amed after the mighty Asian river, Mekong serves cuisines from the six countries that the river ows through – Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, China, Vietnam and Myanmar, along with popular Japanese delicacies. The décor here is modern and Oriental, with most elements sourced from South East Asia. The place has both an indoor and an outdoor seating option. The fish motifs that dot the wall add an element of fun to the whole look of the restaurant. Light music in the background gives a cosy vibe. Coming to food, their Burmese Khowsuey soup is to die for. The avocado and crab meat sushi served with zingy wasabi and pickled ginger is another must try. Dishes like the whole grilled fish in tamarind and sweet chilly sauce, crispy fried lotus stems, Oriental grilled chicken satay and sliced red | september 2016 | 30
chilly fish are some of their signature dishes. To end your meal on a sweet note, you must try their coconut jaggery ice cream. The richness of the coconut milk and the sweetness of palm sugar will make you yearn for more. Those who like to experiment with food, can challenge their taste buds with wasabi ice cream which is made of jackfruit and water chestnut, but that is only if you stand the strong smell of jackfruit. Now you know where to head, if you have a weakness for Pan-Asian food. With classy ambience, well informed staff and prompt service, Mekong is certainly a hot favourite that serves the best food in the neighborhood. With meal for two costing Rs.2,000, I must say that the restaurant will certainly not drill a huge hole in your pocket.

early sixteen years ago Renu Baid started Ruchica's, a boutique in a small room at her own house in Seetammadhara, offering customers with a wide range of saris and dress materials sourced mainly from Kolkata. As the trend of customized outfits picked up, Ruchica's added fabrics and also started selling borders, latkans, patches sourced from Benaras, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Surat. All this while Ruchica's remained a small unit which was working from home, but when demand for her fabrics, saris and custom made out-fits started increasing, Renu thought of expanding her business. So on 14th August, 2014, Renu took Ruchica's to a different level by opening a boutique at Seetammadhara with two member staff and a tailor. With the gaining popularity of the products, Ruchica's shifted to an expanded boutique in a commercial complex at Samppath Vinayak Temple Road in the heart of the city, attracting a wider range of clientele.

‘Ruchica’s specialty is customized products concentrating mainly in saris, ghaghras and their very special cholis. Renu Baid, the owner says, “These days girls from high school and colleges too love to wear saris and they want mainly chiffon ones because it is easy to manage and drape and they can team them up with mirror work, brocade or sequence work cholis. So we have a lot of two-tone bright coloured chiffons to cater to their needs.” Other products that are high on demand are raw silks and jute pieces. “We too have Benarasi saris and material and also Chanderies from Madhya Pradesh.” The cost of saris ranges from Rs.1,000 to Rs.8,000.

garwal’s Images, located near Hotel Greenpark on Waltair Main Road was started in 1994, by Mr. B. K, for whom photography was a passion and not a profession. Over a period of time this studio has developed into a place which offers all the facilities like make-up, picture taking, printing and frame work, everything under one roof. They even provide their clients with outfits and props. The centrally located studio has only women staff to keep women clients at easy as they help clients drape their saris and in applying make-up. While taking a tour around the studio I realized that a lot of wonderful things happen around us all the time, but to be able to capture them in the best possible manner is probably a challenge only a few people like Agarwal can meet. Looking at his creations, we realize how he pays attention to every minute detail. Initially, this studio was only into matrimonial portraits, it was in 2008 that he got into wedding photography. If you want memories to last for a lifetime, you will have only one chance to capture the excitement and the spirit of the day and the right place to go to is Agarwal Images. They charge Rs.1,200 for matrimonial photograph and Rs.300 for passport photograph. This is probably the only studio in town which pays that much attention to passport photography. They believe that even while taking a passport sized one, one should keep the profession of the person in mind. Agarwal says, “Appropriate framing enhances the pictures and it is very important that we must take care of it. The colour and size of the frame should also be selected with a lot of care because a bad frame can totally mar a beautiful picture.”

ord spreads like wildfire in Vizag, so we doubted there were any hidden salon gems we had yet to unearth. Then a friend with rich lustrous hair brought up the name of Manea. Ruby Singh, a college student says, “When I visited this salon I was awestruck by its cleanliness. I went there for hair colouring. The hairstylist there recommended allover highlights- an unappealing idea to me, since my last visit to some other salon in the city left my hair with orange streaks when I wanted burgundy. So I was a little skeptical. After the hairstylist explained his intension to keep the bottom layers of my short, choppy style from looking unnaturally dark, I acquiesced and he carefully added golden tones throughout. The colour itself took 40 minutes and the shampoo came with a particularly indulgent scalp massage. My hair shone with pretty glints of gold and copper, and now I am happy to say that Manea is my little secret.”

on chic means good style. There’s only so much that lotions and potions can do before a red carpet and Bon Chic is the right place to be. The tag of this plush salon and spa is, “Your very own beauty spot.” Located in Siripuram, the salon spread over 1,800 sq.ft. Sukanya Sugathan, a new mother, said, “I had a baby and the dark circles to prove it. Desperate for some pampering, I booked an appointment with Bon Chic, who has a reputation for healing sensitive skin. I told the beautician that I was nursing and she prescribed a facial with newly introduced natural ayurvedic products which are safe enough to eat. She then lulled me to sleep with a 30-minute face massage. As I left I marvelled at the difference. I arrived at the salon tired and drained out, but departed radiant and relaxed. I am going back to this place again for facial and body spa.” This is an ideal place where you can find some peace, not rattled by gossip sessions and cell phone jabbering. The beauticians and hair stylists are well experienced and trained. They are good at their work and also the way they deal with the customers.

Brands used in the salon are Loreal, o3, Oriame, Cheryls and Mac. For ayurvedic services, they use original herbs and the trained beauticians prepare their own ayurvedic formulations mixing up pure herbs. Prices here are very reasonable. Cost of hair cut starts from Rs.280, facial starts from Rs.500 and they offer bridal makeup using MAC products starting from Rs.5000. The people visiting the salon don’t need rose petals thrown into the foot baths. This sleek and cozy salon and spa is a major upgrade from the similarly priced noisy neighbourhood salons. Durga Devi, the founder, says, “We started Bon Chic to empower women. We constantly improve ourselves by learning from our past mistakes. This made us serve our clients best and most importantly we value our client’s money.”

The lady of the house Mrs.Lakshmi is constantly on her toes making innumerable trips to the kitchen, supervising bustling servants and attending to the grandson. She takes time off to flash an apologetic smile and says, “Sorry for not sitting with you, have guests for lunch and a hundred chores on hand.” If mother is so dynamic and multi-tasking, how is the son going to be - is the obvious thought that comes to mind.

Yes, you are almost there. A smart and savvy youth enters the room with flourish and panache matching his mother and almost instantly settles down to an articulate conversation. Though he is not into the business for long, the young Pavan Kumar Potluri, Managing Director of Potluri Constructions seems to have got a good grasp over the business and talks of its various angles with considerable authority and conviction.

Hence, my short stint with a job neither doused my passion Here is the brick by brick account of his for construction nor could it keep me away from its lure. Perhaps that is the successful journey. most natural trajectory to follow. Hurdles crossed There were one too many. When I entered the field in 2011, the construction activity was at its peak in the city and every second person I bumped into, was a builder. Since I was surrounded by formidable and tall rivals, every move, right from the word go, was tough. Despite the much acclaimed Potluri tag, people, looked askance at me because I was barely 24 years old. It is only natural they were apprehensive of leaving their life’s savings in the hands of a green horn like me.
Thorny Path In the first place, getting customers was a task in itself. The quality of work that was going on at that point of time did not impress me much. That is why I made ‘quality’ my USP. I didn’t mind letting my profits suffer but certainly not the product. I kept a strict vigil on the minutest of details. I designed my ats and started construction work in April 2012. Meeting the set-deadline, I handed over the completed ats to the owners in March 2013. Now my building stands as a landmark and I am considered a builder who can give his rivals a run for their money.
Track Record I dealt with 700 to 800 customersthree residential and one commercial venture. I involve myself in the entire process right from the conceptual stage to reaching the product to the customer. My education in finances, marketing and HR came in handy. I know the customers like the back of my hand. Success Mantra Dedication, I sacrificed three precious years of my newly married life. Projects Till now I completed four projects, one of which is commercial and three residential. I have three more are on the anvil. All of them are group housing ventures - Madhurawada consisting of 50 apartments, Mithulapuri -150, and Yendada -25.
Residential Vs Commercial Erecting commercial structures and marketing them is easier as compared to building residential units. In commercial ventures, it is all about creating a prototype and replicating it, which can be done with least stress. In residential sector, a builder has to deal with innumerable customers with varied tastes. I love challenges, hence I am here. In a cluster of houses, we have to make each one distinctive and different from the others. While you find one or two commercial complexes coming up in a locality, you see group housing ventures mushrooming, indicating the cutthroat competition in this particular sector.

Only 40% strong minded and the brand builders like us stayed back struggling to run their businesses. Lack of financial rotation too affected all trades, including the construction. In 2004, a US-based firm grabbed a major stake in Dynamix Dairy of Baramati, but it is a very small firm. The real historic development took place when Groupe Lactalis, the world’s largest dairy company, acquired 100% stake in Titumala Milk Products Pvt. Ltd, the state’s largest private enterprise. The man behind this mega project that brought in a revolutionary change in Indian dairy market is Mr.Battini Nageswara Rao. He, along with four friends, founded the company in1996 and took it to the dizzy heights, expanding it to eight states, running 120 chilling stations and most importantly, providing livelihood for 35,000 direct and indirect employees.

Untouched by the pomp and show that fame and wealth bring along, he can be passed off as an erudite pundit, with a spot of kumkum on his forehead enhancing his radiance.

In a Sunday morning interview, Mr.Rao talks of his extraordinary journey, how he started from the scratch, built the inter-state dairy network and created special niche for himself in various trade sectors. EXCERPTS Why are you venturing into a new arena- real estate? Real estate transactions are not new to me, per se. I have been acquiring properties in various places as my business has its tentacles well penetrated in many states. I started my journey in the world of transport with Lakshmi Ganapathi Lorry Service in 1990 and diversified into
many sectors. Now I am here at Bhimali with Bathini Greenlands & Infra Projects Pvt. Ltd. How do you describe your objective and the launch? Our entry to the real estate world is very smooth because I acquired 40 acres of land with officially approved layout plans and to our great delight, already 40 per cent of the project is marketed. I came here with a very noble objective of providing housing to middle class segment. After food and clothes, shelter is the basic necessity for human beings. Having a house for his family is definitely the dream of every man.
People from middle classes save every possible penny to provide this facility for their children. I am here to help at least some of them to realise their dreams. I have earned enough to keep my family in comfort. So I do not intend to make big bucks on this project. Keeping the margin at 5%, I wish to take the facility to as many people as possible. I am going to play supervisory role, while my son Venkatesh handles the project. The Three Es Exploring, experimenting and expanding have been my motto as I tried my hand in varied and totally unrelated fields. By God’s grace all the enterprises I tried my hand in, yielded rich dividends. Don’t you know- Success succeeds success. Tell us about your journey till now? I hail from Narasarao Pet, a small town near Guntur. Being the eldest son in a family of 12 children, the responsibility of earning came on my shoulders at a very tender age. I joined my father who was in transport business. With sheer hard work and resolve, I worked my way up and oated my own company Lakshmi Ganapathi Lorry Transport in 1990. Later, I oated Mani Financial Company and followed it up with Venkata Tirumala Chit Fund Private Ltd. Eventually, my tryst with dairy began when I started supplying milk to Heritage Dairy. In 1997 there was an unprecedented glut in milk production and marketing the product became tough and even Heritage couldn’t lift our stock. That was when I thought of starting my own dairy and the Tirumala Milk Products Pvt. Ltd came into existence. Then there was nothing that was stopping me. It was quickly followed by Pragathi Milk Products Pvt. Ltd, Bhaktanjaneya Milk Foods Pvt Ltd. and Janakirama Diary Pvt. Ltd. Being in Guntur, no businessman can ever resist the temptation of setting up a cold storage and I established Tirumala Cold Storage Pvt. Ltd. Please tell us about dairy market in which you excelled? Liquid pasteurised milk has always been the mainstay for native dairies for years. As much as 80% revenue used to come
from liquid milk and 20% from the other milk products. But of late, they have realised the importance of value-added products and turned their focus to milk derivatives. This made international brands look at the potential of Indian market. Although dairy was a low-margin business, Tirumala grew rapidly constantly pushing up its profit margins. In the financial year 2013, it reported 21% increase in its turnover garnering Rs.1,424.11 cr. It outpaced even Hatsun Dairy, India’s largest private sector dairy. With great pride, I tell you world famous Danone too tried to acquire Tirumala, but the negotiations did not yield a deal. Ultimately, Groupe Lactalis won the race
students bagged plum jobs. I want to set up more educational institutions to reach help to wider circles. Through Battina Nagamma Charitable Trust, which I established in the name of my mother, I give help and aid to the needy, especially in education and health sector. As the Chairman Narasaraopet Government General Hospital, I gave the 100-bed hospital a facelift and it is being expanded to a 300-bed hospital. Some poignant events in your life Since I came from a very modest background, I understand the troubles and travails of the common man. I never ever dreamt of being in the position I am now. I never advertised nor did I ever alighted a stage giving speeches, yet Chief Minister Mr.Chandrababu Naidu offered me Narasaraopet seat to contest in 2014 elections which I politely refused because politics is not my cup of tea. I consider my walking with four friends on this magnificent success path as the biggest blessing and most significant achievement. In Brief Business through fair means, possible? Corruption is everywhere. Yet, one can survive and succeed through fair means in business, if one resolves to be upright. Ambition Extending help to the middle-income group.
and the deal value, which is the biggest transaction, closed at Rs.1750 cr. Tell us about your CSR activity? I understand the value of education. Though I reached dizzy heights in business, I always regret missing out on education. To ensure that the underprivileged should not suffer the same fate as mine, I established Tirumala Engineering College in Jonnalagadda, where 2,000 students are studying. As many as1,000 of our

Values Material possessions have zero appeal for me. I value action. Sector close to heart Education. Other than work I am on my toes from 6.00am to 10.00 pm. My life revolves round my business and family. Tip to new comers Don’t expect results without hard work.
THE RISING SON For some fathers, allowing their children take the lead role in their business can be a difficult proposition. If they become apprehensive of their initial steps, they also become protective of the children who are stepping into a whole new world without any support of experience. But Mr.Battini Nageswara Rao, the dairy tycoon, says watching his son Venkatesh enter real estate business has been a source of pride. He reposes immense confidence in his son’s capability and calibre. “Why not?” asks he adding, “He is educated and qualified. Hence he is better equipped and stands on a better ground compared to me who came to the field as a mere teenager without a penny in the pocket.” An MBA degree-holder, Venkatesh initially appears a bit shy and self-effacing but he opens up once his project becomes the focus of conversation. With understandable enthusiasm of a newcomer, who is taking his first ever step into world of business, Venkatesh talks of his upcoming real estate project in the city. and engaged my interest. This region is very peaceful and hassle-free. I am confident that tradesmen with fair intentions can transact business without fear and stress here. I find the locals are very good natured and soft spoken. The capital region is becoming crowded and congested. After the split Vizag, has assumed the importance which the city rightly deserves. Are you here on your own accord or is it your father’s wish? Yes, it is my father’s decision to make foray into real estate trade and I too endorsed it. To be frank, I would have
We both can take certain liberties with each other. I know he will go that extra mile to help me and he knows I shall always stand by him. Did you do your homework? What are the features that attract you in this field? I have been studying various aspects of real estate and learning the ropes. I learnt people are on lookout for new designs with modern amenities. I shall strive to provide my customers with everything unique. What are the problems you face? Time management. We can't complete all the tasks we expect to do in a day. preferred to stick to the dairy business. But it was a decision taken by the group. I have every intention of pursuing my dream once I establish in this field. My ambition is to go into manufacturing industry which is related to food products. My wife Sai Suma and my parents-in-law are in education sector. Hence that is also an area of interest for me. I wish to open a school with all modern amenities, You are the only son of a successful entrepreneur, your take? I certainly have an edge over my father, who set out on his journey with empty pockets and a huge family commitment to meet. I know how he struggled to put bits and pieces together to build this business empire. I am lucky to inherit not only his wealth but also the goodwill that he earned. Hence I have a great head start and hope to meet my father’s expectations. Family dynamics always work. There is a greater loyalty.
Education or no education, one can succeed in any field, if he or she is equipped with practical knowledge. However, education smoothens rough edges and adds sheen to one’s persona. That is the reason why I wish to get into education sector and establish schools that can create high quality students and citizens.

The Place The ambience has to be understandably unique as it is the brainchild of Srinivas Babu, who is known for his out of the box concepts and innovative endeavours. Set in equestrian theme, café sports a casual look. Its rustic interiors are applauded for their distinctive looks and aesthetic values. He conceptualized and executed the interiors, with the help of his team. Use of wood and other natural elements gives the interiors a natural aura. The beginning “It all began with Bayfront Horse Club coming up at Sagar Nagar. We thought that it would be nice to have a café near the riding facility where the riders and horse-lovers can sit and share their experiences and exchange ideas. Finding Sagar Nagar where the horse club was located rather far, we started looking for a more viable option. Ushodaya Junction in MVP colony surfaced as the right alternative for two reasons. One- it is more accessible to students and families and two- it lies en route the club.” Name Game Gallop is the most exciting word in the horse world. … The thought of a horse galloping excites people and signifies vibrancy and energy. Hence the name GALLOPS Hurdles Overcome “The location has been rather
inappropriate and this has been the biggest challenge. People who come to Gallops appreciate the place and whatever publicity we get is only through word of mouth. Ironically, despite the fact that it is located next to Spencer’s at Ushodaya Junction, it is not too visible and not prominently projected. Hence it doesn’t catch the eye of the passers-by.” Local Response Both ambience and food have always been greatly appreciated. The guests never fail to come again and have only good words, for the eatery. That is the reason for its survival though it is a wee bit oddly located. On the flip side, many prefer the café for its location as it doesn’t attract unwanted crowds. It is a place for casual eat that fits the budget of all and attracts all genres. It is soon completing three years of successful run.
USP Minced chicken burgers- no other place other fluff it up like we do. It is served as a delicacy in most of the birthday parties held here. Unforgettable Incident.. Students from Andhra University College were so mesmerised by the unconventional interiors that they wanted to know who the designer was. The architecture students were all praise and appreciation for the work. They went around the place for more than an hour asking various questions about the elements of design. This inspired Srinivas Babu to come up with yet another place with unique design elements- Hotel Rockdale near Seven Hills Hospital. Future Plans Many people suggested that a place like this must be in the centre of the city and hence the management has been actively looking for a place to expand its operations to Siripuram and nearby areas. Adding Mexican cuisine to the menu is also being considered. Profile of Clientele Students appreciate the place and cuisine a lot and visit it quite often.
It is a very popular venue for birthday parties for children. People are often seen with their children at dinner time here. Overall, it has a mixed crowd of students and people with classy backgrounds and with a taste for international cuisine.
Gallops survives. Always make sure to locate your place in such a manner that it has good visibility. Visibility plays a keen role in garnering revenue and that is where Gallops is stuck at times and misses substantial revenue. As long as you maintain good quality of product and pricing is reasonable, you are sure to succeed in Vizag.

In 2011, I took the plunge. Italian cuisine was the most obvious choice for me for two reasons. One- it is my favourite and two- I have gained a tremendous insight into it. Why Vizag? There are multiple reasons. First and foremost of them was Vizag, with focus exclusively on Indian food, really lacked options in world cuisines. Since I hail from the place, I enjoy the comfort of hometown. Of course, I knew it would be the toughest market for a unique concept like this, but I am an insatiable explorer and decided to take up the challenge. joke for those who get it and those that don’t, it is a pretty cool name. Hurdles overcome One of the biggest challenges was getting the exotic products imported, since we get them from Italy and other parts of Europe. Importers of these products are available in cities like Mumbai or Bangalore. But no one ships them to Vizag directly. So we used to get material shipped from Mumbai to Hyderabad and have a dedicated person to ship it again to us here. Local Response It was amazing and I never expected this sort of a response. When I opened in 2011, there were hardly any specialty restaurants and ours was the first Italian one in the city. Many people advised me against this move. But unheeded, I went ahead as I had to give it a shot.
USP We serve a huge range of authentic Italian cuisine. A lot of exotic products like imported bacon/ham and also smoked salmon, which you don’t usually find in most places, are on our platter. We are also a cheeky no-nonsense brand and I think our customers love us for that. Unforgettable Incident It was the fifth or sixth day after we opened. We had a full house with people waiting for tables. There were just four of us on the job (To put things in perspective we have 18 people working today): one doing the dishes, one in the kitchen, two taking orders, making the mocktails and serving. It was crazy and chaotic. Yet we managed to pull it off. My legs were numb by the closing time and I couldn’t even walk. I can’t forget that day.

It is calm, offbeat and peacefully ‘bon apetitive.’ The interiors are the reflection of random thoughts of the founders. Sumanth’s friend Ritvik, an artist, filled in a few gaps, making it wholesome and aesthetic. The Beginning “Though we initially started with an idea of opening a coffee shop, somewhere down the line, we realised

Sumanth was into event management and he says, “Of course, I am not inot organising marriage event. I am more into farewells and parties,” He owns a 3D printing start-up named WHOOP. Satya was a partner in Bowl N Roll, passionate about cooking. “Of course not the regular stuff, Continental, Italian and that kind of stuff,” he too adds. Sumanth and Satya used to meet regularly in Bowl and Roll. One day, all of a sudden, they thought they should start a hang out place of their own. They thought two is good but three would be better and Pavan, Satya’s friend came on board to partner with them.
that we have a great cook among us -Satya, who can dish out a wide variety of delicacies. It is only natural, we upgraded to a café. Name Game Simple! The name came from the address, without any spending too much time and thought over it. Hurdles Overcome A lot, but nothing worth mentioning or publishing. We accepted hurdles as an inevitable part of the package one gets while starting anything good.
Local response Simply wonderful! We gave Vizag what it didn’t have and the people reciprocated our favour with their love. USP As mentioned earlier, we gave Vizag what it didn’t have. Our menu and ambience say it all.
Future Plans Our intent is to turn houses into peaceful cafés. We have a few projects in the pipeline and are getting a few decent proposals from investors. But our policy is ‘find the right place and passionate franchisees.’
GRILLED CHICKEN BREAST WITH MUSHROOM SAUCE & BABY VEGETABLES
Tips to New Entrants Work hard. There’s no two ways to it. Keep learning about your business, every day. If you think you got an idea, able to live up to it, then give it a shot.
Chicken Steak with Mashed Potatoes and stir fried exotic vegetables. The chicken is well done and juicy with a generous helping of butter. Season the chicken breast for about 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown and the juices run clear. Writer’s Choice Pastas - People love our mixed sauce pastas. Biryani is a must try. A wide verity of French fries and ice tea they offer. Latin French fries is the show stopper. Wallet-Value It may appear a bit on higher side but our guests get their money’s worth. The best thing is we don’t charge extra taxes, it’s all inclusive in the price list.
“ *
It makes us feel at home with the ambience and food. The must try is their biriyani. I have been a regular guest here for the past four months. - Naveen Chandra, Proprietor, Navratan Estates.
Variety, quality of food, ambience, music- everything about this place is cool. I wish we had this kind of restaurant near our college. I am head over heels in love with this place. - Mr.Rahul, Student, GITAM.

POINT OF VIEW
“People who visit us certainly don’t get drowned into their cell phones as they do in other places. The ambience and features of the place are more engrossing. If you want to spend quality time with people you love or read books in peace from our huge collection of books, it's definitely a must visit. We have a few props, and a photo booth. The photo wall, where we place photographs of some guests and their lovely moments captured in camera.
SAUSAGE STUFFED OMLETTE It consists of chicken sausages, fried egg. The chicken sausages cooked in BBQ sauce along with the fries are topped with lounge made thousand island sauce and a fried egg.

PERCOLATOR
He came, he saw
T
he man behind Percolator is Manudeep Reddy. He has been a coffee addict since his childhood. For this B.Tech engineer from Hyderabad, it was a dream to start a coffee shop overlooking the beach. The desire took a concrete shape, when he visited Vizag. He instantly decided to open a coffee shop on the Beach Road. “I knew that there would be a lot of risks in it. Yet I made this impulsive move to Vizag,” says Manudeep.
The Place If you want to catch up with some sea breeze and banter with your friends over a cup of coffee, the best place to go to is Percolator. This place offers something that none other can- the sea view. You can admire the sun-set, the sunrise and the roar of the waves as you relax on those swinging chairs strategically fixed in the balcony of the cafe. The indoor setting is rather formal with comfortable couches and glass top tables. You can even conduct a business meeting, sipping a latte. The food is a standard fare with a little bit of everything – Indian, Chinese and

Mexican dishes thrown in, so that it can appeal to clientele from all walks of life. Right now it is a trial menu and they are planning to revamp it up soon. They are even inviting opinions and suggestions of the clients for this purpose. The tweaked menu will be up and running very soon. This is probably the only café in the neighbourhood which is open 24X7. There is a sense of lazy elegance about this coffee shop. A very common scene here is to see young people sitting near the glass panels that gives a brilliant view of the sea over a cup of coffee as possible. When you come here you are bound to get into the slow pace — glancing through the glass, enjoying a smoke and reading the newspaper as if time has stopped ticking.
MANUDEEP REDDY
and he...
The Beginning Manudeep says, “Though I started with the intension of setting up a coffee shop, I had to change my course as people started demanding meals. Hence, I crafted the entire menu as per the demands of the customers. Since I am a foodie and a coffee-lover too, I wanted that my coffee shop should have multi cuisine.” Hurdles Overcome “Hurdles are an inevitable part of any new project. Getting a team of trained and disciplined staff is the biggest problem in Vizag. Secondly, I believe only great ingredients can make great food. Hence I always go for the best quality of ingredients, even if I have to pay more. The problem here is that nobody can ensure me of a continuous supply of these ingredients.
Local Response Though it took some time for the people to get into the groove of the coffee shop culture, it is slowly catching up. “We cater to both the local and international taste. We have a lot of foreigners coming here,” says Manudeep.
•MEXICAN RICE
Hot Spot My greatest achievement in Perculator, is that I have always been able to attract different age groups from various socio-economic backgrounds, all kinds of people — both Indians and foreigners. Food for Thought All the dishes in Percolator are an amalgamation of flavours from around the world with the local touch. Since all the fishes are fresh catches, they have a distinct flavour of their own. We do not overcook the stuff and the keep the taste in tact.
POINT OF VIEW I love the place for its view and also the sliding chair and table. Pasta and prawn pizza here are delicious. The cheese used in both the preparations is of superior quality and hence it melts in the mouth. In just a few months time it has become a hot favourite among my friends.- Rana Singh, Student. One must visit the place for its view and the food is pretty decent. I come over here mainly for the sweet dishes like the ‘Death by Chocolate’ and ‘Chocolate Avalanche’. The staffs here are very friendly and well informed. It is a brilliant place to have coffee and watch the sea.Rubina Khan, Architect.
The Mexican rice here is darn addictive. It is light, fluffy and flavourful without being overpowering. The smell of freshly chopped cilantro and lime juice will take you to a different level of bliss. •
Fried Prawn Pizza The prawns are fresh and they are dipped in cornflour batter and then deep fried. Tossed in secret sauces they taste absolutely heavenly. The pizza base is thin and crispy. Writer’s choice Grilled chicken sandwich, Choco nut sandwich, Fried prawn burger, crispy chicken pop’s rice and Dark Chocolate Senses.
HIGHPOINTS Hey Days- Fridays and Saturdays Wallet Value - Meal for two costs Rs.500 to Rs.700 Unique Features The sliding tables and rocking chairs are a unique feature. Most importantly they make sure that the hygiene here is of high order. A wide array of coffees is their specialty. It is open 24 hours. The Gang Percolator has a mixed crowd. Since the view is to die for and everybody loves the place. In the mornings it is mostly the office goers who want to conduct an informal meeting over a cup of coffee. Students also love to bunk college and come here. Evenings are mostly filled with families. Young couples come late in the night to enjoy the sea breeze. It is a hot favourite amongst the travelers who arrive with their rucksack straight from the airport.

The Place Whether you are dieting, detoxing, weight training or generally trying to look after yourself, there is no reason to stop eating out. Being just a little careful when ordering food, can make eating out almost as virtuous as one at home — you just need to know where to go. Tucked away from gluttonous restaurants of the city, ‘Kaloreez’ is the just right place to hang out for health freaks. This particular restaurant puts nutrition on the top of its agenda. Their salads made out of exotic vegetables, lean chicken and low fat cottage cheese and cold- pressed

juices are to die for. Not much to talk about the décor, though it is a small place done up quite aesthetically. But you can easily miss it since it is located at a very non-commercial area which is far away from the madding crowds. The restaurant offers a well-curated healthy menu and is a kind of a shrine for health cuisine. The joint’s philosophy, right from the start, has been to serve people natural food that is minimally processed. It offers all things healthy- from pancakes and brownies made out of ragi, oats dosa and baked poha. Robert says, “We don’t push diet into people, we just serve them healthy alternatives, trying hard not to compromise on the taste. In fact, keeping it tasty and healthy at the same time is the biggest

obert Rejoice, a small town boy from Palasa is the man behind Kaloreez. He came to Visakhapatnam for his higher studies and pursued his B.Tech in Computers and an MBA in International Business. After working with Future Group for three years as a marketing head, he took a plunge into food business. Cooking food and feeding people have always been his passion. The place, in a few months time, has become a neighborhood fixture, serving fresh and healthy cuisine at affordable prices. It may look a bit tiny, but gives the impression of a hill side restaurant, made of wood.
challenge for us. We wanted to showcase our product as something different and hence Kaloreez was born.” Name Game The name was taken from the word calories, basically trying to tell people watch what they eat because a moment on the lips is forever on the hips. To add a little funk the word ‘K’ replaced ‘C’. Journey It has been pretty long. Robert says, “I used to weigh 80kg and was really struggling with my bulges and that was when realisation dawned on me that I should eat healthy and started trying out alternatives and within six months I could knock down 10kg.” His love affair with healthy food started in the year 2009 when he was an engineering student.
He and his friends wanted to try out something out of the box and opened a single-table-restaurant on the Beach Road, offering just five dishes.
RAGI CHOCOLATE BROWNIE The chocolate brownie here is not so sinful since it is made of finger millet (ragi) with very little sugar and a dash of olive oil which is just used for greasing the baking dish. Filled with the goodness of ragi and almond, it is delightfully decadent and rich. The brownie looks elegant and tempting with a little drizzle of chocolate sauce. In spite of being healthy, it satisfies your sweet tooth.
They would wake up at 4.00 am and by 5.00 am they were on the road serving delicacies to the health freaks on morning walks. Eventually Robert, by taking help from his friend Krishna, started full-fledged restaurant Kaloreez in July 2015. Food for Thought In no time the place has stolen the hearts of health freaks. Robert says, “It was on a Friendship Day, a 60-year-old gentleman told me- ‘you are doing a phenomenal job. My blood pressure and sugar levels remained the same even after eating here’ and gave me a big hug.” Their caramel custard made out of protein powder is a big hit. This is the right place to be when you want to eat guilt-free biriyani made out of brown rice. This place has super healthy choices without sacrificing on the flavour.
BROCCOLI SOUP Writer’s Choice The chicken biriyani is made of brown rice and lean meat using very little olive oil and caramel custard made of protein powder. The broccoli soup is an absolute comfort food.

It is a perfect destination for the calorie-conscious. It has a wide spread of menus that appeases your taste buds and Robert is a passionate entrepreneur who is always ready to take suggestions from customers for constant improvement of menu. I would say that this is a one stop destination for healthy and organic food.- K. Sri Harsha, Architect, Fourth Dimension Architecture. As the name suggests, the place is full of low calorie dishes for the fitness-conscious people. Most importantly, the place is peaceful and cozy since it is not located in the heart of the city. The staff here are welcoming and warm. - Deepa Deval, Fitness Consultant.
Unique Features Custom-made food for the health freaks. Kaloreez is what it is today because of the hard work that Robert has put in starting with sourcing the ingredients to preparing the food. Though he has a team of trained chefs, he keeps an eagle eye on kitchen happenings - starting from the ingredients, the calorie count to the taste.” The Gang The people visiting the place are mostly doctors, medical students and gym owners. “The fact is nowadays everybody wants to eat healthy, yet they don’t want to compromise on the taste. The Place Done in pure white, Elepe Patisserie is a class apart from the other hangouts of the city. “Having worked in star hotels both at home and abroad, I simply cannot cut corners either in the ambience or in the products. I designed the display counters with great care and got them made in Bangalore. The manufacturer said it was the first time that he had ever crafted such unique pieces,” recalls Ananda. He did succeed in recreating the French aura here. The place offers
nanda Johnson leaves you rather confused. His knowledge and expertise in continental cuisine, especially in baking field and heavily accented Telugu no way give him away as an Andhraite that he is. This British citizen with dual citizenship is quintessentially a Vizagite and he keeps hoping in and out. Leaving his college studies mid way, Ananda joined Food Craft Institute to formalise his culinary skills, which he honed from the childhood. His career took impressive turns and twists. He started his career with local Taj Hotel and later trotted the entire globe with Peninsular & Oriental Cruises for nine years. After a successful stint with London’s famous Lanesborough Hotel, this chef with 25 years of experience and many international awards and rewards, set up Elepe Patisserie here. “In our field generally a chef specialities in one field either baking or decorating or in dessert making. But I am an all rounder and can take care of everything. Making macarons is my forte. It is only natural I want our people to get a taste of my acumen,” says he, with justified pride. a comfortable sitting for at least 20 people at a time. The Beginning The youngest born in the family of six, Ananda was inspired by his uncle, who served as a butler in a star hotel in Rajahmundry. However, his sister shouldered the family responsibility after the father’s death and taught him the values of life and relationships. That explaina why he opened his first bakery here. Surprisingly, it was his French boss at Belle Epoque Patisserie who encouraged and guided him in this endeavour. Name Game Elepi is my surname and Patisserie is my love for the French language. Hurdles Overcome There are too many to narrate. Getting
the right place for our factory was a challenge. I knocked at innumerable doors for the purpose and had to settle down to open it in our own property in Lawsons Bay Colony. There was an inordinate delay in getting the display counters from Bangalore due to which the inauguration of the hangout got delayed. Worst of all is getting skilled workers, which is next to impossible. Hence only two of us (my classmate Rufas and I) have been running the joint. My nephew manages it. Local Response “It is quite warm. In fact, at this point we cannot even handle it if there is overwhelming response as we are woefully understaffed. That is the reason why we don’t go for aggressive advertisements. Moreover, I am very confident that Vizagites have to turn to us because we serve the fare which is not available anywhere in the city, even in the local star hotels.
USP We use freshly-baked bread for sandwiches. Our eclairs with a wide range of flavours are our singular feature. Generally, people make éclairs with chocolate flavour. This is a craft I picked up from France. Our range of desserts is very huge.
MACARONS
Unforgettable Incident The very inaugural day is the most unforgettable one for me as three chefs who were supposed to join us from Chennai could not reach the city on time. So we were left high and dry. Those three days we worked round the clock to keep the show going. Future Plans I want to open an outlet in MVP. Many hotels approached me for a tie-up. I am yet to decide. Added Attractions I have a lot of innovative ideas as far as the frills like a book case and photo gallery are concerned. I am unable to execute them because of the limited space.

The Place During my frequent visits to Bangalore, I used to be amazed by those small food spots and garage bakeries. Little did I know that one day I would be opening one such outlet. It started as a bakery under the tree, with a complete in-house production unit. Though the tree is no more because of the onslaught of the cyclone Hud Hud, my passion lived on. Hurdles Overcome Everything is a chain reaction of something you did or did not do. Yes, I learnt how not to blindly trust people; how to be creative; how not to stop from getting what I want; how to ignore senseless remarks; how to stop repeating mistakes; how to get up even when the world tries to pull you down every day and finally never to stop dreaming big. REVIEW
K
haan Saab with an inviting tag line ‘Be the Royal Guest’ is a tribute to the rich cuisine that was normally served in 'Durbar' of the Emperors of the North West Frontier which inuenced the Mughal Cuisine to a great extent. Their restaurants boast of very ethnic Indian food, traditional and some even recreated and presented in their original form. This could very well be considered as their USP. Their newest branch at Gachibowli, too, is no exception. Spread over 4000 sq.ft, this 120seater, promises its guests a feast. The menu is carefully crafted and a wide array of delectable spread including succulent kebabs from the region of Samarkand, Lucknowi Kakori and Chingari Murgh from Punjab. These mouthwatering dishes could be considered the star delicacies on the menu. It also takes care of all the vegetarian patrons by offering them the best
array of carefully selected greens and vegetables cooked to perfection. Owned by Ram Prasad and Sarat Varma, Khaan Saab now has four branches – 2 in Hyderabad, and one in Pune and one in Vijayawada. The beautiful ambience and warm service are an add-on to the already exquisite menu and it definitely is one of its kinds in the entire city.

f you’ve driven past Road no 36 in the last one month, there is no way you have not noticed the extravagant VanLavino. Having opened its door to the city on Aug 10, the eatery has already etched out a niche audience for all that they have to offer. At the cafe and patisserie, they have food inspired from international favourites, desserts including Creme Brûlées, cheesecakes and gateaux. Good coffees and tranquil teas, some sweet and perfect shakes and fresh juices, live counters for crepes and wafes and a lot more. Last but not the least, they have an assortment of patisserie items like breads, dry cakes, cookies and biscotti that are

continually changed with new fillings and avours. The decor of the outlet is soulful, inspired to bring out the true essence and love for food. It is a lavish gold and black with dessert displays and a couple of live counters on the ground oor, and a Paris inspired artwork on the mezzanine oor with high seating to create a young vibe. Their USP is their Indian touch that has been infused into everything they create. From their tangy butter rice palella, the lemon butter fish in the main course to the Dolce De Leches Choux Buns and Raspberry Tarts in desserts – they’re a must try!
This small and cosy space which can house nearly 50 people on two oors, believes that they can make any dessert their guests would like to try... Albeit they might take some time to get it just right! Promising a warm, soulful and welcoming atmosphere, VanLavino is here to cater to everyone with a sweet tooth.

zira- a name derived from Sanskrit, means the purest form of a diamond. The place certainly lives up to its name in every sense. Like many great success stories, this too began from humble origin. The brand is the baby of Arun and Kapil Bulchand. It branched out two decades ago from ‘Bulchand’, the original, serving clients since 1933. Through single-minded focus on customer satisfaction, Azira has become a household name in the city, gaining popularity for the purity of its ornaments, wide choice of designs and consistent customer delight. It is now an Elite Diamond stop for connoisseurs.

detail has been closely scrutinized.
This season, we are concentrating on Diet Jewellery, where each product shall be a master piece at an unbelievable price. The current trends are earrings, cocktail rings and Solitaire pendants.
How do you cope with competition? Competition is healthy – and is the only way to improve our performance. If you are the only one in the market, where is the scope of learning and striving to make it better than what is available? Hyderabad as a market is huge and hence, we truly believe that there is room for all. But, having said that, the only fear of competition arises when copies are made! People should all work on original designs - that is where the creativity comes into play. Making copies lowers the standards and ends up making the market a little messy.
What is the inspiration behind your latest collection? Mother Earth has much to give and teach us. There are endless things that inspire. How much detailing has gone into it? Quite a lot. This is the peak time of the year and hence we have tried not to leave any stone unturned- from the design selection to the price tag – each
KAPIL How competitive are your prices? A client doesn’t have a problem if he/she knows that what they are paying for is value for their money. (laughs) But on a serious note, I hope to do better than before and reach out to newer people. Tell us more about the detailing that goes into each piece… It is quite a lot. From the crude alloy to the finish – everything has a detail. Whether it is the metal or the stone... What procedure do you follow? The main focus is to have happy clients; hence it all revolves round them. A one-to-one description from a client to the desired outcome- we take care of it all personally.

We take care of the detailing that includes the value of the material, too. This way importance is not only given to the look but also to the material used. What is the inspiration behind it? red | september 2016 | 40
Close to 200-300 hours of workmanship goes into each piece that we create. Another very important criterion of designing jewellery is to ensure that it can be retained for generations. Hence each aspect- from the polish, value to quality of gemstones- is scrutinized by our experts and their teams. What are the latest trends? We are looking at designing intricate, low budget jewellery for the working women and gift purposes which is in vogue. We are waiting for this wedding season to get over. How do you cope with competition? This might sound cliché but, we truly believe we’re our own competitors. Mangatrai has built a brand over the years and thankfully, our clients repose a lot of trust in us – which is what we need to retain. We shall strive to do so.
How competitive are your prices? Our prices are reasonable. We charge our clients the lowest gold and diamond rate when compared to what is available in the market. You always look for value for money and that is what we offer. What are your expectations from this wedding and festive season? It looks positive and hence the expectation is high. We hope for the best for our industry. What's the procedure you follow? Our visual merchandising really helps. You get what you see. So if we have someone who walks in and likes a piece, then that is taken care of, there and then. But if a client has something in her mind, we design it according to it- put it on paper and help them understand the details. It is our duty to match their budget and quality. This is the procedure we follow.

What keeps you going? Everyone has their own motivational factors and in my case, a lot of external factors motivate me like my family, friends, but above all, I think the true motivation comes from within. Any Bollywood plans? I guess, in this industry, most roads do lead there. That is definitely where I want to reach eventually. You will get to hear from me soon on this topic.
How was the journey? It has been beautiful so far but this is only the beginning. There is so much more to learn, explore and achieve. But yes, it has been wonderful and smooth till now.
Tell us about your current projects. Currently, I am working on two projects Krishna Vamsi’s Nakshatram, an action entertainer in which I have a very interesting role to play and another movie with director Sathya and hero Manoj Manchu in which I play a girl next door from Guntur, the story is a romantic comedy.
THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO LEARN, EXPLORE AND ACHIEVE.
Describe life before and after Kanche. I think, at the person level, life is the same. But after the movie, there is definitely a lot more adulation, respect and love came my way and it is rather overwhelming. People now recognize me as Sita garu, the character I played and that is a great feeling and it gives me immense contentment. How did you react to the National award? I was super thrilled with the national award. Truly, I felt blessed and special to have been a part of the film which received such copious accolades. It was with a lot of hard work and passion that this film was made and it all paid off.
“
IT HAS BEEN BEAUTIFUL SO FAR, BUT THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
How did Kanche happen? I auditioned for Gabbar is Back, which is by Krish - the same director as that of Kanche. He noted my acting potential and offered me the movie Kanche instead. It was the best debut that could have happened to me and hence it remains extremely special and very close to my heart.
Let's talk about how she entered the magical world of movies... Life has its own ways of unfolding and everything eventually happens just the way you want them to, at least for some people. I just followed my heart and did whatever I thought was right. I was studying Law in Pune and it was during my college days that I realised that I wasn’t satisfied with what I was doing. That was when quite a few modelling assignments came my way and I took those up as a part time option. And I think movies were always meant to happen for me. The first step was the beauty pageants where I was selected as a wild card entry many times, after which modelling followed. After making a place for myself in the modelling world, I went for acting as it is the natural course. I wanted to establish myself in the industry. Fortunately, that was how it all happened.
What is it like to share screen space with Nagarjuna? We haven’t started shooting yet, but I am looking forward to it.
Tell us more about your fitness regimen. I don’t follow any strict regimen to keep myself fit. I try to go to the gym regularly, dance (Kathak or any other dance form) when I can manage and go for kick-boxing occasionally. Fitness also has a lot to do with one’s lifestyle and eating habit. It is a package deal.
We heard that you have taken training in kick-boxing and martial arts? How has that helped you with your fitness? I trained in martial arts as a kid for many years when I was in school, and I try to do kick-boxing once in a while as a part of my workout. In terms of fitness, kick-boxing and martial arts help improve exibility, strength, focus and stamina – and that is why I have made it a part of my workout regimen.
What are the things you look at, before signing a project? There are a lot of things that play a important part before signing a film like the script, the role, the people associated with the film. But I am a person who believes that the ‘yes’ should come from within. So, eventually it comes down to the gut feeling.
What, according to you, is the most attractive thing in a man? Honesty and integrity are the most attractive things. This applies to all human beings, not just men.
What do you consider as your greatest achievement? My journey has just started, so the greatest achievement hasn’t come yet! I shall definitely let you know when I get there and when I feel I really achieved something big!
What is your idea of happiness? Life is unpredictable hence for me perfect happiness is to live each moment to its fullest!
How are you managing to work in two movies simultaneously? Everything in life is a learning experience, isn’t it? (smiles) Undoubtedly, it is a bit tough because it is two completely opposite characters I am playing. But it is turning out to be a fun and exciting process.
How is the glamorous Pragya managing to play a badass cop? What kind of homework has gone into it? To be honest, the homework is still going on, mostly because it is not just a badass cop that I’m playing in the film - the character has many different shades. But it is interesting to do such different genres and I am trying my best to mould myself into the role.

y drawing room is currently piled high with souvenirs from Thailand. I am someone who has a souvenir from every place that I travel to. In fact, my memory-sakes and the books that I bring back from every place hold the key to my latest travel. A friend, once, said that there was no need to travel to places after all the reading and researching that I do, but this has been my childhood hobby and I have learnt it from my father- read, research and travel, though it is always not in that order. This time I felt the strong need to do a large amount of reading to understand Bangkok’s sights, sounds and complexities. And once I started, I felt like Alice plummeting down a rabbit hole of information.

The dark, winding mazes of endless stalls can be overwhelming, but it is a must see. So if you are looking at some serious and cheap shopping, then night markets are the places to go. Most of them are well organized with a plethora of walk up-friendly bars and a few extremely energetic live bands, setting a casual tone to the place.
Bangkok has the biggest and arguably, the best market across South East Asia. While swimming through a sea of crowds, which are majorly tourists, can be tiring during the day because of the heat, it is better to enjoy the energy and buzz of the night markets. It is only after dark, the food, drink and live music come to life making you sway and tap your feet with the rhythm of the city.
NIGHT MARKETS
You must try the ‘Panang Gai’. It is a chicken dish made of red curry paste and is doused with coconut cream. The dish is then served with finely chopped kaffir lime leaves sprinkled on top. The dish has such dynamic flavours that the taste still lingers in my mouth. Another dish that you must try is ‘Gai Pad Met Maung’. It is a simple chicken dish where the chicken is seared in a hot greased wok along with onions, dried chillies and crunchy cashew nuts. The specialty of most of the dishes here is that they are cooked in oyster and fish sauce and they go well with rice.

Feb 19 – Mar 20 At work and in finances, you will receive a lot of benefits, but not for free. If you are the boss, try not to load subordinates with too much work. If you are an employee, give yourself a break. But don’t while away your time and neglect opportunities and resources. Listen to your heart and stay close to your loved ones. Everything will work out to your favour, as long as you don’t doubt your abilities and most importantly, your own desires.
