PUBLISHER’S NOTE

The camaraderie exhibited by the CMs of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh at the airport, where they went to receive the President, assumes a great significance now because of the existing hard feelings over many issues like fees reimbursement, Eamcet counselling, sharing of power and water. It is time KCR and Chandrababu came to the table and sorted out the contentious issues. A genuine bonhomie is the need of the hour between the recently separated brothers. Tollywood has been importing damsels from North as if there is a dearth of beauty and talent at home. Breaking this practice, Anjali, daughter of the soil, entered the scene and proved beyond doubt that given a chance, our girls too can shine as bright as the North star. Hence Anjali rightfully claims our cover space. Kothapalli Geetha, though a first timer in Parliament, has been making her presence felt with her substantial arguments. While Geetha talks of the uplift of the deprived tribals, Samia Alam Khan raises funds for the underprivileged children through swanky exhibitions of Araaish. Eve pages present them. red rightly chose to welcome the new Chairman of Visakha Port Trust, Mr. M.T.Krishna Babu, who came here, after successfully holding almost all the top bureaucratic posts in Hyderabad. I am sure VPT will soon ride a high tide of success under his stewardship. Dr. Anil Krishna has gifted the region with two high-end health facilities. While his Simhapuri, a multi-speciality hospital takes good care of Nellore and its surrounding areas, Sahrudaya at Hyderabad regulates the heart beats of thousands who throng it. Read their Life stories. ‘A healthy mind lies in a healthy body’ is an old maxim attracting even the new generations. The mushrooming gyms stand witness to this fad. Pradeep Roy realises his own Dreams as he hands out the Dumbells to the swarming health buffs. They may not be seeking greener postures abroad, but Dr.G.Ravindra Varma and his wife Dr. Pallavi are well-equipped with global knowledge in their respective streams and use it for the benefit of the locals. The young achievers figure in our GenX. Transcending the country’s boundaries, we stepped out to explore exotic and ethereal Bali Islands. Though they lie beyond our shores, the spirit of India is reflected in their temples. I am sure the breathtaking glimpses we offer are enough to compel our readers to rush to the nearest travel desk. I sign off wishing our readers, patrons, advertisers and well-wishers a very Happy Independence Day, Krishna Janmashtami and Vinayaka Chaviti.

DESTINATION FOR FINE ART JEWELLERY

N

ot one to shy away from latest trends, Vizag too has earned many a fashion store. The fresh entry to the fashion world, Anahita is a boutique of its kind that stores the fine art jewellery. The new store run by Ms.Satya, offers a collection that is a blend of traditional and trendy jewellery.

Located closer to Siripuram Junction in Balajinagar the store is spread across 760 sft. The USP of the store (that records a daily footfall of 20 to 30) is it doesn’t keep more than one of a similar piece. Once it is sold you cannot get another such piece even you are ready to shell out extra bucks. Named after Persian Goddess Anahita, the store specializes in designer jewellery right from temple to casual styles. Ms.Satya who has been into the business for the last 10 years, says that she ‘imports’ traditional jewellery from Chennai and Mumbai and trendy ones from Mumbai and Delhi. Since all its collections are rodium-plated and nickel free they don’t irritate your skin. While the price range of temple jewellery is between Rs.900 and Rs. 3,000, that of bridal jewellery is between Rs 3,000 and Rs 40,000. Wedding jewellery is available for both bride and groom. It has an exquisite collection of pendants that fall into temple jewellery category. It has an awesome collection of ‘vaddanams’ that are priced between Rs.1,400 and Rs.4,000 and ‘danda vankis’ that cost you somewhere between Rs.300 and Rs.1,000. It also has a huge collection of clutches and trendy handbags. The starting price of a clutch is Rs.150 and it goes upto Rs.1,000. The price range of the imported handbags is between Rs 1,500 and Rs.4,000. Apart from above, the boutique is known for its collection of tiaras, papidbindis and jadabillalu. Its other collections include earrings, ear hangings, chandbalis, glass bangles, hairclips, cloth bands, baby clips and a unique collection of bindis. Ear and nose piercing by professionals is done for Rs.500 per head. To sum it up Anahita is the destination for the fine art jewellery. Timings: 10 am to 8.30 pm | Ph. no.: 0891-2551232

STRAIGHTENING SPINES Shoot by Dhana Vijay

By Ranita Ray

T

he term ‘spine surgery’ sends shivers down the spines not only of patients, but of doctors as well. The risk, taboo, fear and expense associated with it, deter professionals from taking up this mode of treatment. Moreover, mastering it is not easy. In this scenario, Vizag is fortunate to have one such specialist, spine and ortho surgeon, Dr. Bada Leela Prasad (M.S.-Ortho, F.A.S.M., and F.S.S). He is the only one in North Andhra correcting spinal deformity. With his expertise in the field and pledge towards social work, he has been changing many lives. He is also serving as the secretary of the North Andhra Orthopaedic Association and member of Association of Spine Surgeons of India (ASSI), AO Spine. The meeting session with him, revealed many unknown facts which are real eye openers. Read on!

A bit about your background My father, Mr.Chinni Krishna, worked with the Hindustan Shipyard Company and my mother Mrs.Rajyakshmi, is a homemaker. “After obtaining my basic medical education from the Andhra Medical College, I completed post graduation in orthopaedics from the Guntur Medical College (2001-2004). By then, I had developed keen interest in spine surgery and realized no one is doing it in north Andhra. It took me to Mumbai, where I underwent two years of rigorous fellowship training in spinal surgery at the prestigious Hinduja Hospital and the Lilavati Hospital. Thereafter, I left for South Korea, where I pursued fellowship in arthroscopy and sports medicine arthroscopy in Ansan University for a few months. I felt it was time for me to put my knowledge into practice. In 2007, I returned to India and started HYMA Spine and Ortho clinic. Today, I run two branches, one opposite KGH and the other in Kancharapalem. Speciality Despite my experience I chose not to get attached with any particular institution and I mainly freelance. I feel by confining to a corporate hospital, would make me unavailable to economically underprivileged ones. My patients are not restricted to Visakhapatnam, they come from neighboring districts and state too. Spine surgery is my forte, especially scoliosis correction or bent spine surgery. I perform surgeries mostly at Surya and Indus hospitals. Scoliosis correction is a challenging field. Most of the patients are adolescents. People with such conditions often lead miserable lives owing to the significant social stigma attached to it. Often they left with no choice, but finding themselves confined to closed doors. I was surprised to see that even most orthopaedic surgeons consider it as a taboo. Moreover, the procedure itself is technically demanding and takes nothing less than 5-7 hours. It has a very less margin for errors. Minor mistakes could lead to potentially serious complications. It is quite expensive too. All these factors

created apathy around its treatment. Hence, a very few take up this field, even at national level which further egged me on. However, the satisfaction is immense, as post correction patients lead normal lives; go to school, get married and can conceive too. I am one among a very few surgeons doing minimally invasive spine surgery as well. This has resulted in lesser complications and faster recovery. My patients can resume work in as less as three weeks post-surgery. Difficulties There are challenges related to the myths and fears around this condition and its treatment through surgery. Many people including doctors believe that it's better to wait till adulthood before undergoing surgery hoping the deformity to correct itself. However, the fact is exact opposite. The bend in the spine is a progressive condition and the deformity increases with the growth of spine and hence early correction is advised. People fear complications due to surgery leading to paralysis, etc, whereas the statistics for such cases is as low as less than 1 for every 1000 cases. Such myths need to be busted! Demand All I can do to cut down cost is to reduce my fees and persuade hospitals and implant providing vendors to do the same. But still the rates are prohibitive, especially for the downtrodden and less advantaged

sections of the society. I wish there was government support or schemes for poor people as there is no such provision at the moment. For Vizag Sake The factors like lack of awareness among Vizagites upset me the most. Doctors like me who are related to this field, can however bring some change. I do take up such measures and organize Continuous Medical Education-CMEs for training and updating doctors and free medical camps on a regular basis. This way, I think I am doing my bit of duty towards Vizag. Future plans I aspire to excel in my field and continue to provide world class healthcare service at an affordable cost to my patients. To do this I envision opening up multi-specialty orthopaedic centre along with a group of likeminded medical professionals. I also wish to build a dream team of accomplished and proficient healthcare professionals and make healthcare accessible to every segment of the society. Any advice? People with back related diseases lead miserable lives, blame the unawareness about the correct knowledge about it. They need to understand a few things. In most of the cases, they resort to alternative medicines which have no scientific basis and don’t work. It might sound shocking, but it is a fact that more often 95% of the cases get cured only with adequate rest and right medicines. For the rest 5%, surgery is advised. I would request people to maintain healthy lifestyle. They should try to promote the bones and joints health. Believe me it goes a long way in stopping the advent of many related diseases.

e has been into the fashion industry for more than a decade and the fashion lovers vouch for it that he is one of the best designers that Hyderabad has seen in the recent times. His designs with impeccable cuts are classy and royal. His clientele includes celebrities like Bollywood actress Kulraj. Anarkalis are his specialization. He is the only designer in the city who has both his studio as well as a franchise. With sheer dedication and hard work, he had come a long way, starting from nothing. Breaking mould of designers Vijay Rana is simple and forthright.

Shoot by Dhana Vijay red | august 2014 | 58

Fashion Quest Coming from a family that has been into the fashion industry, the sense of fashion is in his DNA and this Hyderabadi needed no formal training. “My grandfather was into the textile business (though not a fashion designer) and his store was opened by the late Indira Gandhi. Many of my relatives are into this business. That explains my love for fabric and fashion. Inspired by the Lakme Fashion Week 2003-2004, I started creating my designs. People with talent don’t need degrees from schools. In fact my designs are original because I have not been to any fashion school.” He neither followed any industry trends, nor believed in seasonal collections. He always kept giving colour to his imagination and created his own world of fashion. “I don’t bother to see what the neighbor is doing. I am not here to create for people, I create for myself and my satisfaction. For example, I have been making anarkalis for the last 10 years, but this trend has picked up only during the last two years. My anarkalis have been hit then and now too. Clients come to me for my customized cuts and unique colour combinations. Also, I love whites. So first I try my designs in white and then go for colours.” Unique Trait His label is known for the usage of the authentic Indian fabric. “I love cottons. Give me any traditional Indian cotton like Mangalagiri, Pochampalli, I make an outfit out of it. I think it’s only my store that has anarkalis made of all kinds of traditional cloth the price of which ranges from Rs.50,000 to Rs.2 lakh. I don’t use imported fabric as I feel the classy and elegant look that our fabric carries is incomparable.” Humanitarian Gesture His desire to support Indian weavers and his conviction to give back to the society make him an unconventional designer. “As I said, I love our fabrics. Many of our weavers due to lack of demand for their fabric are ending their lives. It hurts me. I use our fabrics so that I can support our people. I also appeal to all designers to give priority to our fabric.” “I love animals and dream of building a shelter for them. Hence I support NGOs like Blue Cross. Therefore, I always give a part of my earning to charity. However, taking this a step further, I plan to insist that my customers should donate x% to the charity mentioned on the price tag. For example, if one picks a Rs.3,000 outfit, the tag would have an additional message that they have to donate 2% or 3% of the cost or whatever to the charity. So, if they want to buy my pieces they have to donate. Whenever people wear my outfits they have a sense of pride of being a part of a noble cause. I am still working on the pricing and the other details.” Surprise The man whose creations ooze style and charm is an extremely simple man. He is shy, speaks very less and appears to be engrossed in his creative world.

(Smiles) “I am always like this. I feel it’s my designs that matter and not my looks. People buy my pieces for the design and not for my looks or dress sense. I love being simple and my clients too love that about me. I dress as per my comfort, not to impress people.” Future Plans “My current Hyderabad franchise owner, Bella Menezes plans to open my franchise in Dubai, New Jersey, Mumbai and Vizag as well. We are now working out the details.” Goals “I want my collection to feature in Lakme and Paris Fashion Week. However, the ultimate goal is- Fashion TV.” Advice to Aspirants “The fashion industry sees birth of new designers every day. They come and go. I advise the youngsters to enter this field only if they are passionate about it. Despite being talented many falter because they are not trained in any school. My advice to them is to build selfconfidence. Ultimately talent is what matters.” Signing off Note “All I can say is thanks to all my clients who love my outfits. It’s because of their love that a guy like me could make it to the top. Keep loving me and I promise to live up to your expectations.”

BEAUTIFUL WAIT Move over Hyderabad and Mumbai, Vizag is taking the centre stage in organizing the pageants that send a bevy of beauties out to conquer the world. Yes, there is one more event - ‘Miss Vizag 2014’ coming up and the city’s nymphs can once again aspire to set the ramp on fire. The swelling number of contestants is directly proportionate to the popularity of the event. Vizag girls who were ramp-shy till a few years ago are coming out in big numbers to flaunt their beauty and talent and test their luck in the world of glamour and glitz. The managers of this year’s event seem to be at their wit’s end groping through the growing-by-hour heap of applications and have been working overtime to shortlist them. Miss Vizag tag seems to be carrying the winners a long way in their career. With each event proving to be better than the previous one, the city is waiting with baited breath for the upcoming one.

YUVARAJ ON MISSION Experience and acquaintance help a lot to the bureaucrats in discharging their duties. Since he is already in the know of the brass tacks of the city, administering the district seems a child’s play for the new Collector Yuvaraj. It may be recalled that Yuvaraj showed his mettle by heading the Visakha Urban Development Authority before his new assignment. Showing his ‘Eveready’ enthusiasm, he is on a mission to develop the district. The list of his priorities includes bringing investments to the district and facilitating land for the many projects that are expected here. At the same time he wants to protect the government land from being encroached. Health in tribal area, agriculture, arresting accidents in the industries that are happening frequently in the recent past, improving KGH and other hospitals, protecting interests of fishermen are his other priorities. Taking feedback from the people is also one of his focal points. His stern warning that no leniency or laxity is tolerated and action taken against the ‘erring’ staff as far as land protection is concerned speaks volumes of his guts to clean the Augean stables. People hope the ‘Raj’ at the helm would deliver the goods in the ‘kingdom’ of Vizag.

TIME TO ACT Since he is the sole BJP representative in Parliament from the Seemandhra region, the locals quite obviously expected that Kambhampati Haribabu would be the part of the Modi’s team. But it did not happen. Emerging with flying colours, trouncing a formidable rival YSRCP president Vijayamma, he proved his mettle. So it was only natural the region pinned all its hopes on him. However, his steps that were taken with initial enthusiasm remained a flash in the pan. He himself admitted that things are not moving with same speed as he expected them to be. His utterances about the special railway zone for Visakhapatnam fell on deaf ears. TDP cadres attribute Haribabu’s ennui to his disappointment of not finding a place in the Cabinet. However, people feel that a leader of his ability, calibre and integrity neither needs nor waits for posts to be an effective bridge between the government and his people.

IT HOUSE IN DISORDER IT Minister Palle Raghunatha Reddy assured the investors and industrialists that Vizag will be developed as an Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR). The most attractive of all the gifts he had showered on the industry, is setting up of the single window mechanism for clearing IT investments. An incubation centre at Rushikonda will be provided with plug and play facilities for IT companies, he added. The minister was sure that these measures would certainly attract more entrepreneurs and multi-national companies. However, the local industrialists pooh-pooh all this as wishful thinking. In the absence of a favourable exit policy, adequate power and water, road and lighting facilities and more importantly security for the commuting staff, sustaining the existing companies itself is becoming difficult. The state will be pulling off a great feat if it can retain the companies that have already set their shop here, by meeting their demands. The industrialists suggest this should be done on priority basis instead of planning to bring new companies.

HOW HIGH WILL HE FLY? Mega Power Star Ram Charan is all set to expand his horizons by floating a company Turbo Megha Airways Private Limited in partnership with a friend, which will be operating chartered flights from Hyderabad. Recently the Aviation Ministry has obliged him with an NOC. The company, once it acquires a 68-seater, Q-400 Bombardier aircraft, is expected to announce schedules between seven cities - Chennai, Bangalore, Tuticorin, Madurai, Belgaum and Hubli. Cherry will unveil the logo and release the vision document of the company very soon. People say the seeds for Cherry’s new ambition were sown last year itself when his father Chiranjeevi was serving as the minister of tourism. It is to be seen to what heights will this new wing take him.

MONI’S MESMERISING CREATIONS Recently Chitrangada Singh walked for brand Meeravali by Moni Agarwal on the first day of India International Jewellery Week (IIJW) held in Mumbai. People said the jewellery looked as stunning as the star was. Moni Agarwal’s jewellery has been adorned by celebrities like Rana Daggubati, Shriya Saran, Tapsee, Amala Paul, Diana Hayden all of who have walked the ramp for Moni. No wonder her jewellery found patronage among society’s best. Like her creations, Moni is lighthearted, fun-loving and modest. She has created a perceptible niche for her brand. She has retailed at leading stores and venues across the country. Anything and everything serves as my muse, says the lady. Moni is now eager to take her creations to international shores.

POSTED PROBLEM The young Minister for Panchayat Raj & IT of Telangana, K.T.Rama Rao seems to be leaving no stone unturned to lure entrepreneurs to his state. These days he is omnipresent attending every possible public event whether it is an entrepreneurs’ meet or convocation or seminar or social event or Page-3 party or a fashion show. If KTR can rope in at least a couple of IT giants with the offers he is generously promising, there is no stopping him, who may even overshadow his all powerful father. Reiterating that he is with the people through thick and thin, KTR cancelled his birthday celebrations following the Medak bus accident. But the run up to the event showed on what scale it was intended to be held. Thousands of posters were stuck, defacing the walls of buildings across the city. Even the attempts to tear them off are no good as they leave the walls with ugly gum marks and peeled plasters. People feel it is time KTR, with his classy and sophisticated profile, reined in his followers and instructed them to refrain from such crass publicity tools.

ANNOYING ANOINTMENT A number of people are happy and have supported KCR choosing Sania Mirza as the brand ambassador of Telangana. But there are also some voices of dissent, though not so much over her being anointed as the brand ambassador, but her being presented a whopping Rs.1 cr. People are looking at KCR’s gesture as rather an extravagance the state can illafford at this stage. Sania, who had enjoyed the sponsorship of the united Andhra Pradesh and that of many entrepreneurs and industries, would not expect KCR to shell out the tax payers’ money, especially when the recently-born Telangana is taking the unsteady baby steps. Moreover, people feel KCR or any of his cabinet colleagues could have explained why Sania Mirza was chosen, when there are equally deserving sports stars like Saina Nehwal, Aswini Ponnappa and Parupalli Kashyap. Looks like these debates will not end unless a clarity is given on this issue.

man of a few words, he believes that one should be eloquent through his/her work. While his peers chose foreign lands to make their name and fame, he wholeheartedly chose a small city like Visakhapatnam as his Karma Bhoomi. In a place, which had limited awareness about his speciality and knew nothing about him, Dr.G.Ravindra Varma showed that it is possible to make his mark. To achieve that Ravindra has only one guiding principle - equal treatment to all irrespective of their paying capacity.

Flashback Hailing from a small town, Amalapuram, Ravindra had dreams to make it big. His father, Dr.G.Vivekananda Varma, was a general surgeon and his mother was a homemaker. He went to the Sawan Public School in Delhi for higher studies. Considering Ravindra’s meritorious academic record, his father wanted him to go for IAS. However, the son was highly influenced by his father as a doctor and his calling made him go for MBBS in the esteemed Osmania Medical College. It was followed by MS in General Surgery from the Gandhi Medical College. He got through the super speciality entrance exams of Maharashtra with flying colours, chose urology stream and completed his residency in Mumbai Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences. He obtained his M.Ch from the Mumbai University and obtained the certificate from the Diplomate National Board, New Delhi.

a heavy investment, which swells the service cost. Obviously it doesn’t reach the needy.” But he still hopes to translate his dream into a reality may be ten years down the line.

Driven by Destiny It would have been a cakewalk for Ravindra had he taken over the practice of his father, a reputed doctor with 45 years of experience. But, he took the harder option of standing on his own. He married Dr.Pallavi from Vizag, and chose this city for his professional startup. Later he obtained fellowship in Uro Oncology from Singapore General Hospital.

7.30 am- Time for surgeries

Being chained to one hospital hinders him from reaching out to all segments of the society. Hence he chose to be a freelance consultant. Today he works as an honorary consultant to hospitals of different categories. He also runs his own clinic at Doctors’ Enclave. The self-effacing doctor says, “My growth has been through word of mouth.”

9.30 pm- Home calling. Watch TV, have dinner, some medical reading and sleep.

Challenges The journey wasn’t a rosy one as Vizag was alien to him. “Academics too interest me. I even got an offer from Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati. But on the advice of a senior, I chose to practise than preach,” says Ravindra. The biggest challenge that was awaiting him was the lack of general awareness to his stream. “It is hard to believe but many physicians themselves don’t know when or whom to refer a patient. Many don’t even know the difference between urology and nephrology. This is a big hurdle because the cases come to me on reference from the primary care physicians. Many times patients come late and at precarious stage,” he laments.

“Vizagites are still fine with open surgery. I want them to slowly switch to laparoscopic mode.” Advice “One needs to be clear in their aim and excel in the chosen field. You should compete with yourself and should have an internal audit or self-analyse. Learn from the experts, keeping your ego aside. In-depth study, self-updating and exposure to the latest developments are imperative. One should know when to operate and when not to as the timing is very important. Academically she is brilliant and we share our cases, experiences and clear each other’s doubts.

Educating the public is the only way out, he feels. This is what takes him to many fora to sensitise people. On his own he conducts seminars at various clubs and institutes. He also tries to educate individual patients to disseminate the message. He is one of the few doctors who has a website of his own visakhaurologycenter.com. USP He deals with all the subspecialties of urology, which include paediatric urology, endo-urology, andrology, female urology, laparoscopic urology, uro oncology and renal transplant. However, paediatric urology is what interests him the most. He has operated on even a 5-day patient. He is known for his transplant and reconstruction skills in the entire region. He has an unparalled expertise in laparoscopic urology. Vision He wants to set up his own centre which will offer best service to the rich and the poor alike, stressing on minimal invasive procedures and daycare facility surgery. He wishes to team up with likeminded urologists. “The introduction of Aarogyasri has created hurdles in my project. One needs to meet the government norms to be recognised for urology. This involves

Pallavi Completes Me: Ravindra “Professionally we complement each other and she is the best thing that ever happened to me. Academically she is brilliant, that way we share our cases, experiences and clear each other’s doubts. She is very caring and takes good care of the kids and me. She needs lots of pampering. I wonder if I do it to her expectation. She can read my mind, but I can’t.” THESE ARE A FEW OF HER FAVOURITES Colour - Pink Attire - A variety of styles and imported brands. Food - Italian and chocolates. Movies - She loves movies and drags me along. Actor/Actor - None in specific Book - She is a voracious reader BRINGING NEW LIFE If passion for medicine is in her DNA, excellence is what she achieved through pure dedication. The interview session with the suave and sophisticated Obstetrician and Gynaecologist was quite educating as she gives a no-holds-barred talk on her subject and life. We present tall, poised and ever-smiling Dr. M.N.V.Pallavi. Background Born to Dr.M.S.Raju a popular doctor and Mrs.Usha Raju, going for medicine was a natural course for her. By opening Pallavi Nursing Home, her father introduced the concept of nursing homes to Visakhapatnam. She obtained MBBS degree from Andhra Medical College. She was the recipient of all the awards and medals that were instituted for academic excellence. She passed out as the best outgoing student. After her graduation, she realized that her intrinsic passion was for a medical practice which is associated with joy. “Obstetrics is one branch that deals with new life,” she explains. Hence she obtained Post Graduation degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from the Manipal University. Real-time Application Her career began at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, followed by a stint at the Bombay Hospital where she was trained in vaginal reconstructive surgery. Later she served in a missionary hospital in a small East Godavari town. This trek from Mumbai to Ambajipeta exposed her to different classes of patients and working environment. She joined her father’s hospital and later moved to Manipal Woman and Child Hospital as a Consultant. In 2013 she joined newlylaunched Omni RK Super Speciality Hospital for Women and Children and is now working as the Chief Consultant - Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Gratification Every time a child is born, she is filled with elation and excitement. “Of course, there is also a double risk factor here, because we handle two lives. This is the only profession where one interacts with people at such a personal level that patients turn into friends and an extended family too.” The range of ‘Thank you’ notes on her table is a testimony to this.

Exclusive Element Although, she had her father’s hospital at her disposal, she was never interested in managing it. Practising and consultation were her priority. Stating that she is a onehospital-doctor, Pallavi says, “As I believe in giving undivided attention and care to my patients, I take cases only at one place. I see them through their pregnancies and deliveries. This is mutually beneficial- they feel secure with me and I give my best to them.” No wonder, she is one of the most popular doctors in town. Forte She majorly deals with high-risk pregnancies. “It is crucial to decide when to terminate the pregnancy or when to deliver the child.” She is supported by a well-equipped neonatal intensive care unit at the hospital. As most of her patients come with history of recurrent miscarriages, diabetes and hypertension, saving the pregnancy against these odds becomes crucial. Till now I didn’t fail my patients,” she says with justified pride. She is also an expert in conducting minimally invasive surgical procedures. Comment on rise of C-section “In a facility like this one, where we majorly deal with high risk pregnancies the number of C-sections is high. No doctor purposely goes for it. Often expecting mothers are eager to know if it is a normal one or caesarean. It is very difficult to predict as often the decision is taken considering the whole pregnancy period and the condition on the operation table. “As for me whether it is a vaginal delivery or a caesarean, my definition of normal delivery is when both the mother and the newborn are normal.”

10 years it will cater to whole of east coast. She enjoys cooking, once she retires she wishes to learn varieties of cuisines. COMPATIBILITY METER We are intellectually on a par: Pallavi It was an arranged marriage, which took place when I was in second year of MBBS and he was doing his PG. Post-marriage we had to stay separately for almost seven years, meeting occasionally as we were pursuing higher studies. However, we managed to have our first kid (laughs). Overall he is quite open-minded and gives me space. We work as a team whenever required. At home he is a typical husband as everything is left to me. It would be nice if he can help me in the kitchen at least sometimes if not always. In 17 years, I managed to teach him how to make coffee. We have our fights, arguments, but we still discover each other, perhaps that keeps the show on! THESE ARE HIS FAVOURITES Colour - Shades of blue Food - Hyderabadi chicken dum biryani Movies - English movies Actor - Aamir Khan Actress - Sonali Bendre, Priyanka Chopra Accessories - He has no fancy for anything, not even gadgets Holiday Spot - Maldives. Of late he likes to travel.

Balancing Act “Perhaps that is why I chose a doctor as my partner,” she laughs. Managing both personal and professional life depends on what sort of family support one gets. She is lucky to have her mother staying close to her, who is always there for her. Both her daughters Aasrita and Anvitha are also understating. “I feel this nature runs in our genes, as I remember how my father had to drop a movie plan in the last minute as he had to attend to an emergency. But later he used to make up for it. When it comes to me, my elder daughter complains, especially if I am called away on a Sunday. She says she wished I were a teacher. But how can I help it? Deliveries don’t have timing, do they?” asks Pallavi, breaking into a hearty laugh. Fashion Statement She is one doctor who knows her fashion and makes her own style statement and she upped the fashion ante for doctors in the city of destiny. Progress Prediction “Minimally invasive surgeries are sure to go up. Robotic surgeries might also penetrate our market. There is a visible innovation of foetal medicine and it will grow more.” Future plans She wishes to make Omni RK Hospital a centre of excellence for Obstetrics and Gynaecology by developing a team of specialists from different sub specialties. She wants to make it the best referral centre for high risk pregnancies and laparoscopy. After bifurcation of the state, she predicts Vizag will be a health hub in Seemandhra and in

he one thing that everybody seems to be crazy about these days is ‘fitness’. No wonder that the city is flooded with fitness centres of various hues. However, with the growing number of gyms, there has been a makeover in the very concept of fitness. Sensing this change, Pradeep Roy, a fitness trainer himself, launched Roy’s Dumbells and Dreams, which with its very entry changed the whole perception of fitness and gave it a new dimension in “staying healthy”. Within a span of four years, it has become the city’s most preferred fitness centre and people who believe in healthy living would definitely vouch for it. Take a look at handsome Pradeep, you are bound to believe in the power of staying healthy. He is humble, friendly and absolutely straightforward. He touches on various aspects of health and life in an interview with red

Excerpts Early Life I was brought up in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. After graduating in Commerce I went to UK to pursue studies in management and gain overseas work experience in my area of interest, which has always been fitness training. Even as I was studying, I started working as a part-timer as an assistant physical fitness trainer and lending a hand in the gym management. Taking up a number of odd jobs, I used to pay for my studies. I have been into fitness right from my childhood. In those days, there was not much information about fitness training as it is now. I would try an exercise suggested by someone first on myself to study the impact and used to pass it on to the others. In 1992 I decided to get into the fitness industry as a professional. So I seriously started studying and researching the subject. After a long stay in UK I returned to India. Dreams Realised I was always keen on setting up my own fitness centre back home. So, I started working on the project in full earnest. It took me nearly five years to study the market and gather the needed information. During that period I used to give personal training to a few clients. I was a newcomer to this city and knew very few people. Hence I had no one to depend on. The groundwork itself took a lot of time as I did not want to compromise on the quality in any aspect. Finally in 2010 my Roy’s Dumbells and Dreams took shape and started functioning.

sprouting almost at every nook and corner. Also, despite having various options of location, I chose Banjara Hills because I wanted my centre to be in a good locality. Starting a fitness centre and running it have been a struggle. This July we have completed four years and the journey so far has been like organising a marathon event. Ensuring good service and managing the infrastructure in an upmarket location like Banjara Hills, keeping ahead of rival are extremely difficult. I struggled a lot to reach the position I am in today. Flow of Info I know, these days everybody knows fitness tips and everybody is a budding trainer. Both lack of information and excess of it too have advantages and disadvantages. The deluge of information available over the Internet has its pros and cons. It is particularly good from the clients’ point of view. They cannot be fooled easily. You suggest to them any exercise, posture or diet and they surf online to know for themselves if it is effective. On the flipside with so many fitness videos and diet charts available on the net, people blindly follow without realizing that all fitness regimes and diet charts don’t suit everybody. Only a trained trainer knows what suits whom because he does a detailed study of the client’s body composition and structure. Therefore, it is very essential for people to understand that fitness is not a generalized science but a specific technique related to individual body to achieve fitness.

Christening Fitness is everyone’s dream and exercising (symbolized by dumbell) is the only route to realise it. It also depicts my dream of helping people to realize their dreams through that classical tool of exercising - the dumbell! Including my surname has become important because I have been giving the training. In order to leave a lasting impression of the ‘dream’ aspect on the mind of the aspirant, I suffixed the word.

He is a very caring and honest person

Lastly, the difference between Roy’s Dumbell and Dreams and any other gym is its philosophy – journey through a lifetime of fitness and health. USP Personal attention is our USP. These days, for getting a personal trainer in any gym one needs to pay a lot of money. We also offer personal trainer service but I ensure that personalized attention is given to our general members too. I recall the days when I went into fitness for myself, I could not get exclusive attention for two reasons - one I could not afford it and secondly, there were very few trained trainers. At our fitness centre, all the trainers are handpicked and I don’t tolerate any mistakes. On first mistake the trainer is warned and the next time he is‘out’. Challenges Fitness industry is a very competitive one, with gyms

She knows and understands me completely.

Present Scenario These days gyms are the new socializing places. People come to build their contacts. In my gym too occasionally people request me to introduce them to some of my high profile clientele. Also, there has been a paradigm shift in people’s perception of fitness. Fitness for girls means looking slim so that they can wear all kinds of clothes. For men, it is to look like Salman Khan or Hrithik Roshan. Once they achieve this target, they give up and obviously they regain the lost weight. A number of them join the gym to impress their partners or when their wedding is near. Once their love is answered or wedding is over, they are back to their blown up selves. Yet another problem is madness to lose weight fast. When people come to me with such requests, I say pointblank, “I can’t do it.” The myths Everybody is crazy about losing weight in a few months or making 6 pack, but that’s all trash. You can’t make it. If you do so, you would be spoiling your entire body composition and intestines. Starving will not make you lose weight but will definitely damage your resistance power and stamina. So, get out of this madness and move to healthy living. “Lose weight and stay fit, the healthy way” should be your mantra.

He is a very caring and honest person

Memorable moments I come across a number of people with strange demands like losing weight or developing 6 pack in record time. However, one incident I vividly remember. There is this guy who had joined us to lose weight. During the process, I guess one of my trainers suggested him to have protein supplement. He started taking that and there was no weight loss happening. Instead he was putting on weight, which left me totally baffled. Once I came to know what was going on, I advised him to quit taking it. His body showed signs of losing weight only after he followed my advice. In the present day hectic life our bodies do not get all the proteins and vitamins they need. But, that’s not the case with all. Those who have a healthy diet don’t need supplements. Perception of Fitness Fitness is an ongoing journey and not a static destination. Once you start, you must continue to move on, if you wish to stay healthy. Starting it with a target and leaving half way only spoil one’s muscle tone. Having a regular regimen not only keeps you physically fit but also mentally strong. This is absolutely essential in today’s world where life is competitive and people are continuously chasing targets. A good fitness regime builds confidence in people. It is all about working out regularly and eating right. I never tell my clients to starve. Eat everything but within limits and burn it with regular exercise.

red | august 2014 | 70

Fitness mantra As I said, fitness is not a course. It’s a lifelong commitment that you make to yourself. I am 48 and I still have 6 pack. I have been into fitness for the last 25 years. However busy I am, I never miss out on my daily exercise. At the same time, I don’t give up on anything. I eat everything, I drink and I know my limits. A couple of months ago I was unwell and could not do my workouts. Despite religiously working out for the last 25 years, just because I could not work out for a couple of months, I developed flab over my lower abdomen. So, once I was back to normal, I got back to my routine and got myself into shape.

only things that get you sustainable success. It may sound like a cliché, but that’s the truth. Future plans We are planning to start a couple of fitness centres in Hyderabad and one in Odisha. However, the plan of starting in Odisha will depend on the time available as I am very particular about what and how I want my fitness centres to be. Sign off thought Fitness is not for time pass. Be serious about it and make it an essential part of your life, if you wish to have a “Long healthy life.”

Guiding Force My brother Uday Sankar Roy. I lost my father when I was very young. It was my brother who took care of me, in fact of the whole family. Whatever I am today it is only because of him. Reposing great confidence in me, he has always supported me and encouraged me to do what I wanted. He is my support and guiding force. Success Mantra ‘Believe in yourself’ is my mantra. I am a self-made man. I have worked hard to reach this position. I have never tried to use my influential contacts for my gain. I believe hard work and honesty are the

Balancing personal and professional life I don’t find it difficult to balance my personal and professional life. I lead a very simple life with very few interests. Either I am at my gym or spending time with my family and friends. That’s it. Money or Fame? Satisfaction. Money comes and goes. Fame these days is nothing but how much you sweet-talk people or network with high profile contacts. But for me, doing my job with utmost honesty gives a satisfaction that’s worth million bucks. If money was my priority I could have made it through much easier ways. There have been days, when people have come to me saying, “I want to lose 15 kg in two months. I am ready to pay any amount of money.” I openly say, “No thanks, I can’t do it.” You can never lose something in three months that you have gained in nearly 20 years. I always give priority to my clients’ health and therefore, I guess I am not rich. (smiles)

Initially I felt that I would not join him but my mother said, ‘If you don’t go, some girls at the party may try to get close to your husband’,” says she bursting into a hearty laugh. On a serious note, I know being an entrepreneur, he needs to maintain certain social contacts for which he has to socialize and party. Initially when girls complimented him, I used to get very angry. Later, he made me so comfortable that I am not bothered anymore. Also, amidst all the girls and partying he ensures to make me feel special. Splitsville for Kim, Kanye? Looks like Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s marriage is on the rocks. Tabloid reports claim the Kimye relationship is heading for divorce after just 58 days, but other sources say this is not true. The latest reports about the duo’s divorce came after a cover story insisted West had abandoned his wife after less than two months of marriage. The tabloid claimed Kardashian is mad about West’s behavior but does not want to go through the drama of another divorce. It seems Kim is so obsessed with her image that she doesn’t want to suffer the public humiliation. She has no choice but to accept Kanye’s neglect but still hopes he will make an effort in their marriage.

Joseph Marries Persia The delicious star of ‘The Originals’ Joseph Morgan exchanged vows with Persia White in an intimate ceremony in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, the couple confirms to People. “It had a very rustic feel to it,” White says. “There was nothing about it that was overwhelming or very huge or fabulous in that way. We tried to keep everything really intimate and beautiful and sort of going along with nature.” Morgan added that he tied his own bow tie for the first time in honor of his big day, while fellow actor Matt Ryan served as his Best Man. The newlyweds met on the set ‘The Vampire Diaries Season 3’ and tied the knot in front of 26 guests at a private villa, within sight of where they got engaged. White says she hopes to have kids in the near future. red | august 2014 | 72

BOLLYWOOD MASALA Soha To Tie The Knot Actress Soha Ali Khan is on the Cloud Nine after actor Kunal Khemmu, with whom she has been in relationship, proposed to her. She too reciprocated and took to Twitter to share the happy news with her fans. “It gives me great happiness to share with you all that Kunal proposed to me in Paris with the most perfect ring in the world and I said yes,” tweeted the actress. Looks like the 35year-old’s mom Sharmila Tagore’s wish of seeing her daughter as a married woman is soon going to materialise. Soha is known for her roles in ‘Rang De Basanti’ and ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan.’

Ranbir, Deepika’s Romantic Video Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone are shooting for Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming film ‘Tamasha’ on the beautiful island of Corsica, west of Italy. Their pictures from the sets of the film made their way on the internet and a video shows how the ex-flames having a fun time together. The duo is only shooting for a song sequence and while Ranbir is looking uber cool in chrome yellow pants with grey tee and a blue jacket, Deepika is looking pretty in a navy blue dress with a white jacket. Earlier the duo gave a blockbuster ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’. Whether or not they rewrite the success story with ‘Tamasha’, we are gonna see some sizzling chemistry between Ranbir and Deepika.

TOLLYWOOD MASALA Shruthi-Charan Encore! Mega Power Star Ram Charan and Shruthi Haasan churned out a hit ‘Yevadu’ this year. If sources are to be believed, she is likely to be roped in to act opposite Ram Charan’s next film to be directed by Srinu Vaitla. She also gave hits with other heroes from the Mega Family. Who can forget her in movies like ‘Gabbar Singh’ opposite Pawan Kalyan and ‘Race Gurram’ where she teamed up with Allu Arjun? Both are blockbusters. Ram Charan is currently busy with his 'Govindhudu Andarivaadele' movie. His new movie with Shruthi is expected to go on to floors in November. The film will be produced by D.V.V.Danayya under Universal Media banner.

Yet another ‘Magadheera’ In Making? Though directed by different directors, Bellamkonda Sai Srinivas’ debut film ‘Alludu Seenu’ is compared with Ramcharan’s first film ‘Chirutha’. While the former is directed by V.V.Vinayak, the latter by Puri Jagannath. Both the films made it big at the BO. Now speculations are rife that ace director Rajamouli might direct Sai’s second film, like he had held the megaphone for Mega Power Star’s second film ‘Magadheera’ that broke all the records in the annals of Tollywood. Sai said that he had not listened to any scripts. Yet the teaming up of Rajamouli-Sai is possible sooner or later. The budding hero looked at ease at dances, fights and in performance oriented scenes that served as credentials for any top director’s movie. We can expect sensational news only after the completion of ‘Baahubali’. Presence of Jakkanna at ‘Alludu Seenu’ audio function adds gist to this gossip mill.

Hailing from Tanuku, the builder who is also a body builder made Vizag his abode. He is of the opinion that the ‘films’ offer a lot more compared to his ‘firm’. He roped in our own Telugu girl Anjali of Razole to play the protagonist of the film. It is a woman-centric film that revolves round the heroine. Associated with the writing of ‘Geethanjali’, writer Kona Venkat who is presenting the film, is confident that the horror comedy will be a watershed in Anjali’s career. “Anjali will get recognition similar to what Anushka and Jyothika got with their respective films ‘Arundhati’ and ‘Chandramukhi’. The script is laced with interesting twists and turns,” said Kona. Power Star Pawan Kalyan has released the first poster of the movie. If the horror comedy hits the jackpot, industry people feel that he may launch his son as a hero in the industry a la Bellamkonda Suresh who introduced his

son Sai Sreenivas as the hero in ‘Alludu Seenu’ that shook the Box Office. Even the story of this film is written by Kona Venkat.

TURNS SITA GEETHANJALI By Avinash Chandra Gembali

F

ailure is the key to success, is a saying that fits perfect for her. Her ‘Photo’ failed to impress the Telugu audience. She even failed to woo them with her ‘Premalekha...’. Though hailing from Razole, she made her successful ‘Journey’ to the Telugu tinsel town via Chennai only. A la yesteryear heroine Sarada who too had failed to win at home first, Anjali made it big in Kollywood before being unrolled a red carpet in Telugu industry. It is better late than never and she never missed the bus. red | august 2014 | 78

She made it into the hearts of Telugu audience as Sita in ‘Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu’ playing opposite ‘Victory’ Venkatesh. Though her ‘Masala’, yet another multi-starrer, was not much ‘spicy’, her another film ‘Balupu’ made her ‘strong’ in the industry. She is now all set to enchant us with her horror comedy ‘Geethanjali’ where she plays heroinecentric role. Let us hope the film will remain as a milestone in her career as ‘Jyothi’ for Jayasudha and ‘Arundathi’ for Anushka. Three Filmfare awards apart from several others for her consummate performance in Tamil speak volumes of this Cindrella of sort.

‘Balupu.’ Your comment. I was supposed to do the film after my ‘Journey’ as someone was insisting on me. But the shoot of the film started very late. I felt it was a kind of luck for me playing opposite yet another big actor Ravi Teja.

behind your success. I never aspire for regular ‘commercial’ roles. Why I am interested in performance oriented role is that the audience can easily recognize me and ‘connect’ to my character. That is my specialty and that fetches me laurels.

Your first two Telugu films ‘Photo’ and ‘Premalekha Raasa’ were damp squibs at the Box Office. What went wrong? I really don’t know what went wrong with those films. I did put in a lot of efforts in them like what I put in ‘SVSC’. We, actors can do acting and the rest is left to fate. I feel the whole team is responsible for the success/failure of a film.

Apart from Tamil and Telugu what are the other languages you are into? Kannada and Malayalam

After a gap of 7 years since you made debut in Telugu, you acted in a multi-starrer ‘Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu.’ The film was a biggest grosser in 2013. What was your reaction when you were offered the role? I was very happy as the role appeared to have been tailor-made for me and people said I fit the bill. The film received mixed reviews and a lot of encomiums poured in for my performance.

Though hailing from Razole you failed to impress the Telugu audience in the beginning but you made it big in Tamil with your first film ‘Kattradhu Thamizh’ itself that fetched you two awards. Your comment. Actually what happened was that no one knows that I did ‘Photo’ in Telugu and my debut movie in Tamil simultaneously and the Tamil movie was a hit. I played opposite Jiva who was a big star that time. The film is written and directed by newcomer Ram. I got a positive feedback for my role. Obviously when we churn out good hits industry will definitely give us boost. Luckily I have got good opportunities in Tamil.

EXCERPTS

It is said that the film is Trisha’s loss and Anjali’s gain as the former spurned the role. Your comment. I don’t know the reason why many a heroine rejected the role including Trisha even though it is a fantastic one. Tell us about your experience of sharing the screen with stalwarts like Venkatesh and Mahesh Babu in the film. Though they are big stars they are very cool. Venkatesh sir helped me to mingle with the team. He is well known for his performances. He was very helpful to me during the shoot. Mahesh Babu was very friendly with me from the second day of the shoot. Bowled over by your performance in the film, Venkatesh is said to have recommended you for yet another multi-starrer ‘Masala’. Your comment. I completely deny this. I don’t think anyone can recommend anyone. If there is a hit pair, producers always try to rope in them again. Since we gave a hit with ‘SVSC’ I was roped in to play opposite Venkatesh in ‘Masala’. In the same year (2013) you were roped in to play opposite Raviteja in

After doing so many films in Tamil, did you feel comfortable acting in Telugu films? Of course, because my mother tongue is Telugu. If I say I am not comfortable no one will agree with me. Moreover, I am comfortable with Tamil also because I have been in Chennai for 8 years. Since I am a Telugu girl, the industry here is very supportive to me and it takes more interest in me. You are noted for playing ‘performance oriented roles.’ Your comment. I love to do that. I am not interested in doing two-songs-and-three-scenes roles. My audience should feel that I did a good character not like that they cannot remember where I am in the movie. They should remember me even after leaving the theatres. I want to prove myself that I can do any kind of roles. In a short span of 8 years, you did 23 films and one is in preproduction stage. Tell us the secret

Did you find any difference, actingwise, in Telugu and other languages? As far as Tamil and Telugu films are concerned I don’t find any difference because I am well versed with both the languages. Coming to Malayalam and Kannada I am a little bit confused as I cannot talk and understand those languages. I definitely do justice to my role whatever the character I play and whatever the language film I act in. To which do you give importance – glamour roles or emotive roles? Hmm. It is a typical question. All the time we cannot play performanceoriented roles as people get bored of it and at the same time we cannot do glamour roles always. I just want to mix them up and whatever I do I should do it with much élan. Even glamour roles should get some kind of importance. However, I am always fastidious about my roles. What are your upcoming movies? ‘Geetanjali’ in Telugu. In Tamil I am doing two films, one opposite ‘Jayam’ Ravi. A Kannada movie opposite Puneet is also in the offing. Tell us about your current film ‘Geethanjali’ being produced by Vizag based realtor M.V.V.Satyanarayana. First time I am doing a complete heroine centric film. It is a horror comedy with an entertainment element thrown into it. I am playing Geethanjali and it is a challenging role for me. The story is really fantastic. Out of 23 movies I did, I play a different kind of role in the film. What is the progress of the film? When is it going to hit the screen? The exact date of release is not yet fixed. Are you dubbing your own dialogues? Do you find difficult to lip sync? Right from my first movie I have been dubbing my own dialogues. red | august red | march2014 2014| |79 85

What are the criteria you consider for selecting a role? My character should be very fantastic and the role should convince me. I am particular about my co-star and other team in the film. Do you feel TV channels a threat to the survival of cinema? I don’t know anything about this, so I don’t want to make any comments on these things. What is that change you want to see in the society as a youngster? I want security for women. Some movies did focus on this issue.Of late, women are tense till they reach home. The government should enact laws to check injustice/violence being meted out to women. Who is your guiding force in your family? I am just taking care of myself. I love to be an independent. Tell us about your family background My parents are no more. I have two brothers, one sister and I am the last one. Tell us about your education. I finished plus 2 and entered film industry. If not actor, what would you have been? If not an actor, I wanted to be a lawyer. Do you have any serious relationships? No. I don’t have any. You were into modeling before coming to films. Tell us about your experience. I was into modeling for six months or so before entering the film industry. I did a few commercials too. I won Miss South India, Tamil Nadu. Which one do you prefer most – modeling or acting? Acting. I just love to act.

It seems a ban has been urged in all the four south Indian industries till you complete director Kalanjiyam’s ‘Oor Sutri Puranam’. Why so? As the matter is sub-judice, I cannot even comment on it. Your comment on your late night party pics along with certain fimmakers who were heavily drunk, that have been leaked online. Since it was my birthday party I had to be there (in the party). How can you expect me to be the ‘Seethamma Vakitlo’ girl even in my personal life? One more thing I want to tell you that I never drink. I just cut the birthday cake and came out. What transpired in between puzzled me indeed. Any plans to direct/produce movies? No. red | august 2014 | 80

Obviously when we churn out good hits industry will definitely give us boost.

What are you scared of? Snakes, cockroaches and darkness Your favourite star? Stars in the sky

SNAP SHOTS

Do you have any role models? No role models, but I like some actresses like Sridevi (I am a big fan of her), Kareena Kapoor and Kajol. What can be found in your handbag? My handbag is a kind of mini suitcase. I can put anything in the bag. In my ‘suitcase’ you can find my mobile, wallet etc

If a pair becomes a hit, producers always try to rope in the same again.

Your favourite directors. My very first director (Tamil) Ram, Vasanthabalan sir, Srikanth sir and my ‘Journey’ director Saravanan sir. Are you a fitness freak? Yes of course. If you leave me now, I go to gym Do you have any diet plan? I have pucca diet plans. I am not a foodie. I would like to see food but not to have it. I always follow my diet. Are you religious? Yes. I pray to God Who is your first crush? May be somewhere in school days and I don’t remember. What attracts you in people? People, who don’t throw an attitude. I don’t even talk to such people who throw attitude. You receive compliments for… My performance Your favourite perfume Burberry How are you enjoying your celebrity status? I am enjoying it to the hilt. Wherever I go people shower me with love. When can we expect Anjali to tie the knot? Do you want to send me out of the industry? I don’t understand why you want me thrown out. Give me some more time. I will choose some guy whose qualities are similar to that of mine and then tie the knot. Not in near future.

I am not interested in doing two-songs -and-threescenes roles.

MERCEDES MARVE

By Avinash Chandra Gembali

I

t is raining crossovers all over the world and even the big German manufacturers have decided to create smaller cars. Among them is Mercedes-Benz that comes up with GLA crossover. Mercedes is launching its rival to the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3 in the form of the GLA with an expected price between Rs.27-Rs 30 lakh. At the outset, the car resembles the A-Class and the BClass. A large two-slat grille finished in a shade of matte silver with chrome accents dominates the GLA’s front fascia. It showcases a distinctive line that emerges from the headlamp and extends all the way to the rear wheel arch. Fitted with the large tail lamps and having the almost coupe-esque profile, the GLA looks appealing. Though it comes with standard 17-inch wheels, buyer can go for 18” or 19” wheels. Interior looks classy and sporty. It is available with a 5-seater configuration with the wide choice of seat upholsteries and colour combination. With petrol and diesel options, GLA features a McPherson front axle and an independent multilink rear suspension. Combined with the large wheels and tyres, the GLA is quite a treat to drive, especially on broken and uneven roads that are common in India. Last but not the least it is endowed with electro-mechanical power steering and disc brakes.

SMART SWEET

By Avinash Chandra Gembali

The new LG G3 big, bright, sharp and impressive! You can see how thin the bezels are: LG has managed to squeeze in a huge 5.5- display into a phone that's not larger the 5-phones. All the buttons are on the back giving it a clean look. The screen is a thing of beauty. It has four times the number of pixels which gives it the highest pixel density when compared to S5 & M8. The laser-assisted auto focus is one of its highlights. Photographs are definitely amongst the best we've seen from smartphones, with the optical image stabilisation stepping in to take care of shaky hands. The only drawback is that you can't switch the OIS off, so recording from a moving vehicle gives you weird wobbly video.

DESTINY DELHI MAY HER TRIBE GROW By V. Sarada

M

ajority is the magic word here. Mrs.Kothapalli Geetha has not only won the LS seat with an impressive majority of 91,398 votes but is also clearly in the majority of first timers who answer for 315 of the 543 members in the 16th Lok Sabha. It is a common practice that aspirants choose the parties which serve as vehicles and go wherever the parties reach them. But here is a contender, who chose YSRCP only after making sure that it would reach her to Parliament. Yes, such is the clarity of thought and resolve of Geetha who started her political career only one and a half years ago. However, she has been into public life much before she joined politics. Political career is not all that hunky-dory, according to her. “It has been a saga of sacrifice, suffering and struggle, insists Geetha as she looks back at the path she trod and shares her experiences.

Shoot by Dhana Vijay

Excerpts First day in Parliament “It was a day of mixed feelings. I was nervous and excited. Of course, I was equally thrilled to be one of the lawmakers of the country. It was a great feeling for me, a novice, who had no political background, to sit with all those big leaders. I don’t know if that existed earlier but now I see an aura of camaraderie and bonhomie and no one talks in terms of parties. We are all looked at as the representatives of people and not as rivals.” From Government to Governance For Geetha, a bureaucrat-turned-politician, it was a shift from an executive role to the legislative role. “I realised long ago that the lawmakers are more powerful when it comes to scripting the fate of people. My father the late Mr. Jacob, who retired as a Deputy Collector, used to say that if we really had to make a difference to the society and serve people, it could be done only through politics. That sowed the seeds of political ambition in me,” recalls Geetha. Early Childhood “Born to a couple at a rather late stage of their lives and with a brother much senior to me, I lived a highly insulated life. My father, besides being a friend, guide and philosopher, was my constant companion. By the time I reached the 6th standard, my father retired from the service and his life used to veer around me. Except for those few hours at school, we were always together. I had my schooling in Rajahmundry, where we moved because of my father’s failing health as it was the nearest urban area to our native place, Addatheegala, Thimmapuram.” Marital Bliss My husband Mr. Paruchuri Rama Koteswara Rao’s family and that of mine are friends for years. It was an inter-caste and love marriage, with barely any resistance from either side. I owe all my success to him. He admires me for my courage and the focused way I go about my tasks. Ours is an exemplary marriage, the ten-year-gap notwithstanding. Even now he treats me like a child, showering care. In these 24 years of our married life, I don’t remember a single incident when he raised his voice on me. Though our occupations keep us physically apart, we are together in spirit. Almost every hour, he calls me to find out my welfare. In fact, people are jealous of us. Multi-tasking Starting her career with Godavari Gramin Bank at the age of 20, Geetha went on amassing degrees (three masters and a B.Ed), besides clearing Group-1 examination. Education, competitive exams, career and children- all this ran parallel, keeping her on her toes. “Though my husband has been a flourishing businessman, I wanted to be financially independent, emulating my mother Mrs. Lizie who worked as a teacher.” “I had to fight a protracted legal battle to establish my credentials when I got selected for Group -1 services. After the air was cleared, I was posted as the Deputy Collector at Hyderabad and later at Ranga Reddy.”

Welfare Activities “I always saw my father deeply involved in social service dealing with adult education and old age homes. But I realised the value of his work only when thousands of people came to mourn his death. I believe that that is the only way one should live and go. In 2007 I floated the General & Environmental Education for Tribal Health Action (GEETHA) of which my husband is the chairman. This nongovernmental voluntary organisation covered health care services in 34 tribal mandals during the first year itself. Since then it has been continuing its good work.” The Political Plunge “My husband shifted to Chennai on business and the children to Good Shepherd, Ooty. I left my job in 2010 at the behest of my children. My life was absolutely smooth with my husband encouraging me to continue with social welfare activities. I never consciously worked towards politics. A strong believer in destiny, I had some hunch that I would land in politics one day. My target has been always New Delhi, as I have no interest in state politics.”

Tough Choice Politics is a path strewn with thorns. When you appear for an exam, you can gauge the result going by your performance, where as politics is such a test where you may not get through even after the best of your efforts and impeccable performance. How the voter mind works is beyond anyone’s guess. Entry to YSRCP “My husband knew Mr. Jagan through a common friend. I entered the party only after ensuring that I would be contesting for a parliamentary seat. However, I am here only after a lot of twists and turns, surmounting tremendous resistance and facing resentment from the senior party leaders, especially from men of all the four constituencies. They put every possible spoke in the wheel.” Dispelling the popular belief that it is the MP candidate who carries MLA candidates along with him to success, Geetha says that it is the MLA candidates who take the ground level initiatives on which the MP candidates build the success of the party. “By the time I got into the field, the MLA contestants were not decided and no one was ready to work for me. It was the ‘whose-baby-are-we-holding’ situation. My brother-in-law who had earned considerable experience as a TDP man stood by me. I did my groundwork engaging teams of students and created a network.

In Parliament, we are all representatives of people and not rivals.

My NGO also came in handy. I worked hard to win,” says Geetha with justified pride. Sensitive Area Though I represent the agency areas, I face no problems either from the locals or extremists and I move around freely because they know I am there to do good for them. MP at Work Araku is a very unique constituency with six tribal segments spread over four districts. The developmental activities are controlled by Integrated Tribal Development Agencies (ITDA). Most of the MPs and MLAs know their own functions and rights. None of them held a review meeting with the Project Officers. So when I called for one, there was a big hue and cry. I told them that this was just the beginning and I would not tolerate any incompetence or inefficiency. When Expectations Went Wrong “Even today the poor remember YSR as their messiah. Though his schemes were not really being implemented for the past three years because of the chaos and confusion in the government, I expected that people would prefer to bring his son to the power during the recent elections. However, the factors like TDP-BJP alliance and the emergence of NDA at the Centre turned the tables. The voter thought that he would be benefited only when there was an understanding between the state and Central governments. Of course, we respect the people’s mandate. I hope the BJP-led government will fulfil its promises and it is too early to gauge their performance.” Toeing Jagan’s Line “I am chosen as the deputy floor leader and being inducted in a number of committees. I shall continue with YSRCP because ultimately my comfort level is what matters to me. Jagananna is cordial and friendly and gives me a lot of importance, reposing faith in me. He is an excellent leader and I hope he will come out of all his problems. He wielded a lot of power and is good as an Opposition leader too. He has seen ups and downs. Once he makes up his mind to support someone he will go to any extent to help them. He feels very grateful to the people who joined him in the first stretch and obliges them, sometimes ignoring their follies which damage his image. I have seen no indication of his joining hands with Congress. I think he prefers to stand on his own feet like Sharad Pawar.”

red | august 2014 | 88

‘Modi, A Charmer’ “He is a wonderful person. He is very dynamic. When asked him for 15 minutes of his time to discuss the problems related to my constituency, he said, “Why 15 minutes Geetha, I shall give 30 minutes.” He seemed to have picked up my name from the nameplate placed on the table in front of me at a luncheon meet.

On State Bifurcation The Congress had messed up the state to the extent that it will take two to three years to consolidate itself. Support from Centre will only help us to the extent of finding our feet. Woman as a Politician With our women reluctant to enter public life, I wonder if the goal of achieving 33% reservation for them in Parliament would ever fructify. However, there are good reasons for this. The worst of all is character assassination. Many of them don’t like the idea of woman entering and rising in politics and the easiest way to discourage her is to sling mud at her. This is the strongest deterrent for any self-respecting woman. I myself faced this many times and was totally demoralised. But for my husband I would have rushed back to the safety of my home long ago. More than support, what a woman needs is her husband’s understanding and his faith in her. Personal and professional life A woman’s performance depends basically on two factors – her own happiness at home and 100% support of the family. A man may support his wife with ulterior motives and she may step out under duress. This cannot be called true freedom for her and can be disastrous. The support can be described as genuine only if a man sends his wife out to see and help her grow. Feminism “People say that women are equal to men. But I say they are better than men. I am not a feminist. I know men are stronger than us and we are living in a male-dominated society but women have more abilities and emotional strength.” Dreams for the Underprivileged Woman I am very optimistic about the future of Indian women. Politics will also change. There will be fair politics if women enter it in larger numbers. We have to strive for an all round development of women, with special focus on education. Doing my own bit, I encourage even my domestic helps also to pursue education. Similarly, if the government takes initiatives of this kind a lot more girls will come out. There are innumerable avenues open for them in modern India.

Politics will be fair if women enter it in large numbers

To Unwind I love music and listen to melodies, read books on philosophy, especially that of Osho, besides housekeeping and cooking. People call me a great cook. My children go ga-ga over the coconut rice, egg fried rice, prawn fry and chillie chicken I make. On Home front Both my children are good and obedient. My son Abhinay Tej is now studying in the US. He is a very responsible boy and he trusts me to the extent that he thinks all the decisions I take and suggestions I give to him or his friends are the best. My daughter often complains that I go into a trance talking of my son. My daughter Anvita is a fantastic girl and people call her a livewire. She is shrewd and independent like her father. So I feel she will probably go towards politics. Of course right now she plans to go to the London School of Economics for further studies. HER THOUGHTS • • • •

Philanthropic Fashionista By V. Sarada

G

iving back to society is the new buzz in almost all fields of contemporary society. The world of fashion, which is always associated with glitz, glamour and grandeur, is no exception to this phenomenon. Many fashionistas, who have a philanthropic bone are coming together to support social causes. Araaish, a luxury exhibition is one such endeavour in which opulence stands for the underprivileged. Bringing this venerable activity to Hyderabad, Ms.Samia Alam Khan organises the high-profile event, proceeds of which are utilised for those on the lowest rung of the community. The vice-chair of YFLO this year, Samia will be taking the reins of the prestigious organisation next year. red | august 2014 | 90

On one end of the spectrum, the suavé, stylish, independent and very soft- spoken Samia is passionately involved with fashion and on the other she is deeply dedicated to the noble cause of uplifting the children sans pleasures of childhood. With an event round the corner and the Holy Month of Ramzan in progress, the lady was on her toes. Yet there could not have been a better and more opportune time to talk of the organiser who won allround applause for conducting the previous expos with stupendous success. While in conversation, the highly articulate Samia amply indicates that her thoughts and objectives are as charming and beautiful as she herself is. Here we present Samia Alam Khan. Early Grooming “I grew up in Hyderabad, my parents Mr.Rajendar Singh Dhingra and Mrs.Jasbir, raised me and my two siblings with down to earth values. My father was in the travel and automobile industry. I am greatly inspired by him and the exemplary life he leads, running it on high principles and uncompromising ethics. “I was a good student,” always figuring among the top few in the class. I am a commerce graduate and completed my education obtaining a dual MBA (Finance and Marketing). Being the eldest of the three siblings, responsibility of the family came to me very naturally and at a very early age! Not the one to shy away from it, I took to work like fish to water. I was barely 12 when I started assisting my father in his business. Yet I had a very happy childhood like any other youngster and my formative years were easy and laidback falling in line with the Hyderabadi lifestyle. Coming from a progressive family with secular ideals, we celebrated all the festivals. We had loads of fun, flying kites during Sankrantri and bursting crackers during Diwali. Our rewards were small tokens handed out by our elders for our trivial or bigger achievements. To put it in nutshell, we were outdoor children, quite converse to the gizmo addicts of today!”

with a lot of scope and has endless need. So every drop goes in to fill an ocean.” Araaish Initiative 'Araaish' is an initiative close to my heart and I am its partner in Hyderabad. It is a fund raising arm for 'Save the Children India', the NGO that lends a helping hand to the destitute women and children. It is a day-long exhibition event and it lives up to its motto 'where glamour and giving go together'. This is my third year with them and we are coming up with our next show on 20th August at Taj Deccan, Hyderabad. Each year we strive to make the experience better by getting some of the most glamorous names from across the country under one roof! Some of the star designers who are gracing the upcoming event are Seema Khan, Queenie Dhodhy, Priya Awasthy, Maheep Kapoor and Mana Shetty. We have many more exciting names yet to be revealed. First Step Towards Araaish “At hindsight it feels rather funny to think how things fell in place. We knew that ‘Araaish’ is a big name in the fashion/exhibition scene in India. One day, sitting in a coffee-shop, I quite randomly told my friend that I was going to bring ‘Araaish’ to Hyderabad. It came out of the blue without any background or logic. Surprisingly, next month my husband Manzoor and I were in Delhi and called on a designer friend. As if she read my mind, she introduced me to the Mumbai team of ‘Araaish’ and the rest is history.

I don't want to be just 'good' I want be 'great' at whatever I do.

Career path “I always had a passion for fashion! Like any fresh graduate I had my fill, so to speak, of the corporate world, spent a couple of years dabbling with ITES and KTES industries. Later I got involved in raising a young family. I had some space and time of my own only when my kids Sanya and Aftab started becoming independent. Then I had my true calling which was clothes and fashion! So it happened purely by choice not by chance. When the first opportunity knocked I gave it my best shot. Things started evolving and one thing led to another and different verticals presented themselves. I would like to believe that it is still early days and I haven't yet tapped my full potential! Each day, in fact, each event is a learning experience. Luckily for me my profession is my passion too. This is a great and winning equation for anyone. I feel it is just the beginning and as Robert Frost says, 'I have miles to go before I sleep'. I truly believe in ‘Do what makes you happy.’” Silent service “Charity is a personal trait. I believe in the proverb ‘the left hand should not know what the right hand is giving and vice-versa.’ True charity is done silently. It's an area red | august 2014 | 91

First Experience Before the Araaish experience I used to conduct private exhibitions on a smaller platform but with a similar concept. When we did the first Araaish show, I absolutely didn’t have a clue about how to organise an event of that magnitude. When it is on a large scale and in the public eye, a lot many factors go into it like logistics, marketing, organising, vendor management etc. It was a thorough learning experience. As first timers, we had to start from the scratch and since it is a competitive field help did not come in abundance. But on one fine August rainy day (on the day of the show) it gave me immense happiness to see my efforts pay off.

If women are given an equal standing the workforce of the country doubles in its strength and potential

Overcoming Hurdles As I mentioned, it was not very easy to get advice or guidance from others to conduct exhibitions and you don’t have the luxury of falling back on your earlier experience. Marketing is the toughest facet of organising a mega show. Obviously everything including marketing is budgeted. Making appropriate and affective choices, staying within the budget, is a tough call. I was proud that I could do it without any experience. Moreover, the very thought that some of the old standing names in the world of exhibitions were following my marketing strategies for their shows, itself was very exhilarating. Overwhelming Response I am sure people do think of the humane side of Araaish and hence generously respond to it. I am thankful to Hyderabad and its people for supporting us and coming out in large numbers. We have lesser number of designers compared to the other exhibitions but we have exclusive leaders in the field and our clients appreciate this quality. I am also proud of the fact that we are able to bring in some of the very known and celebrated designers like Mandira Bedi, Vikram Phadnis, Sagarika Ghatge and Vidya Malwade (’Chak De India’ fame), Queenie Dhody, Maheep Kapoor and Masaba Richards. The Mumbai chapter of ‘Araaish’ is known to have hordes of celebrated designers. Now I am confident of roping in many of them to our shores as we move on.

Educate the girl child!

red | august 2014 | 92

Meeting Manzoor I met Manzoor at a very young age when I was barely16. Destiny would have it we kept bumping into each other at public places and events. Like any gawky shy teenagers we never made the first move, finally one of us mustered enough courage and we broke the ice! We got married when I was 21! Multitasking Well! Even I have had my fill of domesticity and have come around it. When I had a young family I took a sabbatical from my career and professional life and only when my kids came of age I've let my interests evolve. But one need to have the desire to pursue a career or a profession within the framework of the society we belong to. It is easy to feel contended being a homemaker which by itself is quite challenging. You become complacent if you don't have any motivation to step out and do something.

But I am lucky to have a supportive husband and kids to pull it off.

QUICK SIX

Women empowerment As a conscious citizen I always support the idea of educating the girl child and I believe that within our scope of existence and influence we must be aware of this responsibility and strive to do whatever we can for the society. Somehow the meaning of weaker sex becomes literal in India, women have always taken the backseat and their male counterparts have done the 'man's job'. If woman is given an equal standing the workforce of the country doubles in its strength and potential. A girl can be empowered only through education, which gives her freedom of choice. Since charity begins at home, we should give both male and female child equal status and opportunities.

What are you obsessed with? Obsessed is a strong word but I can be extremely engrossed in work and it gives me a kick!

Cherished moments Like for any mother or a parent, the birth of the children is the most cherished moment for me too! However, several small achievements add up to that list, like organising a successful fashion show or being part of a meaningful public event or helping someone in need at a critical time. I am a go-getter and when I feel very happy and satisfied when my efforts bear fruit. Driving force My Family! My husband and my kids have always been extremely supportive in all my endeavours. In fact, Manzoor is like my backbone. One seldom comes across husbands who are so devoted to their wife’s career. He comes from a renowned family of Hyderabad and they have multiple interests in terms of businesses, they are into manufacturing different products like Tobacco, Textile, Biscuits etc. That he takes time off from that hectic schedule to lend me such a strong support is extremely appreciable. My children have always been my sense of pride and I feel blessed when I see them being appreciative and accommodative. Above all I thank God for every small thing He has granted me! I am a deeply religious person and seek inspiration and support from my prayers.

What do you fear? God! What makes you happy? My family, My friends and My dreams coming true- reasons enough to look forward for tomorrow. What makes you sad? Hypocrisy, shallowness, poverty and death of innocent people. It makes me feel helpless at times! If not fashionista, what would you have been? A chartered accountant. One thing about you that nobody knows Let us look at it from a funny side! My shoe size its 5.5 which is exactly half of Manzoor’s. He wears an 11! ‘laughs’

It is just the beginning. I have miles to go

‘Me’ Time This is a very important facet of today's life. It is imperative that everyone, no matter how busy they are, should carve out some 'me' time. I love travelling. Taking a few days off from the hectic day-to-day life and being on our own is a must for us as a family. I also enjoy a good read and am an avid movie-goer. Music and spa can also be a huge de-stressing tools and they are a part of my 'me' time. Future Plans I am a very positive person and I think we must work hard and leave the rest to God. Anything is achievable if your goals are realistic and if you have the right plan and the attitude to achieve it. I want to explore the idea of taking my passion to different cities of India and God willing I want to be a name to reckon with in my profession. I don't want to be just 'good' I want be 'great' at whatever I do. Shoot by Dhana Vijay Location: Vikram Phadnis Store, Banjara Hills, Hyd Clothes: Vikram Phadnis

EXCERPTS How did your medical journey begin? I am the first one in our family to become a medico. It may be a very common profession now, but during those days it was considered very prestigious. What more a young mind would need to aspire to become one? Tell us about your education, training and specialization? I hail from Srikakulam where I completed my primary education. For my higher studies I came to Visakhapatnam and got through the Andhra Medical College from where I completed MBBS (19741980) and PG (1982-84). It was followed by my senior residencies in various institutions starting from Madras Medical College, an institution in Bangalore and at KEM Hospital, Mumbai. I also had part of my education in Coimbatore. I started my career as an assistant surgeon at Kadapa. In 1994, I went to Australia for three months training in skull base surgeries and later to Germany for Micro Ear Surgery. I kept upgrading myself undergoing training in Otoneuro Surgery, Middle Ear Surgery, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (Fess) and facial plastic surgery, Laser ENT Surgery, Cochlear implant surgery and so on in various hospitals and universities of almost all the countries in Europe and Australia. Medical education, then and now, what difference have you observed? During those days, it was no less than a challenge. I remember I used to study for as long as 19 hours a day. Getting a medical seat and PG admission weren’t easy. The standard of education today is diluted. Needlessly, they are coming up with so many colleges which are of poor grade. Even the students are not up to the mark. What are your observations about the medical services in India and abroad? If we compare Andhra Pradesh with Germany, AP has a population

of four crores, whereas Germany has eight crores. The latter has developed public or government hospitals of high standards, primed with equipment and facilities of latest technologies and finest quality. There is a vast discrepancy even in the commitment of professionals. The private hospitals are very less in numbers. That’s why they are standing as number one in the world. In Europe, even the university clinics, belonging to public sectors are well equipped. In our country, while the government hospitals are limping, the private ones have their set of disadvantages. Most of the doctors lack commitment, while their counterparts abroad are dedicated to their work and get involved in research, write papers and attend conferences. How do you intend to implement your global experience in our scenario? It will take years for India to reach the present European standard. Most importantly and urgently, we have to work on the ignorance of Indians over health insurances. We can also be immensely benefitted by the expertise of overseas specialists. I am trying to rope in at least some of them as I am attached to a lot of associations in India, the latest being the Indian society of Otology. The idea is to have them as visiting faculty or surgeon in medical institutions. What are the changes you have brought in Visakhapatnam? There is nothing much to write home about medical facility in the city. Open surgery was the trend. I pioneered the process of endoscopic skull, ear and nose surgery in the city. Keyhole surgery is cost effective and the results are amazing. The future of medical industry lies upon endoscopic and robotic surgeries. What are your future plans? I have written more than 15 books and 100 papers. I have represented India as an external faculty in many global universities and visited numerous international conferences. This vast knowledge should be put to use.

I want the city to have a facility that imparts medical knowledge of high standards. I would like to conduct a few conferences and courses too. I nurse a dream to provide world class healthcare in the city. Our hospital, Suraksha, is the first step towards it. It has every possible kind of latest medical amenities and facilities. As I wish to serve the poor, I am requesting the government to appoint me as a visiting surgeon in its hospitals and I would render my services free. This gives me an additional advantage of teaching the students. ON THE SON RISE Though your both sons are in medical profession, Raghu established himself as an entrepreneur too, what’s your take on it? Even before, he entered the medical college I took him to France, Germany and Brazil, where he was exposed to the latest developments of this industry. He chose this profession. As a doctor, his abilities are well proven. Adding on to it is his business knowhow which takes him one step ahead. What is your advice to him? I always encourage him to follow his dreams. I think he is a very efficient doctor and he can do wonders. He is extremely hard working and I advise him keep up that spirit. Why him? I advise all the young medicos to be enduring and maintain a healthy relationship with their patients. Instead of the usual practice of treating nearly 100 patients at one go, they should go for more detailed study of patients to arrive at a proper diagnosis.

Healthcare- was it a choice, coincidence or compulsion? My father’s passion for his profession was the driving force for me and my elder brother, who is also an ENT surgeon. I thought it would be more complete if I chose a field which relates to theirs. I obtained my medical degree from Meenakshi College with maxillofacial surgery as specialization. In PG I was trained in head and neck Oncology in various institutes of India and abroad. I was trained in cleft and craniofacial deformities from a unit of CCI (Child Cleft International), Switzerland. I had an option of MD in maxillofacial surgery in Maryland, US, but chose to come back to Vizag. Being in the same industry, comparisons are inevitable, how do you deal with them? Everyone has his exclusivity. While my father is more focused on academics and clinical part, I look after the business aspect by building up hospital. Looking after the administration of a medical facility is highly demanding too. My father never opened any nursing home or hospital despite his vast experience. But I am handling both. Like him, I also have travelled far and wide all over globe and worked with renowned pioneers like Dr. Paul C. Salins, Dr. Moni Abraham Kuriakose , Dr. F. E. Offeciers and Dr. Christian Dubreuil. What makes you stand out in the crowd? In Vizag, there are around a dozen of Maxillo Facial Surgeons. Most of them are into conventional way of treatment. Nobody is actively doing Craniofacial. Even rhinoplasty and otoplasty are also done in traditional way. The techniques and technologies I adopt are different from them. I operate head and neck trauma surgeries in volumes. In a month I conduct around six to seven cosmetic rhinoplasty. I have pioneered in maxillofacial surgery in rhinoplasty in Visakhapatnam. I have good command on Orthognathic surgeries. I am also into facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. I have extensive skills in managing head and neck cancer, including tumors of the skull base and thyroid. How do you manage cost? Quality and pricing always run on parallel lines. You can get into cost cutting mode only if you hit volumes.

For example, if you have a 1,000bedded hospital with a daily flow of 1,000 patients, it is possible to reduce the cost. Otherwise, it is very difficult. Government support is also vital. Any competition? If you are competent you neither have competition nor any active competitor. Moreover, when there is a scarcity of 50,000 doctors in the market, where does the question of competition arise? How does the father-son team work? When it is about surgeries and academics, I look up to him for guidance. Three to four years is a pretty short period to reach where I am today. A major share of the credit for this goes to him as he honed my medical expertise. He gave me the exposure to the global healthcare industry. But in the arena of entrepreneurship, I had no guide. I explored it on my own and won the game. Being an old-timer, he has his own ideas and ideologies. Even after three decades of practice, his consultation fee is only Rs.200. I feel he is underpaid, considering his expertise! But, we still work as a team, sorting out issues that spring from the difference of opinions. Are you indicating that money is your priority? I am not money-minded. I am a businessman and want to reach the break-even. Whatever I earn is being spent on my hospital and to equip it with the latest technologies. Had I been materialistic, I would have got the conventional equipment and saved a lot of money. Bringing the quality and maintaining the showthe catch lies there. What are the future plans? I want to open an excellent head and neck specialty center in Visakhapatnam. With the base here I want to develop a global chain. Apollo is my target competitor and I am sure I will outsmart it in next 15 to 20 years. I feel cash-basedpatient is always a hassle whereas the insurance-based-practice gives freedom to the doctor. We are working on the guidelines. Good news is that a lot of American and Australian Insurance companies are showing interest in Vizag health market. This might change the scenario drastically. If not medicine, what would have been your profession?

Police Service (IPS). What would people be surprised to know about you? I was in politics as a student union leader and was working for TDP. I would have been a politician, but certainly a polished one. You can bring about a lot of good change in the society, if you are a sensible political leader. I might give it a serious try 10-15 years later. I am a good cook and expert in non-vegetarian cuisine. Music also interests me and when time permits I would like to learn violin and piano. What are the things you are passionate about? Cricket and I was the captain of my university cricket team. I am also enthusiastic about modernizing things and systems and Suraksha is a glaring example of it. Leisure is for? For partying hard, my hotspot in Vizag is Four Points By Sheraton and Novotel in Hyderabad. Brazil, has always been my favourite when it is about partying abroad. I have a fancy for cars and love to go on fast-long-drives. PREFERENCES Color - Black Attire - Casuals and I am brand conscious Accessories - I am a watch freak and have all brands like Morellato, Rado, Tag, Motogp etc. Food - Continental, Italian and authentic Chinese Movie - Angels and Demons Actor - Brad Pitt (English), Mahesh Babu(Telugu) Actress - Angelina Jolie Holiday - As I keep touring, my home is best place

DOC WITH A BIG HEART I

n a short span of his career, he established himself as a leading specialist in interventional cardiology and a visionary. Born in a humble family, he struggled his way up to become a cardiologist by dint of his hard work and dedication. His struggle seems to have only strengthened him further to meet ever growing challenges. His journey to success is definitely an inspiration for many. In conversation with P. Swarnalata is the simple, unassuming and gentle cardiologist Dr. Anil Krishna, the brain behind the world class hospital ‘Simhapuri’ in Nellore and the heart institute ‘Sahrudaya,’ in Hyderabad.

red | august 2014 | 102

Excerpts Tell us about your early life I was born in a small village called Atmakur in Nellore district. When I was a kid, there were not many schools in our village except for the small Telugu medium school. My mother Mrs.Padmaja had no formal education and my father Mr.G. Hanuman Reddy, a graduate, has been an agriculturist. My parents, who wanted me to pursue education in real earnest, sent me to my uncle’s place to do my basic primary schooling. Since the school was limited to only upto 4th standard, I moved to Chennai to complete my schooling. Then I was back to Nellore to do my intermediate. After obtaining my MBBS degree from medical college,Tumkur in Karnataka, I joined a corporate hospital in Nellore and within a month I realized that I should go for a specialization and chose to pursue cardiology. Did you go for medical studies by choice or chance? I was an above average student in school, but was very hard working. However that did not deter me from dreaming big. I nursed an enduring desire to be a medical doctor. My parents too, wanted me to do the same. So, it was like an interest that we all shared. Initially, my aim was to complete my studies, go back to my native place and start a small dispensary in the village. That was all.

When and how did your association with Sunshine Hospitals start? As the Nellore hospital was getting ready, I joined Kamineni Wockhardt for a short span and during that time I met Dr. Gurava Reddy of Sunshine Hospitals through some friends. Dr. Gurava Reddy who is an orthopaedician wanted to convert the once orthopaedic hospital Sunshine into a multi-specialty hospital. The best way to convert it was to start a cardiac centre. So I, along with Dr. Sarath, set up the cardiac unit. Initially, people were a bit skeptical about what we were doing. But our team, sparing no efforts, could develop the cardiac centre as one of its kind supported by the best equipment and the best doctors. Considering the speed at which heart diseases are spreading in India, we thought we should have a “Heart Institute,” which would be an exclusive centre to deal with heart cases. Dr. Gurava Reddy supported this concept. I along with two other doctor friends floated a separate company that started “Sahrudaya,” in association with Sunshine. That’s how the association with Sunshine changed my career. What were the hurdles you faced in creating these facilities? Initially people did not trust us as we were a bunch of young practitioners setting out with big plans. We knew the strength of our team and were confident about what we were doing. Most importantly,

What made you start a hospital in Nellore? During my childhood, I saw that there was no good health facility in and around Nellore. So people in emergency or for that matter even for any severe health issue had to rush to Hyderabad or Chennai. There were many cases in which the patient died before reaching the hospital. My father, who suffered a massive heart attack, had to be rushed to a hospital. Thankfully, by then there was an Apollo hospital set up in Nellore and we could handle the emergency. That was when I decided that there should be a good hospital that would cater to all kinds of situations. A few of my friends who were practising in Nellore suggested that I should build a hospital in Nellore. It is also relevant to mention here that my father-in-law too always encouraged me to go for something that would be useful to people. He always said, “I have seen money. But the kind of satisfaction one gets in creating a facility for people cannot be bought with money.” Though I was not sure whether I would be able to move to Nellore, considering my liking for Hyderabad, I joined a group as a partner and ‘Simhapuri’ was conceptualized. It took us nearly three years and Rs.100 cr to build this hospital that today boasts of the best equipment and competent doctors who could deal with any medical issue. The hospital has started operating from this March and I can very proudly claim that it is the best corporate hospital in Nellore. I have always believed that a good infrastructure would attract good consultants. This ultimately leads to good care of the patients. The very fact that we spent a whopping Rs.100 cr itself indicates that we have not compromised on the quality.

What makes your hospital different? Sad but true. The healthcare industry these days, has gone for a total makeover and many consider hospital a money-making tool. However, we have set up the cardiac centre with a sole objective of giving the right treatment at the right time. There is a very healthy environment in our hospitals. When a patient walks in, we do what is necessary for him and never bombard him with unnecessary tests. Before taking a decision on a surgery or procedure, we take a second opinion and arrive at the right course of action. We always have two cardiologists performing surgery, under the vigilant eye of a third expert who comes up with suggestions if need be. Besides treating the patient you need to handle his psychology too. Your take (Laughs) Very true. In general practice we come across about 20-30 patients and most of them don’t have a problem. With heart diseases becoming prevalent, people often relate every symptom to heart problem. Many a time they are wrong yet there are times when they are right. In such situations, we have to first calm the patient and make them believe that it may not be a heart problem at all. To do so, the doctor should spend some time with the patient talking to him/her and understand the details of the symptom before suggesting next course of action. This is imperative because health problems cannot be generalized. The same health problem may throw up

different symptoms in different people. Therefore, I totally believe that a doctor should clear the patient’s doubts besides curing his disease. That is where the patient psychology plays a huge part. In a highly competitive scenario, how does one find a good doctor? There are many good doctors. The problem is when someone comes across a rather unfriendly doctor, people generalize saying that they are no good doctors. The problem these days is doctors are extremely busy and therefore, are not in a position to give much time to patients. However, instead of complaining, I would say people should look out for doctors who do such detailing. That’s it. How would you define cardiology as a profession? It is the most gratifying of all the medical streams. You sometimes see people coming to you at the last stage. You treat them and see them alive and active for the next 10-15 years. That is the beauty of cardiology. In India, the highest mortality is due to heart disease. If you treat them at the right time, you can give them a new lease of life. This is not always possible with other treatments like kidney ailments or cancer where you can see that the patient is not the same after the treatment. What runs in your mind when you come across patients who cannot be cured? Being a doctor is challenging physically as well as mentally. People do consider this profession divine and powerful. But when we come across patients who cannot be cured or saved, we are filled with a sense of helplessness. It’s not always possible to save all patients or restore their health. When we are treating a patient, we get emotionally involved with his/her health. Sometimes when we cannot save a patient, we are haunted by a question - “Was there any other way we could have saved the patient.” Thus, there is always a conflict between the doctor and the emotional self. But at the end of the day, it is a part and parcel of our profession. What has been your driving force? For any doctor, studying his cases after the treatment is very important. When you come across a patient and do a procedure, depending upon the results, the doctor should do an analysis so that when a similar case comes in the future, he is in a position to address it in a much better and effective way. Without this analysis, a doctor is not worth his profession. A successful practice or managing hospitalswhat gives you a high? Both. The smile I see on my patient’s face when he is cured, gives me a high. Also, when I see our vision turned into reality serving its purpose, it gives a sense of fulfillment. Priority in my life has always been my profession.

Would you like to share an incident that you would never forget? I am in a profession wherein I come across many good and bad incidents that remain etched in mind. However, I recall one incident. One day, after I dropped my kids in the school, I received a call from Dr.Gurava Reddy’s wife saying that Dr.Gurava Reddy was having heaviness in the chest. I rushed directly from the school and by the time I reached the hospital, the necessary checkups were done. All the reports came normal and he got back to work. He had a procedure lined up. Though the reports were normal, somewhere my gut feeling said that the issue was much more serious. He went to do his procedure and as it progressed, he was again going down. As soon as he finished his procedure, I told my team that we had to get an angiogram done for him because I felt it was a severe cardiac issue. We got it done and you won’t believe we diagnosed a severe 99% freshly formed blocks. We immediately got an angioplasty done and he is fit and fine. That day, it was a moment of mixed feelings. I was happy that my knowledge came in use at the right time and could cure the doctor who has been a very important person in building my career. In addition, as a doctor it is a great feeling when the right care is given at the right time and you see the patient recover. How do you manage to balance your personal and professional life? (with a broad smile) Because of Sirisha, I never had to think how I would balance my personal and professional life. Right from managing our house, to the studies of the kids and managing me as well once I am back home, she handles everything with complete ease. She understands the seriousness of my profession and is always there with me. This allows me to focus on my profession. How do you unwind yourself? I don’t feel that I am working and need ways and means to relax. I am constantly thinking about what more can be done for the hospital and what more is there for me to learn as a professional. I enjoy my profession fully and feel completely blessed to be doing what I love the most. What is your biggest wish? I wish to make medical care available across the country. I mean there should be at least life saving centers at districts and cities so that any emergency in the surrounding village can be handled.

“The smile I see on my patient’s face when he is cured, gives me a high”

What has been your biggest fear? Being a cardiologist is very gratifying but running hospitals is a bit tough. With so many things happening on the hospital’s strategic management, I have a fear whether I would be able to continue my practice as a cardiologist. I keep asking myself and my friends say that’s the least I should do and focus on the vision which is dedicated at creating a healthy tomorrow. However, I somehow want to balance both. Thankfully with my team’s support I think I can balance both. What are your future plans? To be frank there are many. But top on the priority list is setting up Madhapur hospital by this yearend. I also plan hospitals in Chennai and Bangalore some time next year.

What would be your advice to aspiring doctors? I am not a big person to advise. I observe that most of them (except a few) are not serious about their profession. So, I tell them, “Whatever you do should be done with absolute seriousness and love. Considering, the current education system, many students seem to choose a profession or a stream because it is lucrative. So, I advise students to choose this profession only if they are interested and have the passion to pursue it. They should have a goal and strive to reach it so that they don’t regret their actions later. FAVORITES Brand: I don’t believe in brands. I just pick what I like Car: BMW (I currently use BMW 525) Pastime: I don’t get much time, but whenever I get time, I spend it with my family Movie: I am no movie-watcher. I have a home theatre but it has not been used for the last 6 months. Holiday destination: Paris FAMILY CORNER WIFE WITH NO DEMANDS: ANIL It’s been 7 years now and I have to say Sirisha is the best thing that happened to me. It was a traditional arranged marriage. She is a beautiful wife and holds my family together with love and affection. She is a BTech graduate, but after marriage she chose to be a homemaker. Without her support, I don’t think I would be able to focus on my practice and other endeavors. She is not at all a demanding. If you ask me to describe my family, I have only these few words to say. Sirisha is lovely, Abhinav charming and Hasini beautiful. A WONDERFUL JOURNEY: SIRISHA It has been a wonderful journey of seven years. I recently lost my father but my husband’s warmth and affection acted as a balm on the hurt. He cares for me like a brother, protects me like a father and loves me to the core as a husband. For me, he is a complete man. Because of his profession, he gets very less time for himself. But, whenever he gets time, he spends every moment with us. He is very particular about dropping the kids at the school. The only thing I don’t like about him is, he talks a lot over the phone while he eats. Because throughout the day, he doesn’t get time to eat properly, I wish he at least gets a decent dinner. That’s something I want him to change.

THE NEWPORT MAN By V. Sarada

I

n a country where things move only with a political prod or nod, for a bureaucrat to be in the good books of the Chief Ministers of divergent parties and ideologies is unimaginable. But that is what Mr.M.T.Krishna Babu, the new Chairman of Visakha Port Trust (VPT), has achieved in his nearly two decade-long career. Chandrababu had based his Shramadanam drive on the Narsapur module, which Krishna Babu had conceptualised and executed. While YSR trusted him with his precious Kadapa for three years, Kiran Kumar Reddy entrusted him with the humongous task of running Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. All the barriers seem to sink when it comes to applauding hard work, dedication and competence. Krishna Babu, an icon of positive energy, got down to business right from the day one, with a resolve to firmly anchor the swaying VPT. Mr. Krishna Babu may touch innumerable topics, but his focus stays berthed at VPT, his present passion.

Shoot by Dhana Vijay

E X C E R P T S Welcome to Vizag, your take on the city. My first tryst with the city was from 2000 to 2003. Among all the places I served, Vizag is the most family-friendly and breathtakingly beautiful city. It is an uncomplicated place with reasonable and nonaggressive dwellers who respect administration. Hence our job becomes easy. Moreover, in my last stint as a Joint Collector, I could develop the areas under my purview, with the Collectors, Mr.J.V.S. Prasad and Mr. Sunil Sharma, giving me a total free hand. They left even crucial matters like Konatala’s aggressive protest on the Raiwada water issue in my hands, considering me ‘the right man on the job.’ At the same time, I didn’t have the killing responsibility of the top man. So life is stress-free. Stress-free or laidback? Did it take away the fizz out of your work? Laidback has many connotations. You may be surprised to know that Hyderabad is much more laidback, steeped in the Nawabi culture. Anyway, for a person who seeks work, there is no dearth of it. One endeavour that gave me immense satisfaction was reclaiming and protection of the government land. Many genuine owners, who were not much educated and oblivious to their own rights, had foregone their land to fake claimants. I reconstructed the missing Revenue Settlement Register, fishing out data from various sources, including the archives in Hyderabad. The comprehensive and computerised information was given to MROs, banks and other departments concerned and we could arrest the mischievous transactions to a great extent. I could successfully take up many projects like developing Thotlakonda, Jatara and the radar centre on Kailasagiri. Yet another notable accomplishment was the acquisition of 12,000 acres for the Atchutapuram SEZ. A bureaucrat can effectively function here as there is not much of political interference.

potential, with a huge depository of land suitable for development. The much-promised PCPIR and Vizag -Chennai corridor, excise and income tax concessions will augur well for the region. The city can turn into an industrial and commercial capital, if only we improve the infrastructure. We should strive for better connectivity by laying bypass and radial roads. Tunnel roads through the fringing hills will make the city more accessible. Convention centres that serve as business platforms are the need of the hour. Port and airport, the most important ingredients for development, are already in place. Our CM has the hands-on experience in building a Hi-tech city. So, developing Vizag as a role model is not at all difficult. Tell us about your early life. My father Mr.Ramabrahmam has been a farmer and my mother Mrs.Sarojini a housewife. Hailing from Tippanagunta village in Krishna district, I went to ZPH School in Arugolanu. I studied Intermediate in Sir CRR College, Eluru and B.Tech in JNTU, Kakinada. I appeared for the IAS exams while serving in NTPC and stood first in the state and 23rd at the national level. What made you change the track? Well, as a mechanical engineer, my job was to fill in those mandatory hours at NTPC, taking a steady climb up the ladder. I felt stifled being restricted only to the compound of the plant with no interaction with people. The bureaucrat’s job with its tremendous impact on the development of society was a lure I could not resist.

How do you rate the city’s progress? Vizag hasn’t developed proportional to its potential. In 2000, we envisaged a beach corridor up to Bhimili. I see no progress on this front except for the widening of road at a few stretches. Nor do I see any movement in the 4-lane bypass between Anandapuram and Anakapalli. Vizag and Hyderabad, compare the progress. The government invested huge amounts of money in Hyderabad to showcase it as a world class city and developed it with a mindboggling speed. During my tenure itself we completed four flyovers, 12 major link roads, besides designing Krishna Phase -3 and Godavari Pumping schemes. When it comes to Vizag, one doesn’t see so much happening. While Hyderabad enjoys the inflow of investments from surrounding rich districts, Vizag has no such luck with its weak hinterland and economically backward Odisha and Chhattisgarh as neighbours. How do you see the future? For better or worse, the state is divided. In the residual Andhra Pradesh, Visakhapatnam is one city with a great

Tell us about your experience with the ‘dreaded’ Kadapa. That is a misconception because not all villages are that way. There are only 20 of them that script Rakta Charitra. Locals including YSR used to respect me. Once YSR was assured that you were just and objective he would give you cent percent freedom. All he wanted was a clean and efficient administration. He was not unduly inhibited about developing his own constituency. Hence there was a free flow of funds that were utilised to develop industry, education, health and irrigation in the district. What are your easiest and toughest of assignments? Small and easy-to-handle Guntur gave me a lot of satisfaction. Indubitably, the most challenging was the GHMC Commissioner’s post for I was dealing with 40,000 employees, 150 corporators, 24 MLAs and 17 MPs. Every minister has some interest or the other in the city. However, I must admit my Seemandhra tag did not hurt me during the agitation.

The bureaucrat’s job with its tremendous impact on the development of society was a lure I could not resist

What are your memorable moments? That was my first assignment as the sub-collector in Narsapur. The plight of the farmers, who were struggling to desilt the water channels, spurred me to evolve a novel method. I could motivate them to be on their own and 20 villages started independently managing the water channels. Unexpectedly I got a cryptic message from Hyderabad saying, “Nuvvu edo chestunnavuta, CM choostarata” (We heard you are doing something and the CM wants to look at it). Next morning the then CM, Chandrababu, came to study the modus operandi. He was so taken in by the concept that he aggressively launched Shramadanam in the same lines. What are the social welfare activities you are involved in? We are developing our village as a model one, with special focus on education and health. We have spent nearly Rs.80 lakh to develop our school. I built three classrooms in the memory of my late sister. Later, many people came forward and built a classroom each. The school has the state-of-the art infrastructure and even computers. I raised funds setting up an alumni association. The interest accrued goes to help the students of weaker sections realise their dreams. Then I turned my attention to sanitation which is imperative for good health and set up an RO plant to supply clean water to locals. Mrs.Galla Aruna Kumari, the then minister, was impressed by our work and released funds from her trust for ISL project. To lay the CC roads, I raised funds from the Ramanaidu Charitable Trust.

How do you deal with politicians? Politicians study us thoroughly before approaching us and know with whom they are dealing. On our part we should not tickle their ego, being abrasive and insulting. Of course, it is a bit tricky because we can’t rub anyone on the wrong side and at the same time we cannot flout rules to appease anyone. I can ascertain that at least five out of ten issues that a politician brings to you are straightforward. On the ones that go against the book, we have to discreetly get the point across to him without ruffling his feathers. What is your success mantra? Success doesn’t come easy. My day starts at 7.30 am and goes on till 10.00 pm. I do my homework and also interact with the local people before setting my targets, which many times I take up on my volition. Time and again I review my own progress and performance. Luckily I could achieve all my targets till now. I may not be able to solve all the problems but give a patient hearing to people who come with them. By this at least they know that I took cognisance of the issue. People from the lowest rung to the top remember me and recognise my efforts. Wherever I go they refer to me as “Ma Collector garu.” That is very gratifying.

PORTRAYAL

QUICK BITES Moment of happiness Spending time with family Moments of sadness When I face uncalled for comments. Any regrets None The change you want in you I wish I were less sensitive and don’t take everything seriously. Moments that flatter you When people in some remote corners recognise me. FAVOURITES Pastime Working out at gym; spending time at my village and with friends and cooking. Of course, now I cannot do it because my cooks get all agitated if I enter their domain. Why did you choose VPT? The satisfaction of working for betterment of the home state is immeasurable. This deputation gives me solid five years, long enough to show results. My objective is to enhance VPT’s the present 80 million tonnes capacity to 120 million tonnes and place it among the top three ports in the country. Issues on hand Our port handles coal and iron ore which forms 50% of our cargo. Hence pollution is a inevitable. My challenge begins at home in motivating the staff to take environment and dustsuppression as the top most priority. We should go for mechanised handling, berth improvement and container traffic and improve railway connection for quick evacuation. It is wise to improve the present facility instead of going for expansion. Men and Machines The modern mechanised port certainly has an edge over an old port that harbours a huge workforce. We cannot ignore our men and of course we need machines for better results. VPT will be shortly giving iron ore handling task to ESSAR, under PPP mode. This will render a few hundred men redundant and we have to see them off with lucrative packages. On the flipside, this can be viewed as the government’s huge CSR exercise as nearly one lakh people survive on VPT. Dealing with Unions One learns the ropes with experience, I guess. Generally unions are forearmed with all the information about us. I stand for any just cause and strive for amicable settlement. If it is not so, I can be equally querulous. I give them a clear message– “If there is a genuine grievance, I am all cooperation and if not, come what may, I would neither heed nor do I bow to any pressure.”

“I did get an opportunity to work in Anantapur and even as I was dithering over the decision, my mother asked me- ‘Your husband working in Ramagundam, you in Anantapur, we in Bangalore and your in-laws in Krishna District- does it make any sense?’ After that neither I thought of a career nor do I regret not pursuing one. I enjoyed every bit of raising the children. With both of them grown independent, now I turn my attention to my husband .” “He may appear very tough to an outsider, but he is extremely soft loving and caring. We never locked horns on any issue till now and it has been a smooth sail,” says a contended Padma JYOTHI SWARUP, SON “We were more under our mother’s rule. ‘Amma scolded me,’ used to be the general complaint we used to take to our father,” says Jyothi Swarup, 3rd year student of IIT, Kharagpur. “On his own he may not plan any outing. But if we make a programme, he makes time for it. Maybe that he needs a bit of persuasion. We have no apprehensions about his being posted anywhere because we know he is loved and respected wherever he goes.” RAMYA, DAUGHTER

O FAMILY C

Success Begins at Home My wife is my greatest asset. Though she is highly qualified and got an opportunity to work in a bank, she spurned it to be with the children. The success of a man is measured by the family he raises, they say. But I am successful in this area because she took the onus of bringing up the children with cent percent devotion. What is heartening is that my power did not go to their heads. They are simple children with high values. My son did show a little interest in civil services. But I advised him to explore the other options before taking a final decision. I wanted my daughter to go for engineering and after noting her interest in children, I offered to set up a school for her. Anyway, she opted for medicine. PADMA VALLI, WIFE The only question Mr. Krishna Babu asked me was about my education in the one and only brief rendezvous I had with him before the marriage, recalls Mrs.Padma Valli, a Post-Graduate in Commerce and a gold medallist in graduation. “That itself speaks for his obsession with academcs. We had no time to go on honeymoon for he was preparing for civils. It may be hard to believe but he could get to see both the children three months after they were born, such was his preoccupation,” says Mrs. Padma, but without remorse. red | august 2014 | 116

“Our father’s frequent transfers did not much bother us. In fact it added more dimensions to our character,” says a charming Ramya , who is studying 2nd year in Apollo Medical College, Hyderabad. “Dad is always ready to give us whatever we ask and most of the time even before our asking. We are very proud of him. His position never came in the way of our ties with others or our lives. May be in district postings we feel a bit isolated. Yet by and large we have a very normal life.” SAROJINI, MOTHER “I must have certainly done some benevolent deeds to beget a son like Krishna. He reached the top only through his self-effort and made us all proud. Krishna never needed any tuitions or special classes to excel in his exams. As his father and I are not formally educated, he had no guidance on that front. He was a bit naughty but always well-behaved. He used to help me in the chores like cooking and fetching water. Though he was the only child, he was not spoiled. In Padma he got the right partner and we a daughter,” RAMABRAHMAM, FATHER “Look at this ramp, this is what my son got specially made for me. I cannot take even a short flight of steps because of my back pain,” says Mr. Ramabrahmam, pointing out that nothing escapes his son’s caring eye and he goes all out to keep people in comfort. Stating that his only son climbed the ladder of success purely on his steam despite hailing from a village, the proud father recalls, “He was all through a merit student and an obedient son.”

With his vast knowledge about cardiac health, he is educating on Coronary Heart Disease (CHD).

Dr.Afroz Farooqi Mch, DNB, FIACS,

What is CHD? Coronary Artery or Heart Disease is on a rapid rise and it won’t be wrong to call it an epidemic today. The main reasons behind this condition are medical ailments like diabetes, high BP and hypertension and wrong food habits. Risk of developing coronary heart disease in smokers is 2-4 times higher than that of nonsmokers. Those who smoke a pack of cigarettes a day have more than twice the threat of heart attack than people who’ve never smoked. Thus, it is a powerful independent risk factor for sudden cardiac death in patients with coronary heart disease. Equally responsible is alcohol addiction. Persons having high LDL cholesterol and low HDL cholesterol are vulnerable to CAD. Family history or heredity, obesity and women post-menopausal are also few of the causes behind it. I treat the patients suffering from this condition and try to reach to different cities of Andhra Pradesh like Vizag, Vijayawada and Guntur. What are the symptoms? There is suffocation and breathlessness with simple activities including climbing or getting down the stairs rapidly. The most common symptom of coronary artery disease is Angina. It isn't exactly a disease. It is a warning sign of an underlying heart problem. CHD is the most regular cardiac ailment in adults. It mainly caused if a waxy substance called plaque builds up on the inner walls of coronary arteries. These arteries carry oxygen-rich blood to the heart. Plaque narrows and stiffens the coronary arteries. This reduces the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscles, causing chest pain. Plaque buildup also makes it more likely that blood clots will form in the arteries. Blood clots can partially or completely block blood flow, which can cause a heart attack. What are the effects? It can lead to heart failure. It happens due to the decreased blood that lets the heart to go without oxygen and nutrients for frequent periods or the damage sustained during a heart attack. Each instance causes the heart to fail because it is too weak to pump sufficient amounts of blood to the body. How to detect it? If one experiences it, test is advisable to get the confirmation. TMT Test reveals the presence of CHD. If the

result is positive, the patient is advised to undergo Coronary Angiography. Man or Woman, who is prone to this condition? Males are more prone to this condition. However, it is surprising to observe that nowadays more number of women is coming forward for CHD treatment. The reason might be the awareness created by the Government (Aarogyasri Scheme). Investigations and Treatment Modalities Once patient is diagnosed as unstable angina or positive TMT test or repeated arrhythmias (heart rhythm disorder), he/she should go through angiography. If angiography reveals single, double or multi-vessel disease – depending on the type of lesion, patient’s profile, his/her acceptability regarding the type of treatment whether angioplasty stenting or bypass surgery experience, the decision is taken. The studies suggest that the result of bypass surgery and angioplasty, PCI is comparable even in single vessel disease; while overall better and fewer events are seen in patients who underwent bypass surgery. The survival rate post bypass surgery is quite encouraging. Earlier, there was a fear and apprehension regarding the bypass surgery but today it is becoming very common and even the success record is quite high. The ABCDE approach for Prevention If one follows the ABCDE approach it will help in prevention of CHD. Get an Assessment of risk through the Antiplatelet Therapy and Anti Coagulant. Keep a check on B.P. Your Cholesterol level should be under control and stay off smoking. Manage your weight with the correct diet and prevent and treat diabetes. Make physical Exercise a part of your daily life. Recommendations for CHD reduction Try to balance caloric intake and physical activity to achieve a healthy body weight. Go for diet rich in vegetable, fruits, wholegrain, high fibre. Fresh fish should be a part of your meal at least twice a week. Limit sugar intake (male 100 k. calories and women150 k. calories), salty food, and saturated fat. Quit smoking and be in smoke-free environment.

Strategies at National Level Considering the multi-factorial nature of CHD and social and economical heterogeneity, no single solution is applicable to all. Appropriate regional strategies depend on a number of factors including regions’ stage in the epidemiological transition. Complimentary strategies can reduce morbidity and mortality from CHD. There should be wide preventive interventions through national campaigns against cigarette smoking. Next approach involves identifying the high risk sub groups of the population who stand to benefit the most from specific low cost prevention interventions. This involves screening and targeting preventive interventions such as HTN and high cholesterol 3rd and secondary preventative measures for those with clinically manifest disease. Western guidelines should be modified, taking into account the public health and health care infrastructure and economic realities. The government should initiate major public health initiatives aimed at lifestyle factors including lowering rate of the smoking and drinking, modifying diet and increasing physical activity. Major public health priorities should also include the detection and control of hypertension and high cholesterol, both of them are highly cost effective. Targeting higher risk individuals for higher cost preventive strategies such as pharmacological lowering of cholesterol and BP will initially need to be confined to areas such as urban centers. Where the burden is high and necessary lab based health care infrastructure is available, careful attention must be paid to the transfer of lower cost technology, keeping in mind the considerably lower annual health care expenditure. Even interventions such as widespread and appropriate use of aspirin and the beta-blocker during acute myocardial infarction is an example of an extremely cost effective life saving therapy. It should be implemented universally before extensive resources are directed at the higher cost intervention such as angioplasty. Personal issues must also be addressed given the general shortage of health care professionals. The allocation of the resources to lower cost strategies are likely to be more effective than dictating resources to high cost management of CHD in long run.

GO BACK TO GURUKUL By Ranita Ray

GITAM University has always been a pioneer in bringing such changes. It is the first one to introduce one-of-its-kind programme beyond the classrooms. Celebrating the sixth year of success, the Out Bound Training (OBT) Programme– Gurukool 2014 was held. Designed by GITAM Institute of Management (GIM) for the newly admitted BBA, BBM and MBA students, it perfectly establishes a symbiotic relation between education and fun. Three and a half day away from the university, in complete isolation from modern day’s gadgets, technologies; it takes back the students to the olden days of Gurukul culture. Read on to know the firsthand information right from the venue.

red | August 2014 | 134

Background OBT is designed, drawing inspiration from a concept coined by Dr. Kurt Hahn, a philosopher outdoorsman in 1940s. With it GIM gives the students the taste of what the managers experience at the corporate level. However, the performance of every participant is evaluated and taken in the final marks list.

Educating the mind, without educating the heart is no education at all,” said Aristotle. The ‘class-room-teaching’ is often dubbed as mechanical teaching. An educational system isn’t worth a great deal if it teaches young minds how to make a living, but doesn’t teach them how to make a life. The syllabus records vital lessons for the students, who are expected to put them into practice as they enter the market as professionals. But, at the end of the academic year, how much do they remember? Thus, it takes us to the same thought where we had begun, ‘education of mind Vs heart’. In such a scenario, even a tiny initiative in the right direction kindles the flame of interest in students.

How does it work? “The BBA, BBM and MBA freshers are divided into groups of 25 or 30 and are sent in batches. A far away venue is chosen with proper accommodation and only vegetarian food is served. Each batch is accompanied with a GIM faculty. The participants are not allowed to take mobile phones or any other gadgets. They are neither permitted to make calls nor leave during the programme. The idea is to take them away from their regular lives. An unfamiliar set of challenges are thrown at them. The programme works on the principle of flinging a team in adverse settings, to let them chalk out strategies, build trust among one another and successfully meet them,” says Asst. Prof. Sobha, one of the faculties on duty for 2014 programme. Beyond the college’s theoretical training, it gives practical experience where they can learn with fun. How is it planned? We decide what are the subjects or areas need to be covered and look for OBT experts. After a thorough research the best trainers, with extensive experience in corporate training, are outsourced from across the country. This year Mr.Prakash and Mr.Arularasan of Bija Training, Chennai are chosen, shares Asst.Prof. Krishna Kumari, one of the batch faculties. The trainers accordingly design the programmes. Compared to the UG students, the PG ones have advanced programmes with more focus on case studies, method of adoption of corporate culture, mock situation of HR issues, crisis handling, etc. How does it start? “The first two days, the programme starts as early 6.00 am in the morning and runs till 10.00 pm with a few short breaks. It is kickstarted with 2,00 km-jogging, followed by yoga and aerobics. The idea is to inculcate among the students the habit of healthy living,” explains trainer Prakash. As the day progresses we involve them in various activities working on different aspects of their personality. On the final day it lasts from 6.00 am to 5.00pm. What does it aim at? It focuses at the holistic development of the students and prepares them for the real-time experience in the market, much before they take up their jobs. It tries to synchronize the mind, body and soul. It covers a range of subjects- basic ones being grooming, communication and etiquette and vital attributes like teamwork, trust building and leadership. How does it transform? Sobha states, “Students coming from different backgrounds, often come with attitude problem. When they are put on a common platform, it removes any kind of disparity. The activities are just external factors, ultimately, it is the student who has to work on self-development through self-analysis. They can cultivate various skills like public presentation, marketing, strategic planning, optimum utilization of resources etc. Briefing the approach, Prakash says, “I am an expert in Behavioral Training and a certified NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and MBTI practitioner. So along with my co-trainer, we try to help the student to have a clear vision, develop a right attitude, positive thinking and good value system. The conventional method of closed-doors or lecture mode learning restricts the grasping power. Here we try to create conducive atmosphere which changes their mindset. We teach them through experiences not lectures. Books don’t exist in our module. We use mats, blind folds, balls, ropes, balloons as our different tools,” he adds.

How do you train? “This multi-faceted programme trains every student at various levels,” quotes OBT facilitator, Arularasan. He narrates the activities which are conducted and the aspects they are aimed at. The day one has Balloon Tinker which checks who has the leader like ability to shoulder others’ responsibilities. Similarly Balloon Blast teaches them the theory of Survival of the Fittest. Next is a two-hour programme called Four Directions. The first 30 minutes is an interpersonal introduction which allows the participants to get a SWOT analysis of their personalities through the assessment of their coparticipants. Next half hour is a session teaches them how to set goals. The third and the fourth direction enable them to sync with the team and break their inhibition to be a team mate. Mine Field teaches them how to communicate well, cross the communication barriers. Great Ball and Fill the Ocean instill the ability of strategy planning and working on team dynamics. The next day has tasks like Electric Fence that improves their ability of adaptability and flexibility, Egg Drop hones their creativity, sharpens decision making ability and introduces them to four types of thinking and their application. The third day is about CSR activities which involve Tree Plantations and Personality Development sessions they take up in nearby schools. This changes their perception towards society and makes them responsible citizens.

How does it help? The most immediate advantage of OBT is building up interpersonal relationship, trust, and bonding, says Krishna Kumari. “If I teach, you won’t remember, if I show, you forget, but if I involve you, you remember; this is what exactly we do,” adds Arul, stating the effectiveness of OBT. Citing example he says, “We break the mental barrier and task like Fire Walk comes handy here. Most of the participants are scared and apprehensive before doing it. We take a brief pre and post session. As all of them perform it successfully, they not only know how to overcome their fear, but realize how to apply it in adverse situation.” Students’ Corner “It is not the regular way of sitting in class rooms and listening lectures, but a two-way learning where we involve and learn lessons in our own ways. Initially we were a little apprehensive about OBT, our anxiety increased with the no-gadgets and nocalls rule. But with the actual training session we all came out of our shells. Each task taught us a specific experience. While the Bamboo Stick Walk taught us team-work, through the Snake Blind Fold we acquire the quality of trust building and effective communication. The day we came, we hardly knew each other, but at the end of the session we know one another well, the goal-setting session made us familiar with one another’s ambitions. The interaction level has gone up. Even with teachers, we are no more just silent listeners but active participants in new learning. There is a renewed enthusiasm among all of us. I think this zeal we will carry on, not just for three days but for three years or forever, summarizes,” Shruti, BBM first year student.

What happens post-OBT? “Any learning needs brushing up in every short interval,” says Prakash. Gurukul, makes the students aware of their skills and abilities, however a review or follow-up sessions would improve their performance more. That is why we also instruct the faculty and management to ask student to work on case studies, conduct seminars and give presentations. Even frequent JAM sessions too are pretty effective. “I feel, if you are expecting a drastic change and want it to be a permanent one, three-day training is not enough,” opines Arul. What is the importance? Citing a research’s founding Arularasan says, “NASCOM report predicts that by 2020 India will have around 12 lakh unskilled manpower. If we have to negate it, we need to train the future workforce, i.e. the students. What is the market’s response? “Since past two year we are witnessing an excellent growth in the placement. The companies themselves informed us that they had observed a distinct difference in our students compared to their previous batches. There is a visible improvement in their communication and interaction levels. The present lots are way too confident and swift in responding to their queries. They said they will come to us for hiring our pupils,” share Krishna Kumari. What is the future like? “Today the corporate sector prefers students with practical experience than bookish knowledge. GITAM always adopts modern approaches of teaching and training, OBT- Gurukul, has taken it to the next level. This however has also given us encouragement to design some programmes where we can send the students for a practical experience for a semester or trimester. There are also discussions on collaboration with different industries for outbound programmes,” reveals Shobha.
