EDITOR’S NOTE

t’s a celebratory month! Our magazine is reaching the milestone of 150 uninterrupted issues (which means that we’ve been in the market for about 12 and half years). We thought of various ways of creating a publication that our readers wouldn’t forget. So we’ve combined our July and August issues to deliver a special product. We also decided to pay tribute to our past covers, bringing at least one from each year since our launch in 2003. And finally the best gift (from us to you), 15 pages containing 150 Island Pearls. You’ll find things to do, see, try and buy all hand-picked for you. This is an issue to keep at hand for those days when you’re looking for something to do or a great restaurant to explore and also if you’re looking for a cool place to buy something to add to your wardrobe or home. We’ve also come up with a selection of fitness centres and medical care providers, so your health is covered too! However, even though it’s our birthday, we’ve got much more to offer! Did you know Bahrain has a thriving community of game developers? And that interesting women are part of this group? Check our interview with four of them in our People section. Also, our editorial director Liz O’Reilly spoke to Aliya Ahmad, an artist who specialises in clay and wants to use her talent to help her community. In fashion, denim is a practical fabric to wear for casual days, enjoy Woman this Month’s tips on how to wear it in our Get the Look page. Chuck out your boring jeans (or at least put them in the drawer) and use this versatile fabric in lots of different ways. Our Travel pages are perfect for a family holiday. You will find that some grown-up destinations have hidden (and some not that hidden) places to entertain your little ones. In Incredible Escapes, Ankita Mamgain selected five amusement parks across the world to catch your attention. Happy reading!

Like many of you, I’m also looking forward to a summer break! Even if for just a few days, it is nice to chill and have a change of scenery. So my head is on how to organise my luggage. I think I might need a new set actually and travel kits are always welcome! Here are a few ideas.

Women on Wheels I don’t know why people think that cars are just a man matter. We women are very independent and if we don’t buy a car for ourselves, our opinion is definitely important when choosing a family car. So I was really glad when I opened your magazine and saw an article dedicated to the theme and also the two test-drives. What impressed me more was that both of the ladies tested cars that are usually known for their sportive appeal, which are usually driven by men. Congratulations Woman This Month on its continuous mission on empowering women! Sara.

Letter Local Artist I really liked the interview with the talented Karima Sharabi. Her pieces are delicate and full of meaning which makes us love them even more! I actually really appreciate that Woman This Month always finds interesting local women to interview. I think Bahrain has a lot to offer and many ladies have been doing amazing things and the only way to find out is when you shed some light on them. Thank you! Claire.

Holiday Bonanza I’m planning a trip with my girlfriends during the summer break and we were still not sure about where to go. However, your article about Italy really gave us the incentive to head to pizza land. The different regions seem so beautiful to explore! We all think of only Rome, but when you read about Lombardy, it is impossible not fall in love. I just wonder if it would be a good place for four girls to wander around. Actually what a about doing a piece on girls’ escapes? Joyce.

Rolling Sculptures

Art is not exclusive to gallery walls, it can be applied to lots of different objects and be appreciated in unusual manifestations. This iconic car brand is marking 40 years since it debuted its first automotive artwork.

B

MW Art Cars Collection had its first car painted by Alexander Calder. It was a BMW 3.0 CSL lined up for the Le Mans 24-hour race. Since then, both art and design enthusiasts as well as car and technology fans around the world have been fascinated by the concept. The idea behind BMW Art Cars came from French racing driver and art enthusiast Hervé Poulain. Exactly 40 years ago, the driver asked his good friend Alexander to apply his creative talent to his race car. Together with Jochen Neerparch, the then BMW motorsport director, the very first BMW Art Car Collection vehicle was born. It instantly became a favourite on the race track. New additions to the collection have been made over the years at irregular intervals including works from artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney and Jeff Koons. “The BMW Art Cars provide an exciting landmark at the interface where cars, technology, design, art and motor sport meet,” says Maximiliam Schoberl, senior vice president, corporate and governmental

affairs, BMW Group. The the collection is also known as ‘rolling sculptures’ and the vehicles are unique just like the creators. The anniversary celebrations will happen with exhibitions of some of the Art Cars in Hong Kong, at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, at the BMW Museum in Germany and at the Concorso d’Eleganza at Lake Como in Italy. The last destination had the first four BMW Art Cars by Alexander Calder, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy warhol, plus the M3 GT2 created by Jeff Koons on display. Further presentations are set to follow later in 2015 in New york, Miami and Shanghai.

ETHNIC BEATS

It’s high summer and colourful prints are welcome in any girl’s wardrobe. The tribal trend is a surefire hit for casualwear or pool party.

ESSENTIAL EXTRAS

Accessories are a great way to adopt this eye-catching trend without overdoing it. This Parfois necklace is a stylish option to add some pizzaz to a plain white shirt. The colourful beads and threads paired with silver create a dazzling item that can easily enhance a casual look.

LAYERING UP

Violeta by Mango is a special line from the Spanish brand created to dress women in sizes 40 to 52 (12 to 24 UK). Fashionable items such as this ethnic jacket are a great addition when looking for an eye-catching element to centre your look. This mini-skirt is a cool item for summer parties or when you’re out and about in any hot destination. Great if you’re planning to travel during the holidays. BEADED BEAUTY Tribal prints are widely known and used. However, there is another, often missed, element that suggests this trend, beads. Applied to clothes and bags they give an ethnic flair. This cuff from Accessorize highlights this concept, recreating a traditional pattern using colourful beads. Wear it with plain clothes to maximise the effect.

Style Radar

The 68th Cannes Film Festival in France showcased celebrities wearing beautiful (and sometimes not that glorious) gowns at its many happenings. Woman This Month picked its favourite frocks. Check them out!

RACHEL WEISZ

Wearing a rich emerald Prada gown, the actress attended the premiere of her new movie Youth held during the festival. The sultry keyhole detail and uneven skirt tailoring are the standout elements in this outfit. However the satin fabric may not be the best choice for an asymmetrical cut. She paired the gown with Chaumet jewellery.

EMMA STONE

The 26-year-old actress opted for a black Oscar de La Renta mini dress for the photocall of her latest film Irrational Man directed by Woody Allen. The short voluminous skirt makes her look even cuter, complementing her youth and natural beauty. The delicate lace makes the look a winner.

22 July-August 2015

www.womanthismonth.com

CATE BLANCHETT

The Oscar winner opted for a knee-length black dress from Alexander McQueen to attend the photocall for her newest movie Carol. The transparent gown stands out for its beautiful skirt and the incredible jacket the actress decided to lay casually over her shoulders. The see-through top, though, is an unnecessary extra with so many other eye-catching features.

EMILY BLUNT

A white Peter Piloto number was the actress’ choice to attend the photocall for Sicario during this year’s festival. The long-sleeved dress is part of the brand’s autumn 2015 collection. Colourful embellishments add oomph to this mid-calf dress, making it super stylish. A simple but smart choice for a daytime event. The suede sandals from Jimmy Choo complement the look.

www.womanthismonth.com

NAOMI WATTS

The blonde picked a jawdropping, beaded Elie Saab dress for the opening ceremony. The soft grey gown is a star by itself, however the actress complemented her deep neckline with an eyecatching necklace. This year’s event saw lots of beauties displaying cleavage in showy necklines. Some of them, like Naomi, did it well, but for others it was a simple case of over-exposure.

MELANIE LAURENT

The French actress wore a Zuhair Murad spring 2015 couture piece to show of her beauty at the premiere of Inside Out. The gold beaded gown was paired with a gold leaf belt. This kind of gown is an easy pick to impress without much effort. The glamour is in the dress, so make-up and hair can be kept as simple as possible.

short dress is a great way to give new life to this casual material. Even in a softer version of denim, most dresses you will feature a button-up fastening. The fabric’s lack of elasticity demands a way of making it wearable and this is probably the most comfortable option though some brands opt for zips or string ties. Wedges are the perfect footwear to pair with this look, giving definition and elongating your legs. Sunglasses, a funky handbag and girlish accessories add the final touches. www.womanthismonth.com

VINTAGE REVAMP

id-skirts are a versatile wardrobe staple. They can be worn for formal gatherings or casual moments, depending on the type of material. This draped option is a smart twist on the collegial mini-skirt with the advantage of being appropriate to any age. If you usually avoid this length due to your height, try pairing it with comfy heels. If it’s still not working, look for options that end right above the knee. The very dark dying process gives elegance to the piece. www.womanthismonth.com

SNAZZY SPIN

ungarees (made with fine fabrics) are an alternative to dresses as a gorgeous look for weddings or parties. However, they’re not just a good replacement for your little black dress, but can also be incorporated into your everyday wardrobe. A fitted denim option can look very feminine and, when teamed with dashing accessories, the look’s elevated to fashionista status. Play with neutral shades to keep it classy or explore patterns and colours to make a statement. July-August 2015

t Devji, sunny bright yellow metal is an important element of the fashion scene in 2015. It is a good time to invest and flaunt gold jewellery. Sunshine-coloured gold is also the best complementary accessory for the 70s-inspired looks, so popular this season. The Oscars and Golden Globes were painted with flashes of yellow gold, which means you must stock up! LOVELY LAYERS Layering necklaces and chains and stacking up rings is a trend to look for. YOUTHFUL LOOK

Fighting the ageing process is definitely one of the biggest battles in the aesthetic world today. A variety of products are available, so how should we choose?

A

t Gulf Pharmacy you can find products that offer solutions to skin ageing. The first information to take into account is that the natural components of the skin, collagen and hyaluronic acid, are two key-ingredients to deliver a well-plumped look. The first helps to preserve the skin’s firmness and elasticity, while the second can boost moisture. The topical solutions available can only go so far, so what are the alternatives? The solution may be in cosmeceuticals, a marriage between cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. One the most high-profile cosmeceutical products to hit the market in the last few years is ingestible collagen.

Collagen is one of the main components of skin, together with elastin and hyaluronic acid. As we age, the production of these essential elements decreases. So slathering your skin with topical creams help to protect it is good, but the best way to maintain moisture is to nourish from inside out. Apart from drinking eight to 10 glasses of water per day, you can add to your routine a 50ml bottle of PURE GOLD COLLAGEN®.

hyaluronic acid. The liquid also contains vitamin C to boost the transformation of lysine and proline into collagen. PEOPLE | interview

Game On Inspired by the recent event GCC Game Jam in Bahrain, Woman This Month decided to explore the gaming world interviewing four young women who are passionate about the subject.

B

asically, Game Jam is a competition that teams up two to four developers and designers who must use their computers, software, creativity and skills to develop a game concept. However it is not that simple (as if it could be simple). The teams are given a theme and they have 48 to 72 non-stop hours to create their game. It must include a story line, graphics and the gameplay. Bahrain Polytechnic, in partnership with Red Stallion Interactive, Get Games Middle East, InfiniteWare and Bahrain Game Developers hosted the recent GCC Game Jam. To find out more about the gaming setup in Bahrain we spoke to Bashayer Al-Mahdi, Nasra Buashwan, Saba Saleem and Kristel Yap who all participated in the event. Woman This Month: Do you study or work? Bashayer Al-Mahdi (BA): I have recently finished my MA in illustration & animation at Coventry University, UK. I am on a job hunt at the moment and meanwhile doing some freelance work. Nasra Buashwan (NB): I am a last year student at Bahrain Polytechnic in the ICT department for my programming major. Currently, I’m developing an Android mobile game for my graduation project at Kooheji Systems Company. Saba Saleem (SS): I work as the general manager at DreamBody Centre. Kristel Yap (KY): I work with Saba at the DreamBody Centre as a franchise manager. WTM: What exactly do you do in this gamer’s world? BA: Before the Game Jam I was just an illustrator who was interested to see my artwork in an interactive game. However, after this experience, the amount of people I met and things I’ve learnt, I’ve started to seriously consider getting more into the game industry. SS: I am, for now, the main programmer in my team. I am new to coding and learning gml, which is the programming language of a gamemaking software called GameMaker.

36 July-August 2015

WTM: Is it a hobby or do you want to follow it as a career? NB: It used to be a hobby, however now that I’m getting really good at it, I would love to transform it into a career. KY: Right now it's going to be both. I love playing video games, and my friends and I will continue to develop the game we made in the GCC Game Jam. WTM: How did you get driven to games? NB: It all started with my love for programming. When I started my mobile game development class in Bahrain Polytechnic, I loved it more. Even errors are fun and funny. SS: I got my first game console as a gift from my maternal uncle. I remember playing games like Super Mario, 90 Tank and others and just fell in love with gaming. But it was only after watching a documentary called Indie Game: The Movie that I discovered that I wanted to create them. After that I got myself an Alienware laptop and started creating my own game using GameMaker.

From left: Nasra, Saba, Kristel and Bashayer.

WTM: What’s the training process, courses or necessary specialisations to create a game? Have you had any training in the area? SS: The thing you need the most is to love games and gaming. Next, you need creativity and, as I recently learned, you also need the skill of keeping things simple, which is not as easy as it may sound. I did not get any training in any field related to gaming. I taught myself how to use GameMaker with the help of YouTube videos and tutorials available online. As they say: “where there is a will, there is a way.” NB: I think the only thing needed is to love to create games, and you can find all that you need online. It is important to keep practising and training yourself. Especially if you are creating a game alone, it is easy to lose track of the development. www.womanthismonth.com

This page and opposite: game developme nt by Kristel and Saba.

WTM: How does it feel to be a woman in the gaming environment? NB: I feel very comfortable in this area. We all work together and what matters is your skill not your gender. KY: I feel very proud! I can show that women can do anything! BA: Happy! I am simply happy to be working with three other guys and show them that I can work as hard as them. SS: Representing all women in gaming is a huge responsibility, but that is not my main role. I am happy with just representing myself. I don’t think I am a representation of any general group whether it is gender, nationality or other. I am me. Just me. WTM: Do you think there are opportunities for gamers in Bahrain? BA: There are opportunities but not a lot of them in my opinion. We developers need to create more games and participate in more jams and other events to showcase ourselves. NB: Yes, especially in the mobile games field. A lot of solo game developers have created their own games and published them without the support of a company or anything else. WTM: What is the importance of the GCC Game Jam in Bahrain? SS: It sets Bahrain as the hub for games and game developers in the region. I think next year the event will be even bigger. The

www.womanthismonth.com

game we created has great potential and we are planning to continue working on it. This would not have happened without this Jam. KY: The event supports the huge potential and talented people of the region. Winning third place in this year's Game Jam, without having proper training or taking courses in game making, shows that I can do anything. Last year when my friends and I joined the Bahrain Game Jam, we were clueless, but from there we learned a lot and made sure to be prepared for this year's event. WTM: What are your future expectations? BA: I want to see more Bahraini programmers, animators, writers and musicians attending game development events and realising how helpful their valuable skills can be in game making. NB: That the Gulf will have an expressive representation in game development. I think many small game companies will rise. I know this because I am considering right now to create my own small company when I have the needed skills and knowledge. WTM: Any advice to girls trying to get into this area? BA: If any girl wishes to be a game developer, she should never hesitate to join Bahrain Game

Developers community (a group of professional video game developers based in Bahrain focused on learning and networking, find them on Facebook). Nobody has to be a genius to start making games! And we should all remember that it is fine to make mistakes, that is how we learn. KY: My advice is to do what you love to do. Be confident, don’t allow limitations to discourage your creativity and, most importantly, believe in constant and never-ending improvement. Enjoy the opportunity to learn something new and have fun! g

Art for All Aliya Ahmad teaches pottery and the mum-of-four told WTM she has plans to take her craft into the community.

P

akistani native Aliya first came to Bahrain back in 2001 and, seeking an outlet for her creativity, decided to try a pottery class. From that small beginning a love affair with clay was born and these days her home is filled with lovingly crafted pieces. From Bahrain Aliya moved to Dubai and Canada, following her banker husband’s career. Then last August the couple arrived back on the island and she decided to put her experience to work teaching pottery classes for adults and also for kids, as part of an art initiative at Al Riwaq Art Space. From busts to pots to lamp bases to figurines, Aliya creates unique items which add interest in every nook and corner of her home. With their bright colours and unique glazes, students who visit for her adult classes cannot help but be inspired. She says: “What I do is not exactly classes in any structured way; I just want to show people how to work with clay so that it will come together properly and give them the technical knowledge needed to make beautiful things for themselves.” Currently her students are all women, though she does offer mixed sessions and found several businessmen joined her groups in

38 July-August 2015

From busts to pots to lamp bases to figurines, Aliya creates unique items which add interest in every nook and corner of her home Dubai revelling in the opportunity to loosen their ties, kick back and get their hands dirty. “Everyone starts with the basics of making a coil pot,” she explains. “In this group, one lady made a large lamp base, another a pot based on one I have on display in my home. Everyone came up with their own ideas and went away satisfied with what they’d produced. Surprisingly, there were some quite large pieces, which was nice for me to see.” Not content with sharing her knowledge in classes or sessions, Aliya now has her heart set on establishing a series of art centres to give back to the local community. She says: “I live close to Karranah and, when

we first moved here, I was told to be careful of the local village residents – but I have never had any trouble. I go through the village regularly and the youngsters always smile and wave. “It seems to me that there is a distinct lack of things for young people to do and I would like to address that. At the age of five or six, you can direct children towards anything. If they are directed towards causing trouble, then that’s what they will do. I want to direct them towards art.” Her hope is to seek donated land and portable buildings to set up an art centre where young people can learn not just pottery but a range of other art skills, for free. “If it’s on their doorstep, fun and free, young people will come and the hope is that five or ten years down the line, those children will be making art rather than making trouble.” The plan is still in its infancy and Aliya is currently planning to speak with the local governorate to seek a location for what she hopes could be the first of many such centres around the island. g Find out more about Aliya’s work at www.oarat.com, facebook.com/oarat.ART and Instagram oarat_pottery_ceramics. www.womanthismonth.com

For an island, Bahrain is surprisingly short of beaches but if you really do like to be beside the seaside there are various spots to take a dip. Coral Bay, on the Al Fateh Corniche, has a beach and swimming pool with water sports, Jet Ski and boat hire, spa and restaurant. At Amwaj Islands the new ART Rotana Hotel has a beach with various offers for lunch and pool access and at the other end of the Kingdom, you will find Bahrain Sailing Club where non-members are welcome to use the beach and facilities for just a few dinars. A short boat ride from Sitra Fisherman’s Port takes you to Al Dar Islands where you will also find a beach and watersports. www.coral-bay.net 17 312-700. www.rotana.com/artrotana 16 000-111. Beyond Face Value

A combination of expert hands and beautiful products, resulting in a relaxing and totally indulgent spot of ‘me time’ as you relax at the salon; Ankita Mamgain brings you more on facials.

I

t might be impossible to get the kind of soft, flawless facial skin you see in ad campaigns and magazines, without some skilful airbrushing. However, taking care of your face has never been easier, safer and more fun. Today there are several ways to help improve the look and feel of your skin and increasingly, many adults and even teens are turning to facials. Facial treatments are meant to cleanse, firm, smooth and moisturise the skin. They are not only an excellent way to relax and be pampered, but also a means for making your skin healthier. According to research by the International Spa Association, facials are the third most popular spa treatment, right behind massages and manicures or pedicures in the USD10.9-billion spa industry. You can certainly give your face a massage at home and then relax with a face-pack on, cucumber slices on the eyelids and tranquil tunes playing in the background, but it’s not quite the same as having it done at a spa. The care with which an aesthetician applies

Facial treatments are meant to cleanse, firm, smooth and moisturise the skin. They are not only an excellent way to relax and be pampered, but also as a means for making your skin healthier creams, gels, serums, masks, mists and lotions, leaves you feeling pampered in addition to cleaning and revitalising your skin. TYPES OF FACIALS Some facials claim to do nothing more than give you a relaxing massage; others target specific skin problems, such as acne, dryness

or wrinkles. They can range from being low-tech affairs, using hand-mixed pastes and compounds, to high-tech procedures, involving electrical stimulation to temporarily tighten skin. A basic facial involves cleaning, steaming and finishing off with a nice massage, which can be tailored to specific skin types, for instance hypoallergenic products may be part of the treatment for sensitive skin. If your eyes are looking a little tired, you might want to consider a bio-lift facial. Alpha-hydroxy acid facials claim to help aging skin look more youthful, as do collagen or paraffin facials. If mature skin isn't your problem – and your youthful dermis suffers from acne, you can seek out a specialised treatment to clear up skin or antioxidant and pollutionfighting facials that have special ingredients formulated to combat free radicals which can contaminate and damage your skin If you want a clear mind in addition to a clear face, consider an aromatherapy facial, www.womanthismonth.com

which uses specific essential oils to calm the body and helps you relax. WHY GO FOR IT? You really don’t need a specific reason to head to the spa, but beyond the incredible ‘before and after’ pictures in beauty brochures, there are many pluses to going for a facial. Extraction for clear pores: How many times have you caught yourself squeezing out blackheads, pores and pimples? A practice that is responsible for facial scarring, broken capillaries and acne flare-ups. With a facial treatment you leave this job to the experts who use the right tools and techniques so your skin breathes better, looks healthier and has fewer breakouts. Healthy complexion: You might have a good skin care routine but masks and peels go a step further in rejuvenating the dermis and leaving it fresh and supple. Depending on your skin’s needs, the mask’s purpose may be to calm, hydrate or decongest the skin. Lymphatic drainage: Most facials include a certain amount of face, décolletage and scalp massage, which not only induces deep relaxation but also promotes lymphatic drainage. This means it gets rid of toxins, reduces fluid retention and promotes Overlooking the azure waters of the Manama Bay, Coral Spa is a serene spot that offers a number of treatments ranging from massages and Moroccan baths to body firming and sculpting. Some of the most popular treatments are the Guinot facials. I went there to try out the skin care brand’s star offering, the Hydradermie Double Ionisation Facial. My aesthetician, Angie, escorted me to the treatment room and told me briefly about the products and process. She then examined my skin carefully for its (many) problem areas – the main ones being acne scars and some fresh pimples that I woke up to that day. After removing my make-up, she applied a soothing serum

This was followed by oxygenation, in which the skin was exposed to high frequency currents, which helps the product penetrate deeper into the dermis. Angie followed by cleaning my clogged pores, removing any blockages and a relaxing massage. After applying a nourishing face mask,

and other facial scarring. Expert advice: You can do your own research about your skin type and products to use but an aesthetician accesses your skin under intense light, using a super magnifier, to identify your exact problems. This way you get a personalised treatment that is not just made for four to five skin types, as is the case of most over-the-counter brands.

she left me to completely zone out at this point. The final steps

included applying a moisturiser. The Hydradermie facial is Guinot’s signature and is known for its radiance-boosting wonders. My skin was noticeably 'fresher' looking for several days afterwards. RAMADAN BEAUTY TIPS

During the Holy Month, the change in the diet may affect your skin and hair leaving it dry and dull. This salon offers some valuable tips to add to your beauty routine.

R

amadan this year is happening during a hot month, when the weather can take a toll on your skin and your hair can look brittle if you don’t manage to keep your lifestyle balanced. Take good care of your beauty this Ramadan with these great tips from Joz Salon & Spa: - Drink lots of water. While not fasting, make sure you get yourself hydrated. - Shower in warm water. The hot water dries your skin faster so avoid long hot baths. - Drink green tea for Suhoor. This helps to hydrate your skin and gives you fresher breath the next day. - Avoid fatty food or soda drinks. Iftar is your first meal of the day, so make sure it is a healthy one. Opt for grilled meats and lots of salad to replace the lost nutrients.

70 July-August 2015

- Have a cup of yogurt daily. Yogurt makes you feel full longer and hydrates your skin. - Use potato for dark circles. During this period it is normal to stay up late, so dark circles may start showing under your eyes. Apply round slices of potato for 10-15 minutes daily to soothe their appearance. - Limit caffeine intake. Whether it is soda, coffee or tea, they all contain caffeine and this absorbs minerals and liquids from your body, which is not good. - Watch your sugar intake. You may be tempted to eat a lot of sweets

-

-

-

-

and desserts during this month, however, make sure you control the consumption. Sugar may cause acne. Indulge with nuts. Some nuts, especially almonds, are rich in fibres and fatty acids which are really good to boost your skin’s appearance. Hair masks. Hydrate and nourish your hair with different types of home treatments. Check the ones available at Label.m for great results. Choose the right brush. For long hair, always opt for a hair brush made with natural hair. If you have short tresses, pick one made of nylon. Watch your diet. Eat as many vegetables and fruits as possible combined with milk and yogurt. Remember to drink at least one cup of milk or yogurt per day. DEEP CLEANSING

With the stresses of everyday life, sometimes it’s good to take a break and enjoy a spa treatment that will boost your energy and rejuvenate your skin. This salon can help you with this mission!

J

oz Salon & Spa offers the traditional Moroccan Hammam steam bath treatment. The word hammam means spreader of warmth or bathroom. It refers to the conventional bathhouse where you can have a steam treatment and full-body exfoliation in the authentic Moroccan style. Traditionally, some Moroccans visit the public baths on a weekly basis and the baths are separate for men and women. The ritual of attending the bath house dates back to the Ottoman and Roman empires. Today, the treatment is available from east to west and is especially popular in the Middle East where it is felt essential for brides to have this kind of pre-wedding treat to ensure the softness and cleanliness of their whole body. A Moroccan bath is also a place for social gathering. According to Joz Salon & Spa’s hammam specialist: “Non-Moroccan people treat a trip to the hammam like a day at the spa, unlike Moroccans who see this as an opportunity to meet their neighbours and friends. Especially women, who like to hang out at the steam room to get up to date on the latest gossip and drink the famous Moroccan tea.”

72 July-August 2015

This tradition has been passed down from generation to generation. The Joz Salon expert tells her own story: “I have a long line of family members who worked as bathers. My great grandmother, grandmother and mother used to do it for a living and I inherited it from them.” Joz Salon & Spa is very careful with its technique, the beauty retreat understands that it has to be done in a specific way to keep the tradition alive. The hammam is a 50 degrees Celsius steam bath with different temperatures that increase from one room to another. First comes the warm room where your body adapts to the heat. Then the bather takes the customer to the hammam where she washes the body to get rid of the basic dirt on the skin and hair. The next step is to go to the hot room. In this area the pores open wide and let the body sweat releasing all the dirt hidden in the pores, which is very good for the skin. Also, the moist heat that wraps the body stimulates circulation. The time spent in this room depends on each customer’s tolerance for the heat. The customer then heads back to the warm room for another wash, this time using

a natural Moroccan black soap made with olive oil. This is considered the best part of the treatment. Here, the bather uses a Kessa black glove (crafted goat hair made into a loofa) and rubs the skin to remove the soap and dead skin, exfoliating it to make it softer. The expert says: “The bather might be harsh when rubbing to remove all the impurities and it is normal that the skin becomes red.” After the bath, the client steps into the cold room. Many Moroccan hammams have shared showers that help to rinse and remove the last remaining dirt and sweat off the body. There are also benches in this room where customers relax and let their bodies get used to normal temperatures again. The last room is the most pampering one. Here, the client receives a deep tissue aroma massage using organic argan oil. The session is finalised with a cup of green tea with mint. The multi-step cleansing Moroccan hammam ritual can be completed in 60 minutes and will rejuvenate the skin. Don’t miss any more time and book your appointment! GET A FLAT TUM

When exercise and diet fail, there’s still a way to shift that stubborn belly fat. Dr Salil Bharadwaj, consultant plastic surgeon explains.

T

Dr Salil Bharadwaj

ummy tuck surgery or abdominoplasty is the surgical removal of loose, excess skin and fat from the abdomen. Additionally, the abdominal muscles, from the ribs to the pubic bone and the inner girdle of connective tissue, can be tightened to deliver a toned, sculpted appearance. The best candidates for abdominoplasty are men or women who are in relatively good shape but are bothered by a large fat deposit or loose abdominal skin that won’t respond to diet or exercise. This surgery is particularly helpful to women who, through multiple pregnancies, have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point where they can return to normal. Loss of skin elasticity in older patients, which frequently occurs with slight obesity, can also be corrected. Patients who intend to lose a lot of

weight should postpone the surgery. Also, women who plan future pregnancies should wait. Some stretch marks can be simply removed with a tummy tuck, if they are found in the lower abdomen below the belly button. A horizontal incision is made between the pubic hairline and navel in such a way as to be concealed under the bikini line. Weakened or separated abdominals are corrected and sutured together through the incision. Extraneous fat, tissue and skin are removed. Full recovery can take one to two weeks and medicine is administered to reduce swelling and pain. A tummy tuck will result in a flatter, firmer abdomen that is more proportional to your body. procedures based on specific and careful selection criteria for the cases.” The hospital has the latest hi-tech laser machine which is used for non invasive periodontal surgery, treating moderate to advanced gum disease, which promotes an excellent healing process of the infected and

inflamed tissue, in turn reducing the need for gum surgery. “The minimally invasive nature of our laser does even more,” says Dr Al Dalal. “Now we can easily perform osseous crown lengthening surgery for short crowns prior to covering them with prosthesis. It is also used for the treatment of inflamed

tissues around implants; it assists in performing an externally beveled gingivectomy (surgical removal of excess gum tissue) and provides excellent results in cosmetic surgery. “Moreover, it is extremely successful in healing mouth ulcers and performing soft tissue surgeries and removal of all kinds of mouth tumours. Not to forget the cosmetic benefits by removing the melanin pigmentation (dark brown discoloration of the gum) and treating your gummy smile in one session.” Call 17 246-500, 17 240-400, 17 240-413 or 17 240-401 for appointments. www.womanthismonth.com

THE NO-CUT TUMMY TUCK When I was offered the chance to try this company’s 3D tummy tuck, I was expecting smoke and mirrors. I was happy to be proved wrong, writes Liz O'Reilly.

W

ith obesity an ever-growing problem, there are an awful lot of women (and a fair few men) who’ve considered a tummy tuck at one time or another. But, for many, the idea of painful, invasive surgery, general anaesthetic and several weeks of downtime, are enough to make them think again. So, if VLCC can really offer the same results without the aggravation and pain, and at a fraction of the cost, this could just be the holy grail of weight loss. On arrival at the centre in Isa Town, I was questioned about my lifestyle and medical history before being weighed and measured using a special machine, which calculates the body’s fat, water and muscle composition. Not surprisingly, it showed I had a fair bit of chub to lose around my tummy area, carrying weight in the mid-section increases the risk of diabetes and heart disease, so I was eager to get started. Next, it was on to the treatment room where I laid on a heated bed and therapist Sara wrapped my legs in heated covers, to increase circulation. She then set about my stomach area with her G4 vibration/massage machine. This part of the treatment feels a

76 July-August 2015

bit like a high-speed, very vigorous massage and, again, it’s about breaking down fat and getting the circulation going. After around 15 minutes, she turned the machine off, extended the heated wraps almost to my chest and left me to warm through. I must admit, this actually felt pretty unpleasant, as it’s very hot. But, who was I to stand (or rather lie) in the way of a flat tum? Moving swiftly on, after about 20 minutes of gently heating, we transferred to another room where my midsection was massaged with an anti-cellulite oil combined with the an ampule of BelleWave 3D Body Contour Power Dose containing Euglena Gracilis extract, Glaucium Flavum extract and plant caffeine. This is apparently where the magic happens. The 20-minute massage was firm but not uncomfortable and was followed by another 15 minutes of ultrasound to help to break down the fat which is then naturally

removed by the body. At last it was time for the moment of truth. I’d been weighed and comprehensively measured before the treatment began and, being a life-long devotee of crash diets interspersed with the latest punishing gym ‘miracle’ workouts, I couldn’t believe anything so painless could possibly have results. But the evidence of the measuring tape before my own eyes showed a reduction of 3cm on my upper stomach and a, very respectable, 2cm off one thigh. I’d also lost 400 grams, almost half a kilo! What’s not to like about weight and centimetre loss that simply involves lying down and letting someone else do all the work? Thank you VLCC, I shall be back. The 3D Tummy Tuck treatment is available at VLCC, Isa Town & Zinj. A five-week course is recommended to feel the full effects. GLOBAL POSITIONING In a world where we are driven by the new technologies created every day, there’s nothing more valuable than a watch that we can take anywhere and know it will always point us in the right direction.

rought to Bahrain by Ambassador Stores, the authorised dealer of SEIKO in the Kingdom, the world’s first GPS Solar watch, SEIKO Astron, is a unique timepiece. It relies on pure technology and will definitely enchant watch aficionados. The state-of-the-art masterpiece divides the globe into 100,000 squares covering all the 39 different time zones across the world. SEIKO has created a low energy-consuming GPS receiver that can accurately update the time up to 1/100 of a second in any corner of the world at the press of a button. Once a day (or on demand), Seiko Astron automatically receives the time signal by connecting to four or more of the GPS satellites that orbit

Earth. This allows the watch to pinpoint the time zone it’s in. The timepiece also runs entirely off solar power or any form of ambient light, turning it into a no-maintenance watch. All this technology is packed in a small device with a 47-mm diameter case and just 135 grams weight. Another special element of the Astron is Seiko’s new anti-reflective coating applied on both the front and back of the glass. Curb Appeal Not matter how special the interiors of a house are, it’s the façade that determines how welcoming your home appears. Ankita Mamgain helps you choose the right options for beautiful and long lasting exteriors.

C

an anyone dispute the importance of first impressions? I personally try not to judge a book by its cover but would be lying if I said it held no significance at all. The same holds true for your home. The exterior often reflects the overall style of the house and the family that lives there, so it sets the pace for the rest of your space. Whether you have stone, wood, brick, steel or vinyl siding; make sure your materials, paint colours and overall design represent what you like and who you are. CHOOSING SIDES The right kind of siding effectively protects your home exterior and contributes a great deal to ‘curb appeal’. The deciding factors here are budget, the climate you live in and the weather conditions. On the island, it’s usually not quite so forgiving, so ideally you want something that’ll endure extreme heat, dust storms and varying levels of humidity. Siding costs also vary by material and installation factors. An expensive siding is useless if it can’t

80 July-August 2015

Vinyl: This is one of the least expensive options and is a popular type for warm, humid climates. It doesn’t flake or rot and stands up to heat and wind. Another plus is the variety of colours it comes in and it can even resemble wood grain or vintage siding. However, when the weather gets windy and cold it might require some maintenance.

ENGINEERED WOOD Wooden exteriors have been around for centuries and look great. However they require frequent maintenance and protection from moth infestation. Engineered wood can better handle humid, hot climates than natural wood as it’s treated to withstand the elements and offers a number of additional benefits. It is easy to install, is treated with fungus repellents and insecticides and can survive moisture, mildew, termites, the sun, storms and chemicals.

Stone and Brick: Although on the pricier side, now homeowners can invest in their look-alike versions at a much lower cost. Stone veneer is made of one layer of masonry tied to the foundation. These options are strong, and they perform well in hot weather because they cool down faster than other types of siding. However, they are also prone to chipping and wearing in rough weather, but with the right care, they will last for many years.

Fibre Cement: Also known as hardie board siding, it is composed of a mix of wood fibres, cement and sand. It is extremely durable, as well as resistant to heat, termites and rotting. Fibre cement is a good choice for homeowners who live on the coast near the sea because it’s particularly resistant to salt air, humidity and windy conditions. It is offered in a wide variety of colours and styles and requires minimal maintenance.

hold up to the elements and requires constant repairs. Here are some of the most common types of home siding that can work for Bahrain:

www.womanthismonth.com

COLOUR SCHEME In addition to its protective value, the home exterior paint or siding can be aesthetically transforming. Here are a few ideas to help in choosing the best colours for the outdoors. The roof and driveway play a pivotal role in determining your choices and if the façade is primarily stone, using similar hue adds visual harmony. If the fixed colours are intense, like a terracotta-tile roof, a neutral palette for the walls brings balance. The landscaping is another important factor so select colours that fit in with the surrounding palette. If you have spring blooming trees or a sea of green foundation plantings, choose something that will complement them. Remember to stay compatible with the other houses in the neighbourhood. You don't have to imitate the palette or application exactly, but can put your own individual spin on similar colour combinations. www.womanthismonth.com

ASK THE EXPERTS Paint is an extremely popular and cost-effective option but making the right selection for the job is never easy. Recent breakthroughs in paint technology have yielded a new generation of ecofriendly exterior paints and stains. According to R Raghupati, senior manager, sales and marketing at Berger Paints Bahrain, home owners are primarily looking for protection against undulations, algae, heat, fading, cracks, dust, dampness and corrosion. “Our Berger Weathercoat range is a great choice as it offers complete exterior protection,” he says. “This formula is heat resistant, has crack-bridging properties, doesn’t fade easily, is dirt repellent and has anticarbonisation properties which safeguard the walls against corrosion.” This particular line has been exclusively formulated by Berger Paints for the Middle Eastern climate. The brand’s other products, which also offer a great finish and protection from the elements, are Tuff and Select.

showcase CITY CENTRE BAHRAIN

ALL-IN-ONE DESTINATION

In a hot country like Bahrain, it’s great to find a place where you can get all you need under one roof. This shopping complex does its best every day to improve its guests’ experiences.

C

ity Centre Bahrain, situated in the heart of the city, is owned and managed by Majid Al Futtaim, a shopping mall, retail and leisure pioneer across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The complex is well-known amongst Bahrain’s residents and visitors and a favourite choice when thinking of shopping or if you want to enjoy a good range of restaurants and entertainment. The destination attracts more than 13.5 million visitors annually and is spread across more than 158,000sq/m of retail space. An international selection of more than 340 brands and 60 dining outlets makes the mall one of the Kingdom’s attractions. Looking for family leisure? At City Centre Bahrain you will find the Middle East’s first and largest indoor/outdoor waterpark, Wahooo! If you want to enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbuster, there’s also a 20-screen Cineco Cinema. And, if kids’ entertainment is your goal, visit Magic Planet with its arcade games and more on the second floor. However, apart from all the leisure and exciting shopping experience, the commercial complex offers much more. Campaigns specially designed to support its community are created and implemented throughout the year. Always bringing interesting subjects and specialised people to run them, the complex does its

84 July-August 2015

share for the country. “As part of our vision to create great moments for everyone, every day, we hope to serve our communities by going even further and beyond the shopping experience,” affirms Duaij Khalifa Al Rumaihi, senior mall manager for City Centre Bahrain. The recent “Feel the Beat” campaign held in partnership with King Hamad University Hospital, had the goal of raising awareness on women’s cardiovascular health in the Kingdom. The action saw medical professionals administrating a series of free preventative tests including measurement of blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index (BMI). Additionally, women could learn about CPR procedures with live educational demonstrations. Cardiovascular disease has emerged as the

leading cause of death in most countries in the Middle East. It causes 45 per cent of early deaths in the Gulf region and women are not spared, despite the common belief that the condition mainly affects men. Also, in line with its concern for its customers, the shopping complex has recently launched a new car park guidance system which enables shoppers to identify free parking spaces and easily locate their vehicles. The first of its kind in Bahrain, the LED lighting system on the ceiling of the car park lanes allows customers to spot available parking spaces with a green light indicating a vacant space, blue showing an available space for the disabled and red meaning space occupied. Additionally, kiosks have been added at the mall gates which help customers find their vehicles at the end of their visit. To locate your car, you just have to enter your plate number on the touchscreen and click find. “Customer feedback has demonstrated that the parking experience has a direct influence on the overall quality of a shopping mall trip. City Centre Bahrain is piloting new technologies which will significantly improve the convenience and accessibility of our malls,’ says Duaij. Fun Holiday Are you staying on the island over the summer break? Ghada Salem has some ideas for educational science projects to entertain your kids.

S

pending the summer holiday in Bahrain and run out of activities to do with your kids? Here are some fun science experiments you can conduct with them at home, they are easy to do and will teach your little ones lots about science and nature. RAINBOW IN A GLASS

You will need: • Four different colours of food colouring (e.g. red, yellow, green and blue) • Five tall glasses or clear plastic cups • ¾ cup (180 g) of granulated sugar • A tablespoon for measuring • 240 ml water In the first glass, add one tablespoon (15g) of sugar. In the second glass, add two tablespoons of sugar, three in the third glass and four in the last glass. Then add three tablespoons (45 ml) of water to each glass and stir until the sugar is dissolved. If the sugar in any of the glasses will not dissolve, add one more tablespoon (15ml) of water to all the glasses and stir again. When the sugar is completely dissolved, add two or three drops of red food colouring to the first glass, yellow to the second, green to the third and blue to the last glass. In the remaining glass you will create your rainbow. Fill the glass about a quarter of the way with the blue sugar solution. Next, carefully add the green solution to the glass. Do this by putting a spoon in the glass, just above the level of the blue solution. Slowly pour the green solution into the spoon, raising the spoon to keep it just above the level of the liquid, until the glass is half full. Add the yellow solution and then the red one in the same manner. The amount of sugar dissolved in a liquid affects its density. The blue solution has the most sugar dissolved in it and is therefore the densest. The other solutions are less dense than the blue solution, so they float on top of it. If done carefully enough, the colours should stay relatively separate from each other.

90 July-August 2015

STRING TELEPHONE

You will need: • 2 strong paper cups • 3 metres of string • Scissors • Sharp pencil • A friend! Use a sharp pencil to make holes in the bottom of the cups. Push the string through each hole. Tie a knot in each end of the string inside the cups. The knots must be bigger than the holes. Ask a friend or brother/sister to take one cup and move far enough away to make the string tight. One child should speak into a cup while the other holds their cup to their ear. Now they can phone each other!

BOUNCY EGG Children love to learn and experiment with new things. Try this bouncing egg science experiment that is fun to do and will teach kids about osmosis.

You will need: • Egg • Plastic cup • Vinegar • Plastic spoon • Paper towel Place an egg in a plastic cup and completely cover with vinegar. Then put the cup somewhere where it doesn't have to be moved for four days. The vinegar will dissolve the eggshell. Use a plastic spoon to remove the egg from the cup. Lay it down on a paper towel to let it dry. Take the egg outdoors and from a low height gently bounce it.

Give Health a Hand Research shows that 95 per cent of people claim to practice proper hand hygiene. Yet studies reveal that only 67 per cent practice any sort of hand hygiene at all! Dr Jinan Harith Darwish tells us more about

H

and washing has been a common practice since the Roman times. Yet, throughout history, its benefits for the control of infection have been, and still remain, frequently overlooked. In 1847, a Hungarian obstetrician by the name of Ignaz P Semmelweis illustrated that hand washing and cleanliness decreased infections in newborns. Dr Semmelweis attempted to promote hand washing and cleanliness among his colleagues, who were so offended that they committed him to an insane asylum! That was 168 years ago and times have changed. Semmelweis’ claims have been proven true and it is now a well-known certainty that indeed, hand washing greatly reduces the spread of disease and its importance is preached to school children everywhere. Hand washing with soap is a life-saving intervention within the technological and financial reach of all countries and communities. Research shows that a USD3.35 investment in hand washing brings the same health benefits as an USD11 investment in latrine construction, a USD200 investment in household water supply and an investment of thousands of dollars in immunisation. Around 80 per cent of communicable diseases are transferred by touch. Chiefly the touching of food or one’s own mouth, eyes and nose. It is not simply person-to-person contact. Most missed areas during hand washing

96 July-August 2015

include thumbs, fingertips, and the top of the hand where bacteria can be harboured after ineffective hand washing and spread from child to child. Proper hand washing is extremely important for infants and toddlers. Research has shown that infants are especially vulnerable to infectious disease between six and nine months of age, when the protection of being in-utero wears off. From that point, it takes until children are around two years before their immune systems are fully functioning.

For pre-schoolers, studies have shown that deficiencies in hand washing have contributed to many outbreaks of diarrhoea among children and caregivers in child care centres. In centres that have implemented a handwashing training programme, the incidence of diarrhoeal illness has decreased by 50 per cent. Another study found that hand washing helped to reduce colds when frequent and proper practices were incorporated into a child care centre's curriculum. Finally, when hand washing is done correctly by children and adults there can be a 17 per cent reduction in respiratory infections for young children. This translates to preventing more than 100,000 colds per year. In a study in Detroit, USA, children showed that those who washed their hands had 24 per cent fewer sick days due to respiratory illness and 51 per cent fewer sick days due to upset stomach. www.womanthismonth.com

VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY

Living in a hot climate can make you shy away from the sun but it is the best source of Vitamin D and its deficiency can lead to various health problems.

V

itamin D is essential for strong bones and muscles in addition to general health and well being. “The ultraviolet radiation from the sun produces vitamin D in the body and is the Dr Hecham Harb best natural source for it,” says Dr Hecham Harb, internal medicine and endocrinology consultant at Royal Bahrain Hospital. Some people are more prone to suffer from vitamin D deficiency than others. For example: people with naturally dark skin; people with little or no sun exposure due to lifestyle such as those with restricted movement due to ageing, disabilities, health issues or even due to their occupation; people who cover themselves for

Vitamin D levels can be increased through supplements and other treatments.

religious or cultural reasons; those who avoid sun exposure for cosmetic or health reasons (such as having a high risk of skin cancer) and long-term hospitalised patients. Additionally, people with medical conditions or taking medications affecting vitamin D metabolism can also become deficient in it as well as nursing babies whose mothers have low

vitamin D or who experienced a deficiency during pregnancy. “Vitamin D deficiency may not result in any obvious symptoms but, if left untreated, it can increase the risk of muscle aches (general pains) and fragile bones,” explains Dr Harb. “Moreover, vitamin D deficiency is also linked to an increased risk of diabetes, heart diseases, mental health conditions, altered immunity and various types of cancers. Given the risks, vitamin D levels cannot be left unmonitored.” Bahrain has a high incidence of vitamin D deficiencies but, if detected early, vitamin D levels can be increased through supplements and other treatments. It is a simple blood test, available at Royal Bahrain Hospital, at a special price of BD18. Call 17 246-800 for appointments and more information.

Don Your Supercape Superfoods come and superfoods go, as short-lived fads of health freaks around the world. But there are some that have been around for ages, and are here to stay. Behnaz Sanjana finds out more.

W

e are wonder-women in our homes, offices and businesses; charging into action the minute our feet touch the ground each morning, only exhaling when we hit the sack at night. But hey! Even superwomen need a daily shot of power to stay well. Our experts put the facts before you. Pick your favourites. GREEN GOLD Hala Al Khaldi, nutritionist and MD of Diet Delight, tells us the bright green blades of wheatgrass are an effective healer because they contain all minerals known to man, and vitamins A, B-complex, C, E, and K. Wheatgrass is extremely rich in protein and contains 17 amino acids - the building blocks of protein. Wheatgrass contains up to 70 per cent chlorophyll, which works pure magic in the human body. This ‘liquid sunshine’ is antibacterial and can be used both internally and externally as a natural healer. According to Hala, factors like the quality, convenience of use and cost should be considered before choosing between fresh and powdered wheatgrass. “Fresh wheatgrass is unprocessed so it will always be more nutritious than wheatgrass powder, no matter

98 July-August 2015

how much care is taken in drying or grinding to form the powder,” says Hala. She also cautions against mistaking wheatgrass juice with frozen wheatgrass juice or juice in bottles with added preservative. “The processing of wheatgrass to make it last for weeks defeats the very purpose of taking wheatgrass as a raw food supplement,” she says. Powdered wheatgrass shines bright for its fibre content, which wheatgrass juice is devoid of. Fibre is an aid for digestion, preventing heart disease, diabetes and weight gain. But your powder must come from organically grown wheatgrass made by a trusted brand. Wheatgrass has been said to not only reduce the frequency of common colds and increase the speed of recovery from colds, but also prevent and fight cancer, by way of boosting the immune system. “Additionally, the molecular structure of chlorophyll in wheatgrass is similar to that of haemoglobin. Haemoglobin (in blood) transports oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Wheatgrass will help build and renew blood cells in the body and increase the oxygen available to fight cancer cells,” says Hala.

THE SUNSHINE SPICE Turmeric, with its hard-to-miss deep yellow colour, is found in homes around the world, including the Middle East, as a spice cabinet staple. Du’a Al-Khalily, clinical nutritionist at www.womanthismonth.com

Antioxidants in turmeric effectively help to reduce insulin resistance which is associated with diabetes and also reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood the Home Nutrition Treatment Centre says: “Turmeric, with its unique smell and flavour, contains many essential nutrients such as protein, dietary fibre, niacin, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K and many minerals such as sodium, potassium, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium and zinc. Thus, it is often used to treat many health problems and diseases.” Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory, especially good for arthritis because it contains a large group of antioxidant and anti-viral properties. It is also a natural antiseptic and anti-bacterial, useful in cleansing wounds and burns and to accelerate their healing, she informs us. Turmeric is beneficial to liver health and helps in the removal of toxins from the body. It also helps to reduce weight and burn fat. How? “The elements present in turmeric help stimulate the gall bladder to increase the flow and secretion of bile in the body, which has the biggest role in one’s metabolism. This in turn improves the digestion process and reduces the symptoms of bloating and gas,” answers Du’a. Many studies have shown that antioxidants in turmeric effectively help to reduce insulin resistance which is associated with diabetes and also reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood. Turmeric is known to be great for skin health, due to its vitamin E content. Research has shown that ‘curcumin’, which is the active ingredient in turmeric, can stimulate body cells to carry out the process that causes the self-destruction of cancer cells and prevents more from growing. Remember to flavour www.womanthismonth.com

your Indian curries and Arabic kebabs with turmeric; your body will thank you for it. POWER PUNCH Enjoyed by the South Americans for centuries, chia seeds have recently made headlines for their fantastic nutritional profile - providing a healthy form of energy, fibre, omega 3, amino acids and many essential vitamins and minerals. Chia may help to reduce cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure, says clinical dietician Rheam Nasr from the Gulf Diabetes Specialist Centre. These fun- to- eat seeds are loaded with soluble fibre (about 11g per ounce!) which is great for digestion and blood sugar levels. “Adding fibre to your diet should be done gradually. Chia seeds soak up lots of fluid so be sure you are drinking enough water to avoid any discomfort,” Rheam advises. Chia seeds are also known to provide essential minerals for bone health, muscle function and tissue repair, most notably calcium, manganese and phosphorus. Jazz up your salads, smoothies, yogurt or morning cereal by simply sprinkling some Chia seeds over. The kids won’t even notice the taste, making them easy to add to pretty much anything.

No time to spare? Just soak chia seeds in any dairy or non-dairy milk, watch them swell and form a gel-like texture and enjoy as a snack or a dessert. They are also an excellent source of important omega 3 fatty acids, which have been attributed to lowering the risk of heart disease and stroke. Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid, not produced by the body. “We need omega 3 fats for regulation of blood pressure, controlling blood clotting and maintaining the health of the brain, eyes and heart. Omega 3 is especially important for women during pregnancy, as it is essential for the development of the unborn baby's brain and vision,” says Rheam. July-August 2015

GULF DIABETES SPECIALIST CENTER

DIABETES AND FASTING

Diabetes is a chronic disease and patients often have a list of medications. Some will experience diabetic complications they need to be aware of, such as blood sugar levels during Ramadan and how to avoid the risk of specific conditions which may lead to serious complications.

D

iabetic patients should take care if they are fasting during Ramadan as there are many risks. Dr Rabaa Mohamed Alhajeri, consultant family physician diabetologist at Gulf Diabetes Specialist Center explains how to avoid the risk of: Hypoglycaemia: Patients on oral therapy (pancreatic sensitisers) drugs and on insulin injections are prone to develop hypoglycaemia, or low blood sugar, which can cause accidents, loss of consciousness and coma. Patients should consult a doctor to adjust the dosage of oral and insulin therapy which will help prevent hypoglycaemia attacks.

Dehydration: Due to reduced fluid intake, patients can become dehydrated, leading to a fast deterioration of diabetics with renal impairment or those with a history of kidney stones and urinary tract infections. “If a diabetic patient has signs of hypoglycaemia, he should break his fast by taking Dr Rabaa Mohamed Alhajeri any sweetened drink, wait 15 minutes and measure the Hyperglycaemia: High blood blood sugar level again to make sugar, which can occur due to sure it has risen,” says Dr Alhajeri. over eating after breaking the fast “All patients should understand or from a reduced dosage of the that they must immediately end patient’s oral or insulin therapy, as their fast if hypoglycaemia (blood during Ramadan medication can be glucose of <60 mg/dl [3.3 mmol/l])

occurs even minutes before sunset. “For patients with Type 2 diabetes who are well-controlled with lifestyle therapy alone, the risk associated with fasting is quite low. However, there is still a risk of postprandial hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar following a meal) if patients overindulge.” Pregnant women with pregestational or gestational diabetes (two forms of diabetes mellitus occurring during pregnancy) are at very high risk and are strongly advised not to fast during Ramadan. Following Porsche’s philosophy of increasing performance without compromising efficiency, despite the additional 30hp power, the combined fuel consumption is equal to the 911 Targa 4S (9.2 to 10.0 l/100km depending on the type of transmission). The Targa concept was developed in 1965 to deliver safe driving enjoyment with all-wheel drive and a wide rollover protection bar instead of B-pillars. The car has a moveable roof section to add an element of fresh-air fun, which can be stowed fully automatically at the press of a button in just 19 seconds in the latest models. The new design mixes the timeless concept of the original with the latest developments in Porsche performance and the new silhouette carries the sporty heritage of the Porsche GTS bloodline.

“The 911 Targa 4 GTS personifies the brand’s heritage in creating true sports cars for everyday life; delivering the latest in motor sport technology in the comfort, safety and luxury of a road car. The Targa logo on the silver rollover protection bar is also painted in silky gloss black. However, the GTS DNA is not confined to the exterior, the interior also bears the stamp of the Targa’s new family group. Globetrotting with Tots Theme parks, ski-resorts and jungle safaris are not your only options when planning a holiday with the family. Ankita Mamgain uncovers the family-friendly side of some seriously grown-up destinations.

I

f you thought once you had a family, a visit to the so called ‘adultonly’ playgrounds would be a far-fetched fantasy, think again. Some of these places are filled with kid-friendly attractions, which don’t get as much attention as their other offerings. So you don’t have to wait until graduation or for a friend or relative to babysit in order to enjoy your kind of break. As it turns out there are many cities, which do not enjoy a family-friendly reputation but still offer plenty of entertainment options, from museums and parks to zoos, that actually appeal all ages.

Barcelona's whimsical architecture may be enough to captivate a young traveller, but this city is also home to a number of attractions which will keep the little ones occupied for hours. Disney Themeparks, Various Locations

Known as the happiest place in the world; Disney is the first place that perhaps comes to mind when you say the word ‘themepark’. What can we possibly say about Disney that hasn’t been said before? Nobody does it better. Across all locations around the world, millions of children, parents, couples and singles come to be part of a fantasy. From rides, games, restaurants, animals and water parks to learning centres and spas, Disney’s got it all covered.

Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise, Japan

This is a beautiful, newgeneration leisure land, surrounded by nature. Located on the top of the Yokohama Bay, it houses the country’s first surf coaster that swings out over the ocean and has an exhilarating vertical fall. The amusement park also has an aquarium with 500 varieties of fish.

Cedar Point, USA If you love heights, high speed and that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach, then this is the place for you. Cedar Point has more roller coasters and rides than any other park in the world. Opened in 1870, the amusement park is spread across 365 acres and is located on a Lake Erie peninsula in Sandusky, Ohio. The park is home to the Wicked Twister, the tallest and fastest, inverted roller coaster in the world. There is also an 18-acre water park area, called Soak City.

Incredible

Escapes From quaint ferris wheels to monstrous, adrenalin-pumping rides, amusement parks have certainly come a long way and continue to push the boundaries of engineering and experience. Let’s take a trip to their fantastical world.

Everland Themepark, South Korea

Hersheypark, USA Welcome to this Willy Wonkatype playland for children and adults, with golf courses, theme parks, zoos, streetlamps shaped like Hershey Kisses and a chocolate spa where you can get covered in cocoa. The park has grown over the past century and is today “the sweetest place on earth”.

CHEF’S SPECIAL Alosra supermarket is known for its terrific To-Go range of ready meals and superb salads. The woman behind the range, food development specialist Sara Babar, shares one of her favourite recipes.

A

culturally-inspired foodie, Sara always loved cooking for family and friends but never imagined turning it into a career. Raised between Pakistan, Canada and Bahrain, her cooking is a reflection of the countries of her heritage. In Bahrain she found there was no better fit for her than Alosra supermarket, which embodies the same ideals on food; quality and freshness above all else. Sara joined Alosra as the in-house food development specialist in February 2014 and says the brand’s ‘think local’ campaign which aims to support local farmers, is something very close to her heart. Saying 2015 is all about real and nutritious food, she adds: “The only secret to wholesome cooking is using fresh ingredients, keeping it simple and enjoying it with loved ones.” Sara’s Caramelised Fig, Orange and Feta Salad Bahrain is notorious for its humid, scorching hot summers. Our appetites decrease and what we crave are the little pick-me-ups that help keep us cool. What better way to beat the heat than with a light refreshing salad? This caramelised

108 July-August 2015

fig, orange and feta salad is just what you need to help keep you satisfied and going throughout the day. The fresh figs are a succulent addition to your greens and are complemented with a light balsamic vinaigrette. This colourful, easy-to-make, hearty salad is the perfect way to greet summer and won’t disappoint. Ingredients For the salad • ¼ a cup brown muscovado sugar • 8 ripe figs cut in half length wise • 2 medium oranges peeled and cut into 1cm-thick rounds • 1 ½ cup arugula • 100g feta broken into small chunks • 1 cup baby spinach For the balsamic vinaigrette • 2 cloves of garlic crushed • 4tbsp good quality balsamic vinegar • 8tbsp good quality extra virgin olive oil • 2tbsp pure honey • Pink Himalayan salt to taste • Fresh black pepper to taste

Method Take two separate baking dishes and line them with parchment paper. Preheat the oven to 180°C for 15 minutes. Spread out the cut figs on one baking dish and the sliced oranges on the other one. Sprinkle the muscovado sugar evenly on the fruit and put them inside the oven. Let the fruit caramelise for 25 minutes or until the figs and oranges have a nice glaze on them. Once done take them out and let them cool slightly. In a separate bowl mix together the garlic, balsamic vinegar and honey. Slowly add the olive oil while whisking until the dressing emulsifies. Wash the arugula and baby spinach and lightly dress then with the balsamic vinaigrette. Lay it out on your serving plate and begin randomly placing the caramelised figs and oranges on the plate. Top with chunks of feta and drizzle the remaining dressing on top. Enjoy while the caramelised fruits are still slightly warm. www.womanthismonth.com

Sensational Seafood One of the many perks of living on an island is indulging in the delicious yield of the waters that surround it. Woman This Month got a taste of the ocean at this popular restaurant.

K

louds is an all-day dining restaurant located on the ground floor of The K Hotel and is one venue that never ceases to surprise when it comes to food. It has consistently delivered great cuisine, be it at the annual Iftars, weekly theme nights or the everyday offerings that diners choose to have à la carte. Its theme nights are a particular draw, considering the vast variety of fare on offer and the competitive rates. Every Thursday, the restaurant hosts a seafood night and for any connoisseur of seafood or good food in general, this is an absolute treat.

www.womanthismonth.com

Our evening started on a delightful note with a glass of seasoned red as we began to soak in the atmosphere. Klouds is a contemporary, multi-cuisine restaurant that maintains fine-dining standards while enjoying a casual ambience. The staff are so attentive and the warm smiles immediately make you feel welcome and at home. The seemingly unending spread started with a variety of canapés such as shrimp cocktail, smoked salmon with capers, sushi and seafood pâté and, of course, we wanted to try them all. Little did we know that there were also crab wantons, samboosas, spring rolls, soups and much more, just to whet your appetite! This was a delicious opening act to what was going to be a stellar main show – loaded with flavour, versatile enough to suit all palates and extravagant to say the least. The main attraction was the seafood thermidor. Delightfully creamy, it consisted of a hearty mix of fresh fish, squid, prawns and lobster. The accompaniments included a variety of rice, pasta arabiata, mashed potato and grilled vegetables. There was also the

malabari fish curry, a spicy Indian-style preparation served with steamed rice. For those who craved something Asian, there were seafood balls in a delicious gravy, served with fried rice. However the star attraction of the evening was the live cooking station – where you get to hand pick the day’s fresh catch and have it cooked to your liking. We tried some succulent fillets of dory, squid in lemon butter sauce, mussels, which were beautifully seasoned and, of course, who could leave out a luscious lobster tail. Ah bliss! This indulgent spree met a befitting end at the dessert bar where choices were aplenty, from fresh fruits to light blueberry panna cotta, a variety of cakes and pastries and um ali. Yes, Thursday traffic in Juffair is not something anyone wants to encounter, but a top-notch dining experience such as this makes it totally worth enduring a few extra minutes on the road. The buffet is priced at BD12++. July-August 2015

Star

Gazing For our combined issue you’ll have double of Raphael’s previsions. Check what the stars have planned for you.

July

Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 23

If someone had told you that your life was going to change so dramatically over the last few months when it comes to relationships, you would probably have dismissed the idea as pure nonsense. However, following on from the turmoil of a recent break up, only now will you be able to lift your head above the line of debris and start to make plans to put your world back on track once more.

Virgo Aug 24 – Sept 23

There were some difficult months for you to get through in the first part of 2015. Fortunately, the worst has now passed and the remainder of the year is set to be positive and filled with potential both on the work front and the emotional side. This is down in no small part to a more focused plan for your future, brought on by the decision to purchase a new property with your partner.

Libra Sept 24 – Oct 23

Looks like your loyalties are really going to be tested in the work place this month as issues that you have been locked in debate over for some time are finally resolved. You have long argued that constraints placed upon you were done so unfairly and although your case will be looked upon with some sympathy by your superiors they won’t give you every concession you have been fighting for.

110 July-August 2015

Aquarius Jan 21 – Feb 19

Health matters have been playing on your mind recently and whilst you might have been holding off from doing anything about it, a condition that has been causing you some discomfort needs attention. The consequences of a visit to the doctor could see you changing certain things about your diet and there could even be a surprise discovery concerning your complaint that you were not really aware of before.

Pisces Feb 20 – Mar 20

Insecurities you might have had about a relationship will be finally put to rest this month and you should look towards making plans to heal a longstanding rift. It won’t all be plain sailing but things will be a lot better than they were before and that’s really all that matters. On the work front you are really starting to feel under-valued and this is spurring you on to look elsewhere in the career market.

Leo Jul 24 – Aug 23

wounds from your past and are ready to experience life once more.

It’s an odd state of affairs because some of you are set to see a longstanding relationship blossom over the coming weeks whilst others are likely to be forced to accept the final collapse of any hopes you had been holding out on one. How do you know which is which? I think in most cases you’ll be able to find the answer out on this one yourself.

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20 Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 22

Financially you will have just enjoyed one of the most profitable months of the year and much of your success can be attributed to good, honest hard work. You are mid-way through a carefully scheduled plan and there is every indication that things will only get better as we move further into 2015. A recent change of direction in the work place has seen you get back to your very best.

Sagittarius Nov 23 – Dec 21

Just recently you might have been under the impression that your life has been sliding from one crisis to another and when July arrives you will have arrived at the stage when you could simply throw your hands in the air and concede defeat. However, if it’s any consolation the worst is behind you and soon the world is going to seem a much better place to be in.

Capricorn Dec 22 – Jan 20

Much water has passed under the bridge for you in the relationship stakes and your time spent mourning the end of a long-term partnership has seen you withdraw from the world for what seems an age. However, finally you are able to emerge from your self-imposed prison and begin greeting the world again. You appear to have healed the most painful

July will come to you spilling with opportunity and promising more than you can possibly imagine. However, you will be pleased to note that for once it’s okay to believe the hype, although you will need to keep your feet planted firmly on the ground if you want to ensure you make the best decisions possible. Take advice where you can and don’t be afraid to ask for more time.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21

Your initial thoughts might be ones of disappointment as you look back on six months of very hard work without much obvious return. However, all the effort you have put in over the first part of the year is going to slowly start paying off. Don’t forget that it takes a great deal of back-room dealing to secure success and that a plan without foundation might make it off the ground but is unlikely to stay standing for very long!

Gemini May 22 – Jun 21

A great number of you out there just aren’t the same people you used to be. Even if you go around denying it outwardly, inside yourselves you can’t escape the truth. Your friends see it. Your family have noticed. Even your work colleagues have mentioned it. The problem is if you do speak out it’s likely to cause a huge upheaval and change the course of your life and the life of a loved one forever. www.womanthismonth.com

Star

Gazing August

Leo Jul 24 – Aug 23

As has been said on countless occasions, the course of love is never a steady one and we can each of us expect to encounter our fair share of lows along the way, no matter how close we might be to someone. It is therefore going to be difficult for you to accept the magnitude of a partner’s revelation this month and there will be a few tears of hurt before your emotions harden and the lion within you charges to the fore.

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20

This month is going to be all about going on holiday and making the most of the financial benefits you have accrued through hard work over the last few months. This is going to be a special trip away with a loved one and you will return refreshed and ready to take on the challenges that lie ahead. A potential investment overseas will also allow you to look at expanding your portfolio further and if you’re quick you’ll grab a bargain!

Virgo Aug 24 – Sept 23

If some of you have been feeling a little down or dissatisfied this August then perhaps now is the time to think about flinging off those tired restraints that are holding you back and aiming high in pursuit of your ambitions. The chance to revolutionise your life is just around the corner for so many of you but if you fail to follow your instincts, it could be a long time before the opportunity comes around again.

Libra Sept 24 – Oct 23

The next few weeks will present you with some difficult choices – many of which will have a lasting effect on your life – so make sure you think carefully about what you really want before committing to anything or anyone. You have been feeling pressured by your situation and the demands of those closest to you lately so if the truth be told, the best thing you can do right now to sort your head out is to take a break.

Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 22

You have suffered a few knock-backs to your confidence recently and whilst you may not be relishing the new areas of responsibility that you are about to face, in the long term this will aid your return to a level of strength and stability. Don’t look upon what lies ahead with trepidation or concern but instead embrace the challenges as opportunities.

Sagittarius Nov 23 – Dec 21

You have been extending yourself financially over the last few months to alarming degrees but the time has now come for you to start www.womanthismonth.com

and itchy feet will soon see you answering the call of the travel agent. It will be whilst you are out of the country that a red-haired individual will offer you the chance to make a lot of money on a speculative venture. No matter how convincing (or alluring!) you should be wary of being taken in by his or her argument. You have a lot to lose, so be warned: it will only end in tears.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 exercising a little more restraint and accept that not everything in life can be achieved immediately. Whilst you may want your own way, you have to learn that you can’t always get it. Much to your chagrin you will have to accept the situation and move on.

Capricorn Dec 22 – Jan 20

The dust has only just settled on a family dispute when you could find yourself having to deal with another major headache in the form of an invoice that will take a big bite out of your savings. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be anyway past it and you will have to accept the bill. You could also do with a holiday and it would be wise to perhaps get away and relax somewhere far from the challenges of everyday life.

Aquarius Jan 21 – Feb 19

Just when you thought things were going to be financially strained, a stroke of good fortune will turn everything around and save you from a rather embarrassing situation. This doesn’t mean you can afford to go wild; simply that you will be able to carry on without any shortterm worry. If ever there was a time to believe in Lady Luck then it will have to be now.

Pisces Feb 20 – Mar 20

Your head will be filled with thoughts of travel

You are going to get some great news this month that will set you up for the year and also allow you to spread your wings and delve into other markets that you have been speculating over for a while now. You will need to bring partners on board to really take advantage of the possibilities on offer and though you might be sceptical of this approach you will soon see the benefits of that decision.

Gemini May 22 – Jun 21

August is set to herald significant changes as you take control of your life and set events in motion that will alter your working environment for a long time to come. After months of dissatisfaction, you will move into a much more positive stretch of development. How you deal with this opportunity will go a long way towards determining what you achieve. The good news is that your destiny is in your own hands.

Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 23

August will find many of you in a philosophical frame of mind as you come to terms with a struggling relationship. It’s going to require a great deal of discipline and determination on your part to make some headway with the person concerned. If both of you set in agreement, then you should be able to reach a happy medium. You are an emotional sign at heart and work best when your feelings are free-flowing and satisfied. July-August 2015
