The needless protests against Miss Vizag Beauty Pageant showed our uncanny knack of blowing things out of proportion. The so-called activists didn’t, perhaps, even know what they were rising against. They were shouting hoarse against the event being associated with the Save the Girl Child theme, but missed a point. The event is a stepping stone for youth, who want to try their luck in films, modelling and fashion. By scuttling the pageant, are they not robbing them of an opportunity? Their claim that multinationals make money out of women's bodies is equally contentious. The line may

appear thin, but there is a clear-cut difference between aesthetics and vulgarity. Let us not mix them up. The minister unveiling the poster irked them. It looks more politically motivated move than a genuine concern for women. Don’t we need such elegant shows to meet the Smart City parameters? It is time we accepted the winds of change.

the tourism initiatives but can’t help pointing out the chink in its security system. The private boat operator has no licence; the driver has neither licence nor the experience and worst of all, the boat was overloaded. How could officials overlook such lapses? If the state looks at the tourism as a megabuck earner, it has to take the necessary steps to ensure the tourist’s safety. Compensation and condolence can never fill the gap left behind by the victims of the tragedy.

VISUAL SPLENDOUR & WELCOMING WARMTH By Chandrika Mantri
A
‘bleisure’ (business + leisure) trip is never complete without people talking of the hotel they stayed because that is where they look for a home away from home. Hence, choosing the right place of stay becomes a crucial issue in any sojourn. Offering such comfort zone, where the guest is assured of the best and latest facilities, Fairfield By Marriott entered the city. The first and foremost advantage it enjoys is its proximity to the airport- the first hotel to be just five minutes away from the airport. So the commuters are not hindered by the traffic-snarled NAD junction, close to which this hotel is located. The first impressions- it is big, glitzy and glamorous. The ambience is a mix of aesthetics and elegance. The immaculately designed lobby with sleek marble
floor, seating areas and a 24x7 shopping mart are invitingly warm with sun light filtering through absolutely transparent huge window panes. Equally sunny in his demeanour and speech, General Manager Mr.Sudhanshu Singh gives a tour of the hotel. With over 22 years of brilliant career in the hospitality industry, Mr.Singh can keep his fingers smack on the pulse of the people and has set his objectives right. “Providing a hassle-free stay for my guests is my primary concern and we go to any length to do it,” he stresses and goes on to substantiate his statement with the facts and figures.
EXCERPTS Rooms The hotel has as many as 121 well-appointed rooms including six suites. The wood-textured flooring complements white walls in the rooms that are dotted with marble-topped tables and desks, elegantly upholstered sofas and chairs. Special attention has been
lavished on the bathrooms. All rooms and suites come with Wi-Fi access, mini-refrigerator, LED television, safe, kettle with coffee and tea, snacks, iron and ironing board, hair dryer and ample supply of toiletries. Food & Beverages Kava, all-day dining restaurant with the capacity of 120 covers, offers an extensive & exhaustive North Indian, Andhra, Asian and Continental cuisines as well as lipsmacking desserts & beverages. Every dish is prepared right from the scratch and ingredients are sourced locally. No processed foods are served and portions are generous. A rich buffet breakfast includes a huge selection of egg dishes, fresh breads, homemade yogurt, fresh seasonal fruits and juice, pastries and what not! I am looking at and exploring the local cuisine to enrich the platter with that native aura. There is a space accommodating nearly 20 for the guests seeking
privacy. Kava - The Bar & Lobby lounge is another impressive and spectacularly designed space. You can try freshly brewed coffee, nectarous cocktails or sample from the international wine list. Add Ons We have a well-equipped gymnasium to cater to our health-conscious guests. Snacks and beverages are available at The Market, a 24x7 convenience store within the hotel. The business centre meeting rooms are equipped with the latest audio visual facilities and highspeed Wi-Fi and serve as perfect venues for workshops and seminars. The rooftop can be turned into an ideal venue for big events and can hold a whopping 800 guests. I look at it as a great option with winter round the corner. We are soon starting a free shuttle service to the airport.
Staff Our new hire orientation programme introduces freshers to our culture. They go through a 15-minute training on daily basis. The managers participate in over 20 management training programmes. Our staff has been trained ‘by the best in order to be the best’.
USP Fairfield is the best hotel to stay for those looking for trade opportunities in the region. Besides all the high-end facilities, the proximity of the hotel to the airport helps them conserve their time and energy. Since the flourishing pharmaceutical and steel industry is located close by, the hosts and their guests can commute & communicate with greater ease.
Unique Initiative Marriott has launched an initiative called Shaadi by Marriott. The halls have been designed to accommodate big, fat weddings. They don’t cause any inconvenience to the in-house guests. The dimensions of the halls can be altered as per the requirement of the party. So people looking for modest sized-halls for small gatherings like birthdays, anniversaries, sari ceremony, etc, can take their pick. We have experienced wedding planners to help you out with all the details.
Mr.Sudhanshu Singh earned diploma in hospitality management from Indian Institute of Hotel Management Patna and degree in hospitality management from Business and Hotel Management School - Luzern Switzerland. Starting his career in 1993 as a management trainee at Renaissance Goa, he served as Group General Manager for India Operations at Ramee Group of Hotels. ll attempts to get him to talk of his entrepreneurial facility and accomplishments fall flat as he is full of BNI- right from the word ‘go’ to the parting handshake. No wonder Mahesh Mac Srinivasan is chosen as the President of Asia Pacific Chapters of BNI, the world's leading referral organisation. He is the first Indian to enjoy the privilege. Mac, who was in the city to address the local chapters, took time off to talk of his inextricable involvement and exemplary devotion to the organisation that strives to erase the trade boundaries across the world.
N EXCERPTS
The Yap Call I moved back to Bengaluru after a decade-long sojourn in the US to set up a company. That was when I heard of BNI from a Malaysian friend -Yap. I didn’t buy this concept, thinking it was a multi-layer marketing. However, at his behest, I happened to land in a BNI meet in Mumbai and returned a changed man. Impressed What really stumped me at the meet was a coffee and tea vending machine person giving reference of hi-tech IT networking. Though the dynamics foxed me first, the simplicity of the process impressed me immensely. The vendor, who was supplying coffee and tea to the staff of an IT firm, observed the company’s expansion to one more floor and was smart enough to find out why they were expanding and who they were networking with. That is when it snapped in my mind that this kind of direct networking is efficacious and needs no kickbacks and commissions.
On Bengaluru Chapters To start with, a couple of friends and I mustered a few members and launched the first chapter. Today we have 2000 members and 50 chapters. This steep increase can’t be attributed only to our active advocating but also to the rule that each chapter should have only one person representing one profession. I also acknowledge the role of a team of members who stepped up to contribute to the launching and support of new chapters. For eg., we had a web designer in the first group and to accommodate the second one, we needed to start another chapter. Indian Scene By the time the concept reached India, it was already fine-tuned and caught up like wildfire. Now we have set a number of records. a)
Largest chapters of 125 members in the world.
b)
Launching the largest chapter (112 members).
c)
Highest number of 100 plus chapters.
d)
Fostered growth among 71 countries.
Asian Chapters Our chapters are denser than others because basically Asians are more entrepreneurial in nature. Secondly, they don’t have flourishing job markets like their western counterparts; they have to sell to survive. We structured our chapters in such a way that they foster the growth of many more entrepreneurs. We have an extensive array of streams- right from Vaastu consultants, to doctors, investors and technology specialists.
Meeting Mode We conduct our meetings in a manner to attract more business for members in an efficient and effective manner. We start the meeting with a trade session & follow it up with breakfast, optimising the interaction time. We found the morning meetings are efficient because one- you beat the traffic and two - you
WE STRUCTURED OUR CHAPTERS IN SUCH A WAY THAT THEY FOSTER THE GROWTH OF MORE ENTREPRENEURS.
are sure to walk away with deals while your competitors are asleep. Advantage India We are now in a ramp-up mode and have the best systems in place. With a high level of discipline, ours is largely English speaking community. Our government is stable. This terra firma is necessary for trade to flourish. We have crossed US $996 million worth of referral business in 2017 alone and expect to cross the $1billion mark this year. Small and medium entrepreneurs have all the freedom to realise their dreams. Gone are the days when one
has to be either an engineer or a doctor. Now the youth can pick up business of any kind and magnitude. Our Tier-II and Tier-III cities have great talent base. By joining BNI, they can reach out to any corner of the global marketplace. Large companies have resources pan-India. Even SMEs can compete on a national scale by plugging into our system. BNI is like a gym. People have to come and work out. It is not a get-rich-club. Members have to attend the meetings and build trust, give and receive referrals.
Harsh Realities & New Hope India is taking giant strides in the right direction. Yet, we must admit our entrepreneur has to work ten times harder than his counterparts to get the basic things going because of the lack of proper infrastructure. With GST and demonetisation in place, we are in for good tax collection and great revenue which will be utilised to improve the infrastructure over the next decade.
Indian as The Leader At the end of the day it is merit that counts. Two years ago, we had undergone some leadership changes. I was asked to step up for a few months and I continued from thereon. Change in the leadership often results in loss of efficiency. But here the transitions resulted in a phenomenal growth upwards. Then they noticed that the systems and process I put in order enabled this growth. They sought my help across the Asia Pacific. I refuse to take the credit all by myself and insist that it is a matter of efficient team work.
The Structure Our CEO Graham Weihmiller heads three market zones- the Americas are headed by Gonzalo, Europe-Middle East and Africa are headed by Andy and I take care of Asia Pacific and have 18 countries under my jurisdiction. We are adding more.

A) The Survival Stage Business: Startups generally take 3 years to find their feet. Through BNI, they can be on their own within 18 months as they get good support from their chapter. B) The Stability Stage Business: As the trade runs well, the entrepreneur gets into a comfort zone and is likely to become complacent. BNI goads them out of this. C) The Abundance Stage: This is where they can give it back to society. Look at K.V.T.Ramesh, who brought BNI to Vizag. He started 5AM Club and is striving to build a healthy society. Entrepreneurs are encouraged to look beyond themselves and start supporting others and do good for the society. Vizag Scene We have 357 proactive members and 7 chapters. We have concepts like “Buy in BNI” - source products from BNI members and “Business beyond Borders”- our members go to different cities and countries and participate in trade delegations. Start Ups Start-ups, who plug into BNI, are certain to survive as they enjoy the advantage of referrals. Over and above that, we have a colleague system in place. Seasoned entrepreneurs, who have already gone through the grind, guide them and warn them of pitfalls. Our community holds their space while they stabilise. Women Power There is no gender bias in our organisation. In Mumbai, certain chapters have 30 to 40% of their members as women. They are fantastic in building relationships
and BNI is one of the safest environments for a woman entrepreneur to expand her business through referrals. Criticism I thank those who criticise us. That shows they care. We take all our criticism seriously and mend our ways where there is a need. People who come into our system can use the forum, those who cannot may go for another system. The Edge We keep upgrading technology and use it to help our members. Now members can close deals through a phone call. We are innovating. We are looking at BNI Alumni club. We have partnerships with big firms, airlines and hotel to get special privileges for our members. We are putting together global alliances with credit card companies and adding value to our members’ entity.
artiste member, who was barely articulate, speaks relatively good English and looks confident and has grown his business from a one man show to a venture with 21 other artists working with him. That shows we are impacting and empowering the grassroots too. BNI is not for everyone. Making all entrepreneurs BNI members is not my intent. I want a few good players, who make a difference to the economy and society. We want to do it in our quiet way and create a lasting impact on society and our community. Help the entrepreneur Make in India and take it to the world, though a structure and proven system like BNI is my dream.
My True Happiness When a member comes to me and says, “Thanks to BNI, my business grew five times. I went from a 200 sq.ft office to 2000 sq.ft one.” An

the birth of the outlet Sia Boutique. The name Sia (Goddess Sita) is evocative of the feminine charm that reflects in their exquisite collection. Just one year in to the field and the boutique made rapid strides and gained immense popularity. The 300 footfalls per month vouch for it. The store’s niche is a swarm of designs ranging from chic, elegant to stylish and ethnic, with a few funky accessories thrown in to satisfy the fashion conscious clientele. Adding charm and elegance to the store is the collection designed by their equally talented children-Ankitha Veerepalli and Aaron Borthwick. Know more about the boutique from the designer duo.

Motivation Supraja: I should thank my son Aaron for that. He wanted to work for a social initiative after his 10th standard. He started visiting the hospice, working with Dr.N.S.Raju, Managing Trustee of Age Care Foundation. I followed suit and started donating for the noble foundation. However, I realised that this kind of giving should come from my own earnings. I mooted the idea to Madhavi, who received it with great enthusiasm and equal zeal. Madhavi: I had a rather simple and straightforward reason to be here. My children have grown independent and I had a lot of free time on my hands. Perhaps, the latent desire to design clothes was always with me and of course, Supraja kindled it.
helps you survive in this industry. Madhavi: We started on 4th Nov 2017 and four days later the government declared demonetisation. It absolutely overwhelmed us. As time passed we came to terms with it. Understanding the market and clients is the key to any business. Know the pulse of the people and you are bound to be the brand that they love to associate with.
Modus Operandi Supraja: We travel to places like Jaipur, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai every two months to handpick our products. We stock everything from daily, casual wear to prêt line, boutique style. We offer tailoring services and customise as per the client’s demands. Madhavi: We both bring different skill sets to the table. While I am good at designing, Supraja expertise lies in choosing the right colours. Our tastes too vary. She prefers pastel and nude colours while I am for vibrant ones. This kind of contradictions really help in making our collection a rich mix of colours and designs.
Trends- yay or nay? Both: Nay. We don’t get swayed away by short-lived trends that are here today and gone tomorrow. For eg., the full sleeves blouse was in vogue during our time and it is back now, indicating that they keep going in circles. Hence, we make our own fashion statement.
Challenges Supraja: The foremost of all is neither of us has background experience nor knowledge on how to run it. Nor did we do any homework or research before we took the plunge. Hence, there were many hiccups en-route. It took us some time to understand the customers’ tastes and requirements. It is all hands on learning. I feel it is ultimately a good fashion sense that
USP Supraja: Our palette has assorted outfits from multi-designers, allowing the customers to pick a creation that best appeals to their better sense. Madhavi: Ours is a budget-friendly boutique that caters to people who look for constant change and don’t repeat their dresses.
Power of Clothes Both: People judge us by the way we dress. Wear a stunning outfit and you become a head-turner. A good dress can certainly elevate your mood. Misconception Madhavi: Saris are outdated. This timeless six-yard apparel has seen many twists and swirls. Supraja: Yes, I agree and add that we can create an eclectic mix of vintage and contemporary style by creatively pairing sari with jeans. Memorable Experience Both: A few customers from the US get their blouses, saris and lehengas stitched from us. They keep sending us pictures flaunting our designs, making us feel really proud. Future Plans Supraja: We want to keep this running smoothly, introducing a good wedding collection. We wish to hold exhibitions at different locations. Madhavi: We want to encourage young designers by holding events in Sia to showcase their collection.

implicity, comfort and elegance are three words that come to mind as we see AMSA by Ankitha Veerepalli, a qualified architect. Though she has no formal initiation into the field of dress designing, she nurses a great passion for it. The name AMSA is derived from her grandmothers’ name Sulochana and Amaravati. She effortlessly blends age-old traditions with present day aesthetics. What sets her brand apart is her flair for creativity and close attention to detail- be it colour or technique. easy task. Each day comes with a challenge and each challenge with a valuable insight. Designs Behind Design I don’t believe in making clothes that are relevant only for one season. AMSA is about timeless and versatile collection. My client should be able to wear them now and even after a few years. I want to propagate it as a lasting and sustainable brand. The Process I first sketch my designs, source fabric locally, selecting the fabric that suits the design best. I prefer

subtle, pleasant and pastel colours. The design is then given to tailors. I employ local women for hemming, stitching and finishing touches. I design dresses out of handloom saris, procured from the weavers of Venkatagiri and Nellore. The collection is for all occasions- be it cocktail party, daily wear, office wear or a brunch date. On display are kurtis, long length gowns, one pieces, etc. Designing Woes Yes, it was a tad difficult to make the tailors understand concepts. Initially, our tastes never matched. By and by, they picked up the threads and what I actually want.
The Novice I did not have any godfather or guiding force in this field. Nor did I have any real time experience of dealing with customers. I had to set up my own team, understand the fabric and even source it. Getting something made from scratch is not an

ne look at Aaron Borthwick and you associate him with glamour, glitter and grandeur. Here is a lad who discarded his comfort zone to pursue his passion - dress designing. He stepped out of Visakha Valley School, completing 12th standard and plunged into designing. Within a few months, he is out with his own clothing brand LABEL AB (derived from his name) on the first anniversary of Sia. He will be pursuing International Business Management at Barcelona next year, but is determined to continue with his first love –fashion. This self-trained designer has learnt everything through sheer grit and hard work. Ask him what keeps him on his toes and he replies without missing a beat, “I keep telling myself that I need to set the bar higher every day.” More about LABEL AB from Aaron himself.

eet Kethavarapu brothers and you are bound to
remember the adage- “Families are the
compasses that guide us. They provide
inspiration to reach great heights.” Inheriting a rich legacy and strengthening it manifold, they are wrapping it in all glory to gift it to their progeny. Yet, the brothers, Mr.K.Gurumurthy and Mr.Gurumurthy Gupta, Promoters of Fortune Inn Sree Kanya, remain humble and unassuming, indicating that they are untouched by name, fame and incredible success. The brothers speak of their eventful journey from their native place Makavarapalem to the City of Destiny and how they keep their family flag flying in the world of trade. But the conversation stays riveted to their proud possession Fortune Inn Sree Kanya which celebrated its 10th anniversary on 1st Nov 2017.
SMILES ON
BROTHERS By V.Sarada
EXCERPTS Genesis Gurumurthy: We belong to a very renowned business family and my grandfather, the late Sri Chinna Gurumurthy, founded Sri Kanyaka Parameswari Trading Company in 1940 and ran a number of ventures with great success. Gupta: We were brought up on noble principles of joint family run by our father, the late Mr.Devullu and brothers Mr.Ranga Rao and Mr.Narasimha Murthy. Journey Both: Our family shifted to Vizag in 1979 and established Sri Kanya Lodge, Sri Kanya Theatre and Sri Kanya Cine complex, besides a commercial complex. red | november 2017 | 52
Fortune Inn Sree Kanya Gurumurthy: Initially, we planned to build commercial units in the ground and first floors leaving the rest of the building for a lodge. But Mr.Ambica Ramachandra Rao, our relative & owner of Ambica Empire, Chennai advised us to go for an individual hotel, following which we developed a three-star hotel. Gupta: Mr.Ramachandra further advised us to go for a tie up with a brand. A few brands like Sarovar and Quality Inn approached us. But we chose Fortune Park Hotels Ltd., Member ITC’s hotel group. The hotel opened on 1st Nov 2007. Transition Gurumurthy: Earlier, we were dealing with only one aspect of
hospitality- boarding, but this is a different ball game altogether. But the transition was smooth, thanks to the brand which is meticulous in handling legal aspects, licenses and insurance. Gupta: We maintain transparency in our transactions and everything is methodically audited. We have auditors checking in incognito and scrutinising not only our facility but also others in the vicinity to give a comprehensive report of the city’s hospitality scenario. Instant Hit Gurumurthy: We started with a bang. Our hotel swarmed with foreign guests in the first two years. Gupta: Fortune Hotels even asked us to go for another property.
Marketing Strategy Gurumurthy: We believe in the maximCourteous treatment makes a customer a walking advertisement. Gupta: Fortune Hotels gather clientele, absolving us of the onus of looking for more business. Advantage Brand Gurumurthy: In franchise, we should avoid too much personal involvement. It is like sending our child to school after which we don’t have much of a say. Yet your presence too is important. We have to maintain a fine balance. Gupta: Meeting the standards is more important to Fortune Hotels than cutting the corners. We get involved when it goes overboard and overspend. We share the same passion of maintaining the standards. Hence, no conflict. Winds of Change Gurumurthy: We cater to corporate clientele. Earlier, the corporates used to spend a lot more on travel. Now they go for budget hotels. There is a change in the client’s demand too. Today all they want is a comfortable room with good Wi-Fi connection. Hence, all these aesthetic add-ons are irrelevant. For hotels like ours, this transition is difficult. Gupta: Today people want group bookings and firms lucrative packages. After the Mumbai terrorists’ attack, there was a huge drop in foreign visitors. Added to that was the state bifurcation, demonetisation and GST. The city has added 1000 more rooms offering a stiff competition. I note the flow in the restaurants is too much less these days as people prefer speciality restaurants. They make their choice even before they step out of their homes- whether they go for a Punjabi cuisine or Italian one. Online Booking Gurumurthy: We have our own online facility and tie-ups with a few operators. Gupta: The online facilities help us get more business as they may charge the client less, but pay us our regular tariff. USP Sree Kanya Gurumurthy: We allow 24-hour check-
ins without fussing over 24 hour mandate. Banqueting is our strong point and known for hosting events. Gupta: Our cafeteria meets high parameters of hygiene. Challenges Gurumurthy: The workers come with zero knowledge and get trained under professionals from Fortune Hotels. Then they get lured away for extra chips. Gupta: Quite a few employees stayed loyal to us right from the day one. Unforgettable Incidents Gurumurthy: That day we had a 1000people gathering and workers went on a lightning strike. The manager himself got into action and started washing the plates. The rest of the staff joined him. The Fortune Hotels training is such that their men can rise to any occasion. Gupta: We had the fortune of hosting celebrities like the former Tamil Nadu Governor Mr.K.Rosaiah, film stars like Ms.Tamannah and IPL cricket players. Film producer Mr.Dilraj stays with us. Vizag Future Gurumurthy: Hard to predict, dreams and schemes are aplenty for the Smart
City but we see little happening around. The fate of hospitality industry is linked to tourism too. We have to develop the city as a tourism hub. Gupta: The food and hospitality industry is here to stay. The cost of travelling aboard is almost on par with travelling at home. Hence, people prefer foreign jankets. This puts local hotels in a spot. Advice to Aspirants Gurumurthy: Do come, but with low debt-commitment. Tie up with brands. Gupta: This trade is hard to understand. For eg. our power tariff used to be Rs.3.6 lakh per annum which is now Rs.12 lakhs; egg used to cost 40 paise and now it is Rs.4.00. Ironically, the cost of our buffet remains the same. Future Plans Both: We want to upgrade our 50-room Gajuwaka lodging. Best Compliments We are always copiously served with compliments by guests. The Fortune Hotels trains the staff so thoroughly that they can appease any guest.

he new generation Kethavarapu is here to induct new blood into their family business. Young Sampath, son of Mr.Gurumurthy has already entered the scene injecting new vigor into the enterprise. Nikhil, son of Mr.Gupta, who is working with an insurance and financial ser vices company- American International Group (AIG) in New York City, is waiting in the wings to take the plunge. He talks of his future plans in a long distance interview.
Sampath: Engineering the Change I pursued International Baccalaureate Diploma at Indus International School, Bengaluru. That transformed my life, opening a world of opportunities. With an urge to go deeper into science and engineering, I pursued my Bachelors at Penn State University majoring in Materials Science and Engineering with specialisations in Engineering Entrepreneurship. I worked with SaintGobain Corporation as a Research Engineer for two years at Buffalo and one year at their R&D center in Chennai. Home Coming I joined the family business and took up a part time MBA at S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai for the Family Managed Business Program. Studying and working in both the countries gave me knowledge.
THE NEW FACE & YOUTH POWER Predicted Move Joining the family business was always the plan. But I followed my passion of engineering and research. This passion was the driver behind all my choices. All I learnt helps me, not always in the obvious forms. Steve Jobs’ quote fits the bill- “You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something-your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.” Motivation My grandfather used to proudly say that he was able to provide employment to over 300 people. I want to further build the organisation he started and provide employment to many more. Skills Needed Being able to think on your feet is vital as one comes across unprecedented situations. You are dealing with a wide range of customers who have very unique needs and expectations.
NIKHIL: VOICE FROM AMERICA After completing 8th standard in Timpany I studied 10th grade at Parkwood School International. I obtained my diploma in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program from Indus International School and went to pursue my Bachelor’s degree in Finance & Economics at Pennsylvania State University and I have been working with AIG.
On Family Business It gives you a lot of flexibility to operate and work with people you love. So, it’s a lot of fun. Not everyone gets to spend their entire day with their family. Whether I am at home or work, I am with family. On the flip side, expectations are high on your performance. Family and work constantly overlap. His Contribution I have worked with the F&B team to improve our offering, revamp the menu and redesign our presentation and starter menus.
Family Support My journey wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my parents and family. I look forward to coming back. I shall join my family business once I return. Hospitality: US vs. India The Indian industry is labour-intensive and their service quality is much better compared to that of the US. Our hotels provide value-for-money services to their customers whereas hotels here fail to do so.
“
I congratulate the promoters and the entire team of Fortune Inn Sree Kanya, Vishakhapatnam, on the occasion of its 10th Anniversary. The hotel has set a benchmark for hospitality, not only by consecutively winning accolades from governing agencies, but also from the community through its social responsibility initiatives. Fortune Inn Sree Kanya holds a special place for us in our journey as the hotel was part of our initial entry into Andhra Pradesh. The hotel strengthened its position and goodwill in the region. The same, however, would not have been possible without the passion of the late Sri.K.Devullu and continued support that Sri.Gurumurthy and Sri K.G.Gupta. We look forward to many more years of association in multiple locations with them.” Suresh Kumar, MD, Fortune Park Hotels Ltd.
“
It has been a decade since I joined this group as a waiter. Now I am the F&B Manager, all thanks to Mr.Gurumurthy and Mr.Gupta for appreciating my skills and capabilities. They go out of their way to take care of us and our families too. I want to introduce a new range of cocktails and a barbeque and grill section for our esteemed guests. I want to ensure that they relish lip-smacking cuisines filled with home flavours. -Jagadeesh, F&B Manager
“
I have been associated with Fortune Inn Sree Kanya for nearly eight years and it has been one amazing journey. I am extremely grateful to Mr.Gurumurthy and Mr.Gupta for giving me space to experiment and introduce new concepts. One thing that I can assure the guests is that the food at the restaurant is top-notch and the best in town. I now plan to introduce different cuisines to cater to customers from across the globe. -Naga, Executive Chef

Fortune Inn Sree Kanya is a fine contemporary business hotel centrally located in the city offering 68 well-appointed rooms, elegant conferencing and banqueting space, a wellequipped gymnasium, along with a wide range of services and modern amenities. Just 11 km away from the airport and 2.5 km from the railway station, it is a preferred destination for business and leisure transit travellers for a restful and comfortable stay. Having relocated from my previous assignment in Kerala, I find this city very friendly and accommodative. I am amazed with the cleanliness, sights and sounds of this beautiful city. rs. Sandhya Godey seems to be living by the adage. Through an initiative called Speaking Chalk, she, along with a team of 42 volunteers, imparts basic spoken English skills to almost 1000 underprivileged students of AU English Medium School. Just an hour is all I ask from my peers, says Sandhya whose smile and energy are as contagious as her dedication and determination. She is confident that a few more helping hands are sure to make all the difference to the disadvantaged.
Word Go As a member of Rotary Club Vizag Couples, I had organised Decathlonan event of 10 literary competitions like Sudoku, word maze, word building, elocution, essay writing, etc. for school students, making elaborate preparations. However, there were only few takers for it. Hence, I urged my friend Radhika Bodepudi to speak to her father-in-law Prof.Prasad Rao, Correspondent of AU English Medium School, to send a couple of teams. However, Prof.Rao was doubtful if they could compete with the students of the other schools. I paid a visit to the school to help them out. The students found it difficult to say even simple sentences. They still came for the event but barely scored any marks.
red | november 2017 | 58
Prof.Rao who was the chief guest at the valedictory function, caught me by surprise saying, “I came to know that you were interested in helping my students. Please promise me that you will.” I simply couldn’t say no. He almost immediately fixed a session for 9th and 10th standard students. To start with, I played a few ice-breaking games and got them to talk. But it was a tad difficult to handle a class of 118 students So, I roped in Radhika. Just One Hour I became famous among my friends for saying, “Hey! Do you have an hour to spare?” One of the volunteers started a Facebook group to get more people involved. I also had an active Whatsapp group called AU School
Volunteers. However, eventually we settled for Speaking Chalk, with the tagline Just One Hour. The group slowly started swelling with friends and friends of friends joining us. Serious Involvement I used to get a very casual response, “Anytime you need help, let us know.” I found that it was not very helpful as we needed sustained support for the project. To execute it, I needed people to spare at least one hour a week for six months. At present we have two volunteers handling one class. But I feel we need more to prepare the students for competitions.
Holistic Approach We crafted a syllabus taking valuable inputs from Shyla Kurma, Pavan Potharaju, Vaishali, Karuna and few others who have had years of teaching experience. Our classes are held every Thursday and our schedules are - for classes 1-6 (11:30 am to 12:30 pm) and classes 7- 9 (3:00 pm to 4:00 pm). The aim is not only to focus on their English-speaking skills, but also on aspirations, self-esteem, confidence and etiquettes. Recently, we started a system in which we reward the students who perform well. We judge them on the basis of four parameters- participation, retention, homework and out-of-the-box thinking. Pleasant Surprise In May 2017, my neighbour’s daughter P.Nandita and I held a three-week summer course for students from standard 6 to 9, charging a fee of Rs.100. We included various fun activities like word building, word maze, team games, skits, etc. At the valedictory ceremony, we were floored by the confidence they showed. Watching 50 children
perform with such elan was pure bliss. Some enacted Little Red Riding Hood, some sang Do Re Mi, some spoke about their future plans and what they learnt in class everything perfect and flawless. That made me realise that given the right push and guidance these kids can do miracles and that there is no stopping them. Titanic Ties After that summer session, I encouraged my students to read more books. But they had no such facility either in school or at home. It was during a chance conversation with Mr.Rana Uppalapati, Director of the Tanishq showroom, we hit on this unique idea of getting people donate books. That led to a collaborative event. Rana was making the invite for the event and asked me for the logo of Speaking Chalk to be included in it. The thought of making a logo never crossed our minds till then. Rana,
generous as he is, designed a logo for us and as expected, did a brilliant job. The event, titled Be a Queen, combined the launch of the Padmavati Jewellery collection by Tanishq and the Speaking Chalk initiative. Invitees were requested to donate books as they come to view the new collection. We collected nearly 1,500 books and segregated them class wise. The students were extremely excited as most of them had never read a storybook before. In fact, they never got to read anything but their textbooks. The happy look on their faces was heartwarming. We are now planning to start a library for them. 30 Words a Day Another incident that I can recall is the Spell Bee competition which I conducted as part of Rotary Club initiative. Our students agreed to take part in it with great enthusiasm though the preparation time was rather short. They had just 6 days to go. They learnt 30 words and their meanings per day. I was on cloud nine when they reached the second round. Though they did not win the contest, I must say that they were on par with other schools. This gives us hope- Yes, these children lack nothing. That they put in their 100% to learn everything they could in a short span of time makes me feel proud. Scholarship I have started a scholarship fund in my father’s name, the late Air Commodore G.Venugopal to support the students in paying their school fees. My sisters, Kavita and Sahiti, are a part of it. The money that we collected during the summer course was added to this fund. It is my good fortune that a lot of my friends and a few volunteers also came forward to help. red | november 2017 | 59
Message to Students At the end, it is not where you study, but what you do with what is available to you and how much efforts you put in to achieve your goal is what matters. We can show you the way, but it is you who have to travel down the path. Well- Rewarded Task I feel blessed and happy when I see their smiling faces. It is very gratifying to know that we are doing our bit to shape the future of these children. During the summer course, I bonded with some kids. When you get to hear their hardships, and background, it is very heart touching. It only reinforced my resolve to train more and more.

PA R E,
Help Pours In A friend from Qatar now supports four children. You may be surprised a girl, who is a total stranger and follows me on Instagram, sent Rs.5,000. Till date, we have helped 52 students. I arranged a meeting of the donors and children they are supporting. This kind of meetings make the kids aware that their progress is being tracked by their mentors. For those staying abroad, we did a FB live session. Here, I must speak of another incident. A boy asked me, “M’am, why do you support only girls? You think boys don’t need help?” My answer was simple. One- our girls are doing much better than the boys and two- donors also prefer to support girl students, for the reasons best known to them.

when we select and procure. Our main focus is on quality and no compromise there.
Role From procurement to trading, research and development to travel, from compliments to critique, competition to clients, administration to interviews – I am involved in all aspects of the business and there is a lot of work to do.
Staff Half the battle is won if the team is good. Our employees have been part of our journey. Over the years, they have become members of our family.
Competition We meet competition by staying alert to what is happening in the market, knowing our strengths and weaknesses. We lure our clients, spoiling them for choice. That is how we don’t let them think of other options. USP Variety and quality assurance. Target Clientele Anyone who is in a mood to splurge is my client. I am here to sell. My client is the main reason for my standing here. Families with upcoming shaadis, interior designers, homemakers and corporate staff travelling abroad fill my client list. Online Market It has definitely created a market for itself but still the touch and feel of a product happens only when you go out to shop rather than see it on your screen. A lot of clients tell us that we do online shopping as it is the in-thing but then coming back to our outlets and shop have their own charm. Criteria Location, price, size & approach are very important factors to be considered to set up a store. Standards We strive hard to keep up our standards by getting very choosy
Secret Behind Success A satisfied client with a beaming smile is behind our success. Training Trying to be fit physically and alert mentally seems to be a good formula. We have to be on our toes to survive in this market. Today satisfying a client with an appropriate range they look for is not a cakewalk.
time schedules and no fixed routine of holidays or work. So there is hardly any problem. My kids know that these alterations in timings are a part of a retailer because genetically they are born with these traits. Philosophy The philosophy is not to go for shortcuts and that is the spine of our thinking process. Hard work and being adept at the art of making a client happy are what keep our name alive in the heart and mind of all. Future Plans Future looks bright. I want the Bulchand name to come up whenever a shaadi is decided in a family. Weddings are the most celebrated events in our country and they are naturally lavish. I would love to be a part of every family’s memory in the trousseau shopping spree.
Turning Point The takeover in 2006 post my father’s untimely demise brought a lot of change in me. I realised the actual meaning of the word ‘responsibility’. This probably has been a turning point. Define Success “Still aspiring for my signature to become an autograph.” I read this somewhere and it is stuck in my mind. However, I attribute my success to the foundation laid by my predecessors. I focus on what I want to specialise in. Perhaps, achieving my goals in time has seen me travel this far. Hurdles Partnership woes, ego problems with the old staff. Topping all this, was getting accepted by the market and society as I entered this field as a young and inexperienced man. Juggling Roles My wife comes from a business family too, so she knows that the men in business have erratic

Risk Factors Our daily habits and lifestyle play a major role on our dental health. Here are a few things we have to observe:
There are a lot of assumptions about dental maintenance and people often don’t go for their bi-annual dental check-ups. You have to get your teeth checked frequently because they help in mastication, phonetics, swallowing food and last but not the least, expression of well being with a smile on the face. If these basic things are not accurately performed, there is a negative effect on the overall health. So, the attitude towards oral health should change. A healthy mouth can prolong life expectancy by at least 10 years.
• Mother to child transfer of dental bacteria leading to different dental complications in children
• Premature delivery and low birth weight
Why is it important? The mouth is the gateway to the rest of the body- a mirror of our overall well-being. Hence, it should be taken as a critical component of health. It is proven that poor oral health is one of the reasons for chronic debilitating health issues like

lamorous, bubbly, happy-go-lucky, full of life, MahalakshmiMehreen Pirzada has many epithets. The actor, who became a phenomenon in the industry with Krishna Gaadi Veera Prema Gaadha, is ready to surprise and treat her audience appearing in a different avatar in Jawaan. But the one thing that has remained constant is she does not make heavy weather about success or failure. The fact that her smouldering good looks and acting prowess are talked about across the country does not drive her life. Mehreen gets the kick from doing her own thing. Yep, she definitely adds the bling to bindaas! In her first ever detailed interview, she talks with great confidence.

Any unforgettable incident? Every day was a celebration. We were like this one big happy family. All of us are going to cherish the time spent working together.
Director Anil… He is ‘Red Bull’ to all of us on the sets. He is focused and knows what he wants from his actors. I have never seen him carry the script around. It seems to be crystal clear in his mind. We all owe our performances to him.
On working with Ravi Teja… Energy is his middle name! He is very humble and a chilled out person. There is always so much to learn from him. I can’t wait to share screen space with him.
Are you under pressure? Not really. I have been very choosy. I listen to the script putting myself in the audience’s shoes. If it is interesting enough, I go for it.
It’s a hat-trick hit with Raja The Great. What are your feelings? On cloud 9! I am glad that my work has been widely appreciated and audience could relate to the concept.
LATEST BUZZ
HERE GOES THE FUN CHAT:
Are you very accident-prone? I am a very happy-go-lucky person. You will always find me jumping and goofing around on the sets. So, obviously, I get injured frequently.
Any scenes that you improvised? Every scene needs to be improvised. After all, acting is all about reacting to the other person’s action.
Edinburgh for Adventure and Trekking and a pre-national air pistol holder. What next? Well, for a start, I have my eyes on the gold in the adventure and trekking category. I have a lot to accomplish and a long way to go. I feel the universe will give you what you desire, only when you are prepared to greet it with open arms. My arms are open to receive good things.

Upcoming projects? Jawaan and Nenjil Thunivirundhal (bilingual).
The films in which you were injured are hits. Coincidence? I am not superstitious at all. Yes, I got injured in all my films. That doesn’t hinder my nevergive-up attitude. If you have given your 100% to your profession, the audience is bound to appreciate you and your work.
On working with Anushka, Diljith & Suraj... Though I was a newcomer, everybody on the sets pampered me. I recall, during my beauty pageant competition in Canada, I was asked, “Which Bollywood actress would you choose as your mentor?” and I replied, “Anushka Sharma”. That time I had no clue that one day I would be launched by her and even get an opportunity to share the same screen space. She is like an older sister. I am awe-struck by her looks and performance.
What struggles did you face? Life itself is a challenge. All successful people have had their own share of ups and downs. But they have carved an image for themselves through sheer hard work and dedication. That is what makes them ‘super-beings’.
On facing the camera for the first time? I am camera-friendly. During my childhood, I used to leave my hair open and dance like Karisma and Kajol. I was fondly called ‘the laughing Buddha’ in my family.
Tell us about your modelling career. After the pageant, I got a couple of modelling offers in Canada. But I shifted to India for a brighter prospect. I did nearly 50 ads of the top-notch brands in six months.
You were crowned Miss Personality South Asia Canada in 2013. Tell us about it. That made me realise that I am cut out for this industry. I used to look like a tomboy, but the team groomed me into a glamourous girl. The audience cheered me till the end.
Your strength & weakness… My strength is my unfaltering dedication. If I have decided to pursue anything, I will give it my best shot. I don’t have the ‘let me at least try it out’ trait in me. Either I will give it
Which of your roles is closest to your heart? All of them! All my projects are like my babies. But yes, the most challenging role was my character in Raja The Great. I played a depressed girl who has given up on life.
How do you prepare for your roles? I sit with my director and try to understand his expectations. Since, he is the captain of the ship, he knows the best. I also discuss with my designer to create that perfect look. I make sure that the audience gets to see a ‘new Mehreen’ every time I appear on screen.
Describe your acting style. I don’t have any style as such. An actor should be able to do justice to whatever role she or he is given. I don’t want to stereotype myself in one particular kind or genre.
FORTE
Did your parents accept your choice? Yes, my mother has always supported my brother and me. She says, “Follow your passion. You are the best judge. If you feel what you are doing is right, keep going. Don’t bother about what others say.”
Your brother, Gurfateh is a model and an actor. Do you discuss projects with him? Yes, I do take his input but I take the final decision. That is how I am. I ask everybody for an opinion but then I do what I feel is right.

How did designing happen? I am always fascinated by colours and craft. The process of trying to create something new attracted me. That was what motivated me to study fashion designing at NIFT. My ability to translate the clients’ thoughts into reality is what makes the whole process and the efforts worthwhile. Having a meaningful discussion with the client about their dream dress and the process of taking it from concept stage to a finished garment is very gratifying. I feel blessed to witness my client’s imagination coming true in designs.
How do you define fashion? Being able to reflect your true personality & with your style. Skills needed to be a designer? A creative mind, imagination, market awareness and the ability to turn thoughts into reality. No point in having designs on mind. They need to be translated into designs without comprising on quality at any level. Immaculate stitch and execution are crucial. Formal education needed? It certainly helps the newcomers. Upon that you build your skills.
What is your personal style? It is quite minimalist when it comes to my dressing and hair. I like layering the
What is your USP? My garments can be cherished for life. Each design of Ideebs has its own tale to tell and speaks for itself. We are experts in custom designing and help our clients make garments suiting their personality. What is your strength/weakness? My strength - I give my best and only the best in whatever I do. I am very positive and hard working. However, sometimes I am shy and find it hard to open up and make a conversation. Maybe that is my weakness.
What are the trends in London? I will talk briefly on bridal genre, as it is mostly peplum tops with uneven hemline with lehengas, jacket with tail. For the bridesmaid, it is fitted pants with knee length tops.
Describe yourself in four words. Shy, quiet, homely and hardworking.

How similar/different are the markets in Hyderabad and London? London clients come with different ideas and concepts. They plan in advance and allow lots of customisation. It is not so in Hyderabad. We will be changing the trends and traits of retail business in Hyderabad very soon. I am confident about it because the brand received amazing reviews for customisation and designing skills in the city. I believe this luxury was not available to clients here earlier.
If there was one thing you could change about your field of work – what would it be and why? That would be the exploitation of poor people in the fashion industry.
MY CLIENT’S IMAGINATION COMING TRUE IN
Five years from now? Ideebs will become synonymous with Indian couture bridal garments.
dress. Mostly it is plain in blues or black. I should be comfortable in what I wear. You cannot look nice and not be comfortable.
MY DESIGNS.
Let us talk about your take on replicas – what are your views on ethics? The practice of replicating original designs hampers creativity and talent. We as the community and compatriots should discourage this unhealthy practice. People, instead of spending their time and energy on plagiarism, should indulge in creative pursuits. I am sure that would help them come out with better and beautiful designs and scale great heights.
What is the biggest turning point? My moving to London! I could do a ‘before-after’ in my life. You see life in a different light when you are in a new place. I have studied different cultures during my stay there. Travelling helps you broaden your mental horizon.
I FEEL BLESSED AND IT IS BLISS TO WITNESS
How do you know the latest trends? I spend a lot of time researching and analysing trends on social media. My work and family take me to different places. This helps me gain insights into the trends going on in different countries.

How did you get into this field? Life has its own way of telling you what to do with yourself. People end up finding their own fields eventually. Even for me, it all happened organically, though gradually. It all started with me dealing with land transactions and then one step led to another. Before I knew what was really happening, I had opportunities
coming my way and I ended up getting into construction. What changes you have seen in this line over the years? Ten years is a long time and change is bound to happen. Thankfully, the changes are only for the better when it comes to any growing industry or line or work. These days, people are well aware of various facets of
this field. Hence, they are very careful in their choices. This naturally results in better quality of work. When you know your buyer wants nothing but the best and there is tough competition out there – you end up offering better than the best. Clients now demand a certain standard of living and we are determined to offer it and will not compromise on quality at any cost.
For us, each project is a blend of contemporary residential space and state-of-the-art amenities that define today’s living standards. We also run our business on principles of transparency and trust. Our team consists of skilled and efficient members, managing various departments such as business strategy, research and development, engineering, marketing, finance, customer service, sales & quality control with extraordinary finesse. We started with small projects of 30,000 sq.ft. and will complete one million sq.ft. by next year.
What is that one factor that sets you apart from the others? We give something which is not given by other builders such as home automation and advance security systems. What are some of the successful projects you have done before? Daredia's Gold Leaf, Daredia's Gold Stone, Daredia's Sky Garden and Daredia’s Urban Ville occupy the top of the list. What are you working on currently? We are coming up with three new projects admeasuring approximately 1/2 million square feet. The project will start next month. What has been the biggest moment? Recently we named a road after my family name. That is a memorable moment. What all aspects do you look into? I look into the designing aesthetics and convenience for customers who come to us with varied tastes.
Who designs your projects? Our structural designer is Zaki Associates. Their team handles all our designing. Do you always meet your deadlines? This is one thing I take immense pride in. Our team has always delivered goods on time and we vow to continue the tradition. Who does your branding? The Art Department in Banjara Hills. How is your safety record? Safety is our priority. We keep our 100% focus on it. This trade is all about building homes for people. Providing a safe haven has to be the top on the priority list. How do you ensure basic amenities for your residents? We provide water and power backups which, I feel, are absolutely basic. We also choose prime locations that are close to good schools, hospitals and malls. We provide gyms, jogger’s tracks and sports arenas so that our clients follow a healthy regimen. Who are your suppliers? Brands like UltraTech, Lafarge, Asian Paint, Godrej, Birla Group are a few of our suppliers.
What all do you offer? We are into the construction of two bedroom to four bedroom residential apartments and commercial spaces.
What are your basic rules? Our primary objective is to keep our clients happy and that we do by giving them the best. This includes on time delivery, quality of work and attention to the minutest details.
“
What do you specialise in? Our USP is giving homes with top-notch amenities.
BEFORE I KNEW WHAT WAS HAPPENING, I HAD OPPORTUNITIES COMING MY WAY AND I ENDED UP GETTING INTO CONSTRUCTION.
Tell us about your firm Daredia Constructions... Daredia Constructions is an ISO 9001:2008 certified company. We are one of the most trustworthy names in the construction business, both in residential and commercial segments. We are highly acknowledged for attention to project quality and architectural detail. We offer premium housing options like villas, apartments and more.
red | november 2017 | 27
What about finishings? We have our in-house team for that, which has been handpicked carefully. Since, we refuse to compromise on any aspect of construction and are keen on giving a perfect residence to our customer, we don’t ignore any facet – big or small.
PERSONAL FRONT What else interests you? I absolutely enjoy travelling. How do you balance work with family? Taking out enough time for the family is certainly the biggest challenge. But I have set myself fixed work timing. How would you like to spend a holiday? I prefer going abroad.
What are your future goals? It is always good to have high goals as it gives you enough reason to wake up and push yourself to work better. I have set an ambitious target and want to complete two million square feet before the year 2020.
By what motto do you live? Live the good life. Anything you like to change in your life? I am more than happy the way I am. I enjoy my life and am thankful to the Almighty. One superpower you like to have... I would want to save Earth from warming to preserve it for our future generations.

ringing the best in the world is The
Diamond Store By Chandubhai (Unit of
Hallmark Jewellers), Asia’s first
hallmark certified jewellery manufacturer. Headed by Kotti Srikanth, son of Chandubhai (Chandraprakash), this store offers a diverse collection of classy, elegant diamond jewellery, handcrafted to suit both the ethnic and contemporary tastes. We speak to the men representing two generations and find out how they turn their outlet as the hot spot for jewellery lovers.
Chadubhai makes the opening remarks… My father, the late Mr.Kishtaiah, was in the jewellery business. I joined him in 1973 at the age of 13. To start with, I handled sales & gradually learnt to evaluate jewellery. In 1982, I set up my firm Chanubhai Jewellers and in a decade’s time we started exporting. Later, I launched one of the largest jewellery showrooms in the twin cities at Ameerpet in 1997. Achievements When I entered the scene, there was ambiguity with 19k gold jewellery being passed off as 22k. There was no quality control and the customer had no way to judge the genuineness. red | november 2017 | 30
I set out with a dream to give quality jewellery to the customer, but did not know how to go about it. In 1996, I wrote to Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India’s National Standard Body urging them to introduce some kind of quality control and certification of gold jewellery. I later came to know that this was a good four years before BIS even thought of introducing Hallmark. In April 2000, BIS implemented the Hallmark Scheme with support from the World Gold Council. I established a full-fledged quality control laboratory to obtain the first license as Hallmark Certified Gold Jewellery Manufacturer. In 2009, under supervision of Srikanth we opened another store at Abids in the name of Hallmark Jewellers.
Challenges Even after introduction of the BIS Hallmarking, it took more than a decade for the common man to understand and embrace it. Today it is about diamond quality. Gold has only one variable to be certified- purity, whereas in diamond colour, clarity, cut, polish symmetry have to be ascertained. The certificate speaks about colour and clarity only. Other factors that influence the price are to be noted by us. USP Sincerity towards my business. I have gained knowledge through experience & used it for the benefit of customers. I have gained their trust by providing quality product and service at very
reasonable prices. My goodwill is my asset. SRIKANTH’S VERSION The Beginning I am a Gemvision Matrix Cad Designing professional qualified from Indian Institute of Jewellery Mumbai and a GIA certified Diamond Graduate. I was so fascinated by jewellery that I used to go to the shop straight from school and would assist my father. That was the time we used to get jewellery customised from workers. There were occasions when the final product did not meet our expectations. That sowed a seed of desire in me to be a manufacturer. Equipped with all the knowledge, I set up the city’s first CAD CAM based jewellery manufacturing unit in Abids- Hallmark Jewellers. The Diamond Store My father enjoys retail business and has spent more than three decades in it whereas I was into manufacturing & wholesaling. So we decided to put together the best of our abilities and The Diamond Store by Chandubhai, with an in-house manufacturing unit, was born. We decided to sell only diamond jewellery as we were well-versed with all the nuances of this segment. Our customers fondly call my father Chandubhai and hence the name. His perseverance and persistence to deliver top-notch quality and timely services has helped us grow to this height.
crafted, which is a perfect blend of modern and ageold mystique. Our pieces are so classy and versatile that they make your peers envious and you the showstopper of any occasion. The cherry on the cake is that we have everything- casual, formal, bridal or ethnic. In the Collection We offer an exquisite collection of traditional South Indian and North Indian jewellery apt for any event, be it weddings or cocktail parties. We stock necklace sets, pendants, mang tikkas, bangles, bracelets, jhumkis, vaddanams, vankis, interchangeable chokers, etc. We have office wear and stunning accessories for both men and women. Our solitaire rings and studs are just to die for.
“
OUR PIECES ARE SO CLASSY AND VERSATILE THAT THEY MAKE YOUR PEERS ENVIOUS AND YOU THE SHOW-STOPPER OF ANY OCCASION.
Customisation Well, that is our specialisation. We have in-house designers who understand the customers’ concept. Once the pencil drawing is finalised, it goes to the
manufacturing unit. And voila, we create that perfect piece. USP Each and every piece of our collection is duly certified by International Gemological Labs. We offer excellent craftsmanship and high quality standards. We are known for our transparency. Expansion Plans We have plans to expand across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, in a phased manner. Standards Every parcel we get is checked for CVD or synthetic diamonds. Then they are sorted out as per our quality standards. Only those pieces that pass these checks go for manufacturing. We have strict checks at each and every stage of the process. Inspiration My father. He motivates me at every step. I aspire to be like him. Definition of Success Truth and transparency are the pillars of my strength. This is what I inherited from my father. Juggling Roles It feels great to be able to spend quality time with my family. I have two sons Hrishikesh and Shivesh and I try to spend as much time as possible with them. Philosophy Top-priority is given to customers to win their trust and patronage. We give importance to the quality of our products and service and also ensure that our customers are well informed of all the diamond detail we offer them.

KEEPING THE FAMILY FLAG FLYING By Anahita Ahuja
Family Business Carrying forth a legacy in itself is challenging. Our elders taught us that every single day is a new day and learning never ends. Years of experience and customer interaction have bought us here. We feel proud when a client recalls some fond memories at the counter. Choice I was always the black sheep of my family. I never dreamt that I would join retail business one fine day. I was successful in my own event company which I ran along with a friend. But he suddenly packed his bags and headed to the US, leaving me with no option but to look up to my father. He offered to train me in the family business. It turned out to be the best decision. I joined family business in 1997 and sessions of

rigorous training continued till 2003. My father passed away in 2006 when I was barely 28. I had to take this huge responsibility on my shoulders. With God’s grace, things fell in place. Guidance From Elders My elders always had a sharp eye for good merchandise. They always stressed- “Quality comes for a price.” You may take some short cut for success but that would be short lived too. Hence the maxim- There is no shortcut to success- remains etched in my mind. Our name has become synonymous with quality and we are proud to keep it that way. Changes Times have changed but the values have not. It is just the mold that is adapting to changes as no one wants to look outdated. Technology
has an upper hand in development today and we are working with it. Strategies It is like a theory of evolution. We have to evolve to fit the market demands. The looks, merchandise, strengths, weaknesses, etc. - has to be reworked upon. We are here to meet the client’s demands. We do it with all pleasure. Expansion We have three stores – one in Abids and two at Banjara Hills, out of which one store Azira is dedicated to custom designed jewellery. Pros and Cons Everything looks beautiful from a distance. It has become a tough task to handle retail business because of many unforeseen changes occurring.

Distractors may call it an effort to impress the delegates, including Ivanka Trump, attending the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, but the initiative to get the beggars off the streets deserves a pat. Besides shifting hundreds of homeless to shelters, the government is offering a reward of Rs.500 to those who come up with information about the beggars. The new scheme, coming into vogue on 1st December, goes to prove that the ban is not just a temporary measure to earn a ‘clean chit’ from visiting dignitaries, but a permanent step.
