PUBLISHER’S NOTE
The state is split and is under Presidents’ rule. People who till recently fought a losing battle against bifurcation have now turned their attention to the issues of state capital and packages. Prominent persons including leading entrepreneurs of Vizag have organised themselves into a pressure group to demand capital status for the city, citing many good reasons to do so. We keep our fingers crossed and wait for the verdict. Whatever may be the situation, we just cannot ignore the International Women’s Day or our prime duty to salute all those women who play a stellar role in various fields. Hence we choose Dr. D. Purandeswari for our Life segment. She is an acclaimed Parliamentarian and erudite scholar. But how many of us know that she is an excellent homemaker? We find out the less known facts about this lady who is much more than NTR’s daughter. Actor Pranitha Subhash shot into fame playing the second lead in Pawan Kalyan’s blockbuster Atharintiki Daredi. But she soon climbed the ladder to be the leading lady in Pandavulu Pandavulu Tummeda. Our Haute camera pans on this Kannada beauty. Pedada Ramani, wife of a Merchant Navy officer sailed into public life with a set goal of rendering service to the underprivileged. One led to the other, she is now anchored in politics. Dr. Anuradha Reddy is a dietician, wellness expert, author and above all a humanist who lends a helping hand to the needy. Our Eve highlights these two women and their life missions. This time our GenX turns out to be all about aesthetics. Out of the two experts we introduce, one takes care of the basic looks while the other teaches how to complement them with best dresses. Renowned Orthodontist Dr. Rajesh Kumar Y. not only brings smiles on thousands of faces, but also carefully chisels and carves facial bones to make those smiles perfect. He has set many records by bringing the latest innovations and infrastructure to Vizag. Prashant Agarwal has brought in high-end fashion to Hyderabad and taught the men that they need not leave the stage of fashion to women. He sets new norms in men’s dressing. What all those men with panache have to do is to just leave themselves in his safe hands. We have some breathtakingly beautiful creations of ace jewellery designer Suhani Pittie on our Dazzle showcase. Feast your eyes. Word feast certainly brings to mind the spread of another kind. Giving shape to those images, we have Executive Chef of Four Points by Sheraton sharing some delectable recipes in the Cuisine. Retreat takes you to Rishikesh, where you can go to refresh both body and soul. That sums up the roundedness of this month’s fare. Wish You Happy reading and Happy Holi and Ugadi.

“First and foremost I would like to say a huge heart felt "thank you" to Mr. Vani Prabhakar, Nihar and Ramya for the wedding decor. My sister Jaya and I are extremely happy and are in awe of the majestic Mandap and the beautiful Sangeeth/Pelli Koothuru decoration. During the events, I was occupied with other wedding arrangements and could not appreciate and enjoy the decor myself - I guess this happens to everyone who is into organizing things for the wedding. But now looking back at the pictures, the grandeur and the attention to detail given to the decor is beyond what I had expected. Jaya and I thank you once again for making it very very special for the family and taking care of all my requests for the decor. Your professionalism came through during the hard time and you delivered an amazing mandap, it was unique and special, and these words probably don’t do justice. I will be more than happy to serve as a reference for any of your NRI or other clients. Thank you again for taking the responsibility of the wedding decor as your own. www.estiqueevents.com

V I Z A G RITZY RIDERS They are rich, smart, classy and undoubtedly swift! Owning superbikes priced above Rs. 10, 00,000 is no joke. The more zeroes add to it, the bigger the hero is! The city is witnessing the rise of such vrooming heroes who can be called superbikers. Late night long rides or weekend trips are just a small part of wild activities of this group of biggies of the town. However, this also facilitates a few others to get into this group, who just need to buy such uber expensive machines to rub shoulders with head honchos. They do have their own page on FB on which the group shares pictures, videos, posts pleasing their adrenaline rush. Speed thrills but kills, is a norm written large at every nook and corner of the city. The bulging number of accidents shows the message is not being taken too seriously. It is better the racing remains a sport and is not brought on to the roads endangering the lives of both the rider and the commuters. NARESH’S NEW NARA He slipped into oblivion (or at least it looked like that) following his ‘futile’ fight for united Andhra Pradesh. Invincible as is he is, Symbiosis O. Naresh Kumar once again resurfaced, this time with a different cause. Post-bifurcation, he in the capacity as the vice-president of Vizag Development Council (VDC), is demanding the authorities concerned to make Vizag capital of Seemandhra. He joined hands with CII, and Vizagpatam Chamber of Commerce & Industries (VCCI) to press for his demand and brought likeminded people on one platform for the cause. Naresh has never made bones about his love for the city and he spares no efforts when it comes to the development of the city. He, quite understandably, says that Vizag has all the prerequisites of an ideal capital as it is much ahead in development compared to the other towns in residual State of Andhra Pradesh. Whereas others in the residual state feel that the place is not centrally located and it is difficult for the leaders of the other districts to attend the Assembly sessions if it is made capital. Time only has to reveal whether he would succeed in his endeavour this time at least.
PRABHA - THE RISING STAR Vexed with ill treatment meted out to women workers by the District YSRCP perhaps, Prabha Goud, founder of Prabha Charitable Trust took refuge in Congress which is unrolling a wide red carpet to all those who wish to jump on its bandwagon. As the maxim - Well begun is half done - goes, Prabha seems to have already in the thick of the party’s welfare activities. She seems to be making all out efforts to give boost to the sagging reputation of the party. One cannot but wonder how a newcomer from the rival party could learn the ropes so soon and create a niche for herself in the party circles. It only goes to prove the efficiency and adaptability of the lady. The locals have already recognized her as a potential leader and she is sure to give her male rivals a run for their money.
SAVOURING SUCCESS Being among 40 food personalities on The Times Group’s “Celebrated Chefs of India”, on BBC Good Homes Indian edition, featured on the “Foodie Show” on Times TV and CNBC Awaaz, Srinath Sambandan is omnipresent. With his 16 years of wide experience in various star hotels and cruises, he has been satiating the taste buds of guests as the Executive Chef of the Park Hotel. His menu at the Bamboo Bay restaurant has earned it a spot in the 2010 book, Eating Out in India: 101 Favourite Restaurants. Recently, he was invited to showcase an Epicurean Regional Indian Menu at “Gourmet Abu Dhabi” hosted by Peter Knipp Holdings. He shared the space with celebrity chefs from around the world. Srinath hosted Promotions at Ushna, Souk Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi. Geniuses can shine in any field and create amazing records! Isn’t it?
BOLD BUT NOT BEAUTIFUL Bikini and babes, the combination is something we identify with Goa. Touted as the Goa of Eastern India, Vizag seems to have taken this tag seriously of late. While spotting a bikini-clad beauty sunbathing by the beach is still a distant dream, some such divas were seen in the heart of the city recently. Thanks to one of the star hotels of the city that had hosted a pool party. Besides the music, aqua fun, food and beverages, there were female revellers who were spotted in pretty bold swimwear. This turned out to be the major attraction and talk of the town. Best part was that they were absolutely cool about it and were engrossed enjoying the pool fun and even posed for pictures. These bold damsels shedding inhibitions seemed to have jolted Vizag, the sleepy city, out of its slumber and left the Vizagites wideeyed. Isn’t it too bold for the city that is considered to be traditional and rather old fashioned?
WILL THE SON RISE? Tollywood is soon going to have another son of a political leader as a reel hero - the son of politician Ganta Srinivas Rao - Ravi Teja. Ravi has gone through a total makeover. From taking acting lessons from guru Satyanand to fitness classes from Chiranjeevi, Ravi went through all necessary acts. Meanwhile, Ganta seems to be going through a tough time owing to the state bifurcation. As per the earlier schedule the film is to be shot and released by May, much before the elections. But the new political developments seem to have cast shadows on Ravi’s reel career and there are apprehensions if the project will take off at all.
NOT HOT FOR SURE! Do you call yourself a P3 name? Now getting these tags is just a click away. All that you have to do is to get yourself photographed and post them on the FB page Hottest P3 of Vizag. Launched recently, it has created a hullaballoo among Vizagites. The page is getting flooded with pictures too. However, often the pictures posted are of poor quality, making it obvious that there is no quality control. There are people who look it as spam and are questioning its utility. Pointing at its efficacy there are many questions raised. Some even asked, “Does Vizag really need such a page?” The city lacks no talents and so why not have a page which gives them a face and recognition. Some feel such drives should also carry a social message that could help the society at large.
AAP IS JUST A SAP HERE Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) opened shop in the city. But the broom boom seemed to be only for a few days as the membership drive did not really take off in the city that accounts for urban, middle class and young voters, the target groups of AAM. Around 1,000 persons were enrolled in the first flush of enthusiasm but the euphoria faded away. Studies reveal that the middle class prefers conventional parties to the newcomers. There is a clear divide between the North and South as far as political tastes are concerned. Here political battles are fought purely on the basis of caste and cash.

NARASIMHAN ON THE ROLL The state has gone under the President’s rule. None could be happier than Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan who was all for it. The Governor has been more pro-active than the successive chief ministers. He has been more approachable than the ministers, besides being a conduit between the state and the Centre. Sonia Gandhi too prefers as she can rule the state through her loyalist. Congress also feels it can push its own agenda this way. The power-mongering Governor’s longcherished dream has come true with the bureaucracy is under his thumb. It is no wonder even the top brass of the state is making a beeline to Raj Bhawan. In a nutshell it is the one man show of the Guv till the new government is formed.
PEPPER LOSES ZING ‘Pepper spray MP’, as he is being called of late, former MP Lagadapati Rajgopal had created a history in Parliament and became (in) famous overnight. He strove hard to keep the state together. His attempts, though did not fructify, cannot be undermined. His was the loudest and clearest of all the voices raised against the state bifurcation. Rajgopal, perhaps was the only politician who vowed that he would quit his post and the party and even politics if Parliament passed the Bill. But it looks like this is one vow which is hard to keep. Politics is like a vice. Once a person get hooked and addicted to it, it is impossible to leave it and live without it. Rajgopal is no exception as he is being spotted at all those places where a political drama is taking place even after he had taken the so-called political sanyasam. He remains loyal to Kiran Kumar Reddy and is often seen hovering around him. It is better politicians thought not twice but ten times before they make declaration of renouncing politics. MEGA STAR OFF STEP He was an inspiration to many budding artistes in Tollywood as he ascended the slippery ladder of stardom by sheer hard work. This Big Hero, however, has become a big zero by plunging into politics and taking wrong ‘steps’. He proved to be a leader in a hurry and wanted to become chief minister taking a shortcut. Perhaps with the same intention he merged his PRP with Congress. Had he protested against Telangana Bill, he would have gained sympathy of the public. Even post-bifurcation, he made efforts to become chief minister even albeit a brief period that earned him the wrath of others in the party. However, his wish to become the chief minister remained a distant dream. His well wishers feel that he can restore his lost image at least to some extent, if dons the grease paint again. But some wonder if his 150th film will bring him back on right track or not.
CLASH OF TITANS Jayadev, son of former Minister Galla Aruna Kumari and brother-inlaw of Superstar Mahesh Babu, joined TDP, eyeing the Guntur Lok Sabha seat. His father-in-law Ghattamaneni Adiseshagiri Rao is aspiring for the neighbouring Tenali, it is learnt. If the things work the way they want the entire region would be controlled by their family. However, TDP’s one family - one seat norm comes in the way of the Galla-Ghattamaneni strategies. Moreover, party cadres are against this combination as the other contender is none-other than Alapati Raja, a politician of a long standing and would not take it lying low. It is for Chandrababu Naidu to decide for whom he would cast his vote.
OM SHANTHI OM That stormy petrel Vijayashanthi is now in Congress fold is no surprise but the timing of her move raises many doubts. The actor-turned-politician and TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao parted after a fight over Medak seat and when Shanthi was sidelined for the sake of KCR’s daughter Kavita. Eulogising Sonia Gandhi, Shanthi disapproved the TRS chief’s reluctance to merger. Congress seems to be the beneficiary of this conflict. And it is also said it is Congress which is scripting all the fiery dialogues Shanthi has been delivering of late. The strategy is to unleash a power leader against KCR and pressurise him for merger. Rumours are rife that she will take a few more TRS MLAs to the Congress fold. It is also felt that if both the parties merged, Kavita will lose her sheen in the colossal presence of the Lady Boss. Moreover, Shanthi seems to have gained considerable clout in Congress compared to Kavita who went to meet Sonia on thanksgiving mission along with her family. Yet Congress summoned Shanthi and unrolled a red carpet for her, following its divide-and-rule policy. FOR BETTER EXPOSURE When it is about clicking and shooting the best of you, he is the Man in the industry who creates the masterpiece. Certainly living legends need no introduction. He is Villa Ramana, whom the world better known as Villart Ramana. He has created a strong presence in this industry that thrives on aesthetics and has been committed to the cause of making photography bigger and better. A self-made man, Ramana values talent and believes there is no dearth of it in our country. What they require is the right launch pad and that is what he wants to provide to the budding photographers through his one-of-itskind platform Villart Photo Expo. Welcomed and acknowledged by the photography fraternity, Ramana is all set to hold Photo Expo 2014 at JRC Convention, Hyderabad. Slated for 28th, 29th & 30th March, this year it is going to be even a bigger show than the ones he had organized in previous years, with new products, seminars, workshops, fashion shows, entertainment, besides adding Broadcast and Film Expo as a parallel show. Over 100 national and international companies will exhibit, educate and sell their products. No wonder it is South India’s No.1 and India’s 2nd biggest photo and video exhibition. The three-day show is expected to attract thousands of photographers and photo-enthusiasts, who want to upgrade their knowledge. Even many film stalwarts applauded Ramana’s efforts and endeavours.
JAGAN MAYA Rumours are rife that YSRC president Jaganmohan Reddy is insecure about Sharmila’s growing popularity. Recent developments only show that after all there is no smoke without fire as Jagan is hoisting Sharmila as the party chief of Telagnana wing in spite of her getting brickbats from the T-activists. Jagan detractors feel that the objective of appointing Sharmila is to further humiliate her and to keep her at a safe distance from Seemandhra politics. Obviously Jagan could do with no competition. If at all Sharmila with some dint of luck garners at least some votes and seats, it is welcome for him and at least get a toehold in Telangana state and if she loses it will be her natural death in politics. Moreover, he also wants to prove a point that he is not ungrateful and does return the favours he receives and by making her the party chief he also can silence the people who wonder, “When Jagan could sideline his own sister, what would be our fate?” HEAVY FACTOR Actors undergoing transition to get into the skin of the character they are playing is not a new thing. The late thespian ANR is said to have starved for months for the role of Devadas in 50s itself. Such was his dedication. The budding artistes go through different kinds of arduous training to bring authenticity to the roles they play. Of late it is learnt that young rebel star Prabhas deliberately gained multiple kilos for his upcoming Rajamoouli’s Baahubali. He looks like a colossus with 200 kg weight in the stills released on the net. Once the shoot is finished, how can the actor lose those extra kilos is intriguing his fans. The weight factor may also take its toll on his upcoming marriage. One should wait and watch whether that Bheemavaram Belle matches the stature of this Macho Man for whom she is waiting in the wings.
INEVITABLE PROPS Launching a television channel or a newspaper is no easy task, as lots of money is to be pumped into them and the gestation period for achieving break-even point is also too long. Yet political leaders in the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh decided to launch their own media houses, as they feel there is no better way to get publicity for themselves. The tradition started with Chandrababu Naidu (N Studio) and Rajasekhara Reddy (Sakshi). We heard that Kiran Kumar Reddy too followed their suit and purchased some stakes in I Channel for a whopping amount. Though not officially announced, his brothers are handling the channel which predominantly focuses on Kiran, highlighting his achievements and projecting him as the only able leader and showing the rest in poor light. Looks like politicians cannot reach their high chairs without props like a newspaper or a channel. It is all the more better if they have both to blow their own trumpet. red | march 2014 | 69
CRAFTING SMILES,
RAJESH WAY By Ranita Ray
Shoot By Dhana Vijay
In the field of dentistry, only a few practitioners have been able to make their mark as Dr. Rajesh Kumar. Y has made. Whether it is setting up the expansive and the state-of-the-art facility ‘The Smile Specialty Dental Clinic’, that provides cutting-edge services to the patients or the innovative approaches he adopts, he has been a pioneer, especially in the field of esthetic dentistry. Furthermore, he is very well known for his oratory skills. The lectures he delivers on various forums both at home and abroad, on the most progressive topics in dentistry, earned him name as the top speaker. His keen interest in philanthropy and social service, adds to his multi-dimensional personality. Undoubtedly, orthodontist Rajesh makes Vizag proud.
FOUNDATION He is the youngest born of Mr. Y. Ramakrishna Rao and Mrs. Sailaja of Palakonda. “My father, although studied medicine never practised it. He continued with his parental profession and chose to be a landlord,” narrates Rajesh. During his basic education at Hyderabad Public School, Rajesh realized his passion for sports and turned out to be a good athlete. He represented the school in National Juniors athletics. Touring all over the country, he met great sports icons like P. T. Usha. One event led to another and he got the opportunity to be a part of All India Public School Army Camp held at College of Military Engineering, Pune and National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. Here he could hone his skills as a sportsman, playing with the cadets, who were gold medalists of Asian rowing champions. Their high fitness levels inspired him so thoroughly that he even wanted to join the Defence Service.
MILESTONE His mother, however, wanted him to be a doctor. With many of his uncles and aunts being in the field of dentistry, Rajesh felt that he could fulfill his mother’s wish. He also observed that dentistry in India is in a state of neglect and there is a tremendous scope to bring in positive changes. He joined the Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, to pursue studies in Dental Surgery. However, it is not all studies for him. The initial three years, he kept participating in a lot of sports and represented the college at south-zone championships. It was followed by internship at Osmania Medical College. Here he chose Orthodontics as the major. “I always liked this specialty because it is beyond ‘just dentistry’. One can do wonders with the facial bones even through non-surgical processes,” explains Rajesh. Later, he enrolled himself for the postgraduation in MDS at the Moscow Medical and Stomatological Institute, Russia. Here, he not only mastered the Russian language, but also emerged with flying colours. Being a merit student, he got the opportunity to be trained under veteran professors. He was also chosen to serve in an organization called Seventh-day Adventist hospitals where he worked under Prof. Abraham George. He was given the responsibility to open a branch in Yugoslavia. As the country was at war at that time, Rajesh came back to India. In March 1997 he set up The Smile Specialty Dental Clinic in the city. A diploma-holder in Fixed Orthodontics, he was trained under renowned Prof. Claude.G.Matasa, Moscow. He earned FAGE-Fellowship in Academy of General Education, Manipal, fellowship in Implantology from the Charles University, Europe and diploma in Nonextraction Orthodontics. He has also done Certified Training in Continuing Education Program in Endodontics, conducted by Pierre Fauchard Academy, Frankfurt University. He was trained in advanced programme in Esthetic Dentistry, Hamburg University and has gained expertise in Opalescence Tooth Whitening and specialized in treatments like Lasers, Implants, Invisalign Orthodontics. In the 17-year journey, Rajesh has earned name and fame besides vast experience of serving as a senior faculty in Sree Sai Dental College and as a consultant for NRI Hospitals, Apollo, CARE and other leading hospitals in and around Vizag. He has also opened another branch of Smile Super Specialty in Srikakulam. USP “I am not here to earn money, nor do I take my profession lightly,” he says. He believes in perfection and strives to provide the best of the treatments to his patients. He spares no efforts to upgrade his knowledge and travels the length and breadth of the world to gain it. He is thoroughly skilled in diagnosis and treatment of oral cancers. It is not only his vast knowledge, but also his ability to handle patients with empathy that has made him one of the most sought after dentists of this region. red | march 2014 | 71
“I found a very good friend in him and he has made my life complete. He is very sportive and has a positive approach towards life.”
A LEAF OUT OF HIS DIARY
“She sacrificed the golden opportunity of going to the US to get married to me. But let me tell you, she never complained about it.”
6.00 am: Wake up 7.00 am: I try to spend an hour with my kids before they go to school 7.15 am: I am a fitness freak and dedicate one hour for exercise. I have a personal trainer at gym Latitudes; a day never goes without working out. 9.00 am: Head for work 2.00 pm: Back home for lunch 4.30 pm: Resume work. If there is any special case like surgery or accident, which is to be attended at general hospitals, I go there. I also visit the hospitals where I am a consultant, besides attending to my patients at my clinic. 9.00 pm: Back home. I am a late sleeper. Watching television, especially movies unwinds me. There is ideally no weekend for doctors, but I try to keep Sunday off. On Saturdays I catch up with my colleagues or fellow doctors. We have formed a group, Continuing Dental Education (CDE). We conduct local and national conferences and doctors from diverse backgrounds from all over the country come together to discuss the latest happenings in the field. Sundays are gym and family time. I have a 12-gear cycle and the mornings are for sweating it out the cycling way. Afternoons are for long drives, eating out or partying. We make sure to have the best of the fun hours.
“I always liked this specialty because it is beyond just dentistry. One can do wonders with the facial bones even through non-surgical processes.”
PIONEERING His clinic is one of the few which introduced super specialty concept. The avant-garde model was the result of his extensive international exposure. “Smile was the first to do laser surgery in dentistry and implantation in the city way back in 1998,” recollects Rajesh. Today it has empanelment with Central Government, State Government, NALCO (Damanjodi), Bharat Dynamics Ltd., Hindustan Petroleum Chemicals Ltd. etc. VISION He wants to uplift the standards of dentistry, discarding certain processes and practices that are still being followed in the country which are declared obsolete as per international standards. Quackery is something which disturbs him the most and he wants to eradicate it completely. He aims to make dental care available to all, especially to the rural denizens in remote corners of the country. He also wishes to conduct a lot of oral cancer screening camps for the needy as he identifies it as one of the most alarming maladies of this region. He has been giving strong messages against gutkha and tobacco through various media. PASSION He believes in serving people and goes that extra mile to help the underprivileged. He has conducted many dental camps in the regional municipal schools in Araku, Paderu and Kothavalasa. He has worked extensively on the projects taken up by service clubs like Rotary and Jaycee in
and around Vizag. For the Lions Club, he has organized various camps in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and in a few districts of Odisha. He has adopted PAPA Home for Children and provides dental treatment free. He has been actively associated with St. Joseph’s old-age home and renders service to the inmates by providing them with basic necessities time and again. FUTURE PLANS The dynamic world of medicine has been always coming up with fresh technologies and new tools that ensure painless treatment. He wishes to keep himself updated with the latest developments and bring in the new technical know-how to be made available locally. He also desires to create a platform for a team of experts who can interact with one another and exchange views on the up-to-the-minute happenings in this field. Along with a few of his counterparts, he is in talks with health insurance companies to cover dental treatments. “Regular annual dental checkup is mandatory for all. However, it is an expensive treatment for the low income group. The insurance will certainly be a great help for this strata,” opines Rajesh. He is also planning to open a hospital in the city to offer dedicated services in both dentistry and ophthalmology. Stressing on the importance of dental health, Rajesh says that dental checkup and treatment are a ‘must’ even before
cardiac treatment. He appeals to the cardiologists to make a dental test mandatory for the heart patients. “It is 100% important for all those who go for a cardiac surgery to undergo a dental checkup. Oral bacteria can wreak havoc if not nipped in the bud. The bacteria like Streptococcus commonly live in the mouth, are responsible for causing tooth plaque and gum disease and shockingly it can trigger cardiac disorders. But no one is paying attention to this; people are treating the offshoot, i.e. heart problem, but not the cause. I have been trying to convey this message but it seems to be falling on the deaf ears,” laments Rajesh. He further adds that there are similar other diseases like arthritis, diabetes, kidney disorders which are connected to or triggered by dental problems. He wants to educate people on these issues. ADVICE Medical practice is much beyond making money. One should organize a lot of free health camps to render service to the underprivileged. If every well-to-do person adopts two street children and bears the expenses of their health care, it makes a lot of difference. QUOTE When you play a game, it doesn’t matter whether you win or lose it. All that counts is how you play it. red | march 2014 | 73

KAVITA, GREAT SUPPORT: RAJESH It has been 10 years of marriage, but touchwood, from the beginning we gel very well. After obtaining MCA degree, she was about to leave for the US where she got a job. She sacrificed the golden opportunity of going to the US to get married to me. But let me tell you, she never complained about it. She continued her education here. She did M.Tech in computer science and is currently working for a lead-quality division of online academic help for the American students, a US-based MNC. She has been a good inspiration to me. She is brilliant and has a clear vision. It is only through her encouragement and support, I could come this far. I conveyed the same to my parents and left the decision to them and rest is history. I found a very good friend in him and he has made my life complete. There is no hierarchy set in our relationship and we are on equal footing. Not only as a husband but also as a human being, he is really good. That makes him loveable. He believes in enduring relationships. People change over years. But here is one person who remains the same for me, his friends, patients or whoever comes into his life. He is very sportive and has a positive approach towards life. He gives equal importance to family and professional life. He is a wonderful father and despite his busy schedules, he doesn’t compromise on his time with our children Shreya and Ashrith. I am the disciplinarian at home; he is the one to pamper them. By Ranita Ray
BACKGROUND Prashant hails from Warangal. His father Dr. Bajarang Lal, a paediatrician, wanted him to be in his line and become a doctor. Both Prashant and his elder brother Kamal favoured neither the medical profession nor their father’s medical distribution business, but preferred to follow their own respective interests. While Kamal started his jewellery line in Warangal, Prashant was yet to find his calling. INTEREST AND INITIATION Prashant was a good artist right from the beginning and earned accolades for his sketches and paintings. But he couldn’t devote enough time to pursue this passion for long and left it half way as his father wanted him to focus on his studies. But destiny had other and obviously a bigger plan for him. His childhood pal wanted to study fashion designing and to help him pass the exam, Prashant too enrolled himself in the course. Ironically, his friend couldn’t get through, but he passed out with flying colours. As he explored the course, his creative skills that remained dormant till then started responding to this welcoming change. He, ultimately, realized that it was where his heart lied. The glamour of the fashion industry fuelled his interest further. LAUNCH After graduating from NIFT, Mumbai, in 1999, Prashant worked for a few months in an export house to gain practical experience. He came to Hyderabad, from where he started exporting small consignments to countries like Dubai and Africa. However, it was the recession which discouraged him from investing in a factory. That is when Prashant made three poignant observations. One - Hyderabad needs an urgent changeover in designer wear, especially for men; two - Hyderabadis were going to Mumbai and Delhi or abroad to shop for weddings and high end functions and third and most important that men’s wear is his forte. As there were only a few designers working on this segment, he could create a special niche in the market within no time. He shifted to retailing in the year 2000 and launched his store ‘Contradition’. He floated a unique concept of making designer wear like suits, blazers and trousers from imported fabrics from Italy, UK, and brands like Versace, Christian Dior. He used to customize according to the clients’ tastes and requirements. Soon he started offering something cost-effective and unique and exclusive. Supported by a skilled team, his venture had become an instant hit.
GENESIS OF ‘CONTRADTION’ “When I was in the final year of the course, I witnessed a show with the same name ‘Contradition - Confluence of Traditions’,” Prashant recollects. He felt nothing could suit the name of his creation better than this. CONCEPTS INTRODUCED When he started the only pattern with which men were aware of were plains, checks or stripes. He pioneered floral patterns in men’s wear, which was otherwise considered the hippie-style. He also made them realize that there are different fits and designs for different occasions. He introduced separate line of club and party wear. These pieces are done with a bit of extra thread work which is not embroidery but minimal detailing like jaali work or little work on the buttons, cuffs etc. Giving the go-by to asymmetrical designs which are unisex, he creates symmetrical designs which look sober and classy. Fashion forecast was given due importance.
CHALLENGES Earlier, there was a lack of awareness as far as the fabric, designs and styles are concerned. But now people have good knowledge of what to pick. He also realized that bespoke tailoring was not easy as every detailing plays vital role. People want personalized touch and they come to him for that perfect fit besides unique designs. Meeting such wide demands becomes a bit toiling at time. USP The fit of the suit and trousers given by him is unbeatable. That people sometimes buy designer suit from elsewhere and come to him for alteration shows how brilliant he is when it comes to a perfect fit. He never took the help of ads or marketing to promote his product. He just did one show in 2003. He is here merely through the word of mouth publicity. FUTURE PLANS He wishes to open four or five stores in Hyderabad very soon. After that he plans expansion across the state, which is to be followed by pan India presence. Even his online store is under progress. He plans to offer one-of-its-kind customization option to his global customers and he is sure it will be an instant success. However, he doesn’t intend to start clothing for women. FASHION DEFINITION It is about going along with the trend, follow the colours, understand the designs and carry yourself confidently. It should be the way, where the person doesn’t have to explain what is he/she wearing, but let the outfit do the speaking.
Work hard and party harder!”
ADVICE It is not important what you want to do, but it is how you do it, especially in today’s highly competition driven market. In this industry it is vital as how you create, design and also market it. You have to have your USP to stand out from others.
DAY FROM DIARY 8.00 am: Wake up 8.30 am: Enjoy a cup of tea while watching news or going through the newspaper 8.30 - 9.30 am: Light workouts 10.30 am: Head for work 8.00 pm: Back home I never sleep before 1.00 am, so I watch movies Weekends are party time. I am very fond of music and movies, so the new releases are must watch. We meet friends on Saturdays and go clubbing, partying or for a poker game. We love to travel, so often we drive down to nearby places or resorts. I am a sports freak and I had even played cricket at district level. So that passion is still there today, as I play a lot of night matches with our local groups.
HE IS MY BEST FRIEND: RADHIKA Although our marriage was arranged, the decision was left to us to take the next step. He hails from a very progressive family and that was one of the prime reasons for me to give my nod as I wanted to continue studies and work even post-marriage. Let me tell you, falling in love was a gradual process. In fact, in the initial two to three years, I didn’t feel I was married. It was as if I was dating and living with my boyfriend. It’s been 13 years of togetherness now. Our bonding has grown stronger as time passed by. He is my best friend, he understands me a lot. He has a great sense of humour and that takes care of the fun part too. He has a very positive attitude towards life and is more solution oriented. Whenever there is a problem, he is keen to solve it rather than fret over it. If there is a fight, it is mostly Prashant who calls ceasefire. He is the peacekeeper not only in our case but for the entire family. We are blessed with Taraksh and Aashvi and they are his life, especially his daughter. As a businessman he is quite shrewd, at the same time he is a very good employer. He inspires loyalty among his employees, who have been with him for the past 13 years. He has amazing leadership qualities.

HOLLYWOOD MASALA CYRUS AND PERRY LIPS LOCKED While LGBT rights is still a controversial issue, looks like the Hollywood celebs are all out to lead the rest. One such historical event was witnessed when the singing sensation Miley Cyrus lip locked with Katy Perry. Yup, you heard it right! While singing "Adore You" during her Bangerz Tour concert in Los Angeles, Miley came down from the stage and smooched Perry, who was sitting in the front row. Though the kiss’s life was just for a second, it was enough to take Perry and the onlookers by surprise. Later, Perry Tweeted a photo of the aftermath and told Cyrus, "I adore you." Get it?
PRISONER OF PUNCH His stunts were undoubtedly quite thrilling to watch on reel of Avatar. But star Sam Worthington perhaps forgot that he is in real world and landed in jail. While having a good time with his girlfriend over a drink at a bar of Jane Street and Greenwich Avenue. paparazzo Sheng Li allegedly kicked the Australian actor’s companion in the shins. Furious with such conduct, Sam punched Li in the face, resulting in a slash to the nose. With in no time the cops arrived and arrested both Worthington and Li. However, it is not the first brush with the law for the actor, as he was arrested for disorderly conduct in Atlanta in 2012 earlier. red | march 2014 | 80

KING TO SING After doing a lot of dhisoom dhisoom on the silver screen, Jr. NTR is going to steal the hearts of his fans by once again singing for his film. Yes the news is confirmed. For his upcoming movie 'Rabhasa' which is already being expected to be a blockbuster as per the sentiment; NTR will be singing one of the numbers which are being composed by Thaman. This is not the first time that the mega star is going to prove his talent on ragas, his ‘Olammee thikka regindaa' song from blockbuster film 'Yamadonga' was a super hit and so was 'Chary' song from 'Adhurs'.
YOU HAVE TO WAIT: AVIKA She is just one movie old, but looks like debutant actress Avika Gor already acting way too pricey. Recently she made the producer and senior journalist Giridhar wait for six long months to have her on board for the upcoming movie 'Lakshmi Raave Maa Intiki'. The script of the movie was narrated to her before and she liked it also. However, she already started shooting for 'Uyyala Jampala' which turned out to be a hit. There are talks that she even told the team to carry on with some other heroine ‘if they can't wait’. However, director Nandyala Ravi and Giridhar were keen on having Avika as the female lead and had no other go but to wait for half a year. Hoo!! Is it what means by starry tantrums?

Nine F
rom her debut film Ishtam in 2001 to playing the lead role opposite many a top By Avinash Chandra Gembali hero in the industry - not to speak of her item numbers in a couple of films - actress Shriya Saran has come a long way. Portraying a woman-oriented character in her latest film Pavithra fetched her critical acclaim. Apart from Telugu films, she proved her mettle in Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi movies too. She also appeared in a few English and Kannada films. An accomplished Kathak dancer, actively involved in various charity activities (she works for an NGO and opened a spa employing visually challenged people) and a soft spoken, humble, down-to-earth celebrity for many, Shriya has another world beyond films. The leggy lass is now awaiting the release of the multi-starrer Akkinenis’ Manam. Unlike many of her ilk, the actress reveals an inclination to spirituality. So Shriya doesn’t talk just films but on a wide range of topics.
T
he moment we speak of multi-starrer Pandavulu Pandavulu Tummeda (PPT), the visuals of hot Bangalore belle Pranitha Subhash dance before our eyes. Basking in the glory of the film’s success, she obviously is on the Cloud Nine. If Bava ushered her in, it was Atharintiki Daredi that led her on the shiny path of success. Eventually she joined the Manchu Clan. She, in no small measure, contributed her mite to keep the audience in stitches in the ribtickler PPT.

Starring opposite Siddharth, she walked away with thousands of hearts with her very first performance as the village girl in Bava. Bagging 15 films in a short span of three years in itself is a testimony to her acting skills. She appears to be going her senior Kajal Agarwal’s way as success seems to be smiling at every step this doe-eyed damsel is taking. The Kannada siren, who shot to fame as Pawan Kalyan’s maradalu (sister-inlaw) is now leaving no ‘role’ unturned to garner attention in Tollywood and to stay in limelight. Besides films, she is into ad world and is the brand ambassador of a number of brands like Joy Alukkas Jewellery, Coimbatore, RKS Grand Shopping Mall, Hyderabad, SVB Silks, Salem, Bombay Jewellery, Kuala Lumpur, Sri Lakshmi Jewellery, Pondicherry. Recently she was the Brand Ambassador of the Karnataka Bulldozers in the Celebrity Cricket League Season 3. She was offered a role opposite Diganth in Kannada film Bisile in 2008. However the role she eventually lost to Jennifer Kotwal. She then made her debut in the 2010 Kannada film Porki, a remake of the Telugu blockbuster Pokiri, opposite Darshan. After its success, she spurned several offers in Kannada and was choosy about her projects before signing the Telugu film Bava. Later she went on to appear in her first Tamil film Udhayan opposite Arulnithi. Following its success she was roped into act opposite Karthi in Saguni (Sakuni in Telugu) that turned out to be her biggest release in a record number of 1,150 theaters all over the world and 450 theaters alone
in Andhra Pradesh. The film was touted to be the highest grosser in Tamil after Rajinikanth's Robot. Pawan-starrer Atharintiki Dharedhi, gave her career a different turn. Apart from Telugu, she’s doing quite well in Kannada as well these days. Besides Pandavulu Pandavulu Thummedha her Kannada film Brahma did well at the box-office this year. Of late she is part of Junior NTR’s upcoming film Rabhasa and signed a Kannada film titled ‘Second Hand Lover’, in which she’s paired up opposite Ajai Krishna Rao.
Excerpts How are you enjoying the Pandavulu Pandavulu Tummeda success? I am very happy as it is doing well across the state. How was it working with Manchu family? It is a very nice experience as the film has very rare storyline and unique picturization. It is totally star-studded. It is an enriching experience to share the screen with veterans like Mohan Babu garu and Brahmanandam garu.. A few words about Mohan Babu. He is extremely dedicated to his work. Discipline is what is missing on the sets these days, say many people. That is what Mr. Mohan Babu tried to restore and we all followed it. Tell us about your co-star Vishnu. Vishnu is very dedicated to his work. He is not prankster like his brother Manoj and is very much worried about
his dialogues. They are just opposite in their nature just like Ram Aur Shyam. Your first Telugu film Bava earned you name and fame. Your comment. It has given me a lot of experience. I put in a lot of efforts into this role which paid me good dividends. I can never forget about it. How did you land the big ticket Pawan Kalyan starrer Atharintiki Daredi? Trivikram Sir and Pawan Sir were the main reason for the role landing in my lap. Especially, Trivikram Sir was sure that I would perfectly fit the bill. A few words about Pawan Kalyan He is a humble and down-to-earth person. He is really helpful to newcomers. More than an actor, he is a human being to be admired. I feel proud to have acted with such a nice actor. Did you feel sidelined when you had to share the screen with other heroine Samanta in the film? We were very comfortable with each other. There is always space for people with talent. Apart from Telugu what are the other languages you are into? I am into Kannada films. I also acted in Tamil films. Did you find any difference, acting-wise, in Telugu and other languages? There is not much difference. The effort that goes into the role is same whatever may be the language it speaks. Now I know Telugu to certain extent. So I am quite comfortable in Tollywood.
red | march 2014 | 85
Going by your acting career, industry feels that you have hit the jackpot. Your take on it. I am happy that I could live up to the expectations of the audience and industry. I am grateful to them for recognizing and accepting me in such a big way. When do we see you in the lead role? May be very soon, it is too early to say. I rather announce it when things are crystallized. What is your dream role? I would love to act in a period film. I’ve always dreamt of wearing traditional costumes like the princesses (heroines) wear in such films like Arundhati and Magadheera. Any offers in Kollywood? Let us see how it goes. Any new Telugu film? Not yet. Any plans to act in Bollywood? I am more comfortable in South. Yes. There are a couple of offers. But I have to think of it very carefully as it involves a lot of travel and shuttling between Mumbai and Bangalore, where I live with my family.
RED How do you feel being on the red cover? I am proud to be featured on the cover of a top magazine of the state. Decode red. It is a fun magazine. There is so much to learn from it like the celebrities and their lifestyles. It is perfect to read when you are chilling out. A message for your fans. It is very nice to be loved.
Tell us about your film which was said to be based on a real life story I acted in Jarasandha and Bheema Theeradalli, a real life story of a Naxalite. Interestingly , I got an opportunity to act in both films opposite Duniya Vijay. The latter was a biggest grosser in Karnataka. I earned a lot of accolades for my portrayal of Bheemavva and was nominated for Filmfare award. Are you dubbing your own dialogues? Do you find difficult to lip sync? Lip sync is very easy. A lot of people suggested that my voice suits my roles. If my director insists on it, I certainly like to dub. It is any way better than depending on ‘borrowed’ voice. The only hitch is that my accent may come in the way when I speak Telugu and Kannada. What are the criteria you consider for selecting a role? I am choosy and very particular about the role. It has to suit me. I read the script carefully to find out what the role is all about. Only when I am satisfied with it, I sign on the dotted line. What language are you comfortable with? I can fluently speak Kannada, English and Hindi. I can manage Telugu and Tamil. Do you think there is a future for cinema? Yes, the cinema is here to stay. Don’t we see that film enthusiasts are growing by the day? People, drained by the day-long pursuits, want to escape into this beautiful world called cinema. What is that change you want to see in the society as a youngster? I want to see a day on which I can open a newspaper without dreading to see ‘negative’ reports.
red | march 2014 | 86
Who is your guiding force in the family? My parents inculcate good values in me and keep me grounded. When it comes to films, I should say I hardly get any guidance from anyone.
Being practising medical professionals, my parents don’t have time to guide me in selecting roles or scripts. In fact, they don’t even watch films much, except the ones in which I acted. So I take opinion of my friends in selecting the scripts. Tell us about your family background I am the only daughter. My father is a physician and mother is a gynaecologist. They run a hospital in Bangalore. Going by the tradition of doctor’s child becoming doctor, many thought I would toe my parents’ line. There was some kind of pressure on me too. But I am destined to become an actor and here I am. Owing to their celebrity status, stars and cricketers are naturally attracted to each other. Looks like Pranitha too is no exception. A la Sharmila Tagore of yesteryear heroine who went ga ga over Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (Tiger Pataudi) and even married him, Pranitha is said to be fond of cricketer Virat Kohli. The doe-eyed beauty never misses a chance of watching cricket when this vice captain holds the bat in his hands. She feels that he is the best batsman in the world.
Do you have any diet plan? No. I eat everything. Are you religious? I have faith in God. I believe in basic pooja and customs, but I am not religious. Any first crush? I had a crush on Leonardo DiCaprio, the hero of Titanic. What attracts you in people? Politeness. You receive compliments for… For my ‘sweet’ voice. Your favourite perfume Euphoria by Calvin Klein. Your favourite car Not one. There are many. How are you enjoying your celebrity status? I don’t go overboard. I go with the flow.
Naturally her liking for him gave the gist to the rumour mill that the duo had gone for lunch on numerous occasions. She, however, refuted the allegations and said, “Yes I love cricket a lot but there is no truth in reports that are based on our alleged relationship.” She was furious when asked about Virat and their so called ‘friendship.’ People, however, of the opinion that there is no smoke without fire.
Snapshots What are you scared of? Being alone in darkness. Your favourite star? A whole lot of them. Do you have any role models? No. I don’t have any one role model as there are a lot of people who made it big in their own individual fields. Your favourite directors. Many and out of them, a few are in Kollywood and some in Tollywood. Rajamouli Sir is one among them. Your favourite actress. Parineeti Chopra. Any fan following? That you should tell me. Who are your idols in the industry? None in particular as I go with the flow. Are you a fitness freak? Not really but I follow a basic regimen to keep myself fit. red | march 2014 | 87

At the first instance she strikes you as a pretty face and a gracious host; the moment she opens a dialogue, you know that she is an engaging conversationalist but not the one to mince her words; spend a little more time with her, you understand that she is a woman with a clear vision and a specific mission; once you learn of the innumerable welfare activities she has successfully taken up and the movements she has efficiently spearheaded, you discover that she is born to lead. To cut a long story short, by the time you shake hands with her to bid goodbye, you are totally floored by her charm and grace and your respect for her goes up several notches. Meet Pedada Ramani, Congress Mahila President, Greater Visakhapatnam, you just cannot help saying, “Wow! What a woman!” It is often said that there's nothing more intimidating than a woman with a combination of good looks, money, talent and intelligence and Ramani proves that it is just another bias.
Pedada Narasinga Rao happened to be from her own village near Srikakulam. “We are distantly related too. In small villages all are related to one another. So are we,” she adds. An engineering graduate from GITAM, Rao was naturally drawn to beautiful Ramani, proposed and got engaged to her before he joined the Merchant Navy as Chief Engineer. They got married after a year later, and set sail to a lifetime of communion. “Life on the sea was very exciting and adventurous with us exploring a new city every time the ship touched a new port. But it can get a bit lonely, especially for those who like to be among people.” After eight years of
life on ships, which took Ramini all over the world and the birth of two boys, she chose to settle down in Visakhapatnam to give stability to her growing children and educate them. Rao too floated his own company, Picket Shipping and Logistics Pvt. Ltd., besides running security services. R(a)ising sons. Mention her sons - Deepak Saroj and Sandeep Saroj - Ramani emerges a typical and traditional mother, waxing eloquent and enthusiasm. Why not? Both the boys are already displaying rare talents and are heroes in the making. In fact the eldest is already well into stardom.
One need not be in politics to render service, but the power that goes with politics can certainly move even mountains. This precisely is the premise on which Ramani set out on the new path though politics was not her intended destination. With the world paying tributes to the woman, celebrating the International Women’s Day this month, this is the most appropriate time to talk of the lady. Birth of a leader. Born as the eldest daughter of a BHPV employee Mr. S. Satyanarayana and Mrs. Varalakshimi, Ramani holds the family in a close bond. Ramani had her schooling on the BHPV campus and went on to study her intermediate in BVK College. Later she joined Government Mahila College to pursue B.Sc. However, when it came to Post-Graduation, she chose to go for MA taking Sociology as the major subject. She also had obtained a B.Ed degree from M.R. College, Vizianagaram. This of course she did only at the behest of her father, who wanted her not lose rather a rare opportunity given only to a few students at that time. Around the world in 8 years. She got married while she was in the last year of the degree course and continued her studies thereafter. Flashing a disarming smile, she says, “The marriage was rather arranged.”

Glowing Star: 17-year-old Deepak, her first born, is an acclaimed actor as he acted in 35 films as a child artiste. Very recently he acted in the lead role Minugurulu, a messagegiving film in which he plays the role of a visually challenged boy. The film was adjudged the best in an international film festival that took place in Bangalore. “He is a born artiste and endowed with this rare gift,” says the proud mother, adding that he needed neither coaching nor props to give expression to his talent. He is right now pursuing BBA at SRM University (Sri Ramaswamy Memorial University), Chennai. Sports Star: The second son Sandeep Saroj, now studying in the 9th standard in local Timpani school is creating waves in the world of sports. A long- tennis enthusiast Sandeep is already a national level player and has been taking part in various tourneys across the country. He already made his mark as the captain of the Under-12 team. Ramani then turns her attention from her first love-family-to her second passion- social welfare activities. Into public life To make a difference and contribute her mite to society have been her aspirations right from the childhood. Fortunately, her marriage to the likeminded person opened new vistas for her. “My husband used to say that if a farmer’s son has to pay a fee for his school, he has to sell his produce. The farmer has money only as long as the grain lasts. His income is affected by the vagaries of nature. Being a farmer’s son himself, my husband had to face hardships to pursue his studies, Hence he always has farmers’ interests in his mind. Though mine is the most visible face in the public for service activities, the real spirit and encouragement come entirely from my husband. Funds for these services are drawn from our own personal savings.”

“To begin with, I formed a group with a few compatible people drawn from various professions and set up Global Welfare Society. We had women empowerment and public sanitation as our primary goals. Starting our work at the very grassroots, we adopted 10 villages in Aanandapuram. We conducted many kinds of camps including medical ones, tying up with prestigious organisations like CMR. The camp I organized for the AIDS-affected drew critical acclaim.
red | march 2014 | 96
In public sanitation programme, I started off with garbage bins distribution to discourage people from littering. I provided bins to the hawkers and pan shops across the city to spread the message. Later this project was emulated and replicated by the corporation. Turning into political portals As Ramani’s services were becoming popular, more and more people from diversified fields started knocking at her door for help. “And that is when I thought if I had to continue with my activities, it is better I get attached to some political party or the other. I joined TDP. But as the party denied me the ticket I contested as an independent in the municipal elections. My losing the election with a slender margin did not deter me from my path. I joined PRP. Here too I was in for a disappointment. After I was asked to file nomination papers, the seat was given to Mrs. Shereen Rehman. Though I was very hurt, I stuck to the party which eventually merged with the Congress Party. Despite all the turmoil Congress is facing now, I prefer to throw my lot with it.
Unfortunately, talks of 'equal opportunities to women' stay confined to papers. Even if they see light of the day, they are not implemented in toto.
Politics is primarily a man’s domain; do you agree? Yes, it is a man’s world. This is a bitter fact we all have to live with. Women are often exploited physically, mentally and sexually. Despite proving their mettle in all fields, women are not given the space and place they deserve. Hence the onus of senisitising fellow women against such exploitations squarely falls on the shoulders of the educated women and those who are in politics. These leaders should encourage the less blessed to realize and fight for their rights. Women should be given opportunities on a par with men. Unfortunately, talks of ‘equal opportunities to women’ stay confined to papers. Even if they see light of the day they are not implemented in toto. I suggest the best way to alleviate the women’s misery is to educate them and make them aware of their rights and the laws that protect them. The anti-liquour agitation born in Srikakulam district is a perfect example of women power. It is proved that any movement can be carried out successfully if women are involved in it. History stands testimony to this fact
and leaders like Jhansi Lakshmibai and Durgabai Deshmukh proved it beyond doubt. I resolved not to be put off by these problems. I maintain good ties with everyone around me and march on. There is no stopping people who are committed and ready for hard work. What kind of support do you get from your family? I owe a lot to my family that stands for me and by me. My husband, children, parents and sisters are there with me through thick and thin. I am certain I could not have made it to the present position either as a politician or as entrepreneur without their unflinching support. What is the most challenging task you faced till date? There are many. However, providing medical support to patients suffering from life-threatening diseases like AIDS and cancer was the toughest of all. I dig into my personal funds for this purpose. Most rewarding moment and any awards? Awards and rewards are plenty but the award I received from the Government
of Andhra Pradesh for the social service is what I cherish the most. Our Global Welfare Society won the Best Organisation Award at the Youth Employment Summit 2003 held in Hyderabad. . Do you derive satisfaction from the work you do? The satisfaction one derives from service is immense and immeasurable. I am moved by the love and affection showered on me by the people from the poor and weaker sections of society for the services I render. The satisfaction of serving innumerable people in a span of one’s life cannot be expressed in words. This thought gives me immense energy. From this energy emerges an urge to take up more tasks. How do you manage multi-tasking? If you have a positive attitude towards life, then a positive aura surrounds you, which is well-reflected in your day to day life. Despite all the pressures and workload, I always maintain my cool. I organise my time in a perfect manner. I am optimistic and think

positively. I don’t hold grudges against anyone. Come what may, I don’t let my smile fade, nor do I show my pain to others. Advice to women who want to join politics. More and more educated women should come into politics as they have an ability to focus on the issues on hand. They have the perseverance to accomplish any project they take up. I advise women to enter politics. What are your future plans? I want to grow as an ideal politician and as a social reformer to serve the people better. I also want to grow as an entrepreneur to provide employment to as many people as possible. Who is your inspiration or idol? Mother Teresa and Indira Gandhi. What are your hobbies? Interior decoration, designing of jewellery, clothes and saris and gardening. Ramani’s well-decorated house speaks volumes of her taste. She is known as the best dressed woman of the city. What is your passion? I always wanted to do something that would be of help to others. This childhood desire turned into a life time passion. Your bucket list. To render more and more service to help more and more people. I want to build a big hospital that gives free treatment to patients. I want to bring up my children to be useful to the country. Any inspirational quotes that make you think? The hands that sway the cradle should rule the world - WS Das The development of women reflects the development of the country - Pt. Nehru 100 steel muscled youth are enough for the development of the country - Swami Vivekananda You are an example of beauty with brain - comment. It is God’s gift. I am blessed to be called so. I believe beautiful mind makes beautiful soul. Entrepreneur you admire? There are many and the foremost among them is Sailaja Kiran
red | march 2014 | 98
How do you see woman’s role in society? Indian culture and traditions date back to 5,000 years. No other country has recognized the importance of women as it is done in India. Women were worshipped and treated with reverence even during Threta Yuga and Dwapara
Yuga. There are no epics without the mention of great women like Sita, Draupadi , Yashoda, Rukmini and Satyabhama. Boys should be taught to respect women right from the childhood at home. If that is done we will not see recurrence of Nirbhaya, Sumati and Esther incidents.
Educated women should pass on their knowledge and experience to the next generation.
Women should be selfreliant.
The tradition of respecting women should start from our homes.
Woman should not degrade herself expecting sympathy from others.
HER THOUGHTS
Your message for Women's Day. Women should be educated. If a woman is educated in a family, the entire family is developed. If a family is developed the entire nation develops.
Despite proving their mettle in all fields, women are not given the space and place they deserve.
Though mine is the most visible face in the public for service activities, the real spirit and encouragement come entirely from my husband. It is proved that any movement can be carried out successfully, if women are involved in it. Come what may, I don't let my smile fade, nor do I show my pain to others.

he personifies versatility. From being a social worker, dietician, wellness expert, author and columnist; she wears many hats. Is that all? Certainly not! When the world is under the grip of one of the deadliest ailments i.e., diabetes; she is on a mission to alleviate the suffering of millions. She is the founder and chairperson of Diabetes Foundation, which is working in this direction for the last one and a half decades. She is nominated as the Director on the governing body of “Latin and American Caribbean Federation of India” (LACFI) (premier organization of companies and businesses from 41 Latin American and Caribbean countries). She is also the Vice President - C.C, Wellness and Prevention at esteemed Continental Hospitals, where healthcare is redefined. None could have been more befitting than Dr. Anuradha Reddy to be featured on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
EARLY LIFE The fifth child of Sri T. Gurudatta Reddy and the late Smt. Damayanti Reddy of Hyderabad, Anuradha always wanted to carve out a career in heath sector. She qualified as a specialist in Medical Dietetics and Nutrition course from AIIMS, where she served for a while. Later, she went abroad to serve as a consultant to the International Health to South East Asian Region Corporation. She had a short stint as a chairperson with Sickle Cell Anaemia Trust. It was followed by studying Intensive Diabetes Management from Washington State University and Doctor of Honours in Wellness Services from International University for Complementary Medicines and Medicina Alternativa, Colombo. Equipped with varied experience, she came back to India only to embark on an even more arduous journey. TURNING POINT She advocates that “within the minuscule span of human existence, one is enjoined to do all the good one can do to everyone in every possible way.” Believing this edict, she has become pragmatic of the myriad channels available to build bridges between the worlds of ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’. She founded the first-ofits-kind Diabetes Foundation in 1997 in the state. The plight of the victims
of juvenile diabetes surviving on insulin disturbed her the most. She could bring in commendable changes among the diabetic patients of the region. She has screened over 11 lakh patients for blood sugar testing and detected several new cases. Her Foundation provides free insulin for children (below 16 years of age) whose parents cannot afford the cost of the treatment. Her doctoral degree in Wellness services further honed her skills. EXPANDING HORIZON As she forayed into the interiors of the country she realized the larger need of the underprivileged and transformed her foundation into a need-based organization. Soon she experienced that this organization’s service dropped like pebbles into the sea of humanity causing ripples and touched the lives not only of those suffering from diabetes, but also of AIDS, differently able people like visually challenged, physically challenged besides geriatric people, destitute and disenchanted. The Foundation has been catering to the starving denizens and providing pure drinking water, healthy and hygienic living conditions for the young and the old alike. One prime objective of the organization is to give meaningful existence to those living in the twilight of life.
For farmers she conducted surgeries like lypoma and lymphoma, bone densitometry tests. She organized several eye camps and carried out 1,687 eye surgeries. Serving the underprivileged children is an objective she can never turn away from. She has conducted several programmes for the street children. Besides distributing nutritious foods and supplements to tribal children, she piloted several programmes for preschool as well as physically and visually challenged children. Her compassion extends to prisoners too. She had organised numerous personality development and career guidance programmes for them, hosted HIV/AIDS awareness camps, diabetes screening camps and many such activities. Thus for the last one and a half decade, Diabetes Foundation has been lighting candles of hope in the needy and spreading the warmth of service. OBSTACLES Each programme she takes up is different and unique. Certainly working on the unknown is always a challenge. However, at the end of each task she has been blessed with success. She feels gratified, a feeling which “is beyond words.” Her untiring efforts paid off well.
PILLAR OF SUPPORT Calling her husband Dr. M. Srinivas Reddy as her greatest support system, Anuradha says that without him being so understanding and accommodating; she wouldn’t have been able to be what she is today. She also gives credits to her parent for giving her best of upbringing and her brother Guru Reddy, for inspiring her throughout. REWARDING MOMENTS During the last 16 years of her service, she discovered a very unique truth and found out that kindness and compassion come from the most unexpected quarters, that too from the less fortunate ones. This is something she says she will treasure forever. She recollects an incident, “Diet plays a crucial role in the control of certain diseases. Even a patient, who is in a coma, requires a coma feed. I worked on the diet of a terminally ill cancer patient and he recovered miraculously. The doctors were amazed to note that it was the determination and simple techniques of the dietician which brought him back to life.” AWARDS AND ACCOLADES Her endless efforts earned her an impressive array of rewards in many national and international fora. From the coveted FAPCCI Excellence Award 2009-10 for outstanding contribution for welfare of socially/ economically/ physically challenged destitute women, Nation’s Vikas Jyothi Award instituted by IOBRD, New Delhi, best woman Award contributing to the medical field, Exemplary Meritorious Service Award in the year 2010 on Republic Day, Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International, Outstanding Centennial President award of the District 3020 Rotary International to Adarsha Mahila Award for International Women’s Day; the list is just endless. VERSATILITY She has carried out extensive work at grassroots, especially for the empowerment of women in tribal and rural areas. She initiated several literacy programmes for women in slums of South Delhi and Coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh. She has authored “The diabetic's handbook: Most of your questions answered" to help diabetics to understand and live with the disease. The 45-page book answers 114 questions related to the problem. For four consecutive years, she has represented India in International Food Expo. Multitalented Anuradha served in numerous honorable posts too. She has worked as former consultant to British and Canadian High Commission and associated on the advisory board of several national and international organizations. From being the first woman president of Rotary Club, Executive Council of ASSOCHAM Ladies’ League, President of Sanskriti Charitable Trust which sponsors the treatment of children suffering from heart diseases, Member of various ethical committees for medical practice and research, Life member of IDA,NSI, Air Users Association and Indian Red Cross Society, consultant to British and Canadian High Commissions, Delhi to President of Village Wellness Awareness Movement of World Wellness Organization; her kitty is brimming with uncountable honours. She has been striving to create awareness among ignorant masses. Hence her activities include regular speeches on Nutrition & Dietetics on All India Radio at Hyderabad, Delhi and Vizag, initiating awareness programmes to educate patients. With her vast knowledge and extensive experience in the field of Nutrition and Preventive Medicine, she helps the patients manage various dietary needs. red | march 2014 | 102

OFF-WORK Despite her busy schedule, she carves out time for her creative pursuits. A nature lover, she seems to be blessed with green fingers. She spends available time mending her green pals in her garden. Interior designing is yet another field she finds really interesting and her beautiful house vouches for her great aesthetic sense. She loves networking with people too. ADVICE TO PEERS “A woman’s success is not measured by professional success or spiritual pursuits. I strongly feel that the first priority should be given to the family. Our happiness and morals are nurtured at home only when we are firmly rooted there. We grow out as the extended branches of peace, principles and prosperity. Undoubtedly, family values are the foundation upon which societies are built and the future is determined.”
FUTURE PLANS She just goes with the flow, without planning anything particular. “If I plan something, it doesn’t materialize, so I don’t plan,” adds Anuradha. But she wants to reach out to more number of needy people. WISH LIST She wishes her compassion should grow even stronger, so that she can extend her services to the underprivileged in every corner of the world. There is so much to do. She also wishes that people should have a positive attitude towards life.

HER THOUGHTS
MESSAGE ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY “It is the day when women across the world join their voices in recognition of the struggles and victories of their movement. It is also a day to plan strategies to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women. International Women’s Day marks the role of ordinary women as makers of history. It is rooted in the centuries-old efforts of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. Opening the door on women’s issue is like standing on the edge of a deep ravine that is vibrating with collective anguish where there should be outrage. There is denial and largely passive acceptance. A number of studies have established that women make an invisible but significant contribution to the economy through their labour at home and employment in formal and informal sectors. In our march towards 21st Century it is crucial that women’s talent and potential are promoted to make our society more peaceful and just. This means creating equal opportunities in all positions of decision making and in all leadership positions for nation building. Last but not the least, I appeal to all women that we need to recognize and release the “Shakti” that is lying dormant within us.”
We should care for Mother Earth One should forgive and forget The entire healthcare needs should be revamped Medicine is no more a single approach; it has to be practiced as a collaborate approach Patients should get the attention of the best doctors and treated with the best technology I want to be remembered as a very simple person One needs to have dedication, passion and compassion for the task taken up

WOMAN SUBSTANCE OF
NOT JUST HER FATHER'S DAUGHTER By V. Sarada
red | march 2014 | 108
If one has to choose between the coterie-surrounded, self-obsessed and elusive politicians and the more accessible, polite and down-to-earth leaders, the vote certainly goes to the latter. Dr.D.Purandeswari, indubitably, falls in the second category. She may not be highly vocal and melodramatic like some of her ilk; but she has proved that she is no soft touch and can fight her corner with cool dignity. Her no-frills attitude, despite her distinctive pedigree and affluent background, evokes love in friends and admiration in rivals. Besides being a prominent political leader, Dr. D. Purandeswari is a devoted wife, doting mother and zealous grandmother. Above all, she is a kind-hearted person. Visit her Vizag residence; you are greeted by a height-challenged man serving water and coffee. There cannot be a better testimony to her concern and compassion for the underprivileged. Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino says, “A woman must combine the role of mother, wife and politician.” We find out from Dr. Purandeswari, how she balances these three divergent roles. E X C E R P T S As the daughter of the legendary NTR did you have an eventful childhood? I cannot call it eventful as my parents made a conscientious effort to bring us up as humble kids and did not let the air and flair of NTR anywhere near us. They spared no efforts to keep us grounded. The household was run on the principle of Athidhi Devo Bhava. There was always a string of friends and relatives from both sides visiting us. We were taught to respect them. In fact, my father used to go a step further and say that in the order of priority the guests should precede us, the children. We were insulated from the glare and glamour of cinema and seldom taken to film shoots and functions. However, whenever there was a nice family shoot in which veterans like Savithri garu and Suryakanthamma garu were taking part, my father used to take us along and encourage us to interact with them. It gave us the pleasure of being part of the big family of cinema rather than the aura of being NTR’s kids.
What are the unique traits you inherited from NTR? Most certainly discipline and punctuality. He used to follow a strict regimen that included an hour of puja in the morning, which I follow even now. The other attribute is perseverance, which my husband good-humouredly dubs as stubbornness (laughs). If I think I need to do something, I do it come what may. How did you happen to be in politics? It was totally inadvertent and unplanned. It’s no exaggeration that I was unaware of it till I saw my name in the media. At that time my husband Dr. Daggubati Venkateswara Rao was a Member of Parliament. He wanted to come back to the state politics to bridge the widening gap between him and the local people. The party asked him to look for a suitable opponent for Mr.Rama Naidu, whom TDP was fielding. Despite the best of his efforts, my husband could not convince anyone to take up the challenge. He then suggested my name as a stopgap arrangement till a more suitable candidate was found. But once I entered the scene, the decision was sealed and there was no going back. How was the switch from homemaker to politician? Rather drastic. Till then I was a quiet homemaker and my life revolved round my two children. I didn’t think of doing anything but taking care of their needs. I was not at all prepared to be away from them as they were in a fragile age of adolescence. But it was they who understood the situation and prevailed upon me to enter this new world, promising to be responsible children. Thank God, they kept their word. What made your husband think that you were the right candidate? That I too keep asking him and all I get from him is an intriguing smile. Prior to my entry into the public life, I never even discussed politics with him, leave alone advising him on any issues relating to politics. Does politics take a toll on your personal life? Yes, it does. I felt the pinch at least on two occasions. First instance was when my grandchild was born. That is one occasion when no woman ever wants to be away from her daughter.
But here I was in my constituency touring in a remote area where I could not even get the cell phone signals. People at home were frantically trying to reach me and with no avail. The second occasion was when my son was getting married. Parliament was in session. There is a lot of pleasure in planning and preparing when a wedding takes place at home. I missed all the joy that goes with the event, like selecting and shopping for him. He even called me once and asked me, “Amma, do you realise that you have a son who is going to be married shortly?” Though he said in a lighter vein, I felt bad. There are times when I just want to sit back and play with my grandchildren. But it becomes impossible with people streaming in and out continuously. Did it come in the way of your marriage? No, it has not. On the other hand, our relationship has become stronger. Let me explain - when a woman is newly married, it is all hunky-dory. Call it love or infatuation. Then comes the stage the wife feels, “Ok! Let him think I know nothing but I know a lot.” Like any other couple, we too went through these phases. But when I entered politics, we became closer as we have a lot more to share. When an issue crops up at home or in the constituency, the first thought that crosses my mind is that I should discuss it with him. Ironically, we are discussing our family issues a lot more now because we have to make most of the little time we spend together. How do you manage both the fronts - family and profession? My husband and children are very cooperating, but I also must take some credit for keeping the family together. I go that extra mile to give them the confidence that even if I am away in terms of kilometres I am always with them in spirit. I call my husband and children every day and share with them all the happenings relevant to the family. Even now I love to cook and shop for them. They should know that I am a regular person with an additional responsibility. A special mention has to be made about my husband who is very broadminded and allows me to go forward. We enjoy a perfect rapport with the children and are open to any discussion on any issue. red | march 2014 | 109

“After I entered politics, we became even closer as we have a lot more to share.”
You are a scholar with finesse. How do you mingle with politicians who are in stark contrast to you? It takes all kinds to make a world. As I already told you, I come from a large family. Being the sixth child, I learnt to live with both older and younger siblings, besides hordes of relatives. Adjustment and adaptability are part of my growing up. I don’t let things around me ruffle me.
One thing you want to be remembered for? I want my husband to think that I am a good wife, my children to say I am a great mother and my grandchildren to rave over me “Wow, what a wonderful grandma!” I want people and colleagues to remember me as a responsible Parliamentarian. Above all, I want to be remembered as a good human being.
Did you ever regret your choice? Not really, except when I want to do something and am not able to do it or when I am not recognised for what I have done. Those are the occasions when I wish things were better and different.
What is your success mantra? Discipline, conviction and commitment. I thank God and my parents for giving me these gifts. My perseverance paid good dividends in some issues, especially those on which many threw up their hands.
What are the advantages or pressures that go with the NTR tag? As NTR’s daughter, I am received and treated with love and respect wherever I go. But I never take that for granted nor am I complacent. I have always done that extra homework required to do justice to my job. I have to live up to the standards set by him. This thought has been my driving force all through. On the flipside, people think it was a cakewalk and I got everything on a silver platter because I am NTR’s daughter, without seeing the hard work I have put in. Secondly, they expect me to perform like him. I keep repeating, “Please, don’t compare. NTR is NTR and I am I. Look at me as myself. I can never reach his stature. He is too tall a person for me to reach.”
Who is your idol? My parents. When it comes to public life where commitment and conviction are required, I idolise my father. As far as family responsibilities are concerned, it is my mother I emulate. She was a wonderful person and the binding factor in our family. Unfortunately, not many people know her. When people compliment us for our merits, I remember her because she instilled those values in us.
A woman in politics - how does it work? It is not easy. Initially, it was difficult for me to find my way in the maze of politics as people don’t take newcomers too seriously. It is only after I made my first intervention, that too in the field of agriculture, that they started acknowledging me. People should realize that there is a large untapped potential pool in the form of women. They should ensure that it comes to the fore. You have been shifted from HRD to Commerce and Industry, how was the switch? I am fortunate to have been given wonderful exposure in two very crucial and important portfolios - Human Resource Development, which deals with education, the very foundation of country’s economy and the Commerce and Industry, the guiding factor for economy that keeps the wheels of nation rolling.
What is your advice to newcomers? You need to believe in what you are doing. You are bound to succeed if you have no vested motive attached to your actions. Politics is one podium from where you can address a number of issues and reach out to multitudes, giving them good opportunities for which they yearn and which they richly deserve. So you have to rise above yourself and your interests. T I T B I T S Family Ours has been a loving and closelyknit family. We believe in talking with one another. This brings in a lot of confidence and trust in the relationship. Transparency is the watchword. Most supportive of them Very difficult to answer. My husband and children top the list. Whenever there is something worth acknowledging, pat come the calls from my siblings saying, “Chinnamma, you have done wonderful.” Memorable moment The first step I took into the portals of Lok Sabha, the highest House of democracy, where I am given an opportunity to speak on behalf of
10 lakh people. Secondly, looking at my father’s statue in Parliament. That was one moment I thought I would never get. Thank God it did happen. As a kid and teenager I was a quiet and responsible child. I would always tag along my mother who was referred to as Peddamma and that was how I earned the sobriquet Chinnamma. Moreover, my name is a tongue twister. So Chinnamma caught on. I attended a missionary school but was taught Telugu and Tamil at home. I learnt Kuchipudi dance. I was organised and punctual. If my mom wanted me to be ready at certain time, she was sure to find me there on the dot. Even in college I was a diligent pupil. I used to write poetry and had a huge compilation. It was this sensitivity in me that made me choose English literature, which eventually helped me in honing my oratory skills. Life a king size? I am a simple person. Even today I like to drive my car. I don’t like people fetching and carrying things for me. The incident that touched your heart Losing my mother. Hobbies Watching films, read and drive. How do you unwind? I watch everything and anything that comes on TV. I keep flipping channels and watch whatever catches my attention and engages me. Little known Purandeswari That I can get angry, which is very rare. I don’t throw tantrums but simply withdraw. The mood may last for two or three days. That is the time I am the last person you like to meet. My people know better than nudge me then. What would you like to do when you are anonymous? Saunter around and window-shop. Perfect holiday Any place where I can go with my family or friends. I hate to be alone. Best gift My beautiful children. Of course, my grandchildren who are perfect dolls.
People should realize that there is a large untapped potential pool in the form of women. They should ensure that it comes to the fore.”
BLISS&BONDING Even as the veteran politician Dr. Daggubati Venkateswara Rao is asked to talk of his illustrious wife Ms. Purandeswari, she playfully cautions him, “It's better be good. He responds with an enigmatic smile, giving a fleeting glimpse of that subtle and seamless communication between them. red | march 2014 | 112
“Our association started with my sister’s marriage to her brother and it culminated into what can be dubbed as love-cum-arranged marriage,” says Dr. Rao. From a huge pile of memories, he picks up a few to share. Stating that two incidents are enough to describe her simplicity, he says, “Both happened when NTR was serving as the Chief Minister and I as the Health Minister. On both the occasions she had to rush our ailing child to a doctor. In the first instance she was found waiting for her turn in a queue of patients, refusing to reveal her identity. In the second, she went driving to the doctor in the mid of the night. With husband as the minister, who had the entire health machinery at his beck and call, she could have easily summoned any doctor of her choice to our home, that too within minutes. But she took the arduous way. She is not the one to take advantage of power. What is more heartening is that she did not breathe a word about this to me. I came to know of these happenings many years later, that too during a casual chat.” “NTR used to have a unique habit of having meals in the wee hours. I used to see the young Purandeswari helping her mother cook and serve it. “Marriage is a bonding between two families. Yet a girl should not let one family know what transpires in the other. Whatever may be the situation, wife should greet her husband with a smiling face, when he returns home” - these were the handed down principles of her mother by which she lives. She calls and greets each and every family member on his/her birthday, marriage day and festivals.
AS LEADER Her political arangetrum was rather sudden. I suggested her name as the nominated candidate backed out at the last moment from the contest. YSR latched on to it immediately and the media flashed the news. This development caught her unawares. Instead of getting overwhelmed by the prospect, she simply asked me to rethink. But once she was in, she worked hard to reach where she is now. For one full year she looked no further. During that year itself, she was adjudged the best Parliamentarian by the Asian Age.
Speaker Somnath Chatterjee described her as a good orator. I strongly feel that the inspiration of NTR is still behind her journey through public life. She has made our nation’s presence felt in many international fora. Once she even took up cudgels for Pakistan, objecting to a report that had shown our neighbour in poor light. DOES HER BEING IN LIMELIGHT AFFECT YOU? I myself have done a lot of work and wielded immense power and seen the other side of the coin too. I know the transitory nature of these phases. Now I want to put my experience to better use. Moreover, I believe that the couple appearing together in public life is an avoidable complication.
HITESH (SON) The perfect example of family and cultural values in a human being, is none other than my mom. She is very hard working, always prepared for the next day. She is always available when we need her. The best situation analyser and finds the best answer possible for every situation. Supportive and understanding, she keeps us sane and grounded.
SRI PUJA (DAUGHTER-IN-LAW) Aththamma is charismatic, optimistic, understanding and very affectionate. She is a real source of support. She is more a friend to me than a mother-inlaw. There is so much to learn from her. She is truly a blessing.
NIVEDITA (DAUGHTER) She always tells us that we are like any other human beings and keeps us close to our roots and culture. We know that she has no breathing space at all. Her work demands a lot of her time. Yet somehow she is always there when we need her. She juggles a lot of things and still gets them all right. She is just perfect.
ARUN KUMAR KONDRAGUNTA (SON-IN-LAW) She does cent per cent justice to the responsibility she shoulders as a good politician. She does the same justice to all her roles - as a mother, grandmother and mother-in-law.

FAT RISK Obesity, excess body fat, if not controlled can prove detrimental to health. People across the globe are trying to cope with its horrendous effects. As a result utmost importance is given to diet and exercise. A healthy diet keeps the body weight under control and it is the best way to check this malady. We should know that people tend to put on weight as they grow old their metabolism rate plummets. The risk factors that contribute to obesity can be a complex combination of genetics, socioeconomic factors, metabolic factors and lifestyle choices, among other things. Some endocrine disorders, diseases and medications can also cause weight gain. REASONS Genetics: Your chance of being overweight increases 25% if one or both of your parents is obese. It also influences where your fat gets accumulated - hips or midriff. Metabolic: Metabolic and hormonal factors are not the same for everyone, but they play a role in determining weight gain. Recent studies show that levels of ghrelin, a peptide hormone known to regulate appetite and other peptides in the stomach, play a role in triggering hunger, giving you a feeling of fullness after eating. Lifestyle: Overeating besides a sedentary lifestyle, contributes to obesity. Chances of gaining weight are more if you eat a diet with high red | march 2014 | 118
percentage of calories come from sugary, high-fat and refined foods. Apart from these factors, absence of regular exercise makes it difficult for adults to lose weight. In children, activities that don’t require to burn calories such as watching television or sitting at a computer, contribute to obesity. It is important to understand what exactly is good for us and our metabolism. Hence a proper nutrition plan is important to make sure we get adequate vitamins and minerals. It is found that even sugar-free components may have adverse effects. Our bodies react differently to different foods and fitness programmes and you should listen to what your body tells you. Sometimes obese people lose their connection with their bodies to the point that they are not sure whether they are satisfied with the amount of food they have taken or not. This in itself is a problem because you have to measure the intake of food and eat accordingly. Frugal diet too does not work as starving only triggers hormonal imbalance which takes the body into an emergency mode where it thinks of accumulating all that it gets for the upcoming emergency. Those who lose weight through diet restrictions may regain it once they stop following it. The right combination of diet and workouts is the only solution to this problem.
Simple ways to keep obesity at bay is to eat... • Breakfast without fail • High fibre foods • Raw, leafy green vegetables • Fish, chicken and beans for protein • Healthy nuts and • Get plenty of calcium to make bones stronger CONSEQUENCES & RISKS The risk of diseases and health conditions include depression • Inferiority complex • Coronary heart disease • Type 2 diabetes • Cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon) • Hypertension (high blood pressure) • Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides) • Stroke • Liver and gallbladder disease • Apnoea and respiratory problems • Osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint) • Gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility).

SOWING THE SEEDS OF KNOWLEDGE Modern Education should seed ‘the desire to know’ in students. With this motto perhaps Mr. Amar Gontu, the founder correspondent and Managing Director ventured into the education sector with Amar Concept School and its success has reached a point where people say ‘Alphabets begin with ‘A’ and success with ‘Amar’. Following the overwhelming response it received from the pupils as well as parents, the school started new branches in Rajahmundry, Ravulapalem, Chodavaram, Jami, K Kotapadu and Vizianagaram. Today it has more than 15 branches in the state. Managing Director Mr. Amar started the first school in 2008 with strength of 600 students and from classes 6 to 10 at NAD Kotha Road. One school gave birth to another and the ‘budding’ Amar (School) blossomed into Amar Blossoms. It was followed by Amar IIT Academy and Amar Residential School. The school spread its branches in many other places including Tirupati. Having a strength of around 9000+ students (all branches put together), Amar has made giant strides. Beginning from Kindergarten till Class X, the schools follow well-designed curriculum. The school offers CBSE syllabus from LKG to V Standard and State Syllabus/SSC from VI to X Class, says Mr. Amar. Armed with an engineering degree from VIT, Amar who hails from Guntur landed in Visakhapatnam in 2002. Despite the fact that no one in his family is remotely connected to this field, Amar took his first step as a zone in-charge of a popular educational institution. He believes that a child must understand the concepts of whatever is taught in class and disapproves the
rote method. Along with wife Chandana who is at the helm of the Primary Standard, he runs the Concept School. Kindergarten Since every success story has a starting point, the focus here is on the fundamentals and the endeavour is to hone good qualities like self reliance, curiosity and creativity in pupils. Primary School Students at the primary level are nurtured further with a teacher-student ratio of 30:1. They are exposed to extra-curricular activities. High School The school inculcates a wide range of interests in students at the high school level where the teacher-student ratio is 40:1. Students’ successive excellent track record and mind blowing results in the SSC examination speak volumes about the school’s standards and teaching methods. Amazing Amar Smart Classrooms The spacious classrooms are well ventilated, sufficiently furnished and all of them are equipped with an OH projector. Teachers Amar (School) boasts of a group of highly qualified, competent and committed faculty. The teachers, along with parents, hold weekly meetings to assess students’ performance.
Library and Lab The library has a vast collection of good books. Labs are fully equipped with modern scientific paraphernalia. Sport Joyful learning is about participating in sporting activities. They are a prerequisite at Amar. Adequate facilities are provided to play various outdoor and indoor sports/games such as cricket, football, shuttlecock, tennis etc. and the indoor games like caroms, chess, etc. Extra-curricular Activities Students are trained in public speaking and group discussions to hone their skills. Regular field trips and educational tours are conducted for students so that they gain the advantage of scientific exploration and social exposure with fun. Hostel Facilities Key features •
