PUBLISHER’S NOTE
My mission is to offer infotainment that inspires and motivates our readers, encouraging them to follow their passions and reach new horizons. Hence the success stories of big achievers have always been an integral and imperative part of the magazine we bring you month after month. This time about, we talked of the Managing Director of Eisai Knowledge Centre, a Japanese pharma major’s Vizag unit that is adding discernible value to the region besides producing world class medicines. Mr. Sanjit Singh Lamba has created a state-of-the art facility here that has been bagging prestigious awards. Hailing from an endowed and artistic family has its own advantages and disadvantages. It certainly gives a well-laid and ready stage to perform. But the artiste has to be as good as if not better than his forefathers. That is the additional challenge actor Naga Chaitanya has before him. Over and above, he faces a formidable rival in his own father, the evergreen Nagarjuna, who appears to be growing younger by the day. Our cover boy, a sporting Chay, shares his experiences on the eve of Thadaka release. The Guinness World Record holder Uma Chigurupati has been taking giant strides in many fields. Plastic Surgeon Dr. Anjali Saple transforms the very lives of patients with her sheer dexterity. Turn to our Eve segment to learn more about them. Recession and inflation? Hard to believe that these phenomena exist when you see the blooming markets. Everyday there is a new high-end mall, a sophisticated coffee shop or a glittering gold shop that gets opened in both the major cities of our state. We bring the vivid glimpses of those gala openings graced by none other than the glitterati and stars of the film world. We reviewed the new entrants like athiHOYA and Barista in Vizag and also the renowned brands like Sri Krishna Jewellers and Ksheeraawali Jewels in Hyderabad to find out what is, both literally and figuratively, in store for us. Rain or shine, red celebrates all the seasons with the same zest and zeal. Hence a warm welcome to hot summer! We take our readers on a journey through its sights, scents and savours. For the sake of those who cannot bear the heat and dust, we have suggested chilly hills where they can take refuge, in our Retreat segment. Of course, our Cuisine talks of the freezing delicacies that help us beat the heat. These are only a few highlights I touched besides the other fare that is interesting enough for you to quickly reach for this month’s red. Happy reading!

There is a corner too selling suiting and shirting. The sprawling 3rd floor has a huge collection of kids wear. From newborn to early teens, the assortment is huge. It divides the collection into party, casual and ethnic wear. Thus it flaunts lehenga, salwars suits, frocks, etc. for girls while boys can have a good range of kurtas, sherwanis, to casual Tees, etc. The top floor is dedicated to home furnishing. Bed spreads, bed sheets, curtains, cushion covers and towels; one has plenty of options to choose from. The products are reasonably priced. There are trial rooms to get your perfect fit. A lift inside connects the floors. One can visit this store between 10.00 am and 9.00 pm. Parking on busy days might be a challenge. 1

COFFEE TIME
T
here’s nothing better than a hot cup of coffee to kickstart the day and nothing energizes you like a coffee at Barista Lavazza. This is, perhaps, why just a month-old city’s first Barista outlet has already become a favourite jaunt for many coffee-lovers. Spread over an area of 2,000 sft. at Lawson’s Bay Colony, its interior gives quite an airy feel. It is divided into two different zones - non-smoking (AC) and smoking, with each having a seating capacity of 30. They are Wi-Fi connected. Besides channel music going on in the background, there are LCD televisions to entertain the guests. The Barista Lavazza chain of Espresso bars delivers a truly Italian coffee experience in warm, friendly and relaxed environment. Using 100% Arabian beans, the menu offers both hot and cold coffees in an array of options. But do try the Vivacious Spicy Caffe or the Posh Irish Caffe. You can spot some tea, coolers and mocktails (milk and soda based) too on the menu. The dedicated seasonal special drinks are worth a try. Tea lovers; the Hot Ginger Honey tea is just made for you. To satiate your hunger pangs or to relish some add-ons, there are some solids too. Non-vegetarians try the Smoked Chicken Sandwich or the Egg Crema Tramezzina. Veggies, the Cheese Spinachy Corn can give you that aah feeling. There are some pastries, brownies, cakes and muffins as desserts. The uniqueness of Barista is that it keeps bringing some changes in the menu every six months, thus the winter menu differs from the summer one. Open from 9.00 am to 11.00 pm, this place can be your perfect hangout place. Parking facility is fairly good!

CLASSY COLLECTION

L
ocated in the heart of Jubilee Hills and spread over an area of 2,500 sft., this jewellery store sets itself on a different level in every aspect - from interiors to the collection they house. The interiors are very classy in shades of grey and with neatly segregated section for various kinds of jewellery. The mannequins, made to order specially for the store, are attractive. The pentagon shaped white cubicles (for display of sets) make the neckpieces look very attractive. The store has everyday jewellery to elaborate wedding sets and adornments, their forte being exclusive wedding diamond, kundan, pacchi, uncut diamonds, temple jewellery, vaddanams and diamond fusion with uncuts, rubies and emeralds. The price range is from Rs. 25,000 to a whopping Rs. 60 lakh. All the diamond jewellery available at Ksheeraawali is IGI (International Gemological Institution) certified and it also has a wide range of diamonds in princess setting. The USP of this place is undoubtedly the high quality of product and the comparatively lower prices and not to forget great designs; it has limited yet the best collection in each section. If the wedding kundan sets take you back to the Jodha - Akbar era, the diamond sets drive you down to the Victorian era. Not to miss are the adornments with changeable and detachable stones which can be used for various purposes depending on the occasion. It is already having a section dedicated to silver which would be coming up soon.

VEG AT ITS BEST
R
otis is the new talk of town and you will always find this place brimming with people. In the afternoon, this is a hot spot for the young IT professionals and in the evening, for the elite family crowd. What sets this place apart from the other restaurants is the wide array of choices available for the customers. It serves a la carte as well as buffet, spoiling the customers with more choice and is a perfect destination for an upmarket evening chaat. The restaurant is very strategically located in the heart of the crazy hi-tech city which has the maximum number of offices and also in the proximity of Jubilee Hills and Gachibowli. Rotis, spread over an area of approximately 5,000 sft., can easily accommodate 105 people at a time and also has two separate sections for group bookings or private parties. They probably took the name too seriously and belted out almost 50 varieties of rotis to please your taste buds, some of which include Onion Roti, Mirchi Roti, Kheema, Veg. Naan, Malabar Paratha and Amritsari Kulcha. The restaurant also serves Indian cuisine that is complemented with Oriental, Mexican and Continental and a special evening snacks menu including mocktails, pizza, sandwiches and chaat. The chef’s recommendations are Buttered Cauliflower, Flautas, Paneer Kurchan, Corn Tamatar Bharta, Bangaladumpa Pulusu, Mushroom Enchiladas, and the list just goes on. The interiors of the restaurant are in the shades of brown giving it a retro modern look with a wall highlighting the rolling pin and symbolizing Rotis now this is what we call a good blend of creativity and food! The restaurant also provides takeaway parcel service, home delivery and outdoor catering and is all set to introduce live music to make your dining experience a memorable one.

V I Z A G GANTA’S GAME It appears Union Minister Purandeswari and State Minister Ganta Srinivas Rao are at loggerheads with the former opposing the proposed merger of Bhimili and Anakapalli civic bodies with GVMC and the latter supporting it. Can Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy bring a truce between the ‘warring’ duo? The row doesn’t seem to end here. It is also said that the irked Ganta has been urging the erstwhile PRP leaders not to toe Purandeswari’s line, stating that the region’s MLAs must be with the state minister rather than hobnobbing with the Union minister. It is learnt that he is dissuading them even from inviting her for the events in the region.
WHERE ARE THE REPORTS? The richest MLA of the region Kanna Babu once again hit the headlines. ACB “officials raided his house in Yellamanchili. Not so long ago the sleuths conducted search operations on the same house and seized some documents. The raids, it is said, are the offshoot of the complaints by TDP leaders that the leader was in the possession of assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. What puzzles the complainants till today is that the usual practice of announcing the results after the raids was not followed in his case. Is there any godfather behind hushing up the matter?
HYPERACTIVE TSR He endeared himself to the people of the region with his charitable and philanthropic activities. Time and again T. Subbarami Reddy has proved that he is dedicated to the cause of Vizag region’s development. He even started spending three days a week in the city. He won the hearts of slum dwellers by serving them through mobile clinics, medical and eye camps. He spends substantial funds to supply medicines. He has hogged the headlines with his Ugadi Puraskarams in the ‘cultural capital’. Besides establishing Dr.TSR Kreeda Peetham, he has also promoted the beach volleyball tourneys. Impressed by all these activities, local MLAs, stepping out of Purandeswari’s camp, are vowing to stand by him. His contesting for MP seat from here looks almost certain.
MOVE OVER! MALLA IS HERE The most popular and ever-smiling public visage in the region’s political and social events, appears to be that of Malla Vijay Prasad. It is no new phenomenon that none of the political or social happening is complete without this charming young leader taking the centre stage. But it was noticed at the recent Pavitra audio launch, he was the only politician to be invited. One need not look too far for the reasons of Malla being the hot favourite. Though he has his fingers successfully in many pies like politics, business and films, he emerges spotless and as the most noncontroversial person.
TRADE MARK POLITICS POWERPUFF GIRL POONAM Speak of education, a mention of her is inevitable. While on one hand she sets new trends in primary education with her groundbreaking concepts, on the other, she has become indispensable in Young Indians - CII with her dynamism and charisma. She is none other than the vibrant Poonam Shah. Impeccable presentation, complete mastery over languages and unrivaled leadership quality got her elected twice as the chairperson of YI and her success in this role is unquestionable. It is this stature of her that has left the members of YI perplexed as to who can take over as her successor matching her persona.
“Get a business tycoon, make your political hold strong” seems to be the new age mantra of political parties these days. It is already known that major political parties, besides the merchant community, have been after Mavuri Venkata Ramana, CMD, CMR group to join politics. Now it is the turn of Mr. Prabhu Kishore, CMD, Varun Group to face a similar pressure. Political parties are eager to have him in their fold. This business guru had created new records with his vast Varun Empire and with the latest addition, the Novotel Hotel, he has established himself as the unbeatable merchant of the region. Political parties think he would be the best bet to win. However, the reaction from Mr. Kishore is yet to arrive.
LOW SHOW Miss Vizag 2009, Navy Queen 2010 (Eastern Naval Command), Miss Itimes Digital Diva, Femina Miss Talented, Pond’s Femina Miss India Bangalore 2013 winner and the highest of all the crown of Pond's Femina Miss India 2013 1st runner-up, Sobhita Dhulipala! You rock. Hailing from the city of destiny, she certainly shaped her destiny in the glamour world. Recently Hyderabad gave this queen a very hearty welcome literally unrolling a red carpet for her. There were a number of proposals from the movies and there are also talks of her being paired with one of the Manchu brothers. However, the city to which she brought international fame, i.e. Vizag, has been slack in clapping for her. Come on Vizag, it’s time to get out of that sleepy mode and greet our own home-grown heroes.

AJAY, THE CREATOR Creativity is not every one’s forte! Only a few can master it and just a handful can rise to fame with it. It’s all about one’s Creative Plus! By now you must have known about whom we are talking. Ajay Agarwal is the man behind the city’s glamour scene. A major share of credit to introduce the otherwise laidback city to the fashion world, which till a few years ago was dependant only on TV or Hyderabad for fashion sense, goes to him. With his event management company, Ajay has handled and organized plenty of such events successfully. His organizing and managing skills have brought him such repute that even sponsors are eagerly awaiting his next move. There is no stopping him, as the man is gearing up to host Miss Vizag 2013. Sky is the limit!
WANNABES MAKER They rule the silver screen, win many hearts, turn idols for hundreds; but a lot of toiling goes behind making them and of course the maker generally goes unnoticed! Such an unsung hero who shapes the reel heroes is Satyanand, our city’s very own guru of the movie world. If news is to be believed, his institute is witnessing quite a lot of wannabes thronging to get trained under him! What makes the news interesting is that majority of them are not from small towns or remote interiors, they are either scions of political bigwigs, superstars or businessmen. Known for his strict rules, discipline and clear guidance, let’s see how many real stars will emerge out of his portals.
GALS FARE WELL
FLEA TO SWARM AGAIN Beach, open air venue, delectable food and drinks, interesting fun games, colourful stalls and thumping beats - they were all there; it was not a scene from Goa but very much in Vizag. The event was the first Flea market at Palm Beach organized by BaSSment. The three-day (or night) event created much hype and drew a lot of crowds. Since an event of such nature happened for the first time in the city, the effect wasn’t as high as it was expected. The organizers might have expected it and have accepted it. Good news is that Vizagites are going to experience the fun of Flea, that too not just once, but perhaps every month. After all practice makes one perfect! Keep yourself free!!!
A MISUSED PLATFORM Confession boxes are generally seen at churches. But the concept of course in a different format, seems to have entered the precincts of educational institutions. A very popular educational institution has started confession pages with a good purpose of discussing unanswered college problems and students’ feedback. But they seem to have turned into a different platform with students expressing their latest escapades, sharing tips on how to bunk classes, caste politics and personal rivalries and also as a portal to sell and buy second hand handsets and laptops, defeating the very purpose. A confession even led to a gang war which resulted in the suspension of 50 students.

The lead pair of Aarya 2 was in the city. While Bunny, the brand ambassador for Joy Alukkas was seen at the showroom, Kajal came to open a new mall athiHOYA. However, there was a vast difference in how the local fans responded to their visits. While there was a motley crowd of 10, 000 to cheer Allu Arjun, there were a whopping 35,000 who thronged the venue Kajal was gracing. While hefty sums and chartered flights are part of the deals extended to the heroes, the gals get only peanuts. But going by the mass hysteria the girls are whipping up, businessmen appear to be having second thoughts about calling the macho men. They may go for glam dolls who don’t drive such huge holes in their pockets.

SRINIVAS, ENCORE! Though not consecutively, D. Srinivas is going to do a hat-trick and may create history. The High Command is likely to appoint him as the PCC chief for the third time in the rejig of the state unit, asking Botsa to continue in the Cabinet. It may be recalled that Cong came to power in the state in the 2004 and 2009 elections when DS was PCC chief. He may take over very soon. With his community being strong in the party, he is expected to enjoy solid support from Tourism Minister Chiranjeevi and others. His hailing from Telangana is an added advantage. So encore DS.
ROYAL DITCH They came, they took and they left...leaving an upset and annoyed CM behind. Wondering where? It was in the Nandi Awards function. Conducted on a grand scale with biggies from politics, business and movie world both Tollywood and Bollywood descending, the event should have been a very exhilarating experience for Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy. But he had to cut a sorry figure. While the biggest star of the millennium Amitabh Bachchan was gracing the stage along with him, King Nagarjuna and Prince Mahesh Babu left the moment they bagged their awards, without showing basic courtesy and respecting protocol. Not at all gentlemen like!!

TIRADE AGAINST KARTHIK With Union Minister S. Jaipal Reddy indicating that he would not contest 2014 Lok Sabha polls, a race has begun in the Congress for grabbing the Chevella seat held by him. Among those who are eyeing the seat is Karthik Reddy, son of State Home Minister Sabitha Reddy. Complaints against the mom-son duo poured in when Amar Kale, AICC vice-president and Rahul Gandhi's special emissary to the north Telangana districts had met the leaders to elicit their opinions. Some leaders warned that the party’s fortunes would further dip, if the leadership continued to repose faith in Ms. Sabitha. Interestingly, Karthik Reddy met Kale to prevail upon him to consider his name for Chevella seat. Yet his chances of getting the ticket appear rather bleak.
TSR IN THE CENTRE STAGE Whatever Dr. T. Subbarami Reddy does, he does it in style, so that the event remains etched on the minds of the people. The latest such event was the TSR TV-9 National awards presentation ceremony held at Shilpa Kala Vedika where a galaxy of stars descended to witness the ceremony that was on a par with Filmfare or National awards function. The event carried the TSR brand name. However, it turned out to be a bit of chaos with TSR donning many a role on the stage including that of compere. At the end, the dais had become a veritable Padmavyuha for all those who were called on to it as they were not allowed to step down till The End. While some looked helplessly trapped, the others looked highly embarrassed. However, one cannot deny that it was a great show with the who-is-who of the film world taking part in it.
SHILPA IN VOGUE The capital’s fashion scenario can’t take the next step without her; it ought to be Mrs. India, Kingfisher Calendar girl, who has rampwalked for many international fashion shows. Recently she walked with showstoppers in Vogue School of Style event and her collection was in the arc lights. Vogue is the ultimate statement in the world of fashion. The very fact that Shilpa was chosen to play a pivotal role in such a haute event speaks volumes for her charisma and calibre. Great going Shilpa!
CYNOSURE OF ALL EYES AWESOME ARUNA Who said politics and fashion don’t gel? Then one perhaps hasn’t come across Minister D.K.Aruna. Recently, at an awards function, Mrs.Aruna was the centre of attraction. Her unmatched beauty and elegance caught the attention of the shutterbugs and the guests alike. So much so, that her captivating beauty overshadowed the charm of many actors and celebrities present there. It’s time politicians, actors and celebrities take some fashion tips from her.
Her father needs no introduction, be it the political scenario, glamour world or business realm. Well, when it comes to her, she is no less, matching him in name and fame. She is rather an indispensable part of any big event in the city. Pinky indeed makes every occasion vibrant with her radiance. This perhaps is why this charismatic lady is either a chief guest or guest of honour at every big launch, P3 party, fashion show or any haute party. She is so loved and admired that there are generally a host of enthusiastic admirers tripping over one another’s toes to celebrate her birthday.
SIRISH’S STEPS TO SUCCESS Success at the box office does matter to many stars as it does not necessarily establish them as actors. Allu Sirish has proved it well. Even though his movie Gouravam didn’t do a roaring business, he has succeeded in creating an image for himself. He has been noticed by many film critics, who have accepted that without any commercial trappings, Sirish has done a commendable job. His next movie is believed to be already in the making. This will be like the acid test for the actor to reach stardom.
ALL IMPORTANT MOTHER-IN-LAW One never knows from which way fame comes to him or her. At times without a much ado, one gets all the attention and becomes the talk of the town! Ask Sobhana Kamineni, she can explain it way better. Of late she is being frequented by city’s biggies and flooded with calls and invitations. She herself has quite a high name; but a little analysis brings to light that the reason of her overnight importance is none other than her son-in-law Ram Charan. Fans have coined this method to reach their favourite star. Indeed smart thinking, the way to Cherry goes through Sobhana and the shortcut must be Upasana!

The Natural Surgeon
By Ranita Ray
C
onfidence is her biggest asset and compassion is her inherent quality. Though she sports a tough look, a closer interaction reveals that she is an out-and-out emotional person. She is called an open book by her family and friends! With her encouraging and humorous husband, Dr. Amit putting in his bit, it was a pleasure knowing Plastic Surgeon Dr. Anjali Saple.
red | may 2013 | 76
Base Hailing from the Mayanagri Mumbai, she obtained her degree from Lokmanya Tilak Medical College. It was followed by an MS in General Surgery and a super specialization in plastic surgery. After working for one year in Tata Memorial Hospital, she shifted to Vizag with her husband in 2001 and joined the premium Seven Hills Hospital. Primarily qualified in reconstructive plastic surgery, she was trained in cosmetic surgery under Dr. Ramachandran in Chennai. Identifying Her Interest Although she always dreamt of becoming a doctor, it was during her training when she was posted to the elite branch of plastic surgery, she realized that this specialty was her real calling. She has been practising it for the past 13 years. Support and Time Management Woman and time management skills are a natural combination. She describes her husband, Neurologist Dr. Amit Saple as her strongest pillar of support and recalls how he took the entire responsibility of their two sons for months together when she went for her fellowships in the US and Brazil and helped her pursue her career successfully. She acknowledges that her sons, father and parents-in-law are considerate. It was her mother’s wish to see her as a doctor; even though she is no more, her blessing has always been with her, says Anjali. Risks, Challenges and Job Satisfaction With technological development, plastic surgery or its sub branches are absolutely safe today. There is no risk involved. However, the only test, especially in the case of plastic surgery, is to meet the patient’s expectations. Since here the surgeon is not treating an injured body part, but trying to transform or alter a near perfect part to a perfect one, patient’s satisfaction is the real challenge. Thus besides a skilled hand, one requires to empathise with the patients. However, the beauty of her profession, she feels is the newness. Every day is a new day as it comes with a new surgery and she learns new aspects of this vast field. red | may 2013 | 77
Her Speciality She is trained to be more diligent. Feminine touch certainly adds finesse to the job, she feels. Patience and care are a gift of nature to the woman and it makes her bond with her patients better. Rewarding Experience Out of many such experiences, she recollects one case which is still vivid in her memory of a young man working in a chemical factory. While on the job, accidentally his palm got sliced in the cutting machine. He was rushed to her in such a condition, that too in the middle of the night. After 12 long hours of painstaking surgery, she could successfully restore the palm to the hand and saved him from a lifetime disability.
HER THOUGHTS
Plastic Surgery: Changes Observed and Progress Expected Earlier it was limited mainly to reconstruction for post burn or post cancer cases. But in the last few years, there has been a sea change in plastic surgery, especially the cosmetic surgery field. It has gained popularity as aesthetic surgery, thanks to the growing number of appearance-conscious people. From removing a mole to getting lip or nose jobs done or even extensive figure correction, it has grown exponentially. There are thorough researches going on, especially for skin regeneration, to recreate skin
red | may 2013 | 78
from skin cells. This will do miracles for accident or burn cases where a lot of skin is lost. She is also hopeful about robotic surgery to pick up in this realm. Toughest Role - Being a Doc, Wife or a Mother? As the responsibility of moulding the personality of the children lies on your shoulder, the role of a mother is undoubtedly the toughest, she shares. She further adds that kids are the best teachers one can have and in the process of rearing them, it’s a new learning experience every single day. Off-Job Fitness occupies a prime place in her daily routine, thus an hour of aerobics or a walk is must for her. Her diet is purely about homemade food. It is this habit which helped her to run the half marathon of 21 km. in Mumbai last year. Owner of a beautiful balcony garden, a major part of Anjali’s free time is for gardening. The credit of her impressive home décor goes to her keen interest in interior designing, which she calls an extension of her creativity. Strength and Weakness Her passion for hard work comes as her greatest strength. However, she feels her disposition is her weakness, as she gets disappointed too soon, if she doesn’t get quick or desired results.
WISHLIST If you have your heart in whatever you are doing, you don’t have to struggle. All those women who want to be plastic surgeons, go for it. There is no other profession that can give job satisfaction as it does. Beauty lies in the heart. Often patients treat us like Gods, but I feel I am just an instrument in God’s hands. Rather I am blessed to be in this profession to render such life changing services.
On a philanthropic note, she wants to develop a place for mentally challenged people and bring them into the mainstream. She feels they are still being treated as outcasts in India. In her personal life, she wishes to have little more leisure time. Given a chance, she would love to explore the world, get into some kind of adventure sports like sky diving or bungee jumping.

Fitness Fitness is one thing that has to be given utmost importance, irrespective of your age. I strongly advocate the awareness of fitness. A fit and healthy body is the best fashion statement (but people often misinterpret beauty as fitness) and yields to positive traits that in turn leads to success in whatever field one functions. So work on fitness rather than beauty which is an obvious byproduct of keeping fit. Marathons I get a high whenever I finish a marathon and it is a great feeling. But I would not advise this to everyone as each person has different inclinations and choices. At the end of it what matters is the adrenaline rush you get after any sport which is very refreshing and satisfying. For me any sport, fitness or marathons hold equal importance as they bring in heaps of positivity and self confidence, besides keeping me on my toes. Lean & Mean Well, compared to earlier days there is an improvement in the health awareness among the youth. One thing that the youth go wrong with, especially the girls, is the fad to stay lean and starve themselves which is totally wrong and it could adversely affect their studies or work. Eating healthy food and keeping fit always pump in radiance into you. Fashion Fashion has a perfect and a practical definition for me; it is something that you are comfortable in and not following the trends blindly. Your style statement is entirely different from others and I follow my own trends without bothering about what is in and what is passÊ. Heady Feel It was my husband’s passion that was rubbed off on me, but gradually it has blossomed to a level where I connect a lot to wine-making and tasting as well. Sounds easy, but wine tasting is a herculean task though I enjoy every bit of it. Viticulture is my passion which sprang from my love for plants and agriculture and it is my niche just like marathons that I would love to explore. KRSMA Part Krishna + part Uma = KRSMA! The main aim of KRSMA is to produce premium and quality wines to be marketed world over. The pre-marketing response and feedbacks are amazing and we have received good reviews from wine critics and won medals at international forums. The next big step is branding and marketing which will be done very soon.
Ten years down the line Ten years down the line I would like to put India on the world map of the wine industry. I want to create awareness of walking and fitness among more and more people, especially women and give back something constructive to society.
is healthy and eats healthy, so does the entire family. Therefore the awareness has to be increased manifold.
The North Pole Experience WOW! That is the first word that comes to my mind when I recollect the marathon at the North Pole. After the marathon at Antarctica which had a temperature of minus 20 degrees we thought that North Pole would be on similar lines but to our surprise minus 34 degrees and minus 20 degrees was a huge difference and I was totally numb! My body was freezing, I could hardly see anything as eyeglasses were of no help due to the frost. There were cracks in the ice so every step was to be taken with much calculation. But all is well that ends well. Though a little scary the adventure shall be cherished all through my life. Feeling of being the only Indian couple to have completed seven marathons in seven continents Not the only Indian couple but we are the only couple across the globe to have completed the challenge of the seven continent club. It was a very proud moment and a cherished memory but I do not want to live in the past and we are ready to face new challenges and win new accolades. I always want to be an achiever! Grand Slam Marathon Club Grand Slam Marathon Club is when you complete running marathons in seven continents and the North Pole as well. Then, you become a member of the Grand Slam Club. Prerequisite to win such laurels Yes, a lot of hard work, both physically and mentally, is required to reach a certain level. We were ready to meet the challenges with our hard work, perseverance and confidence. Ikebana Club I am into this club for the past 16 years now. Nature is my passion. It is probably the best stress buster and gives you a serene feeling, besides the power to create something. Increasing awareness about health and sanitation in women It is no doubt increasing but not at the desired pace. A lot more awareness and development is needed here. Sri Kandukuri Veeresalingam Pantulu had always stressed on woman’s education. Now the stress should be on her health. If she
Hyderabad on the Marathon Map Hyderabad can surely be on the marathon map of India but it would take some more time to be on the world map. The Guinness World Record Undoubtedly it is the best and an amazing feeling but as I have mentioned before it is past and I have a lot more to achieve. Marathons to be clubbed with charity Why not? It is a fantastic feeling of giving back to society and at the same time improving your health. A perfect win-win situation!
What next? I like to take the road less travelled or rather not travelled! People often complete city marathons and then move on to extreme marathons like in the seven continents. I would like to do the Big6 Marathons in Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York. I have completed the Tokyo Marathon last month and am eyeing for the other five cities now. Do your children too run? Yes, my twin daughters Pragnya and Priyanka ran once and will continue to do so. red | may 2013 | 84
Your fitness secret‌ Yoga Message to the youth Never sit idle, time is the most valuable gift available at your disposal. So put it to constructive use. Nature You are a part of nature and nature is a part of you. Hence I request everyone to conserve nature. It is the only gift that the present generation can give to posterity. Kindly do not tamper with it. Family time It is of utmost importance and a time that always gives me a high and I can do anything for a perfect family day. Given a choice between a holiday and a family day I would undoubtedly choose the latter. Her weakness I am too lazy and my fetish for clothes is my biggest weakness. Not interested Diamonds are unfortunately not my best friends. All the diamonds that I possess are taken because my husband drags me to buy them. I would rather splurge on clothes than on diamonds as I said clothes are my weakness.
Idolize I do not have a particular person whom I idolize as it is very situational. I idolize Indra Nooyi in the business world. Women of Hyderabad Enterprising Luxury The definition of luxury varies from person to person and at different levels. Truly speaking there is no end to luxury. What may be a luxury for me may be a comfort for someone else.
Your best experience It was during a marathon in France where the way was full of vineyards resembling a carnival and fun time. Incidentally at the banquet dinner, the national anthems of various countries except ours were played. I rendered our Anthem and got a standing ovation. It was an out of this world and heartening feeling that I cherish forever.

Philanthropy Should be inculcated in one and all especially in children. Philanthropy brings you that ultimate satisfaction that nothing else offers. It is your responsibility to help someone in need. Beauty of Hampi I would love to go there over and over again. I have an emotional connect with that place. Every visit seems like the first one and it is a calm and serene feeling that goes beyond words.

A SPOT OF TROUBLE
American singer Selena Gomez has been making headlines, but not over her split with Justin Beiber. Her latest song - Come and Get It - has Indian beats and was debuted at the MTV Movie Awards 2013. She was in flashy red attire, sporting bindi on the forehead and a golden Indian looking anklet. She has irked the feelings of a Hindu group who made a statement that, “The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition of Hinduism and has religious significance. It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects.” They have demanded an apology from the star. However, no official response has been issued.
PARIS ON PA
Paris Jackson, 15-year-old daughter of King of Pop Michael Jackson is slowly opening about growing up with the music legend. Talking reverently about her late dad, she called him an “incredible father” and explained what she hopes to do with his legacy. Her ambition, surprisingly, does not include showbiz. She also said that MJ was a protective father and she and her brothers loved him to death. She added that he would try to educate them as much as he could and was always looking out for them. Paris said that she had a normal childhood and her father did give her dance lessons (girl’s gotta moonwalk).

It is a known fact that doing something new and different is Victory Venkatesh’s forte. He also encourages new directors and recently he was seen alongside Mahesh Babu in the multi-starrer ‘Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu.’ Latest buzz is that he accepted to do a silent film, a la his senior Kamal Haasan in ‘Pushpak Vimanam’, a silent blockbuster in 80s. It is learnt that Venky will take up the film under his family’s Suresh Productions as a special film on the banner’s golden jubilee (50th year). Let us hope that the film mints gold for the banner.

scion of the Akkineni family likes to make news with his work. Though he keeps a low profile, he has a huge fan following, comprising both sexes of all ages. With grandfathers ANR and Ramanaidu and dad King Nagarjuna, Naga Chaitanya has a legacy to keep up to. However, he has successfully carved out a new path for himself. His debut in Tollywood with Josh fetched him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debutant - South and Nandi Award for Best Male Debutant. Considered as Tollywood’s quintessential boy-next-door, he wooed and wowed people with his wonderful performance in Ye Maaya Chesave. 100% Love was a runaway success at the box-office. Right now, he is having the time of his life. Taking some time out from his busy schedule, Chay, as he is fondly called, the shy guy people make him out to be, talks to Nirupama Reddy in a no-holds-barred interview. H
EXCERPTS Your grandfathers are veterans of Tollywood. Is it difficult to keep up the legacy? I am lucky. Not everyone gets this opportunity, when he/she enters the industry. So, I would like to take it as a challenge to keep up the legacy. That’s what keeps me going. How does it feel to be tagged as the “youngest hero” in Tollywood? I don’t think I am the youngest hero in Tollywood. It feels fantastic, if I come across as one. So probably when I get older, I won’t look my actual age. (laughs) Having godfathers in Tollywood, is it a boon or a bane? It definitely is a boon. They have set such a good example and high standards; it is good for the younger generation, like us, because we have to work harder to keep them up. How do you handle constant comparison with your fellow stars most of whom who also happen to be your extended family? Comparisons are always good, very healthy. That’s when you keep working
harder. We would be lazy and complacent if there is no competition around us. By being compared with fellow colleagues, who are doing much better and coming out with new films and ideas, I strive to outdo them and be on top. In the profession, do you feel any threat from your dad? Of course, fortunately he looks younger by the day. He is doing some fantastic love stories, which I thought I was very good at. I definitely look at my dad as competition. Does your dad have a say in the selection of your movies? I always respect his opinion. Whenever I like a script and want to go ahead with it, I always take his opinion. Any possibility of sharing screen space with your cousin Daggubati Rana? Of course, we would love to do a film together. I am sure that if the right script comes across, it will happen.
Tell us about your 3G (3 generations) film wherein you, your dad and grandpa join together. It is not titled 3G. We have to take a call on it. It is going on floors from June and has all the elements and is a complete entertainer. How is it working with Sunil in Thadaka? Sunil is a dedicated and fantastic artiste. Look at his transformation and growth; it is truly amazing. Is your forthcoming film ‘Autonagar Surya’ a conscious effort to break the chocolate boy image? Yes, definitely. It is a script that is very close to me and working with Deva Katta has been the best thing that has happened to me so far. It was a conscious decision as this is a character that I have never played before. You have your fans mesmerized till date with your movie Ye Maaya Chesave. What is your take on that? Honestly I don’t know. When I did this movie, I looked at it as a love story that was true to feelings. I did not know that so many people had such
PERSONAL DIARY love stories and would connect with it. Let’s just say that it was a god’s gift to me. Why don’t we see you active on social networking and blogging sites? As my work itself is in a very social atmosphere, I like to keep my private time to myself. What made you shift from Chennai to Hyderabad? Telugu films. How was your experience at Hollywood Studios? I had done a short acting course in New York Film Academy. It was a fantastic experience. Their kind of movie making is different from ours and I learnt a lot. Do you relate to the character of Karthik from YMC? Of course. I do relate to a portion of Karthik from Ye Maaya Chesave. He is very much like me. What is the most shocking controversy you have ever faced? That Kajal slapped me on the sets of Dhada. Tell us something about your bachelor pad? It is not a bachelor pad, but a nice apartment that I moved into 5-6 months back. It has been interesting, living on my own. What is the thing you keep in mind before signing the dotted line. Script, director or co-star. The script. No doubt about it. Is Autonagar Surya an outcome of your obsession for wheels? Yes, I am obsessed with cars and bikes and anything to do with automobiles. But Autonagar Surya has nothing much to do with it. It is more based on unions that used to control the transportation system in the 70’s and 80’s. Given a chance to remake a film of your dad, which one would it be? I am in the process of doing it now. It is Hello Brother. You are never seen in the party circuit of the city like other stars, any particular reason? I am not much of a social person. Yet, I like going out and partying, but with close friends.
What are the pros and cons of being in the film industry? I don’t think there are any cons. Everything is a pro. It is a fantastic industry and your job is such that you get to play a different role in every film. No other job offers that. I don’t have to come to the same office everyday and sit behind the same desk. Every day I go to a new location (chuckles). I think the only con is that you get used to this amazing industry and you wonder, what am I going to do when the industry does not want me anymore. The geeky look in 100% Love was well accepted by all. Did you have any inhibitions in portraying that character? No, not at all. I am always open to trying out looks that I have not tried before.
Leisure time is dedicated to? Anything to do with automobiles. Your fitness mantra? Make sure you work out every day, at least 5 times a week for about 45 minutes to an hour. Don’t just go to the gym. Keep active and eat right. Favourite actors, apart from your family? Suriya and Ranbir Kapoor. Favourite co-stars? I can’t name just one. Most memorable incident on the sets? I am not much of a prankster or anything. I am quiet on the sets and a very boring co-star, that way. Mantra in life. Everything happens for a reason. First crush In the 8th std.
Samantha and you have created waves in Ye Maaya Chesave. Can this hit pair repeat the same in Autonagar Surya? Definitely. There is a very nice love story to Autonagar Surya. I think the audience will like it.
Do you have any pet names for Akhil? No. What is your favourite sport? Motor racing. Your grandpa and dad acted in Suresh Productions banner. When are you doing a film under the same banner? Probably sometime soon.
How was the experience of working with Ram Gopal Varma for Bezawada? It was fantastic. I think that every actor should work with Ram Gopal Varma, as what they learn in one film with him, will probably take 10 or more otherwise.
Whom do you emulate? Grandpa or dad? Both of them.
It is heard that you are upbeat about acting in the remake of ‘Charminar’, a hit in Kannada. Will you be soon signing on the dotted line? I saw Charminar and liked it very much. They are still figuring out how it can be shaped to suit the sensibilities of Telugu cinema. Once it is agreed upon, I would like to do the film. Nothing is confirmed as yet. What do you prefer - box-office success or critical acclaim? A good mix of both. You believe in talent or luck? Both.
Any Bollywood plans? Nothing right now. My short term future plan is to enter into the Tamil industry. Then I will look at Bollywood.

EOS REBEL SL1 Canon has launched the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR camera called the EOS 100D or Rebel Sl1. There has been a considerable downsizing of components resulting in a thinner sensor module and smaller shutter mechanism and footprint circuit board. Most of the controls and features found on a Rebel-series camera have been retained. This portable device has an optical viewfinder and a 3” large touchscreen. A front dial and dedicated ISO, exposure compensation and AF/AE lock buttons are among the familiar controls. Its touchscreen is identical in resolution to that on the EOS 650D and 700D, but is fixed, not articulated. The camera has Scene Intelligent Auto which helps in easy and simple shooting. It also has a feature called Effect Shot mode, which creates two images from the same photo; the normal one and another with a selected Instagram-like filter. There is no Wi-Fi feature. It is sure value for money for those who want a discreet DSLR good enough to do the job.

Simply put, it is technology-aided gardening. The device has a smooth rectangular base with rounded corners and an overhanging lighting bar. The two specialized LED lights ensure that the plants look natural and give adequate light for the plants to grow. You can use the device like any other plug-and-play. Simply plug it into a power socket, add some water and wait for the plants to grow. At the heart of it is the ‘growth medium’ (used in each plant cartridge), which is a nanotech material engineered to supply roots with the correct amount of oxygen, water and nutrients at the right time. No gardening knowledge is required as the entire process is taken care of by the sensors, software and precise electronics. Each unit comes with cartridges for basil, thyme and lemon balm. Refill cartridges are available for chili pepper, mini tomato, peppermint, spinach, salad rocket and various kinds of lettuce.
S P E C I F I C A T I O N S • Size: 11.8'' length x 4.7'' width x 11.4'' max height • Weight: Approx. 850 g • Built-in light contains 2 LEDs, 3W each. • Electricity plug compatible in US, continental Europe, the UK and most other countries with standardized plugs. red | may 2013 | 100

or a young man, who heads a 50 million-dollar pharma hub, to be an incredible repository of knowledge and power is no surprise. But his being personable, approachable and unassuming certainly knocks you off your feet. When Eisai, a 9 billion-dollar innovative pharmaceutical major, went scouting for a person to establish and head its first facility in India, found just what it was looking for in Mr. Sanjit Singh Lamba.
red | may 2013 | 101
An astute and dynamic Sanjit may be controlling the Vizag wing of the MNC, but his enterprise and jurisdiction transcend the international boundaries. He is the Managing Director of Eisai Knowledge Centre that develops, manufactures and markets efficacious medicines. He heads the global brands of Eisai worldwide and also Global Procurement Strategy for Eisai. He is managing the Parenteral Drug Association, Indian chapter as its President and pursuing his Ph.D. PharmaVoice, a U.S. publication, has listed him as one of the “100 Most Inspiring People in the Life-Sciences.” Interestingly, this global citizen is quintessentially an Indian. Listening to Guru Bani is an integral part of the daily regimen for the devout Sanjit, who is also an accomplished Ghazal-singer. For this staunch advocate of joint family values, any reference to household means his parents, his family and that of his brother. Sanjit outlines his success story.
EXCERPTS
Beginning I would have been a medical doctor, if only my parents had not refused to send me to the then riot-torn Varanasi to study in the prestigious Benaras Hindu University. I settled for the next best and obtained M. Pharm (Pharmaceutical Technology) degree from Punjab University, Chandigarh. My choice was based on a single instinct that I should be in a peoplecentric profession and to do something for the patients. Thus began my tryst with pharmaceuticals and MNCs. Prior to joining Eisai, I was with Pfizer, Merck Sharp and Dohme, Ranbaxy and Lupin in various disciplines. Destination Eisai When it was decided to establish Eisai Knowledge Centre here, the people at the helm thought that it would take at least five years to establish a facility of this magnitude but we readied the complex within 22 months and won the Facility of the Year award for Project Execution category in 2012. We also won the CII first prize for excellence in the area of Environment, Health and Safety for 2012 in the Medium Scale sector and another first prize also in Pharma/ Chemicals and Petrochemicals category.
Japanese may be tough taskmasters but once you establish your credentials, they give you total freedom. It is a privilege to head this organisation which runs on high scruples. We work only on products that we innovate. Though we make supportive products for diabetes etc., our main focus is on neurology, gastroenterology, oncology and immunology. Why India? We were looking for a place to set up a supply hub for our 10 subsidiaries functioning across the world for both active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and formulations. India, equipped with skilled talent in organic chemistry, was a natural choice. This is the second API manufacturing site of Eisai, the first being in Kashima, Japan. Work culture: India vis-a-vis Japan As we are culturally dissimilar, the contrast is glaring. They plan the project in detail, at least 10 years in advance and execute it unhurriedly. We plan just for five years and execute faster. Their pursuit for perfection runs on ‘all or none’ basis. We are cost-conscious and they are not. They are consensus-oriented, resulting in delays whereas we have fewer persons making decisions. In this kind of ventures, we have the best of both the worlds. It works fabulously.
red | may 2013 | 102
Challenges In addition to facing inevitable technological challenges, I had a lot many things to prove; the foremost of them being getting our product and facility meet the exacting global standards. Talent management is yet another major issue. Vizag is still an evolving hub. Hence attracting talent to this place, leave alone retaining, is no mean task. Exporting pharmaceutical products to Japan is a tough task. The patient in Japan is a perfectionist, demanding a cosmetically perfect product, unheard in other markets around the world. A small spot or a scratch on a product is sufficient for a complaint and a recall. This is a ‘high risk- high reward’ business where recalls can be disastrous for any company. Why Vizag? We needed a 50-acre land to have all the facilities under one roof and after surveying 15 places, we zeroed in on this city because of the amenities it offers. The big port, SEZ zone with its infrastructural support and most importantly, the common effluent treatment facility are the major lure. Ingredients of success Dedication and passion; my willingness to step out of my comfort zone, moving into and out of many roles and my love to learn and grow in a precision-demanding industry. Of course, I believe in destiny that put me in the right place at the right time.
Traits of a team leader… Leading by example, I touch my people at an emotional level, treating them with dignity and respect. Transparency, ethics and integrity inspire confidence in the people who help you become successful. This is what I expect from my employer and hand down the same to my men. I am very candid and a hard taskmaster. But I am also considerate and compassionate. One lesson I learnt is not to expect uniform performance from all and not to ask why the others were not able to do what I could do. All of us come into this world with our individual baggage and perform as per our capacity. Advice to the freshers Focus on your work and look for ways to innovate. Gain exposure to as many strategic areas as possible. Interface with the universities One of the reasons of our setting up the facility here is to make use of the fresh talent that comes out of the institutions like GITAM and Andhra University. Of course, the fresh graduates are only 30% ready. We hone their skills further through our in-house training. We also have our own assessing techniques. Heading a foreign firm - advantages and disadvantages Your horizon and outlook become global. We are trying out amalgamation of thinking process of various countries, which in itself is enriching. No disadvantages whatsoever.
Did you move away from science? A time comes when we have to choose a specific path and I chose a broader area where I am in charge of the entire gamut of activities. It is more gratifying as I ensure that the right people are doing the science, which is most appropriately marketed. Social dose From this June we are donating 50 crore tablets that would benefit 350 million victims of Filariasis every year. It would be given to WHO for the coming 7 years. The unforgettable event When I was in college, my father (Mr. Ajit Singh Lamba) asked me if I would join Pfizer, the world’s largest company. Exactly a year later, I was there after successfully facing a tough competition. Only two of us were selected among the 200 contenders. His inspiration My parents prepared me to face hardships. Thanks to that foundation, today I can adjust to any situation. The best advice he ever got One advice that remains relevant to me even now is that of Mr. Fernandez, my former boss, who told me to grab any opportunity to learn without seeking immediate gains. Falling in tune Inheriting a musical gene from my mother (Mrs. Inderjeet Kaur), I also had music at my heart when I went to Mumbai and had the privilege of interacting with stalwarts like Jagjit Singh and Gulzar. However, for the time being, I keep it only as a hobby.
THE WIFE’S SAY Shalu Singh He is extremely dedicated to his profession. We have not attended a single social or family function for years. Except for the holiday we have, he can barely spare any time for us. But he has my unflinching support and understanding. Sanjit is caring and gives us his 100 per cent when he is with us, taking care of the children and dropping them to school before he leaves for his work. Ours was an arranged marriage and despite being a qualified textile designer, I happily opted to be a homemaker. I enjoy a lot of support from my parents-in-law. This helps me tide over Sanjit’s frequent and protracted absences from home on business. We have two bundles of joy 10-year-old twin daughters - Jasmeen and Jasleen.
IN SHORT THE REAL SANJIT People think I am a tough nut to crack but I am extremely soft within. HIS ATTITUDE A measly group of us (six) could develop a world class injectable that earned the US approval. It was like going to the moon on a bullock cart. But if people are resolute, they can reach mighty goals even with meagre resources. HIS DREAMS To own a state-of-the art music studio; learn to play violin and piano; visit Seven Wonders; own a farmhouse. STRESS BUSTER Listening to Jagjit Singh

ABATE ARTHRITIS
T
o answer the basic question as to ‘What is Arthritis?’ it is nothing but the ‘inflammation of one or more joints’. It is derived from the Greek "arthros" for joint and Latin "itis" for inflammation. Symptoms include varied levels of pain, swelling, joint stiffness, and sometimes a constant ache around the joint(s). Arthritis is a condition that affects the health of the joints in the body. Arthritis can affect men and women, children and adults.

Dr. Suresh Adimulam
There are many types of arthritis (over 100 identified, and the number is growing). The types range from... a. Those related to wear and tear of cartilage b. Those associated with inflammation resulting from a dysregulation of the immune system. The different types are... • Osteoarthritis • Rheumatoid Arthritis • Sero Negative Inflammatory Arthritis: Includes Psoriatic Arthritis, Reactive Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Enteropathic Arthritis, Enthesopathy related Arthritis and undifferentiated Arthritis. • Infectious arthritis: Includes Septic Arthritis • Crystal arthritis: Includes Gout Causes of Arthritis It could be that the cartilage is wearing away, a lack of fluid, autoimmunity, infection and certain environmental factors like smoking. Although a genetic link has been expressed, there is no direct inheritance of arthritis. For obesity, osteoarthritis, mal-alignment of joints and previous injury play a role. An intention between environmental and genetic risk factors increases instance of rheumatoid arthritis. IN DETAIL Osteoarthritis This is the commonest type of arthritis and is commonly described as degenerative arthritis. The cartilage between the bones is commonly damaged and the joint space is reduced causing pain and swelling. It could be as a result of trauma to the joint, infection of the joint or mal-alignment of joint and old age. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) It is an auto immune disease associated with stiffness and pain in joints. Typically it affects the peripheral joints for example hands, wrists, shoulders and knees. Commonly joints on both the hands and legs are affected. If untreated early, it destroys joints rapidly leading to deformity. Sero Negative Inflammatory Arthritis The patients in this group of auto immune diseases have not only their
peripheral joints but also can have involvement of the spine and can have pain in the buttock region. Stiffness in the morning is a common feature of this group. Psoriatic Arthritis It occurs in about 15% of patients who have skin rash called psoriasis. There may be a pain at the insertion of the muscle to the bone. Often the whole finger or toe may swell up like a sausage. Reactive Arthritis It is a condition which is commonly seen in patients who have had a bacterial or viral infection in other areas of the body which acts as a trigger for the joints to start becoming hot and swollen. It typically affects the joints of the lower limbs eg. knees or ankle joints. It may be accompanied by symptoms such as red eyes, scaly skin rashes over the hands or feet, diarrhoea, mouth ulcers, etc. Ankylosing Spondylitis This is an auto immune condition typically affecting the spine associated with stiffness and reduced range of motion in the spine. There is generally a family history in this case. Enteropathic Arthritis This type of arthritis is seen in patients suffering from other auto immune conditions for the bowels such as Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Enthesopathy related arthritis This type of arthritis is seen in patients suffering from conditions affecting the tendons and ligaments instead of the joint membranes. Undifferentiated Arthritis Early undifferentiated arthritis is defined as any arthritis of recent onset that cannot be classified according to the existing criteria for specific rheumatic disorders. Infectious Arthritis - Septic Arthritis It is a type of arthritis caused by infection in a joint. The joint is hot and swollen and very painful. It can come on quite rapidly over a period of hours and progress quickly to destroy the joint. It is a medical emergency and needs to be diagnosed and treated urgently. Crystal Arthritis - Gout Arthritis It is an auto inflammatory condition caused by variation of uric acid level in the blood. The attacks can be
sudden in onset, very painful and cause marked disability. The patient is typically not able to tolerate touch/put weight on the joint involved. Managing Arthritis How to prevent progression of Osteoarthritis? 1. Weight Control 2. Low impact exercise activities 3. Physical therapy 4. Ambulatory aids 5. Joint supplements 6. Medications to modify the disease process. For arthritis resulting from dysregulation of immune system... Quick medical advice from a rheumatologist is necessary to diagnose the exact type of arthritis. Remember, the sooner the inflammatory arthritis can be diagnosed, damage to the joint can be prevented and more of the joint can be preserved. A person needs to work out the joint stiffness without damaging it. The best way involves building strength in the muscles that surround the affected joint, in order to achieve a good range of motion. Try out the... Quadriceps Sets Lying on the back with both legs straight, tighten front of thigh to push the back of both knees toward the ground. Hold 5 seconds, then relax. Perform three sets of 10 repetitions. Diet Although there are lots of rumours about tomatoes, potatoes, chicken, tamarind exaggerating the symptoms of arthritis, there is no scientific study to support this claim. In general the advice is to avoid foods rich in fat and cholesterol. FAQ I have Arthritis. Is joint replacement the only option? It depends on the types of arthritis. For arthritis resulting from dysregulation of immune system, it can be controlled with medication. For osteoarthritis in advanced stages, it needs joint replacement. BEAT THE HEAT U
niverse is a macrocosm and man is the microcosm, made up of the Panchabutas. So, changes in the environment do have an effect on the health of mankind. Therefore, one needs to adjust to the varying seasons and adopt suitable measures for that particular season for maintaining good health.
Here is some useful lifestyle information to beat the summer heat. Water is the best option to quench thirst. It is a key ingredient in keeping the body cool. With high humidity levels, sweat doesn’t evaporate quickly and prevents the body from releasing heat. Thus, it is necessary to hydrate and drink water, even when you are not thirsty. Avoid caffeinated or carbonated beverages, alcoholic beverages and those high in sugar. All these contain preservatives, colours and sugar. They are acidic and diuretic, causing loss of fluids through urine. Many soft drinks contain diluted phosphoric acid, which damages the inner lining of the digestive tract. An excessive intake of soft drinks increases phosphorous levels in the blood, which separates calcium from the bones and moves it into the blood, making the bones porous and brittle. It also causes plaque on the teeth, kidney stones, arthritis and bone spur. Soft drinks also reduce mineral levels in the body to such an extent that enzymes are unable to function well, resulting in indigestion. Do not drink very chilled liquids They may cool you down for just a while. Drinking really cold liquids may lead to a slight constriction of the blood vessels in the skin and decrease heat loss and is not advisable. red | may 2013 | 115
Clothing should be comfortable and sweat absorbing. Avoid wearing nylon track pants for the workout or practice because there is no way nylon fabric can absorb sweat. Cotton clothes are comfortable and preferably wear cotton socks during the workout.
Minimize the intake of hot, spicy and salty foods. The body retains salt in the organic form found in fruits and veggies; the inorganic salt, meanwhile, is digested and needs to be thrown out of the body. And this is why you need to drink water!
Limit all strenuous activity.
Cut the intake of fried foods, like vadas, samosas, chips, bhajias, farsans, etc. Fat has a thermal effect.
Eat light, nutritious and non-fatty meals. Reduce intake of vegetables and fruits that generate heat, like spinach, radish, hot peppers, onions, garlic, beetroot, pineapple, grapes and ripe mangoes (if you cannot resist mangoes, soak them overnight in water).
Maintain good hygiene levels. By adhering to nature’s provision of healthy food choices, we can experience long lasting health and vitality. “STAY FIT & BE HEALTHY”
Minimize the intake of dried fruits. Increase the intake of fresh fruit. Use sabza (tulsi seeds) in your drinks as this has a very cooling effect on the body. Include lots of fruits and vegetables in the form of salads and fresh juices, preferably without sugar, in your diet. Drink lemon juice, coconut water and thin buttermilk, to replenish the fluids that are lost through sweating. Avoid sugary foods, especially honey and molasses and stick to natural sugars available from fruits and vegetables.

COOL Climes
By Ranita Ray
W
ith mercury levels soaring day by day, it’s time for us to chillax in cool environs. Though predominantly a hot country, India has a few hill stations that are safe havens during the sultry summers. So let us be off to these salubrious climes.
CHAIL
Just 43 km. away from Shimla, one finds this stunningly beautiful albeit a small hill station that is surrounded by three hills that are endowed with the forests of oak, gigantic deodar and chir pine. In fact, the fragrance emanating from these forests was said to have attracted Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, who made Chail his summer capital.
Wildlife Sanctuary The sanctuary houses the red deer, the Indian hare, barking deer, leopard, the Kashmiri squirrel, porcupines and many other species. Palace The magnificent palace sprawled on 75 acres has turned into a luxury hotel having several deluxe rooms and suites replete with antique furniture. Highest Cricket Ground This ground is famous as one of the world’s highest pitches located at an altitude of 7,500 ft. Surrounded by tall Deodar trees, the ground is used for playing Polo besides cricket tournaments. You can have an amazing view of Satluj Valley, Shimla and Kasauli at night from here. On the other side are the spectacular Himalayan ranges.
Kandaghat Want to have a majestic view of entire Chail? Then the Kandaghat is the place. It has the temples of Shiva and Mulla of Baba Thadda. The famous Karol ranges have a cave believed to be dug by Pandavas and house a temple of Lord Krishna. Kali Ka Tibba A visit to the Kali Ka Tibba (temple of Goddess Kali) located on the hilltop is a must to have a view of the entire valley up to Solan. Surrounded by green pines and colourful flowers, the temple also has a vermilion-smeared Lord Hanuman. Bonus Boon Sadhupul can be your ideal place for excursion. Aqua sports lovers, try a bit of fishing at the Gaura River. It also offers an excellent opportunity of trekking to Kandaghat, Rajgarh and other places. O STAY

COORG
Nestled in Western Ghats at an altitude of 3500 ft. above sea level, Coorg is aptly called the 'Scotland of India' and 'Kashmir of the South'. Dense teak wood forests, jade valleys, breathtaking coffee plantations and undulated mountain ranges are a feast to the eye. Waterfalls Located near Madikeri, is the spectacular Abbey Falls. The Kaveri river cascades down a rock face from a height of 70 feet. Vehicles can reach the entrance of these falls, from where a downhill walk of 500 metres takes one to the waterfalls. A hanging bridge across the gorge offers a good view of the falls. Iruppu Waterfall (80 km. away from Madikeri) also calls for a visit. According to legends, Rama and Lakshmana passed this way in search of Sita. Lakshmana shot an arrow into the Brahmagiri hills and brought into being the river Lakshmana Tirtha when Rama asked him to fetch some water. The river descends into a waterfall and takes a 60 metre plunge down. Wildlife Sanctuaries Nisargadhama, a wildlife sanctuary, with its calm and serene beauty, rejuvenates one and all. Connected by a rope bridge, it is an island in the hub of the river Kaveri.
One can stay in the residential cottages to watch peacocks, deer, leopard and elephants. Equally enchanting is the Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary located on the northern part of Coorg with a shola grassland habitat. Kumara Parvat peak lies within it; thus trekkers can have a great time here. Madikeri Fort Originally built as a mud fort by Mudduraja in 17th century, it was rebuilt in granite by Tipu Sultan who named it as Jaffarabad. There is also a palace inside the fort. In the north-east corner at the entrance are two life size masonry elephants. It houses a prison, a temple, a chapel, a small museum and assorted government offices. Elephant Training Camp Located in Dubare region, it trains the wild elephants with the help of local tribes Kurabas. Enjoy the sights of these tamed giants having a bath and scrubbed fresh by their mahouts and obeying various commands. One can ride, try bathing and feeding these adorable animals. Nalknad Palace With its eye-catching ancient paintings and marvellous historical architecture especially the intricate wood carvings, it attracts many tourists. Used as a hunting lodge, this double storied structure was used by the Kodava kings. Activities Coorg offers quite a lot of exciting outdoor activities like angling, trekking and bird watching. Trekkers can try challenging treks in Tadiandamol and Brahmagiri. Even golfers can have an amazing experience at its three golf courses- ‘Mercara Downs’ in Mercara, ‘Coorg Golf Links’ in Bittangala and one in Pollibetta. red | may 2013 | 119

KHAJJIAR
Not able to make it to Switzerland? Needn’t worry, here we take you to Khajjiar, a place with a small glacier lake surrounded by dense Deodar forests in Himachal Pradesh. It has earned the sobriquet Mini Switzerland. Perched at an altitude of 1,960 metres, this place can be reached by rail or road from Pathankot or Leh.
Khajjiar Lake This perennial lake is fed by small streams and surrounded by cedar forests and hills. The first thing that treats your eyes, is the ‘growth’ of some weeds called as Vacha. Khaji Nag Temple Legend says that Khajji Nag, the Lord of the serpents won a fierce battle and was destined to live in this place. Besides its excellent architecture, the temple is famous for its golden dome. Inside the temple, there is a mandapa , where the images of the Pandavas along with the defeated Kauravas hang from the roof. There are idols of Lord Shiva besides that of Goddess Hadimba. Kalatop Sanctuary Midway between Khajjiar and Dalhousie is the place called Kalatop, literally meaning black cap. This heavily wooded place is declared as Kalatop Sanctuary. With its black bear, the mountain goat, the barking deer and its fine mountain views, this sanctuary is a must see destination.
WHERE
Additional Attractions One can also visit some manmade attractions like the nine-hole golf course. Within the dense deodar forest of Khajjiar are situated many small villages like Rota, Ladi, etc. which are known for their apple orchards. Apart from horse riding, one can enjoy zorbing on the slopes of Khajjiar meadows.

World-Class Biz Students
Prof. V. K. Kumar Dean & Director, GSIB
GSIB offers MBA programmes in International Business, International Banking & Finance, and Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management. The School, actively engaged in research, consultancy, and executive education, is ranked the second best in the country in International Business. Prof. Kumar expresses his views on International Business in general and International Business Programmes in particular. Current Trends International Business.. I foresee some important consolidating trends in the international business scenario, following integration and globalization in the world economic order. In the process, the emerging economies of Asia and Latin America are likely to be strengthened. China and India have emerged as two economic giants to be reckoned with. We are moving into an era of Multinationals from the emerging nations as they have developed manufacturing industry and huge forex reserves to finance investment plans. Similarly the international business will become fiercely competitive, resulting in red | may 2013 | 143
thinning margins of profitability, reduction in costs and improving productivity. Continuous innovation would be the focus of firms. Promoting demand in the developed nations and simultaneously diversifying into newer markets would be another trend. Innovation and growth in Information and Communication Technology and the emergence of Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management services would greatly facilitate this diversified and multi-location, production, distribution and consumption trends in future. Career and Job Opportunities ‌.. There are opportunities galore, both in the Line Management and Specialist profiles, with the major functional specializations in Finance, Marketing, Supply Chain & Logistics, HR, EXIM Operations, Markets, Exchanges and Consultancy Services. Candidates can start as Management Trainees with an MBA (International Business), MBA (International Banking and Finance) and MBA (Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management). All business sectors including Manufacturing, Banking and Insurance, IT and ITES, Shipping and Logistics, Business Consultancy, Legal and Advisory services, Govt. Special Economic Zones, Ports etc., require managers, who are specially trained for global integration and
innovation, for their international business. In India, it is observed that there is a lack of understanding on how specializations are different from a regular MBA, because they have not been positioned properly. The big corporate houses that recruit from the premier B-Schools might not have felt the need for a distinct MBA in International Business. But other large and mid-sized corporates may appreciate the fact that it requires an academic input and focus different from that of a regular MBA to nurture an IB professional. This is the area where the opportunities are plenty and would increase further in future. Though at the entry level the pay and perks do not differ significantly from that of a regular MBA, the scope for growth and the global opportunities an MBA (IB) get after 2 to 3 years are quite lucrative and commanding. They are future-ready to adapt to the changing economic order.
Preparation to Pursue the Field…. The candidate is required to cultivate a globally integrated mindset. Besides being patriotic, one should develop a global perspective while appraising any business alternative related to investment, sourcing, production, distribution, consumption, ownership, environment etc. This is because managers today operate not in enterprises, but in extended enterprises which run through several countries. Apart from the knowledge and skill earned while pursuing MBA(IB), a student has to possess a fair knowledge of the geo-political environment of the world, one foreign language (Spanish, French or Chinese) besides English and be prepared to work in any part of the world. Any graduate can aspire for an MBA (IB). Message to the Students… India is the 4th largest economy in the world and Indian incomes are set to triple in 20 years, according to international agencies. Industry now looks for managers who have three dimensional mindsets, viz., integrative, global, and innovative. Managers need to look at local problems to find solutions that are globally applicable and be innovative to sustain in the long run as technology and lifestyle-driven products and services become obsolete in no time. MBA (IB) develops this kind of three-dimensional mindset. General MBA programmes are designed to provide for thinking through functional chimneys and this kind of managerial thinking is counterproductive. However, some aspirants presume that it is necessary to pursue the regular MBA and top it up with a diploma in foreign trade or international business. Though this may sound logical, it is not practical going by the time and money spent on the MBA programme. These are the days of swift decisions and one cannot afford to lose time in acquiring skills and knowledge, else they would miss the bus. I also suggest that students need to be knowledgeoriented, than just placement-oriented while selecting B-Schools and management programmes. It is to be noted that one can gain entry to the corporate world on the strength of the brand of a B-School, but it is the knowledge and skill set that makes him/her remain competitive and progress faster in the long run. The organization does not give you time to update your knowledge, since your time is its money.
to deliver a talk on “India-China Relations: 60 Years of Cooperation in Economy & Business, Education and Culture”, Mr. Prasad Kariyawasam, High Commissioner for the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to India to deliver a talk on “Business and Investment Opportunities in Sri Lanka” and very soon Dr. D.V. Subba Rao, Governor, RBI, will deliver a lecture on “India and Global Financial Crisis: What have we learnt”. These interactions help students to understand thought processes of leaders in industry and government. Most important is 100% placement. Our students, who take pride in being associated with the School, are working in different parts of the world and the school operates with support from Industry and International Business schools in the world. At present GSIB is associated with Burgundy School of Business, Dijon, France, International University of Paris, Paris, France, and Beijing Normal University, Beijing, China.
GSIB distinct from others… The most distinctive features are its curriculum and delivery. The curriculum is designed to make students think globally in an integrated way and innovatively. Students take a number of integrated courses in International Business. These courses are taught by staff drawn from its own faculty, industry and the best of International Business Schools in India and abroad. Secondly, every year it creates a multi-cultural academic environment. Students from 18 to 22 states are taking advantage of these three MBA Programmes. This multicultural environment adds to the richness of learning. Students from Burgundy School of Business, Dijon, France spend a trimester with us, and our students go there to spend a trimester. The exchange arrangement is inexpensive and academically rich. The students get to interact with distinguished people in International Business who come to share their perspectives with faculty and students. For example; the School has invited Mr. Zhang Yan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to India
