Best on the Island I’m new in Bahrain and I was recently introduced to your magazine. It fell into my hands by accident and I am very pleased it did. You have no idea how helpful your “150 Pearls of Bahrain” list is for a newcomer. The fact that it is divided by category is another big plus for me. Now I have a reference on where to go for specific things. I will keep watching out for your magazine from now on! Beth.

Letter 150th Issue I would like to give my best wishes to your publication. Congratulations! I hope you keep up the good work. I love receiving your magazine every month. The first things that I always check are the fashion trends and tips and the interviews. I really enjoy the fact that you find and give coverage to local talent. It is nice to see that we have interesting women doing amazing things on this island. Fatima.

Denim Mania Who doesn’t have a trusted pair of jeans? We all do, but it is good to see different cuts and designs in this practical material. I really enjoyed the article “Genius Jeans” that showed three ideas of how to create a look with them. The jumpsuit is quite common, but a pleated skirt and a dress? Really nice! Next time I go shopping, I will definitely look for a denim dress. It seems easy-to-wear and, with the right accessories, it can be transformed into perfect casual-chic. Lilian.

A new visual of Lady Gaga’s Miss Asia Kinney will also be circulating in print, online, on outdoor media globally, and on social media via #coachpups. The pets were photographed by Steven Meisel. "I'm so excited to have Toulouse starring in the Coach Pups campaign and to partner with the brand in efforts to protect animals from cruelty and harm. Can’t begin to express how thankful I am to Coach for bringing this important issue into the spotlight and for their generous donation to No-Kill Los Angeles, a Best Friends Animal Society Initiative to make Los Angeles the nation’s largest no-kill city by 2017,” says Ariana Grande. NEW SEASON SNEAK PEEK

It’s that time of the year again when we are caught between seasons in the fashion world. The pre-autumn collections are here to put us in the mood for the new season. Check them out!

STATEMENT FOOTWEAR WINTER MOOD

Gucci’s winter options reflect classic elements. The versatile jeans are teamed with a knitted top and tweed jacket. The traditional straight cut is painted in easy-to-wear shades such as black, white and eye-catching red. Masculine Oxfords and a sleek, black handbag complete the cold-weather dress code.

Your choice of shoes is an important element to define your look, so if you like neutral shades and clean lines for your clothes, be inventive with your footwear. Tory Burch espadrilles come with laser cuts in forest green to steal the fashion show. This is a perfect choice for the transitional weather.

MADE FOR WALKING

Booties are the first sign that we are allowed to start taking out our cold weather wardrobe. This item of footwear ends at the ankle and usually has a small heel or none at all. They are best worn with leggings or, if you like to be creative with your looks, try them with skirts, in all sorts of lengths and styles. These ones are from the Jimmy Choo pre-autumn collection.

18 September 2015

PERSONAL CARRYALL The practical woman needs a functional carrier and the cross-body handbag is a great solution. Celine’s collection brings a variety of options in winter colours. The clean designs are easy to mix and match. If you like to carry half of your wardrobe with you, this bag is maybe not the best option for your everyday wear. However, if you’re seeking the minimal look, embrace the trend!

www.womanthismonth.com

COOL COATS

Take your leather out of the wardrobe to get some air. Sooner than you think you could be wearing it again. At Michael Kors invest in a leather trenchcoat to kick-off the cold season. The brand is also reviving leopard print in its accessories collection. This pattern is actually an easy-tospot autumn and winter staple.

SECOND SKIN The technology applied in the fashion industry has had a big impact in fabric development. Nonflexible textiles such as leather, after different treatments, are now easily treated to create all sorts of designs. This Alexandre McQueen at Saks Fifth Avenue dress represents the versatility of this type of material. Don’t forget to look for eco-friendly options! www.womanthismonth.com

Style Radar Store openings, film screenings and TV appearances are some of the extra work celebrities have to do and they must look always their best. Get inspired by their outfits!

GIGI HADID

The American model chose a 70s-inspired look for the 2015 CFDA Fashion Awards held at Lincoln Center in New York City. The metallic paillette-embroidered jumpsuit with bell-bottom trousers is from the Resort 2016 Michael Kors Collection and is an outstanding pick to dress a slim body like hers. You have to be quite bold to pull this off.

ARIEL WINTER

The young actress picked a Paule Ka number to attend the ATAS Screening of the Modern Family season finale in Los Angeles. The short leather dress is a great choice for her age and its smart cut makes it look even better. The length is actually not that short and the fact that it’s not a tight fit is a big thumbs up!

CHLOE MORETZ

The blond, rising Hollywood star wore a pair of black nappa Stuart Weitzman sandals while attending the 5th Annual Coach and Friends of the High Line Summer Party in New York City. Her casual, yet eyecatching choice comes from the Coach Autumn 2015 collection and makes a smart pick for this daytime event.

BELLA HEATHCOTE

Another young lady showing off her beauty on the red carpet. The Australian star, best known for her role in Tim Burton’s film, Dark Shadows, was spot on at Entertainment Week’s ComicCon Celebration in San Diego. She wore a burgundy floral lace spaghetti strap top with golden bee patches and a light tan nappa leather pleated skirt from Gucci. The romantic look goes very well with her angelic and soft features.

www.womanthismonth.com

MICHELLE MONAGHAN

The American actress wore a black Salvatore Ferragamo dress during her appearance at The View TV show in New York City. The number has a tan and black python bodice and is part of the brand’s spring and summer 2015 collection. She perfectly complemented the look with caramel highheeled sandals. Pure laidback elegance.

JESSICA ALBA

To celebrate the opening of Tory Burch’s Paris flagship store, the actress wore an autumn 2015 Jacquard gown and sandals from the American brand. The mid-calf dress is one of those stand-alone pieces that you don’t have to add anything to. No accessory is required and the hairstyle should be kept minimum.

oose tops are always a way out to minimise problem areas however, be careful! Sometimes the trick turns against the magician and you may end looking bigger. So look for tops that, despite the looseness, have some sort of shape or subtle details. To spice-up the outfit, search for interesting colour combinations. Black and soft pink work really well for a classic and classy result. Chunky necklaces and smart handbags are the best final touches. You can wear this look for a day at work or casual weekend dinner. www.womanthismonth.com

SHIRT DRESS

his kind of dress is an easy-to-go piece and usually comes with a belt that marks your waistline creating an interesting silhouette. When going for pieces that have some sort of tie or belt, don’t forget that it must lay right on your waist and not in the area where your breasts end. Otherwise it will create a lot of volume on your chest area. Another important thing is to leave behind some fashion myths, like the one that says larger ladies should avoid prints. Embrace them, mainly the modern ones like the one in this look. Trendy shades and patterns will give oomph to your outfit. Also go for bold accessories to impress.

VISUAL EFFECT

resses are always a way to look feminine and stand out in the crowd. Graphic prints are a great way to play with illusion resulting in a slimmer look. However the biggest trick here is the solid colour applied in the waist area that gives the illusion of a fake (and to-die-for) silhouette. This optical distortion only works in tight dresses, so you must be comfortable with a fitted shape. Another detail that is worth mentioning, is that if plus size is your style, opt for tops and dresses with some sleeve. It doesn’t have to be long, but a bit longer than the usual like that shown in this look. Accessorise yourself and enjoy the compliments! September 2015

A Journey to Remember Bahraini Sawsan Taher first picked up a camera seriously just four years ago, but following her passion recently took her to Ethiopia’s remote Omo River Valley from where she shares with us this series of stunning images.

“S

ince I was in school I have loved watching documentary programmes,” says Sawsan. “I’ve always had a curiosity about different nations and their people. Information about tribes around the world fascinates me, especially remote peoples, how they manage and their societies.” That curiosity came to the fore when Sawsan got her first professional camera in 2011. She says: “I had been taking pictures almost all my life but when I got my first professional camera, that really opened things up for me and I started focussing on different kinds of photography.” Specialising in macro-subjects, such as tiny insects, Sawsan took part in the Bahrain Wildlife Exhibition and she is also keen on capturing street life and landscapes. She joined various camera clubs and soon discovered one in the GCC that had recently visited with the Masai in Kenya but when she asked to go on the next trip she was told it was men only. “They said they did not accept women because of the places they go to but I wasn’t willing to give up and the guy suggested another group. There was an advertisement

for a trip to Ethiopia that was open to females so I signed up to get some more information. “This is a trend for people getting together over Instagram, usually photographers, to visit less accessible places. The guy putting together to the group had previously been to the area so was able to organise guides and hotels etc. “There were another three ladies in the group, one from Qatar and two from Bahrain and, I believe, we’re the first GCC women ever to visit the Lower Omo Valley. “It was honestly a great challenge. We were there for 11 days and visited five different tribes and we spent a lot of time driving and travelling between them which was pretty tough going over rough terrain. “Guides make a payment to the village elders to allow travellers access and in one village we had to run away after the people got angry over a payment misunderstanding. “Visiting the Mursi tribe we were escorted by an armed member of the Ethiopian National Guard because we were warned they can be aggressive. “To visit the Dassanech tribe I crossed the Omo River in a hollowed out tree trunk and

on a trip to Chamo Lake there was lots of bird life, huge crocodiles and several hippos. “I was sad to see the ‘mingi’ children, who are considered to be bad luck and are usually killed if they are not taken in by the Omo Child organisation which provides schooling and accommodation for them. “But overall it was a brilliant experience, one I will never forget and I would love to go back, perhaps to camp next time and spend longer getting to know the people and really experiencing their lifestyles.” One of Sawsan’s pictures from the trip, showing a family of the Hamar tribe, has since won a gold medal from the American Photographic Society. You can follow her on Instagram at Finish_Last.

MURSI TRIBE Perhaps the most famous of the tribes thanks to the tradition among the women of inserting a plate into their bottom lips, the Mursi have featured in a television programme for the UK’s BBC and are very popular with visitors, despite being armed the hilt, often unfriendly and having a reputation for aggression and even, it’s claimed, going so far as to kill and eat their enemies – hence the need for an armed guard! Fascinating to look at the Mursi adorn themselves with bright paints and elaborate headdresses made of bone and woven leather. Before the lip plates, young women start by putting small and then progressively larger plates in their ears to stretch their earlobes. As they reach their mid-teens, the lip plate is inserted and, though it is seen as a status symbol, the wearers have no bottom teeth and must live on a diet of mushy food. The Mursi are a traditionally pastoral people for whom their livestock are extremely important to the point that calves will often be kept inside the family hut to protect them. Cattle are not just valuable possessions but are also commonly used to pay the bride price in a tribal marriage.

HAMAR TRIBE This is one of the best-known tribes in the region as both women and men use oil and ochre mud to paint their hair and bodies giving them a bronze-like cast to their skin. The women twist their hair into locks, a style distinctive to the tribe. The men, as in all the tribes, adorn themselves with white body paint, giving a leopard-like effect alongside the bronzed skin. Mothers use white paint on their babies to ward off evil spirits and small boys paint each other since there are no mirrors. Married Hamar women wear two heavy iron rings around their necks. However, the tribe practises polygamy (men can marry as often as they wish) and the first wife sports an additional torque with a phallic protrusion signifying her status. Women decorate themselves with cowrie shells, glass, seeds and metal beads and wear beaded goat-skin dresses while courageous men, who have killed an enemy or dangerous animal, wear a style of mud cap decorated with feathers. The may also have their chests marked with rows of hero scars to show the number of enemies slain.

DASSENACH TRIBE This tribe is quite isolated, reached by crossing the Omo River in hollowed out tree trunk canoes. Women wear pleated cow skin skirts and many necklaces and bracelets. And all sorts of recycled objects are used for adornment such as bottle tops attached to caps and rows and rows of brightly coloured beads used as necklaces and bracelets. Shells are also widely worn since the tribe is so close to the river and arm bangles each have a meaning. Girls in the tribe are usually married at the age of 17 and boys at 20.

KONSO TRIBE Unlike their tribal counterparts, the Konso frequently wear Western clothes as well as their more traditional dress. Their village is hard to get to situated on a series of hard rocky slopes and is reached through a gate and a system of winding maze-like alleys which form a security system. Though friendly, the Konso are the tribe Sawsan and her fellow travellers had to flee thanks to a payment mistake which saw some of the group surrounded by villagers loudly demanding cash!

KARA TRIBE The Kara live in a unique location on the banks of the Omo River and, again, white paint is used from childhood to ward off evil spirits. Colourful beads and cloths are used to designate position and family association and to attract the opposite sex. Women scar their chests, believing it makes them look beautiful. Men’s scars represent foes or dangerous animals killed. On the outskirts of the village they had built huts for food storage, the only one of the tribes to do so. Sawsan says: “I found the Kara to be the friendliest of the tribes we visited, perhaps they are more used to visitors. But I was sad, when we were leaving to see a school building but when I asked our guide he explained that many of the children don’t go to school as they are needed to fetch water, watch the animals or other tasks. Those that do go to school often run out when they hear a vehicle coming as they know the visitors will give them gifts and, sometimes, money.”

MINGI CHILDREN Many of the river tribes are still extremely superstitious believing evil spirits or a curse will bring bad fortune such as drought, famine, disease or death if they do not kill, so called “Mingi” children who are born in the village. Children can be considered Mingi for various reasons such as being born out of wedlock or from a marriage or pregnancy that has not been sanctioned by the village elders, children whose top teeth come through before their bottom ones and twins. Traditionally, all these children should be killed. However, Sawsan visited the organisation Omo Child which saves, educates and rehabilitates these children, giving them a chance at a normal life. g

Pampering for any Occasion Whether you’re a frazzled mum celebrating the end of the long, long school holidays with some much-needed pampering or a child-free traveller ready for a new look as you jet off on a cut-price, out-of-season break, you won’t go wrong with one of this salon’s packages, testifies Liz O’Reilly.

I

arrived at Yara Beauty Lounge in Amwaj not really knowing what to expect. Many of the venues around The Lagoon are quite small and specialised but, sitting at the base of one of the Zawia towers, YBL, as it’s also known, is light, airy, spacious and rather luxurious. To prepare for my upcoming overseas trip, I’d planned a Keratin hair treatment, but one look at my locks convinced salon manager Georgina White that deep conditioning was not really necessary and she suggested a restyle instead. I should point out here that I’m a hairdresser’s worst nightmare. I usually have only a vague idea (if any at all) of what I want and expect them to be almost psychic in interpreting my sketchy descriptions. Not surprising then that I have been avoiding the salon since my last hair-raising experience in January, opting instead for a succession of up-dos, with varying degrees of success, and resorting to the kitchen scissors when my fringe becomes a vision-impairing danger zone more suited to a Shetland pony (on which the style would be far cuter). To say Georgina had her work cut out (pun intended) would be an understatement, but she was more than up to the challenge both listening to me and then consulting as she went along to create the exact long, layered

style I was craving making sure I still have enough hair to put up, but when down it softly frames my face. I always think, the true sign of a good cut is that you can wash it and it will fall back into place with the minimum of effort and, the next morning, I was proved right when I did just that. Admittedly, my own effort didn’t have that salon perfect swing but the style and shape were intact with little more than a comb through. From the hair station I moved onto the beauty salon for a collagen mani-pedi, something I’d never heard of before. Hands and feet are first placed into thin plastic gloves lined with moisturiser before the regular trimming, filing and buffing of the mani-pedi, then it’s on with plastic/rubber mits and socks pre-filled with a hot liquid paraffin mixture. This is allowed to set and cool around the hands and feet before being peeled off to reveal visibly moisturised, soft, silky skin – an effect that is still noticeable several days later. I opted for bright popping nail colours to complement my holiday wardrobe and, as these were expertly applied, I was treated to a neck and shoulder massage which started out painful, as the therapist got to work on my knots, and ended with me feeling as if the

TIPS FOR SAFER DRIVING One of the Kingdom’s leading automotive dealers offers driving tips to help keep you safe during the hottest months of the year.

B

ahrain’s extreme weather puts additional strain on mechanical components like cooling systems, batteries, tyre pressure and air conditioning systems. Euro Motors suggests the following self-check tips to make sure your car is in top working condition.

hot engine needs all the lubrication it can get. All service information, including when the oil needs changing or topping up, is projected on to the on-board computer inside all BMWs, making it easy and efficient for owners to receive service information.

CHECK THE PRESSURE Never underestimate the importance of having your tyres in pristine condition. For the correct tyre pressure, simply check and see what is listed on the side of the driver's door, the glove compartment door or in the owner's manual. When checking the tyre tread, keep an eye out for an uneven wear pattern, meaning that the tyre is more worn on one edge than the other. This usually means that your car needs a wheel alignment. Also, run your fingers along the tread and feel for lumps. The presence of lumps could mean that the tyre is not balanced correctly.

AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM During the summer the AC requires more power than usual, which puts pressure on the battery and generator. Ensure that cool air is coming out of the vents and that you have the sufficient coolant levels in the compressor.

OIL CHANGE Oil keeps hardworking engine parts running clean, smooth and, most importantly, cool. This is particularly important in the summer since a

BRAKE EASY Your brakes are the single most important safety feature on your car, especially in the summer when the roads can become overheated and slippery. Here are some signs that your brakes may be in need of a check-up: • Your brake pedal is very hard and resistant. • Your brake pedal rests too low or too high. • Indication or warning lights on the dashboard. • Loud scraping and grinding sounds coming from the brakes.

BUCKLE UP Euro Motors recommends that you make sure all passengers in your vehicle are buckled up properly at all times. INSURANCE & ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE Make sure that you have the correct motor insurance to cover you on the road in case you are involved in a collision. Also check with your insurance company what your roadside assistance entitles you to. IN CASE OF EMERGENCY Euro Motors offers a whole host of 24-hour roadside assistance options and insurance packages. Should you find yourself in an emergency, you are advised to stay calm and follow these two simple steps: • Turn your hazard lights on and park on the far right lane of the road out of the way from other drivers • Keep your boot open and use your redemergency triangle to warn other motorists that you are stationary. BOTOX FOR YOUR HAIR!

Get the hair you’ve always dreamed of with a revolutionary new treatment that will leave you with smoother and shinier locks, now available on the island.

J

oz Salon & Spa introduces a radical new treatment that promises to bring life to listless hair. A Botox treatment with collagen – designed for all types of hair - BTX Smoothing is a revolutionary product in the line of hair straightening technologies. Its formula contains a proprietary combination of keratin, wheat protein, aloe vera and collagen processed in a unique way to favour the infusion of amino acids deeply into the hair cortex. “BTX Smoothing delivers spectacular results repairing hair and reversing damage from overtreating or environmental factors,” explains Joz Salon’s hairdresser. “This product contains supplements to nurture damaged cortices, reconstruct shaft cuticles and give lifeless hair health and strength.” Results are extreme repair for all hair types, smooth, healthy and shiny hair and effective protection against environmental factors. Q: How long will the smoothing treatment results last? A: Although designed for all hair types, BTX Smoothing treatment produces the best results in fine hair and can last for up to five months. Q: Can the smoothing treatment be used for coloured, highlighted or relaxed hair? A: Yes, in fact, it works to repair damage caused by chemical treatments. It’s recommended to wait two weeks between any chemical services and adjust iron temperature based on hair type as listed in the instructions. The treatment effect lasts longer in previously chemically treated hair than in virgin hair. Q: Should hair be coloured before or after the treatment application? A: The best time to have the smoothing treatment is right after permanent colouring, semi-permanent colouring or highlights. The treatment seals the colour in, making it last longer and look more vibrant. If colour is applied before the treatment, it is recommended to wait at least two weeks. The exception to the rule is the Apple Keratin Treatment, which can change the colour of coloured hair, so in this case, colouring should be done after the treatment.

46 September 2015

Q: Should hair be cut before or after the treatment? A: It is recommended to have hair cut after the treatment, as it will have a smoother texture and will lie differently. Q: How long after the treatment can hair be washed? A: In the case of Apple Keratin treatment, it’s best to wash hair immediately after. For the other treatments, wash hair after 24 hours. Q: What should be done if hair gets wet during the 24-hour waiting period? A: Blow-dry and flat iron with medium to low heat as soon as possible. Q: Can hair be pulled back or clipped up during the 24-hour waiting period? A: No. Avoid putting any pressures on the hair from clips, ponytail holders, hats or sunglasses. If this happens, hair should be flat ironed before washing. Q: What results can be expected after the smoothing treatment? A: Hair will be more manageable, easy to style, resistant to humidity, feel noticeably

softer and silkier with added life, shine and vibrancy. Q: How often can the treatment be repeated? Should it be done to the whole head or just the new growth? A: Every four months or as needed, depending on the type of hair. However, the minimum interval should be 30 days. It should be done to the whole hair. Q: Can regular shampoo and conditioner be used after treatment? A: To maximize treatment results, it is recommended to use the Amazon Keratin maintenance line (keratin care shampoo, keratin care conditioner and deep hair mask). These products are free of salt and sulphates and were specially formulated to prolong the effects of the keratin treatment. Q: Can the treatments be done for pregnant or nursing women? A: It is not recommended. Call 17 369-133 (Juffair), 16 031-120 (Amwaj) and 17 756-449 (Awali) for appointments. www.womanthismonth.com

showcase MIDDLE EAST MEDICAL CENTER

DETOX THE NATURAL WAY Say goodbye to endless diets as this medical centre introduces colon hydrotherapy, one of the safest, natural and most hygienic methods to detox the colon and shed excess weight.

A

nyone who suffers from bloating, abdominal distension, gas pains, stomach aches or who gets full very quickly on eating may be an ideal candidate for colon hydrotherapy, which is now offered at Middle East Medical Center. Colon hydrotherapy works through safe and gentle infusion of purified warm water into the colon, under safe conditions, without using chemicals or drugs. It is the natural solution to conditions which interfere with normal functions of the colon. “When it comes to weight loss, there are hundreds of programmes that you can try,” says the centre spokesperson. “One of the best ways to help you lose weight is not really only through a diet, but also through colon cleansing. “Colon hydrotherapy helps to flush all the harmful toxins from your body. Accompanied with a nominal diet, it is one of the most effective ways for many people to lose weight. If you are serious about losing weight, you should definitely consider doing colon cleanses.

50 September 2015

“The colon cleanse is designed to be a 45-day programme, depending on the individual case and condition of the person undergoing the programme. If you are able to make it to the end of the 45-day programme, you can lose as much as 15lbs, subject to adherence to dietary schedules. The amount of weight loss is entirely dependent upon your body type, but you are able to lose a good deal of weight in a short amount of time thanks to the fact that you are cleaning out your body and not adding any additional weight to it.” In addition, all kinds of skin problems (acne, psoriasis, eczema, etc.) can usually benefit from a therapeutic course of colon irrigation. The skin is the largest excretory organ in the body. When the colon is sluggish or clogged up or there are a lot of toxins in the body, the skin has much more to excrete. Unhealthy skin is usually a sign of an unhealthy colon and no amount of antibiotics, skin creams or medications will alleviate the problem until the cause is addressed. Vitamin A plays an important role in skin health, so when the colon is adequately cleansed, vitamin A is

more effectively absorbed through the intestinal tract. Cleansing also gives relief from intestinal constipation, which in turn causes cellular constipation and increases the workload of the other excretory organs - kidneys, skin, liver, lungs and the lymphatic system. Colon hydrotherapy is available at Middle East Medical Center’s Hidd branch. Call 17 464-848 for more information. www.womanthismonth.com

he Rimal Spa in Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain is built to pamper all your senses. With special promotions during September, it’s an excellent opportunity to book an indulgent session now. We got to sample one of its best sellers, the Harley Street Hollywood Radiance facial with a 30–minute back massage as part of the package. After filling in information about my skin type and problem areas, my therapist Johanna escorted me to the treatment room. She began with the massage; first a few minutes of reflexology and then moving on to my back. Using Swedish massage movements she kneaded out the tension and tightened

knots while I fought falling asleep. After this, she gently cleansed my face and began with the facial. Specially designed for sensitive skin, this treatment does not involve steam and extraction. Instead a highly concentrated

enzyme mask is used to exfoliate and pull the sebum and impurities out of the pores. Next, the eyerefining serum is applied followed by the spot buster. Johanna then lightly massaged a glycol serum into my face and concluded by

applying an oil-free hydrator. Harley Street products are a favourite among many celebrities and use stem cell technology to replenish and restore skin texture. This facial evens out complexion, leaving skin visibly brighter, just like the flawless airbrushed models you see in the glossies. The back massage and facial is priced at BD38. showcase INFINITI

CAPTIVATING SENSES

Woman This Month’s editor, Fernanda Langhammer, was invited to spend a day with this lush automobile. Find out her impressions!

D

riving a luxury car is a pleasure nobody can take away from you. Trust me, it makes the journey pleasant despite all the distress that traffic or other drivers can cause you. That was exactly my feeling while driving the Infiniti QX70. I was more interested in exploring all the amazing features than worrying about how long the trip was going to take. Not only is the car incredibly comfortable but driving is smooth and you don’t hear the annoying outside noises, you just concentrate on the delight of motoring. Reaching my destination was not important, but the journey itself was an experience that stays with you. This luxury crossover has an array of the most-wanted features a car can offer. Equipped with an intelligent cruise control, it automatically slows down if traffic stops and accelerates back when the way is clear, according to your desired speed. The acceleration swell transforms mechanical power into emotional excitement. Its precise engine tuning unleashes torque over a broader rev range and the feeling of acceleration is designed to increase the faster you go. The QX70 comes with 21-inch alloy wheels that aim to heighten both performance and visual appeal. Actually, the design is one of the things that you first notice in the QX70. However, the beauty is not only the bold exterior, trademark of Infiniti’s vehicles, but also the interior. It feels as if it’s made embrace you!

If your car is driven by more than one person, the seat position memory is an amazing highlight. All buttons to control the technology systems are positioned at your fingertips with fine finishing; however, the crème de la crème for me was that the seat moves when you open the door so you can make a dignified exit. Another exciting item is the around view monitor. This ground-breaking technology from Infiniti gives you a virtual 360-degree view of the surroundings while parking. Just perfect! Impossible to go wrong even if you are in a hurry. Together with the amazing cameras, another highlight is the air-conditioner from which, in a hot month in a climate like ours, efficiency is mandatory. This one not only cools the air instantly, but also circulates it onto the front seats. Reading more, I discovered that the

advanced climate control system features an air purifier, which actively cleans the air inside the cabin. It removes up to 99.5 per cent of allergens from the air coming in from outside. The auditory experience is powered by 11 speakers, including two subwoofers from Bose, that deliver your music or news with depth and clarity and I can’t forget to mention that the sound is optimised by the interior of the QX70. If safety is one of your priorities when purchasing a new car, than Infiniti QX70 will definitely tick all the boxes. Ultra-highstrength steel is used in areas critical to preserving your safety in case of a collision. This material has twice the strength of conventional steel. Not only does the material add to the vehicle’s resiliency, it also makes it lighter overall. Electronic brake force distribution adjusts the amount of force applied to the front and rear wheels for improved braking performance which helps the brakes wear more evenly and reduces the front-end ‘dive’ during heavy braking. To complete the whole safety package, the Infiniti puts an array of airbags between you and an impact, that will inflate based on the severity of the crash. As you can see, despite enjoying the whole driving experience, I did my research on this exceptional machine. I believe the QX70 is a great option for both men and women with eye-catching and versatile features that are complemented by a modern design. Different Strokes There’s an impressive variety of not just paint colours but textures and finishes available in the market. Ankita Mamgain finds out more about special paints for your specific needs.

I

n addition to protection from the elements, paint, in many ways, provides the same for your walls and furniture as clothes do for your body. Just as you consider the season, functionality and comfort, mood and trends when picking your outfit, similar thought goes into choosing the paint for a particular area or object. How dry or wet will a place be, the scope for creativity, different finishes and textures and, of course, what’s new in the market? Paint technology has come so far that some truly innovative products are available. These high-tech options not only look great but also provide excellent solutions for some specific needs. BATHROOMS AND KITCHENS All bathrooms and kitchens have one thing in common – they get wet. Kitchens have to deal with the added problem of grime that settles on the walls over time. Not all paint types can withstand the type of humidity created

58 September 2015

by baths and showers or an oily coating. In both cases, it is important to stay away from paints that will tend to develop mould due to excessive moisture. Paint companies have designed special emulsions that can withstand high moisture and temperature conditions. The market is filled with products that claim to be waterresistant or even waterproof and resist the growth of mould and mildew and are hence ideal for these places. And yes, they are, in most cases, effective as they provide a special layer of protection but in addition to getting the right paint, you also need to ensure that there no blockages or leaking pipes. Both bathrooms and kitchens need good ventilation to get the inside air out. A 100 per cent acrylic, water-based paint with soft gloss finish is usually recommended for kitchen and bathroom walls and ceilings. This can provide excellent protection against

stains and mould. Ensure the formula has some preservative, which is mildew resistant. Read the paint label for the following properties: stain and scrub resistant, washable, high adhesive strength and you’ve really hit the jackpot if it says anti-bacterial protection as well. KIDS ROOMS This is another area to which paint companies have devoted a lot of research and development, coming up with innovative solutions. One of them is the ‘dry-erase’ type of paint that is both fun and functional, turning the walls and doors into activity zones for the kids with scribbles easily removed. Dry-erase paint can be used to spark creativity, keep track of tasks or to-dos or just be a bit silly. Paint the doors to your kids' bedrooms to post reminders, chores or loving notes of encouragement or make the toy chest just as www.womanthismonth.com

fun as the things inside. If you have some extra paint left over, consider using it on non-traditional objects, like chairs or picture frames. This paint will take at least a week to dry and cure. It is best if you don't remove any tape until it has finished drying, as this can lead to unexpected results depending on the state of the paint when you lift it. You will also need to purchase high-quality dry-erase markers. The ordinary ones don't write well and will be a huge disappointment when your kids are all ready to go Picasso on the walls. DOORS AND CABINETS There’s a plethora of choices in the market that you might want to try for your doors and cabinets. However, before you start, you need to decide the colour scheme and if you want the cabinetry to lead or follow the space composition. Once you’ve decided the palette, the finish should be your next concern. www.womanthismonth.com

For wooden surfaces, most manufacturers offer painted, stained, glazed, antiqued and distressed finishes. Stains come in a variety of pigments and allow the wood's natural grain to show. A glaze is a semi-transparent wash of colour applied over a paint to add dimension and depth. Glazes offer heavier contrast and less consistency and appear darker in the crevices, highlighting detailing. You can even go for an antiqued patina, which is hand-rubbed for added character, allowing cabinetry to appear old beyond its years.

If paint is your choice, picking the right one is key. Traditionally used oil paints, though tough to clean, dry harder than latex, providing a more durable finish for trim and moulding on kitchen cabinets. A new, waterborne alkyd formula is becoming increasingly popular for this purpose as well. These go on like an oil paint (smooth flow and levelling), have the low VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and clean up like latex with just soap and water instead of paint thinner or mineral spirits. lassicism and modernity might seem to be opposites, but not when fused together with flair and imagination. Herein lies the essence of the Premier collection from Seiko. In 2015, Premier is true to the inspiration and spirit that has always characterised the collection, but brings a fresh look that is of the moment and right up-to-date. While the

Fresh Beginning Another school year is about to start and Ghada Salem sheds some light on how to have a smooth kickoff.

T

he start of the new school year, or joining a new school after a relocation, can be a daunting prospect for both children and parents. Mums in Bahrain team has put together some ideas, listings and resources that can help you and your children start school with confidence and success. PREPARING FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR Getting yourself organised in advance helps to make the return to school as pleasant as possible. Here are some ideas on things to do a couple of weeks before school begins: • Change your child’s sleeping and eating schedules to match the school’s timetable. Many children have gotten into summer mode where they sleep in late and eat breakfast and lunch at odd hours. Waking up early to get ready for school on time can be a shock to everyone, so get ready for it before the first day. • Create a work station/space at home for your child where they can do their homework and study. This could be in the child’s bedroom or any other quiet place. • Hang a notice board in your child’s bedroom where you can place his or her artwork, notes to him/her, stars, appreciation cards from teachers, birthday invites etc. • Create a reading corner for you and your child for their daily reading time. • Create an email account under the name of your child. You can then send their weekly reports, scan weekly art and craft projects, book reading lists, certificates, awards, photos etc. They will then have these as mementos in the future. • Make a shopping list for each child under his or her name, for the items that are needed at the start of the school year. Get them to be involved – if the child can write, get them to write the shopping list with you. Things to include might be: • Uniform. There are several specialist uniform shops, including House of Uniforms and Zaks. • Shoes. Get ones that are hard-wearing, won’t scuff and are comfortable for wearing over long periods of time. Clarks is a favourite with many mums for buying good-quality school shoes. www.womanthismonth.com

• Lunch boxes and water bottles. Pottery Barn, Lakeland, Toys R Us, Carrefour, Géant, Lulu Hypermarket, Daiso and Virgin Megastore all sell good ranges. • School backpacks. Invest in a good-quality backpack that will last for the year. Toys R Us, Pottery Barn and Shoe City usually carry a good selection of backpacks and school bags. Stationery is available in most hypermarkets as well. Lulu Hypermarket usually carries a wide selection at very reasonable prices

LUNCHBOX IDEAS Coming up with daily ideas to provide a healthy and tempting lunchbox can be a challenge! Mums in Bahrain has the solution to help you

– look out for our brand new recipe book My Yummy Lunchbox – it will be sent home during September 2015 with children from a variety of schools, alternatively it will be available at many restaurants, cafés and children’s centres, as well as online. AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Once the school year is under way, so will be the various after-school activities and clubs that are available. To help you decide on the options for your child, here are some of the activities they may wish to participate in: art classes, dance, golf, gymnastics, soccer, swimming, tae kwondo and tennis.

BACK TO SCHOOL With kids heading back to the classroom after the summer break, this company introduces a new brand that will make them feel they have a friend in every shoe.

G

oing back to school is not only about new books, classes and stationery but also about making sure your youngsters have the right footwear to keep them comfortable and foothealthy all day long. Athlete’s Co proudly presents Unosole, offering the very latest in footwear technology including Coolite Memory Foam, for the ultimate in comfort, and Agion lining which boosts foot hygiene by eliminating unnecessary bacterial growth to keep bad odours at bay. Over the years the purchase of shoes has become just part and parcel of the back to school uniform-buying task. But it’s very important to remember that shoes are probably the most important part of your child’s outfit. The wrong footwear can lead to ankle and knee

66 September 2015

injuries, even in small children, which can have serious repercussions. Therefore, parents should seek out the right shoes at all times and you certainly won’t go wrong with Unosole. Athlete’s Co has a strong commitment to improving the lifestyle of its customers of all ages, which is why it has chosen to launch the Unosole brand just in time for kids going back to school. The range of smart and comfortable footwear, with special features designed to aid children in their growing and learning years, aims to be a friend to every child. The new academic year, which means new friends, new teachers and a whole lot of excitement, can be a stressful time for children and the idea of portraying shoes as a friend can help build their confidence and help them feel secure with the thought that “I already have a friend in my shoe”. On the technical side Unosole shoes do truly become a child’s friend by assisting with their welfare. Thanks to the Agion technology, they can say goodbye

to cheesy feet and the Coolite Memory Foam provides a soft but supportive foot bed to reduce injuries when playing and running. What more could you ask for from a friend? For parents too, Unosole is a friend with the Agion anti-bacterial lining meaning less likelihood of foot infections and reduced need for new shoes due to fungal growth. And since the whole range is black, the shoes not only look super smart, but they can be worn for any school, anywhere. Athlete’s Co really has hit the bulls-eye with the timing of this launch. Find Unosole at the company’s store at City Centre Bahrain. Call 16 686-216.

Bon Voyage While your children are little, you might think it sensible to put off any ambitious travel plans. But as Dr Jinan Harith Darwish tells us, it’s worth reconsidering. Follow her tips and don’t let your children, and the whole family, miss out on all the enriching learning opportunities. What must I take with me? A well-stocked, lightweight travel first aid kit is indispensable for travelling with kids. Include these items: • Over-the-counter pain medications: acetaminophen and ibuprofen. • Oral antihistamine medication. • Pedialyte powder packets for rehydration. • Polysporin or Neosporin one per cent hydrocortisone cream. • Anti-itch gel or cream. • Antibacterial hand wipes or alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60 per cent alcohol. • Sunscreen 50 SPF. Don’t forget any prescription medications (such as inhalers for asthma or insulin injections or Epi-pen) your child uses regularly that might be hard to find or refill overseas. How do I protect my child against mosquitoes? Pack the following: • Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, long pants and a hat. • Insect repellent containing up to 10 per cent DEET. • In malaria-risk areas, pack bed nets treated with permethrin if you are not sleeping in an air-conditioned or well-screened room. You can also buy permethrin or deltamethrin to treat bed nets and clothes

68 September 2015

overseas. Follow the directions to ensure safe use. What vaccinations does my child need? First and foremost make sure your child’s regular vaccinations are up-to-date. Then, talk to your paediatrician to learn what other vaccinations your child will require for your destination. Have your child get any necessary vaccinations at least six to eight weeks before travelling to ensure he has built up sufficient immunity. Travel vaccines that may be recommended depend on where you are going, what you plan to do while you are there, how long you are staying and the age of your child. Common vaccinations required for overseas travel include hepatitis A, typhoid, meningococcal, travellers’ diarrhoea and cholera. If you are travelling to an area with measles, make sure your

child gets the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. If you are travelling to an area where malaria is present, you and the rest of your family will need to take medication to prevent it. How can I alleviate my child’s discomfort during aeroplane pressurisation? To avoid ear aches from the change in air pressure during take-off and landing, offer your child something to eat or drink. Both pretend yawning and swallowing help ease the pressure and clear the ears by working the muscles that control the eustachian tubes. Can you do something about jet lag? There is no safe medication for children to help with jet lag. The best thing you can do is to switch over to the local time as soon as you arrive at your destination. Make sure your children are exposed to sunlight during the day, which helps the body acclimatise to the local time more quickly. It can take about two weeks to fully adjust to a new time zone. Do not skip regular bedtimes and naps just because you are on holiday. Try to stick to your ordinary sleep and nap schedule so your children stay rested. www.womanthismonth.com

Put your Best Foot Forward

We run on them to stay fit, we stand on them in serpentine queues and we squeeze them into pointy pumps. Your feet are the most pressured parts of your body, notes Behnaz Sanjana. After all, you’re on them all day, every day!

Y

our feet are a clever engineering marvel. They share over 50 bones between them; almost one quarter of all the bones in your body. Add to that 60 joints and a couple of hundred muscles, tendons and ligaments that help them function. Simply walking puts tonnes of force on our feet, making them undergo a lot of wear and tear over the course of our years. It’s a tough world for our tootsies, and they sure deserve some TLC (Tender, Loving and Care) every day, not just the occasional pedicure. Foot problems aren’t only cosmetic, like dry feet or yellow toenails. A lot of people suffer painful foot conditions but have little idea how to remedy them. Here are few of the most common foot afflictions: BUNIONS We assure you, a bunion is nowhere as cute as it sounds. Orthotist Ashish Yamba of the American Foot & Ankle Centre explains: “A bunion develops when the first bone of the foot turns outward and the big toe points

70 September 2015

inward (toward the other toes), causing the joint to jut out.” Bunions can be a genetic inheritance, depending on the shape and structure of the foot. “Low arches, flat feet and loose joints and tendons all increase the risk,” says Ashish. But before you blame your foot ‘type’, know this: a bunion is most likely to develop when susceptible feet are repeatedly squeezed into narrow, pointed-toe footwear. This explains why bunions torment more women than men. High heels can exacerbate the problem because they tip the body’s weight forward, forcing the toes into the front of the shoe. Ask Victoria Beckham; she suffered agonising bunions thanks to her absurdly high heels – not so posh after all! To treat bunions, Ashish says: “Firstly relieve the pressure by wearing the right kind of shoes with a wide, flexible sole to support the foot and enough room in the toe box. Go for sandals, athletic shoes or soft leather ones. Keep heels low – no higher than an inch – 2.54 centimetres. When the bunion is irritated and

painful, warm soaks, ice packs and aspirin or ibuprofen can help.” www.womanthismonth.com

Alternate your shoe choice through the day or from one day to the next. Wear more comfortable shoes for commuting to and from work. Stretch your calf muscles and feet daily CORNS AND CALLUSES Calluses typically develop near the base of the toes, where they are caused by friction from the inside of shoes. Some calluses are related to walking problems or foot abnormalities that place unusual stress on parts of the foot during walking. “A corn is a protective thickening of the skin on the top of the foot, usually on a bony, knobby portion of a toe. Corns often develop because of irritation caused by tight shoes. At the centre of a corn is often a dense knot of skin called a core, which is located over the area of greatest friction or pressure. Firm, dry corns that form on the upper surfaces of the toes are called hard corns. Pliable, moist corns that form between the toes are called soft corns,” Ashish says. Corns are painful and can get infected. His advice: wear shoes that fit well, with plenty of room around the toes (wide and deep toe boxes). This reduces the irritation that caused the problem in the first place. Over time, the corns or calluses will automatically shrink. “Soak the affected foot in warm water to soften the callus or corn. Dry the area. Then rub a pumice stone gently over the callus or corn. Afterward, moisturise the area with skin lotion. Repeat every day or every few days as needed,” Ashish advises. Customised footwear can help reduce friction and redistribute pressure from bunions, corns and calluses. www.womanthismonth.com

HELLISH HEELS No doubt, high heels can give your final look that oomph factor, but they can also burden your body with long-term issues like sciatica, chronic pain and damaged tendons. “When you walk in heels two inches or higher, the foot slides forward in your shoe, forcing the toes into an unnatural shape and redistributing your weight incorrectly. The increased weight on your toes causes your body to tilt forward. To compensate, you tend to lean backwards and overarch your back, creating a posture that can strain your knees, hips, and lower back,” Ashish points out. Heels of 1.5 inches with a wide base will spread the load more evenly. Wearing soft insoles reduces the impact on your knees. Besides making sure your shoes are the right size, pick a pair with a wide toe box to allow you to wiggle your toes. Save the stilettos for parties and make-orbreak meetings. Choose a more practical pair

of shoes the day you need to walk or stand for longer. “Alternate your shoe choice through the day or from one day to the next. Wear more comfortable shoes for commuting to and from work. Stretch your calf muscles and feet daily,” recommends Ashish. The compulsion to tower around in high heels for long hours could affect your ability to stand or step without wincing. Your feet are your foundation; if they feel miserable, so will your entire body. Small steps taken towards good foot health will prevent big foot problems later. g September 2015

AZURE HORIZON athed by four seas – Mediterranean to the south, Aegean to the west, Black Sea to the north and the Sea of Marmara between the European and Asian land masses – Turkey is blessed with a glorious coastline. Antalya on the southern coast is a must visit region. Make sure to reserve a day or two for Kaleiçi; its meandering streets just lead you to small surprises on every corner. Fantastic for walking, this place is a collection of historic buildings and its cobblestone alleys are full of vendors, coffee shops, romantic hotels, pubs and sea-side restaurants.

B

The western coast of the country attracts more tourists and can give any European beach town a run for its money. Izmir is one of the more popular destinations with its golden sands and multitude of entertainment options. Alaçati is a tiny village that revels in its Bohemian character. Lined with boutique shops, galleries and cafés, this enchanting space is indeed one of Turkey’s best kept secrets. A little further north, Bodrum attracts high -flying vacationers with its super yachts, luxury resorts and exciting party scene.

URBAN OASIS f there’s one place that encapsulates the spirit of the entire country and its people, then it’s Istanbul. Ankara is Turkey’s political capital but its financial, cultural and cosmopolitan hub is Istanbul, which is also its largest city. The mighty Bosphorus separates the city into its Asian and European parts. One of the most popular landmarks of the city is Hagia Sophia or the Blue Mosque. It’s a great place to start your

day trip as, with time, the queue to enter gets ever longer. Although there are cabs and buses available, the city is quite pedestrian friendly and after the mosque you can head to the Grand Bazaar or Basilica Cistern. There are a number of cafés in the area where you can take a break or even head to Taksim Square for some shopping or evening entertainment. A must-do activity is a cruise along the Bosphorus. If you didn’t get a chance to catch the whirling dervishes in Konya, you get plenty of opportunities to see them in Istanbul as well. A Bosphorus cruise paradise for foodies, make sure to try out the saucy burger, the city’s famous Kumpir or jacket potatoes, and endless array of grills, traditional Ottoman cuisine and, of course, some raki.

CHEF’S SPECIAL Savour the flavours of traditional Syrian mountain cuisine by preparing it in your own kitchen.

CHICKEN FAKHARA • • • • • • •

C

onsidered one of the finest Lebanese restaurants on the island, Rayés in Coral Bay boasts classic interiors and great culinary offerings. Overlooking the marina with Muharraq skyline in the distance, this restaurant serves some of the freshest seafood and time honoured regional dishes. You can dine al fresco while listening to the waves lapping the shoreline or sit inside and take in the restaurant’s lavish décor while listening to some Arabian music. Heading the operation in the kitchen is executive chef Gabi Deeb, who has been with the restaurant for over a decade now. His deep appreciation for Mediterranean cuisine developed at a young age, while growing up in Damascus, Syria, where he was exposed to a variety of foods and cooking styles. Access to great ingredients and being surrounded by rich preparations fuelled his long-time passion for cooking. He began his culinary career at the age of 20, working in Aleppo, one of the culinary centres of the Middle East, also famous for its special pepper. www.womanthismonth.com

At the age of 26, chef Gabbi moved to Bahrain and joined Seven Leisure as the executive chef of its outlets at Coral Bay. Chef Gabi’s Chicken and beef Fakhara From the misty mountains of A’ain es Shams in Syria, chef Gabbi introduces a unique village cooking technique to Bahrain for the very first time. Food cooked in clay pots made from Dubil ‘melh stone is a 400-year-old, oven-baked tradition which makes the dishes rich in taste and aroma. This technique has been passed down through generations in Syria’s beautiful northern region and is only performed by the locals. Chef Gabi has brought the original Dubil ‘melh stone pots all the way from the Syrian mountains to prepare the authentic Fakhara dishes. Enjoy the scrumptious chicken and beef Fakhara, exclusively available at Rayés. This stewlike preparation brings out the true flavours of the ingredients as they are cooked slowly for a long period of time.

The method for both dishes is the same and fairly simple. Combine all the ingredients in a pot; if you do not have the Dubil ‘melh stone pots, you can use regular earthenware. Cook in the oven for two hours for chicken and three hours for beef, at 170 degrees. Serve with hot steamed rice and enjoy a comforting meal full of flavour.

ALOSRA

A HEARTY LOAF Not many people associate the term ‘healthy’ with delicious, but this supermarket aims to change that with its new range of artisan breads.

A

losra supermarket has just expanded its bread offering and introduced a new range of artisan loaves which not only taste delicious but are made with all-natural ingredients. Some of the products to be found under the new artisan range include dark rye bread, rose and pistachio brioche, sourdough bread, Vienna loaf, banana bread and seed and nut bread. And there’s great news for health enthusiasts as there is also a host of gluten-free and vegan options available. “I think the health-conscious trend is taking over and people are starting to realise the benefits of eating healthy. Therefore the demand for gluten-free and vegan options in the market is growing,” explained Alosra food specialist, Sara Babar. “The options are currently limited in Bahrain. Although

there is a niche audience for such health foods and I anticipate such demand to grow substantially in the future.” The fresh and friendly supermarket wants to cater to this increasing demand and understands the need to encourage more people to eat healthily. “We want to especially counter the unhealthy and artificial options readily available in the marketplace,” adds Sara. The range of artisan breads is sold exclusively at Alosra, and is currently only available in the Saar (Najibi Centre) and Amwaj branches. The supermarket is working on ensuring the range will be available in all of its branches in the near future. Call 17 739-739 or visit www.alosraonline.com www.womanthismonth.com

Star

Gazing Raphael unveils what the stars have planned for us in September.

required of you, you will ride the storm without too much bother.

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20

You’ve got a lot to look forward to this month, especially since you’ve just come through a fairly rough ride recently. Most of your problems will now be behind you and this will enable you to focus on your plans and ambitions for the rest of 2015. Chief on the list for you could be the need to switch homes. You shouldn’t see this as a bad thing as a change of environment could have major benefits for you in the long term.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21

Virgo Aug 24 – Sept 23

Love is in the air this month and though it may take many shapes and forms, every outcome for your sign will be positive. Some of you will find new romance at work when a new colleague takes a shine to you and you soon realise the feeling is mutual. For those of you already involved, a relationship could be about to move up to the next level when you are approached about making a more serious commitment.

Times may be tough out there for many people but this month you are set to enjoy a fabulous return on a recent investment. Just remember to give a little to those closest to you, who supported and stood by you when times may have not been so good. On the health front, get those twinges in your lower back or thigh looked at sooner rather than later. The body rarely registers pain without a reason and this could be a wake-up call.

Libra Sept 24 – Oct 23

Gemini May 22 – Jun 21

Beware idle words said in the heat of the moment when you argue with colleagues over a difference of direction when it comes to the development of a business plan. You may find that wounds opened here may not be fixable if they cut too deeply. On the health front, another warning in the form of your weight. Watch that waistline and think about curbing any overeating, as this will quickly become a problem.

Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 22

Money, money and more money. September is the month that kicks off a very successful business venture and sees your finances prosper greatly. You may also find that several problems that have been dwelling on your mind of late will be resolved and you will spend the last months of the year in good spirits. However, you should beware of family disputes that arise from idle words or perhaps even a jealous heart.

Sagittarius Nov 23 – Dec 21

A recent loss in the family is really only starting to emotionally hit you now and it has triggered off a change in your inner-self. You may find yourself reflecting on life and thinking about the purpose you have in it and maybe even decide to make a career change. Any role in volunteer or social work might prove temporarily satisfying but the real need you have is for emotional fulfilment.

78 September 2015

Capricorn Dec 22 – Jan 20

What an interesting turn of events for you this month as the move into the period of Virgo will open up an opportunity to make your mark with a change of career that promises great potential for personal development. But to really make this work you have to be committed and want it for the right reasons. Don’t waste anyone’s time – including your own – by going into anything with a half-hearted approach.

Aquarius Jan 21 – Feb 19

This September could see your thoughts with a loved one who is far away from you but nevertheless on your mind more than ever. On a positive note, recent health concerns will be alleviated and you can begin to look ahead with more confidence as you are once again given a clean bill of health. Just take note of the second chance you have been presented with and make better use of it.

Pisces Feb 20 – Mar 20

You may be planning a trip away in September, perhaps to spend time with relatives abroad, but caution is advised if taking along small children. Watch the youngsters closely since a wandering infant may give you cause for concern. A rocky period at work could lie ahead and you are best to keep your head down and continue with your duties. As long as you perform all that is

A former partner is going to cause you a few financial worries as you head into September and you may be forced to seek legal advice if he or she does not adhere to their financial responsibilities. On the family front, responsibility for a planned birthday party may end up in your lap. On the work front, an interesting proposal on the 21st is worth considering. Just don’t take too long to decide.

Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 23

Your mood could be more melancholy than usual and this could have a lot to do with your dissatisfaction with things on the work front. Those of you in a current position may be finding it uninspiring and you should consider a change. If you are looking for a new job, you may be frustrated by the lack of opportunities. But don’t be surprised if an unplanned meeting on the 10th opens a career door you may never have considered going through before.

Leo Jul 24 – Aug 23

This month, you could see yourself hit a bit of a creative “brick wall”. In part this could have something to do with an awkward exchange you fell into recently with a loved one that has left you a little unsettled. To get yourself back on track, you need to put the matter to bed by dealing with it once and for all. The implications actually extend far further than you might realise. www.womanthismonth.com

showcase BAHRAIN SPECIALIST HOSPITAL

THE DANGERS OF JUNK FOOD Clinical dietician, Danah Quintana, on how a bad diet can adversely affect our health.

“J

unk food" has gone global. We see it everywhere – in grocery and convenience stores, fast-food restaurants, on television – usually looking very appealing. But what are the real effects of “junk foods” on our bodies? Junk food doesn't contain the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy. Therefore, you may feel chronically fatigued and lack the energy needed to complete daily tasks. Because fast food and junk food contain inadequate amounts of nutrients, your blood sugar levels will drop suddenly after eating, leaving you feeling grumpy, fatigued and craving sugar. Junk food contains large amounts of fats and, as fat accumulates in your body, you'll gain weight and could become obese. In the short term, high levels of dietary fat lead to poor cognitive performance. You'll feel tired and have trouble concentrating. The more weight you gain, the greater your risk of illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis.

Ferrari Ghabga

Danah Quintana

The high levels of fat and sodium in junk food and fast food can contribute to heart disease by raising blood cholesterol levels and

Euro Motors and Ferrari held a Ghabga at Ranin, Trader Vic’s.

contributing to arterial plaque buildup. High levels of trans-fatty acids found in many of these foods can lead to fatty liver deposits, which can cause liver disease. High levels of sugar and simple carbohydrates in junk food can lead to Type 2 Diabetes. Eating too much sugar puts your metabolism under stress; a lot of refined white sugar and simple carbohydrates force your body has to pump up insulin production to prevent a dangerous spike in blood sugar levels. Over time, this stress damages your body's ability to use the insulin secreted by your pancreases. In a “junk-filled” world it would be best to eat healthily by choosing fast food restaurants that offer healthier choices. Take products that are low in sugar, low in high-fructose corn syrup and low in milled grains and partially hydrogenated oil. Call BSH on 17 812-000.

last word

In Her Shoes

The head of business development and operations for Joz Beauty Division, Vinny Aseeja, tells us about her personality and preferences.

HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR COFFEE?

I love iced mocha with dark chocolate, no whip cream and preferably very strong.

WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE IF NOT YOURSELF? If I weren't my regular self, I would be a glamorous Hollywood star! Although I live a normal life now, I have that "it" factor that makes me stand out in a crowd.

THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR BODY?

I love everything about my body. Not that I am perfect, I think everyone should appreciate what they are. But I love my eyes. I have been blessed with eyes that convey emotions more than my words and actions ever could.

Vinny Aseeja

THE INGREDIENTS ON YOUR FAVOURITE PIZZA? Mexican flavours mixed with Italian techniques. The key ingredients are kidney beans, onion, clarified butter, mushrooms, spring onion, tomato and red and green chilli.

WHAT YOU DON’T MIND SPEDING YOUR MONEY ON?

The list is really long but I wouldn’t mind spending money on travelling and buying diamonds for my mother.

FAVOURITE FLOWER?

Orchids as they are perfect to be given to your loved ones.

ONE THING TO TAKE TO A DESERT ISLAND

IF YOU COULD TRAVEL IN TIME, WHERE WOULD YOU GO? Part of me would like to go back far enough to meet my father and my grandparents or great-grandparents. It would be fascinating to see what they were like.

FAVOURITE DISNEY PRINCESS? Jasmine.

A fully-charged cell phone, given a choice I wouldn’t mind a smart and willing companion.
