GOOD RESPONSE TO HEALTH CAMP Sanskriti, an NGO, organised a 10-day Acupressure and Sujok therapy camp recently at Royal Vishakha Beach Guest House. The camp was conducted by Dr.Shiva Kumar Tiwari, a renowned Sujok specialist from Chandigarh. More than 100 patients were beneďŹ tted from this camp, getting treatment for back ache, arthritis, stomach disorder, knee pain, diabetes and hyper tension. The white card holders were treated free. The NGO has been helping the underprivileged women and children with health issues, especially in the cases of heart surgeries for the kids. KITE THEME TAKES EVENT TO A NEW HEIGHT Sticking to the Kankatala tradition, the event had all the ingredients of Sankranti – bhogi manta, decorated basavanna, rangolis, breathtakingly decked up pooja mandir and a wide variety of Telugu delicacies. Hostess Shilpa crafted the event around the kites. Kites were reected at every nook and corner- right from the invitation card to the picture booth to the rangoli drawn in the mandir. ping a certain film star is nothing new because millions of fans all over the world do it, day in and day out. If one imitates the hair style of the demigod, the other copies the star’s dress. But one seldom sees a fan like Madhu Tugnait. She was not just inspired by Nargis Dutt, who worked for spastic children, but followed the actors’ footsteps making a unique welfare activity her life’s mission. Displaying rare tenacity and temerity, she left a well established enterprise in a comfortable urban surrounding to embrace the serenity of a village where she tends 15 differently abled destitute children. If she has built a cosy and compassionate nest for these homeless, she has also created a world of goodwill for herself. Here she is talking of her life and her work...

Madhu Tugnait The beginning Married to Captain Pradeep Tugnait at an early age, I moved to Mumbai. Finding a lot of time on my hands, I went to Nargis Dutt’s School for Spastic Children to volunteer. She asked me to spend a few minutes with the children. The scene I witnessed overwhelmed me-some kids were having fits and some were drooling. My belief that I was strong enough for this role was shattered to pieces. Perhaps that was the time the real seed for welfare activities was sown in my mind. The Vizag Call Years later when I shifted to Vizag, I had close encounters with a few orphans. One was suffering from convulsions and yet he had to work to earn his meal. stepmother inflicted on him. These meetings rekindled the desire in me to do something for the underdog. Stint with BCT I was running a boutique, ‘Femme Fatale’ in the city. We were using the paper bags made by the inmates of a blind school. Somewhere around that time, Dr.B.V.Parameswara Rao of Bhagavatula Charitable Trust (BCT) was looking for a designer who could help them in promoting ‘khadi’. Thus, started my six-year journey with the BCT, during which I worked for the khadi weavers, trained women and children in sewing, displayed their collections at exhibitions in Chennai and Hyderabad. This sparked a desire in me to provide a facility for the specially challenged. I also resolved to give them a warm home, not just a run-of-the mill shelter.

First Move I sold half of my jewellery and my plot in Pune to buy land in Kondakarla Ava to build Icha Foundation. Then, I approached the Women and Child Care Centre to take in at least a few children to start with. I was offered three acutely disabled kids. They won me over, flashing beautiful smiles as I took them in my arms. Within a year, I got five children under my wings Mahesh, Alka, Sai, Teja and Rani. Name & Location Every child nurses a desire (Icha) that someday it will have a family, hence the name. I chose Kondakarla Ava to keep the kids away from the pollution and nurture them in serene environs. In case of an emergency, we have doctors at Anakapalle with whom we have a tie-up and it is a 15-minute ride from our foundation.

Routine I integrated two kinds of kids- some with minor disabilities and others who are severely disabled. The former group develops compassion and volunteers to help out the lesser blessed ones in their daily activities. The latter are motivated by these helpers. There is no hierarchy here and all of us have our roles to play. Seven children from our foundation go to normal schools. We also set up a special education centre for the acutely handicapped. A physiotherapist from Anakapalle attends to the children on a daily basis. Our multi-cuisine kitchen serves them, dishing out a wide variety of delicacies. So, they get holistic care. Children’s Tomorrow I can’t say anything. It all depends on the treatment they get and how they react to it. Growth becomes difficult,

once the child stops cooperating. That is something we have no control over. Bias I believe that every child is born with a purpose. Even the parents have no right to abandon them just because they are different. Give them love and care, you will see a tremendous improvement in them. These children are very creative from within. We have to tap that and assist them to develop in those lines. Motivation The children at the foundation motivate me and give me the energy to work. Unlike the normal ones, they are not demanding and are happy with small things given to them. I am happy just being around them. The Right Charity Donors should study the NGO and

everything that goes with it. There are various trusted CSR wings of big firms through which one reach the help to the right people. Patron’s Role Patrons, especially celebrities have a great role to play. Once these stars get involved, the right messages can be disseminated even in the remotest corners of the world. Advice The mindset that we require in this field is different. You need to be extremely dedicated and strong headed. You should carry the feeling of ‘seva’ all through. Don’t join any social cause just to add a point to your resume. Start with baby steps – adopt a stray dog or educate a child. Have compassion and never let go of your human values.

The Switch After obtaining my MBA degree from GITAM University, I started working in the telecom industry, then moved to financial services and later to ICICI group. Once the babies arrived, I decided to take a break and look after them. However, the home walls could not arrest me for long. From a regional head leading the 400-strong team spread over four states to a full time mom was overwhelming for me. I wanted to go back to my career. But the entrepreneur inside was nagging me to start something on my own, so that I could live life on my terms. There are days that involve only research and networking with exhibitors. When we are nearing the exhibition we are busy working details like designs, promotions and logistics. Finally, there are those nerve racking, hectic days when the exhibition is on.

Success Ingredients You need to be on your toes all the time. Knowledge about current trends, a strong fashion sense and efficient organisational skills are required. Training I don't think there is any text-book for this. Even as a child, when ever there was a party at home, my mom would ask me to tidy up the house. I would love rearranging cushions, moving the curios, doing the flowers and setting the dinner table. All that just came naturally to me. I guess it is a lot more about passion than training. said, "I knew you were capable but this is amazing!" Tip to New Players My advice to new entrepreneurs, especially to women is - we have the potential, people skill as well as multi-tasking ability. Expansion Our next priority was to establish a backup for Vizag office in Bengaluru to increase our visibility. However, it did not go as expected because of the high level of attrition. Challenges I was moving to India in 2003 after staying for nearly eight years in the States. It was tough for me to accept and adjust here as I faced a culture shock at working environments in Bengaluru. Getting my daughter adjusted here was equally tough. The Hudhud cyclone was a major physical setback for our company and us. The crashed glass panel damaged most of our computers, desks and ceiling. Fearing that we would lose out on a lot of clients who were apprehensive of our recovery pace, we pushed ourselves beyond the limits, with primary focus on the finicky clients.

We were up and running by the third day. This certainly surprised our clients and gave us the confidence. Beliefs & Values Be optimistic and sincere in whatever you do. Risks & Sacrifices I am a single parent and the only bread earner. I was worried about the viability of the venture. But John assured me that he would take care of things in case of any eventuality. I couldn’t spend much time with my daughter Deepika, who would often be frustrated and complained about it. My first plan of action was to narrow down the business into an exclusive cooling appliance store. To start with, I ended the company’s association with the distribution of agricultural products as they were not yielding

any profits. It was a tad difficult as the companies were there with us since the inception of the firm. Management Style My father gave me only one mantra – believe in your product to market it efficiently. I live by this rule till date. First Step Kavita: My father Dr.K.Nageswara Rao runs the ABC Hospital, where I take care of the ICU. I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and create an identity for myself. Somewhere, I also realised that the quality of laundry in the hospital was pathetic. I used to discuss this with Harita, my husband’s cousin. Harita: After marriage with Kalyan, a civil design engineer, I moved to Australia. There, I volunteered for an age care facility called Karinya Homes, managing their kitchen and the laundry department. I learnt the nuances of fine laundry. We had a set process where the laundry would come in colour coded bags to separate the infected ones from the non-infected ones. I used to share my knowledge with Kavita who would often talk of the shoddy way we deal with our clothes. K: Learning from Harita’s experience and after extensive research, we set up this facility. Building something from the scratch is always exciting.

Hurdles K: The banks refused to support us as they were skeptical about re-payment. So, we had to utilise our savings. The locals were not ready to lease their premises for such a concept. However, a retired doctor obliged us. We went for the renovation of the place. H: We had neighbours barging in, with complaints that our machines would dry up the bore-wells. As we were short of hands, we would even wash, count and even deliver the clothes. Some clients were unhappy about inclusion of taxes in the bills.

Faux Pas K: We were unaware of the importance of setting aside some working capital. H: In our next venture, we shall not repeat this blunder. Response H: Some are appreciative. But some need to be told about the difference between dry-cleaning and wet-washing. K: There are dhobis at every nook and cranny. We naturally cannot keep our cost on par with them as our process is scientific. Kin Facility K: Hard to believe, but there is this XXY chromosome in us. We could not have done it without each other. H: We can throw tantrums at each other!! If I don’t want to address an issue, I vanish behind the machines, leaving Kavita to handle it. If the Chips are Down... H: If one of us is in blues, the other is ready with sunshine. K: ‘Never say die’ attitude is in our blood. We just dive into any task and are ready for battle. Rewarding Moment H: I don’t think we can say that it is a stupendous success. We have managed and to some extent, we could change the

people’s perception of laundry. K: Every day brings in a new challenge and the learning process goes on. Employee Loyalty K: A saying goes- pay peanuts and you will get monkeys. We pay and look after our staff well. As a doctor, I take care of the medical needs of their families. H: We even entice them with small perks like biryani parties. Right from the security guard to the driver, we want woman in every post. Bad Bargains H: Many times! We let go of customers who are hard to please. There are some who don’t pay at all. The Journey My father always believed in women empowerment and never stopped us from chasing our dreams or even exploring new paths. As a teenager, I rode a bullet and was all set to open a computer institute, which only goes to prove that the streak of adventure has been with me right from that time. I got married and shifted to Vizag. My husband Ravi was a distributor of imported chocolates in the region and was catering to malls, hotels, etc. As a chocolate-lover, I instantly spotted a business opportunity in the venture. Both my parents-in-law and Ravi were so sold on the concept that they wrapped up their other businesses in hardware to focus on this field.

Smooth Launch The scene at that time was totally to my advantage. I was unrivaled in this genre with no one else dealing with such a wide range of premium products. Demand for the finest in chocolates started pouring in from many people. We were more than willing to fill the gap. That was how, TASTE BUDS came into existence, brining in the overseas taste. The Difference People often used to question us about the stork variation in the prices of desi dairy milk chocolate and the imported one. The cocoa content in the imported ones are much higher compared to the ones made in India. Even the other ingredients that go into the products are of superior quality. One bite is enough to make you realise the difference.

Response Awesome and overwhelming! You never see people leaving our store empty-handed. They are amazed by the vast collection on our counters. Keeping up our side of the bargain, we go all out to meet their demands. The customersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; appreciation always keeps us motivated. Wastage There are areas like transportation, where we have no control. For example, if a bottle breaks in a carton, the entire package goes in waste as the leakage may spoil the labels on the other bottles. Obviously, we cannot display the messy ones on our counters.

Rules to Follow We have to follow certain set of rules and methods when it comes to disposing of the damaged items. In case of an expired product, we need to empty the packet, dump it into proper bags and dispose it in the specific dump yards. Kin Facility For a woman coming from a typical Marwari family, it is certainly difficult to break the barriers and run a business. However, over a period of time, I gained the trust of my family and now they are all supportive. Not only my father-in-law Mr.Raj Karan Choraria, but also my daughters Reeth and Riya help me at the store. They manage it in my absence. Ravi is my best friend and my strength. Besides discussing the problems, we seek advice from each other on all

business matters. Three minds are any day better than one. A healthy interaction brings out new ideas and concepts that boost the trade prospects. Opinions of all is taken into consideration before a decision is made.

urmeet Kohli certainly poses a challenge to journos, leaving them wondering under what genre should one place her - social worker; trainer of soft skills, personality development and communication; crusader for social causes; political activist; socialite; columnist; super chef; accomplished dress designer; a yoga exponent; perfect mother or a successful homemaker. With her fingers in one too many pies, one seldom sees Gurmeet (Guddo for her innumerable friends) taking a breather. She is on the constant move from one errand to the other. Did you find her walking from Seethammadhara to TSR complex? Nothing new, that is how she squeezes in 30 minutes of health walk amidst her exhaustive routine. We rope her in for an interview, snatching a few moments of her at The Institute of Chartered Accounts of India where she teaches and a few minutes at the couselling session of professionals at the Public Library.

Journey When I turn back the pages of my life, I feel indebted to my parents, the late Mr.Mohinder Singh and the late Mrs.Rajinder Kaur Bedi, for the upbringing they gave me. We grew up in a joint family that adhered to high moral values. Being an all rounder in debates, quiz and essay competitions, I always had a flair for writing. My first write up appeared in the school magazine when I was in 7th standard. I took up mainstream writing when I won the first prize for my poetry. Life was a bed of roses until I lost my father. Though I always imagined myself in business suits, I got married and turned into a docile daughter-in-law. My dreams took a backseat. The red | february 2017 | 66

liberated girl turned into a multi tasking home maker. I was totally immersed in taking care of my husband Jaspal Singh (Tony), my parents-in-law and my children, Tina and Poojan. Career Amidst all this, I never left the path of academics; I obtained a Masters Degree in Literature. I got certified by ETS for TOEFL, CELTA by British Council for IELTS and NeuroLinguistic Programming. After a stint with Interface, an overseas Australian firm, I started my own educational consultancy and coaching centre. Then came my tryst with Deccan Chronicle. I ran a regular column ‘Matter of Faith’ for the daily. It was gratifying to hear that my articles helped many students to come out of their depression. That was how

counselling students became my passion. My freelancing projects took me to various educational institutions, where I helped the students on their soft skills and imparted the campus recruitment training. Hurdles The going definitely gets tough at times and there are always hiccups to deal with. To ensure smooth sailing, one has to anchor one’s strength. Packed days with clash of training programmes, social work and filial responsibilities lead to a lot of stress- I believe in pulling through with finesse. Motivation My mother’s words, “do good and expect nothing in return” inspire me. Her trust in me has always pushed me beyond the limits to achieve my goals.

Social Issues My mother used to take care of the poor and provide homeopathy treatments to them. I have inherited this streak and urge to do something for the people in distress from her. In fact, it was the service after the Hudhud disaster that put me on the path of welfare activities. My training programme Shakti on women empowerment is for the Navy employees. Issues that are always close to my heart are sexual abuse, domestic violence, genital and menstrual hygiene, etc. Though I am associated with NGOs like Global Support Organisation and Rohit Memorial Trust (RMT), I offer service to other non-profit bodies. We have done a lot of projects like Gyan Lakshmi, Say No to Plastics, mentoring girls through RMT during the last year. Man’s World Intellect has no gender. Women wear pants now. It is no more a man’s world.

It reminds me of James Brown’s song – This is a man’s world......But it would be nothing without a woman or a girl. THE SURVIVOR AND HER STRUGGLE

espite all those tall talks of uplifting them socially and politically, and giving them due representation, women have largely remained either tools or surrogates of their male partners. All the attempts to find a way to encourage women to take up leadership seem to remain just an eyewash. Here is Polasapalli Saroja Cherian, who won the rare honour of being the youngest Mayor in the country and the first Mayor of Kakinada Corporation. She struggled through her term to establish her credentials. “It was nothing short of hurdle race. Anyway, I always strive to be ahead, whatever may be the challenge,” says she. Of course, she acknowledges the help and support she got from the former CM, N.Kiran Kumar Reddy and the former MP, G.V.Harsha Kumar. Saroja and her husband Cherian Srinivasa Rao, who is equally politically motivated, are throwing in their lot with these veterans in the next elections. Saroja, who was in the city for a brief visit, talks of her varied experiences.

First Mayor The Kakinada civic body gained corporation status in 2004. I had the historical honour of heading it. My stint was tempestuous with more downs than ups coming my way. I was caught in many cross-fires and ego clashes. The Beginning Hailing from Amalapuram, my father the late Mr.M.Jaganmohan served as the Munsif Magistrate. After his death, we settled in Kakinada where my mother Mrs.M.Vijaya Lakshmi took up service. Being a topper in academics (M.Sc), I was a Kuchipudi exponent. My interest in public life got a boost after I got married to Cherian, who had created ripples as a students’ leader. Issues & Improvement As I was the first time Mayor, people’s expectations ran high. Even I set out with very

lofty goals of changing the city into a veritable paradise. The city was woefully lacking in entertainment. People have to go either to the beach or to film theatres. I wanted to add a few facilities. But all my efforts were stone walled. If it was an ego issue one time, it was an ulterior motive at the other. I used to take my problems to the late Dr.Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy who used to be very supportive. I could impress upon him that the newly-born corporation needed money. He granted Rs.30 cr. We worked on the Raja Tank and Boat Club, widening roads, beautification of junctions, major flyovers, drinking water pumping, Rajiv Gruhakalpa houses with the coordination of other wings.

I formed some welfare associations in residential colonies to ease the burden of corporation in maintenance. Man’s World Every moment of my tenure, they made me feel I was on a hostile territory and every step I took was doubted and opposed. It was a saga of struggle against many mighty and powerful leaders. They used to find me too young to lead and say, “You were not even born when we entered politics and how can you tell us what to do?” Source of Strength My source of strength is my husband who stands by me like a rock. Whenever he found me in low spirits, he would pacify me saying, “Leaders like even Jayalalithaa could not

escape this. Yet, they stood their ground. To make a difference to the society, you have to pass these tests.” Even the person who proposed my name for the Mayor’s post expected me to be his stooge and couldn’t digest the fact that I had a mind of my own. Knowledge People become invincible with knowledge. I realised that I can counter any attack, if I do my home work. I studied the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Act well. Armed with this information, I would confront my opponents and would not leave them till they gave me satisfactory answers. Clashing Roles Mayor and Commissioner should function like two wheels of a cart for the smooth running of corporation. But in my case, everyone went against me. The strange thing is that even the Municipal Chairman is given more powers compared to the Mayor. They would hold the purse strings. Rs.20 lakh is nothing for big corporations like Vizag and Hyderabad, but a big deal for a place like Kakinada. It was only after some protests, we were given a paltry sum of Rs.50,000 to spend on some minor works and the Commissioner was given permission to sanction works for

Rs.10 lakh instead of Rs.20 lakh. Unforgettable Incident The last meeting I held was the most harrowing of all experiences. My term was getting over and I was dismayed that I was unable to do anything for the city. I wanted to build a major road that connects to the highway. They did everything possible on earth to stop me - right from confiscating the files to sending away the Commissioner. I stood my ground and got the resolution passed with only 1/6th of the quorum. Dreams for Tomorrow I have a natural inclination for any project or programme that augurs well for women. I also wish all the communities are treated equally, without bias. I want to establish a counselling cell for girls who are often victims of injustice in our male-dominant society. For Kakinada Underground drainage is not feasible as the city is below the sea level and there is a threat of sea water getting into the city when the tide is high. Hence, we have to mull over some alternative mechanism. We need a proper dumping yard with a facility to segregate garbage, part of which can be used for generating fuel for power plants.

Untapped Talent There is a treasure of untapped talent in the women of Kakinada. For example, there are women who make export quality coat buttons out of buffalo horns. There are others who are good at processing dry fish. These women with aspirations and leadership qualities need a bit of guidance and some financial assistance.

Starting Point Hailing from an agricultural family belonging to Mahendravada of Anaparti Mandal in East Godavari district, Mr.Venkata Reddy wanted to explore the world by treading a completely new path. “After obtaining a M.A degree, I wanted to go either for teaching or civil services. Fear of likely failures made me try my hand in trade. I set off dealing with ﬁnance business and followed it up with running petrol bunks. In 2004, I entered realty sector with KVR Estates (Kayala Venkata Reddy) after due consultation with friends and partnering with some of them. As we progressed further, my family members joined in my trade.” After that there was no looking back for this enterprise that has added rich value to the landscapes of Vizag and

Vijayanagaram with their land ventures and landmark buildings. “While Vizag has always been my dream city, where I wanted to live, Vijayanagaram is my karma bhumi where I have all my major business ventures,” says Mr.Reddy. Hurdles Ask him about the hurdles he has faced in building this reputed business house, Mr.Reddy gives a stoic smile and asks back, “Is there any business which faces no hurdles and hazels? So is ours. The grit and strength of the a business man surface only if he comes out unscathed in these tests. By God’s grace and best wishes of our well-wishers, we surmount them and have reached till here.”

Secret of Success “I attribute our success to the style of working we follow. I don’t believe that success comes to you if you sit in your ivory tower, delegating duties to people on the field. All of us gather for a brief meeting in the morning at the office every day and after that you shall not find any of us here sitting in the air-conditioned comfort. We, along with our workers sweat it out on the field. At this office, we have only one person who coordinates work at various locations, besides our accountant. We have been providing livelihood to 350 people, employing them on contingent basis.” Green Commitment Coming from an agricultural background, Mr.Reddy’s commitment to environment is uninching. “I know the value of food crops. So I refuse to take agricultural lands for layouts. If we are compelled to fell 10 trees, we see to it that at least 20 of the same quality trees are planted there. In fact, all our ventures are close to the town and don’t interfere with nature.” Uniqueness “The location, our commitment to quality of work and efficient service make us stand apart from the others. Our ventures are free from legal hassles. We take responsibility of the total maintenance even after the ventures are sold. For example, our properties were damaged during Hudhud. We spent nearly Rs.40 lakh to get the infrastructure restored. We are number one in Vijayanagaram. Since we are very choosy about the location, the land value in our projects moves only upward and manifold. All our

projects get equal attention from us; hence all of them shape up in the same fashion. Last but not the least, our projects are the ground realities and true reections of the dreams we show in our brochures. There is never a deviation either in their plans or in their execution,” adds Mr.Reddy.

What is your primary focus when you are taking a wedding assignment? I always keep an eye on the couple to ensure that I don't miss any cute moments that might occur. Apart from that, I am also focusing on the family members to capture their emotions. You draw your inspiration from... Over a period of time, I have built up a large collection of photo books from around the world and constantly update the collection. The books are from a wide range of genres but all of them provide new ideas and inspirations to use during couple shoots, weddings and my documentary projects. How different are your sensibilities from the others of your ilk? I take my profession quite seriously and always want my clients to have a great and smooth experience, right from the point of first contact to final delivery. I meet important family members and most importantly, ensure timely delivery of images and albums.

How much time do you usually spend in post-production process? I aim to deliver images to the couple within two weeks after the wedding. Your favorite equipment... I have been using Canon for the past decade and plan to use them for the foreseeable future. I have a Canon 5D Mk IV with a range of prime lenses.

What is the best and worst moment you have had as a photographer? Best moment is always when the couple is immensely happy with the photos and it happens often. It feels good to have been a productive part of someone's special day. Worst moment is when I once accidentally dropped a really expensive lens during a sangeet.

Your advice to prospective customer... Communication is the key. Make sure that you understand the style of the photographer and he/she, in turn, understands your expectations. If there is one place in the world you would love to capture a wedding where would it be and why? I wish to cover a small intimate wedding in a private island. It should be a secluded atmosphere in which the couple is surrounded by close family and friends. This leads to relaxed and candid moments to capture.

Meet Dattu Khandavilli, someone whose aspiration is to cover a wedding in a way to create memories that take the couple back in time and help them witness recollections that they have missed in the "whirlwind" of the busy and an exciting day. With his photo-journalistic style, he captures the authentic expressions, activities and emotions to get the true flavour of the entire wedding. He always aims to make his client’s wedding last more than a day, through his eloquent, expressive and revealing imagery.

SHOOTING Why this genre of photography? I always wanted to do something diverse, something distinct. Hence, I chose this field. I also wanted to have a formal training. So, I went for graduation in photography. Tell us about your primary style? I enjoy designing and wedding candid photography. What is that one thing you are tired of hearing? The usual dialogue - “Aye babu, come take one photo.” What do you like about weddings? Weddings have a lot of emotions connected to them. The best part is that they are very intense and real, resulting in fantastic outputs.

How do you see a real view and conceptualise it in the reel? It is all about perspective. Different perspectives give different outputs. Best part of the day to shoot... As long as I get some good light, I am ready to shoot anytime. Favourite part of the wedding... The actual muhurat time is the best time to get amazing photographs. Once that time passes, there are mixed emotions all around. Some are relieved that the ceremony is over and they can proceed for the food. The bride’s family is teary-eyed as they know that she belongs to someone else, while the friends are busy laughing and enjoying the moments. There are expressions and shots to capture, in abundance.

What is your primary focus when you are taking up a project? As I mostly shoot candid photographs, I look out for those moments which make one say “wow”. It does not have to be a 10-minute dance video, people’s reactions to that dance are what I target. You draw your inspiration from... I would not be doing justice by taking just one name here. I have learnt and worked with so many people and everyone inspires me in some way or the other – there is always so much to look up to and learn in this field. How different are your sensibilities from the others of your ilk? I would not say I am any different from the others. The sensibilities differ from situation to situation. How much time do you spend in the post-production process? That depends on the number of pictures we click during a wedding. It is usually anywhere between 10 to 15 minutes for a set of pictures. Of course, if it is the peak season, it ends up taking a little

more time. I am very particular about the output as the pictures last for a lifetime. They define the most significant moments of the couple’s life together. Your favourite equipment… I use Nikon’s equipment, but Leica cameras are my favourite.

What advice would you give to couples looking for a photographer? I would say, plan, have a couple of meetings, give us a clear picture of what you want and let us know about your tastes. Please get into a comfort zone, communicate and we give the best shoot ever. If there was one place in the world you would love to capture a wedding, where would it be and why? Santorini - it is the perfect location for taking a picture any time. The lighting, sea and bright white paint on the houses – they just turn out to be magical. Bali would be second on the list. What is the best and worst moment you have had as a photographer? The best ones are too many to mention. The worst was when an elderly person passed away in the wedding and they had to postpone the festivities.

First is to get familiar with the family and the guests, so that they become comfortable with him. Smiling How did you get into this field? I come from a family of photographers and my father and uncles paved the way. I tried my hand at various fields like gemology and flying, but the bug of photography bit me hard and I got passionate about it. I am happy with my decision because I enjoy every bit. Tell us about your primary style… I like to tell stories with my images. My passion lies with portraits, be it of individuals or families or couples. I just love taking pictures of kids. My work portraits depict a lot of true emotions and actions. One thing you are tired of hearing... “What equipment do you use?”, “Can I know how many pixels is your

camera?”etc. I tell them that my eyes are my equipment. What do you particularly like about capturing weddings? The emotions that are displayed and the love that the families and friends emote. People turn whacky as the comfort level amongst them is high. That is one time when people listen to me for the abstract poses that I require to display my creativity. How do you see a real view and conceptualise it in the reel? There are ample opportunities to observe real life and come up with breathtaking images. I follow a lot of photographers for inspiration. The web is a fantastic place to get ideas.

What is your favourite part of the day to shoot? I am a late riser, but my best images have been the ones shot early in the morning. I feel people are at their best during this time as everyone is quite fresh and carry no baggage. What is your favourite part of the wedding ceremony? Surprisingly, it is the bidai. I just love the mixed emotions people go through at this point of time- someone is happy or someone is sad. What is your primary focus when you are taking on a wedding? I like to shoot candid pictures, so I need to be vigilant of the people’s actions and show of emotions.

I generally focus mostly on the couple as all their friends and family gather around them and give their best expressions. I do not even leave the aunts and uncles gossiping around. Where do you get inspiration from? From photographers of National Geographic- nobody shoots the way they do, whether it is far flung places or communities. The way they capture people’s emotions in the harshest of the conditions is quite commendable. How different are your sensibilities from the other photographers? I am extremely flexible. I allow other photographers to get their best shots and sometimes even help them better their lighting and craft. How much time do you usually spend in post production? Not too much. I do colour corrections and leave the originality of the picture as I am pretty confident of the work I do. Sometimes, I need to bow to the customer’s demand and make some folks look slim.

Your favourite equipment… My trustworthy Canon 1DX Mark 2, 50mm and 85mm 1.2 lenses, Imac and not to forget my super wide angle lens. Advice to couples looking for a wedding photographer... Look at their work, not their equipment. A good photographer can give you fabulous pictures even with a mobile phone. For me, expensive does not mean good. A lot of newcomers are capturing fantastic images with the most basic equipment. One place in the world you would love to capture a wedding... Macau, primarily for its proximity to India and it has everything - beaches, old forts, psychedelic lights. At the same time, I can play poker. The best and worst moment, as a wedding photographer... One of my most cherished moments was when I was called by the bride’s grandmother who told me how much she enjoyed the pictures. That was not

it. She even fed me puranpoli and blessed me. Thankfully, I have not had many worst moments but one incident was when one of the relatives of the groom started acting as if he was the God Almighty and wanted everyone to listen only to him. It was taken care of eventually. However, I don’t want to talk about the incident.

How was the experience of working with Jayam Ravi for the third time? It is amazing. I am very fond of his kids. Coincidentally, when we shot the first film Engeyum Kadhal, he had Aarav and when we shot Romeo Juliet, he had Aayan. So, I have seen his kids growing and Ravi has seen me growing as an actor. People ask us, “You both fight a lot off-screen. How does your chemistry look so sparkling on-screen? We just look at each other and say-we are both fine actors. I think we look great together and that’s what works for the film.

How did you prepare for these roles? A lot of homework goes in as far as my look is concerned. I researched for my role as a drunkard in Bogan. It was easier said than done because I had never touched alcohol in my life. I spoke to a lot of people to learn how a drunkard talks, walks and behaves. The ﬁlm starts with a 10-minute introduction scene of my drunken character and the shooting took 12-13 days. At the end, I was actually feeling high and exhausted too.

Tell us about your role as Positive Padmavati and Mahalakshmi. In Luckunnodu, the lead character Lucky (Vishnu Manchu) believes that luck never favours him. So, the only fortune in his life is Positive Padmavati. As the name suggests, she motivates him not to lose hope. In Bogan, I play a homemaker, who is in love with the hero.

The entry I still have no clue how it all started and how it worked out. I never had any auditions even when I landed my ﬁrst TV project Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand. Veteran actor Aruna Irani used to come to my mother, Dr.Mona. She spotted my pictures and requested my mother to let me portray the character Tina in DMNHC, assuring her that it would be an undersized role, but would certainly beneﬁt my career in the future. However, my role which was supposed to end in death, garnered so much popularity that Star Plus had to extend it. Mom felt that there was no stopping me now and that I should pursue it diligently. She could see that my forte was acting.

I will be marking my debut in a Malayalam film with Mohanlal. I also signed one more Tamil film. The production house has not yet made it official.

The most difficult role Every role has its own share of ups and downs. I have to change myself 360 degrees to get into a character. It is not that easy because at the end of the day I am Hansika, not Positive Padmavati or Mahalakshmi. But yes! I can say that I have given 100% to all my performances.

Area of improvisation There is no one area in particular. It is important to be updated all the time without a rigid mindset.

Acting school My childhood experience was my teacher. Hence, I don’t believe in schools. When I perform now, it is like I have been there and done that. It is a cake walk; I can perform even in my sleep. I feel that only experience can make one reach heights. You may have some falls, but how you rise is what deﬁnes your dedication.

Improvisation on the spot? Everything on the set is about improvisation-when you see your co-stars performing, the dance steps, the actions scenes, etc. You hone your skills by adding new angles. I think it is all about team work, not just a one-man or one-woman show.

How do you make time for fans? That is one place where I try to keep things very real. They want to know about my daily routine and wait for my posts. Somewhere, it makes me feel grounded and through them I come to know how they feel about my role, what should I change about myself, etc. I don’t pay much attention to trollers as they are just jobless people who want to irk you so that they can share the limelight. People who love me, I love them back.

How close are you to them? We are a closely knit family of three. Birthdays mean we have to be together and celebrate. We stand by each other’s decisions. At any given time, you can ask anyone about the other’s whereabouts and we have the answer.

Tell us about your family. I studied from the Cambridge University. My mother like I mentioned before is a dermatologist and my brother Prashant works for an advertising agency. I have a dog called Bruno.

Studying at the JNTU College of Fine Arts, he was rated as one of the top students of the university and now has over 1,000, wedding photo shoots to his credit. The man behind a million smiles, Photriya is driven by mere passion. Here we shoot questions and he answers.

How did you get into this field? Everyone is passionate about something or the other. When it comes to me, it has always been photography. I don’t think I am made to do anything but this. I am glad I followed my heart and took this line of work. I can say with pride that I am here only because of my passion for photography. Tell us about your primary style... Every photo should have an essence and that comes out clear when you capture emotions. For me, it is about getting emotions into each click as I believe that it is a beautiful way to depict feelings.

One thing you are tired of hearing... Every field has its troublesome points but that is insignificant. I honestly do not think there is anything as such that I am tired of hearing from people. What do you particularly like about photographing weddings? Weddings are extremely special and close to people’s hearts. Our good fortune is that as photographers, we can be an integral part of someone’s happiness. That is a big thrill. Besides, we even get to capture that feeling- that once-in-a lifetime moment of people- and that is what adds excitement to the whole experience.

How do you see a real view and conceptualise it in the reel? I usually do not conceptualise much and hence there are no two different views. I love what I do and maybe that is why it shows in my work. It is how you click a view that makes a difference, and not on how you visualise it. Favourite part of the day to shoot... The lighting I get plays a very important role in my work. I enjoy shooting the most in the morning hours, which are between 5.30 am to 7.30 am.

That is one place that gives you all the love vibes – sensations that I have never seen or felt in any other place. What is the best and worst moment you have had as a wedding photographer? Best part was during Ravi Pillai's daughter’s wedding. There were nearly 45,000 guests, who attended it and I captured the event from a distance of 40 meters. By the grace of God, I have not experienced anything so far that I would want to list as the worst experience.

How did you get into this field? We are three siblings who grew up in a 1 BHK house. My father Nagendra Kumar was passionate about photography to the extent that his inability to buy expensive equipment, did not deter him from pursuing it. He made his own black and white photo developing equipment. Since he did not have a dark room, he used to work at night. As a child, I used to look at the photos developing with great wonder. It was sheer magic for me! That is where my fondness and fascination for this line came from. red | february 2017 | 36

e is a candid, photojournalistic wedding photographer, who has shot more than 600 weddings across the country and abroad. Every single one of them, has given him the opportunity to do what he loves- that is to document the beauty of two people coming together and committing their lives to each other. Meet Birender Lal, someone who is obsessive about the quality of work. It is this passion that has brought him to where he is. His pictures are an epitome of perfection, excellence and each of them speaks a thousand words.

Tell us about your primary style... I would say it is abstract, fused with lots of expressions. By the end of it, the photograph speaks for itself. Things you are tired of hearing... “Can you share the raw data with us?”, “Make me look slim.” and “Please photoshop it a little bit.” What do you particularly like about wedding photography? Happy faces, reunions of families and people dressing up for the occasions (and some not dressing up at all!).

How do you see a real view and conceptualise it in the reel? I have to see a larger picture of what is expected in a split second of the shoot - whether it is the complete story, bonding, feeling of excitement or togetherness. What is your primary focus when you take up a wedding project? It is like running a super hit movie with all the moments captured in 10 minutes, which the family wants to see again and again. Weddings are already special and all charged with emotions - my job is to capture those

special moments to cherish. The albums must take the couple down the memory lane and back to the D-day. How different are your sensibilities from the others of your ilk? Each and every one has a different way of working and a different way of looking at things. It is unfair to compare. What is your role? It is like an expert consultant being hired by the family. My role is to understand their ‘said and unsaid’ expectations, advise and deliver. I can’t complain about the infrastructure or the gaps in communication. I am wholly and solely responsible for it all. How much time do you usually spend in the post-production process ? That does take time.

What advice would you give to couples looking for a photographer? They should look for a photographer who masters such candid and exclusive wedding shoots. The customer should have total faith in the photographer’s abilities. Since it is a life time event, the detailing for a photo shoot also should be appreciated and invested equally. It is as important as the other aspects like dress designing and selection, lighting, backdrops, colour combinations etc.

What is the best and worst moment you have had as a photographer? Best moment is when photography detailing is given its due in a photo shoot and is respected. Every moment is planned as per the frame. Worst moments come when people plan surprises for the bridal couple and guests, but they don’t share it with us in advance. We have to rise to the occasion and take spot decisions.

If there was one place in the world you would love to capture a wedding, where would it be and why? Europe, specifically Spain, Rome and in Asia – Bali and Thailand. The lighting, charged atmosphere, the way people enjoy life there and liveliness are very inspiring for anyone with a camera.

How did you get into this field? I started taking pictures right from the age of 19, when my uncle gave me a camera. I started clicking right from then. Eventually, when my cousin encouraged me to shoot his wedding, I realised that I was going to capture the precious moments of two families. I understood that I would be helping them make a lifetime of memories, which they can look back on and cherish. Thus, began my journey. Tell us about your primary style... My primary style is simple. I try not to overdo things in a wedding and capture the essence of the moment. One thing you are tired of hearing... “Can you photoshop and make me look thinner?” What do you like about weddings? Freezing the happiest moments of people in the form of photos and videos is a special experience in itself. My best favourite part of it is that we get an opportunity to interact with many kinds of people from across the world. Oh! and the food, of course.

How do you see a real view and conceptualise it on the reel? Being at the right place at the right time is the most crucial part of wedding photography. One has to be spontaneous and alert in order to capture candid moments. And through experience, I have learnt to be a part of these moments. I try to portray these instances in a new perspective and surprise my clients. This certainly thrills them the most. Favourite part of the day to shoot? Mornings and sunsets/sunrises. Favourite part of the wedding? My favourite part definitely is the smile on the bride’s face when they tie the knot. Bridal glow is divine. What is your primary focus when you are taking on a wedding? My primary focus is to shoot with respectable families and those who repose faith in me. You draw inspiration from... I draw my inspiration from all famous photographers. I constantly check the works of others and contemplate how I can improvise my work. In this process, I come up with many ideas.

How different are your sensibilities from the others of ilk? I take up very few selective projects and try to give my best in to every one of them. I do not want to make my art commercial. My team and I shoot as quietly as possible and in a nonintrusive manner. How much time do you usually spend for post production? I try to get it right from the moment I start shooting so that I don’t have to spend hours in post-production. Your favourite equipment... The lens matters more than the camera. I find the 35mm and 85mm perfect for my style of shooting so I use both for 90% of my work. Advice to a bridal couple looking for a photographer... People should look at the photographer’s work in different categories as well, not just the weddings he or she has shot in the past. This will help them gauge his/her ability and give a better idea of the photographer’s aesthetic sense. One place in the world you would love to capture a wedding, where would it be and why? There are a lot of amazing places around the world, I would like to shoot in. But if I had to choose one place, it would most definitely be Italy. Best and worst moment you have had as a wedding photographer? The best was when the mother of a bride told me that I made her daughter look like a princess. I have yet to encounter any bad moments.

To be honest, all the weddings are same – it is all about mehendi, engagement, haldi, wedding and reception. We know what we really need to focus on and what we do not

need to be a part of. Situations are different. It is always a surprise package, that is where the fun lies. What is your favourite part of the weddings? The fun! Weddings are a grand affair in our country where everybody is happy. It is an event where all come together, forgetting all the problems in life. Kids are enjoying themselves, the bride and the groom are happy that they are getting married and the parents are certainly on cloud nine. What is your favourite part of the wedding photography? The food! I love food and I shoot weddings so that I get to eat some amazing and yummy food.

Tell us about your primary style… I grew up in Narasaraopet and learnt my basics from a photographer there. I used to assist him in all his shoots and drew inspiration from his work. I shot a lot of portraits in natural light. Somewhere down the lane, I got interested in fashion. What is that one thing you are tired of hearing? “Which camera do you own?” Of course, I believe in having an red | february 2017 | 44

advanced gear but that is just a luxury and not a necessity for every assignment. I have a big bunch of cameras which I use as per the requirement. I don’t believe in using the most expensive camera always as every camera has its own utility. What do you particularly like about photographing weddings? A wedding is a beautiful ceremony and with its colours, fun, smiles, sweet moments, it always has a great feeling to be a part of. I feel I am fortunate enough to capture the good moments – there can be nothing better. How do you see a real view and conceptualise it in the reel? When it comes to shooting weddings, I do not conceptualise, script or tailor. I believe in capturing the reality of the moment.

What is your favourite part of the day to shoot? Sunrises and sunsets. What is your favourite part of the wedding? Every wedding is different and every tradition is different. But, that moment, right after the auspicious time when the entire family cheers in excitement, is the best. It is a mix of emotions for parents and that is something I never miss to capture. What is your primary focus when you are taking on a wedding? For me, it is not the budget or it being a starry affair. I have been there and done that from lavish decors, exotic locations, etc. These things make it look glossy.I prefer to be a part of any wedding where people in high spirits are involved.

Where do you draw your inspiration from in this field? I keep watching a lot of content online. I look up to the excellent work from every fellow photographer. Of late, a lot of youngsters have evolved and are doing an enormous job â&#x20AC;&#x201C; so I get inspired from whatever I see around. How different are your sensibilities from the others of your ilk? I come from an old school from the black and white filming to this new age digital stuff. I have an understanding of both light and technology. I make the best of all I have and I know. Since I am into shooting for advertisements, I have more expensive and advanced gear when compared to the others who only shoot weddings. The equipment and my experience give me an edge above the others.

Best is when I see my clients happy and by the grace of God, I have had it all my life. The worst is when I failed to deliver what they expected of me â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this too has happened a couple of times, but then, everything is a learning experience.

How much time do you spend in the post-production process? This is a very tricky question. It is like asking an artist how much time will he take to complete a painting. Your favourite equipment... Everything that clicks the way I want it

Meet Suman Chakravarthy and his wife Aakruti, owners of Memory Lanes Productions. Their expertise lies in discovering and documenting the moments that narrate the special moments of the bride, groom and the guests.

How did you get into this field? It is a combination of passion and serendipity. Around 2008, I picked up a small film camera lying at home and went about looking for like-minded people to shoot with. After a couple of jungle treks and a few photo-walks with Hyderabad Photography Club, I also realised that this was a hobby I wanted to pursue further. Serendipity led to shooting a friend's wedding in 2010 and soon I had requests pouring in to shoot weddings professionally. And the rest, as they say, is history. Tell us about your primary style... Candid, unobtrusive and personal. We believe every event has a soul. We capture it in such a manner that you relive every minute detail – the taste, the fragrance, the warmth and the joy, those moments brought to you.

What is that one thing you are tired of hearing over and again? We are often asked about the gear we use. I understand why people ask this, but it is important to take a step back and think. Some best photographs in the world were shot using basic gear. What do you particularly like about photographing weddings? As a team that documents weddings, we are not limited to a certain type of photography. Thankfully, we get to cover all the moments. When shooting a sangeet, we don the mantle of a concert photographer. We become a perfect combination of portrait and fashion photographers when it comes to the pre-wedding shoots of the couple. Another thing I perfectly enjoy is the way we chase the poignant

moments. Each story turns out to be totally different from the other. How do you see a real view and conceptualise it in the reel? With over six years of experience in shooting weddings, we have learned how to collaborate with the family and the other teams involved in the wedding planning (events, décor, make-up). It is important to know the family and understand what each of them is upto before the big day. Your favourite part of the wedding... I love those fleeting moments when the couple exchanges looks, those little moments of caring for each other. Weddings are times where we tend to get more emotional towards family.

What is your primary focus when you are taking on a wedding? The family and mainly the bride and the groom. It is really important for us that they are enjoying their big day as the rest falls in place. We partner with the families and all other teams who are working towards the wedding. We make sure that everything is well planned and dealt with in such a way that when the celebrations begin, only the celebration part of it remains on their mind. You draw your inspiration from... Every little thing turns into an inspiration, if you have an open mind. For us, we travel, read and attend workshops that delve into many genres of photography. All of that helps us stay relevant and leaves us inspired.

How different are your sensibilities from the others of your ilk? Invisible but on high alert! Like a fly on the wall. We are all about capturing the story without making a lot of noise. Your favourite equipmentâ&#x20AC;Ś I think this is the toughest question to answer. I love technology and manage to lay my hands on anything that comes new to the market. My last favourite was Pentax 645z, a medium format beauty that works like magic in the most difficult of light situations. What advice would you give to couples looking for a wedding photographer? Today, there are a large number of candid wedding photographers. So with all the choice, it tends to become a complicated decision. The advice we give to couples and their families is to hire only one professional team that takes care of everything seamlessly

and most importantly, hire people whose style of work you can identify with the most. One place in the world you would love to capture a wedding... Speaking for both Aakruti and I, I can say that our hearts are in a home garden. We have had the privilege of shooting some of these and I confess we choke up while watching our slideshows. What is the best and worst moment you have had as a wedding photographer? It may sound like a cliche, but it is true that our moments fluctuate with the familiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; emotions at different times of the wedding. We also share the happiness, the excitement, the butterflies and the tears.

HARVEST HAPPINESS Telangana Punjabi Sabha – Pulkari, in association with The Country Club, hosted the annual Lohri Mela to celebrate this Punjabi folk festival. ART FOR CAUSE Siri Institute of Painting, along with Siri Artists’ Welfare Association, organised an exhibition of murals and paintings of Khajuraho Temple sculptures at Muse Art Gallery in Marriott Hotel recently. The chief guest was Azmeera Chandulal, Minister for Tourism and Culture. Renowned Fashion Designer Shilpa Reddy lighted the traditional lamp declaring the exhibition open. The Guest of Honour was eminent poet and Founder and President of Rasamayi, Dr.M. K.Ramu. 20% of sale proceeds would be utilised for educating the children of poor handloom weavers.

HIGH FLY FESTIVITIES Art enthusiasts were treated to a rather offbeat art show at the Muse Art Gallery. On display were scooters, not canvases, by artist Saraswati L. Guests appreciated the new touch on the Vespas and applauded the painter. The artist had a Krishna and Radha idol perched on the scooter while the body of the scooter was painted bright with yellow leaves and other motifs. Kaali Sudheer and Vinita Surana were present.

HIGHKIGHTS Spirit of Sankranti, along with kites, was in the air. Srinivas and Prachyut hosted a fun afternoon for their friends to celebrate the festival in all its glory. The soiree that started off in the morning with everyone ying kites ended only after sunset. Spotted nursing their drinks and nibbling on the snacks, while taking part in some fun kite ying competitions, were Shazia, Samina, Abhishekh, Abhijeet, Ruchika and Alekhya. The guests dressed in their festive ﬁnery and was a treat to the eye. Matching them were the colours of the kites that went up in the sky, reecting the moods and enthusiasm of the guests.
