EDITOR’S NOTE
he heat is already here bringing our June issue with it. This also means that Ramadan is just around the corner and we should get ready. Make all the preparations in advance like adjusting your routine to have your meals at home during sunlight hours (if you don’t fast) and adapting your wardrobe to a more conservative style. Don’t forget to follow the etiquette (and rules) of this period, such as not having water in public places. During evening hours, the island wakes up and restaurants and malls work at full speed. We’ve selected some of the Iftars and Ghabgas offered in the Kingdom by hotels and restaurants, so you can pick your favourite spot to share your meal and valuable time with friends and family. Most of the places have Arabic food as the main attraction, but you can also find international cuisine among the traditional local selections. To embrace the feast in style, opt for a place with a special tent and Arabic traditions. This month, our cover star is the lovely Karima Sharabi, who transformed her meaningful tattoos, made with inspiration from traditional Arabic calligraphy, into stunning jewellery. Big thanks to lenSway for the cover shot. Our editorial director, Liz O’Reilly, spoke to two interesting ladies, Mary-Justine Todd about her work with Women’s Crisis Care International and Anna Thompson-Hall, a cranio-sacral therapist and opera singer. Our June issue also brings a motoring special, featuring the car styles available in the market and two amazing test-drives for Porsche and Audi. Mamma Mia, Rome is here! Ankita Mamgain explores the most beautiful regions of Italy in her travel pages, while in our food pages we share some traditional Italian recipes.

As I’ve been feeling that time is passing by too fast (It’s Ramadan again!), I decided to wear my watches more frequently (I don’t usually wear them every day). Maybe this way I can track time and account for where it is going. I love this selection of cool timepieces.

Parenting Tips I receive your magazine every month and I am really enjoying Ghada Salem’s (from Mums in Bahrain) pages. Sometimes I don’t know what to do with my kids and I use the same excuses I’ve seen other parents using that there isn’t much to do in the island. We also blame the weather for anything, however, Ghada always brings interesting ideas, such as the brilliant ways of keeping our kids active and healthy. I’m definitely using her advice of planning the meals with my kids, making it fun with print-outs. Carolyn.
Letter Bride to Be Your wedding special in Woman This Month May issue is really complete! I’m getting married in September and the whole feature is definitely helping me out. From the beautiful pictures in the photoshoot to the compilation of what each hotel in the island offers. I truly recommend anyone that is planning their wedding ceremony in Bahrain to have a look in this publication. The editorial team did a great job! Shanya.
Super Women It is really good to see an article like “From Distress to De-Stress” that shows that we don’t have to be wonder women. This multi-faceted woman society wants, just drags us to stress. I’m a stay-at-home mum and some days my level of stress is extremely high. Some people say: “but how? You stay at home the whole day,” what people don’t know is that many things can trigger stress. My way of dealing with it is to do something by myself and for myself at least twice a week to keep my sanity. Janice.

espresso is a reference in the coffee market worldwide. Always looking for new ways to express its passion for this simple and at the same time complex drink. The latest addition to the brand’s variety of coffee choices is the Perú Secreto. The limited edition Grand Cru is a unique coffee sourced from the remote coffee farms that cling in the Andean hillsides and valleys of Peru. The new aroma joins the Pure Origin range, which includes Indriya from India, Rosabaya de Colombia, Dulsão do Brasil and Bukeelaka Ethiopia. Each of these coffees are sourced from a single country of origin and reflect the region’s flavour profiles. The new blend is an intense, sweet and round espresso with roasted and cocoa notes. Its intensity is classified as eight and it is well paired with milk. Its silky

texture and pleasant, long-lasting finish will take you to the remote Peruvian Andes. Added to the new flavour, Nespresso brings a brand new coffee cup. The brand is well-known for its connection with the design world, as you can see from its sleek machines. However, it is not only about design. To reinforce the sensorial experience, the brand collaborated with Berlin-based industrial design studio Geckeler Michels to create the Touch Collection. The new range of cups combines ultimate design with a way of intensifying the coffee aroma. To achieve this, the cups have a concave bottom to ensure the optimal cream, in terms of finesse and quantity. And the compact porcelain of the cup keeps the coffee at the perfect temperature. The Touch Collection is available in four different sizes to meet the preference of all customers: Espresso (80ml), Lungo (170ml), Cappuccino (180ml) and Mug (300ml). www.womanthismonth.com

SUMMER STAPLES Every season we pick our favourite items. Here are the six key ‘must have’ pieces for this summer’s warm weather wardrobes. Heat-up!
GEISHA INSTINCT
Tops, dresses and jackets are influenced by the kimono cut. The strap around the waist, loose fabric and wide sleeves can be spotted on many fashionable clothes racks around the island. Massimo Dutti has a selection of clean and minimal designs and this trendy piece is part of the brand’s summer collection. Grab your twisted kimono and sayonara!
SET YOUR LEGS FREE
Wide-legged trousers are an essential of laid-back summer days and nights. They flow with the warm breeze and are a gem for the stylish girl’s wardrobe. If paired with flats, the look is really casual and when teamed with high-heels (pumps or sandals), it’s more sophisticated. Mango introduces this style in monochrome shades that will make you forget your skinny jeans.
BOTANICAL SPECIES Floral prints are synonymous with sunny days. Applied in all sorts of clothing designs, accessories and even home décor, this pattern is a safe pick. This season, opt for different kinds of flowers to refresh this old-fashioned (not to say tired) print. Women’s Secret has this fresh and summery playsuit to be used after swimming or for a day at the beach.
18 June 2015
CLOUD WALKING Espadrilles are the most comfy cool footwear for spring and summer. Originally made in simple canvas fabric, nowadays you can find them in sophisticated materials such as suede and leather. This Dune design brings a mix and match of interesting textures that can be paired to dandy white or khaki shorts.

HIDE AND SEEK
The transparent trend is still a hot pick. Michael Kors came up with a completely transparent, full-length skirt worn over a long white t-shirt. This combo is a great way to introduce the see-through trend to your everyday style without showing much. If you go for a transparent blouse, wear it over a tank top.
HELLO SAILOR A nautical navy, red and white combination says summer out-loud. Sailor inspiration can be spotted in stripes and colour coordinations or even in obvious anchor and marine life stamps. Tommy Hilfiger brings its own interpretation of the maritime influence with a modern flourish. All aboard!

Check out Woman This Month’s favourite dresses from the Met Gala 2015 which had the theme, China: Through the Looking Glass. The event happened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
HAILEY BALDWIN
The model and daughter of Stephen Baldwin abandoned her bright blond tresses and unveiled a dark brunette hairstyle for the event. The 18-year-old went high-street picking a short Topshop dress, instead of popular floorlength designer numbers. The robin’s egg blue shade and embellished elements finalised her youthful look.
GEORGIA MAY JAGGER
Mick Jagger’s daughter opted for Gucci wearing a custom lilac silk georgette, belted, floorlength gown embellished with an Asian multicoloured motif of flowers and birds. The details were hand embroidered with silk threads, glass beads and crystal. Black patent leather, lace-up boots with pom pom detail finished the look.

EMILY BLUNT
The Into the Woods star picked a steel blue Prada dress to stand out on the evening. The gown’s eyecatching elements are the keyhole neckline, the crystal embellishments and, of course, the navy cape. The colour coordination is a plus and the detailing in both dress and cape, elevates the sophistication of the gown.
JESSICA HART
The Australian model stunned in a long-sleeved intricate design from Valentino. The deep velvet, floor-length frock covered her entire figure, however, her silhouette was still visible with the heavy embellishment sitting on a sheer background. She paired her jaw-dropping dress with a black cat clutch for a funky and fun touch.
www.womanthismonth.com
AMAL CLOONEY
The famous human rights attorney stunned in a Maison Margiela number by John Galliano. The red gown and its numerous layers stole the night and not even her most precious accessory, her husband George, could compete with that. The dress featured a sequinned bodice and tiers of red silk, some adorned with white lace detailing. A new interpretation to the classic strapless frock.
ANNE HATHAWAY
The Oscar winner showed up on the red carpet wearing a gold, hooded dress from Ralph Lauren Collection. The column evening dress was custommade in gold lame which made her look slender and statuesque while posing for the cameras. The actress usually chooses simple gowns, but this time simplicity took on a new level of inventiveness, thumbs up!

ong skirts are a great option to cover your legs in style. You can opt for envelope, straight, tight striped or full options in all sorts of patterns and colours. Tight numbers are best paired with loose tops while the ones with some volume require a tight top. This rose piece is a great cut to fit different body shapes. Pair it with a black and white-striped top or a similar shade to the skirt to create an elegant effect. If you go for pastel shades opt for brownish accessories to complement. idi-skirts have conquered our hearts. They’ve been in our wardrobes for the past three seasons (or more) and now we can’t live without them! This classy style is a wardrobe staple, pair it with a plain white shirt and you’ll be ready for any occasion. Opt for a black number and wear with flat ballerinas to get the perfect workwear mood. To transform the outfit for evening gatherings, add some colourful pumps and a smart clutch. This kind of attire allows you to be playful with your accessory choices, pick a chunky necklace to finalise the look. www.womanthismonth.com

ot in the mood for skirts? Choose a funky pair of checked trousers to enjoy the evening functions. This black and white option gives you the freedom to use any kind of top. EXQUISITE GEMS Embellish your Holy Month wardrobe with delicate but eye-catching jewellery. Pick your favourite trend and enhance your natural beauty. DELICATE BOUQUET ROSE Hyacinth, daffodils and tulips are finally blossoming again in all their splendour, an exciting moment to flower lovers. Among this natural beauty, one little bouquet will attract your attention: the Delicate Bouquet Rose. This striking jewellery ensemble consists of a necklace with pendant and ear-studs – very much en vogue owing to their floral design. The fine blossoms are arranged in a sphere and partially highlighted by fine zirconia pavé lines. The loop of the necklace is in the shape of an elongated flower stem stylishly wound into a bow. Material: silver, rose gold plated, zirconia.
SEASONAL SYMBOLS The symbols trend transforms jewellery pieces into very personal accessories. Esprit at A La Mode translates this affinity to symbolism into a new line. The line comprises a necklace with flower-shaped, stone-studded pendant and matching bi-colour stack ring. There is also a capricious butterfly design in which a butterfly outline and zirconia pavé are arranged on different levels. This striking collection emphasises the contrast between high polish precious metal and sparkling pavé and – owing to the three-dimensionality – imparts a noble aesthetic to the pendant. Material: silver, rhodium and rose goldplated, zirconia.
STACKING RINGS Women can never have enough rings and best of all is to mix and match them into fabulous combinations. Enjoy the new trend of stackable rings with Esprit at A La Mode’s spring and summer collection. A special selection of these “matchmakers” are available. Single rings of different families shine twice as beautifully when mixed. The colour play enchants with variations of silver and rose gold, while zirconia stones in heart or blossom shapes lend glamorous accents. The special highlight of the collection is the stacking rings, designed as duos, where different, bi-colour ring bands are stackable to merge gracefully into a single band. Material: silver, rhodium and rose gold-plated, zirconia. Call 17 179-863 (City Centre Bahrain) or 17 581-588 (Seef Mall).

The Holy Month
Ramadan is a month in the Islamic calendar in which Muslims all over the world fast from dawn to dusk. It is considered a holy time by Muslims during which they are required to refrain from eating, smoking or drinking from sunrise to sunset. In 2015, Ramadan is expected to start on June 18 and end on July 17. The date is approximate, because it depends on sighting of the new moon with the naked eye and it must be declared by the Saudi Arabian religious authorities. The period represents a month of introspection, giving you the opportunity to take care of your soul rather than the body. It is also a good time for non-Muslims, living in a Muslim country, to look inwards and give special attention to their spirituality. Use the period to be more thankful and to help those in need. There are many charity associations on the island that will be more than happy to accept your donations. This is also a period when the stores prepare Ramadan deals, enjoy the special offers for a chance to purchase that special item you’ve been keeping an eye on. Also, take the opportunity to spend more time with your family and friends. Woman This Month highlights the most pleasant spots to have an Iftar or Ghabga on the island.

T
he premium supermarket, Alosra has always been an advocate for preserving the environment and its latest campaign helps spread awareness about it in a fun and fashionable way. The name itself is a wordplay on the move to a more eco-conscious you: B-ECO-ME! You can now purchase reusable eco-friendly bags and ditch the plastic ones altogether. They are not just easy on the environment but are also designed with fun and stylish patterns, so you can use them for a variety of occasions, be it grocery shopping, a trip to the gym or just as a day bag. “We only have one Earth to live on and we need to start taking better care of it,” says marketing and product development manager, Pavlos Manousos Babiolakis. “The BECOME project has been underway for more than a year now and we are excited to finally be able to share the end results with our customers.” One of the most shocking facts Alosra
36 June 2015
discovered during the initial research was that in 2012 alone, enough plastic bags were used to cross the width of Bahrain nine times! “Considering that plastic bags are such a hazard, especially in terms of animal harm, it was crucial for us to take a stance and push for more eco-friendly solutions,” Pavlos adds. The presence of the campaign is evident the minute you walk into an Alosra store. With BECOME-themed panels displayed on walls and eco-bag units in clear sight, the push for a healthier environment cannot be missed. The campaign gets more interesting and fun with its mascot, a cute little bird named Ecoco, which offers fun environmental facts. “We wanted to ensure that BECOME would have a considerable impact on audiences, since it is tackling such an important issue,” says Yasmin Hussain, BMMI’s brand, communications and CSR Manager. “Ecoco creates that engaging communication that not only informs customers about the dangers of
using plastic bags, but also about the benefits of using the alternative, re-usable eco bags.” In addition to this, Ecoco transcends the age barrier, speaking to everyone, from children to adults. Changing habits is always hard, but Alosra is confident that with the support of individuals and companies across the Kingdom, there can be a shift towards being more environmentally responsible. “We hope that BECOME contributes to the change towards a better and greener Bahrain,” she adds. So the next time you find yourself in Alosra, head over to the BECOME stand and purchase an eco bag for only BD1.500. They are durable and a sight for sore eyes, but more importantly all eco bag profits are donated to local charities. Call 17 697-558 or visit www.alosraonline.com www.womanthismonth.com

The Essence of the Light Woman This Month meets the artist and designer Karima Sharabi for a chat about her new jewellery collection and the creative process behind it.
A
ll artists have a high level of sensibility, but not all of them show it off so subtly as Karima Sharabi. After just a few words you can feel that she exhudes tranquillity and positive energy besides loving what she does. The easy flow of the conversation means our chat could last for hours. Co-founder of The Generous Light Co, she just launched the company’s first brand, Chamkana. The collection offers a selection of jewellery inspired by her Arabic calligraphy art, and T-shirts for men. We found out how she expresses her beliefs through her creations. Woman This Month: When did you realise that you had the artistic vein? Karima Sharabi: I have always loved painting and drawing ever since I was young. In high school I studied art IB at the higher level and got a seven in my exams, which is the most you can score. I then went to Parsons School of Design in New York but was overwhelmed by the city, so I left to study political science at McGill in Montreal. However, in the back of my mind I always knew that I was an artist.
Karima at her studio.
WTM: How did you discover that you wanted to work with Arabic calligraphy? KS: I always knew I wanted to be an artist and be recognised for my work, but I felt so frustrated by the lack of artistic outlets in Bahrain. I tried every art course and workshop I could find; I did sewing, pottery and screen printing. However, I noticed that my spiritual growth went hand in hand with my creative development. It was my longing, a yearning for an understanding of me, which led me to my calligraphy designs. A creative block that seemed to last for years slowly dissipated as I began to explore it.
I feel a sense of relief that I have finally found my path in some ways and now, instead of feeling worried, I can flow with it more easily and let it take me to my destiny. WTM: You started designing tattoos, what is the story behind that? KS: My journey with Arabic lettering began when a childhood friend messaged me from Peru to ask me to write his daughter’s name in Arabic to have it tattooed on his skin. My imagery has always been quite fluid and the flow of calligraphy came naturally to me. His daughter’s name is Azul, which means blue in Spanish. Beginning with a few abstract designs, I shaped the letters of her name into a symbol that has significance for him as her father – a Piscean. The resulting symbol was a boat. This bore relevance to him as he felt that her birth helped him move forward in life in the same way that the sail of the boat - guided by a universal wind - led him on his path to self-discovery. WTM: Do you have a tattoo? Would you like to have one? KS: I don’t have any tattoos. I actually really love looking at tattoos on other people, but my preferences and aesthetics change so often that I can’t commit to having one design etched into my skin forever.

its owners – a permanent reminder of their strengths and virtues.
WTM: You have a unique way of working with words, how important are they to your art? And how does your creative process take form? KS: I love the spiritual poetry of Sufi masters like Hafiz and Rumi and Farid Uddin Attar’s work called Conference of the Birds and I often look to the writings of Khalil Gibran, Osho and Thich Nhat Hanh for ideas. My inspiration also comes from studying the beauty and flow of classical Arabic calligraphy. Calligraphy is a technique that is often associated with Islamic design and I love juxtaposing it and incorporating it into symbols from other cultures. My designs don’t follow traditional calligraphic rules so I can’t really be defined as an Arabic calligraphist, which is why I decided to call my art form ‘mystical Arabic writing’ because of its consistent allusion to oneness. All the elements come together to bring form to life, but also don’t abide by rules of form or structure. WTM: You created, in partnership with Noora Al Zain, The Generous Light Co, what is your aim and the projects under it? KS: We want it to be a platform for likeminded artists and designers to be able to showcase their work on a large scale. The Generous Light Company believes in viable, sustainable and ethical business practice with the aim of supporting commercial organisations that reflect our ethos. By investing in and encouraging the development of commercial ventures that practise fair trade, support charitable causes and encourage the creative community. In essence, we want to offer a new way of thinking about commercial business and merchandise - our view is holistic and our business model is inspired by a collective consciousness. www.womanthismonth.com
WTM: You are a businesswoman now. What are the biggest challenges you’re facing? KS: I am definitely an artist first and a businesswoman second. I find it difficult to be organised and keep track of spending and receipts and all the meetings and tasks we have to complete. Sometimes, I am too laid back. All I want to do is draw! But that is why Noora is such an amazing partner; not only do we have the same taste and aesthetics but she’s organised, energetic and has an extensive knowledge of dealing with clients and deadlines. She really keeps up the momentum. We make a great team.
WTM: Chamkana is one of the brands you have, why jewellery? Are you planning to expand the collection to other areas? KS: Noora saw my work and commissioned a design from me and then said: “It would make great jewellery”. She works for Al Zain Jewellers, her family business, and has an extensive knowledge of the industry, so we started designing a collection together. Although we are starting off with jewellery we want to be more of a lifestyle brand because of our very strong philosophy. At the moment we also have T-shirts for men, gold temporary tattoos, mugs and prints all based on the 12 tattoo designs which form the Chamkana line. We will eventually have a wider range of products based on my designs, but also have the collaboration of other artists. In Urdu, Chamkana means “to radiate or to shine” and the Chamkana symbols are all formed from words that radiate positivity, love and tolerance. The jewellery, like the tattoos I design, acts as a totem to each of
WTM: How do you manage your professional life and family? KS: It’s not easy to have a business and spend a lot of time with my kids. I have to be more organised. I try to administer my schedule and get all my work done to then spend quality time with my two kids. I really believe that you don’t have to spend all day with your children to make them happy. Spending small amounts of time when you really listen to them and give them your full attention makes them feel important and loved. Also, I love my work and a happy mummy has happy children! I hope that I can be a good role model for them and show them that you can find success in what you love to do. WTM: What are your future projects? KS: I will continue working on my tattoos and mystical Arabic designs, while coming up with new collections for The Generous Light Co. We would also like to create pieces of jewellery for charity, the proceeds of which would go to a good cause. We want to continuously give back to the community and broaden our message of love and tolerance, spreading the generous light. g Products can be found online at www.thegenerouslightco.com or at Mimosa, Aali Mall.

A Friend in Need A new service has been launched to help women at their most vulnerable. Liz O’Reilly spoke to Mary-Justine Todd of Women’s Crisis Care International to find out more.
Mary-Justine Todd, Women’s Crisis Care International
I
magine you have been raped or beaten, physically or sexually assaulted. Not a comfortable thought! Now imagine you are at the hospital. Someone wants to take your blood, someone else wants to perform an intimate examination. It may be a case of domestic violence and you’ve, at last, found the courage to seek help, so there’s a police officer wanting to take your statement. And all you want is to be left alone! You’re worried about your kids, yourself, where will you spend the night? What’s going to happen tomorrow? You’re in pain and frightened and you need a friend, someone who’s 100 per cent on your side and someone who will be by your side to help you get through. That’s where Women’s Crisis Care International (WCCI) comes in. Set up in January by Mary-Justine Todd, herself a certified rape counsellor in the USA who has managed similar programmes in New York City and Sub-Saharan
42 June 2015
Africa, the service aims to get to women at the point of crisis and offer help and support. “When a woman is the victim of domestic or sexual violence, it is not uncommon that she will never go for long-term help,” says MaryJustine. “There is a window of opportunity
we have to reach these women, when they are at the hospitals, so that’s where the crisis counsellors go.” Mary-Justine started working on the project when she came to Bahrain to join her husband two years ago and found there were many www.womanthismonth.com
It’s also important to remember that we never offer advice, only information to give the survivor the option of deciding what they want to do and then helping them get there wonderful services offered, but no specific violence crisis service available. Now, with the support of some of Bahrain’s most powerful families and female members of the Shura Council, WCCI is operational and has a vision to “be a global leader in the promotion of effective crisis response care for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, as well as in providing counselling for survivors, thereby promoting the overall empowerment of women around the world”. Mary-Justine is very quick to point out that, though statistics on rape and domestic violence are not readily available in the region, “This is not a Bahraini problem, it’s a world problem. The statistics that do exist through the World Health Organisation show that one in three women globally will have experienced some sort of domestic or sexual violence, which is about the same throughout the world. “And, in fact, when you research it, Bahrain has some very strong and progressive laws protecting women. People just sometimes are not aware of that.” The first set of 20 voluntary advocate counsellors underwent their 40-hour training during January and February and are now working to collaborate with two of the island’s biggest hospitals. Mary-Justine says: “All the counsellors are volunteers as that’s the best way to ensure the focus stays on the victim. If you put people in a paid situation, they are going to be looking to progress their careers, writing reports, answering to their manager. This way, it is 100 per cent about the women who need help and the counsellors are there because they want to be.” www.womanthismonth.com
Duty advocate counsellors are on call 24/7 and WCCI is also working with the hospitals to train staff to spot the signs of domestic or sexual abuse. “A counsellor is not going to walk into a traumatised woman and say ‘Hi I’m here because you got raped’, the training is about using sensitive language and trying to make the women feel less vulnerable. It might also be that, in the case of domestic violence, the woman will not have said what’s happened, maybe passing her injuries off as an accident. “In this case the counsellor will say something like ‘I deal with women who may have difficult issues and I’m here for you if you want to talk’. “Sometimes the woman will say there’s not a problem or even tell the counsellor to go away and, if that’s the case, they will just say ‘OK, I’m going to be outside for a while in case you change your mind’. “Once the women do start to talk and accept help, the most important thing we tell them is ‘it’s not your fault!’. “Our job is to act as a bumper and a bridge. For a vulnerable survivor of sexual or physical assault, the whole hospital process can be a bit overwhelming. Everyone, from the nurse taking a blood sample to the police officer taking a statement, is doing their job and trying to help but sometimes it just needs someone to say ‘step back and give her some breathing space’ and that’s the advocate’s job. “We also act as a bridge in that survivors will often need access to further services such as ongoing counselling or practical things like changing the locks on their home or sorting
out childcare. The advocates who are with the women at the time of crisis can put them in touch with these services and, though many of the first group of advocates are actually trained counsellors, they will put the women in touch with different professionals once out of the hospital situation which we find is better and safer for everyone involved. “It’s also important to remember that we never offer advice, only information to give the survivor the option of deciding what they want to do and then helping them get there.” WCCI will shortly be recruiting a second wave of around 50 volunteer counsellor advocates who it’s hoped will begin their training in September. To be involved you don’t have to have any special qualifications as the training is specifically tailored to the crisis role but you must be prepared to be on-call for 24-hour duty periods, one or two times each month. WCCI held a sisterhood lunch at the end of May to thank those who have helped get the project off the ground and are continuing to offer support. Attendees included female members of the Shura Council who MaryJustine says have been very supportive. For more information visit www.womenscci.org. June 2015

A Woman of Many Talents Cranio-sacral therapist, psychotherapist, trained opera singer and humanitarian, WTM talked to the multi-faceted Anna Thompson-Hall about her many roles.
“G
rowing up in the Far East I saw mothers massaging their babies. They were so content, and I was aware of the connection between loving touch and human happiness,” says Anna. That early experience paved the way for a life-long ambition to relieve the suffering others through touch. Initially intending to study psychiatry, Anna recognised she needed more life experience before going to university. Her parents agreed – but instead of letting her travel, sent her to finishing school for two years. Working as a PA in London, a chance meeting with a colleague studying osteopathy part-time proved a turning point in her life. “I had my daughter in my final year of osteopathy training, and suffered terrible back pain which didn’t respond to osteopathic treatment. A fellow-student gave me a craniosacral therapy (CST) treatment – and feeling the pain melting away, I realised this was what I wanted to do,” she says. CST is a therapy focusing primarily on the subtle pulse of the cranio-sacral fluid bathing the brain and spinal cord. During birth, the bones of the skull compress in on one another (due to the ‘hole’ at the top of the head) then spring open immediately after birth, stimulating the initial basal sacral rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
44 June 2015
A fellow-student gave me a cranio-sacral therapy (CST) treatment – and feeling the pain melting away, I realised this was what I wanted to do CST deals with regulating this basal sacral rhythm, using therapeutic touch to gently manipulate the synarthrodial joints of the cranium. This is achieved through light touch mainly to the head, though other body points can also be used. “CST restores balance by gently harmonising the CSF pulse, or by following its ‘tugging’ into the lesion and gently unwinding tension,” says Anna. “People experience deeply relaxing warmth or pulsation in areas being treated. CST is safe, nonintrusive and suitable for all ages. “I can explain the science but, honestly, nothing is quite like feeling the sensation and relief for yourself.” During almost 30 years of practice Anna has dealt with many extreme cases. But, as physical
pain was released, clients often opened up about emotional issues. With clients coming through personal recommendation, Anna recognised she needed further qualifications to work with the mind and honour the trust placed in her. She achieved advanced diplomas in hypnotherapy and psychotherapy, pain management, hypnobirthing and other therapies including reiki. With an honours degree in complementary therapies (stress management) she creatively combines treatments to relieve and manage pain. In 2005 Anna left a thriving practice in London to join her husband in Saudi Arabia, moving to Bahrain in 2010. But there’s more to Anna than healing. When not treating clients, you’ll find her singing with the Manama Singers, or with local musicians for operatic and jazz performances. She recently performed at the British Embassy for the BSPCA and will be performing with band Reunion on June 11 at the Dilmun Club for Tony the Dogfather. She says: “I love music. My mother is a wonderful singer – and singing always has happy associations with family. It’s my own personal therapy; something I love, a great way to socialise and give back to the community.” To find out more about Anna’s work Tel: 39 503-495 or visit www.intouchclinic.com. www.womanthismonth.com

The Heat is On
Seeking overall wellbeing while fighting some of the common complaints of desk-dwellers like ourselves, we stumble upon this age-old therapy. Ankita Mamgain explores more.
B
alance is perhaps one of the most abused words in the English dictionary, used frequently and inadvertently in a variety of contexts. A key to our existence, balance is what’s lacking in our lives, well for the most part at least. The ‘balanced diet’ is a far fetched suggestion for most and phrases like ‘balance of the mind and body’ are limited to spa and wellness retreat brochures. But fortunately, no matter how fast-paced our lives may be, there is still room for quick-fixes that can restore equilibrium. Our predominantly sedentary state can lead to a number of ailments, both physical and mental and one kind of therapy that has yielded results over centuries is thermotherapy or heat therapy. "Give me the power to produce fever, and I will cure all disease," is a quotation attributed to Hipocrates more than 2,300 years ago. We don’t have to resort to such extremes but from the rays of the sun to the more modern methods of laser and ultrasound, or even a gentle massage, heat can alleviate a wide range of problems. For me it has always done wonders. Right from a warm hug to a hot-water-bottle, which comes to my rescue almost every month, I can vouch for its instantly calming effects.

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian therapeutic practice, acknowledges its powerful properties, such as promoting circulation, improving digestion and stimulating healing. Ayurvedic practitioners call it Agni-Karma or ‘fire-therapy’. Today thermotherapy has a range of uses
from weight loss to treating depression and even cancer. But here, the focus is on beauty and how a little extra warmth can help you look and feel fabulous. Many of the heat-centric traditional methods of skin care and rejuvenation have been around for centuries and are still quite popular. Often www.womanthismonth.com
combining thermal with hydro therapy they are designed to cleanse, invigorate and refresh the mind and body. Here are some of them: Caldarium: The stone floors, walls and curved stone seating of the caldarium is heated to create a calming and purifying effect, allowing the body to heat up gently in a warm, dry environment, releasing toxins and purifying the skin. Sauna: Heated to a temperature around 80 to 100 degrees Celsius with minimal humidity, this room creates dry and intense heat for a purifying effect on the body. The benefits of a sauna include cleansing and detoxification of skin, relieving tired aching muscles and joints and increasing circulation. The room can sometimes be infused with herbal essence that helps you relax both emotionally and physically. Steam: A must for anyone who likes to take care of their skin, it gently eases out muscular tension, relaxes your mind and absorbs toxins from the skin. A few minutes regularly spent in steam room stimulates blood circulation, leaving skin cleansed and radiant as well as being good for natural weight loss. The popular hot-stone massage has an interesting variant called the Lava Shell treatment and I went over to Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain’s Rimal Spa to try it out. The relaxing one-hour session uses heat, produced in real sea shells from the South Pacific, to gently massage your body. Upon arrival I was given a questionnaire to fill in, which took note of my skin type, any allergies and problem areas. I was escorted to the massage room by my attendant Peerya and she showed me the locker, slippers, bathrobe and other shower accoutrements. After taking steam for 10 minutes I was ready for the massage. Peerya began by running a coarse brush all over my body which she told me awakens the surface nerves and simulates circulation. She then used

Infrared body wrap: This treatment is currently very popular. It heats up your body from the inside out, penetrating up to one and half inches deep into the skin and enabling the body to release toxins and melt away body fat. The wraps sculpt your figure into a shapely silhouette contouring the curves, apparently by encouraging bodies to sweat out deeply buried toxins and excess inches. Other benefits
include rejuvenated, smooth skin, lessened joint pain, reduced cellulite and an amazing feeling of wellbeing. Massages: They’ve been around since time immemorial and, when incorporated with thermal elements like hot stones and herbal pouches, have yielded great results in muscle relaxation, pain relief and de-stressing. aromatic oil and Swedish massage movements to ease out the muscles before bringing in the warm and satin-smooth shells. The heat comes from inside the lava shells via a mixture of a minerals and algae with salt water and essential oils. Combined together, they start a chemical reaction that produces heat for some time. The massage included a cleansing of the feet with a grainy exfoliator wiped away with hot steamed towels, which
felt wonderful! What I really liked was how the clam shells fit into the palm of her hand, so I could feel both the heat of the clam shell and the touch of her fingertips. It's primarily a relaxing and soothing massage. For deeper work, hotstone might be a better choice; also offered at Rimal Spa. For me this relaxing interval was an absolute treat, which left me truly refreshed and energised; a session I wouldn’t really mind shelling out for.

Driven Away Who says women can’t be car enthusiasts? Some of us may not understand all the features and specifications, but we definitely know how to appreciate an outstanding automobile. We care about design, comfort, practicality and safety. We usually are the ones making the final decision when buying a family car, when not deciding by ourselves. And these days women are also more independent financially and making their own choices.
The car industry is aware of these changes and the brands are listening to women’s opinions and expectations to develop more suitable automobiles for us. We’ve come up with this special feature highlighting car styles and examples. And we also tested out the latest models from Porsche and Audi. Drive safely!

HIT THE ROAD!
R
Looking for a new car, but not sure which style you should pick? Woman This Month has prepared a guide that may help you decide.
amadan is always a great time to invest in a new car. However, how to pick the right car for you? Budget must be the first question and then it comes the model, brand and so it goes. It can be your first car or maybe the family is growing, or
you can be just tired of your old companion. A car is an important acquisition in Bahrain, it is difficult to get from one place to another without a vehicle. But before you make your choice, we’ve listed the styles available to help you make your mind up.
COUPÉ Considered sporty, this body style is a variant of the sedan. Usually coming with two-doors (it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer), this type of car derived from the days when horse-driven carriages were popular. The term coupé was initially applied to closed carriages without rear-facing seats. Created for an intimate driving feel, coupés provide for a broad range of motoring tastes and budgets. For those looking for sleek sportiness, but wanting more than a two-door car, a styling evolution shows some premium car brands creating four-door coupés. The Audi A5 is a classic car from this body range.
SEDAN Also called a saloon, this is a passenger car with four-doors and a separate trunk (boot) storage area. This long-running body style is the most popular among car buyers. Whether you are a single person or part of a family, this car can be very useful. Sedans can be unofficially classified as family vehicles, which sell most for their interior space and practicality, the choices include Nissan Altima and Ford Fusion. Then there are sports sedans, which feature more potent engines and firmer suspension systems such as the BMW 3 series. And the last subcategory is the luxury sedan, classified for its comfort and long list of amenities, the Rolls-Royce Ghost is a prime example.
SUV Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) have existed since the 1930s but only really came to popularity during the 1990s. The four-wheel-drive vehicle was conceived during World War II, so it’s generally associated with toughness and stout on-road and off-road performance. SUVs have since been transformed and are now becoming the vehicle of choice for luxury-minded drivers. A good example is the Range Rover. The ones equipped with two-wheel drive are a good choice for customers wanting to save money and fuel, but keep in mind that they lose off-road ability. Mid-sized SUVs are better for manoeuvring and generally easier on fuel consumption.
VAN Usually used for business purposes or to carry passengers, this vehicle has a single large enclosed area. Vans are styled for practicality rather than other factors such as performance. Built on truck-like frames, they are very useful for commercial entities that require toughness and durability. If equipped for passengers, large vans can seat up to 15 occupants. But you also have family vans, usually called minivans. The modern versions can include a number of family-centric features such as sophisticated rear seat and entertainment systems. They are losing their popularity, but several minivans are still for sale, mainly in the US, including the Dodge Grand Caravan.

SPORTS CAR These cars are rarely practical, they are intended to create an atmosphere of fun for the driver on the streets or at the race track. They are usually small, close to the ground and with very limited interior space. Most of them have seats for two passengers only. The construction of a sports car often relies on lightweight components such as aluminium and carbon fibre to maximise engine power. Despite the enormous horsepower, the future of this vehicle category is becoming enriched with powertrain technology such as hybrid platforms. Some sports car examples are the Porsche 911 and Ferrari Berlinetta.
LUXURY CAR The most valuable feature in a luxury car is comfort. If you think of the oddity and expense of early automobiles, this category was actually one of the first vehicle types established. The expense of its components takes it to a higher level when compared to conventional autos. Both brand prestige and technology are responsible for the high price. Many automotive features first appear on luxury cars before reaching the mass market. Luxury vehicles can be found in almost all body styles from coupés and sedans to convertibles and SUVs. Today’s luxury cars offer a more performance car-like ride, for a faster and smarter driving experience. Due to their high prices, luxury cars are often produced in lower quantities, sometimes even as limited editions such as the Maserati Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna.
HYBRID CAR Using the strengths and efficiency of two power sources, hybrid cars have emerged as an important vehicle class. They usually operate with a combustion engine and electric power motor working together to enhance fuel economy or to boost power. Plug-in hybrids are gaining popularity in the market, they can run like an electric car for a certain distance and then use the fuel-burning engine when the battery is depleted. This is a great option if you are considering an electric car, but there is still a concern with low battery ranges. However, if you are only travelling a short distance each day, you may be able to avoid regular trips to the gas station. The Porsche Cayenne S E-hybrid (see review pg56) falls in this category.
COVERTIBLE An open-air passenger cabin for travelling during good weather makes convertibles what they are. Early automobile history shows they were the only types of car originally available. Nowadays, a convertible is considered an automotive lifestyle choice. The biggest problem with this kind of vehicle is the amount of trunk space lost when the roof section is retracted. These cars are most used to enjoy scenic driving (not always the best option for the Middle East’s harsh weather). The different aerodynamics caused by an open top result in slower performance attributes. However, most convertibles are adapted from a coupé or share the characteristics of a sporty twodoor. Look for the BMW 4 series convertible. TRUCK OR PICKUP These are the work-horse of the auto industry. Opt for them if you want a heavy-duty vehicle or if you like tough cars like this. They are found with an open, flat bed for carrying a variety of cargo. Regular cab trucks provide single row seating while an extended cab adds rear seats for additional passengers. Offered with two doors or four depending on whether the cabin is extended, they are also usually available with two- or four-wheel drive systems and the engine choice is vast. The robust Ford F-150 Raptor is not only admired for its capacity but also for its design.

POSH WEEKEND Our editor Fernanda Langhammer was invited to test-drive one of the brand’s most popular cars in the region. Read on to find out about her experience.
W
hen I got the call from the people at Porsche saying I could spend a weekend with one of their cars, my expectations were high. I don’t understand much about cars I confess, but a woman’s view was required and I kind of knew I would have loads of fun. My favourite type of car is a combination of SUV and sports car. And what did I get? A Porsche Cayenne S E-hybrid, oh yeah! The car that combines sportive driving, great interiors and amazing features with the size and comfort of an SUV with a plus, it’s environment friendly! My weekend was going to be amazing! THURSDAY The experience started around noon (so basically I had an extended weekend with the car). After one hour talking to Taher Ali, marketing manager of Porsche Centre Bahrain, and experimenting and learning everything about the car, the machine was finally mine! I got a full lesson before hitting the roads, so I felt really prepared to deal with the number of buttons in front of me. The hybrid system is an intelligent technology
56 June 2015
created by the German company. It combines a regular combustion-engine with battery power, the necessary transition to embrace the car of the future. We have to make our lives more sustainable and making changes in all the areas that we can is a good start. I drove back to the office and I could see the cars in front of me were getting out of the way
so I could pass (maybe it was my imagination, but I was really happy with it). Went to school to pick up my daughter and the first thing she noticed was the red interior. By the way, the perfect finishing touches in this car are one of my favourite features. The rouge interior grabs your attention and at first I thought I wouldn’t like it, but after a while, I was in love. www.womanthismonth.com
The beautiful stitching and soft leather give the perfect wow effect and we were tempted to spend the night in the car but thought that would be a bit much! FRIDAY With the start of the weekend, it was time to enjoy the car while going about my everyday tasks but first I decided to check out a bit of essential vehicle information. The new Cayenne can be found in five versions, not only the hybrid but all the others have been improved with more power and torque and lower fuel consumption. I also discovered that the car parked in my garage is the world’s first plug-in hybrid in the premium SUV segment. Actually, the world's first hybrid vehicle also came from Porsche. The 1899 Lohner-Porsche, designed by Ferdinand Porsche, combined battery-electric drive with a combustion engine. The Cayenne’s high-voltage battery enables it to be charged both at a mains supply and during your journey and while the idea of having a hybrid car may sound complicated, it’s truly fun! The car always starts using battery power and while driving you can transfer energy back to the battery using the traction of the wheels while braking (called regenerative braking) or by changing to e-charge mode, to use the combustion engine to create energy to the battery. This means that you can always charge the battery while driving without having to use the power source. My first test then was to check out the difference in torque between using the battery and the engine. To my surprise I couldn’t notice
any change in performance, the car responded equally as well when using the battery. The day went on with lunch, cover shoot (yeah, I drove the Cayenne S E-Hybrid to meet Karima Sharabi, our cover star this month, to have her pictures done), dinner and the day ended with a quiet evening at home. SATURDAY My last 24 hours with the Cayenne and I wanted to make the most of it! A sunny day, it was perfect for a long drive. Bahrain is a small country, but its roads can get busy during the week, so the weekend was the ideal time to put the car through its paces. Two of the features I really liked were the on-board computers. Having the option of putting a city map right in front of you (in the
panel behind the driving wheel) was awesome! The other computer could be set to show all sorts of car performance factors, my favourite was the one showing exactly which system was being used while driving. You could actually see that when using the brakes, energy was being created and sent to the battery. Another thing that scored major points for me was how safe and in control of the car I felt while driving. It responds really well to your driving decisions which makes the experience really enjoyable. Looking for more information, I found the Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid has a Porsche Stability Management with vacuum brake booster, brake assist, multi-collision brake and electric parking brake. So it is designed to respond. The AC works wonders! The car is refreshed in seconds and the new Porsche Cayenne comes with optional seat ventilation, which is perfect for the weather in the Middle East. The day ended with a nice ride around Amwaj for the shoot enjoying the envious glances of other drivers. SUNDAY The alarm clock tells me it’s time to return the car. I drive to the Porsche Centre Bahrain enjoying the last kilometres and thinking of the whole experience. My final thoughts go to the fact that the Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid is a perfect car for both men and women. It has all the features women look for, comfort, design and space. And men will enjoy the car’s performance, design and power. Looking for a complete luxury vehicle? I believe you’ll find all you’re looking for in this beautiful and practical car. The starting price is BD32,800. Enjoy the Ramadan deals to be the proud owner of a Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid! Call 17 459-911.

REBIRTH OF A CLASSIC The highly anticipated third-generation Audi TT Coupé has been causing quite a stir among motoring enthusiasts. Apple Sharma put it to the test to see what the hype’s all about!
D
riving a powerful sports car always fills me with an adrenaline rush, so when I was asked to test the new Audi TT Coupé, I was both excited and a tad nervous at the same time. Anticipation gave me butterflies in my stomach; it felt like going on a first date and a blind one at that! First impressions are very important and one look at this compact little beauty had my heart fluttering, I couldn’t wait to see how my date would unfold. When the first TT made its debut in the mid-1990s, it made a statement with its design elements and precision engineering. The second-generation TT showed improvements but this third-generation TT ticks all the boxes. Imagine meeting your first love after years and being swept off your feet again. This all-new Audi TT Coupé is lighter, more powerful, stylish and prettier than its predecessor. One of the first things I noticed was the seating. It’s slightly higher than your typical sports car, making it easier to step in and out modestly in a dress. It also gives you better visibility, no craning your neck like a giraffe in a tight spot. The boot space is ample for a small trolley bag and folding down the back seats will make enough space for your monthly grocery shopping. However, the rear seats might get a little claustrophobic for your travelling companions unless they’re vertically challenged (making it perfect for small children) – well, it is a sports car, after all! I was even more impressed with the interior, which is elegant yet sporty. Every element is clearly structured and the round air vents, a TT characteristic, look like jet engines, bringing back memories of my flying days. There’s no clutter on the dashboard, no central display,
58 June 2015
with everything simplified and literally at the tip of your fingers. Pretty much anything that needs a display is handled by the uber-cool Audi virtual cockpit – a digital instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch, high-resolution screen producing brilliantly sharp images and displaying information, from navigation arrows and dynamic animations to the graphics for the assistance systems. Another fantastic feature is the new Multi Media Interface (MMI) system of which the touch-pad interface was one of my favourites and can also be operated from the steering wheel. It’s intelligent, easy-to-use and designed to be distraction-free as nearly all frequently used functions can be reached with just a few clicks, right in front of you. I have a confession to make - I like driving fast so I put my foot down and let the car do the talking! It handles beautifully and the power steering is very comfortable to use. It took me a little while to get used to the power (all of two minutes, if that) but as I sped along, my confidence grew in listening to my ‘chill’ radio station (blaring from the Bang & Olufsen speakers) at high speed with an occasional phone call (on Bluetooth, of course), whilst being in complete control. This takes multi-tasking to whole different level.
Now, let me explain what takes this beauty from a purring kitten to a roaring lion. The new Audi TT family offers two versions of the 2.0 TFSI model. The two-litre engine produces 230hp in the Audi TT 45 TFSI and 286hp in the TTS. In the Audi TT, the 45 TFSI produces a constant 370Nm of torque between 1,600 and 4,300rpm. With the six-speed S tronic transmission and front-wheel drive, the coupé accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds with a top speed of 250km/h – oh yes, it’s rapid! You can also choose whether the accelerator, sound actuator and steering boost should be active in options from comfort to efficiency mode, at the push of a button. If an MMI navigation system is on board, a fifth individual mode is added. All versions come with a generous list of standard equipment, including electrically adjustable sport seats with integrated head restraints, six airbags, deluxe automatic air conditioning and interior lighting package, park assist system, convenience key, 18-inch lightweight wheels, MMI radio and the list goes on… My verdict - the first date was a success and there is a definite potential for romance there! The all-new Audi TT Coupé is available at Audi Centre Bahrain in Sitra with a starting price of BD18,990. Call 17 459-933. www.womanthismonth.com

Pick your Palette We’ve all had moments when we picked up an interior design magazine and sighed over the beautiful pictures, wondering how simple colours can add magic to a room. Ankita Mamgain takes you over the essentials of painting interiors.
C
olours are magical and tend to have their own mystical energy. They add drama, set mood and can affect your overall wellbeing. How welcoming or not a room, house or even an office is, is largely related to the play of hues in it. The good news is, this energy, if not desired, can be changed with the stroke of a brush. Paint can make a statement with splashes of bold colour or it can be a soft backdrop to a more muted interior. Either way, painting is one of the easiest and least expensive tools in the interior design world that can truly add soul to any space. The marketplace offers so many options of products, finishes, designs, textures, not to forget shades, that the sheer choice can be overwhelming and can even lead to some serious misjudgements. So it’s essential to start with a little homework on the subject, and that’s where, hopefully, we can help. PREPARATION IS KEY Seemingly easy, painting your home, especially if you already live in it, can be a daunting task. However with the right
60 June 2015
planning this process can be rendered completely hassle free. • Assign a budget to the task and select your products accordingly. Then calculate the quantity of paint required as per your needs. • Choose a colour scheme for each room and make your selection of shades, patterns and textures. It’s always better to do a quick online search before you head out to meet a professional in this regard, then you will have some idea of what you are looking for. • Once you decide on the mood you are seeking, go through the paint samples that fit your palette. Make sure to get samples from a few suppliers so you can see which ones give a greater variety of shades. Many companies, with their qualified consultants, can even help you achieve the right combination for each room before you spend anything on the supplies. So enquire if the paint company provides such services. • When starting out with the job itself, remember it’s a lot easier to paint if
nothing’s in your way; so empty the room out or at least as much as possible. When painting the living room, move large furniture pieces to the centre and cover with cloth or plastic. • Clean before you start with the first coat of paint. You may not see it but there is buildup on the walls of dirt, dust and oils from your hands. Removing all this will allow the paint to adhere to the walls. Fill in any nail holes or cracks. You might also want to cover the floor with newspapers, or old cloth. • Test the paint colour by buying a sample and painting a square on the wall. Allow it to dry and observe it in all lighting conditions. • Another point to remember is the finish; it’s not just the colour alone that matters but the finish or sheen as well. High gloss paint finishes are durable and easier to clean, but highlight imperfections in your walls. Alternatively a flat paint finish will hide flaws but is more susceptible to damage. In most instances, an eggshell finish is the best option. www.womanthismonth.com
EACH SPACE HAS A UNIQUE PERSONALITY The idea may be to make each corner unique but remember to maintain an overall harmony of colour in the house unless the objective is to shock, in which case the sky’s the limit to your imagination. In recent years, neutral colours have become a real trend in bedroom arrangement. Bright or matt shades of cream, beige and brown are very popular. They are a good choice for bedrooms especially because they can be successfully combined with almost any other colour. Other popular choices are softer shades of blue, lavender, green tones or even pink tones for children’s rooms if you want to create a relaxing and calm environment. For living rooms you can go for something fun and fresh, combining earthy tones or creating drama with vibrant complementary hues. The kitchen is where a lot of action is, so keep in mind the durability of the paint type. Investing a few extra dinars here will really go a long way. As far as the colours are concerned white, grey, blue, red, yellow and green really shine. Each of these shades can do something different, but they all help create a warm and welcoming space. Keep in mind that colours can also make www.womanthismonth.com
a place look larger or smaller. Unifying a small area with one colour and blending the dimensions can visually magnify it a little. A popular choice for small spaces is white or its warm or cold variants as they reflect light and lead to the illusion of ‘no walls’ but many designers are currently opting for darker shades from the cooler palette such as blues and greens. ASK THE EXPERTS The qualified technical team at Berger Paints can come to your rescue if you are finding it difficult to get started on your paint project. They recce the area and can offer bespoke solutions for your specific requirements. So whether you are living seaside or in a city condo, they help you zero down on not just the colour combinations but the type of paint, finishes and textures that’ll best suit your needs. The company recently introduced a new product called Crystal and is particularly proud of it. This unique water-based interior paint is stain resistant and 99.99 per cent anti-fungal making it a great choice for homes with small kids or even places such as restaurants and hospitals where high hygiene standards need to be maintained.

TAKE A SEAT Clever seating can add focus to any space, welcoming visitors and transforming your house into a home. The pieces in this selection from Moroso combine both comfort and style for a look that’s individual and welcoming. DIATOM BY ROSS LOVEGROVE Diatom, a stackable aluminium chair, takes its shape from the frustum of a diatom, this primordial single-cell organism with silica skeleton found in bodies of water the world over. Refined ornamental geometry in three-dimensions, a marvel of structure devised from exploring the rules of mathematics that dictate the vegetative development of living organisms. Production adopts a technology developed in the automotive sector to reduce both the weight and the production cost of the seats; die-cast aluminium sheeting ensures the lightest weight and eliminates the need for steel while ensuring equivalent levels of performance.
GENTRY The new sofa designed by Patricia Urquiola fosters a return to industrial design’s capacity for technical and aesthetic designing of products destined for the retail market. The collection’s strength is its almost basic simplicity which imbues it with character and modernity yet, at the same time, its silhouette has the added attractively graceful touch of a gentle arch in the frame to ensure the right structural balance of solids and voids. With large, soft cushions to make it exceptionally comfortable, Gentry sofa’s discreet personality enables it to perfectly blend into any interior décor or setting. The steel frame is enveloped in moulded polyurethane foam and it is vailable in a choice of leather, woven fabric or chunky knitted fabric upholstery.
MASSAS Moroso, Asymmetric, Sofa, System, Adorably, Stitched (Massas) designed by Patricia Urquiola, is a modular sofa system with the addition of a standard armchair, small armchair and small table. The shape appears compact and controlled, yet well-defined cuts and lines map out the fabric asymmetrically. Visible raised stitching, like tacking, runs around the perimeter until deconstructing its linear aesthetic. The structure is in polyurethane foam and the particularly soft upholstery is the product of a bonded combination of fabric and wadding.

REDONDO Redondo is a set of seating elements designed by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso. Its distinctive theme is roundness, and indeed the name in Spanish means “round”. The system comprises a sofa and two snug armchairs that evoke an almost "protective" intimacy. The line and form of the structure are reminiscent of a balloon glass consisting of two adjoining volumes that together form a cocooning seat, like a shell.

Ramadan With Your Kids With the Holy Month of Ramadan approaching and many schools closing for the summer break Ghada Salem has some ideas and activities to do with your kids to beat the heat and teach them about Bahrain’s culture and traditions. SIGHT THE MOON Try to see the moon (which is how the start of Ramadan is calculated) from an elevated location in your neighbourhood. You can give your kids binoculars so they can detect it more clearly.
OREO MOON CHART This is an interesting, educational and tasty activity for kids over six years old. The moon has phases which means it looks a little different to us each night during its one-month orbit of our planet. So get a pack Oreo cookies and re-create its phases with the filling. It will be fun!
RAMADAN ADVENT CALENDAR Using recycled paper, old jewellery boxes or colourful papers and a cardboard box, design an advent calendar for the 30 days of Ramadan. Inside each day’s pocket place a good deed note for children to do. For example: Day1: Share food with the needy; Day2: Donate a toy to an orphanage or collect coins from around the house, or from your allowance, and buy a toy or food and give it to a needy person at Eid. Day3: Return someone's shopping cart at the grocery store;
66 June 2015
MAKE A LANTERN Take a piece of paper and fold in half lengthwise. After, make some cuts all along the folded length, cut half to two-thirds of the way to the other side. Open your card and roll making a tube shape, use tape to stick the sides together. You can finish your lantern by making a handle with left over paper. This can be a fun group activity. Get a few kids to make paper lanterns to decorate the club house or maybe the TV room in your home.
Day4: Cook or buy someone their Iftar meal – it would be great if this is done for workers and security in your neighbourhood; Day5: Write down something you are grateful for today; Day6: Smile at everyone today; Day7: Write a "Thank you" letter to your teacher today; Day8: Give cold bottles of water to workers; Day9: Write a few notes saying "I hope you have a great day" and pass them out at school; Day10: Make a list "10 reasons I love you" and give it to your mum and dad.
JOIN A GERGOAN PARTY This is a traditional Bahraini celebration. Mums In Bahrain organises a party where its members get dressed up, each in their own traditional clothes, to celebrate a multicultural taste of Ramadan, with fun kids’ activities and a raffle draw. There is also one at City Centre Bahrain that usually takes place on day 14 and 15 of Ramadan. The Bottom Line on Babies’ Bottoms Most babies get nappy rash at one time or another. If your baby falls victim, don’t worry, it doesn’t mean you’re a bad parent. Dr Jinan Harith Darwish sheds some light on the subject. What is nappy rash? Nappy rash is dermatitis confined to the area covered by the nappy. It is most commonly characterised by confluent redness of the convex surfaces of the buttocks, the areas of skin in closest contact with the nappy, and it spares the groin folds. What causes nappy rash? Given that babies' bottoms spend an average of two, or more, years encased in nappies, it’s no wonder that nappy dermatitis is such a common problem. Not putting a nappy on your baby will help him/her stay dry and avoid contact with faeces or urine. It is usually most convenient to leave the nappy off when the baby is asleep. You can lay him/her on an absorbent towel or somewhere where you can easily manage any soiling or wetting. The main cause of nappy rash is the exposure of a baby’s delicate skin to human waste products that produce ammonia if the nappy is not changed for a length of time. Sometimes the friction of the nappy against a baby's sensitive skin or even traces of detergent left in washable nappies can be enough to lead to a rash.
It's important to wash the baby's bottom every time you change them. Avoid using wipes as they dry the skin and sting. If your baby has only wet his/her nappy, use warm water. If the baby has dirtied the nappy, use a little sensitive skin baby soap and always rinse in warm water to make sure there is no soap left on the baby's skin. How to tell the difference between nappy rashes? An ordinary nappy rash is very red, but not bright red. The baby feels well in general,
only feeling a sting when they're wet or soil themselves. The redness does not reach into the folds of the skin and disappears after a few days of giving their bottom some air, using zinc oxide cream and frequently changing nappies. A fungal infection is bright red. Check if your baby's skin folds are red as well. The fungus can grow as the damp conditions are right. There may be spots further out on the buttocks. A fungal infection can be unpleasant for the baby because it can sting the skin especially when the baby wets or dirties its nappy. A bright red, very warm and swollen rash may be caused by a bacterial infection. The baby may be irritable and have a fever. If so, contact your doctor. Other skin conditions, such as infantile eczema, will exacerbate your child's nappy rash. What does medical evidence say? The evidence supports frequent nappy changes, use of super absorbent nappies and protection of the perineal skin with a product containing petrolatum and/ or zinc oxide.

SLEEP LIKE A BABY If you start your day feeling tired, feel sleepy all day, snore loudly or wake up frequently at night for no reason, you may be suffering from obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Loud snoring, choking during sleep or daytime sleepiness could be a symptom of OSA.
P
atients with sleep apnoea have a narrow air passage surrounded by flabby soft tissues. While breathing, as the air passes through the narrow air passage, the flabby tissue tends to get sucked in and causes an obstruction in breathing. This leads to a ‘choking spell’ causing the sufferer to jerk awake, as the survival mechanism kicks in. Upon awakening, the soft tissues become taut again and the airway opens up. Such multiple awakenings make the patient feel tired and sleepy throughout the day despite a good eight hours of sleep. Sufferers can doze off while driving, during meetings or at work and Dr Avneesh Kumar. studies have shown that OSA can also lead to various heart ailments such as hypertension and arrhythmias. “At Royal Bahrain Hospital (RBH), we comprehensively diagnose and manage these patients,” says specialist ear, nose and throat surgeon Dr Avneesh Kumar. “The patients go through a detailed check-up which includes assessment of the upper airway followed by a full-night sleep study. Once diagnosed, the patient undergoes a further in-lab sleep study called a Titration Study.” RBH offers a variety of medical and surgical treatments for patients suffering from OSA and has successfully treated a number of patients over the last four years. The Sun: Severe or Saviour?
With the nip in the air long gone, islanders are getting ready to brave the summer sun. Should beachcombers stroll the sands with carefree abandon or must we beware the effects of the scorch? Behnaz Sanjana finds out.
P
ublic messages with regards to protecting oneself from the sun have been doing the rounds lately, and with good reason. We’ve heard of the horrors of too much sun exposure - wrinkles, freckles, sun spots and alarmingly, skin cancer. So we slather on the sunscreen, but then are we blocking out the life-essential Vitamin D? Stay out of the sun or get some sun; what’s the right thing to do? Experts say it’s a delicate balancing act between adequate protection from and prudent exposure to the sun.
Those with a family history of skin cancer or who spend long hours in the sun or who sunburn easily must be wary too. And don’t forget to shade your eyes. “Although the eyelid is designed to protect the eye, its skin is exceedingly thin and contains many fragile tissues that may be injured by UV light. Inside the eye, the lens and the cornea filter UV rays, but by doing so for many years, they may become damaged,” Dr Mehta says. So it makes sense to invest in a good pair of UV protective sunglasses for the outdoors.
SKIN CANCER FACTS Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells, caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds. It is the most common form of cancer in the US and has increased incidence in Bahrain as well. There are different types of skin cancers; the deadliest one being melanoma. “Everyone should practice safety in the sun, but some of us who are fair-skinned and have light eyes and hair must be especially cautious,” says dermatologist Dr Bhartendu Mehta of the American Mission Hospital.
CATCH AND PREVENT Dr Anjali Palav, specialist dermatologist at the Bahrain Specialist Hospital, advocates examining your skin under bright light on a regular basis. Use a handheld mirror or ask a family member to help you in examination. Learn to spot the early warning signs; skin cancer can be cured if it's found and treated early. “Be especially suspicious of a new mole, any mole which is changing in size or shape or any red scaly spot,” she advises. For those who enjoy sporting a ‘healthy’ tan, listen up. Dr Anjali says: “The high-pressure
70 June 2015
sunlamps used in tanning salons emit doses of UVA and UVB as much as 12 times that of the sun. This exposure will damage the skin’s cellular DNA which leads to mutations and skin cancers.” www.womanthismonth.com
Everyone should practice safety in the sun, but some of us who are fairskinned and have light eyes and hair must be especially cautious So stay away from artificial tanning and layer up on the SPF. But which sunscreen is the right one? “A broad spectrum sunscreen for protection of both UVA and UVB rays is important for all people for daily use. Select SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15-30 sunscreen for regular use. Higher SPF does not necessarily give more protection,” says Dr Anjali. A liberal use of sunscreen on exposed body parts is essential. One ounce (5-6 teaspoons) of sunscreen, or roughly one palmful of sunscreen reapplied every two hours is what our expert recommends. And here’s why you must not skimp on sunscreen. “Using a thin layer only provides the square root of the SPF. For example, a thin layer of SPF 30 sunscreen only provides an effective SPF of 5.5,” warns Dr Anjali. Parents must ensure their children are protected from sunburn, as many studies have observed that frequent sunburn in childhood is associated with increased risk of skin cancers in adult life. Besides sunscreen, Dr Anjali gives us essential pointers on sun safety. “One should limit exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays, especially between 10am and 4pm, when the sun's rays are strongest. Wear a hat and sunglasses, and cover up with clothing,” she says. D IS FOR DEFICIENCY The other end of the skin cancer spectrum is a deficiency of Vitamin D, caused by inadequate sun exposure. Dr Babu Ramchandran of the www.womanthismonth.com
American Mission Hospital, Amwaj, says that Vitamin D deficiency is a highly prevalent condition in around 30 to 50 per cent of the general population, more so in the elderly, women of child bearing age and infants. The sun’s rays interact with our skin to produce Vitamin D that helps the body absorb calcium, thereby contributing towards bone and muscle health. The deficiency of this ‘sunshine vitamin’ causes rickets, a bone-related condition, in children as well as bone pain and muscle weakness. It also makes you feel blue more often than normal and puts you at risk for osteoporosis. Dr Babu observes that it is only in the last five to six years that he has seen people being investigated for Vitamin D deficiency and its notably high prevalence in the population. “The increasing incidence of Vitamin D deficiency cases may be due to the present lifestyle worldwide, where people have limited exposure to sunlight,” he says. There are steps you can take, besides a healthy dose of early morning sunshine to avoid or set right a Vitamin D deficiency. Eggs, fish liver oils such as cod liver oil and fatty fish – herring, catfish, salmon, mackerel etc. are good sources of Vitamin D. Stocking
up on fortified milk products and cereals can also help. In cases of Vitamin D deficiency, the health care provider may put the person on Vitamin D supplements or injections. June 2015

In addition to some of Italy’s best-preserved and most revealing Roman remains, there is the amazing volcanic Campi Flegrei area to the northwest. Inland Campania remains untouched by tourist activity for the most part, though the giant palace and gardens of Caserta are worth Campania-Italy visiting. Benevento, an old stop on the Roman route to Brindisi, has a flavour that’s quite distinct from the coastal regions. CHEF’S SPECIAL Bahrain is filled with foodies and with some specialised culinary institutes, islanders can even learn to cook exquisite dishes from the experts.
F
or those who thought the only gateway to the hospitality industry was through study abroad, here’s some good news. Bahrain Institute of Hospitality and Retail (BIHR) and HTMi (Hotel and Tourism Management Institute) have come together to introduce Bahrain’s first ever Swiss hospitality diploma programme. At the helm of the culinary department is chef Alain Caminade, who brings his wealth of knowledge and experience to BIHR’s kitchen. He graduated from the Occitania Chef’s School in France and has worked for over three decades across the world, picking up skills from the various countries he has resided in. He’s been enjoying his current stop over in Bahrain for the past 12 years. Chef Alain combines both nouvelle and traditional French cuisine, and his repertoire extends from delicious desserts to sophisticated main course dishes. He specialises in the flavours of the French Riviera and Tuscany. “I focus essentially in using seasonal ingredients in my cooking, and I am delighted that the lovely Kingdom of Bahrain has an abundance to offer of these,” he says.

La Dolce Vita This month our travel section takes you on a journey through Bella Italia, but if you can’t make the trip you can still get the vibe in your own kitchen with these recipes from Lazio and Lombardy.
LOMBARDY
Coming from the north of the country, the cuisine of the Lombard region has more in common with that of its Austrian neighbour than the rest of Italy. Dishes are often rice or maize based and risotto is a regional favourite. The cuisine is also much more meat rich than in the central and southern regions but, in true Italian style, dishes always encourage the big-table family dining style which is still so popular across the country.
LAZIO
The hills of this region are rich and fertile making it ideal for growing the vegetables which make up a good part of the area’s cuisine. Olive oil and garlic also figure strongly as does chunky pasta. The popular arrabbiata sauce also comes from Lazio, the name means angry and is derived from the flakes of hot pepperoncino it contains.
SPAGHETTI CARBONARA
True comfort food loved the world over and synonymous with this region of Italy, this dish is ridiculously easy to cook and needs only a handful of ingredients to create a meal which is both tasty and impressive. Ingredients • 250g spaghetti • 2 large eggs • Approx 100g Parmesan grated • 4 slices beef bacon, diced • 4 cloves garlic, minced • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste • 2tbsp fresh parsley leaves chopped
www.womanthismonth.com
Method • Cook the pasta in boiling salted water. Drain well and keep around 150ml of the water. • Whisk together the eggs and Parmesan and set aside. • Fry the bacon until crisp, reserve the excess fat, stir in the garlic and reduce the heat, at this stage you can add some chopped onions if desired. • Quickly stir in the pasta and egg mixture, season to taste and add the reserved water a little at a time until you reach your favoured consistency – you can substitute white grape if preferred. • Serve immediately, garnished with parsley, if desired.
OSSOBUCO
Possibly one of the region’s most famous dishes is a Milanese speciality of crosscut veal shanks braised with vegetables, white grape and broth. Done well, the meat, though a cheap cut which is prone to toughness, should be tender enough to simply fall off the bone and you should be able to scoop the marrow from the middle. Ingredients • 1.5kg veal shanks • 2tbsp flour • 2 onions, finely chopped • 1 large carrot, peeled and finely chopped • 2 celery sticks, finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 250ml beef stock (you can use a stock cube) • 250ml white grape (optional but does add flavour)
• Large can of chopped tomatoes • 1 tbsp olive oil • Salt and pepper to taste Method • Dust the veal shanks lightly with flour, heat the oil in a large pan, add the veal and brown on both sides. Remove the veal from the pan and keep warm. • Add garlic and onions to the pan and cook until the onions are soft, return the veal to the pan, add in the vegetables and grape and simmer for 10 minutes. • Add the tomatoes and beef stock, cover and simmer over a low heat for around an hour and a half basting the meat regularly. • Top with gremolata made by combining parsley, lemon rind and garlic. Capricorn Dec 22 – Jan 20
If some of you are feeling a little tired or run down then maybe you should think about grabbing a break away. Although you might be too proud to admit it, the heavy demands of a taxing job have really taken their toll on you recently and you need some time to recharge the very run down batteries! Speak to your partner as you will find him or her quite receptive to the idea.
Gemini May 22 – Jun 21
Aquarius Jan 21 – Feb 19
Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 23
Pisces Feb 20 – Mar 20
Difficult times both at home and in the work place have forced you to dig deeply in your reserves of strength recently. However, you have managed to come through to the other side and as you look back upon your achievements this month it will be with a sense of satisfaction and relief. You have had to negotiate bitterness and a lack of appreciation from your superiors as far as your job is concerned. Many of you are about to go on a journey of rediscovery this month and what you find at the end of it may redefine the rest of your life. The loss of a loved one, the break-up of a relationship or perhaps the realisation of your own ill health could all be factors that contribute towards this major internal shift but whatever the reason, the eventual outcome will be a good one for you.
Leo Jul 24 – Aug 23
A loved one you have lost touch with recently following an ill-fated trip or excursion will be in your thoughts this month, driving you towards paying them a visit. However, what you discover when you do seek him or her out is not going to be what you had expected and you will be hard pressed to conceal your sadness when the truth of their situation is realised. It will put life into perspective for you.
Virgo Aug 24 – Sept 23
Many of you could be feeling neglected in a relationship this month but rather than suffer in silence, you need to sit your partner down and voice your concerns directly. It’s no good hoping that matters will right themselves. On the work front, a colleague could approach you for support in a course of action that is in direct opposition to a senior member of staff, think carefully about what you decide to do.
78 June 2015
June will see you getting involved in a friend’s family event that could end up taking over more of your life than you would like. Maybe next time you’ll think twice before being overly generous in your intentions. On the relationship front you will be encouraged by a partner’s efforts in trying to make more time for you after you made it clear that you were not happy with the distance that had grown between you.
Libra Sept 24 – Oct 23
Certain plans that you made back at the start of the year may not be unfolding quite as you would have wanted and this June you will be forced to revaluate your situation and consider an alternative path of action concerning a career move. Although you may feel like all your efforts up until now have been in vain, try to be courageous and above all else, sensibly calm as you seek out a solution.
Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 22
Money could be a concern for you this month following some unforeseen expenditure during the early part of the year. On the work front you could have the luxury of deliberating over two job offers but you should not rush into any decision. Both hold opportunity and the scope to progress but you need to make certain you choose the one that will satisfy you rather than just looking at the financial benefits.
Sagittarius Nov 23 – Dec 21
June is going to be all about new beginnings and exciting opportunities for many of you – especially where romance is concerned. Those of you currently involved in a new relationship will discover that things develop quite quickly this month and what started out as a fairly casual “wait and see” affair will soon take on a much more meaningful position in your life.
You may find yourself coming in for a lot of criticism from a loved one this month as your sometimes cool and analytical approach to even the most sensitive issues in life finally forces someone close to you to snap! Whilst I’m not suggesting for one minute that you undergo a complete personality change, it might be an idea for you to try and be a little more considerate when faced with emotional issues.
Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20
Those of you who may be working away from home could find yourself feeling homesick – so much so that you will start to consider whether it is time to return to the fold and more familiar territory once again. Remember that life isn’t about the weight of gold in your pocket or the balance in your bank account so if you need to take a drop in income to feel personally satisfied then do it.
Taurus Apr 21 – May 21
If you feel like the world has been against you recently then you will be relieved to know that things will appear to ease up this month as you manage to pinpoint the root cause of your anxieties and consequently address them. Don’t be afraid to speak your mind. On the romantic front a long planned date with someone you are quite keen on finally gets to happen this June. www.womanthismonth.com
