EDITOR’S NOTE
The only women's magazine distributed with the GDN
ovember is here telling us that 2015 is almost ending, so if you have any pending New Year’s resolutions, now is the moment to clear them out. Take a look at the plans you had for the new year (that is getting pretty old by now) and see what you’ve done, what is still pending and what went in a completely unexpected direction (I can include myself in this last one). Our issue this month is, just like every month, packed with information on interesting subjects to cater to the modern woman resident of Bahrain. Our fashion pages bring the best trends to be incorporated in your autumn and winter wardrobe. The season hasn’t properly arrived on the island yet, but the fashion express is not going to wait, so have a look at our pages for inspiration on your next shopping trip. If you want to try a new way of dressing, check out the ‘Get the look’ pages for ways to embrace Bohemian style. We are very proud of the interesting interviews we bring to you in every issue. This month, I spoke to Sameera Al Bitar, a Bahraini swimmer who participated in two Olympic Games representing her country and is now starting a whole new career in triathlon. The talented artist Areej Rajab visited us for a delightful chat about art and how to work and rise three kids. Our editorial director Liz O’Reilly found a group of amazing women called the ‘Glam Squad’, commanded by Lauren Kravchenko, that helps cancer patients to lift their self-esteem. Our Homes section was specially created showing the influence of one of this season’s fashion trends, ‘the new Victorian’ on your home décor. Vintage pieces and inspirational grand elements are the designs to look for. We’ve also taken a look at some of the best homes destinations on the island, if you’re looking to update your living space and there’s a page dedicated to beautiful and practical home appliances. Ankita Mamgain unveils mystic places to visit in our travel section. Funny enough they are all located in South or Central America, do you believe in coincidences? Dr Jinan Harith Darwish talks about the importance of taking your child for a health consultation not only when he/she is sick. Regular check-ups can tell a lot about your kid’s general health.

Arctic Explorer Thank you WTM for sharing the truly inspiring journey of Amal Al Saffar. There’s something incredibly empowering in seeing her picture holding a banner as a Bahraini woman for breast cancer support, standing proud in the Arctic. For most Middle Eastern women, the possibilities in life are quite limited. What Amal did is quite unimaginable and I congratulate her for reaching to the top, quite literally. Adverse circumstances can either bring out the best or the worst in a person and Amal channelled the loss of her loved ones in an amazing way – all at the tender age of 23, when most people are still ‘figuring out life’. More strength and power to her! Shayla.

The Trend Setter I am always excited to see the fashion pages of the magazine every month and in the October issue, with the autumn and winter report, you have really outdone yourselves. This is perhaps the most comprehensive style guidebook ever with everything mentioned and laid out so clearly. I read a lot of fashion magazines, but even some of the biggest international ones leave you utterly confused. And even if you learn about a trend, how to incorporate it in your look and where to shop is something many miss out on. Many thanks Fernanda Langhammer and keep up with the great work! Maryam. Dreamworks This article was a fun and informative trip into the dream world. Behnaz Sanjana’s account of what goes on in our minds after we snooze away is quite insightful and shows that we might think we are resting but the mind is still at work. I wasn’t aware of the fact that we forget 90 per cent of it after just 10 minutes of waking up. I am seriously doubting what I remember from or think I saw in certain dreams I’ve had. Camilla.

ESSENTIAL FRILLS Accessories are a big thing this season. Invest in eye-catching pieces to transform your autumn and winter looks. We selected six must-haves; check them out!
SINGLE BLING
The one earring trend could be spotted in many AW 2015 catwalk presentations, such as in Christian Dior’s show. One long piece is all you need to create a cool effect to complete your trendy new seasonal wardrobe. If you don’t feel comfortable with an empty ear, you can wear a stud or any other smaller earring to embrace this cool style.
BLOCKY HEELS
Who doesn’t love it when fashion meets functionality? Not only does the block heel add an instant trendy highlight, it’s also comfortable and easy-to-wear. These are the shoes to take you through the day from work to a laid-back evening with friends. Miu Miu painted them in bright colours and gave them a retro feeling to please trendsetters and fashion lovers.
LACED-UP
The coolest shoes of the season must wrap your feet, sometimes going all the way up to your knees. Sky-high sandals or flat gladiators are the sexiest choices, while stacked kitten heels are the fashionista’s favourite. Jimmy Choo went ultra-feminine with a collection of sharp highheeled pieces to be worn with a killer dress.
16 November 2015
VINTAGE STYLE A retro element that is back to its full glory is the brooch. They might remind you of grandma’s wardrobe and you could be feeling a little reluctant to include them in your day-to-day wear, but remember Prada brought them back to life and brooches can give a striking final touch to any outfit. A boring, black dress, can be transformed with the addition of this unusual accessory.
www.womanthismonth.com
OUTSTANDING BANDING
Large belts are a clever way of highlighting your waistline and this season you can copy a trend that was featured in many catwalk shows. Marni took sober hues and used this trick to create a clever effect paired with a turtleneck top (another hot trend this season), giving the impression of a longer silhouette.
www.womanthismonth.com
BOX-IT Old box trunks must be the inspiration for these trendy carriers. Louis Vuitton being the precursor with its stylish, monogrammed luggage, gave a twist to the concept and turned it into an everyday bag. Brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander Wang, Chanel and Versace followed the trend with boxy samples in their collection.

REESE WHITERSPOON
The blond actress attended The Broad Museum Inaugural Celebration in Los Angeles wearing a black and white Saint Laurent frock. The graphic shift dress is a simple, however striking choice. It can be a good pick for an everyday stroll, if paired with flat shoes. But it can also be transformed into evening gown when paired with heels and a clutch.
SOPHIA BUSH
The activist and actress was spotted carrying a white and burgundy Coach handbag with chain in pebbled leather while attending the NY Global Citizen Festival in New York. The orange-fringed pencil skirt gives the perfect autumn vibe to the look and creates an interesting contrast with the black top and shoes.

GIGI HADID
The American model participated in The Daily Front Row’s third annual Fashion Media Awards in New York wearing autumn 2015 Hilfiger Collection. She paired the red sleeveless velvet and crepe dress with black velvet strappy sandals. The ‘carwash’ flap pleats are a mini-trend spotted in many autumn and winter 2015 fashion shows such as Dior and Suno.
RACHEL WEISZ
The English-born actress picked a Gucci black and white wool and silk crepe dress from Cruise 2016 for HFPA/Instyle’s annual party at the Toronto International Film Festival. The classic colour combination was the perfect pick to paint the dress which shows some Victorian inspiration in its elegant details.

CHLOE MORETZ
The young actress wore a pair of black goose bump nappa Stuart Weitzman sandals to attend the Coach Women’s Spring 2016 show at New York Fashion Week. She picked a stylish floral patterned top and red leather skirt to compose her outfit. The purple shoulder bag is the odd one out in the look, but it doesn’t really ruin the final effect.
DEMI MOORE
The American actress, forever remembered for her role in Ghost, attended the Salvatore Ferragamo 100 Years in Hollywood Celebration held at the brand’s newly unveiled Rodeo Drive boutique in Beverly Hills, California. Her black mid-calf dress was enhanced by a red shawl making the button detail pop.

The style is updated, without losing its appeal, with the addition of a wide-brimmed hat and aviator sunglasses, bringing you back to 2015. The dress is an important element in this free-spirit style. It can be long or short and in intense colours and prints or simple white cotton. ringes are usually spotted on cowgirl outfits, but these frills are also essential add-ons for boho flair. They’ve been on-trend for a couple of years now and if you’ve been avoiding them, it’s time to take the plunge when putting together the perfect avant-garde look. Light blue jeans and earthy tones work together to create the natural palette, so typical to this style. rilled skirts are a must-have item of the season and they’re easily transformed into a lavish outfit. The mid length is stylish by itself so when paired with knee-high boots it creates serious fashion drama. However, it also looks amazing with stilettos and high-heeled sandals. VINTAGE RE-VISITED This brand offers a selection of eye-catching pieces in its new collection. The main inspiration comes from the reinvention of classic designs, turning them into trendy pieces.
D
une London is a footwear and accessory brand that invests in fine finishing and classic and contemporary designs. This season, the pieces took inspiration from modern references, whilst using revitalised textures and colours. Shape and texture is still heavily influenced by the seventies while deep dark tones make a dramatic day-to-evening collection.
THE ‘70S EDIT An uptown feel can be noticed in this collection with silhouettes and colour palette reflecting this era. The rich autumn hues of warm honey, chocolate brown and fox red transform the classic designs. The footwear comes with playful details such as fringes and tassels. Rounded saddle bags in rich chestnut and berry croc encapsulate the spirit of the seventies, while shoulder bags in framed slouch and satchel styles are musthave pieces. Saffiano leather and brushed nubuck are the textures to adopt in classic totes. The bespoke details include quilted accents, circular clasps and braided shoulder straps. MIDNIGHT RENAISSANCE The emphasis here is drama! Created with deep luxurious tones such as midnight blue, Bordeaux red, dusted metallic and shimmering lurex. Intricate embroidery is enhanced with detailed stitching, weaving in metallic threads, gemstones and beads for a super glam effect. Statement embellishments can be spotted in block heels and straps. Ladylike frame bags follow the same dramatic shades and are finished in polished patents for added allure. Cross-body numbers are adorned with jewellery-inspired materials and intricate beading for opulence whilst metallic box clutches are updated with Perspex clasps. The new element introduced in this collection is the intricate brooches.
MODERN ICON A contemporary collection is introduced through clean, soft lines and minimal profiles. The inspiration comes from a palette of winter blush, dove grey and ice blue to explore the sense of newness. The footwear is presented in soft leather structuring loafers and ankle boots. Thick cross-toe straps appear as a key styling element. Hardware features are minimal, simple and versatile. Buckles and trims add interest and reflect a contemporary movement. The handbags follow the same minimal elements with hidden popper fastenings replacing noticeable zips and twist locks. The must-have carriers are the fold-over top-handle totes, framed and structured shoulder bags. Trapeze and hobo styles feature multicoloured leather panelling. Oversized and intricate or svelte and spare, the season’s best bling is artfully chic and party ready.
MIRROR, MIRROR The metallic finish is the key element in this style. Covering statement-making blocked heels, leather boots, embellished slip-ons and suede over-the-knee numbers, the shiny metal adds extra sparkle to your look.
WARM AND FUZZY This season opt for toasty warm footwear. Designed for form and function, boots come with faux-shearling lining or sporty Velcro kicks with a sturdy lug sole. PEOPLE | cover story
Sporting Spirit Our editor Fernanda Langhammer spoke to Bahraini athlete, Sameera Al Bitar about her swimming career and her new venture in the triathlon world.
S
ameera Al Bitar is a 25-year-old athlete who has dedicated her life to swimming competitions since a very young age. Her passion led her to represent Bahrain at two Olympic Games and many other important competitions. The sport also gave her the opportunity to study at George Washington University in USA and travel the world. Now she’s decided to expand her path into triathlon, a sport that involves swimming, biking and running. She tells us more. Woman This Month (WTM): When did your passion for swimming start? Sameera Al Bitar (SB): It started at a very young age when I joined a friend at a swim session. Before I knew, I was on the school team, which led me to join a club team to improve and get a bit more training. I realised then that it was something I enjoyed doing. At the age of 12, Bahrain formed its first women's squad, which I joined and have been swimming with since then. I wouldn't consider swimming my profession as I was never at the elite level to quit school/work, as my times weren't fast enough. WTM: In which major swimming events have you represented Bahrain? SB: I have been competing for the past 13 years, and during my swimming career I represented Bahrain in two Olympic Games (Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008), five world championships (Barcelona 2003, Montreal 2005, Melbourne 2007, Rome 2009 and Barcelona 2013) and the 2006 Asian Games. As I am new with the triathlon team, the major competitions which I’ve competed in consist of the Asian Beach Games (Pukhet), the Pan Arab Championships (Sharm El Sheikh) and, more recently, the World Championships held in Chicago. WTM: Can you describe the feeling of participating in the Olympic Games? SB: The two consecutive Olympic Games were by far two of the most memorable experiences I've ever lived through, it was a different world. Living at the athletes’ village, making new friends from around the globe while learning about new cultures, watching top athletes train and compete was a true eye-opener. Being able to walk at the opening ceremony was the highlight of both games as it's a truly

have a swimming pool as they were rebuilding the current Olympic-sized pool we use today. A training facility was not available all the time, as many of the clubs that do have a training pool didn't have a heater/chiller so at times it would be either too hot or too cold. Another challenge was the lack of competitions held in Bahrain because there aren't many females that practise this sport so most of the competing was done at an international level.
remarkable feeling walking in the stadium with all the teams. Competing at the Games was extremely nerve-racking I must say, you get too caught up in the environment, there are cameras everywhere, a huge crowd and extremely fast athletes. You learn a lot out of such experience that you really can't get anywhere else and I'm very fortunate for having the opportunity to go twice.
WTM: And what were the best things that happened that you could highlight during this journey? SB: Once you dedicate yourself to a sport from a very young age, you learn life lessons, which are extremely valuable for the future. This journey has really benefited me as I travelled the world and learned about new cultures. I've met people from different backgrounds and I also learned life skills which include time management, responsibility, dedication and commitment to name a few.
WTM: What were the main challenges you found in your path? SB: One of the biggest challenges was the lack of facilities; at one point, the association did not
WTM: You are now re-directing your career www.womanthismonth.com
and competing in triathlon, what made you opt for a new sport? SB: After completing my swimming career in university, it was difficult to train the required hours while working, so my times weren't really improving. Therefore, I was just swimming to keep fit (an hour five times a week) while participating in aquathlons (swim/run) and run races for fun. Then I decided to finally switch and get into triathlon, as it seemed like a growing sport that everyone spoke highly of. Since it involved swimming, I didn't feel I was completely changing to a new sport. It's been a year since I started in triathlon and I'm really enjoying it and I'm still learning, as there's always something to improve on in this sport. WTM: What are the biggest personal challenges in this new sport for you? SB: Triathlon is quite challenging due to the fact that it involves three completely different sports, therefore my challenge is in the bike and run leg, since I've never trained for these sports before. Learning how to draft, assembling/ disassembling my bike and changing the tires are among some of the challenges I have faced since starting triathlon. As for running, I've had to change completely my technique because I was doing it wrong so I’m adapting to the new practise and training to drop my time significantly to be at the elite level. WTM: How do you see the triathlon scene in Bahrain? The sport is clearly getting a lot of attention all over the world with high-end competitions; do you see it growing here as well? SB: Triathlon is really growing in Bahrain and I'm very impressed to see so many women getting into this sport! The nice thing about it is that age doesn't matter and anyone can do it. You just need the right attitude and
Triathlon is really growing in Bahrain and I'm very impressed to see so many women getting into this sport! effort to train. Crossing the finish line is more important than anything else is. Thankfully, with the support of HH Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Bahrain hosted its first international triathlon race last December. Two more races are coming up soon and, along with the annual races Bahrain Road Runners hosts, we are seeing a great increase in the triathlon community in Bahrain. Drive on Zallaq road in the early mornings on the weekend and you will be shocked as to how many people have started biking; it's a very nice feeling! WTM: What are your plans and expectations competing in this sport? SB: My plan is to keep training to improve my bike skills and running technique while trying to gain more experience competing at the Asian level with hopes of making the top 10 in Asia in the next two years. WTM: What is the routine of an athlete? SB: Usually professionals in this sport train three times a day six times a week. However, since most members on our team have other commitments, whether it’s school or work, we train twice a day. We have a swim session in the morning and during the afternoon we alternate between bike training and run/gym sessions
during the week. The weekend usually includes long bike rides and open water swimming. WTM: Would you see yourself doing anything else apart from working with sport? SB: I have a double major in finance and sports management; therefore, I will start exploring opportunities in the finance field to see if it’s something of interest. WTM: What is your advice to those starting out in sports in Bahrain? SB: For a Bahraini woman starting her sports career as an athlete, the opportunities are limitless and you really have opportunities available that are not offered anywhere else in the world. More people need to take advantage of that because people want to have what Bahrain offers its female athletes. It's a matter of dedication and commitment and you will be rewarded with unforgettable experiences and lifelong lessons. g One word answer: - Biggest Achievement? Olympics - Mountain or beach? Meet the Glam Squad Make-up artist Lauren Kravchenko tells Liz O’Reilly how a simple post on Facebook has led to an organisation that’s becoming a force for good. Work in progress. Hima, Lauren and Emma.
M
um-of-one Lauren has been in Bahrain for a year with her US Navy husband and for all that time she has thought about putting her skills as a trained make-up artist to use, to give back to the community. She says: “One day I just decided ‘Right, I’m going to do this’, and I put a post on Mums in Bahrain on Facebook saying I would like to offer my skills to women who have lost their hair through illness or cancer treatment. I wanted to help them feel good about themselves again. “I was absolutely overwhelmed by the response. So many people got in touch saying they too wanted to help, with things from donations to offering their skills.” In fact, such was the initial feedback that Lauren set up a Facebook group – Feeling Gorgeous Glam Squad – which now has 75 members, both Bahrainis and expats. Supporters range from health and beauty professionals to others who simply want to keep in touch and show encouragement. Two of the first to sign up were nail technician Hina Sameer and image consultant Emma Hatfield, both of whom were keen to offer their services alongside Lauren. Members donated items such as wigs, scarves, picture frames (for the ladies to capture their special day) and cash, that has been used to buy supplies such as false eyelashes. Others handed over gently-used make-up which Lauren has sanitised for use on clients –
26 November 2015
This was something I was ready to do just by myself, to give back in my own way. But the response has been amazing this aspect is particularly important since the women’s immune systems may be compromised through their treatment. A group of ladies at the US Naval Base also joined in and put together boxes of toiletry products which are to be donated to cancer fighters. Within a couple of weeks the Glam Squad had us first client, and Lauren says: “It was a truly uplifting experience for all of us. “It was a lady who is fighting breast cancer and is in the process of going through chemotherapy, so she has lost her hair. The look on her face when she saw her eyes with lashes again was so emotional and touching; it made her look like herself again. Emma was able to show her some scarf techniques and, because of
the scarf donation, we were able to give her the scarves so she can do them herself.” Lauren also teaches make-up, so she makes sure the ladies are able to recreate her looks after the pamper session, giving them confidence to go forward looking their best. She says: “From talking to people, I was amazed to find that there was not something like this available for cancer survivors and those fighting the disease. The impression I’m getting is that, in local culture, it is something that’s not discussed, so I hope our group can send a message of awareness as well as helping women to feel gorgeous again. “This was something I was ready to do just by myself, to give back in my own way. But the response has been amazing. Cancer and its treatments can rob women of their feelings of femininity. What we want to do is give them a special day, to give back some of the strength you lose when battling this disease.” There are two more clients lined up, one of whom was put in touch through her healthcare provider. And though Lauren herself will only be here for another year or so, she hopes the group will be well enough established by the time she leaves that it can keep serving women long into the future. g Lauren can be contacted on 36 664-652. www.womanthismonth.com

Talking Colours Woman This Month spoke to Areej Rajab, a talented Bahraini artist and mum of three, who expresses her talent abstractly by creating movement with an array of hues.
A
reej is one of those ladies that draws your attention with her natural beauty. Her big, expressive eyes make you want to know more about her life and achievements. What intrigues you more is how this beautiful woman creates equally beautiful pieces. It all started a long time ago, when she was only three years old and discovered the world of painting. Her aunt Sameeha Rajab, an old-school Bahraini artist, was an inspiration and a supporter as she went about fitting art into her life. Her passion for the subject was a hobby until she decided to transform it into her career. Being a mum who decides to study can be a challenge. However, she managed to complete her education at the London Art College. “My kids are 12, nine and six and they are always around in the studio; they love having a mum that is a painter,” says proud Areej. “Kids are natural with art so it is important to stimulate them from a young age.” Areej’s art takes the form of abstract expressionism and she never names her paintings, simply numbering them. She explains: “I believe that each of us sees something different when looking at my creations, so I don’t like to limit the imagination. My art can be exactly what each pair of eyes sees, so everyone can have their
My advice to those that are starting is to take a step at a time. You can’t start out abstracting; you have to understand what you are doing first own interpretation.” And highlighting the personal nature of her work, she adds: “My art is like my diary, I paint what I feel.” The materials she uses are canvas and paper. Undeniably, her trademark is how she expresses herself with colours. Acrylic paint is her world and colours play the main role in her creations. The explosion of shades takes you to a different universe that automatically touches

you. Areej communicates with colours and you want to be part of this world. In addition to her exhibitions and the creation a new collection, she gives workshops and art classes. “My students come from different areas and I believe that it is never too late to learn. Sometimes you can learn the basic concepts and then create beautiful art work; you don’t have to be born a talent,” she says. “My advice to those that are starting is to take a step at a time. You can’t start out abstracting; you have to understand what you are doing first. Abstracting is taking out the details, so how can you do it if you don’t understand the whole?” Like many of us, she loves Bahrain; however, she admits the art scene here is still not ideal. “It would be nice if we artists could have a place to meet regularly to exchange experience and showcase our art. “The lack of opportunities sometimes makes some artists lose their identity to please the market.” This is a course she warns against. “If you go with doing what the market wants, you will lose your own creativity,” she says. Areej has exhibited her work in many places in Bahrain, such as the Gulf Hotel and the Ministry of Culture building. She has also had her work displayed in the UK, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Her main clients are individual collectors, restaurants, hotels and bars. “With the expansion of social media channels, the visibility of my work has increased and it’s been easier to develop my network with art enthusiasts from around the globe,” she says. Areej is preparing a new exhibition that again follows her main inspiration: the colours. The new collection also features feminine curves and fabrics. Stay tuned! g You can find her page on Instagram: @areejrajab. www.womanthismonth.com

Marine Magic
The ancient mariner complained, “water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink”. Ankita Mamgain dives in to find out how could something almost toxic when ingested, be so beneficial for the skin.
E
ver wonder why after sitting in a nonsalt bath your skin starts to wrinkle and prune but for the same amount of time spent swimming in the sea it doesn’t? Well, this is because salt reproduces an environment in balance with our skin making it retain most of its moisture. The benefits of seawater stretch far beyond this and were recognised by ancient civilisations. This boundless mineral wealth has once again hit the limelight in the form of luxury skincare products that deliver marine goodness. Dead Sea products and Thalassotherapy are perhaps the two things that immediately come to mind when the topic of ‘sea for skin’ is approached. Thalassotherapy is the therapeutic use of the ocean, its climate and marine products like algae, seaweed and alluvial mud. The name comes from the Greek words thalassa (the sea) and therap (treat). The principle behind this is repeated exposure to sea air and immersion in warm seawater, mud, clay and protein-rich algae, which helps restore the body's natural chemical balance. Seawater and human plasma are very similar. This makes absorption of nutrients such as magnesium, potassium, calcium sulphates and sodium much easier through the skin. These are said to boost the body's blood and lymph circulation, accelerating the metabolism
32 November 2015
Thalassotherapy is therapeutic use of the ocean, its climate and marine products like algae, seaweed and alluvial mud and promoting the elimination of toxins. Magnesium and calcium, improve hydration by strengthening the barrier function of the skin. Bromine has anti-inflammatory properties, calms and relaxes muscles and skin nerves. These minerals, in addition to other components of unrefined salt, have been classified by scientists as "natural moisturisation factors" for the way they support the skin's water balance. The Dead Sea gave a massive boost to the skin care industry when researchers revealed its extraordinary skin care benefits. A number of independent studies show that Dead Sea minerals reduce roughness and inflammation, improving overall skin health. Another remarkable gift of the sea is seaweed. From cleansing to toning, moisturising to
Thalasso therapy repairing, it has earned some serious kudos in the skincare world. For centuries Northern European and Asian cultures have harvested it from nutrient-rich ocean waters to alleviate dry, irritated skin, reduce inflammation, and detoxify the body. On a cellular level, it helps to prevent damage to amino acids and protects the cell’s membranes. This results in protection against free radical attacks and, hence, anti-aging. Seaweed extract can also ‘re-organise’ the cell membrane structure to reverse cell damage and restore cells to a healthy state. Living on an island it would be unfair if we didn’t get a chance to indulge in this marine goodness. Lucky for us many leading spas offer treatments that use seawater and minerals. www.womanthismonth.com
What are some of the most intrinsic qualities one associates with the sea, when it is not showing its tyrannous side that is? The lapping sounds of waves, tranquility, serenity and overall azure calmness. Nestled inside the Diplomat Radisson Blue Hotel Residence & Spa is a space that emanates these very attributes in addition to offering a host of mineral goodness harvested from the sea. The Diplomat Spa has harnessed the best of nature and offers it in the forms of ambience and service at this facility. A low-lit area, with air infused with invigorating lemon grass oil, the spa cuts you off from the busy surroundings of the Diplomatic Area and transports you to a peaceful haven. It is so calm you soon find yourself speaking in whispers. Upon arrival I was given a tour of the sprawling facility with separate men’s and women’s sections. Everything’s been kept very Zen, promoting the synergy of natural elements such as cobble stones, dark wood and flowing water. The treatment rooms are named after flowers and are spacious cabins with en-suite bathrooms. A refreshing touch is the windows that
www.womanthismonth.com
overlook the garden, giving the sense of being close to nature while ejoying your treatment. The glass is, of course, tinted from outside, ensuring complete privacy but, for those not comfortable with the idea, the blinds can be pulled down. My therapist, Urmila, escorted me to the changing room and showed me my locker which contained a fluffy bathrobe and other accessories. Changed and snug, I headed towards the treatment room. She then explained what the treatment, Sea Holistic, was all about. The 60-minute session was to combine the benefits of
sea minerals and lavender with Thaistyle massage stokes, that resulted in absolute bliss. Sea boluses are small bundles of muslin containing marine salt crystals and dry lavender leaves that are steam heated. A dry mixture, the boluses actually feel course on the skin when slid on, awakening the dermis as they are rubbed along the body. After this, a mildly fragrant lotion is massaged on to the body, followed by a second round of steaming boluses. The products used are by French brand Phytomer, a leader in marine-based beauty therapy. The massage works on multiple levels as the coarse boluses exfoliate your skin, while the steaming mineral penetrates it, revealing a radiant layer; the massage strokes release muscular tension and stimulate the Sen Energy lines. The warmth and fragrance of the pouches relaxes your mind. In other words this treatment is
the most powerful sleep inducer you can find. I heard Urmila telling me that it was over and almost replied back “five more minutes, Ma”. Well, I felt refreshed, limber with all the knots kneaded away and had a glow, as noticed by some of my colleagues back at work. What: Sea Holistic Where: The Diplomat Spa Favourite Feature: The feeling of being away from the city and amidst nature and the almost hypnotic smells that send you off to a wonderful slumber.

t Joz Salon & Spa you will find various body contouring treatments to help you accomplish your mission. The newest body care appliance is the G5 massager. A piece of equipment that can be used in a variety of applications to massage different body parts. It stimulates the lymphatic system, alleviating problems such as puffiness, fluid congestion and the appearance of swelling. “The G5 massager helps to ease lumpy and congested skin and results can be noticed after one session. The skin texture and appearance will be much smoother,” says a Joz Salon & Spa slimming expert. The G5 works on breaking down fatty deposits and cellulite, dispersing it along with excess fluid through the lymphatic areas. This process allows an instant inch loss and a detox effect as well as an improvement of the skin’s elasticity, collagen flow and blood circulation. Joz Salon & Spa uses its own secret methods to achieve the best results combining slimming and draining cream, cellulite emollients containing essential oils and a medium-high thermal gel. The process helps to provide skin toning and firming with a reduction in cellulite and fatty tissues. The results are an instant reduction of body measurements making your tight clothes more comfortable. The salon recommends a package of six to 10 sessions over a three to four week period for optimum results. G5 has an even better affect when done in conjunction with other treatments such as:
INCH LOSS BODY WRAPS This treatment is designed to work with the G5 Massage System and body shape products. It incorporates a target-specific G5 treatment either in the front or back of the body followed by a thermo pack to eliminate any unwanted toxins and fluid congestion. CELLULITE BUSTER What is a better way to expel toxins and burn calories than to sweat them out in a steam room? After the G5 massage, the client goes to the steam area to drift off into relaxation whilst burning calories and melting body fat. DETOX AND G5 TREATMENT After an all-over G5 massage targeting the specific trouble areas, a thermal wrap is then pulled over, covering the whole body from neck to toe for 20 to 30 minutes. This procedure helps to release toxins, stimulate cellulite reduction and improve skin elasticity. As the body gently heats up, the body fat starts to melt.

At Charm Salon & Spa they offer a pregnancy back massage that, according to Desiree Fermin, the salon’s masseuse, can be done after the fifth month of pregnancy. She also told me that her grandma used to do this treatment for all the pregnant ladies back in her village the Philippines, which is where she learned this ancient technique. To my delight, I’m more than five months and could enjoy it. She started by putting me on my side in a comfortable position so she could access my back. The pressure was not that strong but enough to relieve soft knots and work on the constant lower back pain, which I believe all pregnant woman must feel when the belly starts getting heavier. After finishing with my back and shoulders, she turned me and rubbed my belly with gentle strokes. To finalise the pampering session she gave me a foot massage that perfectly complemented the relaxation. t Gulf Pharmacy you can find an array of products to fight the ageing process. Creams, lotions, serums and a new product that is revolutionising the beauty market, PURE GOLD COLLAGEN®. A golden liquid infused with highquality collagen, hydrating properties of hyaluronic acid and vitamin C that boosts the transformation of lysine and proline into collagen. This element helps to preserve the skin’s firmness and elasticity and hyaluronic acid can boost skin’s moisture content, reduce inflammation and help prevent moisture loss. Essentially, the outer layer of the skin is extremely difficult to penetrate and, as a result, the chance of active ingredients reaching the dermis of the skin through topical application is very limited. The solution comes in cosmeceuticals (a marriage between cosmetics and pharmaceuticals), the fastestgrowing segment in the natural personal care industry. One of the newest cosmeceuticals is ingestible collagen. We all know the basic information that the more collagen we have in our skin, the less wrinkles we are going to have, as it actually plays a key role in providing the structural scaffolding for cells, tissues and organs. Collagen is often considered to be the glue that holds the body together and is vital for strengthening blood vessels and giving skin its elasticity and strength. The skin is subject to deterioration caused by dermatological disorders and environmental conditions such as pollution. The natural ageing process starts around the midtwenties and is accelerated by sun

exposure or other lifestyle factors such as smoking, stress and lack of sleep. As we age, the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in the skin gradually decreases which causes dehydration and a dull complexion, increasing the signs of ageing. Slathering your skin with topical creams and ointments helps protect against the elements, but the best way to maintain moist, beautiful skin is to nourish it from the inside out. Drinking eight to 10 glasses of purified water each day is important, but it’s also important to replenish diminishing stores of collagen and hyaluronic acid. Without the proper levels of collagen and hyaluronic acid in the upper layers of the epidermis, your skin appears dull and wrinkled. Drinking a 50ml bottle of PURE GOLD COLLAGEN® can result in increased smoothness, softening the appearance of wrinkles in six weeks. Once consumed, PURE GOLD COLLAGEN® is distributed to the dermis (the deeper layers of the skin) and results in the multiplication and stimulation of fibroblast cells (collagen-making cells in the connective tissue of the skin) to produce more collagen and hyaluronic acid. IMMEDIATE VISIBLE RESULTS
Liz O’Reilly got a leg-up in the battle against the dreaded cellulite with a Slimsonic treatment.
O
K, contrary to what some men believe, it might well be every woman’s dream to eat whatever she wants without piling on the pounds. But, since the laws of physics tell us that’s an impossibility, then the idea of a treatment that can, with minimal fuss, actually smooth out the orange-peel skin which affects more than 90 per cent of us, has to come a close second. When I was invited to VLCC at Zinj to try out the Slimsonic treatment, I had no idea what to expect but, and yes I’m bragging, having recently lost more than 10kg, I was more than happy with the idea of a boost for my nonexistent exercise regime. Slimsonic uses a combination of suction, radio frequency waves and lymphatic drainage to combat stubborn fat and, though therapist Prasuna offered to work on my mid-section, I decided my thighs were in most need of help – the measurements she took at three spots on each leg more than confirmed my opinion. The treatment started with the G5 vibration machine, similar to a very vigorous massage, which is used to warm the skin’s layers and get the circulation going, then after around 10 minutes it was on to the Slimsonic. Three quick shots of suction are applied
in a grid across the target area, the machine multitasks by applying heat and radio frequency waves at the same time to penetrate the seven layers of skin and into the subcutaneous fat layer below. I must admit, I found it quite uncomfortable, particularly on my inner thighs where there is, naturally, more loose flesh. The sensation is like being repeatedly pinged with an elastic band, stinging rather than painful and the session is quite short so it’s definitely not unbearable. After a couple of minutes Prasuna upgraded to four shots, which I’ll confess had me gripping the sides of the bed. But again, this only goes on for a few minutes and, in anticipation of results, I bit my lip and endured. Next she used the same machine to perform drainage, rubbing up and down with firm, even, heated strokes to release the toxins

removed by the suction and radio frequency blasts. These are naturally eliminated from the body. Prasuna finished with a gentle massage using anti-cellulite oil then it was time for the moment of truth as she took my measurements. I was amazed to see that, in just one treatment, I had lost a total of 4.5cm on my right thigh and, a very respectable, 3cm on the left, which was already thinner due to scar tissue from an earlier operation. Don’t get me wrong, I’m never going to be sylph-like and I personally the find the thigh-gap phase quite unattractive (not to mention unattainable), but with this treatment, I can actually see the end of cellulite in my future and, though I did have a few bruises the next day, I’ll be heading back to see what the recommended five or six treatments can achieve. www.womanthismonth.com

A COMMON COMPLAINT
Dr Issa Kawalit - nephrology, kidney transplant and hypertension consultant at Royal Bahrain Hospital, answers questions on a common female problem, chronic-recurrent urinary tract infection.
W
hat is a recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI)? These are infections of the urinary tract that do not respond to treatment. They may either continue to affect your urinary tract despite getting the right treatment, or may recur after treatment. A UTI can affect any part of your urinary system. When an infection is limited to your bladder, it is usually just an annoyance. However, if it spreads to your kidneys, you may suffer from serious health consequences. Why are women at much greater risk of urinary tract infection with recurrent episodes? Generally, urinary tract infections are more common in women. due to the basic human
Dr Issa Kawalit
anatomy: first, the urethra is close to the rectum in women; therefore it is easy for bacteria to travel from the rectum to the urethra. Also, in women, the urethra is shorter than men. So bacteria have a shorter distance to travel to get to the bladder causing infection. Once you start getting recurrent UTIs you should consider looking for the underlying cause such as kidney stones.
What are the symptoms of a UTI? A lower urinary tract infection affects the urethra and bladder – usually presenting with frequent urination, bloody/dark urine, a burning sensation while urinating and lower abdominal pain. An upper urinary tract infection affects the kidneys and is usually more serious with additional symptoms
such as fever, chills, nausea and vomiting. When should my primary physician refer me to a specialist? If you have had two or more culturedocumented bladder infections during a sixmonth period, consider seeing a specialist – to determine the underlying cause. If we can’t find a clear underlying cause, what is the treatment? • A long-term, low-dose antibiotic for as long as six months to two years; • Intermittent or self-directed antibiotic therapy; • Vaginal oestrogen therapy; • Drinking plenty of liquids (cranberry juice may have infection-fighting properties that help prevent UTIs). The Bad Bugs Germs have been around since time immemorial, but Superbugs have recently come up on the medical radar. Behnaz Sanjana finds out more about the urgency to develop new antibiotics and why you should think twice before you pop that antibiotic pill.
G
erms. They’re everywhere – in your home, at the gym, in your car, and yes, even in your purse. But what are these invisible microbes that wreak havoc with our wellness and our everyday life when they decide to make our body their home? Dr Rama Krishna, surgeon at the American Mission Hospital Manama and chairperson of the hospital’s Infection Control Committee, spells it out for us. “In simple layman terms, all bad bacteria can be labelled as germs.” Dr Krishna emphasises on simple measures like hand hygiene, personal hygiene and minimising contact with infected patients to steer clear of germs. “On the personal front, appropriate vaccinations, a healthy diet and lifestyle keep germs at bay. From the community perspective good sanitation, availability of potable water and a clean environment are important,” he says. You may run in the opposite direction when someone around you sneezes and reach for the hand sanitiser several times a day, but bad bacteria can thrive in the least expected things that you use in the course of your day. And no, we are not talking of the toilets or kitchen sponges, which are obvious addresses for invisible bugs. Think of your favourite

On the personal front, appropriate vaccinations, a healthy diet and lifestyle keep germs at bay handbag, your makeup, your cell phone and the steering wheel and floor mats of your car. They are breeding grounds for germs and could do with some regular disinfecting. Avoid resting your purse on floors of public places like toilets and restaurants. Disinfect makeup with an alcohol solution and discard products after their expiry date. A quick wipe of the steering with antibacterial wipes and frequent washing of the floor mats should keep the germ quotient in your car to the minimum. Where there are germs, there are antibiotics. “Antibiotics are chemical substances that kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria,” says Dr Krishna.
This makes them an important part of a doctor’s medical arsenal. However, he goes on to say that they are not always necessary and will only be of any use in infectious diseases – that is, diseases caused by harmful bacteria. They will not act against illnesses caused by a virus – the most common example of which is the common cold, sore throat or the flu. Like all other medicines, an overdose of www.womanthismonth.com
Not many new types of antibiotics have been developed in the past decades, so we have to make do with whatever we have available antibiotics has harmful effects. “Since these are chemical compounds, they will cause changes in the body – gastrointestinal problems, allergic reactions, and prolonged use may cause liver or kidney problems,” warns our expert. But besides the odd upset stomach, the repeated, indiscreet use of antibiotics has other serious repercussions. “They also kill the good bacteria in the body as they cannot distinguish between good and bad bacteria. Injudicious use of antibiotics causes the bad bacteria to become more powerful and dangerous and hence, difficult to treat with antibiotics.” In other words, bacteria become ‘resistant to antibiotics’. They can survive the affects of an antibiotic, refusing to leave the human body. This has earned them the moniker ‘Superbugs’, which is really as scary as it sounds. The World Health Organisation and
www.womanthismonth.com
knowledgeable healthcare workers are trying to educate medical professionals and the general public that the more we use antibiotics, the greater the chance that bacteria will become resistant to them so that they no longer work on our infections. Superbugs don’t just affect you; they can spread to other living beings in close contact with you and are very difficult to treat. As the primary initiator and chairman of the Antibiotics Stewardship Programme, Dr Krishna notes that some doctors do not think twice
before prescribing antibiotics for cases where they may not be needed in the first place. “Also, patients, especially parents of sick children, pressurise doctors to unnecessarily prescribe antibiotics,” he says. “Obviously they want the child to get better in the shortest possible time.” But unfortunately, antibiotics are not the wonder drug laymen think them to be. Bacteria are smarter than humans and can learn how to break down chemical compounds in antibiotics. Dr Krishna exhorts people and medical practitioners to be more judicious in their use. “Not many new types of antibiotics have been developed in the past decades, so we have to make do with whatever we have available. If bacteria become resistant to the antibiotics that we currently use, it is going to pose a very grave situation worldwide,” he says. He even cites about several cases, wherein patients’ lives have been lost due to doctors being unable to effectively treat their antibioticresistant infections. By using antibiotics less often we can slow down the development of resistance to them, which buys time for pharmaceutical companies to develop new antibiotics. Consider alternative remedies that can help your sickness. In case an antibiotic is absolutely essential, make sure you take them exactly as prescribed and for the entire duration they are prescribed for. In the fight against Superbugs, a little prudence goes a long way. g November 2015

Home Sweet Updated Home
BHS
It’s that time of the year when we’ve returned from the long summer break full of plans to redecorate, revamp and otherwise update our homes. Whether you’re an expat looking to spruce up and personalise your rented accommodation or a Bahraini planning a home makeover, the island has much to offer from high-end stores to budget options. Liz O’Reilly comes up with some ideas to get you started.
Living Room
The living room should be just that, a place where the whole family can gather in comfort whether to catch up with each other’s news at the end of the day, watch favourite TV programmes or just chill out and enjoy each other’s company. As the cooler weather approaches jazz up your space with plush throws in fake fur or velvet, find good value options at Home Centre in City Centre Bahrain and The One, at Al Aali Shopping Complex. For a budget option check out The One’s new basics store at Emna Mall in Riffa, which has a selection of good quality, unusual pieces at prices significantly reduced from the main store, or ID Design’s outlet store on the Budaiya Highway. Another instant update can be performed by changing your curtains and accessories and

this need not be a bank breaking exercise. Bahrain has an abundance of tailoring shops which will run up curtains relatively cheaply and both the Souq and Palace M&Co Avenue are great sources of materials whether you fancy bright or sombre, light or more heavyweight. For a dramatic look, and one which is not recommended if you have kids or pets, add around 20cm to the length measurement of your new drapes and allow them to pool on the floor giving extra focus to your windows. Adding a rug can bring warmth to your room scheme for the cooler months. I’m a big fan of animal prints and am currently scouring the island’s furniture outlets for zebra stripes but, if you fancy something more traditional, the Middle East is, of course, one of the best places to purchase investment pieces in the form of Persian and Afghani carpetry. If you’re an expat looking to make a carpet purchase, you’d be well advised to ask a local friend to accompany you as this is one instance where bargaining is absolutely essential. There are various carpet shops in Adliya’s Shawarma Alley and Oasis Handmade Carpet Centre
in Manama is also highly recommended and popular. If you’re looking to make a significant style statement, then new furniture is really the way to go. One of my favourite stores is Bo Concept in Seef. It’s certainly not cheap but you know you’re getting quality and I love to just wander round for inspiration. If you’re on a budget, take that inspiration and head to Gulf Auctions in Adliya. The island’s population is nothing if not transitory and the auction house frequently clears out homes for people whose postings have come to an end. So, while there’s a fair amount of junk, it’s a great place to find hidden gems but you really must bargain, bargain, bargain. And don’t forget, if you’re thinking of new furniture, it doesn’t have to be a whole suite. A statement chair or concept coffee table can really lift the look of a room, again without breaking the bank. Check out Details off the Budaiya Highway for designer pieces to add interest to any scheme. www.womanthismonth.com
House of Bath
Kitchen
If your kitchen is large but feels a bit impersonal, add a small table and chairs to make a focal point so friends can chat to you while you’re cooking or you can keep an eye on the kids while they’re doing their homework. Dress it with fresh flowers or a small plant and round off with some funky wall art or a quirky clock, we particularly like Fakrawi in Zinj for a selection of wall plaques from famous folk with fun sayings. Check out Home Box at Marina Mall for a good range of small and large tables. If you’re looking for a budget option, outdoor furniture is a good alternative. Jassim’s on the Budaiya Highway has a small table with two chairs for less than BD15 or you could buy a wooden bistro set from The Home Store at Bahrain Mall and paint it to personalise. I’m loving pastels at the moment so the wood in my home is sporting a surfeit of pretty pinks, baby blues and sunny yellows. In a small kitchen, space is everything so, if you’re thinking of adding a table and seating, look for bench seats with in-built storage for things like little-used picnic blankets and hampers, which
Debenhams

take up lots of cupboard space. Traditional Bahraini benches would work well in such a scheme and you will often find them for sale on Mums in Bahrain classifieds on Facebook. If you want to go for a personalised option there are Zara Home
various carpenters around the island who will make things to order. United Crafts of Adliya comes highly recommended. If you don’t fancy adding seating, new doors on your units will add an instant uplift. Check out The Closets for a huge range, which will work for kitchens or any other area of the home. To get the same effect without the outlay, consider giving your units a coat of paint but remember, you may need a specialist finish if your doors are melamine coated.
Bathroom
To achieve an upgrade without breaking the bank start with a really deep clean. Scale build-up on taps and shower heads can make your sanctuary look dirty but is easily remedied by applying a cloth dampened with vinegar and leaving it to work for a few hours to bring chrome fixtures up sparkling like new. Likewise, give mirrors a good going over with vinegar dissolved in water and
cleaned off with rolled up newspaper. Next take a look at your towels. Are they thick and fluffy or have they, perhaps, seen better days with one too many trips to the beach or gym. Check out Debenhams in City Centre Bahrain for designer options to give your bathroom a spa feel and, in future, keep your old towels for the gym! To continue with the spa theme, why not add some minimalist embellishment, if that’s not too much of an oxymoron. Pebbles, shells and driftwood are easily gathered on the island’s beaches and, once cleaned, can be used as attractive ornaments. But, if you’re picking up shells, make sure they’re empty before you bring them home, you don’t want to be sharing your bathroom with a kidnapped sea creature. Add a few glass accessories for a luxe feel such as candle holders or mirrored soap and lotion holders which you can find at Artikel in Zara Home
www.womanthismonth.com
Marks & Spencer Jawad Dome. And to finish off, make sure the room always smells great with scented candles. Try Jo Malone in City Centre Bahrain for topof-the-range smellies and, if you want to treat yourself to some pretty toiletries, which also small fab, I recommend L’Occitane. November 2015

he runways around the fashion capitals (and our own editor) have spoken: this autumn/ winter, the style circuit is not just going retro; it’s taking a complete trip back into history and reviving the luxurious elegance of the Victorian era. Think intricate lace work, opulent fabrics, deep hues and classic silhouettes, which can not just adorn your body but also its abode. How about taking this style beyond the wardrobe and splashing it around your home too. A space adorned with vintage objects exudes a sense of comfort and charm. Even if the general theme of your home is contemporary and vintage is something you’ve refrained from till now, remember sometimes old translates into timeless. And who says you can’t mix and match? Complement them with hints of botany and entomology, in the form of plant drawings and butterfly or dragonfly motifs. If there is a latent prehistoric scientist lying somewhere deep inside you, this is a good time to bring it out. Present your “specimens” under a bell jar or you can also frame some naturewalk finds, or natural souvenirs from your last holiday. What better way to show your devotion to your travelling spirit? Smaller objects such as old watches, compasses and binoculars can be displayed on corner tables or

The muted tones keep this look adaptable to any design scheme – from casual country to super-contemporary – letting secondary colours play the hero. OPULENT DETAILS The season warrants sumptuous satins, smooth textiles and crystal chandeliers sparkling in your home. Add classic luxe details to your living space with the finest of materials, fabrics, furniture and artifacts. Whether you are looking to bring in just one statement piece or want to go all out, the marketplace is flooded with choices which will awaken your home. Dr Prasan Durga, medical oncology consultant at Bahrain Specialist Hospital, urges women to get their breasts checked.
t is estimated that one in eight women worldwide run the risk of developing breast cancer at some point of time in their lives, making it the most common cancer among women. The breast is a lumpy organ, and most lumps are not due to cancer. However, the dangerous lumps, which could be an early sign cancer, are often firm to touch. Pain is often a late feature of cancer and the fact that breast cancers are usually painless lumps can lead to patients seeking medical attention late. Early detection is important as, although there are about 1.7 million new cases diagnosed every year, roughly 70 per cent of these patients are cured. In fact, breast cancer is one of those rare chronic diseases where a patient can be cured of her illness and live a normal life if detected early. The breast, thankfully, is an external organ which can be easily examined either by women
Dr Prasan Durga
themselves or by a trained physician or paramedic. The cancer often gives us sufficient
time to detect it before it can spread to other organs. Hence, breast cancer is easily detected by screening which allows detection even when the tumour is hidden and not causing any symptoms. The good thing about breast cancer treatment is that, today, most women can have an excellent quality treatment right here in the Kingdom. Surgeries are less mutilating, reconstructions allow women to retain a normal looking breast, chemotherapies cause fewer side effects and sometimes are not necessary if the cancer is detected early. Radiation treatments are accurate and conform to global standards. In short, treatment of breast cancer is easy, available, affordable and not to be feared. If you’re a woman above 50 without any family history of breast cancer, get your screening done every year. If you have a family history of breast, ovarian, uterine or colonic cancer, start at 40. Take the pledge, get yourself screened. Call 17 812-000.

Time Management We very often hear mums complaining about lack of time to do all they want and need to do in only one day. Ghada Salem brings some ideas to help you optimise your time.
B
eing a Mum can sometimes feel like taking on a dozen or more jobs all at the same time. This includes being a carer, driver, cleaner, chef, entertainer, nurse, bank, artist, teacher and not to mention be on call 24 hours a day! It can be a real challenge to give our kids the time and attention they deserve, as well as fit in all the other demands of day-to-day life. To help make the most of your time, follow our tips on how to have good time Management skills. BE ORGANISED Plan what you need to do in a day or a week. Make sure that you know what tasks you have to get completed, and by when, and make a list either on paper or on your handheld. Keep the list with you and tick tasks off as you complete them. Be realistic about what you can achieve on any given day – you are not a Super Hero! PRIORITISE Work out what are the most important things that you need to do this week, and highlight them on your list. Make sure that you give these tasks enough time and attention, don’t leave them until the end of the week. GET INTO A ROUTINE Having a daily/weekly routine can free up extra time for you. If you set aside a whole morning, for example, to do household paperwork/emails/bill payments etc, every week, then you don’t need to worry about addressing these things for the rest of the
time. You probably know your children’s routine very well (school/clubs/hobbies), so build your own routine around that. LEARN TO SAY ‘NO’ There is a limit to the amount of things that you can do. Learn what your limit is and then have the strength to say ‘No’ to any extra demands on your time. Decide whether if what is being asked of you is more or less important than other things that you have on your plate? If it is less important, then say ‘No’.
MAKE TIME FOR YOUR KIDS No matter how busy you are, try to make space for some uninterrupted fun time with your kids. Set aside time to play, read and talk with them. This is, after all, the joy of being a mum! TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF You are important too! Try to have some time set aside each week where you can do what YOU want – have a relaxing bath, take a yoga class, go for a run, read a book. Recharge your own batteries to be a more effective and happier mum. g mumsinbahrain.net | Facebook: Mums in Bahrain | Instagram: @Mumsinbahrain

Round the Clock Healthcare Parents all have questions about their children's health, but so often these burning queries go unanswered. Dr Jinan Harith Darwish tells us that well-child visits are the perfect time to pull together any concerns you might have and get all the answers.
O
ften, a child only visits a paediatrician when they are sick. This way, the paediatrician does not have the opportunity to look at the child’s overall health. The symptoms of a health problem can often be masked by a temporary illness that could be recognised at a well-child check-up. This kind of check-up should be scheduled when a child is not sick. It is an outstanding way to monitor your child's health and establish a strong connection with your paediatrician. The well-child check-up is designed to track your youngster's growth and development, address your questions and concerns and guide you on what to anticipate next in the journey of raising a healthy kid. The American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) recommends that children visit their paediatrician for a well-child check-up as a new-born; at three to five days after birth; by one month; at two, four, six, nine, 12, 15 and 18-months, two years and two and a half years; and once a year between the ages of three and 21 years. The AAP’s age-specific recommendations for preventive paediatric care cover the following areas: - Medical history; - Measurements such as height and weight; - Blood pressure; - Sensory screening, vision and hearing; - Developmental, behavioural and emotional assessment;
- Physical examination; - Immunisations; - Anticipatory guidance in areas such as injury prevention and nutrition counselling; - Dental referral. A well-child visit is a critical opportunity to detect a possible developmental delay or disability and for early treatment of potential problems, which can lessen the future impact on both the child and family. The goal of check-ups and well-child care is to prevent future health problems and to detect current problems early before parents or children would notice them. Luckily, most children are healthy, and that's certainly how we want to keep them. In addition, wellchild visits allow paediatricians
www.womanthismonth.com
to promote behaviours conducive to healthy development and to give age-appropriate counselling or anticipatory guidance, such as the use of time-outs instead of harsher forms of discipline, and increase knowledge of child-safety practices. Physician guidance has also been found to increase the likelihood that parents will read to their child and that a child will be breastfed. Before a well-child visit, we recommend compiling a list of questions that you might have about your child's health or development. Your paediatrician can help you navigate through problems such as sleeping, eating, toilet training, attention and learning problems and social behaviours. Don't be cautious to ask questions or divulge information that you think is important. You are your child's most important advocate and uniquely positioned to help your paediatrician understand your child and your family better and provide various tailored preventive measures you as a parent can incorporate into your daily lives. g November 2015

ore than 200,000 people sent in applications when Dutch non-profit company Mars One announced a no-return trip to the Red Planet. Whether Mars One is a hoax or not is a different story; but no one ever imagined such an overwhelming response for a journey into the unknown. It presented a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of experiencing something truly “out of this world”. It is the thrill of exploration and uncovering mysteries that has
brought us this far as a species. We might be ready to uncover the secrets of the universe, but many unsolved mysteries still remain on our own planet that have attracted explorers for centuries and yet still leave many questions unanswered. This month we journey to some of the Earth’s mystical corners. And although we may not find answers, an inexplicable end to a story has a unique hold on our imagination, making these bizarre nooks truly magical.
Nazca lines
NAZCA LINES, PERU An unexplained archaeological mystery lies etched on the Pampa Desert in the Nazca region of Peru and attracts thousands of archaeologists, scientists, history buffs, newage mystics and curious tourists. These are gigantic geoglyphs of geometric patterns, animals, human figures and thousands of perfectly straight lines which go on for kilometres. The only way to fully observe them is from the sky. Nobody actually knows

who made them or why, but visitors have proposed every imaginable explanation – from runways for spaceships to tracks for Olympic athletes, from op art to pop art and astronomical observatories. For the locals these drawings have their own relevance. The monkey, measuring 300 feet (90 metres) in length, has five fingers on one hand and four on the other and is considered to represent the nine months of drought in Nazca. The spider is said to
represent fertility and water, as this insect usually appeared before it was going to rain. The hummingbird, condor and flamingo represent the summer and winter solstices and their beaks still point to the exact location the sun rises and sets in Nazca. Make sure to add this day-trip while visiting Peru’s more popular tourist haunt, Machu Picchu. Board a small Cesna aircraft for a scenic air tour over the enigmatic Nazca Lines for an aerial experience of a lifetime! www.womanthismonth.com

Stone Spheres
STONE SPHERES, COSTA RICA One of the strangest mysteries in archaeology was discovered in the Diquis Delta of Costa Rica in the 1930s; a collection of almost perfect spherical orbs ranging in size from a few centimetres to over two metres in diameter. Believed to have been created between 200BC and 1600BC, these monolithic sculptures are made by human hands, with granodiorite, a hard, igneous stone. Locals call these spheres 'Las Bolas' and they can be found in many parts of Costa Rica. Perhaps the best place to learn more about
them is Finca 6 Archaeological Site in Palmar Sur. Out of around 300 stone spheres in Costa Rica, more than 10 per cent of them lie on this 10-acre property which is one of the few places in Costa Rica where archaeologists have found spheres that were clearly associated with other structures. It’s also one of the few sites where they’ve found well-preserved spheres still in their original location. Of course legends and folklore have added more to the enigma of the stones. Some believe they came from Atlantis and were polished EASTER ISLAND, CHILE Few areas in the world possess a more mystical and magnetic vibe than this tiny speck of land off Chile. Rapa Nui to its native Polynesian inhabitants, Easter Island is home to some of the most bizarre statues in the world. They reveal their creators to be master craftsmen and engineers. The 887 giant Moai rock statues, the lightest weighing 86 tons, were built and then moved around from platform to platform, on the island. Some stories from the Bribri culture suggest that Tara (or Tlatchque), the god of thunder, used a giant blowpipe to shoot these cannonballs at the gods of the winds and hurricanes in order to drive them away. Legends and laboratories, both have failed in providing a conclusive explanation about these icons of Costa Rica's cultural identity. way they may have been constructed and transported, remains a mystery. Measuring 14 miles long by seven miles wide, the island was formed by a series of volcanic eruptions. In addition to its hilly terrain, it contains many subterranean caves with corridors that extend deep into mountains of volcanic rock. But Easter Island is much more than an open-air museum. Diving, snorkelling and surfing are other excellent activities one can engage in. There's no better way to explore the island than on foot, from a bike saddle or, if you are familiar with it, on horseback. But if in addition to history, sun and surf is your scene, a couple of Moai statues superb expanses of white sand will make your trip truly memorable.

Aspen, USA
Niseko, Japan
Nestled in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, this town enjoys celebrity status among ski resorts. As one of the few places that manages to be both hip and classic at the same time, Aspen has become a reference point for other skiing destinations. Apart from celebrity spotting and the numerous galleries, boutiques, coffeehouses and gourmet restaurants, come here for some top-quality slopes and to sample the ostentatious character. With four separate ski areas within a 10mile radius, Aspen caters to all abilities and tastes.
If you are one of those powder worshippers who have plenty of frequent flyer miles and a taste for hot springs and sushi, this is your promised land. The mountains on the Japanese island of Hokkaido are globally renowned for having some of the most consistent, lightest powder on Earth. The place gives you a combination of four independent, interconnected resorts that girdle around the 4,291-foot Mount Niseko Annupuri. Another huge draw to this snow-town is night skiing, with enormous stadium-style lights brightening 2,560 feet of slope. The glistening powder running through illuminated nighttime forest is a Niseko specialty.
Wanaka, New Zealand Sitting on the shores of sprawling Lake Wanaka amid New Zealand’s Southern Alps this destination is fast developing a reputation as one of the world’s premier adventure haunts. Surrounded by picturesque alpine scenery, the tranquil town has hostels, cafes, pubs and small, luxury eco-lodges scattered all around. Wanaka gets the most snow in the country, with just over 200 inches in an average year. Do remember seasons are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere so the time to visit is from June to October – making it an excellent choice for “summer” skiing and snowboarding.

Dark Temptations One of the most consistent ‘wants’ women have been noted to express is the desire for chocolate. Here’s an idea that should help satisfy that craving.
SPAGHETTI BOLOGNESE WITH CHOCOLATE (SERVES 2)
I
t has been around for centuries and has been called a number of things; antidepressant, stimulant, euphoriant and even aphrodisiac. Chocolate enjoys a special, almost elitist status in the culinary arts and no new beans are spilt when we say its relationship with women is particularly intriguing. Even the most strongheaded, guarded, composed female has been known to succumb to the ungodly powers of this commanding confection. What is it about chocolate that makes us go weak at the knees or instantly brightens a notso-sunny day? Is it just the exposure to glossy adverts that directs us to react a certain way or does it actually sooth the nerves and highjack our worries. Well, it’s the combination of both that has resulted in making chocolate on of the most celebrated (read worshipped) foods of all times. Having worked with chef Oliver in Italy, chef Alfonso Ferraioli now represents him in the Primavera kitchen. Born in Napoli, the young chef started his kitchen career at the Naples Culinary School. He carried out an apprenticeship in Italy until 2002, before developing his skills overseas as a chef de cuisine in Corsica (France), Switzerland and England. Chef Alfonso Ferraioli has been appointed as the natural and deserving embodiment of chef Oliver’s cooking philosophy in the signature Italian restaurant. Discover your Passion Bahrain is a small island that offers its residents and tourists a wide selection of dining outlets. Our editor Fernanda Langhammer and WTM’s sales manager, Farheen Ahmed, went to Adliya to explore this original restaurant’s menu.

ur destination this month is the impressive Passion Restaurant and Café in the heart of Bahrain’s food district, Block 338, Adliya. The first thing you notice when stepping into the restaurant’s premises are the trees and all the green that we usually miss in this desert island. The grand foliage is part of the ambience and gives extra charm to the Arabic and Asian architecture. The unique décor was carefully composed by the owners with pieces brought from their travels around the globe. Elements like an Indian buggy on the ground floor, a handmade wooden chandelier on the staircase and a Thai tuk tuk on the rooftop. Every single piece has its place to add the perfect complement to the elaborate menu we were about to explore. Despite offering Arabic, Italian, Indian, Chinese and Thai gastronomy (a big challenge for any chef!) it is easy to identify the dishes which come with a complete description of

their ingredients. If you are craving for authentic cuisine, you will find them all there, however if, like me, you like exploring, then you must head to the signature dishes. After getting to know about the new dishes on the breakfast menu, I couldn’t contain myself and asked for the Sri Lankan breakfast as our starter. It may sound unusual, but it was honestly one of the best calls I’ve taken lately! (Breakfast is served from 7am to 11.30am if you are considering doing the same). The beautiful presentation on a wooden tray and small silver containers with a mix of delicacies first attracted my eyes then pleased my palate. Our main dishes came right after this culinary visit to Sri Lanka. My pan seared sea bass fillet and tiger prawn served with spinach and lemon risotto was beautifully composed and the taste even better! Fresh fish, cooked to perfection is what you get. Farheen asked for the tarragon chicken with butter rice, seasonal vegetables, porcini mushroom and tarragon sauce. The dish came equally well presented and according to her, full of flavour. Our dining companion asked for the chili lobster prepared in Singaporean style that looked and smelled so delicious that we had to steal a piece. We then proved that our visual and aromatic senses were right and this is a dish to be ordered next time! By now, you may think that Passion Restaurant and Café is a place to be checked out for its exquisite food, but not just that. The tea selection and extensive knowledge around the
subject seduces any tea or non-tea lover and the way it is served is just remarkable. You choose from a vast variety and if you want it cold to accompany your meal, the tea comes in the teapot with an hourglass, so you know exactly the time when it’s ready to be drunk. A big glass full of ice and some syrup on the bottom receive the warm liquid to result in a perfect iced tea that was carefully composed by Passion’s tea master. An experience you shouldn’t miss. We unfortunately couldn’t stretch our lunch into the dessert, but the feeling of having good food at excellent value for money will make us come back many, many times more to have the opportunity to try the famous (and generous) cheesecakes. The restaurant is open from 7am to Midnight. Sea bass fillet & tiger prawn

There are going to be a series of issues for you to address, although many of them will be of your own making. You have refused to accept the advice put before you in relation to a family matter. Now, you have reached the point where everything is about to ‘blow up’. When the dust settles don’t try to find someone to point the finger of blame at, instead, make amends as quickly as you can rather than continue with the fight.

In Her Shoes This month we walked in the heels of Heleen Laurisson, communication executive of Havas Worldwide Dubai, to get to know her a little better.
WHAT CHEERS YOU UP? I’m usually very easy to cheer up – good company, good music or sunshine. Worst case scenario – a shopping spree or a long run.
BEAUTY SECRET?
Positive mind-set and plenty of water and fresh fruits.
WHAT IS ON YOUR PERENNIAL TO-DO LIST?
To collect memories not things; make every day worth living and make my family proud.
LAST ITEM ON YOUR CREDIT CARD STATEMENT? Plane tickets to Vancouver (ticking things off from the bucket list).
BEST COMPLIMENT?
A close friend of mine once told me that I was the most stubborn, determined person he’d met. I think he said it out of frustration but, for me, that was the best compliment ever.
TYPE OF MUSIC LISTEN TO?
My heart beats to a drum & bass rhythm! But I really enjoy beats, electronic and dance music.
WHAT IS ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND?
A plant, the book To Kill a Mockingbird, photos and a bottle of water. And yes, I have my phone there (at least it’s not under my pillow, right?).
64 November 2015
WHAT IS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
My bucket list is pages and pages of travel plans and adventures. For example, swim in every ocean, surf in Fiji, snowboard in Whistler, play tennis on Wimbledon centre court, skydive in Dubai or take a roadtrip through the States.
WHICH ITEM IN YOUR WARDROBE DO YOU WEAR THE MOST?
I would love to say designer heels, pencil skirt, minimalistic top and oversized sunglasses. But no, looks like my tennis outfit and the gym gear are the most used items. www.womanthismonth.com
