted with his junior ministers, they were disturbed by the unmistakeable sound of the dog relieving himself in a centuries-old fireplace. Now, any dog owner will know the cringeinducing embarrassment when one’s canine companion puts a paw spectacularly out of place. But the president, much to his credit, was completely unphased and laughed along with his colleagues saying they had elicited the dog’s uncharacteristic behaviour. Big Brownie points to Mr Macron – he rescued Nemo from a shelter, takes him to work and doesn’t care when he pees during meetings!

Erinaceous
This is a strange one; it refers to something or someone who resembles a hedgehog. If someone ever says that you are looking quite erinaceous today, you know now to give them a penetrating, evil glare. URBAN COWGIRL
It’s rodeo time in the busy streets of the city. Embroidered and plaid shirts, silver-buckle belts and the most-wanted piece of the season, cowboy boots, are taking you for a ride. HEAD SCARF COUTURE During the autumn and winter 2017 fashion weeks we witnessed the first hijab-wearing model, Halima Aden, walk at Yeezy and Max Mara. This is a sign of inclusion and diversity in an industry where standardised patterns are constantly repeated. The Somali-American model has signed with IMG models, the same agency as Gigi Hadid, Ashley Graham and many other famous names in the field. Which means that we will see her flaunt her way in other catwalk shows and ad campaigns in the future.

eiko’s 2017 Premier collection offers a wider range of designs than ever before with two design themes, each expressed in a series of watches for both men and women, inspired by the creative tension between the classical and the modern. By taking these very different influences and putting them together in Seiko’s trademark manner, the beautiful lines and details of the Premier designs are born. The slim, refined watch is tailored for evening wear. It has all the hallmarks of a classic dress watch but with modern detailing. The case is sleek and simple and the hands are long and sharp, lending a timeless feel to the device. This technological marvel is powered by the movement of the wearer’s body. Such is the advanced energy management technology of the Kinetic Perpetual caliber that, even when unused, the watch adjusts to the precise time and date for up to four years. The device's perpetual calendar is correct to the year 2100. Other highlights include indicators showing the month, leap year, power
save function and time relay system to preserve the accurate time up to four years. No battery replacement is required. Every solar watch is powered by eco-friendly light energy and has an inbuilt energy depletion forewarning function. The bracelet is substantial and all the links are solid steel, but, once on the wrist, it feels light and comfortable, thanks to the perfect design of each element and the high-precision manufacturing of every component. Neckerchief. A small squared piece of cloth that is usually tied in a knot around the neck. It can also be called a bandanna and be worn around the head like a headband. A mandatory accessory for stewardesses.

January 2018
Square. The difference between this type and the neckerchief is its size. This one requires a big squared fabric and is usually worn folded in half keeping the triangle part hanging in the chest area. Choose a lightweight fabric for a swanky effect.

Who would imagine that a simple piece of cloth could be so versatile? Fernanda Langhammer explores the variety of scarves and offers cool tips on how to wear them.
Oblong. Probably the most popular of them all. It is a long rectangle with or without fringes at the ends. This is also the best shape for playing around in most different ways. Choose this to add a smart detail to your office suit or denims and white tee.
Infinity. This scarf is a closed loop of fabric that is worn loosely around the neckline. A thicker fabric is the right choice to compose the style at its best. Choose a wool or warm type of cloth to keep you cosy!

Neck Warmer
DURING the cold days there are two parts of my body that I have to cover otherwise I freeze to death (the extra drama is intentional) — my neck and my ankles! (I used to love leg warmers, such a shame they are not a huge thing anymore as in the eighties). My ankles situation I usually solve with long and thick socks paired with lengthy trousers. In the neck department I can go as creative as I want! Almost all labels offer scarves in their lines, ranging from huge shawls to cute neckerchiefs. So many fabrics and designs to choose from that having only one is the same thing as owning just one pair of shoes (such a crime!). My love affair with this neckwear comes from my teen days and by adulthood it had become a habit and part of my style. I find it difficult to wear them during the hot season, it doesn’t feel comfortable, but sometimes it is worth the suffering in the name of fashion. I also take into consideration that they can be quite convenient in the chilly corridors of malls and supermarkets. However, when the breeze starts to blow across the island, I know it is time to take them from the bottom drawer and let them flow freely in the wardrobe. You can add that little pizzazz to your look, use your scarf for religion reasons or just for the sake of keeping your neck warm. Not only do they come in an array of shapes and colours, they can also be tied in numerous ways. Have fun finding different knots for your favourite piece!

Skinny. Just like the name suggests, this is a thin cloth casually thrown around the neck. If you choose a fine fabric, it can add a quirky detail to an evening dress. The only thing here is that you can’t count on it for warmth.

Rule Britannia. Alexa Chung is a British TV host, model, writer and, most recently, a designer; she speaks fashion with a very English accent. Her style is traditional and provocative just like the brands that showcase their work on the London catwalks. The black flared denim gets an upgrade with a tailored double-breasted coat and the platform sandals become wearable during the cold season when paired with black socks. A formula that sounds a bit off, but Chung makes work. The blue gingham shirt gives that little funky detail, just like the unmistakable British humour.

The prints usually come on dark backgrounds to set the tone for the shorter days and longer nights. They are bolder than ever, coming in realistic 3D and intricate bouquets. The creations from the Vietnamese designer Nguyen Cong Tri are breathtaking, with different types of plants blooming on the backs of coats and dresses. Gucci went deeper with radiant and welldefined vine, while Tory Burch made blooms pop in shiny gold. Complex shaped earrings are just the thing to enhance that boring look or to complement a tailored outfit. The small detail becomes a statement and steals the scene. Delicate buds are imprinted on nails and the artistic make-up industry feels inspired by floral colours and shapes for a beyond-imagination composition. Pick your favourite flowers and make your own fashion garden.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE INFLUENCERS The region’s style influencers are getting their own TV show, which was due to launch on E! as we went to press. Expected to be called My Fabulous M.E., it will follow six local social media names going about their day-to-day lives. It will feature some of the Gulf’s biggest style stars: Dubai-based Hadia Ghaleb, Lebanese Maya Ahmed (pictured), who also lives in Dubai, Kuwaiti Fatima Almomen, Dana Al Tuwarish, who is known for her old-school glamour, Nour Arida, from Beirut, and fellow Lebanese blogger Lana El Sahely. The show will initially be a three-parter, produced by Sugar Rush Productions, and will focus on the women’s business dealings and family lives.

Gucci will be holding its Cruise 2019 fashion show on the ancient site of Alyscamps, in Arles, France, on May 30. Les Alyscamps is a UNESCO World Heritage site with one of the most renowned Roman necropoleis, which will provide a remarkable backdrop for Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele’s latest offering. This follows his previous Cruise presentations that have taken place in other culturally significant locations, including the DIA-Art Foundation in New York City, the Cloisters at Westminster Abbey in London and the Palatina Gallery in Florence’s Palazzo Pitti.
BELLA GETS POLITICAL Model Bella Hadid showcased her Palestinian heritage and took to the streets to join protestors demonstrating against Donald Trump’s controversial decision to name Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The catwalk favourite had apparently been at a nearby event and joined the bannerwaving protestors, still looking glamorous in a red dress and white coat. But though her heart might have been with the cause, she came under fire for staying just three minutes before being whisked away in a chauffeur-driven car.

Religious Robes New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art will look at the synergy between religious art and contemporary couture for its next major fashion exhibition. Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination will be a joint production between The Met's Fifth Avenue location and The Met Cloisters – the museum's satellite location at the northern tip of Manhattan, which exhibits medieval art. The exhibition will trace the history of garments depicted in Catholic art, and reveal how some of today's biggest designers have been influenced by the imagery and ideas presented in centuries of ecclesiastical artefacts. The Costume Institute, based at the museum, is partnering with The Met's Department of Medieval Art to organise the show. www.womanthismonth.com

Newly crowned Miss Bahrain, Fawzia Abdulredha Nadhar, capped a weekend of celebrations by clinching the second runner-up place in the Miss Arab World competition. She told WTM about her journey.

T
he 23-year-old Bahraini national is currently pursuing a degree in business studies at the American College in Dubai and had previously done some modelling work before applying to the competition in which the country winner was chosen through an online process. She travelled to Cairo, where the Miss Arab World final takes place, and was delighted to be officially designated Miss Bahrain on Thursday, December 14, just two days before the big final took place. Speaking exclusively to Woman This Month, in her first interview, Fawzia explained what makes Miss Arab World different from other contests, since it looks at the whole person. “The whole competition has taken more than 10 days. It is not only based upon the girls’ appearance and beauty,” she says. “There has been a cookery contest where we had to produce a national dish and a catwalk where we were judged on our ability to walk and comport ourselves on the runway. Furthermore, we have been interviewed by the Egyptian press to discuss various www.womanthismonth.com

current issues. I also had an interview with a prominent Egyptian plastic surgeon and was asked my views on cosmetic surgery. I’m not sure that he expected my reply!” A complete novice in the pageant world, Fawzia adds: “This [Miss Bahrain] is the first beauty contest I have ever entered, though I have done some modelling in the past. There were various reasons why I entered. Frankly I thought I stood a good chance of winning and hoped the title would be useful in helping to promote my perfume and personalised robe businesses that I am currently working on while I also complete my degree in business studies. Moreover, I wanted to represent my country and promote Bahrain.” She was one of 18 entrants for the Miss Bahrain title and there were 16 country competitors, from across the region, in the Miss Arab World final. The jury included Hanane Nasr, the Egyptian founder of the pageant, Egyptian artist Mohammed Nour and Kuwaiti TV presenter Halimeh Boland among others. Moroccan, Sherine Hossni took the crown while Rania bin Ashoush from Algeria was first
runner-up. The pageant world has been rocked in recent days with revelations that the Miss Iraq contestant in the Miss Universe competition has been forced to flee her home after posing for a selfie with Miss Israel. Contests have also come in for criticism with Miss Saudi Arabia, Malak Youssef, forced to pull out of Miss Arab World after being slated on moral grounds. However, Fawzia says: “I am aware that beauty contests are frowned upon by some people. If the objection is on moral grounds it is unfounded. There is no swimsuit section, girls only appear in their national dress. Furthermore, we have to abide by very stringent rules and are accompanied by bodyguards everywhere. If the objection is based upon female exploitation, then I can honestly say that no-one is coerced into doing this and objectors don’t have to participate nor watch it. It is a question of personal choice.” Speaking before the grand final she told WTM: “Whatever the outcome it has been a very interesting experience, all part of life’s rich tapestry.” January 2018

T
en years qualified and now resident partner at Mena Chambers Bahrain law firm, Aysha is a passionate woman who puts her all into her work and strives to empower young female practitioners in the Kingdom and the MENA region. But, though her speciality is international arbitration and high claim litigation, which has taken her round the globe, there’s another aspect of her career, aside from the standard 12-hour days, that she takes equally seriously – awareness of the impact of her actions. She explains: “I think people underestimate the relevance and importance of their own presence in a given situation. Our actions and reactions form the framework of society and culture. We define what is acceptable and what is not. I think we are all guilty of viewing our lives and careers in a very simplistic and monotonous way, but we should all be conscious of the impact of our thoughts and actions. For lawyers, that’s even more important.” She was influenced to join the profession by her father, explaining: “He’s not a lawyer but he is the epitome of integrity, morality and honesty. He sacrificed a lot of things because he believes in his cause. He raised me with high principles and ethics and more importantly a sense of collective responsibility. He taught me at a young age how one life can affect another and why it is important for us as humans to work together towards achieving our collective goals. I believe any person can make a change by

"Every woman should speak up and express her thoughts. Fill the room with your presence and be proud of it" creating disruptions and challenging norms. Of her support for women both personally and professionally, she says: “Every woman should speak up and express her thoughts. Fill the room with your presence and be proud of it. It is important that women support each other and have a voice.” She adds that, having become increasingly interested in women’s issues and how they are treated in the region, she began researching groups working towards women’s empowerment. “I discovered that they were all addressing the issue in the context of women in the traditional role within the family,” says Aysha. “That’s fine, but women are more than just wives and mothers. I wanted to tackle the issue from a wider perspective. I wanted to start from a human perspective beyond typical social structures” She believes part of the problem is within the education system which she claims doesn’t inspire students, particularly girls, to question, wonder and imagine. Adding: “Even when women are allowed to imagine, they think
within the terms imposed by society – being a good mother, a good wife – why can’t a woman just be a brilliant philosopher, maybe a brilliant inventor or [tongue in cheek] a great lawyer? “Despite the Kingdom’s reputation as one of the most liberal in the Gulf, women are still facing challenges and discrimination. What’s striking to me is that women don’t seem to be aware of it and they just ‘settle’. My message to all women is 'The only limits are those of your own imagination. Be aware of your freedom. Believe in it and embrace it. Don’t just settle for the norm'.” Aysha is proud of the work done at Mena Chambers Bahrain and continues: “We provide a platform for the professional and personal development of young female practitioners in Bahrain. We support and hire women in the firm as part of our contribution towards bridging the gender gap.” The company provides internships to the University of Bahrain and Royal University for Women and allows students access to its legal library. Students also learn about the potential career paths in law through their experience at the firm. Aysha provides mentorship to a number of students and assists as part of the mentorship committee for the Middle East Pre Vis Moot Arbitration Competition. She concludes: “I think we all have to take responsibility for trying to inspire and more importantly be a positive change in society, and that’s what we’re trying to do.” g www.womanthismonth.com

ack in 2002, a friend suggested to Rosaline Roy Charlie that they go and see a Toastmasters meeting. Knowing nothing about it, she went along to find out for herself. “I saw how the speakers talked and the meeting was conducted, and I signed up for it that very evening,” Rosaline says. “I was a homemaker at the time, and felt it was the right place for me to improve my public speaking skills and develop as an individual.” Toastmasters International is a non-profit network of clubs that teaches public speaking and leadership skills in a supportive learnby-doing environment, allowing members to set and achieve goals at their own pace. It is present in 144 countries and has over 350,000 members worldwide. In 2005, the idea for a Toastmasters club exclusively for ladies in Bahrain began to blossom, and Angels Toastmasters Club was born, of which Rosaline is the founding president. She has served three terms as the club’s president since then, and has also taken on various other roles such as area and division director, as well as district administration manager. Currently, she plays the role of mentor for the club. She says: “Ours was the first ‘ladies only’ Toastmasters club in Bahrain. I strongly believe that women are born with talents that they fail to recognise. Angels Toastmasters Club gives women a platform to come out of their shells, identify their skills and talents, and showcase and polish them to transform them into confident speakers and vibrant leaders. We do invite men for our various assignments and we compete in regional contests along with the other clubs, but the core club is by the ladies, for the ladies.” Rosaline believes that her association with Toastmasters has advantaged her more than she expected. She explains: “Being a part of the club can help you develop your unique identity. I got the confidence to do more with my life; and today, people look to me as a good leader and guide.” She was the third woman in Bahrain to hold the title of Distinguished Toastmaster, one that is achieved after successfully completing many educational and leadership tracks stipulated by the organisation. Angels Toastmasters Club will be hosting Confluence 2017 – a convergence of world-class speakers open to all on December 26, 2017 at the Crowne Plaza Bahrain. Five renowned speakers from around the world will be addressing the audience. Rosaline elaborates: “American speakers Sarah Khan, a noted public speaker featured in TEDx, and James Jeffley, a threetime runner up at the Toastmasters World
Championship, will be coming to Bahrain for the first time. The panel includes other speakers like Saudi Arabia’s Abdulla Abandi, Bahrain’s own Joel Indrupati and Rowena Niduza from the UAE, who was the first woman in the Middle East to enter the semifinals of the Toastmasters World Championship. Listening to them will motivate and inspire you to do and be your best, which is a must for all of us.” Rosaline urges the uninitiated to attend a Toastmasters meeting to understand how it helps in all-round personality development. “Every meeting is a learning process. Members hold different roles – timekeeper, grammarian, accountant or a table topic master. They get recognition and awards for every level that is successfully crossed.” The mission of Toastmasters International is to empower individuals to become effective communicators and leaders. Rosaline says: “Communication is very important in today’s times. With the skills you receive from Toastmasters, you become an inspiration for your children. Finding Your Fitness Groove It’s that time of year when we all make resolutions to improve our lives over the coming months. If you’re anything like us, one of those oft-stated intentions will be to improve your fitness. For many of us, going to the gym is just a chore and something we have to force ourselves to do. Virtually every fitness expert gives the advice that we should find a form of exercise we actually enjoy to have a chance of sticking at it. Turn the page for a whole range of new fitness options that you can access here on the island. Our regular contributor Anastasia waxes lyrical about the joys of fitness in Amwaj where she is often to be found pounding the pavements or enjoying the waters in her kayak. And clinical dietitian Sara Shahda gives New Year diet ambitions a boost with tips on how to spot and combat emotional eating. The fitness theme also carries on throughout the magazine. Fitter, Fabber You Discover the exercise that will keep you coming back for more and those resolutions to get fit might come true this year.
W
e all know the feeling — starting the new year somewhat flabby after the festive season’s excesses and determined that this really will be the year when we get off the couch and hit the fitness trail. Organisations, including the American College of Sports Medicine, seem to suggest that 2018’s hottest trends will be more of the same – group fitness, senior work-outs and yoga, which, with good reason, never seems to lose its popularity. But, if you fancy trying something different in 2018, there are plenty of fun options to choose from. Some have been here for a while, others are newly available in Bahrain. Bungee Fitness Channel your inner Peter Pan with this
great fun form of exercise. What is it? You might well ask. Florida-based fitness expert Raphael Konforti tells popsugar. com: "Normally bungees or resistance bands make exercises more difficult, but when the bungee is anchored to the ceiling, the resistance completely changes. The bungee is pulling you up, almost like an antigravity machine. So, any exercises done underneath the bungee, like lunges, are actually easier. The catch is the further away from the anchor point you go, the more resistance you'll have to overcome to get there. What's most appealing about bungee training is how much fun you have! Bungee training combines elements of dance and rhythm with your standard money-maker exercises like squats, lunges, planks, push-ups and sprints." We’re reliably informed that classes will be running from March, more info when we have it. Boxing Apparently boxing is due to make a comeback in 2018. According to livestrong. com: “Women who train at a boxing gym receive a multitude of benefits. This type of workout can burn hundreds of calories

Boxing improves your balance and flexibility while also boosting your confidence and serving as a valuable self-defence tool." clubs and leering men; pole dancing is officially one trend in women’s fitness that is both empowering and fun. It’s great for building core and upper-body strength as well as confidence. Local realtor Lana Furman, who’s been taking classes, says: “I only started last month but I already feel stronger and more flexible. It’s a mixture of gymnastics, dance and acrobatics, a fun way to stay fit.” And if you don’t think you can manage the pole to start with, classes also include using a hoop, which looks just slightly easier. If you fancy giving it a go, Ahmed’s Predator Studio has several classes a week. They also do an intriguing class called High Heels which looks like burlesque! Call 33 192-666.
Rowing Since the island now has its very own rowing club, Bahrain Rowing and Canoe Centre, this is one sport that’s now within everyone’s reach. And the centre is truly inclusive catering to everyone from elite athletes to those with disabilities and people from low-inclome households. Scull rowing is great for the legs, core and upper-body strength. Canoeing builds core strength and balance and, as an added bonus, they’re also promising dragon boating – think Hawaii Five-0. Advance booking is mandatory, as boats have to be individually set up, and there are four time slots available daily — 6.30am-8am, 8am-9.30am, 4pm-5.30pm and 5.30pm-7pm. Contact bahrainrowing.org.
And Now For Something Completely Different… Here are a couple of fitness ideas we’re not quite so sure about.
Water Walking Nope, this has no religious connotations. Rather, it’s about crossing the water’s surface inside a giant, plastic hamster ball! They’re called WaterWalkerz and look much like the zorbing balls, which were a big craze in Europe a few years ago. The tricky part is staying upright. To avoid falling, you’ll need to engage your abs and keep yourself moving – so, what looks like a lot of fun is really a full-body workout, too.

SUP Yoga OK, so by now we all know what stand-up paddle boarding is, and yoga is one of the world’s most popular forms of exercise. But yoga on a paddle board? Yep, it’s doable, it’s fun and it’s also incredibly good for you. According to doyouyoga. com the benefits are many and varied, from being forced to slow down your yoga practice to challenging your muscles in a different way and developing greater mindfulness as paying attention to every breath and body movement, every placement of a foot, leg or arm, is key to www.womanthismonth.com
Who can forget the train station dance scene to the strains of Jai Ho in Slumdog Millionaire? If you can hear that song without shaking your booty, you clearly have no soul! But if you want to learn how to do it properly, build you aerobic fitness and truly up the ante in terms of coordination, then Bollywood dance classes are the place to be. Check out the action at Bollywood Steps, in Ramli Mall, which has classes on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Call 39 323-453.
Cycle Karaoke Yes, you did read that correctly. Apparently the Americans have taken this one to heart and can regularly be found belting out their favourite tunes whilst peddling like stink in a spin class. Step Away From the Fridge! Clinical dietitian, Sara Shahda on dealing with emotional eating and hunger, an issue that plagues many of us.
E
motional eating (or stress eating) is using food to make yourself feel better or eating to satisfy emotional needs rather than physical hunger. Occasionally using food as a pick-me-up, a reward or perhaps to celebrate, is not a bad thing. But when eating is your primary emotional reaction, you may find you're eating without thinking, tucking into chocolate, ordering a pizza or opening the refrigerator door when you are bored or lonely or after an exhausting day. Keep up with this same attitude and you are in danger of falling into a cycle of unhealthy eating where the real problem is never solved. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish between physical and emotional hunger. Check out these signs: • Emotional hunger isn’t located in your stomach, it is in response to your feelings, while physical hunger will manifest in physical Sara Shahda signs such as headache, stomach grumbling, feeling weak or tired. • Emotional hunger ends with regrets while physical hungers ends with feeling good that you are taking care of your body’s health. • Emotional hunger tends to induce a craving for specific high-calorie or highcarbohydrate foods, such as chocolate or pizza; while if you’re hunger is physical, then any food sounds good. • Emotional hunger is not satisfied once you are full — you keep on eating until you are stuffed. On the other hand, physical hunger doesn’t mean you need to be stuffed, you are satisfied once full. Are you an emotional eater? Do you eat when you are feeling stressed? Do you eat when you are not hungry? Do you eat to feel better? Do you reward yourself with food? Do you eat until you have stuffed yourself?
38
January 2018
Simple strategies to help deal with fake hunger or emotional eating. • Take five minutes before you give in to a craving. • Before eating, learn to ask yourself “Why am I am eating?" Use the HALT acronym (Hungry or Angry or Lonely or Tired?) — this question will let you understand your trigger and whether your hunger is physical or emotional. • Learn to accept your feeling and how to deal with it For example: If you are depressed or lonely or exhausted or anxious, get active; do something instead of just eating, take a bath,
watch a comedy show, read a good book, meet a friend, go shopping, etc. • Drink a big glass of water, it will fill your stomach, plus sometimes you feel hungry because your body is dehydrated and needs water. • Choose healthy food high in fibre and protein instead of sugary options. In order to stop the cycle of emotional eating, you have to make a commitment to reach deep inside yourself to find a place of grit and strength. Hopefully the above reminders, done daily for at least 21 days until they become habitual, can assist you in your life journey. www.womanthismonth.com

Amwaj Fit Triathlete and realtor Anastasia Ageeva explains why Amwaj could be the best place to start your New Year fitness regime.
H
ello, my fit and healthy readers, have you enjoyed your festive season? Plenty of fun with family and friends, an abundance of fine cuisine and beverages I am sure! So, it’s back to work! And of course you want your six pack and beach body back ASAP! Well, luckily the sports season in Bahrain is in full swing and we welcome you to our sports and wellness scene in Amwaj Islands. Take advantage of the cooler winter weather and enjoy the wide variety of sports and fun events being staged around the islands. RUNNING AND WALKING We run all year in loops of 5km around Amwaj or there is also an 11km loop. We have safe pavements and considerate drivers. There’s a marathon relay team that participates in all the running events on the island. Actually, we've been co-hosting The Colour Run, in January, for a number of years, in association with the Bahrain Road Runners. Experience the glorious sunrises and sunsets over the Arabian Gulf and enjoy the landscaped areas filled with the sounds of birds singing! Check out Loop Amwaj running series on the corresponding Facebook page. www.womanthismonth.com
There are also many residents simply enjoying morning and evening walks around Amwaj. It's the perfect place to walk your dog too! CYCLING Like the running, you can ride loops of 5km or more. During the cooler months, many Amwaj Islanders cycle for groceries or over to visit friends. We’ve also hosted a few triathlon events. Lower speed limits and courteous drivers make for a safer cycling environment.
SWIMMING AND WATERSPORTS Our sparkling, turquoise salt-water lagoons are replenished with the gentle tide and safe for swimming. It's quite shallow along the beach, and therefore safe for your children. You can swim for miles! Our most enthusiastic swimmers and triathletes swim like dolphins (which are also regular guests here) navigating 8km around Amwaj. Snorkelling is also fun with an array of aquatic life to be seen and, if you wish to immerse yourself completely in the marine environment, there is a certified PADI diving centre at Amwaj Marina for diving enthusiasts and those seeking to become certified. The lagoons offer a safe haven for kayaking too, since there are no motor boats allowed. You can lose yourself in the tranquillity of the waters and enjoy the waterfront views of the luxury properties along the shorelines. Paddle boarding, which is a great sport for tanning and keeping all your muscles toned (also great for runners' specific muscle development), is very popular in Amwaj Islands, and for those yoga enthusiasts seeking to perfect their balance, it offers a unique experience. For the more adventurous, kitesurfing takes advantage of the offshore winds and wakeboarding is organised by residents of the Floating City and Marina Club members. Check out the Amwaj Marina Surfski Club and Kitesurfing Bahrain Facebook pages for their recent activities. YOGA There are a few locations for yoga on Amwaj, in Zawia 3 tower, in Meena 7 Maya Gym, Tala Leisure Centre, Equilibrium and the newly opened yoga studio in the Amwaj Marina. RAQUET SPORTS Tala Island residents have the benefit of a great tennis court that is well lit in the evening. Squash is also available in Tala Leisure Centre for Tala Island residents. GYMS Nearly every building on Amwaj has a wellequipped gym, but you can always get social and join Maya Gym in Meena 7, Tala Island gym for residents, the 24-hour gym in the Lagoon or have fun with the cross-fit gym at Amwaj Business Park. Amwaj Islands are so much more than a residential area, so why not make it your New Year's resolution to make the most of being on Amwaj? Stealing Her Style Is there anyone in the world NOT talking about Meghan Markle at the moment? Her recent engagement to Prince Harry and subsequent imminent arrival to the British Royal Family means the whole world has its eyes on the former Suits star! Celeb stylist Asgar Saboo tells us how to get her envy-inducing locks.
N
ot everybody who wants curly hair is blessed with curly hair. So, instead, we have to compromise and form the curled locks ourselves. With the perfect blow dry and quality curling mousse, we can make our hair appear naturally curly.
SHAMPOO, CONDITION AND COMB Shampooing and conditioning correctly is key. Using a moisturising shampoo and conditioner will help fight frizz, define the curls and keep them looking fresh and shiny for a prolonged period of time. Top Tip: A little goes a long way, so only apply a dime-sized amount of product to avoid drying out the hair. Allow the conditioner to sit for a few minutes in order to help detangle any knots. Just after you rinse out your conditioner, try gently brushing through your hair with a wide-toothed comb to get all the tangles out. Brushing the hair when dry, especially for those with naturally curly hair, can cause more frizz. TOWEL DRYING It’s important not to be too rough when drying your hair straight after washing it. As you can imagine, the amount of force you apply to drying is reflective of how much damage may be done. Top Tip: Before you get out of the shower, wring all of the excess water from your hair and begin drying. You don’t want to dry your hair too much so it’s important to find that medium. Rubbing your hair excessively is going to cause damage, so instead put your hair up in a towel and simply leave it be for 10-15 minutes – this is when you can
focus on getting other bits and pieces ready. Try to use a towel with gentler fabrics, or failing this a white cotton T-shirt. For tangles, first apply a detangling or conditioning spray. TIME FOR SOME PRODUCT With the hair still slightly damp and combed out in thicker strands, it’s now time to add some curling mousse. Top Tip: Add a generous amount of mousse, roughly the size of a golf ball, from the root to tip and scrunch with your fingers. Make sure to use a product with some hold to it to ensure your curls last longer. If you are going to use a gel, the trick is to rub it in your hands and then lightly scrunch it up into your hair. You don’t want to run your hands through your hair and create a mess, but if you do, then re-comb so strands are evenly separated. Repeat this until you coat all of your hair with mousse, tip your head upside down and blow-dry until nearly dry. AIR OUT BEFORE ADDING MORE PRODUCT Now it’s time to let your hair sit for a while after adding your product. Give your locks around five minutes to settle; however, you
40

can scrunch every so often depending on how much volume you desire. Top Tip: Once the hair is scrunched and separated, avoid touching it and let it completely dry naturally, or, if you are feeling impatient, use a diffuser but please note this is not as effective. Once your hair is totally dry, it may need a spray or pomade to finish off the look. THE PERFECT COMBO! It’s believed that this advanced, scientific exercise combined with LPG Endermologie treatment is one of the best recipes for losing weight. Apple Sharma put the theory to the test.
I
t’s almost impossible to indulge in the festive season, and not battle the bulge afterwards. But fear not, I might’ve just found the perfect solution, with a little help from Dessange Paris Bahrain. I was asked to put the Power Plate workout to the test, followed by an LPG session and I happily obliged! Since I’ve given up smoking, I’ve been struggling a little with my weight (and it’s not because I’m eating more, but because my body is desperately trying to get back to normal and my hormones are all out of whack). So, I was keen to try out my first Power Plate vibration training, which my fitness instructor, Lovely, walked me through after a routine consultation. She explained that we would do the entire workout on the Power Plate, which is basically a vibrating platform. An effective workout, it has various benefits, from cardiovascular to immune health, maintaining bone density and improving hormone efficiency. It also helps increase the body’s metabolism in conjunction with detoxification, and is the best method for quick and sustainable weight loss. The shaking amplifies any motion performed on a vibration plate, meaning your body does more effective work in a shorter time period, with persistent muscle engagement. Like any other form of exercise, training on the machine encourages faster calorie consumption, consequently increasing your metabolic rate, so you’ll lose more fat, even when you’re not working out! We started with a gentle fiveminute warm-up and then dived straight into the main workout. It began with single leg lunges, followed by more lunges with bicep curl (5lbs plate), side lunges, back row with kickback, triceps www.womanthismonth.com
push-ups, triceps dips, standing back row and back fly with weights, crunches, alternate knee to elbow crunches, mountain climbers and finally the plank. Luckily, my muscle memory had come back by then and I was thoroughly enjoying the workout, which ended with a short massage and stretching. All of this had taken only 30 minutes and I was feeling amazing at the end of it. I was rewarded for all my hard work with a refreshing detox juice of celery, green apple, ginger and kale – it was delicious! I was raring to go to my next appointment, the LPG session. Having already tried this procedure once before and having seen the benefits, I was looking forward to it, especially since it’s meant to have a greater slimming effect when combined with exercise. For those of you who are new to
the procedure – it’s 100 per cent non-invasive, completely natural and pain-free. It’ a mechanical massage that stimulates the natural breaking down of fats to re-sculpt the figure, smooth cellulite, firm the skin and slim fat cells. Sounds good, right? Believe me, it is! The LPG machine looks like a mini vacuum cleaner hose with a head on it, only much fancier. With repeated sessions, LPG promises significant inch loss and offers
different types of Lipomassage treatments. I chose Shorty for waist, stomach, buttocks, thighs and saddle bags. My friendly therapist, Erin, punched in the programme, explaining how LPG is great for toning and reducing cellulite. With visual instructions on the screen, I could see exactly which parts would be affected. She started on my right side, moving the head in a rolling in and out action, combined with circular motions. I don’t have a great threshold for pain and, to my relief, it didn’t hurt much, except in certain sensitive parts, when I felt the skin pull a little, giving a slight tingling sensation. Two to three sessions per week with a gap of one or two days are recommended for the best possible results. Most people see benefits in six to eight sittings, with optimum results after 12, combined with exercise. Additionally, Dessange has introduced the ‘4 Week Challenge Promotion’, designed to encourage ladies to lose four per cent body fat within the four weeks of signing up. It comprises six LPG sessions, five Power Plate with PT trainings and 10 group fitness classes. Those participating also get a month's membership access, a 60-minute massage and a cut and blow-dry. Personally, I loved my Power Plate session – it’s a lot more enjoyable than your usual gym workout. Add LPG and a balanced, healthy diet to the equation, and it’s a winning combination that will surely put you back on the fit wagon! Call 17 713-999. January 2018

SMOKY EYES Always wanted to try the smouldering eye effect but didn’t know how? Try Apple Sharma’s top tips to achieving bat-worthy eyes.
S
moky eyes can be very sexy and give you a dramatic look but a lot of us are afraid to try it in case we get it completely wrong and end up with a ‘black eye’ instead of a smouldering one. It’s really not that difficult once you get the basics right. The key is in layering the shades and blending rather than just plopping on a dark colour. Follow these simple steps and get ready to bat those eyelids. PREP YOUR EYES The first step is to start with a blank canvas. Use a primer over your lids and on the under eye; this will keep your eye shadow from smudging. If you have dark circles, it will kill all the excitement of a sultry eye, so apply a thick creamy concealer on your under eye using a make-up sponge or your fingers. CHOOSE THE COLOUR Smoky eyes can be created in a number of ways. Whether you want to go with the traditional grey and black or bronze and browns, choose shades that complement your skin tone. Brown eyes look great in hues of navy and grey, blue eyes pop with gold and copper, and green eyes stand out in grey and plum. You’ll need three shades of a similar colour to build the layers: a light, creamy colour; a medium base shade; and a dark, smoky one — to get the ultimate look.
42
January 2018
APPLY THE SHADOW Start with the lightest shade on the inside corner of your eye and brow bone, and then apply the medium shade over the entire eyelid. Blend the darkest shade to the outer corners of your eyes and the crease. Using an angled brush, sweep some of the dark shadow onto the lower eyelid. Don’t stick to just black, experiment with navies, greys, plums and coppers to add an extra oomph of sexiness. Whatever shades you use, make sure that you blend thoroughly. Use a Q-tip (ear buds) or a smudge brush to lightly smudge the shadow at the crease and along the bottom lashes.
TOP TIPS • Make sure your eyebrows are shaped well and coloured. Too thin or light eyebrows will make your smoky eyes look unnatural. • Keep the rest of your make-up simple – use a nude or light lipstick. • Don’t forget to dust off any excess shadow from your face by using a large fluffy make-up brush. DEFINE THE EYES With your colour in place, it's time to accentuate your eyes with a creamy black eye pencil or eyeliner. Apply to your upper lid and bottom lash lines, and make sure no skin is showing. Add a cat eye flick which works great with liquid eyeliners. To open up the eyes and add a touch of radiance, apply a shimmering highlighter at the inner ‘V’ corners of your eyes. CURL AND MASCARA For a more flirty look, use an eyelash curler. Gently clamp down at the base of your lashes, hold for five seconds and release. Repeat on the other eye. Finally brush on mascara to complete the look. Use only one to two coats, to avoid it looking too clumpy. www.womanthismonth.com

DEALING WITH DRY SKIN As the weather is changing, so is the condition of our skin. Learn how to look after it with some vital tips from this popular salon.
F
or all of winter’s romanticised greats (hot chocolate, winter walks, etc), there are a few dreaded side-effects too, including dry and itchy skin. Fortunately, a daily skincare regime can help achieve a hydrated, glowing complexion. Beauty experts at Joz Salon & Spa bring you the definitive guide to preventing, soothing and dealing with dry skin. PREP YOUR HOME The drier the air, the drier the skin. To maximise the amount of water in the air, place a humidifier in the room where you spend the most time. This will increase the moisture level in the air, helping skin stay hydrated. In addition, keep the heat at a low or moderate temperature to avoid extra dryness. CHANGE YOUR DIET With the widely known fact of a direct connection between the gut and skin health, increasing your daily intake of fats may help with dry skin. Joz experts recommend eating a diet rich in walnuts, olive oil and avocados (but not to sub them for a proper skin-care routine). “Don’t overdo it with alcohol, caffeine and coffee, as they are diuretics that will cause dehydration, and drink tons of water,” they say. BUFF YOUR SKIN No matter how many serums and creams are applied, dry skin will stay the same without some light exfoliation. Get a gentle scrub, something with a mild glycolic or lactic acid to get rid of dead skin. Experts suggest swapping a gentle formula for your regular cleanser, two to three times a week. For those with severely raw or dry skin, skip the exfoliator and incorporate a wet washcloth instead for a gentler option. And tailor your Retin-A usage to every other day because, while it’s surely the wrinkle-fighting hero product, it’s also a strong exfoliant and may cause extra dryness. Once the skin is buffed, serums and moisturisers can penetrate and really get to work. SLATHER ON A SERUM While most summertime products are swapped come winter, serums are the exception to that rule. “As long as it’s alcohol-free, an antioxidant serum is perfect for year-round usage,” say Joz experts. “No matter the climate, skin is attacked by free www.womanthismonth.com
radicals, causing sun spots, the breakdown of collagen and premature fine lines. To prevent the damage, apply a vitamin C formula as a first layer in the morning, before layering on heavier products. And don’t forget the sunscreen — a daily dose of SPF 30 will keep skin covered, even on cold days." SWITCH TO A HEAVY FACE CREAM Perhaps one of the most important and commonly overlooked steps is changing to a seriously hydrating moisturiser. Look for creams, rather than lotions, that are made with ceramides and hyaluronic acid. Ceramides aid in the protection of the skin’s barrier, which is easily broken down during winter. For those
with severely chapped faces, pack on a hefty amount of product, morning and night. AVOID HARSH CLEANSERS Toss out any face washes with extremely drying ingredients, like fragrances or additives, in favour of those formulated with chamomile or oatmeal. A really gentle cleanser is a great option that won’t strip skin of its natural oils which are needed to protect overall moisture. HAVE A NIGHT-TIME ROUTINE Every night before bed, stick to a routine that will ensure healthy skin come morning. Post face serum and moisturiser, apply a gentle eye cream to the undereye and lids. The product will seal in the cream and prevent against redness and eczema, both of which are common during this time of the year. While a hot shower feels phenomenal on a chilly day, experts advise to limit rinse time to five minutes or less and to use warm, not hot water, which only adds to the dryness. And instead of soap bars or body washes, use a creamy cleanser. Within 60 seconds of showering, apply a thick body moisturiser – look for something with mineral oil, lanolin or ceramides — to help skin hold on to moisture throughout the night. Here’s to healthy, hydrated and happy skin this season. Call 17 369-133, 16 031-120 or 17 756-449. January 2018

Pulmonology specialist Dr Sonal Jagtap explains lung changes in diabetes.
D
iabetes is the most common of all diseases worldwide. According to World Health Organisation figures for 2016, 8.5 per cent of Bahrain’s population is affected and, of those, the mortality rate is 13 per cent. Diabetic patients are very susceptible to infections and upper and lower respiratory issues are not uncommon. Infections of the sinuses, nose, throat, airways and the lung tissue with common and uncommon bacteria, viruses and fungi are known to occur and recur. A diabetic patient is likely to catch an infection easily and also may require stronger medications for longer. Complications such as pneumonia and abscesses in the lungs, sinuses and neck are expected. Other less known complications of diabetes may include: • Accumulation of fibrous tissue in the lungs causes increased stiffness of both lung and chest wall. • Loss of elastic recoil capacity in the lung leads to a dynamic collapse of small airways

during exhalation. • Decreased strength in breathing muscles results in potential impaired efficiency of the ventilatory pump contributing to functional lung defects.
• A direct effect on the small blood vessels of the lungs causes hypoxia – a reduction in the amount of oxygen reaching the blood. • Increased risk of lung damage for smokers. • Accelerated decline in lung function in old age. Lung function tests can detect changes in the functional capacity of the lungs. Early reversible changes can be treated. However, prevention is always better than cure. Strict sugar control is the key to success. The following steps can help to achieve healthier complication-free lungs: • Regular checks for blood glucose levels. • Regular follow-up with expert physicians. • Seeking and following good dietary advice. • Not missing medications. • Maintaining good hygiene. • Taking immediate action at the slightest sign of infection.

REVOLUTIONARY SOLUTIONS TO AN AGE-OLD PROBLEM Age, multiple childbirths and various medical conditions can all lead to a slackening of the vaginal muscles. Dr Farah Alnuaimy, consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology, outlines two of the latest treatments. PLASMA REGENERATION A new technique for regenerating cells in the intimate area is through vaginal injection with your own blood. The regenerative treatment is based on the plasma, which is injected into the tissues, helping to Dr Farah Alnuaimy tighten and strengthen the muscles. WHAT IS PLASMA? Plasma blood samples are very rich in platelets containing growth factors that stimulate cell regeneration. Scientific studies show that plasma injections in the vagina accelerate the wound-healing process which helps solve urinary tract problems in women. It should be noted that plasma is currently used in cosmetic procedures as well, because it works to renew skin cells and rid them of wrinkles permanently. WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE? The goal of this treatment is to activate the vaginal cells and strengthen the surrounding tissue, thus improving the desire to exercise intimacy. This technique also helps relieve pain in women who suffer during intercourse. The treatment improves the quality of skin surrounding the vagina and makes it appear younger and smoother. RESULTS OBSERVED INCLUDE • More youthful and vital in the genital area as the skin becomes softer and less stressed due growth stimulation. • The vaginal opening becomes narrower due to cell growth. • Control of urine. • Reduction in pain during intimacy. REQUIRED TREATMENT SESSIONS? For best results, the patient usually needs two to four sessions but some require just one treatment. The gap between sessions is usually 10 to 12 weeks in consultation with your doctor, with

timing determined by your body's response. LASER TIGHTENING As women age, the skin of the vagina loses its elasticity and vitality as collagen fibres become fatigued. Loss of elasticity and strength in vaginal tissue occurs for a number of reasons, including: ageing, smoking, obesity, childbirth, hysterectomy and surgery. Just as cosmetic procedures have been used for decades to improve facial skin and to restore its youthfulness, non-surgical vaginal tightening improves the health and vitality of vaginal tissue. HOW IS THE PROCEDURE PERFORMED? The treatment utilises a controlled laser beam, applying concentrated thermal heating to the inner layers of vaginal tissue. The heat induces contraction of collagen and elastin and allows for long-term change by stimulating regeneration of these important proteins. The accuracy of the procedure allows total control over the movement and intensity of the laser to ensure maximum comfort for every patient. A 15-minute procedure that can be performed during your lunch break, most patients report no pain and require no downtime afterwards. Treatments are scheduled at two- or four-week
intervals, and most patients benefit from one or two treatments. WHY CHOOSE NON-SURGICAL VAGINAL TIGHTENING? Patients who choose vaginal tightening enjoy several important benefits: • A minimally invasive and painless 15-minute treatment. • No suggested recovery period. • Enhanced muscle tone, strength and elasticity of vaginal tissues. • Stronger sensation during intercourse. • Better control over urinary incontinence. WHAT TO EXPECT AFTERWARDS? One of the main benefits of vaginal tightening is the fact that there is no required downtime or recovery period after the procedure. Patients can return to work and daily life immediately. Sexual activity can be resumed in 72 hours. Patients can return to normal exercise within 24 hours. Patients avoid the inconvenience of traditional surgical procedures but are still able to enjoy all the benefits that come from restoring vaginal tissue. Bouncing Back Given that Bahrain is a playground for a variety of sports, Behnaz Sanjana turns your attention to two unconventional methods of rehabilitation from fitness-related injuries.
W
hile it is in the best interests of our overall health and recreation that we engage in exercise and sports — whether it be running marathons, rough-housing at rugby, showing off brawn at weightlifting or simply hitting the gym regularly — it is imperative that we pay attention to the signs of the body’s wear and tear caused by physical activities. Injuries sustained while playing sports or working out can be painful and, sometimes, life-altering. Effective and timely treatment can make the difference between bouncing back to fitness and enduring physical restrictions for years to come. A Crack in the Right Place - Chiropractic Chiropractic is a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and their effects on the function of the nervous system and general health. It’s a noninvasive, drug-free treatment method used frequently to release tension in muscles
50
January 2018
and restore joint function and mobility. Dr Amy Bowzaylo, clinical director and CEO of InTouch Integrated Chiropractic Spine Centre, observes that more than 50 per cent of her clinic’s cases are sports injury related. In her long career, she has treated athletes competing on international platforms in rugby, triathlons, gymnastics, hockey and professional bull riding. She says: “Here in Bahrain, I have treated the national team’s footballers, fencing athletes, body builders, boxers and Olympic weightlifters, as well as those who play handball and cricket.” She believes that the main cause of injury (besides direct trauma) is increasing the intensity of training too fast. “People want to run faster, jump higher, tackle harder, lift heavier — all too fast. Performance improvements are a result of forced adaptation. In other words, your muscles will only adapt if you force them to work through sufficient load — 60 to 70 per cent of sports injuries where running is a major component are due to
inappropriate training load. It is important to remember that pain is a warning sign from the brain and to distinguish which characteristics of pain are OK to work through, and which ones must get assessed and treated accordingly,” she says. www.womanthismonth.com
LIFESTYLE | wellbeing
The second most common injuries are ones related to poor posture: impingement syndromes, lumbar and cervical strains amongst others. Dr Amy says: “Chiropractors can help undo the toll the body takes while competing in sports. Many high-level athletes swear by chiropractic treatment; Barry Bonds and Arnold Schwarzenegger are two examples. NFL quarterback Tom Brady of the New England Patriots is known to have said that one session of chiropractic makes him feel about three inches taller and one step ahead of the game.” Chiropractic plays a large role in injury prevention and performance improvement. Both high-impact and low-impact athletes can benefit from maintenance spinal adjustments. For high-impact athletes (playing rugby, Gaelic football, netball, football), it increases performance and flexibility, which in turn lowers the risk of injury. For low-impact athletes (golf, tennis, triathlon), maintenance adjustments can help relieve the strain that is placed on the body. “Imagine trying to ride your bike when the brake is rubbing on one side. You would stop to adjust the brake, improving the function of the bike to make the ride easier. Your body is no different. Maintaining alignment and function of your musculoskeletal system allows your body to perform at its best, not only in sport but in your daily activities as well,” says Dr Amy. Just Chill - Cryotherapy Yara Salman, of Hospitalia by Yara, is well www.womanthismonth.com
versed in the science of Cryotherapy, and its benefits for sportsmen and women. “Cryotherapy uses low temperatures, negative 110º C and below, for treating tissue damage, reducing pain, decreasing inflammation, increasing cell rejuvenation, improving skin tone, reducing signs of ageing, weight loss and curing jet lag,” she says. These days, this alternative therapy is a proven, much-sought-after modality in sports medicine and rehabilitation. It rapidly alleviates soreness and inflammation from intense training and
workouts that cause muscles to be totally worn out. Approximately three minutes in the Cryotherapy chamber, which is cooled with liquid nitrogen, has a lasting, beneficial effect. Yara explains: “As an automatic reaction to the intense cold, blood reaches your core, and in turn will release antiinflammatory molecules and endorphins which send signals to the different systems of your body. After the three-minute session, the patient is made to step out of the chamber to warm up, where blood re-circulation is supposed to rid the body of toxins. The procedure can help reduce pain and inflammation.” With international superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo attributing an increase in strength and fitness to freezing in his personal ‘icebox’ for a few minutes every week, others have got onto the chilled bandwagon as well, including some Welsh rugby players, according to the Daily Mail. The idea here is to jumpstart the process of muscle regeneration and immunesystem stimulation. It’s not only the injured who resort to this treatment. “Cryotherapy also helps fit athletes or sportspeople, by helping them rapidly recover from inflammation and sore muscles. It is a proven method to recover from strenuous workouts,” says Yara. She advocates the treatment be taken for strengthening the immune system, improving blood circulation, reducing stress, anxiety and depression and better sleep as well. January 2018

Behnaz Sanjana is wowed by the authentic flavours of this acclaimed Australian restaurant chain that has recently made its Middle East debut in Bahrain.
T
he chic, dark interiors of 400 Gradi, at The Avenues Bahrain, open up to a picturesque view of Bahrain Bay. The ambience echoes the principle of its founder chef Johnny Di Francesco’s take on food – understated but impactful. The open kitchen houses two large wood-fired ovens, made to his specifications. He is a scientist in the kitchen, I’m told. My stomach rumbled in anticipation. It wasn’t long before Insalata Caprese made an entry. The key elements are roundels of buffalo mozzarella and tomatoes. But when you bite in to the moistest mozzarella flown in from Italy along with the intense flavour of deep-hued Black Russian tomatoes, topped with a touch of Neapolitan olive oil and seasoning, regard for the seemingly simple plate goes up many notches. Next came Polpette Al Sugo – succulent meatballs that sit in Napoli sauce, with a side of airy, toasty bread. The oozing, golden cheese from the risotto-shelled Arancini makes the palate salivate with pure joy. But what made me exclaim "Mama Mia!" was the

Gamberi Fritte. I am yet to have such tender, juicy prawns coated in an almost translucent golden crust that goes ‘crunch’ when the fork pierces it. Dressed salad leaves and toasted almond flakes lend the dish a fresh earthiness, complemented by the artichoke and parsley puree it is plated on. The hint of cayenne pepper adds a teensy amount of fire to the mouth. If there’s one thing that you must sample at 400 Gradi, it is the Margherita Verace. This deceptively simple creation from chef Johnny’s repertoire shone brightest at the Pizza World Championship in 2014. Take a bite – the proof is in the pizza. The dough, made to his scientific method, is yielding and easy on the roof of the mouth – thin at the base, puffing up brilliantly at the cornicione. Sauce made with the best San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte cheese and fresh basil is all else it takes for this gastronomic wonder to make you want more. Moving on, Agnello Al Forno, which is braised shoulder of lamb, needed just a
delicate prod to obligingly separate into succulent morsels. The slight bitterness of sautéed silver beet, sweetness of the onion and tart tomatoes made it a perfect round-up of flavours. Spagettini was silken pasta drenched in a lobster bisque base with pieces of crab, lobster, cherry tomatoes and courgette discs – a seafood lover’s dream. The aroma of the Risotto Al Funghi Misti reached us a few seconds before the dish arrived. Not your stodgy rice preparation, this one. Five types of mushroom in a creamy sauce topped with Parmesan lent their unique taste and texture to the rice cooked to just the right level of al dente. The handcrafted pillows in Gnocchi Al Pomodoro coated in a full-bodied Napoli sauce were topped with fresh ricotta and verdant basil. This conjured up images of cosy cafés alongside cobbled streets and lush vineyards – my mind had already made an imaginary trip around the Mediterranean by this time. Cleansing the palate with jaw-droppingly flavourful sorbets – mango, raspberry and lemon – is highly recommended. Semifreddo Al Caramelo Arachidi Salati was a fine trapeze act between the sweet semifreddo, dark chocolate ganache, crumbly honeycomb and raspberries. The Tortino Al Cioccolato is an artfully made fondant, with a beckoning, runny centre. There is an assortment of gelato to choose from – I will be partial to the salted caramel and pistachio on my next visit. With a food philosophy that revolves around using the finest ingredients to serve up uncomplicated dishes long remembered for their remarkable taste, Bahrain is lucky to have 400 Gradi on home turf. www.womanthismonth.com

SHOW YOUR CULINARY METTLE The island’s much anticipated competition is back to test your courage in the kitchen.
C
ucina Italiana, one of the most popular Italian restaurants in Bahrain, invites amateur chefs to partake in the fifth season of its Master Chef competition. Thirty-six contestants will face off in the heats over the month of January 2018, spread over six rounds. Each round will see six contestants compete to prove their gastronomic prowess, and two entrants from each round will progress to the semi-finals held in February. Of the 12 shortlisted contestants, four will ace the semi-finals to qualify for the Grand Final on February 11, in which one contestant will win the honour of Master Chef’s coveted black apron. The initial elimination round will give participants 45 minutes to create an Italian dish (anything
except pizza) using ingredients of their choice. All raw elements will be provided by the restaurant, and have to be chosen within a fiveminute window before the cook-
off starts. Contestants are allowed to bring with them their preferred kitchen equipment and up to three speciality ingredients (not including proteins), should they
not be on the list of food provided. All of them would have had three days to prepare themselves after receiving the briefing on the competition, to ensure they are on an even footing when it comes to preparation. Participants will be judged on various criteria, including taste and texture, presentation of the dish, authenticity of the food and its method of preparation, and balance of flavours and portioning. The judges will ask questions on the contestants’ creations, which may also influence the scoring. The island awaits with bated breath to see who will reign supreme in the culinary battle of Bahrain this year.

GREEN SPRING CLEAN
H
EADS up, neat freaks! We know you feel glee when you see the supermarket shelves lined with colourful bottles – different kinds meant for every surface, nook and crevice of your home. But not only are their shiny contents loaded with noxious fumes and substances that harm humans, especially kids and pets, but are also significantly detrimental to the planet. Believe it or not, you have all the cleaning aids you essentially require sitting right in your kitchen cupboards. All you need to know is their potential dirt-busting powers, and you’re all set to save some dinars and the Earth.
SALT – the all-star Clean sink drains. Pour salt mixed with hot water down the kitchen sink regularly to deodorise and keep grease from building up. Remove water rings. Gently rub a thin paste of salt and vegetable oil on the white marks caused by beverage glasses and hot dishes on wooden tables. Clean greasy pans. Cast-iron skillets can be cleaned with a good sprinkling of salt and paper towels. Clean stained cups. Mix salt with a dab of dish soap to make a soft scrub for stubborn coffee and tea stains.

Clean refrigerators. A mix of salt and soda water can be used to wipe out and deodorise the inside of your refrigerator — a nice way to keep chemicalladen cleaners away from your food. Brighten colours. Wash coloured curtains or washable rugs in a saltwater solution to brighten the colours. Information Source: www.foodmatters.com
COFFEE – Not just a wake-up call Kill foul odours. If your refrigerator or shoe cabinet is a stenchridden nightmare, place a bowl of fresh, unused coffee grounds inside and leave it for a day or two. Strong instant coffee is a tried and tested panacea too.
Clean floors. Add a half-cup of salt to a mop bucket filled with warm water. Mop as usual. If you have wood floors, it will be brighter. If it’s tile, you will prevent it from getting dirty quickly.
Touch up furniture scratches. Conceal scratches on wood furniture by rubbing in a little bit of instant coffee dampened into a paste with hot water. Repeat if necessary until the scratch matches the surrounding wood.

LEMONS – When life hands you…
CREAM OF TARTAR – Outside of baked treats
Ditch the bleach. Throw discoloured white socks, towels or shirts in a stockpot with water and a few used lemons; simmer for a little while to lighten.
Remove rust stains. Mix one teaspoon cream of tartar with ¼ cup baking soda. Add hydrogen peroxide a little at a time until a paste is formed. Rub the paste on the rust spot. Let sit for 30 minutes and then clean with a damp sponge.
Germ-free chopping. Instead of discarding lemon halves after squeezing out the juice, save them to use as scrubbers for cleaning wooden cutting boards without damaging them. Brighten fixtures. Fresh lemon juice mixed with baking soda adds sparkle to white tiles, the sink and bathtub. Wood polish. Shine up wooden flooring by mixing a little fresh lemon juice with olive oil. Information Source: www.foodnetwork.com
VINEGAR – the natural grease cutter
Shine your sink. Mix a cup of distilled white vinegar with ¼ cup cream of tartar. Be sure to mix this in a glass or plastic container, not a metal one. Scrub a stainless steel sink and rinse with warm water. Revive scratched dishes. With time, light-coloured or white dinnerware can be left with dull grey scratches. Rub a paste of cream of tartar and water on the dishes and rinse with warm water for crockery to look just like new.
Clean glass. Combine one cup water, one tablespoon white vinegar, and one tablespoon rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Spray on glass and wipe clean with a newspaper. Then finish off with a dry cloth.
De-gunk the toaster. Smear a thick paste of cream of tartar and water on the sticky stuff, scrub with a sponge, and then wipe clean with a damp cloth or paper towel.
Nix carpet stains: Mix equal parts water and white vinegar in your carpet cleaner, or pour a small amount directly on carpet stain. Blot with a white cloth.
BAKING SODA – some uses you’ve not yet heard of
Sanitise the washing machine: Add ¾ cup white vinegar to your washing machine and run empty on the cleaning or sanitise cycle. TOP TIP: Don’t let the smell of vinegar put you off. Drop lemon or lime peels in a mason jar with basil, sage or mint. Heat up vinegar and pour over. Let sit overnight. Dilute and use as needed in a spray bottle. Information Source: www.thespruce.com
WARNING: Never mix bleach and vinegar, or you will create toxic chlorine and chloramine gas. Keep your home smelling lovely with an all-natural DIY gel air-freshener. 1. Heat ¾ cup of water over medium-high heat. 2. Add one tablespoon salt and stir until dissolved. 3. Add two sachets of gelatin and stir until dissolved. 4. Remove from heat and add ¼ cup of water. 5. Pour into containers and add 20 drops of your favourite essential oils, food colouring (optional) and flowers (optional). Cool and then cover with a vented lid. Clean the oven. Make a paste with water and baking soda to cover the interiors of a grimy oven. Leave for at least an half an hour and then gently scrub away the stains. Stop the ant parade. Sprinkle some baking soda on ants’ entrance and exit areas to help get rid of them and prevent them from getting into the house. Erase unwanted artwork. Make a solution of baking soda and warm water and wipe over crayon and magic pen marks on washable walls. For tougher stains, sprinkle dry baking soda on a damp cloth and scour gently. Easy on/off. Sprinkle some baking soda into your rubber gloves each time you take them off. Not only will it absorb dampness and keep them fresh, they will also glide on and off easily. On Those Resolutions...
Chanelmama blogger Ouiam Charkani El Hassani on year-long resolutions.
E
very year we fall victim to making a New Year’s Resolution List, and most of us make promises that "This year I’m really going to stick to it!" It really does feel refreshing to establish resolutions and, if anything, they get us excited about the impending year ahead. So much can happen in a year and the beauty of that resides in not knowing what to expect, why not this or that? Maybe what has started off as few words on a list ends up being very real? Who knows? Life is crazy like that. So what if some people think this whole New Year’s Resolutions shenanigans is just an excuse to be lazy and take a whole year to achieve goals that only really take a few weeks? Why does it matter whether you achieve your goals in a month or a year? And, most importantly, why do we get so serious about the whole resolutions topic? Since when do we have control over what happens tomorrow or next month or even this very next minute? No matter what the resolutions are, why can’t we focus more on enjoying the process and stress less about the results? Taking time to figure out your needs and desires for a new year that’s approaching is amazing; figuring out the things that will bring a fresh breath of air into your life and working towards making them a reality is
62
January 2018
incredible. Yet, you can only try, no one knows what the universe has in store for you. Planning and writing down lists of goals is great but what is even greater is to have the most fun trying to achieve those goals. If your resolutions stress you out, then maybe this isn't the year it was meant to be. Or maybe it is, and you need to jump to and tackle it. In both cases, what really matters is how you made each step of the way count, how you lived the year, month, day, trying to achieve your goals. Think about it, the year will come to an end whether you achieve your goals or not, so why not savour every stage, every setback and every breakthrough on the journey? And make some wonderful memories while you are working hard to make your dreams become reality. What if you started your New Year’s Resolution List with: “Be present, be whole, be full of light”? What if you set out believing in yourself, knowing that you are enough and that you are this rare, unique, work-inprogress kind of material, that
No matter what the resolutions are, why can’t we focus more on enjoying the process and stress less about the results? is already very valuable and precious yet open to whatever time will bring? What if this year, as you work on achieving your goals, you secretly add a new one that would be “Enjoy achieving these goals”. And, whether by the end of 2018 you have crossed and checked all the boxes or not, at least you know that you have enriched your year, making each second count. How about creating a fun list of small resolutions that can grow in the midst of 2018? Goals that can ebb and flow with the year ahead. Set yourself up for success and have fun, no matter what. Try and see the good in everything. Make
a conscious effort to be happy no matter the downpour you are faced with now or in the future. Try breaking down those goals into mini-goals, and take pleasure in achieving the small ones before the bigger ones. Never forget that in the first place you only made a list of resolutions to embellish, refine and polish the real deal: YOU, and that you really are all that matters! I hope your resolutions overall are goals that make you wiser, more experienced and add to your stack of cherished memories. I hope they gather your loved ones, seal friendships and make new ones. I hope they make you live life with every inch of your being, make you feel all the feels and offer you an unforgettable taste of life. Just know that from the beginning, you are enough. You are good already. Your resolutions should be helpful stepping stones in turning you into a stronger self, not a make or break situation that makes you feel guilty if not reached. So, be present, be whole, be full of light! g www.womanthismonth.com
Star
Gazing Raphael tells us what’s written in the stars this month
Capricorn
If you’ve been feeling down recently then you’ll be pleased to know things will be looking up over the coming weeks. Your main concerns are likely to be about career and the home, with both in a bit of a mix up at the moment. You need to make a couple of strong resolutions for the New Year and stick to them.
Pisces
The nature of your sign means it doesn’t take much to get you flustered. If an orderly plan comes off the rails, you are usually only a few steps from panic. So, when a big family event you have been organising hits a lastminute hitch, alarm bells ring. Perhaps you should think about delegation. You believe it’s important to prove you can do it alone but you will achieve a lot more as part of a team.
Aries
New year, new you as you look to implement the changes you’ve been contemplating. Much of this has been driven with doubts and fears over a relationship, which are more to do with the unhappiness of a partner rather than issues on your part. Although you have tried everything in your power, you seem unable to offer them a true sense of security and they are close to breaking point. The answer is to listen a little more to what they are telling you and then act on that.
Taurus
You’ve been putting in a lot of hard work over and while you may be reaping the rewards www.womanthismonth.com
with past actions, which still snap at your conscience from time to time. You will also be given the opportunity to make amends. If you leave it too much longer then it may be too late. On the home front concerns over finances could force you to take out a loan. Make sure you don’t overestimate on the repayments or things could be quite tough for the first part of 2018.
Virgo
You’ve been inundated with work recently and while it’s kept you busy and kept the money coming in, you may have neglected a loved one. Your career is very important to you but remember that without those people who have helped make your ambitions a reality, you might not have gone so far so quickly so make sure you show them some gratitude. A relative may come looking for advice on a delicate family matter, you may be surprised by what they tell you.
Libra
Aquarius
A loved one has been reliant on your support for the last few months and now, as they are better equipped to stand on their own two feet again, they want to make it up to you. You can look forward to a surprise. You may have an opportunity to change direction at work and you should consider this. You may be troubled with a back complaint and should see a doctor.
horoscopes
to a degree, there is still more to achieve. Others may be taking the credit, so you need to assert yourself and claim the recognition and financial gains. You have probably never been closer to the person dearest to your heart, so if you sense there is something wrong, don’t be afraid to ask what it might be.
Gemini
After a strenuous year, you can look forward to a little relief in 2018 and the prospect of a long holiday will be inviting. Put some time aside to get away from it all. You have been stretching yourself and although you might not realise it, your batteries are nearly empty. For a few of you, this break might even see a new romance begin and a young man or woman with bright blue eyes and a charming smile will dramatically change your life.
Cancer
If you have been thinking about making a longterm commitment with a partner, just make sure it is really what you want. If you are not ready to share the responsibilities of life with someone else then think twice. Sometimes you have to look beyond the immediate future. Is this person the one you really see yourself growing old with? If you can’t respond with a positive “yes” then you have your answer.
Leo
The next few weeks are set to be a period of reflection for you as you come to terms
Your sign can be a very political animal when necessary and there is plenty to suggest that you will need these skills as you become embroiled in a power struggle at work. Choose your side well and ensure those around you can be trusted as there is an underbelly of dishonesty you will need to overcome. Beware a blonde woman with very dark eyes. Make sure you are aware of her every move because she is the main threat to your stability.
Scorpio
Christmas may have been a little bit of a tight affair and the New Year may also initially bring challenges, but look beneath the surface and you'll find things are not as bad as they seem. Things will pick up and there is the chance for a complete turnaround in your fortunes – so long as you are sensible. There’s a late festive party around mid-January and you will continue celebrating. Just be sure to remember when it’s time to stop!
Sagittarius
You might find that a new relationship which has been moving along quite well until now suddenly takes a turn towards the unexpected after you and a partner end up spending a week together and you discover something that throws you completely off course. Whilst very few people reveal everything about themselves at the start, this particular problem may not be something you can accept as having been kept hidden and there are likely to be a few fireworks. Before you go any further you need to ask yourself just what you feel for the person in question and whether you’re prepared to make the sacrifices required. January 2018
