I hope the change of guards will augur well for the nation and our state which is also going to polls. Coming to the present edition, it has turned out to be a jewellery-lovers’ delight. Old is gold, goes the popular saying. But here it is the case of gold being old and going stronger by the day. Yes, we speak of two very important families that have been dealing with gold and jewellery for more than a century. SRI PRAKASH HOLDS KIDS DAY CELEBRATIONS The Guinness World Record holder Ram Singh Chauhan uncoiled his 14-foot long moustache at Children’s Day celebrations organized by Sri Prakash Vidyaniketan at Port Kalavani Auditorium. Students, parents and special invitees cheered Chauhan unveiling the longest moustache amidst Rajastani folklore to mark ‘Kids Day - 2013’ carnival. The other interesting feature of the event was the Art and Craft exhibition. It showcased many eye-pleasing home decors made of simple items such as coconut shells, newspapers, straws, jute ropes, CDs, cotton rolls and many more. The event ended with a series of cultural performances. Vice Chancellor of Andhra University GSN Raju, noted storyteller Geeta Ramanujam and educationist Sridhar Balan were among others present. Director of the school Ch. Vasu Prakash felicitated Chauhan.

ASHOK LEYLAND’S ‘STILE’ MPV LAUNCHED The Hinduja Group’s flagship company, Ashok Leyland launched the ‘Stile’, a stylish Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) at Lakshmi Motors. The price of the vehicle starts from Rs 7.49 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The 7-seater vehicle has been developed by Ashok Leyland -Nissan Motor Company joint venture and follows the light commercial vehicle Dost as the joint venture’s second offering in the segment. David, DGM, Hyundai, Ch. Srinivas Reddy, CEO and Srivardhan Rithuraj, Regional Manager, Ashok Leyland were present at the launch. BOOK OF SHORT STORIES RELEASED The first edition of ‘The Acorn Book of Short Stories’, comprising 45 stories written by the schoolchildren of Oakridge International School (Hyderabad and Bangalore branches) along with other schools was launched on Children’s Day by People Combine Chairman Naga Prasad Tummala. He said that the concept was to provide an avenue for the children to express themselves. They proved that age did not matter as long as one had the passion to write. In an effort to encourage writing skills among students, the school is organising a short story writing contest on December 15. School Principal Rama Mylavarapu was present at the launch.

MARVELS MADURAI AT GRANDBAY Authentic flavours of Madurai which have an influence of Chettinad and the traditional temple cuisine were served at Dakshin, Welcome Hotel GrandBay. Veteran Chef Pongavanam who mastered this cuisine was specially called to host this Madurai Food Festival along with the Executive Chef T. Suresh Babu of the property. Together they served an array of both vegetarian and non-veg. delicacies during the 10-day culinary fest. Foodies were seen relishing the delicious preparations with that Madurai’s extra punch of spice and chillies.

FORTUNE CAKE MIXING Mounds of dates, raisins, red cherries, cashew nuts, almonds, berries, apricot, walnuts and others dry fruits were mixed in various types of liquor in a container to mark the beginning of the cake mixing ceremony held at Fortune Inn Sree Kanya. The hotel guests and staff poured bottles of wine and rum into the medley of fruits till the latter got fattened. The mixture is stored till a couple of days before Christmas and is used in preparation of a royal rich plum cake. Hotel’s Operation Manager Mitish Verma said, “The ceremony is done days ahead of the season and the preparation makes a lip smacking dessert served with wine custard for Christmas and New Year. Executive Chef Rami Reddy Yerram and his team explained to guests about the tradition of the cake mixing ceremony. Executives and other staff of the hotel were present.

VIZAG AHEAD IN SKATING Visakha District Skaters won the overall championship in the 25th Andhra Pradesh State Artistic Roller Skating Championship-2013 held at Sivaji Park in the second week of November. Over 200 skaters from all over the state participated in the event. The competition was held in different categories of age starting from below 6 years.

AMC CELEBRATES RESONANZ The outgoing students of Andhra Medical College celebrated Resonanz, the annual week-long College Day festival. Professors, principals and students were involved in the festival. Various cultural programmes, games and contests were held to mark the occasion. SILK MARK EXPO IN JAN Following an overwhelming response to the expo held in Vizag earlier, Silk Mark, an initiative of Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles will organise Silk Mark Expo at Swarna Bharathi Indoor Stadium, near Bullaiah College from Jan 3 to 9 next year. It will perfectly coincide with in Makara Sankranti. Several varieties of 100% silk products apart from exclusive traditional and designer silk saris will be on display. Its prime objective is to protect the interests of the consumer, genuine traders and manufacturers. Silk Mark is being promoted by Silk Mark Organisation of India (SMOI).

BREAK CLUB LOGO LAUNCHED Break Club located in CBM Compound launched its logo recently. HALLOWEEN COSTUME DAY Teeny Boppers Play School celebrated its annual Halloween Costume Day along with Diwali at Hawa Mahal. Holding centre stage were little â&#x20AC;&#x153;Teeny Boppersâ&#x20AC;? in splendid theme costumes paired with their parents in coordinated costumes. Parents participated actively in the ramp show in innovative getups ranging from pirates to witches, fairies, angels, butterflies, action heroes etc. The contestants were adjudged by a panel comprising Mrs. Mayank Kumari Deo, Latika Deo, Rana Uppalapati of Helios and Mari Rao. Children and their families were treated to a fun evening culminating in a fireworks show. Hazzel Ice Cream Café, the new outlet that has come up at Road No 10 in Jubilee Hills is the latest joint wherein the entire family can spend time together while savouring a delectable fare. After the immense success of their first outlet in Gachibowli, Hazzel Ice Cream Café has started the second one. “We plan to add three more in a couple of months,” says Sunil Indurti, Head of Operations at Hazzel. Starting from regular Espresso coffee to specialized signature hot coffees like strawberry latte and back forest mocha – the place has different varieties of coffees to choose from. “While the children savour the ice creams, their parents can indulge in pastas and coffees. Offering variety for the family is our plus point,” Sunil pointed out.

Obviously the specialty is ice cream. Hazzel changes its menu according to the season like in summer mango flavours make way into the menu. “Sundaes are our most sought after ice cream. New flavours have been added to our existing variety,” Sunil states. In fact, different sundaes like Cookie Crunch, Chocolate & Cream, and Angoori Gulab Jamun Sundae are exclusively created by Hazzel. It is heard that Jagan has already confirmed a ticket for Tynala on BC quota as the latter belongs to the Velama Community following a ‘recommendation’ from Dharmana Prasada Rao. Interestingly Tynala and Panchakarla who enjoyed a good rapport when they were in Cong, will get into face-to-face battles in the 2014 elections. HARI ON HORNS OF DILEMMA Originally from the Congress, MP Sabbam Hari hogged the limelight when he switched his loyalties to YSRCP. reading on uncharted path while he was in his early twenties, he had not only got the courage but also had a vision to make it big. Thus within five years of joining the shipping industry, he floated his own company that too without the support of a godfather or fat finances. Within three years of starting it, he could reach a turnover of nearly nine crores. At the age of 27, he is one of the youngest producers in the film industry. Though a novice, standing along the veteran players, he dared to produce a movie with a team comprising debuting actor, actress and even the director and established that he is an out-and-out risk taker. His first movie Prema Geema Jantanai (PGJ) is about to hit the screen. The razzle-dazzle of the silver screen seems to have left him untouched and failed to give him airs. It is interesting to feature unassuming Maddala Bhaskar and learn about his realities and dreams.

BACKGROUND Bhaskar hails from a middle class family and his life wasn’t that rosy in the childhood. His grandfather, the late Mr. M Appa Rao, was an employee with Visakha Dairy. With his limited resources, it wasn’t feasible for his grandfather to offer a luxurious life to his five children. However, there was no dearth of love and bonding in the family and he inculcated high values in his children. The family responsibility then was passed to Bhaskar’s father Mr. MN Rao who was an employee with Customs Department. Education and principles were what he inherited as his legacy, which he passed to his three kids. Bhaskar, being the eldest born, naturally took over the reins. Soon after his graduation, he joined Guru Shipping as a management trainee. After working for a year, he moved to Ocean India. Working with the company as the Assistant Manager for a couple of years, young Bhaskar was besought with the ambition of floating his own shipping company and Induz Trading and Logistics came into existence. Coming from humble beginnings Bhaskar is well aware of the struggles and strife of people who want to make it big in life. He is also aware of the scanty opportunities people have. Out of the 18 employees of his enterprise, he has chosen eight underprivileged to groom them further and funds their training in spoken English and computer skills. DIVERSION “Movie happened by chance,” says Bhaskar. It was during one of those casual chats he was having with the friends that the idea of film-making popped up. However, the real process began only after his friend introduced him to R.B.Subbu, who is the director of the film. After listening to 3-4 scripts, they zeroed in on one. As a new entrant in the industry, Bhaskar was fraught with quite a few problems, the major one being signing in the actors with that ‘X’ factor, that too within his budget. The director suggested Indian Idol’s winner Sreerama Chandra for the hero’s role. It, however led to a lot of apprehensions like whether the audience would accept him as an actor. But in the very first shot, Sreerama proved his acting and dancing abilities. He is paired with Barbie, cousin of Priyanka Chopra. Both have done justice to the roles, believes Bhaskar. His team has roped in SV Ranga Rao as the negative lead, and they are hopeful it will too create a buzz. INSPIRATION He says there was no inspiration. It was rather a challenge, he had thrown to

himself. He wanted to prove ‘one just need the will, the way will be created in its due course’. It was also his belief that nothing can uplift a weary soul than a good movie that made him march on this new path. Thus his production house Shubam Creation was established. Now he understands that not only witnessing but even producing a movie can be entertaining. His banner wants to churn out only commercial or entertaining movies and has no intentions of passing messages through films. He acknowledges the support and encouragement rendered by the members of the Film Chamber. RISK He believes every industry comes with certain amount of risk. Citing his own case as an example, he says, “Look at my own shipping company. I hardly had any profit in the initial stage and first six months were very tough.” Exuding confidence, Bhaskar states that age is on his side and is his biggest asset and he can well afford to take risks. That is what he advocates to his peers too telling them to go after their dreams and take risks. “Rising from the grassroots has its own advantages. The struggle obviously gives people an extra confidence and hard life helps you hone your skills further. They are better prepared to face failures and losses. Even if one sinks midstream, he is certain to resurface with rejuvenated zeal and enthusiasm and emerge much stronger,” he says. SUCCESS MANTRA Whatever you want to do give it an honest try! Hit or flop, leave the result to time. Equally important is teamwork. HOBBY He used to play cricket regularly. However, with his busy schedules there is no time even to watch matches on television.

FUTURE PLAN He wants to produce another movie for which the work will start sometime in January or February 2014. He has planned to launch another newcomer in this flick, the name, however, he wants to keep under wraps for the time being. As a dream project he wishes to do a movie with the Mega Star or the Power Star. Within a decade he aspires to make his company the number one in Vizag shipping world. By 2015 he has plans to launch a Telugu news channel on a par with international ones. PRINCIPLE Learn from your mistakes and correct yourself. Then only one can succeed. We live in a 9- member joint family. One can imagine the magnitude of the responsibility. any dream to take an unbeaten path but only a few venture to tread on it. For those who have a fairly smooth sailing and sound backing it becomes all the more challenging. Convincing oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own self, the parents, and also the society is not an easy task. But Kalyan Kanuganti, Managing Director of Ksheeraawali, chose to swim against the tide and win the race as well. Despite having everything going great for him with a successful business run by his father, Kalyan decided to go by his instinct and start a different venture. It is not just the case with business; his approach to life itself is different.

Thus Ksheeraawali was born and Kalyan himself designs the jewellery. This apart, Kalyan is also a good singer. He had taken training in classical music for more than seven years. In fact, he has already sung for a couple of low-budget Telugu films. “Though I enjoy singing, I have not thought of making a career in that field,” he pointed out. Kalyan’s family business is infrastructure buildingmainly constructing roads. His grandfather and father are involved in the business. They have floated a company called KCPL, which takes up road construction contracts across the country and execute them. Though he still takes interest in the family

BACKGROUND Kalyan Kanuganti seems to have developed an aptitude for creative things in life. Maybe the talent has been imbibed in him by his father who is a very good artist (illustrator) while his mother has a penchant for things of beauty - be it dresses or artifacts in the house. Though Kalyan obtained his Masters degree in Business Management from Scotland, he continued to be passionate about designing and drawing. FUTURE PLAN Kalyan wants to take care of Ksheeraawali for some more time. Once he is certain of it being in the right track, he wants to hand over the business to his mother and sister. “Eventually I will be moving to construction business,” he says. He is also certain that though he moves away from the regular functioning of the firm, he will stay attached to it through his jewellery designs. A big league director who gave blockbusters to stars like Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh, Jr. NTR has taken up the challenge of directing a greenhorn, of course for a handsome bargain. Producer Bellamkonda Suresh approached director VV Vinayak to launch his son Srinivas in a big way. The producer is reported to have offered him a 1000 yards plot, in Jubilee Hills and Vinayak is happy to own the property in prime locality. The director, however, took nearly eight months to give the nod to Gopi Mohan’s script after listening to more than 40 to 50 scripts. Finally he began shooting. With this project Vinayak has touched the 10 crore mark and joined the elite club of Puri Jagannath, Rajamouli and Trivikram Srinivas.

She was born and brought up in Dubai where she studied up to 12th standard. She later moved to Bangalore to pursue her degree and studied for two years. At the age of 14, she did some amateur modelling for fashion design graduate students. Catherine was spotted by Prasad Bidappa and she modelled in his circuit. Her broadminded parents have always encouraged her to pursue extra-curricular activities like singing and dancing, ice skating and public speaking. Compare Allu Arjun with Nani, your hero in Krishna Vamsi’s Paisa? I don’t like to compare people. Nani is a fantastic actor. I shared a good rapport with him. It was fun shooting with him. Tell us about Paisa. I play a conservative Muslim girl who is sweet, inhibited and talks a lot with her eyes only. It is a total contrast to what I played in Iddarammayilato.

What is your New Year resolution? I don’t believe in any New Year resolutions. I don’t think we can make changes in one day. It has to be consistent. What difference do you see in Telugu and other language movies, acting-wise? Not really! I am very happy with the kind of work I am doing in Tamil and Telugu.

What kind of roles do you like? I like to play different roles. I don’t like to be typecast. If a nice script comes my way with an exciting character, I am ready for it. Till date I got a lot of appreciation for whatever roles I have done. Obviously, I seem to have done justice to them, no matter in what language it is. Audience accepted me in a big way especially in Andhra Pradesh. I thank them for their love. I shall do better in future.

Going by your film career in the past two years, people from industry feel that you have hit the jackpot. Your take on it. I really don’t know how to react to it. Let me tell you, I am glad that people think about me that way. Till date whatever movie I have done, I am pleased with it. I am fortunate enough to get the opportunity to work with some of the greatest persons of the industry. Even audience have accepted me in a big way. This itself is rewarding and inspires me to give my best to the future projects.

Your first film in Telugu happened in February. Since then you picked it up pretty fast. How did you do that? I started off with Chamak Challo. Neelakanta Sir wanted me for the title role. I really liked the character and the script. And we started shooting. That was when I got an offer for Krishna Vamsi Sir’s Paisa and got auditioned for Puri Sir’s Iddarammayilato.

Of late, heroines have little to do in this hero-centric field? Your comment. Actresses are more than mere glamprops. Take for example Arundhati, the film is heroine-centric and revolves around Anuskha.

Any Kollywood films? I am making foray into Tamil films with two flicks, the first being Kaali in which my co-star is Karthi and the shooting of it is in progress. The second film is a yet-to-be-titled S. Thanu production, directed by debutant Santosh in which I am cast opposite Adharvaa.

Though you hail from Kerala, you did only one film in Malayalam. Reason? I am a Malayali. However, I was born and raised in Dubai. So I never really spent my life in Kerala. Moreover, I don’t do films on the basis of language like that I am a Malayali and so I have to work in that language. I did one good film in that language and then moved on to Telugu. I would rather give a fair chance to all languages.

Did you feel sidelined when you had to share the screen with other heroine Amala Paul in the film? It was not easy to sideline me in the film. I did not get sidelined. (Laughs)

Are you dubbing your own dialogues? Do you find any impediment in delivering dialogues? I am not dubbing for my films though I don’t have any problems in delivering the dialogues. My language skills are not perfect enough to dub.

What one change you want to see in the society? I wish that the women in the country are safe, empowered and can take care of themselves.

lka Jaju of Sugandhikaa may look soft. But just don’t go by her appearance. Once she dons her professional avatar, she takes you by surprise. She is known for her brilliant venue arrangements for various events and embellishing them with her signature floral touch. It won’t be wrong to call her a woman with ‘flower power.’ She is also the official decorator of Hotel Dolphin, The Gateway Hotel, and the coveted Varun Beach Novotel. Is that all? Not certainly! She is the city’s one of the ace decorators whose passion is setting the ambience, packing trousseau and managing weddings too. However, one might not find her hoardings or banners anywhere in the city, as she believes her work speaks for itself. She has been getting her publicity purely by word of mouth for the past 13 years. Living upto her punch-line ‘My client is a guest for his/her party’, she has been doing wonders, taking each project as a new challenge which she has to execute better than the one earlier.

BLUEPRINT Creativity has been her forte right from the childhood. Alka used to add her artistic touch to everything she took up as her hobby- right from garnishing the food cooked by her mom to setting the table for parties, making handmade birthday and greeting cards to painting and embroidering saris. She used to find everything useful- from chocolate wrappers to old thread to discarded clothes and come up with something brilliant using them. She cannot recall a single day she has spent without doing something creative. All this, however, is inborn and purely self-taught, with no formal training. Although she hails from a conservative Marwari joint family, she never had to make any compromises as far as her dreams are concerned. Her mom Mrs. Sharada Raathi, who herself studied B.Ed, has been always progressive and liberal in thought. With her support, Alka obtained Post Graduation degree in English from AU, that too as a top ranker. Thus, Alka was all set to face the world, armed with her creative brilliance in one hand and academic excellence in the other. LAUNCH Even after her marriage, she was never out of touch with her passion. She kept her artistic pursuits going on by taking classes at home on salad dressing, cooking, gift wrapping etc. She is a born winner. Whether it was a flower rangoli competition at VUDA Park or cookery contest at Daspalla Hotel, whatever contest she took part in, she always walked away with first prizes. Calling her bestie, Sravani Chitturi, as her lucky mascot, she says professional

beginning took off 13 years ago when she packed Sravani’s trousseau. She took up the task of designing the mega VUDA flower show as a trial. This got her accolades from all quarters. It was Mr. Rajendra Prasad, GM, Dolphin Hotel, who gave her a big break as official decorator of his property, though she was quite a greenhorn in the field. PILLARS OF SUPPORT Her parents are her greatest strength. “You are my Indira Gandhi, and you will shine like her one day,” this is what her dad, the late Mr. P.K. Rathi used to say, recollects Alka. She always followed his one principle ‘think big, dream big and that’s the only way you can do something big in life.’ While her father is her hero, her mom is her inspiration. Destiny is kinder to her, as she got an equally supportive husband Mr. Vijay Jaju. Without him she wouldn’t have been what she is today, says she. A dedicated mom, who still is particular about attending each and every parentteacher meeting, Alka proudly says she got two very understanding and caring kids, Alvika and Jayadev. Stating that her husband and children have made a lot of sacrifices, she says, “that is the reason why I refuse to keep away from them for more than the time required for my job.” OBSTACLE Till date all those people with whom she has business pacts are encouraging and turn into her extended family. “But once in a while one does land in awkward situations. I might appear docile, but I am quite capable of looking after myself. I know how to draw a line and tell people loud and clear ‘don’t mess with me’,” says Alka.

“In fact, to quote a very recent incident when I was offered assignment of Tippala family, a lot of people advised them not to give the responsibility to me and warned them that organizing such a high-profile wedding was beyond my capacity as I am a woman. However, Mr. Gurumurthy Reddy and Mrs. Vijaya reposed faith in me. I had my first event management project. Braving all odds I organized everything – right from trousseau packing, arranging mehendi artists to organizing sangeet and mehendi parties to setting up the venues for the pre wedding events and for the actual wedding. It did give me a lot of mileage,” adds Alka. FORTE Being in Vizag she is more organized, especially when it comes to sourcing her required materials from all over the country and abroad too. Technology has made life easier and she has built a strong network. She procures cymbodium orchids from Holland and New Zealand for big weddings and everything is done over phone and through internet. When it comes to work she is a hard taskmaster who strives for perfection. She doesn’t hesitate to make her team re-do the entire work if she is not satisfied. Though she has a well-trained team working for her, she gives her personal touch to every project which becomes her signature style. She pays attention to every minute detail. If it is about the decoration which needs to stay longer than two days, she chooses the flowers and greens which don’t wither fast. NOT ONLY FOR THE TOP “People think I charge more, but I do not. big weddings and small ones too. There are occasions when I have done them for free or limited budget and I feel it is a part of social work. The hearty smile on the faces of the bride’s or groom’s parents when they see the venue is my reward,” shares Alka. POST PACK-UP A thorough professional, when on the job she even forgets that she has kids at home or she is hungry. Hence after a hectic season she wishes for an ideal break, which would be a quiet day at home, where she can happily keep her phone locked in the wardrobe and not knowing where the keys are and spend quality time with her family. TIPS This field gives a lot of creative satisfaction, but it is not a bed of roses and at times it might become too stressful. It is a totally labour-oriented industry. One not only has to train the workers thoroughly but has to update them with the latest trends. FUTURE PLANS She lives in present. Neither does she think about the past nor has she really planned anything substantial for future. “If anybody does justice to whatever one is doing, he or she will reach the pinnacle naturally,” she says.

“Touchwood! My clients repose faith in my expertise and commitment, they give me absolute liberty to work on their projects. When the clients believe that you will give them the best, it is your responsibility to give cent percent output.”

BUCKET LIST She feels blessed that she could turn her passion into her profession and there is nothing more to wish. She wishes her children do well in their lives. Committed to the cause of social service, she also wishes to create more employment. Though happy with what she created till date, she is still waiting for her masterpiece, which is yet to come. If it had been a decade ago, her bucket list would have been overflowing.

FRAGRANT PATH Flowers are her major source of inspiration. She feels earlier they were not given their due. People have the habit of dumping flowers randomly whether it is in making a bouquet or decorating the wedding venue. One can always bring a twist; give a lot of style and life to them by adding the right complementing element. For example, a flower arrangement with drift wood, metal wire, crystal balls can bring that extra ‘X’ factor to it.

DESTINY VIZAG A quintessential Vizagite, Alka watches the progress of the city with great interest. She finds an enormous growth in her own field over the recent years. The market is flourishing; people have started organizing Big Fat Weddings. “The city’s natural beauty facilitates ample opportunities to hold spectacular events. Five years down the line Vizagites need not look for outside decorators. The local talents are certain to takeover,” says Alka exuding confidence.

SPIRITUAL STRENGTH Alka draws her strength from spirituality. She does throw her heart and soul into her work and gets personal with every project she takes up. Her commitment doesn’t end there. She has to send a silent prayer to Baba to make the event a success for the sake of her client. rom childhood tomboy to a young world-renowned designer, enlisted in the top ten most inventive and ingenious jewellery designers by the World Gold Council, the flight may not be impossible for a person of Suhani Pittie’s calibre. But what really makes her story different and fascinating is the incredible and supersonic speed with which she covered the distance. If one wants to know how, Suhani has her answers ready. She ‘lives through her work’, which she ‘absolutely loves’ and pursues ‘as if there’s no tomorrow.’ While the titles she chooses for her creations -‘Child of Eden’, ‘Grunge Begum’ and ‘Dances of Earth’ spell elegance and intrigue, her fiercely individual and honest innovations mirror her love for history, knowledge of the contemporary and an admirable knack of fusing the past and the present in her work. Her ‘jewel art’ can be found in stores across the world, including the prestigious Museum of Arts & Design, New York. Suhani tells us how she designed her career and life, besides her timeless pieces.

FROM CALCUTTA TO CALIFORNIA I had a very ‘Calcutta,’ upbringing, complete with being goalkeeper in street football tourneys. I was very athletic and my mom would have a hard time pulling me back into the house! But I was good at studies as well. I was the head-girl in my school and of the school club ‘interacts’. So I was majorly into quizzing, speeches, elocution, dance, music ... everything! I don’t think I was ever out of things to do! I did my schooling in Mahadevi Birla Girls Higher Secondary School and at the age of 17 I went to California to get a degree in Gemology. I am the first girl from my family to go abroad and I thank my parents for the faith they reposed in me. 3D GIFT When I was 14 my dad asked me what I wanted to do. Finding me rather clueless he started taking me to his office, where I was assigned to dust and keep his files in alphabetical order. I did that for a whole year. My father never wasted a minute of his day. He would either work or be engrossed in his passions and hobbies. I have never seen him sitting idle, stretching his legs. I guess I imbibe the same drive, discipline and determination. We never ever indulged in holidays or shopping. I got pocket money only if I was buying books for which I had to produce a receipt. My dad was very strict. None of us had personal TV or computer. We had to make do with whatever the programmes the whole family watched. We never ate out. There was never ever any conversation about fashion and clothes or even jewellery. Conversations were about studies, books, Mamta Banerjee and Mohan Bagan! As we were very good at studies, mom and dad never had to be after us. I still remember - I was in fifth standard and we had our parents-teacher meeting. My mom was actually standing outside the third standard classroom to meet the teacher. She didn’t realize that I was already in class five! My parents have been such an inspiration they gave me the gifts of self-confidence, independent thinking and courage to follow my dreams. UNPLANNED ARANGETRUM At 18, I started teaching in a Gemology school in Calcutta. Two years later and before I moved to Hyderabad in 2004, I established Focus Diamontaire, a school for Gemology, with the money saved from my salary. One day I was

toying with some old silver. I heated it, and made a trinket for my mom-in-law and people who saw her wearing it started giving me orders. Two months later, I participated in Bridal Asia. Before I knew it I was well into my career. TINKERING TALE I was never inclined towards design or jewellery. Even now, I love to get into the thick of technicalities. Whether it is gadgets or cars or even the refractive indexes of gemstones, I am a sucker for detail and love researching and reading on those topics. Gemology was my first love. I never looked at heirlooms or traditional pieces. I would always be toying with the rocks and pebbles in the garden. At the age of 7, when I didn’t even know that a subject of this kind existed, a chance look at amber in a book drew me to the world of gems. But somewhere I always felt I wanted to do something with stones. GRATIFICATION Immense. In any creative field, you do something brand new every day. That is liberating. SOURCE OF INSPIRATION Emotions, movements and expressions. It begins with the first impression that becomes more vivid and intense as it gets ingrained into the unconscious. I collect these feelings, memories, connections and observations. Raw, colourful, sensuous ancient customs merging with new forces inspire me. My designs reflect my love for metal, my mood and my surroundings. The old city, Charminar, the 200-year-old ancestral haveli, dancers on the streets, women with their ringing anklets, bangle makers, local potters, by-lanes, old photographs, tall buildings, brass, steel, and loads and loads of history books. I am enchanted by the past. Each collection brings with it a mood, a feeling and an emotion. My latest collection, for example, was about the free spirit, the naivety of the heart, pure love. My earlier collection reflected a stronger mood – about culture and strength, with depictions of Shiva, Islam, tribes and temples. If it is a jatra dancer in Begum Bazaar once, it is the history of Nizam at other time. I interweave all of this with contemporary fashions. Hence the mood becomes modern but the DNA is old. Perhaps that is why the collection is so varied! PURPOSE My designs need to be wearable and special. Each piece should be a narrative and dialogue, reflect a mood and is meant to tell a story. It needs to

have a DNA and a cultural reference. It needs to originate in history and transcend into today, an unexpected contradiction. The jewellery needs to be unapologetically individualistic. CREATIVE DESIGNING, A CHILD’S PLAY FOR A WOMAN? It has nothing to do with being a woman. Creativity has a lot to do with emotions. So I refuse to call any creative field, especially jewellery, an easy task. The creativity is just one aspect but to translate it into reality is the main task. WOMAN IN THE MAN’S WORLD The problem begins with us women. It is the woman who gives the man the authority and right to call it ‘his world’, particularly those mothers, who even today, differentiate between the boy and girl child. This gives the boy a ridiculous ego. IDOL Many women, in fact every woman, who balances her home and career with dignity, grace and sincerity. I find women who have figured out this balance, amazing. THE MOST INTERESTING CREATIONS Grunge Begum. Because with that I made copper and patina cool. THE MOST OVERWHELMING RESPONSE OR COMPLIMENT “My granny thinks mad about your work”- Shweta, age 14 “Your jewellery is exquisite”- Jimmy Choo. AWARDS AND ACCOLADES I can state three instances off the cuff. First: When the World Gold Council put us in the list of the top 10 most inventive and ingenious designers in the world. The biggest body in the industry choosing us was a definite high, at the same time was very humbling and encouraging. It goads me to do better. Second: We were chosen by the British Council to showcase for the British Royal Family. A very important body had entrusted us with a very, very important show for some very, very, very important people. You have to be darn good! That solid belief has always stayed with me, pushing me to work harder. Third: When the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, commissioned our work and told my business partner that they rarely see such perfect and timely paperwork! You can’t grow if the business aspect is not perfect and we have worked hard on our model. You have to work your backside off and you can’t let anyone down.

So I read books on world leaders, the Indian independence struggle, economics and political history of countries. I am also a self proclaimed movie critic and the biggest Harry Potter fan there ever has been and of course, I own an Xbox! FASHION I repeat - Fashion fades; Style is everlasting.

The third generation veteran player Mr. Manchukonda Venkata Singariah is the guiding force behind his progeny, though he leads a peaceful and retired life now. He is all enthusiasm to make a trip down memory lane to relate their success story.

BACKGROUND “Our family business dates back to 1890,” recollects Mr. Singariah. It was in this year, when my grandfather the late Kodanda Ramaiah, started jewellery business in the Old Town area of Visakhapatnam. He was the first registered jeweller of the district and after running the trade successfully for many years, he was succeeded by my father the late Mr. M. Appala Raju. However, I had different plans. I obtained my B.Sc degree in 1957 and wanted to take up a job, offered to me in Dehradun. But my father didn’t approve my decision as he felt that I rather be a boss of my own than being subordinate to someone else. Thus the responsibility of two generations of successful business came on my shoulders in the same year. ADDITION Previously only locally manufactured products were available in the city. Finding them a bit too heavy and chunky to my liking, I thought of

exploring new areas which offer more elegant fare and badly wanted to give the local buyers a change of style. That is when Coimbatore, which was known for its light-weight ornaments with intricate work, caught my attention. I travelled extensively and introduced meticulously chosen designs to the local market. It became an instant hit. Yet another new trend I introduced was to display the ornaments in glass cases to attract even the passers-by. This new look of my shop earned a good mileage.

RISE OF SONS I was always very liberal with my sons. Although they used to help me out in managing the shop from a very early age, I never coerced them to join me. They voluntarily came into the field. I proudly say that they have added an extra sheen to our glory. HOW THEY FARE Interestingly, both are of different natures. The elder one is a risk-taker. Besides expanding the main business, he also eyes greener pastures. The younger one gives a lot of importance to widening the customer base and his networking skills come handy here. SHARING & CARING My elder son M.Y. Subramanyam fondly called as Raja keeps overall view of the business and the second

one Ranga’s focus is mainly on the shop. I used to manage the manufacturing department. I don’t recollect a single occasion when we had a clash of ideas or opinions. On the contrary, we always had a very smooth sail. Even if there is a problem we work together to find a solution. USP Since the beginning, we have been strictly maintaining our quality with special emphasis on durability. We don’t believe in just selling a product. We also extend our expert advice and service to clients and help them choose the right product. Fortunately, this approach helped us build a strong goodwill in the market and we strive to maintain it at any cost. SAVITHRAMMA SAYS My role as Mr. Singariah’s wife is restricted to give him support at home. I never interfered with his business, nor did he ever question me over my style of running the house. Ours is a very closely knit family and all of us live in unity and harmony. I feel it is an absolutely ideal situation as we all have well defined roles to play like women take care of the home while men are at work. Fortunately my sons, daughter and daughters-in-law share our sentiment.

RAJA IN COMMAND

s he belongs to a family, which has been ruling the trade, it was not necessary for him to look elsewhere for his career. He has a natural flair for the jewellery business right from his childhood. It did not take either much time or effort to turn his passion into profession for the eldest born of Mr. Singariah.

ENTRY I used to go to the shop regularly though for short periods, even during my school days. This helped me learn the ropes of business pretty early. However, my formal entry was rather dramatic, drastic and absolutely on demand of a situation. It was in 1982 when I was appearing for my Intermediate examinations, my grandmother passed away and my father got busy with the rituals, which entailed a trip to Banaras. Naturally, I had to step into his shoes. This sudden development neither unnerved me nor put me off. I realized that it is ultimately the experience that counts and not the age. HURDLES This used to be an unorganized sector. It was primarily a family business dealing with handmade or made-to-order products. The scene changed after 1997 when government started importing gold officially. During this period retailers like Tanishq entered the market. However, 20-30% of this industry is still unorganized. CONTRIBUTION From 1983 to 1991, I was treading the path my predecessors paved. With the abolition of Gold Control Act in 1992, which imposed many restrictions like the ban on use of 24 carat gold, there was a perceptible shift in the gold business. This had its cascading effect on the jewellery stream. Due to this new development, we, who were restricted only to order-oriented business till then, could convert our shop into a contemporary showroom which facilitates neat display of wide collection of readymade jewellery. EVOLUTION Things have improved a lot over the years. The technological development, like software, system controls, e-billing made our lives much more easy and comfortable. Earlier, everything had to pass through us making our physical presence imperative. Honestly speaking, in present scenario with mushrooming of jewellery shops and escalating gold rates, there is not much growth or scope in this trade. Even the profit margins have fallen sharply. There is a change in the basic objective of buying gold. Now people buy ornaments to satiate their aesthetic sense and not as an investment. Of course, I still look at gold as a good investment option as nothing else can match its liquidity value. I recommend one should at least

have 20-25% of his/her assets in gold, out of which 15% should be in ornaments and 5% in solid gold. FUTURE PLANS Finding the present market not too encouraging, I diversified and entered real estate business. In three years we have completed three residential projects. Presently, we are working on a project of 42 flats at Sriharipuram, Gajuwaka. A year ago we floated Navaratna Estates, in partnership with Suresh Jain and his brothers of Sanghvi Jewellers and Shyam of Shyam Zaveri Jewellers. The venture is of 154 villas near INS Kalinga. This will be a gated community with each unit having an area of 1,850 sft. and common facilities like club house, park etc. In partnership with Mr. Suresh Jain and his brothers and Mr. K. Satya Narayana (Chinna Babu), we have taken up Rs.10,000 cr. turnover of bullion business, which was started in 1997. We were doing pretty well till recently. Unfortunately, last July, the government had imposed some restrictions stating that on each 100 kg of gold imported, one has to export 20 kg. So as of now we are importing only silver. But we have plans to set up export of jewellery business. WIFE NARASAMMA ANDAL Ours was an arranged marriage and I grew up with the thought of marrying him. So we understand each other very well. He can face any situation without being bogged down. He may appear short tempered. But he is not. He is the coolest person one can ever see in the business circles. To be frank, I lose temper and he placates me. His love for family is unconditional. SON GOWTHAM I was born with a hearing problem. But for my fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unrelenting efforts, I would not have been here now, taking a pro-active role in the business. There was not a single medical facility he did not approach to bring me into the mainstream. Today I am a happily married man with two children. I am a little intimidated by my father because he is very strict though extremely loving. DAUGHTER NEELA KAUMUDI He is very caring. His love is not only for me but everyone in the family. We are friends and I can share anything with him. He trusts me a lot and knows that I shall never let him down. Even if I commit a mistake, I am not scared to admit it to him as he has taught me to accept my faults gracefully. As a businessman he is quite a risk-taker. He empathizes with his employees and helps them out in distress. He is my role model. DAUGHTER-IN-LAW VYSHNAVI It is an ideal and excellent atmosphere any daughter â&#x20AC;&#x201C;in-law could ask for. It is such a united and understanding family, I had become a part of it right from the day one. All of them are very supportive, especially my parents-in-law. I am a daughter to them.

ENTERPRISING RANGA

e fits the bill of the youngest son perfectly. Appalaraju Sriranga, affectionately called Ranga, can easily be likened to the typical care-free younger brother characters that our films often show. His exuberance and playful disposition give away who is the most pampered of the brother duo. However, even a casual chat with him reveals that he is a seasoned and a serious businessman too. With over two-decade experience behind him, Ranga knows all the nuances of business like back of his hand and is a perfect complement to his brother.

Excerpts ENTRY I was never too bright in my studies. Hence I never nurtured dreams beyond our family business. I completed my graduation through distance education. I also obtained diploma in Gemology. Though initially I used to make short but regular trips to the shop, I took it up as a full time vocation in 1994. Those five years of training taught me tricks of the trade. May be I am not into serious studies, but my knowledge about the happenings in the market and the world around is pretty sound. I have developed unique knack of keeping a tab on the contemporary issues. The inputs I collect as a market analyst stand me in good stead and keep me in the forefront. CONTRIBUTION My major gift to the jewellery-loving Vizagites is the chit scheme. This concept was prevalent in Chennai and I can very proudly claim that I introduced it to the city. Fortunately Vizagites too took to it like fish to water. This brought in good business. CHANGES The present market poses a lot of challenges. The penetration of

numerous players has triggered a stiff competition. Adding to it is the volatile gold rate. STRENGTH We always have our strong presence in the jewellery market. Even in the bullion business we enjoy a good reputation. Till now we don’t have any rivals in the Vizag bullion market, for that matter in the coastal region. It is a risky field with low profits and high losses. Only seasoned players can survive here. It is almost impossible for a retailer to take this path. That is the reason many people beat a hasty retreat. FUTURE PLANS I want to open another showroom in Gajuwaka and we have finalised a plot too. However, we don’t want to go beyond Vizag’s limits. WIFE SRI LAKSHMI SAYS The first thing comes to my mind if I have to talk of my husband is his helping nature. He is indeed a friend in need and highly reliable. Being a proactive member of Jaycees and Rotary club, he carried out many social welfare activities. He is always cheerful and gregarious. Out of his busy schedule,

he carves out time for us. He is a very dedicated father and an obedient son. DAUGHTER VYSHNAVI He is my best friend, I confide in him about everything - whether it is a problem in the school or a silly fight with friends. He never loses his cool. Infact I chide him. My friends mistake him for my brother. He is a very chilled out person. I still remember during my eighth standard when I wasn’t able to focus on my studies, my mom got worried. But he boosted my morale saying ‘whatever you score that is fine.’ One thing I admire most about him, is his respect for the elders. He never lets his ego come in the way of his relationships. He is very kind and helpful to everyone. SON ANANTH He is very composed. He never gets angry and never says no to anything we ask for. Only thing is he should be convinced about its utility. If I go wrong, he corrects me instead of punishing me. I am scared of my mom, not of him. Every Sunday he makes sure that he takes us out. He pampers us a lot.

unning a retail jewellery business for over decades successfully may mean repeating the much proven winning formula. However, Hanumanth Rai Sanghi, chose to differ and looked beyond his family business, retailing jewellery. With Gandhian ideals imbibed in him right from the childhood, Hanumanth Rai was more interested in starting an industry that would provide livelihood for a few hundred people. Moreover, this new venture also would help him in staying away from the clutter of retail business. He established Sanghi Jewellers Pvt. Ltd in 1991, which is one of the largest exporters of jewellery as well as the biggest precious stonestudded jewellery manufacturer in India. His high business values and remarkable acumen percolate down to the next generation.

LOOKING BACK My forefathers served the Nizams of Hyderabad. My grandfather Rai Gopilal changed the course, which was to be followed by the family later. Good at sourcing the best products, he earned the title Rai. The same has become part of my name. Being a Gandhian my father not only used to spin and wear khadi, but also used to donate it to Bhandars. Our family is known for education, modest living and upkeep of Gandhian principles. Youngest of seven brothers, I was asked to look after our Abids outlet. A B.Sc degree-holder, I was interested in electronics and reluctant to join business. PROFILE OF HIS COMPANY By 1980s we acquired immense jewellery merchandising and retailing experience and understood the constraints of traditional techniques. Ours is the first jewellery industry in Andhra Pradesh with latest technology. My education in science stood me in good stead, especially in the field

of precious stone-studded jewellery manufacturing. We started manufacturing jewellery for our own unit as well as for several other leading retailers. Today, after two decades, we take pride in being vendors to the leading jewellery retailers across the world! RISE OF SONS Both my sons have contributed equally to the business albeit in different yet complementing spheres. Sanjay understands the trends, analyses them and predicts the market. His creative and out-of the box thinking has been the backbone of our business. His PR skills earned us name across social and business circles. I should acknowledge his meticulous handling of the finances. Ritesh provides Sanjay and me with a perfect support system. He has good grip over technicalities, human resource management and administration. He is excellent in accounts and cost-control.

SHARING AND CARING We have very clear cut division of work and complement one another other. I look after the major portion of production activity though my sons also play some role in it. Using latest machinery and adapting new technology is my interest. Sanjay looks after planning, finance, organization, etc. Ritesh takes care of sales and marketing, production accounting, etc. It is very smooth as there are no over-lapping domains. Of course, all decisions are taken collectively. WIFEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S SUPPORT Yes, I definitely need to thank my wife Sarala who has silently contributed to my success by being a supportive wife. EXCERPTS HIS JOURNEY I joined our family business very early to take the family legacy forward. First few years were spent in retailing. However, I was restless to explore new avenues. This could be because I always read a lot about successful businessmen who inspired me in many ways. My education in commerce stream and my ambitious approach made me try my hand at stock market. Unable to wriggle out of the jeweller’s mould I went to study Gemology and graduated in 1989. I was anyway looking to go beyond the normal retailing and came across the most innovative casting technology which had arrived just a year before in India. My entire family supported me in taking the leap into manufacturing and I was ably assisted by Ritesh. At that point we did not know that we were doing pioneer work and we would be instrumental in making Hyderabad a leading manufacturing hub. Many have followed our footsteps and today the city is known for unique precious stone studded jewellery and we top the country in this field. DREAMS AND PROJECTS Understanding the latest global trends and to increase our own range we diversified into retailing of Fine Silver Jewellery. Our products are designed and sourced very selectively from all corners of the globe. Today, Trisa, our showroom of silver and white metal ornaments, has retail presence across various formats and cities. Trisa is growing in leaps and bounds. We intend to reach 100-store count in a year’s time, under the management of our nephew Rakesh Agarwal. LIFE PARTNER As I introspect I realize that my life partner Pritha has played such a significant role in my life that nothing would have been possible without her unstinting support during our busy journey. She has always been a pillar of support and I can bank on her for all those filial responsibilities, which I may have shrugged off while focusing passionately on the jewellery business.

CHILDREN Though dedicated to business, Sanjay finds time for family and children and believes that spending quality and useful time with them is important. “I see a lot of myself in my children. Excerpts HIS JOURNEY I completed my graduation in commerce and joined the manufacturing unit which was still in a formative state. We started off with silver jewellery as the metal was much cheaper and we wanted to test the waters before investing on gold. At the end of it I realized that the real potential lies in gold jewellery. Within a span of three years we started manufacturing gold jewellery. Since then there was no looking back. We grew in leaps and bounds in all aspects of the business. It has been a challenging journey and a happy one too. The huge circle of our family friends and well wishers speak for it. DREAMS AND PROJECTS My dream was to establish a big and reputed jewellery manufacturing company. My father has been in this business for long, running a retail

outlet. The concept of waiting for customer to come to the shop was pinching me. So I insisted either we should involve in wholesaling or manufacturing. The world is open and we can go anywhere when we manufacture the products. I also believe that we need to participate in business exhibitions which open doors for newer markets. Controlling production costs and managing manpower are very important to me. HIS CONTRIBUTION My noteworthy contribution to our company is exports. We have expanded our presence and business by exporting to various countries. Today we are one of the leaders in this field. The result has been that the government of India has recognized us. The company has been justifiably awarded titles like Emerging Export House and Star Export House. Quite understandably, we are the most preferred manufacturers of India.

As long as there are beautiful and elegant men and women in the world the concept of jewellery lives on. Hence gold business will never die and it will continue to grow and we like to be better positioned to render best service. Look for the magnificent church at the edge of the cliff, Chapora Fort (now in ruins); Mormugao Fort, containing a towering bulwark, three magazines, five prisons and a chapel. Old Goa is known as ‘Rome of the East’. Don’t miss the rage - Sunburn Goa, in its 7th year, this 3-day-long (Dec 27 - 29) annual event is Asia’s biggest electronic dance-music festival. SHOPPING For a pure local market feel, go to the Friday Mapusa market that sells everything from curios to old coins, dried fish to spices or the Wednesday Anjuna Market. Souvenirs worth picking up are brassware, terracotta, shell work, colourful masks, cotton bags, wooden toys, table mats woven from sisal or banana, coconut or pineapple fibre crochet, carved furniture, bamboo work, papier-mâché etc. Food items like cashew nuts, spices, Feni, wines are good buys. Not to miss the Flea Market at Anjuna, where majorly foreigners, besides merchants from the other states of India sell clothes, trinkets, sculptures, wood carvings, other kinds of handicrafts and semiprecious stones. The Saturday Night Market or Ingo’s Night Market in Arpora, a village near Baga is equally popular. Goa’s shopping charm lies in haggling.

GASTRONOMY Besides chicken and beef, there is a mindboggling variety of seafood - the regular prawns, tiger prawns, lobsters, crabs, mussels and squids. hristmas conjures up images of Santa Claus, gifts and a host of culinary delights. Executive Chef Anil Naidu of Central Court Hotel, which recently bagged the Award for Excellence - 2013, takes you on delicious trip.

ROAST TURKEY WITH GRAVY & CRANBERRY SAUCE

INGREDIENTS 5-6 kg turkey 50 gm unsalted butter, softened TRADITIONAL STUFFING 185 ml (3/4 cup) Chicken stock 160 gm (8 tbs) butter 1 1/2 cups chopped onion 2 celery sticks, chopped 3 tbs chopped fresh sage 1/2 cup of flat-leaf parsley 2 tbs chopped fresh thyme 8 cups fresh white breadcrumbs 1 lemon, rind grated grated fresh nutmeg CRANBERRY SAUCE 175 gm Cranberry (optional raisins) 125 ml (1/2 cup) port Zest and juice of a large orange 1/2 cup redcurrant jelly

GRAVY 2 tbs plain flour 225 ml red wine 600 ml chicken or turkey stock 3 tbs redcurrant jelly Salt and cracked black pepper to season METHOD For Stuffing: Place chicken stock in a saucepan and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to low and leave it to simmer. Melt the butter in a large frying pan over low heat. Add onion and celery and cook, stirring continuously to prevent burning, for 6-8 minutes. Add herbs and cook for one more minute. Remove it from the heat and place in a large bowl. Add breadcrumbs and lemon rind and stir. Add only enough stock to the mixture to soften, and then season well with salt, pepper and some nutmeg. Set aside to cool completely then use to stuff turkey.

FOR SAUCE Place 175gm cranberry (optional raisins) in a medium bowl, cover with boiling water and set aside for 30 minutes. Drain the cranberry (raisins) and place in a saucepan. Add 1/2 cup port, the zest and juice from one large orange and 1/2 cup redcurrant jelly. Simmer for 6-8 minutes over low heat until thickened. Set aside to cool. FOR GRAVY Place a pan with the reserved pan juices from the turkey over low heat. Add two tablespoons of plain flour and cook, stirring, until golden. Add 225 ml red wine and 600 ml chicken or turkey stock and bring to the boil, whisking until thick. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 2-3 minutes. Courtesy:

MAIN DISH Preheat oven to 190째C. Grease a large roasting pan, smear the turkey breast all over with the butter and cover legs loosely with foil. Roast for 31/2-4 hours, basting every 30 minutes. Remove the foil in the last 30 minutes of cooking. Set aside for 20 minutes to rest (reserving the pan juices to make the gravy) before serving. DRESSING Whisk in three tablespoons of redcurrant jelly, season well with salt and cracked black pepper and serve with the turkey and cranberry.

INGREDIENTS 100 gm chopped dried cherries 100 gm dried cranberries 100 gm dates 100 dry figs 100 gm cashew pieces ¼ cup dried currents ¼ rasins ¼ tutti-frutti ¼ walnut 2 tbsp chopped citron ¼ cup dark rum ½ cup butter ½ cup brown sugar 1 egg ½ cup all purpose flour Half tbsp cinnamon ground Half cup ginger peel ½ cup milk

METHOD MAIN DISH Soak cherries, tutti-frutti, cranberries, raisins, currants, dry figs, walnuts, cashew and citron and ginger peel in 1/4 cup rum for at least 24 hours. Cover tightly, and store at room temperature. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Butter a round pan or loaf pan and line it with parchment paper. In a large bowl, cream together butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg. Whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon; mix into butter and sugar in three batches, alternating with molasses and milk. Stir in soaked fruit and chopped nuts. Scrape batter into prepared pan. Bake in preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then sprinkle it with 2 tablespoons of rum. DRESSING: When cooked, allow the cake to cool completely before cutting or icing. When cool, remove from the cake tin and slice or do icing and decorate as per your choice.

MINCE EN CROUTE

INGREDIENTS 240 gm lamb mince 100 gm mozzarella cheese, chopped 150 gm sun dried tomatoes, drained and chopped 1 bunch of basil, chopped 500 gm puff pastry sheet 1 egg, beaten Salt and freshly ground pepper METHOD Preheat your oven to 200°C. In a mixing bowl mix together tomatoes, mozzarella and basil, season with salt and pepper. Season the lamb mince with a pinch of salt. Cut the puff pastry sheet in half. Place the lamb mince on top of the pastry sheets, fold the pastry over and seal it with your fingers or fork. Cut out the excess pastry and place on a baking sheet seam side down. Brush each parcel with the egg. Bake for 40 - 45 minutes until it turns golden. Serve with olive-tomato salad.
