his first issue of the second volume of red is an important milestone in our journey to excellence. Inspired by dreams, we set out on this challenging albeit beautiful path just a year ago. A chic lifestyle magazine from Vizag, a city inching towards its metro goal, was looked at with considerable curiosity, if not apprehension by one and all. However, by presenting well-worked out articles on a wide range of topics touching almost all facets of society, we seem to have won over the hearts of readers, patrons and advertisers alike. The fabulous gala that marked its launch itself was the talk of the town for days. The longest flag, we unveiled broke the world records and won us nationwide accolades. Milestones are also the thresholds of transition. Realising this fact, we are taking a capital move of including Hyderabad in our journey. This will facilitate us to reach wider audience and two cities in one shot. In this altered scenario, we have to re-orient ourselves and acquire a new visage. We have to enrich our content by including topics pertaining to Hyderabad. While doing so, I shall strive to give equal importance to the metro and soon-to-be metro. I hope red will be received with equal warmth and zeal in Hyderabad as it was welcomed in Vizag.

handu, the MD sir, announced the plans to launch red in Hyderabad!! I still can’t forget the expression on the faces of my team members. Where did I last see it? Oh yes, it was in that laddu phoota ad of Cadbury. On this sweet note, we set out, vowing to rock the issue. On this occasion, I must mention three women who are with me in all my endeavours. Beginning with Sarada, Editor-in-Chief, I must say we are lucky we don’t keep a cane in the office. Or else you can imagine our plight as she has no intentions of sparing the rod and spoiling us. Generally, she is a listener, playing the role of an observer. We get to see her real self, when it comes to editing. Getting an article passed through her in itself is a big achievement for the team, including me. But Sarada, you are my guide and philosopher. You tend to project a serious image, but you are a sweetheart. To complement this, I have two monkeys in my team. ‘Oh God!!!’are the two words that come to my lips as He is my only saviour many a time, when I have to deal with these two. Ranita is our senior feature writer but is no less than a nursery kid. Always laughing and spreading joy, but also ready to take it away by saying,“Divya, no mood, not today plzzz!! ”When I tell her it’s important, pat comes the question, “What is in it for me?” I have to bribe this baby with whatever little things she asks for. But she is always there when needed and I can without doubt say red is incomplete without her. She has been with us right from the very beginning. Kalyani, sub-editor, generously contributes to the rising noise pollution. The one and only voice heard in the office is that of this former RJ. Hyper active is the word to describe her. She is my best film critic and everything related to movies is best handled by her. She hates to write serious stuff. I insist on her doing that, just to see her cute crying face. She begins with no, but ends up giving the best. Yes, she is the secret of my energy.
Coming to the anniversary topics, if our readers were curious to know who would make it to the prestigious cover, our team went into a frenzy even before our MD completed uttering the name. Swati (Ashta Chemma) was right. Maheeesh the name itself is full of vibrations that make you tipsy without any drink. Imagine the high it gave us, doing the story. Matching Mahesh’s grandeur is our red life section. Live life king size - a perfect example for this would be the one and only Mr. GVK Reddy. His projects and achievements are endless. We call him a king but he calls himself a simple man. An hourlong chat with him was equal to browsing an encyclopedia. Want to know the success mantra and a perfect definition of life? Then do not miss a single word said by this magnificent man. An icing on the cake is the red sports. Who is not fond of racing, especially when the racer himself is wowwww!!! This is what my writers said. Little wonder, his naughty smile made their hearts skip a beat. I still remember them saying “He’s just 22. Hard luck. Too young to flirt around!” Yes, this striking racer is a Vizagite and recently won the Nurburging Championship. Ok, I understand your anxiety, rush to the segment to know more about this hunk!! Lot many surprises are waiting for you. I am sure red anniversary issue will remain very special in your hearts. I convey my heartfelt thanks to my team for helping me bring out 12 successful issues and to the readers for their support and cooperation. I hope they would extend the same love forever. “Modern technology, owes ecology, an apology” - Alan. M. Eddison, Director at Green Earth Affairs Nearly 800 million people in India do it several times, everyday - talk on a cell phone. It does appear completely harmless. Otherwise we wouldn’t have such a whopping number of phones or connections. But little do the users know that every time they make a call or receive one, the cell phone emits low levels of radiation which is dangerous enough to cause migraine, brain cancer and many behavioural problems.
BRAIN DRAINER
Such kind of tissue heating is surely quite alarming. Drying of fluid around the eyes and brain joints, sleep disruption, migraine, amnesia, lack of concentration, infertility issues and miscarriages are a few maladies that can strike avid cell phone users. Pregnant women especially need to be extra careful because the
On the other hand, mobile towers are literally converting the country into an open microwave oven. With companies choosing to install higher intensity towers to cut costs evidently compromising on public safety, the picture turns murkier. Researchers in the country also found that mobile phone masts are fatal for sparrows, honeybees and fruit-bearing trees too. But if we have lived with TV and radio towers for decades, why should radiation become harmful only now? TV and radio towers emit non–ionised radiations that hardly pose any risk. But cell phone radiation is ionic in nature and is awash with lethal atoms. The amount of radiation that the planet is exposed to is anyone’s guess. Kalyani Rajashekar digs deeper into mobile pollution only to find out that progressing technology is a blow to the human race and the nature, alike! A MAN IN DANGER Before you hold your phone closer to your ear or keep it under the pillow while you sleep, just think! The first part of our body that gets affected is the brain. Harmful radiation from cell phones and towers kills the enzymes in the brain and increases the electrical activity by almost 50%. Adding a new angle to the ongoing studies on the perils of cell phones, the World Health Organisation (WHO) says that this kind of radiation is possibly carcinogenic and could be root cause of brain tumours. The evidence of cell phone dangers is still lacking because many of the biggest threats like cancer takes decades to show up. By then, the damage is done. red | july 2012 | 50
radiations can knock off the cells in amniotic fluids there by killing the baby in the womb itself. People living close to cell phone towers are at a higher risk which is much worse than being exposed to smoking. Medical experts opine that today’s teenagers could actually go senile in the prime of their lives. Most of the radiations are directly absorbed by the skin on the head and other superficial tissues resulting in an increase in the brain’s temperature.
NATURE AT RISK The picture looks like a mind-boggling horror flick but it is no exaggeration that the love for mobile phones can cause massive food shortage in the world. The radiation from handsets is lethal not just for the human race but also for honeybees and trees too. A couple of years ago, beekeepers noted that the number of bees was fast depleting and crops were not being pollinated on time.
This bizarre phenomenon started in the US and Britain but is now extensively seen in central Asia. The theory behind this is scary! Cell phone radiation interferes with the navigation systems of honeybees and these creatures cannot find their way back home. Moreover, they cannot even locate crops and tend to stray away from green pastures. This curbs the natural process of pollination which again affects food production. Similarly, the distressing decline of house sparrows in our country is again attributed to cell tower radiation. Scientists revealed that electromagnetic waves impinge on the reproductive systems of sparrows and the microwave heat from telecommunication masts kills bird embryos. If this remains unchecked, soon the house sparrow and honeybee too will be a part of the list of the extinct.
Children are prone to many a healthrelated problem if they are exposed to the radiation. Use the phone wisely if you wish to live longer.” Prof P.V.V. Prasada Rao, Dept. of Environmental Sciences, Andhra University
“Unfortunately, we don’t have enough evidence. But there have been many studies that show some link between the declining number of honeybees and sparrows and cell phone radiation. Natural pollination gets hampered and food productivity
comes down. The man’s negligence in disposing of old and damaged cell phones further aggravates the problem. We don’t have proper recycling units and as a result, they get mixed up with the regular waste. All the chemicals like arsenic, antimony, lead, copper; zinc and beryllium, which are used in making cell phones, are absorbed into the soil, killing fruit-bearing trees and crops. If this continues, India and China will suffer the most. Mobile companies too should take initiatives to check this practice.” A
PROTECT YOURSELF
EXPERTS SAY
Cell phones cannot be chucked away just because the radiation is harmful as they play an important role in communication. All you can do is to prevent them from bombarding your body. Here are a few tips to keep the danger at bay.
Dr. N. Sujatha, MD Radiation Oncologist, Prof. & HoD, Dept. of Radio Therapy, KGH, Vizag
Always use a speaker or a headset. Prefer texting to calling. SMSes are better alternatives. Don’t use your phone in closed spaces like elevators, cars, trains and planes. They draw more power and emit more radiation in enclosed spaces.
“A leading daily recently published that there were more number of mobile phones than toilets in our country. In fact, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) categorized cell phone radiation as ‘potentially hazardous’ to the human race. Behavioural problems and headaches are commonly seen in people who talk on the phone for more than an hour everyday. Similarly, you might be at risk if you have been using the cell phone for more than 12 years.
Keep the phone away from your body. Leave it in your purse, briefcase or laptop bag but not in your pocket which is pressed against you. Never leave your phone under the pillow while you are sleeping. Use a night table. Don’t use your phone while the battery is getting charged or if it is hot. Allow it to cool down and remove the electric connection before you use it. Don’t allow children to play with these devices for long durations. They are at a higher risk of getting affected.

ETHICAL INTRUDERS
The White Rabbit put on his spectacles. “Where shall I begin, please your Majesty?”he asked. “Begin at the beginning,” the King said gravely, “and go on till you come to the end: then stop.” – Alice in Wonderland
Today, computers enjoy unparalleled success virtually in every field of work, where information from all over the world could be uploaded, stored and accessed easily. With the advent of internet, the globe entered the digital age with great aplomb and awe, inspiring revolutionary ideas and improving lives across cultures. But then again, like the proverbial Yang cannot manifest without the Yin, out of the woodwork began to crawl ou tquite a few defects. Ungainly, red | july 2012 | 52
as they are, they began to question the otherwise flawless perfection of the computer. Just how secure was your information in a computer? Could the coded vaults of mystery be infiltrated? In an infinite digital world that has no beginning or an end (as in the story of Alice), is your most crucial information safe? As a heralding answer to the inevitable questions, into the fray galloped the knights in shining armour, only that the armour here comprised more modern attire, accessorised with
a pair of intelligent glasses in most cases! As trained geeks that talk computer language, Ethical Hackers are equal to the police in Cyber world, protecting, watching and safeguarding all the information. The term ‘Hacker ethic’is attributed rightfully to Steven Levy, author of Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution. The generic phrase, derived from its commendable
philosophy that has originated from the illustrious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), seeks to describe the moral values and ethics that were standard among the hacker community during the 50s and 60s. The word ‘hack’ also owes its origin to the technocratic lingo at MIT, which originally stood for the regular pranks played at the college. Since the main ethics, according to Levy, were limited to general access and free information that are bound to improve the overall quality of life, the elements of Hacker ethics did not have much to do with computer security. However, as the hackers were all extremely supportive of free and open source software, the exchange of knowledge was tremendous and hugely beneficial, enabling these elite individuals to learn and test their knowledge.
are certified hackers that help organisations with their cyber-security needs. A ‘Black Hat’ on the other hand also stands for a hacker, albeit one who has gone bad! Black Hats put their hacking skills to use for malicious reasons, violating computer security for personal or no gain whatsoever. More often than not, it is the Black Hats that are behind cyber crimes that include stealing sensitive data, uploading harmful viruses, hacking email and online bank accounts and revealing personal and organisational secrets to the general public.
an expert in at least one professional computer application like Java, C++. Knowledge in the functioning of UNIX is also mandatory. If you have a certificate or diploma in hacking, you can be sure of landing a plum offer!
Apart from White and Black Hats, there are also the Grey Hats and the Blue Hats, who are all hackers as well, with different motives and purposes. A Grey Hat is one who hacks into computers and networks just for the heck of it and may warn individuals and companies on the vulnerability of their security systems. They then offer to fix the cracks in the systems as well, in return for a small fee. Grey Hats, being a bit of both White and Black are an unpredictable lot, with their intentions changing from being indifferent to becoming harmful according to the given situations. Blue Hats, on the other hand, are hackers that do not belong to a particular
• Jodo Institute, Delhi
The full credit, however, for coining the phrase goes to IBM, which has started using the word to describe those individuals whose job was to hack into systems for the purposes of testing the immunity of computers and improving internet security. An ethical hacker, as the description goes, is a computer security expert specialised in penetration-testing, apart from other testing methodologies. Since they seem no different from other hackers who can outdo the various levels of security to access information in a computer, Ethical Hackers are often mistaken for unlawful individuals with criminal intentions. Nothing could be farther than the truth! As the name suggests, they are conscientious professionals whose job is to try and gain access to computers to check their security measures and remove unwanted and otherwise malicious programs that threaten to disclose sensitive data.

Harish, Certified Ethical Hacker from AFCEH opines, “Programming skills and keen interest for computer applications will always help a hacker. Generally one undergoes three stages in the course and by the end of it one develops a distinct taste for white hacking. The hacker works as a security administrator and analyst where his primary job is to analyse the website and secure it from hackers actually known as crackers. Within a couple of years, ethical hackers would be in great demand all over the world. Their future seems bright and vibrant and ever expanding.” C (With inputs from Urmila, Nikhita and Dipika)
Owing to the strong, unsaid, yet understood code of conduct among the White Hats, the community of responsible ethical hackers grew over the decades. Today, a number of IT companies have their own teams of ethical hackers, whose skills are put to use exclusively towards the security and improvement of their own systems.

WHAT IS THE WINNING POINT? By V. Sarada
red | july 2012 | 56
T
here is a political calm, in this case, not before but after the storm of by-elections that lashed the state last month. Congress managed to win only two out of the 18 Assembly seats, while the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) of Kadapa MP, Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, won 15, besides one Lok Sabha seat and TRS bagged one seat.
Right now there is an uncanny quiescence. While the winner is left to celebrate his thumping success behind the high walls of Chanchalguda jail, the battered parties are busy licking their wounds and convalescing in their self-imposed seclusion. The media too seem to have switched their attention to the ensuing presidential elections. Electoral predictions were many, some based on figures and facts and some hypothetical. While pre-poll forecasts spoke about poll trends who the winner would be; the voter’s mood etc, the results led to speculations over paradigm shifts and polarization. With Jagan’s party gaining majorly, there was a talk of
large scale defections from other parties to YSRCP. Though there were instances of MLAs crossing the floor and indications of further defections to the YSRCP, no major damage was done either to the ruling party or the opposition parties yet. However, it would be untrue to say that the by-poll results did not press the panic button in the Congress both at the Centre and in the state. The distress is quiet palpable though the ruling and opposition parties tried to play down Jagan’s victory as a flash in the pan. They also dubbed it as the outcome of the sympathy wave that swept the state, especially after he was arrested.
...a leader would not gain just by knowing the pulse of the people. He has to make them believe that he is one among them. That’s what precisely Jagan did.
red | july 2012 | 57
Some even believe that charges were framed against Jagan and the arrest was made to keep him away from the poll drive. However, the YSRC campaign managers played their cards cautiously and roped in Jagan’s mother Vijayamma (Hon. President of the party) and sister Sharmila to continue the campaign, picking it up from where Jagan had left. The strategy worked well. This is where one has to pause and ponder over the priority of the electorate. What are the factors that impact the voter’s choice? History stands witness to the fact that it has always been a knee-jerk reaction, aimed at throwing out the ruling party (the anti-incumbency factor in common parlance). Or sometimes it is purely sentiment or ‘tear politics.’ If getting carried away by a stream of emotions is the voter’s wont, riding the high tide of sympathy has been the privilege of our politicians. Jagan has done well in keeping the memory of his father’s tragic death well-kindled in the people’s mind through his protracted Odarpuyatra (which he took up to console the bereaved families of the people who died of shock, hearing the news of YSR’s death) and by unveiling innumerable statues of the departed leader across the state. red | july 2012 | 58
Jagan also did not let people forget the welfare schemes his father introduced. In a stark contrast, the present government miserably failed to popularise its own welfare measures. Moreover, it also made a meek attempt to convince people that the projects which were being flaunted as the YSR’s exclusive endeavours were in reality crafted by the Congress party itself. This argument too did not cut ice with the voter. A very typical trait of Indian voter is that he looks for short term gains, ignoring the actual and valid issues. More often than not, he goes to ballot following his allegiance to a particular caste or religion. Dynasty is yet another dominating factor. One may attribute this to the human urge to look up to either supernatural power or superior human being to be guided at every stage of life. With the remnant air of monarchy still hanging over us, we naturally look up to the son of ‘king’ as the heir apparent. There cannot be a better testimony to this than the 150 plus signatures that endorsed Jagan’s succession to YSR’s chair, soon after the latter’s death. With people accustomed to the family rule both at the Centre and in states, it is only natural that they did not mind accepting Jagan as the political successor to his father.
Jagan is here to stay as long as he manages to keep YSR alive in people’s memory. With these many varied impacting factors working on his mind, the voter fails to see either the good or bad of the contender. Do antecedents of the contestant really matter? Moreover, if India earned the dubious distinction of being a top ranker on the list of world’s corrupt nations, at the national level Andhra Pradesh earned a similar tag. Explicably, the voter is left with little or no choice. It is no more a question of preferring the good to the bad but choosing the best among the worst. And he asks, “Who is not corrupt?” By voting overwhelmingly for Jagan, the voters sent a clear message that they are desperately seeking a change of guard in the state and they did not mind what quarter it came from. The voter is ready to forgive Jagan’s‘ trespasses’ and seemed to have asked, “So what, even if he has misused power for personal gains?” He felt that it was not a reason enough to reject YSRCP. Surprisingly, Congress, as well as TDP accepted the YSRCP as their main rival and did not acknowledge each other as a formidable rival during the campaign. This too has indirectly
contributed to Jagan’s win, as his was the name most heard around. Their smear campaign failed to counter the goodwill he has built among masses by being with them day in and day out for nearly three years. It is pertinent to mention here that media too contributed their mite to Jagan’s victory, albeit inadvertently. While the electronic media panned their cameras 24/7 on the captive leader, the print media left no stone unturned to track down his movements to the last detail. Whatever may be the motive, this uncalled for attention, seemed to have worked well for Jagan. Though one cannot give a plausible explanation to the voter’s mood and predict whom he would choose, the recent by-elections did establish that a leader would not gain just by knowing the pulse of the people. He has to make them believe that he is one among them. That’s what precisely Jagan did. F red | july 2012 | 59

eady Mix Concrete (RMC) machines spin in full speed, cranes go up and down and the building activity seems to be back in full swing, constantly changing the Vizag skyline. The real estate sector is all smiles for obvious reasons. Three essential progress indicators - launch of new projects, bulge in volumes and most importantly price stability bring glad tidings for builders. However, all the action seems to be on the outskirts. V. Sarada meets a few ace developers of the city to capture their mood.

“Variegated residences seem to be the requirement of swelling denizens of Vizag. As it is restricted by unending sea on one side and ranges of hills on the other, the city, even if it bursts at seams, cannot spill out into a perpetual stretch. Yet another daunting task for the builder is to provide homes that don’t wreck the verdant beauty of the Eastern Ghats. All these challenges notwithstanding, there is never a dull moment here,” stresses Mr. Raju Srinivas, President, Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI), Vizag chapter. red | july 2012 | 62
“Walk to work, Walk to school, Walk to play and Walk to shop” is what we need now. Even the city’s lifestyle is undergoing a tremendous change with the advent of these properties that include features like play areas, club houses or swimming pools that encourage community living. These projects are twice blessed as it is easier for the developer to provide all these facilities within an enclosed area and the dweller gets them spending just an extra penny.”
Mr. Srinivas also feels the city’s middle class profile does not come in the way of this progress. The builder, though was initially going for high-end buildings, is now targeting the middle class. “Vizag may not be anything like Bengaluru and Hyderabad, but certainly is a contender worth watching in this race.”
PANORAMIC THRILLS “Shriram Panorama Hills will not be just a concrete jungle but a whole new world,” says its Chief Marketing Officer, Mr. R. Balaji and adds “It is the first ever corporate player with pan-Indian presence to enter Vizag offering a futuristic integrated township in 80 acres of land.” This piece of land which is a perfect rectangle, with the much-needed water body in the East perfectly fits the vaastu bill. The township, with 3,281 units, is located on the Yendada and Madhurawada hill range and is estimated to cost Rs 1,800 cr and is aimed to create more than 81 lakh sft, including commercial space. Asserting that more and more players will enter the arena, Balaji says, “This magnificent landmark will redefine the way people live here. The hills will shape into Banjara and Jubilee Hills of Vizag.”
Why Vizag? We have a very strong reason to come to Vizag. Circular cities like Hyderabad and Bengaluru and linear cities like Chennai and Kochi have plenty of land and can grow in any direction they choose to. However Vizag is unique in its topography with the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Eastern Ghats on the other. Vast areas are covered by reserve forest land. In addition to this Vizag’s central business area is turning into a concrete jungle. We are fortunate to procure this land for our largest integrated venture in the entire South India. VUDA is playing a complementary role by creating the necessary infrastructure and a lot of opportunities in PPP mode. On uniqueness We are different from other developers as we are not here just to build and move out. But we are here to stay and maintain the property on our terms and conditions. This certainly will ensure a smooth and efficacious running of the community. It is the only township in the entire State, offering luxury and duplex apartments and villas. To ensure international standards we have even engaged world renowned architects, Jurong Town Corp Singapore, to design this project. It is the number one design firm in Asia, having designed over 1,000 townships across the globe.
Besides being quake - resistant, the towers are also wind-resistant and can withstand a velocity of 250 km per hour. We use only FE 500 VSP steel and solid blocks for the construction. First and foremost to mention is our three-tiered, fool-proof security system that includes CCTVs, video door phones and biometric access. Taking the children’s interest into consideration, we not only provide them with security but also other activities that are necessary for their all-round development. We are building an international school with European architecture besides arranging for karate, judo and taekwondo classes. An 88,000 sft-club house with swimming pools, high-end gymnasia, equipment like Precor and Life fitness, a spa, beauty and wellness centre and restaurant will be built. A unique aqua gym will be a special feature. To avoid turning balconies into clothes horses, we are tying up with launderers, providing them with a specific space to clean and dry clothes. This will also help us in our water conservation efforts. The landscaping of the project has received special attention from us. To ensure adequate ‘lung space’, 16 acres of land valued at approx. Rs. 80 cr has been kept untouched. As many as 1,500 trees along the compound wall and around 5,000 trees around the internal roads have already been planted. Nearly 20,000 medicinal plants and herbs are being planted. The special attraction will be the Dhanvantari Nakshatra Vana, the Medicinal Plants Park. An exclusive Sky Club with an infinity edge swimming pool on the 20th floor of one of the Blocks will also be one of its kind. Response People living in independent bungalows of 3,000 sft. are looking at our properties to be handed down to the gen next because of the quality of life and facilities we are offering.
The township consists of 7 towers with 2,471 apartments and 221 villas for which construction is taken up in a phased manner. First phase of 63 acres will be ready in another three years. red | july 2012 | 63
GREENER PASTURES “We have no illusions about luring the city dwellers to our mega housing venture at Tunglam nor is it our intention,” says Mr. Suresh Bavineni, Director, VPL Projects Pvt. Ltd. without mincing words. “Most of us have been living in Kurmannapalem for years as our industrial units are located here. Moreover, commuting to and from the city daily is not only time taking but also arduous. We have been managing with whatever accommodation is available around the Steel Plant. The quest for better living conditions compelled us to go for this venture,” says Suresh, recalling the genesis of the Green City.
“No one thought of having dwellings of this kind in this locality, as there was no infrastructure in place beyond Marripalem. Hence a few like minded people came together to build this township, targeting customers who are either employees of Steel Plant, Gangavaram Port and SEZ or owners of the industrial units around here. Of course, there are a few who prefer the suburban quietude to the hustle bustle of the city,” adds an articulate Suresh.

Uniqueness We are the only gated community under 100 per cent private participation. Our properties are not for the investment-seeking NRIs. We want people to live here. Fortunately, most of us, board directors, stay here. This naturally ensures personal involvement, which is necessary for the smooth run of any community. We have already started Green City International School which will soon move into its own sprawling complex with hostel facility. Our magnificent Balaji Temple celebrated its first annual Brahmotsav that attracted a record number of devotees. The imposing club house with all the amenities for entertainment is our asset. The attached restaurant and community hall take care of the social events and parties.
On maintenance We have a village on the fringe of the community, from where we get our domestic help. But the future will see service providers coming in a big way. Eco-friendly measures Registered with the Indian Green Building Council, Green City is fulfilling all the norms relating to water and energy conservation. Our eco-friendly measures include a sewage treatment plant and water softening plant. Hundreds of saplings planted here will soon turn the township into yet another BHPV Colony. Response Uniqueness of our project is that it is never affected by the ups and downs of the economy, recording steady growth. We insist on quality neighbourhood. Hence we choose our customers only on reference. Now we are looking at 2,000 units. Our principle is to build first and sell and not vice versa. Hurdles.. One hurdle we face is the railway track that cuts across the Auto Nagar, on which rakes run, supplying material to Steel Plant and Gangavaram port. This holds up road traffic for uncertain time. However, plans are afoot to build a flyover to ease the situation. We are heavily dependent on groundwater, as there is not water supply from the municipality. Salient features • 100 villas in the premium, deluxe and luxury categories. • 2 apartment complexes - Green City Heights and Green City Towers. • Green City Heights - an 8storeyed building targeting highend customers with the area of each flat varying from 1,397 to 3,534 sft. • Green City Towers - 80 apartments in 4 blocks with 1,361 sft flats, aiming at the middle class. • A vehicle for public transport and ambulance
UBIQUITOUS MVV “I have an appointment with Mr. Satyanarayana,” I politely told the man, who was fanning himself vigorously with a newspaper, sitting in the front office. His equally polite reply “Please tell me” foxed me. Impatience betraying my voice, I asked, “Well, will you please lead me to Mr. Satyanarayana?” He once again smiled, still not revealing his identity. That is when it dawned on me that I was talking to Satyanarayana himself and also realized that people in high places may not necessarily live in ivory towers. That is, M.V.V. Satyanarayana, Managing partner, MVV Builders and Chairman, CREDAI, Visakhapatnam.
While you are in Vizag, it is just impossible to pass through any important locality without noticing at least one MVV building. The man behind these imposing edifices states that building top-of-the line apartment complexes is his only dream which he pursues with utmost passion. He entered the arena in 1997 after his graduation and worked his way up to the top rank. Winner of Apartment Builders’ Association award 2004, he has as many as 15 projects in various stages of completion in Vizag and Hyderabad. Highway Homes, First Street, Happy Homes, Dream Homes, Ozone and Enclave are a few ventures that are nearing completion. The firm has also diversified into farm layout development, establishing Classic Farms and Estates. If MVV offers aesthetic and ergonomic designs for the upper classes, it comes up with cost-effective living places for the middle-income group. He strives to give the best value for the customer’s money.
Vizag plus.. Hyderabad may have better infrastructure but it is ultimately Vizag’s tranquility, scenic beauty and its peace-loving people that attract the investor who seeks safer havens. I beg to differ with many people who say that Vizag lacks space for further expansion. There is plenty, if only people agree to move to outskirts. On his own USP Primarily it is the dispute-free properties we offer that draw the customers to us. Till date, there is not a single complaint or an instant of customer tapping the door of court. The high quality material and construction, impressive elevations and most importantly, sticking to time schedule are our strong points. Equipped with our own RMC and brick plants, transport mechanism and man power, we are able to keep up the promises till date. His role as Chairman of CREDAI, Visakhapatnam chapter. CREDAI has taken upon itself the responsibility of arbitration of disputes arising out of buyer-builder deals. Our chapter too came out with a code of conduct as a measure of selfregulation. On his venture Suvarna Srinivasam is a joint venture with Suvarna Bhoomi Developers Pvt. Ltd. and is located at Tunglam. With emphasis on age old traditions and culture, it aims to bring together likeminded people to live in a large community. REDDY MADE HOUSES Ask Mr. K. Srikanth Reddy, Managing Director of Omcon Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd., why he has christened his project Reign Forest, he recalls, “The area brought to my mind the visages of rain forests. But a friend of mine changed the spelling, wishing me to rule the real estate market.” Srikanth stands out as a unique builder espousing interest not only in varied but also totally unrelated fields. Hailing from an acclaimed political family (he is a nephew of former president the late Mr. N.Sanjeeva Reddy), he will be contesting the 2014 elections. He served in various ministries including defence, communications and welfare and was instrumental in bringing out many revolutionary changes in their functioning.
The most memorable one of them being, getting the telecom facility into electronic and digital mode. A multilinguist, he reads with passion and is penning a book. Right now his focus is divided between building the unique gated community in Vizag and his own political career. We start with the obvious “Why this city?” Vizag is getting its due exposure, thanks to the improved connectivity and increasing industrial presence. The city will be another Gurgaon by 2020. It is one of the most buoyant among Tier II cities with tremendous scope for real estate. Hence it is attracting serious investors, besides home buyers. Gated community…. The concept is just old wine in new bottle. The intent may vary but living in communities has been a basic instinct the man can never resist because of the security it provides. Luxury homes are no longer the choice of elite. The quest for quality living compels even the middle class to opt for this highly evolved mode of living.

Uniqueness of his venture… Reign Forest is ideally located in Madhurawada, adjacent to NH - 5. The company aims at giving quality construction and amenities at an affordable cost, building 376 flats in 5 towers with 8 floors each. Our salient features include a mall, a huge twostoreyed parking space and multiplex with four screens with a provision for two more screens. Response A large number of NRIs from the city, besides those from Godavari districts, Srikakulam and Orissa are evincing interest in our venture and mind you, their intent is not just to invest but live here. On Vizag market The market here is price-sensitive. What sells at Rs. 3,000 in other places, hardly fetches Rs. 2,500 here. Hence, affordable housing is my mantra. Progress Nearly 30 per cent work is over. My project will be completed by next December. On Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) We can certainly do with some inflow of funds from outside, if the investment comes into the right sectors. They are keen on megalopolises and metros. I prefer a foreign agency working with Indian partners. Future plans Omcon wants to have a long term presence. We will announce another project very soon.
HEIR APPARENT More popularly known as Ramesh, Mr. Rama Raju is perhaps the youngest builder in the city. An MS degree holder in Computer Science from Southern Illinois University, USA, he worked as business analyst for a multinational company before returning home to join his father Mr. K Subba Raju, the city’s well-known builder. Though familiar with almost all angles of the trade, Ramesh insists that there is a long way to go before his views on this industry take a concrete shape and he cements his judgment on varied angles of this trade. However, he talks of the gap between the developed and the developing countries.
Hurdles.. The major hurdle we face is high material cost when prices are hiked at when the project is in progress. However, selling most of the apartments in the initial stage gives us the much-needed buffer. On diversification Our primary business is development of residential and commercial properties. We are looking at hospitality and retail industry in the near future and who knows, we may make foray into IT too.
KSR Group KSR is one of the leading apartment builders, with more than 25 years of track record of customer satisfaction On USA and India markets and constant innovation. It has India has a huge upside potential as developments spanning across the middle class population is growing residential, commercial, hospitality at a great pace. It is this group, which and retail properties. It completed needs affordable homes. This is, in more than one and half million sft. turn, putting that extra pressure on of constructed area by successfully housing market and pushing prices delivering more than 1,200 flats under higher. This trend will continue for various projects. With 8 lakh sft. under years before reaching a saturation construction at various stages of point. Poor infrastructure is our bane. completion, group is on an aggressive Hence people prefer to stay huddled mode of growth. It has plans to in the city which naturally takes the construct more than one million sft. land value to unreachable heights. Our bank interest rates are still high. Ongoing projects However, there is a steady growth KSR Pleasant valley is an extension in our market. to KSR Green Valley, with 117 premium apartments, hotel and mall. On the other hand, developed Comfort Homes is a joint venture with countries have quality housing. one are the days when home meant a paradise of sorts (remember the most popular adage gruhame kada swarga seema) surrounded by trees and flowering plants. It was a common practice to raise ornamental plants in the front yard while the backyard was reserved for kitchen garden. Trees and plants with medicinal values were imperatives in every household. As the modern day houses compete with one another to reach the sky, today people are left gasping for breath. However, every cloud has a silver lining. All is not lost, at least in verdant Vizag. or many, life’s major decisions depend on years of apposite planning and its apt execution in due course of time. But for a few, swift comes the choice and within no time they are found basking in the limelight. In a state, where studying engineering or medicine is considered the only option left for the younger generation, Sailesh Bolisetti emerged different. S
A short fast drive with his dad on a fine morning turned the steering wheel of his life into a new world. When people were drooling over Formula One racing and the brand new circuit at Noida, this young lad from Vizag embarked upon a journey with saloon cars (road cars modified for racing purposes). Having completed B.Tech., he finally chased his dream of slipping behind the wheel. Today this 23-year-old lad with a 3rd ranking in JK National Racing Championship, winner’s title in Volkswagen Polo cup India, 15th place in the Scirocco Cup and now the Lotus Evora GT4 and I1 super series, is a name to reckon with in the global scenario. He shares the tales of the thrills and spills- some hilarious, some gloomy, some enlightening, and some just simply incredible, with Ranita Ray and Kalyani Rajashekar over a cup of coffee.

O N T H E T R A C K Computer engineering and Motorcar Racing - Isn’t it a bizarre combination? I accompanied my dad who was on a road survey and the idea of racing just popped up in my mind! As luck would have it, he was really encouraging and immediately started enquiring about the sport. It was then that I got to know about the racetrack in Chennai and no soon I found myself racing to give it a try. My first victory motivated me further to give a serious thought to racing. I felt that I could do better, provided I get adequate time and exposure. Since Formula cars are run-of-the-mill, I chose touring cars. How supportive was your family? My father was equally crazy about racing and was literally behind me. Incidentally, my mother was out of the country when I won the first place in a junior level race. Later she just couldn’t say no except that she insisted on my completing studies. Do you have to undergo special training? They call it training but it’s more testing. There is no session for honing your skills. The racer is given a car, specific track and the time duration too. If you can beat the time, you are in. You also require a licence which says that you are fit enough to race and a self-declaration that you are solely responsible for the consequences! What were the major hurdles you faced in your journey? No challenges as such! I still remember the day when I appeared for my first test. My timing was pretty impressive. Personally, I felt as if I was driving a regular car. My mentors lauded it as my natural talent to handle the fast machine with such adeptness. However, one thing I lack is aggressiveness, which I have to work on. Who are your idols? How are you different from them? Michael Schumacher - for the way he won the F1 championship seven times. Next in line is Fernando Alonso. However, I differ from them both on their approach, which is aggressive. red | july 2012 | 78
If the experts are to be believed, this trait contributes majorly to the duo’s retaining the champions’ tag. They would rather damage the car than lose the race. May be I can nurture this quality in coming years. However, I feel I can be cool and still capture the first position. What is important - physical fitness, mental sharpness or determination? It is a combination of all and they are interlinked. Initially, I thought the physique did not matter and was happy with my baby fat. Later, I realised a well-toned body not only enhances looks, but also adds to your self-confidence and mental health. Endurance is the mantra here. For me it is like a gym on wheels as I lose nearly three kgs of weight in one hour. Of course, it does come back. Now I sweat out for more than six hours on regular basis on my fitness. Are you also aiming at Formula One? For the aam aadmi, everything is F1 racing. But touring car racing is totally a different ball game altogether. F1 is the fastest form of motor racing with open wheels and the cars are made just for the tailor-made F1 track. My stream deals with modified/tuned sports cars that are not only made for racing but also for the regular roads. Generally aspiring F1 racers begin with karts. However, I started my racing in a touring car. Isn’t the sport tough on your wallet? It costs me a bomb! Right now my dad is bearing all the expenditure. Last year, the picture was pretty good when I won the inaugural VW Polo Cup India - I was supported by Mr. Dhruv Kotak of Visakha Container Terminal (VCTPL). But this year, not a single sponsor turned up. I wish the government or a corporate supports me. What’s in the offing? This year I am focusing solely on the British GT. I am done with the first round with two second-place finishes. There are six more rounds to go. The next round is in Nurburgring, Germany, which will go on till September. I also want to continue in the touring car series and enter the DTM and Le Mans which are like the F1 in touring car racing. The buzz words are hard work and determination. I am lucky to have a wonderful team in GT4 (Lotus Sport UK) and a great team-mate (Phil Glew).
Your take on the recent track at Greater Noida and upcoming series The momentum is actually picking up now. When I started, it was pretty discouraging. With the entry of VW Polo Cup in India in 2010, there was a great change in the perception towards this sport. With the track in Greater Noida fully operational and more racing series like the Audi and Toyota on their way, India will soon be a motorsport hub. Is racing similar to rash driving? Yes & No. Racing is nothing but sensible rash driving. In racing, we follow a set procedure and whizz past, but with responsibility whereas in rash driving, one leaves safety measures to winds. Do you think youngsters can seriously take it as career option? If they are winning, then certainly yes. Racing is always about the first three players. The rest go into oblivion. Did Vizag’s traffic make you a better driver? Yes, it made me leave driving on regular roads. (Breaks in to laughter). Best track in Vizag I used to like the Vignan school road because it is all bumpy. Now the best road would be the Port Road towards the Airport. You can literally make your car fly! O F F T H E T R A C K When your friends were going for campus recruitments, you were racing in another part of the world. Haven’t you missed out on a regular life? Never! Racing is my job. I too have a boss. I get paid. I undergo pressure and strain and have to get better with each passing day. Belonging to a typical Telugu family, you might have your religious sentiments. Do you follow any such things before you start a race? None. We have been away from such things right from the childhood. I am just an onlooker at my grandmother’s pujas. Have you ever been disappointed with your own work? There are times when I get upset about my performance. But I cannot help it. Life is all about ups and downs.
The biggest compliment you’ve ever received! Too many to remember! I cannot mention just one. Every compliment is special in its own way. Do you watch films? Oh ya! 24/7 I can sit and watch all kinds of films. Ours is a family of film buffs and we watch the flops first because they are cleared away within no time. You find me either at the gym or some theatre. Friends and partying Partying is out of my list. If not a racer, what would you have been? I never thought of another career option. The decision was taken when I was in my +1. Somehow, I couldn’t imagine myself as an engineer. Glamour and fan following - how do you handle it? I usually do not go out much. Leisure time is strictly spent at home. But when people recognise me and start shooting questions, I cannot escape. I don’t have another option except allowing people to invade my privacy. Any interesting encounter My parents accompany me to each and every tour. India or abroad, they are with me. Do you think there is scope for encounters? (laughs) Are you single? Yes, of course. But not ready to mingle. I am occupied with racing now and cannot afford to have a girl in my life. A date with your dream girl - will it be a zooming or a quite one? Quite one. If she doesn’t like cars, she will turn me black and blue. Who is a greater charmer - an actor or a sports icon? An actor for sure! Cinema sells better than anything else in this world. Best friends in Vizag My schoolmates and college mates are all out of Vizag. I am the only one hanging around. There are a couple of gym buddies whom I meet every day.

It is better not to take rumours and controversies too seriously. Dusting them off is the mantra for all of us. A perfect way to survive in Bollywood”. Ok! That’s some gyaan.
HOLLYWOOD MASALA More than friends Once married and divorced Scarlet Johansson seems to be settling down in a new relationship! That too with He’s Just Not That Into You co-star Bradley Cooper. Both these stars were spotted coochy-cooing at a restaurant in California. People strongly feel that they are not ‘friends’ but something more than that! The two were so wrapped up in each other that they were laughing very hard unmindful of the surroundings. Scarlett especially was seen having a gala time, flipping her hair while chuckling at Cooper’s jokes. Well, we wouldn’t ask what were the jokes all about but do we get to see a big fat wedding in the near future?

In the web of love The Amazing Spider-Man might not have garnered much interest because of the star cast but it has definitely worked wonders for the lead pair! Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield enjoyed working for the film and they might soon announce their engagement date too. Emma is head-over-heels in love with the spider boy and just can’t wait to start a relationship. The crew also admits that the duo is constantly seen talking to each other and the chemistry is quite obvious. At the premier too, Emma and Andrew were holding hands and talking to the press. All is well and we only pray the two stay together.
TOLLYWOOD MASALA Who, Prabhas? Mr. Perfect Prabhas seems to have taken Nitya Menon quite seriously! During a press meet in the recent past, the Ala Modalaindi babe asked journos “Who is Prabhas?” This question created a sensation and people were zapped beyond words. Slowly, the news reached the ears of our hero and he was ready with a different sketch. During the 100-day function of Ishq, Prabhas spoke to the organisers and attended the event as the chief guest as a part of his revenge plan. When Nitya came on to the stage to receive the memento, Prabhas said, “Hi madam, I am Prabhas. Please don’t ever forget me”. The audience was seen cheering and clapping but the young lady was pissed off. Who started it all?
Anything for Karthi Long legged lass Anushka seems to be smitten by the Tamil industry! She is flooded with offers in Chennai and is unable to juggle dates. But hero Karthi achieved the impossible! For his latest Sakuni, he wanted Anushka to do a special appearance in the role of a funny police woman. Lo and behold! She accepted it immediately and has reportedly shot her part. This has raised the eyebrows of the film fraternity. When asked about all this, Anushka retorted with a smile, “I will do anything for Karthi because he is Surya’s brother.” Ok! Time for a new gossip!
Smart Dad Do you think King Nagarjuna has a secret ingredient to maintain his charm? Those who saw him at Ram Charan’s wedding reception couldn’t take their eyes off! After being done with his devotional film Sai Baba, Nag appeared in a completely new avatar and looked more like Hollywood’s Iron Man Tony Stark. This French beard and lean physique are for his new romantic story opposite Nayanatara. All the young heroes were awe-struck by Nag’s style. But Naga Chaitanya who is yet to prove his mettle as a class and mass hero was heard cribbing about how his father is dominating him with his appeal. Well Chaitu boy! Truth is always bitter.
‘Small’ not for Sam Riding high on the success of her recent flick Eega, petite beauty Samantha seems to be choosy when it comes to on the screen lip-locking. This seems to be evident in cases like Ye Maaya Chesave and Dookudu. She went ahead and kissed Naga Chaitanya and Mahesh Babu but got the scenes changed in Yeto Vellipoindi Manasu opposite Nani. If you are a big hero and if you belong to a legendary family, she is game. But if you are a budding hero or just another filmi guy, it is a big nono. Chota heroes, is the message clear?

TIDBITS
Tammu’s B-step Who doesn’t get attracted with Bollywood’s charm? Milk white beauty Tamanna is all set to jump into the bandwagon of Bollywood heroines. Sources say the actress has signed to play the female lead in Jitendra Sridevi’s Himmatwala remake and soon she might be romancing Ajay Devgn. Landing in the iconic role essayed by Sridevi is no easy task but Tamanna is a perfect choice say industry pundits. Looks like it is one more feather in Tamanna’s cap, who is riding on the crest of success in Tamil and Telugu flicks right now. Now this is right chance for her to bowl the Bollywood audience over.
Samantha replaced
Brahmi as Jaffa
Does Samantha look too old? If sources in Mani Ratnam’s camp are to be believed, the actor looks older than newcomer Gautham (yesteryear hero Karthik’s son), who is just 20. The director is said to have realized this only after wrapping up some key scenes on the duo and she is no longer associated with the film. The female protagonist is a teenage girl in Mani’s Kadal. After seeing Samantha’s Telugu films, the acedirector thought that she could justify the role of a village belle. After a thorough search for young faces, it was heard that Samantha has been replaced with 14-year-old Tulasi, the younger daughter of actress Radha. Only Mani should tell us the truth!
The trailer of ‘Jaffa’ , Brahmanandam’s latest movie is creating a rage in the Telugu tinsel town. The trailer keeps the audience in stitches. Coined by the comedian, the word ‘Jaffa’ has become so popular that it is now being used for his movie title. Comedian Vennela Kishore is directing the movie interspersing it with slapstick. The film is said to be a ‘serious’ story of two people (both played by Brahmi) who are mentally imbalanced. The film shows the other side of the actor. The big deal here is whether people will accept him in the serious role. Brahmi means comedy for them.
Gundamma Katha remake
Hansika is the new target
In the past, rumours were rife that Balakrishna and Nagarjuna would act in the remake of yesteryear’s classic ‘Gundamma Katha,’ that completed 50 years. The project, however, was shelved for want of ‘Gundamma’ who could match Suryakantam in the original. Now these second generation heroes could not make it because of their age factor as they are in 50s. Tollywood lovers now hope that the project could be possible with the third generation heroes ‘Young Tiger’ Jr. NTR and Naga Chaitanya. It may be noted that the original had late NTR and ANR in the lead. Says ANR, “The younger generation actors - Jr. NTR and Naga Chaitanya fit the bill.” With D. Ramanaidu registering the title, the rumours might take shape soon!
It is a known fact that heroines seldom go to shooting locations in their own cars. There is a reason behind this, which is violated by the buxom beauty Hansika. She is busy these days spreading a word everywhere that she is the proud owner of Rs 60 lakh BMW 5 series car now. But this very BMW landed her in trouble. Sources say that the bulky girl now entered the hit-list of Income Tax sleuths for a regular check-up. Earlier, actresses like Anushka and Bhumika were raided by the IT sleuths when they started using their own Mercedes and Audi in the tinsel town. As long as the accounts are correct and spending is proportional to earning, these heroines need not fear. We have to see how exactly Hansika will handle this!
Ishq in Hindi With Rowdy Rathod (remake of Telugu hit Vikramarkudu) ringing the cash registers at the box office, Bollywood once again eyes Telugu films. Buzz is that Nitin starrer Ishq is going to be remade in Hindi. It is a known fact that the film has given a fresh lease of life to the Jayam hero, who was badly in need of a hit . Arjun Kapoor of Ishaqzaade fame is reportedly keen on doing the remake of Ishq. If sources are to be believed his father and producer Boney Kapoor has already bagged the remake rights. So another blockbuster?

Sakuni’s threat to young heroes Pawan’s lekka Most of us do not know the idea of sensational Anthyakshari episode in Pawan’s recent hit Gabbar Singh, was Pawan’s brainchild. After getting a hint from the actor, director Harish Shankar worked on it and made it a wonderful scene in the film that turned out to be a highlight. If not for Pawan’s input, that legendary scene wouldn’t have been there. According to buzz, director Trivikram Srinivas narrated Julayi script to Power Star for few instant inputs that would work for the film. It seems the director inserted these inputs to great effect. Don’t get puzzled if you see a ‘Thank You’ card for Pawan in the credits of the film.
Two of his earlier films ‘Awara’ and ‘Na Peru Siva’ were big hits in Telugu. Though they were dubbed from Tamil, the films gave Karthi an identity in Telugu tinsel town. He too spared no effort to prove his mettle. The ‘Bru’ boy’s latest film that hit the theatres is ‘Sakuni’. Produced under Studio Green banner, the bilingual was released by Bellamkonda Suresh and K E Gynavel Raja in as many as 500 theatres across Andhra Pradesh. Karthi’s films have great openings and run for quite some time. Our heroes are worried about their films being destroyed by this Tamil hero and they literally begging the film council to stop playing dubbed flicks. They have a reason!
Secret of Vishwaroopam
Mega gesture
Histrionics is his forte. Whatever role he essays, he does it with much élan! Whether it is an ‘aspiring’ dancer in ‘Sagarasangamam’, or an ‘immatured’ husband in ‘Swathimuthyam’ or that dwarf in ‘Vichitra Sodarulu’, he bowled the audience over. After a long hiatus (after Dasavatharam perhaps) Kamal Hassan dons greasepaint once again for ‘Vishwaroopam.’ The actor says, “Vishwaroopam is something that has been in my mind for nearly 7 years. I hope it stays in my audiences’ mind for at least half that time.” He portrays the role of Vishwanath, Kathak exponent, who tied the knot to Nirupama, a Ph.D holder. The latter decides to desert her husband aspiring for more. Real life stories are always interesting!
Though looked strange, it was true. No gifts poured in at the big fat wedding of Ram Charan and Upasana held at Temple Tree Farms in Gandipet. As part of their philanthropic work, the couple beseeched all the invitees not to bring any gifts for them. Instead they asked them to donate for a cause and all the donations went for Upasana’s NGO ‘Save A Child’s Heart.’ Kudos to the young couple who appear to be following Mega Star’s footsteps. Remember Mega Star too is running a blood bank for the needy?

TURNING POINTS: A JOURNEY THROUGH CHALLENGES
It’s a sequel to the 'Wings of Fire’ by the former president of India Bharat Ratna, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Modestly priced at Rs. 199, the book has already earned the bestseller’s tag even before its release. The creative work narrates Kalam’s sojourn in Rashtrapati Bhavan, including the details of his meetings with Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other political leaders. The book starts on the amazing Kalam story picking up from where his first book ended. The author narrates the string of events, starting right from the time he got a call from the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee nominating him for the highest post in India. Incidentally the call was received soon after he delivered a lecture at Anna University in Chennai. The book reveals many aspects of his career and his life as president that are not made public till date. Besides offering a rare insight into his extraordinary personality, the book also reveals how he envisions India as an emerging superpower in the coming years. He advocates effort, perseverance and confidence as the essentials to reach the desired goal. It is indeed an enduring saga, a must read for every Indian. It is published by Harper Collins.
Rain games With the monsoon setting in across the country, we are confined to indoors. Here are a few lazy games for you. Lazy in terms of not having to strain your grey cells much. They are logic-less but exciting enough. With a cup of coffee, indulge yourself in sheer entertainment.
GRAVITY RUSH
ATELIER MERURU
Gravity Rush strips you off your gravitational binds, ushering you into an enticing open world to toy with gravity as much as your heart desires. Falling from the top of any building or safely speeding through the air is a cakewalk now. Harnessing the power of gravity is exhilarating, but dull combat keeps Gravity Rush from being the soaring success it could have been. Manipulating gravity is super fun and the beautiful settings make the game far beyond interesting. The only flipside is that you might be bogged down by tedious combat that gets monotonous after a period of time.
It buries its intriguing crafting system beneath annoying characters and a sickeningly sweet setting. The Arland trilogy of Japanese anime-flavored role-playing games ends here. This last addition to the family bogs down the formula with a number of extras that make the game more annoying than entertaining. Everything else has been hit hard by an obnoxious spoiled brat of the title character, a repetitive plot loaded with never-ending tedious dialogue and many creepy moments with the short-skirted kiddie characters you will definitely feel sick. If you are a kid at heart, pick it up!
BABEL RISING Perhaps you remember the biblical tale of the Tower of Babel. Discouraged by the flood that wiped out most of humankind and not convinced that they should believe God's promise to never again flood the planet, Noah's descendants began to build a tower that they hoped would stretch to the heavens. Babel Rising tells that story in a more interactive form. You assume the role of God and your job is to prevent the humans from constructing the famous tower. If you can forgive the redundancy, unique concepts and pleasant visuals make Babel Rising exciting. WORLD OF BATTLES : MORNING STAR
POKEMON CONQUEST The Pokemon franchise has thrived for decades as a collect-’em-all adventure, but the potential for more outlandish experiences has always been there. One part management simulation, one part combat extravaganza, this new approach to the expansive universe forces is quite unique. Red and blue are the only colours that you get to see. Although this dose of inventiveness breathes some fresh air into a sometimes stagnant world, the combat has been simplified to such an extreme that much of the fun is sapped away.
The game offers rewarding real-time strategy depth and tactics at a good price. This free-to-play fantasy realtime strategy game doesn't break any new ground when it comes to action, but it touches all the bases in providing ĂĄ smart combat. It's also an ideal training ground for genre rookies looking to get their hoofed feet wet and possesses a huge range of units across eight races. The most prominent objection comes from the cost of the "free" play, as a micropayment system all but requires you to lay down a fair amount of cash over time to keep up with other players online and gain access to the most powerful goodies. red | july 2012 | 87

SAKUNI Though Sakuni has an excellent storyline with political backdrop, director Shankar Dayal fails to impress audiences with his debut flick. The film is all about how a middle-class young man saves his ancestral home from the hands of cruel politicians. We have seen many such stories but this one is neatly linked to the love story of the protagonists. Karthi is the soul of Sakuni and his performance is the best till date. Praneetha as the lady love of Karthi is cute enough but she has not much scope to perform. Prakash Raj, Kota, Chandra Mohan and others do justice to their characters. G.V. Prakash’s music is neither awesome nor boring. The song locales are a treat to the eye. Die-hard Karthi fans enjoy the flick but for the others, it is a yawn!
Eega Rajamouli’s magnum opus Eega has finally seen light almost after two years of struggle. The trailers and songs have generated enough curiosity and raised the expectations on the director and his team. Nobody, not even the tiny fly, lets you down! There’s comedy, love, sentiment, revenge drama and action. Though Sudeep is the baddie in Eega, he is the one who creates an impression. Nani and Samantha are just perfect as the lead pair and the supporting roles essayed by Hamsa Nandini, Aditya Menon, Thagubothu Ramesh and others are equally good. The soul of the film is M.M. Keeravani’s music and the songs too are beautifully shot. Extraordinary visual effects are a treat to the eyes. Director Rajamouli has again proved that he doesn’t need a hero to make a blockbuster. With such films making an entry into Tollywood, we can stop drooling over Superman, Spiderman and Batman. A must watch flick!

GANGS OF WASSEYPUR Smriti Irani welcomes you to her home in a typical ‘Saas bhi kabhi bahu thi’ style, and suddenly there’s a spray of bullets blasting the TV set. That’s how GOW starts and from frame one you get absorbed in the story about coal-mafia loaded with inter-religion complexities and various shades of human relationships. Director Anurag Kashyap keeps the plot thick and tensed throughout, occasionally breaking it with dark humour and cheesy dialogues. Soundtrack is top-notch and very different and the song ‘Teri Keh ke Lunga’ topping the chartbusters is enough testimony. Overall, a classic which leaves you craving for more and thou shall receive it as GOW part II. Till then, indulge in the dark worlds of Bihar and coal-mines.
TERI MERI KAHANI If you are in mood for a light-hearted romantic comedy, Kunal Kohli has it for you. Teri Meri Kahani is built on the idea of soul-mates. Three love stories from different generations are put together, with a common ending. The film goes from Mumbai of 1960 to London of 2012, then onto Lahore before the partition, 1910. All three stories pair Shahid opposite Priyanka and the duo do their bit perfectly in three different characters and moods. “Mukhtasar” is already a huge hit and the other tracks do not lag far behind, merging effortlessly with the stories. At no point do you feel that the music is forced and animated! On the whole, this movie is simple and charming. It is a perfect ‘Date-movie’ and does not get melodramatic. Watch it and stay in love forever!

The Amazing Spiderman The story, if not for the brilliant special effects and awesome performances, is a little dead. The film comes closer to the comics by picking up the mechanical web shooters and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) as Parker’s first true love. But then again, as Spiderman, he takes too long to don the Spidey suit and that is quite bothering. What you notice is that he is mostly seen settling scores without the Spidey mask. His web too doesn’t come naturally to him unlike the others Spiderman series. Of course, when he does dizzily bungee jump across the Manhattan skyline, he still manages to shiver the audience. Phew!

is cute baby smile drives girls crazy, his acting skills enthrall fans of all ages and his tall perfect frame, with the classy Greek-God looks, earns him universal adulation. He is India’s 5th most desirable man. Whether it is for his acting skills, his impressive physique or his punch lines Maheeeshhh is a prized possession of the Telugu film industry. He is the Prince in every sense of the word. Owing to his popularity among audience both in south as well as north, he is now being roped in as brand ambassador for international firms too! Though married, he still remains a heartthrob of millions of girls. Suave, flamboyant and yet extremely dignified, Mahesh Babu will soon be flaunting his fabulous abs in his upcoming film. Get ready for the madness!
D N CKING O L B HESH A How is your song with 600 models in Sukumar’s next film shaping up? You got the number wrong; it is 2000 models that I am dancing with. Initially I was very shy when I was surrounded by so many hotties. It has all the makings to be a song of the decade.
Rated number 5 in the list of India’s most desirable men in 2011 - Does that make you proud? I seriously don’t understand what is so desirable about me! Aren’t there many more such men? Why me? Though an actor, I am a simple person like any other family man. Of course, I take it as an honour that I could catapult Tollywood into the national league. But isn’t Namrata worried about such titles? (laughs) May be it worries her if I don’t get them. I must dedicate this title to her.
For your next flick, you have hired Brad Pitt’s trainer Greg. Will you go topless? I will definitely not look like Shah Rukh in Om Shanti Om. All my earlier trials at six packs proved futile. I ended up looking dead. This time I want to sport a chiselled physique and hence have gone for Greg. Just pray that I don’t drop it midway because I am known for such things. I will appear shirtless for the first time on screen if alleez well!
Bagging the maximum number of endorsements than any other actor down South - Why are you ‘mostwanted’? You must tell me! Perhaps, they are a testimony to my popularity. And trust me such creative commercials are exciting. They break monotony. I thoroughly enjoy doing them.
Your wardrobe seems to have undergone a makeover postAthadu. Why? We have to change with the changing times. Do I sound like a saint? But as an actor, I should not confine myself to a monotonous way of dressing, acting or body language. It would be my last film if I tend to repeat any of them. Athadu gave a big boost to my career. Since then, Namrata has been taking personal care about my costumes. With every new film, the game gets more exciting!
You had a great comeback after three years. Did that long break help you grow, personally and professionally? Those three years were highly critical for me. I was dying for a break and was keen on improving myself. I lost my parents-in-law and my grandmother to whom I was very much attached. At the same time I wanted to be with Namrata who was completely shattered. Seeing my son grow up was rewarding. Nothing meant more than him. I had loads of quality time to spend with my family.
A multi-starrer in the making, brand endorsements and plenty of upcoming flicks! Do you have time for family? Now there is no time! Given a chance, I would love to stay back at home. Endorsements especially require me to travel round the world. That is quite hectic. But being busy too is important. So, no regrets!
Fans were upset that someone else dubbed your voice in the Hindi Thums Up commercial. Your voice would have been great! Absolutely! But somehow I couldn’t manage to dub it. Many thought I could not speak Hindi but a busy schedule was the culprit.

You were very shy and stayed away from limelight when Pokiri happened. But now you are seen interacting with media and staying active in social networking sites. Why is this sudden change? When Pokiri was declared a blockbuster I was stunned at the attention I got. I was suddenly a super hero and it changed my life. But I am definitely not shy or recluse. It is just that I need little extra space. Now, there is a need for me to be active on the internet and interact with people. As I said, one should keep changing with the world. Nine films as a child actor and 17 films as the main lead - How was the journey as an actor? Oh fabulous! I can’t ask for more. As a child actor I did not have that pressure to deliver a hit. In fact, by the time I actually realised that acting was important, I had done five or six films and I was a celebrity. My initial career graph as the main lead was not all that rosy. A star kid raises expectations and it is difficult to meet them. Rajakumaradu was a hit but the next ones failed at the box office. Then flicks like Okkadu, Arjun and Pokiri brought me back into the main league. The journey is always great except for a few disasters. Any missed chances and regrets? I regret losing Shankar’s Snehitudu (remake of 3 Idiots). I am against going for remakes. But I broke the rule just for the sake of Shankar. Unfortunately, it did not happen because of the dates clash with Dookudu. Nijam, Naani, Takkari Donga, Sainikudu and Atidhi didn’t reach the expectations of the audience. What went wrong? When it was I who accepted the script and shot for the film I should not pass the buck on to others. I should have been careful while choosing the script. Poor judgment and lack of knowledge result in duds. But they are part of the package. Does your dad come up with feedback and suggestions? Oh yes! He is more like Paul, the Octopus. He can actually predict the result of the movie. That is the reason why I ensure that he watches the premier before the release. red | july 2012 | 92
Do flops distress you? Tell me which actor doesn’t get upset! I get depressed and switch off from the rest of the world. Nevertheless, I have become better at handling failures which is again a part of my reformation. Two films each with Trivikram and Puri. Are they your personal favourites? Tricky question! The others might get offended. But I like both of them. As directors, they know what they should get from me. Even if they deliver a flop, I don’t blame them. A film’s success is not in one person’s hands. We heard that Trivikram is your only friend in and outside the industry. Why so? (Chuckles) You are surely putting me into trouble! Where did you get this from? Well I studied in Chennai and later on moved to Hyderabad. So all my friends are settled there and I am a loner here. Anyway, I am not a party animal and prefer to stay at home if I am not shooting. The chances of staying in touch or meeting new people are very less. But it is true that Trivikram is my best buddy in the industry. Your role in Khaleja as the loud and funny taxi driver was an instant hit. Can we expect more such roles in the future? That was one hell of a role that I love to the core. I never expected Trivikram to sketch such a character for me. I knew that Raju’s role would be loved by all especially when my fans were dying to see me in a new avatar. I prefer comedy to action or drama. Directors, are you listening? Tell us about Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu. Another special film and the first multi-starrer in my career too! The shoot is taking place at great speed and the cast is doing its best to churn out a good entertainer. As of now, fingers crossed!
WHAT HE SAYS ABOUT Krishna, Father - At home, he was never Superstar Krishna. He was just like any other father taking care of his children. His down-to-earth attitude and helping nature are what I love. Dad is like encyclopedia of acting and we are truly blessed to be his children. Namrata, Wife - Life changed after Namrata stepped in. She’s just unbelievable. The way she handles the home front and assists me equally is fantastic. When we were serious about our relationship, I said I didn’t want a working wife and that’s it! She quit everything for me. Gautam, Son - The best part of my life is Gautam. Every man should experience fatherhood and I am thoroughly enjoying it now. Life is complete with him and he is very proud of me. I am his super-man, spider-man, he-man and super hero. I love waking him up every morning and see him smile.
FAVOURITES Film - Okkadu Dialogue - Evadu kodithe dimma tirigi mind block avthundo! Actors - Superstar Krishna, Rajinikanth Director - Mani Ratnam, Trivikram Song - Nee dookudu Music director - Mani Sharma Choreographer - Raju Sundaram Holiday spot - Queenstown, New Zealand Food - Homemade
Tell us your love story. We met during the shoot of Vamsi. Fell in love. Got married after two years. That’s it! Have you ever forgotten your wedding day or your wife’s birthday? Many times! But she is very good at forgiving me. Isn’t Namrata jealous of your female following? Not at all! She says that they are all like my sisters. How do you manage to stay rumour-free? Aren’t rumours supposed to be bad? So I should stay away right! Have you ever been linked with a co-star? Namrata was the only co-star who was ever linked with me. The rest is history. If not an actor, what would you have been? I never thought beyond acting. Do you cook? No. But I am pretty good at eating. Are you a religious person? Well, yes only if there’s a release round the corner. One film of your father you would want to remake? Alluri Seetha Rama Raju.

If you had the chance to go back in time, where would you go? Nowhere. I enjoy the present.

t is here! Though a little late, it arrives in full style! Premium car brand Audi has started testing new waters with a sporty, lavish, unique and versatile vehicle. Believe it or not, but within a week of its launch, the super luxurious Audi Q3 has already garnered over 500 bookings. The Q3 is branded as a lifestyle automobile rather than being termed as a full-grown off-roader. Though called as a baby SUV, the Audi Q3 boasts of all the features the larger vehicles have but the seven-speed S tronic empowered engine makes all the difference. Aparna Gollapudi takes the first ‘drive’ of this wonder wagon. R
CROSS-
OVER Looks This compact crossover’s main competitor is believed to be the BMW X1. However, the former scores high in terms of styling. The Audi Q3 isn’t a stunner as at the first glance but stands out as completely practical. It looks neat and refined. The styling is not gaudy but subtle and there is a nicely proportioned coupe-like profile making it look like a proper little off-roader. It has bright roof rails and fog lights. Samoa Orange, Amalfi White, Brilliant Black, Ice Silver and Monsoon Grey are colour options to choose from.
excellent. The seats are placed high up giving way to clear visibility. Leg space is decent and the whole cabin feels spacious. There’s a wide range of seat and steering wheel adjustments. The boot can be called adequate, although the floor has been raised to make room underneath for the stereo sub-woofer. This might be a spoilsport as most people want good boot space. Audi could have done better here. However, a drive on it will let you forgive and forget the silly boot. The logical nature of the MMI system, which displays the infotainment options on a centrally mounted 6.5-inch screen makes scrolling between menus simple.
Interiors Q3 flaunts Audi’s usual refinement on its interiors too. A large wraparound dashboard is designed to encapsulate the driver and frontseat passenger – a feature normally found on the brand's larger cars. An optional color display on the instrument panel is a first in the Q series. Unlike its ‘style’-influenced rivals, the all-round visibility is quite red | july 2012 | 100
S The Q3 also has an optional efficiency mode which helps save fuel by letting you free-wheel off the throttle. There is also the park assist button that lets the car size up the parallel parking space anywhere and actually steers itself into it while you control the speed. These kinds of innovations make the car even more appealing. The Audi Q3 maybe small but it is no less intimidating! R

E Avant-garde Audi has been generous with its basic equipment levels too! There are no ugly plastic gaps and empty moulds but the basic equipment is in place. The Bluetooth, electric handbrake, dual-zone climate control, audio system, rain sensors and rear parking sensors sit perfectly in their designated areas. There is a navigation radio system for any assistance on the directions with great voice control.
Versions and performance The wagon is available in two engines - a 2.0-litre TFSI petrol Quattro unit of 168bhp and a 2.0-litre TDI diesel Quattro unit of 175bhp, also found in the Q5. The diesel version is ready to hit the market whereas the petrol version will make its entry later on. The brilliant seven-speed dual clutch S tronic transmission engine helps in taking smooth turns and rev pretty quickly. The engine sounds great though you may hear the drone sometimes. The gentle nature of its suspension makes it a happy ride in town, but as the speed increases things might be disturbed. There’s plenty of grip and the cornering body lean is pretty well controlled. The steering wheel is average and needs a little fine tuning.
F
Practicality The compact packaging certainly makes the Q3 a driver’s joy. Even in a tighter parking space, the driver can easily push it into a slot. Nevertheless, when it comes to load lugging, its capacity isn’t much better than that of a small family hatchback. The maker has also taken the necessary safety measures by including engine and transmission guards, rear side airbags, wheel bolts and even a tool-kit jack.
• Torque - 215 lb-ft (gasoline), 295 (diesel) (CG estimates) • Transmission - 6-speed automated manual • Wheelbase - 102.5 inches • Length - 172.4 inches • Width - 72.2 inches (CG estimate) • Height - 65.0 inches (CG estimate) • Base curb weight - 3,675 lb (CG estimate) • 7-speed automated-manual transmission • DSG ( Direct-Shift Gearbox ) • Dual Clutch Transmission • Price (approximately) - Rs. 30 lakh (Rs. 3 million) Audi Q3 will be launched in three variants • A 147 kW (197 hp) 2.0 FSI turbo engine • A 171 kW (229 hp) 3.0 turbo-diesel V6 • A 210 kW (282 hp) 3.6 FSI V6

Samsung is back with a sequel - the Galaxy S III. The front houses the much slimmer home button and is flanked by a pair of buttons that light up and disappear. The 8-megapixel camera is quite similar to its predecessors, supporting dual still and video capture. It allows face tagging for existing contacts and boasts of improved face identification and tracking. What makes the Galaxy S III so unique is its new 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos processor, aided by a new GPU that is apparently 65 percent faster than in Galaxy S II. The phone has a detachable 2,100 mAh battery, next to which is the space for a micro-SIM and a micro-SD slot, storage expandable up to 16GB, 32GB or 64GB. The portico flaunts a BMW, a Mercedes Benz and a Rolls-Royce, the garden has a huge clock with his name engraved on it, an in-house swimming pool and tennis court; the list is endless. The interior is just jawdropping with splash of luxury in every nook and corner. Each artifact and piece of furniture exhibit the owners’ personal touch and opulence. In such a mansion, the red team was greeted warmly and it enjoyed the privilege of spending a few moments with him. Here onwards begins our historical interaction with Dr. Gunapati Venkata Krishna Reddy, the man behind the conglomerate GVK Group. He is the sole architect behind this diversified business house; the source of inspiration and the pole star too. From infrastructure, construction, power, roads, premium hotels and sports to emergency services - the company has its presence in almost every sector. He is the first generation industrialist who started his career with government projects like building dams, power houses, irrigation canals, bridges etc. Padma Bhushan GVK, has obviously been honoured with many an award and accolade. Just a few to mention are “Best First Generation Entrepreneur of the Year” 2010 under the India Business Leaders Awards instituted by CNBC TV-18, “Construction World - Man of the Year 2011” by Construction World, “Entrepreneur of the Year Award” in 2009 from Economic Times. In 2010, Forbes has estimated his net worth as US $ 1.0 billion placing him among India’s Top 50 richest persons. The man himself talks of his journey. L
You have proved that one could master many trades. How did you achieve that? I started with our family business, i.e., construction. In 1959, with a split in the family, I inherited my father’s share. This was the starting point to my journey as a businessman. The first diversion took place in late 70’s with building the luxurious five star hotel Taj Banjara in Hyderabad and the particle board plant in the name of GVK America Inc. in North Carolina, USA. With this plant I chose to explore the US and lived there for over a decade. It was only in 90’s when India was liberalizing and on the behest of the then Chief Minister, Dr. M. Chenna Reddy, I returned to test waters here. With the financial support from the World Bank, I set up a power plant. I grabbed every single opportunity that came knocking at my door and there was no looking back. With the GVK Jaipur-Kishangarh Expressway Ltd., I ventured into road sector. Next was the most prestigious project of Mumbai Chatrapati Shivaji Airport. How do you manage multi-tasking? When it’s about handling a single business, one can bestow undivided attention. But as it grows in multiple directions, tackling it singlehandedly is not feasible. This is the juncture, where one needs to involve others to share responsibilities. I am blessed to have a number of such trustworthy people. It is because of them GVK is standing and growing strong. You have worked in India and the US, what is the difference in these two worlds? The US ventures happened smoothly because it was already a liberalized economy. Whereas in India everything used to be a long permission seeking process, often ending up in disappointment. In the US there were no such restrictions. Often it was only an environmental clearance, which needed to be obtained. Since the western nations are already at their peak of development, there are practically no areas to improve upon. Back in India which is in a developing stage there is a lot more to explore. Things turned positive after liberalization. With government policies being favourable, we are sure to transform India from a developing to a developed nation.

It is said the most challenging task you have taken up is the Chatrapati Shivaji Terminal project. Please comment. The Mumbai project is an atypical one, not to be found anywhere in the world. It has 2,000 acres of land, out of which 1,000 acres is already occupied. We had to build the entire terminal in rest of 1,000 acres, which in itself is a challenge. If you compare; the national capital has 5,000 acres, Hyderabad has 5,500 acres and Singapore 15,000 acres of land for their airports. Today nearly 30 million passengers per annum pass through this airport. We have to design an integrated passenger terminal at Sahara to cater to a passenger traffic

of 40 million per annum and we are confident to get it ready by August 2013.
urban as well as far flung rural areas and also creates employment for over 17,000 people.
Philanthropy and GVK are synonymous. Throw some light.
Tell us about your interest in sports I am a sports enthusiast, with special inclination towards Tennis. We have set up a tennis academy in Hyderabad to encourage and groom the budding talents. We have been sponsoring events such as the Afro-Asian Games held in Hyderabad in 2001 and the GVK AITA Veterans Tennis Championships since 1999. Presently we are sponsoring the under 19 tennis talent Pranjala, who appears to be quite promising.
With an aim to help the poor and needy we have established the GVK Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI). It is the only organized professional emergency service provider in the country operating the 108 Emergency Response Service in 11 states. It covers almost 40% of India’s population, handles 1, 25,000 calls and attends to 12,000 emergency cases with 250-300 lives saved every day. GVK’s life is worth emulating and can be inspiration to many who are on the threshold of their career. His articulate answers are just a glimpse of this man of vision, who has a lot more in store to give to this world. Business tycoon Dr. Reddy, also has an equally fascinating personal life, which is not known to many.
What are your future projects? The world is available for all the future projects (laughs). There are a few huge ones in pipeline. One among them is in Australia, which deals with three coal mines. For this project, we will lay 500 km. of our own railway line and will build our own port. This will be one of the largest ventures not only for India but for Australia as well. The successful Mumbai International Airport Limited and Bengaluru International Airport ventures have earned our group international recognition and we will be developing two new Greenfield airports in North Bali and Yogyakarta in Indonesia.
On his early life….. Born on 22 March, 1937, I am one among the six children of my parents. I hail from an agricultural family from Kothur in Nellore district. As a child I was very naughty and did everything to justify my name Krishna. Often my parents used to get complaints from my teachers. Books and I were poles apart. All their efforts to inculcate discipline in me were futile. This continued till I turned 12, until the day I saw the top scorer of my class being honoured by my teacher. That was the turning point. I aspired to be like him and I was advised it was only hard work and dedication that could reach me to my goal. I loved to take challenges, be it climbing trees or jumping from heights. I took it as a challenge and one year later I found myself in the top position. Since then my parents never had to worry about my studies or career. I got into business as soon as I obtained my degree from Osmania University. Later I pursued Owner/President Management (OPM) Program from Harvard Business School, USA.
What is the secret behind your ever green charm? It’s my daily date with tennis (beams). This sport has been a part of my life for years. So much so, that I have a tennis court for the past 30 years on my premises. I play with friends every morning from 6.00 am to 8.00 am. It pumps in an amazing amount of energy and cheers me up instantly. Even after a tiring day, I unwind with a refreshing session of tennis. A farmer’s son to a Forbes Billionaire; has the professional gain taken a toll on your disposition. There is absolutely no regret. I worship work and enjoy working. Discipline is the panacea. As I have mastered it, I can do justice to my personal life too. Haven’t you heard - a busy man finds time for everything? What are ingredients that make the GVK? Vision, discipline, hard work, perseverance and commitment. One has to have a vision, and cultivate self-discipline. Next come hard work and perseverance to pursue the vision. My word is my commitment; it is much above any legally binding document.
One day in your life worth celebrating. Which one is that? (Bursts into laughter) Every day is a celebration.

Perhaps I am too young even to pay a compliment to a magnificent and charismatic Mr. GVK. Among a number of celebrities. I had the good fortune to meet till now, here is a person whom I shall revere eternally. What is most striking about him is his humility despite being blessed with amazing intellect and enormous success. A highly inspiring individual, GVK is completely down to earth, besides being polite and compassionate. One need not look too far to find out the reason for his remarkable success. His punctuality, of which we had a taste, appears to be one among many of the virtues that sit pretty on him. Even age has failed to take the sheen out of this business magnate, whose footprints many a budding entrepreneur likes to follow. My rendezvous with him, though short, reminded me of the often heard quotation “Excellence is not a destination; it is a continuous journey that never ends.”

or God’s sake, it is our first anniversary issue and of all the things, washrooms?” was the general commotion that entailed when my editor and I, in unison, proposed the topic. Despite all the brouhaha from various quarters, we not only stuck to our guns but also came up with a very convincing explanation. Well the logic is - don’t we start with cleansing ourselves, when we embark on any auspicious beginning? And where do we do it? Moreover, there is a sea change in the perception of the people when it comes to this very imperative part of the house. The washroom is no more relegated to some dark and remote corner of the house. It has evolved into a beautiful room with all the amenities, which not only give ‘aah’ feeling, but also help users unwind themselves after a tiring day. It’s time you design or redesign your restroom to make it look no less luxurious than the one in the star hotel you visited last. Value Line pitches in, offering all bathroom fittings in a very comprehensive manner. No need to import them to add that touch of panache to your washroom as you get them right here at your doorstep. If you are thinking tubs are there just to extend a bathing experience, then you are mistaken. In the modern plush tubs you can submerge in a swanky soak. These tubs feature hydrotherapy whirlpools with air blowing jets creating a home spa experience. They are also equipped with multiple shower heads, adjustable body sprays and provide steam type showers. These products are at once luxurious and functional. Most of them are highly useful in decreasing stress and checking allergies, thus making your tub a therapeutic retreat. Even faucets these days are mounted on the ceiling providing a most unusual way of filling the bathtub. Although majority of such luxury bathtubs require a lavish space, there are certain brands which can fit in lesser area and are economical too. Customized designs are cheaper. The materials vary from ceramic, acryl, stainless steel to even wooden ones. Built-in stone or resin-ware tubs are relatively cheaper.

This creation by Fantini comes in two versions - wall mounted with 378 front body jets and floor fixer with as many as 504 body jets. The body jets can be operational in four divisions apart from complete usage.
HR Mare Shower will be a lavish ritual with this Mare shower station. Equipped with thermostatic built-in shower mixer, it features three outlets - a circular 360mm diameter overhead shower in sync with six round body jets exposed on walls which can rotate 180 degrees and a hand spray.
OPULENT CUBICLES
We are talking about that cozy independent space in your washroom; the shower cubicle. Popular for its superb stylish look, flaunting multi-functionality - shower, sumptuous steam bath, full dimensional massage etc., it shapes as the sexiest curve of your washroom. Adding to its style are those comfort and entertainment features like radio, phone, remote control operated CD player and so on. As it is generally installed in one corner, it has the added advantage of not eating space. The makers of such cubicles these days are offering varied options from elegant glass ones with colorful lighting facilities to special treatment plastic board wood. Incidentally, chromatherapy is in vogue. Apart from these built-in shower cubicles, a shower station with overhead shower, powerful body jets and hand showers is quite popular. But this, however, needs a pressure pump and at least a 3/3 sft. space. Now you can bathe in shower of multi-hued lights!

“
India is a land of vibrant colours. Almost every surface can be a potential canvas for those who are blessed with a little creativity. One such art form is Graffiti”this is the message Edwin Emanuel of Hyderabad wants to spread through his art. He may be a greenhorn in the field of graffiti painting, but one look at his creative work makes you go woooooowww! An animator, photographer, designer and also a graffiti artist, Edwin hails from a creative family and was attracted to this art in the very first brush he had with it in Bangalore. “I was bowled over by this art which is unconventional. It is without all those constraints that go with the traditional arts,” narrates Edwin. A
Writing on the wall Graffiti is an art which involves writing or drawing, generally spray painted on walls or other surfaces. It ranges from simple written words or scribbling to elaborate paintings. The first examples of such work can be dated back to the times of ancient Greece and Roman empires. Varied shades Art lovers worship Leonardo Da Vinci, Picasso or India’s own M. F. Hussain. Their art pieces are prized possessions and connoisseurs don’t mind spending fortunes to own them. Had one of these great artists decided to paint a part of your house or a wall in your neighbourhood, what would you have called it - art or vandalism? The answer to this varies from person to person. But being an artist, I would say that those paintings are nothing but various forms of graffiti. I don’t see any difference. Graffiti is as exquisite as any other art form but its sanctity is at stake. Styles There is a plethora of styles that one can adopt. • Tags - is the simplest; it is basically the graffiti writer’s signature • Throw-up - a little complicated but can be finished quickly; usually done with two or three colours. • Stencil base - In this method after the baseline artwork is done, fine
paint brushes are used to give the finishing touches. • Paint roller - This is used for crisp, clear lines and giant-scale works and wild style. • Mixed media - Can be achieved by pasting posters along with paint, stencil and aerosol to create huge murals. • Wild style - Way too complicated and equally stylised; an untrained eye can’t decipher it easily. It consists of arrows, spikes, curves and other elements that are often 3D. • Heaven - the style often done on the last floors of sky scrapers. As these spots are hazardous and tough to reach, heaven-graffiti artists are treated like Gods! Tools and gears Aerosol spray paint, nozzles, markers, stencils and gas or paint mask are the only paraphernalia for a graffiti artist. Mastering it Don’t straight away hit walls or streets. Master the art by practising on a sheet of paper. Start off with writing your name in different styles. It is six years, but I still practise on papers. In India, there are no institutes that impart training on Graffiti. An established artist can be your mentor. Follow the YouTube guides on this art.
This new-age tutor is a saviour to budding artists. Applications Graffiti is an excellent tool to express one’s inner-self. It also allows you to convey social and political messages. The ad world can also cash in on it for vivid illustrations. With a smarter approach, it can be an integral part of interior designing too. Legalities Artists generally use public walls, buildings, buses and other surfaces as their canvases without the property owners’ consent. Hence it is considered defacement and vandalism, and is a punishable crime. Valid permission and responsible usage can remove the stigma attached to Graffiti. Arty desires I only paint for friends or for paid projects. I aspire to get recognition for my work and I wish our government emulates cities like Mumbai and Bangalore and gives us space. Then we can give full vent to our latent talent. Message I hold regular workshops on graffiti, especially for the gen-next. I want to pass the message that it is an excellent form of art and not vandalism. A For further guidance, contact Edwin Emanuel: +91 99855 52007

lothes alone don’t make the woman. Even the trinkets she wears are telltales of her persona, taste and emotions. Little wonder jewellery is called her soul mate. To watch the elegant ‘she’, there is no better way than see her flaunting gem of the sea- pearls. The feather like softness, the subtle glow perhaps makes the pearl sometime more cherished than the glittering diamond. It is the world’s only organic gem and is composed of calcium carbonate. It doesn’t just stop at complementing the beauty. It also has astrological usability. It has a pacifying impact on human minds. More importantly, the history stands testimony to the fact that it has been always the royal choice. Can you imagine Queen Victoria of Britain or our own Maharani Gayatri Devi flaunting a neck sans a string of pearls? With country’s pearl capital Hyderabad being embedded in our anniversary issue, featuring these lovely beads appears apt. So for that elegant you, calm mind or even for a regal feel, get pearl pally. Ranita Ray displays an array of designs. Try them in assorted combination of precious metals like silver, gold, platinum or gemstones like diamonds, rubies, emeralds etc. or let it be just the pearls. Choose your own statement. D

SCALING FACTORS Natural pearls are scarce and thus are more expensive than cultured ones. While the naturals are sold by carat weight, the cultured ones are sold by their size in millimetres. The genuinity and quality can be judged from four factors: colour, lustre, nacre thickness, shape. While the original pearls are not round from all the sides, the smoother surface makes them costlier. Although the white pearls are traditionally being the most popular, even the pink and black ones are quite rare and considered to be of good quality. A high quality white one has a lovely sky blue tinge while exposed to ultraviolet light, whereas a lower quality has a greenish gleam. Black ones with a green sheen and baroque (irregular shaped) pearls that reflect a rainbow of colours are also amongst the more valuable varieties.
PEARL PAMPERING There is a Chinese saying “Men grow old, pearls grow yellow.” That means the change is irreversible. One of the major components of pearl is aragonites, an unstable mineral with a natural tendency to turn yellow and lose its beautiful lustre. Even cultured pearls with thicker coatings are also equally fragile. However, a few maintenance tips can play the trick and delay the ageing process. • Let the gem adorn you last. Wear them only after you are done with makeup, perfume, creams etc. • Fresh air keeps the pearls fresh. Avoid sealing them in airtight bag for long time • Harsh detergents or solutions containing ammonia are big no no. To remove the dirt, use a mild soap and water solution. However, rinse off the water and ensure it’s dry completely. • Soon after the use, wipe the pearls with a soft, lint-free cloth to keep them sweat-free. The cloth can be dampened with water or it can be dry. If damp, allow the pearls to air dry.
• While storing them, keep in a special slot as they get scratched if rubbed against gemstones and metals. Separate soft pouches are best.
Taylor once misplaced it. After an extensive search, it was found in one of her beloved dog's mouth. As per the current prediction 2012 will be a pearly year for US first lady Michelle Obama, J Lopez and Sarah Jessica Parker.
PEARLY CELEBS Truly a universal jewel, pearl is not only adorned by Indians but by western beauties too. Among the famous pearl-lovers are yesteryear’s style masters like Jackie O and Princess Diana. Mary Queen of Scots had one of the earliest collector of pearls. Her collection flaunted the most famous pieces- a six-strand rosary, consisting of more than 600 pearls. Similarly, the world famous pearl - the La Peregrina (a very large pear-shaped white pearl) - is owned by actress Elizabeth Taylor gifted by her husband Richard Burton. It was found by a slave in the early 1500s in the Gulf of Panama and later owned by a long line of royalty. Interestingly,

couture
While some trends are slow to catch on, others spread like wildfire. Not surprisingly, today's accessory du jour, cap-toe shoes, fall under the latter category. A far cry from the classic cap-toes of Coco Chanel's era - the designer created the first pair in 1957. The current interpretations of these chic, toe-dipped shoes manage to be both ladylike and subtly edgy and feature everything from of-the-moment contrasting colour combos to modern textures. Spotted in countless spring collections (Christian Louboutin, Giuseppe Zanotti, and Louis Vuitton, to name a few), today's Accessory Report is proof that cap-toe shoes are must!
They say all things old are new again, so the recent resurgence of retro-style shades comes as no surprise. Slightly oversized sunglasses with exaggerated frames are a celebrity staple, perhaps, because their enlarged size helps them escape the constant flash of paparazzi cameras! In a variety of shapes and colours, these chic sunnies add a quirky finishing touch to any outfit. So even if you're not trying to hide from photographers, take a cue from celebrities like Nicole Richie and Rihanna, and inject your look with just the right amount of fashionforward flair.

Monsoon and lip gloss - craziest combination ever! Gloss can smudge with a little exposure to humidity. Contrary to it, lipsticks are reliable alternatives. The cosmetic market offers brands with long-lasting effects. Go with blood red effect which is season and one palette that doesn’t go out of fashion. To carry it perfectly, don a nude makeup for the face with a pop up of red. This will not only add drama, but also fetch you high fashion impact. For the night, adding smoky eyes will do the rest of the magic. Equally captivating are the tones like neon pink (which was widely popularised by Nanette Lepore’s Summer / Spring 2012 collection) and similarly a shade of orange like tangerine. If you want to keep it simple go for the classy and natural makeup trends. Get a nude look with just a lip balm!

To remove the dead skin, make a mixture of honey and sugar granules and lightly massage it over your lips. For supple rosy lips apply a paste of crushed rose petals and cream or crushed papaya. Even beetroot juice enhances the colour of your lips. Discolouration can be dealt with a mixture of honey and lemon.

It is not just the downpour, but the season also witnesses high humidity. Thus the face should be treated with minimal foundation and concealer. The base should be with primers which helps absorb the excess moisture from the skin and prevents makeup from blotching. Monsoon makeup should be kept brighter during the day and slightly dull at night. To make it light, you can carry a pancake all the time. Just before you sleep, use a tone two levels fairer than your skin colour, again avoiding powder. Prefer mattifying over greasy foundations. Open pores on the skin caused due to humidity can be tackled by toners for dry and astringents for oily skins. Rubbing ice for 5 - 10 minutes can lessen perspiration and retain the makeup for long.

A face pack can be a one stop solution for monsoon woes. For dry skin - take jojoba oil, honey and fresh curd, all mixed in equal quantities. Apply the paste on your face and neck, leave for 10 minutes and rinse it off with lukewarm water. For oily skin a mixture of equal drops of rose water, fresh orange juice and strawberry oil should be applied on the face for 10 minutes and then washed.
TIPS
Time to let your mane be simple! Some of the easy to maintain hairstyles are in during the monsoons! Go for a shorter haircut like asymmetrical bob with longer sides which is easier to manage. Elaborate hairstyles are not only tough to tame but also look bad with limp damp hair. You may use bang and layered hairstyles instead. Avoid any kind of hair treatments including perming or straightening. Wash your hair as soon as possible if you get drenched. Never brush or comb wet hair.
Honey and olive oil mask - Make a mixture of one part of honey with two parts of olive oil. Apply it on the hair and wash it off with shampoo after letting it sit for 15 - 20 minutes. Banana mash - Mash one banana and add a dash of olive oil to it. Apply it on your hair. Leave it for 15 minutes and wash it off with warm water and shampoo.

The season gives you an opportunity to sport this avatar with a fresh out-of-the-sea hair appearance. Just set your hair wet with hair gel. Extend the look to your face also. stress-free existence is perhaps a myth! Starting from a school-going kid to a high-profile businessman, an employee to homemaker, everybody seems to be undergoing this malaise. The causes and symptoms might vary but managing the stress and making life better is the need of the hour. Faster heartbeat, rapid breathing, trembling, dizziness, nausea and vertigo are a few common symptoms. Let it not suck the life out of you. Instead of running to a doctor and gobbling down pills, you can beat stress the following way. W
Making healthy food choices - Who said coffee can beat stress? Sugar and caffeine are your biggest enemies. Chuck away all sugary and carbohydrate loaded stuff and welcome greens and fruits. Fresh fruit and vegetable salads, chicken, fish and grains are excellent stress-busters. Include them in the meals whenever you feel low!
1
Relax in a quiet place - Run away from the hustle bustle of your work place or your home and sit peacefully in a corner. Noises and too much disturbance can make stress painful. If you don’t have a proper place to relax, you can even sit in your bathroom.
2
Curl up - Your bed or an easy chair can be your best friend when you are completely stressed. Curl up with a good book and a cup of herbal tea or cocoa. Relief on your fingertips!
3
Bathe your soul too - Play soft music and relax in a tub. Add some rose petals and essential oils like lavender or rosemary to warm water. Light candles all around and dim the lights. Clear your mind of all the stress while you enjoy an aromatic bath.
4
Visit a spa - Take a day off from your work schedule and visit a spa. The aromatic massages and therapies will work wonders on your mind and body. It is the best way to relax when you have had enough of everything.
5
Trust yoga and meditation - This ancient exercise form is the best to reduce body weight and it also manages stress. The various asanas and meditation techniques help relax both body and mind and maintain mental equilibrium. You can gain a better perspective on life. Meditate at least for 10 minutes either in the morning or in the evening. Practise yoga everyday for quick relief from tension and stress. 6
Keep afloat - Go to the nearest swimming pool or a lake or a tank and splash in cold water for a while. Swimming is great for reducing stress. 7
Hobby time - Painting, dancing, taking photographs, singing or gardening, whatever it is, pursue your favourite hobby, taking time off from the hectic schedule. You would anyway need a break every now and then. 8
Sound of music - Soft music too is a stress buster. Lovely mix of tunes and songs has the power to soothe your nerves. Lie down on your couch and play all your favourite melodies. If you have the energy, then sing along and vent out all the stress. 9
Laugh a lot - Laughter is the best medicine for all problems and particularly for stress. Catch up with friends and enjoy a good laugh or get some comedy films and watch them till you are tired of laughing. 10
Spend time with pets - Sit with your pet dog or cat and talk out your stress. Pets are patient enough to listen to you and they love it absolutely. Cuddle up with your puppy and play. 11
Reading - Be it about King Napoleon or just a comic book, reading can divert your mind and keep you away from pressure. Get inspired by books and organise your thoughts to make life beautiful. 12
Prioritize your work - We just have 24 hours! Sit and analyse how much work you can do in a day. Put the most important things on the top and the rest for the later part of the day. Cramming up your work schedule and idling away can make you rush in the last minute. Take care of things before they turn into problems. 13
Positive attitude - Count the blessings you have, stop cribbing about what you lack, don’t get dejected, take life easy and maintain a positive attitude 24/7. This mantra really helps in de-stressing yourself. 14

Given the foodies a chance, I am sure biryani would undoubtedly qualify as our national dish. The sensational mix of spices, the aroma that can turn you on anytime, the elongated fragrant basmati rice, the succulent meat or the luscious vegetables - together cook up the fantawesome biryani. Whether to treat the guests or have a quick bite with family on an outing or to satiate the hungry stomach at the midnight after a party, there can’t be a better saviour than this wonder food. Chicken, mutton, fish, egg or vegetables - be it in any combination, it can eclipse any other dish. It has its origin in Persia, deriving its name from the Persian word 'Birian', means 'roasted before cooking'. The first Indian-biryani encounter has different versions. A few say, Taimor Lang, a Turkic ruler, introduced it to Northern India. Another fable says it was Mumtaz Mahal, wife of Shahjahan, who invented it as a ‘complete meal’ to feed the army. Whatever the legend may be, it spread all over the country and acquired unique local flavours in the transaction. We have as many as 30 varieties of Biryani. Chef Pritam Das of The Park, Vizag, dishes out six exclusive delectable vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions of Biryani in their classic representation and contemporary interpretation! ustralia, the land Down Under, is fast emerging as a favoured alternative destination to Europe and is being featured extensively on the TV and in Bollywood flicks. It may have made headlines for the wrong reasons some times, but I can vouch that it is safe as I travelled there with my family. The greeting phrase one hears more than anything else here is “Cheers Mate - it defines the friendly Aussies who love their beer. For a lot of Indians, the fascination and connection with Australia starts off with cricket and the Australian Open Tennis - I remember as a young boy waking up at 5 am only to be enamoured by the outstanding TV coverage of these sports. Australians simply love sports and the outdoors. Staying physically active is a way of life here (also explains why they win so many Olympics medals!). In Brisbane (the 3rd largest city in Australia), I was amazed to see that everything shuts down by 6 pm as people head home to spend time with family, attend an Aussie barbeque or explore the outdoors. entertaining daily shows, captivating feeding sessions and enhanced walkthrough habitats including Koala Encounters, the Outback and Butterfly Tropics. It is conveniently located right in the heart of Sydney on Darling Harbour. Sydney Aquarium allows you
to walk in glass-walled tunnels with sharks swimming overhead. Interested in combining a night tour with an amazing Aboriginal Corroboree show? Check out the Currumb in Sanctuary Wildlife Adventure in the Gold Coast.
Built by billions of tiny coral living organisms, the Great Barrier Reef’s grandeur is only seen to be believed. The massive reef supports a diversity of exotic and colourful wildlife turtles, whales and fish, including the Clownfish better known as Nemo, making it the most ideal spot to explore underwater wildlife in its natural habitat. The best way to discover the reef’s magnificence is on a boat tour from Cairns. (Great Adventures is an excellent tour provider www.greatadventures.com.au and the Cairns Visitor Centre is a good information resource www. cairnsvisitorcentre.com). The boats take you close to the reef and provide a variety of options to explore the underwater - from the glass-bottom viewing areas in the boat to snorkeling, scuba diving or the unique “Scuba-Doo”for the more adventurous. Scuba-Doo is a scooterlike device, on which one can explore the depths of ocean floor without diving equipment - a must-do for everyone (including non-swimmers). These boats come with a traditional barbeque, which is welcome after a day in the warm ocean.
Go Wild There are several jungle tours from Brisbane and Cairns (www.jungletours.com.au) where you can explore the rainforests. A relaxed way to experience the diverse wildlife is through a trip to the Lone Pine Kola Sanctuary (www.koala.net) in Brisbane. Get clicked with a cuddly Koala bear, feed kangaroos, hold a snake and meet the platypus, dingo and the Tasmanian Devil. More than just a zoo, “WILDLIFE” Sydney features interactive displays, inspiring and

Wonders Galore Sydney, replete with pleasant surprises, is not just another big city. The iconic Sydney Opera House, a multi-venue performing arts centre, is known for its distinctive architecture. As you take the informative tour, you gain an appreciation for its fascinating history and the challenges behind designing and building this complex shell structure. Of course, watching a show is the best way to experience the Opera House. It is located right next to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which lends itself to some spectacular pictures, especially at night. These are iconic pictures of not just Sydney, but all of Australia. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is the world’s largest steel arch bridge, 134 metres above sea level. At the very least you should walk across the bridge, but the adventurous should go to
the southern half of the bridge (www.bridgeclimb.com) for the “climb of your life”. Cricket lovers should not miss an opportunity to visit the legendary Sydney Cricket Ground for a tour, even if no matches are scheduled. Brisbane features the smaller but scenic Gabba. The Sydney Pass (http://seesydneypass.iventure card.com/sydney-tourist-attractions) is an economical way to see the city. One of the scenic ways is to take a harbour cruise. For a panoramic view during sunset, go to the Sydney Tower Eye (www.sydneytowereye.com.au). It features an observation deck and a 360-degree SkyWalk experience 268 mts. above ground level. You can unwind at Darling Harbour, the Rocks and Circular Quay, the best waterfront restaurants and bars. You can see the diversity of restaurant choices with a strong Asian influence. The city has an excellent public transportation system (trains and boats), so pick up a map. If you want to take a day trip outside the city, the spectacular “Blue Mountains” are worth a visit.
Adventure Sports
You can go Hot Air Ballooning at most places but the best activity is Zorbing. Zorbing is a giant bouncy 3 metre PVC ball. Jump inside. It rolls and so do you! Getting wet is one of the two ways of Zorbing. The Gold Coast offers Extreme Jet-boating, Jet-Skiing, Skydiving, Parasailing and Zip-Lining, besides Aquaduck Safari tours, Whale Watching and Wildlife Eco-tours. Hop onto a charter boat and catch a variety of fish - you can opt to just catch and release.
Places To Stay There is a variety of hotels and apartments suitable for all budgets and lifestyles. The apartment model can be very cost effective, especially for families and large groups. Tripadvisor, Booking.com, Cleartrip and Makemytrip are resources to find highly rated properties at great deals. The Oxygen Apartments in Brisbane is located in the quiet neighbourhood of Spring Hill, close to the Central Business District. 181, The Esplanade in Cairns is located on the seafront with great views of the Great Barrier Reef. In Sydney, I recommend Darling Harbour or Circular Quayfor their proximity to all the main attractions.
Dining The climate makes barbecues commonplace and its long coastline makes fresh seafood a common staple. You can see the British Commonwealth influence with roasts and fish and chips, but the influence
of South Asian and Mediterranean immigrants have now diversified the restaurant choices. There are some for the conventional palate too. If you are a vegetarian, the options are limited, but you can find your way easily especially in the big cities. Indian Restaurants are now commonplace though they skew towards North Indian cuisine. Vapiano in Brisbane and the Gold Coast features excellent organic Italian cooking. They truly believe in local flavour, sourcing all their ingredients from within 150 km of their store and make their own pasta/pizza every day. Wagamama features Asian Fusion cooking and is one of 39 wonderful restaurants on the Darling Harbour waterfront in Sydney (Zaffran is great choice for Indian contemporary cuisine). The Circular Quay and the ‘Rocks’ area feature small quaint restaurants. Australia’s iconic brand is Fosters beer. Victoria Bitters and craft beers like Coopers are popular too in this home of fine beers. Shiraz is the most popular wine from Australia, but you can also buy some wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Semillon, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc. red | december 2011 | 55
Trip Planner
The best times to go are September to April. December can be very expensive as all the locals are off on vacation. You can get a visa from the Australian High Commission in New Delhi. If you have a week, you can explore Brisbane, Cairns and Sydney including the Gold Coast and the Great Barrier Reef. If you have more time you should explore Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. If you really want to explore the Aborigines and desert, I recommend going to Darwin and Alice Springs. You could potentially use the additional week to include New Zealand.
The best and cheapest way to fly into Australia is to take a connection via South East Asia (Singapore, Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur). Flights are long - taking at least 14 hours. But be assured, the destination makes it totally worth the long journey. Driving between towns is not recommended given the distances. Qantas, Virgin Blue and Jetstar fly between all the major cities and offer competitive fares. Within the cities, taxis and public transportation are easily available and can help you get around comfortably. It is highly recommended that you book your stays and activities well in advance, especially during peak seasons. Cell phone reception and Internet availability are excellent throughout the main cities. ATMs are everywhere (Westpac, Commonwealth, ANZ and National Australia Banks are the big banks). R

ROSSO It was a month of parties at Rosso. Among many, the most exhilarating was the one in which the party freaks came under the spell of an international dance night with Trance, Funky House, Dub step and live Hip-hop, themed as “Trance-ition”. The added thump was induced by DJ Snigdha Kari, Rahul Chandani and DJ/Emcee Aishan Vali. Certainly it was a spirit-elevating evening. Equally interesting was a private party, where city’s cream crowd was seen rejoicing the occasion. Music, drinks, delectable food and buddies made a deadly combination, making every soul groove. The star of the day also didn’t lag behind and was spotted enjoying the attention from the guests.

Nikitha Reddy came up with an interesting party yet again this time. It was christened ‘Charminar to China’ and all the young lasses were dressed in colourful cheongsams. The décor too represented the Chinese culture complementing the attires and food. Asian mocktails and Oriental dishes kept coming in while the ladies enjoyed fun games. Bobby, Preeti and Neha, who came in colourful kimonos, were adjudged the best dressed women of the evening. All in all, a great party, a la China style!

LEO (July 21 - Aug. 22)
ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Even though your days and nights are filled with responsibilities, work and caring for others, you enjoy robust health this July besides having job satisfaction. You are supported by the ‘committed other’ in your endeavours. There will be some conflict between others’ needs and those of yours. You have to control your anger and be careful with what you utter during this month, especially around 22nd. Around 21st, your attention will be drawn to that committed other.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) Unlike the natives of Aries, your energy levels remain hidden. Romance is all over you this July. But you should be careful about romantic inclinations. Despite struggles, you will achieve your goals with optimism. Don’t be extravagant. You need to rest and relax. Sometimes you are philosophical and independent while seeking security within relationship. People around you seek your advice on marriage and relationships.
red | july 2012 | 187
GEMINI (May 23 - June 20) You feel the need to spruce up yourself. The planets aren’t all that happy with your plans and could work against you on 22nd. You may feel frustrated that everything is monotonous and nothing is exciting anymore. You are a bit obsessive and want to grumble a lot. These are not in your best interests. What is needed is a sense of confidence. Try and exercise self-praise. You may have new romantic opportunities in the last week.
CANCER (June 21 - July 20) Your main focus is on your family - its past, present and future. You should be careful as something you say at work place could land you in trouble. Don’t take your eyes off the road even just for a moment, as it could result in an accident. A reunion brings you both sadness and insight. You must do whatever is good and fun and new and beautiful. On 21st, you are drawn to the home front more than usual.
Natives of this sign are busy this month. Keep your cool and remember that Mercury helps in expressing aims and reasons effectively. Step outside, take walks and chat with neighbours. Make contact with siblings and visit your childhood home. Memories will comfort and sustain you. Don’t overeat and overindulge.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 22) Filled with energy this month, your focus is on money matters. There could be some surprises, as well. Don’t overstrain yourself and think deeply about all goals. Beware of health problems that may be difficult to diagnose and treat. Expect some surprises from close acquaintances. New ideas may flash.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 20) The career sector of your chart is ablaze this month. Even as the future beckons, you must have a perfect judgment and practical sense concerning the present. You can have goals, plans and schemes, but don’t dismiss each day as it comes along. Relationship issues will probably be a major motivating force for you for the next year. Something unexpected occurs in the family. It is better if you lay down some constructive planning and make a roadmap to achieve goals.
LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 22) Though you may choose to sit back and relax, it is right time for you to reflect on the past year. You should be careful at work. A sort of explosion, anger and expectations or maybe a silence with hidden agendas may occur. It is at this juncture you should be composed and wait until the right time to talk. You may be drawn to romance. Don’t lose temper if something reappears from the past. Your energy will return around 21st. Do not allow limitations of the mind inhibit your inner perception.
Scorpio (Oct. 23 - Nov. 21) This month is very happy time for you, offering great surprises on home front. Don’t grudge hard work, your career will get a major boost. The last week may see your energy level slipping out and you may feel the urge to retreat from life for a while. You may find a romantic interest. It is better to remember the past and reshape all ideas that need for new vision.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) You should have responsible and steadfast work pattern. Don't try to be in the limelight. Concentrate a bit more on what makes you creative. If you are looking for vacation, now is the time. Pack your bags and don’t look back. After 14th you may have to return to routine. The call to return may come for obligations in the employment / career area. It is time for you to shine especially after 21st. You will feel a relentless urge to clean up, clear out, and renovate everything dusty. Be careful and avoid getting hurt.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 - Feb. 18) It’s time to watch the family budget. You are in a generous mood. Be sure to both give and receive. You may have to travel on an important business work. People from far away assist you. This forms part of your future work. Your own creativity when it comes to juggling the check book and financial responsibilities comes as a surprise. Be careful while driving and communicating.
PISCES (Feb. 18 - March 20) You will have ample energy as far as relationships are concerned and have to deal with old grievances. You'll find the movement is fast and furious this month. Don’t go on a spending spree around 23rd and exercise thrift and try to be closer to your family members.
