ENCOURAGING INDIA’S LAADLIS Population First, a Mumbai-based NGO announced the winners of the sixth edition of Laadli Media and Advertising Awards 2013-14 for gender sensitivity. The winners were selected from the eastern and southern zone this time, based on their contribution to gender-just perspectives. As many as 32 journalists were felicitated for their path-breaking stories on subjects like child trafď€ cking, transgenders etc. The awards were given away by Chief Guest Mr.Gollupudi Maruthi Rao, Writer and Cine Artiste. SPREADING AWARENESS, IMPROVING LIVES Rohit Memorial Trust (RMT) organized a donation and cancer awareness camp for migrants below the poverty level living under the Kancharpalem Bridge. More than 200 families attended the event. Earlier, the trust had donated blankets, rice and clothes at Rambili Village post-Hudhud and also food and essentials to Jalaripeta and Bhimili. The trust is planning a Breast Cancer and Cervical Cancer awareness camp and will set up a medical unit in the area. GAIETY MARKS TGR BIRTHDAY It was celebration time at Tippala residence. Cutting across the party lines, all prominent political leaders of the region and celebrities from various walks of life converged at Gajuwaka to greet the former MLA, Mr.Gurumurthy Reddy on his birthday. NEERU’S NOW A FAMILY STORE Neeru’s has opened a brand new showroom in Vizag, giving the shopaholics another reason to splurge. While earlier they catered only to women, now the brand has expanded its reach by opening its rst family store. Actress Sanjana inaugurated the showroom at Sampath Vinayagar Road. The traditional lamp was lighted by Director Mrs. Neeru Kumar. Mr.Harish Kumar, MD and Avnish, Director graced the occasion. Started in 1971, as a tailoring unit in Hyderabad, Neeru’s has spread out across India and has traced its way in the international market in Dubai as well. THE ‘MIGHTY’ GENDER SENSITIVITY DRIVE The importance of gender sensitivity perhaps couldn’t have been explained better than Carolyn Danckaert and Aaron Smith, co-founders of A Mighty Girl. This couple from Pittsburgh runs an online venture to promote gender sensitivity. They along with U.S. Consulate General Representative from Hyderabad took students, teachers and parents on a digital journey. Whipping up participative sessions with a digital presentation and incorporating interesting exercises, the couple explained how storytelling and communicating can go a long way in bringing awareness on gender sensitivity among children. The parenting session was hosted by Teeny Boppers Play School and Kindergarten. Carolyn and Aaron spoke on how their online venture that has a collection of books, toys and parenting resources is an outcome of their long-cherished dream. BACHPAN RETURNS WITH A GRAND SHOW Children were in their element at the annual day programme of Bachpan Returns at Vemulapalli Kalakshatram Vysakhi Sports Park. ESPERANZA PUTS UP GRAND SHOW Tiny tots were at their jubilant best during the annual day function of Esperanza pre-school held at the Visakha auditorium of Four Point Sheraton. There were multiple performances put up by the kids. That included dancing to popular tunes and reciting rhymes. N CIRCLE(S) VIZAG’S SHOPAHOLICS N– Circle is the newest landmark on the busy VIP road. The showroom opened the doors to its vast collection on the auspicious day of Ugadi in a special preview. Prior to the event the style muse hosted a press meet in the city to give a preview of the Pochampally collection she was taking to New York. On this occasion she was joined by Regina. The actor was looking stunning with a sunshine glow as she donned a Pochampally weave peplum dress with oral embroidery from Shilpa’s collection. The designer herself was looking equally attractive in a Pochampally light green churidaar kurta. Former minister Dr. J. Geeta Reddy was seen encouraging the ace designer who was addressing the media.

Tamannaah, who is also the Creative Head of Wite & Gold, looks pretty excited about her new venture. However, it raised many speculations among her fans who ask ‘Is it an end to her lmy career?’ or ‘just a smart trick to be in the limelight?’ It appears she doesn’t have many lms in her kitty. Only the other day there was jubilation in the party cadre when Jagan named Swamy for A.P Legislative Council. At the same time there were a few voices of dissent too. Some YSRCP men were nettled because Swamy was given preference over senior and more experienced leaders. It may be recalled that Swamy sacriced his MLC seat and Congress to join YSRCP and unsuccessfully contested the 2014 elections. H

e had all those emblematic qualities expected of entrepreneurs, i.e. determined, creative and focused to reach towering goals. Not surprisingly Kaushik Vaishnav found himself joining the bandwagon of Start-up companies. There was nothing that could stop him from becoming one of the key players in the region. Quiz him about his journey and you will get to hear some interesting episodes. The most fascinating of the stories is of his father joining his business and not vice versa. For a man of his age, it’s quite an achievement. Isn’t it? With his dream venture Unisonn, which is now almost a six-year-old reality, he is setting new records in the eld of construction chemicals, cooling towers and pile foundation.


Base In our family we are quite a mixed lot. My great grandfather was a doctor, grandfather was an academician and father, Mr. K.K Vaishnav was a civil engineer. I turned out to be the rst generation entrepreneur. After obtaining a B.Tech degree in Electronic and communication from Pydah College, I left for the US to pursue masters in the University of Mississippi. In 2009 I was India bound and in the same year I launched my company Unisonn Driving Force I always wanted to do something related to civil engineering. But my father was not in favour of it. So, I had to select electronics and communication and made it to Satyam through a campus selection. However, after attending its one-week- long induction session, I realized I could not connect to their working style. That’s when I decided to oat my own company. My logic was, being self-employed; rstly one has immense freedom with respect to work strategies; secondly, one has to own up for his/ her mistake, and at the same time can enjoy rewards of a good deed. Unisonn started as a construction chemicals manufacturing company and the very next year it diversied to industrial construction with a specialization in cooling towers and pile foundations. The main reason behind choosing this specialization was my father. Witnessing my passion in the eld, he came forward to mentor me. He had three decades of experience in the eld and worked with brands like Paharpur Cooling Towers Ltd, Gammon India. I wanted him to join my venture. He was working at a senior management position at Hamon Shriram Cottrell in Mumbai, I could not lure him away from it as he was beyond my budget. He eventually joined Unisonn in July 2014. Christening Cue The word ‘unison’ struck me when I was in seventh standard. It means to be

together. Nothing works unless you are in sync with one another. Well, the double ‘n’ is added to please numerologists. Even our tagline says ‘undeterred unanimity’, stressing that it is always a team effort which takes any company to success. Challenges The very rst hassle was nance. It appeared as a great risk to my father who cautioned me stating “If you fail in the initial years of your career it might pull down your condence so much that you might not be able to stand up

However, my struggle didn’t end there. For our core competence, i.e. the construction chemicals, we are a franchise of a company called Fairmate Chemicals Pvt. Ltd. It has a very strong presence in north India, but no existence at all in the southern part of the country. Names like Sika, BASF, Forsoc are the market leaders in the region, who were giving us tough competition. We tried the catch line- “try us, if not satised, you have alternate options.” It worked, I succeeded in cracking deals. Strategy In the initial years, I used to work like an employee. Even now for many of my clients, I am just a representative of the company. I found it was easy to handle the transactions that way. When it comes to my employees, I am no boss. We are a team. I keep telling them, “I am a servant to the company, and there is an ample room for sharing new ideas and suggestions.”

On paper all I had to do was to sell the products, qualifying its competitive pricing in comparison with others. Next I had to convince them on quality. I thought I had won half the battle as pricing plays a crucial role in capturing the market. But I soon realized the reality. Despite these positive factors in my favour, my success in the market depended not only on the sale of products but on their correct application as well. If the man on the job doesn’t apply the product properly, the client complains about the product. This was affecting my credibility. Proud Project Over the years the company has handled numerous projects and each time set a new benchmark. We are very proud to have bagged the coveted project of Bay Park Hotel. Another proud project was the 180 meter-tall cooling tower of GMR in Raipur. It was quite a challenging task and we had to complete it in ve months. A major share of the credit goes to my father. Without him it would have been just a dream. USP Unisonn is not just about earning money, but also about valuing relationship with clients. On the Cards We are expanding in terms of scale and variety which require us to shift base from Autonagar to Gambheeram. We are planning to get into retail for our in-house construction chemicals. In retail industry, earning a brand name is important and we have reached that stage. I am taking another plunge in a totally different eld, i.e. pyrodiesel. It is about producing diesel from used tires. It is a joint venture and we have set up our factory in Achyutapuram and operations will start from next month. Later this year I am planning to get into solid waste management. Advice Frankly speaking, pardon my being a bit selsh, I don’t want anyone to enter this eld. There are many who talk about stars, but only a few will hold your hand and take you there. So don’t go by words, be logical and practical. T

hey have become an indispensable part of Hyderbadis’ life for the past 125 years. Be it engagement, wedding, baby shower, birth or house warming; they are there, present in every occasion sparkling on the ngers, shining on the waist, dazzling on the ears or glittering on the neck of the denizens. Manepally Jewellers are not just a vintage brand but an extension of almost every Hyderabadi’s life. The men behind this trinket heritage have stories that include not just their individual journeys but also of the evolution of the city’s jewellery culture over the century. Here we have the captain of the present Manepally team, Mr.Ramarao Manepally and his two key players Muralikrishna and Gopikrishna. This father-sons team has tamed the kinetic market effortlessly.


He is an expert who has all answers about jewellery on his nger tips. He became the sole torch-bearer of the business which came to him passing three generations. “I am 60+ and waiting to see my grandchildren to chip in. I know there is a long way to go,” says Manepally Ramarao. An excellent artist as well, off-work this veteran trader nds himself before the canvas. The Origin The enterprise was started in 1890 by Manepally Raghavulu, my great grandfather in Sarafa Bazar, Secunderabad. In the next generation the late Mr.Muthyalu took it over and he was succeeded by my father Mr.Subbaiah. Then it was my turn. We settled in Hyderabad since 1845. Quite obviously I was literally brought up on trade. In 1973, after completing my graduation, I joined the State Bank of India and worked for three years. Arrival of my two sons made me enter steel and iron business too. I wanted one of them to work in our family trade and the other in the steel business. Though I was running it with considerable success, I had to take over our jewellery business in 1991 because of my father’s ill health. Since then I am here and these days I look after nance, accounts and taxation. Trade in Yesteryears It wasn’t very favourable. Government had introduced the Gold Control Act in 1963-64 and it was in force for almost 25 years till 1990. Hence the jewellers had to face a lot of harassment from excise department and everything was under the governmental control. It was only after the late P.V Narasimha Rao became the Prime Minster that things changed for good, as he opened the doors for liberal business. Competition & Rivals Competition is inevitable in any business. However, I never consider anyone a rival.

Everyone in this trade chalks out his own strategies. Ours is to earn and maintain the trust and faith of customers with right values and quality. Quality Assurance I can proudly say we were rst in the city to adopt BIS hallmarking and I was the one to take the initiative in our business. All our products are hallmarked, which means we assure third party and government guarantee on each and every product. From the manufacturing unit, our products directly go to the hallmarking center. The next level of scrutiny happens at the state-run-qualitycontrol bodies. Once it passes through the stages of authentication, it bears the government’s stamp, hallmark emblem, our brand’s logo and the year of manufacturing. Only after this rigorous certication process, it is on our counters for sale. Favourable Conditions For the past couple of years government is not encouraging gold business. A major factor is current account deciency (CAD) and the government feels it is because of the ever-growing demand for gold in our country. Gold- crazy Indians are bulk buyers and keep on purchasing it. To meet the need, government has to outsource gold from global market and has to pay heavy foreign exchange which results in CAD. It wants to control this situation by allotting fewer funds for gold. This naturally has affected the trader. But there is a ray of hope at the end of tunnel. Government has oated a proposal this year, under which it will accumulate the yellow metal from public like old gold, especially from temples where huge quantities are lying idle. It will start procuring this through banks and in return the owner will be paid interest. This will meet the requirement of both the merchant and customer, reducing the dependence on imports.

Advice There is no substitute for hard work and honesty. Lay a strong foundation and believe in step-by-step growth. Here trends change pretty fast, so observation of the market and thorough research are a must. Prediction Gold will always be great as investment and people keep it as the last resort for the rainy day. As an asset it has easiest liquidity and you can liquidate it as per your unit requirement. Thus, jewellery business will never die. It will grow. My Sons Are Gems: Ramarao Murali and Gopi are my proud possessions (laughs). They are my strength. There is only three years of age difference between the two, but both have same level of maturity. They have taken the responsibilities of both home and work with elan. This has reduced my burden and I can retire anytime. The only principle I gave them is – “keep ego at bay”. I must say they follow it to the letter T. They have picked up the best of me and my wife, but have their own individual traits. This not only rounds off their personalities but helps them build a healthy team. Murali is a leader with a sharp mind and understands the dynamics of business. He is an innovator and keeps experimenting. Gopi is a great follower, who complements his brother with his alertness and can instantly spot lacunae.

eing the eldest born in the fth generation of Manepally clan, Muralikrishna comes across as a perfect man to shoulder the responsibility. With his vast knowledge about patterns, trends and popular demands, he takes care of manufacturing and designing department. Entry of New Blood For the past four-generations in our family, it has been only one son who has been managing the show singlehandedly. We are the rst team of two brothers running the business. Both of us formally entered our business in 1994. From the year 1995 we changed our business into a readymade retail store. Before that it used to be a trade of made-to-order jewellery which ran for over a century. Every business needs upgradation. We took the lead to transform it following the dynamics of the market. Specialized Study The technical-knowhow of the business was naturally passed on to us as we were involved in it passively right from our school days. I joined my grandfather by helping him every day for three to four hours when I was in the seventh standard. I grew up playing with precious gems and metals instead of toys (laughs). I knew I would be the next to shoulder the responsibility. I pursued masters in gemology and it gave me a further insight into the trinket designing. red | april 2015 | 76

Changes Observed Earlier people used to consider jewellery as an investment and were more concerned about the quality. But in recent times they delve into every detail - its make, design and pattern. Everything counts today. We need to change accordingly. Our exclusive in-house craftsmen and designers are in sync with the change. We are experts in providing exclusive handmade jewellery, which is the in thing now. Profit Punch My investment has gone up ve times and it is higher than it is in any other trade, where usually the stock value diminishes. In 1995 gold was less than Rs.500 per gram. Today it is around Rs.2,700 per gram. This shows an annual 15-20% growth in the past 10 years. Any trade which witnesses 500 per cent of appreciation gets into a correction mode. Gold is in a correction level. But, in coming few years, it will bounce back reaching Rs.3,500 per gram. The diamond market too experienced a great hype of 80-100% appreciation in the past decade. During 2010-2015 our business got good support from diamond jewellery. Diamond is affordable now. We have customers, who come for gold shopping but turn into diamond buyers. They don’t mind paying just another Rs.4000-5000 extra. We earn prot by churning out volumes with limited margin. Challenge from Workforce We never faced it. At present there are about 100 people working with us directly and nearly 300 others are associated with us indirectly. My craftsmen have been working for generations with us. They are our asset and the backbone of our business. We respect our craftsmen and staff. They are part of the Manepally family. A man can give his very best only when he is completely satised. Our present turnover is roughly

around Rs.200 crore per annum and it is all because of our craftsmen’s dedication. Expansion We are planning to open a new branch in Punjagutta within six months. I have a few things lined up for 2016-17 like launching multiple stores with an exclusive line in diamond jewellery in Hyderabad. In 2017-18 I intend to venture out into Andhra Pradesh. Suggestion to Newcomers Entrepreneurship is vital for any country’s growth. It is that platform, where you can be successful and create employment for many others. By supporting one other you can progress as a team. Eventually you help the nation to be nancially stronger. To reach this goal, the government has to be entrepreneur-friendly. The jewellery eld requires delicate handling, with prime importance given to building customers’ trust. This can be accomplished only through sincere dedication and commitment. Back home, have dinner with the entire family, as ours is a joint family. I never spend my day in an unplanned manner, thus everything needs to be scheduled beforehand. Sunday is dedicated to the family. We have a farm and mango garden of around 40 acres area located about 35 km from the city. A part of it is used for paddy cultivation too. I love to spend time there involving myself in agricultural activities. I try to be there at least twice a week. We are pucca vegetarians and teetotalers, thus we enjoy more of family functions rather than hitting pubs or clubs.

Claiming that he inherited his business acumen from his father, the young entrepreneur gives a major share of credit to Mr.Ramarao. “You can say I am the face of the store (laughs). I am responsible for customer handling,” he says pointing out his role in the business. Specialty of Manepally It is our wedding collection. Most of the products others have are machine-made and casting mould jewellery. It is tough to get handmade products. No one can beat us. Our focus is not just on Hyderabad market, but the global one. This keeps us ahead. At this stage, I don’t consider online business as a threat. It might be a situation in coming years. But for now, web shopping is ne for casual jewellery or for light-weight gift items. But if it is about heavier or wedding trinkets, an Indian customer would like to feel, try and buy.

Beauty of Gold I reiterate the trends are ever changing in this eld. The beauty and best advantage of gold is that we can re-use it, with marginal loss of making charges. It’s a part and parcel of the business. Gold or silver can be re-shaped and re-moulded.

Trends There is a drastic change in customers’ taste. Kundan, nakkas, nizam and antique are the rage now. At present we have completed our R&D report, studying customer’s requirement and preferences for current as

What are your expectations from Jil? There is a perception that in a commercial film the female lead only has to look glamorous. I can assure you that I have a performance oriented role. Don’t go by the songs alone, Savitri is a very strong character and the role is any actor’s dream. She is a spoilt brat, happy-go-lucky and doesn’t think twice before saying anything. I was initially very scared to play this role because I am a shy person in real life. Somehow I pulled it off, don’t ask me how I did it (laughs). A lot of people told me I had turned into a glam doll and that they miss seeing the Prabhavati of Madras Café on screen. Now that Jil is released, I am sure they will have no such complaints. Isn’t your statement contradictory, considering that you have recently agreed to do an item song for Akhil Akkineni’s film. No, it is a rumour and I have been reading it everywhere. I am so glad that you asked me. No such offer has ever come to me and these are all false reports. Your liplock with Gopichand in Jil has created a huge buzz It is not a liplock or a passionate kiss, it is just a peck. Not that I am against liplocks in films. I think they are as normal as scenes where one laughs. We unnecessarily fuss about it. From Delhi to Mumbai to Hyderabad, how has the journey been for you? Honestly speaking, I do miss Delhi because I have my family and friends there. However, as a city I like Hyderabad more. I may even consider settling here. My journey has been very unpredictable. Not the one to believe in destiny, I always thought that if you work hard you can always change your luck. But when I now look at myself, I feel like I am destiny’s child. Be it modeling or acting, I never had to struggle that much. The manner in which I found my way into this industry is surprising to say the least. How did you land your first role? Soon after I started modeling in Delhi, my agency merged with a celebrity management firm in Mumbai which asked me to shift base. I wasn’t too willing but another friend of mine was also moving to Mumbai, so I decided to go with her. Incidentally my parents were very kicked about the idea. My father always thought I spent too many hours studying (laughs). A month later, in Mumbai, I got my first ad for Tata Sky. The casting director of Madras Café spotted me in the ad and called me for an audition. I was sure I won’t get the role, it was opposite John Abraham. But as destiny would have it, they called me in a week’s time and said I was finalized. Were you nervous when you shot the first scene with John? Not at all, I have never been very star struck. Of course I respect John but when I met him I didn’t feel ‘oh my god I am working with such a big star’. When it comes to acting I don’t get nervous, regardless of who is in front of me (pauses)… Maybe I am a little nervous off set, but when the cameras are rolling I become the character.

You both started your career as models, did John give you any tips? He just told me ‘you should be who you are, don’t change and never listen to anyone else. If you are good at acting you will make it’. Why did you choose a Telugu film after Madras Café? Initially you don’t choose a script, the script chooses you. Also, to be honest, after Madras Café I wasn’t flooded with offers. Yes, they appreciated me as an actor but the journey from then on wasn’t too easy. That is when Telugu happened. I only associated Telugu films with song and dance but when I read the script of Oohalu... I was blown away. It was an amazing story and I got to play an equally amazing character. I realized that they make good cinema here as well. Today if there is a better script in Tollywood, I would do that over a Bollywood film. Was language a barrier when you entered the Telugu film industry? It wasn’t but it did scare me because my first film had a lot of dialogues. I have a Telugu speaking friend who helped me with the script. I don’t know how, but gradually I just picked up Telugu. When you are surrounded by people who speak the language you tend to learn it very quickly. Do you speak Telugu fluently now? Yes, sort of. I had recorded a song for my second film in the language. I can form sentences on my own but am not very confident that I am saying the right thing (laughs). But hey I totally understand when someone is speaking in front of me. Incidentally when I shot my first scene in Telugu after completing the workshops, the director was worried if I could pull it off. But when I gave my first take the people on the sets were shocked to see that I speak like a Telugu girl. My English also has a Telugu accent now. At home I sometimes subconsciously switch to Telugu and my parents just stare at me. They tell me that I belong in Hyderabad.

You had once commented that in Telugu films, heroines are reduced to just dancing dolls. Yes, I did initially feel that but after Oohalu Gusagusalaade was offered to me, my perception changed. It is by all means one of the best roles I have played.

Talking about heroines, you will be sharing the screen space with Tamannah in your upcoming film, Bengal Tiger. Do you fear competition?

Competition would be the wrong word. Tamannah is a very experienced actor, there is a lot I can learn from her. I am a very secure person, you won’t ever see me worrying about whose role will be appreciated more. I will try to do justice to whatever role is given to me. I think I will have a good time on the sets. Any non Telugu speaking actor you admire? It has to be Tamannah, when she came to this industry she didn’t know Telugu, but if you hear her speak now, you would feel that she has always lived here. She belongs here. You are a popular name today, how do you deal with stardom? Oh not very well. Let me tell you an incident, the first time I went to Tirupathi, the entire road was blocked by my followers. They were calling me Prabha and not Rashi, hopping all around me. I was told earlier that I have some loyal fans but I didn’t know that they were so madly in love with Prabhavati, the character I played in Oohalu.... I had around 40 body guards around me but even they couldn’t control the crowd. I wasn’t

Little known fact about you: I was a geek and a topper in school Your father wanted you to be: An IAS officer Most comfortable in: I am a pajama girl when I am at home overwhelmed or happy instead I started crying. I just couldn’t take it. My manager was surprised, he said I should be happy to have such a great fan following. But I just couldn’t digest all the attention I was getting. As a child I was very fat, shy and preferred to be in a corner. And then suddenly I was put on this pedestal, turning into the apple of everyone’s eye. I am still not very used to such attention. Tell us about your childhood Like I said, I was very shy and developed cold feet on stage. The confidence with which I entered the film industry shocked my friends who had never seen that side of me. Are you dating anyone? I am not but I want to, I have been single for the longest time. My friends have lost hope in me. They constantly keep asking me how I can’t find a single guy, when there are so many goodlooking men in this industry. Nobody is interested in me, I don’t know why (laughs).

orn and brought up in Vizag, he dreamt of making it big as a music director some day. But with no godfather to ease his exhaustive journey, he had nothing but his talent to take him through. Luckily he met renowned film producer Dr. D. Ramanaidu in a chance encounter, five years ago. By the end of the discussion he saw himself inching closer to his dream. Today, at 27, he is three films old and working on several prestigious projects. Vikas Kurimella tells us about his musical voyage. How did you meet Dr.Ramanaidu? My father Mr.K.M.Rao is the Group General Manager at Hotel Green Park in Vizag. One day I saw Mr.Ramanaidu walk into the reception area. Couldn’t believe my luck, I rushed and gave him the CD of my music recordings. He liked it and asked me to compose music for the documentary based on his own life. Called Dr.D.Ramanaidu’s Life History, it was screened in many film clubs and

viewed by several celebrities. Suresh, the director of Jaabilamma was one of them and he gave me my first feature film as a music director. What is your most popular composition? The ‘Made in India’ song that I composed for the film Mythri gave me a tremendous response. It got around 11 lakh hits on Youtube. I still remember vividly the reaction I got from the crew. After composing the song, I reached the location where Sada and Navdeep were shooting. As soon as I entered, all the unit members started clapping. The song impressed Navdeep so much that he recommended me for two more films that are yet to release. When did you realise that you want to be a music director? If I had to pick one moment which kind of opened me to the idea of taking up music as a profession, then it has to be this. When I was in the 11th standard, one day I along with a friend was outside

watching the rain. The climate was lovely and as if on a cue, we both started humming songs one after the other. It just came naturally to me and that is the time when I realized that I can compose music and sing too. I was musically inclined even before that. I used to play guitar and keyboard, but like any other teenager I would sing the compositions of other artistes, the popular ones. But in Class 11, I felt I should make my own music and thankfully in three years I got my first break. How did your parents react? Even though I had made up my mind to become a music director I did not discontinue my studies. It was always there as a back-up. I did my masters in Pharmacy. But I was sure it won’t be my profession because I am not an average 9 to 5 guy. Neither am I employee material & believe me, I am definitely not humble (laughs). So when I told my parents, they were very supportive especially my dad. My mother also started believing in my music after I played a couple of jingles for her. So I didn’t exactly have to be a rebel to follow my passion.


Who was your inspiration? A.R.Rahman, I am a big fan. But to tell you a secret, I think I am an inspiration for many creative souls from Vizag. There was hardly anyone in this field from Visakhapatnam when I entered the industry, so there was no success story back home that could inspire me. However today, after I came to Tollywood, I see many names from Vizag, some heroes and others music directors. I want to believe I inspired them. Apart from music, what are your other hobbies? Cricket. I was the captain of the under -19 team from Vizag. I still play the game. Also add Billiards and Snooker to that list. I regularly play both the games. What are your upcoming releases? The first one is Siva starrer Seetharamula Prema Katha which is being presented by Padmalaya studios. So far it is the biggest banner I have worked for. I just recorded the title song. The film will hit the theatres by July or August this year. I am also working for Raghu Chakravarthy’s untitled film and Ravi K.Sharma’s next.

the music for the same. The video will also feature me (smiles). I will be including romantic tracks, melody, hip hop – many different genres of music in that one album. It will be as good as a jukebox. Before that, will we see you lend your voice for a film song? It is on the cards. I may be recording a song in my voice for Ravi K Sharma’s untitled film. It is a romantic number and mine would be the hero’s voice. The name of the lead hasn’t been finalized yet. How about stage performances, most artistes do live shows to connect with the audience. Will you too? I would most probably be doing a live concert in USA in mid August. It will be organized by Netranjali ads. I am very excited. This is the first time I would be performing for such a large audience abroad. Which song do you wish you had composed? It is a beautiful song from Ye Maya Chasave, an A.R.Rahman composition. Given a chance I would love to add a little fusion to the track. The song is very westernized. Who is your favourite singer? It has to be Shreya Ghoshal. Incidentally I am recording a song with her for Ravi K.Sharma’s film. I always wished that she lent her voice to one of my compositions.

Are you planning to record your own album? I am indeed planning to record one. Hope to release the video in 2016. I would be singing and composing

What is your forte? Every film that I composed the tunes for has been very different from the previous one, so my music didn’t have to be restricted to a particular genre. That is how I always wanted it to be. My music should be refreshing and should touch people’s soul. I have learnt Hindustani and Carnatic music but I love all kinds of music. What kind of music do you like to listen to when alone? I prefer to compose music and not listen to it when alone (laughs). I also like to sing. I sang the chorus for Mythri, the ‘Made in India’ song. Is the Telugu film industry receptive to new talent? I sailed through because of my hard work. But that apart, talent alone doesn’t help anyone survive here, one should have contacts. There is always politics. There are competitors who would purposely quote a lesser amount just to grab a project from you. What is your ultimate goal? I want to create my signature style of music. For example, when you hear a track by Rahman, you immediately know who composed it, even without seeing the credits. Similarly, in future I want people to instantly identify, just by listening to a certain track, that it was composed by Vikas Kurimella. red | april 2015 | 83

Yet she goes about her work with cool composure. Neither her brow creases with impatience nor does her mouth twitch in irritation.

In these days of pomp and show, when principals can be met only on prior appointment and in the air-conditioned comfort of heavily ‘interiored’ ofces, Dr.Kantipudi Vijaya Lakshmi, FounderPrincipal of Vijayam Techno School is certainly a class apart. She is simple, elegant and competent. If the love and respect one earns from students are an indication of the success of a teacher, we get an ample evidence of it in the eyes of the students who look upto her as she walks along the corridors, looking for a relatively quieter place for our tete-a-tete.

The following interaction reveals many amazing traits of this ever-smiling lady, who took giant strides in the eld of education, effecting change in many young lives. Most striking of them is her knowing each and every student by his/her name. Ask her how she manages to do so, she returns with, “Why not? Don’t we remember the names of our family members?” Equally surprising is her ability to recount events, whether they are recent or remote, with the exact dates of their occurrence. She can, with her photographic memory, trace her 25-year-journey to the last detail. But trying even to encapsulate it is sheer audacity on anyone’s part. Hence we capture a few glimpses of the erudite scholar’s life. Excerpts The beginning One of ve children of Mrs.Kantipudi Anasuya and Mr. Janaki Ramaiah, Dr.Vijaya Lakshmi, had a happy childhood. She seemed to have inherited the intellectual genes of her father, who was selected in the rst Service Commission examinations held in 1956. Mr.Ramaiah retired as Deputy Director of Printing Press, Kurnool, after a distinguished career. “I was good in dance and sports, besides academics. Much to the chagrin of my parents, I did not go for MBBS, though I got through the entrance test with a good rank. But I promised them that I would prex ‘Dr’ to my name by earning a Ph.D. Belonging to an orthodox family, I was not allowed to go out of the town and had to make do with the subject, economics, available at the local PG centre. I emerged with ying colours and a gold medal. Later I earned my M.Phil and Doctorate degrees. I worked as a lecturer in Krishna

Devaraya PG Centre for three years. My marriage to Mr. N.V.V.Chowdhary, a builder, brought me to the city of destiny in 1993. To start with, I served as the principal of Ravindra Bharati College and moved to Chaitanya College in the same capacity. Then, came my protracted stint (1995 to 2011) with Vignan Vidyalayam. I saw it born with a mere 28 students. ” Turning Point “I strived hard to build Vignan. I remember how I worked till the night before I went into labour and resumed duty leaving my 29-day-old child in a day care centre. I left Vignan with a proud feeling that I could build a 4000-strong institute of great repute. Then I reconciled to be a full time house engineer,” she recounts. Little did she know that it was not to be. In the meantime, the news that Dr. Vijaya Lakshmi was going for a new venture went viral. A group of her alumni took her by surprise by giving an advertisement in Eenadu newspaper which read- “Congratulations Beloved Madam and all the best for your new venture.” Next day she was ooded with hundreds of inquisitive phone calls. “That sowed the seed of Vijayam,” she says with a happy smile. Miraculous Blessing “I was desperate to get my project blessed by Bhagwan Sri Satya Sai Baba and went to Puttaparthi. By that time Baba, who was indisposed, stopped giving darshan. I stuck to my post at the venue where usually He used to bless His disciples, while all others left. It was nothing short of a miracle as Baba entered Prashatni Nilayam, his car window was lowered, He looked at the school documents I was holding up and said, “Bangaru, Banguntundi”. That was the last physical darshan I had of Baba,” she narrates with an emotion-lled voice.

Progress Sheet The calls she was inundated with on the day the advertisement was published, got translated into 612 admissions, giving Vijayam an incredible launch. Prof. Beela Satyanarayana, former Vice-Chancellor, Andhra University, who inaugurated the school was much impressed and predicted a tremendous success for it. Now it is three-years old and 1800 studentstrong. Following both CBSC and state board curricula, it runs classes from nursery to 10th standard. The school has earned the rare privilege of being the 10th Board examination centre right from its second year. Competition It is a dog-eat-dog contest with schools of various genres mushrooming all around. Of course, that doesn’t perturb the lady who rmly believes in the word of mouth propaganda. “Nearly 75% of my students are either kin or friends of the present or former students. It is our service that speaks for us,” says Dr. Vijaya Lakshmi, a picture of condence. Composition “It is a mini-India here as we have students converging from as many as ten states- Odissa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and North-Eastern states -Assam and Manipur. This is a perfect example of unity in diversity,” says Dr.Vijaya Lakshmi. USP “Love and affection are our USP. The student doesn’t feel that he/she is in a school. It is a place of worship for knowledge.”

Challenge “I have taken the rejects and drop outs of the renowned schools that issue Transfer Certicates to the students who don’t meet their expectations and brought out the best in them. I handled even the children who were written off as ‘gone cases’. Only 10% of students can be rated as average and above average. We have to work hard on the remaining 90% of students who are slow learners. Now people unequivocally say that the child from my school ought to make a mark in whatever eld he/she chooses to be in.” For Holistic Development Being an exponent of Bharat Natyam and Kuchipudi and a favourite disciple of Padma Sri Dr. Shobha Naidu, Dr.Vijaya Lakshmi doesn’t subscribe to ‘all work and no play’. According to her if academics answer for 50% development of a child, the cocurricular activities answer for the rest. She employed full time teachers to train her students in various sport and art streams. “I closely and possessively guard talent of my school and cannot take the risk of employing part-time coaches,” says the candid Principal. Living up to her expectations, her students are always in the forefront in all the record-setting events. “Our school gets invited to take the centre stage, whether it is the main performance or the welcome dance, in all government events in the region.” Record Setter “My students participate/compete in all regional and national events. I was the rst person to hold a 36hour non-stop classical dance recital in which 36 children participated and set the world record. On International Folk Day in 2010, our students broke their own record, putting up a 48-hour nonstop show in which 342 students took part and showcased 18 folk arts. This I took up to propagate the fading folk arts. The letter of appreciation given by former President Dr. Abdul Kalam is my most cherished and prized possession. One of our students won a gold medal in national level Rangoli competition in 2015 and

Still she shifted him to her school which was yet to establish its identity. “I have to lead by example. I attribute all this to my devotion and love for the children. The rigorous training I went through as a dancer and sportsperson (playing basket ball, throw ball and ball badminton) stand me in good stead. I am so passionate about teaching that I can make even social science, the driest of all the subjects, interesting. Students score high marks in it just as they do in mathematics. Even enormous administrative commitments don’t deter me from teaching,” she adds. But here too Dr.Vijaya Lakshmi has taken a unique path, educating both her sons-Sai and Teja in her schools.

he can woo your heart with her intoxicating voice and can awaken the divine being within you as well. In the very next moment, she can make you dance to her tunes. She can beautify you and can transform you into an artiste, by waving her magic wand. She can infuse elegance in you by wrapping you in a six-yard wonder. If you still crave for more, she can give you a sweet treat too. Perhaps, this is what one means by Versatility. Smita Vallurupalli wears one too many a hat. On one Friday evening, we captured varied moods of this dusky beauty as she narrates her story, even as she was getting ready to face the camera. Here are the excerpts that leave anyone wowing her.

EXCERPTS Initiation Jogu Prasad, my mom, says I started singing even before I talked. I was just 3years old when I had my rst stage performance of Doe a Deer. I never thought of making music my profession. Perhaps, my interest in music can be traced to my mother. Though she was never musically trained, she used to sing Lata ji’s songs beautifully. Her Hindi used to be chaste as she was educated in New Delhi. Thanks to her, my Hindi too was perfect, devoid of any south Indian accent, though I was brought up in Vijaywada. I remember she used to sit at the console and correct my pronunciation. Reality Show Frankly speaking I didn’t even know that my audio tape was being sent to ETV for "Padutha Theeyaga". It was apparently compiled and sent by my mother. I was an amateur singer, while the rest of the competitors were trained who came armed with big diaries loaded with notes and songs. I didn’t have even a paper (laughs), I was singing from memory. Yet I made it up to mega nals but could not go further. It is not just about winning, as you might have observed there are instances when the winner fades out, but the second best makes it big. I was popular among public and it was evident

from the hundreds of letters of appreciation and encouragement I got. I was just 15 then, but I had that X-factor in me and was expressive on the stage. Though I couldn’t win, the experience gave me condence that I was not just a bathroom singer. Pop Singing My dad, Prabu Prasad had different dreams for me. He always loved English music and said, “Indian music is just voice and lacks face unlike its western counterpart.” We released my rst album Hai Rabba in 2000. We chose Hindi as there was no market for Telugu pop. My website inbox was ooded with mails. Then, came the demand for Telugu pop song as I am a Telugu girl. So I dubbed the same video. Gemini TV used to play that album every morning and widely popularised it.

Later I moved to Hyderabad and started learning Hindustani classical music from Guru Sidhharth. It was followed by Malladi Brothers, renowned Carnatic exponents. Yet I don’t consider myself a professional classical singer. This exercise was only for vocal training and to gain exibility of tones.

Behind the screen I was into playback singing too and won the Filmfare award for Evaraina chusuntara from the lm Anukokunda oka roju. Remix Rage It was my third album Maska Maska that really stormed the industry. This was a remix of a Telugu song and my mom’s brainchild. It was a blockbuster and retained the number one slot in Music World’s chartbusters for six months, leaving behind hit lm numbers. I also did a Tamil remix with Sony BMG. As the remix culture came to a saturation point, I got back to pop, by launching my trio-lingual self-titled album in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu in 2009. ‘Smita’ is my favourite for its look, output, presentation and the entire package. Bosco & Caesar choreographed it, Sajid-Wajid did the music and Sony produced it. Singing with a Difference Even lack of competition can kill your interest. I started looking for new avenues and ‘Ishana’ was born. Released in 2012, I dedicated it to Isha Foundation and my guru. With a complementing high-quality video, it was my rst spiritual fusion and something very close to my heart. It was followed by “Wake up India’, a solo song album which I dedicated to Narendra Modi ji, motivating

Impediments Nothing comes easy. Of course, I don’t recollect anything as a major hurdle. My career started when I was 15, I denitely missed out on normal childhood. For instance, I couldn’t play Holi as I had recording next day and could not afford to get wet. Such restrictions were for my own good, but one wouldn’t understand that at that age. The second issue I faced was the stigma attached to the lm industry as anyone associated with it were looked down upon. Such reactions used to drain me out mentally. But once you are successful, the tone changes and pour in the pride claims like ‘oh I know her’, ‘she grew up in my house.’


In favour There is always an advantage of being the rst mover because you set the standards and there is nothing really to compare you with. I evolved through trial and error. Acting I wouldn’t even mention it as a part of my career. I didn’t really want to do it. I don’t intend to get into it again, unless I come across a role with a good message. Entrepreneurship My father hails from a family of automobile entrepreneurs and they have been into it for the past three generations in Vijayawada. My mom started her music store- called Sound of Music when she was barely 20. She was the rst one to start a travel agency in united Andhra. Later, we took franchise of Titan in 1986, Eye Plus, Tanishq. Hence business acumen is in my DNA. I started Bubbles and it was the rst high end stand-alone salon in Hyderabad. I was 22 then and all I knew was there were seven-eight services. Today when I look at our menu I see hundreds of services and have a hearty laugh. Making Fit Later we took Bubbles to Vijayawada and along with it I opened a gym Ice (now called Express Fitness). Though it was a complicated business, it picked up pretty fast, thanks to our best equipment and our strong presence in the city.

Designer Shravan Kumar is my rakhi brother and we started it jointly around two years ago. I have a fetish for handlooms. People generally like my sari and dress collection and I end up going shopping to get them a similar pieces. Shravan and I have same taste and for Aalayam we traveled the entire country to get the regional specialities. There are couple of looms which weave exclusively for Aalayam and the designing is done by us. Serving Flavours My recent venture is The Food Lounge (TFL) in Vijayawada. It is an all day dining (continental), coffee shop, dessert lounge and bakery. It’s the rst-of-its-kind in the city. TFL’s Bakery is run in association with Sahil, the best pastry chef in the country and promoter of Concu at Hyderabad. He is now a part of “Sucre Spa” -the bakery section of TFL. Family Support My parents are really supportive and stood by me through thick and thin. My husband Sashank and my 3-year-old daughter are equally understanding.

laying with fabrics is his forte. Designing with threads is his art. Creating fashion is his hobby. When one does all this for four decades, he doesn’t anymore remain just another name in the world of textile, but becomes a brand creator. That is what Harish Kumar has done creating Neeru’s. When the mention is about Indian ethnic wear, reference to this label is just inevitable. He is the Managing Director of the company but he doesn’t work as a passive head. He is involved with its each and every activity, bringing out changes that set new trends. In his inspiring journey, join his wife Neeru Kumar and son Avnish. Together, they make a cozy threesome that runs a highly productive enterprise. Kumars delve on various aspects of the trade and their life in an interview that started at the grand Neerus’s Emporio and ended at their palatial bungalow.

Today it has become a landmark and the crossroads where the store stands is called the Neeru’s junction. There was a time when opening a store of this magnitude on road number 36 was a risk. As it was a task to bring customers to this part of the city. Now you see all the big brands bustling on this road. What is Ms.Neeru’s involvement in Neeru’s? She is very much involved in it from the day one, taking complete care of designing. Presently she looks after the casual wear. We source imported fabrics and style them our way. She gives that perfect cut and t. All our products are result of in-house designing. We strive to provide best of fashion, keeping it affordable for everyone.

I have seen life with and without money. One should respect it.


Do you practise any unique ideology at work? We have around 800 staff. I initiated a practice of prayer at work. Every day at 1.00 pm, all my staff, be it in warehouse, backend, store, wherever they are, we stand up and spend ve minutes and chant ‘ek duhi nirankar, main tere saran mein, mera gunah bakshdo’ (God is one, I am at your mercy. Forgive my follies). Mantra you follow I am a follower of Nirankari. We have taken ‘Oneness’ as our tagline for our workforce. It is a teaching of my guru. Thus, we work as a team helping and complementing each other.

Definition of Luxury When you can live well, eat well, travel well. Hobby Work.. work. Work… Secondly, it is my love for water. I can’t resist when I see a water body. I am crazy about water sports. Are you a foodie? Not at all! You won’t believe, even in parties I look for dal chawal. I eat non veg too and almost tasted every meat. However, at the end of the day, I crave for simple home food. Holidaying would be.. My latest favourites are Miami and Dubai, naturally for their beaches.

What advice do you give to Gen-Y? I am associated with NIFT and India Fashion Forum, where I give lectures regularly with special focus on Indian ethnic wear. This gives me a wonderful opportunity to mingle with youngsters. But I observe the youth is more interested in enjoying life. I advise them to set up right priorities and focus on career. They may take it just as another pep talk, but this is what I learnt from life. One must work dedicatedly and sincerely towards the well-set goals. Be passionate about your work. If you learn to balance time and life, you are sure to succeed. What are your CSR activities? Worldwide, there are millions of Nirankaris, who take up social causes on behalf of Nirankari Mission. I try to do the best in Hyderabad. I work for girls’ education and strive to bring about a change in the society, where gender bias is still prevalent.

IN LIGHTER VEIN To be yourself I am not the partying kind. Whenever I go for some function or casual gathering, I request people not to introduce me as Harish of Neeru’s, but as Harish, an individual. Even now I take pleasure in small pursuits like street shopping and a bit of haggling with them.

Money Matters.. It does, a lot. Very few people realize it. I have seen life with and without it. One should respect it. Destiny drives life…. Many things happened in life, which I never imagined even in my wildest dreams, they made me a believer of destiny. Importance of Employee I always tell my son that without them we are nothing. The two vital elements of Neeru’s are infrastructure and staff, the latter is more important. Thus, we value them and take good care of them. Hyderabad for you I love it. I have visited hundreds of countries, but I nd the city is the best. I can’t stand if somebody talks ill of Hyderabad.

NEERU KUMAR SAYS: “We got into the wedlock in 1979. Our’s is a story of ‘Two States’, where I hail from Delhi and he belongs to Hyderabad. I had a very sweet mother-in-law, who was genuine and humble. It was she, who actually gave a thumbs up to the name Neeru’s. Right from the beginning I was made a part of their venture and I was completely involved in it, from assisting my mother-in-law in her tailoring to supporting my husband in orders and admin work. Along the line, I developed a passion for fashion. Harish's dedication for his work gave me a new direction making me

enthusiastic about my work. This is the best thing I like about him. It won’t be wrong to say ‘He sleeps, eats and drinks Work’! He is an inspiration to many. He is a visionary, who has literally brought a revolution in the eld of Indian Ethnic Wear. He has always been a focused businessman and never craves for the credit. He is very unassuming. I enjoy working with him. He has always been a helping and innovative hand in my production unit. From a small store to Neeru’s which has turned into a popular national brand and now a global label as well, it has been a great journey altogether!

AVNISH ARRIVES “Technically my business card says I am the Director, but there is only one boss, i.e. my father. However, he is a chilled-out boss,” says Avnish, breaking into a hearty laugh. What started as a casual chat to draw a few remarks about his all-powerful father, turns into a full length interview as Avnish, with his irresistible charm, becomes an instant centre of attraction. When did you join the business? I am involved in the business from the age of 15. It was a natural choice for me to pursue as career. Four years ago I completed Masters in Entrepreneurship from London and came back to India only to join Neeru’s and infuse it with new concepts and ideas. What was the first project? Emporio was my rst project and you can say it is the result of my studies in London. The interiors, elevation of the store, the merchandise, the feel, the sprawling look- practically everything about it reminds you of such outlets in London. Is professional training in fashion a must to run business? Fashion is in my blood. I got three professors of fashion right at home- my grandmother, father and mother. I didn’t need to attend any school for formal training. People say I am a mix of three. I learnt about colour combinations and fabric from grandmother. Mom taught me the value of hard work. She is an iron lady and also an expert on cuts and ts. When it comes to passion for work, I try to emulate my Dad. Of course, I can never match up to his level of commitment. Do you have a defined role? My father and I look after operations. We have segregated our roles as per handling merchandise is concerned, while he takes care of saris and

Neeru’s is a very high fashion label and we needed a face that reects the glamour. What is new on Neeru’s shelves? Six months ago we have started a new collection. It is my mom’s own creation, called ‘Signature Neeru Kumar’. The beauty of the products is, one can’t help but fall in love with the fabric which is soft cheese cotton and can be worn around the year. It is dedicated to tunics. The uniqueness reects even in its label- which reads ‘Don’t get addicted to the brand’. What is your approach to business? I am much more aggressive, compared to my father. This year we opened our rst family store in Vizag- which is a ve-storied facility with kids wear and accessories, we have some more ventures in the pipeline. We have our rst franchise store in Bangalore and have plans to open 50 more within a year, besides self-owned stores. At present we have presence only in south i.e. Bangalore, Vijayawada, Vizag and Hyderabad and very soon we will be in Chennai. Later on we will move to east, west, and nally to north. After the Dubai launch, we want to explore and expand in Middle East. A few words about your father Whenever he shakes hand with employees, he says I am passing my positive energy to you. Though my parents are on the wrong side of 50, the moment they step into the ofce, they turn 20. Dad always says- work should be your second name. sk him- ‘How are you?’ Pat comes the reply with a spark in his eyes – “Going strong… any doubt?” Meet Mr.Kolluru Jagannadha Rao, a war veteran, an ace author, an ethical businessman, a philanthropist and above all a great human being. He knows how to keep one engrossed, be it with his interesting saga of World War II or witty anecdotes of his life and business. It is impossible to match up to the energy level of this 92 year-young-man. Age couldn’t dampen his spirit or douse his enthusiasm to adopt the ‘new’. From keyboard to computers he has learned everything which earns him a tag of a mod man. Here is the transcription of an interview of this living legend taken at his heritage store.

Give us a recap of your life. The World War II changed my life. Vizagites panicked assuming that the Japanese are going to land here. During that time I was pursuing B.SC Honours in chemical technology. Andhra University was shifted to Guntur and procuring text books and continuing studies became a difcult proposition. My father the late Mr.K.V.Ratnam, was an eminent advocate and public prosecutor. Unlike the other parents, who kept their children away from war, he advised me to join the forces. “You won’t get a better opportunity to serve the nation,” were his words and there I was, at the age of 19, with the Indian Air force as a cadet. How was your induction to Air Force? After my basic training, they found my eardrums were not strong enough to join the ying squad and appointed me as a ground staff. Thus my dream to be a pilot blew to smithereens. I was all the more heartbroken as a fellow cadet was

selected for the job. Even as I was lamenting my loss, we got the news that the selected cadet died as the plane he was ying crashed. I realized destiny had better plans for me. I was attached to the British Royal Air Force and used to handle radar systems. I worked till I turned 23. Those four years came as a period of great learning. Any other memorable incident? As the war got over, in 1946, I was released from the services. I landed in Madras railway station from where I was supposed to board a train to Vizag. I reached much before the schedule departure of the train. I saw another empty train going to West Bengal which would go via Vizag. I happily boarded it. There was no communication system like today’s telecom, hence I couldn’t inform my folks about this change of plan. When I reached home my people could not believe their eyes that I standing in front of them because the train I was

supposed to board met with a devastating accident and all the passengers in the Waltair bogie were killed. Once again I cheated death. What was your next career path? I was in a mood to celebrate life by taking a month’s holiday, but my father made me join my uncle’s hardware business. At that time there were hardly three or four shops and all hardware products were exported from Germany, England and Japan. After working under his guidance for almost a decade, I gained sufcient knowledge and condence and thought being on my own. In 1956, within 15 days of my son’s birth I opened my hardware store - K. Jagannadha Rao Hardware & Paints. I bought this 500 sq yards land from the Maharani of Gangapur and since then we are here.


How was the growth? I believe in gradual growth and developed the business slowly yet steadily by adding new items. A considerable change in the market took place with the advent of a few Punjabi traders who started manufacturing hardware products of premium quality. This paved the path for Indian-made items. We witnessed a positive growth in the business. Now we deal with hardware, paints, industrial supplies and allied products. Did you face any hassles? Nothing major, though the risk of getting cheated was high here. To deal with it we adopted ‘open delivery through Bank’. The material used to come to the bank instead of us, the bank would verify the genuineness of the consignment. What is your observation of the business trends over the years? Now there is clarity in business dealings. Previously hardware merchants used to sell everything at one place. Now each one deals with specialized items and business is more streamlined. Today’s customers are quite educated, which makes trading much easier. What has been your principle of business? Be honest and give correct guidance. Besides offering professional assistance, one should extend what I call ‘vocational service’. Let me explain, if you have simple headache, instead of prescribing a dozen tests, the doctor should give you an aspirin and it is his professional and vocational duty to do so. Similarly, I have knowledge about the subject and if someone comes to me with a problem, I must try to help instead of misguiding him. Once a lady came to me with a jammed suitcase, I just administered two drops of oil on the locks and it clicked. When we have simple solutions in hand we should not put the customer to unnecessary trouble. What is the best advice your father had given you? He used to say “Never heed my advice because I am your father and you have to follow it. Treat me as your elder brother and discuss it threadbare if you have any doubts about my decision.” No wonder we were more friends than father and son.

Did you have your own dream career? No I didn’t have any. I never planned anything for myself, everything was happening to me and it was all for good. I have no regrets whatsoever. Did you ever feel that like you, your son should have joined the services? No! I needed his services more (bursts into laughter). He worked as an ofcer in Steel Plant for many years, so did his wife. I never pressed him to join me in the business. Soon he realized his father needed his help and joined me. These days I work for a couple of hours in the store. He insists that it’s high time I retired and took rest. What is secret of your health? I am a teetotaler, I don’t smoke either. I never follow any kind of tness regimen like walking or yoga. I just keep my mind clean and hold no ill feelings or grudges against anyone. I strongly advocate mental cleansing to keep your body hale and hearty.

International Club. It was a proud moment for me. Although I have been undertaking various philanthropic works at a personal level, it is only since last three-four years that I have been maintaining a diary which records all the details of the needy whom I am helping. The diary has as many as 30 people from young kids, poor children, destitute women whom I support nancially, be it by bearing the expenses of their education or providing them with means of livelihood like sewing machines, vocational training etc. I have allotted an annual budget of Rs.2 lakh for them. I assure these people that this service won’t stop even after my demise and will be continued by my son. Giving gives me utmost satisfaction.

Tell us about your family. My wife was Venkata Lakshmi, she used to say no ‘Venkata’ only Lakshmi. She is no more. I have two daughters Sujatha and Usha and one son Ratnam and they have given me adorable grandchildren. All of them are well-settled in their lives. What are your hobbies? I wrote two books. I used to play keyboards, but of late I stopped it as its loud noise is straining me. I am a regular newspaper reader. I used to write features for The Hindu and my articles are compiled into a book which the late D.Subba Rao released. What is your definition of holiday? My holidays are in my bedroom. Many people can’t live alone, but I love solitude and am a happy man even in isolation. I just relax. I am an avid cricket fan and stay glued to TV watching cricket matches. You are known for philanthropic activities, could you tell us in detail? I am a Paul Harris recognized member of Rotary club and have been actively involved in various welfare programs. I was the president of Rotary Club in 196465 and undertook a number of welfare activities. It was the only rotary club in Vizag during that time. e ranks 4th among landscape designers and 6th among interior designers in the country. His popularity is evident from the fact, that today in this realm his name has become a brand in itself. With almost two decades of experience, this man is standing tall in the vast market which once threw testing challenges to him. His is one of those rare stories of rags to riches. But he remains untouched by the success. He is still a self-effacing man who is candid enough to accept his inadequacies. Here we have the landscape and interior designer, K. Pradyumna Rao.


What exactly does landscape designing mean? Landscape has six key compositional elements- landform, vertical structures, horizontal structures, vegetation, water and climate. You can say, landscape design is an art of arranging, transforming or altering these elements to make good outdoor space. It can be a yard, garden, road, an urban area, alfresco sitting set-up or lawn. The purpose is both aesthetic and practical enhancement. It is often divided into two major parts hardscape and softscape.

In fact, people were not even aware of it. There was almost an overnight rise of interior designers who stormed the landscape designing arena too. How do you stay in sync with the change? With the growing popularity of interior designing, it became difcult for me to stick only to landscaping. Moreover, to be in this eld one has to depend or tie up with architects. Selecting landscape designers is left to the discretion of the architect. From the beginning I never liked working according to someone’s whims and fancies. So I decided to do a course in interior designing and obtained it from Poonam Interiors, Bangalore in 2006-08. How is your experience as an interior designer? This is a very fast moving eld. Market is ooded with mind-boggling products such as electronic blinds, vinyl ooring, texture work, different types of jaquar lighting, following the leaders of interior designing hubs like Italy, Spain, Scotland, and London. One of the most revolutionary products is automated shading wallpaper. It changes its colour responding to brightness of the lights, timing of the day and even outdoor climate. One would see a hue in the day, another in the night, one in sunny afternoon and a different one on a cloudy morning.


It costs Rs.1,850 per sq ft. I have already used it in Chennai and Bangalore. Ultra modular kitchen is another latest thing which I am doing in great numbers. These kitchens have striking features like hydraulic system, LED lighting, center locking, gas leaking siren etc. and they range between Rs.4 lakh to Rs.35 lakh. What is trending now in this field? Landscape designing is a dynamic eld. It is upgrading every year. In recent times German-made sensor landscaping is the rage. One of the most popular things are

With 16 years of experience I can now proudly say that I have some coveted names in my projects’ list. It includes landscape designing of Bhushan Steel in Orissa, Baramati Ring Road in Maharashtra, a project of Sharad Pawar, Anil Ambani’s Samalkot power project in Kakinada. Last year, I had done the landscaping of area under Gachibowli yover . For any landscape designing one needs to consider a lot of factors and an in-depth knowledge of the area and its characteristics is a must.

What is your USP? Be it a small or a big project, I never compromise on meeting the deadlines. Come what may, I deliver the nal product on, in fact, before time. Faith is the main factor for building business and maintaining it. I ensure that I don’t mislead my clients, thus every minute detail is clearly mentioned in black and white. Working on wallpapers, ooring especially wooden ones, is my forte. A handy tip to the upcoming colleagues! One needs to go for site visits, instead of just suggesting random proposals by taking cues from the web. Suitability

matters. Ensure your plan suits climatic, soil, topology and budgetary conditions. To be in the race, always be unique. Since you will be an entrepreneur, not a job holder, you have to master people management skills as well. Here you have to deal with a labourer as well as a CEO. The eld demands loads of patience, especially when it comes to explaining your proposals to your clients. What are your future plans? I want to go global and work on some international projects. Besides this, I wish to start my KPR Trust and its motto will be to treat Asthma patients naturally. To do so, I want to plant medicinal trees in my rm which cure breathing problems. Instead of taking medicines, the patient just has to spend time in this green zone and the trees will do the needful. By 2017-18 it will come into existence. I also nurse a dream to get into lm direction. I have already started working on a short lm and it will be released this June. As you have reel visions, did you ever think of creating film sets? I had already done landscape designing for a couple of lm sets. But honestly speaking I don’t want to do it again. It is not satisfying, rather disheartening. For one project, I worked continuously for 6-7 days, but the director dismantled it in just two hours, as soon as the scene got over. I am an artist and my creations are art. I feel there is no value for it in the lm industry. What is your dream project? On October 22, 2010, I got an opportunity to work as the landscape designer for Indian Parliament. But since I couldn’t meet the required eligibility, I missed this esteemed project. Till date, I am waiting for the day to get this coveted contract again.

s going to work your worst nightmare? Perhaps your lungs feel so too. Now, you can’t really blame your body for revolting, can you? If it throws fatigue, restlessness and irritation at you to dissuade you from going to work, just accept it without a fight. After all you asked for it by denying your lungs fresh air. Now think about a situation where you are surrounded by plants, feeling as fresh as dew despite putting in 12 hours at work. Even responding to that much hated stinker from your boss won’t seem like that bad a deal. But, how you will find flora in the midst of a concrete jungle?
