any brands went back in time to find inspiration in the period of hippie mania, psychedelic prints and the beginning of the disco era. Loads of colours and a back to nature lifestyle influenced the catwalks of the spring and summer collections. Not only the typical patterns of the decade, but also its designs. Bell-bottomed trousers and wide sleeves temper the season’s style. Vests and fringes are also symbols of the trend which are explored this season. The cuts, brought back straight from the past, get a modern twist so we don’t end up in a time machine. Retro prints can be spotted in the catwalk shows of brands such as Louis Vuitton and Emilio Pucci. The hippie mood from the beginning of the seventies is revived by Alberta Ferretti and Chloe. Knee-high boots worn with fluid dresses are Tommy Hilfiger’s and Etro’s way to embrace the decade’s vogue.

Fashion Lover! I love the fashion trend spread you bring every new season! I like it because it is very straight forward. It is easy to understand what is going to be in and what we should pick when going shopping. The product selections you make take the fashion show concepts out of the catwalk and into real life. My favourite ones for this spring and summer are the seventies influence and denim fever, I’m very casual and this is a way of changing my wardrobe, but still following the looks that I like most. I’m definitely buying a denim jumpsuit or playsuit, they look so hipster! Many thanks, Amy.

Bollywood Star, Your cover this month looks amazing! Kareena Kapoor is so beautiful and talented. I am a big fan and I hope Woman This Month will feature more Bollywood actors. Kareena’s story is really inspirational. Although she comes from an illustrious family, she had to go to a lot of struggle to reach where she is today. I’m looking forward to her future films and her visit to Bahrain. Best wishes, Suhasini.

Sweet Tooth, Thank you so much for your The Bitter Sweet Truth The Bitter Sweet Truth article, it is very informative. Sometimes we don’t realise the amount of unnecessary sugar we ingest. We also should be more careful with the kind of food we offer to our kids. A lot of products that we think are not harmful for them, actually have an incredible amount of sugar, the juice boxes and yogurts for example. We must re-think kids’ lunch boxes, maybe you could do an article about it? Regards, Reem. A
It’s in your energy bar and your kids’ candy floss. And of late, has earned itself a bad reputation. Behnaz Sanjana turns the spotlight on the devil called sugar, making it, well, not so sweet.
s you rip open that sweet treat, your heart beats a tad faster. Your eyes become larger and your breath shallower. You anticipate pure pleasure and, when it hits your taste buds, you feel a rush of sweet satisfaction.
The story, however, is hardly delightful once that bar of chocolate or doughnut reaches your insides. Read on to know how and why.
THE REAL DEAL Dr Bassam Hana, consultant in endocrinology diabetes and metabolic disorders at the Gulf Diabetes Specialist Centre, says the human body needs sugar to convert into energy. Glucose is the sugar circulating in our bloodstream, and is either derived from food or produced by the liver during the night or after meals.
The sugar that we add to food is sucrose. “It is refined from natural sources (like beetroot or sugarcane) and comprises two simple sugars: glucose and fructose. This is what we buy off the shelves in the form of white or brown sugar. Contrary to popular belief, there is no difference between the two, except the colour!”, he says. The digestive tract transforms all the sweet stuff you munch on into simple sugar, which is transported into the bloodstream to reach the organs that need it to produce energy (brain, muscles, etc) and the surplus is stocked in the liver to use when needed. All sugar that we don't need to produce energy will be transformed to fat, eventually leading to obesity. Of course, this also depends on the insulin in your body.
94 April 2015
Researchers say that after you’ve wolfed down a sugar-laden treat, your brain resembles the mind of a drug addict. The sudden spike in dopamine levels reinforces the need for more, causing even more sweet damage. We often find ourselves reaching for that cupcake by mid-morning. “That is due to hypoglycaemia, aka low blood sugar levels,” says Dr Hana. If you find yourself needing a sugar fix way too often, you could blame it on genetics. This is true especially in the relatives of diabetic patients. It is also common with nervous individuals, smokers and caffeine guzzlers. Or even due to overstimulation of insulin secretion if you’ve gorged on a sugary breakfast. Dr Hana suggests having a wholesome www.womanthismonth.com

giant OMEGA clock can now be found at the Wangfujing Department Store in Beijing, China. Located on the city’s famed ‘Golden Street’, the clock ticks away every second and records all the meaningful moments in this metropolitan centre. The clock tower holds a bell that reverberates to the busy city lifestyle. The clock has imposing dimensions at 7.9 metres in diameter and with a three-metre-long minute hand and 2.15-metre hour hand. It has four dials and each side weighs more than four tonnes. The imposing timekeeper can be seen clearly from 100 metres away. The design of the clock recreates the style of the OMEGA Constellation with its iconic claws on a golden bezel. The Swiss luxury watchmaker was created in 1848 by Louis Brandt who assembled keywound precision pocket watches from parts supplied by local craftsmen. In 1894 his two

sons Louis-Paul and Cesar developed a revolutionary in-house manufacture for total production control. With its growing market, the company OMEGA Watch Co was officially founded in 1903 and its success was reinforced over the years to come. In 1917 Britain’s Royal Flying Corps chose OMEGA watches to be the official timekeepers for its combat units, the American army did the same in 1918. The brand has been the official timekeeping device of the Olympic Games since 1932. In 1969 an OMEGA was the first watch to reach the moon on Buzz Aldrin’s wrist. James Bond has worn the brand since 1995 and the list of celebrity fans is ever expanding. OMEGA today is synonymous with trusted watchmaking and finesse. www.womanthismonth.com

Bleached Rules
To celebrate our wedding issue and embrace one of the hottest trends of the season, we re-tune the all-white mode. Off to ivory!
RIGHT ON TIME
This kind of watch is usually seen as a sportive option and certainly goes very well with this kind of style. With the white trend on the crest of the style wave, this Omega watch can actually migrate to different looks. Even office-wear can benefit with the addition of this accessory, it will soften severe workday style and add an extra element to your clothing choice.
SUIT UP
Mango has a classic collection of well-cut suits that are a creative option for summer nights. The tuxedo is a great option to replace long gowns for special evenings. The all-white look is super trendy, however, you can also mix it with colourful tops or pick metallic accessories to innovate for a posh look.
SUMMER BREEZE
A white top is always a safe and reliable choice, the challenge is to find the right one that will give extra positive credits to your outfit. Summertime is maybe the best moment to bet on lace or ethnic options such as this Massimo Dutti piece. The cut is simple and speaks relaxed and laidback style, perfect to pair with blue cotton shorts and thong sandals.
22 May 2015
WALKING IN HEELS The seventies influence can be seen in bell-bottom trousers, hippie dresses, psychedelic prints and chunky platform sandals. Charles & Keith has a selection of perfect music festivalinspired sandals. The wood-like heels contrast with the white leather straps and look great when paired with jeans, wide trousers or simple flowery dresses. The platform compensates for the heel height creating a more comfortable experience.
www.womanthismonth.com
FOLLOW YOUR THE CATWALK LOOK
Spring and summer fashion shows brought a lot of different trends and compositions; however, white is apparently the strongest of them, as it can be spotted in most of the shows. Either mixed with other shades or reigning alone. Viktor & Rolf used the colour to paint some of the brand’s creative designs. Open-toe boots are the footwear of choice to accompany the collection.
CARRIER COMPANION Remember that black leather handbag you love so much and wear with everything? This season replace it with this Coach number. The white colour and silver studs are the highlights of this unmissable piece. It is a good pick to enhance your casual look and become your BFF during this spring and summer.

Style Radar Get inspired by the celebrities to pick your next wedding outfit. Long and glamorous or short and flirtatious, adapt your taste to the occasion.
ZOE SALDANA
Nude is a great colour if you want to wear something classic and in a light shade. Avoid white, so you don’t compete with the bride (which would be very unfair), opt for metallic accessories in silver or rose gold shades. The draped detail is an excellent trick if you want to hide the stomach area. Zoe picked this Versace dress to go to the Oscars.
LOAN CHABANOL
The French actress picked a Chanel number to attend the Chanel and Charles Finch pre-Oscar Awards dinner. The short cut is cute and a smart pick to show-off her toned and tanned legs. The golden accessories give the final tone to the printed dress and render the outfit ready for a day celebration or casual evening party.

ROSE BYRNE
If you opt again for the short length, this is another option. Rose wore head-totoe Lanvin from the summer 2015 Runway Collection to participate in the Danny Collins New York premiere at AMC Lincoln Square Theatre. A blue, black and gold sequin cocktail dress is a fashionable choice and, if the outfit has sleeves, black tights get the green light. However, if your dress is sleeveless avoid the dark tights.
SARAH HYLAND
The Modern Family cast member wore a SS15 Paule Ka dress at the occasion of the 23rd Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation’s Oscar Viewing Party, in Los Angeles. The graphic black and white, long dress is an option for audacious girls. This attire is definitely an eye-catching pick if you want to stand out for your fashionable style.
www.womanthismonth.com
DAKOTA JOHNSON
Are you an important guest? Choose a daring red gown to impress. The 50 Shades of Grey star wore this Saint Laurent number on the red carpet at this year’s Oscars. The eyecatching detail of her oneshoulder gown creates the wow factor. Don’t forget to keep accessories minimal when going for scene stealers like this.
RASHIDA JONES
With this gown, the actress shows how to turn casual floral into evening attire. A pattern with a dark background is perfect for a sundown function. The long dress is the ideal pick for the fashionista who doesn’t like the obvious solid and straight cut. Rashida attended the Vanity Fair Oscar party in this Andrew Gn frock.

PURE GLAMOUR
f the wedding reception you are attending begs for glamour and elegance and is taking place in the evening, go for a safe but chic option. The mix and match of silver and red works wonders! An attractive dress that enhances your body shape is an assertive choice. Pair it with red accessories, but don’t overdo it. Ruby earrings or rings designed with white gold and diamonds are eye-catching elements to add to your attire. You can team the elegant dress with red heels or clutch. Finalise the look with a neat bun and red lips to grab all the attention of the night, after the bride obviously! www.womanthismonth.com

URBAN CHIC
or a day wedding or even a beach celebration you must wear a hat! It’s not a rule, however, who wouldn’t want to? You can team it with flowing or bodycon dresses. If you’re tired of the same kinds of gowns, swap them for elegant, tailored trousers for a change. Avoid black and opt for contrasting hues. White and royal blue is a stunning combination. To complement and balance theses hues, add a third shade like this pinkish tone. The draping detail and texture of the top makes a big difference to the look. www.womanthismonth.com
T
PLAYFUL CHARM
he wedding is not really sophisticated or you are not one of the guests of honour, choose a knee-length number. A different colour or design will make all the difference here. This coral pick can be worn during day time or evening receptions. Just avoid pairing it with black accessories, it gives a heavy final effect (actually, avoid black at weddings in general). You can go for gold or be a bit more creative and style it with white and greyish hues. The idea here is to play safe, keeping a quirky mood. Wear a fascinator to add charm and funkiness to the outfit. May 2015

Multi-Cultural Potluck We all have one specific subject or special skill that we would love to share and learn more about. That’s exactly what these ladies from the Bahrain International Gourmet Club do! Our editor Fernanda Langhammer went to one of the meetings to get a taste.
Green soup called caldo verde
"P
eople think that we just meet to eat, but we actually learn a lot with each other,” says Janet Mujtaba, the president of the group. The ladies are from different nationalities and meet to share special dishes from the country they represent. Members come from: Indonesia, France, Egypt, Bahrain, Lebanon, Turkey, England, Brunei, Portugal, Brazil, Germany, USA, Palestine, Thailand, Pakistan, Tunisia and Mexico. Each lady is responsible to host one morning and present their cuisine. Meetings have a well-established structure, which I believe gives them seriousness and consistency. The host has to prepare a demonstration of two dishes (with a copy of recipes to be distributed to the participants), explain the recipes step by step and serve them amongst other delicacies. I was invited to attend one of the meetings and the country that day was Portugal. The house of the hostess had a great Portuguese feeling, with Portuguese songs in the background and curious ladies exploring the specially-decorated tables. The smell was to die for and the perfect prelude for what we were about to try. The hostess, Francine Medola, was

wearing a personalised apron. The environment was extremely welcoming and I almost felt part of the group (almost because I don’t really cook!). Francine is actually the latest addition to the club and started, officially, this year. She says: “I love cooking and after eight years of living in Bahrain, it was about time to share my knowledge and learn more about other cultures’ cuisines.” The easy conversation and happy chatting, demonstrate that, apart from cooking for each other, the ladies end up becoming friends, who share the same passion. I spoke to the founder of the group, Maria Cataldo Kanafani who is still very active, registering every moment with pictures and sharing them on social media channels. “The group was founded on February 25, 2003, as an informal social and educational club, for the exchange of culinary practices and related cultural mores as represented by a varied membership,” she says. Despite being a group of non-professional participants they all share the same love
for cooking and for learning more about it. And obviously, they all know how to cook pretty well. New members are accepted only if introduced by one of the existing affiliate. The new lady to be must be from a different country and participate in three meetings before being voted to become officially part of the group. The concept is not new to Maria, “I belonged to a club that had the same idea in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, while I was living there. It was founded by four ladies, friends and neighbours that, while having a coffee morning and helping each other to prepare a dinner party, had the brilliant idea of teaching each other their national food.” She then decided to re-create the group in the Kingdom with the same principles when www.womanthismonth.com
President Janet Mujtaba and vicepresident Suzanne Ibrahim.
Molotov flan
she moved here. “The group is not exactly the same, over the 12 years the members have changed, but we always find new interesting women who join with the same passion,” says Maria. The meetings are taken very seriously by members, who bring special ingredients from their origin country or region to share with their gourmet colleagues. The preparation requires planning and much more than ‘just’ cooking. You must be very good with words and have no shame to show off your cooking skills to an experienced audience. Francine did her demo full of details, catching all the ladies’ attention. She prepared a green soup and an egg white flan that we all watched grow fluffier in the oven turning a beautiful brown colour. Ladies had questions and added their own touches to the recipes while trying the raw ingredients. I could see that they were definitely enjoying themselves, and I can’t complain myself, www.womanthismonth.com
To start a club like ours you must be passionate about cooking, take it very seriously and, most of all, be committed everything was really exciting for me as well. “We usually prepare the food we learn at home, mainly if it is something we know our families are going to enjoy. The best part is that if anything goes wrong we can always talk to our gourmet friend about where it went wrong,
so next time it ends up perfect!” says the president Janet. The intention of the group is definitely to have fun while learning about new recipes and unusual ingredients. It is impossible not to wonder what is the group’s secret to keeping going for so long and Maria gives me the answer. “To start a club like ours you must be passionate about cooking, take it very seriously and, most of all, be committed,” she says. I do believe that commitment must be the key to put it together. Although, curious and vivid people with something to share must be the other magical ingredient in this formula that’s been working for a long time. Maria finalised by saying: “We have the necessary enthusiasm and passion about our national culture and cuisine, but also, we all have great generosity and hospitality in our hearts.” I’ll add my own thoughts, after a while living on this island and away from family and friends, meeting a group of people you share common interest with is essential for a happy life abroad. In my opinion that’s what these ladies do when they meet for around three hours every other Tuesday. It is an affirmation of who you are and where you come from. Sharing your roots, beliefs and preferences with people from all over the globe is one of the things that the Middle East offers us and we shouldn’t miss the opportunity. g May 2015

A Great Meal for a Great Cause Susanne Rea, project partner of The Rotary Club of Cairns Sunrise (D.9550), Australia, was in Bahrain and Apple Sharma caught up with this remarkable lady to talk about her quest to end polio.
T
he Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan 2013–2018 was developed in response to a directive of the World Health Assembly with a long-term strategy to deliver a polio-free world by 2018. English-born Australian Susanne Rea has been doing her utmost to bring awareness and raise funds for this notable cause. Having had polio herself at the age of four, this is one initiative that is very close to Susanne’s heart. “I joined Rotary 21 years ago when my youngest child went off to university and I was looking to put something back into the community,” she says. “I felt a certain need to expand my vision and coincidentally I was invited by a person I’d met in Sydney to join the Rotary. My Rotary career has largely been in fundraising. There’s a lot of opportunity and meeting people all over the world is very fascinating. “I was given the job of district polio chair, which means you have to raise funds and awareness from amongst the clubs in your district. I thought what do people like to do, they like to eat!” This led to the birth of Susanne’s brain child – “The World’s Greatest Meal to Help End Polio”. “We were required to raise USD1,500 per club. I was very keen on Facebook (FB) and so I decided to create an FB fundraiser and then, being a little bit ambitious, I decided to involve a past district governor I knew in England,” she explains. “We developed a small group on FB and now there are 11,000 people in the group.” Anyone can take part by donating a minimum of USD10. The procedure is very simple. Plan an event (a meal or dinner), fill out the “Before” form on the World’s Greatest Meal (WGM) website, have the event - enjoy, take pictures, raise funds and send them to The Rotary Foundation’s End Polio Now programme, and lastly, fill out the “After” form on the WGM website. Every event is reported on FB with full credit going to you or your club. A child can be vaccinated against polio for life for as little as US60 cents. The donation goes even further - from 2013 to 2018, every US dollar the Rotary commits to polio eradication becomes three dollars, thanks to 2-to-1 match funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
40 May 2015
Susanne Rea There have been 1,061 events registered in 59 countries and more than 56,400 participants worldwide. USD957,788.61 has been raised, a total of USD2,873,365.83 with match funds, which translates to enough money to buy more than 4,788,000 polio vaccinations! Susanne travels to various parts of the world carrying a torch that was the project of the Rotary Club of Madras (Chennai), celebrating the fact that India became polio free. With Susanne, the torch has travelled to Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Afghanistan to Dubai,
Egypt and now Bahrain. She has had 18 corrective surgeries to keep her moving and there’s no stopping her as she continues on her journey to raise awareness and funds for this worthy cause. When she’s not travelling, she says: “I like going out to lunch with friends, talking a lot and having fun!” g Visit www.wgmeal.com and the FB page Rotary: Wold’s Greatest Meal to Help End Polio for more information. www.womanthismonth.com

White Magic
Choosing the right gown for the big day is one of the most important tasks of the bride. Woman This Month highlights the latest trends in wedding dresses to leave you inspired!
CH Carolina Herrera brings new elements to its collection, the tulle full-skirt has a flower detail at the waist line that begs for attention. A deep V-neck is not an option for everyone, go for it if you have a medium-size-breast, too big will pop-out and too small will not fill out the shape.
The see-through chest area with delicate lace or embroidery is a trend to embrace. Monique Lhuillier has produced a graceful work in fine tulle, it’s almost as if the embroidery detail is attached to the skin or flowing by itself.
52 May 2015
This dress follows the body shape and the shoulder detail is a trendy element. Christos opted for simple lines, however it comes with a lot of detail. The lace attachment and belt on the waist give added shape.
Reem Acra goes for dainty gowns and shows-off the seethrough trend across the whole dress. The total lace frock is a hot trend and takes this already feminine attire into super ladylike mode. Tighter versions are very sensual while loose options give more of a fairy-tale mood. www.womanthismonth.com
Vera Wang is the queen of the original wedding gown designers. This year, instead of going for embroidery and lace, like so many others, she opted for tulle frocks playing with the fabric around the body as if feeling its movements. Marchesa innovates with a shorter version of its long number. Ankle length is perfect if you want to go for an unusual effect without being too wild. This dress is very feminine with its full skirt and lace sleeves; a fresh call on wedding gowns with a fashionable twist. This is a re-interpretation of the mermaid gown. The piece is for bold girls in grand weddings. La Sposa offers a selection of voluminous numbers. The lace application is more traditional here and the attention goes to the long dragging hem.
Structured fabrics and impeccable cut are the key in this gown from Oscar de La Renta. The strapless dress is definitely a girly favourite and the sequin application along the dress skirt and top, emphasises the outline.
You can find CH Carolina Herrera, Oscar de La Renta, Marchesa, Monique Lhuillier and La Sposa at the Esposa store in Dubai (www.esposagroup.com). www.womanthismonth.com

DEVJI
STRIKING BLING Jewellery has always been a big part of Indian weddings. And India’s diverse culture has helped wedding jewellery designs and styles evolve in amazing ways.
W
ith the exchange of designer ideas from all over the globe, you can expect fusion wedding jewellery trends. If you are planning to get married in 2015, you can take your pick from a collection of designs that can lend an incredible appeal to your wedding outfit. Devji predicts that fusion jewellery will rule the roost. An amalgamation of textures, colours and finishes inspired by rich traditions and heritages will be reflected in jewellery. Peacock motifs are traditionally a symbol of beauty and elegance. This year, this motif’s variations are likely to be one of the trendiest picks. The jewellery incorporates bright colours and accents which
perfectly complement wedding attire. If you happen to choose embroidered patterns for your wedding dress, the end result will be splendid. If you are a bride who prefers to choose wedding outfits in pastel colours, you could enliven your look with pearl jewellery. The purity and delicate appearance of this gem of the ocean has long been used to craft ethnic pieces. The traditional art of stringing tiny pearls with a gold setting is making a grand come back. The Tamanna pearl collection at Devji since 1950 uses the very same technique. The collection is on display at all the Devji since 1950 stores. Diamonds will be the hot pick

of the year for engagement and reception wear. Chokers and statement pieces will dominate the scene. Diamond chokers and chandelier earrings complement the bride who wishes to combine both modern and traditional looks. The Tara collection by Devji since 1950 includes a selection of diamond chokers. Every Devji offering is complemented by the four invisible labels of purity, quality, craftsmanship and value. The collections Tara, Tamanna, Tanvi and Aabhushan are a testimonial to the exemplary craftsmanship and design that is the trademark of the brand. To commemorate the advent of the bridal season,
new pieces have been added to these collections. From April 15 - June 25, Devji celebrates “Golden Beginnings”. Floral Fling
Maximise your floral budget by choosing in-season blooms. Here, find the best picks to go with your wedding date and theme.
SPRING This is the season of growth and renewal of new plant and animal life. Spring time on the island occurs between March and May. The popular picks for this season are: Anemone: the colours are white, pink, purple, magenta and burgundy and it has no smell. Though unscented, this relative of the beautiful Ranunculus is sought after for its vibrant hues. Dutch Tulip: widely available, the colours are: white, yellow, orange, pale pink, dark pink, red and purple. Its versatility and wide range of hues make it a great flower for weddings. It’s either unscented or has a mild sweet smell. Peony: coming in white, cream, peach, pink and burgundy, the fragrance is sweet and mild to very aromatic. The peony is showy and has a full-headed structure. A scentless variety is also available in autumn and winter. AUTUMN This is the season of the primary harvest. It occurs from September to November and it’s when the leaves change colour. The best flowers for autumn are: Sunflower: the colours you find are pale lemon, deep gold, orange, russet and brown. Bold and flashy, with raylike petals and disk-shaped dark centres, sunflowers are the best choice for informal, home weddings. Freesia: Available in most colours, except blue. It has a very sweet scent, almost fruity. A couple of stems are all that’s needed to make a bouquet sweet-smelling.
66 May 2015
SUMMER The hot weather in the Northern Hemisphere is a great time for floral growth. Bahrain imports most of its flowers, so for this period of June to August opt for these types: Hydrangea: The sumptuous flower has a big, bushy head and intense colours which are: white, green, pink, burgundy, purple and blue. It is scentless but a stem or two make a great impact. Casa Blanca Lily: the most popular colour is white, however these also come in pink and orange. They are beautifully scented and widely used at weddings. WINTER The cold weather stats in December and runs until February. Flowers blooming in winter are: Amaryllis: the colours are white, yellow, green, pink, red and burgundy. It has no scent, apart from the belladonna variety that has a mild sweet fragrance. Brides desiring maximum impact may choose this impressive flower. They are very rare and expensive. Pansy: Usually offered in a huge range of hues, these can be solid or bi-colour. Blooms have a dark centre known as a “face” and some varieties have a delicate aroma. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR You can always count on perfumed roses or striking orchids. Gerbera is another bloom that can be used in every season and is offered in a variety of shades. www.womanthismonth.com

HOW TO REDUCE WRINKLES
There isn’t a magic potion for eternal youth but, with the latest medical advancements, you can now say goodbye to wrinkles and look years younger.
A
s we age, our skin loses moisture and elasticity, making it prone to wrinkles. Bahrain Specialist Hospital (BSH) dermatologist Dr Rajshri Gachkal tells us all there is to know about wrinkles. “Wrinkles can be divided into three types: fine lines – delicate lines on the face; dynamic wrinkles – wrinkles in motion, appearing on the face while making expressions; and static wrinkles – wrinkles at rest that are always visible on the face,” says Dr Gachkal. Various methods of treatment include using Retinoid creams, Vitamin C and alpha hydroxyl acids (a group of natural acids found in foods) to minimise

fine lines. Dynamic wrinkles can be treated by Botox, which acts to reduce muscle activity, the effects last about three to 12 months, and Fraxel Laser - a ‘fractional’ treatment that allows the skin to heal much faster. Three to five treatments, spaced two to four weeks apart are recommended. Pelleve is a non-surgical skin tightening technology for wrinkle reduction. Two to three treatments, spaced four to six weeks apart are recommended. Thermage Laser claims to tone and tighten sagging facial and neck skin, whereas Mesotherapy (eye/face) involves multivitamin injections to reduce wrinkles and

under eye bags. Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) treatment (eye/face) is a
safe procedure that involves withdrawing a patient's own blood (10-20ml), processing it to produce PRP and then reinjecting it to erase wrinkles to create a more youthful look. Microdermabrasion is a far more superficial treatment. Treatment for static wrinkles involves fillers. “When filler is injected, it acts like an inflated cushion to support facial structures and tissues,” explains Dr Gachkal. “It also brings water to the surface of the skin to keep it looking fresh and supple. The effect of fillers lasts about a year or two.” Call BSH on 17 812-000 for more information.

LUXURY PEDICURE AND MANICURE The pool season is upon us and having perfect hands and feet to show-off is as important as the cool outfit you are wearing. Get your nails treated and beautified for the ultimate look.
W
ith modern facilities and fully-trained pedicurists and manicurists, Joz Salon & Spa fuses clinical knowledge and expertise with a variety of treatments for hands and feet. A refuge for pampering sessions and solutions for these areas. The beauty retreat has developed a menu that extends into orthotic assessments and treatments for foot-related medical conditions, offering a new approach to beauty rituals such as pedicures and manicures. The question is how you can breathe new life into wellhoned rituals? Those who have undertaken less successful nail treatments and suffered painful pedicures can confirm that it is indeed possible to have a best way of handling a specific treatment. Perhaps one of the first things to note is the knowledge of the therapist, she must be schooled and well trained. Communication skills are also another important element. The beauty therapist must be able to talk through each step of the treatment, describe what they are doing and why and also explain the benefits of each product they use. The Joz pedicure and manicure follow the
dry procedure, this means that cutting, filing, trimming and shaping of the nails and cuticles is done prior to any water being used. This way the therapist can identify more clearly
the areas of the nail and cuticle that need more attention. It is also less damaging and more hygienic. The products used such as oil, soak, serum, scrub and masks have been specially formulated for feet and hands. Most of them contain key ingredients such as emu oil, which has anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties. The salon uses nail polish from ESSIE, which has been chosen for its lesschemical characteristics. The quality of the service is another important feature. “The shine and smoothness achieved during the initial filing and buffing was outstanding, people would think they had many layers of polish on, even though I was still polish free,” commented one of the customers in the salon’s survey. Make an appointment at Joz Salon & Spa to get outstanding nails to show-off in in your sandals by the pool or on your wedding day. You’re sure of a nail polish that will last your entire honeymoon! The Newlyweds’ Nest One of the most exciting things about marriage is moving into a new space with your partner. Ankita Mamgain shares some ideas on how to get creative and make the most of your new abode.
N
o matter how many apartments you’ve occupied up till now, moving in with your spouse is a great feeling. From the excitement of house hunting to gradually filling in the space, it is an excellent opportunity to create your own unique cocoon that is warm and welcoming and reflects your individual personalities. RENT OR BUY? The sooner you get an answer to this question the better it will be. Buying is a great option as it is easier to keep a sizeable portion of your salary aside when you are still a couple as opposed to when you start a family. However, if you or your partner are planning to change your jobs, which might result in a possible move, or hoping to spend most of the next year travelling, then renting is easier. It is important to be cautious and

make the right moves when preparing for and searching for a home. While zeroing in on the new house, be practical about the amount of space – the amount you need right now and how much you might need over the next couple of years.
showpieces, picture frames, kitchen goods; it would be good to have items that suit your taste. Get creative with the space if it’s limited. Invest in a nice bookshelf if you two are readers or you can even get some cool
THE FIRST STEP When it comes to décor, let your new home be a mix of both of your styles combined into one unified look. And honestly, once you know the space you will be residing in, a really good place to start with is the wedding registry. It would be nice not to burden your guests with really expensive stuff. But things which you already expect to receive such as wall art, www.womanthismonth.com
posters framed and put them on the walls. If you two love to travel, incorporate souvenirs in the décor; maybe have a designated place for all memorabilia collected. Take inventory of your existing furnishings and decorative items to determine which pieces will blend well into the newly combined home. LOW MAINTENANCE FURNITURE While designing the new house, keep in mind the ongoing upkeep costs as well. Materials chosen should be easy to clean and maintain. It’s always better to use laminated furniture in areas of high traffic and moisture such as the kitchen. Be prudent when planning out storage space as, with time, you’ll only
need more room. It’s easy to get carried away in excitement but don’t be in a hurry to purchase everything in one go. Give yourself time to distinguish between your absolute necessities and things that you would just like to own. Add visual definition to an open space by tucking a large rug underneath the dining set or in the sitting room. Keep the furniture light so it’s easy to move it around which allows the space to be more dynamic. If you do not want to spend too much on a grand sofa-set right now, then include a funky chair in your seating arrangement, to add exuberance. If you want certain areas to pop, add a
vibrant rug or upholstery to draw attention. Choose leather over fabric for sofas, as it is easier to clean, and play with textures and paint for the walls. Preferably, opt for pastel shades for the bedroom and white, grey or ivory for the living room.
Do It Yourself Add a personal touch to your new home with this simple rope art name design 1) Take a wooden board or a flat tile and clean it well before you start. 2) Roughly sketch out your name on it so you know exactly how much rope you will use and what line to follow. 3) Get some high quality glue

and put it over this sketched outline. 4) Carefully take the rope along the glue line cutting it wherever needed to make the letters. Once dried place the wooden board or tile at a desired location.

SHED SOME LIGHT Strategically placed accent lighting can bring warmth and atmosphere to your space. Details at Palm Square, Budaiya, suggests a selection from Foscarini of Italy. YOKO – ANDERSSEN & VOLL As the name itself – formed by two similar but non-identical syllables – suggests, Yoko is a dialogue between two forms which unite to create a new balance. On the light body at the base rests a delicate diffuser resembling an iridescent bubble. Designed by Norwegian Anderssen & Voll, Yoko has brought the lights in the skies of the North to contemporary space. Delicate orange, green and violet hues bring vibrant nuances and reflections to its transparent surfaces.
LUMIERE – RODOLFO DORDONI Rodolfo offers an informed, elegant, creative interpretation of traditional lamps. An unmistakable, hand finished, die-cast aluminum base. A blown glass diffuser that is white inside and coloured outside. Lumiere is an object which, as its name suggests, is also principally a warm, intense and suffused light. An emotion from the far off past that is surprisingly suitable for today’s environments, whether intimate or collective.
RITUALS – LUDOVICA E ROBERTO PALOMBA The Rituals family of lamps is made up of three distinct but complementary forms which can be used separately or in infinite combinations and harmonious compositions in both table and hanging versions. Designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba, they are inspired by traditional Oriental lanterns. However seemingly ready to be lifted into the air, the Rituals lamps transpose the magic of rice paper into the refined physicality of blown, satin-effect glass diffusing a warm, intense light.
BINIC – IONNA VAUTRIN Binic is the name of a lighthouse on the coast of Brittany, the region Ionna comes from. In this area the sea is of enormous importance to daily life and so, when Foscarini asked her to design a small, coloured table lamp, Ionna was inspired by the windsocks of ships. It is an object that she has always been curious about and has interpreted through her sensitivity and creativity, together with the Foscarini design team. Call 17 593-616.

Raising Healthy Children! We are what we eat and from an early age it is important to learn good eating habits. This month, Ghada Salem talks about how to teach our kids to have a healthy lifestyle.
R
aising a healthy child is one of the daily challenges mums face. It is not only about what kind of food you give to your child. It is more about how to get them to adopt a healthy lifestyle and understand how their body works. Educating children about what "being healthy" means is the first step to raising a healthy child. A healthy child does not mean only eating healthy food, but also having a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, a child should be practising at least one sport three or four times a week, have limited screen time and enough sleep on a daily basis. Below some simple ideas to educate your child on why they need to be healthy: EAT IN COLOURS! For kids to develop healthy habits, it’s important for them to learn to love a variety of fruits and vegetables. They also have to learn to eat food prepared in different ways. This can be done by getting them to help in cooking their
84 May 2015
meals, explain what vegetables and fruits do for their bodies. You can say that vegetables and fruits build your fighter team to beat enemies such as bacterial conditions and diseases like flu! So the more you eat vegetables and fruits, the stronger your army is. They also need to learn that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. They need to fuel their army’s tanks and engines in the morning by eating a healthy breakfast. You can prepare scrambled egg with veggies, a smoothie of fresh fruits and almond milk, hummus with carrots, etc. It might also help to have a weekly meal plan designed by you and your children, you can write it down together. You can draw or print out the vegetables and fruits included in the weekly meals for them to colour or ask the little ones to suggest their favourite meals and have their names written next to them. STAY FIT Practice a sport or at least get your
child to ride his or her bicycle once a day. Being active makes them smarter. You can explain to them that when you exercise more blood goes to your heart which is the engine of your body. The increased blood flow also benefits your brain, allowing it to almost immediately function better. As a result, you tend to feel more focused. AFTER SUNSET! With the rapid growth of kids’ access to technology it has become part of most of mums’ lives to have children using Ipads or tablets. However, the usage of these devices should be limited as many studies show that they limit the child’s imagination. Technology, like everything else, has its good and bad side. A moderate usage will guarantee you get the good and eliminate the bad impact as much as you can. Try to train your kids that no devices are allowed after sunset. The minute the sun sets a child should be cooling down to get ready
for bedtime and a good sleep. Good apps for kids: AGED 6+ IXL: for maths and English language. Raz-Kids: interactive eBooks for children. Toontastic: your child can create their own animation-based films. Toca Kitchen 2: give your kids control of the kitchen with a no rules, stress-free environment, kids get to decide what’s for dinner. AGE 4+ Edu kitchen: for children who love to play in the kitchen. Edu kidzroom: logic learning educational games for toddlers and pre-schoolers. Tackling Spring: Allergic Rhinitis Even though it’s commonly known as ‘hay fever’, allergic rhinitis is not triggered by hay and does not cause fever, Dr Jinan Harith Darwish explains more.
I
f your child's stuffy nose and cough lasts more than one or two weeks he/she most likely has more than just a cold or flu. Allergic rhinitis is the most common childhood ailment caused by allergies. In children, allergic rhinitis is relatively uncommon before the age of three years and increases in frequency thereafter, reaching peak prevalence in adolescence. Allergic rhinitis is an allergic condition like asthma, meaning it tends to be a response to certain types of outside substances. One of the ways the body overreacts is by producing antibodies that signal your immune system to release histamine and other substances. These chemicals cause the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. These include frequent bouts of sneezing, a runny and blocked nose, itchy ears, the throat and roof of the mouth become red, itchy and swollen, watery eyes and headaches. Allergic rhinitis can either be seasonal or year-round. The most easily recognised form of allergic rhinitis occurs in a typical seasonal pattern, referred to as seasonal allergic rhinitis or hay fever. Perennial allergic rhinitis appears year-round. This condition is most common in individuals with allergies to indoor allergens which are present all year but often less dramatic and therefore more difficult to diagnose. Naturally, people who are allergic to
88 May 2015
house dust mites or to their own pets tend to suffer, no matter the season. In most people, an allergen - something that triggers an allergy - sets their symptoms off at about the same time each year. Spring attacks are usually due to tree pollen, while grass pollens dominate in the summer and weed pollens in the autumn. Most people with allergic rhinitis are sensitive to more than one allergen.
The best way to prevent allergic rhinitis is to avoid the allergen. But this is easier said than done, as it is not always possible to control the environment or to eliminate or avoid allergens, especially those that are airborne. If you cannot avoid your child's outdoor activities, then try to avoid peak times when the pollen count is higher. This usually happens between 5am and 10am, so allow your child to play sports in the afternoon to avoid discomfort. Treatment for mild symptoms is usually antihistamines taken orally. A corticosteroid nose spray can be tried if antihistamines are not working. An anticholinergic nose spray may also be used to help reduce runny nose symptoms. If allergen avoidance and medical treatment for allergic rhinitis are not effective, allergen immunotherapy may be an option. Allergen immunotherapy is also known as desensitisation, hyposensitisation, or simply as allergy shots. Small amounts of the allergen are injected regularly while slowly increasing the dosage. The hope is that the immune reaction becomes weaker and weaker as the body gets used to the presence of the allergen. Immunotherapy in itself carries the risk of anaphylaxis and should only be done by an allergist. www.womanthismonth.com
Language Area Purposes Children from three to six years of age are in a “sensitive period” for absorbing language. The Montessori environment is rich in oral language, listening to stories, reciting poems, singing and talking to others. Pre-reading activities along with Montessori sandpaper letters assist in the development of writing and lead to reading.
Why Montessori? Montessori Areas of Learning Maria Montessori pioneered the Montessori Method of Education early last century. In developing this method of education she combined a philosophy with a practical approach, based on the idea of freedom and independence for the child but within a structured environment. The Montessori Method takes into consideration the child’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social abilities and develops these in a specially prepared environment. What is most unique about the method is the detailed emphasis given to sensorial experiences, developing the five senses and providing a solid foundation for speech, writing and arithmetic. We recognise that children want to learn and it is vital that they are taught how to learn. Through the Montessori method the child will gain this ability, thus creating a solid base on which they can build their future learning. We want to help your child become a balanced, wellmannered and confident individual, and we believe the Montessori education system will give them a flying start at their next school and for life.
Early Learning / Practical Life Purpose The lessons of Practical Life develop a sense of and appreciation for order, self-confidence, independence and an ability to concentrate and follow a sequence of steps. Lessons of grace and courtesy are given to help children play and work together in a peaceful and caring environment. Content: *Transferring activity (spooning, grasping, scooping, tongs, tweezers) *Pouring activities (wet, dry - large and small pitchers) *Manipulative activities *Dressing skills- care of self (zippering, Velcro, snapping, tying) *Polishing and scrubbing activities *Care of environment (sweeping and dusting) *Snack preparation Sensorial Purposes The sensorial materials were designed to help the child to focus attention on the physical world exploring each of the senses with small changes to the characteristics of objects. Each piece of material is self-correcting and allows the child to make observations and assessments of their work. Content (five senses) *Sight - The properties of size, shape, volume and colour *Touch - The properties of size, shape, volume, texture, temperature *Hearing - The properties of sound, including pitch and volume *Taste - Recognition of differences between tastes: salty, sweet, bitter and sour *Smell - Differentiation of likeness and difference of aromas Mathematical Area Purposes The Montessori maths materials and lessons help children develop an understanding of mathematical concepts through the use of educational materials that make abstract concepts clear.
Content *Whole number concepts and numeration from one to ten *Sequencing and quantity of numerals from one to one hundred *Place values of units-tens, hundreds and thousands *Concrete exploration of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division *Identifying squares and cubes of number from one to ten through skip counting *Exploration of geometric shapes, time, measurement, fractions, and currency
Content Simple to difficult Lotto matching games *Rhyme - Opposites *Classification *Nomenclature *Alphabet-sandpaper letters and sound of letters *Vowel work
Why Montessori at The Children’s House? Finding the school that is the best fit for your child and your family can be stressful and overwhelming. However, an easy way to understand Montessori is to think of the school as a place where provocative questions are valued more than right answers. We believe that children who are encouraged to ask questions become confident and independent thinkers. They become creative and innovative leaders. They become life-long learners.
*Reading *Story writing

From Distress to De-Stress
As Wonder Women of the 21st century, we want to achieve, ace and acquire everything we set our minds to. But when life feels like a never ending stress test, it’s prudent to lower the pace, writes Behnaz Sanjana.
A
re you overwhelmed by the number of tasks on your to-do list? Do you constantly feel unable to stay ‘on top of things’? Well then, you are ambling about in the black hole called stress, just like most people around you! The USA documents that work stress causes 10 per cent of strokes. Three out of four doctor’s visits are stress-related and stress is the basic cause of 60 per cent of all human illnesses. That seems like reason enough to pack your bags for a relaxing get-away more often. Read on to know more. RECOGNISING STRESS Stress is a state of mental or emotional
92 May 2015
tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances. When in stress, the body reacts with a stress response – fight or flight. The stress response is the body’s way of protecting you. It helps you stay focused, energetic, and alert. In emergency situations, stress can save your life – giving you extra strength to safeguard yourself. “Stress can be beneficial if it drives one to perform better. It pushes people to be more productive at work or in their personal life,” says Dr Puja Malhotra, a practicing health psychologist in Bahrain. If you need to ace that exam or nail that presentation, stress is what will push you to do your best. But if the levels of stress shoot up
beyond one’s threshold, it can negatively affect one’s health, mind-set, work and relationships. The most common cause of stress these days is trying to maintain a work-life balance. Change; such as a new job, marriage, divorce or a serious illness can also be stressful. “Parenting issues, the onset of puberty in teenagers and even happy events like the birth of a newborn can bring about stress in people and their relationships,” says Dr Puja. Stress can manifest as increased anger and hostility, disturbed sleep, pessimism, lethargy and binge eating. “If not addressed in time, this can lead to anxiety and depression as well as serious maladies like cancer, high

Meditation is the art of being aware of what is. We become more skilful at being aware of our thoughts, filtering the ones we keep from those we let go of blood pressure, cardiac trouble, hormonal disturbances etc,” warns Dr Puja. UNLEASH THE FEEL-GOOD FACTOR When the brain perceives any kind of threat, our bodily systems make significant changes to gear up to tackle it. For instance, the brain releases endorphins to relieve pain. Muscle tension increases to prepare for quick action. Heart rate increases, pumping more blood to the extremities so you can fight or run. Breathing gets shallow and faster to supply more oxygen to the muscles and body tissue. “These physiological effects of stress are meant to be short term. Once the danger passes, the body should return to its natural state of internal equilibrium, functioning in perfect balance,” says Dr Amy Bowzaylo, clinical director and CEO of Intouch Integrated Chiropractic Spine Center. But what if stress is a constant companion, wreaking havoc to the body and mind? The answer is exercise. “Exercise decreases stress hormones like cortisol, and increase endorphins, your body's ‘feel-good’ chemicals, giving your mood a natural boost,” explains Dr Amy. She says that exercise helps release built-up tension in the body and is a platform for releasing emotional tension. It helps promote overall health and wellbeing, which can also lessen the experience of stress. Besides all the physical ‘wow’ effects of exercise, some forms of exercise boost selfesteem and enable you to be more social, which can also be a great stress buster. Dr Amy

advocates massage therapy as an effective way to deal with stress. A massage relaxes tight and painful muscles, increases the range of motion in the joints and improves circulation, thereby diminishing stress levels. STILL THE MIND Yoga brings together the mind, body and spirit. Besides stretching and toning the body, the deep breathing in all yoga postures helps reduce heart rate, blood pressure and tension in the body resulting from mental stress and creates a general feeling of wellbeing, says master yogi Weam Zabar, of Namaste Bahrain. Elaborating on the importance of breathing techniques, Weam says: “Yogis noticed that animals with longer breaths (such as turtles, elephants and pythons) live longer than animals with short breaths (like dogs and rabbits). The breath and the mind are connected. When you're stressed you'll notice that your breath is shallow and restricted, as opposed to longer, fuller breaths when you are relaxed or sleeping. So, by lengthening the
breath in times of distress, you will find your mind calming down. When you focus on your breath, you bring your attention to the present moment and you begin to disconnect from the worries that the mind creates. On similar lines, meditation is said to stave off stress and bring on inner peace. Weam says: “Meditation is the art of being aware of what is. We become more skilful at being aware of our thoughts, filtering the ones we keep from those we let go of.” Bad posture is another fall-out of frequent stress, and comes with its own aches and pains. When we ‘stress out’ and hold tension in the body, then that stress is stored in the body and remains there until we work through it and release it. Weam concludes that we need to stop taking life so seriously, spend more time doing things we enjoy and be able to laugh at ourselves, especially when things don't go our way. By keeping our hearts and minds open we will be able to fully enjoy the gifts life brings as they come. g

integrates brain function. When the brain is under stress, cerebral blood circulation is compromised. As oil is poured on the forehead in a continuous, rhythmic stream for approximately 30 minutes, you are guaranteed to be transported to a calm place in no time. The
herbal oils, which flow back freely, also nourish the hair and scalp before they are collected in a basin below. Once the brain is relaxed, more oxygen flows to it. The result is better brain function, mood stability and improved stress handling
ability. With each successive Shirodhara treatment, the mind systematically achieves an even deeper state of silence and further healing takes place. Regular treatments are said to increase blood circulation to the brain, improve memory, nourish the hair and scalp, reduce hair loss, encourage sound sleep and calm the body and mind. The treatment is conducted by highly experienced therapists supervised by an Ayurvedic doctor. The oils used in Santhigiri are specially medicated oils imported directly from Santhigiri production units in India. WHAT IS PCOS? Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a common disorder affecting women either in their adolescence or later in life and can be a cause of distress for many.

M
any women suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). So, what exactly is the condition? Royal Bahrain Hospital’s (RBH) internal medicine (endocrinology & diabetes) consultant Dr. Hecham Harb Dr Hecham Harb explains. It is a common endocrine system disorder among women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS may have enlarged ovaries that contain small collections of fluid, called follicles, located in each ovary as seen during an ultrasound exam. “PCOS signs and symptoms often begin soon after a woman first starts having periods (menarche),” says Dr Harb. “In some cases, PCOS develops later during the reproductive years, for instance, in response to substantial weight gain. “Irregular periods are the most common characteristic. On the other hand, elevated levels of male hormones (androgens) may result in excess facial and body hair (hirsutism), adult acne or severe adolescent acne and male-pattern baldness.” Causes of PCOS are unknown but many factors may play a role. For example, excess insulin might affect the ovaries by increasing androgen production, which may interfere with the ovaries' ability to produce eggs. “Another factor is heredity, if your mother or sister has PCOS, you might have a greater chance of having it too,” explains Dr Harb. “Having PCOS, especially if obesity is also a factor, may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol abnormalities, fatty liver, infertility, cancer of the uterus and mood disorders.” PCOS treatment generally focuses on management of the main concerns like infertility, hirsutism, acne or obesity. The first step is to look at weight loss through a special diet combined with moderate exercise activities. It is also possible that many medications might be prescribed to regulate the menstrual cycle, stimulate ovulation and to reduce excessive hair growth. Romantic Hideaways We all want the perfect start to our happily-ever-after story. Ankita Mamgain shares some ideas on how to make the most of your well-deserved honeymoon.
I
f you ask me what the best part about my wedding was, I’d say it was the honeymoon. Finally after months of running around, meticulous planning, the exhausting ceremony, loud relatives and constant smiling for the camera, came this ultimate reward. Luckily, my fiancé was just as excited about the holiday as myself and we got the trip planning out of the way well before we got started on the wedding, which in retrospect I think was a brilliant idea.
Budget is obviously the starting point; once you agree upon a figure or even a bracket, set your priorities, as to what’s more important; the location, hotels, activities, shopping or is it “all of the above”. Although this will be your first holiday together as ‘Mr & Mrs’, drop the pressure you’ve built around making it ‘perfect’. Remember to just relax and savour each moment for no matter where you are with your partner, it’ll be the best time ever!

MORE FOR LESS on’t let financial woes get in the way of your dream honeymoon. Those who are on a tight budget and want to get the most out of their buck need not despair. There’s a plethora of options for you; however intensive research and timely reservations are your best allies in this situation. You can choose a destination that’s not so far from the Kingdom or has frequent flights, such as Oman,

Morrocco, India, Southeast Asian countries or even European countries like Greece, Cyprus or Turkey, so you save money on the flight tickets. Read up lots of travel blogs in order to find the most cost-efficient way to stay in a particular location. You can find excellent home-stays and sometimes big hotel chains may be running enticing offers for newlyweds. Talk to the locals to get a more realistic picture in terms of places to visit and costs of
sight-seeing, instead of going to guides and travel agents who charge a lot more. Instead of having all three meals at a fancy restaurant, maybe grab something from a takeaway or the supermarket during the day when you are out and about and treat yourselves to a nice dinner at a restaurant. Maybe, just by some judicious planning, you can visit an exotic locale that’s considered expensive and that you’ve always wanted to see. www.womanthismonth.com

MID-RANGE MAVERICKS es you’ve kept aside a sizeable portion of your savings for the holiday, but beware of going overboard. People tend to add a few extra days or take frequent updates whenever offered just because, at the beginning, the sum of money makes you believe you can live in the French Riviera for a month. Choose a beautiful location that will give you high-end, moderate and budget staying and dining options. This way while sticking to your strict itinerary, you can allow yourself a few days to splurge and

if you realise the cash reserve is dwindling, you can switch to budget mode. Europe’s a great choice with its vibrant cities, culture and stunning architecture. Being only a few hours’ flight away from the Kingdom, the continent makes travelling easy and always affordable for midrange honeymooners. If you seek a tropical haven, resorts in the Maldives and Seychelles, contrary to popular notions, can come in under budget if booked in time.

THE BIG SPLURGE f your pocket runs deep, the sky’s the limit for you; so try to make it really special. Travel agents will offer cookie-cutter getaways – a luxury cruise or stay in a lavish spa resort, but we suggest you should get a little more creative than that. Look for exotic, unknown nooks that promise privacy and serenity. Be it a private island

experience in the Caribbean or a reclusive ski resort in the Alps, the word is bespoke, so remember to personalise the experience. There are many companies that specialise in luxury travel which can customise the holiday to your liking, from providing yacht charters to organising surprises for your spouse. Trade in a few indulgences for extra time if you can, for instance maybe four more days in the junior suite instead of just two in your luxurious villa. Luxury travel is all about extras, so check with your hotel about the services it offers, perhaps book a sensual couple’s massage followed by a glass of sparkling. Don’t make it all about luxury; keep an element of adventure or excitement. Maybe you can choose to go for a safari in Kenya or scuba diving on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. May 2015

Wedding Breakfast Said to be the most important meal of the day, breakfast is the one meal you shouldn’t skip on your big day.
T
he food served at a wedding reception is traditionally known as the “wedding breakfast”, dating back to the days when Christian weddings were celebrated at a morning church service and bride and groom would be fasting in order to receive Holy Communion. These days though, wedding receptions are more likely to be in the afternoon or evening so the traditional term hardly applies. But what about the bride’s own wedding (day) breakfast? With all that’s going on, pre-wedding nerves, not to mention wanting a flat stomach in the all-important dress, many a bride will be tempted to forego breakfast. One word. Don’t! Make sure to eat on the morning of your big day and you’ll be doing yourself a favour. A light protein-packed breakfast will give you the energy you need to keep going until you sit down to your reception meal and will help settle any jitters. If any more convincing were needed, no-one wants their wedding vows interrupted by a rumbling tummy. One of our favourite high-protein, easy to prepare breakfasts is smoked salmon with scrambled eggs and toasted wholegrain bread.
100 May 2015
Ingredients • 2 fresh free-range eggs • Knob of butter • 2 slices of crusty wholegrain bread (or other of your choice) • A splash of milk • * 2 slices smoked salmon • ¼ lemon • Sea salt to taste • Freshly ground black pepper to taste • **Fresh chives to taste Method • Whisk together the eggs and milk until light and bubbly. • Put the toast on to cook. • Heat the butter in a small pan on a
medium heat until melted then add the egg mixture. • Cook stirring continually and making sure no mixture is stuck around the edges of the pan – the mixture should start to form soft chunks surrounded by still quite runny mixture. It will continue to cook once taken from the heat, so make sure to undercook. • Butter the toast, season the eggs to taste and pour over the food topping with the salmon slices, plenty of black pepper and chives to garnish. • Accompany with fruit juice or a glass of bubbles to get your day off to the perfect start.
* Those who do not eat fish can substitute sliced avocado for an equally delicious and nutritious brekkie. ** Some prefer to use other green herbs as chives can be a little pungent.

The Lightbulb Moment Bahrain Foodie Marie-Claire Honeywill explains how she got started in the kitchen and why she never gives up on a recipe.
Kitchen disasters? You’re not the only one. Making caramel? Don’t forget the lemon juice.
I
t’s never really occurred to me before, since it’s always been such an intrinsic part of my everyday life, but It’s been brought to my attention a few times recently how intimidating the idea of cooking is for some people and that got me to thinking. It’s true, it can be intimidating but it needn’t be. I’ve always been a big fan of food but my passion for cooking only really reared its head three years ago, after a conversation with a close friend in a moment of retrospection. I was lamenting the fact that, while I was quite happily (well mostly) going through the dayto-day of life, I didn’t really have anything I was passionate about or have a particular talent for. Said friend pointed out that I spent a lot of time reading about and watching shows to do with cooking and asked me why I didn’t concentrate more on that. And as simple as that, I had my Eureka moment. My mother has always been an amazing cook so I picked up a few bits and pieces from her over the year, and, along with the inevitable lessons learned from years of doing my own cooking, I feel pretty confident I can www.womanthismonth.com
A lot of cooking is trial and error and believe me when I say I have a lot of error! work out most things culinary if and when the need or want arises. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t have my disasters in the kitchen. I do. Often. A lot of cooking is trial and error and believe me when I say I have a lot of error! But then that’s how I knew my friend was right when they told me that cooking was my passion, because with most things that prove too much of a challenge, I’ll shrug them off and move onto something else. When it comes to cooking though I won’t stop until I’ve gotten it right. I lost count of
how many cheesecakes I made before I learned how to bake them without them cracking while they cooled and my first attempt at making something as simple as caramel took me almost two hours and five attempts until I finally got the sugar to stop crystalising. I’ll be honest, it occurred to me to give up after attempt number three but I can be stubborn sometimes and I was darned if I was going to let some sugar and a bit of water beat me so I turned to Google for help – the solution was as simple as two drops of lemon juice, in case you were wondering. I guess what I’m trying to say is that cooking is actually quite simple when you know what you’re doing and when you don’t there’s always Google and YouTube... Oh and my “Bahrain Foodie” facebook page of course! And if all that isn’t enough, you can always tune into the AM to PM show on 96.5fm every Wednesday between 10 and 11am, where I talk to fellow foodie Dominic Miles about all things food. Bon Appetit! Star
Gazing Looking for some answers? Raphael tells us what the stars have to say.
Sagittarius Nov 23 – Dec 21
You’re really not yourself at the moment. Something is bothering you and people have noticed the change. Part of the issue is that you need advice but you’re just not willing to take anyone into you confidence, which is a shame because you might find things becoming a lot easier if you did. Consider airing what’s worrying you with a loved one or family member. Financially, it’s been difficult. Just hang on in there!
Capricorn Dec 22 – Jan 20 Taurus Apr 21 – May 21
Right now you are probably feeling frustrated because you are sharing your home life with others and the knock on effect is that a relationship may have come under strain because of it. Fortunately, in May, much is likely to change as the prospect of a new home and a settled base will be yours once again and this will help you plan for the rest of the year in a more confident manner.
Gemini May 22 – Jun 21
One of the major problems with your sign is that you just won’t be told, no matter how much people try to help you. With this in mind, perhaps you should think about turning over a new leaf and consider accepting the good advice presented to you in relation to work this month. It might help ease you through a troublesome time in your life and believe me; the smoother things can go in your career right now, the better.
Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 23
Virgo Aug 24 – Sept 23
You are a shrewd operator when it comes to money and an investment you have been watching grow regularly for some months now is about to mature prematurely, so don’t delay in cashing in whilst you can! On the family front, you may feel pressured to attend a function but once there, you are likely to enjoy it more than you had expected. You may even bump into a long forgotten flame from the past.
Aquarius Jan 21 – Feb 19
Libra Sept 24 – Oct 23
Pisces Feb 20 – Mar 20
Just lately, many of you will probably be thinking that life is all about work and not much else, such have been the demands of your career since the turn of the year. Whilst it is perhaps fashionable to knock the fact that you are busy, there is no doubting you will see the benefits in your pay packet and the truth is that things won’t stay like this indefinitely.
It’s been a long time coming but finally, after what has felt like an eternity, you will be turning the corner on a long term project and closing up matters in a very positive fashion. However, you won’t have much time to “sample” the rewards on hand because another project is also set to turn in your favour and before you realise it, you will find yourself dizzy from the opportunities on hand.
Leo Jul 24 – Aug 23
Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 22
Just recently you have been hampered by a terrible feeling of dissatisfaction – pretty much in all areas, but in particular to your role in a relationship. General pressures have taken their toll on a long-term partnership and made you question things that you never thought about before. Whether this is a good thing remains to be seen but there is every indication that you are going to start making a few changes.
102 May 2015
Bad news often arrives like an unwelcome visitor: when you least expect it and saddled with baggage that makes it difficult to shift quickly. This month you are going to have your hands full following a traumatic family episode that, whilst not directly connected to you, affects many of those close to you. Throughout, you will be looked upon as a rock to help relatives negotiate this trying period and you will surprise yourself at how well you deal with the issues presented before you.
A clear-out at home is going to lead to the discovery of some interesting material from your past that sets your mind thinking of a lover you have lost contact with. Many of you will have moved on emotionally but there will be a few who are still tempted to consider the “what if” scenario. However, you should resist the temptation to dwell too long on memories or entertain the possibility of seeking out this person again.
2015 is going to provide you with at least one singularly outstanding event this year that will really make it stand out above many others of recent times. You may already have an inkling of what that might be but if you don’t, try not to worry because overall the reality is likely to be a very positive one. It all really starts to come into effect from June so not long to go now! It’s going to be a mixed period for many Pisceans over the coming two months, with some of you enjoying the positives that this year brings whilst others are more likely to struggle. For any of you who have money worries, the chances are that they may start to improve. On the flip side, those of you who are currently enjoying a good period can look forward to continued prosperity for some time to come.
Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20
A lot of you are just trying too hard when it comes to romance and after another disappointment, it might be worthwhile taking a breather from the dating game. On the family front things have been a little frosty just lately, mainly because you’ve upset a relative and they haven’t forgiven you for it. Now is probably a very good time to extend the olive branch and think about patching things up. www.womanthismonth.com
