EDITOR’S NOTE

W

hat is going on with the weather at the moment? It seems strange to be looking at all the lovely spring and summer fashions while wrapped up in our woolies with the heaters going full blast. But look at them we have and our fashion pages this month feature a few sneak peeks at what's coming up in April's big fashion issue. Our interviewees this month are a group of accomplished women who've all succeeded in their respective fields. Maya Jashanmal is known as much for her philanthropy as her art, Jodie Baker's pictures are putting Bahrain on the social media map and Dr Iris Brune Erber is a tireless advocate for women's health, bringing a sensitive, female point of view to issues women sometimes find difficult to discuss. It was a pleasure to meet them all and share their stories. March is, of course, the month when we celebrate all things motherhood and we've put together a range of treats to help you spoil that most special of women. Check out the Over to You page for the chance to win a rather lovely surprise that would be sure to put a smile on your mum's face. And, while we're on the subject of gifts and shopping, we've also rounded-up some of the island's newest malls. They seem to be springing up at a rate of knots, so we thought we'd take a look at what's on offer. The wellbeing pages this month investigate stroke — a topic very close to our hearts here at WTM. Make sure you know the signs, it can strike anyone at any time and speed really is the key to recovery. There’s also our regular round-up of fashion and beauty news, events coming up on the island and fabulous food as well as spring time travel to inspire your next trip. We hope you enjoy this month's mag and would love to hear your thoughts.

Iron Ladies

What makes someone want to travel 70plus miles under their own steam? Liz O’Reilly met the Bahraini stars of the most recent Ironman 70.3 who will be representing their country at the coming world championships in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in September.

I was so inspired after reading about H the Iron Ladies in the February issue. Sometimes, in our culture, it seems women are lagging behind and not so encouraged when it comes to sport. However, seeing Hannah, Rana and Mariam’s achievements and reading their words encouraging other girls has given me the push I needed. I’ve been out on my bicycle for the first time since I bought it and I even managed to get my husband away from the games console to join me. Thanks and keep up the good work. Fatima. Bahraini finishers, from left, Hannah, Rana and Mariam with their trophies and, below, the three women with coach Greer

annah Al Khalifa, 26, was the first Bahraini woman past the post. Born to a Bahraini father and a Scottish mother, she was living in London and moved to the island in September 2015, which is when she took up competition seriously. A freelancer in architectural design, she says: “I’ve always been very sporty and just decided to give it a go. I was the fifth Bahraini woman to finish last year; this year I was first!” Rana Al Alawi, 24, is the baby of the bunch and was the second Bahraini woman finisher. A lawyer working with Batelco, this was her first Ironman. She says: “I was never sporty at school; in fact I broke my hand playing volleyball. But I always felt happy when I was running.” Her first proper race was the November 2015 Cross Island and she got her triathlon bike for her birthday in April 2016. Mariam Turki, 32, took part in last year’s event but only did the cycling leg. The mum of two, who works in banking, says: “I was crying on the bike and didn’t think I would make it, but I did. Afterwards I thought ‘That’s not enough, I want to do the whole thing now!'” She started training in March last year and also got her bike for her birthday. Mariam was

We’ve got a very special exclusive gift from those lovely people at Amouage to give away this month. Blossom Love is the most recent addition to the luxury brand’s floral-themed The Secret Garden Collection. It reveals the romance of a perfumed secret garden where the light, sweet and delicate nature of cherry blossom nectar marries with rose to reveal inner boldness and a memorable heart caressed by the exotic sophistication of Ylang Ylang. This floral love story is embraced by the seductive allure of amaretto, tonka bean and vanilla before melting into sandalwood and cashmeran, to create an intense and enduring fragrant bouquet of memories. After a strictly limited launch in February, Blossom Love will be available at Amouage stores this month and we’re giving one lucky reader the opportunity to be among the first to get their hands on a 100ml bottle, worth around BD100. Perfect for Mother’s Day – or for yourself! For a chance to win visit Woman This Month’s social media pages and keep your eyes peeled for our competition. Good luck everyone.

the fourth Bahraini woman to complete the race. So what is Ironman? It’s a multi-discipline race in which competitors, or teams, swim 1.9km, cycle 90km and run 21.1km; the overall distance is 70.3 miles – a half Ironman. As a way of promoting the sport, HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, himself a keen triathlete and Ironman competitor, announced that he would pay for the first five Bahraini men and first five women to attend the world championships. But really, this sounds HARD! Why would anyone want to put themself through months of brutal training and seriously taxing competition? Rana explains: “I heard about it through Sarah Al-Thawadi [in fact they all did]; she was second last year but was injured and couldn’t compete this year. She told me about the benefits of Ironman training. You might think of it as a commitment, but it’s a lifestyle. It gives you more discipline and not just in your training but in all areas of your life, for example at work. And it’s sociable; you can train with a group or by yourself; the community is very supportive.” Mariam adds: “After I gave birth to my second

child, I was desperate to lose weight. My uncle has a running group called the Happy Team and I asked if I could join them; that’s when I heard about triathlon. I decided, if I was going to do it I wanted to train properly so I contacted Greer [Sansom], who trains us all and then I met these girls, who make training fun.” “When we first rode together, I couldn’t keep up, all I could see was Mariam looking behind her to see where I was,” says Rana. “I couldn’t even keep up with the warm-up!” confesses Hannah. Yet, they all went on to not only complete the

I loved, loved, loved last month’s ‘Get the Look’. I’m really not a girly girl and I’m always stuck for inspiration when it comes to going to posh events but the idea of teaming a jumpsuit with a tux is perfect for me. I might not be able to splash out on the gorgeous Naeem Khan sequinned version, but I’ll be keeping my eyes open for something similar. And the tuxedo jacket has already become a wardrobe staple. Naimh. Got something you want to get off your chest? Congratulations, commiserations and remonstrations all welcome. We'll carry the best one each week.

What’s caught our eye in the news this month. Pink Tax – A Montreal woman plans to take eight major retailers to court in a proposed class action lawsuit for allegedly charging women more for hygiene products than men, despite the fact that some products have identical ingredients. The so-called “pink tax” – a consumer phenomenon in which women pay more than men for the same products – has been widely reported on. Analysis from data mining company Parsehub found that women pay on average 43 per cent more than men for 3,000 products surveyed. ctvnews.ca Saudi Arabia has announced it will allow female-only gyms to open across the country – but only for people to lose weight. The conservative Islamic country has maintained a ban on women participating in competitive sports but has now relaxed rules on them going to the gym for health reasons. March in Focus What’s on our radar this month?

One for the Girls

While Bahrain has its own Women’s Day, towards the end of the year, March 8 is International Women’s Day and, though it’s not an official national celebration, lots of the hotels and spas will be putting on special offers. So if you feel the need for a bit of pampering to help celebrate the fabulousness that is womanhood, keep your eye on our social media and we’ll let you know as soon as we hear anything.

Canada in Bahrain

Taste of Havana

Asia de Cuba, loved is some of the world’s coolest cities, including New York and London, has brought its unique Chino-Latino concept to Bahrain. Known for a fun, highenergy environment with food that is intensely flavoured and imaginatively presented, it’s inspired by Havana’s famed Chinatown – ‘El Barrio Chino de la Habana’. You’ll find it in the new high-class Gallery 21 complex in the heart of Adliya, alongside brands such as Art Gallery and Cigar Lounge. A visit is highly recommended.

Culturally Speaking

Speaking of rockers, we’re more than a little excited at the prospect of Canadian multiplatinum singer/songwriter Bryan Adams taking to the stage at Bahrain International Circuit on March 13. He’s touring in support of his 13th studio album Get Up, and fans can look forward to a set filled with hits such as Summer of ’69 and (Everything I Do) I Do It For You as well as a range of stuff from the new album. See you there.

Carnival Time

Love Your Mum

It’s that time of year when Bahrain goes entertainment crazy with the annual Spring of Culture. This year events will run from February through to April, with some of the highlights being a performance from UK reggae rockers UB40 at Bahrain Bay on March 31 and a film festival taking place at the National Museum with various screenings from March 1-8.

10

March 2017

If you missed out on the Rio Carnival (that would be most of us, right?), fear not, you can get in on the act when Brazil comes to the Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, on March 9. It’s the opening Beach Party of 2017, with entertainers flying in from London, headlined by international DJ and percussionist, Joshua Roberts, accompanied by Chris Sharp on saxophone and Danni Veal and her team of dancers, who will also provide a fire display during the evening.

Bahraini Mother’s Day falls on March 21 and there are a number of special pampering and lunch deals available across the island. However, if you’re a British expat, the day to say thanks to your mum is a little later — on Sunday, March 26 — so don’t forget to get your card in the post early and make that call to Interflora. You’re welcome. www.womanthismonth.com

WEAR IT WELL

It seems the world of fashion is having another ‘80s throwback love affair with the return of the, previously much maligned, high-waisted mum jeans. They’re a bit like a cross between our beloved skinnies and the sloppy boyfriend we’ve all be sporting for so long. And it seems, as long as the waist actually sits on the waist, pretty much anything goes. From bellbottoms to cropped, or loose fitting, roll them up to show a little skin and team with sneakers or flats for daytime or add delicate sling-back heels and a sparkly top for evening glam.

FRENCH HOUSE GETS NEW CHIEF

French fashion house Carven has appointed Serge Ruffieux as creative directo, overseeing women's ready-to-wear, accessories and footwear collections. He’ll be showing his first Carven collection during the Resort 2018 season. Serge has extensive design expertise, including close to a decade spent at Christian Dior as head designer of the women's ready-to-wear and haute couture studios, and as co-artistic director between 2015 and 2016. His previous role includes time spent as right hand to the late French designer Sonia Rykiel. He says: "I am thrilled to embrace my new creative role at Carven, feeling a real affinity for Madame Carven and her vision of fashion. I look forward and am very honoured to be leading the creative direction of the house as it enters a new chapter."

REUSE AND RECYCLE Calling on friends of the environment, the Swedish multinational has launched the new ‘Bring It’ campaign to create a global movement towards recycling unwanted garments. H&M first launched its worldwide Garment Collecting initiative in 2013 and since then has collected more than 40,000 tonnes of clothing. The goal is to increase this amount to 25,000 tonnes a year by 2020. Customers can drop off unwanted garments and textiles, from any brand and in any condition, all year round, and the campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of garment recycling. By recycling, fewer garments go to landfill and, in 2014, the brand also introduced its first Close the Loop collection made with recycled textile fibres — an important step in closing the loop for fashion. PEOPLE | interview

The Soul of an Artist An artist and a humanitarian at heart, Maya Jashanmal Lalvani talks about her deep connection with Bahrain and shares her goals for the future.

A

tête-à-tête with Maya will warm the cockles of your heart. Her gracious nature captivates you the moment you meet her. Her shock of gray hair is something she wears with pride, saying: “I’ve earned it. Who I was when I was 16 is definitely not who I am at the age of 73. It’s my time to think of what I want to do, not just for myself but the community that I live in.” Maya was born in Karachi and moved to Bahrain with her parents in 1945, at the age of two. “My earliest memories are of Bahrain – It has been home in my mind forever,” she says. “I grew up here and went to Sacred Heart till I was about 12. At that time, they didn’t have an English high school for girls, so my family sent me off to a boarding school in India.” She returned to Bahrain in 1960 and spent a couple of years working with Jashanmals as an assistant to her father. She recalls one of her memories from those days: “Across the street from the old Jashanmal was Dorabjee, then Novelty Stores, Ashrafs down the street from there and then the post office. So every morning around 10.30, I would go to collect the mail. I would stop www.womanthismonth.com

at Dorabjee’s – their son was my best friend – and I would have a pineapple juice and a Bounty chocolate bar. I would then go to Novelty and see what kind of new costume jewellery they had. Next stop was Ashrafs, family friends, and I would have coffee with Ellie Khedourie to catch up on the daily news. Finally I would make it to the post office. My father used to say ‘How long does it take for you to get the mail?’ “There was no television, just a few theatres that showed Arabic and Indian movies. As far as I remember it was always about people who you met and knew.” She’s still in touch with her friends in Bahrain and, although she moved to the US after her marriage, there’s never been a year that she hasn’t returned to visit. Maya’s artistic journey started when she went to study at JJ School of Art in Mumbai, a few years before she got married and moved to the US. “I found that I really have the soul or spirit of the artist,” she says. However, she didn’t pursue it until after her children were older, when she started teaching drawing and painting for a while.

Maya Jashanmal

For the past 10 years, she has made Turkey her home, living in an idyllic little village called Turkbuku. “I think if you’re an artist, you have to have time for yourself; you can’t do art and everything else,” she says. “I have that luxury in Turkey. I have a studio. I paint and I read.” Maya recently had a solo exhibition in Bahrain at La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art, titled ‘Memories’. “I am fascinated with texture, and acrylics work very well for me. I paint on books, pieces of paper, newspapers, whatever is available. I rarely paint on canvas; it’s on wood and objects – on windows, doors – anything that doesn’t move

is a canvas for me.” She is inspired by the American artist Robert Rauschenberg among others around the world. An avid art collector, some of her prized possessions are paintings from the likes of MF Hussain, Nasreen Mohamedi and Altaf. Maya is also a great advocate of community work and has been involved in various projects over the years, from opening a non-profit community bookshop in California to co-founding the Bahrain Art Centre. Her latest endeavour is to launch a website, called ‘Connect the Dots’, to give a voice to women who have stayed home but have much to share and contribute. “I want to acknowledge them, reach out and tap into their knowledge – they are unsung heroes,” she explains. A voracious reader, Maya is also working on a series of short stories for children, collected from various countries, to help them appreciate and understand different aspects of humanity and culture. Looking to the future, she wants to continue painting and influence relations between Turkey and Bahrain socially – anything that will bring her back to Bahrain. g March 2017

PEOPLE | interview

Every Picture Tells a Story A gypsy at heart, photographer Jodie Baker has an unconventional eye for sights and scenes that capture the human spirit. Behnaz Sanjana chats to her about her craft and why people are talking about it.

A

24

s a 10-year old, Jodie remembers doing a school project on Egypt and promising herself that, some day, she’d visit the pyramids. This New South Wales Australian was probably born with wanderlust, leading her to resign from corporate life in Sydney to pack her bag and experience the world. “I made Ireland my base, where I worked for over four years. My professional experience landed me a good job, which allowed me to travel all over Europe and America,” she says. Jodie bought herself a camera to capture the different cultural experiences she’d anticipated, and auto mode was the way for the novice to go. “I remember thinking that the images were not coming off the way I actually saw them. I wanted to capture not just the print of the image but the essence of that moment,” she says. So she started educating herself about the craft, undergoing training and using trial and error to hone her photographic skills. Her love for images continued to bloom as she experienced strange places and new things, which strengthened her drive to capture moments for their simple beauty. “If you want to ‘expand’ yourself, getting up and travelling the world is the best thing you can do,” she advocates. When she decided to head back home, the intrepid traveller took, of course, the scenic route. “I went through Egypt, India, Nepal and other parts of Asia.

her to tangibly change an image during its developing, bringing out just the effect she wanted. Last year she arrived in Bahrain with her husband and adores the island for its accepting, kind and tolerant populace.

These countries are so different, and they gave me the opportunity to walk up to complete strangers and capture their life stories, narrated in all of five minutes.” Once back in Australia, and seriously committed to her craft, Jodie also learnt dark room exposure, which she loved, as it enabled

“People here willingly pose for pictures and love sharing their stories with me; so I’m quite at home here!” she laughs. Jodie’s street photography, displayed on her Instagram handle @jodiebakerphotography, is getting lots of attention on social media. She says: “I’ve had messages from former

expatriates from all over pouring in, telling me how much they miss Bahrain and how my photos made them feel they were right here again. It’s nice when you can touch somebody somewhere in the world just through a photograph – it is immensely satisfying.” She has also focused her lens on a number of weddings, engagements, births, family and commercial photo shoots. “Each of the Arabic weddings I have shot have been unique in their own way, and I vividly remember every single one of them. I collaborate with other photographers, too, like for Hindu weddings, which are massive events spread over a few days and are great fun. Clicking personal moments of the bride and groom on their special day feels great. The day goes by so fast for them, but when I present my work to them, they live the day again through my pictures,” she says, getting goosebumps as she speaks. On what inspires her, her answer is as thoughtful as her pictures: “The inspiration is life, in general. Everyone is so different, and I quite like to celebrate that. Whether it’s the couple about to be married, or the man walking the street collecting cardboard or the vendor at the market – it’s the essence that goes with it that inspires me. My pictures tell a story, rather than being just ink on paper.” g www.womanthismonth.com

Improving Breast Services

PEOPLE | interview

Eminent breast surgeon Dr Iris Brune Erber has relocated to the Kingdom after many years practising in neighbouring Saudi Arabia. She talked to Liz O’Reilly about her medical journey and making the move. Please tell us about your history, how you got started and what made you decide on this particular field of medicine. My mother, father and both grandfathers were physicians; so medicine was never really a question. I chose surgery because it is one of the active disciplines where you can intervene and make things happen. However, medical development over recent decades has put surgery, which in the past was the only treatment for breast cancer, somewhat to the background. Today surgery is only one element alongside chemotherapy, radiation, hormonal treatment and other developments. With progress, not only the role of surgery but also its invasiveness has decreased. Today, an increasing number of ladies are candidates for breast preserving surgery, which is a smaller procedure and more respectful of the woman’s body image. How long have you been in the Middle East and what brought you to this part of the world? We were actually very happy in Munich where I was a surgeon at a teaching hospital. However, I felt ready for change and wanted to utilise my skills and personal capabilities where they could make a big difference. Since breast cancer is mainly a women’s disease and it is sometimes difficult here for women to approach a male physician, combining my expertise with a purely female environment has made it easier for women to come forward. Are there any specific problems you see here? The fear of breast cancer is probably equally scary for women everywhere. The incidence has shown to be around 12 per cent – one in eight women www.womanthismonth.com

Dr Iris Brune Erber

will suffer from breast cancer. However, based on the cultural environment, the perception of this fear may vary. While some countries have an open approach to the disease, others still consider it a punishment the woman should be ashamed of. Social stigma is another hurdle. A more practical implication is the uncertainty as to the husband’s reaction, support and loyalty when faced with the consequences of treatment such as cosmetic changes and hair loss. Economic dependence on the husband may enhance this fear. How is this dealt with? The only way to help women overcome their fear is education and information. The only way to improve treatment success is early detection and treatment. Bahrain has shown really exceptional activities in both areas in recent years, both in quality and quantity. The information campaigns are very well designed, provide

excellent information and are within everybody’s reach. A substantial number of ladies have joined support groups; many of them are speaking up from first-hand experience, having survived the disease and serving as exemplary figures for those trying to overcome the social limitations in doing so. These groups provide the ladies with advice, moral support and also practical help. Availability of early detection and all treatment modalities has grown at a very fast pace and continues to do so. Today, ladies in Bahrain have access to the most modern breast imaging such as digital mammogram, ultrasound, MRI of the breast or PET CT scan. All treatment modalities such as surgery, chemotherapy or radiation are available and several major projects catering to oncological patients are in the pipeline. What services will you be offering at Awali?

Awali Hospital has just recently installed a brand-new breast imaging suite to the highest standards. The new digital mammography unit is providing excellent imaging while radiation is significantly reduced as compared to older-generation equipment. We can offer ladies a one-stop-shop breast cancer screening [annual for women with no symptoms, in order to detect a mass while it is still so small it cannot be felt] and diagnostic examination [for women who have symptoms such as pain, a mass, nipple discharge or axillary lymph node enlargement]. We are working on streamlining the processes. So when the patient comes, we can take the history, examine her, do the required X-rays, inform her of the result and give her the recommendation for further management. The whole range of breast surgery for benign and malignant conditions is also offered. In addition to breast problems, I have a clinic dedicated to proctology: all anal problems such as haemorrhoids, anal fistula or fissures can be dealt with in a very private setting. Whenever possible, we favour management that is not invasive or destructive. What are your plans for the future? Having worked the last 13 years as a surgeon in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia, I am looking forward to participating in developing breast cancer management activities within the framework of Bahrain. The quality of life here in Bahrain, combined with the drive towards continuous improvement of breast cancer treatment, makes it a wonderful base for my family and me to work, live and enjoy. g Call Iris on 3941-7861 or email iris_brune_erber@hotmail.com. DID YOU SAY SHOPPING SPREE? Life’s too short to dress badly. So that’s why we’ve taken a look at what’s on offer at some of the island’s newest shopping destinations.

EL MERCADO: Perched on the fringes of upcoming Janabiya, El Mercado has positioned itself as the vicinity’s friendly neighbourhood market. Besides Alosra Supermarket, the mall houses Boots Pharmacy, Anytime Fitness Gym, Vanity Ladies Salon, The Groom Room for men and Festivity for fun party supplies. A good selection of cafes and restaurants completes the mix here, including some of the latest dining concepts in Bahrain such as Wangs Funky Chinese Eatery, Maison Mathis and Choox Chicken Coop. Editor’s fave: Joe Mama’s just for the double entendre slogan on the staff uniform T-shirts. Sorry, we’re not telling, you’ll have to check it out for yourself.

GALLERIA: An open-plan mall, Galleria looks every bit the swanky hangout it claims itself to be. The boutique retail destination is the epicentre of activity in the residential locale of Zinj, anchored by Lulu Hypermarket. Other popular commercial brands such as Lifestyle, Shoe Express, Sketchers and Olympia join the melee. Canadian favourite Tim Hortons has made its debut in Bahrain at Galleria Mall and food and beverage outlets

and scar resurfacing can be achieved with IV glutathione injections and appropriate lasers and fillers, respectively,” explains Dr Shetty. “All in all, the miracle of facial enhancements and anti-ageing is here to stay. Be beautiful and stay beautiful.” Call 17 464-848.

FASHION FIX

Get your ‘Fashion Fix’ with runway-ready hair as one of the top hair salons on the island introduces three new seasonal styles straight off the catwalk.

E

ver wondered how top models and celebrities achieve that picture-perfect hair every time? Wonder no more and head down to Toni&Guy for a Fashion Fix appointment to get a runway hairstyle in just 30 minutes! The salon is introducing three new styles to choose from this season, inspired by looks straight from the fashion ramps of the world.

PRETTY IN PUNK Braids are big news this season and not just for little girls. The hair is parted deeply to the side and intricately braided from front to back. The remaining section of the hair is prepped with label.m dry shampoo for maximum texture and body. Wear this quirky style confidently, with an attitude to match and make heads turn wherever you go. Best for: mid-length to long hair.

NOUVEAU KNOT The ever-classic bun makes a comeback this season, but with a modern twist. This undone up-do is a super-flattering interpretation of the classic low ballerina bun. Hair is primed with label.m Sea Salt Spray, back-combed towards the crown and knotted carefully into place. This hairstyle is perfect to take you from a casual day to a chilled evening out. Best for: long hair.

FASHION FRINGE The fringe never goes out of style and various designers have all championed the style in one form or another on the runways. But the favourite look has been the faux fringe, which is the ultimate noncommittal style for those who want to try out the trend. It also solves the dilemma of the tricky growing-out stage. The hair is crafted into a reverse braid from the base of the skull towards the crown, finishing in a dramatic faux fringe with a lick of label.m hairspray. This style is perfect for a night out with the girls. Let your hair down (not literally) and have fun with it. Best for: long hair. Fashion Fix is available at Toni&Guy salon, Seef Mall, so book your appointments now! Call 17 001-700 for more information.

Need to Know!

Dr Jinan Harith Darwish is a paediatric allergy specialist and clinical immunology fellow at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center. Each month she answers your parenting questions.

Q

I’ve recently noticed that I feel tired all the time. I go to bed early but don’t always sleep well and I usually have a cup of coffee before bed, which I’ve been told I need to cut out. Can you offer any suggestions to help increase my energy levels?

light to darkness.

A

1.Try a triple shot of positivity Make three changes while you have the opportunity — not too many to become an effort but enough to make a difference and it will re-energise you. Change your outfit, change the track, change the air. You’ll get your mojo back. 2. Limit the blue light If you’re super-glued to your smartphone, it may be just the right time to change your habit. The blue light that shines out of electronics can suppress your body’s ability to secrete the sleep hormone melatonin. Switch on the night shift option on your gadgets. 3. Hydrate Dehydration is one of the leading energy sappers there is. Water is an incredibly underestimated energy booster, so have a glass every hour. Get into the habit of keeping bottles dotted about the house, within arm’s reach. After a few days, you’ll find you feel revitalised. 4. Never smother a yawn When you yawn, you take a large amount of air into your lungs, which, in turn, sends a wave of cool blood to the brain. Yawning drives away lethargy by waking up your brain. 5. Pick protein over carbohydrates When you are extremely tired it is tempting to start inhaling Cadbury. But step away and go for a protein hit instead whenever you feel a hunger www.womanthismonth.com

pang. Combining protein and fibre is a winner, because protein gives you energy and fibre helps make that energy last. 6. Chip away at sleep debt Napping for less than 20 minutes improves attentiveness and performance without leaving you feeling dazed or interfering with nighttime sleep. 7. I love me, myself and I Buy a bunch of red roses for yourself – it’s medicinal. Looking at something crimson has been shown to make your muscles move faster and work harder, giving you a shot of energy. If you’re dwindling, wear something red and you’ll reap the moodboosting benefits. 8. Get moving Do-able five-minute bursts of exercise throughout the day will make a difference. 9. Reboot your bedtime regime It’s the quality not just the quantity of your sleep that will guarantee you wake up energised. Practise good sleep hygiene; iit’s imperative to do the same things each night to tell your body it’s time to wind down. You could also dim the lights in your room an hour before sleep to transition from

10. Laugh yourself to joy Nothing works faster to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. It gives the heart a workout, equips the lungs with oxygen, kindles the brain, stimulates the immune system, prompts the release of endorphins and curbs stress hormones. Take a tip from laughter yoga and just fake it. Your body can’t discriminate between unadulterated and artificial laughter, so you’ll end up feeling happier even if you just pretend.

Q

I’ve recently moved to the Middle East from Europe and am concerned about sun damage to my skin, though I would like to get a tan. Surely it’s OK to sunbathe early on in the year before it gets really hot?

A

The new NICE guidance advises us to always wear sun protection with a factor of at least SPF 15 when out in the sun and clarifies that we should apply roughly six to eight teaspoons of lotion to cover the body. Furthermore, using SPF 30 sunscreen or higher does not necessarily mean you can spend more time in the sun without the risk of burning. Recent clinical studies of new liposomal sun protection products show sustainable effects against skin cancer. Since, in the majority of sunscreens, the amount of detectable sun-protection factor considerably falls below protection labelled on the bottle, applying endonuclease products, the next big thing, actively supports the skin’s repair mechanism and minimises the effects of sun damage. When a Stroke Strikes We know (the basics) about a heart attack, but did you know the brain can also be ‘attacked’? Behnaz Sanjana brings you some grassroots information about strokes, which affect 15 million people worldwide every year.

S

arah was going about her regular chores when she felt one side of her body go weak and numb. She tried to steady herself, but maintaining her balance felt impossible. As the dizziness took over, she plopped down on the floor, her vision blurred. She could faintly hear the panic in her daughter’s voice, but could not fully comprehend what she was being told, or articulate what she was feeling. She felt herself slipping into unconsciousness. Sarah had just suffered a stroke. What does this mean? Strokes affect a significant percentage of men and women the world over. Dr Ram Vatwani, consultant neurologist, tells us more. “A stroke is a break to the blood flow in the brain. The function of that part of the brain which experiences insufficient blood flow is affected,” he says. A stroke is like a heart attack, but in the brain. The heart pumps oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to all parts of the body. This blood is transported via a complex system of blood vessels. When there is a block or a break in a vessel, clean blood does not reach a particular area of the

body. When this happens in the brain, it’s called a ‘stroke’. “There are two broad categories of stroke – haemorrhagic and ischaemic. The first occurs when there is a rupture in a blood vessel of the brain. It is a rare occurrence, but is more likely to be fatal,” warns our expert.

An average adult’s heart beats more than 100,000 times a day “An ischaemic stroke is more common. It is when a blood clot blocks a vessel in the brain. The clot can be dissolved with medication to restore normal flow.” Dr Ram Vatwani Patients can be left with lasting vision problems, seizures, fatigue, loss of speech and memory, and paralysis. A stroke can even be severe enough to cause death Dr Vatwani draws our attention to what is called a transient ischaemic attack, or TIA. “In this case, the difficulty in speaking and the numbness lasts a very short time, maybe a few minutes only. It can, in fact, also serve as a warning sign to the onset of a full-blown stroke in the future.”

LIFESTYLE | wellbeing

What can I do to keep stroke-safe? “The cause of a stroke is multifactorial,” says Dr Vatwani. “Smoking is the number one cause. Others factors include high cholesterol. The thick plaque-like substance of cholesterol coats the inside of the arteries, causing them to become narrow. This reduces the flow of blood to the brain. Diabetes also leads to multiple narrowing of the arteries.” To reduce the likelihood of stroke, the World Health Organsiation recommends a diet high in natural produce and low in salt, along with 30 minutes of exercise five days a week, maintaining a healthy weight and stopping smoking or heavy alcohol consumption. Levels of blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure should be monitored closely.

F

FACE

Ask the person to smile. Does one side of their face droop?

A

ARMS

Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S T

SPEECH Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange? TIME

If yes, call for emergency medical aid immediately.

A TIA is also caused by a clot in the brain, but it dissolves on its own and symptoms alleviate in a day. This is generally a precursor to a regular stroke, which can occur a few days or weeks after a TIA. Medical assistance should be promptly sought to avoid the risk of a stroke any time in the future. How do I know it’s a stroke? “One must keep in mind the basic symptoms of a stroke – numbness or weakness on one side of the body, hampered speech, loss of consciousness, giddiness, vision problems and memory impairment,” reminds Dr Vatwani. In both types of stroke, time is of utmost importance. Restoration of blood flow and oxygen to the brain must begin at the earliest moment possible – within a period of four hours. www.womanthismonth.com

Prompt treatment of a stroke is the deciding factor between disability and recovery It is thus imperative for a lay person to figure out whether a person has been affected by a stroke. Remember the catchword FAST. A simple evaluation of the person’s behaviour can save his or her life.

Approximately two million brain cells can die in every minute that the brain does not receive oxygen and nutrients from blood. This results in certain body functions being affected, like walking and talking. It is important to remember that symptoms of stroke can sometimes be devoid of any pain. That is the reason many victims disregard the warning signs and do not realise the gravity of their situation.

Treatment and Coping “Treatment includes anti-platelets like aspirin and plavix, restoring normal blood circulation and hospitalisation for further care. Doctors will also start treating the underlying conditions which may have caused the stroke,” says Dr Vatwani. Research points out that women who survive a stroke are likely to recover more slowly then men and also experience depression, fatigue, disability and a poorer quality of life. Recovery from a stroke can vary from patient to patient. Physiotherapy helps to gain control of lost body functions. However, some people take longer than others to start walking, speaking and functioning normally. During this trying time, patients and their caregivers must maintain a positive outlook and develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle. March 2017

DEMYSTIFYING BACK & NECK PAIN Dr Farouq A Al-Hamdan, senior consultant spinal surgeon, explains a condition that affects many of us.

B

ack and neck pain affects all age groups, with 80 per cent of the population expected to suffer it at some time. It can start with or without injury, sudden movement or excessive activity. It can be in the cervical [neck] region, dorsal region and/or the lumbar or sacral [lower back] area. Pain can radiate from the neck to the head, shoulders and upper extremities or from the lumbar region to the buttocks and lower extremities. The condition may be due to worn-out spinal discs and joints, muscle spasm, nerve pinching, slipped disc or vertebra. It can also be attributed to simple causes such as weak muscles and poor posture with lack of fitness. Other risk factors include

Dr Farouq A Al-Hamdan

carrying excess weight, smoking and sitting at a desk for long periods. Operating or driving certain machinery or vehicles can also be a risk factor and most women in the final months of pregnancy will experience lower back pain.

The condition is usually shown through a limitation of movement ,with pain, tenderness and muscle spasm, weakness or numbness in the lower extremities. Identification of the causes of back and neck pain involves careful history taking, clinical

examination, X-ray and MRI. Sometimes other options will be used such as nerve or blood testing. The recommended treatment depends on the clinical diagnosis and test results. Most is initially conservative, including rest, pain relief and re-evaluation. If pain is severe or associated with muscle weakness or numbness, injections or surgery may be needed. Weakness in the extremities or loss of bowel or bladder control requires immediate medical attention. Dr Al-Hamdan is also director of the Spine Science Institute, Washington. CHEF’S SPECIAL Like many chefs, Rémy Brigaudin’s love of fine cuisine began at an early age and came from within his own family, as his grandmother was very creative in the kitchen. LAMB NAVARIN This French lamb stew is packed with onions, peas, and root vegetables Ingredients: serves four • 2tbsp canola oil • 700g trimmed lamb shoulder, cut into cubes • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste • 5 medium carrots (one chopped, four peeled and cut into two pieces) • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 2tbsp flour • 1tbsp tomato paste • 4 medium turnips, peeled • 4 medium new potatoes, • 3tbsp unsalted butter • 2tsp sugar • 12 pearl onions, peeled • Finely chopped flat-leaf parsley, for garnish • Optional: green beans Method: • Heat oven to 350°. Heat oil in large, heavy cooking pot with lid, over medium-high heat. Season lamb with salt and pepper. Working in batches, add lamb and cook, turning once, until browned (eight to 10 minutes). Transfer lamb to a plate and set aside. • Add the chopped carrot and yellow onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are soft and brown (about 10 minutes). Add garlic, flour and tomato paste and cook, stirring often, until tomato paste begins to brown, (about two minutes). Stir in six cups water and reserved lamb. Cover, bring to a boil, and transfer to oven; cook until lamb is tender, about 50 minutes. • Using a slotted spoon, transfer lamb to a plate and cover with foil to keep warm. Set a sieve over another saucepan and strain cooking liquid. Discard solids. Bring liquid to a boil over medium-high heat, skimming surface occasionally; cook until www.womanthismonth.com

reduced to two and a half cups (about 25 minutes) and set liquid aside. • Meanwhile, using a paring knife, trim each piece of the remaining carrots, as well as the turnips and potatoes, into cocottes (elegantly tapered football shapes) – alternatively, cut them into large diced pieces. Set potatoes aside in a bowl of water. Heat a skillet over mediumhigh heat and add carrots, butter, sugar, salt, and one cup water. Partially cover and cook for 10 minutes. Add turnips and pearl onions, partially cover, and continue cooking until liquid has evaporated and vegetables are tender (about 10 more minutes). Uncover and continue to cook, swirling skillet, until vegetables are golden brown (about three minutes). Add two tablespoons of water, swirl skillet to glaze vegetables and remove from heat; set aside and keep warm. • Bring another saucepan of salted water to a boil. Add the reserved potatoes, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until tender (about 15 minutes). Using a slotted spoon, transfer potatoes to a bowl and set aside. • To serve, put the lamb, carrots, turnips, pearl onions and potatoes into the sauce and cook until hot (about two minutes). Divide the stew between bowls. Garnish with parsley.

EAT TO YOUR HEART’S CONTENT With its exceptional hybrid fare and soothing setting, this café at Amwaj Islands goes down as one of the topmost for its brilliant hospitality.

T

he Lagoon at Amwaj Islands has some seriously hip and happening haunts serving good brews, delicious fare and everything in between. Among them, Primavera definitely takes the cake for a topnotch dining experience at any time of the day, with its bright walls making the space feel light and airy, while the turquoise furniture and bold, baroque motifs lend it a young, eclectic vibe. My dining partner and I chose to make the most of Bahrain’s transient pleasant weather and sat on the terrace to check out a menu dotted with continental, Indian, Chinese and Arabian specialities along with some unique dishes. Executive chef Jude explained that he wanted to bring an imaginative twist to seemingly mundane food. After a couple of suggestions, we placed the order and waited eagerly. The view from where we were seated was mesmerising, beneath open skies and overlooking the colourful terraces of the other eateries surrounding the Lagoon. The music in the background is consistently upbeat and mostly Khaleeji. Scores of young people occupied the neighbouring tables. Restaurant owner Ali Al Fawad, who joined us

www.womanthismonth.com

briefly during our meal, mentioned that it is quite a task finding a table on weekends despite the array of cafés round about. My strawberry mojito came first, fizzing with tart bubbles and sweet fruit, an ideal breezer for the upcoming months of summer. The starters arrived soon enough, and I stared and stared at what was put in front of me. Three giant mozzarella balls encrusted with cornflakes that looked like spiny pieces of art, and shrimps scaled with almond slivers made quite the entrance. Accompanying was the multivitamin salad with leafy greens, pomegranate, avocado and veggies drizzled in a tangy lemon dressing. The crunchiness of the flakes perfectly complemented the soft cheese, tasting especially good when dipped in the sweet chilli sauce that came with it. The nutty essence of almonds added a burst of flavour to the buttery shrimps, and the salad struck the right balance between sweet and savoury. I must admit, it made me feel less guilty for gorging on the cheese and shrimps. For the main course, we chose a giant plate of mixed grill and the Wow Salpicao, a beef dish made with garlic served with a side of rice and steamed vegetables.

The grill plate is every carnivore’s dream, with lamb chops, fish, meat kebab, and chicken shish tawouk. My favourite was the lamb chops because of the authentic, delicate marinade and fall-off-the-bone texture. The Wow Salpicao was enlivened with copious amounts of fresh garlic, cooked just right, slightly chewy and a thoroughly satisfying meal in itself. Needless to say, Primavera has gone down in my list of top restaurants in town. With its picturesque setting, it is the ideal spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It gets busy though, probably because service is swift and portion sizes are generous, offering great value for money while delighting the taste buds. Call 16 030-703.

Miles of tulip beds adorn the Keukenhof gardens during spring.

The Tulip Museum features giant exhibits explaining the history and signifgicance of the flowers in Holland.

Lying south-west of Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, this town is in full bloom with millions of hand-planted tulips, hyacinths and other spring blossoms at the famous Keukenhof. Known as the ‘Garden of Europe’, the 79-acre park showcases a landscape blanketed in a quilt-like rainbow of hues across its fields and windmill-dotted meadows. You can walk through the nine miles of exhibits and greenery or take a 45-minute ride aboard one of the electric-powered boats gliding along shallow canals, providing field-level flower views that are available only from the water. Later, visit the Kasteel Keukenhof, built in 1641, for its rich history and beauty, or the tulip museum for a detailed lesson in the history and effect of the flower on the economy and society.

REVAMPED FOR SUCCESS This sporty next-generation model has been redesigned magnificently and is packed with new technology to maximise driving enjoyment.

T

he BMW 4 Series has stood out ever since its launch in 2013, so it comes as little surprise then that the newest incarnation looks set to impress with its sharper styling and revised suspension. Restyled LED headlights replace the outgoing model’s xenon units and the new range is equipped with LED front foglamps as standard. The LED rear lights, fitted on the BMW 4 Series for the first time, give extra impact to the car’s powerful looks, while modified air intakes, line-specific applications and the new rear apron add further striking touches. The interior has also been revamped. The new electroplated detailing; chrome applications and centre console in high-gloss black give this model a high-quality feel.

Another highlight is the double stitching on the instrument panel, while three new upholstery colours provide even greater choice when it comes to personalising your vehicle. The two new exterior paint finishes – Snapper Rocks Blue and Sunset Orange – are available exclusively for the new BMW 4 Series models, and there is also a new model-specific wheel design for the Advantage, Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport equipment lines. The new BMW 4 Series Coupe and Gran Coupe come with a stiffer suspension set-up, delivering even sportier handling without any loss of ride comfort. Both the lateral and longitudinal dynamics have been improved, regardless of the load on

board – this applies not only to the standard suspension, but also to the M Sport suspension and the adaptive suspension. Meanwhile, high-performance tyres are available as a factory-fitted option for all models from the BMW 430d and BMW 430i upwards. All of the petrol engines and the fourcylinder diesel units fitted in the new BMW 4 Series range stem from the latest BMW EfficientDynamics family of engines and are equipped with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. A total of 12 model variants are available with the option of BMW xDrive, while the BMW 435d xDrive comes with the intelligent all-wheel-drive system as standard in Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe guise. The optional navigation system for the new BMW 4 Series now features an interface with large tile-style control pads that are even easier to use. These can be arranged as desired and display a constantly updated version of the linked menu content, making operation even more intuitive. The BMW 4 Series range can be optionally fitted with the multifunctional instrument display, giving the driver different visualisation options for all displays, depending on the driving experience mode selected. This is a model you simply must test drive. Euro Motors is the dealer for BMW vehicles in Bahrain. Call 17 750-750.

Nope, It’s Mine! Chanelmama blogger Ouiam Charkani El Hassani explains why we shouldn’t insist that toddlers share.

H

ave you frowned already and decided that this doesn’t make sense? Great! Now that I have your attention, let’s picture this together: You, at a coffee shop, playing a game on your phone and having some time for yourself. A stranger approaches you, out of nowhere, and snatches YOUR phone away from you! Yes, he takes away your phone, and you’re just watching him do it, without even blinking! How do you feel? Not yet? … OK, let’s upgrade the situation a little bit. There comes a giant person towards you, telling you in a voice full of judgement: “Oh honey, you need to share!” How will that make you feel? Exactly! You will be frustrated and maybe even a little mad! So why do we do this to our little ones? Those little human beings, who are just trying to figure out how this big wide world works? Why do we ask them to share their own belongings with strangers? (At this point everyone but their mums and dads, are strangers to them.) We unconsciously project our own judgments, criticism and ideas into the situation, and we tend to forget that those little ones do not see things the way we do; they don’t understand things the way we do. To them there is only

60

March 2017

one rule: I like it, then it’s mine! We make our kids feel something terrible will happen if they don’t share their toys with other kids, which by all means is not the healthiest thing to do. Think with me for a second. If we allow things to be what they really are, X has the toy now and he/she is enjoying it and having fun with it. Once he/ she is done he/she will put it down and Y can take his turn and have some fun too. Wouldn’t life be so much easier this way? Wouldn’t we spare ourselves so many tears and so much frustration? I have a three-yearold son, and by now all our friends know that WE DON’T SHARE! It’s not that he will never learn this very precious quality, it’s just that his little brain cannot fathom right now why he needs to give up something he likes so much so another child can have it, while he just watches. Kids have this extraordinary power to adapt to almost everything, yet they still use you – the parent/caregiver – as

a guide to their feelings and emotions, because they are sometimes overwhelming and the child needs to relate to their parents to learn how to react. So if the parent keeps their cool, instead of insisting that sharing is something that must be taught from an early age, and takes a step back to observe, remaining ready to react quickly in case of an emergency, that child might actually surprise you by handing the toy to the other toddler calmly and moving on to something else. Because the parent didn’t send these crazy signals making the child believe something terrible was about to happen, didn’t project their own feelings onto the situation, the result is that the child reacts calmly and peacefully. Parents are getting too involved nowadays. In every corner and at every hiccup, they are ready to interfere and solve the problem. While, in my view, what they really need to do is to stop feeling responsible for making this kind of interaction work and instead focus on just BEING THERE, and being open. As parents, we need to know that children will get frustrated at times, they will scream and cry, and that’s OK. In fact it is healthy and beneficial and it shouldn’t intimidate us. While establishing boundaries is vital in raising healthy, happy children, it is very important to know when to step in and when to step back. Ouiam blogs as Chanelmama. www.womanthismonth.com

PARENTING | tech kids

Finding the perfect gadget, app or website for children is trickier than you think. Instead of buying overpriced toys or devices, invest in inspiring and educational technology that will keep them engrossed while teaching them valuable life skills. WTM brings you a quick list.

LeapFrog LeapBand Tracker

The LeapBand is a wearable virtual pet wrist band which comes with several preloaded games to encourage your child to be active. It’s more than a pedometer as it aims to get them fitter while having fun at the same time. It’s like the gym meets the tech circus. Activity trackers are great fun for adults and an increasing number of children, who dig the statistics on how far they’ve walked, climbed and even slept, motivating them to lead a healthy life. Buy it from: www.leapfrog.com

YouTube Kids Circuit Maze

This is a puzzle board game which teaches your tots all about how circuits and electricity work, with over 60 different challenges to beat. They’ll need to move the pieces around and fit them in the right sequence to solve each puzzle; it’s a great way to develop problem solving skills. Buy it from: www.amazon.com

The app provides a family-friendly media space that allows kids and parents to quickly and easily find fun and age-appropriate shows, music, videos, channels and playlists. Videos featured are about sports, animals, crafts and more. The interface is designed with big buttons. Parental controls allow you to selectively filter content and set a timer so you can keep the little ones from being glued to the screen for too long.

need2know.co.uk Toca Nature

Kids of all ages can shape and interact with a virtual world, learning to plant trees and forests, raise mountains and create pools and rivers. Then they can explore the virtual realm they've created while making sure that the animals don't go hungry. It is a great app to make them familiar with the flora and fauna around them. www.womanthismonth.com

There is no more special bond than that between mums and daughters. Make the most of it, while they’re still small enough to approve, by taking inspiration from this special Mother’s Day collection from Carolina Herrera. But remember, if you’re going to go for this look, it can’t be too adult and keep the materials light and youthful so you’ll both look age-appropriate.

Star

Gazing Raphael tells us what’s written in the stars this month

Pisces

The odd thing about love is that you never know when it will strike nor how – if it so chooses – it will leave you. This is an even bigger issue since many of you are prone insecurity in relationships. The good news is that any concerns over a present relationship are unfounded and a loved one will demonstrate their affection in March. The prospect of a serious commitment may be put before you.

Aries

Cancer

Taurus

Just recently a few of you have been fairly outspoken – even harsh – with your opinions on others and when someone you criticise decides to bite back, you don’t take it as well as you could. This may lead to an argument and you could end a rather promising evening by making a fool of yourself. Bear this in mind, especially if you’re attending a function around March 10. Unexpected news could reach you by letter around the 27th and you will have to act quickly to prevent a major financial disaster.

Gemini

Have you been blowing your own trumpet again? It would seem so. No one loves the sound of their own voice as much as you and this month it seems your continual crowing about your personal achievements will rub people up the wrong way especially your work colleagues. Still, it’s not all bad. Their anger will be short-lived and once you’ve been brought down a notch or two, I’m sure everything will go back to normal. www.womanthismonth.com

twice about leaving certain responsibilities to people who possess good intentions but lack realistic ability.

Libra

The air is filled with mystery and intrigue as you get a sense something is going on behind your back. Rest assured, it’s not anything bad but your curiosity is likely to send you sniffing around for clues. If you can resist the temptation, there is a nice surprise in store. On the work front, an internal memo could turn up on your desk by accident and present you with an opportunity to gain the upper hand on a business rival, so long as you act quickly.

Scorpio

Your life is set to undergo a lot of changes in the coming months, most of them quite positive. There could be some developments on the work front that allow you to take a more hands-on-approach to your job. In a relationship, a partner will surprise you with news that could see you reaping greater financial rewards together. Finally, catching up with a relative at a family reunion will reveal things you were not aware of about one or both of your parents. Are you feeling a little insecure in a relationship this month? Not getting as much attention as you’re used to? Well, it’s time for you to put your foot down and make the man in your life realise just what a catch he really has in you. If you throw your weight around a little you’ll be surprised at the reaction you get. On March 7, a friend could ask you to baby sit and you could be in for a pleasant surprise.

horoscopes

Feeling a little distracted in the relationship stakes? It only takes the slightest of things to set those roving eyes a-wandering! Your loyalties will be put to the test this month when an old flame returns looking as stunning as ever and the opportunity to rekindle a romance is on the cards. Take a moment to think things through, haste could lead to hurt. Remember why the two of you split up.

Leo

Virgo

You could be in for a bit of a surprise as plans go a bit astray and you are left with egg on your face, much to the delight of your opponents. You’re going to find yourself in a bit of a fix and it will take cunning and a shrewd head to climb out of this situation with your credibility intact. When this incident blows over it might make you think

On occasions we can all turn to the most unlikely sources for assistance and a problem that just won’t go away may leave you desperate for a helping hand. Fortunately, there is a light at the end of the tunnel but when you discover who’s holding the torch, you may have to pinch yourself. You will forge a completely unexpected alliance and ultimately, though initially uncomfortable, it will work out better than you would ever have believed.

Sagittarius

Whilst things may have turned in your favour on the financial side, the improvement will only be temporary and for the long term you have to put some strict controls in place if you are to prevent things slipping into a serious decline. First and foremost your outlook needs to be reappraised and you have to start distinguishing between what it is you need in life and what it is you actually want.

Capricorn

Things haven’t really gone your way recently and you have suffered an unreasonable amount of stress over property matters and financial shortfalls. The after effects of several bitter disputes still linger and hold you back, but the road is about to turn in your favour. More than anything you shouldn’t be afraid to approach your family and friends for support.

Aquarius

When you look back on how things have changed over the last 12 months you’ll appreciate just how far you’ve come. However, the next few weeks are likely to be critical in determining your own personal development along with that of your partner as some crucial decisions are set to be made. An important phase of your life is waiting in the last quarter of the year and much depends on whether you have the courage to go out there and really grab it with both hands. March 2017
