COFFEE AS ART

Introducing the first machine from this blend specialist that allows you to create stunning latte art.

T

he barista experience is now even more achievable at home thanks to the launch of Creatista Plus, the first Nespresso machine that allows users to create latte art with its multiple milk foam textures. Nespresso brings its coffee expertise and quality, unprecedented system, convenience and simplicity whilst Breville brings stunning kitchen appliance design and its unique automatic steam wand technology. THE BARISTA EXPERIENCE Release your inner barista with the latest collection of limited edition coffees from this renowned specialist.

N

espresso introduces the BARISTA collection, three coffees crafted for flavour harmony. Pairing the finest quality coffee with smooth milk is a flavour harmony that has long transfixed professional baristas. Now, Nespresso is bringing this sensation to the home with three new limited edition coffees, two of which have been especially created to be prepared with milk. Whether you indulge in a creamy Cappuccino, a fullbodied Espresso Macchiato or an extra intense Ristretto, there is a BARISTA limited edition coffee to satisfy your senses and allow you to bring the coffee bar straight to your kitchen. Inspired by a barista’s craftsmanship to perfectly harmonise the complex flavours in coffee and mastering milk preparation, Nespresso undertook multiple sensory tests to define the exact levels of roasting and the ideal coffee grinding techniques to create the BARISTA limited editions. Karsten Ranitzsch, Head of Coffee at Nespresso explains: “From the many discussions with our consumers we have understood that a great coffee in black does not necessarily become an equally great coffee in white. Like the best baristas in the world, we have used our understanding and knowledge about coffee and paired it with the understanding that our consumers who love coffee with milk are looking for ideal bitterness, acidity, body, flavours and aromas in their cup. We are proud to have created three different limited edition coffees, which are specifically developed for those who like their Nespresso white, such as an Espresso Macchiato.” www.womanthismonth.com

The BARISTA limited edition coffees are set to delight any coffee lover with three tempting options: n Try BARISTA Chiaro for a Cappuccino. Tasting notes: The coffee has been specially crafted by the Nespresso experts to prepare a sweet, indulgent Cappuccino with a smooth creamy taste, roundness and exceptionally delicate biscuit notes.

Sample BARISTA Scuro for an Espresso Macchiato. Tasting notes: Carefully created for an intense, flavourful and full-bodied coffee finished with a gentle touch of milk foam.

Intensity: A medium-to-dark roasted blend of Intensity 5 when black, that becomes exceptionally smooth and round when combined with milk.

Best enjoyed: 40ml Espresso with two spoons of milk foam to retain the strong coffee character.

Best enjoyed: 25ml coffee topped with 60ml milk froth.

n

Intensity: A medium-to-dark roasted blend of Intensity 8 when black, that keeps its strong character when combined with milk.

n Taste BARISTA Corto as a black Ristretto Tasting notes: The BARISTA Corto blend has been masterfully blended to give the coffee an extra intense taste with a thick syrupy texture and a dark marbled crema.

Intensity: A dark-roasted blend with intensity 11. Best enjoyed: As a 25ml black Ristretto. Whichever your coffee preference, the BARISTA collection ensures you have the perfect flavour harmonies, without even having to leave your home. The BARISTA coffees, Chiaro, Scuro and Corto will be available for a limited period from Nespresso boutiques worldwide, as well as through orders from the Nespresso Customer Care Centres and online at www.buynespresso. com. EDITOR’S NOTE

ummer is finally waning and we’re starting to look towards the glorious cooler days of autumn, which means it’s time to update the wardrobe. If you’re planning to invest in some newseason retail therapy, then hold that thought until you’ve checked out our big fashion feature, starting on page 25. From the return of plaid to glorious glitter, we’ve studied the season’s latest trends from the world’s coolest catwalks and come up with ways for you to adapt them into your own wardrobe. Our interview section this month features an exclusive chat with award-winning Saudi film director Reem Al-Bayyat, whose penchant for tackling the difficult issues sometimes faced by women in her homeland makes for compulsive viewing. I caught up with the famed Valerie – she of Valerie’s corner at the BSPCA shop – who has an interesting tale to tell. And former Bahrain resident, Linda Brown-Hague, shared her experiences during Hurricane Harvey. We also heard from Anshu Adrekar about a successful ongoing charity initiative which runs for the third time this month. Being October, it is, of course, Breast Cancer Awareness month and we’re keen to do our bit. Our wellbeing section takes a look at the genetics of the disease and in Month in Focus, there are details for lots of fun events to get involved with. We’ll also be capturing all the action at the BIC for Think Pink’s recordbreaking attempt at creating the world’s longest pink ribbon, so make sure you check out our social media and next month’s issue for lots of pictures of the action. Sticking with the fashion theme, this month’s travel pages take a look at some of the lesser known places to enjoy Fashion Week, and the lovely Anastasia Ageeva, who’ll be a regular contributor from now on, shares her experiences of running some of London’s gorgeous parks – jealous much? Also this month, I was lucky enough to try out the new menu at re/Asian by Wolfgang Puck, and, yes, that too was rather envyinducing and we met the new chef at Bahrain Yacht Club, who’s making a bit of history. Safe to say, it’s a packed edition. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we’ve enjoyed writing it. I’d love to hear your thoughts on our social media pages and website, where you’ll find updates and competitions throughout the month.

I absolutely loved the Beauty segment in your last issue. Beauty in the Spotlight was particularly informative, telling readers like me all about new trends and products that are changing the way we strive to look our best these days. From complicated technological innovations like neck lifts, microblading and laser tatoo removal (just what I wanted to know!) to everyday rituals like hair styling, nail art and makeup trends – the article had it all. Thank you! Reading about Nawal Joz was also very inspirational, as she has achieved so much at such a young age and has made a name for herself on the island through sheer hard work and persistence. Beach Hut Man is the newest addition to the Midnight Flower Collection by Amouage. The fragrance’s narrative opens with a carefree mélange of mint, orange blossom and galbanum radiating light green and sweet floral notes nuanced with sensuous musk. As the story unfolds, the cool wood tones of vetiver and luscious earthy notes of moss hark back to the verdant forest, while ivy quickens the pulse with a promise of adventure. End notes enlist a trail of patchouli, myrrh and dry woods that lingers into the evanescent amber sky. Keep an eye on our social media channels for a chance to surprise your man with this alluring fragrance that’s worth around BD95.

Hala Al Turk’s interview was a really good read, not only for me, but also for my teenagers who have followed her career graph since her Arabs Got Talent days. Hala sets a fine example for the young generation today – to chase your dreams till you achieve them and, of course, be committed to achieving success. The star makes it look effortless in her images and videos, but the emotional ups and downs that she must have had to endure can only be imagined. Hats off to Hala! Naz, Muharraq

HIGH- F A S HIO N HIJ A BS The fashion world went up against perceived bigotry with hijab-wearing models storming the runways at New York Fashion Week for the SS18 collections. Several Indonesian designers presented stunning creations on the first day of the show, some under the modest fashion banner, others in the mainstream arena. “We’re not oppressed and we just want to show the world that we still can be beautiful and stylish with our hijab on,” said designer Dian Pelangi, 26, who has 4.8 million followers on Instagram. Fellow designer Vivi Zubedi, 30, was making her New York fashion week debut and said she felt moved to come partly because of Donald Trump, who has sought to restrict immigration from certain Muslim-majority countries.

Chloe

Dust off those bellbottoms and funky knits — the 1970s are back with a vengeance. Some would call the ‘80s the decade that style forgot, but you could be forgiven for thinking they’d got it wrong with some of the '70s-inspired looks on this season’s catwalks. Prada and Gucci went allout with brightly coloured clashing separates while Miu Miu and Valentino chose top-to-toe prints, in classically garish style.

Elsewhere on the runways there were shimmering floorsweepers, invoking the heady days of Studio 54, knit dresses galore and chunky heels that you could easily spend an evening in. This is a trend that’s actually quite shocking at first — for those of us brought up with more classic styles and natural materials, it screams against the grain. But I promise you, it will grow on you, and in a few weeks you’ll be raiding charity shops for forgotten gems and perhaps even digging out the knitting needles!

Valentino

Alice and Olivia

Chloé and Tadashi Shoji put a ladylike spin on the trend with very proper frocks in muted shades with extreme detailing. And Alice and Olivia came up with one of my favourite looks with hearts all round.

Massimo Dutti Massimo Dutti

The ‘70s look is one that can be as extreme as you dare — think Scooby Doo meets grandma’s knitting patterns. Team skinny-knit sweaters with tweedy A-line skirts or wide-leg pants. Adapt the look for evening with the addition of a belted kimono jacket, like this one from Massimo Dutti which is reminiscent of vintage Starsky and Hutch (the David Soul, Paul Michael Glaser version!). Shoes are very definitely clunky, almost verging on the ugly but, in true fashion style, so naff they’re cool and their functionality makes them perfect for the workplace or a night on the town. If you’re feeling adventurous, go for platform boots!

All That Glitters

October 2017

Let’s be honest and say this is not so much a trend as an ever-present movement. But, whereas in the past, glitter and sequins have pretty much been the preserve of celebs on the red carpet or your favourite ageing auntie’s ballroom dancing nights, this season metallics have very much gone mainstream, meaning it’s time to ditch the failsafe all-black ensemble. For a stunning after-dark look, you simply cannot beat a bit of shimmer.

Tory Burch

Alice and Olivia

Marvellous metallics were huge on the autumn-winter catwalks, showing across the board from the subtle sheen of delicate embroidery at Tory Burch and matte satins at Paula Ka to the full-on glamour of head-to-toe sequins at Alice and Olivia and space-suited, puffball bonkersness at Comme des Garçons (of which, the less said the better, in our view).

www.womanthismonth.com

You can also incorporate the trend into your downtime wardrobe with shiny accessories. I love these boots from Paul Smith which would look equally as good under jeans or a flowing skirt.

(science fiction author)

Gerard Darel Karl Lagerfeld

If you’re feeling brave, show off your curves in a golden-hued, figurehugging dress, which needs little in the way of accessories save for a slash of red lippie and a large dollop of attitude. Or play it a little safer with one stunning shimmering piece, such as this gorgeous Weill tuxedo or Mango’s metallic pants, paired with less attention-grabbing separates.

BENEFITS ON THE MOVE After launching a successful credit card just for women, this pioneering company has also developed an app to make the product more attractive.

I

mtiaz For Her, the latest credit card initiative, is fast becoming the flagship of Bahrain Credit’s portfolio, having generated unprecedented excitement among women in Bahrain. Concurrent with the launch of the For Her credit card, a beautifully designed mobile app dedicated to the needs of the holder has been created. Commenting on the app, Bahrain Credit senior vice president, Fadhel Al Mahoozi, mentioned that the initiative to create a product exclusively designed for women came as a result of extensive research which enables the company to understand how women interact with the credit card and their behaviour and spending patterns. This could not have been done without the appointment of dedicated brand managers, namely Fatema Bastaki and Noor Al Saati, to

manage For Her from conception to execution. A full map of benefits tailor-made for women, a card with colours and a theme that appeals to women and a finely designed box containing a valuable pair of earrings are all part of the package with every delivery of the Imtiaz For Her card. This, says Noor Al Saati, has caused extraordinary excitement on social media and the company is receiving positive feedback. Fatema Bastaki elaborates that the mobile app contains the names and branches of the merchants that have signed to tie-up agreements. The merchant list is increasing on a weekly basis, with special and attractive offers being provided to the holder of the For Her card. It is expected that this will greatly enhance the confidence of the cardholder wherever she goes and wherever she shops. The

Noor Al Saati

merchant list on the mobile app includes a wide range of services and products: clinics, spas, restaurants, coffee shops and hotels are part of the network. This will enhance the lifestyle of the For Her holder. The mobile app has a GPS feature enabling the cardholder to received notifications whenever she is within a predefined distance to relevant shops and establishments. Users need only to download the mobile app for Imtiaz For Her to start enjoying the range of benefits associated with it. Noor Al Saati is positive about the future and expects to add more merchants to proactively approach Bahrain Credit to create further tie-up agreements with attractive offers and discounts. Imtiaz For Her holders are all invited to join in an upcoming Grand Raffle with 12 luxury cars to be won. The date and venue for this event will be notified in due course. www.womanthismonth.com

WELCOME WINTER IN STYLE This value fashion brand has unveiled its 2017 Autumn Winter Collection to rave reviews.

M

ax, one of the largest fashion retailers in the Middle East, has launched its new line of apparel to embrace the cooler months to come. The range is inspired by a variety of contemporary and historical trends, ensuring that it offers something for every taste. The collection balances the old-world and on-trend perfectly. Mixing themes from the Victorian era with a modern-day touch, the dramatic looks bring an urban flair to the season. The end result is both nostalgic and current, just right to adapt to the present day. At Max, ladies will be enthralled with a wide selection of casual and semi-formal wear defined by colours that embrace the splendor of autumn. Bold hues like walnut and black create a solid foundation, delivering an impactful message and acting as a seasonal update to www.womanthismonth.com

well-established steel grays and ink blues. The materials and designs are inspired by the ‘70s infatuation that saw a shift from Bohemian to glam. The exotic suede and leather themes carry a more maximalist approach that blends well with the dark romantic feel of the range. High necks, lace panels, ornate brocade and dramatic sleeves are among the highlights of the season. A new age of fashion is dawning for menfolk at Max. The routine of distinct pieces is being eclipsed by a layered style. Formal and casual wear now borrow silhouettes and material from each other. With this transition in men’s vogue, comfortable clothing has become the new luxury. Great style and comfort are no longer mutually exclusive. Styles are now being created with soft and textured materials

making the men’s line easy to be in and classic, but, more importantly, timeless. Retro themes from decades ago prove to be hot sellers in the market, as today’s trends

draw inspiration from them. The entire selection has a reflective vibe, with an up-to-date feel and a sense of progress. Max is bound to capture kids’ attention with its widely inspired fashion staples for the upcoming season. With elements from yesteryear, the look is inspired by the punk movement of the ‘80s. From laid-back attire for the everyday – perfect to run, jump and play in – to catchy little numbers for parties and evenings out, the 2017 Autumn Winter Collection is just perfect for your little miss or master. This trend is awesome news for our part of the world because it can look heavy and over-warm while actually staying pretty light. When we think of this type of embellishment we generally envision thick woollen fabrics or even fur and leather, all of them infinitely sensible in the cold Russian climate. But the good news for us is that the latest also come in light, airy materials, ideally suited to our more forgiving weather.

Erdem

Gucci

The cold war might be heating up again but that didn’t stop designers taking their inspiration from traditional Russian embellishment for one of this winter’s prettiest looks. Detailed, colourful, floral embroidery sprinkled the collections from Gucci, Valentino, Naeem Khan and Alice and Olivia while Tadashi Shoji and Tory Burch adapted the trend in opulent monochrome and Erdem went for intricate detailing on sleeves and neckline coupled with stunning rich print colours.

The Russian doll look is one of the easiest to wear. Rock out serious fashion credentials with all-over embroidery such as on this dress from Weill or the gorgeous Tadashi Shoji coat. Or team these stunning Libertine boots (be still my beating heart) with skinny jeans and this fun fur from Zadig and Voltaire. This skirt from Alice and Olivia would be perfect with heels and a plain black top for a night on the tiles or, for an everyday Matryoshka fix, head to Desigual, where the trend is very much in evidence across the range.

Mixed Messages

34

October 2017

This mad mix has long been a staple at DSquared2, where designers Dan and Dean Caten are the experts. But, this season it’s taken hold across the board from gentle layers at Replay to flowers, velvet and punky tees at Alice and Olivia. Coach and Kenzo hit two trends in one, pairing plaid with layers, while Zadig and Voltaire and Bershka ignored the threat of cooler weather to feature cropped pants and flash a little flesh.

Coach

Zadig and Voltaire

One of my favourite trends of the year and one that has been creeping up on us for a while now. It’s the “dressing from the bedroom floor” idea of throwing together prints and florals, summer and winter threads, clashing textures, fabrics and colours to create a glorious riot of, almost, anti-style.

One piece of advice though, this trend is all about looking as if you don’t care – it’s not about really not bothering. A bit like nude make-up, a lot of work goes into making this trend work, so, actually dressing off the bedroom floor is not an option!

Mulberry

Alice and Olivia

Desigual

This “style” is perhaps the most democratic of all – your layers don’t have to cost much, though it does up the stakes a little to have, maybe, one designer piece in the mix. However, judicious use of great accessories will do the job. Hats like this one from Longchamp are popping up in many of the high street retailers and Desigual’s clothes seem to be made with this trend in mind. This look is very definitely a relaxed option, perhaps best kept for out-of-work hours. However, it can be adapted to look semi-professional by topping off with a luxe look jacket like this shimmering affair from Marc Jacobs.

This bright and fierce hue might not be to the taste of everyone; it’s a real attention grabber and perhaps not for the shrinking violet. But, if you can get past the ideas of 'red for danger' and 'red alert', it really is a rather democratic choice. Pale skinned, dark haired beauties will look stunning in deepest crimson — bright scarlet is the optimum choice to complement darker skins. Those lucky blonds can wear pretty much any shade of red and red-haired ladies can take the colour to its almost plum-like depths.

Zadig and Voltaire

Oscar de la Renta

Forget the little black dress, this season we’re all going to be scarlet women, with red, from deep ruby to bright crimson, dominating the runways of all the biggest shows. Max Mara went for cold weather opulence with an abundance of velvet and wool while at Chloé the look was short and sweet, sticking with velvet and a pretty heart-shaped neckline. Oscar de la Renta and Zadig and Voltaire both went for pants, the resulting looks proving the versatility of this colour, while at Victoria Beckham, Valentino and Tadashi Shoji, it was all about the Little Red Dress!

As I mentioned, it’s all about the Little Red Dress but there’s no need to restrict yourself if you want to flash just a hint of scarlet to demonstrate your fashion cred. Head to Mango for a tough, studded take on the classic biker jacket. Zadig and Voltaire’s shorty version of the classic Chinese cheongsam would look perfect over jeans or fishnets and thigh boots. For workplace sombre, the Marc Jacobs gathered top says businesslike even though the colour says otherwise!

Quintessential British designer Jenny Packham even went so far as to debut a tartan ball gown and voluminous plaid skirts topped with statement tees.

Probably one of the season’s easiest looks to adapt for everyday wear, there’s the option to display your fashion chops with small touches from hats to scarves, or choose a statement piece, such as a shirt or skirt, coupled with plainer accompaniments. I particularly like the season’s overcoats. Perhaps not the greatest investment in our climate but one that will last years and will always look smart, particularly for regular travellers to cooler climes. Replay

Girl power hit the autumn-winter catwalks with designers from Victoria Beckham and Stella McCartney to Massimo Dutti and Kenzo sending models down the runway in suits that would be equally at home in either the boardroom or the barroom. Materials ranged from on-trend plaid to butter-soft leather and, though this trend was certainly emerging earlier in the year, the wide ‘80s-style shoulders have now been banished in favour of nipped-in feminine-style tailoring. The beauty of the suit is its libertarianism. It can be worn by anyone: old or young, slim or curvy, short or tall. Bootcut legs over heels with a jacket sitting on the hip bones will elongate the vertically challenged; ankle-length cigarette pants are perfect for those who’d rather save the stilettos for the dance floor; and a tailored jacket over wide-leg pants looks super feminine when worn with a flowing bow-necked blouse.

Making Headlines Director Reem Al-Bayyat’s movie was recently recognised on a prestigious global platform. Behnaz Sanjana finds out more about the creative mind behind the production.

A

few weeks short of 35, Reem Al-Bayyat is a young Saudi woman who has recently gained attention for her directorial project Wake Me Up which she also co-wrote. Her passion to narrate the story of struggles faced by women in her homeland paid off, as she was named Best Director in the Short Foreign Language Film category at the Madrid International Film Festival 2017. Reem immersed herself in the art of photography at a very young age. She recalls: “I was seven years old then. I have always been fascinated being behind the scenes – it feels like real magic capturing moments forever.” Years after clicking images, she naturally progressed to filmmaking. To learn the finer points of producing motion pictures, she studied at the Arts University Bournemouth, UK. “I did a short course in film making in 2008; it’s thea same art school from where I learnt photography. The real support came from my husband, the poet, Ahmed Al-Mulla.” She says this helped her immensely to come out of the bubble she was living in, and, in a sense, made the world of filmography her oyster. Giving us the gist of Wake Me Up, she says: “Salam, the central character of the film is a woman undergoing a midlife crisis, who tries to revive her artistic pastime and feels a lurking rejection by society and a sense of internal guilt.” It took Reem three years to come up with this storyline, during which she also made two short documentaries with Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs – one in India and another in Korea. The movie itself was shot in Bahrain and Qatif, Saudi Arabia. Speaking of her dream experience in Madrid, she says: “It was fantastic – so well organised. I had the chance to meet so many people from around the world. I had zero expectations

'At the moment, I am writing science fiction and, so far, it's becoming more beautiful and powerful than anything I have done before' of winning; just being nominated was like winning. And I can't deny that winning has a challenging taste.” Her previous two works, Doll and Shadows, were her first steps into this field. She says: “The more I make films, the more I learn and gain experience. But I have to say that Wake Me Up has actually woken me up! Now, for the very first time, I know that I am ready to make a feature film.” The movie has garnered recognition to a large extent due to its relevance to her society today. That being said, Reem doesn’t think of her work as a social message. She explains: “Making films, for me, is sharing my art with the world. I never think about sending any messages.” She is grateful for the unconditional love and respect she experienced growing up. “During my childhood, I created my own world. I painted on

paper, canvas, tables and shelves. I took pictures, filmed, danced, sang and even played the piano. I read books and surrounded my soul with world music each day as I grew older. With time and experiences, now I am a strong woman, wife and a mother of a six-year-old boy. I am so in love with my life and the new society that we have all created,” she asserts. Although she admits to being a little apprehensive about the way society will react to her successes, it doesn’t stop her future plans. “At the moment, I am writing science fiction and, so far, it's becoming more beautiful and powerful than anything I have done before. I have so much in the pipeline – writing my feature film, making digital collages every day, and also working on my third video art, which I will soon publish on my YouTube channel. “I am also a fashion and fabric designer. My brand ‘Reemoosh’ will hopefully become a worldwide label one day.” Reem’s motivation to young Arab women is: “Read books and always be strong and brave. Life is inspirational, and we have been taught about the world but never about ourselves. So, I want all women of the Arab world to start a journey of discovery to find out who they really are. And remember, we are all special and unique.” g www.womanthismonth.com

From Couture to Charity-Shop Chic Liz O’Reilly met the woman behind Valerie’s Corner at the island’s much-loved BSPCA Thrift Shop and found there’s more to the talented mannequin dresser than meets the eye.

I

f, like us here at WTM, you love a bargain, you’re probably well acquainted with the charity shop which raises funds for the Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Tucked away in Bushehri Gardens, off the Budaiya Highway, it’s a treasure trove of clothes, books and all sorts of other goodies. Shop manager, Sarah Khouri, frequently posts pictures on Facebook from Valerie’s Corner, showing the latest donations, beautifully styled, on the store’s mannequin, prompting the question: “Is Valerie a real person?” The answer is an emphatic “yes” and her history is not quite what you would expect of someone arranging clothes for fun in a thrift store – except in Bahrain! Parisian native Valerie Dourmap has a degree in haute couture and, from college, went straight to work for renowned fashion house Givenchy. She says: “Everyone who studies this goes straight to one of the big couture houses, but I soon realised it was not for me.” Instead she spent around a year working in ready-to-wear before joining the Société Français de Production, which creates costumes for films. “I worked in the military outfitting department; it was all buttons and braid and I loved it,” says Valerie. From there, she met a costume designer,“a crazy woman who lived in a tiny apartment in Pigalle [the area of Paris that’s home to the Moulin Rouge, among other notorious attractions!], stuffed with fabrics up to here [she holds her hand above her head] and three sewing machines. I was lucky to learn with her until eventually she told me she had nothing more to teach me and it was time for me to spread my wings.” A job with Club Med, the holiday company, followed and for nine years Valerie travelled the world creating costumes for the company’s nightly cabaret shows. While there she also met her husband, who was in food and beverage, and after a stint in Moorea in French Polynesia, the couple set up home and spent nine years with Club Med in Florida before making the move to Bahrain. “We’ve been here eight years now and it has gone in a flash,” says Valerie. So, how did she come to be putting her skills to use for the BSPCA? “Well, it was 2011 and I was working with a group of women who were trying to put on a play based in the 1970s www.womanthismonth.com

'My inspiration comes from the items in the shop – I’m a big fan of bright colours and clashing patterns – and my aim is to show people that' and someone told me ‘you have to go to the charity shop’. I did and I was delighted with all the good clothing and costume material. Due to the issues in 2011, the show didn’t go ahead but I had fallen a bit in love. I was here all the time and eventually I asked Joyce [the former manager] if I could volunteer. “When Sarah took over, she brought the mannequin and I started to put together

outfits. It’s great fun and often I will be dressing it and will turn round to find someone’s bought part of the outfit while my back’s turned. That’s great; it shows people like it. “My inspiration comes from the items in the shop – I’m a big fan of bright colours and clashing patterns – and my aim is to show people that, just because the clothing in donated, you can still have fun with it and make it look great.” In fact, she also adapts clothing from the shop for herself as well as making lots of her own pieces and, taking advantage of her husband’s job as a buyer for an interior design company, she makes use of curtain fabric samples to create a range of stunning jackets, which can be latelierdevalerie on Etsy and Instagram. g October 2017

High and Dry in Houston Linda Brown-Hague lived in Bahrain for five years before heading back to the US in October 2015 to set up home in a suburb of Houston, Texas. She shares her experience of the devastating Hurricane Harvey.

What brought you to Bahrain, how did you spend your time here? My husband, John Hague, is an SVP for Aspen Technologies, Inc. He came to set up MENA for the company. I had a weekly game of mahjong with friends and would donate to Tony the Dogfather. Otherwise, we travelled a great deal and enjoyed time with our friends. Whereabouts in Texas did you settle? We returned to the area we lived in prior to moving, Katy, TX, a suburb of Houston. Texas is our home state and we raised three children here. When did you first hear that Harvey was coming and what preparations did you make? We watched the movement of the tropical storm for a few weeks. We stocked up on water, food that doesn't need refrigeration, ice, plenty of batteries for flashlights and

radio as well as keeping the cars filled with petrol. We had previously lived through hurricanes Rita and Ike.

What was your experience of Harvey? You start off feeling prepared and know you are as prepared as you can be. We happened to have our friends Mark and Diana Hardaker visiting from Bahrain. They were in the US for the eclipse and making stops to visit their friends that lived in the States. They arrived on Thursday and, when the rain started on Friday, Mark asked what I thought he should do. I told him I believed he should leave and go early to their next stop in Delaware. They were able to get a flight out of Houston scheduled for Saturday morning. On the way to the airport the warning came out that one of the exits to the airport was flooded but we had another route to get there. But Mark and Diana were then given notice that their flight was cancelled. We continued on to the airport and they rented a car and were able to drive to Dallas and get a flight from Dallas to their friends in Delaware. When we arrived back to our house and www.womanthismonth.com

turned on the television, we started seeing the devastation and the heart-breaking images of people leaving their homes in waist-high water to evacuate. People using blow-up mattresses to help the elderly and children evacuate. Seeing police boats unable to continue with evacuating people because they'd run out of gas and the community showing up with cans of gas to help. The loss and devastation was extremely emotional and seeing the amount of people that rallied to help people they didn't know, regardless of race, religion, economic differences.... it didn't matter, humanity at its finest! The loss of life, displaced animals, separated families — heart-breaking. Then you start getting the calls from people that you know and your loved ones who are in dire situations. Our handyman, his wife and their three children, ages 10, three and two, lost everything and were living in a shelter. Our daughter had to be evacuated and it took her three attempts to get to our house. She’s still waiting to go back because in that area they've had to shut the power off because of the flooding. We feel extremely blessed that she had a place to come. After the rain subsided I woke up one morning around 3am. I thought I heard it raining. I began to cry, not for myself but for those who were already dealing with devastation. I went to the window and was extremely relieved that it was not raining. I cried several times every day and when I was able to start helping those in need, whether it be finding them housing, donating www.womanthismonth.com

items and helping first responders, it was then that I stopped crying. But there is the guilt that lingers that my house is, as we say, high and dry. Have you had any damage and, if so, how long will it take to repair? None. It seems silly to mention, in light of everybody else's dire straits, we just couldn't get out of our house for two days due to flooded roads. And a tornado destroyed a business three miles from our home. As the storm waters subside, what are you seeing around you now? People trying to repair what little they have left. This is a long recovery, at least two years. Those that have the least trying to gather basic human necessities to carry on. We’re still seeing people coming together to help one

another to find donations for people and to help people get their belongings out of their homes to the curbside for rubbish pick-up. Many of your friends here in Bahrain will probably want to help. What would be your message to them, is there somewhere trusted that you are aware of for people to make donations? There have been some great organisations helping out but the one that I know that will 100 per cent go back into the Houston community is a JJ Watt fund he set up. He is a professional football player for the Houston Texans. Many celebrities, such as Jimmy Fallon, have also donated to this foundation. Collective For A Cause Social media can be so much more than just a channel for frivolous pastime when it’s put to good use. The founder of a Facebook group that’s gone from virtual to actual tells us more.

S

tarted by expat Anshu Adrekar in January of 2014, Facebook group MOMwise set out as a page for mums and the topics that concern them on a day-to-day basis. Anusha’s vision was to create an online community for women to discuss and learn from certified professionals about food, health, fitness, child psychology, relationships, the arts, gardening, fashion and social service. By 2015 this virtual hamlet had gained around 3,000 members, when Learn and Serve was born as a group initiative. Anusha says: “One of the members of the MOMwise group suggested that we should start a MOMwise craft club, where we could all meet and share our knowledge and skills with each other.” This sparked off an idea in her mind. “I thought, why not do this with the purpose of social service and give it a timeline. The idea was to learn a skill for the purpose of donating whatever is produced. Hence the name Learn and Serve. Since we were close to winter, we decided to knit or crochet woollen scarves to give away to the construction workers around the island.” She continues: “We made two groups, one of ladies who could teach the skill, and the other of women who were ready to learn the technique for the purpose of donating it to the needy. As the administrator of the group, I carried out the coordination between the teachers and learners.” That year, the ladies came up with 65 scarves between five teachers

'We decided to carry on for the sake of seeing the happy faces of the children and other patients at the Cancer Ward in Salmaniya Hospital.' and 60 students.” She continues, “In the second year, our group grew bigger. As our numbers increased, someone suggested we make caps as well to distribute among cancer patients. We were more than 100 of us. In total, we made around 120 woollen scarves and 70 caps. They were distributed amongst construction workers and cancer patients [adults and children] at Salmaniya Hospital.” The Learn and Serve initiative fell seamlessly into place by the will of women who wanted to make some sort of difference to those in need. The instructors donated their time to teach others, while the students spent from their own pockets to source the required materials for knitting and crochetwork. “Volunteers started coordinating among themselves to buy their materials in bulk, with the aim of making it more cost-effective,” Anshu indicates as another instance of teamwork for a good cause. As ladies from various pockets of Bahrain stepped forth to teach these crafts, subgroups formed in Budaiya, Adliya, Juffair, Tubli, Manama, Hoora and Hamala for the

convenience of the learners. “Weekly sessions were conducted at these area-wise centres. We adhere to a time limit for the project and everyone usually completes their task within that period,” she explains. Once the ladies have completed their handiworks, the project concludes with their collection at a central place, from where volunteers are happy to distribute them to previously decided locations. Although Anusha has now moved on from Bahrain to live in Australia, she still maintains a strong connection with her online community here. She says, “I have been very lucky that I have so many friends in the group who genuinely feel for the cause and would like to continue to take it forward. Prior to my leaving Bahrain, we had decided to carry on with this initiative, for the sake of seeing the happy faces of the children and the other patients at the Cancer Ward in Salmaniya Hospital, and also for how fulfilled we feel when the labourers at construction sites thank us for receiving something that they could really do with.” Anusha gives credit for the continuation of this idea to the entire group of women who facilitate its logistics in her absence. “The actual work — teaching, learning and production, is done by them, while I coordinate the whole project online from Australia,” she says. This year’s initiative has just started and, if you would like to get involved, check out the MOMwise page on Facebook. www.womanthismonth.com

What's a Doula?

Chanelmama blogger Ouiam Charkani El Hassani explains the role of this most traditional of birthing partners.

I

remember how my grandmother used to tell me how she gave birth to her three daughters, many years ago, in the comfort of her own home, in the presence of her own mother, and the most knowledgeable women in the neighbourhood. How they held her hand and explained to her what was going on and how the baby was making her way into the world. She also told me stories about how all three babies were placed on her chest to be breastfed, moments after they were born. Meals were prepared and brought to her bedroom for the whole duration of 40 days after giving birth. And different women would take turns in helping her with the baby, at night and during the day. How she was looked after by women just like her. How she had a strong support system in the absence of science and scientists in white robes (aka doctors). Childbirth then was regarded as a normality, as the most natural event that could ever occur in a woman’s life. Women were prepared to care for birthing mamas; they were raised this way. Childbirth was an opportunity for women to connect and show all the support and encouragement they could for each other. Of course, then, women also died in childbirth, many babies didn’t make it through their first weeks, days, hours of life, due to the poor or nonexistent medical resources, which is very unfortunate, sad and heartbreaking; however, the women who made it safely (and they were many) still had a natural, beautiful experience with a whole birthing village at their feet. The question is: where is this birthing village NOW? I don’t mean nurses hooking you up to machines, telling you what to do and what not to do; strapping you to a bed and letting

54

October 2017

your body work against gravity, or doctors who don’t even have five minutes to answer the questions of a confused, worried first-time mama. I mean women like me and you, who have been there and done that, who will hold your hand, who believe in your amazing body and how it knows exactly how to bring this most precious little person to life, who will prepare food for you, and bring it to your bed, who will tend to every need of yours? If you think this doesn’t exist anymore, think again and let me introduce you to the job of a doula. The word doula is Greek, meaning women’s servant. It is derived from how women have been serving others in childbirth for many centuries, and have proven that support from another woman during pregnancy, and labour, has a positive impact on the process. A doula is a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical and educational support to a mother who is expecting, is experiencing labour or has recently given birth. The doula’s purpose is to help women have a safe, memorable and empowering birthing experience. Doulas provide the birthing mama with all the knowledge she needs to know about her body, and her choices, in order to make the best decisions about her own birthing experience. They guide the expectant mother and her partner through labour, suggesting techniques such as breathing, relaxation techniques, movement and positioning (positioning is

important both with and without epidurals). Doulas help parents to-be, find evidencebased information about different options in pregnancy and childbirth. They also help explain medical procedures before or as they occur; they help the partner understand what’s going on with their loved one’s labour. Doulas are the birthing village of our time — they are there to help women have the miraculous, peaceful and unforgettable childbirth they deserve. Recent studies have shown that whenever doulas were present, there was a: • 31 per cent decrease in the use of Pitocin (induction medication) during labour/ childbirth; • 28 per cent decrease in the risk of Caesarean; • 12 per cent increase increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous natural birth; • Nine per cent decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief; • 14 per cent decrease in the risk of newborns being admitted to a special care nursery; • 34 per cent decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience. If you live in Bahrain, you are pregnant and you are wondering how to find one of those doulas, Rainbows & Unicorns Doula Services is here for you — with a doula certified from Canada (me), ready to offer you all the support you need to make your pregnancy and labour the most pleasurable experience. g www.rainbowsunicornsdoula.com www.womanthismonth.com

DEALING WITH AEROPLANE EARS How to tackle a problem which affects many travellers.

E

ven though today’s aircraft are pressurised to minimise changes in air pressure, many passengers still suffer aeroplane ears (barotitis media), which causes partial hearing loss, pain and a stuffed-up feeling. Symptoms typically begin while the plane is descending and can persist for up to 30 minutes after landing. Cause As a plane climbs, cabin pressure lowers and the pressure in the middle ear reduces to match the cabin pressure. When the plane descends the cabin pressure will alter and you will feel the change in your eardrums which can cause discomfort until your ears equalise. The Eustachian tube — which normally drains secretions from the middle ear into the throat — exchanges air between the ears and nose, but when there is a pressure differential, lower-pressure air may get trapped in the middle ear.

www.womanthismonth.com

Treatments Swallow several times or blow your nose gently, chew gum or yawn – all help to open the Eustachian tube. Squeeze the nostrils shut with your thumb and forefinger, inhale through your mouth and

then attempt to force the air back into the nose, you should feel your ears pop. Use a nasal decongestant spray or pill an hour before landing. Try small silicone rubber ear plugs, marketed under the name EarPlanes, which have a filter that equalises the effects of cabin air-pressure changes. Avoid alocoholic beverages in flight. Hydrate yourself. Try to avoid flying while suffering from a cold or allergy. If it is possible to postpone your trip, do so. If your ears fail to open or if pain persists several hours after landing and if you fly frequently and have persistent ear pain, consult an ENT doctor. Call 77 310-000.

Your Health in Your Hands Thanks to the advances in genetics and research, women can find out if they are at a higher risk of breast cancer and act to take control of their future health and wellbeing, writes Behnaz Sanjana.

O

ctober turns the spotlight to breast cancer the world over, when women – young and old – are reminded of the importance of early detection and to strengthen their resolve to live healthy. This is also the time to increase our awareness about this, unfortunately, all too familiar disease and keep ourselves abreast of ways to prevent it. Breast Cancer Related to Inherited Genetics When international celebrity Angelina Jolie declared some years ago that she had opted for a double mastectomy (removal of both breasts) after testing positive for BRCA1 And BRCA2 gene mutations, she was at the receiving end of judgement – good and bad. The news raised a lot of questions about genetic testing and counselling related to this type of cancer. Dr Ahmed Alalawi, who runs Biolab in Bahrain, took time out to clarify the basics for us. A specialist in molecular pathology and genetics, he has facilitated DNA sequencing for BRCA1 and 2 genes to be tested right here on the island. “Through genetic testing, women now have the opportunity to know more about their body type. Unlike before, it’s easy and not too expensive. The test results enable women

56

October 2017

to make important life choices,” he says. He explains: “The mammary glands in the breast are very active glands. The rate of multiplication of cells here is very high. Each cell makes copies of all its genes, then splits into two with one set of genes in each new cell, going from one to two, to four and so on.” He goes on to say that the BRCA1 and 2 genes are the ‘eyes’ that check for any abnormalities in cell replication. They are tumour suppressors that keep cells from growing and dividing too rapidly. “When there is a problem, or mutation, in these genes, cells multiply uncontrolled, leading to cancerous tumours,” he says. The expert recommends that anyone with a strong family history of breast cancer on the maternal side must get their BRCA1 and 2 genes tested for mutation. “Genetic testing can facilitate preventive action for developing breast cancer. A patient may have a problem with either one of the genes, or both of them. The degree of risk varies, depending on the extent of the mutation,” he says. “If a patient is relatively young and at high risk, we suggest that after they have their children, they go in for elective mastectomy to greatly reduce their breast cancer risk,” he continues.

Genes are made of a substance called DNA. They contain information to build and maintain cells in the body. DNA determines your physical characteristics – like blood type, eye and hair colour, etc., that are passed over the generations. Genetic testing can foretell the risks of developing certain diseases. Dr Alalawi justifies this seemingly harsh and aggressive step, saying: “Women in this part of the world attach too much importance to their feminine form, even though it may be a risk to their life. What they must realise is that they can be around for their families for a long time to come if they go in for elective mastectomy. And these days, reconstructive surgery is an excellent option, available at Salmaniya Hospital, enabling patients to look and feel absolutely normal. I have seen several women opting for this procedure – sadly many of them are ones who have actually tasted the early loss of a dear one to breast cancer and don’t want their own children and families to face the same pain. Of course, spouses and families need www.womanthismonth.com

LIFESTYLE | wellbeing to be supportive through this trying time.” A BRCA1 and 2 gene mutation is most likely inherited from the mother. But it could be that the mother has not had breast cancer in her lifetime. “She will be used as what we call a reference patient, who we genetically study inside-out, and accordingly design a lifestyle plan for the entire family – how often they should get checked, what type of cancer could affect them in the future [ductal or lobular, or both] and steps to prevent it,” informs the doctor. But all is not bleak, as gene mutation is not a cause, but an increased risk, for breast cancer. “It is not necessary that a positive testing for BRCA1 and 2 mutations translates to guaranteed cancer. For lower risk cases, we recommend yearly examinations, lifestyle changes and some medication to prevent the cancer from developing,” he says. Breast Cancer Not Related to Inherited Genetics As per www.cancer.gov, only five to 10 per cent of breast cancers are thought to be hereditary, caused by abnormal genes passed from parent to child. High levels of radiation from circumstantial factors, or in treating other medical conditions, can also damage the cells and DNA, which can result in breast cancer. Besides this, the following aspects greatly predispose women to getting the

Women with abnormal BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes have up to 85 per cent lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. Others have around 10 per cent chance of getting the disease. disease (source: www.breastcancer.org): - Thanks to unhealthy eating, girls start puberty and breast development at a very early age. The earlier breasts are

formed and the longer they are exposed to stimulating or altering substances (found extensively in the environment and food), the higher the risk of breast cancer later in life. - More women are delaying pregnancy, not breastfeeding their babies or breastfeeding for shorter durations. A full-term pregnancy and breastfeeding protect against the disease by making the breast cells mature. - Modern life keeps us indoors and less physically active than in earlier generations. Exercise helps regulate hormone and blood sugar levels, thereby preventing any extra cell activity. Obesity is an established breast cancer risk factor, as is a lack of vitamin D, which is absorbed through exposure to sunlight. - Hormone replacement therapy to reduce menopausal symptoms produces a moderate increase in cancer risk, and birth control pills are linked to a small increase in risk. They cause extra breast cell growth and can promote the growth of breast cancer. The longer we take these medicines, the higher the risk. - Smoking and high alcohol consumption also increase risk. Second-hand smoke has a negative effect too. - Perpetual stress and sleep deprivation results in lower levels of the sleep hormone melatonine, which promotes normal cell growth.

Tackle the Toxics! Unfortunately for us, in this day and age, we are exposed to pollutants – harmful synthetic chemicals that alter the chemical make-up of our bodies. It has been proven that some can directly damage our genes, while others disrupt the normal hormonal balance and lead to abnormal breast cell growth. Our food – Shockingly, we ingest chemicals with our food every day in the form of pesticides that are used to grow it. Human and animal studies show that exposure to several widespread pollutants during early breast development can significantly increase the risk of developing www.womanthismonth.com

breast cancer later in life. Many cattle farms inject extra hormones and preventive antibiotics into their animals to increase meat and milk production. The end result is a weakened human immune system that is unable to effectively heal cell damage. Fast food chains are known to recycle their used oil many times over and use carcinogens like monosodium glutamate in their food – both spell disaster to health. Our air – Chemicals used to build and beautify our homes (think paint, sealants and other construction materials) have been linked to an increased risk for breast

cancer. Scented candles and air fresheners let off toxic substances into our air too. Our products – What goes on and around you can be absorbed into the body. Certain toxins in our personal, beauty and cleaning staples can wreak damage on our cells. Plastic food containers, when heated or repeatedly re-used, release chemicals into the edibles they hold. Laboratory studies raise serious concerns about the possible effect of plastics on breast cancer risk. In 2009, the USA’s President’s Cancer Panel suggested that the true burden of environmentally induced

cancer has been grossly underestimated, in regard to human exposure to potential environmental carcinogens being widespread. To sum it up, Dr Alalawi says that there are many parameters that dictate whether or not a woman will get breast cancer. He staunchly maintains that her lifestyle choices and stress management are paramount. He urges women to remember that cancer prevention is easier, cheaper and less painful than its cure. So get examined by a professional this month and be committed to routine selfexaminations and a healthy way of living all year round. October 2017

DIABETES AND DENTAL HEALTH Periodontist Dr Akanksha Ostwal explains the importance of good dental health for diabetics.

D

uring the past 10 years, much research has been undertaken on the link between diabetes and periodontal disease which is the sixth leading complication of the condition. Diabetics are three to four times more likely to develop periodontal disease, with a higher rate of more severe levels of bone loss and gum infection. Periodontal or gum disease is a bacterial infection of the gums, ligaments and bone that support the teeth and hold them in the jaw. Untreated, it may cause tooth loss. The main cause is bacterial plaque, a sticky, colourless microbial film that constantly forms on your teeth. Periodontal disease may make it more difficult for diabetics to control their blood sugar. The body's reaction can increase blood sugar levels, so, it’s important for diabetics to treat and eliminate infection. Periodontal treatment combined with antibiotics has been shown to improve blood sugar levels in diabetics, suggesting that treating periodontal

Dr Akanksha Ostwal

disease could decrease insulin requirements. Signs and Symptoms • Red and swollen gums that bleed often during brushing or flossing and are tender

to the touch. • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth, exposing the roots. • Milky white or yellowish plaque deposits, usually heaviest between the teeth. • Multiple periodontal abscesses. • Pus between the teeth and gums accompanied by tenderness or swelling. • A consistent foul, offensive odour from the mouth. Keep your dentist up-to-date on your diabetic condition and your physician upto-date on your oral condition. In the early stages, treatment usually involves removing plaque and calculus. If the periodontal disease is more severe or if a patient’s diabetes is not well controlled, treatment will be more specialised. A dentist may recommend more frequent cleanings involving scaling and root planing or periodontal surgery. Call 17 812-222 or email akanksha.ostwal@bsh.com.bh

A NEW DIMENSION IN SPACIOUSNESS The latest concept from this international marque illustrates future luxury strategy.

W

ith the unveiling of the BMW Concept X7 iPerformance at the IAA Cars 2017 show in Frankfurt, the BMW Group is not only pulling back the covers on a new model concept for the luxury segment, it is also introducing a whole new take on luxury for the BMW brand. The Concept X7 iPerformance embodies this understanding of luxury in the form of a striking exterior composed of intently focused lines, and combines it with a generously sized, six-person interior pared down to the essentials: elementary forms, high-class materials and a state-of-the-art infotainment system brimming with connectivity. The Concept’s iPerformance badge denotes the presence of groundbreaking BMW eDrive technology allied with a BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine to create an exceptionally efficient and dynamic plug-in hybrid powertrain that excels in all driving situations – including running with zero local emissions. This study car offers a look ahead to the future production model set to make its debut in 2018. The forthcoming BMW X7 forms part of the largest model offensive in the company’s history. As part of its NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy, the group is seeking to substantially increase its presence in the luxury class. Inside the car’s roomy cabin, clear forms, warm colours and select materials combine to create a highly exclusive, sophisticated ambience. In addition, the large panoramic roof provides a remarkable amount of headroom. The six amply proportioned seats are arranged in three rows, and four of them have an exclusive individual design. The dark, olive-bronze leather – with discreet gold pigmentation – covering the seat bolsters extends the air of exclusivity while the Smoke White leather adorning the remainder of the seats provides an intriguing contrast. Decorative materials are deployed sparingly and the selective use of open-pore ash in a dark-stained, matt finish sets the seal on the natural material experience. Matt and polished aluminium elements have likewise been carefully incorporated. And the luxurious sense of spaciousness is reinforced by strands of laser light in the roof. The forms and surfacing of the instrument panel, centre console and doors allow them to 'wrap around' the driver. And the raised www.womanthismonth.com

seating position provides unbeatable all-round visibility. The 12.3-inch instrument cluster screen and central touchscreen information display are sited at close quarters and a new operating concept allows interactive use of the two displays. Below them, in the centre stack and centre console, the grouping of functions underscores the minimalist approach. Partially backlit crystal glass lends sophisticated flourishes to control elements like the selector lever, iDrive Controller and multifunction buttons on the steering wheel. The two individual seats in the second row offer all the benefits of the front pair, including personalised infotainment with touchscreen monitors. Here, the BMW Concept X7 iPerformance showcases the group’s vision of seamless integration of the customer’s digital world into the car via BMW Connected. For example, passengers here have access to highly personalised, digital services such as their choice of infotainment or office content and content can be shared with others on board. The car’s expansive exterior projects the exclusive experience inside. Clear, vertical proportions with significant ground clearance immediately identify the Concept as an X model. In an all-new interpretation of classical BMW elements, the front-end design groups

together the various facets of the vehicle into a powerful visual statement. The large, vertical kidney grille hogs the attention and links to the upper sections of the slim, elongated twin headlights. A blue X signature in BMW laser light confirms the Concept’s membership of the SAV family. From the side, the BMW Concept X7 iPerformance cuts a sumptuous figure. The long shoulderline stretches the car and injects an athletic tension to the flanks. For the first time in an X vehicle, the wheel arches feature a circular cut and emphasise the exclusivity and elegance of the flanks. The exclusive exterior colour shade Manhattan metallic immerses the car’s surfaces and forms in a dark olive-bronze and, with their bold multi-spoke design, the 23-inch light-alloy wheels combine the muscularity for which BMW’s X models are renowned with the exclusivity of a luxury BMW sedan, while aerodynamically optimised inlays between the spokes reduce drag. A bird’s-eye view of the BMW Concept X7 iPerformance reveals a particular highlight. The panoramic roof is framed by an eyecatching chrome strip. Euro Motors is the Kingdom’s BMW dealer. Have Your Holiday Cake… and Eat It Too!

The summer holiday equation: excellent weather, fabulous location, good food, possibly plenty of grape and good company, together adds up to a wonderful time!

H

owever, the magic all too soon fades away and you find yourself back at home, woken by the habitual sound of your alarm, heralding your return to work and what passes for the normal daily routine. But something is amiss. Feeling unusually heavy? The formal attire a little too snug, perhaps, after that brief respite from routine and the slight overindulgence of the vacation. Sounds familiar? As a fitness-orientated person, you probably train most days of the week, with an abundance of energy radiating out like solar power; so why this current feeling of being unfit and tired? Surely, having just returned from holiday, you’d expect to feel content, happy and recharged? Perhaps the answer is simply that, while you enjoyed all the wonders of the trip, your body missed the exercise. So why not learn from that and plan your next vacation under the motto “happy and fit”. My recent visit to London was a sevenday trip to catch up with friends and staff.

64

October 2017

However, I decided to make an additional plan to run in seven parks — a great way to start your day and include a little sightseeing on the way. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the life of the city before breakfast. My first four days were mainly focused on endurance and running my favourite four parks – Kensington, Hyde, St James' and Green Parks – which adjoin each other. By the Round Pond, I encountered a myriad of sleeping swans, their heads gracefully resting down their bodies; cheerful dogs accompanied by their caring owners; cyclists, walkers, runners and just 'early birds' ensure the park is wide awake at just after 6am. Being a triathlete, I would cycle along the park courtesy of a 'Boris bike'. These bikes, available courtesy of an initiative by London’s former mayor, Boris Johnson, are free of charge for the first half hour and only £2 per hour thereafter. It's a great atmosphere going to the park by bike along with the daily commuters travelling to work. I would park by Princess Gate and

start my run of the four parks from there, making my way down the curving Serpentine river, with its sinuous, mysterious charm, through the arch to St James’s and onward toward Buckingham Palace — calm and www.womanthismonth.com

LIFESTYLE | travel serene in its regal glory as the daily life of the city starts to naturally evolve around its solemn presence. My heart is always with Green Park, its lush gardens and lakes, the diversity of birds and flowers and the happy morning smiles of the passers-by. Running round the park takes only 10 minutes and, if you time it right, you can witness the changing of the guard. There is a lovely waterside café, should you decide to take your breakfast there and enjoy the solitude of the lakes and the birds at play. There are also several points to take the Boris Bikes back to, but, I finished my training with a swim in the Serpentine so dropped it there. The swimming area is open to the general public during the summer months and, if you join the local club, you are free to swim all year round. On my fifth day I ventured further to Holland Park. I had heard of it a long time ago from a dear friend but, until this trip, had been unable to discover it for myself. It was certainly worth the effort — glorious gardens with a host of sporting activities for all. Looking busy and vibrant, this green oasis, in the heart of the city, seems to live a life of its own. The Japanese garden is not to be missed! Large koi carp and water features take you away to the distant land of the Geisha. After my run I headed to Portobello road, famous for its exclusive shopping, to enjoy a well-earned morning cappuccino. Hampstead Heath was my treat for the sixth day, with vast spreading meadows of gold interspersed with the occasional ancient tree and long paths; its dramatic landscapes are inspirational to myself and many artists – the most famous being John Constable, the poet

www.womanthismonth.com

John Keats and the author CS Lewis, who created the fictional world of Narnia following a winter walk on the Heath. This site has more than 55 historical features within its bounds and an abundance of indigenous wildlife and plants. There are a several lovely swimming ponds to try, if you’re brave enough to face the bracing cold water. There's a great atmosphere here by the ponds when the occasional rays of the sun reflect upon the tranquil waters; the cosy beach gets packed with people coming for a dip. Many bring a picnic and enjoy relaxing in the tall grass on a long summer's day or frequent one of the traditional taverns, Jack Straw’s Castle, Mother Huff’s, Spaniard’s Inn or the Bull and Bush, as the hustle and bustle of the city continues around them. My last day was a typical drizzly London

morning. I cycled my Boris Bike to Battersea Park just like one of those ladies who shocked locals by riding in Battersea Park in the 1890s. They had been banned from Hyde Park, ha-ha! Cycle parking is conveniently located just next to the entrance and, having started my run near, perhaps, the park’s most famous element, the Peace Pagoda. I was fortunate enough to encounter the single Buddhist monk who's cared for it, with the help of volunteers and donations, daily since 1985. He walks there every morning at sunrise, gently beating a drum as he goes. The pagoda is in the Old English Garden which flows into a festive row of fountains that resemble the victory parks in Russia – it feels just like home! To my great amusement and surprise I later run into, what appears to be, a tropical garden, which reminds me of my second home – the Middle East! Indeed, this is a sub-tropical garden, as I later read from the information board. Plantings include spices from the Mediterranean, Asia and the Americas, including bamboo, giant reeds, banana and maidenhair trees and dwarf palms – certainly an international park indeed with such a variety of nature to run through; it felt like I had run half the globe! If you're travelling with children, I suggest a detour to the Go Ape adventure, also featured in the park. It will make for two to three fun-packed hours crawling through the forest canopy with suspended obstacles, Tarzan swings and breathtaking zip lines. So next time, why not consider your holiday from a different perspective and stay fit and happy throughout the trip with tri-holiday wellness fun. Icecream colours, bold patterns and a hint of disco – borrowing from the hippie nuances and eloquent lines of the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s is a cool way of mixing old styles and new forms to turn your home into an iconic private universe.

FOOD TO WRITE HOME ABOUT Liz O'Reilly checks out the new menu at this island favourite.

T

hree years ago celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck chose Bahrain and Four Seasons to launch his new restaurant concept, re/Asian Cuisine by Wolfgang Puck and, under the watchful eye of executive chef Brian Becher, it has become a fast favourite. So, when I got news that the kitchen team had been hard at work revamping the menu, I was slightly dismayed but also rather excited to go along for a tasting session. I needn’t have worried, chef Brian assured us this was not “change for change’s sake, we only wanted to make a change if we could do something better”. And he added that certain signature dishes would cause mutiny among his regulars should they disappear! Shown to a window table with the obligatory amazing view

of the Manama night sky from the 50th floor, we were treated to an amuse bouche of cucumber Szechuan, a surprising combination that rendered even this most innocuous of vegetables tasty and moreish. Our first proper taster was sweet corn soup with roasted garlic custard, cherry tomato and black tiger prawn. Served in pretty demitasse cups with a garnish of coriander, this was the ultimate in comfort food; rich and creamy, the garlic saving the sweetcorn from blandness and juicy chunks of prawn providing meaty substance. Next came one of those potentially mutinyinducing dishes – spicy tuna tartare in sesame miso cones. This was my dining companion’s first experience of this little piece of paradise and her stunned silence spoke volumes. The fish provides a slight sweetness, delicately offset with a hidden hint of ginger heat in the miso cones which crumble in the mouth to give an explosion of smoky roasted sesame. A plate of three appetisers followed, each classic in appearance but with a twist added by this talented culinary team. Shrimp and corn chow feung rolls utilise the traditional noodle dough as a wafer-thin roll – a spring roll without the frying – the accompaniments of sweet soy, pickled chilli and Thai basil perfectly tease out the flavours, which, though a similar combination of base ingredients to those found

in the soup, actually taste completely different. A zucchini flower stuffed with Thai basil sausage and deep fried in a crispy coating of home-made rice flour was an interesting combination reminiscent of Bangkok street food; and a wok-fried duck dumpling finished the trio, served on a base of tongue-tingling chilli crisp aioli with sesame and scallion. Again, the sauces elevated this most common of Asian dishes to the extraordinary. The next dish was one of the standouts of the evening, eliciting, as it did, a wonderful food memory from my friend. Grilled tiger prawns, coconut cashew puree, banana blossoms and www.womanthismonth.com

fresh mango. Huge juicy prawns and a wonderful combination of flavours and textures which included a base of Sri Lankan moju (eggplant curry) – a taste which took my friend back to her very early days in the Middle East and a housekeeper who regularly cooked this dish. She has been trying, unsuccessfully, to recreate it ever since and an inquiry to chef Brian brought forth not only the recipe but the lovely philosophy that “this is what it’s all about, it’s how we connect and to see someone have this kind of reaction to my food makes me happy”. We rounded off the savouries with roasted quail 'adobo style' with fondant potatoes, confit of quail’s egg and kalamansi aioli. Another triumph, we were both intrigued by the aioli, a delicate combination of garlic and citrus with a little something else, correctly identified by my partner as fennel. On inquiring about the sauce, our knowledgeable waiter was happy to explain that it is something usually only found in the Philippines – home of adobo – so it was a treat to try something completely new. Almost totally replete, we were both ready to refuse dessert but, purely in the interests of research, we tucked into peanut chocolate shortbread with peanut mousse, chocolate sauce and jackfruit sorbet and Japanese cotton cheesecake with momo peach and timut pepper compote and passion custard. Words are my business but I am virtually at a loss to describe the joy of peach ice-cream/sorbet www.womanthismonth.com

actually made with peaches and bursting with their pure summer flavour – in chef Brian’s words “peaches are summer”. Tthe addition of pepper seems an odd combination but it’s completely unobtrusive and is clearly there just to give the peaches a little extra edge, which it achieves admirably. The cheesecake was super-light, like a combination of the best sponge with a hint of cream cheese perfectly offset by the passion fruit custard. And the peanut dessert, with its topping of a spun chocolate tweel atop an extraordinary crumble base of hazelnuts, salt and a little bit of magic, completed the meal perfectly. At each stage chef Brian had explained the dishes, telling us what’s to enjoy about each one and how it came about. He proudly reeled off the list of Asian nationalities in the kitchen of this most democratic of eateries, which helped to explain the variety and authenticity of the new menu. And we were equally impressed with the charm and knowledge of our server. In conclusion, if one is going to go out socialising on a work night, I can think of few better ways to do so than 50 floors up with amazing views, a congenial host and fabulous food. re/ Asian Cuisine by Wolfgang Puck delivered on all three in spades. To find that the adjoining Blue Moon Lounge now has a ladies’ night on Saturdays was the cherry on the cake – get those miso cones on order, we will most definitely be back!

his female chef is making history as the first woman in charge of a kitchen at any of Bahrain’s expat clubs. Filipina chef Vida Doria Padilla did her culinary studies in Manila and has been in the Middle East 10 years, most recently working with the Gulf Hotel and Calexico before taking over the kitchen at Bahrain Yacht Club. She specialises in various cuisines including Italian, French and Mexican but says her favourite dish is seafood paella as "it reminds me of my beloved mum". She adds: “When I was young I used to help my mother in preparing our meal for the day, and this developed my interest in cooking. “I love to serve my dishes to my whole family and our friends. I saw things in my collection recipe books, I fell in love with cooking then and it certainly inspired me to become a chef. “Today, food brings balance to my life; this is not only my career but what best describes who I am. Food now means the future for me. Food has changed its meaning to me; just like the seasons, it is ever-changing in so many ways and will continue to be throughout my

life. This career path is for people who are go-getters who want to create and keep creating every day, and who want to share their love of food with family, friends or even a stranger that they will never meet.” Chef Vida shares with us that paella recipe which she so loves.

METHOD • In a medium bowl mix together olive oil, paprika, turmeric powder, dried oregano and salt and pepper. Stir with calamari ring, cuttlefish, white fish and shrimp. Cover and keep aside. • In large skillet pan over medium heat sauté olive oil, garlic, chilli flakes and rice. Stirring while cooking to coat rice with oil for about five minutes, stir in saffron, bay leaves, lemon zest and seafood stock. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce to a low heat. Simmer for 15 to 20 minutes till the rice is cooked. • Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a separate skillet on a medium heat; stir in the marinated seafood with onion and red bell pepper, green peas and mussels; cover for five minutes until cooked. • Mix half of the seafood into cooked rice and put onto a serving dish. Add the remaining seafood with lemon wedges to serve. • Buen provecho. www.womanthismonth.com

Gazing Raphael tells us what’s written in the stars this month

Libra

Having made great strides on the business front, you are now able to plan your way forward and, with the right strategy in place, you should be able to extend your reach and achieve great things this month. Good news by post will also spur you on creatively whilst a special person in your life could surprise you with a very tempting offer. It’s a good time for you right now and you need to make the most of it without any reservations.

Scorpio

Sagittarius

It’s no secret that you are struggling with a dilemma but you are going to have to come to terms with the situation – and – if it is proving too difficult, perhaps get the issue dealt with once and for all. The reason it has such a profound effect is that the problem impacts on your relationship with a close friend. Don’t be afraid to reach out and engage.

Capricorn

Your competitive spirit comes to the fore this month as you accept a challenge from a friend, which, although made in good humour, soon becomes more serious as you both decide to up the stakes. There could be something else behind this driving you both and it might be wise to talk through your actions together before serious damage is done. Remember, at the heart of this you are friends.

Aquarius

Watch your step and tread carefully in romantic circles this month because eyes are watching and waiting to catch you out. You www.womanthismonth.com

October is going to be the month when you finally get around to cementing your future in the business arena as a career ambition is finally realised. It might be something you have been working on for a few months now but it won’t be until the 19th that things are confirmed in writing and a real commitment made. It’s going to mean a lot of changes but the long-term benefits will be huge.

Gemini

October is likely to be a month of reflection for many of you. You may have been through a trying period of late and much of this could be down to your own failings. It’s no good trying to mend the ship after it is already sinking. You need to start planning a little better and take your responsibilities more seriously. For many of you, it’s not just you who will be affected by these actions. Health issues could be affecting you and they may even be hitting your mood. In truth, any treatment you are receiving may not be providing you with a solution and you should not be afraid to question the medical course your GP or consultant has suggested. You know your own body best, so speak up! On occasions you don’t voice what you are thinking.

Taurus

Cancer may think you have covered all your tracks but experience tells us that this is very rarely the case and, unless you want to become the victim of your own desires, analyse exactly whether you can really afford to take the risk! Fleeting pleasures are just that but the impact of succumbing to temptation could make you regret so much more in the long run.

Passions run high for many of you this month as you are faced with a difficult choice when it comes to a loved one. Your discovery of an indiscretion in a relationship will test your commitment to a partner and could very well see you deciding to take a step back or even ending a long-term marriage or union. Ultimately it all remains in your hands but don’t stall on a decision. The most important thing you can do here is to be decisive.

Pisces

Leo

This October sees you thinking back on past romances and still realising that the ache of a recent relationship has not quite left you yet. This could account for your general dissatisfaction with life, along with the uncertainty that you are feeling about your future. However, your destiny lies in your own hands so make sure you stay in the driving seat. If you are harbouring regrets then do something about it.

Aries

Relationships are often like the seasons, changeable and unpredictable. For some of you October will be a month when a relationship goes through a positive high, which is just as well since things have been hard going recently. The next few months, should bring about a more balanced and healthy cycle that will see you cementing your ties and planning further ahead into the future.

Not a sign to ever stop still, as a major project slowly reaches its conclusion, so you are already thinking about what challenge to undertake. Chief amongst the opportunities is a major business investment that could land you significant financial rewards later. Of course you do need to also think about taking some time out to relax because there is more to life than just one business deal after another.

Virgo

A face from the past will return to your life, bringing an opportunity to progress in a different direction. It might not be something you initially feel suits you but there is no question of it enhancing your future prospects. It could all come down to you having to decide just how comfortable you are in your current situation and whether you can find the courage to make a change that will lead to more exciting things.
