hew, what a scorcher. After one of the hottest summers on record, I, for one, am very, very glad it’s finally cooling down (though not quite enough to entice me onto my bike just yet). With the new season comes our regular round-up of the best new fashions from the catwalks and ateliers of the hottest designers. As always, Fernanda Langhammer has put her years of experience to good use to come up with ways for you to adapt the latest looks to suit your wardrobe. From funky sportswear to Diva Deluxe, you’ll find it all in our major fashion feature. You’re welcome! To top off our fashion focus, I spoke to Bahrain-based designer Thelna Esterhuizen and, as you can see below, I was rather taken with the contents of her workshop and showroom! October is also the month when we go slightly pink crazy as it seems the whole world is working to increase awareness of breast cancer. Our interviews this month include Lamees Alhassar, who’s written several books on coping with cancer, and Bob Suri, of the Four Seasons, whose property is going all out to help. We’ve also got a full rundown of the official Think Pink calendar, there really are so many ways to get involved and show your support from brunches to golfing and more. And, in our Wellness section, Behnaz Sanjana speaks to Julie Sprakel, founder of Think Pink, to learn more about the psychological and physical effects of the disease and strategies for coping with them. # Trending What’s caught our eye in the news this month. Fatima Nedham scripted history for Bahrain after she won the gold medal in the shotput F-53 event at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Bahrain News Agency Could it be possible to make babies without an egg? Early experiments from a team at the University of Bath suggest it might be. Scientists have succeeded in creating healthy baby mice by tricking sperm into believing they were fertilising normal eggs. Instead, they used “pseudoembryos.” These "fake" embryos share much in common with ordinary cells, such as skin cells, in the way they divide and control their DNA. These embryos normally die without the addition of sperm to make up a complete genome. Until now, it was thought that only eggs could unravel sperm’s DNA in order for fertilisation to occur, but these special embryos can do it too. This suggests that other cells are capable of being fertilised. BBC A Muslim designer made history at New York Fashion Week by showing the first-ever collection to feature hijabs in every outfit. Anniesa Hasibuan, an Indonesian designer, included colourful headscarves in silver, gold and pink in her show. CNN

ANALEENA JOINS THE PARTY From Harrods to Manama – celebrity handbag brand Analeena has signed up to make its GCC debut at My Wedding Party in March 2017
M
y Wedding Party is the GCC’s one-stop shop for a fashion extravaganza focusing on the wedding sector. The four-day event, staged by Hilal Conferences & Exhbitions (HCE), will take place at Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre from March 15-18, 2017. The Analeena brand is a favourite among the A-list and it’s quite a coup for Bahrain to host the brand’s regional debut. Analeena, translates from Arabic as ‘I am Lina’ and is the brainchild of London and Parisbased designer, Lina Hamed. The signature bags use multihued exotic skins. Each piece has been described as a work of art, with unique blends of colour manufactured by the best Italian craftsmen.

Lina, a graduate in fashion design from the University of Westminster, started her career as a buyer for Hermes in Paris. As well as developing her talents by co-designing exotic-skin saddles for the high-end brand, she also worked as an assistant designer to Stephen Rolland at Jean Louis Scherrer before launching her own line of luxury handbags, ball gowns and accessories in 2008. The brand has been deliberately kept low key since its debut with Lina explaining: “Luxury, quality and design speak for themselves. The brand projects itself through our clients. These range from A-list celebrities to global business and political figures and royalty. Our luxury collection is exclusively stocked in Harrods in London, the MC Market in
Monaco and Paparazzi Boutique in Azerbaijan.” A-List fans include Jerry Hall, Liz Hurley, Olivia Palermo, Dita Von Teese, Jennifer Lopez and Blake Lively. However, discretion does not allow Analeena to publicise its exclusive circle of customers unless they publicly declare themselves. Analeena’s collection has also been featured in the American TV drama Gossip Girl. Lina adds: “I look forward to exhibiting at My Wedding Party to meet with our existing clients in the region to showcase some of our latest collection which will only have been seen in Paris a few weeks earlier.” “Analeena is known to many of the GCC visitors to London during their shopping trips to Harrods. Designing Positivity Fashion maven Thelna Esterhuizen, whose label Est by Thelna recently celebrated its fifth anniversary, tells Liz O’Reilly about getting started and her aim to help women feel good about themselves.
A
n interior designer by profession, Thelna moved to Bahrain for her husband’s work six years ago. Originally from South Africa, she had previously had a thriving interior design business which she continued when the couple initially moved to Oman. Once in the Kingdom she started buying clothes and jewellery to send back for sale in South Africa but, finding competition from areas such as China extremely tough, she decided to have her own pieces made. She explains: “I was buying fabric and having things made up, but I’m impatient. It was taking up to three weeks and, of course, I wanted the pieces straight away. I was in a haberdashery one day when I happened to mention that I was looking for a tailor to work with. Within half an hour I had a call from Ravi, we met and he just gets me. We have been working together ever since.” That was five years ago and Thelna was soon planning fashion shows to display her works, each with a theme that turns the event into a party, from crowns to circus. One year she ran her show at Muharraq Stables – “A logistical challenge but a lot of fun.” And for the future she is planning a popup street show. Ethereal and almost fairy- tale pretty, Thelna’s clothes tell their own story, from the cowgirl and ranch dresses, perfect for wearing with boots, to netted and

embellished confections which would not be out of place in Alice in Wonderland. And what they all have in common is Thelna’s own ethic that fashion should be for everyone. Her shows don’t feature stickthin models but rather everyday women – mostly the designer’s own friends. And the magazine she has produced to promote her work takes the same attitude pages filled with average ladies, in all shapes and sizes – having fun in funky clothes. She continues: “Women can be quite intimidating and I wanted
to help them. When I was in Cape Town I did a course with Nina Brown, who’s a colour consultant. I came back and put together my own course called Inner/Outer Beauty which is about discovering your own beauty – you have to be happy from inside. “I ask what do you see in the mirror? Then I try to teach women to see the good in themselves. We’re all very critical of ourselves and sometimes we forget to be happy. That’s also a message I want to send out with my clothes – they’re about helping women feel good about themselves.”
As her adult line was becoming established she found herself in demand in another, rather unexpected, sphere. Asked to design clothes for a friend’s young daughters to take part in an annual kids’ fashion show in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA, she was delighted when the youngsters went on to win their categories. This led to offers of more of designing for kids in the States and Thelna is now in the position where she may have to make a choice between continuing to work on her adult clothing line or working on kids’ fashion full time. She says: “To be honest, I could actually be in the States full time but I do love what I do here and I would miss Bahrain and the clientele I have built up here.” For the moment, she is planning next year’s shows as well as running her classes and holding monthly open house displays at The Art House. A Bahraini author is raising awareness about the psychological effects of cancer through her works.

W
hen human beings experience a life trauma of any kind, it is not uncommon for their creativity to be unleashed. In the case of Lamees Alhassar, her latent passion for writing was fuelled by the death of a loved one and she has since penned more than 60 books. The seasoned businesswoman always dreamed of putting pen to paper after retirement, but tragedy brought her plans forward, beckoning her to channel her grief into a more productive activity. “I lost my brother to a whirlwind battle with cancer in 2014. This jolted my reality and made me ponder over the transience of life. “I realised that the present moment is all we have, so I began publishing my writing online,” explains Lamees. Her first book, dedicated to her late brother, was about the psychological impacts of cancer and 5,000 copies were distributed around the Middle East. In a bid to give back to the community and bring about awareness, Lamees is campaigning to give out her book to those dealing with the disease. “I am teaming up with the Bahrain Cancer Society, the oncology department of Salmaniya Medical Complex, and hopefully Think Pink to hand out the book. “Doctors will provide the necessary treatment, but the patient has to take care of their mental and emotional wellbeing, which

Her book about the psychological effects of cancer is one of the most difficult aspects about the malady,” she says. “Warriors” is her term for those battling the disease. “They put up a battle with the ailment. Whether they lose or win, they continue fighting gracefully and valiantly till the end. “Change your lifestyle, and be happy, no matter what the end result is. Make the best of whatever time there is,” Lamees advises. The writer says she is constantly inspired, something she credits to a combination of the art of listening and a vivid imagination. “Everyone has a story or an idea, whether a bank teller or a restaurant waiter. All you have to do is listen with an open mind, gather the
stories, and come up with ideas.” A woman of varied interests, she is also an avid artist. After having taken sketching classes, she found painting to be a stress reliever because you focus all your attention on the colours and brush strokes. “This is when I wrote about colouring for adults as a stress management technique. I have since compiled various colouring books for adults and kids,” she adds. Having written various fiction, non-fiction and kids’ books, she is currently working on a sci-fi novel titled Planet Dan-X34. “It is a book set in a time where the owning of planets is now a norm, and how one company owner acquires a portfolio of 33 planets. Some alien businessmen barter an exchange of one of the planets. The swap is with an Earth-like planet with pyramids. These structures are actually gateways to parallel dimensions and the planet’s existence is now at stake,” she explains. Besides that, she has also written numerous books including a series of 10 paranormal books, Planet Robani 1, and The Power of Gratitude, which is her favourite work. “I think gratitude is a trait everyone should have to achieve a fulfilled, happy life. Bob Suri tells Liz O’Reilly that his hotel is going all-out to support Breast Cancer Awareness month.

t’s a well-known fact, the world officially turns pink in October and across the island restaurants, hotels and retailers will all be doing their bit to raise awareness of the disease which kills more than half a million women worldwide every year, according to the most recent World Health Organisation statistics. One place that will be making a really big effort is the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, where each venue will have something going on throughout the month, raising not just awareness but, hopefully, a sizeable amount of cash too. The initiative is being organised by hotel manager, Bob Suri, who got involved after meeting tireless Think Pink campaigner Julie Sprakel. He explains: “I met Jules and saw a huge opportunity for community outreach, which is one of the core values of Four Seasons – wherever we go we try to be involved in the community. We look for ways to be involved and to give back to the communities we’re operating in. “When I heard about what the organisation in Bahrain aims to do, it touched my heart and I really wanted to help. We have a whole range of activities going on throughout the month and we will be donating part of the proceeds to Think Pink.” General manager Greg Pirkle adds: “Cancer research is very, very important across the

whole Four Seasons chain. Our original founder Isador Sharp is a strong supporter of cancer research, having lost one of his sons to the disease. tudies have identified many risk factors that increase women’s likelihood of developing breast cancer; but there are things we can do to reduce the danger. Top of the lifestyle risk list is tobacco use, followed by obesity, sun exposure and alcohol consumption – with risk increasing in line with consumption. One of the most widely studied risk factors is the use of hormones in the form of oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy. Risk is increased 1.24 times for 10 years’ use, normalising 10 years after discontinuation. Of the non-lifestyle issues, age is the most significant risk factor. The disease is rare in under 25s increasing with age, with a plateau at 50-55 years. A family history of breast cancer in a first-degree relative is the most widely recognised risk factor. A family history of ovarian cancer in a first-degree relative,

especially if the disease occurred under 50, has been associated with a doubling of breast cancer risk. Although 20 to 30 per cent of women with breast cancer have at least one relative
with a history of the disease, only five to 10 per cent of sufferers have an identifiable genetic disposition. Women who have not had children are at greater risk, as are those who’ve had a first pregnancy after the age of 30, whose periods started younger than age 13 or who experience menopause after 50. Regular exercise and a healthy diet may be protective factors for some types of cancer as is breast feeding. And studies suggest physical activity after diagnosis is associated with improved cancer outcomes. Avoiding risk factors and increasing protective factors may lower the risk but it does not mean you won’t get cancer. Great examples are celebrities, such as Diane Keaton and Emmylou Harris, among others, and these gorgeous women have plenty of sex appeal – 71 per cent of respondents in a poll said women with grey hair can be sexy, whereas 78 per cent said the same for men. But even though many of us admire grey hair on others, we're often averse to trying out the look ourselves. Women often think grey hair won't work with their eye colour or skin tone, but the fact is, for every one of those preconceived notions, there's an example to the contrary of someone who looks fabulous grey. Follow these tips from Joz Salon & Spa on how to pull off the look. Transition to all grey: If you dye your hair, the transition to grey can be awkward. To make it smoother, ask a hairdresser for guidance. She may suggest colouring your roots with a semipermanent dye, an ammoniafree colour that covers up to 75 per cent of grey. Once you're ready for the reveal, just let the dye wash out (it can take up to 28 shampoos). Polish your silver: Grey strands are usually drier than pigmented hair, so they have a tendency to frizz and can easily look dull if you're not vigilant about upkeep. Try these tricks for a smooth, chic look and perennial shine: l Use blue-hued shampoos and conditioners only once or twice a month to prevent your hair from taking on a violet cast. l Get a modern cut with clean edges. Ask your stylist not to use a razor, because it can cause the ends to fray, making your whole style seem untidy. Whatever cut

So wash at least every other day (to prevent buildup) with a hydrating shampoo and conditioner containing antioxidants, which help protect against UV and environmental damage. Grey-flattering makeup: Accent your hair with the right clothes and makeup and watch the compliments roll in. When you see a really attractive greyhaired woman, she's often wearing charcoal and silver clothing, which makes her locks even more striking. You don't need to restrict your wardrobe to that colour family, but black, white, shades of grey and jewel tones (ruby red, sapphire blue and deep purples) are your best bets. Avoid earthy tones, such as beige and olive, which can wash you out. If you're going to commit to grey, the labour you save colouring your hair should be switched to putting on makeup, since grey hair tends to make your complexion appear dull. The best place to start is blush. Go for shades like apricot, peach and rose, not beigy or tawny colours – they make your skin tone look muddy. Anxiety, depression and fear are common fallouts of hearing a positive cancer diagnosis and while undergoing targeted treatment for it. However, there are various ways in which to better cope with the gamut of emotions. Research shows that acupuncture boosts the immune system and releases natural painkillers. It may also help to alleviate fatigue, anxiety and nausea. Julie adds that yoga and reiki have shown beneficial support
to patients, pre- and post-chemotherapy, although patients must always inform their consultant of any complementary therapies used. A specialised massage can also drain out the lymphatic fluids to prevent or help with lymphedema and Think Pink has supported training for these specialist therapists. Patients have said that music can be a great mood enhancer. Believe in the power of music and make that playlist of your favourite songs. Communicate your feelings to those close to you or write in a journal as a form of catharsis. Julie says, “Keep your mind and spirit awake – as individuals we all have different ways of coping. You need to find yours and know that there are people and entities within easy reach, ready to help you through your difficulties. Joining a support group could be of tremendous help.”

Method: Wash and clean the prawns and set on kitchen paper to remove excess water. Mix together all the ingredients except the cheese, butter and egg to create a marinade. Use this to cover the prawns and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Peel and boil the potato. Mix together the cheese, butter and egg. Remove the prawns, add the cheese mix to cover and cook in a preheated tandoor (or conventional oven) for eight to 10 minutes. While the prawn is cooking, mash the potato, adding cream and butter and seasoning. Blanch the green beans and then sauté in a hot pan with a little olive oil. Arrange the food on a plate and garnish with vegetable chiffonade. Serve with tamarind glaze.

Tea for Two
Liz O’Reilly finds the newly launched afternoon tea at this downtown venue a welcome break from a hard day’s shopping.
I
’m a firm believer that there are two things a girl can never have enough of – shoes and cake. So, when I heard The Westin’s new bistro and bakery, Furn, was serving afternoon tea, the chance to indulge both my taste buds and an ever-present desire for retail therapy, was simply too good to miss. Served in a purpose-built area of the atrium outside the hotel, the atmosphere is very much traditional with light pouring from above and comfortable garden-like seating. Plates containing a cornucopia of delights are brought to the table and suspended in a kind of bird cage contraption on metal poles resembling shepherd’s crooks. This sounds odd but actually looks really quaint and pretty, so much so that I want one for my garden, and it allows you to remove a plate at a time without cluttering up the table. There are two set menus, high tea and English afternoon tea, and we were lucky enough to try a selection from both. The quail’s egg salad on a bite-size English muffin with mustard cress looked almost too cute to eat – though that didn’t stop my companions who dived in enthusiastically. I went for beef basturma with thyme and onion confit on brioche. The tasty, seasoned, air-dried beef was perfectly complemented by the sweetness of the onion confit and the saffron pita pocket filled with pistachio

chicken was an interesting nod to more local cuisine alongside the cucumber sandwiches and smoked salmon on rye bread. To be honest, much as I’m happy to sample any number of sandwiches, for me afternoon tea is all about the cakes. And, on that score, Furn did not disappoint. I had been greedily eyeing a delightful butterfly cake with vanilla cream and strawberry jam, the deliciously light sponge and rich filling immediately transported me back to my mum’s kitchen – and trust me, praise doesn’t come much higher than that. The cake tray also contained blueberry tart, a red velvet slice and chocolate choux buns with keshta cream. Almost full to bursting, I felt I must at least try one more, purely in the interests of research you understand. The
blueberry confection was worth the sacrifice with the added bonus of being able to, almost, count it as one of my five a day. One might expect that to be the end of this afternoon indulgence but, no sooner had the cake plates been cleared than the waiter was heading our way again – this time with apple strudel and scones served with clotted cream and homemade jam. Pure English afternoon heaven on a plate, but they did put an end to my shopping for the day. Afternoon tea and high tea at Furn are both priced at a very reasonable BD20++ for two which includes, of course, a pot of tea from the extensive tea menu. I’ll definitely going back, I didn’t quite manage to eat all the cakes.

As the name suggests, it is the marriage of rich pistachio cream and finely diced pineapple wrapped in a pistachio-infused crepe. A drizzle of sweet pinacolada syrup harmoniously balances the eclectic flavours. Another popular favourite is the Yellow Akoya Pearl Lamb Shank, which incorporates a typical Bahraini snack. Unique in every manner, the dish has a fun twist to
it. Braised lamb shank is crusted with cheese corn puffs, resting on a bed of Asian rice and cured tomato chili sauce. “Besides serving the staples, we want to engineer the menu in a way that is exclusive to Hévéa, so you will only be

Happy Halloween
Kids big and little love the one night of the year when it’s OK to dress up, play tricks and gather far too many sweet treats for their own good. We’ve come up with a few Halloween how tos, to make sure your party goes with a howwwwwl!
Carve A Laughing Jack-o’-Lantern 1. Buy a pumpkin from your local supermarket or farm shop. 2. Draw a circle around the stem on the top where you want the lid to go. 3. Cut out the lid, make sure you use a sharp knife and angle it inwards so the lid will lift off easily. 4. Use a long-handled spoon or ladle to clean out the inside of the pumpkin. 5. Wipe the inside and leave to dry. 6. Draw your chosen pattern onto the skin with a washable marker – it’s possible to buy ready to cut stencils if you’re not all that confident of your artistic abilities. 7. Either cut out the shape freehand or, take the experts’ advice, and use a sharp pin or screwdriver to poke holes all the way round the shape and then push it through using your knife to even up the edges. 8. Pop a tea light inside, replace the lid and, hey presto, one pumpkin lantern. 9. If you want to hang the lamp rather than standing it on the porch, pierce a hole on either side of the design a few centimetres down from the lid and thread through thin wire.
Create Creepy Costumes Scary mummie:
1. Take a couple of old white sheets – if you don’t have any at home check out charity shops or discount stores. 2. Cut slits around 5-7cm along one edge (they don’t have to be perfect) and then tear along the length of the fabric. 3. To get the aged effect, take a bucket of boiling water, add a few teabags and soak the material for about half an hour. Remove from the water and leave to dry. 4. Get an old white, long-sleeved T-shirt, or tutle neck if possible, and, starting from the bottom, stitch the strips around the shirt. Again, they don’t have to be perfect, make sure you go for uneven and leave ends hanging. You can do this with a sewing machine if you have one but running tacking stitch is fine if you don’t.

5. Cut along the length of the sleeves and attach layers so you don’t have to stitch around. Once you’ve done a few layers and are happy with the look, turn the shirt inside out and sew the sleeves back up. 6. Take white leggings or pyjama bottoms, cut the inside seams and do the same, sewing on strips until you’re happy with the appearance and then stitch the legs back up. You can tie strips together for an authentic look. 7. For hands and feet, add more strips onto socks and gloves. 8. Cover face and head with left over material strips – as little or as much covering as you like – and then add a bit of green face paint, after all mummies are pretty old, so their complexions are probably not great. Dress up your costume with more green and grey or black face paint, but don’t go over the top. www.womanthismonth.com
Serve Up Scary Snacks Spooky bananas: Cute little witch: 1. To make a tutu, take a piece of 2cm wide elastic long enough to go round the waist and cover with wide black ribbon. Buy black tulle or netting and cut into strips around 50-60cm wide, varying the lengths to give a jagged edge. Roll the tulle and cut into 6-7cm sections, cutting a diagonal at each end to emphasise the jaggedness. 2. Hold two or three strips together and fold in half, wrap the loop around the elastic waistband and pull the ends through to attach the strips. Repeat all the way round until the band is completely covered. Remember to vary the lengths. 3. To make the witch’s hat take two pieces of black foam or stiff card. Roll one piece to form a cone. Try it on the child’s head for size and, once you have a fit, mark the edges to cut off excess. Glue or staple the edges together. To make the brim, on the second piece of card, trace a circle round a dinner plate then trace a second ring around the hat hole, make the circle slightly smaller than the hole and cut. Slide the brim over the top of the cone so that it sits at the edge. Add a strip of tulle at the join for decoration. 4. Dress your little one (or yourself) in a black longsleeved T-shirt and leggings with some scruffy long, stripy socks for added effect. Add the tutu, hat, face paint, wand, broomstick and anything else you can think of.
You can either stand these on a place or use lolly sticks. If using sticks cut the bananas in half and push a lolly stick into the middle of each banana. For a healthy option, simply add faces with chocolate chips. If you’re going for a more grown-up option, melt white chocolate in a bowl, around 200g for four whole bananas. Coat the bananas in chocolate. Layer desiccated coconut in a shallow dish, roll the bananas in it to roughly coat. Lay on a sheet of baking paper and use chocolate chips to form eyes nose and mouth. Freeze for around five hours.
Witches’ Fingers Cookies Take a tube of shop-bought cookie dough to save time. Split the dough in half. Put one piece into a bowl and knead in a little flour. Take small balls and roll into sausage shapes about as long as your finger. Pinch above and below the middle of the roll to form a knuckle and make three shallow scores across this area. Do the same with the second half of the dough but add a little green food colouring for a little extra atmosphere. Add sliced almonds as fingernails and bake for 10 minutes at around 180 degrees. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. You can use jam or bright red coloured icing to give a bloody touch around the nails and at the stump. (For a savoury option, use pizza dough and sprinkle with cheese and tomato ketchup.)
Hair-raising Mini Pizzas Use ready-made puff pastry, cut into finger-food sized circles. Top with tomato paste, cheese and anything else you fancy. How to deal with bullying when your child is the bully.
T
he way I see it, it’s never easy to discover that your child is being bullied. I believe it’s just as difficult to be told that your child is the one doing the bullying. In last month’s article, I wrote about things you can do as a parent to help your child if they are facing a bully. Here we’ll be talking about what you can do should you receive complaints that your child IS the bully. There are many possible reasons why children bully. Sometimes bullying is cultural in a society where power, competitiveness, winning and violence are noticed and encouraged. Sometimes bullying occurs institutionally where there is not a high standard of behaviour and where superiors mistreat subordinates, for instance. It can also be a method of communicating feelings of internal anger, stress, trauma, insecurity, frustration, fear, jealousy, envy, embarrassment, loneliness or even sadness by people with poor communication skills and poor personal coping mechanisms. Most commonly and most importantly, chances are that bullies behave the way they do because of an unstable, conflictual or dysfunctional home environment, whether mild or severe in nature. For example, growing up in a home where one or both parents are physically or emotionally neglectful, unavailable or unsympathetic. Or living in a home where the child witnesses continuous or intense arguments amongst family members. Bullying is a learned behavior and tends to have a trickle effect, where the child adopts those same techniques and applies them to others. Moreover, children who are confused by their parents’ parenting approach also resort to bullying others to communicate their inner turmoil. between being overly strict or overly permissive and that can be confusing to the child. Bullying is a way of acting out. Whatever the reasons may be, children’s bullying is a reactionary behaviour that communicates “My needs are not being met. I am emotionally overwhelmed about that and this is the only way I know how to behave in order to get my needs met." And this is a very important point to consider when we attempt to help a bully change their behaviour. It certainly doesn’t happen through putdowns, punishment, shaming or instilling guilt in the child. This would only make it worse. Some parents are convinced that these methods 'work'. However, most of the time, the child has been silenced to submission, still harbouring all sorts of unresolved emotions, and will recommunicate the underlying issues in other ways. Consequently, bullies
Lamar Kanafani are probably more in need of love, attention, understanding, empathy and acceptance by the people they love the most. So in order to begin to help your child stop the bullying behavior, the first thing parents needs to do is admit to themselves that their child is having a problem and also that they themselves play a role in maintaining their child’s behavior. Taking a stance of denial won’t help anyone involved. One very important parenting skill to apply here is listening with empathy and acceptance: taking the time to understand what’s going on in your child’s thought processes and feelings and letting them know that they are entitled to those feelings, whether you agree with them or not. Their bullying behaviour towards other kids may not be related at all to their targeted victims; rather, it could be a product of issues going on at home, at school or any other setting or people they are regularly exposed to (or even deprived of). Children have many needs: for stability, predictability, structure, respect, consideration, parental time, privacy, peace, attention, understanding, autonomy, connection, trust, inclusion, safety, laughter, support, guidance… the list goes on. Our children will socialise more effectively and excel academically and personally if we make sure to get those needs met. If you feel you need professional intervention to help you through that, then seek it. Work closely with the school to decide together on an appropriate course of action to get those needs met in their school setting with an end goal in mind of eliminating the bullying behavior and replacing it with other forms of communicating and socialising. My teenage daughter is taking an interest in fashion for the first time, she’s always been a tomboy up till now. My worry is that she wants to wear high heels and I know these are bad for her feet and general development. Can you please tell me the risks and how I can minimise them without spoiling her fun? I’ll make sure to show her your answer.

There is a huge distinction between young girls wanting to emulate adults as part of role-play and permitting them to wear heels every day. Children wearing high heels for long periods is a colossal concern. Children are growing, so their bones are very soft. Children’s feet are shaped differently to adults’; they are rounder, plumper, softer and more pliable. If you alter the pose of the foot, then their bones can ossify into a misshapen position. It is not about aesthetics, we are having a discussion about her feet becoming functionally imperfect. The human foot does not finish developing until around 18 years of age. When the heel is held higher than the ball of the foot, the Achilles tendon shortens. Extended weight-bearing by the ball of the foot can crush the toes together, forcing them into a bent shape and, in a number of cases, causing nerve damage. It’s not only the foot that is debilitated by wearing heeled shoes. Calf muscles may become shorter and tighter. The pelvis and spine are pushed out of alignment and amplified pressure is placed upon the knees. The bones of the legs do not finish growing and forming until the mid-teens and the changes to posture inflicted by wearing heeled shoes could well lead to permanent deformity in the bones of the ankles, knees and hips.

Personal hygiene is essential for all children but it becomes a particularly serious business after puberty. Failing to practise good head-to-toe hygiene as a teenager can be repulsively obvious to those in close proximity. Good hygiene practices during the teen years can preserve, improve and avert a teenager’s self-esteem from taking a nose dive. Conversations about your son’s hygiene should include puberty and the emotional and physical changes a teenager can expect. Steer clear of power struggles over hygiene, but be adamant that personal hygiene is his responsibility and, like other responsibilities, there are consequences for neglecting his duties. It is imperative not to dance around these issues, but to be straightforward and candid. Continue to chat about hygiene issues
in the context of the facts about puberty, body changes and why daily attention is important to health and cleanliness. Context will help your son understand hygiene is not just his problem. Interestingly, a survey of 904 14- to 17-yearold children from secondary schools around Nairobi was done to find out if there was any relationship between tooth brushing frequency and personal hygiene habits. The students completed a questionnaire anonymously in class. Of those students who brushed their teeth more than once a day, 52 per cent bathed daily, 22 per cent used perfumes/deodorants daily and 50.1 per cent always washed their hands after visiting the lavatory. No relationship was found between washing of hair and tooth brushing frequency. These findings indicated that tooth brushing was closely related to personal hygiene habits.
