While the Swachh Bharat Abhyan talks of keeping the city clean, three trendsetting young men- Naresh, Rakesh and Raja Sekhar are out to clean the city streets of the dismal practice of child begging. he joy of cooking with fresh tomatoes, tender coriander leaves or organic lady fingers is just unbeatable. Can there be anything more peaceful than saunter around in your home garden, after a stressful day? But in these days of rat race and rush, who has the time, space or knowledge to set up a garden, leave alone an organic one? However, there seems to be a solution right at hand. That is what Exotic Plants offers. She makes terrace/kitchen/indoor gardening look literally a walk in the park with no fuss and mess.

She adds, “Usiri chettu (amla), rose hip, peace lily, spider plant, orchids, spices like clove, cardamom, bay leaf and black pepper plants, fern, thyme, croton, betel leaf, succulent plant and basil are always in demand.”

Founded by Satya Prema, sprawled over 400 sq.yd. and located in the 2nd lane after Iskcon Temple, Sagar Nagar, Exotic Plants houses unique plants and flowers, organic seeds, cactus, herbs, succulents, fruit plants, ferns,

The landscaping services cost Rs.5,000 and above. The price range of exotic plants is from Rs.100 to Rs.25,000, miniatures from Rs.600 and pots/planters/vases from Rs.20 to Rs.4,000.

Satya hastens to dispel the general notion that one needs a big space to plan gardens and says that mini-gardens are quite viable and in vogue. Variegated plants perfectly fit the bill when it comes to small or indoor patches.

Response? “Oh great! We witness quite a lot of walk-ins on a daily basis. We are getting inquires from housing societies, schools, corporate offices, etc. We have done four gardens till now, one being in distant Thimmapuram,” she says, talking about the reach she has.

MALLA SISTERS

P

roving that sibling rivalry is a thing of the past, at least in the world of economy, we come across several instances of brothers and sisters running businesses together with great success. But young sisters not fighting over even trivia like a pair of trousers or a lipstick is rather unheard of. Yes, that is the bonhomie you find in the Malla household. While mother Aruna has three doting brothers who would not start their day without greeting her, daughters Anusha and Alekhya never as much as bicker or banter over any issue- major or minor. With a perfect thread of love and understanding binding them closely, they are the cynosure of their father. It may be hard to believe, but even now whether it is lunch or dinner time, the ever-busy leading political leader and business tycoon, Mr.Malla Vijaya Prasad, has to rush home from wherever he is, to supervise the girls’ meals and feed them with his own hands. Such is the hold the two ‘princesses’ have on their devoted father. Ask them if they would be his political heirs, pat comes the reply and they in unison say, “No, we are aware of the hardships.”

Wellfarian. I am the member of the Advisory Board of Wellfare group of companies, managing trustee of Wellfare Charitable Trust, and Managing Director of Wellfare Marina. Responsibilities An: I am in-charge of the head office, WISTM Education Institution, Marina Hotel and our upcoming chain of hotels Al: I manage Hotel Marina. My focus is more on the new project which will be coming up soon. The change An: I joined business when I was just 19. I started working with seniors with a lot of experience. Since I was dealing with a lot of wisdom and wit, I had to be extra cautious and think twice before I put forth my ideas. It has been a smooth learning process. Since I am heading a lot of wings, daily issues from every sector

I LEARNT TO BE A COMPASSIONATE AND CARING BOSS: ANUSHA

The girls may have different professional pursuits, but have one thing in commondetermination to come out of the giant shadow of their father, and create their own identity. The sure-footed sisters are full of ideas and well-set goals that defy their age. What is more interesting is they spell them out in a confident and eloquent homily; of course, not without those natural fun and frolic interjections.

EXCERPTS First step Anusha: When dad was busy in politics, I took the decision to step into the organisation to expedite its growth and remove hindrances that were coming in the way of its progress. It was a surprise birthday gift for my father. Alekhya: I am pursuing Bachelors in Hotel Management (3rd year) from Acharya Nagarjuna University. Life is all about some learning, isn’t it? Change in wardrobe An: Well, I wear whatever I like but yes the length of my attires has increased. Interestingly, a few of my staff started donning western outfits after my entry, which is a very good change. Al: It is more of formals now. But yes, we replenish our wardrobe every 2 months. Team and management An: When I joined the well-established concern, there was a team in place. However, I had to cut the deadwood, remove some non-performers and pick up a few value-adding professionals. I consider energy and positive approach as the prerequisites to enter Wellfare.

Al: I look for integrity, honesty, punctuality and dedication in my team. Successful project An: During the period between 2011 and 2014, WISTM had only 500 students. We could double the strength by admitting 500 students in 2015. With the help of our diligent Principal and staff we could now touch the 1500-mark. Al: My projects are at nascent stage. Lots to learn and achieve! But if the upcoming project gets executed successfully, I will start my own hotel. Disappointments An: None whatsoever. Al: Initially, I was skeptical about taking risks, but my father & sister encouraged me to go ahead and guided me. Now, I am ready for challenges. Lessons learnt An: You may heap your staff with perks and promotions, but at the end of the day, all they remember is how you treat them. So, I learnt to be a boss with a caring and compassionate heart. Al: I am more matured now. Life is all about taking risks. Every step in life teaches us a lesson. It may be good or bad- I take all of them in a positive way! One leadership lesson An: My father always tells us that we should love our nation the way we love our family. Following that, I am sure to be a good leader. Al: Generosity. I learnt that from my father. He empties his pockets for anyone who comes seeking his help. Gender hurdle An: Will you pose the same question to my male counterpart? Al: I am not a ‘She Boss’ yet. I am yet to get used to being addressed ‘M’am’. Our initiatives are theme based like Self-Habilitation, etc. We go for these activities twice a month. We visit slums, villages and tribal areas with an objective to spread awareness among the inmates over hygienic habits and education. We distribute basic necessities, etc. Al: Leaving the visible spots to others, we cover remote areas. We believe in the maxim “Hunger is not for the bread, hunger is for the love.” So, we try to spend as much time as possible with the needy. We don’t publicise our charity acts. Blogs you follow and recommend An: Joyce Meyer Al: Peace revolution, The Positivity Relationship Al: She is very supportive. We are more of BFFs. An: Our wavelengths match. We share everything. “Home is wherever we are together” reads the beautifully crafted signboard. Superintendent of Police (Visakha Rural) M r. R a h u l D e v S h a r m a a n d w i f e Mrs.Sakshi could not have chosen a more appropriate quote to adorn the entrance of their home away from their geographical home. The young couple seems to have created their cozy and loving nest not only in letter but also in spirit. They are well ensconced here,

adopting the local lingo and lifestyle. Their acclimatisation is so complete that succulent parathas, on which they both grew up, are replaced by austere idlis and dosas at the breakfast table. Entering the wedlock on 21st Jan 2014, the young police officer brought his bride to Andhra Pradesh. For chic dress designer Sakshi, the place was, till then, just another name in the list of 29 states.

If the move from the capital -New Delhi to Parvatipuram was a challenge in itself, shifting to four places in a span of four years must have been quite an overwhelming experience for a girl who just entered matrimony. Amidst all this, arrived their bundle of joy Aarav, adding a new pleasant dimension to their lives. The couple seems to have taken the changes and challenges with much equanimity and ease.

Decorated officer Rahul hails from Ghaziabad, UP. His father, Mr.B.D Sharma is an engineer serves in U.P State Government & mother Mrs.Usha Rani is a home maker. His brother Mr.Mayank runs a restaurant in Noida. A gold medallist in B.Tech from NIT Allahabad, Rahul earned his first job as a Site Engineer in NTPC Ltd. Bagging 197th rank in civil services exams, he joined IPS in 2010 as Assault Commander Greyhounds, ASP, Parvatipuram, OSD-Kadapa, SPCID, Hyderabad before he took up the present posting. He successfully curbed the Maoist menace in the district and earned the much-coveted President’s Police Medal for Gallantry in 2017. The unassuming officer acknowledges the role of his full team, stating that it is a proud moment for every police officer. Designer by choice Sakshi, an out and out Delhite, is the daughter of Mr. Avedhesh Kumar Sharma, an Asst. Engineer in Municipal Corporation of Delhi. While her mother Mrs.Rajbala is a house engineer, her brother Mr.Prakash runs a packaged drinking water plant- ALBION. A post-graduate degree holder in English literature, she studied B.Ed. However, she follows her passion and pursues her career in fashion designing. For now she is waiting in the wings to take it up as a full time profession. Of course, she has her hands full, with 2-year-old Aarav demanding & getting her undivided attention. The couple speaks of their years of togetherness in a candid tete-e-tete. Read on...

How did you meet? Sakshi: Our rendezvous was arranged by family friends. We met in 2012 for the first time. As Rahul was undergoing training at that time, he didn’t want to be married immediately. We waited till he settled down in his job and got married and moved to AP. First thing you noticed in him/her... S: His typical hair cut. Later, I came to know that it was mandatory to wear one’s hair that way while undergoing training.

SAKSHI: LIKE OLD WINE, OUR RELATIONSHIP GETS BETTER WITH TIME. RAHUL: AFTER SHE ENTERED, MY LIFE HAS BECOME MORE ORGANISED.

becomes a wee bit difficult but I try to reserve my weekends for them. S: I was aware of what I was getting into. Yet, it was a bit scary at times. By and by, I have learnt to live with it. He is as good as his word and spends weekends with us. Anyway, I don’t expect him to ignore his official commitments and am happy with the quality time I get. Does she design your clothes? Does he police your activities? R: Yes, she does all my shopping. That’s a big relief. S: No, he doesn’t. He keeps it to his office. Ideal romantic date? S: A candle light dinner with soft music. His/her trait you value most? S: His commitment and sincerity R: Her attitude- enjoy every moment. On decisions you don’t approve of… R: We take decisions after due deliberation. If there are any disputes, we present our point of view with supporting facts and logic.

Rahul: Her smile & dimple. Changes R: My life used to be rather ill organised before she entered my life. Everything is systematic now. S: Leaving Delhi was the biggest change, but now I love it here. Our son is the biggest blessing; he occupies most of our time. Secret behind the success of your marriage? S: We don’t fight over petty issues that often turn out to be irritants in any relationship. What steps do you take to keep romance alive? R: A few surprises & celebrating every small event does the trick. Risk-ridden profession- how do you deal with it? R: We are trained to deal with such situations. We have a set of SOPs and have needed security measures in place. It is a part and parcel of my life now. Giving exclusive attention to family redmagazine.in | 47

S: His ability to balance work and life. R: Her facility to adjust to every situation. Favourite dream S: That we are on a romantic date together. Though she came from the most happening city, she adjusted to the circumstances pretty fast and accepted the quiet lifestyle, that too without any complaints. She wanted to go for her doctoral studies, but gave it up so that we could be together. She understands what my job demands. Earlier, I used to be worried if she could fend for herself because I could not be with her all the time. Thank God, she is independent and can travel alone and handle any situation.

Perfectionist as he is, he worships his work. This is the most attractive part of his persona. He is equally devoted to the family and takes care of all my needs. We were posted in Parvatipuram, where there were no modern eateries. So without fail, he used to fetch a pizza for me, whenever he visited the city. Well, we cannot count the number of hours we spend together but he sees that we have the best of time in the given scenario.

hildren, often, perceive the doctor’s chamber as the place where painful and nasty things happen to them and the man in apron is the one who perpetrates them. It is the doctor’s prerogative to push his boundaries to break through this wall of resistance, braving the deafening screams and kicking limbs to apply that healing touch. But here is a specialist who befriends these tiny ‘rebels’ to that extent that they actually look forward to meeting him. Dr.K.Radhakrishna Managing Director & Chief Consultant Pediatrician, OMNI RK Super Speciality Hospital for Children & Women, forges a positive impact in the lives of innumerable children and parents. It is not just his ability to heal diseases but his innovative methods and standards he has set in the healthcare that make him immensely popular. He chose pediatrics purely out of love for children and passion for service. No wonder he walked away with the single coveted seat in the discipline at that time, competing with 3000 aspirants. He redefines

Pediatric Health care By V. Sarada

EXCERPTS Childhood We, four siblings had a fantastic childhood, in Pune, Tirupati and Vizag. I recall that the best period was spent in Pune where my father Dr.K.B.V.Somasundaram taught in the Dept. of Physiology, Army Medical College. My mother Mrs.Narimani, was generosity personified. My father used to keep us on a tight leash & taught us to take care of ourselves and our money. Right from the 2nd standard, we would take public transport to the school and were given 50 paisa per day for bus fare. I always topped the class. So, he never had any complaints except about my handwriting which is bad even now. Choice I had only two options- medicine or engineering. It is purely due to my love for children, I opted for pediatrics. Even now, I take every kid into my arms. I was the ninth pediatrician who started practice in the city. Bagging a gold medal in MD, I joined AMC as an Asst. Professor of Pediatrics in 1985. Unable to cope with the killing schedule, I left it and started RK Children’s Hospital and added Mother Child care. I collaborated with Omni in 2013. Then and now In 80s, medical infrastructure was woefully lacking and there was only one facility, KGH. Child mortality was high. Things started looking up with the advent of private nursing homes in 90s. But I must admit that there was an uninching trust between the doctors and the patients. There was no rat race or financial stress. Now infant mortality rate is low. Investigation services have improved. Of course, the cost of treatment is now prohibitive.

When it comes to doctor-patient ties, the trust factor is waning. People come with net-imparted half knowledge and question the abilities of the doctor. Omni RK The founders of Omni, based in Hyderabad, wanted to foray into the city and I wanted to work with them without taking the burden of administration. It was a mutually beneficial deal. Of course, I did invest to keep that feeling of ownership and suffixed it with my name RK. We are starting a new wing soon with a team of 15 pediatricians specialized in different fields. Group practice I introduced group practice, eradicating the concept of one man show. We pool our diverse skills and are assured of financial security. Of course, the leader of the group has to adopt the ‘Give and Forgive’ policy as he has to share finances and power to handle cases. He has to forgive people when they trespass.

favourite actor or teacher is. By placing an inhouse call, I make my staff talk to the child, impersonating its hero. d) My junior teammates too are treated to pizzas whenever they clear a doubt. Continued Medical Education (CME) A doctor is always a student and needs to constantly update his knowledge. I taught 2,000 students in my 15 years service at AMC. I used to go beyond the textbooks to share practical experiences. Even now I deliver at least 40 lectures in a year. Modern motherhood Mothers are obsessed with two issues – children’s food and education, and show no concern for the child’s creativity. They nurse a false assumption that medicines can do everything - right from enhancing the child’s appetite to its height. This has to change. Problems & solutions Unfortunately, we are 50 years behind in health care and research compared to the developed nations. We lag behind in hygiene, infrastructure and nursing. We can cut down 1/3rd of the deaths just by providing good hygienic conditions. The ever-increasing population is our bane. We can find solutions if only our politicians and bureaucrats are serious and committed. People too should put in their bit.

Small acts & big joy A good pediatrician has to be a stage performer and it is always show time for him. a)

When I was a child I recall Bata company came up with a gift scheme of giving children a timetable leaf. I went to the shop at least 20 times to claim it. The joy of having that gift stays etched in my mind even today. This inspired me to introduce this practice. Every child that comes to my chamber is offered a toy or goodie.

b) I also send books, fruits, chocolates and sweets as per the child’s choice. c) I find out who the child’s redmagazine.in | 51

I did not pick up right contacts. I would arrive at social functions so late that I would end up eating with the staff that stayed back to clean up the venue. Now I have started working on it. Alternative medicines & home remedies These streams were efficacious when they were practised by experts. But they were not passed down to succeeding generations. I don’t approve of home remedies like diet restrictions for the new mother and giving massages and fomentation to the child. For eg, people think that they can widen the child’s eyes and make them attractive by applying kohl. I say it only attracts an eye infection.

Unforgettable incident A baby from a poor family was in ICU for nearly 15 days and in the hospital for a month. When I asked the parents if they were relieved to go home at last, they replied that they sold their house to meet the expenses. That day my head bowed on two counts- firstly, with respect for the sacrificing parents & secondly, for the immense trust they reposed in me. Challenging case Five-year old Deepthi, victim of Encephalitis (inammation of the brain) came to us with no hopes of returning. But she survived and went home happily. The credit goes to my team. Special moment The best day was when my son landed a job with McKinsey & Company. He was the 3rd to be selected out of ten candidates from IIM-A, IIM-B and IIM-C. Regrets Yes three regrets- I wish I practised in a bigger city which would have given me a better exposure. I could not give enough time to my children during their formative years. Now, I try to make amends by travelling with them to spend some quality time together. Thirdly, I neglected social networking. Engrossed in my own world, redmagazine.in | 52

IVF IVF is a blessing for the childless. We will start our own wing very soon. Surrogacy is another new concept helpful for those who can’t take long breaks from work. Autism Though it is a genetic malady, it also can be attributed to the modern lifestyle where the child is exposed to a lot of screen time on Ipad/TV/Mobile. Parents get them addicted to it to either to feed

them a few extra morsels or to keep them entertained. Sadly, we don’t have enough institutions taking care of them. Advice to pediatric aspirants Work hard and try to update your knowledge through research. Be curious and go that extra mile to learn. I recall, a child was brought to me with multiple problems, one of which was a skin issue. I took the child to the dermatologist and tried to get to the bottom of the problem before treating it. Advice to parents They should inculcate reading habit in children and help them build a home library. Having a command over English and maths can take you up the social ladder. Maths sharpens brains & English opens doors of communication. Invest in a good school. Child should take interest in one art form. Presence of at least one of the parents at home is important. CSR activities We conduct a lot of health camps which help us in two ways. They help us serve the needy and also gain popularity.

Off the Cuff Success Mantra Hard work and perfecting any task I take up.

Essentials in life… Good friend and some relaxation.

Secret of your energy One hour of yoga a day keeps me fit and energised.

What makes you happy? Teaching.

Idol Mr.V.T.V.Prasad Rao, my physics teacher in school and Dr.Veerbhadra, teacher at medical college.

VIZAG

saga epeats By V. Sarada

Satisfaction Guaranteed’ are the two words that

have made all the difference, says retail tycoon

Sam Walton of Walmart. If Mr.S.R.Gopinath

Reddy, Managing Director, SR Shopping Mall, endorses the sentiment, the rapid growth of his enterprise, from one outlet in 2005 to a six-branch chain now, confirms that he walks the talk. While on this victory march, he has also dispelled two popular myths surrounding success – 1) One should be born with an entrepreneurial spoon in the mouth and 2) One has to storm the market with something dazzling and huge. That, he made it to the top without these two props, is a known fact. The businessman gracefully shares this glory with his wife Mrs.Saritha, Managing Partner - Software and Accounts. We talk to the couple to get a comprehensive view of the SR edifice and how Reddys have been expanding it block by block.

Why did you choose this trade? Gopinath: I come from a family of academicians & politicians belonging to Brahmamgari Matham. My father Mr.S.R.Rama Chandra Reddy is a retired head master and my mother Mrs.S.R.Ramanamma is a Hindi scholar. I studied engineering from Bengaluru. However, with my heart set in trade, I took up civil works even when I was in my third year. I tried my hand at a job only to realise that I am not cut out for the nine-to-five grind. After taking up a project in Kakinada Port, I have gone full throttle into garment business. Saritha: My father Mr. B.G.Krishna Reddy served as Deputy Director redmagazine.in | 56

Horticulture & mother Mrs.B.Radha is a home maker. Being a computer science graduate, I worked for an IT firm before I joined my husband. My attention is now divided between my son Dheeraj and the business. How did the mall happen? G: Our first outlet was established in Gajuwaka in 2005 and marched on. We also dabble in real estate. S: We opened outlets in Anakapalli, Gopalapatnam, Jagadamba and Srikakulam. To tap the high-end customers, we opened Kalyanee at Gopalapatnam.

What are the fresher’s advantages? G: I came with a clean slate unlike those scions, who inherit a structured trade mode. My open mind and outof-the-box thinking gave me a clear picture of the market. We knew we had to win over Vizagites who are predominantly salaried & austere, yet want to be dressed in the latest best. S: Yes, accepting that contradiction, we provide them with new arrivals with a strict vigil on the price tag. What is your USP? G: Agreed, all garment merchants offer more or less the same range

of merchandise with marginal price variations. But the real difference lies in services. S: We make people feel at home while giving them what they want. The changes you noticed... G: Earlier, members of a family used to go on their individual shopping sprees. Now they look for a one-stop destination which offers a wide assortment of merchandise, low prices, amiable and helpful service, convenient hours and free parking. S: We follow the contours of the customer demands and provide everything under one roof. What are the market changes? G: Basically, the mall culture is here to stay. Standalone outlets are giving way to these biggies and chains of stores. Following this new trend, we have to change the procuring and marketing systems too. What are the challenges you faced in the journey? G: Nothing to complain about except that in this skilled labourdependent business, we find it tough to get experienced hands. S: By God’s grace it has been a smooth sail. What is your modus operandi? G: Our roles are well defined. Saritha takes care of software and administration while I manage the overall coordination and I also work on expansion programmes and advertisements; my brother is entrusted with purchases and readymade segment and a cousin handles the fabric wing. S: We have procuring teams, each one dedicated to one genre of merchandise and we have tie-

ups with agents all over the country. Products are, then, brought to our Murali Nagar corporate building which has a 12000 sq.ft- warehouse. Once categorized and bar-coded, the pieces are sent to the branches in our own vehicles. Your marketing strategy? timing is as important as the procurement of the material. We move the right stock at the right time. This is our success mantra. How do you manage to propagate your mall? G: Our customers are our brand ambassadors. We gained popularity through word of mouth. S: Our name precedes us every time we opened a new branch with our customers passing a good word about us to their kith and kin, and friends living around that area. No wonder, we get good response right from the day one. How do you deal with cutthroat competition? G: Show me one business that is free of competition.

an eye on their choices. Check on quality G: We only deal with very reputed manufacturers. So, half of our job is done even before we pick up the products. Defects, if any, can be spotted very easily in the bar-coding process. Secret behind your success. G: We have pooled our individual strengths and built a coherent union. Saritha’s knowledge of computers helps us in accounts. My brother, who earlier headed a college, is adept at human resources and administration. Our cousin who has immense knowledge of merchandise, procures the best. S: Gopinath is behind my success and vice versa. We also owe it to our committed and dedicated staff, which wants to see the SR Shopping Mall in the forefront. I feel distribution and its

I quote Sam Walton here- “Having no competition is a bad thing. Competition makes you try to improve yourself all the time.” Being a fashion industry, our field is very dynamic. recently with a tagline -Ade bandham, sari kotha rupam (Ties remain the same but in a new mode). We replenish the stock every week, that too with fast moving pieces.

Demonetisation and GST- how did they impact you? G: We are still reeling under the demonetisation effect. But I am sure GST will be helpful to us, once we get over these transitional hiccups.

E-tailing vs brick and mortar S: Our store was the first in the city to touch millennial customer through digital platform. It proved to be more expensive than the traditional mode.

Any unforgettable incidents? Both: Setting up the Jagadamba branch is a memory I can never wipe out of my mind. I was apprehensive of being a pigmy amidst the giants around initially. However, competing with them revealed many realities. I learnt that the size of the shop would not matter if you had the right product on your counter at the right time.

G: We don’t lose sight of our identity, mission and core customers, who are generally comfortable with ‘touch-feel and buy’ mode. Tip to new comers G: Retailing is undergoing a sea change. Earlier, people could start business anywhere and even with small stores. As I mentioned earlier, leading businessmen are going for chains of stores. This also shows that they are ready to take huge volume of business. Newcomers should enter the field only after keeping these developments in mind.

WE FOLLOW THE CONTOURS OF THE CUSTOMER DEMANDS AND PROVIDE EVERYTHING UNDER ONE ROOF.

What are your future plans? Both: First, we want to open outlets in the neighbouring districts and later on all over the state.

After earning doctorate degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from AU, Dr.S.L.N.Prasad Reddy worked as a manufacturing chemist. He served as the Principal of a Pharmacy College in Hyderabad. He joined SR Shopping Mall as Managing Partner (Purchase & Administration) and says that it has been a smooth shift.

How was the transition? My communication skills stood me in good stead. I, along with our staff, build a synergy which helps us march towards the common goal.

Working with kin- advantages & disadvantages… I am here because of my brother. I thank my parents for structuring our thinking in such a way that we share an excellent rapport. Luckily, this bonhomie is extended to our respective families too. Only disadvantage is sometimes our personal and professional lives overlap.

Motive behind mission “It was during my final year of engineering that I witnessed some disturbing incidents which made me wonder why people turned so selfish, lacking compassion for the fellow beings. Initially, my plan to take up social service drew laughs from everyone. But I stuck to my guns. In quest of the right target, I repeatedly asked myself - “Who is in dire need?" and “Whom can

The beginning “To begin with, we started visiting children’s homes to play, talk and educate, and assure them of our support. We went to every single organisation registered in the city. To our dismay, we found that these homes were unable to retain the inmates who were lured by more lucrative outside activities. Then surveying streets and slums, we met child beggars, child labourers and

traffickers. In the Kancharpalem slum itself, we found 80% of children had dropped out of school to work or beg. It also dawned on us that a day’s speech or a motivation session was not enough to send them back to school and started giving night tuition. However, the outcome was not very satisfactory. Our next strategy was to befriend the children who were earning anything between Rs.200 to Rs.500 per day. We find that they would fritter it away on hotels, movies and drugs. “We understood the magnitude of the problem & intensified our drive. We distributed 13 lakh pamphlets. We felt the need to establish Generation Yuvaa Children Homes and Village as total rehabilitation of the children can be achieved only by keeping them under 24x7 vigil,” says the trio.

The journey Established in 2007, the NGO till now has handled 2000 cases and positively affected the lives of 250 children. Right now, it provides shelter to 186 children in four homes run in MVP Colony, Gajuwaka, Birla Junction (main counseling center) and Muralinagar. Nearly 6,000 donors from across the globe and 200 plus volunteers, help them out in this humongous task. The prime objective “We opened our first centre in Naresh’s house at Birla Junction in 2012 with just two boys. Much to our chagrin, one of them, a street dancer, was resisting counseling. We threw in some dance activities to win him over. Success of these cases inspired us to rescue more children,” they say with justified pride.

be gauged from the fact that we could rescue 80% of them,” they say.

• The child’s interest is identified and he/she is introduced to institutional discipline and emotional bonding. Every child is made to take care of a plant or an animal.

Help from outside Right now 100 children are adopted by donors. Anyone can sponsor a day’s meal or provide basic amenities. But they are not allowed to distribute food or gifts. There are a few donors who sponsor or celebrate happy occasions with the children.

• The child then is admitted to a private school. • Gen Yuvaa helps parents too who are allowed to visit their child once in 40 days. They are motivated to adapt a good lifestyle. Reformed parents are employed in shelters.

• On receiving information, a rescue team approaches the parents.

Shocking but true “We discovered that most of the children were drug addicts or had been inhaling whiteners sold to them by the elder beggars. The pungent smell of the whitener gives a kick, kills hunger and eventually, affects the central nervous system. The addict meets a pre-mature death. Migrant workers too deploy their children for begging. Telugu people are known for their generosity. They inadvertently encourage child begging.”

• The erring parents are given three warnings. The child is rescued and produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). After obtaining

At present, they have 100 boys and 86 girls. Eight children with OCD and two mentally challenged are rehabilitated and now lead a normal life. Sequence of actions

Success tales • Two children have completed their 12th standard, and are preparing for EAMCET exams. Two inmates are writing their 10th board exams. 120 children are going to private schools, and nearly 60 of them are rank holders. • They have no stage fear and communicate with ease. • A woman and her two children who were mortgaged to a builder by her husband were rescued. Now the family is reunited after the husband is counselled. • The NGO could reform many parents who motivate their peer to quit begging. Some of them are now the NGO’s coordinators.

Unforgettable incident “A 19 year-old-girl dropped her child here. A day after Hudhud, she came in an inebriated state, demanding the child be returned. When we warned her of the inclement weather and requested her not to take the child, she cut her throat. We had to return the child. A day later she re-admitted the child only to reclaim it after two months. Till date, we are unable to take the child’s custody. The background check revealed that she was a drug addict and used to easy money.” Future Plans “We plan to set up 3 more homes. Our aim is to spread Gen Yuvaa across the state by 2020 and the country by 2025. We want to build a self-sustainable village in which each family is provided with a hut. The child can stay with its parents who can earn their living through any vocation they are good at. We now turn our focus on women who aunt their infants to beg. We want to replicate the Vizag model all over the country.

Generation Yuvaa offers • Exclusive shelters: two for boys & two for girls. • It takes care of them till they are settled, besides supporting single mothers. • Birla Junction Center is run on a village model with a few huts, a nursery and a few animals. • A family-like ambience is created with the children addressing their care takers as Anna and Akka. There are 50 staffers to tend to the needs of the children and each shelter is headed by one elder. • The activities in the shelters are constantly monitored through CCTVs. • A centralised kitchen serves nutritious and healthy food to the inmates. food from outside is permitted except on special occasions. The schedule is breakfast-snacks-lunch-health drinksnacks-dinner. • Two autorickshaws transport the children to school. • Inspirational sessions like Ignite Your Mind are held for the children above eight years. Experts from various fields are invited to motivate them. • Three retired teachers (volunteers) teach the children. • An academic in-charge prepares the monthly report cards. Coordinators keep a regular check on the child’s progress at school. • 70 doctors (volunteers) take care of their health needs.

What do we do to check this social evil?

Bitter Facts

• Offering a 10 rupee note to a child is not an act of kindness. By doing so, we only encourage them on this path of destruction. Instead, get in touch with the NGO and give the details of the child and its whereabouts.

• In India nearly three lakh children are forced into begging.

• You can sponsor a child for Rs.3,200 per month or sponsor a day’s meal for Rs.6,000 for one branch. • Since the NGO was oated by students, participation of students is appreciated and encouraged.

• They are inicted with wounds and maimed to inspire pity. • Many don’t know that the sops they give, go for alcohol, drugs or trafficker, and not for food or education. • Many parents live comfortable lives by pushing their children into begging. • Parents reclaim children from shelters and push them back into begging.

his signature dishes.

A FEW MORSELS

CHICKEN ALA KIEV A modern twist on a popular classic, this simple yet impressive version of chicken kiev makes a delicious centre piece for a hearty dinner. Fresh herb butter, instead of regularly used garlic butter, is added for the rich, indulgent filling. It is rolled in crisp Japanese breadcrumbs (Panko). As the knife pierces through the chicken breast, a golden stream of herb-ecked butter ows out. Relish it with spinach & cheese sauce.

FISH POLLICHATU Freshly-caught pomfret is marinated with home-made spices, lemon juice and ginger garlic paste. It is panseared with onion, tomato and tamarind masala after which it is wrapped in a banana leaf and sweated for five minutes on each side. The avours along with the aroma of banana leaf penetrate the fish. The dish arrives in a steamy bundle dressed with tomato and onion slices. BAMBOO CHICKEN Made out of a tribal recipe of Araku, this tempting delicacy is prepared by marinating chicken overnight with home-made spices, curry leaf, green chillies and fresh coconut. The chicken is stuffed into the bamboo stalk, and cooked on charcoal fire. The moisture from the bamboo and the smoky avour adds that extra tang to the dish. Garnished with onion rings, coriander leaves and a dash of lime, it is just irresistible.

KADHAI PANEER CHEF’S WAY PEACH MOJITO, ORANGE PIROSKA & GREEN COOLOR Can anyone ever resist paneer? This popular North Indian dish is the most sought after across the world. Paneer, stuffed with cheese, ginger, green chillies and garlic, is marinated and cooked in a clay pot, and then tossed with coriander leaves, onion, capsicum and onion tomato masala. Scrumptious, aromatic and rich in taste, this dish is an absolute meal showstopper.

Yep, we seem to be in for a harsh summer. We are readying a few fresh, fizzy and refreshing drinks, packed with ingredients like kiwi crush, khus syrup, mint leaves, coconut water, orange slices, lemon slices and what not, to up the cool.

So, why bring the gender angle to this?" - starting on that redeďŹ ning thought, Sylekhya Kokkirala, MD, Manasarovar The Fern, speaks about life, love, motherhood and feminism. Born to Mr.M.Sambasiva Rao and Mrs.Rama, she had an eventful childhood. Claiming that she is the architect of her career and personal life too, she says, “Of course, it has to be one's own choice and good or bad, one has to stand by it. We are often known for blaming someone for the course our life takes. I don't believe in it." After a conversation with her, you are certain to return lighthearted. HAPPY AND

H SPITABLE By Swarnalata Pothapragada

Career choices After completing my 12th standard, I wanted to do my under graduation abroad. But my parents wanted me to stay with them stating that I would anyway go for my masters abroad and post that I would get married. I succumbed to this pressure and joined Delhi University, as my father was then posted in Delhi. But the twist came after my first year. My father was back in Hyderabad and I landed finishing the course staying alone. After my B.Com (Hons) before

Love Charan and I knew each other since our childhood, and our parents were family friends. But like any other kids, we always used to fight. We both studied undergrad together in Delhi. Later, we both applied to the same university for MBA as our interests were the same. So, when we were in our first year, my father brought up this topic of marriage and I was clear that I was not up for an arranged

marriage. I was not keen on the idea of marrying someone who I don't know. I told my father that I had many friends & they could pick one who I was comfortable with. So, it was a sort of arranged cum love marriage. Our engagement and marriage happened during our vacations while we were pursuing our MBA. It was not like being in a conventional marriage. Till our daughter was born, it was like two friends under one roof and our house was like a bachelor’s pad. We have become more responsible and there has been a change in our routine. But in terms of our rapport, we have been like buddies. You won't believe, we don't gift each other anything like rings, phones etc. All we do is travel and make memories by clicking loads of pictures. We know each other so well that we can speak of anything and everything without any inhibitions. I am sure that most of the family members don't understand the dynamics between us because no wife would speak to a husband like I do and vice versa.

LIVING IN MANY PLACES HAS TAUGHT ME TO

Nature Vs Nurture Growing up abroad is different from growing up in India. That difference can be clearly seen when you compare my brother with me. However, I would say it's a blend of environment and nurturing. So, if I have to pack my bags and move to a new place, I would not complain that there is no rice, dal or maid etc. Because I know how it is to live on my own and manage in a new place. I can survive even in out of comfort zone. I shifted seven schools and therefore, had to adjust to new syllabus and make new friends.

I left for my MBA, I did work for an organisation which was into renewable energy. Post that I went and obtained my MBA degree. I returned and it was again my choice to join my father-in-law's business which was branched out into renewable energy, construction and hospitality. Though my obvious choice was renewable energy, that wing was at a nascent stage. So, the next option was hospitality. Living in Antigua where hospitality industry is the major contributor to the national GDP, I was sure that hospitality industry was my choice.

SURVIVE EVEN IN OUT OF COMFORT ZONE

Growing up My dad was an IAS officer and had to travel a lot. So I was shipped off to my maternal grandparents who lived in West Indies. My grandfather Kaza V.R.Babu was a doctor. So, by the time I was 8, I was a much-travelled child. After my brother was born, I came back to India to stay with my parents. It was my choice to come back to them. I put forth a condition that I would visit my grandparents every summer. This deal was implemented till I passed the 12th standard. I must say that this cross-cultural exposure molded my perception towards life. My grandparents pampered me a lot. At the same time, they imbued values essential for any child.

Hospitality Mantra "The hospitality industry is very simple. It is a thousand simple things at once." - this statement has been my mantra. "I have a house with 3 bedrooms. Managing a hotel is like having a house with 100 bedrooms."this is exactly how I perceive my work. The difference is with your home, you know who is coming home. With the hotel, you don't know who is coming to stay. You want more people to come and stay and you want the same to come again & again. The industry is people-driven and social media driven too. Things were not that tough earlier as there was less competition. I remember when we were young, my family used to go to Deccan Pavilion in Kakatiya. This redmagazine.in | 28

Shoot by: Dinakar Pamu

- THIS STATEMENT HAS BEEN MY MANTRA.

IT IS A THOUSAND SIMPLE THINGS AT ONCE.

On a personal front, my daughter has helped me streamline my work. I plan my day meticulously and strive to be a hands-on mother. But the biggest change has been a change in my relationship with my mom. My rapport with my mother was more like a friend. But now I understand what it feels to be a mother. I want to teach my daughter what is wrong and right. I want to ensure that Charan is around when I educate our daughter. I tell him that he must break out of this shyness and barriers.

THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY IS VERY SIMPLE.

Motherhood It's been 6 months since our daughter Krythya arrived. After she was born I realised that our facility didn't have a high chair for children. That's when I realised, many who had visited our restaurants would have see it as a lacuna. Secondly, I realised that Charan also had to put in his bit. I wonder why corporates give maternity leave only to the women? The father must also be given leave as his support is very much needed during the initial months.

TIDBITS Idea of Relaxation Travel

Love what you do, and do not compete with anyone.

Set your own standards and refrain from comparisons.

Believe in yourself and .nothing is impossible.

Feminism Educate women Success Mantra Everything is for good. Just identify it. Holiday Destination World

was our habit for 4 years. But now you have places that have opened and closed in a year. So, our job is to make the place cozy for people to come back and interesting for new people to come explore the place. Women @ work The major problem is retention. I feel girls are ambitious, So they shift jobs. On the other hand, women who have experience and ability, they have their priorities of marriage and kids, resulting

in short-term association. So, I prefer women who have reached a stage where they stick to the firm for a longer period. Our appraisals all are based on merit. The women can walk in without any inhibition and report to me if they experience any sort of gender bias. However, I do see a lot of gap in terms of women at the strategic level compared to that in the ground staff.

THE

POLITICALLY CORRECT

HOTELIER By Swarnalata Pothapragada

H

olding an engineering degreeBE (Mechanical) from Bengaluru University, Rashed Khan was actively participating in politics before he decided to venture into the hospitality industry. His adventurous nature & his confidence that he would excel in whatever he takes up, motivated him to tread this entirely unfamiliar path. He, now, efficiently runs his most happening restaurant Miami Koffee N Kitchen. His better half, a model and DJ, Inayah Sharon, supports him professionally and personally. They may be complementing partners, but they are a perfect example of saying ‘Opposites attract.’ Here is a sneak peek into his work and the crackling chemistry between the lovely couple.

redmagazine.in | 30

Why hospitality? I had always nursed a dream of becoming an I.P.S officer. After my graduation, I appeared for the U.P.S.C exams too, but due to some unavoidable circumstances, I could not make it. However, my determination to serve the society and country has never diminished. I turned my attention to politics. I also realised that we needed responsible and efficient leaders, and that it was time the common man joined the bandwagon! The hospitality industry was something I had never thought of since my mind was occupied with politics. My wife, however, wanted

to start a restaurant that was spacious, out in the open air and serves lip-smacking & delectable delicacies. And that was how I happened to be here. What are the principles on which you run your restaurant? My main priority has always been the market credibility. Customers’ feedback is of vital importance to us. Quality not the quantity matters and in the long run, only quality succeeds.

Setting up the place. Miami Koffee N Kitchen is the biggest coffee shop in the city. We did face several challenges. What is new in that? Doesn’t every day come with its own set of challenges? The first one was to set up a facility in a building which is not properly equipped and to create an open air place. We had to start from the scratch. Every minute detail had to be looked into. Once the coffee shop was ready, we faced the next big hurdle- hookah got banned. It was a major setback to us. Any initial inhibitions? Taking up challenges and risks, is a way of life for me. I believe even deficiencies make you strong, only if you work on them. Hence, there have been no inhibitions what so ever... Que Sera Sera! The initial hurdles while setting up the place For us, the major hiccup was designing the place. It was a challenge to start from the scratch and transform the terrace area into a coffee shop. We had to build a roof and had separate rooms for DJ party events, kitchen, and office. A 9,000 sq.ft. area needs a lot of designing, so that was another challenge. While doing the interiors we wanted to keep it simple, yet very interesting. Finding the right pieces for the interiors was a task. That was when I learnt that interior designing could be tough. Tell us about the place. It is a spacious open spot, where you can relax, sit and work without any disturbance. We wanted this place to be known as the best spot for creative people & professionals

who can work comfortably, spend some time and hang out with friends. Hence, right from the interiors to the seating and cuisine- everything was thoroughly planned and we saw to it that it caters to all age groups and tastes. The place is a nice spot for small parties.

we know that the important thing to survive is ‘uniqueness.’ Apart from that, I believe in social media promotions. I make sure all the platforms are tapped. Having contests and running offers are also effective tools for promotion.

What are strong and weak points of the place? I only look at positive aspects, so the strong points are that it is sky facing and it is very comfortable and ideal for the Indian weather. It is very spacious. So people don’t feel suffocated. Customers can celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and other important functions with the provision of DJ and live band. The taste and quality of food are given utmost importance.

Competition with others drains you mentally. I set my own pace and standards and constantly strive to outperform myself. I rely on hard work, inner strength and zeal to achieve my goals.

How do you distribute work? A man has more time on his hands where as a woman has quite a few restrictions and priorities. So, I take care of all the activities, transactions and maintenance of the property. Since Sharon has an experience of 17 years in the events and entertainment industry, she organises interactive events at Miami.

Your professional mantra Each day is a new beginning. I am in a race with myself. I learn from my mistakes and faults. I look for various ways to sharpen my ideas and thoughts. Perfection helps you face difficulties.

How do you deal with competition? Every day a new place pops up in Hyderabad. However,

Your success mantra The only mantra I follow is – ‘Believe in yourself.’ Once you believe that you are powerful and put your mind to it, you can do

I BELIEVE THAT EVEN DEFICIENCIES MAKE YOU STRONG, IF YOU WORK ON THEM.

anything. Nothing is impossible! I don’t plan much for future but believe in everyday goals! On balancing work and life... Thankfully, I have a supportive wife, who is a workaholic. So I never felt the need to make an effort here. We both understand each other's professional priorities. At the same time, we both know our personal commitments and make time for the same. With our lovely daughter Sanayah, personal space is all about pampering her and spending time with her.

ith father Mr.Mirza Firasat Baig being a highly successful entrepreneur, it is only natural that Aamir Baig has

business running in his blood. Fortunately, he realised this streak pretty soon and pursued it seriously. Despite having a huge family business, which branched out into multiple areas like car rentals, real estate, plastics and more, Aamir wanted to establish his own identity. This laid the foundation to one of Hyderabad's famous restaurants- Chicha's and a prestigious property - Vooty. Here is a glimpse into his life’s journey.

The beginning I am an out and out Hyderabadi. I did my schooling in Geetanjali school, +2 in St.Mary's and went to Bhavans for my under graduation. My tenure at Bhavans was an enriching experience as I interacted with students from different backgrounds and seniors who came for campus hiring. I wasn't much interested in academics and therefore, I started assisting my dad in his business right from my school days. I used to visit our facilities whenever possible to learn the trade nuances. By the time I was in my first year of graduation, I decided to get into business and start my own

venture. Before even officially getting into business, I along with a bunch of friends started a group Naughty Aliens to throw small parties. The first step After my graduation, I did venture into dairy and rice trading in partnership with my friends. We had to dissolve them as we failed miserably. I was taking care of our car rental service, Cozy cabs, even as I was trying my hand in other businesses. It is a corporate car rental service. When I joined, just because I am the MD's son, people used to call me sir. But I started working at the grass root

level and with mechanics and drivers under the vigil of supervisors. I also drove the cabs. I still remember, my first tip was Rs.50 when I was assigned an airport drop. Gradually, I rose in the ranks and was moved to the marketing department. My task was to get corporate deals. I used to interact with corporate giants and have cracked deals with clients like Google, Microsoft. With 200+ vehicles, we cater to almost every corporate in the city.

His contribution While trying my hands in different I was gaining experience and handling businesses, I was actively involved in my family business pretty well. Yet, land trading. Like many other markets, I nursed a desire to start something of it too collapsed during the 2006-2007 my own and to start it from the scratch. recession. I retained a few pieces of People might have wondered why land for my future endeavours and Vooty is coming up in one of them. I wanted to do it. My father is a selfmade man. I wanted to walk in his Shaping Vooty footsteps. Though my father was a bit The land we selected is near Vikarabad apprehensive about my plans, he never which is actually a hill station. That's pulled me back. He always guided and why the name Vooty. My idea was to encouraged me. Even now, I take his consent before starting anything new. Whenever, he extended financial support, I would take it only in the form of loan ASSOCIATING WITH KAPIL DEV HAS BEEN and repay it at the THE MOST SATISFYING EXPERIENCE stipulated time. Birth of Chicha’s I am a foodie and love exploring various cuisines. One day, I was sitting with my friends Qutub Alam Khan and Fauzan Khan who are also foodies, so naturally we started discussing food. We realised that there was so much more to Nizami food than just biryani, which is not available in the city. Even if it was available, it was not cooked with authentic avours and in a hygienic environment. That was when we decided to set up a restaurant that would serve authentic Nizami food in a hygienic environment and Chicha's came into existence. We roped in some of the best Nizami chefs from our contacts. By the grace of the Almighty and with the efforts of our team, the restaurant is earning rave reviews. We have had the privilege of serving the who's who of the city and actors like Rana Dagubbati, Allu Arjun and others. I feel humbled when they heap praises on our food and place.

come up with a property of international standards, promising luxury and leisure like never before. We put together a facility with a 18-hole golf course, villas which can be either bought or rented and a 2 lakh sq.ft. club house. We tied up with Dream Valley for this venture. The work is going on in full swing and it should be operational in four to five months.

Association with Kapil Dev Very few would know that after cricket the one sport that Mr. Kapil Dev loves and plays is golf. I met him at the Hyderabad Golf course. He is very humble and warm. When I told him about Vooty, he came to see it and simply loved it. When I requested him to be the face of the property, he readily agreed. Once the property is completely ready, we will have a proper photoshoot with him. It is an honor to have him as our brand ambassador. With his charisma and simplicity sans no starry airs, he can win innumerable hearts. Ups and downs I have had my share of ups and downs. Projects that I hoped would take off failed but I never gave up. Being an entrepreneur calls for perseverance and an ability to learn from failures. One must not expect quick results. Be ready to open when the opportunity knocks at your door. If things don't happen, understand that there is something wrong with your approach and change it. Dealing with competition Indian markets are volatile. One must accept changes that are inevitable. Be innovative to face cut throat competition. I believe trades run on goodwill. Money can be earned but goodwill has to be built.

Personal sneak peek Marrying Farah has been the best decision of my life. She binds our family. She understands my work and never complains. I have two lovely daughters Daniah (12years) Raiha (7years). I work hard throughout the week but shut myself from it on the weekends, which are totally reserved for my family. We go to our farmhouse where my parents live and spend it there. During the weekdays, I insist on dropping my children at school which is a good one hour drive. That is when all four of us get time to have a nice chat. That keeps me energised throughout the day at work.

Future plans The other day I told my wife that after 6-7 years, I wish to retire, relax, travel and enjoy. Till then I requested her to bear with me. I am sure I can do that as I have a committed team. I am looking for investments out of India to come up with holiday homes for myself and for business purpose. Passing of the legacy Daniah is showing inclination towards business. She tags along with me to the ofďŹ ce whenever she has an off from her school. She is a keen observer and gives her inputs when we are at home. I would be happy if she takes charge of the business.
