EDITOR’S NOTE

o, this month we’re all about luxury, a subject close to my heart. When we started researching this feature, I was thinking fabulous holidays, red-soled shoes, high-end shopping and off-thescale dining but, while it’s true all of these are indeed luxurious, your responses when asked for your definition of luxury were eyeopening – you can see them on our new Over To You page. The question also got me thinking about my own definition of luxury, and recent events have made me realise one of the greatest luxuries in life is good health. It’s something we’re passionate about here at Woman This Month which is why it’s the theme for our next Mum’s Meet-up. Yes, our social events resume in September, after a break for the summer, and we’re kicking off the new season with a yoga and breathing workshop with May Awadah. You’ll also find those details on Over To You and we’re thinking of changing the name to WTM Meet-ups since we’d love to see as many of you as possible there, not just mums. Our interviewees this month are two women who use their passions and skills to give back. Puja Tiwari chatted to artist Ramah Al Husseini whose work challenges cultural norms (I really want the blindfolded Saudi man picture). She not only creates beautiful pieces for sale but also works with Dream Society, Super-Hope and Ayadi putting her talent where her heart is. We also caught up with Anastasia Ageeva (not literally, the woman runs triathlons!) to hear how she’s supporting the RCSI’s initiative Child Life. You’ll notice a new look in our Wellbeing section and we’ve expanded the dining pages to include information from lots of our favourite venues, we’d love to hear what you think about all the developments over the last few months. As always, we’ve got the latest news from the worlds of fashion and beauty and lots more besides, take us with you to the beach or poolside and enjoy a great read.

What’s caught our eye in the news this month. Oympics Kenyan-born Ruth Jebet produced an astonishing piece of front running to win Bahrain's first Olympic gold when she claimed the women's 3000m steeplechase. Jebet timed an Asian record of 8min 59.75sec, missing out on the world record by less than a second. Reigning world champion Hyvin Kiyeng Jepkemoi of Kenya took silver in 9:07.12, with American Emma Coburn claiming bronze (9:07.63). "I'm happy to be a gold medallist, it was my first attempt to have a medal and I'm happy," said Jebet. AFP

The first of our new season of social events is also wellness-themed and this time it will be at a weekend, so everyone can attend. May Awadah of Art of Living will conduct a three-hour programme covering yoga, breathing techniques and meditation aimed at getting rid of accumulated stress. The event will take place at the Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa in Seef District and will be followed by complimentary healthy snacks at the stunning Japanese eatery Ruka. So, whether you’re a complete novice who’s always wanted to give yoga a go or a seasoned yoga veteran who’s interested in making new friends, make sure to put September 17, 3pm, in your diary and come along and join us. Please bring your own mat. If you’re planning to attend, we’d love to hear from you at wtm@womanthismonth.com.

It’s almost time for the weather to start cooling down, which means beach- and poolparty season is upon us. Now, of course we know that if you’ve got a beach and you’ve got a body, then you’ve got a beach body. But, in truth, how many of us wouldn’t feel better if we were a little fitter, and not just from an aesthetic point of view? To help with that goal, we’ve teamed up with Fitness First to give away two six-month memberships giving you access to the club’s massive cardio zone, exercise machines, supporting audio and visual entertainment, an extensive free weights area and many group exercises each week. To enter, you’ll need to head over to our social media platforms and follow the instructions.

SEPTEMBER IN FOCUS What’s on our radar this month?

Lunch Love

In Love With Fashion

We popped along to the opening of the new BAM, which stands for Baguettes and More, in Juffair and were happy to discover it’s much more than just a sandwich shop! The menu includes freshly-baked white or brown baguettes, delicious tortilla wraps, healthy salads or melt-in-your-mouth jacket potatoes alongside an extensive range of drinks too with high quality coffee and speciality teas, decadent frappes and healthy smoothies. Just round the corner from our office and super tasty – a new favourite lunch venue is born.

One of the island’s favourite stores, and the Middle East’s largest high-street fashion retailer, is bringing in the big guns to get its brand message across. Splash has signed up Bollywood big names Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif as brand ambassadors. Living up to its brand philosophy of ‘In Love with Fashion’, Splash is well known for its trendy and fashionable collections with a broad appeal. The superstar pair will be featured in various campaigns across the region and, who knows, we may even get a visit.

A Touch of Silk

International luxury brand, Amouage, has extended its product portfolio with the launch of a new collection of silk printed scarves in Bahrain. The beautiful, bespoke pieces have been designed in-house by the creative director Christopher Chong and crafted by one of the finest silk manufacturers and printers in Como, Italy, the home of the finest quality silk weaving and printing in the world. Amouage CEO David Crickmore says: “We have been working on the collection for over a year and to see it come to fruition is really exciting. We also intend to develop woven scarves and we have very high hopes that this launch will be the beginning of an entirely new category of business for us.”

Bridget’s Back

It’s another one of those film releases we’ve all been waiting for. Bridget Jones’s Baby sees our heroine back to singleton status, having broken up with Mark Darcy. Throwing herself into work; for once, Bridget has everything under control until she meets dashing American Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey). In an unlikely twist, Bridget finds herself pregnant, but with one hitch, she’s not sure which one is the father. McDreamy on the big screen, be still our beating hearts.

Grand Grapes We all know the island is well served with the best ladies’ nights around, but what if you want to take along your significant other. The latest offering at Rasoi, the Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa’s Indian eatery, offers a free bottle of grape chosen by the sommelier when you book a weekday dinner for two adults or more. Yum, yum pass the papadums.

Head For Hawar

The long awaited relaunch of the Hawar Islands resort takes place this month, with bookings available from September 9, over the Eid break. Billing itself as ‘Your true nature retreat’ it seems management are keen to capitalise on the islands’ reputation as a wildlife haven which has a huge population of native and migratory birds as well as endangered oryx and ibex. Boat tours out into the local waters offer the chance to see dolphins and dugong too. We’re packing our bucket and spade.

P

UMA has released the latest edition to its DISC footwear franchise, the futuristic looking metallic silver BMW X-CAT DISC. Designworks, a BMW Group subsidiary, teamed with PUMA to develop the special fabric applied over the metal chassis. Through this collaboration, Designworks led the creative process for the shoe, which has been inspired by the striking concept car. This shoe showcases PUMA’s reinvented DISC technology, which provides ultimate comfort and a snug fit, its makers say. The starting points for this project were the flexible, ergonomic and lightweight GINA material as well as PUMA’s reinvented, lighter and fasterworking DISC technology. Instead of using laces, this system works with a rotating disc that pulls internal wires to close and open the shoe. Using only one thin layer of super-light GINA

20

material, the shoe wraps around the foot like a second skin. “With the X-CAT project, we wanted to unleash the innovative power of BMW and PUMA. We have transformed the essence of the shape-shifting GINA car into a streamlined and elegant shoe,” says Torsten Hochstetter, global creative director at PUMA. The X-CAT DISC combines

lightweight design, adaptability and performance to create something special. In the spirit of GINA, the designers treated the foot as a kind of chassis and re-engineered the original automotive material to ensure it was breathable and sufficiently durable. Automotive design is immediately evident in the proportions that make the material shine – and in

the simplicity that prevents it from competing with too many other design features. Fine, laser-cut perforations flow across the front of the X-CAT, underlining the impression of motion while adding ventilation. Another design cue taken from the original GINA concept is the functional aesthetic of revealing the underlying structure when tightening the shoe. The designers also re-thought the concept for the sole and the PUMA DISC, applying BMW engineering approaches to add greater precision. They viewed the sole as the engine of the foot, the driver of movement. This produced a unique design, which was inspired by interconnecting gears and integrates both engineered flexibility and interlinked stability. The BMW X-CAT DISC is now available in selected PUMA stores across the world. Call 17 750-750. www.womanthismonth.com

MODERN-DAY HEROES

The designer Christian Louboutin, known for his desirable red-soled shoes, teamed up with the French E-concept store SportyHenri.com to support the Cuban national delegation at the 2016 Olympic Games in providing its nonperformance outfit. The clothes were created to be worn during formal occasions, in particular the closing ceremony. Cuban heritage and the athletes themselves were the source of inspiration and guidance to create the uniform visuals.

The Italian luxury fashion house, Salvatore Ferragamo, unveils its autumn and winter 2016-17 advertising campaign. The concept celebrates its Italianess, revelling in the splendour of life. The new collection mixes playfulness with the timeless values of its founder; the dedication of his life to the pursuit of luxury living. The campaign imagery was shot by photographer Craig McDean, who captured the spirit of a global traveller in his or her moment of leisure to showcase the elegant collection.

EVERYDAY BAG

Mulberry has introduced a new tote to its already wide collection of handbags. ‘The Maple’ was created by the brand’s new creative designer, Johnny Coca. It features an open shopper-style top and its leather reinforced structure is made to carry heavy items such as laptops and magazines. The bag also has an external, detached pocket, to keep small essentials together. “A well-made tote that can be easily accessed and carry all the things you need day-to-day. The size was deliberately specified to fit A4 documents and laptops. The front pocket detaches and becomes a chic pouch for running out quickly for your morning coffee,” says Johnny.

TO BE, OR NOT TO BE Every year in a limited edition collection distributed worldwide since 1992, the Montblanc Writers Edition pays tribute to the greatest icons of literary history. This time, Montblanc is celebrating the 400th anniversary of the English playwright and poet, William Shakespeare. The design of the Writers Edition William Shakespeare is inspired by his plays, ranging from dark tragedies to light comedies. The black, red and white resin combinations recall the colours of the flags that were raised above his theatre – black for tragedies, red for historical dramas and white for comedies. The pieces are limited to 1597, in reference to the year his most important play, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet was first published.

The sports brand PUMA collaborates, for the first time, with the Dutch graphic designer Caroll Lynn aka Careaux for its autumn and winter 2016-17 collection. She is recognised globally for her 'girls meet street' style and digital artwork inspired by sneakers. The line brings colourful and optimistic motifs in feminine and romantic illustrations. She added her touch to classic PUMA footwear such as ‘The Suede’ and apparel pieces like bomber jackets and leggings. The result is a marriage between romance and sport.

The cut and style can be a bit rough and ‘bad boy’ inspired, but if you go for light blue or pale pink, you might consider creating a romantic look. Summer is the perfect season to enjoy the outdoors (when you don’t live in the Middle East, but we certainly do know how to adapt any style) and music festivals are much anticipated happenings. Light-weight dresses paired with leather jackets are almost a uniform for concert-goers. Follow our tips and embrace this style for a touch of island fun. This could be the perfect outfit for a dinner date or a girls’ night out.

The duo of skinny jeans and leather jacket couldn’t be left out of this fashion edit; however, don’t make it obvious! Opt for an embellished jacket to impress with boldness and creativity. The studs reinforce the rebellious, over-the-top style, so go easy with the accessories. A straightforward shoulder bag and T-shirt are the best complements. For footwear, wow your friends and family by choosing a powerful black stiletto.

showcase JEEVES

CLEAN AND GREEN This esteemed garment care company looks after your clothes and the Earth by using an environmentally-friendly dry cleaning process.

W

orking towards a cleaner and greener environment, London-based Jeeves of Belgravia is using an exclusive dry-cleaning process which is non-toxic to the planet. GreenEarth Cleaning uses liquid silicone, which does not dirty the air, contaminate the soil or pollute the water. Dry-cleaning is a good option for tailored jackets, trousers, dresses and other speciality fabrics as it will not cause the distortion of the fibre often seen as shrinkage during wet washing. The traditional process relies on the use of petrochemicals as the medium to carry detergents and specific additives for the breaking up and suspension of stains. These include perchloroethylene or hydrocarbon, which are petroleum-based solvents. It is classified as a contaminant and likely carcinogen, and is carefully regulated, both in how it’s used and how it’s disposed of. GreenEarth Cleaning utilises an environmentally non-toxic silicone and non-ionic detergent chemistry that is the gentlest way to clean any fine garment. Unlike harsh petrochemical solvents used in other drycleaning processes, GreenEarth’s components can be disposed of safely and simply return to their natural elements of sand, trace amounts of water and carbon dioxide. The process is also less abrasive and gentler on clothes, proven to help protect against wear, shrinkage and colour fade. It’s perfect for cashmere, embellishments, suede and leather garments. It also is very light in weight and has a very low surface tension, allowing it to gently penetrate fabric fibres

and rinse away dirt in a way that water cannot. Many garment technologists employed by the major retail clothing brands recommend GreenEarth versus traditional dry-cleaning for the care of their products. Furthermore, Jeeves is committed to minimising the production of waste through recovery, recycling and reducing the amount of waste that is sent to landfill. Liquid silicone is made from

the same natural sand the earth has been creating for over six billion years, and is also used as a base in various shampoos and lotions. Its unique, chemically inert properties remove stains from fabric without touching the material. The Dry Cleaning and Laundry Institute confirms that GreenEarth cleans as well as the industry standard detergents with no environmental concerns. In addition, the same tests show that with GreenEarth, you can clean a

wider variety of speciality fabrics and trims. Jeeves is ensuring that there is no air, ground or water contamination, as is unfortunately a by-product of the other drycleaning systems available. Jeeves has outlets in Hamala and Riffa Views and will soon open a new branch in El Mercado Mall, Janabiyah and Zinj, near Akbari. New customers can enjoy a 20 per cent discount on the services. When Art Meets Emotion This gifted artist spoke to Puja Tiwari about her unique, sentiment-inspired work as well as the growing creative community in Bahrain.

W

hen WTM went to meet artist Ramah Al Husseini, she was busy prepping for an imminent exhibition, with one of her works depicting a caricature of a jolly Saudi man appearing to be chattering on his phone with a floral blindfold on. “Growing up in Saudi, I saw how widespread it was for women to cover up, mostly to keep men’s thoughts pure. “This piece challenges that norm in a playful manner and portrays a man being blindfolded for a change, so they don’t have to witness anything to taint their notions,” says Ramah. As a child, she could be found at the back of the classroom, busy doodling away on anything and everything in front of her. Art has always been her forte, a space in which she could freely express her emotions and escape into a world of endless possibilities. The Saudi national with Palestinian origins also drew inspiration from her mother, a seasoned painter. This talent evolved into a passion, and Ramah went on to graduate with a degree in fine arts from the University of Concordia, Canada. “My work is best described as modern contemporary, with an Arabic influence. It can sometimes be minimalistic, but that depends on my mood and how I feel about the subject matter,” she explains. Her art truly takes form when she has an emotion attached to it. “I only paint about things I’m

40

September 2016

Originally hailing from Palestine, but never having set foot there, I researched the culture and learned of their folk songs, traditions and dance. really passionate about, and if I have no personal feeling to what I’m painting, the result will usually come out terrible!” But she adds that emotions can be built from research. A classic example of this is her recent collaboration in an exhibition with a Japanese theme. “I delved into some information about the culture before beginning the collection, and then painted about elements that I loved and was intrigued by. I melded them with other elements from my own culture and created unique pieces with interesting stories.” Having found it difficult to work as an artist in Canada, she returned to the region and has since been a part of many exhibitions. She’s been involved with making recycled art for CocaCola, with proceeds going to the Dream Society, a charity that makes dreams come true for terminally ill children. She’s also created T-shirt and bag designs for Super-Hope, which helps children battling diseases such as cancer to develop a positive mental

attitude, and has painted shoes for Ayadi relief, a Bahraini youthled relief organisation. “I do as much as I can to give back to the community and that is usually with a paintbrush or pencil,” she says. Asked to choose a favourite among her own works, Ramah’s eyes take on a glimmer as she explains: “One that lies close to my heart is from a solo, Palestinianthemed exhibition titled ‘come and have a taste’, from 2012. “Originally hailing from Palestine, but never having set foot there, I researched the culture and learned of their folk songs, traditions and dance.” The image is of a group of women sitting together, central from one end of the canvas to the other, hoping to create a neverending line, clapping, singing and drumming to traditional folk songs that speak of freedom, peace and hope. Traditionally inspired shuttered windows run vertically beside a line of olive trees - denoting hope and growth, as well as the possibility of opportunity. “This painting tugs at my heart

strings because it goes to show that even after all the pain and struggle, they still choose to sing together and hope for better,” says Ramah. She is part of the growing subculture of talented artists gaining momentum in the art scene and says: “A lot of artists and creatives have emerged; now it's just a matter of time for the general public to take note and begin to truly appreciate art. “Hopefully they start investing, not just purchasing, and offer more creative jobs while appreciating the effort and flair that is put into each created piece.” As advice to aspiring artists, Ramah encourages them to never give up, even if people don’t like their work. “As long as you take yourself seriously and commit to your work and passion, the rest will fall into place. Confidence is the key element,” she says. Looking to the future, she will be curating a solo exhibition in a few months. She also hopes to do an artist residency anywhere in the world, and is currently trying to build her skills with digital art. “Basically, I just want to keep doing what I do, what I love, and hope to advance in it,” she says. You can see some of her work at an upcoming exhibition on August 27 at Malja, or view her Instagram page: @alhusseiniramah www.womanthismonth.com

TRI FOR LIFE

Following dual passions sees this real estate professional attracting investors to the island at the same time as helping save lives.

Anastasia Ageeva

H

aving learned about real estate from her mother, Anastasia Ageeva has been in the business for more than 12 years. She heard about the Kingdom’s developing market and decided to pursue both her love of travel and a dream of living by the sea in the sunshine. She’s now been specialising in the Amwaj area for more than seven years and has seen many changes. She says: “It’s a unique experience to see an area grow and develop before your eyes, and I have a special love for our islands, being a true Amwaji.” Dealing in all manner of properties, from luxury villas to studio apartments, she looks after both sales and rentals as well as project management. And she is so enthusiastic about the waterside development, the Russian national is promoting it as an investment destination to her fellow countrymen. She says: “I’m encouraging Russian investors to the Bahrain real estate market. I was fortunate to be part of a government delegation from Bahrain on a visit to St Petersburg, Russia [her home city] and we hosted a return visit of an official Russian government delegation to Bahrain in April. “My goal is to show my countrymen the economic strength of investing in Bahrain and promoting this island’s lifestyle, being one of the top-ranking countries worldwide for expatriates to live and conduct business.

42

September 2016

Naturally we will be looking at Amwaj Islands properties foremost! “Amwaj is a unique paradise on Earth where all nationalities are united under the warmth of the sun in Bahrain and can enjoy the beach and the turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf – everyone is equal and happy! That’s very special, isn’t it?” And when she is not busy helping people find their perfect homes, Anastasia can be found pounding the streets pursuing her other passion - triathlon. This sometime model is not afraid to get sweaty as she runs, swims and bikes. She explains: “I am a passionate long-distance triathlete – swim, bike, run – repeat – and enjoy

my daily training on Amwaj Islands.” She even has her own Facebook page dedicated to sport and healthy living at https:// www.facebook.com/bahrainsportsmarketing. Asked what motivates her, the immediate response is: “Child life! If I save one, I win. My supporters and I donate to: http:// operationchildlife.com/ “The doctors from RCSI travelling to underdeveloped countries are my good friends. Countries like Tanzania, Vietnam and the like don’t have developed healthcare and the mission of Operation Childlife is to deliver professional healthcare available in European countries like Ireland free of charge and to operate on children who need help. They don’t get paid for doing this, in fact they pay for their own travel to save lives. So I am helping with donations which buy them a ticket to travel and save a child’s life. Every small contribution matters.” For the future Anastasia plans to combine two more of her passions – beauty and growing orchids. She says: “I will find the most exquisite property in a prime location and create my spa, of course! I love beauty and wellbeing and introducing people to the idea. Naturally, I’ll have an orchid garden around it for sure!” To contact Anastasia for marketing/selling/ renting your property please email your information to anastasia.ageeva@gmail.com. g www.womanthismonth.com

The Luxe List

RETAIL THERAPY

We love fancy shoes and high-end labels, which is exactly what you get when you head to Al Aali Shopping Complex. Favourites here include internationals such as Moschino and various options on Armani, from jeans to juniors, alongside the home-grown design team of Noon by Noor, whose refined aesthetic fuses understated luxury with a playful femininity with the emphasis on sharp tailoring, clean silhouettes and attention to detail. Here too you’ll find Trousseau which has truly sumptuous bed linens and an absolutely gorgeous selection of gifts (which you might just want to keep for yourself). If you’re looking for an even greater selection of designer goodies, Moda Mall is the place to go – it even bills itself as ‘Bahrain’s Luxury Shopping Destination’. The aisles are hushed and the shops often appear empty but, we’re reliably informed, the island’s great and good pay many a private visit to the likes of Emilio Pucci at J Boutique, Gucci, Hermes and more. If you’re connected, the staff will, apparently, even come to your home – shopping, without the shop, now that really would be luxury indeed!

44

September 2016

Noon by Noor

This month we’re all about luxury. What do you think of when you hear the word luxury? Fast cars and private yachts? Louboutin shoes, pampering at the spa with diamonds dripping from your wrists, or maybe the finest of fine-dining. Well, whatever it is, our little island certainly knows how to do the luxe lifestyle. Read on for ideas on indulgence.

THE CAR’S THE STAR

From wedding cars to racers, vehicles certainly make a huge style statement. A few obvious names spring to mind when we think of luxury motors – Rolls-Royce, Maserati, Bentley and, of course, James Bond’s much-loved Aston Martin. But, in this part of the world, it seems it’s all about the Bahrain-backed McLaren Automotive. The handcrafted sports car manufacturer has seen sales across its regional network up by 70 per cent in the first half of 2016 and that’s with a price tag of USD187,000!

www.womanthismonth.com

SAILS IN THE SUNSET

On an island surrounded by water, it’s surprising how few of us ever actually set foot on board a boat. But it’s also one of the top fantasies whenever people are asked their idea of luxury. And surprisingly, it doesn’t have to be that expensive. Biss Marine at Amwaj Marina has an impressive array of yachts which can be hired for anything from a couple of hours to a full day for fishing, cruising or visiting the surrounding islands. Dig out that Pucci bikini and channel your inner film star. And if you really do want to go for the luxury travel option, check out privatefly.com, which charters private jets out of both Bahrain International Airport and Shaikh Isa Airbase Airport.

TIME ON YOUR HANDS

Many people cite time itself as a luxury, and what better way to express that than with a gorgeous timepiece? If the world’s most expensive watch, the Breguet Grande Complication Marie Antoinette, (pictured) is out of your price range, at its current valuation of around USD30 million, never fear, there are numerous beautiful, but slightly more affordable, items being released every year from the world’s top watchmakers. Check out Asia Jewellers for a great selection such as Panerai and Raymond Weil.

www.womanthismonth.com

ALL THAT GLITTERS

It wouldn’t be luxury if we didn’t mention jewellery and there are plenty of options. Moda Mall alone has almost 60 brands represented from the giants of De Beers and Tiffany, to local companies such as Kooheji Jewellery, a family owned and run business that is very much on a personal footing with both its international designers and customers. The Gold Souq might not sound particularly glamorous but figures show that in times of uncertainty, such as the world is currently witnessing with the UK leaving the European Union, the impending election in the USA and the much weakened oil price, gold is seen as a reliable investment. Its price has rallied this year and experts expect more of the same so, it’s not just pretty, it’s also a good investment. Some would say having a piece of jewellery custom made is the height of luxury. If you’re one of them, check out Harmony Jewellers in the Gold Souq where Hussain turns his hand to creating some really beautiful pieces. Of course, if you’re shopping for jewellery in Bahrain, you cannot ignore the island’s history as a pearl diving nation. Bahrain, in fact, bans the import of cultured pearls in a bid to preserve this heritage. To own BAHRAIN BEAUTY a Bahraini pearl is really something “The allure of the pearl has quite special, particularly if you have captivated the Queen of Sheba, Elizabeth I and Catherine the Great, dived for it yourself, which it’s possible all of whom are said to have worn Bahraini pearls. Their fabulous to do from both Al Dar Islands and lustre is to do with the combination of the sea's freshwater springs Amwaj Marina. Don’t fancy getting that give the island Kingdom its name – Bahrain means ‘two seas’ in your toes wet? Mattar Jewelers, in Arabic – and its warm, shallow, highly saline water. Whatever rare Al Ali Shopping Complex, has been alchemy creates these lustrous objects, then as now Bahraini pearls dealing in high-quality Bahraini pearls are widely believed to be the best in the world.” for more than 150 years. Katherine Bergen writing in the Wall Street Journal in 2010.

DINING

Bahrain now has more restaurants helmed by Michelinstarred chefs than ever before. Choose Indian at Rasoi by Vineet at the Gulf Hotel; Italian with a menu from Oliver Glowig at Primavera at the Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain; or head to the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay for three concepts from celebrity favourite Wolfgang Puck – Cut, re-Asian and Blue Moon Lounge. However, Bahrain also has its fair share of

homegrown favourites such as Masso, by chef Susy Massetti, where you’re likely to find yourself rubbing shoulders with the VIP crowd, and Maki, a regional favourite that’s recently expanded onto the London market. And if you fancy good old-fashioned comfort food, but still want to impress someone, check out the Wow burger at Plums at the Ritz (right) – it’s Wagyu beef topped with fois gras and is apparently the island’s most expensive patty!

HEAVEN AT YOUR FEET

A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND?

“Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world.” – Marilyn Monroe Shoes, of course, deserve their own very distinct mention. Where would we be without them? Apart from barefoot, we’d also be bereft of Carrie Bradshaw’s obsession and the accompanying humour – “Please sir, you can take my Fendi baguette, you can take my ring and watch but you can’t take my Manolo Blahniks.” We would have missed Naomi Campbell tumbling on the catwalk in a pair of Vivienne Westwood five-inch platforms. The joy would be leeched from window shopping and the world would be an altogether darker place. Even Hanibal Lecter recognised the importance of good shoes – “You know what you look like to me, with your good bag and your cheap shoes? You look like a rube. A well-scrubbed, hustling rube with a little taste.” So perhaps shoes should not be considered a luxury. But, we all know there’s shoes and shoes. There are those we wear to work each

46

September 2016

This whopping 80-carat engagement ring popped up online recently prompting mixed reactions. Some raved over its size, beauty and clarity. But at an estimated price of USD15 million and almost the size of a woman’s finger, more pragmatic observers asked whether anyone would actually wear it. What do you think, let us know at editor@ womanthismonth.com.

day, perfectly serviceable and probably rather smart. And then there are those we merely visit and dream over. We know they will be uncomfortable because Christian Louboutin himself told us so – “I would hate for someone to look at my shoes and say, ‘Oh my God! They look so comfortable'.” And yet, should the opportunity arise, we would snap them up in a heartbeat – Manolos (left), Choos, Loubs, Kirkwoods and Rossis – we love them all and, in this case, a little luxury is surely a very good thing.

The Scent of Success Nothing says luxury like a glittering bottle emitting a delicious aroma. For those of us who didn’t grow up with a silver spoon, a designer perfume was probably the first step on the path to luxe living and while the classics still hold a special place in our hearts, there’s something very special about the first spray from a new bottle of perfume. We’ve rounded up a few of the new offerings due in the shops this autumn. MARC JACOBS DECADENCE

MODERN MUSE NUIT

According to the makers “Decadence is the ultimate invitation to indulge. The woody fragrance makes a bold statement and elevates any woman to a new level of luxury with every spray.” Developed with master perfumer Annie Buzantian, Decadence is a luxurious sensual woody scent. The fragrance captivates with a sultry top of succulent Italian plum, golden saffron and velvety iris. The heart is a bouquet of rich Bulgarian rose that mingles with lush orris and creamy nuances of jasmine Sambac. Sexy liquid amber, heady vetiver and warm papyrus woods dry down to a signature of sophisticated indulgence.

The new fragrance from Estée Lauder, Modern Muse Nuit, is drenched in glamour, much like the brand’s own Muse Kendall Jenner (above). Delivering the olfactive embodiment of glamour, mystery and compelling sensuality, the innovative “dual-impression” structure allows women to experience the fragrance through two contrasting accords: hypnotic florals – featuring exotic mandarin, bourgeon de cassis, blue chamomile, the velvet richness of jasmine absolute, jasmine sambac China and creamy heliotrope; and addictive woods – in which smooth sandalwood meets the clarity of Clearwood, a cutting-edge material capturing the pure rendition of patchouli’s polished warmth. There’s also the richness of Tonka beans and prized Madagascar vanilla balanced with soft musks and the warm glow of amber.

CALVIN KLEIN EUPHORIA Provocative, sexy and sensual, euphoria is an addictive Oriental fragrance inspired by the feelings that define a dream-like state. The top notes open with an exhilarating blend of pomegranate and lush green accord, and the heart becomes mythical and exotic as dewy lotus blossom and black orchid descend into the skin. The drydown is truly mysterious and feminine with lasting hints of sensual amber and creamy accord. Designed by Fabien Baron, the bottle is sleek and polished with curved contours and luxurious textures.

48

September 2016

ONE OF A KIND It’s not always about the price of the perfume, back in 2011 DKNY created the Golden Delicious Million Dollar Fragrance Bottle in collaboration with celebrity jewellery designer Martin Katz. Priced at USD1 million, the bottle, which housed the brand’s Golden Delicious scent, featured the New York skyline crafted in diamonds on yellow and white gold embedded with 183 yellow sapphires. Other stones included yellow, pink and white diamonds, a three carat ruby and a seven carat Sri Lankan Cabochon sapphire. These gems were all hand placed and the bottle took almost 1,500 hours to complete. Sounds like crazy indulgence right? But hold on, the bottle was sent on a world tour and then put up for auction with proceeds going to global charity Action Against Hunger.

MIU MIU Miuccia Prada is a master of the counterintuitive. She mixes the common and the ultra-refined to create something surprising and knowing, yet never contrived. Drawing on Prada’s inspiration, perfumer Daniela Andrier creates a study in contrast. She starts with an elegant, sensual floral, lily of the valley, composed of real jasmine, real rose absolute and synthetic green notes. The soft, fresh, ingénue scent is set against a deep earth-toned background: the wood and pepper of Akigalawood, an extract of patchouli, which adds a brooding mystery to the subtle sparkle of the floral. Like the fragrance itself, the Miu Miu bottle is a contradiction in terms. The sensual, soft blue-pillowed opaque glass – reminiscent of Miu Miu’s signature matelassé – with white matte collar is simultaneously traditional and pop. The translucent red disk gives a playful, graphic, outré quality.

PERFORMANCE MEETS LUXURY This model has been revamped for success and delivers a classy combination of state-of-the-art technology and refined dynamics.

T

he Porsche Panamera is more than just a car; it’s a reflection of the driver’s impeccable taste and elegance. Whether you’re running errands or on your way to a business meeting, this model ensures you get there on time and in style. It has been systematically improved and boasts notable changes to the engines, transmission, chassis and interior design. There are newly-implemented features such as rear axle steering, active roll compensation and three-chamber air suspension. The result? A car that delivers an unforgettable drive. At first glance, this is unmistakably a Panamera, with recognisable aesthetics such as pronounced shoulders, athletic flanks and an extremely fast roof line that is 20mm lower at the rear. This creates a stylistic link to Porsche’s design icon, the 911. The new model’s interior is a sight for sore eyes with black panel surfaces and interactive displays that combine to present an intuitive user interface similar to a smartphone. Classic hard keys and conventional instruments have been replaced with touchsensitive panels and individually configurable displays, which take centre stage in the cockpit. Despite having an extended range of communication, convenience and assistance systems, operation of the new functions is now easier than ever. Although the cabin transforms the analogue world into the digital present, there are still traditional elements such as the centrally positioned tachometer in

50

the instrument cluster – a tribute to the 1955 Porsche 356 A. All second generation Panamera engines have been redesigned to deliver more power, while significantly improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. The Panamera Turbo and Panamera 4S now feature new Bi-Turbo direct injection engines. Both models can be equipped with a permanent all-wheel-drive system and a new eight-speed Porsche dual-clutch transmission. The Panamera Turbo is powered by a V8 engine that delivers 550bhp, while a V6

440bhp variant drives the Panamera 4S. The Panamera is equipped with a range of standard and optional assistance systems, which make life while driving more convenient as well as safer. Night Vision Assistant is a new feature, which uses a thermal imaging camera to detect people and large animals by displaying a coloured, highlighted warning indicator in the cockpit. If the new LED Matrix

Headlights (with 84 image points) are selected, people beyond the visual range of the dipped beam headlight are also illuminated briefly, should they be in the computed driving corridor, enabling the driver to avoid critical situations in advance. Another new addition is the optional Porsche InnoDrive, which includes adaptive cruise control. Based on navigation data and signals from radar and video sensors, it computes and activates the optimal acceleration and deceleration rates, as well as gear selections and coasting phases, for the next 3km. In doing so, this electronic co-pilot automatically takes bends, inclines and speed limits into account. The Panamera has only grown six millimetres in width, but it feels like several centimetres, an effect created by features such as the A-shaped air intake, which extends out to the sides and creates a completely new front-end design, its makers say. In addition, the Porsche Panamera offers the best layout variability of any model in the luxury class, making it practical for everyday use with a 40:20:40 split of the folding rear bench backrests. Adding to the appeal are new equipment options such as the panoramic tilt roof, massage seats, ambient lighting and a 3D high-end sound system from Burmester. The new Porsche Panamera range is available for order now. First deliveries in Bahrain can be expected to take place in January 2017. First off, I have to say, this spa has to be one of the fanciest I’ve ever been in. It’s all space and light with great views and worth a visit even if just for a manicure, as the atmosphere is pure blissful relaxation. I went to try the newly-launched Jet Lag Recovery programme which aims to ‘restore the body’s natural biorhythms and deeply relax the nervous system’. The first stage involved a gentle pearl and jasmine body scrub to renew energy. At 50 minutes, this part was a little too long for me, but the therapist’s touch was gentle and soothing and the scrub itself smells wonderful. Next came the application of amethyst gel spread over the scrub. While wrapped in warm towels, I was given a mini facial using garnet scrub followed by a mud mask and facial massage. I must admit I was slightly concerned as my sensitive skin often does not take well to scrubs, however, I need not have worried, my face was left looking and feeling soft and glowing. I then stepped into a warm aromatic shower to rinse off the body scrub and gel and came out to, perhaps, my favourite part; a gentle all over application of jade body cream. Without the

pressure of a massage but still firm enough to ensure absorption of the product, this seals in the goodness of the scrub and gel and leaves the skin feeling amazing. The final stage was the application of day cream to my face before I was led to the relaxation area to chill with a cup of delicious lemon and ginger infusion. I didn’t have jet lag to start with but I can imagine, if you did, this treatment and these surroundings would be the perfect tonic.

Sheer Bliss Behnaz Sanjana sampled the Heavenly Spa at the Westin Bahrain City Centre and cannot help reminiscing about her fantastic experience. When the amiable Emily ushered me in to the tranquil confines of the venue, I was expecting a relaxed two hours, away from the business of a usual weekday. Little did I know that the Turkish Hammam and Swedish massage I had signed up for would turn out to be the most pampering and indulgent experience I’ve had in a long time. After a 10-minute soak in 38°C of water, I entered the steamy, marble interior of the Hammam. Contrary to what I expected, it was not so hot as to cause even the slightest discomfort. Emily guided me to the large central marble slab and proceeded to put a seemingly benign white mitt to work on my prostate body. The thorough scrub-down rid me of all accumulated grime and dead skin, leaving me squeaky clean. The next step was the fun part; something I have never seen before. Emily held a cloth bag soaked in suds over my body, and in one swift action, she let

huge bubbles of soap rain all over me. The tingle of the lemon scented ‘bubble wrap’ evoked in me a child-like glee. Washing the suds away, she treated me to a rich body masque to seal in the moisture and quench any dehydrated skin. Once outside the Hammam, I had to gather myself to dip into the 12°C water. There, pores closed!

A warm cup of ginger tea later, I headed for what had to be one of the best massages I have ever taken. Emily’s hands were intent on soothing my muscles, and comforted me into a meditative lull. I emerged from the massage room fresh as a daisy and left the Westin Bahrain City Centre’s Heavenly Spa feeling…well, heavenly.

ure Gold Collagen targets the visible signs of ageing linked to collagen loss and is formulated to nourish the skin from inside out and strengthen nails and hair. Formulated with 11 active ingredients including hydrolysed collagen, vitamin C, biotin and hyaluronic acid, this revolutionary beauty supplement was developed by Minerva Research Labs and European scientists. Collagen is responsible for lending a youthful, plump appearance to the skin by playing a key role in providing the structural scaffolding for cells, tissues and organs. With age, the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in the body gradually decreases

which causes dehydration in the skin and a dull complexion, paving the way for ageing skin. The elixir offers the ultimate in skin cell regeneration and hydration, resulting in increased smoothness, softening the appearance of fine lines and decreasing the appearance of wrinkles. Skin is radiant and well hydrated, along with healthier looking hair and nails. Clinical studies brought about proven results. HAMMAM 101 T

Top tips for visiting a hammam – what to wear, take, expect and do to get the best out of this traditional treatment.

he name hammam means spreader of warmth. It is a bathing retreat that has its origins over a thousand years ago in Rome and is still found today in Morocco as well as Turkey and Spain. Popular across the Middle East, this detoxifying body treatment brings the whole body to a state of balance and wellbeing and leaves your skin as smooth as a baby’s bottom! Guests often combine a visit to the hammam with a relaxing and energising massage or other luxurious beauty treatments and there is no better way to destress and detox. The floor and walls of the hammam are warmed with steaming water running through pipes under the surface to give a heated and steamy atmosphere. If you are in a private facility, you can enter the bathing area naked, otherwise keep your panties on. Fill the basin with hot water and sit and absorb the heat, which will help relax your muscles. After about 10 minutes, test the water and adjust to what is comfortable for your skin. Then use the containers to pour water over your head. Scoop up a palm-sized blob of black soap* – it’s called black but is more a beautiful dark amber – and smooth it all over your skin allowing it to sink in for about 10 minutes. Then use an exfoliating mitt to scrub the skin, stripping away all the dead cells. You can see the skin peel off like tiny rolls of dirt. This exfoliation is both painful and pleasurable; it’s like a chemical peel without the chemicals – in many hammams, a therapist will carry out the scrubbing. Use plenty of hot water to rinse, leaving your body cleaner than you’ve ever been in your life and your skin as smooth as silk. The water in the basin should be left clear. Use the cups or bucket to scoop clean water and to rinse yourself. There are bath robes to slip into when you leave the hammam and enter the relaxation area. It is recommended not to undertake strenuous activity after a hammam. Instead choose a relaxing activity, maybe even have a massage or other beauty treatment. * Black soap has 100-per-cent natural

ingredients from the olive tree. It removes impurities from the skin, while hydrating and nourishing. It does not foam but becomes a cream as soon as you add (warm) water to it.

Your skin will feel super clean and soft. It is particularly recommended for dry skin and for the treatment of acne. When used on the hair, it gently cleanses, detangles and strengthens giving volume and brightness. The soap can be used instead of shampoo and will leave all hair types soft, shining and healthy. Joz Salon & Spa has its own private hammam and also offers massages and other beauty treatments. Call 16 031-120 (Amwaj), 17 369-133 (Juffair), 17 756-449 (Awali). www.womanthismonth.com

The Hollywood actress demands attention with her thick eye-brows and sweet face. Her makeup choice here is perfect for the new season, says Fernanda Langhammer. Full Brow Brushed brows are a good way to add a modern twist to your look. Lilly is blessed with abundant brows, which always helps; but they don’t have to be perfectly even. Notice there are actually gaps that give her look a unique aspect. An important tip to remember here is to pluck only in the area between the eyes and the brow and never on the upper part, to maintain a natural shape.

Short Cut Summer is about to wave goodbye and it’s time to take a closer look at your hair. The sun’s rays, pool water and salt water from the sea may damage your hair more than you’d expect. You might consider going for a short cut to allow time for recovery. Long or short bobs with irregular ends are a modern option that look good on every face shape, working as a beautifying frame. Make use of hairspray or mousse to add texture when styling.

Baby Skin Lilly is super young, which means her complexion doesn’t show any signs of ageing or damage from environmental agents such as sun and pollution. Her pale skin asks for a subtle foundation application and a good layer of very light loose powder – less is more for a flawless finish. A touch of brownish blush finalises this ‘princess of darkness’ look.

www.womanthismonth.com

Long Lashes Extra-long and spiky lashes, in my opinion, are always the best trick in any make-up style. They are an eye-catching element that doesn’t overtake the make-up. Look for mascaras that are formulated to get this kind of effect. However, the way you apply it makes a big difference. To elongate your lashes, semi-close your eyes and apply on top of the lashes from roots to tip and then open your eyes and coat lashes in the usual way. If you have short or sparse lashes, don’t be afraid to use fakes.

Dark Lips The scene stealer here is without doubt, the dark lipstick! Dark berry, burgundy, deep purple and even black are some (because you may discover a thousand more shades) of the lipstick colours you can find in the market today. Dark lips are a hot trend for the cold days when they match up with the fashionable winter hues. If you have pale skin, the result is going to be more dramatic – so opt for an outfit that teams well with this style. September 2016

So, we checked in with alternative health practitioner, Ravi Kumar Kavungal of the Kottakkal Ayurvedic Centre, for more blood… err, juice, on the matter. “One of the ways bloodletting (or raktamoksha),is carried out in Ayurveda is ‘Jaloukavacharanam’; jalouka meaning leech and vacharanam referring to the process in Sanskrit. showcase ROYAL BAHRAIN HOSPITAL

THYROID TROUBLE T

What does it mean when you’re told you have an underactive thyroid? An expert from this renowned hospital explains the repercussions of this disorder.

he thyroid gland is an important organ situated in the front of the lower neck. It produces the hormone thyroxine, which is closely linked to the metabolism in all cells and organs in the body. An underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism, is when the gland does not make enough thyroxine or has been removed by surgery or radiation therapy. “Hypothyroidism manifests as a general slowing of body processes and can have many symptoms, like unexplained weight gain with lethargy and fatigue being the most common,” says Dr Sunil J Rao, who specialises in internal medicine at the

Royal Bahrain Hospital. Other symptoms include menstrual disturbances, constipation, dry skin, hair fall, problems with memory and concentration, nerve pains in the hands and feet and feeling excessively cold, he says. The condition also causes puffiness of the body, especially the face and legs, and difficulty in conceiving. It is hence important that subtle or borderline deficiency of thyroxine is diagnosed and treated early on. Hypothyroidism is commonly caused by the production of an antibody to the thyroid tissue that gradually destroys the thyroid gland. This

progressive disease results in the decreasing function of the remaining thyroid tissue. Therefore, testing for these anti-bodies is important, in addition to testing the thyroid function. Complete or partial removal of the gland, or radiation treatment for an overactive thyroid gland are other reasons. Hypothyroidism cannot be cured, only kept under control with the intake of thyroxine tablets. With correct analysis and treatment, it can be managed effectively for optimal health and wellbeing. LET FITNESS BEAT THE HEAT Exercise rests lethargically on the back burner as the summer beams upon us. But these professional tips and pointers from fitness experts will keep you on track in spite of the soaring temperatures.

S

ummer time fitness needs a sustainable workout plan. Kick-start your mornings with 20 minutes of jogging on an empty stomach. This sets the momentum for the day in terms of cardio and also facilitates an increase in metabolism to help you achieve your fitness goals. There is no better time than summer to make that splash in the pool and stroke your way to a toned body. Swimming is an excellent way of staying in shape as well as beating the heat. If you think your body type demands more, challenge it with a HIIT(High Intensity Interval Training) driven schedule consisting of deadlift into row, plank to pushups and battle rope. Repeat them all in sets of three, resting every 30 seconds to allow your body time to recover. Your body is what you make of it. Let it burn, tone and chisel as you push yourself further with squats, biceps curls into overhead press, burpees and abs while your core muscles www.womanthismonth.com

on to step-up and crunch, stiff leg deadlift and leg raises. The final set moves through walking lunges and twists, back kicks and body weight sliding heel touches. Following the blocks one after another to complete four cycles will maximise your fitness levels even in this sultry weather.

Fitness is not just about exercise, but has many dimensions – such as healthy food habits. Sipping on water, fresh fruit juices and vitaminenriched water regularly is as essential as breathing when the temperatures soar. Choosing the right hydrating beverages and foods can make all the difference. A green juice or a whole food smoothie ensures a well hydrated start to the day. Watermelons, cantaloupes, celery, cucumbers and grapes should top your grocery list as they are all great sources of powerful hydration. Wear light, loose-fitting fabrics that allow sweat to evaporate. It is best that you exercise early in the day or later in the evenings. An early morning workout makes a great start to the day and keeps you energetic. Split your workouts in sets and repeat to optimise benefits. Lose your calories, not your mind this summer! LIVING WITH THALASSAEMIA Dr Basma Atef Younes explains a common blood disorder.

T

halassaemias are inherited blood disorders in which the body produces fewer healthy red blood cells and less haemoglobin, an iron-rich protein which carries oxygen around the body. Low levels of haemoglobin result in anaemia. Haemoglobin is made of two proteins: alpha globin and beta globin. Thalassaemia occurs when there is a defect in a gene that helps control their production. There are two main types of thalassemia – alpha and beta – which include two types: major and minor (traits). Sufferers must inherit the gene defect from both parents to develop thalassaemia major. The minor form occurs if the faulty gene comes from only one parent. Those affected are carriers and mostly do not have symptoms which include fatigue, weakness, paleness, jaundice, facial bone deformities, slow growth, abdominal swelling and dark urine. Complications of the disease include an enlarged spleen, due to extra work; blood infections, particularly if many

transfusions are needed; bone deformities and osteoporosis; and too much iron in the blood which can cause damage to the heart, liver or endocrine system. If thalassaemia is suspected your doctor will perform a physical exam to look for an

enlarged spleen and a blood sample will be sent to a laboratory to be tested. Prenatal testing is also available to detect the disease in unborn babies. Chronic villus sampling involves removing a tiny piece of the placenta and is usually done around the 11th week, while amniocentesis, to test the fluid surrounding the foetus, is performed at 16 weeks. Treatments: l No treatment – for those with thalassaemia traits and little or no anaemia. l Blood transfusion – lifelong for those with the severe form. l Chelation therapy – to manage iron overload related to frequent blood transfusions. l Management of vitamin E and folate deficiency. l Stem cell transplantation – used in selected patients. l Splenectomy – may be indicated in patients with high transfusion requirements. showcase BAHRAIN SPECIALIST HOSPITAL

HOPE FOR CROHN’S SUFFERERS Local studies have been presented on the international stage.

B

ahrain Gastroenterology and Hepatology Center (BGHC), led by Dr Najah Zayyani at Bahrain Specialist Hospital, conducted two major studies into Crohn’s disease and its prevalence amongst the Bahraini population. Data was collected over 20 years on a sample of 500-plus Bahraini Crohn’s sufferers and researchers in both Bahrain and the US analysed the information. The findings were presented at the 2016 Digestive Disease Week (DDW) in San Diego, an annual meeting attended by medical professionals from around the globe. The 15,000 participants present and share groundbreaking findings, and build on their knowledge of the fast-paced and ever-changing field of gastroenterology. It is a great

forum for professionals to learn about advancements in research and technology. Not much is published from the MENA region, and far less from the GCC area. The first Bahrain study, ‘Increasing incidence of Crohn’s disease in all age groups in the Kingdom of Bahrain’, is a retrospective investigation of 525 cases. It revealed an increase in cases from 1990 to 2015 following the global trend, reaching levels similar to those in the US and Europe. The second study illustrated the clustering of the disease among certain Bahraini families, signifying a possibility of common source exposure in their environment. Also clusters of the disease among family members, particularly first-degree relatives,

Dr Najah, with Dr David Graham, Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, and Dr Kasim Ardati, CEO, Bahrain Specialist Hospital

points to the role of genetics. Recent research conducted at BGHC, points to a possible link between Crohn’s and exposure to a zoonotic infection responsible for a similar disease in cattle which may lead to chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract

manifesting as Crohn’s disease. The plan is to conduct a study treating Crohn’s patients with a novel combination of antibiotics to control the infection, hopefully offering a complete cure. Call 17 812-000.

orn in Naples, Italy, in 1984, chef Alfonso Ferraioli started his journey at the city’s culinary school and was apprenticed in Italy in 2002 before heading overseas to develop his kitchen skills as a chef de cuisine in Corsica, France, Switzerland and England. Back in Italy, chef Alfonso headed to Rome where he joined the kitchen brigade of renowned chef Oliver Glowig, whose restaurant holds two coveted Michelin stars. He came to the Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain in 2015 when the hotel struck a partnership with chef Oliver to develop the menu for its Italian eatery, Primavera, his first foray into the Middle East. Since then, chef Alfonso has been busy developing the talented team and ensuring the island’s diners get the Michelin experience. He says: “I started my culinary career at a very young age and I am proud that my early passion has brought me to become a ‘Gentleman of The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain’ and the leader of the talented Primavera kitchen. Through our company philosophy and through my career, we share the same enjoyment in valuing diversity in cultures and terroir. Being in this region provides a chance for me to showcase traditional hearty Italian cuisine, in all its simplicity.” Here chef Alfonso shares one of Primavera’s most popular recipes.

Executive chef Brian Becher’s kitchen motto is: “My last mistake is my greatest teacher.” Born in Philadelphia, USA, his skills have been honed not just by study but also through experience. He says: “All my culinary knowledge came by way of on-the-job learning through staging, which means working unpaid for knowledge. I like to tell people that I went from high school right to the pros.” In fact, chef Brian actually started out much closer to home, in Grandma’s kitchen! He explains: “I used to watch my grandmother prepare meals for the family. No matter what each member of the family was doing at the time, they would stop and gather when the food was ready. This was powerful and significant to me.” Of his decision to join the Puck operation when it opened in Bahrain, he adds: “The fact that the project was happening with Four Seasons was a major attraction for me. I wanted to be here in Bahrain because so many cultures are represented here. This, in turn, presents so many opportunities to grow as a chef by experiencing new food, new cooking techniques and new ingredients.” www.womanthismonth.com

showcase FURN BISTRO AND BAKERY

Contemporary Traditions

I

Adding a modern twist to Khaleeji food, Puja Tiwari finds this restaurant the definition of a great dining experience.

n the past few years, there has been a surge in eateries serving traditional Khaleeji and local cuisine. More people are embracing the region's typical cooking including bright, beautiful mezze platters, savoury flatbreads, grilled meats and sugar-drenched pastries. The newly-launched Furn Bistro and Bakery at the Westin Bahrain City Centre steals the show offering a fine-dining experience of timeless fare with a contemporary twist. The décor is modern and spacious, predominantly furnished with earthy tones and marble fittings. The food is skillfully prepared by Bahraini chef Manaf Al Ghanim and his culinary team. Chef Manaf came out to chat with us about the menu and, based on his suggestions, we placed our order for lunch.

As we waited for the entrée, I noticed bottles of preserves and olive oil adorning the wall, and inquired with the waiter, who explained that the preserves are made especially for Furn, and sold in-house. First on the table is the classic

Arabic staple moutabel, but with a hazy twist. It is smoked with apple wood and enclosed beneath a glass cone to capture the mist. As the waiter removes the covering, a robust aroma wafts around our table and we see the dip is garnished with pomegranate seeds and ribbons of carrot and cucumber. The presentation of this dish is simply dazzling. The tabouleh salad arrives in a clear glass bowl, with finely chopped kale, parsley, quinoa and tomatoes resting on a bed of lemon slices. Accompanying it are coffee-infused vine leaves stuffed with rice and drizzled in pomegranate syrup. Having never been a fan of vine leaves, I wasn’t sure of this dish. But all it took was a single bite to banish my reservations. The tart flavour of the leaves is balanced by the sweetness of the syrup. Our main course consisted of Fie Qataath, a Bahraini dish of baked chicken in mutabbaq bread

and rice, meant to be turned over and served upside down. Chef Manaf explained that the dish is a speciality in Bahraini homes when guests visit. To taste, it is similar to biryani but has a more pronounced flavour. The chicken is tender and the portion is generous enough to share between two. As my dining companion was vegetarian, we opted for quinoa madrooba, a guilt-free take on the traditional puréed chicken and lentil recipe. Roasted pumpkin, sautéed veggies, dried onions and almonds are blended to a velvety texture,

with the pumpkin lending it a sweet tinge. Chef Manaf brought two gorgeous desserts to our table, Egyptian bread pudding Umm Ali and a sundae consisting of local halwa, cardamom panna cotta and rosewater sorbet. He went on to explain the riveting history behind the dishes adding in some other interesting facts along the way. The sweetness of the Umm Ali was balanced by the unsweetened pistachio paste that lined the plate while the sundae offered a kaleidoscope of flavours and textures, marking a delicious end to a hearty meal. A bakery extends from the restaurant, where you can watch artisans working with dough to create authentic Arabic and Western items. Furn offers a rewarding culinary experience at any time of the day and, being attached to City Centre Bahrain, is also perfect for a quick meal during a jaunt to the mall. Call 17 171-441. PARENTING | tech kids

Engaging Teens As kids, both big and little, head back to school, it’s easy to think that online time will be all about either homework or games. However, there are plenty of sites out there that are both educational and, at the same time, interesting enough to keep teenagers engaged. We’ve rounded up a few of our favourites.

Dogonews.com

Amightygirl.com

As you might expect from the name, this site is dedicated to girls and claims to have the world’s largest collection of books, toys, movies and music for parents, teachers and others dedicated to raising smart, confident and courageous girls - and, of course, for girls themselves. It regularly posts articles about strong women both historical and contemporary and gives suggestions on books to read to find out more. The literature promoted shows girls don’t have to be relegated to the role of sidekick or damsel in distress; they can be the leaders, heroes, the champions that save the day, find the cure and go on the adventure.

An excellent resource for young news hounds, Dogo is the leading online network empowering youngsters to engage with digital media in a fun, safe and social environment. Used by well over a million students and teachers from around the world, the websites have quickly grown into a community of kids and educators engaging positively with current events, books, and movies. The news section features articles written in an easy and informative style and covering topics as diverse as the race for the White House and why ‘Finding Dory’ for your aquarium may not be a good idea. There are also various other areas to explore, from green stories to entertainment and videos.

Spatulatta.com

A great resource for families battling with picky eaters and for those preparing teens to head out into the big wide world, this site has 350 step-by-step video recipes, a section on basic skills, vegan and vegetarian options and even an artsy section for special occasions such as Halloween.

Howstuffworks.com

Not strictly for kids, this site actually has some pretty adult content but it makes our list because it also covers a huge range of topics and is an award-winning source of unbiased, reliable, easy-to-understand answers and explanations of how the world actually works today. From how Olympic time works to what if the earth’s core cooled? Parental supervision is advised but, be warned, you might find yourself being sucked in for a mega surfing session.

PARENTING | advice

Need to Know

Q

Dr Jinan Harith Darwish is a paediatric allergy specialist and clinical immunology fellow at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center. Each month she answers your parenting questions.

My daughter loves the water and swims like a fish but, no matter how much sunscreen I put on, I still see her skin getting slightly red and she is developing freckles. I’m worried about the damage to her skin but don’t want to deprive her of an activity that she loves. Can you recommend a really good strong sunscreen or any other measures I could take? Helen

A

People are not exactly born with freckles, but can have a predisposed heredity to developing them. Sun exposure makes freckles more obvious, but an individual’s genetics will determine how many and how much sun exposure will reveal the freckles. Avoiding the sun will diminish freckles. This is why many freckled-faces disappear during the winter months when sunlight is scarce. You can avoid freckle development by keeping her out of the sun and generously applying and reapplying sunscreen every two hours to block ultraviolet rays. All infants should be kept out of direct sun and be covered by protective clothing when possible. If sun exposure is inevitable, sunscreen should be applied to exposed areas (such as face, hands). Sunscreens have been deemed safe for infants older than six months. Choose a broad- spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30. The protective ability of sunscreen is rated by its Sun Protection Factor (SPF) – the higher the SPF, the stronger the protection. Don’t be swayed by high SPF numbers alone, research has proven that SPF greater then 30 does very little to amplify

protection. Sometimes it does the exact converse, it gives you as a parent an over-confidence about the protection provided and you forget to reapply every two hours, defeating the purpose altogether. Sunscreens labelled as ‘broad spectrum’ indicate that they have passed the test for protection against UVA. Spread sunscreen uniformly over all uncovered skin, including ears and lips, but avoid the eyelids. To protect against both UVA and UVB rays, look for one of the following main ingredients on the label: avobenzone, titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. For the full effects, make sure that the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are at least five per cent. Avobenzone is a chemical created to absorb UVA rays. A main ingredient in most sunscreens on the market today, it can be absorbed into the skin. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are natural mineral UV blockers. They are believed to cause less skin irritation because these ingredients stay on top of the skin, unlike the chemical ingredients which can be absorbed. If your child gets a rash from

sunscreen, look for one that is: • Fragrance free • PABA free • Hypoallergenic The FDA defines water resistant and waterproof sunscreens as: • Water resistant: maintain their SPF rating for at least 40 minutes after water exposure. • Waterproof: maintain their SPF rating for at least 80 minutes after water exposure. Even if your kids are not going swimming, a water-resistant sunscreen is preferred for children. If possible, avoid the sun between 10am and 2pm. It is best to plan indoor activities or seek shade under trees or umbrellas. One useful rule of thumb is that if your shadow is shorter than you, the sun is directly above and it is best to head for cover. Sun exposure is more intense closer to the equator, in the mountains and in the summer. The sun's damaging rays are increased by reflection from water, white sand and snow.

Children who are regarded as late talkers are those who have fewer than 50 words at age two and use limited or no two- or three-word combinations, such as ‘more milk’. Certain risk factors or signs of speech delays at age two suggest a child should receive early language intervention services. These signs include: • Small vocabulary for age fewer than 20 words • Use of few verbs • Difficulty comprehending simple language • Limited vocalisations with few consonants • Reduced or absent imitation • Few communicative gestures (for example, shaking head for ‘no’) • Chronic middle ear infections • Family history of delayed speech, language or reading. If you recognise any of the above in your son, contact your paediatrician. She or he will likely seek further evaluation, including a hearing test and a developmental assessment. Although early intervention and speech therapy are necessary to help a child with speech delays, you can support a child's speech by reading to him or her. Picture books are brilliant because they allow you to make a game of pointing and naming familiar objects.

Beat the Bullies

ullying - a reality every parent will have to deal with at some point. The truth is, bullying happens much more often than we think. And we, as parents, are sometimes conflicted about how to help our children get through these tough experiences, whether they are the victims of bullying or the ones doing the bullying. This month, we focus on what to do if your child is being bullied. Let’s first address a few important points that are crucial to appreciate: What exactly is bullying and what are its different forms? Bullying is when someone, quite often, stronger or 'more popular' hurts or scares another person repeatedly. The behaviour is intentional, premeditated and methodical, and it takes on several forms: Verbal Bullying includes name calling, teasing, public humiliation, spreading lies and rumours. Physical Bullying is the most obvious form of intimidation and includes kicking, hitting, biting, pinching, hair pulling, ganging-up on or plotting against another, being threatened or forced to do things and defacing one's property. Boys are more inclined to utilise such overt methods. Some of the most subtle and covert forms of bullying are emotional intimidation and social exclusion, often utilised by girls and very difficult to detect. Racial, sexual, and cyberbullying are other forms. Cyberbullying happens by use of the Internet, mobile phones or other cyber technology and deserves a focus all on its own. All forms of bullying aim to hurt, torment, threaten, harass, humiliate and embarrass the target. How can you tell if you child is being bullied, and what are its effects on your child? If your child comes home with unexplained cuts, bruises or scratches, damaged or missing belongings, then I recommend investigating. Some less obvious warning signs are if your child has few friends or spends excessive time alone, seems afraid of going to school, has

92

September 2016

lost interest in school work, performs less or if they appear sad, anxious, moody, have trouble sleeping or loss of appetite, experience low self-esteem and suicidal thoughts. Other signs, often assumed to be excuses to avoid school, are repeated complaints of physical ailments. It’s important to note that they may feel they have no one to turn to. My daughter once expressed that if the parent does not listen without judgment or show compassion, then kids will not confide in their parents. Additionally, if your child complains of their teacher picking on them, yelling a lot, threatening them or intimidating them to generate behavioural compliance, then this is an outright form of adult bullying and must not be taken lightly. You must never disregard the possibility that the bully is a teacher or coach and not another kid. In this case, your child will need your utmost support. Why do bullies bully? In order to help your child deal with their

bullies, both you and they need to understand the reasons behind bullying behaviour. The strongest influence lies in the home. Overly strict, abusive, neglectful or permissive parenting are all incentives for a child to either lash out at other kids or imitate such aggressive behaviours. Also at a higher risk for becoming bullies are children of parents who are either divorced, overly busy or tired or regularly under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Kids subject to these unpredictable and unstructured environments are insecure and use abusive behaviour to feel empowered and secure. They have not learned how to handle conflicts well. When bullies are asked to explain their behaviour, common replies include that it makes them feel stronger, they want to hang out with the cool crowd, they’re jealous, others bully them or they want to keep others from bullying them. However, bullying is a learned behaviour and can therefore be unlearned. www.womanthismonth.com

So, what can you do to help your child deal with a bully? Kids and teens look to their parents for protection and advice. Many think bullying will toughen kids up or that it’s a rite of passage. It used to be the case but we live in a different world today. There’s no easy or straightforward answer - the truth is, it’s complicated. The best way to handle a bullying situation is to assess it case by case. Each bully and each victim is different, coming from a different home environment with a different personality, different motives, emotional responses, etc. Having said that, there are several educated strategies you can utilise. My first advice would be to never stay silent. Speak out and encourage your children to do the same. Your child needs to understand that they have your full support along with the support of others. So, always report it to the school or to the police if it occurs outside the school. You can try going through the proper channels; however, take it directly to the principal if you have to by scheduling a faceto-face appointment. Secondly, document everything, collect evidence where you can find it. Be sure to tell exactly what happened - who was bullied, who the bully was, where and when it happened. Even if you suspect a kid is being bullied, it's a good idea to report that, too. Tell your child that if one adult doesn’t listen, tell another and another until someone does something to help. Obtain a copy of the school’s antibullying policy to determine if there’s a violation, so the bully is held accountable for their actions. Also, send an email to the principal recapping what actions have been agreed to stop the bullying. This will put the principal on the alert that you are watching for the agreed resolution to be honoured. Check in with your child periodically and keep the principal updated. Many of us fail to be consistent with this but it is important to remain persistent. The more seriously parents take it, the more seriously the school will take it. If the bullying continues or occurs outside of school, you may need to move up the chain of command, reporting it to the ministry or the police. Definitely file charges if you have to. The bully needs to see that the spotlight is on them, that they have a track record following them and that they’re walking on thin ice. Let the school know of any charges filed against the bully outside of school. Thirdly, teach your children www.womanthismonth.com

to stand up for themselves. Many of us are taught to simply stay quiet or walk away. That may work in some cases because the bully wants to see an emotional and vulnerable reaction like fear or sadness; and if those reactions are not shown, they will lose interest and power. However, in many other cases, walking away or staying quiet can be misinterpreted as a sign of fear and weakness; they will continue to torment your child. So the bully will need to witness a different kind of reaction from your child; one that communicates, “I’m not scared of you, and I’m ready to do whatever it takes to defend myself and put you back in your place.” I always teach my children that we never start fights, but we will certainly finish them! Feel free to verbally defend yourself, as well as physically if someone tries to hurt you physically. And then report it! Never keep the pain of being bullied to yourself. Sometimes it takes walking right up to the bully, look them straight in the eyes, and give them a good come-back line, like “It’s funny how you really think I care”. Sit down with your children and brainstorm ways they could verbally respond, then role-play with them so they get comfortable with verbal self-defence. It’s also important to walk away after the comeback; that takes away from the bully’s power. Educate your kids about the etiology of bullying. It can be confusing to them because there’s a lot of different types of bullying behaviours, some overt and some covert, and those behaviours are driven by different reasons with various intents, under different circumstances, situations, and gateways. So one of the most

empowering 'weapons' you can give to your child is education. Which means you have to become an expert on bullying yourself. Don’t simply pass on your inherited knowledge from your own parents. Our children live in a different world, one that consists of the physical and the cyber. When your kids understand the psychology behind the behaviour and what the bully’s weaknesses are, you remove the mystery behind the behaviour and they feel less intimidated. And therefore, they are more likely to stand up for themselves. It is also important to distinguish between boy-bullying and girl-bullying. Boys tend to be more overt and obvious, with loud verbal and physical aggression. Girl bullying is harder to detect as it is much more covert, with subtle, secretive, manipulative, calculated and inconspicuous behaviours. So handling boy bullies will require different strategies than the ones used to handle girl bullies. Your children should also know that bullies love to target loners. So encourage your children to socialise and make friends. Better yet, encourage them to be friends with someone they know is being bullied. Keep them company and include them in social circles or events. Sometimes physically standing side-by-side with the victim as an act of support will make the bully think twice. These are some of the strongest ways to minimise incidences of bullying. There are many books and websites dedicated to helping parents and victims of bullying. Do your research and always seek professional help if you feel you have tried everything with little progress. For further questions or support, email lamar.kanafani@gmail.com or call 36 009-665. Star

Gazing Raphael tells us what’s written in the stars this month Virgo

September will see you in reflective mode as you analyse the year so far and wonder whether the pain you have been suffering has taught you anything about those close to you as well as yourself. Specifically, someone who wronged you may return seeking forgiveness. Judge the matter carefully for it is a delicate one with a multitude of outcomes.

Sagittarius

The start of this month will see you combating financial hardships with an even measure of success as you seek to level out the last few months of complicated monetary difficulties. As the opportunity presents itself to you, be sure to grasp it firmly with both hands. You should ensure that any major purchases made recently are the last for some time. You need to be sensible for a while.

Capricorn

Often, the things that hurt us most can be traced back to our own foolishness and your particular crime this month is one of vanity www.womanthismonth.com

If getting back into your stride at work and home following a break has been proving too much, then perhaps the problem is a deeper one than you may have realised. Primarily, a lingering sense of dissatisfaction with your employment position and direction could mean that you need to move on. Bigger and better opportunities currently lie in wait for you beyond the obvious but you need to summon the willpower to put movement to these aspirations. Bright days lie ahead for you as your aspirations come to fruition. You are encouraged to appreciate the good fortune of your situation but also be careful not to allow its brightness to blind you. Appreciate those close to you and show the ones that have helped you get this far that they are important to you. Everybody needs somebody and when it’s time to say thank you, that needs to be remembered.

Libra

Scorpio

Aries

Taurus

Romantic problems have been properly ironed out and emotionally you will feel that you are on the road to recovery in your present relationship. In fact, wedding bells may even be in the air for the future as you seek to attain a greater commitment from that ‘special person’ in your life. A relative may exert pressure on you to lend money and you must judge very carefully whether you would be doing the right thing. An illicit affair that has seen both you and your partner risking much may finally come into the open. You may find yourselves ostracised – and with good reason – as those hurt by your actions turn their pain to revenge! However, there is still time for you to escape this possible scenario by accepting the error of your ways and putting the deception behind you. Is it love or simply lust?

horoscopes

Gemini

and pride. Beware, as it could come back to hurt you in more ways than one. You have been warned. If you are standing your ground in a long-running feud with a relative, then be careful that you do not cut your nose off to spite your face.

Aquarius

Many of you will be in a reflective mood this month and relationships are high on the agenda, especially those that appear to have struck a dead end. If you feel your marriage or partnership has lost its sparkle, then why not try setting aside a weekend where the two of you can rekindle the embers. A contented heart will help you to appreciate the other areas of your life.

Pisces

You may have been aware of a friend’s indiscretions for some time but this month could leave you with a real poser as you mistakenly walk into the thick of things by catching them in the act! Use your knowledge to good effect by trying to convince the wayward individual to mend their ways. Once a secret is out – especially one with the potential to cause so much harm – the best you can do is limit the damage.

September sees you having to face up to a stern lesson in humility and you could meet your match in an adversary at work. A conflict will initially arise through a disagreement over a financial issue and will then escalate. You could even be forced to seek legal advice. Your patience will be strained and edgy but you should try not to take out your frustrations on family or friends. The solution to your problem may be to swallow your pride.

Cancer

Nothing is more sacred to parents than their own children but no one ever said that bringing up a family was easy. September will test your patience and love as one child extends your generous nature almost to breaking point. A stern hand and a prudent head are both required if the matter is to be resolved in the most suitable fashion. A little time away from home will help ease tensions.

Leo

You will be feeling a little lost and isolated this month as the problems in your family circle seem to take their toll on your emotions. Perhaps you should make September the month when you discard the selfless attitude you have been adopting and consider your own needs for a change. Others close to you are being neglected because of your sacrifices. Don’t leave the situation until it is too late. September 2016
