eDitor’s NOTE

asn’t it been a busy few months for the fashion forward — trying to catch up with the fashion weeks, establishing favourite styles from the previous ones and judging red carpet looks? Our fashion and beauty editor, Fernanda, had shifted into overdrive to give you a roundup of SS14’s hottest trends. And it’s here, ladies — your trend bible for the months to come. From origami-inspired designs to the return of sheer and floral elements, this summer is going to be an exciting journey for the daring amongst us. She also tackles beauty queries, like how to get rid of puffy eyes, in addition to compiling the make-up and hair trends of the season. Speaking of bold women, Simi got to speak to two brave women who broke the norm with their career choices. Meet Danielle Hughes and Vanessa Umba in our interview pages. To wind up our three-month health and fitness campaign, we have a special feature by Natasha Bird on three superwomen and our contributor, Behnaz, dives into the world of hydrotherapy. In the parenting section, Dr Clare discusses the importance of babies’ babble and Dr Jinan tells us how to introduce new foods to young children. For the house proud, we tell you how to build the perfect study and give you the best storage solutions to maximise the limited space in rented apartments. The team at Woman This Month wish all our readers a happy International Women’s Day.

void obvious choices by picking something less common yet equally dashing — like the jumpsuit. The one-piece outfit, which has found its way back into the fashion scene, suits most body types. Opt for ones that boast different shades on the top and bottom, or for those with a pattern on either half. These are more fun and give the impression of a two-piece ensemble. Singlecoloured jumpsuits work as a long dress, which is ideal if you want to stretch your figure.

Gifts galore I shall plead guilty as one of those people who don’t plan in advance for any celebration. So as usual I was stuck for gift ideas…again! Thankfully, I came across your gift guide and I picked up a little something from Montblanc for mon beau! And he loved it…so thank you. And guess what! I got a little something too! In other news, we’re planning a trip to Italy… could you suggest an outfit selection please? CJ

Celebrity watch I’m a self-proclaimed bookworm. It Stuck in a weather that demands layers, I’m glad to see the stars wearing simple outfits. I can’t wait to wear strappy sandals like Michelle Williams’. It’s almost like I can’t remember the last time I went out baring my legs. All I want is for this season to pass so I can head back to the beach and enjoy the sun. Yes, sun! How else can I get make the pasty skin go away? I’ve been on the lookout for a sheer hem like in May Adams’ dress. Could you just an outlet around town that might have it at an affordable price? Nia

Denims; not dungarees I love your fashion pages and look forward to finding out the new trends in your upcoming issue. But I have to say I was shocked to see overalls in your magazine! I know it’s supposed to be the new fad, but as someone who was more than happy to see this trend come and go…I’m terrified to see it has come back to haunt me and every one who can’t find the beauty in it. I just wish people would stick to jumpsuits and steer away from this style. Roma

Standing out My job requires me to dress up very often, but Bahrain is too small a country to repeat outfits, especially when you’re seeing the same people. That’s why I love to go through your GTL pages. Last month helped me figure out what to mix and match for cocktail events. It would be really helpful if you could tackle how to repeat blazers without being too obvious. Also, how can I protect my accessories without taking up too much space? Jen

predictable trend, flowers are an inspiration for this year’s spring/summer collections. The natural element is almost mandatory this time of the year. Few changes here and there make all the difference. Many brands have decided to add a jungle scene into the mix with foliage, leopards and zebras reigning over the current prints. The floral concept has expanded with the introduction of animal skin patterns. Some illustrations are done so well; you feel that they belong together. Blumarine and L’Wren Scott went towards the girly side with soft hues and the flower and butterfly duo. The tropical vibe took over the catwalk at Just Cavalli. Girls, get savage!

he Japanese art of folding paper, commonly known as origami, has been the inspiration for several designers this year. A careful tuck here and there has resulted in the intricately structured pieces that we spotted at shows everywhere. Mainly appearing in solid and light neutral colours, the focus remains on the complexity of the tailoring. Pieces like skirts and tops step out of the ‘basics’ category with protruding fabrics and pop-up ruffles. The art of visualising the final result requires a detailed understanding of materials and sewing techniques. This expertise was portrayed by designers like Viktor & Rolf and Sonia Rykiel. Giambattista Valli and Etro used it as a special detail in their outfits. Will you be wrapping yourself creatively in this trend?

his is a spin-off of the origami trend. The difference is that it features consistency and similarity in texture. The key to perfect pleats, after all, is the repetition of creases of the same size. What used to be reserved for schoolgirl uniforms, pleats got a makeover a while ago by making appearances in ladies’ everyday wear collections. Whether it is a mini, A-line or long skirt, pleats are back where they should be — in vogue! Christopher Kane and Christian Dior used it in flowing sheer skirts. Victoria Beckham went subtle (predictably so) and used pleats as an eye-catching detail in her clean-cut collection.

ealistic prints just weren’t enough this season. Designers have decided that it’s time to take the leap into a threedimensional level. All sorts of appliqué have been stitched onto clothes to create volume and add the element of unusualness to a look. While flowers were a favourite among brands, beads, gems and embroidery also made an appearance. Alberta Ferreti and Jason Wu fixed the appliqué on the upper part of tops and dresses. Marni and Erdem dove deeper in the trend and created an all-round 3D look. If you’d just like to test the waters, opt for tops with beaded collars or pick small accessories which feature such embellishments. Shoes and handbags are a good call.

The idea of showing a little skin is more conceptual rather than sensual. Gauzy fabrics are applied in long sleeves and strategically placed in parts of a top or dress. Panels are the contemporary way to embrace the trend. Striped see-through skirts and tops are a safe bet. et the glow of iron and gold take over your outfit this summer. The metallic trend has been around for a while; it’s time to embrace it for real! Colourful items get an extra layer of shine this season with a metallic tint. Be creative and go beyond the unsurprising element of accessories. The classic metal necklaces and bracelets are now chunkier. Marc by Marc Jacobs and Lanvin tinted their collections in bright colours. et inspired by the big bright sun when you dress up for warmer days. Just as navy blue represents the winter mood, yellow reflects the cheery summer vibe. This vibrant shade easily contrasts with other rainbow colours, spicing up any combination you have in mind. A total look in yellow would only work if you play with different shades. A single yellow piece to brighten up your look is a stylish trick that is worth a try. Ladies with fair skin and blonde hair should avoid the hue from head to toe. That being said, it’s nothing that a good tan couldn’t solve. Most brands picked an intense tone for their collections. They are best paired with printed or washed denims in ivory, natural denim, cranberry, mustard, neon and navy tones. Blazers, chinos, cotton shirts and tees can be found in sorbet hues, like mint, peach and rose. For Her Max’s new womenswear line features a sporty vibe. Influenced by the season’s catwalks, the sporty touch is highlighted in the silhouettes, sleeve details, embellishments, curved hems, jogger shapes and tennis skirts. Finalising the look is the trendy bomber jacket. Monochromatic prints, floral patterns and pastel hues also find a place in the collection. The main materials used are romantic lace in big floral sketches, jacquards, georgettes, satin and droopy jerseys. Eye-catching details, such as PU inserts, appliqués, sheer overlays and fringes, can be spotted as well. Hi-lo hems, peplums and trapeze shapes play with the contours of the apparel, creating volume. Be bold and opt for clashing prints in jumpsuits, maxi dresses, shorts and trousers. The colour palette includes mimosa, hot pink and cobalt blue along with candied pastels. From the

Donna Karan

RUNWAY SS 2014’s beauty trends are brought to you straight from the catwalks in the fashion capitals. Here are our top four picks! Tommy Hilfiger

Phillip Lim

Golden Complexion With the no-make-up effect remaining as popular as ever, the pursuit for flawless skin is still on. However, summer spices it up with tints of bronze. The radiant look by Dolce & Gabbana featured rays of pink. Donna Karan gave it a sexy twist with painted lips while Tommy Hilfiger kept it classic with a laid-back vibe. Prabal Gurung

Ralph Lauren

Dolce & Gabbana

Parting Ways Many designers went with the same idea of fuzz-free hair. Ralph Lauren and Prabal Gurung opted for sleek and straight manes parted at the front or side. While some brands added a bit of wave, a lack of volume at the roots was mandatory. The wet effect as seen in Phillip Lim’s show is refreshing. Note that the fringes are kept in place in this look.

Giorgio Armani

Gucci

Rochas

Shadow All-Round Everyone knows that applying white or pearl eye shadow along the inner corner of the eyes is a trick to conceal dark circles. However, this season brings the new concept of using coloured powder under the eyes. Giorgio Armani opted for green while Rochas went lighter with lilac; both brands used it around the eyes. Gucci played it safe and picked a light golden shade to define the contour of the eyes. The Pre-eminent Liner Albeit distant from the heavy smoky eyes, the black eye liner continues to reign. The line is thinner and subtler, without losing the indefectible feline flicks as seen in Rodarte and Stella McCartney runways. For evenings the line gets a little blurry like Just Cavalli’s statement look.

BEAUTY | advice

Q: I would like to start wearing more prints.

Where do I begin? A: Floral summery pieces are a great way to introduce prints to your wardrobe. Small ones are subtle and easier to mix and match. However, if you are ready to take a risk, choose tops and dresses in bright shades to spice up your look.

Monique Lhuillier

Your Questions Answered

Q: What is the difference between BB, CC and

DD creams? A: They are all facial creams that work as a moisturiser, anti-ageing agent, primer and foundation with SPF protection. However, they have different goals as a beauty product. BB cream is short for blemish and balm. It is good option for young women looking for general protection with the added bonus of inbuilt make-up. CC creams are packed with vitamins C and E, focused on colour correction. This is meant for those ladies with acne-prone, dull skin with prominent dark spots or constant redness. DD creams target wrinkles and other ageing lines.

Q: What is the best way to apply facial cream?

Q: Can I still wear my deep red lipstick in spring/summer?

A: Accordingly to the New York Fashion Week beauty trend, all signals are green! While the shows in Paris, Milan and London showed more natural and rosy lips, the American fashion capital chose bright and deep hues. So, I say you leave it in your handbag!

A: The first step is to wash your face with a product that suits your skin type. Then start with the facial cream. A golden tip is to apply it in small amounts, so your skin doesn’t end up feeling heavy. With the tips of your fingers, start with the middle of the face and slowly massage the cream upwards. On the forehead, put the product between the eyebrows and move it outwards. For the eyes, make circular motions. Move downwards from the upper part of the nose towards the nostrils in the direction of the temples. Apply a bit of cream on the upper lip and move towards to the cheeks. From the lower lip, move to your chin. Don’t forget the neck region; apply the cream moving towards your face.

No More Puffy Eyes!

Estee Lauder

BEAUTY | 5 tips

If you’re tired of looking sleepy or under the weather, you can try these quick fixes to give your eyes a lift.

2.

Magic Veggie

Another well-known solution is chilled cucumber. The vegetable contains enzymes that reduce inflammation, erasing the tired look. The fact that it boasts 90 percent water helps with the cooling and soothing effect. Lean your head back, rest a slice on closed eyes, and relax!

1.

Topical Caffeine

Drinking a double-espresso may wake you up, but it won’t help you get rid of the bags under your eyes. However, applying creams that contain caffeine can reduce the fluid retention that is easily visible due to the thinness of the skin. Caffeine constricts blood vessels and draws water away, making the skin tighter. Steeped tea bags cooled in ice water is a great home remedy known to prevent sun damage in the area as well.

3.

The touch of a finger

A massage is an easy way to stimulate blood circulation around the eyes. Done with the help of a professional or by yourself, lymphatic drainage helps push fluids out of the tissues. Use your ring finger and apply pressure at the inner corners of your eyes. Using gentle circular motions, move to the outer corners. Then, move towards your temples and then downwards along the jaw line.

4.

Body and Soul

This sounds clichéd, but nothing beats a good night’s sleep. Eight hours of shuteye, a healthy diet and plenty of water are the real ingredients to a fit body, flawless skin and positive state of mind.

50 March 2014

5.

Master of Disguise

If the lump is stubborn, then hide it. The best beauty product for this vanishing act is a concealer, which also covers dark circles. With light-reflecting pigments, these are a make-up artist’s favourite tool as they brighten the area and create an illusion of freshness. Find one that perfectly suits your skin tone.

Brussels-born Vanessa Umba is a trailblazer. Gulf Air's first female captain explains how she juggles her flying career alongside her family life, and specifically, her three young children.

Vanessa and her family

been an issue for me. Strangely enough, such working environments tend to foster stronger bonds between women working.

A

s a frequent flyer, perhaps the most difficult moment in Captain Vanessa Umba's day is when she says goodbye to her three young children. Three years ago, Vanessa made history when she was promoted to the position of Captain — the first female in that post in Gulf Air's 62-year history. Vanessa received her pilot training from Sabena Flight Academy in Belgium and then in the USA before starting her flying career with SN Brussels Airlines as first officer. In 2006, she joined Gulf Air as first officer on long haul flights, flying A330 and A340 aircraft. Married to a Bahrain-based French businessman, Vanessa is mother to Océane (six), Laura (four) and Lucas (one). Combining married life with such a demanding job is not easy. Vanessa reveals what it takes to manage everything smoothly. Woman This Month (WTM): What factors influenced your decision to work in the aviation industry? Vanessa Umba (VU): I didn’t have a clear idea about what I might do professionally until I was 16. My father wanted me to become a doctor or a lawyer, but I knew these weren't careers I personally could be passionate about. My school had organised a career day, where students could meet people in a variety of careers that they aspired to. While scanning an extremely long list of professions, I read the word ‘pilot’. Strangely enough, that job had never crossed my mind. But the minute it did, I knew that was what I was meant to be. The rest was easy. I did a two-week glider www.womanthismonth.com

WTM: How difficult is it for a woman to balance a flying career with family life? Did you ever have to compromise on either in order to make the other one work? VU: It is difficult, but not impossible. I feel like I have to deal with two passions at the same time. The key is to be able to differentiate between both worlds. When I am home, I am 100 percent with my family. And the opposite is true when I am flying. XXXXX

Vanessa and other female aviators

WTM: What is the hardest part of your job? VU: Nothing is really hard; each flight is different. A few days ago, I had to wake up in the middle of the night to report for a flight. It was very difficult leaving my sleeping children. However, the moment I arrived at the Gulf Air offices, I got into my flying frame of mind. Later on during the flight, watching the ground from Flight Level 390 just made my day. Flying is truly magical!

programme in Belgium, just to make sure that I’d really like flying. It was amazing. At 18, I joined the Sabena Flight Academy in their cadet programme. Today, more than 10 years later, I’m flying an Airbus 320. WTM: What’s it like being Bahrain’s first and only woman captain? How do your passengers react when they know they’re being flown by a woman? VU: I was the first female captain in Bahrain. When I joined Gulf Air in 2006, I was only one of the two female first officers. Today, there are nine female flight crew members; a majority of them are Bahraini. I’m very proud of them and happy to see things evolving positively for Bahraini women. I must say that Gulf Air management are very supportive of female pilots. The passengers are usually surprised to hear a female voice telling them, “Welcome on board, this is your captain speaking.” However, I usually get an encouraging response, especially from female passengers. WTM: What are the top qualities necessary for a good pilot? VU: A pilot should be knowledgeable, with good decision making skills, leadership abilities and good communication skills. WTM: Have you ever thought of yourself as a woman in a man’s world? VU: Well, isn’t it the men who are in my world? (laughs) As a matter of fact, the minute I started my training as a pilot, I was surrounded by men. But that has never

WTM: What sort of support system do you have at home? VU: My husband Benoît, despite having a successful and demanding career, has always been an outstanding support for me. Of course, living in the Middle East means that life is much easier for us as we have numerous childcare facilities and dedicated professionals to help with our day-to-day needs. Last but not least, support comes from our extended family — my parents, parents-in-law, brothers and sister-in-law. They take turns visiting Bahrain and helping with the children when both my husband and I are out of town. WTM: What is your ultimate ambition in life? VU: I’ve already achieved a lot, don’t you think? (laughs) I’m 33 years old, a Captain with three wonderful kids. On a serious note, I’m trying to complete my Master’s degree in air transport management from City University, London. After that, we’ll see. WTM: How do organisations such as Ninety-Nines help women in aviation? VU: Ninety-Nines is an international association of women pilots which promotes education, scholarships, and mutual support. I’ve been a member of its Arabian section for two years and in that time I’ve met some amazing and inspirational women, all from different origins and backgrounds, but united in the same passion — flying. g March 2014

RIDING THE SKIES by SIMI KAMBOJ

Wing walking isn’t really a conventional career option. But then, Danielle Hughes has always thrived on challenges of the most competitive kind.

D

anielle Hughes is a highflier, and a stylish one at that. Strapped to the wing of a Boeing Stearman plane, this petite lady from Cirencester performs death defying stunts that have enthralled audiences all over the world. As a member of the Breitling Wingwalking team, the only formation flying display team in the world, the 24-year-old carries the torch for girl power in aviation. Danielle has always excelled in the arena of sports and fitness training. At 14, she became the national taekwondo second dan black belt British champion. The most experienced wing walker in the Breitling contingent, Danielle performs at over a 100 air shows worldwide each year, with a stunning display that includes loops, rolls, stall turns and even inverted flight. The spunky Brit gave us a peek into her unconventional job on the sidelines of the Bahrain International Air Show. Woman This Month (WTM): What made you choose this career? Danielle Hughes (DH): I’ve dreamed of being a wing walker since I was six or seven, since the first time my parents took me to watch a local air show in my hometown. I didn’t realise initially that this was an actual job. I thought wing walkers were the daughters of the pilots or the plane owners!

56 March 2014

www.womanthismonth.com

The Breitling contingent

WTM: How did your folks react to these developments? DH: They were really happy and excited for me since they knew how badly I wanted to do this. It was early 2007 and they came to watch me practise at the airfield. Of course, they do worry like all parents worry, but they know that this is my dream come true. WTM: What’s the most difficult part about your job? DH: Well, things can get rough when you’re flying at an altitude of over 1,000 feet. The wind pressure sometimes forces snot or drool to trickle down your face or your hair comes undone during a performance. When it rains, you perform with the raindrops stinging your face. In England, there can be long days when it rains all day and you’ll have to wring the water out of your socks when you’ve finished! WTM: Do you have to undergo special training before you start performing? DH: Fresh recruits are taught all the manoeuvres on the ground. Then we take them through the simple manoeuvres in air, flying at a low speed in the beginning. WTM: What are the physical and mental attributes essential in this job? DH: You need to be physically strong and flexible. You also need to be petite in order to be able to spin around the harness with ease. Most of the girls have a background in gymnastics, martial arts or dance, which means they have strong bodies capable of www.womanthismonth.com

When I came across an advertisement, looking for wing walkers, I promptly phoned them up, appeared in an interview and finally auditioned on the wing. I was 18 when I got the job.

withstanding wind speeds of up to 240km/h and a G force of up to four when they’re performing in air. On the mental front, you have to be sensible, organised and methodical, with a presence of mind. WTM: Which was your most memorable flying performance? DH: Climbing out of the cockpit onto the wing during flight is a tricky manoeuvre. It requires a lot of physical strength. You are working against a 100miles/hour wind speed as the plane moves through the air. The first time I did this, the experience was like climbing a tree in the middle of a hurricane. I was so proud and thrilled that I phoned up my dad after the performance to tell him. WTM: Who are your idols? DH: I’ve always admired women in aviation, especially the fighter pilots. Jules Thurston of the Royal Air Force was one of the best Hawk display pilots ever. She proved that you could be lovely and feminine even when you were flying a fighter aircraft. Then, there was Helen Tempest who performed as a wing walker for almost two decades. I remember watching her perform at air shows when I was a child.

WTM: There must be plenty of men out there who envy your job. DH: I have to admit it’s quite cool to be seen performing stunts mid-air as we do. It’s like being on a rollercoaster and the adrenaline rush is incomparable. Also, it’s nice to be able to represent women in aviation. Meeting people after the show is very heartening. WTM: Exactly how dangerous is your job? DH: See, there’s an element of danger in all flights. The logic is simple: what goes up must come down. Having said that, at Breitling, we have a 100 percent track record for safety. Our founder Vic Norman is a veteran pilot with decades of flying experience behind him. Then, we have fulltime engineers who are proficient at their jobs. So I’d say we’re in very good hands. WTM: What’s your ultimate ambition in life? DH: I want to improve my wing walking technique. I’d like to go between the wings. It’s something I haven’t done so far and takes years to perfect. I got my pilot’s licence in 2008. So hopefully, I will remain associated with flying for a long time to come. I also want to be more proficient in playing the guitar.g March 2014

A Piece of Cake by SIMI KAMBOJ

Banker-turned-baker Mona Shakib believes in the goodness of classic home-style cakes. The proof is the success of her cupcake venture.

B

aking queen Mona Shakib hasn’t looked back since she gave up her real estate career to focus on her passion, baking. Five years ago, Mona started a baking venture from home, making cakes for parties and takeaways. The response was so good that last year, she decided to launch Retro Mama, a cosy cake shop on Reef Island. Mona tells us how important it is to take that leap of faith. Woman This Month (WTM): Tell us about Retro Mama. Mona Shakib (MS): We’re a 1960s style cake shop that offers American-style cupcakes, cookies and pies. We believe in the goodness of traditional, old-school home baking completely done from scratch. I’m a huge fan of real cakes, with butter cream or cream cheese icing, that are fresh and tasty. I tend to stay away from cakes that are purely decorative but don’t taste good. WTM: Did you have any formal training in baking? MS: I am a self-taught baker, just like my

mother, aunts and cousins. I used to help my mother in the kitchen as a girl. I baked my first two-layered cake when I was 12. After that, I was hooked. WTM: What’s special about your products? MS: I believe in using quality ingredients and fresh seasonal produce. For instance, I never source ingredients from the wholesale market, where you can buy in bulk at inexpensive rates. Even if it means I spend more, I shop at supermarkets to support local dairies and local produce. The logic is simple. It’s healthier to eat fresh, seasonal produce, rather than something that has travelled halfway across the world. WTM: Which are your best-selling items? MS: Our menu keeps rotating on a regular basis. We bake using whatever’s fresh in the kitchen and in season, be it strawberries or bananas. Our cupcakes such as Banana Bottom and Southern Red Velvet have been very popular, as are quirky items such as pumpkin cookies.

WTM: Which aspect of your business is most important to you? MS: For us, service is everything. In the evening, you’ll find my husband and even my father here, serving customers and making them feel at home. I guess most of our regular clients know my family by name. Besides, our social media presence is strong, with over 2,600 followers on Instagram. I post updates and images of our products daily so that people know the flavours of the day. WTM: What would be your ultimate dream? MS: I’d love to see Retro Mama become an international name. However, I won’t rush to open more branches at this point as I want to maintain the quality of my products. There are certain practices that we follow, such as baking every day, serving customers ourselves and never refrigerating our cakes. Flavour and quality is the key to the strong relationship with our customers and we would never compromise that. Visit @retromama_bh on Instagram or call 77700222. www.womanthismonth.com

Babbling is Beautiful by DR CLARE BECKETT-MCINROY AND CAROLINE BECKETT

As parents, what can we do to help our children’s linguistic development? We take a look at how they acquire spoken language.

60 March 2014

www.womanthismonth.com

T

he first sounds that a baby makes demonstrate that they need something, such as food, warmth or sleep. At around four to six months, babies begin the practice of babbling. These sounds are the beginnings of spoken language as they gain control of their tongue, lips, palate and vocal cords. This period is important as vocal play strengthens the muscles required for clear speech. Unlike reading and writing, it is argued that speaking is a skill which is innate within us all. Children will acquire spoken language without explicit instructions. However, the more interaction your child has, the better their speech and vocabulary will become. If your child is babbling, it is important that you acknowledge their attempts at communication by interacting with them. During this phase of development, children can also learn the vital skill of taking turns, which is an intrinsic part of how conversation works. This is something which they will use for the rest of their lives. This phase helps to introduce your child to the different functions, structures and sounds of human communication. Sensitivity to the human voice Studies on infants have shown that newborns have a natural preference to focus on the human voice above all environmental and non-speech sounds, such as laughing and coughing. Babies understand words before www.womanthismonth.com

they have the physical ability to speak. Amazingly, linguists have demonstrated that three-day old babies can distinguish between utterances in their mother language and those in another language. Some studies show that, in fact, language acquisition starts even before birth and that children first start to acquire language in the womb when hearing voices. A child understands much more than they can say though it is difficult to estimate just how much. You can expect that your child’s first words will predominantly be nouns, such as names of people and things. Nouns make up at least 60 percent of the first words spoken. Think about how you help your child develop the skill of labelling objects around them to encourage this progress.

Babies understand words before they have the physical ability to speak

Vocabulary growth chart • Babbling starts at around four to six months and, in English, vowels are acquired before consonants. • A child’s first recognisable words usually appear at about 12 months, but this varies in individuals. • Once children reach around18 months, they will have a productive vocabulary of around 50 words and will begin to combine words to form two word utterances and, soon after, more complex sentences. • At 24 months, most children will have reached a 200-word productive vocabulary. • Between the ages of two and three, a child will be able to understand most of what is said. At around 36 months, the number of words used accurately will be around 2,000. From here, a child will be able to learn and use around 10 new words each day. • By the age of four, only a few consonant sounds cause a problem. • By six or seven years of age, your child will probably be confident in the use of both vowels and consonant sounds. • By the age of around 17, a teenager knows and can use at least 60,000 words accurately. The role of grammar Chomsky, a famous linguist, put forward the idea that all humans have within them something which he called a language acquisition device. He suggested that this is responsible for the way that children can, through trial and error, pick up the grammatical rules for their mother tongue. In effect, when children over apply rules which they have come across before, it is proof that they are absorbing grammar and learning through trial and error. Children will demonstrate their understanding of grammar as their linguistic understanding matures. For example, when a child says mouses (rather than mice), it demonstrates the misapplication of a plural rule which a child would never have heard an adult use. When a child makes up sentences, even if the word order is incorrect, they should be commended because this demonstrates independent thought. Be positive with your child when they make these errors and do not over correct. These issues will iron themselves out in their own time. Different schools of thought Linguists have studied striking differences in the way American mothers communicate with their children compared to the Gusii

62 March 2014

mothers of Kenya. Gusii mothers rarely make eye contact with their children and only respond to child vocalisations if the children are in distress. This behaviour follows from their beliefs that babies cannot understand speech and that it is senseless to talk to them before they are old enough to understand what is being said. The Western way is a little different. As parents, we strive to engage our children believing that they have the innate ability to understand and hoping that the more we communicate, the greater their understanding will be. The developmental milestones shown in the chart demonstrates the general pattern of development in speech. If you are concerned about your child’s linguistic development, then you should speak to your child’s teacher and your family doctor who may refer you to a speech and language specialist. Although all children develop at different rates, remember that you know your child best. Reference: Richman, A. L., Miller, P. M. & LeVine, R. A. (1992). Cultural and educational variations in maternal responsiveness. Developmental Psychology, 28, 614-621. g

How to encourage your child to communicate effectively • Praise your child for attempting to use difficult words. • Encourage your child to use adjectives to describe nouns. • Use language that your child will understand; then offer synonyms in conversation to extend your child’s vocabulary. • Remember that listening is important. Don’t be distracted by the TV, tablet or telephone. Make time to focus and listen. • Let your child know that you are listening by using lots of eye contact and other positive forms of body language, such as nods and smiles. • Show your interest by using phrases like ‘tell me more’, ‘go on’ and ‘what happened next’? • Ask your child questions. • Rephrase and say a few things in different ways. • Revisit and reuse new words regularly. • Repeat and build on what your child has said to make more complex sentences. • Invest some time to speak and listen to your child. www.womanthismonth.com

Spotting Food Allergies by DR JINAN DARWISH

Paediatricians should alter their advice to parents on how to introduce solids to their infants’ diet. Right now, it is passé, overly guarded and in conflict with current research on how good eating habits develop.

S

ince paediatricians are apprehensive about food allergies, the American Academy of Pediatrics tells parents to introduce one new food at a time and to wait a few days before introducing another new food. This, of course, proctors repetition, not variety. Clearly the policy is well-intentioned, but it does not help avert allergies; it just makes it easier for parents to identify food allergies. The policy does, however, make it difficult for parents to teach their children good eating habits. In France, where the child allergy rate is 3.24 percent there are no such ‘go slow’ recommendations. One study found French parents made an average of 18 changes in the foods they offered every day. This resulted in French children developing a more diverse palate. More importantly, they develop the habit of eating a variety of different foods. The early exposure leads to an imprinting-like phenomenon, such that those flavours are not only preferred but they take on an emotional attachment. Of course, food allergies can be grave; so do not undermine the need to be on the lookout for them. There are few things to keep in mind when developing a child’s food habits. • The classes of foods parents normally introduce first (rice, cereal, fruits and vegetables) are the least likely to be allergenic. Researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center, a non-profit research organisation in

64 March 2014

Philadelphia, have identified several sensitive periods for taste preference development. One is before three-and-a-half months of age, which makes what the mother eats while pregnant and breast-feeding so important. • The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology now recommends that parents introduce potentially allergenic foods to their children when they are between four and six months old. Waiting any longer may escalate the risk of food allergies. • Allergic reactions to food are seldom fatal. A new study published in Clinical & Experimental Allergy shows that the incidence of children dying from a food allergy is more than 10

times lower than their chances of dying from an accident. Food allergies can always be recognised with hindsight. It is easy to imagine a policy that would not pit allergy identification against eating habits. Introduce as much diversity as possible during weaning. Researchers believe that the taste preferences that develop at crucial periods in infancy have lasting effects. In fact, changing food preferences beyond toddlerhood appears to be extremely difficult. If your family has a history of food allergies, then talk to your paediatrician about when and how to introduce foods like shellfish and peanuts. www.womanthismonth.com

Working from Home by ELMA BARTHOLOMEW

If you work from home, it’s vital that you have somewhere to concentrate, a place that is separate from your personal life and is a nice space to spend time in.

C

hoosing the right space to set up your home office is the first step. Many of us look for a spare room or basement, but there could be a better place like a rarely used formal living room or even an extension of the dining room. Secondly, give your working space the importance it deserves — especially if it’s a fulltime job. You’re going to be spending as much time in your study as you do in the rest of your house.

Roche Bobois House of Fraser

What’s your style? Depending on your lifestyle and character, there are two ways to set up shop — behind closed doors or an open study. If you can expect your partner to respect your privacy and you don’t have kids hollering around the house, an open office space is recommended. Not only does it save a spare room, it is more appealing. However, if you need to entirely switch off from your personal life and focus or need to feel like you ‘left’ work when you’re done, build an office behind doors. Whichever style you choose, we suggest a trial period of one month. Before moving furniture or investing in desks, try working in the chosen space for 30 days. This gives you the time to find out if the allotted area is in fact ‘work friendly’. It could be too noisy or too quiet, too hot or too cold, too bright or too dull. It’s your world The best part about setting up an office at home is that you can mould it into exactly what you need. There’s no need to adjust to anything. If you prefer working standing up (since sitting apparently kills you now), build a stand-up desk! If a traditional desk set-up is what you need, www.womanthismonth.com

then take advantage of the corners in your home. At Woman This Month, windows are mandatory. Simply shut the blinds if you want to rid yourself of distractions. The real investment for the perfect office is an ergonomically correct chair. Save yourself trips to the doctor and masseuse by avoiding bad posture and strain injuries. Never settle for anything less — your back deserves a throne! The essentials Do you know what makes all those blog inspiration posts so pretty? A clutter-free environment! You need to assign a place for everything. More importantly, decide what makes it to your office space and what doesn’t. For a tidy working space, you need shelves above or next to your desk. Adjustable or open cabinets help keep things organised. Look for items that don’t look messy out in the open — folders, files and pen holders. (Read our tips section for more storage ideas.) We think bookshelves are the best accessory to any room. Lighting is a crucial element of an office space. If it isn’t bright enough, invest in additional sources of light — even a small table lamp makes a big difference. Revisiting

our concept of ‘window therapy’, it is a known fact that natural light can improve your mood. The add-ons What many people tend to forget and underestimate are the demands of gadgets. Wiring and power points need to be looked at in advance to avoid an unkempt set of extension cords and visible sockets. Think about it; you’ve got wires that need to be connected to the computer, printer, phone, router and maybe even a camera. Whether you have a whole room to yourself or a section of another, it helps to separate this area from the rest. The easiest ways to do this are a paint job and different flooring. While you opt for function, don’t neglect the style factor. Personal touches like photographs and souvenirs from trips help as well. Get creative and install some art on the walls. You can even consider putting up a pin board. Lastly, get some greenery. House plants that are impossible to kill can be found at your local supermarket. We recommend Glasshouse Terrariums, which offer pretty gardens in a bottle. These ‘glasshouses’ are minimalist and the plants are easy to care for. Greenery reduces stress levels and increases productivity. March 2014

What’s wrong? Before you begin anything, take a look at your home from an outsider’s perspective. Identifying the problem is half the work. Then, categorise the tasks by rooms or activities. It is important to remember what you’re making room for.

Considering how to maximise space is essential, especially if you’re a tenant. Most apartments can barely accommodate its inmates, let alone elaborate décor. These storage tips will help you live comfortably in small spaces, without compromising on design.

Declutter your home Round up some storage must-haves — baskets, bins, shelves, chests and folders. Getting organised is much easier if you have storage solutions for every room. Clear out what you no longer use or need. Make the most of your storeroom and closet. Eliminate clutter of any kind. Closet space Many interior designers suggest removing closet doors (especially the swinging kind) if you live in small spaces. While walls and dividers can help segment areas, it also minimises room for movement and change. A simple curtain hanging from a suspension rod works miracles. Invest in identical hangers that are not very bulky. Pretty as a picture One thing you cannot escape when you lack storage space is the fact that most things you own are out in the open. This in turn means that you need to focus on finding things that are both functional and pretty. This includes everything from kitchen appliances, cutlery, crockery and utensils to cleaning supplies, towels, mats and bins. Monsters under the bed Embrace under-the-bed storage. If you don’t have a box bed, shop for storage bins that fit snugly under your bed. Every thing you don’t want to be seen outside and can possibly ruin the ambience goes in here. Again, this is a clutter-free zone. Keep your winter essentials as well as extra linens, pillows and cushions here.

Hole in the wall A wall unit is a quick fix solution as it acts as a media centre, bookshelf and display case. If you have a built-in cupboard anywhere in the house, feel blessed. The same rule applies though. No doors! Open cabinets give the illusion of space. This is where pretty crockery and utensils gain significance. You can even build shelves around the house.

Old is gold Your granny’s biscuit tins and vintage trunks are sneaky ways to double your storage space. They make great display items and teapoys, depending on its size. Polish and paint jobs are simple ways to give new life to antiques. Step by step Much like the mystery cabinet under the bed, the space under a stairway ought to be treasured. If it is wide enough and you’re feeling creative, turn into a mini play area for the kids or a study for yourself. If that seems like a luxury, build a shelf with planks of wood and fetch wicker baskets of different sizes that will fit the space.

9.

Risk of showers Opt for bathroom storage. You might think this might take space. However, you need to remember creating an illusion of space is what we need to prioritise. Find an armoire which can hold extra towels, cleaning gear and toiletries. It clears the confusion that scattered items can create in a small area. Trick cupboards and sink skirts are great too!

Look up Wall space is your best friend. Go to great heights with floor-to-ceiling shelves and cabinets. The space above bookcases can be put to good use. A good designer can help you turn impossibly narrow alcoves into functional areas with overhead storage, especially when it comes to small bathrooms and kitchens.

Creating Special Moments by SIMI KAMBOJ

W

You now have the power to grant a young child’s wish by joining hands with the tender-hearted women at Child's Wish Society.

ho doesn’t like to put a smile on a child’s face, especially when the child may be terminally ill or unable to afford the small joys of life? Founded last year, Child's Wish Society is a Bahraini charity that grants wishes to children suffering from illnesses as well as overburdened families with limited income. “We aim to bring a little bit of magic into people’s lives by creating some special moments and memories,” says social activist and founder of the charity, Manal Al-Awadhi. Not every child hankers for an iPad or an iPhone, she believes. “Sometimes it can be something as small as a burger from a popular fast food joint, a new school uniform or a cake and toys for Eid. It’s only when you dig deeper that you realise how simple children’s desires really are,” she notes. Manal was moved when she came across a poster of a child looking longingly at a fast food joint, where he couldn’t afford to eat. She then started collecting wishes from around www.womanthismonth.com

90 underprivileged children in Muharraq and asked for donations to fulfil them, generating a great response from donors. Over the last year, Child's Wish Society has organised morale boosting messages and visits for the terminally ill children at Salmaniya Medical Complex. The establishment has also sponsored cinema and dinner outings for orphans in Bahrain. The charity’s biggest project last year was the Blessing Blanket woven by a Bahraini woman, which was auctioned for BD35,000. The money was used to send nine underprivileged Bahraini patients overseas for treatment. Manal monitors around 400 children on a regular basis, providing for their annual requirements. In addition, the charity supports one-off wishes of poor families and children. “No project is too big when it comes to helping people. We know that from experience. Even closed doors have opened up for us,” she says.

Her efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. Manal has won the Shaikha Hessa Prize for Youth Volunteer Work and was facilitated at the Social Media Awards last December for the use of social media networks like Twitter and Instagram in philanthropy. “None of our work would have been possible without our support groups on Twitter, who broadcast our appeals on social media. Also Bahraini philanthropist Khalid Alkhayat has been a great help in helping us devise our projects,” she adds. In recent times, the charity has trained its eyes on prevention of child abuse and has initiated a social media campaign to educate children. A Zain-sponsored workshop with a professor from Kuwait was organised to chalk out action strategies to deal with abuse cases. “We want children to feel free and talk about this when they’re affected. We’ve been sending out pictures on Twitter and Instagram, which people have found shocking. However, abuse is a reality in our world today and we cannot ignore it anymore,” she says. March 2014

Whose Team Are You On? by NATASHA BIRD

A

s every new year rolls around, vast swathes of women, panicking about excess pounds and one too many chocolate puddings, latch onto the latest fad diet and exercise regimes in a bid to achieve a more desirable physique. Unfortunately, most of these attempts end in failure. This isn’t necessarily because these fads aren’t grounded in science; it is more because dramatic changes to your existing routine will be largely unsustainable. Face the facts; a lean, muscular body doesn’t just appear overnight. The only way you’re going to get there is by making small, but permanent and significant adjustments to the way you eat and the exercise regime you practise. These adjustments need to fit the demands of your lifestyle, such as your job, age and whether or not you have children.

72 March 2014

In addition to speaking to sports scientist and women’s fitness expert John Dent for some pointers, we track down three fitness superwomen. Take a look at their three very different approaches to wellbeing. One of them might make a superwoman out of you too! The expert’s viewpoint According to John Dent, whose background is in working with female sports stars that are keen to get back to fitness after surgery, the best way to start is slowly. “The greatest misconception,” he says, “is that pain equals gain. Usually, pain actually equals drain and can be really demotivating. Less is more when it comes to making positive, long-lasting change.” If you haven’t exercised for a while, you need

to begin by seeking professional advice. It is hugely important that the abdominal muscles supporting the lumbar spine, pelvis and tummy undergo proper conditioning prior to trying running or more energetic pursuits. A simple programme to restore the coordination and strength of the deep tummy muscles should form the foundation of any new health and fitness adventure. “I am a great believer in rewards. Rewards help crystallise and embed new health behaviours. It can take more than 100 days for a new behaviour to be installed. So be kind to yourself and make the most of sharing your experience with a network of friends who are supportive,” he adds. Let’s meet our superwomen! www.womanthismonth.com

Team Healthy Food

Name: Stevie Kirk Age: 30 Profession: Director-Bamboo Naturally What’s your fitness plan? My lifestyle is about living as compassionately as possible; where I can I live organically. This includes the food I eat, but also all cosmetics I use and household products I own. I am a student of health science, majoring in nutritional medicine. I run an environmentally conscious soft-goods company called Bamboo Naturally. Even though my day-to-day life is hectic, I do my best to keep myself balanced with the right food, with plenty of relaxation and time out, which is exercise for the body and the mind. I eat ‘clean’, avoiding processed and refined products. My meals are loaded with fresh, whole and natural foods. I have a high-protein breakfast. This makes me feel fuller and curbs cravings. I then have high-protein snacks throughout the day to keep me going. I love a handful of nuts and my favourite is homemade organic hummus with veggie sticks. Why does it work? Dieting is not a sustainable form of weight loss, nor does it support healing or health. Lifestyle changes, such as reducing coffee, sodas and energy drinks and switching to organic foods, are about making a commitment to yourself. With these permanent changes, you naturally become healthier, happier and weight loss feels effortless. Extra tips? Forget the old ‘eat less to weigh less’ idea. A calorie-restricted diet leaves you hungry, grumpy and lethargic. It’s what you eat that makes the difference. Counting calories means nothing. It’s the type of calories you need to focus on. Replace coffee with herbal teas or homemade vitamin water to aid detoxification, weight loss and hydration. Improve your sleep hygiene by switching off the television and computers one hour before bed. TEAM SPORTS

Name: Yaa Osei-Asibey Age: 27 Profession: Executive Officer What’s your fitness plan? I play netball twice a week in a social league on Tuesdays, supplemented by a two-hour training session on Wednesdays. I like to start my week off in the gym, mixing it up between weights and cardio. Back in junior school, I was as fast as the boys, which was useful on a football pitch. Then, at secondary school, I was introduced to hockey, tennis, netball and swimming. I was awful at tennis. Swimming wasn’t worth the additional headache as blow-drying my hair is a one-hour workout in itself! So netball won. Why does it work? Spending time with likeminded individuals is amazing. You can’t help but bond over wins and losses. It’s so dynamic. In our match last week, we spent a good 10 minutes running into each other and injuring ourselves, in a non-contact sport! It was funny; it brought us closer. (I’ll be flying to Italy in May to attend the wedding of one of my teammates.) Also, you can be held accountable, in a netball squad. Your shortcomings, such as lack of fitness, affect nine other people. Extra tips? Variety! Variety! VARIETY! You have to keep your body guessing; otherwise it will reach a plateau and you won’t see any results. If you only do weights, do a cardio weight workout. You don’t have to stop doing what you enjoy; just do it differently every time! Workout song: Katy on a Mission by Katy B Quote to live by: Accept responsibility for your life. TEAM GYM CLASS

Speciality: Exercise classes! I do body combat three times a week and body conditioning twice a week. I supplement these with Zumba, dance fit, body balance and yoga. When I had my youngest child, I didn’t exercise very often. I think you should be at home enjoying your baby and breast-feeding, plus all the late nights are very tiring. Now that she has started school, I have more free time. I set myself regular, achievable goals, by upping the weights that I use and taking on different classes. Why does it work? Being in the gym is the time I get to spend for myself. The feeling after a class is its own reward! I don’t find it hard, I just really enjoy it. I’m just so much more energetic now and I do more with my children. Also, I’ve gone down several dress sizes, so I get to buy some new clothes (don’t tell my husband)! Extra tips? I am careful about what I am teaching my children. I lead by example. My eldest child is a teenager now. I don’t really want to make a big deal about what I eat in case she gets self-conscious. So the children eat the same as me. We might have some fish and salad or chicken and salad. They have bread and rice too. They don’t seem to notice that I don’t have much in the way of carbohydrates. Water — The Ultimate Elixir by BEHNAZ SANJANA

We’ve all heard enough about ‘eight glasses of water a day’. It turns out the life-sustaining liquid nurtures us externally as well.

76 March 2014

A typical 30-minute session stimulates blood flow

A

n exhausting day of work always calls for a warm bath. Soaking in the tub, with the added allure of mood-lifting music or a good page-turner, is soothing ‘me time’ for many of us. Did you know that the temperature and pressure of water have been used for therapeutic purposes by ancient Persians, Egyptians and the Japanese? Noted Greek physician Hippocrates believed bathing in spring water cures illnesses and the Romans went all out, building public baths for themselves. Hydrotherapy, which is also called aqua therapy, goes way beyond the domestic bathtub. Read on to get the juice on this simple, natural treatment. Enjoy and unwind Our expert: Suphavidree Nasomchai, spa manager, Dessange “A hydrotherapy session involves relaxing in a tub of warm water with automated water jets,” says Suphavidree. “These water jets can be programmed to provide a soothing, massaging sensation all over the body, or for specific problem areas, like the lower back or the legs. The temperature of the water and the force of the jets can be adjusted to your liking.” www.womanthismonth.com

A typical 30-minute session stimulates the blood flow and the release of endorphins, thus relieving stress, pain and muscle soreness. Present-day hydro-tubs have a mood lighting feature in which the colour of the water changes at quick intervals or is kept in a particular shade. “Hydrotherapy is beneficial for certain skin conditions. It opens up the pores of the body and proves to be a good cleansing ritual. For example, a milk bath helps in extreme dry skin ailments like eczema,” Suphavidree says. In conjunction with saunas and steam rooms, this form of therapy induces sweating, thus flushing out impurities from the skin. Hydrotherapy is different from a Moroccan bath or a hammam; it does not involve the use of soaps and scrubs to exfoliate the skin, but relies purely on the massage provided by force of warm water. “Everybody, except those with open wounds and pregnant women, can partake in the benefits of a hydrotherapy session,” she adds.

Medical benefits Our expert: Alex Manatolo, chief therapist, Taaheal Physiotherapy Complex Hydrotherapy is an important part of the comprehensive treatment of physical ailments, like sports injuries, lower back and neck pain. It is also helpful for general fitness; for instance, to improve cardiovascular conditions, control diabetes or reduce obesity. “Hydrotherapy utilises the features of water to help a patient get better,” Alex explains. “Buoyancy, the upward push of water that helps a body float, reduces the effect of one’s body weight by 50 percent. Secondly, the hydrostatic pressure that water offers and the friction with water molecules are a useful form of resistance, providing the patient with a gentle, but effective form of exercise.” Exercising in water allows for shortening, or concentric contraction of the muscles. The force of gravity does not affect movements in water. This helps avoid muscle spasms and micro-tears in the injured muscle. March 2014

It also prevents the problem from aggravating. Neurological conditions, like strokes and Parkinson’s disease, can also be helped by hydrotherapy. Generally, all such conditions affects muscle tone, spasticity and coordination. This prevents the patient from walking normally. They lose confidence due to the fear of falling, which leads to more forms of disability. “Moving limbs inside water takes less effort due to the lightness the body feels in water. Hydrotherapy makes it easier for patients to exercise, giving them the necessary confidence and motivation to walk normally,” Alex notes. In many countries, a major part of the rehabilitation programme of stroke patients is hydrotherapy to provide effective gait training. Post-operative cases can be helped by hydrotherapy as well. The patient can be made to do specific movements in the water, which cause minimal or no pain, helping them to recover faster. Children with conditions like cerebral palsy benefit from the thermal effects of water. A child suffering from any type of physical

dysfunction instinctively loosens up to play inside water. The limbs extend, their palms open up and they are more relaxed. Severely obese people can reap the benefits of hydrotherapy to increase metabolism and shed weight in a safe and gentle manner. Branching out Our expert: Chloe Tormo, assistant spa manager, Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa ‘Thalassa’ translates to ‘sea’ in Greek. As the name suggests, thalassotherapy refers to hydrotherapy using sea water. This method harnesses the innate qualities of sea water, such as mineral salts, vitamins and trace elements, to revitalise and heal the body. When the body is immersed in warm sea water, the skin not only releases toxins but also absorbs its vital minerals. It improves blood circulation and tones, moisturises and nourishes the skin. Chloe says that this therapy originated in France. As the tale goes, a cyclist met with an accident and discovered the miracles of sea water to repair his injuries and restore his

body back to health. Thalassotherapy then gained popularity in parts of Europe as a natural and effective healing therapy. “Sea water is sourced far away from the shore to ensure its purity. It then goes through a minimal cleaning process to ensure that all its healing properties are kept intact. It is heated to a temperature of around 36 degrees Celsius, making it a comforting experience,” Chloe explains. There is a host of customised treatments to be chosen from. For example, the gentle sweeping action of the affusion shower works on the nerve ends to replenish them with vital minerals. The water mass slimming treatment firms the skin and breaks down cellulite. “Thalassotherapy is excellent for aged people as it particularly helps the movement of bones and joints. Rheumatoid conditions can also be alleviated with thalassotherapy,” says Chloe. Automated hydrotubs provide different programmes to suit each individual. Coupled with scrubs, massages and seaweed or algae wraps, thalassotherapy tackles different goals, like slimming, firming, stress reduction and skin revitalisation. g www.womanthismonth.com

Global Muses by ANKITA MAMGAIN

The mind of an artist can draw inspiration from the most unlikely sources. However travel remains one of the most profound influences of all. Here are some destinations that left a lasting impact on designers and their collections.

Dutch Caribbean idden coves revealing emerald-blue waters, arcs of golden sand stretched out beneath vibrant sunsets and a meeting point of rich historical heritage — what more can one ask for on holiday. Celebrated jewellery designer Rona Pfeiffer says the Dutch Caribbean is the place that has had the deepest impact on her and her designs. “The influence travel has on my creations is one that supports the theme of my jewellery and my life — contradiction. I sailed through the Dutch West Indies, a magnificent visual, but listened to Led Zeppelin,” says Rona. This contradiction of senses is the cynosure of her pieces. Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao, often referred to as the ABC Islands, lie north of Venezuela, outside the hurricane belt, and boast a wonderful climate. Urban, pulsating with energy and yet tranquil and serene, these islands are a great choice year round for the beaches, family fun, water sports, culture, history and pampering.

Brazil ombining the fiery rhythms of samba, the overwhelming energy of the famous carnival and the urban-exotic touch of Rio, designer Christian Beck’s latest collection takes us on a journey into the heart of Brazil. There can never be a bad time to travel to the world’s fifth largest country. The list of activities and places to see require a little more time than your week-long getaway. We suggest you set aside at least three weeks for this holiday, especially if you’re going for the first time. You can tan and mingle with the locals on the country’s endless coastline, from Rio’s glamorous Copacabana to the unspoiled treasures along the north-eastern shores. Take a boat ride to Iguaçu’s raging waterfalls, or spot exotic wildlife at Pantanal while trekking through the Amazon. Indulge in retail therapy at Sao Paulo’s chic boutiques and dive into the vibrant mix of colours, rhythms and cultures that this country boasts.

Galicia, Spain he quaint coastline of north-west Spain made its way into Uma Wang’s spring-summer 2014 collection, which embraces long sombre silhouettes. She revealed a romantic collection of gowns and dresses inspired by Galicia. From soft and fine white sands that merge gently into a sparkling, calm blue sea, and myriad hues of green lent by the pine wood forests, this colour palette is cool and comforting — perfect for summer. Although much of the country’s shoreline is heavily built-up, the long, indented coast of Galicia is lined with untarnished sandy strands backed by pine woods and dunes. The beaches are its main selling point in summer. The region’s towns and fantastic seafood are big draws as well.

Aon Spin Salads

by JAMES CLAIRE

In most cuisines it is common to serve breads and salads together. Fattoush is a good example of how day-old flat breads can be used to add flavour and texture to a salad. The Tuscan bread salad called panzanella and the French salad sandwich called pan-bagnat are two other fine examples of this wonderful combination. For those that are on a specific diet, these salads can be made with gluten-free alternatives. Whether you’re on a health kick or just looking for something new to try, these delicious salads are worth a try. Panzanella 4 slices 40g 4 1 tbspn 2 cloves 250g 100g 3 tbspns 1 tbspn pinch pinch 1 tbspn

brioche ghee, melted red capsicum, cut into long slices olive oil garlic, crushed and finely chopped cherry tomatoes, halved black olives, sliced basil leaves, lightly torn flat-leaf parsley salt black pepper balsamic vinegar

• Preheat a small frypan over medium heat. Brush the slices of brioche lightly with the melted ghee. Place them one at a time into the heated pan and cook until golden brown on both sides. Remove and cut into 2cm cubes. Cook all four slices and then set aside. • Heat the oil in the frypan and slowly cook the slices of capsicum on both sides. • In a large bowl, toss together the chopped garlic, the cooked capsicum, cherry tomatoes, olives, basil and flat-leaf parsley leaves. Add the brioche pieces and season to taste with salt and pepper. Toss gently to combine. • Sprinkle the salad with balsamic vinegar and toss gently to combine. Serve immediately.

Pan-bagnat 1 loaf ciabatta or rye bread to drizzle olive oil 300g tuna, tinned and drained 40g black olives, pitted and sliced 1 tbspn capers, drained 1/2 purple onion, thinly sliced 1/2 red capsicum, seeded and thinly sliced 1 tomato, thinly sliced 6-10 basil leaves pinch salt pinch black pepper, cracked • Slice the ciabatta bread into half. Drizzle both halves with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. • Break the drained tuna into chunks and spread it over the bottom layer of the bread. Scatter olives and capers over the tuna and top it with the onion and capsicum slices. Drizzle with a little more olive oil. • Next, place the thinly sliced tomato and season with salt and pepper. Tear the basil leaves over the tomato and top it with the second ciabatta half. • Wrap the entire loaf tightly in plastic wrap twice. Place the loaf onto a baking tray and place a second baking tray on top. Weigh the pan-bagnat down with something heavy, such as a casserole dish, for two hours in the refrigerator. Unwrap the loaf; slice it crosswise into four portions and serve.

Fattoush 1 flat bread or kuboos 3 tbspns oil, for frying 2 cucumbers, peeled and finely diced 2 tomatoes, finely diced 2 tbspns white radish, finely diced 1/2 red capsicum, finely diced 1/2 green capsicum, finely diced 3 spring onions, finely diced 3 tbspns mint, finely chopped 3 tbspns flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped pinch salt pinch black pepper 1 lime, juice 40ml olive oil • In a small frypan, heat the oil to frying temperature. Cut the flat bread or kuboos into small 1cm cubes and fry them until golden brown. For a healthier version, bake the cubes in an oven until golden brown. • To make the salad, toss the cucumbers, tomatoes, radish, red and green capsicums, spring onions, mint and flat-leaf parsley in a large bowl. • In a separate small bowl, whisk together the lemon juice and oil. Pour it over the salad and toss everything together. • Lastly, toss through the fried or baked cubes of bread. Season the salad to taste with salt and pepper. • Serve immediately.

MEISEI

Famously Supreme Having established an undisputable position in the contemporary Asian cuisine scene, this fine dining venue invites you for a laid back lunch.

T

ime constraints and for many, just a lack of motivation, often makes you end up eating a store-bought sandwich for lunch. However, connoisseurs of good food will go to any length to make each meal special. One place that never disappoints in dishing out premium quality preparations, even for a hasty lunch, is Meisei in Adliya. Known for its innovative menu and chef Michael Sang-Kyu Lee’s purist approach, the restaurant is a popular fine dining venue in the Kingdom. Its brand of Japanese cuisine is playful and novel, and yet retains all traditional flavours. Meisei’s lunch menu boasts a mix of vegetarian, meat and seafood dishes that are delicious and light. Priced between BD10 and BD15, the menu contains more than 10 dishes specially designed for lunch. Each dish is served with a complimentary miso soup and the signature Meisei salad. We decided to give this lunch menu a try and were pleasantly surprised. We opted for the grilled hammour jap tang and the tori katsu, which is corn-fed chicken fried with breadcrumbs and served with balsamic teriyaki sauce and potato mash. The soup and salad arrived almost instantly. The Meisei salad is a very simple medley

84 March 2014

of fruits and vegetables. Binding it together is a mild sesame seed vinaigrette. The main course was ready by the time we polished off our salads. Prepare yourself for the portions. This fine dining venue does not serve bite-sized delicacies; instead it offers wholesome servings, something chef Michael is particularly proud of. As much as you don’t want to disturb the presentation, the inviting aromas are hard to resist. The fish was seasoned with salt and pepper, seared and then baked to perfection. Served on a bed of sautéed seafood and sauce, the dish had all natural flavours intact, undisturbed by cooking techniques. The corn-fed chicken was crisp and quite surprisingly light on the stomach. Fried in soy oil, and served with sweet and sour balsamic teriyaki relish and curried mashed potatoes, this dish had a variety of textures and was simply delicious.

Other promising contenders on the menu are Kobe beef Cantonese crispy noodles, Japanese fish and chips, spicy assorted sashimi rice, black Angus beef teriyaki, sashimi bento and sushi bento. “I cannot give you a two-minute lunch. If you come to Meisei, I want you to savour every bite since these are indeed the finest quality ingredients prepared with precise techniques mastered over the years by my chefs,” says chef Michael. An Online Journey One of the island’s most popular bloggers tells us how VIVA's new 4G LTE service, recently introduced in the Kingdom, has changed her world.

I

f somebody asked you to explain 4G, what would you say? If you’re anything like I was this time last month (and you don’t work for a telecom company), I’m guessing probably not a whole lot. All I knew was that: • It’s on every billboard in Bahrain at the moment. • It’s the future of telecommunication. • I may (or may not) have already had it on my phone. In a week’s time, thanks to VIVA, I knew a whole lot more about it. I also rediscovered the joys of online shopping with a superspeedy connection. Yay! So while we’re on the subject of virtual shopping, here are a few of my personal fashion faves. Best fashionable flash At the top of this lovely list is Gilt.com. This ‘first come first served’ site is packed full of designer darlings and is just like a box of chocolates. You never know what you might get. L.A.M.B. today; DVF tomorrow. Best of all, Gilt ships to Bahrain. You’ll pay around BD8 for an average-size package. A girl’s gotta love it! Best designer discount You really can’t go past Shopbop.com. This www.womanthismonth.com

seriously addictive site features items from hundreds of designers, many at heavily discounted prices. It has a look book, which will put a whole virtual outfit together for you. I also adore the free express international shipping. The last time I bought from Shopbop, my silk Ramy Brook pants were hanging in my wardrobe in Bahrain in less than two days after I’d ordered them online. Funniest fashion fails Of course all that virtual shopping and rushing around from app to app can be absolutely exhausting. So for those times when you just want to kick off your heels, relax and enjoy all things weird and wonderful, you’ll love The Cut on the Runway. This free interactive app allows you to rank your top hits and biggest misses from the runway, and will have you

wondering, “OMG, what were they thinking?” What I now know about 4G: • It’s fast! No more waiting around for your page/pants/Prada to load. • It makes online shopping a whole lot more satisfying. • I’m pretty sure that I don’t have it on my phone — yet! Georgina Jennsen is the blogger behind Blondeinbahrain.com. Her 4G LTE experience on her iPad Air was provided by the leading telecommunications company, VIVA. March 2014

The eloquent ornaments, arabesque garlands and gently curved elements of the Calatrava cross are produced with chip removal techniques using sharp burins. These not only incise the precious metal, but actually ‘lift’ the decorations out of the gold surface. The engraver applies the chisel to sculpt life into the small surfaces between the threedimensional structures. Thus, more than one hundred hours of work are invested until the engraving alone meets the approval of the master artisan and Patek Philippe’s president, Thierry Stern. With the same precision and artistry, the engraver uses relief techniques to decorate the minute repeater slide in the case flank, the two crowns and the white-gold clasp that locks the strap. The ornaments of the two crowns are as informative as they are decorative. The dynamometric winding crown at four o’clock shows an arrow in relief to indicate the direction of rotation, while the moon and stars in relief on the crown at two o’clock reveal that it is intended to adjust sidereal time and the celestial functions on the rear dial. Celestial display The back dial of the Sky Moon Tourbillon Ref 6002 presents a highly unusual spectacle on its rear dial. The night sky of the northern hemisphere rotates beneath a sapphire-crystal glass, depicting the angular motion of the stars and of the moon, the meridian passages of Sirius and of the moon, and the waxing and waning moon phases. Additionally, two hands from the centre indicate sidereal time on a 24-hour scale. An elliptical contour surrounds the portion of the nocturnal sky that is visible from a specific location. These fascinating functions are handled by a highly unique, patented mechanical module. With this Sky-Moon mechanism, Patek Philippe has achieved a nearly incredible degree of precision in the astronomical depiction of the heavenly canopy. Call 17 520-055. www.womanthismonth.com

Virgo Aug 24 - Sept 23

There is a sense of calmness surrounding you. However, things are set to change in the coming weeks. On another note, work projects that have been blocked or postponed could suddenly get the go ahead again, which in turn could mean travel for you. Like many things this month, this could also be very last minute; so be prepared.

Libra Sept 24 - Oct 23

Star

Gazing by RAPHAEL

Find out what March has in store for you… Pisces Feb 20 - Mar 20

This month you are not going to be your usual outgoing self and many are set to comment on the change in your character. The most important thing is to get some well-earned rest. You need to recharge your batteries. Take some time off and if necessary just get away from it all.

Gemini May 22 - Jun 21

The start of this month could find you feeling anxious, which could have something to do with an outcome of a situation that currently swings in the balance. There is no need to dwell too long on matters. On a lighter note a gift is on its way to you, either in the form of money or perhaps jewellery.

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20

Cancer Jun 22 - Jul 23

Taurus Apr 21 - May 21

Leo Jul 24 - Aug 23

You’re going to be occupied as you are called to bring your financial experience into play. It seems that a relative’s business plan hasn’t developed. The real balancing act for you is to deliver the truth and make them accept what you are saying has relevance. You’ll just have to remain determined. You may find yourself in a position to address something that you regret when an opportunity comes your way relating to a challenge you have long wanted to take. Of course many of you will need to ensure current responsibilities. Relationships are taken into consideration before going ahead. www.womanthismonth.com

You could be feeling bored at work, mainly because you are simply not being challenged in your current role. You are in need of a new project to really get your teeth into; something that will stretch your abilities. This means that you have mastered your present situation and it is time to move on. You have been able to build a successful career. Aside from the personal satisfaction this affords you, there is still something missing. You have lost touch with the artistic and loving side of your character. Try to make amends with your partner by planning something positive for you both to do.

You have a lot on your plate in March; just don’t waste opportunities. Choose an initiative that takes your fancy; set out to deal with it with courage and a light heart. It is all too easy to push opportunities aside and think that you will deal with it tomorrow. It is better to meet challenges as soon as possible.

Scorpio Oct 24 - Nov 22

You may find yourself looking at life with a good degree of satisfaction. However, one area that needs further attention is your need for greater challenges in the work place. You have a number of career opportunities, but you feel inexplicably scared and a little guarded. Put it behind you and take the plunge.

Sagittarius Nov 23 - Dec 21

You may have job offers coming your way. Take time to assess whether the focus and effort invested in your career opportunity matches the best possible financial outcome. You have the chance to be picky, so take your time and choose wisely. Remember that it isn’t just about money; satisfaction needs to play a big part too.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 20

Your close relationships have suffered a bumpy ride. Only you can decide what you really want and where you want your relationship to head. This takes courage and is a huge emotional pull; however you owe it to yourself and your partner to be truthful. Be prepared to hear things you would rather not listen to.

Aquarius Jan 21 - Feb 19

You are hiding a serious issue from those around you; you have an extremely honest nature. Perhaps you are defending your friends and family from hurtful news. Whatever your reason, you will soon be forced to reveal all. It won’t be pretty, but the long-term relief of not carrying around such a burden is sure to be a great reward. March 2014

A Day in Paris by JAMES CLAIRE

A recent trip to Paris saw me seated by the Eiffel Tower, enjoying a packet of freshly sugared peanuts and a large cane of candy floss. Life does not get much better!

W

hile minding my own business, two American tourists (a middle-aged husband and an older wife) walked past me. Cameras around their necks, they approached the large metal structure behind me. Mrs America says out loud in a thick accent, “Oh isn’t it breathtaking.” Mr America hesitated for a second, looked towards the Eiffel Tower and says, “Well, it is awesome, honey.” The hair on the back of my neck stood tall. How could he refute the comment that it is breathtaking? Not many countries have a man-made structure this old that comes close to the visual and dramatic splendour of the Eiffel Tower. I was just beginning to calm down when her shrilling voice continued, “Take a photo, honey!” “Nah,” he says, “everyone at home knows what it looks like. Besides, we’ve been here. Why waste the shot?” Why waste the shot? In the age of digital www.womanthismonth.com

photography, what shot is there to waste? I sat there aghast. What a futile life he must lead if that was his attitude towards travel? I have been to Paris many times and can’t help but take a photo of the cultural heritage sites every single time I’m there. A few minutes passed and I heard the laughter of a young child. Walking towards me was a young Asian couple with three little girls. There was such affection among them. The couple shared long romantic looks. The three young girls hugged each other while the parents took photos of them. This was a happy content family. As they walked past me, not once did they turn to look at the Eiffel Tower. I’m sure they were not ignoring the sites and monuments of Paris, but at that moment they preferred to enjoy their family rather than anything else. And I thought to myself, “You know, I think Mr America might have been right.” It was not the configurations of metal behind

me that was breathtaking, but the enjoyment, love and bonding occurring in front of me. Their togetherness and love made me pine for a family of my own. As I finished my five euro packet of sugared nuts, drank the remainder of my seven euro bottle of water and licked the last of my six euro candy floss from its stick, I turned to the tower of metal I had once held in such high esteem and took a breath. Taking a deeper breath I looked at the family in front of me and thought, “Now that really is breathtaking.” At my age it is rare to learn major lessons about oneself and about the things we believe are true. Even harder is to admit them to the world. That day in Paris, this proud old dog learnt something. Sometimes it’s the little things we miss, that we should spend more time appreciating. We should take photos of moments rather than monuments. March 2014

My Red Reindeer by BEHNAZ SANJANA

Come festive season and an inexplicable feeling grips you. There’s a quiet excitement buzzing about the place. Why let it go when the festivities have passed?

S

o Valentine’s Day has come and gone with a burst of red hearts and flowers. Young love blossomed and the more (ahem) mature variety just got stronger. But Valentine’s Day is about rejoicing love of all kinds and across all relations. Children living far away call folks back home. Spouses exchange gifts and mushy messages accompanied with those little red and pink hearts. And most likely, Hallmark goes laughing all the way to the bank. But I don’t only reminisce the day St Valentine played hero. It wasn’t long ago that I put away the small but exquisitely decorated Christmas tree adorning my living room. The shiny baubles have been stowed away in boxes and the twinkling lights have been wound up neatly. I sometimes look wistfully at the now empty spot that used to be proof of the past season’s joy. Even though what I deem to be the best part of the year is past us, the festive spirit in us doesn’t have to be. Imagine a trail of contentment left behind by Christmas Day, and one of love and belonging by Valentine’s Day, in which to revel in. How about we still smile at strangers, hum while we work, give people some much-needed leeway and bake gingerbread cookies? What happens if we keep in touch with family and friends more often? Wouldn’t we be better off in our amorous relationships if we made our partners feel extra special more often than just a day in February? Call me a hopeless romantic, but I believe it will only make us celebrate the next festive occasion with greater verve and sincerity. Yes, it’s true that we get so caught up in life’s nitty-gritty that we tend to forget to spread the joy and count our blessings. At least I do. To remind myself of the happiness and hope that I must live in and emanate, I have reminders hanging about my space. So if you ever see an elegant, palm-sized red reindeer with a golden collar hanging on a front door, you’ve found me.
