One can get custom-made painting as well. Art pieces of other artists also get displayed. The money earned through sale goes directly to the artist, with a little cut to the gallery. It hosts exhibitions of different artists on weekly basis and offers training classes.

FOR THE BIG APPETITE

T

he Big Fork is surely for the epicurean lot in the city of Nawabs. Spread over 750 sq yds, it changes the way Hyderabadis perceive the American cuisine. It is an amalgamation of continental, Caribbean, Persian, Mediterranean and many other cuisines from across the globe. This is because of the simple fact that there are millions of settlers from all corners of the world in the United States. The Big Fork is a contemporary American Diner offering fusion appetizers, main course and desserts. For example, the Kafta Burger here has Mediterranean avours but is an American burger. It is served with fettuccine salad with a Turkish ingredient called Sumac, imported all the way from its homeland. One cannot get a hint of the Indian spices or herbs in the dishes here. If you ask which is the best dish? We say all. Every fusion item on the menu is unique. One can nd big yummy burgers, scrumptious roulades and many more off the menu. A meal for two for the all three courses is Rs.1500. After six months, one can savour these delicacies with wine and beer. The interiors too are contemporary and ambience turns quite cosy by the night. The inner place is quite spacious with a 66-seating capacity, which glimmers brightly with the sun’s rays through the glass walls. The large walls are crammed with American vintage wall hangings about the different sauces and cheeses of the US. The outer space is lush green and has a good 60-member capacity. The most awaited part of the diner is ‘breakfast on bench’, which is soon to be launched in these gardens where one can soak up the sun while binging in. The weekends rock with open mike sessions, stand up comedy nights and live bands. Timings: 12:30 pm to 3:30pm for lunch | Ph no.: 91-9296250006

OLD WINE IN NEW BOTTLE Senior Congress leaders- former CM Kiran Kumar Reddy and the unceremoniously dropped from the party post Botsa Satyanarayana- are now looking at the BJP, which is striving to emerge as a potent alternative in the state. Citing his experience in ruling the state as the CM, Kiran wants to lead the party and wants the party to leave its ropes in his hands. If Kiran enters the BJP in a big way, Botsa may not follow the suit immediately. There is a likelihood of his sending one of his kin into the party and play an important role by proxy till he takes the ultimate plunge. A few poignant questions that arise here are - Will the BJP cadre accept the veteran Congressmen? Will the voters accept these leaders with a former Congress tag sufxed to their names? Won’t it be just the same old faces in a new party?

RUSE OR REALITY? When it is about pulling the crowd no one does it better than Pawan Kalyan. The star had entered Twitter with one lakh followers and now it is three lakh above. It has, however, raised many eyebrows in the lm fraternity as the star is not talking lms, but politics and getting responses from many top political leaders. On one hand, when it is showing the Power Star popularity among political circle, on the other there is tittletattle around the tinsel town that the star is quitting movies as soon as he completes the ongoing projects to join politics. It has become an issue to worry for many as the number one actor has turned into the lucky mascot for many lm makers to earn fat revenue. His political stint with his own party during election looks to be in hibernation mode post-election; there are speculations whether this political chirpings on the web are serious or just a publicity stunt like his party Jana Sena. KCR BAITING DANAM It is no surprise that a smooth operator like Chief Minister KCR could lure a number of leaders from other parties, especially from the Congress. But it is also said that KCR has his own compelling reasons to go after them. The CM is not only heading a new-born state but also a fairly inexperienced team which has fresh and young leaders. Realising the disadvantage of having greenhorns as his aides, KCR has been scouting around for some experienced leaders who, along with themselves, would bring political acumen to his party. It is only natural that he is looking at former minister Danam Nagender as a potential candidate. He is leaving no stone unturned to win GHMC Elections, slated for October. KCR is condent that it is possible only through the efforts of leaders like Danam. It is also said KCR is dangling the Mayoral carrot before the Congress leader who is clearly going for it. But the TRS circles are apprehensive about the entry of heavy weights and likely seniority tiffs it might spark off. They also feel that KCR should reinforce his own ock instead of using his charm and time in luring the outsiders and give chance to the youngsters in his party to prove their worth.

CIVIC POLLS, A LITMUS TEST All eyes are on the GVMC elections and Mayor’s post of all important Vizag. Had the election were held a few months ago, TDP could have encashed the credit of the Hudhud relief operation in the form of votes. But the party seemed to have dragged its feet on the issue too long, forgetting that the people’s memory is too short. Taking advantage of this gap, the YSRCP is quietly pulling up its socks to face the election. It has quickly moved its pawns, by allocating responsibilities of each ward to a prospective candidate, who is assured of a denite role in the coming civic body. The opposition parties, especially YSRCP, are highlighting the TDP’s procrastination over the capital, land acquisition issues and smart city promises. It is time TDP, which has the tradition of sitting on the nominations and messing them up in the last minute, should wake up to these ground realities. If TDP loses the GVMC it is as good as losing a major chunk of ground to the opposition.

t is yet another start-up success story that happened purely because a person had realized a need, created a solution and sold it amidst global competition. But what awards him the pioneer tag, is his courage to take the risk, condence to beat the seasoned players and his passion for innovation. Taking a diversion from a hardcore-steel business to a volatile-software realm is not a child’s play. Yet, he steeled himself to take the plunge. Mind IT; he is Mr. Murali Krishna Gannamani, MD, CEO and founder of Phoenix IT Solutions Ltd. We had the pleasure of rendezvous with him over high-tea at his swanky abode designed by his wife Vani. He shared his expert views on developing the company’s brand, the key points to attain success and why he thinks IT means ‘Innovation for better Tomorrow’!

From RAM An established businessman in steel, his father the late Mr.Gannamani Anand Rao, was the founder of Vizag Proles, Gowthami Steels and Anand Proles. Initially, Murali joined his father’s business and worked for almost a decade. “My father was a great visionary with excellent business acumen. I picked up all the required threads from him,” recollects Murali. However, steel didn’t magnetize him for long. Having a strong fascination for innovation and technology, Murali booted into IT sector and launched Phoenix in 2001. Buffering Vizag, where he has the strong lial base, became the natural choice for Phoenix. However, the city wasn’t IT-ready. “We were living close to the VSP and the locality was called VEPZ – Vizag Expo Processing Zone. That was the IT hub then which now moved to Madhurwada. My father was not very happy about my switching to IT and tried his best to pull me back to our family business and leaving Vizag was also not an option,” he recollects.

Murali acknowledges the support of his family and friends, especially the 41ers of club 87, who he considers as his extended family, in reaching his goals.

When he started his company, he realized that the power utilities were in a bad shape. With Phoenix’s Power product based solutions he could rejuvenate and make them more efcient and modern. “Thankfully today product development companies are being recognized for our contribution to the industry and of course the future potential. But, it is a tough journey. We at Phoenix IT Solutions have carefully nurtured the mPower product line for smart utilities and we are now catering to smart cities too.” Murali has been marching along meeting the fresh demands of this dynamic eld. The company is going to be re-christened as Fluent Grid. “The name would be more apt as it denes what we do today and provides us a unique positioning in the market.” Data Transfer Murali is keen on contributing towards skill development. He says, “Government has built the incubation center (start-up village), which is good. What we really need now is an ICT-shared service center. Government is doing its best to align with educational institutions to train the students. But progress cannot be made without active involvement of the industry. We should promote internship culture to mould the students. NASSCOM should also work with AICTE and state education departments to elevate the end-of-course project work from a mere formality to a real exercise in competency building and skill identication. Government must look at setting up ICT Service Centers where an entrepreneur walks in with an idea and avails shared services like coding, testing, UX design, hardware design, marketing, etc. and may be even funding. The delivery of services shall be transparent and affordable. These centers can be like malls or super markets for domain agnostic granular ICT services. Government can make it easy and affordable to people with skills to come here and offer their services without incurring the expenditure of running an ofce, something like a Rythu Bazaar or India Habitat Center.

Broad B(r)and He has been busy building the company’s campus on Hill no 2, besides having some exciting plans. “Thanks to the ‘Smart City’ concept, our cup is brimming with hope and prospects. Phoenix is working with IBM and executing country’s rst two green eld projects- one in Mumbai for Lodha groups which is building Palava city for hundred-thousand residents and another being developed in NOIDA. We are providing the technological solutions,” briefs Murali. His company is working with local government and representatives from various US organizations on similar projects. Come February, he is organizing ‘Smart Visakha Conference’ in association with the Chamber of Commerce. He aims to take up initiatives to make Vizag smarter and more livable. Words of guidance The government rightly calls IT as the ‘Sunrise Industry’ as it has generated huge revenue and employment. However, it is our country transformed into a knowledge center from an outsourcing center. “We can play a crucial role in the wave of transformation happening globally. Our PM talks of ‘make in India’, but I say we must go for ‘made in India’ as well.” “Indian products are looked down upon in the world market. One can change the perception of global clients by delivering the best. So we have to think out-of-the-box.” Stating that the responsibility lies with the budding professionals, Murali advises them, “No short-cuts. Believe in yourself, be focused. Innovation and strategies are the only way to stand out in the crowd.”

Honestly, I couldn’t have found anyone better than her. She is the balancing factor in my life.

We are witnessing proliferation of software companies especially on the cloud like Zoho, etc. Denitely the growth areas and enabling technologies are the cloud computing, bigdata analytics, machine learning and robotics. There is a dearth of talent in terms of skills. Finding the resources with the right aptitude and attitude is also tough. There is a gap in terms of graphic design and user experience specialists which is essential for product companies. The students should strive to acquire these skills as they are the need of the future. CitYzen a Joint effort

CITYZEN is the CSR initiative of Phoenix, striving to foster sustainable communities and smart city culture through technology enabled people centric initiatives and participation in areas like energy, water, sanitation, environment, public health, public transport and public safety.

“Right from the beginning we have been into CSR activities like lighting up villages in Araku, funding education etc. “It was Murali brainchild to be a pioneer and give a technical support to CSR programmes. Our teams have been working on it for the last three months to make them user-friendly. We buy themes, register ourselves. May be others have developed such apps, but we are the rst ones to provide free access along with free apps upgrades to the citizens and the government authorities,” explains Vani, Director, CitYzen. www.onevizag.org is a comprehensive participatory model for Vizagaites, providing them a platform for people to join, contribute and also connect to the Government. The key initiatives include ‘Lets Green Vizag,’ ‘Lets Clean Vizag,’ ‘Let’s Talk Vizag’ and ‘Healthy Vizag’. ‘Let’s talk’- is an open discussion forum where people give inputs and solutions. Vizagites can create an account and post their ideas that are communicated to the local leaders. Posts are reviewed by the authorities concerned. This helps them in decision-making. ‘Let’s green’ is also one of-its-kind concept in India. It assists in plantation in a planned manner; maintains the ecological biodiversity and mapping of the trees for future reference. The trees growth can also be monitored. “Along with some other voluntary groups we have planted around 50,000 trees under the Haritha Visakha drive,” states Murali. ‘Healthy Vizag’ initiative includes the ‘Red Drop’ Campaign and the ‘Lets Walk Vizag. The rst one promotes awareness and provides a platform that connects blood donors and beneciaries. ‘Let’s walk’ is an initiative to promote a healthy lifestyle and reduce pollution. Printed boards or directional signage are installed in all the locations in Vizag with QR codes. When one scans the codes with a smart phone, it gives the area map, distance covered and time taken. “Soon we will have a system in place to give inputs like how much

calories one has burnt,” briefs Vani. Clean Vizag’ can be used by the citizens to report civic issues with photographic proof. “Presently, we are focusing on the Kirlampudi layout trying to develop it as a model colony to motivate others. Besides efforts and resources, we are providing the technological platform too,” narrates Murali.

SHINY THREADS OF SUCCESS By Sumana Reddy

anoj Jethwani, as an ambitious teenager aspired to soar high in the skies as a pilot. But little did he know that he would mount a thriving clothing brand for a ight of success. However, this go-getter was off to a ying start with his rst endeavor in the retail sector called Mebaz. This most celebrated clothing brand is an exclusive ethnic fashion store, drawing patrons from all corners of the city. The business strategies chalked out by this cerebral entrepreneur was so robust that the company is progressing into a national brand.

In the 70’s his grandfather sold clothes moving on a bicycle and his father, Mr.Devanand Jethwani continued the trade in a 100sft area at Abids. This small retail outlet for men has multiplied 35 times over the years as Meena Bazaar and then stepped in the son, Manoj, only to take it to a new high. He talks, giving details of retails

EXCERPTS Early Life I was born in Hyderabad and studied in Hyderabad Public School. Later, I went to the US and pursued graduation in Finance and IT from Indiana University. I kickstarted my career in a small company called Cornerstone Information. Later, I worked in the corporate ofce of an electronic store called Bestbuy for six months, only to realise that I am not cut out for the 9.00 to 5.00 job!

long time. He made a name for himself with hard work. He even had excellent credit with many designers across the country, which is not easy to acquire in a short period of time. When I returned to Hyderabad, I wanted to capitalize on my father’s reputation. Hence I built a team of designers and merchandisers with the help of his associates and started Mebaz. After that, there was no looking back. Mebaz The retail sector is fantastic and there is an enormous potential for it in India. We started Mebaz with aim to cater to weddings and parties. I gured that weddings are the only time when people really splurge. They would not mind going above board to make the event successful. Initially, I was left all alone as my father refused to help. He wanted me to swim on my own, which I eventually did. Of course, it was an arduous and adventurous journey. Now I have the support of my brother Sagar, who is also the Co-director of Mebaz. We divided our responsibilities- he manages the women’s merchandise, the legalities and nances of the company. I deal with the men’s wear, HR and operations.

Challenges When I came back to India, I had no idea what a sari was or how it was draped. I did not even know whom to hire for a particular role. Over the years I excelled. There were even times when my bank balance was zero and I had to cut a cheque for Rs.1.5 lakh to the designers. I doubled for store manager and I used to open the Into the Business store at 10.00 am and stay till “While I was working in the US, I closing time, foregoing lunch on casually asked friends and acquaintances what they wanted to most of the days. do for a living. My R and D team is always on the lookout for new things in the market and what our competitors are doing. We go to cities like Mumbai and Dellhi to update ourselves with the latest trends. Hyderabad Market. It is a strange and a crazy market. There are garments stores everywhere, yet every store of our company does well. It is funny how everytime we open a store we think that we might not break even for a long time, but on the contrary, the store does well. There is denitely a demand for garments in every corner of the city. After state bifurcation, honestly we have seen a dip of 10-12 % in Hyderabad. But it was only a temporary phase. Our Vijayawada sales have gone up by 40%. Best Moments When I graduated with top marks and was called upon the stage to be honoured, my parents were in tears with joy. It remains etched in my memory. My marriage to Geetu and the birth of my daughter Sia are two other moments in my life that I can never forget. I was ecstatic. I never thought I could go crazy for a child like this for when I was a kid, I used to trouble all the younger kids in the house.

We have a three-year-old daughter Sia and I see a great transformation in him as she is growing.

Achievement Meena Bazaar was a traditional retail store and initially sold only fabric and the Gen-Y was looking for more ready-towear. I wanted to start a trendy showroom and tied up with many designers. Initially when we started it, we had Manish Malhotra, Tarun Tahiliani and other famed designers’ collection on the display. Later, we gured out that they were exorbitant and appealing to only 0.5% of the Hyderabad market. So we started our own line which is more economical. Opening numerable stores and managing them is surely an achievement. We transcended from the traditional retail mode to a corporate system. Professionalizing the company is my achievement.

Wilful as I am, I told him that I was not in the US to go for such trips. Now, even if I wish to, I cannot go for such expeditions. This is one thing that I always regret. Inspiration I draw inspiration from my father. He has the traditional rst hand experience in retail. He is much disciplined too. ittle did we know that he was into Telugu industry till he caught us unawares as Aparichitudu. Though it was the dubbed version of Tamil Anniyan, the film hit the jackpot and even surpassed the records of Rajinikant’s ‘Chandramukhi’ (also dubbed from Tamil) released in 2005. Since then Vikram has made into the hearts of Telugu audience and has become a household name. However ‘Cheeyan’ Vikram needs no introduction in Kollywood. His impending films including Shankar’s ‘I’ always evoke a sense of curiosity among audience. Many aspiring starlets are eager to be paired with him. He is one of the most sought after actors for many producers and directors. Though he has scaled new heights with each of his film, he remains grounded firmly. He has completed ‘I’ (Manoharudu in Telugu) and is busy with post production work. Vikram dubbed in Telugu for the first time in this flick. The star’s different make-over has amazed all. He has left behind Rajinikanth in the audience response with the trailer getting viewed 80 lakh times on the internet.

Tell us about the magnum opus ‘I’ is said to be the costliest film ever, surpassing Rajnikanth's ‘Robot’. When Shankar Sir told me the story I told him nobody has done this before and he said, ‘Yeah, nobody can do this but you. That scared me… that he had so much confidence in me and I needed to do something out of the box. The film is like ‘Aparichitudu,’ but this one is heavy duty. It is a typical Shankar film with just that much more. There are a lot of twists and turns in the story. I am sure people and actors will wonder how I did it! What about the new look you sport in I? The credit should go completely to my trainers, who have been with me for the past two years to achieve this makeover. When I am playing a character, I like to look like the character rather than like myself.

Is it true that Vikram is your screen name? I was born Kennedy. Vikram was composed by using ‘Vi’ from my father’s name, ‘K’ from Kennedy, ‘Ra’ from my mother’s name and ‘ram’ from my sun sign Aries. Tell us about your background I was born to a Christian father Albert Victor and a Hindu mother Rajeshwari in Madras, on 17 April 1966. My father, native of Paramakudi ran away from home to start a career in films. Though he did not fare well, he managed to act in supporting roles in Tamil films and television serials and this inspired me to take part in theatre lessons and become professionally trained in classical and cinema dance forms. My mother Rajeswari was a sub-collector.

Tell us about your foray into the tinsel town. “Though I had a penchant for acting in films after finishing school, my father forced me to pursue studies. While pursuing my MBA programme veteran director C.V. Sridhar approached me for a lead role in a film. However, my debut film was En Kadhal Kanmani(1990), a small budget love story featuring alongside Rekha Nambiar. Then came Sridhar’s Thanthu Vitten Ennai opposite Rohini.

How did you prepare yourself to act in Mani Rathnam’s film? When I like a role, I try to imbibe it in me to the hilt. That’s my style. Mani sir is known for doing something different. He is keen to make every frame special. Though the film failed to click, it was a unique experience for everyone. Whenever he is filming a scene, he appears like a soldier, very aggressive and ready to face the battlefield. Are you interested in doing a few more Bollywood films? After Raavan I acted in David in Hindi. I am very happy working here. It is comfortable in Tamil and I consider this as my favorable ground. I believe that understanding the director is very important. I cannot work in places where I don’t understand the language. I am happy in Tamil films. Not only in Tamil, but I am also happy doing films in Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. If at all I have to get out of these languages, then it would be for a Mani Ratnam film or a Rakesh Mehra project or Sanjay Leela Bansali’s venture. Something like Dil Chahta Hai.

“My father was a supporting actor in Tamil films. My uncle (my mother’s brother), Thyagarajan is an established director-actor in the Tamil film industry; with his son, actor Prashanth of Shankar’s Jeans’ fame, being my first cousin. It seems before you stole the hearts of Telugu audience as Remo in ‘Aparichitudu’ you had acted in Telugu films. I made foray into Telugu tinseltown with Chirunavvula Varamistava in 1993. It was a romantic film, written and directed by N. H. Chandra. I played a titular role in the film with Rani being my love interest. The other cast included Ramyakrishna and Raju Sundaram. The film was dubbed and released in Tamil as Vicky in 2002. I also acted as Akkineni Nageswar Rao’s eldest son in Bangarukutumbam. Both the films failed commercially. My other Telugu films include Adalla Mazaka and Akka! Bagunnava?

How was the experience working with Mani Rathnam in Raavan? I feel happy to work with people who are sticklers for perfection. Maniratnam sir is one such director. Coming to Raavan, the shoot was held in the dense forest of Chalakudy in Kerala. When we went to Kolkata, the dust in the place gave all of us sneeze and cough. Then we shifted to Madhya Pradesh where we had lovely climate. So we had a mix of different weather conditions just like Mani sir’s works.

Apart from Tamil and Telugu, what other language films you are into? Malayalam and Hindi. I made my debut into Malayalam with Dhruvam and Hindi with Raavan. In fact I almost signed on to appear in Mani Ratnam’s blockbuster Bombay in 1993 and featured in the initial photo shoot alongside Manisha Koirala. When Mani Ratnam sir wanted me to remove my beard for the role, I could not do so due to continuity problems with another film I had signed and hence was dropped from the project. So Vikram’s (my) loss was Aravind Swamy’s gain as the film had earned rave reviews.

What do you consider your forte? I can easily get into skin of any role that I play. Firstly I bring the looks of the character into me. When I shoot continuously, the involvement increases and at one point, I start loving my role so much and totally transform into it. When I am required to play an animal, I will also become an animal, with no emotions and no feelings just like a wooden board. I was like this while doing Pithamagan. You earned the action hero image. Your take on it I like to fight, go for battles. But the reason is also important. I don’t like to

act in soft romantic films. If running with the heroine behind the pines is the prime job, I am sorry, I am not for it. However it is surprising that I often see such movies.

pplying expertise, prociency and not to mention her passion, she has dolled up numerous famous and not-so famous faces alike. There is not a single woman in the town, who doesn’t turn to her when it comes to looking the best. She is one of Vizag’s much in-demand beauticians, K. Satya Prema, founder of Do Up Beauty Salon. With over two decades of experience in the industry, she is best known for her stunning hair styling and perfection in make-up.

Why Beauty? Why not? - She feels this is the only eld in which one can make beautiful women even more beautiful. Besides this, her penchant and passion for the industry act as driving forces. She has lived by her decision and success is the natural fallout. The ever growing list of her clientele vouches for it. Inspiration It is none other than her mother, Mrs. Surya Kumari who sowed the seed of interest in Satya. “She is my idol, especially for two reasons. Firstly, for the way she used to dress up, either it was a party, function or a regular day, she used to stand out in the crowd. Secondly, she herself is a beautician and had a salon of her own in Hyderabad. I always nursed a dream to be like her.” Vizag Bound Her roots are in Hyderabad, where she grew up, studied and spent a number of years. But now she is an out-and-out Vizagite. Ask her- how she is here, pat comes the reply with a spark in her eyes- “It’s a very crazy story.” During one of her vacations to Vizag, she was smitten by its beauty. “Just like a typical Hyderabadi, when I visited the Rushikonda beach I was completely mesmerized by the azure blue sea. Its spellbinding charm was so hypnotic that I felt this is the place I should be in and ended up settling here.” This is how she opened her salon- ‘Do Up’ near Care Hospital in the year 1995. It is beyond debate that her love for Vizag has grown over the years. She feels, the city gives her the freedom to travel a lot, which she loves to do. Being an avid reader, she can pursue this hobby as well, as she doesn’t have to run against time here. It offers her leisure and liberty to do fun activities without

compromising on her profession, which wouldn’t have been possible in other cities. Training She deed the laid-down tradition of people choosing the profession in which they are trained. A master degree holder in Advertising and Marketing, she took a distinct diversion. To familiarize herself with the technical-knowhow, she went through a six-month certicate course in one of the esteemed academies in London in 1997. Even now the process continues with she updating herself continuously. City’s Response She didn’t nd dealing with the local market as a major challenge even in the initial years. “I neither had any unrealistic demand from the city nor had any fancy to do a particular kind of work. I started taking up assignments like highend weddings and fashion shows outside Vizag. I never felt that my creative urge was not being fullled. I enjoyed the work, doing it on my own terms.”

of my husband, Ajay, is a must here. He gave me a lot of things which were not accessible for me in terms of this industry’s knowledge and otherwise. We met in Amsterdam when I was undergoing a training in Keune Academy and he was my immediate trainer. I was quite a spoiled brat, who wouldn’t work on hair and he would cut and style the hair and pass it off as my work saying, “She has done it.” That is how we bonded and got married. Even though I lost him recently, I feel he is always there for me right beside me as my mentor, guide and the love of my life. He was and he will remain to be my greatest strength.” Struggle & Solution “Angry client is never an occurrence with us. It is the one, who doesn’t want to pay, shows fury. Non-satised client is nonexistent at Do Up,” states Satya with justied pride. She also admits that key to her success is the joint effort of a good team. “Challenges are always with regard to the process of getting staff, training and retaining them. Once, they are skilled, it’s tough to retain them. Luckily for her, today she has an excellent team, which is skilled and loyal to her as well. She, as an analyst, has distinct role in the day-to-day affairs. She analyses the skin or hair of the client and guides her 12 member-team

Calling the industry a ‘customercontrolled one’, she says that here, it is not the beauty expert who has to sell a product or service, it is the taker who demands what she/he wants. It is duty of the former to give the best to the latter. This makes the whole process of acceptance simple. Family Support It was never a ‘No’ from her family for any of her ventures. This support was enough for her to march ahead. “Beyond that I didn’t really need anything else. I am a self-made person and started working right from my 10th standard. Touch wood, born on Laxmi Puja, I, perhaps, have, Her blessings. Finance has never been an issue for me. A mention

I was completely mesmerized by the azure blue sea of Vizag.

Neither I compete with others nor do I compromise on the quality of my services.

With her, it is never just about giving beauty services as she goes an extra step and helps her clients inculcate good habits for hair, skin and beauty. “I just don’t prescribe this or that treatment, but go through a thorough study, advice my clients for using home-care or in-salon products. ‘Drink a lot of water’- is what I keep preaching them, especially the younger generation. This aqua ritual is panacea for a lot of woes and it is free. Similarly, I get many customers coming to me with damaged skin. I counsel them and try to restore their condence by making them believe that skin repair treatment can bring a positive change and make things possible.” Versatility

to provide the services or use specic product line. “I can proudly say, that they are so well trained, that they can deliver with precision even if I blindfold them and ask them to work.” The companies she is tied up with like Loreal, Matrix and Schwarzkopf for hair, Jensen, Bio ingredients and Skin Miracles for skin and Sara for waxing, train her team members. It keeps her and her team updated with latest developments and trends of the industry. They are the best in the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh in waxing with Sara line of products. Reward She nds pleasure in every bit of her work - it can be talking to people or working on them and meeting their expectation. With no bias to any of her clients, she attends to each of them with the same passion and commitment. It is the small gesture like the way a client smiles after getting a new hair cut or a bride-to-be looks radiant post make-up, that gives her immense satisfaction. Forte When it is about styling hair, she is the best. From the beginning her academics are pretty strong and she has a good grip on her subject. “Even today I can proudly say I don’t have competition. Neither I compete with others nor do I compromise on the quality of my services. No matter whether a client walks-in for a simple or a complex job, I give my 100% attention to her or him. This makes a huge difference,” adds Satya.

Her talent is not restricted only to Do Up, as last year she gifted Vizagites two new unique ventures, Anahita and Party Hunterz. Anahita is a boutique of its kind that meets the need of ne art jewellery which is both traditional and trendy. It has lookalikes of latest designer trinkets by premium brands, but the price tags don’t break one’s bank balance. Party Hunterz is exclusive in its own rights. A brainchild of her husband, it made the right and best accessories for parties available at Vizag. With this store around, party at home becomes an easy job because it offers high-end themeddecorative-items in wide variety and absolute affordability. An expert advice She rmly declares- (CTM) cleansing, toning and moisturizing is a must daily ritual for everyone. With a great exposure to international beauty industry, Satya can very aptly put her nger on problem areas in India.

She says, “Though people have access to all that is needed, yet they don’t give due care to skin, hair, looks etc. due to sheer carelessness. I am gratied if I can help at least two people to change their habits towards their looks.” Future Plans Satya is going to open her rst spa in the city. Not too happy with the goings-on, she says, “The city has witnessed a boom in salons. They come with beautiful interiors and nice stock but lack technical knowhow. People come to me for repair of eyebrow, hair or skin which is damaged by some unprofessional. There is no standard institute imparting practical and correct knowledge. Answering this SOS of the city, I am opening a beauty academy. We are in talks with companies and tying up with them.” BUCKET LIST Travel all around the world. Out of seven wonders I have visited four, three more to go. I would like to serve people. Postretirement, I will shut shop and whatever gyan I have gained I would like to share. HER THOUGHTS •

Beauty means looking beautiful, having a nice smile, twinkling eyes and condence.

My prices are low compared to the rest in the market and still I provide better service.

Beauty industry is never ruled by lm industry. It is for common people, who are the game changers.

If someone can teach the budding beauticians seriously, they can go a long way.

Portr it of An Artist

“Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.” This saying is exactly the way Jaya Baheti discerns the beauty of simplicity and celebration of Indian culture and delineates in the form of her aweinspiring art. Evading the conventional professions, she aspired to be an artist all through her adolescence. Her paintings are predominantly women centric and reect her sensitivity, benevolence, sovereignty and her savoir-faire. Her work transcended boundaries and materialised as a coffee table book for the international brand, United Colours of Benetton. UCLA, Novotis Pharma, Volkswagen and Absolute are some of the renowned brands that procured her collection. Having collaborated with many cultural exchange programmes internationally, this humble artist rekindles her inner beauty at her studio, Kalakshetra, a swanky place gifted to her by her in-laws. That is where she indulges in the purity of colour. While most of the women lose interest in the career post-marriage, she took this new beginning of her life as the foundation of her long journey. With such commitment and dedication, Hyderabad had no other way but to recognize this young talent. Today the city counts her as one of the veteran artists and takes pride in taking her name. As we munched on the delectable theplas and relished the sinful rabri, (cooked by Jayaji herself), she narrated the enchanting saga of her artistic soul.

EXCERPTS Early Life I was born and brought up in Pune, in a Maheshwari family that carried the surname Mantri. Although my family was into business, I came under inuence of art and culture right from my childhood. I absorbed the ‘art’ gene from my mother, who does even the salad dressing very artistically. It is needless to say, I acquired the culture part of it from my home ground, Pune, renowned for its cultural values. In Marathi, they even call it vidya se mahir ghar, meaning the birthplace of education.

and encouraged me to pursue a career in this eld. During this time, my mother asked me if I wanted to make history or a good bank balance and I replied, “My husband will take care of my passbook and I will take care of making History.” Now my mother credits me for doing just that! (laughs) I strongly feel that anyone who is mentally strong and a balanced psychology can be creative. This is a medium through which I put across my thoughts and project my state of mind. I endeavour to pass a message of high values through my paintings. While I paint, it is like a hand dance. Marital Bliss I graduated in Arts in 1992 and in the same year I got married to Mr.Vishnudas Baheti, a businessman. I have been here in Hyderabad ever since then. My family has been a great support to me. I remember when I was in quest of art galleries in the new city, it was my brother-inlaw Vikas took me around. But to my dismay and disappointment, there were only a few galleries here. I had to give my paintings to galleries in Mumbai and Pune, associating with them for my shows. For ve years in a row, I participated in a lot of group and solo shows. I began showcasing my work in Hyderabad since 2000, following the advice of a few good friends. Initial Hiccups The duration of the course in arts I pursued is ve years. But I took eight years to complete it as I unked in my academics. I was totally depressed and it started affecting my performance.

I studied Arts in Abhinav Kala Vidyalaya, a famous art school and a branch of JJ School of Art in Pune. My thesis in the subject earned me a gold medal. I turned out to be the only student to organize a solo show during graduation. I was actively engaged with the Bombay Art Society and FX while studying. The way I kickstarted my career, I knew I never need to look back. Encounter with Art My tryst with art began when I was a child. My father had a close friend, Murali Lahoti who was a renowned international artist. Our families used to meet regularly for Chai and Nashta in the evenings. Once while I was playing in his garden I entered his studio and was astonished to see his breathtaking paintings and innumerable awards. He mainly painted animals. He named his studio Tabela, meaning a stable. That eventful evening as I was going back home, still under the spell of his magical creativity, I decided to be a painter. Inspiration I was very fascinated by Murali Lahoti’s work and I drew inspiration from him. Unlike children of my age who wanted to be doctors or engineers, I wanted to be an artist. Even as a child I was giving vent to my creativity by making beautiful cards and rangolis, besides small canvases. Fortunately, my parents spotted this talent in me

I told my mother ‘My husband will take care of my passbook and I will take care of making History.’

red | january 2015 | 85

Mr. Lahoti counselled me that I should not lose enthusiasm and be disheartened. He advised me to be strong and ght for good scores in academics. His words of encouragement worked and without wasting much time, I completed Art Teacher Diploma course in the same college. There was a time I when wondered if I would ever be an artist. My family stood by my side and rendered great emotional support. They assured me that I would be certainly successful in life! I recollect those golden words every time I hold my shows. I feel those days in college really helped me hone my skills and I started my signature work. I blossomed into an artist.

My paintings are a reflection of my mind and soul.

People who see my paintings then and now can see the same underlying message and owing essence. This is a perfect example of the saying- Failures are the stepping stones of success. Making a mark Today people have accepted me and I made a mark for myself internationally. They recognise me by my art and not the other way round. I feel proud that I could carve out my niche. All my patience paid off. Signature Style I never follow a set pattern. My paintings are a reection of my mind and soul. Whatever is on the canvas is my aura and energy. One can see the Indian culture and celebrations in my paintings. My work is a true reection of our women so I don’t see any vulgarity in portraying women in her naked beauty. Although my paintings reect Indian culture, the design is very contemporary. Turning Point I don’t believe that there is something called turning point in life. Hard work and positive deeds are what count ultimately. Be good, help people in your own way and you will be rewarded hundred times more. Maintain good credits in your karma account. If you walk on the right path, you tend to come across wonderful people who will hold your hand and guide you on. Family Front I am blessed with twins - Deven and Devesh. The boys, now 21, are currently pursuing their Aeronautical Engineering. As we did not want to admit our children in the mainstream schools, we sent them to Sloka, a school that follows the Waldorf Education system. My children joined the rst batch! They too are interested in art and love to paint and write. My only complaint is that they mess up my studio when they are at it. They add aesthetic values to everything that they do and present very creatively. I am proud that they are able to balance and sustain their interests in all three varied elds- education, creativity and business. Advice to aspirants The key to success is patience and hard work. Just as Rome was not built in one day, success too cannot be accomplished in a short period. Whatever you present in the market might not be sold. One should not get dejected if one show does not work. Keep your efforts on and try different means to work things out.

QUICK SIX What are your hobbies? Cooking and feeding family and friends Who is your favourite painter? Pablo Picasso and Jamini Roy If not an artist, what would you be? A chef. What were the best compliments you received? That I am a pure soul and a great human being. What are your strengths/weaknesses? Strength- family and friends Weakness: Food and Chai One thing about you that nobody knows? That I do not attend parties much unless it has a good cause.

Giving Back to Society adopted two students. I am imparting my knowledge, taking complete responsibility for their career in art.

KAMINENI DISPENSES

r. Kamineni Srinivas Rao, the Health Minister of Andhra Pradesh (BJP), who bends over backwards to help the destitute, pledges to develop the medical facilities and give high-quality services to the people below the poverty line. His wife Manorama chose education to empower youth, teaching in Sloka School. “We are a bunch of workhorses, declares Manorama, even as the minister turns the pages of his life story.

E X C E R P T S Give us a brief account of your early life and career I was born in Varahapatnam, educated in Eluru, Tenali and Vijayawada before joining Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada. How did you choose public life? I entered politics in 1982, when the late NTR founded TDP. I used to manage the logistics and tour arrangements of NTR. He nominated me for MLC in 1984.

I used to barely sleep. NTR used to work incessantly until his goals were achieved and always had one question to ask “What next?”. That was the most eventful phase of my life. What are the steps are you taking to improve medical facility?

After bifurcation, the medical sector became chaotic. Colleges are spread out in both the states. But medical facilities are concentrated in Hyderabad. I survived in politics only because Besides prestigious private of my service activities. I have a rapport with doctors in all the major hospitals, it has government ones hospitals, so I guide people to too. Hence my immediate task is to specialists across the state. I help build similar hospitals in Andhra many to get jobs in various elds. I Pradesh. have a good network of friends. I Arogyasree, though a popular never hankered after media scheme in villages, did not benet attention nor did I indulge in many. The health scene is dismal histrionics, accusing the fellow and there is a lot to be done. With politicians. Venkaiah Naidu lending us a Why did you turn to BJP? I joined BJP just before the last elections, at the behest of a long standing friend, Mr.Venkaiah Naidu. Despite the BJP’s marginal presence in Kaikalur, I had a landslide win and became the Health Minister. Mr.Venkaiah campaigned for me. It is beyond my comprehension how else I would have won the seat in politics which runs merely on money power. Why Politics? Politics is a means to help people. People respond to power. There are three kinds of power- industrial, nancial and political. So I had to choose the third one to appraise the ofcial machinery of people’s problems. I owe my victory to two factors - service and integrity. Perhaps I was the only politician to swear by wife and children to prove my honesty. This happened when I was wrongly blamed for corruption. I swore in the adobe of Venkateshwara, Aanjaneya and Sharadamba that I never took a single penny from anyone in my political career. That is the way I live. What was the most eventful phase of your life? When the Chaitanya Ratham campaign was re-launched my work was grueling for a month.

support from Delhi, we can envisage a healthy future. We are building up two super specialty hospitals, one in Vijayawada and the other in Ananthapur.

the high way, it is approachable for people from Vizag, Vizianagaram, East Godavari and Srikakulam. This gives us an opportunity to operate a Super Speciality Hospital in the campus. Hygiene is the first causality in our hospitals. Are there any special steps being taken to maintain the standards? Yes, there is much to be desired in this front. Hence, we decided to outsource sanitation and security services. People will surely witness a remarkable change very soon. What are the changes you have observed in politics over years? Caste plays a major role in politics today. Also, there is no such thing as a ‘long career’ in politics now, except for a few leaders who carry a reputed image like Venkaiah Naidu and Chandrababu. I can proudly say that Mr. Narendra Modi is my idol as his political acumen is astounding, unlike some leaders who lack administrative experience or even a character! I am really apprehensive of India’s future if the common man chooses just anybody as their representative. Who is your inspiration? People should remember me for my good deeds. I draw inspiration from my own actions. If one man is benetted by my help, I get inspired- a sheer altruistic pleasure.

Central Government Health Services are confined only to Hyderbad. What about those thousands of employees living across the residual Andhra Pradesh? We issued health cards to all the employees. This card lists a network of hospitals that cater to them. Apart from hospitals in Hyderabad, for employees from Andhra Pradesh, we have tie-ups with hospitals in Bengaluru for Chitoor residents and Tamil Nadu for Nellore residents. This way we covered all the employees in and around the state. Can you please tell us a little about Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences. Built up on 100 acres of land, VIMS is in a picturesque place. Unfortunately it is not launched yet though the infrastructure is in place. Mr.Chandrababu Naidu sanctioned Rs. 60. crore to kickstart the hospital. We are aiming for at least seven specialties. Next on our agenda is to appeal to make VIMS a Level- 1 trauma centre. As it is located on

They are blessed with twins- Ronav Vishnu and Tara Rajeshwari. My second son, Venu Gopal Krishna works on projects related to solar power. I am a willful person and naturally would get into tiffs with all. I lost my mother at a young age and my mother-in-law brought me up. She was my mentor who encouraged me to study and imbibed work culture. Srinivas garu never suppressed my passion to study. He might not have earned riches, but he surely earned us a lot of goodwill. He always goes out of his way to help the destitute. Be it a poor person or rich, an enemy or a back stabber, he sticks his neck out to serve anyone. That trait only made me fall in love with him. HE IS A DOTING GRAND DAD: VIJAY GOPAL TILAK My father is always ambitious to help people and maintain good relationships with them. He sacrices his time and well being to help the public. He never expects anything in return for the help he renders.

Being young, I never fully comprehended his love for helping people in need. Now I see the impact he has made on peoples' lives. One other nice thing about him is his attachment towards his mother. I witnessed how he treated his mother with utmost respect. It is important to also mention that my mother sacriced her professional interests and educated the three of us! I always enjoyed playing sports and games with him. I think I have inherited his extremely competitive spirit! As a minister, he is dedicated, hardworking and honest. I feel Andhra Pradesh needs him more than I do as a father at this moment.

I owe my children’s educational achievements to my wife.

He always goes out of his way to help the needy.

The next route they took was directly to hearts through the traditionally path- stomach. For the past seven years, they are ruling the hearts of Vizagites with their delectable delicacies. That is not all. To know more, what are other off-shoots of these two smart minds read through this story of Mr.Seshagiri Mantri, and Mr. Lagadapati Kiran Kumar, Founders, Directors, Owners of Vinayagar Promoters, Vihar, Euphoria, Rain Tree Spas.

How hospitality happened? Seshu: The next vertical we wanted was hospitality. In 2005, coincidentally, AP Tourism oated a tender to develop food court, banquet and restaurant at Rushikonda. We earned it and Vihar came into existence in 2007. As we didn’t have the experience, we outsourced the manpower from Kolkata who could provide the technical knowhow. We hired consultants, F&B Managers, Executive Chef, top management staff with work experience in Five Star hotels. Many people ridiculed our decision to open an eatery over 10km away from the city. My answer was, “I will make it a destination dining spot.” Spread over 2.5 acres area, this place has become a hit joint among locals and a must-visit spot for tourist. Did you try anything new to attract the crowd? Kiran: Certainly! We always endeavor to introduce something new to our customers. In 2008-09 we organized a lot of events and were the rst one to get the famous Sunburn of Goa to Vizag. But, here people are not into electronic music and prefer Bollywood tunes, thus the event didn’t fetch any mileage. We are regular with food festivals. We make it a point not to have the in-house chefs on these jobs so that the locals get a variety cusines. Do you restrict your services only to in-house dining? Seshu: We are into outdoor catering too. Be it weddings, birthday functions, conferences or meets we take up bulk orders. We extend this service to many public sector organizations. We run the pantry at East Point Golf Club.

well as tourists are missing phenomena. To bring a change, the government and media have to take initiative to attract tourists and change the mindset. Strong marketing strategies must be adopted to show the world that Vizag has bounced back to life. What are your other hospitality projects? Seshu: In 2013, on Sampath Vinayak Road, we opened Euphoria. It is the only ne-dining restaurant with a live band, as mostly live bands perform at hotels. We also launched a nine-room boutique hotel, called Vihar Boutique Hotel (VBH). Any more diversion? Kiran: Hospitality and wellness go hand in hand. So spa was a natural choice for our next project. We opened our rst spa at Rushikonda by revamping the banquet hall. We named it Rain Tree. It gives the best view to the customers, making the whole spa experience unique and serene. We opened two more branches in the city.

SESHU

What hassles did you encounter? Seshu: Poaching rate is too high here. We hired a few young girls from the interior villages of Nagaland, trained them to work as therapists. It is shocking yet true that in last 18 months we have lost four of them to a ve star property. To tackle this, we are making the existing and new staff sign a bond.

Is there any competition? If yes, what are your strategies to be in the race? Kiran: There is competition and it is absolutely cut-throat. Though ours is a stand-alone restaurant, we have to compete with ve star properties. Mega event organizers oat tenders where predominantly only star hotels compete. I can proudly say, Vihar is a brand now and we are given a chance to quote. We have bagged many such grand galas. Navy Ball is one such event. We beat others with our economical pricing and best quality products and services.

together or when they have guests at home. Besides this, hospitality is a more or less season driven industry. Here the prime season is from October to February. This is the period which earns 30-40% of the revenue for the whole year. Unfortunately, Vizag’s hospitality industry is facing setback for the last three consecutive years. In 2012 the Telangana Bandh ruined the market; next year was Andhra bandh and in rst part of 2014 when business was about to pick up, the election code came into vogue with government asking us to shut the shop by 9.30 pm. By next half, when we were hopeful to revive, the devastating Hudhud What are the factors that wiped out all possibilities of earn you profit and how was prot. It is for special occasions like only natural that the touristbirthdays, anniversaries or dependent industry faces the celebrating a success, getsetback. Presently, guests as

Between construction and hospitality, which is better? Kiran: There is no comparison between the two. While construction is a much organized and easier business, food is tough. In hospitality, to ensure smooth running, one has to be vigilant and on one’s toes 24X7. Now it is a buyers’ market. Commit a small mistake, the diner goes to GM to complain. When we take up mega project of catering for 7,000-8,000 people, we have to outsource cooks and chefs. The lower segment of this industry is an unorganized sector. In the nick of the moment, if the head cook gets a better project, he sends the junior; this change can ruin the entire arrangement. These challenges are always there. In terms of prot, we are just breaking even. We are running this business out of passion. It helps one build amazing PR. If we give our introduction as Vinayagar realtors, people may not recognize us. But, Vihar card makes us popular. Can you give us a graph of your growth? Seshu: We started our construction business with just Rs.17 lakh as the initial investment, today the group turnover is close to Rs.20 crore. Even the employee strength has also gone up. We launched our project with just four staff and currently we have 500 direct and indirect employees. What are the projects in the pipeline? Kiran: We are working on around 17-18 projects, so next couple of years are going to be packed. Moving from apartments, we are planning to get into constructing gated communities. Seshu: Running a bar in a stand-alone restaurant is a task as the annual liquor license is very high (42 lakh). That is why by early this year we are opening a pub. This is the only way we can generate prot in this business. However, the pub will be last in our hospitality ventures.

Excerpts

Please give us a brief account of your background. I belong to a Gujarati Memon family. Our people migrated to Hyderabad 60 years ago. We, the third generation to be living here, are more Hyderabadi than Gujarati. I must say that this city is just amazing and truly cosmopolitan in nature and can be a home for any community. It gives an impartial treatment to one and all. This is no recent phenomenon. No wonder, my grandfather set foot in the city and established his business and managed to run a wholesale textile store in the Old City with great success. I entered the scene after completing my education. By God’s grace, today we have 1.25 lakh sft of retail space in Hyderabad under different brand names.

business is gradually fading away. It certainly acts as an advantage to us. Earlier, people would shop only during the festival seasons and that is no more the case now. Occasion or no occasion, people launch off on shopping sprees. This is what I call ‘Casual Buying’. Talking about our brand Kashish, it is a complete boutique store for women, catering to customers of all ages -from a new born to a grandmom. You need not look beyond us for we have collections for every occasion like party, casual, festivals and wedding.

What is the present status of the business? Quite satisfying and pretty decent. The major and noticeable changes I observe in our sector are that the idea of seasonal

What are your marketing strategies? We do not believe in the conventional methods of selling. We give our customers what they want and are always honest with them. We strive to meet their demands. Customer satisfaction is our primary strategy. People who follow ethics need not chalk out special strategies to attract customers. What is your USP? Our inventory. The plethora of clothing that we present to our customers is what makes us unique at any given day. I can with great pride say that the range we offer in quality, price and variety is hard to nd elsewhere.

How did you come into the business and why only the garment industry? Business runs in our blood and I cannot even imagine working in any other eld. Working under any other person is beyond my comprehension. It is just a natural and unquestioned option for me. Though the career chosen is no surprise, the way the business grew in leaps and bounds, taking us to the zenith of prosperity overwhelmed me. Your take on this business Opportunities in this business are phenomenal, especially for those who are hard working and determined. I would advice one to be ambitious, but not avaricious. Take one step at a time and everything else will fall in place. But most importantly, like in any other trade, here too honesty is the best policy. Be fair to your customer and their good itself takes you along way.

to inuence behavioral patterns. We have been working on the rst part till now. As far as the rest two categories are concerned, we will be taking a serious look at them and work towards them. We are considering social media networking as a part of our marketing plan.

What are your approaches and challenges? Re-inventing myself in the ever evolving fashion industry is my approach and also my challenge. I did not face any other hurdles in the business. It was a cakewalk. God has been very kind to us.

Comment on the Hyderabad market. People have been talking of market taking a beating for the past four years. But look here, we have been multiplying aggressively. It only goes to prove that if your work is good, the market is never bad for you. The trade response is not guided by the external factors like political or community disturbances. What role do advertisement and marketing play? Advertising has three tasks in principle- to inform, to bring in attitudinal change and

How do you deal with competition? I believe that there is no competition if your work is genuine. If you have condence in yourself and work hard with the interest of your customers at your heart, nothing can stop you. This builds loyalty. Being a trendsetter and creating a benchmark for your brand is very essential to deal with any competition. When the market is bad, customer loyalty pays. I strongly believe that we are a part of an immense fraternity. More than a competitor, we complement one another. How do you update yourself? I closely watch the fashion trends in the movies, on the small screen and the runways here and abroad.

Do the big designer labels like Sabya Sachi, Tarun Tahiliani, Shantanu and Nikhil affect your biz? Surprisingly they do not pose as a competition. Moreover we surely have an edge over them when it comes to traditional attire. Not many go for such high designer labels. Every place has its own signature style and generally people are comfortable and stick to them. Don’t you think this is the way customs and traditional designs are preserved for posterity? Besides understanding this sentiment, we with our decades of living here can connect with the local taste. Nobody can present the Hyderabadi trousseau like we do. We have a wider range and sensible pricing when you compare us with them. Who is/are your nearest rival/rivals? Nobody. Like I said before, we are all parts of a fraternity. Sometimes we even learn from the other brands. Moreover, we should not look at competition as a negative or discouraging factor.

Re-inventing myself in the ever evolving fashion industry is my approach and also my challenge.

Did the state bifurcation affect your business? The bifurcation did not really affect our business. Our clientele is such that they transcend boundaries to reach us. Women are loyal to Kashish and nothing can stop them from shopping here! How do you assess the markets before launching a new brand? We test the waters by recording our customers’ feedback. We also take dip stick surveys in different areas about the factors like price sensitivity, clothing variety and in-vogue trends. What is your take on online shopping? The paradigm shift towards online purchases is fantastic. Anyone can buy anything from any corner of the world while shopping online. It is the future. On the other hand, the brick and mortar stores will never fade away because only they can offer you the ‘feel factor’. What do you think the government should do to boost the market? Our government should organize international shopping festivals like the Dubai Festival. This will give the state twin benets. On one hand it gives the needed boost to the retail clothing business and on the other, it will give a llip to tourism of the state. How many employees do you have? We are able to generate employment for 600 people directly and 2000 indirectly. The tailors and karigars are considered indirect employees. What are your employment strategies? We follow strict standardized operating procedures(SOPs)for recruitment. We choose our employees basing our judgement on their skills, experience and creative potential. red | january 2015 | 102

What are the incentives and training you offer to retain them? We offer job security and health benets to our employees. I run an open and easy management system. My employees can reach me easily. We all work as a team which is why we do not have employee codes. We follow a pre- set training calendar and provide training in etiquette, soft skills and spoken English. We also enroll the top level management in training programmes to improve their performance. If required we send them to other places for crash courses. What is your own contribution to the business? I involve in the daily operations at every level of the organization. Perhaps that is why I devote majority of my time at work. What is your CSR exercise? As a CSR initiative, we have formulated Qudsia Banu Foundation which is named after my deceased sister. The foundation works on gender issues, particularly on women empowerment. It is very close to my heart as I started it with an intention to do something for this community in my dear sister’s name. What are your expansion plans? We are looking to multiply our stores. We want to develop it as a national and international brand. Advice to the new entrepreneurs Plan, execute and enjoy!
