editor's letter Ten years ago, Woman this Month hit the shelves as the first English monthly for women in the Kingdom of Bahrain. A decade later, we continue to enjoy the leading position in the sector, reaching to every woman in the country and overseas. In the July 2013 edition of this triumphant venture, we celebrate womankind — her life and achievements — and much more. What began as a conversation over coffee became a substantial blueprint overnight. It was time to let Woman this Month become the mirror of the woman of today — contemporary, stylish and successful. It was time for change. It was time to put together our 125th issue! Recognising the modern woman, Maryam Toorani has given the magazine a fresh look. New columns have been added to the mix as well. Fernanda Langhammer starts us off with a fair share of style updates followed by a fashion shoot. She shows us that our inner diva isn’t meant to be hidden away. Simi Kamboj had the privilege of speaking with Anne Doyle, the author of Powering Up!, who tells us about her purpose — to help push the edges of opportunity for girls and women. In the lifestyle section, we dig into topics ranging from housekeeping to house help. We also look into health fads like clean eating and the gluten-free diet. Enjoy!

Food

Old-Fashioned

Fry-Up By James Claire

Four words that are rarely spoken today — old-fashioned fry-up — conjure up memories of our youth. They have become about as politically incorrect as most childhood stories. But as with most things that are said to be bad for us, there is a degree of misconception. es, fried food is bad for us, but as with cakes, chocolates and all things delicious, if eaten in moderation, and within a balanced diet, they are not the killers they are made out to be. The issue for most of us is that we tend to overdo fried foods the same we do with cakes and pastries; either we eat too much or none at all. To be truthful to the words themselves most of us see an ‘old-fashioned fry-up’ as a

Y

traditional English breakfast consisting of crispy bacon, sausages, kidneys, eggs, fried tomatoes, mushrooms, hash browns, black pudding, baked beans and a sprig of parsley. This month I want to return some glory to traditional fried foods, which are a staple of most restaurant franchises anyway, and are definitely here to stay. So, I see no reason to shy away from the issue of their deliciousness. Whether it be fried chicken, fried hotdogs in

batter or fried frogs legs, fried foods are the epitome of great gastronomy when you consider that they have flavour, texture and layers; everything that modern gourmands seek in their cuisine. Battered lightly, served with a lettuce and fried in the right clean oils, there are no reasons why the four words can’t take their pride of place again at the top of any menu without fear of reprisals.

Golden Apple Fritters

Deep Fried Ice Cream

3

Golden delicious apples, peeled, cored and sliced thickly into rings 85g plain (all-purpose) flour 1/4 tspn baking soda 1/8 tspn cinnamon 1 tspn sugar 125mls sparkling soda water oil for frying

8

Apple slices should be approximately two cm in thickness l In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, sugar and soda water. The mix should be a little thinner than a pancake batter l Heat the oil in a large saucepan or deep fryer to 180 degrees Celsius l Dry the apple slices between paper kitchen towel and then dip quickly into the batter, achieving a complete even coating

l

firm rounded scoops of vanilla ice cream 300g plain digestive biscuits, finely crushed 2 eggs 1 tbspn milk oil for frying icing sugar for serving

l

l

l

l

Heat the oil in a large saucepan oo deep fryer to 180 degrees Celsius Into a large bowl sift together the flour, cornflour, baking soda, baking powder and salt Add the water and whisk together to a thick batter, free of any lumps of flour l Take the fish fillets and sprinkle both sides of the fillet with salt and pepper to season it l Test the heat of the oil to see if it is ready by dropping a small amount of the batter by itself into the oil. If it fries nicely then dip the fish and start l With the batter close to the fryer, dip the fillets one at a time into the batter, coat both sides evenly and then slide the battered fish gently and slowly into the heated oil l Do not overcrowd the frying oil, and it is best to fry just one or two pieces at a time l Allow five to six minutes for frying the fish, depending on the thickness of the fish fillets. It’s best to try one piece first and test that it is fully cooked before frying all the fillets l When cooked, remove to paper kitchen towel to drain before serving while still hot with sauce of your choice and ample French fries l

Fried Battered Fish

Dagwood Dogs

120g cup plain (all-purpose) flour, chilled 2 tbspns cornflour 1/4 tspn baking soda 1/4 tspn baking powder 1/4 tspn salt 180mls cold water 4-5 fillets quality fish such as tilapia, whiting or cod salt and black pepper oil for frying

Known by many names, Dagwood dogs were a childhood favourite of mine; globally they are known as corndogs, pluto pups and pogos among others. 180g polenta 260g plain (all-purpose) flour 2 tspns baking powder 2 tspns salt 1 egg 50g sugar 250 mls milk 24 tinned hotdogs 24 thick wooden skewers oil for frying

94

Heat the oil in a large saucepan or deep fryer to 180 degrees Celsius In a large bowl mix together the polenta and sifted flour, baking powder and salt l Add the egg and sugar and slowly stir in the milk a little at a time until a thick pancake consistency has been achieved. You may need more or less milk depending on your polenta and flour used l Dry the hot dogs on paper kitchen towel and skewer them through the centre l Holding the hotdog by the skewer dip it l

into the batter to coat it evenly, thickly and completely Carefully insert the battered hotdog into the hot oil, holding the end of the stick. Fry for about two minutes. Time will depend on the thickness of your achieved batter. l Fry one piece and then cool and break open to check it has cooked evenly and completely before cooking the remainder of the hotdogs in the same manner. l Cool slightly before serving. l

www.womanthismonth.com

Carefully dip the battered apple slices into the hot oil one at a time Do not over fill the fryer. Cook one or two at a time and allow them to cook to a golden brown before removing apple fritters onto paper kitchen towel to drain and cool When cooled, dust with icing sugar or a mix of cinnamon and caster sugar and serve immediately with ice cream

l

l

Ensure that the day before deep frying your ice cream that the scoops are made and frozen so that they are firm when needed l Crush the digestive biscuits in a blender until finely ground l Remove the ice cream balls from the freezer and roll each one in the crushed biscuit powder and then return quickly to the freezer once they are all coated. l Refreeze for at least one hour l In a mixing bowl whisk the eggs with milk l Remove the ice cream balls again coat each ball first in the egg mixture, shaking off excess liquid then roll in a second coating of the digestive biscuit crumbs l Refreeze again for one hour Heat the oil in a large saucepan or deep fryer to 180 degrees Celsius l Using a large slotted spoon take each ball of ice cream and lower it into the hot oil and deep fry quickly for 20-25 seconds. Do not let the ice cream ball slide off the spoon at any stage l Remove quickly and set onto paper towel quickly, before placing onto a serving dish. Dust with icing sugar and serve immediately l Repeat with remaining balls of ice cream one at a time

Preventing Osteoporosis Our expert: Dr Jamal Saleh, orthopaedic surgeon, founder Orthocare Centre

As age catches up with you, chances are you have ignored the health of your bones until a tiny trauma one day results in a painful fracture you can’t explain. Osteoporosis continues to baffle many women and take them by surprise, but our experts assure us that it’s a treatable and reversible condition.

“Certain individuals are at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis earlier than others. These include people who have medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lactose intolerance, cancers, multiple sclerosis, and diabetic bone disease or mal-absorption syndromes. Too much smoking, abuse of alcohol or the use of corticosteroids also puts the bones at a greater risk,” he observes. However, from his own experience Dr Jamal knows that osteoporosis should not be confused with low bone mineral density, a condition that can arise out of Vitamin D deficiency. “I was only 41 when I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. I’d been suffering from a malabsorption syndrome for years and had stopped consuming dairy products since then. I had been on corticosteroids, which put me in the high risk category. I started exercising and took regular doses of Vitamin D and calcium supplements in addition to the medication. Now, my bone mineral density levels are back to normal. I’m not sure whether it was osteoporosis or just Vitamin D imbalance, which resulted in weak bones,” says Dr Saleh.

part of the normal ageing process, osteoporosis is, simply put, a condition where the bones may become porous and waste away. In average human beings, the bone density gradually starts wearing off from the age 30 onwards, but for some, this bone loss is more rapid. Women are more likely to develop this condition since they have lighter frames and smaller bones to begin with. Breaking a bone due to osteoporosis is tougher to deal with compared to fractures in those who do not have the condition. Osteoporotic bones often heal more slowly and less completely than normal bones, probably because they contain fewer bone minerals and other materials essential for healing. Often, osteoporotic spinal fractures can have a devastating impact. They lead to chronic back pain, loss in height, deformity, immobility, increased number of bed ridden days, and even reduced pulmonary function. Their impact on women’s quality of life can be profound, resulting in a loss of self-esteem and development of a distorted body image and depression. Two experts in Bahrain give us the lowdown on this condition and provide tips on keeping it at bay.

95

Fried up fury Your article in the April edition about ‘old fashion fry-ups’ really got me thinking how the current culinary scenario has made ‘frying’ a dirty word. Moderation seems to be a thing of the past and one can either look fabulous eating only salads or be an overweight case study on a reality show because of popping in too many pies. You eat a little fritter one day and you feel guilty for weeks. But often what a crispy, golden, good ol’ southern style apple pie can do for you, the stuff from Weight Watchers certainly cannot. I was all relieved to read the piece by James Claire when everyone around me is herding away to no carbs, no fat, no taste…no life. I tried one of the recipes: the very interesting looking fried ice cream. After a few failed attempts, I did actually manage to get a few scoops right. Luisa, by email.

www.womanthismonth.com

The most effective way to prevent osteoporosis in this high-risk group is to have optimal levels of Vitamin D levels, at around 75 ng/dl. “More than 80 per cent of people in Bahrain are deficient in Vitamin D and without this essential nutrient, the intake of calcium is useless,” says Dr Jamal. “A campaign is now underway in Bahrain to have food such as wheat flour fortified with this vitamin to serve the interests of the larger population.” Managing Osteoporosis Our expert: Dr Sumod Sukumaran, orthopaedic surgeon, KIMS Medical Centre Family studies show that there’s a motherdaughter link in the development of osteoporosis, so if your family members have a strong history of a thin body frame, hormonal imbalance, unexplained fractures and trauma, chances are you have inherited this condition. Women with such a family history should opt

for early screening, including bone density tests from the age of 40 to get an early diagnosis. Once they’ve started undergoing treatment, annual checkups and screenings are recommended to keep track of their progress. Know your medication According to Dr Sukumaran, osteoporosis is a highly treatable condition, which can be reversed substantially through medication and changes in lifestyle. Osteoporosis medications are primarily of two types, medicines that slow bone loss and drugs that increase the rate of bone formation. It’s the hormones that primarily assist in bone building, as they transport minerals and nutrients to the bones. Parathyroid hormones which increase the rate of bone formation form a distinct category of anabolic drugs, and are currently the only osteoporosis medicine approved by the FDA that rebuilds bone. Treatment to boost parathyroid hormones aims at not only building bone but also lowering the risk of bone breakage. Doctors will sometime prescribe bisphosphonates, which act directly on the bone structure to reduce the rate of bone loss. It is mostly prescribed for post-menopausal women with low bone density or to prevent osteoporosis that is induced by corticosteroids. Hormone replacement therapy is another treatment option for post menopausal women, depending on whether they’ve had their uterus removed; in which case, only estrogen is prescribed. However, there are side effects to the treatment and patients need to consult their physician before embarking on any longterm medication. Healthier bones I found the article on osteoporosis really informative and very well researched. It was also a scary revelation of how easily one can come under the high risk zone for developing this condition. It’s hard to imagine anyone having low vitamin D levels here in Bahrain. However, since a lot of us remain indoors and hardly get out in the sun, some people, including myself have dangerously low levels. Although I am on medication, getting to know more about the diet and exercises through the article was really encouraging. Rasha, by email. Campaign

Time for Action By Simi Kamboj

For a desert island surrounded by the ocean, it’s remarkable how little attention we pay to the coastal environment and marine life in Bahrain. Khawla Al Muhannadi speaks of her undertaking to mobilise resources within the Kingdom.

Khawla Al Muhannadi

WRITE IN AND WIN This month’s star letter will win a one-of-a-kind gift from Bellacura. To win a 'garden in a bottle' worth BD60, send us your views and opinions on our May 2013 edition either by email to editor@womanthismonth.com, by fax to 17 813-700 or by post to PO Box 20461.

s the first female president of a mixed gender NGO, Khawla Al Muhannadi comes across as an articulate environmental evangelist who specialises in coaching youth and children. “This initiative was launched in response to a lack of awareness towards environmental issues, especially those related to people’s behaviour, lifestyle and attitudes towards wildlife and natural resources,” says Khawla, president of Environment Friends Society (EFS). “We decided to make a difference by helping people understand the impact of their actions,” she says. At EFS, close attention is paid to environmental education and awareness, especially among the younger generation. Her brief includes visits to schools, taking school children on environmental trips to threatened habitats and holding environmental contests in schools. She also conducts public seminars and lectures as well as campaigning to protect threatened habitats and species. The rescue of marine animals in distress is an area close to Khawla’s heart. Earlier this

year, EFS volunteers rescued a loggerhead turtle from a beach on Amwaj Islands after a local resident raised alarm. “The animal was covered with seaweed and unable to keep afloat. After rescuing it from the sea, we took it to a safe location, where it’s being cared for. We plan to release it on another beach where it has a better chance of survival,” she says. She rescued another turtle, this one was a hawksbill, from the beach at Seef; this animal, though, was badly injured and will need a few months to recover before it can be released into the sea. “We’re worried and alarmed over the instances of dead dolphins, dugongs and sea turtles in recent years. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of a few minutes. If people can alert us the moment they spot a marine animal in distress, the chances of its survival are much higher,” she notes. Having grown up in the green neighbourhood of Riffa, Khawla derives her inspiration from childhood memories of the sea, the trees and

birds and the lost natural heritage since then. “Already, many birds that were visible in Bahrain in my childhood have vanished. We don’t want our natural world heritage to disappear entirely,” she says. The Reem programme launched for little environmental leaders (aged between 5 and 17) aims to create awareness, where every child volunteers time to contribute something, either in the form of a painting, an essay or a poem dedicated to nature. The society also holds a bi-annual event for families, the Child and Environment Festival. The EFS will mark World Environment Day in June with a two-day workshop for training the trainers in water conservation. “Around 30 participants will learn how to lead a water-wise lifestyle and get trained to teach others. Participants will include teachers and civil societies working with housewives, hoteliers and environmental educators. Those wishing to participate can send their request to efs.bahrain@hotmail.com or through our Facebook page,” Khawla adds. www.womanthismonth.com

Call for environment It was really inspiring to read Khawla Al Muhannadi’s interview in WTM. It is strange how environmental issues are such a small part of our thought process here in Bahrain. Being an island nation, the least we can do is preserve its marine life. It’s commendable that Khawla took this responsibility upon her and is raising awareness in the Kingdom. Having lived in the country for five years, I wasn’t even aware that some of its local species of birds have already disappeared. I hope more awareness is raised for this cause because the situation is really alarming. Claudia, by email.

EMMY ROSSUM ‘Modernist fairytale’ seems to be the inspiration for the actor’s outfit. The Tory Burch dress mixes elements of femininity and gets spiced up with the red flowers attached to the top. It is certainly a cute look for her mignon figure and also a way to stand out in the crowd.

SOLANGE KNOWLES The ‘70s flair is in the air when we see Solange Knowles dressed in Kenzo’s outfit paired with the signature afro to attend the Costume Institute Gala 2013 in New York. The dress pattern and amazing cut gives a contemporary look to Beyoncé’s sister, which we all love to see.

CLASSIC '60S

The decade was an important period for fashion history. Mary Quant created the miniskirt; the bikini came into the scenario. The A-line skirt shape that we see in today’s pieces was the trend of the moment at the time. This look recreates the style with contemporary touches as the folded details in the top and a longer length for the skirt. Colour-blocking was the rule and contrasting shades were everywhere. The clean look is perfect to spice up the classic style for a work day.

In the late ‘60s and all through the ‘70s, colours got brighter and a new trend was about to take shape — the hippie style with bell-bottom jeans, tie-dye pieces and frayed clothes. The trend was so widely embraced that we instantly think of the retro approach when we see them in stores. Flared trousers are an icon of the period and contemporary cuts bring low waists and a very slim upper part. A top with a contrasting collar is the best piece to get into the style. You can finish the look with high-heeled sandals and a hat with a wide brim.

FASHION | 5 tips

Good asNew 1. Handbags are to women what cars are to men. They are the single most worn items in our closets and it’s high time we start taking care of them!

Don’t leave it on the floor

In this part of the world, placing bags on the floor is considered bad luck. Looks like our grandmothers had it right. A sure way to make your handbags last longer is to keep them away from the ground. Think of all those germs.

2. 3.

Keep in a cool, dry place Keeping our most treasured items away from the sun goes without saying. Bahrain’s summer heat wrecks havoc on our cars, let alone our handbags. Always store your totes in a dry, cool area.

Proper storage

There is good reason your designer purchases come with stuffings and a dust bag – for storage. If you’ve already discarded them an easy DIY storage replacement is a pillowcase. Stuff your bags with paper as to not lose their shape.

Accessorize

24 July 2013

4. 5.

Get cleaning

Do not use leather or suede cleaners created for shoes, cars or furniture, these are usually soap-based and could leave stains. Another bag menace is ink, refrain from using alcohol to clean up pen stains and instead go with white eraser — don’t rub too hard though as that could remove colour. For a fool-proof way to remove any odour from handbags — place a container of baking soda inside.

Don’t overstress

Ladies, there is a fine line between handbags and luggage. As tempting as it is to leave the house carrying everything you could possibly need, don’t. Carry only your essentials, overloading your purse will stretch the material and ruin the shape.

SUMMER Frocks Everyday is a fashion show and the world is your runway; the women in Bahrain clearly live by that rule. WTM looks in to how three girls style their dresses this summer.

Alessandra Faria (Marketing manager)

THE DRESS

Style inspiration: My style is a lot about how I feel each day. One day I am hippie, the other (or most days) I am girly, and maybe I have a rocker day. Of course fashion blogs and lookbooks from my favourite brands help me keep up with the trends to make them fit my mood. Brands you are wearing: Dress by MMJ, biker jacket by H&M, flats by Calvin Klein and Michael Kors watch.

Ashwathy Shyamkumar (Buyer and blogger)

Style inspiration: It all depends on my mood, really. There are days I’ll go all out and put a lot of thought into my outfit and there are days when I simply like to pull up my hair into a top knot and go extremely casual. Brands you are wearing: Dress from Quiz, shoes from Spring, clutch from Centrepoint, belt from Camaieu, bracelets from Mango, Monsoon and Accessorize.

Maha AlMulla (Accountant by day; blogger by night)

Your style in a sentence: Minimalist, monochromatic most of the time; always looking for a polished, timeless look. Favourite summer trend: I am currently experimenting with adding colours to my wardrobe. Blues and whites with a hint of florals are just a few of the things I am opening up to.

40 July 2013

Most women love changes in their overall look! We vary the style of our hair, its colour, make it straight or create volume with curls. However, when it comes to cutting them, things get serious. Most of us just trim our hair from time to time and it is more than enough. On the other hand, the brave dive into the short haircut trend, going from long locks to tiny manes. The cute and trendy pixie is styling many heads, creating amazing looks. Hollywood celebrities have been embracing it for a while and are inspiring some of us to follow their lead. The long tresses of Anne Hathaway and Charlize Theron were replaced by the very chic, short haircuts, which intensified their natural beauty, turning all the attention to the face and exposed neck.

In short

When thinking about cutting your hair short, first consider your face shape. It is not that any particular face cannot result in a great style, but a few fine points should be taken into consideration. For round faces, it would be better to cut it tight on the sides, so you don’t widen the frame. Long faces should opt to keep a fringe with less volume at the top. Small faces tend to look best with less volume on the sides and no fringe. If you’ve mastered these points, you will rock the style. Another thing to keep in mind is that you will certainly need to pay more visits to your hairdresser to keep the cut together at all times.

In style

Contrary to popular belief, short hair gives you the opportunity of styling it in many different ways. A sexy touch can be achieved with styling powders, which you can apply on the tips of the hair, about two centimetres from the root. It offers a matte finish and wonderful volume. The wet look can be done with the use of gels and shine sprays. Apply it on damp or dry hair; with a tail comb create the sleek look. For a textured style, make use of styling pastes to mould it in any way you like. It will hold tight all day long; you can apply more during the course of the day.

In mind

Don’t forget that when you choose to go short, your prominent features like big lips, eyes or nose are going to be overexposed. Make sure you know what you want to show off and what you want to hide. A great short haircut is all about the details to make your face look its best!

On the shelves:

Redken styling paste; use your imagination to create different looks. TIGI Bed Head wax stick, an option for the styling paste. Tresemme extra hold spray.

Before

After

Alicia Hendrickson's 'short' story WTM: How long did you take to finally go for the short hair style? AH: I played with the idea for about two weeks. I knew once I made the decision, I needed to act on it. Otherwise I would have probably not gone through with the cut. I only waited two weeks to get the cut because my stylist Patricia Turner, from Joz Salon & Spa, was booked. WTM: What did you do with the hair? AH: I donated my hair to a charity called Locks of Love. The charity requires a minimum length of 25.4cm of hair in order to fashion wigs for children undergoing cancer treatment who have lost their hair. I don’t like wasting things and wanted to ensure that my hair could be put to good use. WTM: Do you find it more practical? AH: Yes, because I spend far less time braiding, teasing, twisting and pinning for various styles and updos. Not to mention I use a lot less shampoo, conditioner and smoothing serum. It only takes five minutes or less to dry my hair, whereas before it took nearly 20 minutes. That being said, I am surprised at how much more styling product I use in my hair now on a regular basis. When my hair was long, if I didn’t want to do anything with it, I’d just brush it into a ponytail, which gets boring really fast. WTM: How do you like to style it? AH: My stylist gave me a fantastic cut that is asymmetrical. Most days I sweep it to the left side and just barely tuck the longer fringe pieces behind my ear. However, if I brush it to the right side, my length appears much shorter and lets me create an edgier style. I also smooth comb my hair down to either side for a classic look, a lot like Anne Hathaway for the premiere of Les Misérables. WTM: Did you like the final result? AH: I was totally stoked! Cutting off that much hair in one go felt liberating. Some of my friends didn’t even recognise me at first glance. Yes, I do run product through my hair, and hairspray it daily but it takes me three to five minutes from start to finish. I rarely see my brushes and combs anymore. I’ve had complete strangers walk up to me and compliment me on my hair. That never happened before!

BEAUTY | 10 tips

Glossy Tresses Are sun hats not your style? Would you rather spend time out basking in the sun rather than going through day long hair care regimens in a salon? Here’s how you can rock healthy-looking hair without either hassle.

1.

Let it shine

I’ve lived with what I like to call ‘the Hermione syndrome’ all of my life. With no wand or magic to spare me from the bird’s nest, I assumed blowdrying and straightening irons are my new best friends. I’ve never been more wrong! People would kill for natural curls and I soon learnt why when I used the simplest product there is in the market — hair serum! Remember not to overuse it. A pea-sized amount worked into wet hair from tips to root should do the trick.

3.

Leave it in

2.

We all know the trick to get the most out of your conditioner is to leave it for a short while before you wash it off. Some even wrap a warm towel around it for a steam effect. Investing in a leave-in conditioner is worth it. There are options like lotions and spray-ons. Use very little; you don’t want to weigh your hair down.

42 July 2013

My shower is as close as you’ll ever get to Mordor. Big mistake! Hot water is the recipe to dry, dull hair. The quick fix is to rinse with cool water after the shampoo-conditioner routine. It closes the cuticle and allows light to reflect off the hair.

The right direction

For those who blow-dry their hair at home, pay attention to directing the nozzle down the hair shafts. Hold each section of hair with a round brush as it helps styling it much easier and quicker, which means less heat. Finish with a blast of cool air, giving it the same results as cold water.

Mango

4.

Keep it cool

www.womanthismonth.com

8.

5.

From within

With the scorching heat, you don’t need to be told to drink plenty of water. Did you know that aside from keeping your insides healthy, it nourishes your locks as well? Eight glasses a day is ideal. Reduce your carbon footprint; keep your own water bottle by your side to avoid using more plastic ones.

9.

Take care

There’s no point doing any of the above if you’re planning to slap on a 100 kinds of harsh chemicals. With pool season at its peak, you can expect some damage due to the chlorine levels in the water. Protect your hair with a coating of leave-in moisturisers. Avoid relaxing creams, alcohol and bleach.

Snip, snip

If you can see those split ends, the chances are others can too. Nothing says dry hair like split ends. Schedule a trim every four to six weeks to maintain your hair’s health and the cut!

6.

Eat right

If I had a dinar for each time someone told me that! Vitamins A and E are mandatory for healthy hair. Proteins help hair growth as well. Add eggs and nuts to your diet plan whenever you can.

7. Wear a mask

Sometimes sun damage is inevitable. Replenish the strands with deep conditioning masks at least once a week. Sit with it in a steam room if you have one in your building. Since I don’t, I settle for a vaporiser and a sitcom marathon. www.womanthismonth.com

10. Iron it out

The straighter the hair, the shinier it looks. However, styling with heat reduces the moisture in the strands. Silicone-plated flatirons are better than the typical ceramic and metallic ones most commonly found in the markets. It straightens your hair in one pass, resulting in less damage than usual flatirons. July 2013

BEAUTY | q&a

Ask the Experts

Q: Why is hydrating between exercises significant? What should gym-goers watch out for during Ramadan? A: The goal of drinking water during exercise is to prevent excessive dehydration (two per cent body weight loss from water deficit) and excessive changes in electrolyte balance to avert compromised exercise performance. Fluid ingestion influences performance by delaying the evolution of core temperature by acting as a ‘heat sink’. An increased central drive and motivation may be experienced by being well hydrated. During Ramadan, eat a balanced diet. This includes proteins that are easy to digest, food rich in fibre and at least 1.5 litres of water. The best time to hit the gym during the Holy Month is either early in the morning (after the first meal of the day), an hour before breaking fast or after the first light meal (Iftar). The approach to sport during Ramadan should be cautious and moderate in order to avoid any health malaise. The key to a healthy body remains in moderation of food as well as of physical exercise. With moderation comes consistency and that is all Ramadan is about. Keep it tight and keep it light! Sheezell Ali, gym instructor-personal/group trainer, Oxygen Gym

Q: Are acne pills really safe to use? A: There are very many acne pills which are used to treat acne. The pills vary from low dose term antibiotics and hormone medications to excellent medications like isotretinoin. All these are quite old medications and we have a large body of experience over decades. Antibiotics are first line of treatment. At a low dose certain antibiotics have an antiinflammatory effect which helps in acne. Isotretinoin is a Vitamin A derivative and gives the best results. As we all know, there is no medication which has zero side effects, but we should also remember that everyone does not get side effects. Acne causes scarring and disfigurement of the face, which are difficult to treat. Under guidance of an expert dermatologist, the treatment is quite safe and no young person should suffer from acne and its consequences.

Q. What should we watch out for? A: Isotretinoin is a tablet recommended for the treatment of moderate and severe acne. It is very safe, but you must do some investigation before medication like complete blood count and liver enzymes. Checking kidney functions and taking a pregnancy test are mandatory for women. If everything is normal, you can start the medication according to body weight until you have reached to ideal dose. Side effects include dryness of the skin, lips and eyes. It also increases liver enzymes during the course of the medication. Teratogenicity, ability to cause birth defects, are also highly probable. It is vital to take precautions while on these drugs. Use moisturiser regularly for dryness. Monthly pregnancy tests are advised as well.

Soaring on Wings by Simi Kamboj

From the frontlines of a generation of women who helped redefine the world of work in America, Anne Doyle now examines the reasons why women remain underachievers and why they need to power up.

Anne Doyle is part of a generation of trailblazing American women, who in the 1970s moved into professions that had previously been exclusively male bastions — television, journalism, law, engineering and corporate boardrooms. In the last four decades, she has been tested in what she calls some of the toughest leadership laboratories, including sports locker rooms, the global auto industry, political office and parenting.

48 July 2013

We caught up with Anne when she was in Bahrain to learn about the experience of women in the Kingdom. Woman This Month (WTM): Tell us about your journey as a sports journalist and how you managed to break the barriers in US? Anne Doyle (AD): I began my career in 1972 as one of the first on-camera, female TV news reporters and anchors. In 1978, I was hired by

CBS-TV as one of the first female TV sports broadcasters in the U.S. Covering sports has always meant going into the locker rooms after games to interview athletes. I knew that because my father was a well-known sports broadcaster. Although it was very controversial at the time, my father told me that I must go in the locker rooms, along with all the male reporters, or I would have no credibility as a sports journalist. www.womanthismonth.com

It wasn’t easy and I faced many tests from athletes, but today there are over 1,500 women journalists covering sports in the U.S. I was inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame for my leadership role in opening sports journalism and locker rooms to women. I love meeting women who tell me that watching me on TV when they were little girls gave them hope that they, too, could achieve their dreams.

WTM: What was the purpose behind your book, Powering Up? AD: I’m primarily a journalist and I am always looking for the next story. I realised that never in the history of the world have there been so many highly-educated, professionally experienced, ambitious women in the workforce. Still, women hold less than 20 per cent of the top leadership positions (beyond the glass ceilings) in every major profession and industry. We had been told ‘you can’t do this’ and we have proved everyone wrong, but somewhere along the way, we’d stopped in our evolution. I wanted to tell these women that it was time to get going and power up! WTM: Would you agree that women are their own worst enemies? AD: My mantra is: Every woman for herself is a losing strategy. Over the past decades, women all over the world have made incredible progress as high achievers. But as a cultural tribe, we have barely begun to leverage our collective influence. Ambitious men are very competitive, but they also understand the need to help one another in order to achieve their professional and financial goals. Once women start doing the same for other women, we will see tremendous breakthroughs. WTM: What influence did your parents have on your outlook? AD: Both my parents had college degrees, they believed in travel and brought home people from other cultures, and this was in the 1960s. After my mother received a small inheritance, our parents took us out of school and across www.womanthismonth.com

Anne Doyle aged 2 on father's lap at WJVA Radio station

Europe in a car, along with our school books. When we tried to study in the car, they said ‘put aside those books and look outside’. They made us understand that there are lots of ways to live, lots of languages and cultures and many things to learn in the world.

Anne Doyle interviewing football player Billy Sims in locker room

WTM: After your stint in journalism and then in the corporate sector, why did you decide to run for city council? AD: I feel it’s very important that women run for office, even when they’ve attained success in other spheres, because they need to inspire others as role models. There’s a saying, ‘if you can’t see it, you can’t be it’. We also need the culture of having women in leadership roles simply because it helps people get comfortable with the idea of seeing women on top.

WTM: Most successful career women tend to feel guilty about time spent away from their family. What’s the solution here? AD: We have the same problem in the US and I don't understand this guilt. A man once told me, 'I don't understand why women feel so guilty. I think I'm a great father, but I spend much less time with our kids than my wife does. Yet she feels guilty about not doing more as a mother'. Women have to stop believing they have to do it all. Career and home are two sides that women can integrate, just as men do. You don’t have to be perfect. Just give your best. WTM: One charge against women leaders in the corporate sector has been that they take emotional decisions which works to their detriment. Do you agree? AD: This view bothers me. Just think how emotional men are. We’d have had far fewer wars and armed conflict if men didn’t take emotional decisions. In truth, women’s emotions are a strength, they feel deeply and show their emotions by reacting appropriately. On the other hand, men tend to keep things bottled until they explode with emotion.

Anne Doyle CBS Sports AD

WTM: What does it take for a woman to break the glass ceiling? AD: To put the glass ceilings in every profession behind us, women must master leadership skills, beginning with discovering their pupose and learning how to raise their voice. Women should start supporting one another and build collective power; we need large numbers of women cracking those glass ceilings, not just a few. Lastly, we need men to actively encourage and mentor talented women moving into top leadership roles, because men still hold most of the keys to the ‘leadership locker room doors.’ g July 2013

Craving Speed On a short trip to Bahrain, Tamara Tippler is on a break from her usual routine of racing down mountain slopes. She talks about her passion — the driving force in her life. A self-confessed speed demon and racing junkie, 22-year old Tamara is among the five youngest members of the Austrian Downhill Ski team. She made her debut at the FIS race at 15, represented Austria at the Europe Cup at 18 and first appeared at the World Cup at 21. She tells us why she loves the sport where her mum is too scared to watch her. WTM: What drew you to skiing? Tamara Tippler (TT): It’s the most popular sport in Austria. After children have learnt to walk and run, the next thing they do is put on their skis. I started skiing at the age of three and racing down the hills has been my favourite pastime since then. Every morning, I would check the sky outside and beg my mother to allow me to go skiing. WTM: When did you decide to turn professional? TT: When I was 14, I realised that skiing was my life and this is all I wanted to do. WTM: What’s the next big event that you’re looking forward to compete in? TT: I’m really looking forward to the Winter Olympics in 2015. I want to improve my rank-

ings this year to feature among the top 30 in the world. WTM: What is your biggest challenge as a sportsperson? How do you deal with it? TT: The high speed of up to 140 kilometres per hour, different slope conditions and several slopes make it challanging. There isn’t much time in this sport because it’s all over in two minutes. You need to really concentrate, packing in everything into these two minutes. Physical fitness and power is the key to success in this sport. I train at least six hours everyday throughout the year.

based in Bahrain. It’s an amazing place, totally different from my native Austria and the people here are very friendly. I’ve been to the Formula One race track and out in the sea on a speed boat, and loved it. The cars are very impressive as well. WTM: What’s your ultimate ambition in life? TT: I want to win the World Cup and an Olympic gold medal for Austria. WTM: Who or what has been your greatest inspiration? TT: It’s the love of skiing and the thrill of flying down a slope every time that drives me.

WTM: What do you tell yourself when you haven’t performed well in a race? TT: Once a race is over, the next day is always a new day and a new opportunity. At the World Cup earlier this year, I was about four seconds behind world champion Lindsay Vonn and I thought that was great! WTM: What brings you to Bahrain? TT: I was invited by Conpeed, my sponsor, an Austrian-owned engineering company www.womanthismonth.com

Playing for Keeps For a schoolgirl, Mona Majid Al Laheq has come a long way. The female face of PlayStation in the Middle East talks about her foray into the gaming community and giving female gamers a voice. Eighteen year-old Mona Majid comes across as a shy teenager, but she’s the first woman to tread the male domain of gaming in Bahrain. Even as she waits to graduate from the Naseem International School this summer, Mona works at DvLZGaME, a media partner of PlayStation, doing gaming reviews and interviews to encourage women to participate in the gaming community. Mona is one of the first cosplayers (costume player) in Bahrain to participate in anime and comic convections in Dubai. This year will see her judging the Games 13 cosplay competition, while the next year she will judge the cosply competition at ComicCon. WTM: When did you start gaming? Mona Majid (MM): I was raised by three brothers who were avid gamers and I think their passion for gaming must have rubbed off on me. I learnt many gaming tricks from them and then managed to convert some of my friends as well. Games such as Kingdom Hearts and Pokemon are my favourites. www.womanthismonth.com

WTM: Tell me about your PlayStation assignment. MM: I’m working with PlayStation Middle East to generate media and social media content especially for female gamers in this region. I make videos where I talk about gaming and walk my viewers through a game as I’m playing it. My videos will be posted next month, first on the PlayStation website and then on YouTube. WTM: What do you do when you’re not gaming? MM: I love to create artwork and anime characters. I also play the guitar and compose music for myself; I’m thinking about producing a game with a soundtrack that I will write. WTM: What big events are you hosting this year? MM: I’m really excited about GamesCom in Germany in August this year, where I will cover the event for DvLZGaME and for PlayStation Middle East. I will be doing

interviews and posting videos online. Around Christmas, we’ll have the launch of PlayStation 4 in Bahrain, which I will unbox and post my review online. WTM: Is it possible to make a career out of gaming? MM: Gaming and hosting game-related events is my passion. Besides PlayStation, I have offers from other companies to generate videos and social media content for them. Going forward, I plan to study graphics design so that I can incorporate that with gaming into my career. WTM: Why haven’t women taken to gaming the way men have? MM: There are a lot of women gamers in the Middle East. It’s just that they don’t come forward and show themselves. The three managers of PlayStation in Dubai are all women and gamers themselves. It’s time women gamers had a voice; they shouldn’t hold themselves back, but go out there and assert themselves. July 2013

It very well could be. The Amwaj Islands stole our hearts since its inception. For some of us it is home; for others it’s a getaway. Add kitesurfing here it to your bucket list.

The Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Park is one venue that is worth the hype that it brought with it. Your kids will love flying kites there. Make it a weekly event with picnics, friends and family. Are you the athletic kind? Give it a rest! Try the sports massage at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Spa. The experience is just inexplicable. The venue itself is an escape from the real world, as it should be.

21. Join the cause

Offering a helping hand need not be limited to the human species. The love for animals and the need to protect them from harm is just as crucial. BSPCA watches out for our four-legged friends. You can walk them over the weekend as part of your contribution.

22. Grab a patty

13. Hair matters

Who has the time to shave, wax and epilate anymore? The laser hair removal procedure is a godsend. Save up and get it done. Marafie Clinic is just the place.

The Middle Eastern world is known to be house proud. We’ve found a liking for Details, which showcases an extensive range of unique furniture. It gives you that edge in your interiors.

15. Eat to live

There isn’t a soul who hasn’t gone food hunting in the 338 district of Adliya. The hub of stand-alone restaurants, cafes and lounges offers you a plethora of dining options. Name a cuisine and they’ve got it.

Have a truly Arabian experience with classes at Muharraq Horse Riding School. Those of you who have mastered the skill can lease ponies and join a race. They have training sessions for beginners and advanced riders.

18. Into the wild

Too many times, I’ve heard people complain that their children don’t have an opportunity to interact with animals. It might be a long way there, but Al Areen Wildlife Park is well worth the drive.

Be it from pubs, steak houses, fast food joints or dedicated restaurants, you have got to love the burger! We live by the many options at Johnny Rockets and the lettuce wraps at Blaze Burgers.

The first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Middle East is their entrancing ouds and attars. Find some of the best aromatic oils in the souqs in Manama or Muharraq. A little hunting might fetch you knock offs of high-end perfumes.

28. Bookworm central

When we’re not wrapped up with work, you can find us with our nose deep in a book. What we found to be the best addition to Bahrain’s map is the Words bookstore and café in Budaiya. The treasured venue is also home to many readings and launches.

29. In the name of art

If there’s one thing the Kingdom can be proud of, it is its unreserved art scene. Galleries can be spotted in every district. However, Al Riwaq stands out with the many events and exhibitions it hosts in the 338 district.

30. Hit the beach

26.

32. Behind the scenes

Contrary to popular belief, a woman does not wake up looking stunning. It isn’t just clothes and make-up that make her gorgeous. Hidden within her closet is an array of grooming appliances that create magic. From hairdryers to epilators, we end up finding all we need at Yaquby Stores.

45. It fits!

49. The oasis

Thankfully, there is no shortage of coffee houses in the Kingdom. However, one of the yummiest offered in the Kingdom comes from an Italian restaurant called Cucina Italiana in Juffair. 44. The right fit

Nothing can come between a woman and her love for shoes. Add comfort in the mix and it’s a match made in heaven. That’s precisely what Hush Puppies has to offer. Find the perfect pair at Shoe Citi outlets.

Don’t know what to do with all those photo frames you’ve hoarded up over the years? Here are some unique ideas that will help to dress your walls. Scarf out We all own a few scarves that are either too good to wear or that have surpassed its days in the closet. Find a feminine frame and voila! Roller coaster From age-old doilies to random collectibles, we have way too many coasters in our sideboards than we’d care to use. Make a fun assortment of them for your kitchen or dining room walls. Work of art There is no rule that a frame ought to bind a glass pane. Create a diorama of sorts using twigs, craft paper and wire for a three-dimensional effect. This could be a fun DIY project for the kids. 2

In the family Got a family heirloom that you treasure? Frame it. We’re not talking jewellery and crystals. I’ve got my late grandmother’s embroidery work preserved in the simplest black frame. Nothing to it! Get rid of the backing; keep it as simple as possible to have that empty centre. And hang it up on a wall. This looks best on brick and stone walls, especially when you have a set of empty frames. 1. THE One 2. Crate & Barrel

On the safe side Cradle is a unique blend of two typologies of seating: a net structured hammock and a conventional upholstered lounge chair. It stems from the studio’s materials-driven and process-led industrial design approach of Benjamin Hubert. It is the result of extensive research into the construction of mesh materials and a study of the relationships between traditional seating components. The London-based designer utilises a custom-made cut pattern that allows a non-elastic textile to perform in a three-dimensional way. This allows for the correct tension to comfortably support the body; it visually and physically reduces the product’s weight. Take cover Also from Benjamin Hubert, Talma is named after a type of cloak. It describes the chair’s construction with a softly padded textile wrapped around a lightweight metal framework, mirroring the way a cloak would wrap the body. Talma utilises a CNC-shaped steel framework to define the shape of the chair with integrated upholstery straps for support. The framework is enveloped in a custom-made textile with integrated padding, created in collaboration with the Dutch textile company, Innofa. The cover is secured with a series of zips and two fastenings at the front of the chair. This combination of metal frame and padded textile allows the chair to use a minimal amount of polyurethane foam, while a conventional armchair would be covered almost entirely with it. This reduces the carbon footprint of the product. Bend the rules Raw-Edges is the official collaboration between Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay, which started after many years of sharing life, thoughts and ideas. Yael’s main focus includes turning two-dimensional sheet materials into curvaceous functional forms, whereas Shay is fascinated by how things move, function and react. Through Kenny, the designers wanted to achieve a graceful, rounded three-dimensional surface using the simplest pattern — a singular linear strip. Turning flat material into three-dimensional volumetric shapes can be done in many ways, from pattern making in fashion to complex origami folding. This project is all about the effortlessness of its geometry. www.womanthismonth.com

Kenny

To emphasise the simplicity of a rectangular strip being turned into this rounded curvaceous armchair, the designers used a ‘warp and woof’ fabric, where two different coloured yarns are woven perpendicular to each other. By pulling out the warp, the longitudinal thread in a roll, more of the woof’s colour is exposed thus creating a linear graphic that emphasises the shape and geometry of Kenny. Clean Eating:

NotDiet

another

by SHAUNA NEARING LOEJ

Another day, another diet? Not exactly. A new food movement has emerged called clean eating, which is a lifestyle concept that has people running from genetically modified foods, over-processed ingredients, pesticide-laden produce and returning to good wholesome meals. Don’t confuse clean eating with other buzzwords in the nutrition world at the moment such as the paleo, raw food or the caveman diet as they may complement clean eating, but are what they say they are — diets! Highlighted by food in its purest form, meaning nothing processed or refined, clean eating is a sensible, healthy and conscientious approach to eating. Think home cooked meals with the freshest ingredients possible. As our experts reveal, with a little meal planning, anyone can serve up quick wholesome meals and have the peace of mind of knowing exactly what goes into your food.

74 July 2013

Living the clean eating way Our expert: Line Jin, CrossFit Level 1 trainer Bahrain resident Line Jin, fitness trainer and busy mother of three, is perhaps the ideal model of putting theory into action when it comes to clean eating. Line suffered for years from migraines, which were exacerbated during her last pregnancy where she was also hit with the shingles and psoriasis. Fed up with high doses of medication and a plethora of ointments, she felt it was time to take charge of her health. “I decided to do everything within my

power to come off all drugs. In fact, I threw everything I had in the bin and from that day on it was all down to eating better,” reveals Line. She cut out dairy, wheat and ‘white stuff’ such as sugar, pasta and rice. She found replacements in homemade nut milks, pestos, flax crackers, quinoa and many more healthy food options. “In my opinion, clean eating is about eating whole foods in its purest form. This means one-ingredient foods: nothing processed, nothing man-made and nothing that comes out of a package that has a long list of www.womanthismonth.com

nutrition facts with things you didn’t even know existed,” she explains. After making these dietary changes, Line recovered from the migraines and the psoriasis cleared up. “I felt healthy, strong and alive,” she admits. Making such sweeping changes to the food she and her family ate was a challenge at first because she had to learn what foods to eat and how to prepare them as meals. “I tried to imitate and replace all the flavours and all the processed food that was once part of my poor eating habits. I’ve since learned to enjoy and appreciate the pure flavours of just one food at a time. Dishes don’t have to be mixed with anything or smothered in dressings to taste good,” says Line, whose typical meal is grilled chicken breast seasoned with cumin, raw broccoli and raw walnuts, which she says is easy to prepare, super healthy and provides the right balance of carbs, fat and protein. Adapting clean eating into a family lifestyle like everything else requires some planning. “It’s a challenge to eat clean in the sense that everything needs to be available,” says Line, who does her shopping at the fish market in the Central Market area, local farms and a variety of supermarkets. By prepping

and portioning meals on the weekends, she can feed her family wholesome home-cooked meals for several days at time. “My kids eat the same but eat more carbs in forms of fruit, oats and brown rice. We keep a dairy-free home, but the kids are not restricted when out for birthday parties for example. They enjoy pizza and ice cream like other kids,” says Line who makes her own version of ice cream using frozen bananas with a toffee caramel topping made of frozen dates, grated dark chocolate and chopped walnuts to complement the sweetness.

It’s clean eating when you know what goes in your food

www.womanthismonth.com

Cooking is easy Our expert: Roaya Saleh, managing director, Villa Mamas Restaurateur Roaya Saleh is passionate about clean eating in both her family kitchen and at her Saar restaurant. “Cooking is easy,” exclaims Roaya, adding that even the most complicated dishes can be made within an hour. “It’s clean eating when you know what goes in your food.” The main idea behind clean eating is getting in the kitchen and really enjoying the simplicity of food. Both Line and Roaya dismiss the idea that we need to slave over a hot stove for hours on end, but being in the kitchen does require an understanding of the basics of food ingredients and tools that we should use. For example, if you want to make a quiche but don’t have the proper pan to make it in, then you will never make that quiche. “At the same time,” Roaya says, “we also worry too much about following recipes. Aside from baking, where we have to really follow recipes to the letter, we can and should be less rigid about measurements and ingredients in cooking. People know what they like to eat but are intimated in the kitchen. I love nuts, fruits and dried fruits. So I try to incorporate them in the dish even if the recipe doesn’t call for it because I know what I like to eat.” People need to take time, educate themselves and be in charge of their own kitchens explains Roaya who plans and prepares her family meals on weekends and before she leaves for work. “Lots of women don’t know the difference between herbs, oils or grains. I’ve had ladies ask me about quinoa, which I also July 2013

75

LIFESTYLE | wellbeing

didn’t know about until I researched it online,” she admits. Quinoa is a protein-rich seed that has garnered global attention as the new superfood due to its nutritional value and its ability to act like a wholegrain such as rice. “If you don’t know basic ingredients, then you feel afraid and say I am not going to touch it,” she says. Say no to processed foods Why would we need processed foods when all the ingredients for good wholesome foods are all around us? How can you not see them? “You see the farmers on the street selling their produce. They have the basic ingredients for a good pasta sauce such as tomatoes and herbs such as parsley, coriander and arugula to make pesto. It’s easy to make and you can jar it and put in the fridge for more meals,” encourages Roaya. Bahrain’s soil is fertile, producing a variety of seasonal vegetables including okra, aubergine, carrots, cucumbers, herbs and a variety of lettuces. Roaya also advises a visit to the fish market for good local and inexpensive fish that can be cut and filleted by the fish monger. The key is to plan your meals for the week and you will be less tempted to eat out or order in. What is clean eating? Our expert: Clean Eating, cleaneating.com Clean eating, according to the American magazine Clean Eating, is defined as consuming food in its most natural state or as close to it as possible. Clean eating is not a diet but it is a lifestyle approach to food and how it is prepared. Nutritionists agree that clean eating is a sensible approach to a healthy lifestyle. Purported benefits included a trimmer you, brighter skin, higher energy levels and an increase in general health. The first steps l Buy local and organic. Take control of the foods you buy and source local fresh produce and as much as its available, organic meats, eggs and dairy. While buying organic meat and dairy on the island can be a challenge, finding local fresh produce is a breeze with roadside stalls and weekend markets teeming with seasonal greens. l Avoid processed or refined foods. Instead of white breads, flour, pasta and rice, choose the whole grain alternatives.

76 July 2013

l Watch fats. Avoid anything high in saturated and trans fats and consume ‘heart smart’ fats such as essential fatty acids found in fish, some seeds and dark leafy greens. l Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Use seasonal produce and if cooking, steam, bake or lightly sauté to maintain as many nutrients as possible. l Eat meals and snacks. Eating three meals a day plus having two to three healthy snacks

throughout the day is the most efficient way to stay energised and burn calories. l Drink water. Drink at least two litres of water daily and limit your alcohol intake to preferably one glass of antioxidant-rich red wine a day. l Read the labels. The longer the list, the less clean the food will be. Call 17 305-031 or email villamamasbh@gmail.com.

Clean eating in Ramadan There is no better time to consider clean eating than during the Holy Month, which provides a unique opportunity to change our poor dietary habits in exchange for healthy eating. Fasting involves both a spiritual and physical journey and the cleansing of the soul. Enjoying good wholesome food during non-fasting hours is vital to this journey. While clean eating is a ‘back to basics’ approach to a healthy lifestyle, many people are not interested in the basics and go straight to attempting complicated dishes. This is why Roaya offers ‘back to basic’ courses at night throughout Ramadan.

The three-day course will cover topics like home-grown and locally abundant herbs and spices, rice and beyond, the perfect egg dishes, how to make your own stocks, pantry must-haves, recycling your daily leftovers, the dos and don’ts of frozen foods, and oil varieties and their benefits.

Skip the Carbs? by MARYAM TOORANI

We’ve been hearing the term ‘gluten-free’ for years now. The WTM team looks into the health trend that, believe it or not, actually claims bread is good for you — a specific kind at least. Gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye, can cause people who suffer from celiac disease (a chronic digestive disorder) a host of health issues including malnutrition, fatigue and headaches. All kinds of food items are now being produced to help individuals who suffer from the clinically diagnosed intolerance. The trend however, is now being sported by health and wellbeing fanatics from around the world. Yes ladies, long gone are the days when simply saying no to extra toppings and desserts would count you as health conscious. Now we even have to be particular about our dough. However nutritious this fad may be, it begs the question, is it really necessary for those of us who have a tolerance for the protein? After strenuous research, we concluded that it probably isn’t. It isn’t as healthy as it’s perceived either. What’s for certain is that gluten

78 July 2013

is the hot thing to avoid right now and this is one trend that is here to stay. This is largely thanks to celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Oprah Winfrey, who have all but acted as spokespeople for the now much hated protein. With regards to shedding kilos, many perceive this diet as the magical one-way ticket to thinner thighs and washboard abs. Unfortunately, there is no magical solution that could excuse you out of a workout. In fact, studies show that a gluten-free diet can lack vitamins, minerals and fibre. Many experts say that the weight loss is simply due to the fact that going gluten-free in effect makes you drastically reduce your calorie intake. So a less expensive way of losing weight could be to just cut down on your baked goods in general! Another thing to note is that gluten is the

element that makes dough stretchy and gives bread its texture — it also makes food tasty. So by removing it, manufacturers use more fat and sugar to make food more palatable. Our verdict It may be healthy; it is also not practical. Instead, why not opt for a gluten-less detox? Go on it for a few days or a week, it can help you rejuvenate and jumpstart your diet, making you limit your overall calorie intake. Do you have celiac disease? If you do, then a gluten-free diet is essential and you must consult a doctor. The condition, caused by an abnormal immune response to gluten can go undetected. Symptoms of celiac disease include diarrhoea, anaemia and bone pain. It can also affect the skin, hormones and joints. www.womanthismonth.com

SO help Me

by DR CLARE BECKETT-MCINROY and STACEY KILLE

There are many opportunities for expatriates to experience new ways of doing things in the Middle East. One of the most noticeable is the use of part-time or full-time help that is available to assist with childcare. A privilege afforded to a select few in many parts of the world, ‘help’ is arguably the norm for both locals and expatriates alike in Bahrain. What can they provide? How can you choose your helpers and what can you do to ensure synergy in the household? This article explores issues around help to enable

80 July 2013

informed decision-making and safety for your children. Many expatriates live away from their parents and siblings, which means that they do not have the same support they would experience back home. This includes babysitting, emotional support, collecting

children from school, someone to teach the children (in the broader sense of the word), a drive for activities — the list is endless. Some parents feel that they don’t need help aside from the odd babysitting on weekends, especially if one parent is not working. Others enjoy the privilege of having more time to www.womanthismonth.com

loved ones instead of ironing, running errands and completing chores. In fact, do you need a reason at all? For many families it is the norm to have two, three, four or more helpers. If your helper is being treated appropriately and provided with a better standard of living than they could achieve in their own country, then they will probably be very happy to work for you. Help at home can be provided by men and women in the form of drivers, nannies, gardeners, doulas and cleaners from many different countries. One helper, Nirmala Damyanthi from Sri Lanka, commented, “I do my work in the same way I would for my own home. I am happy to work because they are a very good family and I can send home money for my own family. I have been in Bahrain for 14 years.”

remuneration, respect or working conditions. Support for such workers, although available, tends to be reactive as opposed to proactive. Some people treat their home help with kindness and generosity, whilst other families treat them quite appallingly, parents and children alike! That being said, helpers may bring problems as well through unreliability, lack of skills and knowledge or the right attitude, or worse! The solution? Ensure you take up references from a reliable person or a friend, ideally, and coach your helpers in the way you want things done. Many families have two working parents and so help is essential. It’s a necessity as opposed to a luxury. In the Middle East this is a feasible and financially viable option. You may rely upon your helper(s) as you juggle the demands of your family and career. Some people see them as part of their family, whereas other families choose to keep the relationship more streamlined. It is important that your children are shown, by your example, how to treat your home helper. Teach them to understand how lucky they are to have someone to help you and

themselves or a bigger family because support is affordable and available. The main message is, if you do or do not have help, that’s your choice. Don’t judge others! Why seek help? There are, of course, many reasons why you may need an extra pair of hands, such as when you have had a new baby, if you work, whilst working on a project, studying, travelling or looking after your family. You may be fortunate enough to spend more quality time with your children, friends and www.womanthismonth.com

LIFESTYLE | parenting them. Remind children that they don’t have a magic fairy dancing behind them picking up their mess. Your child can even learn to accept and enjoy different foods, cultures, songs as lifestyles. What to look for in a helper You have decided you need or want help. So what do you look for? You will need a person that cares, that treat your children and your home in the way you want them to. You need someone who is honest and reliable. You may also want someone who speaks (and writes) good English or Arabic, has initiative and integrity. It’s a tall order. In fact, these are skills that are needed by many managing directors of large companies. So, in this sense, consider the going rate and also think about providing that little extra to ensure that when you have good help, you can keep them. Over the years, professional training for helpers has been advertised and yet rarely used by families. Is this because parents want to train their staff themselves or is it because the investment is short lived or not valued? It’s an interesting topic and yet in many countries helpers need qualifications, usually followed with a higher salary scale and remuneration. If this is not available in your budget or location, time invested initially is well worth it in the long run. There are also courses for your helper such as basic first aid provided by The First Aid Box, which is essential if you have a baby or young children. Call 36 732-223 or email firstaid@batelco.com.bh. My rules! One of the biggest issues when training a helper can be to successfully impress that you need them to exercise the same rules and expectations regarding your children’s behaviour and safety. They need to use seatbelts and car seats. They need to feed children the way you want them fed and give treats when you are happy for them to do so. They need to be honest with the children and not to accept a child speaking to them rudely. This is a difficult concept as helpers may not feel comfortable correcting your children if they behave badly and they may also want to be liked. You want your children to move towards independence and yet many children enter their teenage years expecting things to be done for them. A shared, transparent approach which is fair and consistent is the best way forward and it needs to be understood by your helper.

82 July 2013

You may see helpers that spend their working days on their mobile phones, for example. Children are usually a great judge of a good helper as children are often honest about what they like and do not like, as well as what is different or not acceptable. Speak to your children appropriately about your helper to see how they feel and have open conversations for development. Good help is available in Bahrain and for the sake of the helpers and you, the families, consider shared training sessions as a provision for training and ‘up-skilling’ your helpers! Face Up by DR JINAN DARWISH

There are so many things we watch out for as new parents: diet, skin and general health. How often do we pay attention to our baby’s sleeping positions? As traumatising as it might sound, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is something every parent should be aware of. It is the unforeseen, abrupt death of an infant under age one in which an autopsy does not display an explicable cause of death. It is the leading cause of fatality among infants aged one month to one year. The cause of SIDS is unidentified. Numerous doctors and researchers now believe that it is caused by several different factors, including problems with the baby’s ability to wake up (sleep arousal) and the incapability for the baby’s body to perceive an accumulation of carbon dioxide in the blood. On a good note, the Back to Sleep campaign launched in 1994 to get parents to stop putting babies to sleep on their tummies has been a success. In the ‘70s and ‘80s, the rate of infant deaths per 1,000 live births was 1.5; it’s now 0.5. Parents’ guidelines Revised American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) recommends the following: Always position a baby to sleep on its back including naps. Do not place a baby to sleep on its tummy. Side sleeping is wobbly and should also be avoided. Allowing the baby to roll around on

84 July 2013

its tummy while awake can prevent a flat spot forming on the back of the head due to sleeping in one position. Only put babies to sleep in a crib. Never allow the baby to sleep in bed with other children or adults, and do not put them to sleep on surfaces other than cribs, like a sofa. Let babies sleep in the same room, not the same bed, as parents. If possible, babies’ cribs should be placed in the parents’ bedroom to allow for night-time feeding. Avoid soft bedding materials. Babies should be placed on a firm, snug crib mattress with no comforter. Use a light sheet to cover the baby. Do not use pillows, comforters or quilts. Make sure the room temperature is not too hot. The room temperature should be comfortable for a lightly clothed adult. A baby should not be hot to the touch. Offer the baby a pacifier when going to sleep. Pacifiers at naptime and bedtime can diminish the risk of SIDS. A pacifier might allow the airway to open more or prevent the baby from falling into a deep sleep. A baby that wakes up

more easily may automatically move out of a hazardous position. If the baby is breastfeeding, it is best to wait until one month before offering a pacifier, so that it doesn’t interfere with breastfeeding. Do not force a baby to use a pacifier. Do not use breathing monitors or products marketed as ways to reduce SIDS. In the past, home apnoea monitors were recommended for families with a history of the condition. Research found that they had no effect and the use of home monitors has largely stopped. Recommendation from experts l Keep your baby in a smoke-free environment. l Breast feed your baby, if possible, as it decreases some upper respiratory infections that may influence the development of SIDS. (Refer page 71 of the June 2013 issue of WTM to understand the merits of breastfeeding.) l Never give honey to an infant younger than one year old. Honey in infants cause infant botulism, which may be associated with SIDS. www.womanthismonth.com

Helping Hand by SIMI KAMBOJ

Very often, women caught up in family disputes and domestic violence find it difficult to seek help. Aisha Yateem Family Counselling Centre offers assistance for such cases. Women in Bahrain have made their mark in many spheres, but there are times when they end up vulnerable and helpless, finding themselves to be victims of violence and abuse from their own family. It is for women caught in such circumstances that Aisha Yateem Family Counselling Centre (AYFCC) offers support. “Every month, we receive between six to 10 cases of women being beaten up by their husbands or families. Women were shy in the past, but they have now started to talk about their problems and seek help, which is a good sign,” says Amira Al Oraibi, supervisor of the centre. Since the AYFCC doesn’t have residential facilities, victims of abuse are provided accommodation at the Dar Al Aman and the Dar Al Karama shelters for up to two months. This year, the centre received 28 fresh cases

86 July 2013

until May, whereas it is following up 1,108 cases since its inception in 2007. Family disputes and legal cases involving divorce, custody of children and alimony comprise a majority of cases that the AYFCC handles. Then, there are disputes arising out of drug abuse, unemployment, limited income and interference from in-laws. “Our social workers provide a patient hearing to these women and their case history is recorded in files. There are further meetings with psychologists and lawyers, depending on the sort of problem the victim is facing. We also hold programmes and workshops guiding women to solve their problems, deal with husbands and handle divorce cases,” says Amira. The AYFCC gives all services free of charge and complete secrecy is maintained about the victim and her case. In specific instances

where the victim is unable to bear the legal expenses, the centre contributes the lawyer’s fee. However, the court is considered a last resort, only after the victim and her advisors have ascertained that there is no other alternative for redress. The centre was inaugurated in Hamad Town in 2007 with the building being donated by the Yateem Family. It is run by the Bahrain Young Women’s Association, which has been providing family counselling to women since 1998. Group therapy sessions are often conducted to teach women to relax, think positively, breathe correctly and solve their problems creatively. In the coming years, Amira aims to add a sex clinic with a Ministry of Health-trained gynaecologist, as well as a full-time psychologist on the premises. www.womanthismonth.com

DATE with by JAMES CLAIRE

Destiny

Ramadan, the holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, has a strong affinity towards dates — those sweet, succulent gifts of Mother Nature and the Middle Eastern date palm.

Sticky Toffee Pudding 165g 1tspn 180g 300ml 1tspn 50g 150g 1 1tspn

plain (all-purpose) flour baking powder dates, seeded and chopped boiling water bicarbonate soda unsalted butter, softened caster sugar egg, lightly beaten vanilla essence

Sticky toffee sauce: 100g unsalted butter 125ml heavy cream 170g light brown sugar 250ml heavy cream, whipped

90 July 2013

• Preheat oven to 175 degrees Celsius. • Chop the dates finely and place in a small bowl. • Add boiling water and baking soda; set aside until cold. • When cold drain excess water and mash the dates with a fork. • Butter a square baking tray and line with greaseproof paper. • Sift the flour and baking powder. • With an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. • Add the egg and vanilla, beating until blended. • Gradually add flour mixture. • Add the date mixture to the batter and fold with a rubber spatula until blended. • Pour into prepared tray and bake until firm on top, for about 30 to 40 minutes. Remove from oven to wire rack. • Make the toffee sauce by combining all ingredients in a small heavy-bottomed saucepan. Stirring consistently, heat the liquid until boiling. Boil gently until mixture thickens, for about six to seven minutes. • Cut the cake into serving portions and serve with hot sticky toffee sauce poured over the top and accompany with whipped cream or ice cream. www.womanthismonth.com

SOULFUL Sabbatical by ANKITA MAMGAIN

If fasting is not your way to go, you might still feel inspired by your Muslim friends to undergo a personal and spiritual detoxification during Ramadan. So break away from the familiar and embark on an ‘Eat Pray Love’ quest to rejuvenate and perhaps re-invent yourself as you escape the island’s summer wrath.

Ladakh, India Its altitude, dry, hostile terrain and piercing winds will test your strength and determination all along the way as you journey towards the western edge of the Tibetan plateau. And then – Redemption. Find yourself in Ladakh, nestled in the mighty Himalayas, one of most astonishingly picturesque locations in the world. One of the highest and driest inhabited places, it is defined by rocky, barren cliffs and plateaus, interspersed by clear, indigo lakes. Ladakh is a favourite among adventure sports enthusiasts, landscape photographers and philosophers alike. Offering adrenaline pumping adventures like trekking, mountaineering and white water rafting, it also offers a sense of calm and tranquillity that’s only akin to this region. Most people have claimed their trips to Ladakh to be “a complete break from reality” with dramatic road journeys, serene and surreal lakes, the high mountain passes and the crisp, pure Himalayan air. Must Dos Try taking a road trip from Manali; it would take a few days to reach but with some of the most incredible views of the Himalayas, it’s worth every step of the way. Visit the Pangong Lake, situated at 17,580 feet in the Chang-La pass. Enjoy a cup of tea with the Indian army and watch the colours change in the lake as the day progresses. Spend time in a café in the Leh (capital of Ladakh), soaking in the local culture and exchanging notes with fellow travellers.

Kyoto, Japan Here’s one place that encapsulates the Zen way of life like no other. “On the one-ton temple bell a moon-moth, folded into sleep, sits still,” is how Buson, one of Kyoto’s famous poets, describes the city. If Japan is the huge church bell, Kyoto is the tiny, delicate, tranquil, moth. Having been destroyed and re-built several times in history, this ancient capital of Japan, with its woodsy hilltop Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, has immense cultural wealth and sites of astonishing beauty. The city along with its historic heritage also offers some compelling modernist sites. With its Zen gardens, artistic designs and minimalist architectural marvels, Kyoto is a perfect example of preserving the old while evolving into the new. It harbours a wonderful environment that facilitates modernism along with keeping the meditative spirit of the city alive – perfect for a quite, soulful getaway. Must Dos Take a golden-hour walk along the Kamo riverbank or a self-guided tour of the mile long Philosopher’s Path in the Higashiyama neighbourhood and appreciate the gentleness and gracefulness of this ancient city. Visit the Kinkaku-ji temple and witness its golden splendour. Be on a look out for the several modernist sites in the city, especially the Shigemori Residence’s Zen garden, the eccentric Garden of Fine Arts that houses oversize portraits of Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’ and an underwater version of Claude Monet’s ‘Water Lilies’. Attend the month long Gion Matsuri festival, one of Japan’s oldest and largest events.

Northland Region- New Zealand Here’s a region that tells the story of two coastlines. This far north region of New Zealand still has much of its coastline remain unspoilt. The west is rugged, soulful and simple while the east is more sophisticated and urbane. The two coastlines taper towards the collision of the Tasmanian Sea with the mighty Pacific Ocean at Cape Reinga. The region offers a wealth of heritage and history, natural land and seascapes and a sense of community. The overwhelming beauty and warmth of this subtropical haven will compel you to slow down and perhaps make your workplace problems, past relationships, landlord issues, look rather insignificant in the face of its magnificence. With a myriad of adventure activities and contrasting ways of life, Northland makes you loosen up those tightly held knots that had kept you from enjoying life to the fullest.

www.womanthismonth.com

Must Dos Drive along the Twin Coast Discovery Highway that starts from Auckland and travels north, offering some of the most spectacular sights as you head towards Cape Reinga. Sail the waters of the Bay of Islands, soaking in the sun and the local Maori culture. Discover New Zealand’s staggering underwater beauty along the east coast. Travel on the west coast to the magnificent Tane Mahuta, the tallest kauri tree in an area. Exit the forest and come to the Hokianga Harbour with its huge white sand dunes and quiet beach communities. July 2013 July 2013

Showcase AMERICAN MISSION HOSPITAL

Eating Right With all the delicious meals to feast upon during Ramadan, it is easy to give in to bad eating habits. We sit down with dietician Abigail David to learn more.

Abigail David

THE K HOTEL

Dine Out

This Ramadan, be impressed by more than 100 dishes prepared by the kitchen brigade of a four-star hotel.

Most people break their fast with a few dates in keeping with Prophet Mohammad’s traditions. Today we learn that in fact, starting your Iftar meal with three dates and milk is highly nutritious. “They are dense in calories and adequate in potassium,” explains Abigail David, dietician at American Mission Hospital. The expert goes on to stress the importance of refraining from sugary foods and fizzy drinks during the Holy Month as they can make fasting harder. To control hunger pangs and thirst during the hot summer weather, eating right during Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) is essential. “Remember to take plenty of fluids, especially water, and to consume complex carbohydrates like whole grain muesli, wheat flakes and brown bread. This prolongs your energy levels for the rest of the day,” says the dietician. Consuming meals high in carbs, sugary drinks and desserts can result in what is known as a ‘sugar crash’, where energy levels rise up quickly and go down even quicker. To avoid this, have unrefined carbohydrates that help sustain the body’s energy for a longer span. Lean meat, egg, milk and dairy products like yoghurt not only serve as excellent sources of protein but also help to sustain from sugar cravings. Abigail points out that a high calorie dense meal after Iftar, restraining from regular exercise and not having enough sleep are the most common mistakes people make during Ramadan. “Given this year’s high temperatures, it is even more important for adequate intake of water. Men need at least 13 cups and women around nine. This can be taken between sunset and dawn,” she concludes. Call 17 248-110. According to Volker Mandlowsky, general manager of The K Hotel, the Holy Month is all about celebrating the value of togetherness. Discover the culinary tradition of the Middle East as you join them for Iftar meals at the Klouds Restaurant as well as the Ghabga at Kenza Restaurant. The Arabian buffet in Klouds features dried fruits and nuts to keep it authentic in addition to a range of traditional starters, main courses including ouzi, a local favourite, and Ramadan desserts. An array of international dishes from every corner of the globe has a place in the spread as well. Live cooking stations set up around the venue offer exciting dishes. Priced at BD8++ per person (inclusive of Ramadan beverages), the Iftar buffet commences every evening at sunset and goes on to 8.30pm. For a unique Ghabga gathering, reserve tables for your group at Kenza. The restaurant offers the finest Lebanese fare from sundown until the early hours of the morning along with live entertainment. The K Hotel is pleased to offer a special rate for corporate groups for both the Iftar and Ghabga, where they can meet and socialise with their clients. Another exceptional feature offered at the four-star hotel is its catering service for those of you who plan to organise get-togethers at home or at work. They even help you decorate your venue based on individual needs. Call 17 360-000.

Many people experience dryness, itchiness or even eye aches and assume that their contacts are the culprits. Before you toss your lenses, there are simple daily habits that can easily make you feel more comfortable. If your eyes burn, turn red, swell up, produce discharge or even if you just feel like something isn’t right, the best thing to do is to consult an expert. Discussing your concerns with eye care professionals can help you determine simple changes that could make a world of difference. They can help rule out the possibility that your discomfort indicates a more serious underlying problem too. The rules of using contact lenses include protecting your eyes from UV rays, hydrating them, using lotion to rub and rinse lenses before insertion and replacing lens cases every three months. Giving back This Ramadan, Optica runs a special campaign where old eyewear is renewed and given to those in need. Just drop by your glasses at any of their branches spread across the island and with new prescription lenses they will be gifted to someone else. In addition to the extensive range of eyewear and eye care products, the company offers eye tests, professional contact lenses trials, after sales services and international warranties. The latest addition to its services is online eye test booking and home delivery, where you can have your prescription order delivered right to your doorstep. BAHRAIN SPECIALIST HOSPITAL

Keeping Safe The season of warmer weather is fast setting in. With this comes more opportunities for fun water-related activities, thus more exposure to recreational water illnesses.

Dr Jofrelyn Bistoyong

MOHAMMED FAKHROO

A Clean Finish Do you adhere to a rigorous daily beauty regimen but notice no results? It could be time to switch products.

www.womanthismonth.com

Conditions caused by recreational water activities may often be overlooked, but it’s vital for parents and caregivers to be aware of basic facts. WTM sat down with Dr Jofrelyn Bistoyong, paediatrician at Bahrain Specialist Hospital to learn more about the dangers that summer could bring. Recreational water illnesses (RWI) are caused by germs spread by swallowing, breathing in mists or having contact with contaminated water in swimming pools, hot tubs or any body of water. “The most common of these diseases is diarrhoea brought about by swallowing water that has been contaminated with faeces containing germs. Others are skin infections like ‘hot tub rash’ spread through hot tubs and spas,” Dr Jofrelyn explains. The expert goes on to explain that respiratory illnesses are associated with the use of improperly maintained hot tubs as well, since high water temperatures make it hard to maintain the disinfectant levels needed to kill germs. Although chlorine kills them that cause RWI, the time it takes for each germ varies. Children, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems can suffer from severe illness if infected. “To help prevent RWI, parents need to take a number of measures. One is to make sure your child doesn’t go into a public swimming pool if he/she already has diarrhoea. Other preventive measures are avoiding swallowing pool water, washing hands with soap after using the bathroom and changing diapers,” she says. “During recreational summer activities, give your child a bathroom break every hour. Check their diapers every 30 to 60 minutes. Call 17 812-000. Women can now take their daily skincare routine to the next level with Philips VisaPure — a gentle, easy-to-use skin cleansing device that massages to remove make-up and dirt. Ten times more effective than hand cleansing, the device revitalises the face and décolletage in just one minute and helps unveil a healthy-looking glow. “At Philips, we want to help women look and feel amazing and we know daily cleansing is essential for skincare. This is why our technical experts and researchers have worked with skincare laboratories to really help women turn on their skins’ full potential,” says Ozlem Fidanci, vice president and general manager of Philips Consumer Lifestyle, Middle East, Turkey and Africa. The fully waterproof product is the only cleansing system in the world that features dual motion technology. This creates a comfortable massaging effect that improves micro-circulation beneath the skin’s surface to bring out its natural radiance. WTM speaks

A New Path There comes a point in every woman’s life, no matter how successful or content we feel when we sit back and assess the notion of change. Should or shouldn’t we? There are many factors that can affect our choices for executing change. The right job, the right partner, even the right style of peep-toe Jimmy Choos’, are all subject to change. Let’s deconstruct this notion of change. When first uttered, it can inject an emotion of fear, unfamiliarity and awkwardness. The question to ask here is: Why be fearful of the unknown? To embrace change is the key. For so many of womankind, the aspiration and dream to be greeted by marriage by the age of 25, followed by a renegade of child starship style troopers by 30, has been an embedded fairytale. What a lot of us over time have come to realise is that our once set expectations are not laid out plans, but merely expectations we set for ourselves without accepting the realisation of change! I can remember my friend once saying, “The key to a good life is feeling complete. That doesn’t mean having everything; it’s having everything that’s right for you.” Momentary emotion or not, I couldn’t agree more. Our ambitions and passions in life are

104 July 2013

ever evolving. That’s what makes the journey of life all the more interesting. Looking back on the visionary checklist I once acquired in my mind does make me laugh, only to realise those once set plans were a reflection of what society told me I should be, not what I wanted to be. It was then that I started to respect the value of change, prioritising my ambition to succeed in my job, preparing to withstand the obstacles that faced me in my journey; injecting a positive wave of change in to my life. With this virtual checklist came the desire to be married to my very own fresh prince, what I like to refer to as the romantic quarter of my checklist. Needless to say, time, experience and the acceptance of change played a key part in choosing my life long partner, as well as his excellent knowledge on global culture!

I found myself admitting what was right for me, releasing that fear of the unknown and letting go of my negative choices. Confidence and self belief can be the key to unlocking that door to change. A new, stronger you equates to a better you. Try it; there is no better feeling! Changing our day to day habits, from the food we eat to the music we listen to, can play a crucial role in self belief and change, releasing a positive and vibrant energy that not only makes you smile, but those around you, too. Change without regret. Whatever positive changes we choose to make in life are our own and our biggest critic is ourselves. Let’s not forget that the choices we deem at any given time as being correct are all part of that much bigger puzzle that, with change and experience in hand, will inevitably piece itself perfectly together. www.womanthismonth.com
