Aasavari Shenolkar, Deputy Editor, The Hitavada, Nagpur A magazine of this magnitude both in looks and content from Visakhapatnam is not just a pleasant surprise, but very awe-inspiring. The hard work and dedication of the team that go into the making of the magazine is very palpable. As a journalist and the editor of the magazine section, I also can gauge the hardship a team faces in successfully putting together a magazine of international standards. I congratulate the Publisher, the Editor and their team for the great job they are doing. Wish you all the best.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

The term of the elected body of Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation came to an end last month. Appearing to be quite content with its performance, Mayor Pulusu Janardhana Rao listed a number of projects and works completed during its tenure. Sir, but what about the hanging Asilmetta flyover, incomplete Bus Rapid Transit System and drainage projects? Besides being an ugly scar on the face of the city, the suspended flyover, with its exposed skeleton, has become an unending nightmare for the commuter. Half-finished drainage work has left the roads in a terrible shape. Mr. Rao blames the BRTS fiasco on the Railway and Navy. But let me reiterate that nothing can be more tiring than “the eternal hanging on an uncompleted task.” Mr. Rao and his team should admit that they failed to apply the much-needed stitch on time. There were miles to go before they left. The mention of unfulfilled tasks immediately takes my mind, albeit in a different context, to the recent untimely demise of Mr. Grandhi Manoj Kumar, Chairman of Vaibhav Empire Limited and Vaibhav Jewellers. He dreamed big for himself and the city and was working towards his goal when he fell prey to the human greed. We hope the Vaibhav family endures this tragedy with equanimity and succeeds in fulfilling his dreams. On the positive side, we see one silver lining in the dark clouds hanging over the city. Come March 26, the first flight to Dubai will be taking off from here, propelling the city into the world aviation map. This is the most coveted facility the local leaders have been pushing for quite sometime as the efficient connectivity is vital for the region’s prosperity. On this very optimistic note I say bye wishing you all a very happy Holi and a cheerful Ugadi.

E D I T O R ’ S S AY

Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Women are tea bags. You never know how strong they are until they get into hot water.” Isn’t she true? Do you know the secret underlying the womanhood? In spite of spending an entire lifetime over it, nobody could decode the enigma called woman. That’s a very well-kept secret and remains so forever. On the eve of International Women’s Day, we caught hold of a few such enigmatic ladies in the city who work wonders at home and the work place too. These women, who have spoken their hearts out, are bound to make a lasting impression on our readers. It’s also time for Ugadi and Holi. Though the former is welcomed without any fuss, Holi celebrations can actually invite some risks. Before you start singing rang barsee bheege chunarwaali...think about the chemical loaded colours that leave you itchy all over. Play Holi, the green way. Since it is all about colours, how about splashing your home with colours? Now! Don’t run around with pichkaaris but check out what we have in store! Kashmir, the paradise on the Earth is the best summer vacation. If you are just about to plan a holiday, then you could not have chosen better time. Check out what’s there in the travel section. March is also exams time for all the students. Burning the midnight oil, ‘combined studies’, breaks, powernaps and also valedictory functions and campus recruitments mark the season! Ah! How I miss my college life! As students bid farewell to this colourful phase, I wish them all the best for their future. Study first, enjoy next! Do I sound very preachy? If she had sizzled at our inauguration gala then, she is frozen on our cover now. Miss Twinkle Toes Parvati Melton oozed her oomph, dancing her way into millions of hearts with the item number in Dookudu! After that it’s only natural that she’s a tad busy. Yet we managed to pin her down for a chat. Hope the Nandana Nama Samvatsaram brings prosperity and good health to all of you!

HOLI

HELL

n our country the festival-driven market tries to cash in on every occasion, leaving scruples to winds. Today Holi is callously commercialised with substandard substitutes for the natural colours. Ranita Ray points out the dangers on the eve of Holi. A Earlier, purely organic colours (gulal) which are extracts from the spring blossoms like parijat (Indian Coral Tree), Tesu (Flame of the Forest) were used to play Holi. They are good for skin. However, now the colours are mixed with deadly compounds like mica, acids, alkalis, pieces of glass. “Their ill effects range from local skin reactions to mental trauma. the Mucus Membrum, causing eye allergy, temporary and permanent blindness, even nervous breakdown and respiratory problems. Patients with sinusitis and asthma may land in medical emergency. There are reported cases of cancer. Play with colours, but with safe ones, warns Dr. P Praveena, Chief consultant and Dermatologist, Touch Clinic.

“Holi, is it a gala of colours or gale to environment?” asks environmentalist, GV Suvarna.

“Earlier, colours were made of kumkum and turmeric. Now revelers want to carry the signs of festivities longer and use bright colours. Most of the colours are synthetic and get imported from China. They can cause Irritant Contact Dermatitis apart from minor effects like redness or Erythema, burning and itching sensation. Eczema patients are worst hit hence we better avoid them,” cautions Dr. Sailaja Surapaneni, Dermatologist.

of lead, mercury and other heavy metals trigger Itai-Itai (fragile bones), Minimata disease (disorder of the nervous system) and cause bio-magnifications in food chain too.”

She continues “Originally the practice, using organic colours, came into vogue to build body immunity to face the season’s change. But today’s synthetic colours are replete with chemicals that are detrimental not only to the users but also to the environment. Post-celebration mass bathing in water bodies leads to water and soil pollution. Often accumulation

“The deadliest of all are the water colours,” says Pritam, owner of Karachiwala store. “There is a growing demand for bright and lasting colours. We, on our part try to control quality, procuring organic colours that too only from our trusted dealers in Mumbai.”

RENEURS

According to World Bank, globally around 25 to 33 per cent of all private businesses are owned or run by women. There are studies which proved that women-owned enterprises grow faster than those owned by men. On the eve of 101 years of International Women’s Day, red magazine is celebrating the best of womanhood. Ranita Ray and Kalyani Rajasekhar try to take inspirations from the city’s five such women who thought globally and excelled locally.

THE TEENY BOPPER Her bright and colourful playschool in a picturesque location speaks volumes about Poonam Shah Srinath, the brain behind Teeny Boppers. Way back in 2003, when she set up a preschool for tiny tots, people were cynical about its success. However, the school turned out to be a game changer! Her methods of imparting education were matchless. Today, she owns one of the finest kindergartens in Vizag and also heads the Vizag chapter of CII Young Indians (Yi). For her work is play in the school.

First step When we shifted here in 1997 from Hyderabad, I wanted to take a break from my decade-long career in the hospitality industry. The nine-to-five job, which necessitates leaving my daughter alone at home, never appealed to me. But the turning point came when I went to join her in a play school and the school’s management offered me work. The journey I was always haunted by a question - Are we providing the right kind of primary education which provides kids with the much wanted fun? After much meditation and deliberation, I came up with my play school, which I can run on my own terms. I started off the Teenyboppers Siripuram branch with just 40 kids and a couple of teachers but now we have two schools, 400 kids, 20 staff and 35 teachers. Can you believe it? I never resorted to any publicity drive, the performance of the schools spoke for itself.

Unique curriculum Not confining myself to a set and strict course, I try to bring in new traits the other disciplines offer. I travel frequently to the UK and keep myself abreast of new concepts and teaching methods and make it relevant to the local situation. We also combine the best of Kindergarten and Montessori education systems to make our training efficacious. The kids learn just one alphabet a week. All activities, concepts, phonics and vocabulary revolve round that single letter. I personally train my teachers and staff to deliver the best goods. The juggling act I have never neglected my family due to work or vice versa. I flawlessly managed everything without having to compromise. Challenges My non-native look and informal disposition raised quite a few eyebrows. People were even skeptical about my abilities. Things started looking up only after I became conversant with the local language. Advice The first pre-requisite is patience. Kids are very demanding and you should be armed with answers to all the questions they shoot at you. Be humane to your subordinates. And finally, don’t expect money to flow in instantly.

A CLASS APART Young and bubbly, she breaks the clichéd image of strict headmistress and reminds us of Sushmita Sen in Main Hoon Na. Rajini Chitra of Pollocks School never imagined that she would run a school. After earning a masters degree in Electronics, this pretty lady joined software giant, Mainframe. Today, she serves as the Vice-Principal for six branches.

Admission My mother-in-law, the late Mrs. Vijayalakshmi Chitra established Pollocks in 1966. My entry into the family in 1999, also marked the beginning of my life as an educationist. At her behest, I joined the school as the co-ordinator and physics teacher. However, with her sudden demise in 2000, I and my husband, Mr. Sandeep Chitra, took charge as the Vice-principal and Principal respectively, with an aim to give shape to her vision. Tests We faced stiff resistance from the teachers with set ideologies, skeptic parents, besides the frequent comparisons with the old system etc. For years together we had to struggle to prove our worth. Reservations In a society where male supremacy is an accepted norm, taking orders from a woman is quite hard. However, the womanhood too comes handy at times, especially to pacify a fuming opponent. It’s only with your brain and managerial skills you can establish your credentials. red | march 2012 | 36

Mark the difference Ours is a complete school, not a marks-generating machine. Though we are in sync with new changes, we also imbue old moral values in students. We provide affordable education without compromising on quality. Dedicated and experienced teachers are prized possessions. Extracurricular Today competition is tough, tougher, toughest! We set the trend of modernising the education system in Vizag. A few of them are the SMS intimation to parents, CCTV monitoring etc. We are willing to take leaf out of other schools. But certainly mould it the Pollocks’ way to stay ahead in this crazy race. Promotion Two new branches, one in Gajuwaka and the other in Madhurwada, are in the pipeline. Made easy Education is the only field which is recession-free. It’s a paradise for women. Besides offering comfortable working hours, it earns you good income and above all immense dignity. Success comes to you only if you are passionate about it.

ETHNIC STYLIST Business might not be the first thing that comes to your mind when you look at Padmaja, the proud owner of Aarna. But as you talk to her you discover a strong, ambitious and confident heart that constantly dreams of achieving greater heights behind her soft and college girl looks. Quite understandably, her store in Kirlampudi Layout reflects her persona. Two years ago, she joined hands with her sister-in-law and started a boutique that houses ethnic women’s wear.

The switch I am a chartered accountant by profession. After my marriage, I moved to Vizag and started assisting my realtor husband. However, I always wanted to be on my own. Luckily my in-laws too are very encouraging and I ventured into retailing women’s wear. That’s how Aarna was born. Travelling across the country to pick up stock in itself is an enriching experience. It is going great guns. Why the name Aarna? We wanted something very traditional and meaningful and Aarna means a new wave or change. And in Vedic language it signifies Goddess Lakshmi. What’s in store for the city? Earlier, we were forced to travel to Hyderabad or Bombay to buy ‘good’ clothes. But the mushrooming malls and boutiques have changed the scenario in the city today. Yet I cannot say that our people are ready for designers like Vikram Phadnis, Manish Malhotra, Sabyasachi Mukherjee and

Rina Dhaka. They only go for quality and range, based on which we fill our shelves. It may take time but we too will eventually introduce designer wear. Future projects Women are great multi-taskers. If they are empowered, they can work wonders. I don’t know how far I will be able to accomplish this task but I want to empower women and provide livelihood for at least 100 of them. Competition Though very healthy, it is getting tougher by the day. If you want people to know your USP, there must be a rival. Advice If you want to venture into a business and build your own identity, then nothing should stop you. Just dream big and work hard. Don’t be disheartened even if you fail. Be happy that you took a shot at it.

BAKING MAVERICK Take the ingredients, make a smooth batter, give a final check and put it for a perfect bake. If you think that’s all you need to know to own the best bakery in town, you are mistaken. Only after hard work, you enjoy a creamy pastry, sip that coffee and indulge in long chats. That is what Abha Chauhan did, to mould her Pastry, Coffee n Conversation. Added to her charisma is her evergreen beauty that worked as icing on the cake.

How it cooked It all started with baking goodies for my children who studied in a boarding school. Commercially, it began with brownies for my friend’s snooker club. Finally, in 2002 PCnC was out of the oven. New taste The real challenge was to introduce the new kind of food, which Vizagites were not familiar with. They only knew flavours like strawberry and vanilla and the continental delicacies were the domain of star hotels. I brought in a revolution by introducing chocolate flavours in pastries, mousse and brownies and took out the continental fare out of the hotels’ pantries. The grind A decade ago it was absolutely zero. Today one can find bakeries in every nook and corner. It doesn’t bother me as I am confident about my products and clear about my target customers. Till date our quality assurance and keeping up with the latest food fad help me retain the

stronghold. As a freelancer and the unit-owner, I enjoy the freedom to experiment. Lumps More or less it’s a smooth sail so far. Only disturbing factor is the poaching of my highly skilled workforce. Icing I train all my staff - right from the chef to the serving boy. My personal touch is reserved for special orders. In store Opening a new outlet, to serve a wider variety of cuisine and add-ons like salads. We are scouting for space. Tips This industry is great for women. A coffee shop is better than other eateries as it is a perfect hangout place. For me, it’s like running the home on a large scale. Stacking inventory, managing accounts or even serving customers are manifestations of feminine traits.

SURPASSING WITH SUBWAY Simple, composed with a pleasant charm, she epitomises the ‘sweet mom image’. True to her nature, she treats everyone to healthy yet delicious food. No more guesses! She is Rajyalakshmi; the lady who steered her way to success through Subway.

Unwrapping My children always wanted to see me as an independent woman. I just got lucky when my husband spotted an ad for franchisee and registered my name. I got through the interview and Vizag got its first Subway in 2006. Freezing points The city was not a ready market for us. We had to overcome quite a few logistic hurdles as we deal with frozen products like zuccini, olives, lettuce etc., which were not available locally. Procuring or preserving them was tricky. Variety, no spice here Six years ago, neither there was awareness of such food nor was there any competition. With the local spicy food dominating the scene, pushing subs that are bland and full of raw vegetables was tough. The locals were apprehensive about the price too. We literally had to serve an explanation with each platter. High on quality and low in calorie yet tasty food and excellent service help us march

ahead. Now we run three outlets in Vizag and one in Vijayawada. On silver platter Brand is a safe launching pad as it earns you an instant recognition. However, a small compromise or minor mistake can malign even a reputed brand. On flipside, being with a brand leaves no scope for experimenting. Any one’s bite Work has no gender. I refuse to buy that argument. Next order Next on the agenda is opening one more Subway outlet (not in Vizag). I want to concentrate on our recently opened boutique, Miraaya. Right dough Be passionate about your work. Treat your customers as your family; then only you can serve them better. This is what I do.

Fuming Priyamani scotches rumour Superhot Priyamani is infuriated at the media for ‘fabricating’ a scandal involving her and actor Sachin Joshi. During the CCL matches, a newspaper reported that Sachin harassed the actress in an inebriated condition. He is also reported to have pulled her hand and hugged her in the field when she was busy cheering the players. A Mumbai tabloid was behind Priyamani to confess to the incident. But all this is trash and the fabrication of jobless media, says an infuriated Priya. The duo is also planning to hold a press conference to clear the air because Sachin is all set to tie the knot with a model. Naturally, he doesn’t want any glitches in his relationship.

Nayan back to Simbu After Srirama Rajyam, many producers and directors were behind the Malayalam beauty Nayanatara to sign more films. But she wanted to don the housewife avatar post her marriage with Prabhu Deva. Now that the couple has allegedly parted ways, Nayan is a free bird and is currently on a film-signing spree. She recently signed a rom-com with Nagarjuna. Rumours are rife that she is also trying to start her second innings in Kollywood and that too with her ex-boyfriend Simbu. These ex-flames have signed a new film that goes on the floors next month. Moreover, Nayan recently said that a difficult phase in life was over and she’s all set to make a comeback. Where is Prabhu Deva by the way? Will he go back to his estranged wife?

No more Happy Days Happy Days girl Tamanna is concentrating only on Telugu films and is reportedly saying no to Tamil thambis. All we ask is WHY? This milk white beauty ruled the roost in Chennai until last year and suddenly she lost interest in their stories. A little birdie tells us that a love affair between the young lass and Karthi caused this colossal damage. The duo that paired up for Awara was smitten by each other and just couldn’t stay away. But Tamil producers were irked with Tammu’s closeness to the young hero who belongs to a respectful family and decided not to offer her films. That was when she got back to Tollywood and signed biggies. The boycott continues and the actress is denied plum offers with Jiva, Ajith, Surya and Simbu.

Trisha is single Despite getting linked with many eligible hunks in the tinsel town, Trisha still remains single and is ready to mingle. Prabhas, Rana and Simbu were all rumoured to be in a relationship with her and sections of media came up with stories of her marriage with Young Rebel Prabhas. Though they term their relationship a ‘friendship’, industry circles report that there is ‘something-something’ between the both. Ready for Mango?

Hero turns ‘Thaatha’

Lover boy Ram is striving for a blockbuster after Ready. Though he has a mass appeal, he is yet to create a class-hero image. His next project Endukante Premanta with Karunakaran is complete and is slated for a summer release. Tamanna plays his lady love and the film’s first look is absolutely stunning. Interestingly, Ram will join hands with Bommarillu Bhaskar. BB’s latest disaster Orange was a bitter experience for everybody and for Ram Charan; it was the biggest blow ever. It was also heard that Bhaskar narrated the same story to hero Karthi and the latter refused it politely. Now that Ram has stepped into the ‘rejected’ project, everybody’s eyes are on it. Will Bhaskar name it Mango?

Like the title Uu Kodathara, Ulikki Padathara (UKUP), the cast and the characters they play too are quite interesting. Nandamuri Balakrishna who is still playing powerful mass masala roles is now testing new waters. He is playing grandfather to Manchu Manoj. Balayya’s getup in the film is said to enthrall one and all and the Thaatha - Manavadu sentiment will set a new trend. UKUP is a 19th century backdrop movie and is studded with socio-fantasy elements. This is already touted to be a big ticket as there are several costly sets erected for the shoot. Each one costs more than six crores rupees. With a biggie in the main role, expensive sets and a powerful story, this one might be a winner!

Item bomb

Raining glamour Rain songs have always been a feast to the eyes for the Telugu audiences. One hot babe who is getting ready with a sizzling number in the rain is Samantha! Srikanth Addala, the director of Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu is said to be exploiting Sam’s oomph. They are currently shooting for a solo rain song in Kutraalam near Tamil Nadu. The place is known for beautiful temples and waterfalls and it is also said to be the favourite place for many directors. Samantha sports a pierced navel and would be drenched completely. Will this song look like Manirathnam’s Chinni Chinni Aasa….?

If rumours are to be believed then chubby faced Richa Gangopadhyay will be an item girl! Not in Tollywood or Kollywood but she would dance her way straight into Bollywood. Prabhu Deva’s Rowdy Rathore, a remake of Vikramarkudu requires an item girl and that slot would be filled in by Richa. She is now shooting for Varadhi opposite Prabhas. This Mirapakai girl will soon start her Bengali debut with a biggie and is quite excited about her first native film. Though she hasn’t confirmed it yet, industry circles say that she has already started shooting for the item song. Just a couple of films in her kitty, is an item number right at this juncture? Well, glamour and skin show rock any day!

Prabhas to pair with Katrina Lawrence to sing a different tune Raghava Lawrence, the multi-tasker is back in action! His latest project Rebel with Prabhas and Tamanna has almost completed the shoot after a few hiccups. Initially, Anuskha was roped in for the heroine’s role but she had issues with Lawrence and walked out. The role eventually went to Tammu. The story, screenplay and direction are being looked after by Lawrence himself and recently, he has donned the cap of a music director too. Thaman who was scoring the music till now has walked out because of the ego clashes with the director. Since nobody else is ready to work, the dancing sensation has taken the responsibility of composing the tunes. All is well but can he do justice to the music department? Jack of all trades, master of none!

It might be surprising but it is true! Prabhas will pair with Bollywood bombshell Katrina Kaif and that too under the direction of movie maverick Shankar. This is going to be a trilingual film in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam and the lead roles would be taken up by Prabhas, Kamal Hassan and Mohanlal respectively. In Telugu, Katrina might play the leading lady’s role and it is heard that the director is in talks with these stars. Interestingly, Jackie Chan will play a pivotal role while A.R. Rahman composes tunes. If these stars sign on the dotted lines, the film will shortly go on floors. Under the direction of Shankar, Prabhas has many chances to catapult his way into the top league. All the best hunk!

KISS AND TELL Kiss - besides expressing love tells a lot many things. This is what the latest creative work by Nistula Hebbar, reiterates. Janaki, the protagonist, is a journalist, who works in the political circuit. Typical to her profession, she is on lookout for a big sensational story. In her personal life, she reminds you of any girl, who is in her late twenties, seeking love and wants to be ‘happy ever after.’

Dream to come true Jr. NTR is Badshah What the Young tiger NTR needs is a blockbuster. After delivering massive duds like Shakti and Oosaravelli, he is no more in demand. In a bid to revive his dying career, he prefers solid stories and talented directors. Once he wraps up the shoot of Boyapati Srinu’s Dammu, he is all set to begin his new project with Srinu Vytla. The film is titled as Badshah. Kajal Agarwal and Amala Paul are being roped in to romance with NTR. This film boasts of the typical Srinu Vytla script and will surely boost Tarak’s career. Producer Ganesh feels that Badshah will be a perfect mix of mass and class elements. Wait and watch! red | march 2012 | 44

What looks like a distant dream for the fans of Kamal Hassan and Rajnikanth, will soon turn into reality! Both these iconic stars will come together for Kamal’s mammoth project Marudhanayagam which has been in the cold storage for almost a decade. The script for this film was penned almost 15 years ago and due to various reasons, it was shelved. Now it is heard that the Universal Hero wants to revive it and film it on a large scale. Superstar Rajnikanth too will be a part of the project and he would be essaying a very important role. Though there isn’t any other official announcement, the film might start its shooting once Rajni wraps up Kochadaiyaan. This would surely be a visual feast!

New games released this season are not short of action; the plot thickens further with an additional package that enhances your Skyrim’s experience.

SKYRIM’S PACK

SHADOWS OF THE DAMNED

Three months since the release of Skyrim, the Elder Scrolls franchise devised an ingenious plan for the large number of gamers addicted to slaying dragons on virtual lands. The Creation Kit allows users to design and develop their own content for ‘The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim.’ The construction pack offered by Bethesda Game Studios is by far the best in additional packs. It comprises the same set of tools used by the developers at Bethesda. It is available to all gamers allowing them to add and expand.

Developed by Grasshopper and released by EA, the game combines the genres of punk rock and psychological thriller with exhilarating visuals to provide an apt background to the thematic game play. Garcia Hotspur’s girlfriend Paula is kidnapped by Demons. Garcia, along with his dimwitted and pervert sidekick Johnson, battles demons to rescue Paula. The storyline is more or less linear and throws a few surprises such as upgrades and collectibles along the way. Adding to the stark contrast, the chiaroscuro visuals set the tone for the latter half of the game, which is filled with anxiety and hell of a lot of demon slaying.

CRACKDOWN 2 Original Crackdown was developed by Realtime Studios, a company responsible for runway hits such as the Grand Theft Auto Series. Instead of a ghetto feel, the new version offers interesting game play that involves agents in urban environments overcoming a range of obstacles around the city. As the game progresses one can benefit from upgrades on skill, agility, inventory like any other open play series. Unlike the Grand Theft Auto games, Crackdown has a minimal storyline. Collecting orbs along the way that aid in increasing your skill levels is surely a growing obsession amongst Xbox enthusiasts.

SOUL CALIBUR V The latest edition surpasses all its predecessors; it combines the new with the old to produce an experience that is simultaneously fresh and intimately familiar. The game is based on the concept of legacies, reflecting a transition from the older generation of Soul Calibur to a newer one. The variety of fighting styles is immense, ranging from the traditional Japanese katana to spell books. The game also boasts improved character creation and the detailed character’s appearance, including height, muscle tone, dimensions, and a plethora of equipment.

SAINTS ROW 3 THQ’s new sequel of the Saint Row series keeps alive the cartoon-like feel of the original. The game is nothing close to realism; the explosions just got bigger so did the loud corny humour. The game has a lot of interesting references to other videogames and popular culture that might stir up some nostalgia in avid gamers. The game allows comprehensive customisation from dressing up your character in some crazy outfits and teaching them to behave or even taunt in a certain way. The sandbox game play allows seamless transition among story missions, sub plots and side mission. This also includes assassinations and grand theft auto. Other activities include providing protection, insurance fraud, escort service, ensuring mayhem and also mob control.

WAR HORSE

S.S. Rajamouli, the master storyteller, will soon be out with his new flick without a ‘superstar’. Touted to be a socio-fantasy comedy, it stars Nani, Samantha and Sudeep in the lead roles. M.M. Keeravani is back with remarkable numbers and according to Rajamouli, the audio is simply out-of-this-world. Eega, a cute love story with some tense moments, is packed with stunning visual effects. Senthil Kumar who won a National Award for his cinematography in Magadheera comes up with eye-catching work. The unit is using a Scorpio Crane for the first time in the history of Telugu cinema. Do we get to watch a Tollywood style Avatar? Hope Rajamouli and his team create magic again!

Steven Spielberg enmeshes aspects that mostly include American history, heroism, childlike wonder and rites of passage into the entertainment. War Horse has a strong cultural resonance. A teenage boy Albert (Jeremy Irvine) trains with the Joey, a thoroughbred horse. They grow to become inseparable friends. But when the harvest fails, Albert’s father decides to sell the horse. The film follows Joey as he pulls across WWI-ravaged Europe in service of one master after another. Albert, who has been temporarily blinded by gas, searches for Joey. The emotional strings inspired by Bresson’s donkey in Au Hasard Balthasar are quite evident in the sincere vignettes that portray the impartiality of nature and the darker side of humanity. As Joey is set to be auctioned off, the third act of the film deals with the journey of Albert, as he tries to get his stallion back.

His last film Jhummandi Naadam bit dust at the boxoffice and this young hero is desperate for a hit. Kriti Karbhanda and Sana Khan play the arm candies for the hero. Kriti’s role was originally written for Shriya Saran but she backed out after a three-day shoot due to price hitch. TERE NAAL LOVE HO GAYA A perfect release after Bollywood’s lovey-dovey couple tied the wedding knot. Genelia looked stunning as usual in her free-spirited tomboy character (Mini), the daughter of a Canadian businessman Bhatti (Tinu Anand). Riteish (Viren), is a perfect match for her. Perhaps the real life love worked for an amazing reel life chemistry. The villain father, Bhatti, wants Mini to marry a rich guy of his choice. To escape the marriage, she stages a kidnap, involving Viren and runs away with him. Eventually, they fall in love but the faked kidnap leads to an unexpected climax. Somehow the humour keeps you hooked to it, though at times it appears forced. SachinJigar's musical score is pleasant. Thanks to the choreographer, after a long time the beauty of rural India came to fore. Overall a refreshing flick, worth a watch especially for Riteish and Genelia.

MONEY BALL

Based on a true story, Moneyball provides a fascinating insight into the cut-throat competition in major league baseball and the challenges involved in running a team. In one of his finest performances, Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane, a 44-year old general manager of Oakland Athletics (or A’s) and the man behind selecting the ‘A’ team. Billy, a failed player for the New York Mets disregards conventional wisdom of the sport and aims to reinvent it. After a string of losses, Beane befriends the bespectacled adviser of Cleveland Indians (Johan Hill). Running on a tight budget, Beane and Hill recruit discounted players. For Oakland A’s it’s more than baseball, it is a revolution and Beane is in the centre of the controversy - one that challenges old school traditions. Moneyball does well in portraying and bringing together age old elements of values and business of the sport.

fter a short stint with the Telugu and Malayalam movies, long-legged beauty Parvati Melton appeared to have faded into oblivion. Surprisingly, in spite of standing at number 40 in the Most Desirable Women’s list and delivering a couple of hits, she still couldn’t get into the big league. But this Vennela girl shot to limelight again with her Poovai Poovai moves in Dookudu. Now, she is simply unstoppable. H Congrats for the success of your item song! Thank you so much! Even I am really excited. How did you bag the role in Vennela? I have always been fascinated by cinema. I started dancing and performing at the age of 5. I won various beauty pageants, and modelling competitions.

That was when I was spotted and called for an audition by the Vennela team. I cleared the audition and got the ticket to Tollywood. You were typecast in Madhumasam. What made you accept such a role? I usually focus on the people I would be collaborating with. The director, the production house and my role must be good too. Though Madhumasam was different, I accepted the role because of Chandra Siddharth. That film brought me laurels. How the experience of working with Vishnu in Game? After Vennela, my parents took me back to the US and I rejoined school. I begged my family to let me pursue a career in cinema.

They gave a green signal for Game. I returned to India after nearly seven months. I really enjoyed working with Mohan Babu garu and Vishnu.

Mahesh Babu, Srinu Vaitla and 14 Reels Entertainment. I am fortunate to have returned to the industry through such a successful film.

avan Kalyan’s Jalsa,, the How did Pavan biggest hit in your career happen? I was approached by director Trivikram Srinivas and he convinced T me to do the role. Initially, I was very apprehensive, but I decided to take the plunge. Fortunately it clicked.

How did Poovai Poovai happen? What a perfect way to say I am back. That was what I felt when Srinu Vaitla garu and the producers approached me. Wasn’t doing a special song at this point of the career a risk? I think item numbers can spice up a film. Being an actress in Indian cinema means being a performer and sometimes even a small but critical performance can provide tremendous entertainment value to fans. Why not make a special appearance and entertain my fans. What is interesting is that many biggies in Hollywood and Bollywood are also open to ‘item’ songs. I don’t believe it was a bold step. In the world of acting, there are no rules and guidelines.

You are Tollywood’s Tollywood’s new item girl! You How is it being called so? It’s really exciting! Dookudu offered me the opportunity to do something I hadn’t done before. I am glad I did that song. It was especially wonderful working with an amazing team, including

Are you open to more item songs? On an average, each film has 4 - 5 songs which require performance. For me it’s an honour if I am approached to enhance and add extra value to the film. You accepted the song for Mahesh Babu or was there a different reason? Not just for Mahesh but I did the song for the entire team. The song was also very catchy.

Cover Shoot: Venky, Photriya Cover Story: Kalyani Rajasekar

Glamour or performance oriented roles? I am more interested in the quality of the roles. Though glamour works, it doesn’t last. Whatever I do, people must receive it well. Born and brought up in the US. Didn’t you have difficulty with the expressions and dialogues? I grew up there and my mother is a Punjabi and father a German. But I am very accustomed to the Indian culture. Adapting to this field definitely took some time and effort as combining expressions and body language, besides memorising dialogues can be quite a task. But my hard work and dedication are paying off. You are a trained Bharatanatyam dancer which is poles apart from movie dances. Is it an asset or a liability? The amazing thing about dancing is that it is something you do for your own catharsis as well as for others’ red | march 2012 | 52

enjoyment. Dance taught me to be disciplined. I am able to grasp many subtle movements easily, thanks to my earlier training in Bharatanatyam. Hello in Malayalam was a blockbuster. Why can’t you take up such films and continue working in various languages? My main focus has been Telugu as it is this industry that has discovered me. However, as an artiste I am always open to new opportunities in other languages. In spite of being immensely talented, why do you think you were behind the others? Acting is a performing art therefore I don't see it as a race. Some bloom sooner and some later. That doesn't mean they are any better or worse. My career certainly has been a rollercoaster ride. But whose journey hasn't been? We all must climb the mountain to reach the top. That doesn't happen overnight. Everyone’s journey is different. Why did you have to disappear from Tollywood all of a sudden? Post the success of Jalsa I had to return to the US due to a family emergency. I decided to take time off so that I could be there for my baby sister and mom. I chose my duty as a daughter and sister over my career. At home I took on various modelling assignments for international brands and magazines. On my return to India I even did the Lakme India Fashion week. I did what I ought to do. Future projects I would be seen in Balakrishna’s Srimannarayana directed by Ravi Chavali, Sairam Shankar’s film with Jithendra, and Jagapati Babu’s flick with Eswar.

MAHINDRA XUV 500

The turbo kicks in to compensate lag and the engine pulls through effortlessly. With the sweet turbo whistle, the engine can accelerate with ease and cruise at three-digit speed. The XUV’s lightweight body also boosts fuel economy; a healthy 15.1 kmpl makes it the most economical vehicle in this segment.

From the stable of M&M, the XUV 500 is a rare combination of unbelievable pricing, powerful diesel- drive train and advanced features. It is a quantum leap as far as Indian automobile manufacturing sector is concerned. The XUV 500 is an SUV that employs a car-like monocogue chassis that is both lighter and stronger. Under the hood The XUV is equipped with a 2.2-litre mHawk engine and a variable geometry turbocharger in league with its predecessor, the Scorpio. The diagonally placed 5th generation mHawk engine delivers more power and impressive torque - 140bhp and 33.33Nm respectively. Mahindra offers two versions - a front-wheel and all-wheel drive variant. The mHawk engine, infamous for the initial drive of the Scorpio is tweaked further for a strong mid-range power.

Ride and handling The XUV is a luxury saloon with MacPherson suspensions upfront and multi-linked independent suspension at the rear. The XUV has a lower centre of gravity and longer wheelbase that makes one feel secure. The 4-wheel drive variant detects wheel spin (enables traction control) and offers suitable torque for better grip. However, the XUV is no mean offroader and lacks low range transfer. Style and substance Unlike the odd tall boy design of the Scorpio, the stance of the car is bold, with muscular wheel arches and jaw like honeycomb grille that accentuates the look. The long wheelbase with a tapering roof makes it look dynamic and modern, much like the Mitsubishi Outlander. The distinct paw like door handles and roof rails, neatly taper down to an elegant pair of tail lamps and dual exhausts. The XUV is available in seven refreshing colours. On the inside The robust interiors are well textured and finished in signature elegance. Blending both the conventional and

modern styles, the interiors have concealed lounge lighting, cushy two-tone leather decor and a fully loaded navigation system. The three rows of seating can easily slide to make extra space. The steering wheel offers tilt and telescopic adjustments and encompasses a range of controls such as answering phone calls, toggling music or cruise control the car to ‘auto-pilot’ mode. Regular features like a/v parking sensors, air-conditioner vents for all three rows, Bluetooth connectivity and a 6-inch LCD touch-screen system with satellite navigation are available. The top-end version allows voice commands for the audio system and safety features such as six airbags (front, side and curtain). True value Mahindra takes a huge leap forward with its latest, the XUV500. Competitively priced, the two wheel drive W6 starts at Rs. 10.8 lakh and Rs. 11.9 lakh for top end model. The W8 four wheel-drive version begins at Rs 12.88 lakh. With an unbelievable pricing, advanced feature list and a ripping diesel engine, we can say that Mahindra Motors will rule the roost in the coming years.

HYUNDAI SONATA Much like most of the recent Hyundai cars, the all new Sonata adopts a fluid design, featuring swoopy lined contour with head and tail lamps that stretch well onto the cars sides. The large chrome grille exudes elegance as well as a neat aggressive stance. This newer version embodies ample curves in comparison to its sleek predecessor and the result is an improved and better looking coupe. The 17-inch rims with beautifully trimmed arches will surely be the owner’s pride. The heavily sculpted interiors are packed with the finest equipment like well-ventilated leather seats, a six-CD changer, push-button keyless start and a fully adjustable automated driver’s seat. Hyundai employs all the major features of the Verna and additionally the Sonata boasts of six airbags, parking sensors on the rearview camera, ABS and ESP. The six-speed automatic gearbox with paddle-shifters is powered by a 2.4litre GDI petrol engine that produces 25.5kgm of torque at 4250rpm and a class-leading 198bhp at 6300rpm. visit to Vizag is not considered complete without a stroll on the beach, trek to Kailashgiri and a meal in Hotel Daspalla. The hotel’s name is so inextricably entwined with that of the city that when it opened its 4-star facility in Hyderabad two years ago people were eager to find out if that was the actual offshoot of Visakha Daspalla. The shrewd brain behind this enduring edifice of hospitality is its Managing Director Mr. M. Raghavendra Rao. His

'open-door' style of leadership is evident from the free access his staff and guests gain to his see-through glass cabin. The irrefutable professional triumph notwithstanding, he remains an unassuming man of few words. The initial conversation stumbles, blocked by Mr. Rao’s natural modesty. But once his passion the hotel - comes into focus, he is at his expressive best and V. Sarada captures his zeal. L

Hailing from an agricultural family from Krishna district, the then 17-year-old Rao chose hospitality as his life’s mission. Without glorifying the motive, Mr. Rao attributes it to his “lack of interest in academics.” He opened his first restaurant Navayuga in Tenali and later chose Guntur for his Geetha Café. Why did he gift Vizag with his cherished Daspalla? Mr. Rao quips, “Because it is the most happening

“We opened Daspalla in 1987 with 72 rooms, two restaurants and two conference halls. Now it houses 126 rooms, four restaurants and five conference halls. In all our city restaurants put together, we serve 2,000 guests per day and maintain 80 per cent occupancy rate in the hotel. However, we get our mega bucks from banqueting,” he explains. “While our target is the middle class, our emphasis is on fine facilities,

We ensure that our guests receive a uniquely Andhra warmth and welcome. Nearly 75% of feedback is applause. Of course, we have our share of a few brickbats too, which I take as eyeopeners that help us serve better.” To complement the mushrooming rivals, Mr. Rao frequently revitalises his restaurants. “We are savvy enough to know that global cuisine is the flavour of the day.” “Earlier, we used to have the customer eating out of our hands. Today’s customer is widely travelled, educated and demanding. Now he calls the shots while we take the orders,” he rejoins with an intended pun. Does he think that his hotel, where many dignitaries opt to stay, has changed Vizag from bleak to sleek? “Not solely. Any way it’s our privilege to be a part of the city’s progress.” Admitting that there is enough room for the existing hotels for now, Mr. Rao suggests that the region’s tourism had to be developed in a big way to accommodate more players. Mr. Rao finds no hurdle insurmountable, not even staff crunch as he enjoys the support of at least 200 loyalists.

Photo shoot by Dhana Vijay

What comes across loud and clear is that Mr. Rao can successfully tackle any aspect of the industry. But he is left a bit stumped when asked to list out his greatest achievements. “Guess the number of important people I've shaken hands with. Here every dawn breaks into a new beginning,” says he with a contented smile.

ou loaf, laugh, loosen and lighten up here. It is the very space where you spent the best moments of your life with family and friends- your living room. Why not add a little style to it? The season promotes four shades - red, shocking pink, mauve, and grey. Ranita Ray suggests ways to pep up this place by splashing some pretty polychromes while interior designer Bina illustrates how to play with colours with an accent wall, cushions, rugs, artifacts and other accessories. D

red | march 2012 | 67

Curtains & Carpets

Cushions, Throw Pillows & Upholstery

For curtains take clues from the dĂŠcor of the room. For example, if the room is grey-red, curtains with grey-base and red floral or abstract prints would just be perfect. A plain colour in either of the shades can also accentuate the decoration. This red-white-grey combo room provides a soothing ambience. While red is dominating the look; the soft grey curtains reflect subtlety.

Splashing colour appears to be the theme of this room. No hue seems to be left untouched here. Even a dull grey room can be made vibrant using bright coloured cushions and throw pillows. Pump in some charm with versi coloured ones and give an elegant makeover. Don’t forget that upholstery of the sofas and couches too makes a perceptible difference to the room. Take special care in making them equally colourful and attractive.

For rugs, follow the contrasting colours. If the walls are dark; neutralise them with light shaded rugs and vice versa. Similarly, if you want to add colour to your space, spread a carpet of any dark shade.

red | march 2012 | 68

Accessories Use a large monochrome or parti-coloured vase to test a new shade in your room. If it suits, add some more in different shades, sizes and shapes. Make dull walls interesting by hanging a large piece of artwork like a painting or long stretched canvas. Like in this living space, pink hues are suffused with two pink paintings. Even those two small vases complement the dĂŠcor. Placing natural or artificial flowers is a simple way to splash colours. Even a tall indoor plant can enhance the space. A variegated serving tray or a multihued ottoman on the coffee table can add drama.

Lighting Lights can make your drab looking living space fun, fresh and funky too. Although the yellow illumination seems to be always in vogue, one can experiment with purple, but certainly not blue. If possible, try going for indirect or diffused lighting. Install lights on the false roof or walls. Take hints from this urbane living room where the lighting is in perfect harmony with the dĂŠcor. The indirect illumination is muffling the space, giving a subtle yellow glow. Alternatively, classy lampshades (in different hues as per colour preference), corner lights, accent or focus lights (to highlight paintings or posters) can also light up the space. If you have small niches on the walls, deck them up with artifacts and what else? Let there be light!

Wall

Remember

Wall gets the major attention in any room. One of the easiest ways to infuse colour is to paint it the way you want. Go with the trend by painting or using colourful wallpapers only on one of the four walls.

Dark colour suits only huge rooms. If you have space constraint, then go only with light pastel shades to make it look spacious.

This contemporary hall here aptly follows this rule. Part of the front wall is painted in blue, which complements the blue sofa, balancing minimalistic decoration of the space. red | march 2012 | 69

Instead of uniform application of a single colour, a colourcombo always works better, like shocking pink-white, black-red or grey-mauve, etc. D

rom wooing a sulking beloved to adding glamour or defining the luxury quotientdiamonds can simply do wonders. Little known to many of their admirers is the fact that diamonds also come in a variety of colours, apart from its popular transparent form (with no hue). These coloured stunners are uber expensive, yet quite coveted, thanks to their rarity and natural beauty. Ranita Ray is here with a rich collection of tinted allotropes of carbon that make your heart skip a beat. Of the four criteria (colour, clarity, cut and carats), colour emerges as the most important and has an interesting angle too. That tiny variation in colour can either push up or diminish the value of the stone. The darker the gem is higher the value. However, in case of white diamonds, a tinge of colour is considered as an imperfection. Now for the dazzling details. R

01 Pretty Pink: A majority of these pink diamonds comes from the Argyle mine. This colliery is always in demand because of its rich produce of light pink and deep raspberry shaded diamonds. White ones with a secondary pink colour too are found here and they cost a bomb when compared to the solid pink ones. However, diamonds from the other parts of the world are mildly tinted and less expensive.

02 Bold Blue: Remember that stunning pendant which Rose (Kate Winslet) flaunted in Titanic? From a lighter blue - as soft as the clear sky after rains, to darker ones as intense as the evening sky and even deeper shades like a sapphire, there’s a superfluity of colours. Akin to its counterparts, the blue ones also come at a stunning price. The large 45.52-carat deep blue diamond is the rarest creation of nature and is popularly known as ‘Hope Diamond.’ It is believed to be a product of Golconda region of our state.

03 Eternal Yellow: Let your trinket shine with bright yellow diamonds! The Argyle mine that produces pink diamonds also produces yellow ones that range from a pale yellow to a deep rich golden canary yellow. These hues can be achieved through a chemical process. A velvety black evening gown can be best paired with a platinum neckpiece studded with vibrant yellow diamonds.

red | march 2012 | 71

04 Gorgeous Green: Are you looking for an alternative for emerald to up your style quotient? Then here is your chance. Only a few mines in the world produce these exclusive beauties. Pure ones are pretty unusual and barely one new straight intense (vivid) green diamond comes to the market once a year. Usually most of the green diamonds have a yellowish hue. They are also found in light, very light, fancy, fancy light, fancy bluish, fancy dark grayish and fancy yellowish green hues.

CUT ABOVE THE COLOURLESS

05 Ravishing Red: Even our history stands testimony to how the alluring charm of the Koh-i-noor persuaded many Kings to wage wars just to possess the red diamond. Only master diamantaires can handle these exquisite stones. They are always in demand despite their skyrocketing prices. These gemstones are also found in combinations of brown-red, pink-red and purple-red.

06 Beautiful Black: Adorn your neck with a swanky necklace gilded with chunky black diamonds that render a dramatic and chic look. These gemstones have a polycrystalline structure that absorbs light. That is why; most of the black diamonds are not radiant but they surely are stylish. These are relatively cheaper. They can definitely add elegance when paired with white or any other complementing coloured diamonds.

07 Ornate Orange: Get an ocher glow with the exotic orange diamonds. Their rarity not only makes them expensive but also highly desirable. According to statistics, only 1 out of 66 of the largest 100 diamonds is orange. These too primarily come from the Argyle mines in Australia and South Africa. Generally they come in seven graduating shades but fancy vivid and fancy deep are the most desired hues among all.

08 Plush Purple: Another shade of diamonds that is equally unique, expensive and royal is purple. With no other secondary hue, it is truly exotic and an eye candy for jewellers. Majority of these stones come from rough diamond mines in Brazil and Argyle. They come in wide colour variations and when tinged with fancy pink or blue, they look all the more spectacular. Wellness

recent health survey stated that India is the world’s diabetes capital. This high incidence is mainly because of factors like stress, sedentary lifestyle, obesity and lack of physical activity. Diabetes Mellitus, an insulin disorder, doesn’t spare any gender or age. What many of us don’t know is that diabetes can be prevented! Kalyani Rajashekar talks to Dr. K A V Subramanyam, Vizag’s leading endocrinologist, and throws light on this malady and ways to control it. How prevalent is diabetes in our city? If India is the world’s diabetes capital, Vizag is our state’s capital, recording the maximum number of cases. Way back in 2001, every week, 50 people used to come up with diabetes. But now, I attend to almost 500 people a week. More worrisome is that majority of my patients are aged between 20 and 30.

What are the factors contributing to it? Having carbonated drinks and junk food are today’s fads. Children are fed burgers, sandwiches, cakes and other stuff that makes them obese. Lack of physical activity and a sedentary lifestyle aggravate the problem.

remedy

What about the complications? Diabetes is known as a silent killer because you can never recognise the symptoms. Frequent urination, thirst, sweating and hunger pangs are quite common for everybody. It is tough to detect the disease and the complications are innumerable. It can affect the eyes, liver, kidneys, heart and the brain. People with high blood sugar levels are prone to heart attacks and brain strokes. The eyes can be affected by glaucoma. Importantly, diabetic people must stay away from physical injuries. Wounds can worsen diabetes.

How do we prevent or control diabetes? Good eating habits and regular exercise are the only saviours. Using a small plate and serving tiny portions of food will help you eat less. Stop eating leftover food. Remember your tummy isn’t a trash can. Eat what is available to you and what you are accustomed to. Taking your age, weight, height, gender, physical activity and lifestyle into consideration, you must plan your meals. Just because some diet worked for another person, don’t assume it would work for you too. Stay away from alcohol and smoking. They only upset your body metabolism. Alcohol especially can cause an imbalance in your insulin levels.

DON’TS

Dr. K A V Subrahmanyam MD, DM DO’S

1.

Never skip meals or medicines

2.

Herbs and spices contain good amounts of sodium which can be unhealthy for you. Follow a bland diet at least twice a week

3.

Stay away from oily, baked and fried foods

4.

Don’t swallow food without chewing. Masticate it properly so that it digests easily

5.

Avoid potatoes, rice, bananas, sweets, carrots and bread. Their glycemic indices are pretty high and can worsen diabetes

6.

If you are exercising, always wear proper shoes and socks to cover your legs. Physical injuries might bring complications.

1.

Eat food at fixed hours. Advancing or extending the timings can upset the blood sugar levels

2.

Include fresh vegetable salads in your meals

3.

Have a piece of raw onion every day

4.

Drink a lot of water to flush out your body toxins

5.

Switch to herbal tea

6.

Substitute natural sugar with honey

7.

7.

Try turning into a vegetarian. Mutton and chicken add weight to your body

Don’t use artificial sweeteners. In fact, they cause a shoot up in your sugar levels.

8.

8.

Karela (bitter gourd / kakarakaya), fenugreek seeds (methi), garlic, onion, cinnamon (lavang) and wheat are excellent foods that fight diabetes

Curtail your salt intake. Diabetes can put you at an increased risk for hypertension and excessive sodium levels can aggravate things

9.

9.

Check your body weight from time to time. Shed extra flab through exercise

Carbonated drinks will never work for diabetics. As an alternative you can add little lime to plain soda and have it twice or thrice a week

10. Sleep well

10. Avoid sitting in hot water tubs or saunas immediately after exercising. Cool off for a bit and then have a hot shower red| february | march 2012 | 78 red

ealthy hair is a matter of pride. Hair loss, dandruff and grey hair can be really embarrassing and may cause huge drop in your confidence levels. People with a weak scalp and hair would want miracle treatments that keep their hair healthy and clean. Such miracle cures do exist and here’s a compilation of such economical, fast and permanent ways to flaunt healthy locks. They work extremely well, provided you follow them religiously!

1.

Harsh chemicals can cause inflammation and make your hair weak. Always use gentle shampoos and conditioners that keep your scalp soft.

2.

Avoid dyeing, curling, drying and ironing your hair. Subjecting the scalp and the hair follicles to such treatments can lead to serious problems. Prefer using natural ingredients to colour the hair.

3.

Wash your hair at least thrice a week. Massage the scalp with oil and rinse it off slowly using a mild shampoo. Using rosemary oil in an olive oil base promotes hair growth.

4.

Discard the chemical rich oils and shampoos and welcome the organic products that do good to your tresses. Stick to ayurvedic preparations that aid in the natural growth of your hair.

5.

Ensure that you follow a balanced diet every day. Your food should consist of Vitamins A, B and C that retain natural hair colour and support hair follicles. Include a lot of green leafy vegetables, eggs, cereals, bread and milk in your diet.

6.

Almonds and gooseberries (amla) are excellent sources of iron, Vitamins C and E. Consuming them on a daily basis puts a check on hairloss and strengthens the follicles.

7.

One-fourth of the weight of a strand of a hair is made up of water. Drinking water regularly during the day can make your hair silky and shiny.

8.

9.

10.

11.

12.

13. 14.

Limit your caffeine intake. If you are a coffee addict, there would be a deficiency of vitamins and that in turn makes your hair lifeless. Drinking and smoking too can have drastic effects on your hair. Alcohol especially reduces the levels of folic acid, zinc and vitamins B and C. Your scalp becomes bald within no time. High stress levels are the major culprits behind hairloss and hair greying. Practise meditation to relieve yourself from anxiety and pressure. Regular yoga or aerobics can help you beat stress. Always keep your hair short. Long hair usually pressurises the scalp and leads to hair loss. Shorter hair is light and easier to clean. Women who braid their hair tightly tend to lose many strands in just one round of brushing. Keep your braid lightly loose and allow it to relax. Never wash your hair with very hot or cold water. Finally, visit your trichologist regularly and keep a tab on the health of your hair. Neglecting problems can only worsen the situation.

Conditioners for glossy hair Egg

Massaging egg white (without the yolk) can work wonders on your hair. Since egg is a good source of protein, it keeps the follicles healthy.

Aloe-Vera

A mix of Aloe-Vera and coconut milk can make hair look supple. Apply the mix evenly on the scalp and massage slowly.

Beer

Beer acts as a very good conditioner for your hair. Apply it for 15 minutes and wash it off.

Milk

Take some milk (preferably cold). Apply it with a brush and comb it gently. Wait for 30 minutes and lightly wash your hair. Do not use any conditioner.

Vinegar

Mix a little vinegar in warm water and rinse your hair with this solution.

Menthulu

Soak two teaspoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Grind the seeds and apply the paste to your hair like shampoo. Wash it off after 10 mins.

Coconut

Take coconut, curry leaves and egg white, grind them with water and filter. Apply this liquid to your scalp. Leave it for half an hour and wash it with herbal shampoo.

HOLISTIC FEAST UGADI PACHCHADI Eating Ugadi Pachchadi is one tradition that every Telugu family follows and this dish symbolises the life and its nuance variation. This low calorie recipe acts as a prophylactic and cleanses the digestive system.

Ingredients Neem flowers - 2 tsp Ripe banana (cut) - 1cup Raw mango (finely chopped) - 1 cup Coconut (finely chopped) - 1 cup Tamarind paste - 2 tsp Jaggery (crushed) - 4 tsp Red chilli powder - ½ tsp Salt to taste

Method Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Don’t mash the neem flowers because they might make the pachadi very bitter. Tamarind paste forms the base in which the rest of the ingredients are added. If you prefer it to be thin, you can add a little water. You can also add tiny pieces of sugarcane. But ensure that all the six flavours (shadruchulu) go into the making of Ugadi pachchadi.

MANOJ’S VISION: GLOBAL PRESENCE BY 2020

Taking a modest company and transforming it into a dynamic conglomerate in just two decades is no mean achievement. Manoj Kumar Grandhi, by sheer determination, perseverance and foresight has made this possible. And now, there’s no stopping Vaibhav Empire.

LANDMARKS 1994 - Manoj Kumar Grandhi - the man with a blend of old school of tradition and keen sense for modern management stepped into his ancestral business. 1995 - Manoj extended his dream vision “Vaibhav Jewellers” to Visakhapatnam, with the help of his father. 2003 - Manoj’s vision was to channel the success of forefathers’ textile business into second generation by the incorporation of “Vaibhav Empire”. The Vaibhav group has become one of the Visakhapatnam’s largest leading and preferred retail Jewellers and emerged as Vaibhav Empire Private Limited. 2004 - Vaibhav Empire Private Limited an emerging corporate has taken over M/s Vaibhav Jewellers. 2007 - The group launched India’s Largest ISO certified Jewellery showroom Vaibhav Jewellers in association with clothing emporium Kankatala, under one roof of more than 1.06 lakhs sq. ft. area “V SQUARE.”

DREAM TO CONTINUE As the first phase of Vaibhav’s onward march, the projects, on various stages of completion, are in the following locations. Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

Vijayawada Guntur Rajahmundry Kakinada Srikakulam Vizianagaram Gajuwaka Hyderabad Bangalore Chennai

Each rectangle represent a mat (Tatami) which can be of different size. In the grid below you must fill each Tatami with numbers ranging from 1 to 3.

Each number can appear only once.

In one row or coloumn each number must appear the same number of times. You should have two 1s, two 2s and two 3s in each row and coloumn.

You can’t have two identical numbers touching horizontally or vertically.

The goal is to place triangles in some cells in the end generating a pattern similar to a quilt. The numbered tiles tell you how many triangles share an edge with it, horizontally and vertically. For example, if a tile says four, it has triangle all around it. If a tile says one, it has only one triangle somewhere. Some tiles may remain blank and will form, along with the triangles, rectangles, and squares. Some other tiles are filled but contain no number. These are the only tiles that can be completely filled. Rectangles or squares can’t touch orthogonally, but can touch diagonally.

Once you get them all mail us at mail@redmagazine.in or post it on our facebook page to win exciting prizes from red.
