e will start with a fun coffee fact. Did you know that the bold, rich coffee Macchiato is basically an espresso with a small amount of foamed milk on top and served in a demitasse cup? Now, this most sought-after beverage is served at Macchiato, the recently launched café at Seethammadhara! Yay! Yes, the coffee connoisseurs are in for a treat. Enter the café and a strong aroma of coffee hits you. Aaahh, nothing like that! If the quirky interior, classic wooden furniture and quaint outdoor seating are not enough to draw you, its extensive range of brews and snacks are sure to spoil you for choice.
Oh, did I just miss an important detail? They serve only ‘organic’ coffee beans! Founder S.Krishna Kumar says, “I used to spend a lot of time in coffee shops during my college days. I mean, who didn’t? So, the purpose of starting Macchiato is to offer a budget-friendly and never-seen-before menu. You will be surprised to know that you can fill your belly for a mere Rs.100. We witness a footfall of nearly 80 per day (mostly software professionals and students). This speaks for the overwhelming response we are receiving. I can assure you that everyone is going gaga over our price and product range. I even request my customers to at least try our signature beverage which is Macchiato Hot Coffee.” Their Macchiato Frappe, Lemon Grass Ginger Tea, Cheese Burger, Spicy Chicken Burger, Macchiato Special Club Sandwich, Chicken Tikka Sandwich, Paneer Sandwich and Veg.Club Sandwich are a must try. Be it French Fries, Maggie, Masala Oats, Potato Wedges, Chilli Garlic Potato Pops, this cosy café has a line of wholesome snacks that goes well with its freshly brewed coffees. For the sweet accompaniments, relish a wide range of ice-creams, pastries and brownies. One can order various flavoured & 3D cakes here. The best part-everything is prepared fresh. Spelling out future plans, he says, “We are planning to give out the franchise in the next six months. We are developing the mobile application where we will provide attractive offers to our customers.” The ambience is kept cool and immensely comfortable with coolers spewing that welcoming waft, in contrast to the spiraling hot steam emanating from the coffee mugs and the delectable dishes.

sn’t it a bit surprising that the city has not sprouted its own share of stand-alone tandoori restaurants? That gap is now being filled thanks to Tandooriwala, the newly opened branch of the popular Mysore-based restaurant chain. They could not have chosen a better location. Sprawled over 1,500 sq.ft., this outlet is set up near Matsya Darshini (fish aquarium). The interior is luxurious with hand-painted murals, adorned with the logos of the cities hosting Tandooriwala’s franchises over the country. While the ground floor has a 24-seating capacity, the first floor can take 41 clients. A separate room on the first floor can be used for a private gathering of 10 people and small occasions. Franchise owners, Rajesh and Sreeja say, “All the masalas, prepared by Chef Shajahan Mohamed Abdul, are procured from Mysore. The chef’s signature recipe is used for all the dishes. Our USP is that we offer a huge range of tandoori dishes which have never been served before in red | october 2017 | 40
the city. Not to forget, this is the place-to-be for all curry lovers. We offer catering and home delivery services. We have a team of 20 people which includes 10 chefs. ” Tandooriwala is home to mouthtingling dishes like Peri Peri Fish Tikka, Pahadi Chicken, Lasooni Chicken Tikka, Lasooni Tandoori Lollipop, yummy Pahadi Tandoori Chicken & a lip-smacking variety of sizzlers. Stand-out options for veggies are Lemon Gobi, Hot & Sour Soup, Adraki Chatpati Mushroom, BBQ Paneer Tikka
Masala, etc. Don’t forget to try their nectarous & quirky-named mocktails – Cuddles on the Beach, Sea Breeze, Wild Cat Cooler, etc. A couple can dine here for an average of Rs.700 (excluding GST). Specifying future plans, they say, “At present, we are trying to attract customers. But yes, very soon we will start a tiffin section.” The restaurant has the definite advantage to attract the beachgoers who are in mood to binge.

This is how the typical conversation goes in every family, “What sweets shall we prepare this year? What is good where?” Get the drift! So, if you want the best of the city’s most delectable delights, then head to this destination called Sarvani Sweets. Besides, they even stock pickles, mixtures, powders, hot snacks and homemade

Don’t be surprised if you find the same taste across all their outlets since it is prepared following same process. is story belongs to that genre which never fails to entice people because it contains all the ingredients
needed to make a inspiring narrationpenury, protracted struggle against odds & eventual victory. Prof.G.Nageswara Rao, Vice-Chancellor, Andhra University proved once again that people can achieve extraordinary success surmounting even dismal circumstances, if they have the determination, courage of conviction, guts and gumption and don’t shy away from hard work. His success sits pretty on his unassuming shoulders. Out of his hectic schedule he carves out time for a leisurely interview. Looking as fresh as if he has just began the day and with a welcoming smile, he settles down for a late evening interview. Articulation is anyway expected of professional teachers, but Prof.Rao has that extra edge-a sense of humour, which makes the conversation smooth and absolutely delightful.
EXCERPTS Down the Memory Lane I come from a very poor family. My parents- the late Mr.Narasaiah and Mrs.Anasuya, used to work as farm hands in Gurazala village in Guntur dist. As the eldest of four siblings and due to beleaguered finances, I was under the constant threat of being taken out of school. It was obviously tough for the family, which is barely making two ends meet, to educate a son. Not only my parents,

but also my siblings had to work hard to get me educated. I studied till 10th standard in Rentachintala. I did my 10+2 and obtained my B.Sc degree from S.K.B.R.Govt. College, Macherla. My teachers goaded my parents and even fought with them, to get me back to school. I feel eternally grateful to all of them. Ignorance Was No Bliss I was so ignorant & unexposed that I went & sat in the same class even after passing out. Our village school
ran classes only up to 5th standard. My teachers had to explain me that there was something called high school and I should move there. My parents then shifted me to my maternal uncle’s house for high school studies. Date of Birth I had no clue which year I was born. The headmaster, who admitted me to the 6th standard, roughly gauged my age and fixed 4th Sept 1957, the day I joined his school, as my date
of birth. I studied under lantern light till my 10th standard as our village did not have power supply. I saw my classmates filling some application form and found out that they were applying for EAMCET. Goaded by friends & to see Vijayawada, I wrote EAMCET. I got a seat in JNTU, Kakinada, but had to settle for B.Sc. Though my journey was always fraught with uncertainties, I crossed each step with great diligence and reached Andhra University (AU) for post-graduation studies. Many Misses & Stints Excelling in NCC and NSS courses, I was selected for Infantry. This time it was my mother’s apprehensions that came in the way. I got many lucrative offers from prestigious organisations like BVK College, CCMB, Hyderabad, ONGC, Dehradun, IISC, Bengaluru, and Durban, South Africa. Some I took up for a short duration and some I rejected outright. AU always tugged at my heart and kept returning. I completed my doctorate in 3 years, after which I was appointed as an Assistant Professor.
No Fall in Standards I have no complaints. We must admit that there is a sea change in learning environs because of the technological advances. When we were studying, there were very limited extra-curricular activities, no smart phones, tablets, computers, etc. Our time used to be spent either on studies or playing a few games or meeting friends. Now, students are exposed to a plethora of activities which smoothen the rough edges in their persona and enrich their intellect.
students in those categories too. Hence, the performance has nothing to do with his background. Take my own case. With parents who were farm hands, could I ever imagine myself earning a doctoral degree or being the Vice-Chancellor of such a prestigious institution? As the Vice-Chancellor It is a great honour to be occupying the seat in which stalwarts like Dr.Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan sat. I must recall here that I did not even think of applying for the post as neither did I have the money power nor any godfathers. Of course, that I would not have used such props is a different thing.
Changing Scenario Earlier, students used to think of career only after the completion of education. But now students mull over career even as they pursue studies. Our government too encourages the students to take a break and oat a start-up. Even the high school boys are developing apps. Students are doing well despite all those activities, which I refuse to call distractions. I have a word of praise for our teachers, who are dedicated and are doing such an amazing job. I don’t believe in making random and generalised remarks. Quota System Why not? These sections were exploited and neglected for centuries. Why grudge them a few privileges? Are students coming from afuent and forward communities, doing spectacular work? There are substandard
Tough Decisions All my decisions were taken at my own free will & they turned out to be the best. In 2000, I got Best Researcher Award. On the convocation day, the principal offered me Assistant Principal’s post of AU College of Science and Technology. I could not say no despite my reluctance to forego my research time.
Ethics and Principles When I was serving as the chief warden of the hostel, some boys from student union came to me seeking money to organise an event. I told them, “I earn only Rs.1,000 extra as a chief warden and some salary for my

teaching. I cannot afford to give you a paisa. Then they asked me to spare money from the hostel funds and I retorted, “That is the student’s money and not mine. Please take it from them.” AU Condition Yes, we are going through a rough patch and need humongous funds to run an institute which is sprawled over 500 acres. The government used to allocate Rs.80-100 cr per annum which was not sufficient even to pay the salaries and pensions. But now it is much better as the block grant has been increased many fold. So, how

do we build a new infrastructure and maintain the existing one? This year, state has sanctioned Rs.300 cr as block grant. We generate some funds from students fees. The buildings are old and require at least Rs.10 cr per annum to keep them fit. Competition I take a positive view of this too. The government is encouraging private universities, giving them sops. This is done purely to encourage a healthy competition among the campuses. People often become complacent in the absence of competition. Teachers may relax and students may take it easy. Now they have to work hard perform or perish. They have to take up challenges and new research.

Future I would like to paraphrase a professor here, “AU is so sacred that nobody can spoil its reputation. We, V-Cs, students and faculty may come and go, but the image of AU shines on forever.” It commands respect not only in the country but across the globe. Check out our alumni, who have brought name and fame to the varsity. My heart swells with pride when I remember that our VicePresident Mr.M.Venkaiah Naidu, passed through our portals. Students & Politics Look at the profile of today’s political leaders. Many of them are doctors, educationists, lawyers & bureaucrats. Many highly qualified people are entering the political arena changing the texture of the field. So it is good if students are well versed with politics. I again cite Mr.Venkaiah Naidu and Dr.Hari Babu, people of high caliber who are making all difference in the political world. They were student leaders and led many campaigns and they were even jailed during emergency. So, universities can create great political leaders too. I see some of them as future Presidents, Vice-Presidents and Prime Ministers.

FAMILY CORNER
HE IS MY BEST FRIEND: NAVYA, DAUGHTER
“
I FELL IN LOVE WITH HIS HUMOUR: VIJAYA KUMARI, WIFE I hail from Guntur, studied B.Sc in Tenali and B.Ed from St.Jospeh’s Convent in Guntur. Soon after, I got a job as a teacher in a government school. I put in four years of service by the time we got married and I took transfer to Vizag. I studied M.A (English) and M.Ed from AU. Right now, I am serving as a teacher in Zilla Parishad High School near Bheemili. Though we have a lot to exchange at the end of the day, neither he interferes with my work nor do I with his. We are
proud parents of two beautiful daughters- Archana and Navya. Both are married and settled in Hyderabad. Archana studied B.Tech (Chemical Engineering) & Navya B.Tech (Instrumentation) from AU. Archana is blessed with two sons and Navya with one. He is never strict with the girls. That leaves me to keep the leash tight on all of them. He is a very doting father, good husband and a jovial person. He takes out time for us despite his busy schedule.
“
HE IS WORTH EMULATING: ARCHANA, DAUGHTER He has worked very hard to reach this position. He is very disciplined and punctual but is never strict with us. We were given all the freedom in the world. Yet, we left the decision to choose our life partners with our parents as we believe they knew the best. I am a national throw ball player. I had to go for tournaments taking time off my studies. I was in a dilemma on how to manage both studies and sports. But he always encouraged me to go for it, without fretting over study hours.
“
He used to guide us, while our mother used to wield the cane. He is more a friend, who sings lullabies for us even now. I had to wake up early in the morning for my CAT coaching. He would be up even before me, boil milk for me, letting mother rest. He proved that a man should also attend to household chores, not just the woman. Without holding our finger, he let us be independent. When I joined my first job in Hyderabad, he urged me to go ahead and face the world. He said, “You know what your goal is. So, work towards it. Do something with your life.” He was never bothered about the marks we scored but told us to understand what we studied. He is highly principled and never outs rules. This is what I want to emulate.

R
emember how Munna Bhai (Sanjay Dutt) brings happiness to those distressed with his Jadoo Ki Jhappi (magical hug) in the film Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. He defies convention to bring back a braindead man to life. In yet another case, he fills the last moments of a cancer patient with joy. That is only one part of palliative care. To know what palliative care is all about, we spoke to Dr.N.S.Raju, Geriatrician, Palliative Care Physician and Managing Trustee of Age Care Foundation (ACF).
EXCERPTS Palliative Care This care is given to patient with chronic or incurable illness at any stage. It can be administered along with curative therapies. It focuses on the patient’s concerns, not on the cause or cure. It should begin with empathetic listening & understanding of the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of patient & his family. Terminal cancer affects the patient’s social life & financial condition. He may be in the ‘denial’ and ‘why me?’ phase. Families feel helpless and look for solutions. This is where palliative care comes in. It is custom-made, which means that we, doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, counsellors and social workers, treat the patient as per his and his family’s wishes. Allaying Fears Often we find patients in ICU, under the care of ward boys and nurses while their kin waits outside, depriving

the patient of the last hour comfort. I recall, when my father was in a similar state, I was sitting in the other room because I could not see him suffer. This is abandonment of one kind. We must make the patient get rid of his fear of being left alone. I see patients crying not out of physical pain, but because their family doesn’t understand their pain. The patient has to be assured of their presence. Sad State-of-Affairs •
Palliative care is considered as the last resort. Research shows that it is more efficacious if it is given soon after the diagnosis of illness, besides the treatment.
•
The present health care system focuses more on acute care than relief from suffering. For example, chemotherapy comes with side effects, making the treatment more unbearable than the illness. Besides administering medicines,
we have to motivate and counsel them. Oncologist can do it, but they just may not have the time or sometimes, the necessary will. What is more disheartening is that our state has not yet formulated the palliative care policy. There is no training facility in the state. •
Take the case of morphine and other essential narcotic drugs required for palliative care. They are available in a few centers. Most of the government and private hospitals do not stock them. Sadly, doctors are not trained in pain management and use of opioids.
Kerala Model Kerala accounts for 3% of India’s population, but provides 2/3rd of palliative care services. There are 925 Palliative Care Centres in India, out of which 840 are in Kerala. It is now a World Health Organization(WHO)
demonstration site for palliative care. People from all over the world go there to get trained. The module succeeded because of the community involvement, which is part of the state’s ethos. The awareness is so high there that even the children collect micro-donations and auto-drivers know which hospital is best suited for which treatment. The volunteers are a good link between the communities and the service-providers. Genesis of ACF I got trained in community geriatrics and have been volunteering with Sneha Sandhya- a society for senior citizens since 2006. In 2012, I attended the 2nd International Congress on Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine, New Delhi, where I had the honour of listening to Dr.M.R.Rajagopal (Founder Chairman of Pallium India, Trivandrum). Call it a defining moment or turning point, but that changed my life. I went for training to Trivandrum. We already planned to start a foundation & registered it as a charitable trust in Aug 2012. I was the only doctor trained in palliative care at that time. We joined forces with the hospice started by St.Joseph Hospital and since then we have been running it. In 2013, Dr.Vidya Viswanath joined us. Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, a unit of Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, started operations at Aganampudi under the able guidance of Dr.D.Raghunadha Rao, Director and a very distinguished oncologist. The ACF is working with the centre. Till date, 500 patients received our services in the hospice. Our team consists of five doctors (volunteers), eight nurses and six active volunteers. We run nine clinics for geriatric care,

seven in the city, one in Paderu and Chodavaram. We provide care to senior citizens, free investigations, consultation and medicines. All our services are free irrespective of the financial condition of the patient. Most of the patients come with common age-related problems like diabetes, hypertension, etc. Unforgettable Cases I recall this girl who lost her parents at a very young age and was raised by her grandmother. At the age of 22, she was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. She was operated & eventually cured. After a few years, she got married. Unfortunately, at the age of 32, she developed another rare cancer & underwent surgery & chemotherapy.
The grandmother at one stage lost all interest in her. Isn’t it sad to be turned away by someone, who has raised you and that too at a time, when you need them the most? Her husband was understanding and took care of her till the last moment. In yet another case, I got a call at 9:30 pm to attend to a patient at home. He was suffering from malignancy in the abdomen and was in extreme pain. I gave him a tablet and the pain reduced instantly. When I was getting into my car, his daughter, with tears in her eyes, said, “You are the
only doctor who came home to visit my father.” This made me realise the importance of home care. We are working to reinforce this facility. Need of the Hour Every hospital should have at least one doctor and two nurses trained in this stream. It is a 30-day course. There is a 10 day sensitisation course available, which every doctor irrespective of their specialty can undergo. Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital is equipped to impart training for doctors and nurses. The government doctors & nurses can get trained in batches. We signed an MoU with the Pallium India, with an objective to create awareness and promote access to palliative care and controlled medicines for pain relief. We want to
create awareness over palliative care services and access to necessary narcotic drugs in 13 districts across the state, as a part of this project. Future Plans We plan to expand our out-patient and home care services in the city. We plan to take our facility to Vizianagram and Srikakulam. We will strive to encourage other organisations and people to start similar projects in their areas across the 13 districts of the state. red | october 2017 | 53

Sky is for her By V.Sarada
P
ilot Snigdha is on Cloud Nine, not physically in the flying machine she handles with great elan, but in spirit and energy. Why not? At an age when many of her peers grope to keep their feet firmly on the ground, she has reached the enviable heights of success by logging in 20,000 hours of commercial flying. Right now she is at the threshold of a life-altering and ecstatic adventure. Yes, to be precise, she is shortly taking off into the wonderful world of motherhood. We catch the ‘hi-fly’ lady taking a short break and substituting air safety manuals with What to Expect When You're Expecting. The First Officer, Jet Airways, talks of her tryst with aviation in detail and explains at what altitude she is cruising right now. Her eloquent eyes and enchanting smile embellish her unassuming disposition and articulate narration.
How did your family react? My mother was happy but my father was initially skeptical. He wanted us to go for civil services as he himself was an IRS officer. Did they fly in the aircraft piloted by you? Not yet, but during my training days in Miami, I did y my father.
EXCERPTS Mother, an air hostess and father, a bureaucrat turned Member of Parliament - what made you opt for piloting? I was introduced to aviation at a young age. My mother was an air hostess with Air India. My visits to the cockpit used to thoroughly intrigue and make me wonder how a plethora of buttons of the cockpit enables the pilots to y this enormous aircraft, carrying hundreds of passengers. red | october 2017 | 54
What was the first time like? A dream come true. I was thrilled to control the aircraft. I was 22 years old at that time and had gone for ying training after obtaining my B.Tech degree. Now I am working for Jet Airways. Did you fly big birds? It took 8 months to complete my commercial pilot training in Dean
International Flying Academy, Miami, Florida. I y the Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft. It has a passenger capacity of 162. What are the challenges? Every ight, every takeoff and every landing is a challenge in itself. However, I am confident in handling them or emergencies. Thanks to the intense training. Were people nervous about being flown by a young pilot? Surprisingly, no. I have always encountered people who have faith on the stripes I sport. On condition of our aircrafts... Every aircraft undergoes rigorous and mandatory checks lid down by the airline & DGCA to maintain
her airworthiness. So, there is no scope of ying substandard crafts. Female pilot, any bias? I have never faced anything like that. I was appreciated more for being a lady pilot. I aced all exams and earned a lot of appreciation for my ying skills. There are some professions that are gender neutral and I am lucky to be a part of one. The biggest change seen... The big inux of women as cockpit crew. Earlier, there were merely a handful of lady pilots. What opportunities does aviation offer women? Aplenty. Commercial piloting is a good career option even for
women as airlines are supportive and help them balance their family and professional lives. Favourite airport landing site... Night landing at Mumbai airport is my favourite! One has to sit in that seat to know how it feels and to experience the thrill of landing on a brightly lit runway. Most memorable flight... Once after facing severe turbulence due to bad weather at Kolkatta, we landed safely with a smooth touchdown. All the passengers, while disembarking, sent appreciation and respect our way. Who is your aviation hero? In our airlines, Capt.Harleen Sarna is my idol. I have learnt a lot from her. The other icon is Capt.Chesley Sullenberger who saved the lives of all the passengers by

successfully landing an aircraft on the Hudson River, New York. A little about your personal life... My father, Dr.Pandula Ravindra Babu took VRS from Indian Revenue Services as a Commissioner and then became a Member of Parliament Lok Sabha representing Amalapuram as a TDP candidate. My mother, Suneetha R.Babu, served as an Air Hostess in Air India for 35 years. My younger sister Shruthi, who studied at National Institute of Design, is now working as a lead designer in the communications design team at Godrej Consumer Products Ltd., Mumbai. Any plans to land in politics? Politics is not my cup of tea. My future plan is to become a commander and my goal is to set an example for my children and be a role model who balances both family and career efficiently. Do you like to see your baby emulate you? As a mother to be, I want my child to grow up to be a good human being first. He/she should stand on his/her own feet and be a role model to his/her own generation.
Top flying tip? Pay attention to the announcements. The best flying advice ... Fly the aircraft safely first. One question you face the most... Don't you ever get scared? The best part of your job... Watching the sun rise at 35,000 feet above the earth. Things in your pilot's bag... Licences, documents and an iPad If you could fly anywhere today ... John F. Kennedy airport for an amazing Manhattan view.
Your tip to aspirants... It is an exciting but a challenging career. Pursue only if you have the passion for it. ...to young women Come and explore, it is a whole other world out here. I would say, go for it!
HER THOUGHTS • There is a misconception among people that aviation, especially commercial piloting is a man's world and that it is not a feasible career option for women. That is a myth. • In this industry, women's needs are very much catered to. For example, you are given ample maternity leave without you losing out on seniority, allowing lady pilots to make a mark in the industry today. • We have a lot of lady captains holding senior positions in our airlines, even as instructors and examiners.

HIS RACE TO

abric- an item to which the word enough does not apply. C’mon, let us admit that the joy of buying it never gets over. Have you ever come across a woman who doesn’t enjoy mixing-and-matching, playing with colours and trying out various blouse designs to team with saris? Offering all that that satisfies the feminine whims and wishes is Sowbhagya. The credit of building this mighty place goes to Y.Naga Ashish, who just in a short span of time, made the outlet a go-to-place for all those matching dilemmas. So, what’s his story? Read on...
EXCERPTS The First Step I took to the world of fashion soon after my B.Tech. I grew up amidst textures, scents and colours. I am from textile traders family. I set up a 500 sq.ft. store, Sowbhagya Matchings. To our absolute delight, it gained instant popularity. Windfall I was certain that our extensive collection would be an irresistible lure for fashionistas, but I did not except such an overwhelming response. Encouraged by this, I set up a 4,000 sq.ft.-Sowbhagya Multi Matchings in 2017. As far as my knowledge goes, in the entire state, ours is the biggest and most sprawled out outlet.
travel and meet people of all colours and creeds. I network and keep track of what is in demand. I am choosy and have an eye for detail. I handpick my stock. So, my shop is full of latest collection and the best selected items. Changes & Challenges Demonetisation and GST regime did take a toll and put us under
pressure. Demonetisation reduced the number of footfalls. In fact, we wanted to go for an expansion in last year, but demonetisation threw us out of gear. We opened our 2nd store in Feb 2017. Then came the GST. Customers’ reluctance to pay that additional 5% made us add that ‘pinching extra’ in the product cost. Thus we solved the problem.
Selection & Collection Our trade gives us opportunities to SOWBHAGYA MULTI MATCHINGS
Spotting the Pulse I am adept at understanding the popular taste. Earlier, people used to prefer red, blue, green and maroon but now they try out peach, brown, grey and nude. I notice that they prefer Banarasi and Tussar silk fabric these days. USP What makes us different from others is that we don’t repeat any design, however popular it may be. We customise patterns on fabric, following the customer’s taste. This makes our fare exclusive. We have 10 to 15 colours in every design. You won’t get this range anywhere else.

HIS FAVOURITES
Team Spirit I could build a well-knit team. We are 40 people working here. They are thoroughly trained & know what the customer wants. I understand the problems they face as I work along with them. At the same time, I give them adequate freedom to learn and improvise. These are the people whom I can call and tell, “I can’t make it to the shop today. Can you run the show for me?” The show goes on even in my absence. They know my working style.

Varied Experiences All of us face rude or angry individuals at one point or the other. How you handle the situation is what defines your trade acumen. Handle it well, you are bound to have the customer coming to you again, otherwise, there is every chance of his turning away from you forever. You must lend a patient ear to them as an unhappy customer is always the most honest. It gives us opportunity to learn about our lacunae and set them right.
Song: Inspirational ones
Inspiration My parents, Mr.Y.Jai Baba & Mrs.Y.Dhana Laxmi are my strength. My father handles the accounts and my mother, who is a homemaker, drops in to look into the maintenance of the store. They made me believe that I could achieve anything with determination and dedication. I aspire to be like my father, who is always at peace with himself and seless. He has gone through many ups and downs. He cares

Build good relations with your customers and be ready to face challenges and changes. Future Plans To get married. We have some big plans for the store. Right now, the groundwork is going on.

I learnt the right diction as Sandeep was kind enough to send me voice notes of the lines, which I kept listening to and replicated. Thanks to which I ended up knowing every word’s meaning, pause, stretch and emotion. The only setback is that you cannot improvise as it is not your mother tongue. I did break down in the middle as there was too much pressure, but then nothing comes easy. We ended up shooting the climax on the first day, which has the maximum number of dialogues. It was my first day and I was under the radar. I had to prove to everyone that I could act and do justice to the character. It was quite difficult. What is in the pipe line? I am currently listening to stories but have not signed any film so far. Your criterion to select a film... Not the producer, actor or director, but the story and how passionate they are about it. I am looking for a team that is very hard working and dedicated. I do not want to just be an eye-candy. I am looking for something that will give me ample space to perform. Your dream role? I think every role I do, I live like it is my dream one. I want to portray
different characters and do justice to each of them. I have grown up doing theatre and they teach us to treat every role as if it was our first and last role. However, I wish I could do a sci-fi role. I feel there is still time for something like that to happen in this industry. What keeps you awake at night? I am quite nerdy and geeky so I read a lot. As an actor, I feel I need to be mature to understand the depth of roles and that experience only comes with reading. I watch a lot of movies and series. I do not watch series episode wise, it has to be binge watching only. Nowadays when I find time, I just sleep! Favourite shows? I am a big fan of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. It is perpetually playing on my laptop. Out of the new series, I really enjoy watching Stranger Things. Advice to your younger self? I would ask myself not to stress so much and chill a little. What things in life are still a mystery to you? Many! I am very confused in life. Things like the hierarchy of a man and woman is something I don’t understand. Why using words like sex and periods are still a taboo? I am not angry about it. It is just that
THIS IS ME AND I WOULD RATHER BE
I DO NOT WANT TO CHANGE WHO I AM,
HONEST THAN BE TWO FACED.
I do not know why it happens. Another thing is that why do women always need to be perfectly waxed? I have hairy arms and legs and that is not a secret. Why should I look perfect all the time? Why are men not expected to? This whole concept of being fair to be beautiful or thin to look nice is alien. Men are allowed to say what they want but a woman cannot.

How did you bag Arjun Reddy? I got a call from a coordinator. I am not from this industry and did not know the way about. So, it all sounded like a farce and did not give it any importance. Later, I spoke to director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, who asked me to come down to Hyderabad. I was asked to do a look test. However, not once did I feel uncomfortable. They loved the shoot and the storyline just blew my mind. Was it his story telling ability or the plot that made you say yes? His faith in the film and the story, too. I believe that a bad director can spoil a good story & a good director can make the worst story look amazing. Anyway, I had the best of both. Did you consult anyone before signing on the dotted lines? No one had a say in this. My folks were against me getting into this industry. I went with my gut feeling as I did not want to blame anyone if it went wrong. How long ago was this and how has it been ever since? It has been two years. Nothing has changed apart from the fact that now I am a known face.
What do you mean by ‘nothing has changed’? I played the role of a lead actress in life’s movie. I told myself that everything around me was a set with a script and would finish soon. That is how I survived my college days! Not much has changed internally ever since I started Arjun Reddy. The only change has been in the people around me. Suddenly everyone wants to know me. People who did not want to talk to me earlier are trying to get through to me. And of course, the unconditional love that I am getting from my fans.
What about fame? I never wanted to be an actress for the fame or money. I wanted to be an actress because I love the profession, cameras and the feeling of being in front of them. Are you outspoken? Actors always want to sound politically correct and I am an opinionated girl. The difference was, back then I was not quoted and now I am. I do not want to change who I am. I am accused of being arrogant after my first hit. People do not realise that I had these views right from the start. Secondly, I am a shy person who
I WANT TO DO DIFFERENT CHARACTERS AND DO JUSTICE TO EACH OF THEM AS IF IT IS MY FIRST AND LAST ROLE.
does not open up easily. I would rather have a few friends who love me for the person I am, than many, who like the fake me. How has Arjun Reddy changed you as a person? I think I have become a lot like Preeti (my character). She is strong and has her head in the right place.
You want to be known for... I don’t want to be known as just another pretty looking girl, but as a performer. I like it when people praise my performance and not the way I look. I speak my mind because I want people to know who I am and what I believe in. I am imperfect and happy with that. You cannot please people all the time. I do not judge people and expect the same from them.
Your experience with TV... It was just one episode that I did for Crime Patrol and one for Man Main Hai Visshwas because I had friends who were a part of it and urged me to do it. TV was never my cup of tea. I get bored easily. So living a character on a daily basis is not an option for me.
How did you dub without knowing the language? I do understand a little bit, but I am extremely shy to speak it. I know I make mistakes and hence, avoid it. Dubbing was difficult but I insisted and it was decided during our narration. I believe that the voice is the sole of a character. So I mugged up my dialogues. Thankfully, I had adequate time to do so.
guests simply rave over them. Objective As I said, the present generation knows about pizzas and burgers, but not about our rich fare of yesteryears. We want to dig out the best from the past and serve to the present generation. We aspire to be a special restaurant that happily serves that typical and genuine Telugu cuisine. Target Market No such targets whatsoever. We are here to serve guests who enjoy good food, presented in hygienic conditions. We are able to do so because we go that extra mile and maintain high standards as far as quality and hygiene are concerned. Over these four years, we earned the customer’s faith and we go to any length to preserve it. Holding the Flock Together We take raw hands, train and mould them as per our needs. Eventually, they become part of our family. Thanks to our staff, we are here. Nearly 80% of our staff has been with us from the start because of the healthy & happy working environs. I enjoy a great rapport with my team. I am with them in the hour of need. I help them without any hesitation when a worker or his relative falls ill or a staffer wants an extra day off. At Ulavacharu All my time (9:00 am to 11:30 pm everyday) is spent at the outlets. I have no other vocation or any interest. We brothers visit both the places every day. While one stays at one property, the other takes care of the other. Areas of Work Both of us look after everythingfrom the kitchen to the service. We exchange ideas, mull over
them & discuss them threadbare. They are implemented only after all this. Both of us subscribe to innovation as we aspire to give to our guests what they never, ever tasted before.

Reviews & Response Reviews and feedback are very vital for our business. Luckily, we have been receiving encouraging feedback all through. We need to pivot our tasks on the customer tastes because our endeavour is to see guests leave Ulavacharu satiated and happy. I recall with pride that we had the good fortune of serving the former President, Mr.Pranab Mukherjee. He relished our dishes. Strategies Our strategy is very simple. Make good food and let it speak for our hard work and innovation.
“ WE ARE ONE OF THE FEW PIONEERS WHO INTRODUCED THEME-BASED RESTAURANTS TO THE CITY. Restaurant Owner It may be God’s gift or blessing. You will be surprised to know that I remember the taste of food I ate 25 years ago. This ability comes very handy for me as the owner of a food joint. Tips to Aspirants I advise them to go in for this business only if they can talk, walk and sleep food. This is one trade where you cannot satisfy everyone. However hard you may try, it cannot always be perfect. You are almost there if the taste of the food and hygiene of the place are taken good care of. Don’t sink huge money in the venture because it cannot be recovered in a short time. We see
many people closing their outlets, unable to stand cutthroat competition in this field. Future Plans If God and time permit we wish to open one branch in every city. I might open an organic restaurant or a patisserie as I love pastries. In Kitchen Cabinet We keep a strict vigil on what goes into it and comes out of it. We let only branded products on our shelves and we monitor their movement on hourly basis. Your Favourites I enjoy the biryani from Cafe Bahar in Basheerbagh and love the brownies from Labonel. At Home Sometimes I do cook. As I spend most of my time at work, I know each and every recipe by heart. Bitter Taste When I don’t get the meal of my liking in other restaurants, I do not criticise. I know the nitty-gritty of this business and the pitfalls. Things may go wrong somewhere. Hence, you cannot judge them by one mistake. We know how difficult it is. red | october 2017 | 33

t is sheer passion for the food industry that made Vijay Reddy join his elder brother Vinay in establishing & running Ulavacharu that took the twin cities by storm. While the name itself is a headturner, the fare in the restaurants has become the talk of the town. Vijay takes off from where his brother left and talks of his role in this success story. Passion & Pull Our parents, Mrs.Subhashini and the late Mr.Sambasiva Reddy brought us up with great discipline. I came to the city to study MBA in Osmania University. My passion for the food industry could not keep me away and propelled me into this field. We, brothers, have been working together, unobtrusively sharing our concepts and perceptions. Back Home We don’t take the work and work pressure to our dining table at home. We carve out time to discuss the day’s business at work place and keep each other in the loop.
Opinions I am very vocal about my point of view. I discuss the issues concerning the industry with discerning friends and relatives. More importantly, I lend a keen ear to complaints. I consider them as the steps of learning. Telugu Cuisine It seems to be attracting even people from other states. Hyderbad is a mini-India, housing people from all the states. We have heterogeneous guests. The way they savour our food speaks volumes of the popularity of our delicacies. Etched in Memory I had the good fortune of meeting Super Star Rajinikanth once. To my utter delight and surprise, he said, “I get food packed from Ulavacharu, whenever I come to Hyderabad.” Of course, such compliments come from many celebrities often. These pats goad us to perform better and improve our fare. These are the moments that make me happy and proud to be the owner of Ulavacharu. Serving Society We distributed food to innumerable needy people when Chennai was ravaged by oods. We also run a free buttermilk kiosk at the Jubille Hills check post during summers. We participate in many welfare

campaigns like Clean India, etc. PR Practices We are more particular about customer satisfaction, than monetary gains. We strive to maintain good relations with people, constantly interacting with them. No Regrets None at all. I find everything about this business is fascinating. Introducing different menus is challenging but extremely satisfying. I hope it is not irrelevant if I say many restaurants today are taking a leaf out of our book and use our recipes. Choice Besides the fare we ourselves offer, I have a few favourite dishes. I simply love street food and authentic Hyderabad biryani. Next Rung Yes, I most certainly like to hand down the tradition of serving authentic Telugu food to my children when they are prepared to take it up. Ulavacharu must live on for generations. Only then all those dishes which are getting relegated to back burner will survive. I certainly feel that these heavenly delicacies which were invented and savoured by our forefathers should be preserved for posterity.

fter having dedicated over 20 years of her life to the fashion industry, Keerthi Reddy is obviously a known name in the
circuit. She has been running her design studio Valka and recently opened The Deccan Story too. She knows exactly what she wants and is well equipped with perfect entrepreneurial skills, This makes the conversation with her real fun. We caught up with the lovely lady to know more about her journey, career and life...
The Deccan Story- how did it happen? People today are more aware of fashion and what they want – they like to be spoilt for choice – before they buy anything. This has resulted in a huge growth in the fashion market. From where I see it, this is going to continue to become more competitive and demanding. I knew for certain that that was the right time to venture into a multi-designer project, catering to the fast evolving and suave clientele of Hyderabad. That was how The Deccan Story was born and has been catering to the fashionistas of the city.

What about the tagline - GatherShop - Tell a Story? Have you ever thought about the stories each and every garment in your closet tells? No, right? Look through your wardrobe and you will understand what I mean. Every piece of clothing we have, has a story to it – which is what we have tried to highlight. Inspired by the weavers, textiles and designers – we talk about the fashion fairytale that comes with each outfit. How do you handpick the pieces and designers who work you? What I was going to display had to
be in sync to who I wanted as my clientele. So that was one criteria, while the other was the cut and fit, with a perfect combination of fabrics put together with a subtle and sensible contemporary air. Could you name a few... Abhijeet Khanna, Abhinav Mishra, Bageecha, Desert Shine, Ekam, Incheetape, Joy Mitra, Kavita Bhartia, Kenelle, Kritika Dawar, Mansi Malhotra, Pratima Pandey, RAR, Ridhi Suri, Sahil Kochar, Salt and Spring, Samant Chauhan, Sawan Gandhi, Siddharth Bansal, Mine of Design, Needle Dust, Noorah by J and Slori.
The journey from Valka to The Deccan Story... After making inroads into the industry through my fashion store Valka where we created and customisied bridal wear, The Deccan Story was born to satisfy the needs & demands of customers who prefer ready-to-wear. What is the difference between being a designer & housing the other designers? Not too different. It is just about catering to more people with wider options. Whilst my specialty was
What are the changes you observed in the field over the last two decades? Fashion apparel industry has significantly evolved through the decades. It is obvious as 20 years is a long time to grow, adapt and evolve. Whether it is a sari or salwar kameez or just about wearing a kurta with jeans, our women have managed to adapt various trends in fashionable clothing without compromising on the beauty. What changes do you observe taking place in the demands of brides? Even the most conservative apparels have been modified to hold an urban look
How do you stay updated? Through taking some time to read magazines. A quick stroll through social media allows me to catch up with what is trending and in vogue. How many people work for you? I have a total skilled manpower of more than 100 people. How would you rate Hyderabad as a market? Hyderabad is making its mark on the fashion map. Our designers have made their mark on all national platforms such as Lakme and Amazon Fashion Week – making all of us extremely proud.

What about Valka? Synonymous with handloom bridal trousseaux, carefully handcrafted and hand embellished, the Valka feature is interwoven with over 2000 clients in the past two decades. Our label is a story of princesses in the making of their bridal ensembles. This is not another fable of lost glass slipper, but of women who want to shine in their full power and glory on their big day.
bridal wear, I wanted to open new windows in design elements for the fast growing fashion conscious Hyderabadi denizens whose tastes are growing fast and beyond.
COMPETITION IS INEVITABLE. I STRONGLY
What is it that sets you apart from the others? Competition is inevitable. I strongly feel it can be healthy and make you better. There is no point in being alone in any vocation as there will be no scope to upping yourself. Especially in this field of fashion, it is quite healthy as there are people who need clothes all the time and they deserve to have ample options to be able to pick from. What sets us apart is our loyalty to customers that extends beyond our regular business hours.

What are the hot sellers? Most designer outfits are selling quite fast. How do you attend to your brides? By way of appointments for consultation and having a designated fashion assistant to look after their special needs. We curate the entire outfit from start to end, depending on what our bride wants. most of them are handpicked by me and each of them is brilliant in their own way. Where do you head to, to shop? There is not one particular place that I go shopping to. I end up wherever my mind sways to. What is your personal sense of style? It would mostly be Indian outfits with a sense of air.

ollowing his passion for diamonds and jewellery, Jibran Sharif not only started his own line of fine jewellery, but also opened a store recently. A firm believer in the maxim-let the product do all the talking and publicity, this young man is known for his quality products and designs. His better half Maha is his pillar of support and in step with him in every endeavour. We went into the household of this couple to understand his work and their relationship better.
F AN ENTREPRENEUR By Anahita Ahuja
Why did you take up jewellery designing? Soon after I completed my Intermediate studies, my father wanted me to study diamond grading and gemology. He felt that this field has always been with limited families over the years and hence wanted me to pick up the tricks of the trade early in life. That is why I started to learn everything related to jewellery- right from diamond grading, gemology, designing red | october 2017 | 40
and diamond cutting. To gain knowledge in this field, I went to various institutes. Which aspect in this trade attracts you the most? I feel the word diamond itself gets people excited and they want to know more about it. Initially, it was my curiosity that got me started. Soon it turned into a passion. My fondness grew as I started learning about diamonds and finally, decided to make a career in this field.
What is the best and worst part of your business? The worst part about working with diamonds is that you have to be always careful when it comes to security. A simple mistake under your lens, while buying diamonds, can cost you a lot, especially because its price changes drastically, depending on very minute details. It is a game of the best eye.
The best part about dealing with diamonds is they are the sought after investments, besides being a woman’s best friend. It’s value in the market has been forever increasing. Where do you source your gems from? Mostly, we source our diamonds from South Africa and from across the country. Coloured stones are procured from many other countries. What is your process like of creating a piece? To begin with, we discuss design. Then the final design is sent to our factory for the production where the minute detailsfrom the diamond setting, to the polish and finishing of product- are checked. Then only it comes to us or gets delivered to the customer. Tell us more about men’s jewellery. These days, men too have become very fashion conscious. Apart from buying clothes, shoes and watches, a lot of men are wearing accessories. That is what made me come up with gold and diamond accessories for men. I have rose gold and diamond bracelets, diamond buttons and cufinks with their initials engraved on it.
from my own home. I am blessed with 3 daughters and I call them my Charlie's Angels. I design jewellery for my girls on their birthdays since gold and diamonds are something which are reusable and at the same time a good investment. That is when I thought I could end up catering to a lot of kids for the same by starting a kids’ line. What do you specialise in? We specialise in light weight jewellery and we use a lot of fancy diamonds. Our finish is the best in the city, I can assure you this. Which is your favourite piece so far? It is under process and I will unveil it very soon. Just to give you a hint, it will be a diamond choker. Where is your workshop? We have our own manufacturing unit here in Hyderabad and few pieces are manufactured in Hong Kong and Jaipur. What are the aspects you look into? Since my clients come only on appointment, most of my time goes in handling the customers and during the rest of the time, I look into the finishing of my jewellery.
How are your designs different from others in the market? It is not right for me to say anything. I suggest you visit our store and experience the difference. What is your favourite part of designing? Without a moment of doubt, the best part of designing a piece of jewellery is when my ideas and thoughts are coming to the forefront. I try to focus on the whole piece evenly rather than on one aspect. How do you customise? I am very passionate about my jewellery and while customising, I see to it that my customer gets something which is affordable but at the same time is very beautiful. Beauty of the final product is more important than anything else. One reason to come to Jibran Jewels... Of course, for the designs and finishing. I can assure you that you would fall in love with each piece that we create here.
YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH EACH PIECE THAT WE CREATE AT JIBRAN JEWELS.
What was your biggest fear? Everyone has their own fears while starting something new and different. I had my own too because I was trying to create jewellery which is not regularly seen in the market. However, while designing or choosing a design, I wanted to run in between the lines where both the old generation and the new generation should like and appreciate the designs.
What about jewellery for babies? This idea of making baby jewellery came to my mind red | october 2017 | 41
COMPATIBILITY METER: She is beautiful inside out and keeps me grounded: Jibran Maha is extremely calm, quiet, understanding and witty. She is a strong support system in my life. She takes care of every small thing that I like and dislike and is a wonderful mother to my kids. It amazes me as to how she is always polite to people! I have never seen her being rude to anyone, which is the best part of her. It does not seem like I am
married to her, we are more like we’re dating. We have great chemistry. I do not have to think twice before I speak to her. I can spend hours with her alone. We never get bored of each other. She is quite a perfectionist as she wants to be the best in whatever she does. I am grateful to her for having stood by me at times I have needed her the most, whether it was business or personal issues. I do not know anyone who does not like her and I don’t fault them – she is a seless person who is always there when needed. HER FAVOURITES: Car - La Ferrari Meal out - Adaa, Taj Falaknuma (she finds it the most romantic place) Movie – Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge
What are the pieces you are working on now? Since the wedding season is soon approaching, I am creating uncut diamond necklaces with polished diamonds – which is quite a never -seen-before combination.
Book - I am sure she is not into it. Shopping day - She drags me to every corner of the city, not just one mall or a store. Colour - Black Artiste - Ed Sheeran Song - Pehla Nasha
What are your other interests? Travelling and cricket. How do you balance work and family? There is no simple formula to attain a perfect balance. All you need to do is never forget that both are important. Whenever I get an early off from work, I do make it a point to go out for dinner or a family outing by just not limiting it to the weekends. How would you like to spend a holiday? It all depends on the people I go with on a holiday with. If it is with family, I would love to go to a place where I can relax and spend time with my wife and kids and if it is with friends, then it has to be a party place.

Flower - Lilies Dessert - Anything with chocolate she would hog.
He is an amazing person and a true gentleman: Maha I do not want to sound cheesy, but I think he is the best and I am thankful to God for making me his better half. He is not only an amazing husband, but also a doting father and devoted son. Jibran and I have similar likes, dislikes and tastes. We do not keep any barriers in our relationship as he knows how to keep me happy and vice versa. I have learnt a lot from him in life and that is how our relationship grows each day. I have learnt how to enjoy life. Not too many people know that he has got great culinary skills and is quite a professional at making some authentic Hyderabadi dishes.
HIS FAVOURITES: Car - La Ferrari Movie- DDLJ and Troy Book - Godfather Shopping Day - He prefers shopping online. Colour - Black and white Artiste - Rihanna and Enrique Song - He has got a huge list. Flower - Rose Dessert - Trufe pudding I make. Meal out - He is not particular about the place, he is more into tasty food.

fter starting his career right from the first year of college, Vikas Reddy has always known what he wants from life and does not
shy away from hard work. Owner of the photography and advertising firm Pixel Army and a tea brand Chai Kahani, this 24-year-old is a bundle of energy. He has learnt from his mistakes and experiences and is extremely proud of all of them. Currently working on both his babies, the young man took out some time to fill us with a few details about his life and career plans. Read on to know his story...
Why did you start so early? I had been into graphic designing and photography right from my school days. It was not professional. I bought my first DSLR when I was studying Intermediate. The wedding photography market had started picking up when I was in college. I knew it was the right time & jumped into it. That was how the brand Pixel Army came into being. My friend and I initially offered photography services and later added a branding Vector. Tell us about its progress. My partner’s friend gave us our first chance to do an event photography. as a platform to showcase our work and people loved it.
On covering 300 weddings... It is an enriching journey. These weddings have become a part of our lives. We get so involved with our clients that they are now our friends. Most of our wedding assignments come through our old clients, proving that word-of-mouth publicity works.
How do you cope with the market? Patience, passion and learning every day. For you a wedding assignment is another day work, but for them it is the only day. So, give your 100%. You should enter this industry only if you are passionate. Lastly, to cope with the present or to be actively involved in the current trends, you need to constantly upgrade yourself.
Did you think it would be this big? For sure! Success is sure to follow, if you are passionate. We started early to be ready for the big market. I also strongly believe in zero expenditure on publicity as I feel your work should speak, not you. We used social media
Juggle education & work... Yes, it was tough. But I used to find enough time for my studies. Luckily, I scored 70% in engineering. I am glad my life went the way it did.
USP you capitalise on... My USP is my product. We have spent more time on our product than our business model. What are the aspects you look into? I look into everything. Right from the making of the product (new recipes) to service and marketing – I try and manage almost everything. Being a start-up, we have to spend more time on details. We have spent almost two months in just getting our recipe right. How do you handle the businesses? We have a very big team for weddings so they help me out. Some of my helpers are there right from the start. At present, I am spending a little more time on Chai Kahani because it is just one-year-old and we still have a lot of things to sort out and settle.
Where do you see yourself after five years? I hope to touch Hyderabad, Vizag and Bengaluru in the next two years, if everything goes as per my plan. We plan to start 20+ stores next year. Based on the response, we shall set up stores in different cities. Let us hope that in the next five years I can make this a 20 m-dollar valued company. Tell us about the hardships you have faced. Yes, it is not at all easy. But I feel nothing comes for free or easily - so one needs to make continuous effort, put in good work and take right decisions to grow. I sold my bike to procure the first camera. At that point it did look like a big step, but it helped us kick-start our work. We lost our first full frame body in less than a week, which was bought with money earned from a year’s hard work. There are many such incidents that have been difficult, but then you deal

waiting for the right time.
How do you deal with rivalry? Our competition is the streetwala chai guys and not in terms with the taste but with the pricing. Five-six brands have come up in the past one year. Our brewing technique itself is a little different, compared to the regular commercial ones.

From Pixel Army to Chai Kahani... I would not call it a shift. I had this idea of making chai a brand for almost five years. I was just waiting for the right time to enter the market. I needed to get my finances ready. When I oated this idea, people said that they were not ready to spend some extra money on chai or take branded chai. Our city has evolved a lot in the last two to three years, giving me confidence that it was the right time to serve my concoction.

lovely walk down a verdant green alley opens up to this small but cozy outdoor space. It is just the right size for you to hang out with a bunch of friends or even spend some ‘me’ time. The welcoming, laidback setting, good music and scrumptious food make Tabula Rasa-The Bar - the place you want to go back to over and over again. Spread across 4,500 sq.ft. of indoor and outdoor space, it is located on Road No.35, Jubilee Hills. A casual bar and cafe, this eatery is known for its rustic and sophisticated ambience where one can sit and relish delicious food with live music. Besides, there is an in-house DJ, specialising in Deep House and Techno, who plays foot-tapping and mesmerising tracks. This place will make you drool with its aromatic continental cuisine. All the more, the exhaustive menu makes it hard to decide what to eat and what to leave. The best part-the food is prepared using fresh ingredients and is delicious, mouth-watering, very filling and beautifully presented on a platter. Prompt services and impeccable hospitality double the pleasure of savouring authentic fare here. The guests can indulge in some lip-smacking continental finger-food and European food. Tempting burgers and sandwiches are not to be missed. The coffee they serve is an absolute delight and heavenly. So, drop in after your work to unwind or spend a day working here – either ways you will not be disappointed.

ollGate-The Eating House is the city’s first restaurant that is inspired by the theme of highways. For many years, wayside restaurants have been meeting points of varied civilisations, cultures and cuisines. These eating houses have been bringing together people & promoting interaction. TollGate is here representing that culture. The owners have also tried to bring in rustic flavours, and highway experiences. All this is done to promote friendly and neighbourly socialising.

The food options at TollGate are very straightforward and not complicated. The menu revisits the classical dishes served on the highways from across the globe and are designed to send the guests on a trip of nostalgia. All the elements of a highway, from tar roads, flyovers, fuel stations to hurricane lights and live food counters greet you as you enter the eatery. Nearly 80 per cent of the outlet remains uncovered. The other 20 per cent is an inside seating, making the dining experience casual, comfortable and yet an intimate one. Yes, they named it Ulavacharu, while many of their peers went for western names. This certainly pleases the traditionalists and pleasantly surprises the modernists. First Step I hail from an agricultural family and have been passionate about food right from the childhood. I enjoy every morsel I take in.
