PUBLISHER’S NOTE
Welcome 2014! I hope this year will be a better gift for us than the previous one, which saw many upheavals. It was especially traumatic for our state because of the declaration of its bifurcation. While the political circles are in a state of flux and confusion, the commoner too has had his share of hardships with protracted protests which have brought the administration to a grinding halt. Yes, we have entered the New Year with a number of issues hanging and unresolved. But let us hope they get sorted out soon. To set a racy tone to the New Year, we have Mega Power Star Ram Charan Tej on our cover. His movie Yevadu is set to release for Sankranti and we wish him all the best. We speak of two women of great eminence. While Dr. Rajni Mukherjee of Seven Hills Hospital has been making innumerable parents happy by attending to their bundles of joy, Mrs. Sailaja Kiran of Margadarshi and Kalanjali has been indirectly providing livelihood to a number of artisans. Though both are famous in their respective fields, we re-introduce them in our Eve segment. Opening educational institutes is his forte and we ask S. Ravindra how he manages as many as 28 organisations with such stupendous success and record his response. Renowned photographer Villart Ramana went against the grain and clicked away to success, that too after taking up a rather unconventional vocation. Not all can do that. These are the men you meet in our Life segment. We have chosen the just married Anik Hirawat to describe how he has been carrying the heavy mantle of family business, while we also wanted to know how the self-made Aamir Sharma, the much-awarded architect, copes with the tough challenges. Gennext gives a vivid glimpse of them. When we want to travel why think of only tourist spots and heritage sites? That is why this time about we take you to the Mayfair Spa Resort which revives the body, heart and soul. I hope you find this info given in Retreat helpful. For the forthcoming festival, we want to gently remind our readers of the traditional sweets that are getting drowned in the aroma of western puddings and desserts. Turn to Cuisine to know about them. The regular columns, anyway, are part of the rich fare we offer you. Enjoy! We wish our readers, patrons and advertisers a very happy Sankranti.

azzel Ice Cream Café is making headway, spreading all over the city. After its successful advent at Gachibowli a year ago, the owners came up with an outlet in Jubilee Hills last month and this month they have two more new additions to their kitty. One is at Banjara Hills Road No. 2 while another is at Manjeera Trinity Mall in Kukatpally. Both offer the best of ice cream, pastas, sandwiches and coffees. The Banjara Hills outlet is spread over 2,000 sft in two levels – ground and first floor and is opposite to KBR Park. Elegantly decorated interiors with their trademark blue and yellow coloured striped background, the café is located ideally for the young and the old to catch up with the latest tastes. Starting from regular Espresso to specialized signature hot coffees like strawberry latte and black forest mocha, the place has different varieties of coffees to choose from. “While the children cherish the ice creams, their parents are seen indulging in pastas and coffees. Catering to the entire family is our plus point,” Sunil Indurti, the promoter of Hazzel, pointed out. Apart from regular ice creams, sundaes are very popular. Sundaes like Cookie Crunch, Chocolate and Cream and Angoori Gulab Jamun Sundae are exclusively created by Hazzel. The USP of Hazzel has been its pricing and they continue with the low price tradition even at this new outlet. Timings: 11.00 am - 11.00 pm Ph.: 040 4200 6331

V I Z A G STRANGE BEDFELLOWS Rivals coming together is no new trait in politics as it makes strange bedfellows. The present case is of Rajya Sabha MP T. Subbarami Reddy who has developed a special affinity towards Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao. A birthday gala TSR had recently hosted for Ganta at Vizag Novotel Hotel is a testimony to this. Yet another sign of this new found love is given in the recent star cricket match. TSR made sure that Ganta was not only the chief guest at the event but also tossed the coin. Whatever may be the platform, TSR is confident of getting the Vizag MP ticket and looks at Ganta , who is likely to be fielded from TDP as a formidable rival and is all set to strike a friendly deal with him, convincing him to accept either MP seat of Anakapalle or Gajuwaka Assembly segment. Meantime Ganta himself is having his own apprehensions of facing TSR in a neck and neck contest. So it is now the issue of two uneasy friends coming close with their respective axes to grind. Political circles are looking at this new friendship with a lot of interest.
TOP COP ACTS TOUGH City Police Commissioner B.Shivadhar Reddy seems to be the man on the job. His recent crackdown on financial offenders in cheque bouncing cases has fetched him widespread laurels. A total of 948 Non-Bailable Warrants (NBWs) are pending in the limits of Visakhapatnam City Police Commissionerate under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Mr. Reddy directed the offenders to appear in the court concerned and warned them that they would be arrested in case if they fail. The CP also busted a call girl racket in a beauty parlour in MVP colony. Asking all the parlours that are indulging in such rackets to mend their ways, he said that the names of all those involved - young or influential - will be revealed to public gaze. red | january 2014 | 76
WHO WILL BE THE POWER HOUSE IN TDP? Ganta is likely to be back to the TDP fold. But a few people know there is a storm is brewing behind the scenes as the party cadres are trying to woo back the ‘prodigal’ son who strayed into Congress. The main role in the drama was played by Ayyannapatrudu who was resisting Ganta’s re-entry tooth and nail. The protagonist, who has a considerable say in the party has two good reasons to do so. One he is apprehensive that the more charismatic Ganta might overshadow him. Secondly and interestingly, one family-one ticket policy of TDP is playing spoil sport here. While Patrudu is steadfast on the demand that his son be given ticket, Ganta wants it for either himself or one of his four cronies who are following him into the party. It is said Ganta plans to re-enter TDP by January end. All eyes are on this major development as this one single decision on Ankapalle seat will reveal who is more powerful and who really is the ‘Boss’ in the region.
KINGFISHER GIRL Tall, sensuous, amazingly gorgeous and confident - these words describe our very own city’s beauty queen Sobhita Dhulipala. Winner of Miss India 2013, this diva represented India on international platform in Miss Earth pageant. Despite clinching the gold medal by winning Miss Photogenic in the contest and becoming the third Indian after Aishwarya Rai and Diana Hayden to win this title after 16 years, she couldn’t bag the top crown. But perhaps this is just the beginning for this stunning lasso. Recently she has created ripples by posting a super sensual picture of her that was clicked for Kingfisher Calendar (2014). It is a known fact that top models from all over the world aspire to be featured on this calendar. Sobhita’s selection has proved that this girl is meant for something really big. Her hot picture is not only flashed around in the social networks but has become a visual link among the P-3elite.
MOUCHE SPORTING AJIT Nowadays, Vizagites have spotted a man often busy twirling his moustache. Be it greeting the guests or even speaking at a public gathering, this man doesn’t forget to flaunt his newly grown moustache. He is known for his efficient administrative skills and thorough professionalism. The guests or the casual visitors to the hotel often find him taking rounds, keeping an eye on the happenings around and instructing a waiter here or having a word with the gardener there. This new mannerism of flaunting his mouche seems to have further added to his stature. He is none other than Mr. Ajit Singh Garcha, General Manager, The Park. A few believe that he is inspired by the hero of Ram Leela. Refuting all these talks, Ajit says it is simply a trial for a makeover. Whatever is the reason, the "imperial" moustache style has done its magic. It certainly adds to his imposing personality. It is the twirls of his moustache that are grabbing all the eyeballs.
AMAZING RAJNI She is charm personified. Owner of a slender figure, which she complements with an amazing sense of style, she breaks the clichéd image of a teacher. Yes, she is one and only Rajni Chitra. Quite active in social circles, her name is a must in guest list of all elite parties and events that take place in the city. She makes it a point to attend all of them and she greets each and every one with that winsome smile never leaving her face. Equally strong is her commitment to her job. Being the Vice-Principal of Pollock School, she strikes a perfect balance between her personal and professional life. Onlookers wonder from where this diva gets all the energy to be seen in late night social gathering and be at the school next day sharp at 9.00 am.
MALLIK’S BASH When it comes to celebrating Sankranti, no one can match the style of the ace businessman, Mr. Mallikaarjun and his wife. Malliks take the revelry to a new level. The do smacks of tradition, presenting all the rituals related to Sankranti and traditional food. People expectations go up with the couple raising the bar higher and higher. As his son Anirudh is coming back from abroad this year, sources say it’s going to be a bigger bash-like never before. The countdown has started! All eyes are on Mallik to see what his mega move is for this year! Organising such events are imperative to keep our traditions alive and hand them down to the next generation, insists Mallik.
MARVELOUS MAMA After creating a sensation on FM radio, he is on a mission to set new records. Popularly called Veeru Mama, he is in news once again. He runs an event management company, Vteam and recently bagged one of the biggest events of this year, i.e. Ganta Pujita’s Sangeet ceremony. People wonder how he got such a mega project, despite the presence of bigger event management companies in the city. However, he has proved that he was the right choice for the event by impeccably conducting the show right from the word go. That, he has thoroughly entertained the guests is evident from the claps and cheers he drew. The only lacunae, the guests felt, was the absence of performers from outside the city and the repetition of Chiru’s dialogues and songs. However, everyone admitted that keeping the biggies engrossed for three hours is no joke! Hope Veeru Mama takes the critical appreciation in his stride and fares better in future.

STAR TO EMPOWER AAM AADMI? When Forbes Magazine recently conducted the survey of stalwarts from Tollywood, Mahesh Babu was expected to take the Numero Uno slot. But it was Pawan Kalyan who landed there. That is the craze Pawan enjoys. Surprisingly the star himself doesn’t make much of the honour as neither he bent in gratitude nor did he comment. Pawan’s this no-frills attitude seems to have earned him fans in political circles too. Rumours are rife that Pawan is going to lead Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party in the state. Many feel it’s a great development. It may be recalled that he emerged unscathed even when his Big Bro’s PRP was steeped in controversies. He ran the Yuva Rajyam successfully and was the ‘showstopper’ for the party. He may be Mr. Clean otherwise but his three marriages have certainly left a blemish on his character. Will he be taken seriously as a leader in the making?
A REFUGE FOR RENEGADES Kiran Kumar Reddy may be dilly-dallying on the launch of new party or maybe it is going to be a reality. But this is creating quite a bit of turmoil in the lives of many politicians. There are a number of Congressmen who are eager to jump on the bandwagon. Many are wary of flying with either TDP or YSRCP because one they are not sure of getting the ticket and two- they are not sure of the parties’ prospects at the hustings. In this scenario Kiran’s ‘party’ offers a ray of hope for these likely renegades. Kiran has emerged as a hero by taking umbrage against the proposed bifurcation and even rebelling against the high command. What is to be seen is if Kiran’s ‘party’ will really live up to the expectations or will the people repose the faith in the party because its composition will be nothing but the replica of the same old Congress.
BATTING FOR LOTUS If cricket is called the gentlemen’s game, former cricketer V.V.S. Lakshman often is dubbed as the gentleman of the game. If such a man speaks out for a political party, it certainly fetches the party a good mileage. Lakshman taking cudgels on the BJP’s behalf has been looked at as a plus point for the party. However, some of BJP detractors feel that Lakshman after all has his own axe to grind. It is a known fact that the sports star is setting up an academy in Hyderabad to train budding cricketers and is on lookout for a suitable plot to build it. Hence by throwing his mite behind the BJP which may come into power, Lakshman is said to be doing his spadework. People are also of the opinion that it is purely a quid pro quo with the party. It has to be seen if the man, who never crossed the lines of propriety in the game of cricket, will do the same in the game of politics too. Mr. Clean made a clean breast of his real intentions.
S(H)AVE TIME Right from Student No. 1 to Eega, all his directorial ventures are Box Office hits. He is known as the harbinger of luck to the producers who treat him as the Man with Midas’ Touch. That is Rajamouli who is dearly called Jakkanna in the film circles, coz he leaves no stone unturned to give that finesse to his films. Of late, the star director is sporting a beard. The length of his beard is proportionate to the length of the time he takes to complete his flick. The director who generally takes a year to finish his film seems to be taking longer over his magnum opus Baahubali. He is so dedicated to his job that he finds no time even to shave. He thinks that the shave time can be put to better use. Producers feel that the upcoming directors must emulate Rajamouli and be as dedicated.
JWALA DOUSED Sports, guest of honor for several launch parties and item songs in movies; looks like Jwala Gutta is omnipresent. After trying her luck in every possible area, she is now set on her new mission to get noticed. If it is to be believed, there are talks Jwala is quoting bare minimum charges for endorsing a brand. She is on the hunt to get as many ads and brands as possible. The idea is to get publicity which she feels she has not been able to grab through her all previous attempts through various modes. However, what makes the news is that despite slashing down her charges, no advertisers are turning up to rope in Jwala. Bad luck girl! People are of opinion that she should take a break and ponder over a better plan!
FRIENDS NO MORE It is a case of fair weather friends. When everything is fine we are hum saath saath hai. But one hitch and the rats start deserting the sinking ship. This is what happening to the Musaddilal Bhagwat Swaroop (MBS) Jewellers. Arrest of Managing Director Sukhesh Gupta for alleged irregularities in gold imports seems to have sent shivers down the spine of his clientele as well as the models who endorsed his products in a big way. It may be recalled here that the sleuths had registered a case against Gupta and some officials of MMTC, charging them with entering into a criminal conspiracy to cheat MMTC and the exchequer to the tune of Rs. 100 cr. It is also said that the CBI is going through the database of MBS to find out who its regular customers are and whether the deals the jeweller had with them are on the record or not. It is said that they are even zeroing in on the people who worked as the brand’s ambassadors. Whether the remuneration they have earned from the MBS was in proportion to the tax paid. The hitherto close associates of MBS are so scared of the development that they are switching off to any enquiry on the matter. The city’s high-end customers of MBS are having sleepless nights.
ROHIT’S RAGA Known for his killer looks which is doubled with tons of riches; Rohit Sethi is the heartthrob of many in town. It won’t be wrong to call him the most eligible bachelor of the city. Owner of a super hot body, people know that this lad is a fitness freak. Adding to his charisma, now Rohit has picked up one more lethal tool, i.e. DJing. Yes, you heard it right! Of late he is spotted taking over the DJ console and belting out foot-tapping numbers at Liquids. This has only enhanced craze for him among his friends and fans. There are tittle-tattles that soon he is going to procure a huge console for himself and will be seen hosting in-house parties where he will entertain the guests with this new passion. The multifaceted Rohit is certainly an envy of his peers.
TDP’S BRAHMAASTRAM It is a great blend of glamour and brains when we refer to the most popular couple - Nara Lokesh and Brahmini. While Brahmini is known for her charm and looks, hubby Lokesh is applauded as the brain behind the TDP strategies. Brahmani’s presence at a veterinary camp triggered speculation of her entry into politics that would lend a fresh look to the party’s campaign. Meanwhile, whether it is a social gathering or a private function, the couple engages in a very meaningful repartee. While Lokesh harps on his father’s Hi- Tech achievements, his wife pokes fun at her husband’s obsession with party, saying, “Like father, like son.” People wonder if this is only a casual conversation or a well-rehearsed strategy.
WHAT’S THE END GAME, SANIA? First her superb shuttle shows, then her nose ring and glam factor and then wedding to Sohaib Mallik - city’s youth icon Sania Mirza nee has always managed to be in news. Her recent frequent visits to Hyderabad have created a lot of buzz in the city. A little birdie has tweeted that Sania is in a serious thought of opening a tennis coaching academy of her own in her hometown. While her wedding to a non-Indian had upset many of her close acquaintances, who strongly felt that she should have married someone from her own country. Now they seemed to have a change of mind. Wooing them further, she is hosting parties whenever she is in town. Her friends and family members are not only thronging them but are also often spotted having good time enjoying her company. Sania from where do you get your winning moves?

ith over seven decades of rein in textile industry, be their fabrics or the indigenous readymade brands; they set new records. Today, Hirawat certainly needs no introduction and the very fact that the store has become a landmark in Vizag vouches for it. The journey which had a humble beginning in the city’s old town area, has now crossed the city limits. The 27-year-old Anik Hirawat is here to talk of his own contribution to this ever-expanding mega empire.

FLASHBACK Our business has its roots in 1940s shares, Anik. His grandfather Mr. T.C. Hirawat travelled all the way from Rajasthan to Kolkata, where he started his career in a Coal Company. After working there for five years, he shifted to Vizianagaram. It was the period when mining was a flourishing sector in this region. However, very soon Vizag and a new trade beckoned him. His earlier stints with a clothing firm in Kolkata were somehow looked promising to him. Moreover, the atmosphere in coal mines didn’t suit him. Thus he took a diversion by setting up a small retail shop Hirawat Textiles in the city. Later he took the dealership of Mafatlal and opened the shop ‘Mafatlal Hirawat.’ The business has reached peak and they turned out to be the best retailer for ‘Mafatlal’ in the country. Now it was time for his father Ashok Hirawat to take over. From late 1960s his father started looking after the uniform segment and marketing department. Integrating the business system vertically, he introduced the manufacturing unit. They started procuring fabrics and stitching them to sell as readymade ones on retail counters. The business grew in leaps and bounds. Initially fabrics, then readymade, specialized swimming costumes, uniforms and now it deals with a spectrum of household articles under one roof except saris. Thus it was turn for the third generation to infuse fresh ideas and take the business to the next level. This is when Anik and his twin brother Abik came into the picture.
retail giants, like why and how it is expanding, what are the factors that led to their success, it helped me overcome the challenges and rectify the loopholes.” ADDITION After he joined the business, he opened three stores in three years - Hirawat Deco at Siripuram, one branch in MVP colony and the other a counter at Gajuwaka. Soon neighbouring Vizianagaram will be having a Hirawat branch. The introduction of the furnishings segment in their Dabagardens store is also Anik’s brainchild. While this branch of home furnishing caters to midrange customer, Hirawat Deco meets the high-end needs. USP “It is our goodwill. We are not those run-of-the mill traders who buy readymade stuff from metros and put a margin sale. We don’t get into the gimmick of discounts. We procure raw material or the fabric. Since we manufacture, we keep our prices uniform and competitive.” Today he runs a huge business, manufacturing 6,000 pieces in a day. They are the suppliers of uniforms all over Andhra Pradesh and also handle bulk export orders. “Our manufacturing unit makes a lot of difference and keeps us in the forefront,” he adds.
TAKING OVER Anik’s introduction to the family business started at an early age. After obtaining a graduation business management degree from the GITAM University, he went to Manchester, where he studied International Fashion Retailing for one year. He returned to India only after earning working knowledge, serving for a year in Marks and Spencer. The skills and knowledge gained in UK might not directly come handy to an entrepreneur who enters the Indian market as the local dynamics are different. But the exposure certainly helped Anik in predicting what would happen in the upcoming years in this industry. “Vizag experience may give one a chance to see the trends in Indian fashion scenario but this international exposure keeps me one step ahead of others. For example, e-market is obsolete in west but it is a rage here,” explains Anik. He is in charge of the total retailing. CHALLENGES His experience in UK market and its functioning were of a different order. The system back here runs on an absolutely contradictory track. The ground level is not at all organized and one has to get into detailing here. “As my course was based on a lot of case studies on red | january 2014 | 83
VISION He wishes to make their presence all over the state. He also wishes to go national and become the top uniform manufacturer with Hirawat as the brand. He laments the fact that even now when Vizag is touted as a developed city, a lot of local people go to other cities for shopping. He wants to make things available here. Especially the premium segments in retailing. SUCCESS MANTRA “Personally one gets success when one puts his/her hard work in something he/she believes is good at.” When it comes to their business, they are different from others in the market, he adds. He prefers to play in volumes, not individual items. “We are not commercial. We don’t believe in just selling our products. At the end of the day we are here to stay long. So we focus more on building lasting relationship with the customer. This was the tradition set up by my grandfather and we are sticking to it,” explains Anik. ANY REGRET “None at all! I knew and grew up with the idea of toeing the family line. Hence it was all very clear and focused intention. Since my school days I had evinced interest in the store and its functions so it was just a cakewalk for me. Had I taken up a job elsewhere, I wouldn’t have been able to sit here and talk to you. The best parts of running one’s own business is the flexibility and freedom it allows. I can take leave whenever I want. I am in control of the things and not tied up. What more can I ask for?” FUTURE PLANS He wants to focus more on retailing and expansion of this segment. He also plans to open two stores every year in coming two years. The regions which are easily accessible like Kakinada, Gopalapatnam, Rajahmundry are his target places. It gives him more exposure, he adds. Two years down the line he wants to get into emarketing and e-retailing completely.

ADVICE One has to be focused and know their choice of profession. Start planning your career right from the stage of education. If you select a stream of studies
and take up a job in another field, you have to start right from the scratch and end up wasting precious years. One has to be very specific rather than being a jack of all trades. Excel in one particular area. PRINCIPLE “One needs to be truthful to his/her customer. Give honest suggestion to them rising above the idea of selling or making profit.” DAY FROM DIARY It is quite simple. As we just got married, the whole life looks new and everything seems to be in a pretty confused state. I know things going to change, so is my daily routine. 8.00 am: Wakeup time, freshen up and have breakfast 9.00 am: Report to work 1.00 pm: Back home for lunch 9.30 - 10.00 pm: Get back home 10.30 pm: Dinner time 11.00 pm: Watch television for an hour 00.00 hrs: Retire to sleep Weekends are for movies, I don’t miss a single movie. As I am part of Round Table India, Young Indians my socializing is taken care of. I am passionate about cars, earlier it used to be fast driving, but post-marriage I changed to long drives. We also go for pubbing and partying with friends.
ANIK AND HIS NEW BRIDE My marriage with Jaishree that took place just two weeks ago, is an arranged one. We got to know each other before marriage as we were into three months of courtship. Of course, things are different over phone and it is different when you meet someone in person. But we struck a chord in our very first meet. She is going through a transition as she hails from Jaipur. She is a well-educated and confident girl. We have same interests. Everything is very rosy and dream-like.
JAISHREE SAYS He is very friendly. Somehow I didn’t expect it. He takes care of me so well that I don’t miss my home here. He understands the things I like without even my mentioning. We just got back from honeymoon in New Zealand and have some of the best memories for life. Every moment spent with him is special. If it has to be about a perfect date, we would like to have a sea view dinner with some light live music. HYDERABAD
Designed Destiny By Ranita Ray inner of IIID Award inResidential, Public Space, Hospitality and Regional category consecutively for 2005, 2006 and 2007 he went on bagging the IIID National Award in 2008 and 2009. Perhaps it was just the beginning, as the next year he was bestowed with Society Interior Design Award, coveted Elle Decor Award and the most prestigious of all, being listed as India’s top seven Interior Designers and Architects by Forbes India. The winning spree continued, by once again grabbing the Elle Decor Award in 2012 and Best Commercial Interior Designer in Zingy International Jury Awards 2013. Confident, smart, sharp, go-getter, extraordinarily creative; perhaps adjectives fall short to describe Mr. Aamir Sharma. He is one of the finest interior designers and architects, Hyderabad could ever have. His creative genius doesn’t restrict to his marvellous designs. In the industry he is also known for his strong sense of humour and quick wit. It is impossible to stay gloomy when this handsome man is on the speaker’s seat. Let’s learn how he has designed his name and fame. Don’t miss the in-between fun punch!
Shoot by Dhana Vijay
W
BACKGROUND Purely a self-made man, Aamir was very good at drawing and blessed with a vivid imagination which he could translate on paper. Spotting these traits, his father advised him to join interior designing. He enrolled himself for three-year diploma course in an institute called Module. He topped the institute. Soon, he figured out just being good at something is not enough and one needs practical exposure. In 1999 Aamir started his career by joining Siraj and Renu Architects and Interior Designer. A year later he started taking up individual projects. His college love Hameeda whom he married became a source of support and together they founded their firm called Aandh 10 years ago and since then he never looked back. CHALLENGES Realizing that architects and interior designers from Hyderabad are not recognized at national level, he questioned himself, “Why is he restricting his horizon?” He took up the initiative to bring a change. He started taking up some mega projects outside the state and today he has joined the topnotch architects of the country.
The first taste of success came in 2005, when he was awarded the best designer in IIID category of residential projects. He is the only architect from Andhra Pradesh to win the IIID awards at national-level for three consecutive years. In the same year, Forbes conducted a survey and his project was rated as five best houses in India. In 2014 he is going to be featured by an international magazine from Italy as one of the most futuristic and creative designer from Asia region. PROJECTS CLOSE TO HIS HEART His creations done with unique materials are some of his favorites, like N-Grill for Nagarjuna or the swanky pub Prost in Bangalore. The entire night club he has done by using only waste metal. USP He is completely experimental and creating out-of-the-box is his USP and forte as well. He uses a lot of unconventional materials. He doesn’t indulge in replication as he doesn’t believe in making a signature style. If two friends get their houses designed by him they don’t like them to be identical. One must be either unique or ready to be thrown out of the industry.
INSPIRATION “I am a rebel at heart. What has to be used on right, I use on left. If one wants black I give white. But I do make it look good,” briefs Aamir. Despite this trait, his hit rate is 95%. Sharing one such venture, he cites Flortex, a commercial project. Aamir designed the space by doing the entire ceiling using artificial grass, something no one could ever imagine or attempted before. He can draw inspiration from anything. A very candid Aamir, admits that he emulates designers from across the world without actually copying them. He says his real challenge lies in executing them with the resources available locally. For example, the house he has done for Allu Arjun, he got the idea from a project done in Australia. But to replicate the design in Indian climate, conditions and setup, he had to put a lot of effort. SUCCESS MANTRA It’s a combination of many vitals, he says. “In this field, there are a lot of creative people who are better than me. But on the scale of one to 10, three points go to creativity; two to PR skills and the rest five for business acumen. One has to be shrewd and has an incisive thought process and ability to understand human psychology to survive in this industry.” JOURNEY SO FAR Behind this success is tons of hardship, with the roughest patch from 2000 to 2006. But the inner drive with a strong belief that he will shine, kept him going on.

MISSION
REGRET Why I have not been featured on red magazine before! (laughs)
He wishes to open an institute to train students on various aspects of the industry like - designing, accounting, handling clients and workers. Stating there is a solid reason behind this decision, he says, “I was denied knowledge when I was in real pursuit of it with my seniors being reluctant to share it with me. Hence I don’t want the fresher to face the same fate. Isn’t knowledge meant to be shared?”
DEFINE YOURSELF IN ONE WORD Mental (crazy) DAY FROM DIARY My day starts in the night as I am an insomniac. I sleep only for 3 - 4 hours.
VISION
11.30 pm: I work till 2.00 - 3.00 am. I make all my designs, sketches. This is the only time I get for myself, so I plan for my projects
He wishes to see his name along with those great architects of world working on mega commercial projects, especially in the futuristic city like Dubai.
3.00 am - 5.00 am: I am on my iPad either listening to music or chatting with friends abroad
WANT TO BE REMEMBERED AS
5.30 am: Go to sleep | 8.30 am: Wake up
A great designer and a person, which no one can ever be!

ADVICE
6.30 pm: Done with my office | 7.00 pm: I pick up my bike and go to friends | 8.00 pm: Call from wife to get back home and like an obedient hubby I am homebound.
Time has changed. Earlier people could be easily convinced. Now the clients are in know of designs. There is a lot of competition. If one is a bit laidback, the next designer is there to take the job. Every day is a new learning. The day you say you are perfect, you are gone.
COMPATIBILITY METER
I hate Sundays or holidays. I feel these are the loneliest days when my friends are on a relaxing mode. I try to do something creative or simply watch movies at home. I am crazy about my cars and bikes and go on drives!
HAMEEDA SAYS It has been a journey, living and working together; it’s like growing up together. As a husband he is caring and very protective too. There is never a dull moment as he keeps me laughing. He is basically high on life. We are not like typical husband and wife, but more of friends. As a business partner he is aggressive, creative and highly independent. He is very spontaneous with his designs, rising above the cliché. Both of us love to travel. But often we end up combining work with pleasure. All in all, he is flamboyant and believes in enjoying life to the fullest. HIS FAVOURITES Brands: Very much brand conscious Attire: He practically lives in his jeans Shoes: Shoe collection is his latest craze Colour: White Passion: Loves his cars. He has a style of his own and carries whatever he wears very well Car: Porsche. Lamborghini is his dream car Hobby: He writes poetry

AAMIR SAYS We fell in love, ran away from home and got married. Hameeda is absolute opposite of me. I am wild, hyperactive and crazy; she is sober, quiet and prefers to avoid publicity; so it strikes a good balance. I am dependent on her for anything and everything; I always turn to her for advice. She is the calming factor. We worked together till 2008. Since the projects have increased exponentially, now we handle our cases individually. But as we have quite a few common interests like music, fashion and travel; the romantic spark always keeps our love fresh.
HER FAVOURITES Colour: Don’t know Attire: She looks great in everything Food: Italian Holiday: Nothing specific Ideal date: She doesn’t reveal as i might do the exactly opposite Movie: Not a film person, but loves all the TV soaps from the channel colors Actor: It’s me, because I am acting all the time not to get into trouble Actress: Zohra Sehgal Car: Mini Cooper (but I drive it most of the time)

ENGAGED AFTER FOUR YEARS! It looks strange. But it is a fact! Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade have been together since 2009, and they are finally ready to take the plunge! The 31-year-old Miami Heat star proposed to his girlfriend and she said YES to the proposal. Gabby’s 8.5 carat cushion cut diamond ring is almost as big as her finger! The jewellery was made by Jason of Beverly Hills, and it’s safe to say that the 40-year-old actress is thrilled with her new bling. This relationship took some effort. But they made it work, and now they’re getting hitched. Congrats the ‘new’ couple!
COLD YET HOT Mariah Carey has a super ‘seksi’ thing she does every year, and she shared it with her Instagram followers recently. So what is it? Well, the 43-year-old singer goes hot tubbing in the Aspen snow! Mariah shared the bikini-clad picture, saying “It's just a tradition #aspen #coldyethot.” Cold yet hot is Right! And what’s even better is that Monroe and Moroccan - aka Dem Babies - were a part of the tradition too! Everything about this is just fabulous! But we’d expect nothing less from Mariah!

BOLLYWOOD MASALA KATRINA STILL WITH SALMAN! Known for his liaisons, Salman Khan is still attached to a few of them. According to sources, former Miss India Sangeeta Bijlani, Sallu’s first girlfriend, is still in touch with him. Whether it is Ganesh pooja or a birthday party, in the Khan household, Sangeeta makes her presence felt. Kats too wants to maintain her relationship with Salman in the same way! Kats and Sallu split a while ago. Kats, who is reportedly dating Ranbir Kapoor, seems to have said that she wants to maintain relationship with Salman just like his first GF. The ‘diplomatic’ Kat said that Salman was her mentor and his family always supported her. Stating this Kats seems to have sent a feeler to Salman.
DIP REPLACES KAREENA Deepika Padukone seems to be the new actress in demand. She has given five back to back Box Office hits - Cocktail, Race 2, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express and Ram Leela. Sources say she is acting in Karan Johhar’s next project. Apparently Karan dropped Kareena Kapoor from his dream project titled ‘Shuddhi’ and roped in Deepika. If things go well we might get to see Deepika opposite Hrithik Roshan for the first time. Karan's dream however to ‘reunite’ Hrithik and Kareena after 12 years on screen is not taking place. Another reason for dropping Kareena is the actress’s packed schedule. It may also be noted that Kareena failed to deliver any hits this year (2013) with Gori Tere Pyaar Mein being a huge disaster at the Box Office.

HOT AUNTY SEEKS MEGA BUCKS Looks like there was a neck and neck competition for aunty characters in Tollywood with the comeback of Nadiya. ‘Mirchi’ and ‘Aththarintiki Daaredi’ made her an instant star in Telugu despite her being a Tamil heroine. There were many speculations that top directors and producers were after her. Though ‘AD’ is bracing for 100 days, there is no second offer for this Aunty. The overnight sensational aunty failed to cash in on it. Reason? She seems to be demanding huge remuneration on a par with the top heroines. Instead of negotiating with producers in Hyderabad, she preferred to stay back in Chennai and this may push her into oblivion.
STARS & SEEMANDHRA SHOPS Actresses launching stores is no new phenomenon. But what makes this fresh phenomenon newsworthy is Tollywood heroines going on a launching spree in Seemandhra. Anushka has recently launched a cloth showroom in Kakinada and Kajal followed suit. While Catherine opened a showroom in Rajahmundry, Swetha Basu Prasad and Nanditha had gone all the way to Bheemavaram on a similar errand. It is heard that the actresses are getting handsome remunerations for store launches. Anushka, who is in big demand among all the heroines, is charging Rs. 18 lakh for a store launch. Other heroines are also getting good packages like, Kajal: Rs. 10 lakh, Anjali: Rs. 5 lakh, Catherine: Rs. 3 lakh, Pranitha: Rs. 3 lakh, Kriti: Rs.1.5 lakh, Nanditha and Swetha: Rs. 1 lakh each.

SECRETS OF RAETIKON Secrets of Raetikon, an adorably vectorized indie game focused on the joy of flight and the horrors of life in the animal kingdom, joins Steam Early Access in January. It’s an exploratory game. You play the role of a bird capable of flying all over the game world, but only by interacting with objects on the ground. You can discover those titular secrets. That’s not as simple as landing and tapping an object though, as it is populated by other critters. The game’s description is that hostile animals protect their habitats and interact with the player as well as each other, forming a complex ecosystem.

e ‘pounced’ on the Telugu film industry as Chirutha and made a Rachcha. With his powerful portrayals this Magadheera made his way into the hearts of his fans where he ensconced himself as their Nayak. The six-film-old Ram Charan Tej is all set to gallop once again like a Thoofan to shake the Box Office registers during this Sankranthi with his new film Yevadu. An avid equestrian and entrepreneur, Cherry - that is how he is dearly called - was ranked #69 in 2013 India’s Forbes list with an earnings of Rs. 12.67 cr last month. If you thought you know everything about him, you are surely in for surprises.
Your new film Yevadu is all set to hit the silver screens. Tell us about the film. It’s an action thriller with lots of twists and turns and I feel it definitely appeal to all sections of audience. First time my cousin stylish star Allu Arjun is sharing the screen with me, though in a cameo. It is all set to hit the screen for Sankranti. My film Nayak too had a Sankranti release. It turned out to be a block buster, shaking the box office and earning me a wide applause. Going by this sentiment and considering all the hard work that went into it, I hope Yevadu will repeat the magic. I keep my fingers crossed. What do you say about your Bollywood experience? It was a great experience. Quite naturally my interaction with Bollywood was not at all difficult as most of the actors are known to me through my father. I was received with great warmth. Besides reinforcing the old ties, I also made a lot of new friends. I grew especially close to Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt. Zanjeer might not be a great hit but had given me a good headstart. Soon I shall be doing yet another movie and make my presence felt in Bollywood in a big way.
How did you handle of shooting for bilingual simultaneously? There was not much difference except that it took a little extra time for Priyanka, heroine to repeat her dialogues in Telugu and for me in Hindi. That was my first movie where I had to shoot simultaneously for two languages. Thanks to Apoorva Lakhia, he wrapped up the shoot so quickly that it seemed like a cakewalk. From being the Megastar’s son to being the Mega Power Star you have come along. Comment. Nothing really has changed. I still feel the same. I have good fan support. I enjoy all the laurels showered on me. I feel I am already placed on a pedestal, way above where I deserve to be right now. I have a lot more to accomplish. Are you into acting because you like it or because you are Chiranjeevi’s son? As a kid I was highly influenced by my dad’s career. We used to sit at the shooting spots and watch him act and dance. My penchant for films soon transformed into a passion. One day I’ve realized that acting is where my heart is. Do you emulate your dad who is obviously your role model? Having a person at home who has 30 years experience in his field is definitely advantageous to an actor like me by all means. I learned every bit of it from my dad like how an actor should carry himself and his behavior in the industry. How important is dad’s decision in choosing your films? Now he has no time to sit and talk about films. He is busy in his political field. I do inform him about interesting scripts and ask for changes that can be made. His suggestions are highly valued. What do you feel about the small budgeted films that are currently a trend in Tollywood? They gave a new lease of life to our sluggish film industry. The success rate of these small films is much better than the biggies. People should welcome more such films and encourage the directors to come up with novel scripts. After all, budget of a film should not be the criterion to pull crowds. If you were to remake your dad’s films, what would you choose? Khaidi is my all time favourite. Dad’s role was terrific. Along with it Gang Leader and Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari are a few films I would like to remake. How I wish this dream comes true!

If not into acting, in what profession would you settle down? It’s difficult for me to imagine my life without movies. But I am obsessed with cars and spend my free time reading about new arrivals. If not for films, I would surely set up an automobile industry and live with cars (smiles). Being related to top stars like Chiranjeevi, Pavan Kalyan and Allu Arjun, have you faced tough competition from anyone? Do you think you might be dominated by these actors? Not at all! They all have their own careers and I am not at all influenced by their movies. We discuss films, appreciate, give and take feedback and that’s only on a professional level. After films, we are a family and spend quality time at home.

You have the passion for horses - Where did it all start? All of us connect to some animal or the other. My father likes the lion a lot because his Raasi is Simha. There’s no reason behind my passion for horses. Somehow I love spending time with them and I don’t mind spending the entire day in my farm. The horse I rode in Magadheera is my own. We call him Badshah. The same name has been used in the film too. What about period films? Any favourite personalities. No favourites as such but many people told me that I bear a resemblance with Chatrapati Sivaji a lot. If a director comes up with a good script then I might do period films.
NA.
It is said that Geeta Arts has registered the title ‘Charan-Arjun’. How far has that come? Even we are excited about it! My uncle Aravind has registered the title on spur of the moment. We are waiting for a good script that can do justice to the roles we both will play. I love the title Charan-Arjun. Hope something works out. Who do you like - Chiranjeevi, the Megastar or Chiranjeevi, the politician? That’s quite tough! But Chiranjeevi as the Megastar was loved by all and that includes me too. I am his biggest fan ever.
Do you take Ayyappa Swami Deekshan regularly. Are you religious? Yes! I am religious and an ardent worshipper of Ayyappa Swami, Anjaneya Swami and Shirdi Sai Baba. This isn’t the first time I took up Ayyappa Deeksha. I did it earlier and would continue to do it in the future too. My dad also does it every year. Being religious takes you closer to God and you can rely on him for support. A little birdie told us that you are a trained Carnatic singer and you are an expert in singing Annamacharya Keerthanalu. Why doesn’t the world know about this? (Laughs) Your birdie is 100% right! Infact, I sung the ‘Praja Rajyam Meede’ song that was unveiled at the inaugural meeting in Tirupati. I used to attend music classes since my childhood but somehow acting was always my first love. Hence my singing ability hasn’t reached people. Very soon I shall be singing in one of my upcoming films. Just wait! You are just six films old but a sensation today with hits like Magadheera, Nayak and Rachcha! How does that feel? It is surely great! But it is responsibility too. Now that I am an actor, I cannot do things as I wish. The impulsive trait in me has taken a backseat. Before signing a film, I should think about my family, career, fans and the general audience into consideration. Directly or indirectly I influence people too. So I should be more careful.

If you could go back in time, where would you go? Back to my childhood when my dad was into films. Three actors you would love to work with? My dad, Pawan Kalyan and Tom Hanks. Your take on lip locks in cinema. Strictly a ‘no’ for me! Link-ups with heroines I have no time for such stuff. You prefer comedy or action films? Action films have always been my forte. Though I haven’t tried comedy, I would love to do a couple of them. What is fitness for you? Not just physical fitness but mental fitness too is important. Can actors be good friends? Why not? I have a bunch of best friends in Tollywood who have made a mark as heroes.

What will we find in your wallet? Money and a few cards. Best compliment you have ever received? Many say I look like my dad. Such compliments put me on cloud 9. What is the best quality about you? I love what I do!
Vizag scene I love Vizag. I have been to the city many times and always admired the people and the culture. The city moves at its own pace and the people are affectionate. Once I retire from films, I would love to settle down in Vizag. Decode red. Red for me is very courageous, bold and dashing. It is always in vogue! How do you feel being on the cover for the second time? It’s great. Message to your fans. First of all, a very happy New Year and Sankranti! Hope this year brings you a lot of happiness and success. I promise to come up with at least two films a year and keep you all happy.

WIRELESS CHARGING OPTIONS FOR IPHONE Apple has started making wireless charging devices that look skinner and here are some of the best wireless charging cases. Duracell PowerMat: It is a thin snap-on case with a lightning port and a wireless charging receiver. It is available in black or white. AccessCase and PowerMat for One are the best recommended. For extra power, you can add the snap-on battery pack that fits the AccessCase. iQi Mobile: The iQi Mobile charger is a thin Qi receiver designed to be small enough to slip underneath a soft iPhone or iPod touch case. A flexible ribbon cable runs from the iQi to a lightning connector, allowing the receiver to remain plugged in when folded behind the device.
Smarty Ring: This high quality piece of tech-jewellery frees you from searching in your bag for your phone or from reaching into your back pocket, just to find new notifications. Its bluetooth 4.0 technology lets you always get real time updates. No plugin hassles - just place your Smarty Ring and smart phone over the charger to get it charged!
AirTame wireless HDMI: AirTame is a cool dongle that connects to the HDMI port of a TV and helps to stream content from laptop onto the TV. It is a regular HDMI connector, but without any wire clutter. The best part about this arrangement is that we can connect multiple AirTames to more than one TV and stream content from one laptop to all these TVs and it is compatible to Mac OS, Linux and Windows.

A Treat from the
Beauty By V. Sarada
red | january 2014 | 102
Actor-producer couple Jeevitha and Rajasekhar approached the stunning beauty, who rightfully claimed the centre stage at the party, with a film offer. “Well, I am game for it, provided I get to play a doctor, which I am, retorted the lady, refusing to look beyond her real life role. Adding to the heady combination of beauty and brains are her humility, spirituality and that interminable urge to serve the underprivileged. That is Dr. Rajni Mukherjee. The gorgeous doctor not only illuminates the corridors of Seven Hills Hospital with her sheer glow and grace but also gives a fresh lease of life and hope to innumerable children and their parents. What brought her to the city despite her international grooming and how she turned this unfamiliar place into a home, are unravelled in her own words.

“I flow with everything in a harmonious rhythm much like a zen monk!”
EXCERPTS EARLY LIFE I was born in Alexandria, Egypt, when my father was posted as an instructor to the Egyptian, Syrian and Jordanian Air Force. My father, Wing Commander Madan Nagi, hails from Rawalpindi, Pakistan and now at 83, he is an epitome of fitness, enthusiasm, charm, wit and humour and is involved in training patient attendants. My mother Mrs. Mohini, a post graduate in psychology, a many splendored miracle and an embodiment of sacrifice and grace, is from Agra. She is tender yet tough. A strict disciplinarian, she has been my greatest teacher and a role model, who inculcated values of life and tenacity of purpose in me. It is to her wings that I owe my flight to success. I had to change eight schools starting from St. Ann’s, Hyderabad; Bal Bharati, Delhi; St. Patricks, Agra; Hutchings, Pune , Convent of Jesus & Mary, Ambala; DMS, Mysore;
Jr. College, Agra and finally the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. The frequent changes broadened my horizon and added many a dimension to my personality. I can easily adjust to any situation, place or person. I am quintessentially a global citizen and known as a good blend of the east and west. VIZAG CONNECTION My marriage to Aditya brought me to the city in 1988. It is a divine blessing as it was arranged and performed by Sri Satya Sai Baba. I bonded instantly with my mother-in-law, the late Dr. Lavanya Mukherjee, an eminent Paediatrician from the zamindari Goday family. As I was greatly drawn to this wonderful place, people and culture, I have blended well into its tapestry. I already mentioned I am a Global citizen and in spirit, an Earthling. Working at Seven Hills Hospital for the past two decades has given me a sense of satisfaction. I strive to give back in equal measure.
THE FIELD OF MEDICINE I know it was divinely orchestrated! In junior school I had an ambition to pursue Archaeology as I was passionate about Egyptology. Later my curiosity shifted to celestial dimensions, wanted to be a space scientist and study cosmology. Once my mother said, “You either wish to go down to the core of the earth or high up into the space, but why don’t you think of remaining on mother earth and study the world inside you.” Perhaps the psychologist in her could spot the great aptitude I have for medicine. That settled it and I determined it had to be only at Armed Forces Medical College. I also studied aviation medicine at the Institute of Aviation Medicine, Bangalore. Ultimately, it was my mother-in-law who made me realise that I was cut-out for paediatrics. It keeps me really young at heart.

ANY OBSTACLE FACED Satya Sai Baba, my parents and husband impressed up on me that our failures, disappointments, setbacks and problems need not retard our progress. If only we view them as ‘stepping’, rather than ‘stopping’ stones, we would sail through life with a smile. I never remember life’s challenges and never forget the insights and passion to overcome the obstacles. WOMAN IN MAN’S WORLD - TOUGH, ISN’T IT? In fact, it has been quite the contrary. In a male dominated Air Force, I earned recognition, respect and acknowledgement from my male colleagues. I believe that the world responds to the way you think, project and carry yourself and to the aura you maintain. Moreover, I am well-armed with self confidence to face such issues. FAMILY SUPPORT God blessed me with very caring and supportive families. During the tough time of MD Paediatrics study at Delhi, I had to leave my two-year-old son Siddharth behind. My husband’s encouragement, mother-in-law’s supervision and my parents’ emotional support helped my son and me go through it. I topped the university. Aditya’s support and understanding makes my journey easy. I also must acknowledge the help of my extended family which runs the household like clockwork. MOST CHALLENGING CASE The most challenging of all the cases goes back to the days of my internship. It was the case of my brother Sanjay who developed meningitis and was pronounced brain-dead. But we refused to accept it and prayed ardently. I kept a vigil at his bedside for three weeks, sleeping for just one hour a day. Baba sent us vibhuthi, which I pushed down the naso gastric tube whenever I felt he was sinking. Eventually he came out of coma and after a couple of
prayerful weeks he recovered miraculously. Now he is a successful businessman and philanthropist. MOST REWARDING MOMENT The rewarding moments have been far too many to list. Advent of Siddarth and Aditya in my life tops the list; being adjudged the best shot in firing guns at Officer Training School, Lucknow; topping MD Paediatrics exam and becoming an NABH assessor. JOB SATISFACTION Nothing can be more fulfilling than witnessing a sweet smile on a child, just out of distress and the relief on grateful parent’s faces, reaching out to the needy, empowering villagers with lifestyle skills. The passion empowers me to overcome the stresses of the day. MULTI-TASKING It comes naturally to women. While in the Air Force, I picked up many practical skills. Sometimes in a single day I take up such diverse tasks as health check-up at Teeny Boppers Play School, attending my NGO Sanskriti’s luncheon meet, rendering service at the Satya Sai Mandir and unwinding at a social event, besides the regular twice-a-day OPD with an odd emergency thrown in. It is almost like 48 hours packed into a single day! I am quite used to jumping off the treadmill/cross trainer, gulping down my meal to attend to an emergency. Meditation with which I start the day keeps me in a steady state of restful awareness. I flow with everything in a harmonious rhythm much like a zen monk! ADVICE TO NEWCOMERS I wish to see more women in paediatrics. Take it up with a healthy mix of patience, perseverance, commitment, diligence, dedication, determination, empathy and reverence, with an extra large dose of love and a sprinkle of humour.
On a practical note - involving the family, taking a long term view and not resorting to unethical shortcuts lead to success. FUTURE PLANS To take each day as it comes and evolve towards higher planes of mental consciousness and spiritual progress. I have discovered the mind has an unlimited power and I keep exploring it. WHO IS YOUR INSPIRATION OR IDOL? Undoubtedly, Bhagwan Sri Satya Sai Baba. I follow his religion of love and my life is His message! HOBBIES AND OFF WORK ACTIVITIES Reading, writing, music, dancing, learning languages, connecting with the world at large, spreading the message of unity and love. I meet my book club (Biblio) friends and discuss impacting books over tea. Books are my best friends for in them I discover thoughts and souls of people who care to share. I meet Sanskriti friends to discuss philanthropic activities like solar lighting of Araku villages, medical camps etc. I adore nature and love long drives along the picturesque coast of Vizag. HAVE YOU SET AN EXAMPLE FOR YOUR PEERS? A successful professional woman is one who perfectly balances herself, family and society. Fortunately, I am able to do it with considerable success. It gives me an immense sense of gratification to know that some of my patients were inspired to become doctors. BUCKET LIST I want to pen the books and poetry that are harboured in my head and travel a lot more. Other wishes unravel when they must!

INSPIRING QUOTES Baba’s practical, simple but profound inspirational quotes - Love All, Serve All; Help Ever, Hurt Never; Do Good, Be Good, See Good. These are my bumper sticker philosophy. YOU ARE A BEAUTY WITH BRAINS, COMMENT Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Only people who can see the innate purity, goodness and the soul behind the face, can discover the real beauty. And for this I only have deep gratitude within.

Her big beautiful deep eyes reflect her enormous confidence. Once she starts communicating, you know that here is a woman who can have her audience totally engaged. When you head a 50 -year-old-company as an MD, run the retail giant for 20 years and many such enterprises, you are certainly beyond and above those whom you come across in day-to-day life. Winner of coveted awards as the best woman entrepreneur on international platforms like TANA and SCWEC, Sailaja Kiran shows that women empowerment in India. All set to celebrate the silver jubilee of her glorious professional journey this year, she certainly has an inspiring story to narrate.

Trailblazer
FOUNDATION Sailaja, who hails from Chittur district, had nursed big dreams right from the childhood. She particularly wanted to be a doctor. However, she missed the medical seat, despite scoring 92 percent. Her father, a veterinary doctor, set up poultry industry, sensing the potential of the business. He ended up taking up the franchise of Venkateswar Hatchery and soon became the supplier for Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. She grew up watching her very diligent parents working till late hours. Their financial discipline and commitment to their work inspired the young Sailaja to a great extent. As one of the two daughters, she decided to take up her dad’s business, of course only after equipping herself an MBA degree. She seems to have a natural flair for business. With her father as the mentor, Sailaja found life in business quite promising. PLUNGE Life took a different course as Sailaja got married to the eldest son of Ramoji Rao. She never thought she would land up in Hyderabad. However, one of her pre-marriage condition was that she would be a career woman. Mr. Kiran accepted it gladly and has extended all the support to the new entrant in this mega family. Just six months after her marriage she joined then 25-year-old Margadarsi Chit Fund Company, which was running successfully. Next six months she got trained in various departments and went through every file she could lay her hands on. It gave her valuable understanding of how the business runs. Soon Sailaja found herself heading Margadarsi. She had given a new direction to the business. She realized that the company had a lot of goodwill and it was time to translate it into business. Thus she put the Margadarsi on expansion mode. Reinforcing the base, she went on opening branches all over AP, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. In 2012 the company completed 50 years and has a turnover of Rs. 7,600 cr with as many as 105 branches and over 4 lakh members. THE SWITCH OVER Her post-marriage exposure to business world was different. As a thorough pro, she has always believed in learning and says it is important to know what you are doing. This helped her carve a niche for herself in the new establishment. All of them performing within their well-demarcated slots, there is no chance of one stepping on the other’s toes. Suggestions are accepted only on their merits and interest of the organisation with no bias against or for an individual. PASSION Textile has always been her passion and texture and colours always excited her. Kalanajali, the in-house brand of the grand Ramoji Rao’s empire, was launched in 1994. Sailaja took over its reins in 1995 and has been running it.
Kalanjali’s track record is impressive as it started as a 5,000 sft. showroom and today it is spread over one lakh sft retailing space and has 17 branches in Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Vizag, Tirupati and Bangalore. “Quality is our forte and we provide the best of fashion and this sustains the clientele,” she adds. KNOTS Analyzing the growing market trends, she says, “Two decades ago there were very few players in textile industry. Today there are a number of corporate players and entrepreneurs. The market today is highly competitive and purely a buyers-driven and one has to constantly look for ways and means to be ahead of others. SUPPORT “It has been a very satisfactory journey. But it was no less than a rollercoaster ride with tight schedules, with no time to spare for the family,” says Sailaja. There are days when she has to be away from home and travel extensively. But Kiran doubles up for her without ever cribbing about it. Equally understanding are her children Brihati, Sahari and the youngest one Divija. “They were never demanding,” she adds. She, of course misses out on some pleasant albeit small tasks like helping the children with their uniforms or shoes. She tries to be with them whenever it is possible, chit-chatting and reading for them. She strives to groom them to become good human beings. She stresses that she is lucky to have in-laws who repose faith in her and she needn’t have to fight for her rights or dreams.
“Girls can perform like the boys if they are given equal opportunities. Only those families which don’t discriminate between men and women prosper."
red | january 2014 | 110
INSPIRATION She has been always a focused person and wanted to be successful in her life. Yearning for recognition is her inherent nature. She is self-driven without seeking any external support. Her father-in-law, Mr. Ramoji Rao believes in creating something permanent which has positive impact on people. She tries to emulate him. REWARDING MOMENTS Her professional life has been very rewarding. Many people ask her if is she doing any social work? She explains she is managing public fund and it’s a big responsibility, as she is accountable for every penny. She feels gratified when the investor gets his reward back. Recalling an incident she says, “My daughter on her fourth birthday said she wished to be a homemaker. That was when I felt that maybe I was not giving them adequate time. But the same girl who accompanied me to the US where I went to receive the TANA award, told a news channel that
she would like to be a successful business woman like me.” This was a touching moment for Sailaja. WOMEN EMPOWERMENT It is time we accepted the girls have equal rights to education, food, and speech. Girls can perform like the boys if they are given equal opportunities. Only those families which don’t discriminate between men and women prosper. Woman must be encouraged to stand on her feet as economic independence is vital for true empowerment. ADVICE Specialise at least in one field. Your product should have its own USP. When it comes to the customer, you should create some extra benefits be it in the pricing, discounts or quality. OFF THE JOB She is a movie buff and loves to watch classical, period, mythological movies. War time flicks excite her as she is interested in history. She is an avid reader and a great traveller.
She has toured all over except in South America and Africa. BUCKET LIST She always nurtures the dream to produce or direct a movie. However she feels it might be a difficult proposition for now as she is occupied with her business. Besides she believes that one must learn about the field before entering it. But she needs to break away from her present occupation to learn the basics of industry she loves to enter. It is practically not possible. She hopes to live her dream through one of her children. Extending her celluloid dreams she expresses she wouldn’t mind playing a role in a movie, preferably a judge, police officer, doctor or a businesswoman. The role should be with some value and message. Lastly, she wishes to give more time to grandchildren as she couldn’t pay enough attention to her own children. She wants to lend every possible support to her children, since without their support she couldn’t have achieved what she has today.

MASTER MIND
By V. Sarada
His entry to the management studies itself was so distinctive that it makes a great start to talk of Secretary and Correspondent of Alwar Das Group of Educational Institutions Sunkari Ravindra.
red | january 2014 | 116
Shoot by Dhana Vijay
He doesn’t walk into the room, just bursts in, all eager to make you comfortable, strike a conversation, build a rapport and ready to share his views. Why not? With a vast experience in varied fields like education, industry and politics, he has many a unique experience to share.
Besotted with a dream of becoming an entrepreneur, Ravindra started off rather early, associating himself with Visakha Ceramics as its director at 18. That was when he realised that going through management course was imperative to handle certain critical areas in business. Incredulously, instead of seeking admission in a business school, he went on to set up the state’s first ever autonomous institute - Integral Institute of Advanced Management (IIAM) from where he obtained his degree. Since then establishing education institutes and running them with élan has become a way of life for Ravindra who has set up 28 organisations till now and plans to open more. A quintessentially Vizagite, Ravindra is on a mission to serve the city in every possible way. “That is what is expected of me as the son of the late Sri. S. Alwar Das, former Education Minister,” he says. Though he has chosen education as an avenue to give back to society, this staunch advocate of Samaikyandhra is not averse to join active politics, if that keeps him close to the people. Absolutely simple and straightforward Ravindra wears his heart on his sleeve and speaks of a wide spectrum of issues concerning the people and education. E X C E R P T S
who I was. I, then introduced myself and my aspiration to him. He simply said, “Ravindra, let us build this institute together.” Thus I started off playing a dual role of an administrative officer and a student. It was a great opportunity to be trained by Dr. Das, who handed me down many precious nuggets of wisdom. What were your challenges? Building a business school with PGDM programme in the city was no mean task as people preferred the stamp of a university. I had to initially educate them of the importance of an institution with an industry-oriented curriculum. Now our students are highly successful with many corporates. What is your take on the changing scenario? That was the time qualified students preferred public sector over the private as a career option. Our objective was to produce thought leaders for the country and encourage them to join private enterprises. How did you withstand the stiff competition? Simple neither do I compare nor do I compete. One who is passionate about his task sees no hurdles nor does he find it stressful. It is a pleasure to meet the challenges. When you are objective-driven nothing is a hurdle.
What are the new concepts you introduced? I refuse to rest on the laurels earned. I try to be innovative, creative and different. For example, Centre for Management Technology which I opened three years ago talks of a totally unique concept - focussing on ethical leaders. Today we moved beyond the thought leaders, who may fall prey to minor temptations and do injustice to themselves. So I felt there is an urgent need for ethical leaders. The growth of ethical leaders is unlimited whereas the unethical ones is limited. We want the industry to recognise this new genre as the students go out of our portals with this unique stamp. Ethics is an attitude which has to be developed as a culture. Ours is the first institution in the country which started talking of ethical values. The other day, a professor of ISB patted me saying, “We were talking of this concept four years ago, you have already started an institution focusing on this.” What is unique about his profession? To become a doctor one should know how to cut, stitch and cure. An engineer is given brick and mortar to build. But a management guy has to start from nothing. He has to dig deep inside himself to analyse. Analytical ability leads to clarity of thought which ultimately helps you in decision- making.
What was the turning point? After my stint with Visakha Ceramics, I was all set to join Symbiosis to study MBA. Identifying the acute need for a good autonomous management school in the state, my father too wanted to promote such a facility and roped in Dr. K.K. Das, the pioneer of management studies in India. It was a very strange coincidence. Just as my father was asking Dr. Das about whom he wanted as his assistant in this venture, I walked in and he spontaneously pointed out to me saying ‘this boy’ without even knowing

Please tell us about your early life. I studied in Timpany, Dr. LB College, AVN College, Andhra University and IIAM. My father and mother Mrs. Indira never allowed us to be touched by the pomp and power that went with my father’s ministerial position. I grew up here living in Railway New Colony, Allipuram, Dwaraka Nagar, Seetammadhara and Kirlampudi. Now we are in Waltair Uplands.

Your take on students - then and now? I don’t see any change in the students’ attitude or gap in the generation. As long as you are value-based, the students are value-based. When there is a healthy interaction without a gap between the management and students, one should not have any problem at all. What is your definition of teaching? I tell them that we are not here to teach, but to facilitate you to tap your inner potential. What is your advice to the present generation? Gone are the days when people are born with silver spoons in their mouths. It is for them to build themselves as an industry which ultimately becomes an asset to the country. What is your success mantra? Being very simple, accessible and not to have airs. What kind of training did help you in facing life? I was trained to be self-reliant to face problems. Here I recall - when I was selected for steel plant ancillary among thousands of aspirants, I asked my father to give me Rs. 1 lakh to start my business. He, in his inimitable style, said, “My dear son, if I give you one lakh, you shall make one more lakh, if I give you one crore you may add another crore to it. But if I give you nothing, sky is the limit for you. If you cannot support your venture, you can quit.” That was the kind of training I was imparted. What are your assets? My contacts. Once a Brigadier friend asked me how come I had such a huge number of contacts. I told him, “Right from the brigadier to barber, I am friends with everyone - the brigadier is sitting with me and barber is just round the corner.” I vibe with all the segments of society and no one is a stranger to me. What are your future plans? Now my focus is on Greenwood International School, which will be opening very soon. This multidimensional school which includes an art village, is reachable for all and will provide that much needed consistency in grooming the students right from the beginning.
What is the principle you live on? I don’t hide from people. They may at the most ask for a favour, not our life. I am always with people and a member of every conceivable social forum and service sector in the city. What are your ‘extra-curricular’ activities? I am a strong advocate of our roots and traditions which are our strength and have been organising the annual cultural fete - MVP Ugadi Sambaralu. Now I am expanding it as MVP Ugadi Sambaralu for Vizag. We also plan Sankaranti Sambaralu. This is one way of getting people together and facilitate a healthy and rich interaction among them.
We are like two ends of same thought and work in perfect coordination: Vijaya MADE FOR EACH OTHER Knowing Vijaya and Ravindra are Leos, my urge to look at the astrologer’s say has become too strong to resist. There it is - they are a perfect and playful pair; ambitious and creative; generous and bighearted; ‘mutual respect and admiration’ is the key and above all they are fun parents. Even a nonbeliever in predictions is bound to say that there is accuracy in the reading once he meets this couple. Beautiful and ever-smiling Vijaya and extremely genial and happy-go-lucky Ravindra make a perfect picture reflecting the happy years they spent together. Daughter of Mr.K.Rama Rao, Executive Engineer and Mrs. Seshaveni, Vijaya was born in Nagarjuna Sagar where she attended St.Joseph’s School. Though lived in a secluded township, Vijaya had a good exposure to arts and learnt Bharatanatyam and music. Later she continued her schooling in Holy Mary, Hyderabad. She earned a degree from College of Home Science. “My forward looking father always insisted that girls be given equal opportunities and encouraged us to step out into the world to pursue education. That was how I could study
in Tirupati staying in a hostel. Later I joined Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad as a consultant Nutritionist and was instrumental in building its dietary structure.” It was the friendly neighbourhood love that paved the way to the marriage of Vijaya and Ravindra. “I became close to him through his sister who happens to be my friend. We had a decade-long courtship before we tied the knot in 1989.” How was the shift to Vizag? Rather smooth, I came here thinking that I would sit back and relax or take up a job in one of the local hospitals. My father-in-law, who wanted me to take over the management of one of his educational institutes, convinced me to go for further studies. I was appointed as the dean of MVP Public School after I obtained a doctorate in education. How was the initiation in the new field? My father-in-law was my mentor. He used to indirectly teach me by taking me to meetings and involving me in correspondence. What is your own contribution to the field? I started Samata College with just four students and now we have a whopping 900 of them. Ensuring high quality education and clean environs are our hallmark. How do you share the work space with your husband? Ours is a bright and vibrant relationship. Since we both work towards a single goal, we have a lot more to share. We allow each other adequate freedom to take independent decisions. Yes, we have a healthy competition too. What are your future plans? My father-in-law has given us a huge platform and we have to work 200 per cent to come anywhere near to do justice to it. What is the best compliment you have received? My father-in-law told my father that he was very happy with the way I adopted to the new environs and running the institutions. What is the most memorable incident? Of course, my marriage to Ravindra.

CHIPS OFF THE OLD BLOCK
By Ranita Ray DIVYA’S ROLE Divya, the eldest daughter of Vijaya and Ravindra, completed her education in electronics communication and went to the US to get a feel of the universities over there for a month. But, her inner call convinced her that her heart lies back in India where she can do much better by contributing her ideas to her family business.
Her ideas Her foundation was excellent, thanks to Timpany School where she studied. She picked up the best of its systems, besides adopting the finest features of various schools outside Vizag. This gave her the understanding of the prerequisites of a good school. She advocates a good balance between education and extracurricular activities. Students shouldn’t restrict themselves to books, but should be exposed to right essence of everything, like communication skills, public speaking etc. This makes them confident and they can express themselves better. Future plans Schools have now become the passion of this 23-year-old girl. They are great platforms, where one can mould the children at a tender age with right values and skills and she is enjoying the process thoroughly. She nurses the dream to open more number of branches. Brimming with futuristic ideas, Divya proposes to launch an international school. With inputs and guidance from her parents, she is all set to take the next plunge in this year. DEEPIKA’S ROLE Just 19, Deepika, the second daughter of Vijaya and Ravindra, has a clear vision when it comes to her career plan. Presently pursuing her BBM first year in GITAM University, she wishes to join family business in 2019. Management is the field she is interested in and believes this will help her carve her own niche. It is her will, sans parental pressure to choose her path. Her ideas Management is an indispensable part of any field, be it education, hospitality or medicine. The demand for this subject is only going to grow in coming years. Her education in this line will help her to bring necessary changes as and when time demands. Future plans Though Deepika is a student by herself, she takes part in the family discussion and gives her opinions. She has her own plans relating to their business and expressed her wish to introduce more social activity for the students when she takes up her share of responsibility. Involvement of the students in various fine skills is imperative and their exposure is crucial for their holistic development.

VIJAYA SAYS He is very understanding. I don’t have to be vocal about anything, he just reads my mind and the next moment it is done. We respect each other and give space too. He is very down- to- earth and helpful. Whenever someone comes to him with a problem, he goes out of his way to help him. On work front, any task he takes up he doesn’t rest till he finishes it. He is the decision maker at home and at work too. He thinks a lot before deciding on any matter, once he decides there is nothing which can change his mind. He just goes ahead. Till now I haven’t seen him taking any wrong decision or going wrong. Even my daughters are convinced and say whatever he says it happens; so three of us follow it blindly. Although he takes the decision, blessed with lots of patience I am the one to implement it. Perhaps that is how sharing work too, helped us develop a strong bonding.
DIVYA SAYS I am a replica of my dad. Being daddy’s gal, I am more inclined towards him. He has been my mentor throughout. The usual perception of a father or should I say traditional father, is that he is the provider and protector. But in our case, it is totally different with our father outsteps that prescribed role and is involved in every aspect of our growth. Living in Vizag and studying here, the kind of exposure and self-confidence I have today are all because of him. I like the way he strikes a balance between personal and professional life. He lives life to the fullest, at work he is completely engrossed and focused. After work he knows how to unwind. This is how one has to live life; one can slog and work dedicatedly without cutting off from personal life. I have picked up this quality too from him and perhaps that is why I can still enjoy with my friends despite my busy schedules at work. He never tells me how to live; as he always lives and let me watch him do it.
DEEPIKA SAYS My dad is a great speaker and hearing to him itself is an education. I really wish I can speak like him and have as much confidence as he has. As a father he is just a sweetheart. When it comes to his daughters, he is a very emotional person. As an educationist and businessman he is very serious and aggressive in his approach. One of the traits I admire in him is his natural role-switching ability. The same man, when on the job, is absolutely dedicated, once he is off the job; he is a completely chilled out person. If I have to ask for anything, it is no one but my dad I go to. He gave me the greatest gift anyone could give: his trust. He doesn’t impose his decisions on us. As one says, a dad is someone who holds you when you cry, shines with pride when you succeed, and has faith in you even when you fail; he defines every word so perfectly.

HE CLICKS LIFE, CAPTURES SUCCESS
ll set to celebrate the silver jubilee in the world of photo and videography, V.V. Ramana is a name Hyderabad proud of. Popularly known as Villart Ramana, this veteran has built his name and fame purely on his experience and experimentation. His forte being wedding videos besides portraits, portfolios, kids, fashions and industrial and many other genres of photography - it won’t be wrong to call him a legend. The popular maxim goes - “Success is sweet and sweeter if long delayed and gotten through many struggles and defeats.” His biography reflects it and Ranita Ray records the eventful journey
E X C E R P T S Please throw some light on your early life My father was a politician. However, I never liked the political atmosphere at home and to escape it, I ran away to my aunt’s place. I was never very bright in my studies. Only on my sixth attempt I could pass my 10th grade. Realizing my unwillingness to go back to the village, my aunt sent me to Hyderabad. Here I started my career in a small shop of Usha Fan dealers but soon lost it as it was shut down and joined a machine tools company. Although I started as a shop assistant, I got promoted as the store supervisor purely by the dint of my hard work. This, however, couldn’t be digested by my co-workers. Out of jealousy they thrashed me physically and I had to leave this job. What is the turning point? Perhaps destiny had its own plans. Since childhood I was very fascinated by videography. But really what triggered my passion was when a video camera caught my attention on one fine afternoon when I was in a friend’s house. I borrowed it, even though I was not aware of its operation and started my videography journey in 1990 by shooting my first wedding video on the same evening. The respect which people gave me as the videographer inspired me to give it a serious thought. I came back to Hyderabad and did a crash course. Now I had to buy a video camera of my own which was nothing less than Rs. 30,000. It was an impossible figure for me. Back in those days this profession was looked down upon. Thus leave alone encouragement, I faced all kinds of resistances from my family. But as it is said the ‘will’ finds its ‘way’. My uncle helped me with only condition that I have to pay the interest. I started my own company in the name of Shreedevi Graphics after my late sister’s name. From a humble beginning of shooting religious videos for just Rs. 300, my business has crossed many successful milestones till 1993. Triumph and Trounce I opened a branch of Shreedevi Graphics in Kakinada. While my competitors were quoting Rs. 1,200 to cover a wedding, I used to charge Rs. 3,000. Despite this, my business was at its peak, until the end of 1995
when I faced a setback and had to shut it down. However, I was unstoppable. Thus, next year in tie-up with a friend from Hyderabad, I opened a new studio - ‘Linarp Shreedevi Graphics’. Since he knew photography and I was good at videography, we complemented each other. Within a span of six to eight months the entire Hyderabad was talking about us and we were earning Rs. 30,000 50,000 per month. But soon after his marriage things went bitter and we split our ways.” What is the brand ‘Villart’? Even though I had interest in photography I didn’t have the technical knowledge. However, I realized videography and photography are interdependent.
Now I was on a hunt for a place to open my own studio. I zeroed in on one studio at Banjara Hills road number 12. Surprisingly, the existing studio there was named Shreedevi Studio. I feared to continue with this name, it might take away the reputation I have earned with my own brand ‘Shreedevi Graphics’. After considering many options I finalized Villart - Villa my surname with art as suffix. I hired an experienced photographer and with a team of six other members, ‘Villart’ came into existence in 1996. What are the major hurdles you faced? My success, however, like my previous stints didn’t last long. Three years later I faced a major financial crisis which left me with heavy debts. Despite my
frequent failures, God was always very kind to me in giving the right break at the right time. This time it came through a personality development course which motivated me thoroughly. For months together I introspected to find out my own shortcomings. I realized even though I was very quality conscious, I lacked a target as well as commitment to my work. Working on my weaknesses, I decided to re-launch Villart Studio. Many people advised me to give up that name calling it jinxed. But I stuck to my decision and re-opened it in its present location. Today it is a landmark in the city.
How are you different from others? I am always ahead of my counterparts. I had my own email and website way back in 1996. In 2002 I was the first one to own the Rs. 3 lakh-digital SLR camera D 100. I adopt new innovation. Only a few international news channels are using that equipment which we use for our wedding shoots. However, I make no bones about my technology, software or equipment I am using. Perhaps that is why people in this industry treat me as pioneer. They follow me, keeping a tab on my next move. For example, I have ordered a Hasselblad camera which costs almost Rs. 40 lakh and till date none is using it in the state.
What are the changes you observed over the years? People are concerned only about camera not lenses. The lack of awareness about it saddens me. Every year we get around 500 enquiries but we cover only 15 weddings. Our motto is to do quality work rather than make money. But if one looks at the latest trend a lot of youngsters from engineering, management or software background are entering this field. By clicking thousands of pictures, out of which perhaps only 10 are good, they are posting on social media like FB, adding a story to it and calling it ‘candid photography’. Common people being naïve are going gaga over it. With a low tariff and the hype created, those amateur photographers are undoubtedly getting more business. This, however, is affecting the professionals adversely who despite using original equipment, authorized software are being branded as expensive and losing out on deals. What are the limitations of the industry? Technology changes every six months. There is an upgraded version of the same camera and equipment is released by the company. Once you lay your hands on the new one, the earlier one looks obsolete. In process of exchanging the old with new, one ends up losing more than 50% of the investment. But there is no other go but to fall in this trap. That is how compared to market rates, my charges are higher. Every good thing comes with a price, doesn’t it? How do you keep yourself updated? Process of learning is unending. Every day I spend two hours to learn new technique and software. I have nearly 400 books on photography. Each new wedding season, I want to introduce something new in photography and videography. With elections round the corner, I am focusing on political portrait too, be the poses, lightings, locations etc. What are your future plans? I want to work till 2020 and then share my expertise and experience to help the newcomers. Since 2002, I have been organizing annual photography exhibitions. I want to continue it to give the talents a platform to showcase their work. I also want to author a book on photography and videography.

Tulasi - Wife It was an arranged marriage. Since 2007, everyday it’s been a new journey with him. Although, my father had some initial objection to the alliance due to the age-difference, he relented as I liked his nature. He is a jovial man and his company is very pleasant. The memorable moments we spent together were of our honeymoon in Darjeeling. I never forget that trip. After that we hardly get any time together. Hence the only thing I ask for is time with him. His demands in life are very simple. Professionally he is the number one in the state. I like his determination that helped him scale new heights. His grit is such that he does not sleep until he finishes his work. Both our kids, Tejashree and Riyan are very fond of him. Whatever times he gets, he tries to spend and play with them. Though he tells I am the leader in the house, in fact he is the ultimate leader.
Teju - Daughter He is my best friend. He never scolds me. Only mama scolds me. He gets gifts for me. I love chocolates and he gets me many of them. He plays with me and Riyan too. He is the best daddy.
Riyan - Son I am his bullet. He hugs me, kisses me and plays with me. I play with my toys with him. He takes me on his car. He loves mama and akka.

GAI PAIN FROM

ith health becoming the focal point, many of us, regardless of age, have started hitting the gym. It is also common that people go for workouts following the movie stars and the methods downloaded from social networking media. We must realize that each of us has our own type of body and the workout should be designed according to it.
It is also a fact that when you go to gym for the first time or after a long gap, your body feels sore. Post-exercise muscle pain is inevitable. But many don't know that this type of muscle stiffness or ache is normal, actually a sign of improving fitness and strengthening muscle and good for the body. It doesn't last long. Don't let this pain deter you from workouts. Why do muscles feel sore after exercise? Sore muscles after physical activity, also known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is common and occurs when you begin a new exercise programme or change exercise routine or increase the duration or intensity of regular workout. How long does it last? DOMS, which ranges from mild to severe, lasts for three to five days. This pain should not be confused with any kind of pain you might experience during the exercise. red | january 2014 | 132
There is no one simple way to treat DOMS as nothing is proven to be 100% effective. The best treatment is not to stop the workout and at least do a little bit of stretches and simple body weight exercises to let the muscles stretch and relax. Simple tips Take the guidance of an expert before starting workouts. Avoid self-training as you can't observe and correct your own self in case of a wrong movement. To reduce post-exercise soreness
Use Active Recovery: Easy lowimpact aerobic exercise increases blood flow and checks muscle soreness. Go for it as a part of cool down.
Rest and Recover: Simply wait and let soreness peter out.
To prevent soreness:
Warm-up is a must.
Cool down with gentle stretching after exercise.
Avoid making sudden major changes in the type and duration of exercise.
Increase exercise time and intensity gradually.
Pain or soreness can also be a sign of an injury. Consult a physician if it persists for a week.

e wants to keep his rounds restricted from Theatre to Theatre. To be clinically accurate, Adarsh Annapareddy wants to run his life on twin passions - medicine and films. Born to a doctor couple - Dr. A.V. Gurava Reddy, wellknown orthopaedic surgeon and Dr. Bhavani, an equally sought-after gynaecologist, Adarsh has quite obviously taken to medical studies. He is right now pursuing MS in orthopaedics in Sancheti Hospital, Pune, after obtaining his MBBS degree from Hyderabad Medical College in 2010. His sister Kavya is studying her final year MBBS in Manipal. Adarsh’s interest in films was kindled in the childhood itself when Kavya was chosen for a Telugu movie Little Soldiers when she was barely 3. In fact, he himself had acted in movies like Little Soldiers, Amma Cheppindi, Eega and some TV episodes of Amrutam. He had also dubbed for one of the three main characters in Prayanam. Adarsh has also tried his hand at one more crucial aspect of filming, directing a spoof called Misconception even when he was doing his medical internship, which drew critical acclaim. Stating that his favourite actors are Venkatesh in Telugu, Aamir Khan in Bollywood and Will Smith and Tom Hanks in Hollywood, Adarsh says his favourite films are The Departed, Star Wars, Reservoir Dogs, Hello Brother (Nagarjuna’s) and Lagaan. Sports is yet another arena which inspires young Adarsh who cites cricket and tennis as his favourite games. He admires cricketers Dravid, Ganguly, Sachin, Kumble, Laxman and the tennis player Federer. A diehard fan of A.R. Rahman, he plays guitar. He wants to settle down in Hyderabad and would never want to leave India. After his MS, he wants to do a course in filmmaking and loves to assist any of his favourite directors and wants juggle his time between the two professions. A perfect film buff, Adarsh pens his well-evolved observations to describe the typical Indian audience, very aptly calling them Scribbling of a Cinephile. OVER TO ADARSH I have always believed that there are three types of people in the world. The first kind is he who doesn’t like watching movies. That is the strangest thing I can imagine but somehow it is true. There actually are some people out there who just don’t get it. I can’t imagine a life like that, but I have no bones to pick with them; to each his own! The second type, (unfortunately the majority), is the one who enjoys movies as “time pass”, as a way to while away some time, more importantly a good option to hang out with friends.
He is the type who, within a second, can dismiss three years of blood and sweat of a director as a complete waste of his three hours. He is the one who would rather download the movie and watch it on his laptop than spend time and money to go and watch the same in a theatre. Even if that movie is ‘Avatar’ or ‘Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol’ which were literally made for the large screen experience. He traipses into the theatre 10 minutes into the movie, answers his phone during intense scenes and squirms around uneasily in his seat when there is some dialogue going on instead some hardcore action. As you can tell, this is my least favourite group. The third type is probably considered by many as the one with all the nerds, geeks and weirdos. The ones would rather go for a movie alone so that they don’t have the obligation of talking to their friends or waiting for them while they are buying something to eat. For these guys, the movie theatre is everything. They can’t even imagine watching the same at home. He wouldn’t even dream of missing the beginning of the film and won’t leave his seat until the last credits have rolled. He may never make it to class or work on time but he will leave for the Cineplex at least an hour in advance. When the movie is over he doesn’t just go home and sleep, he thinks about it all the way home, he analyzes it, he marvels at it, he feels disgusted by it and he takes it home with him. He unabashedly cries when a heart wrenching tale unfolds in front of him. That is whom I call a film buff. red | january 2014 | 159
