VIZAG HYUNDAI XCENT HITS VIZAG ROADS Hyundai Xcent Car was launched in the Vizag market on April 5. ADCP Mr.K.Mahendra Patrudu unveiled the new car at Lakshmi Hyundai Showroom located on Rama Talkies Road. Deputy General Managers Mr.M. David Raju and Mr.M.V.Rama Rao explained the special features of the car. Petrol and diesel versions of the car are available in six attractive colours. While the diesel version gives a mileage of 24.4 kmpl, that of petrol gives 19.11 kmpl. Car engine can be started with a push button and the reverse camera is arranged in a mirror. ADCP handed over the keys to the rst purchaser of the car Prof.B.Prakash.

VIJAYAMMA VISITS TGR’S RESIDENCE Honoray president of YSRCP and the party’s candidate for Vizag Lok Sabha seat Mrs.Vijayamma paid a visit to the residence of former MLA and YSRCP observer of Vizag Parliamentary constituency Mr.Tippala Gurumurthy Reddy at Gajuwaka. BHARAT SENA PUTS BEST FOOT FORWARD The revolution has always been in the hands of the young. This time- tested factor was reestablished recently when Bharat Sena, a group of likeminded youth came out in a big way to hold a rally to create awareness about right to vote. A good number of people organized themselves into a pro-active group under the dynamic leadership of Vellanki Yagnesh Bharath. Vexed with the existing political system and the non-performing leaders, the group aims to motivate the educated youngsters to enter active politics. All out to plug the loopholes in the present system, Bharath insists, “Only common man can comprehend the hardships of his fellowmen. Hence leaders should be born out of them. Politics of heirarchy should not be tolerated any more. The pro-active participation of youth in politics is the need of the hour to bring about the much-needed change in society and better the lot of people. The rst step in this direction is people should understand the power of their vote and utilize it for the right representatives.” The huge rally taken out from Seethammadhara to Beach Road was the rst of Bharat Sena’s initiatives. Nearly 1,000 youth, most of them students and educated, took part in the rally holding placards with slogans written large and bold like - “Right to vote against caste, creed and religion”, “Think before you vote”, “Vote for the right person.” The rally got an overwhelming response with people joining it. Bharath thanked the participants for making the campaign a huge success and said that it set the tone for a new beginning.

VIZAG GRADUATION CEREMONY Teeny Boppers Playschool of Vizag celebrated its graduation and moving on ceremony for its pupils. Parents were invited to participate in the event. Children sang a song thanking their parents. V I Z A G ABBAI & BABAI When one talks of the leading political families of the region, the first name that comes to the fore is of course the Tippala family. Two members of the family have always been in the news for all good reasons - Gurumurthy Reddy, who had served as Municipal Chairman for two terms and as an MLA and Nagi Reddy who had proved himself as a successful corporator and was also seen as a potential Mayoral candidate. However, Nagi Reddy's contesting as an independent candidate against his own nephew Gurumurthy Reddy in 2009 election did not augur well for either of them. People too tried to widen the gap between the two. However, sinking their differences, both the leaders have now come together on a single political platform - YSRCP. People wondered how these two giants would share the space as both would seek the same seat. Putting a stop to these speculations, Gurumurthy Reddy had declared that he would step aside to give Nagi Reddy, the head of the family, a chance. He also extended his wholehearted support to his uncle. The bonhomie has brought in all round jubilation in the political circles. This gesture earned Gurumurthy Reddy a warm response from Nagi Reddy and a wide applause from the party men. Now the duo is being looked at as an invincible team that would not only lead the party to thumping success but also impact the upcoming corporation elections. The united family is going to play a very critical role in the city politics, assert political experts.

CONGRESS’ BUMPER OFFER At last only two people are left in the Congress party in Vizag. Dr .T.Subbarami Reddy and Dronamraju Srinivas, eulogized as the two eyes of the party, are forced to remain in the party as the former was chosen as Rajya Sabha MP and the latter enjoyed many party posts. Of course one fails to know how the two can run the party. When asked why they did not go their peers’ way, they replied that they would like to rejuvenate the party and bring to it its old glory. When stalwarts failed to bring back it on the right track, how can they do it? – is the million dollar question. PCC chief Raghuveera Reddy seems to have told the duo not to make any tall promises that the party would come back to power. There is a rumour that Congress even has gone to the extent of offering a seat in 2019 elections to those who come forward to contest in 2014 elections. It looks like there are no takers even for this offer and the duo seems to be repenting for having taken this task on their shoulders, fully aware of its futility.

ELATED BOTSA As PCC chief he neither brought any dramatic changes in the party nor did he make any efforts to salvage the s(t)inking ship. Workers feel that had Raghuveera Reddy been made the chief a year ago he would have perhaps saved the party. However, Botsa looked least bothered when the party’s reins were given to Raghu. He looks jubilant that he is rid of the post. . Though he is contesting as an MLA from Cheepurupalli, his prospects look bleak for the damage he has done to his constituency and for his role in the bifurcation. However the buzz is that neither Botsa nor any of his kin stands a chance.

BHEEMILI HERO OR A ZERO? Ganta Srinivasa Rao, who enjoyed the comforts of power as a Minister, is no more a formidable rival to anyone. Earlier the contenders were scared to face a ‘ministerial’ candidate in the electoral battle. Now they know it is just a cakewalk. Ganta’s ‘reputation’ of giving importance to personal agendas seems to precede him. His habit of switching loyalties, besides the recent incident involving his son, has tarnished his image. TDP senior leader Ayyannapatrudu has been opposing his entry, leave alone contesting. Of course he is given Bheemili ticket. Many contenders are showing interest to be fielded against him as they are ‘assured’ of a bumper majority. Even betting has started in the city over with what majority he will lose. If Ganta proves them wrong he will emerge a hero otherwise he will remain a big zero in politics.

STATE’S HOT LS SEAT

Vizag Lok Sabha is gaining significance with titans like Vijayamma of YSRCP and Hari Babu of BJP crossing swords at the hustings. The very fact that the bigwigs of the parties are testing their luck on this ground makes the seat extremely hot. It is also a known fact that the future of the seven MLAs in the region depends on this ‘lone’ MP. The seat gained importance as 3 to 4 lakh urbanites enrolled themselves as voters. For the past three elections, it is seen that the non-locals, with zero interest in the region, are getting elected and people are vexed with them and this whipped up a strong anti- non-local sentiment. Hoping to cash in on this, BJP has fielded a local leader. However, YSRCP circles feel that there is certainly a stronger sentiment created by the service and sacrifice of the late YSR and the region will certainly endorse Vijayamma’s candidature. It remains to be seen who will emerge victorious.

AMAR & ANAKAPALLE Straight from corporator to MP – this is nothing short of a miracle. YSRCP chose to field Amarnath, son of former Congress minister the late Gurunatha Rao from the Anakapalle Parliamentary constituency. (Amar, who was elected as a corporator from TDP for GVMC in 2006, has joined YSRCP.) The move came as a surprise as Jagan denied tickets to all the sitting MLAs who left the Congress to join him. A senior politician said to have played a pivotal role in bringing Amar on the scene. Some wonder why the party is taking such a risk by selecting a young man with practically no experience. Amar hopes his community (Kapu) will stand by him. By giving a massive mandate to Sabbam Hari, Anakapalle has proved that it prefers caste to calibre. This label is bound to get stuck if Amar wins the election.

MALLA’S MIND Former Congress MLA Malla Vijaya Prasad has switched his loyalties to YSRC expecting an MLA ticket. However, when he is denied that, Malla has come back, declaring that he would contest as an independent candidate from Visakha West. However, his well-wishers and men from both the Congress and YSRCP dissuaded Malla from doing so. Forget about his defeat, this move will definitely make a dent in the vote bank, hampering the prospects of contestants from the other parties too, argued some. Heeding their advice Malla changed his mind and is all set to support Ratnakar, the contesting YSRCP candidate. In return, Malla is well rewarded by Jagan with the post of YSRCP City President. The contented leader thinks that if he consolidates his position in the post, it may take him closer to more powerful Mayoral post. Meanwhile, his detractors feel that it is no way a shortcut to Mayoral chair and it may turn out to be a pipedream for Malla.

GREAT IMPORTANT VISAKHA MAYOR The race for the mayor’s seat of the GVMC is on, though it may not go to polls in near future, as the first citizen will wield unlimited power over the region. As a result parties that could not give LS and Assembly tickets to the aspirants are dangling the mayoral carrot before them. It is rumoured that the aspirant should be able to part with at least Rs 35 to Rs 50 crore to appease the corporators who will be electing him/her. Yet many aspirants are extracting promises from their party chiefs. It is said many biggies are eyeing the post. JAGAN SOLO PERFORMANCE There is always a nexus between films and politics. All major parties have taken advantage of the popularity of Tollywood Stars to pull crowds. As far as Jagan is concerned; the scene seems to be quite different, bereft of any filmy melodrama and star antics. One cannot but admire the guts and gumption of the YSRCP party chief who is not taking any glamour crutches and standing on his own feet. The only two star campaigners Jagan seems to be relying on are his mother Vijayamma and sister Sharmila. If Jagan emerges victorious, one point he is certain to prove is that a true politician needs no star campaigners to whip up mass hysteria and can run the show on his/her own.

POWER IN SHORT SUPPLY? The Power Star Pawan Kalyan made his appearance on the political scene in the lead role, unlike the earlier guest appearance in Mega brother’s PRP film. He did take the expectations of people and fans to a new high though he was not very clear in the launch speech, which only smacked of his ire against the ruling Congress Party. However, his second move of throwing his weight behind the BJP disappointed his supporters. However, they came to terms with the fact that he is supporting the BJP with a single objective of wiping out the Congress. But the BJP’s truck with the regional party TDP has certainly placed Pawan and his supporters in a spot as TDP is not able to establish its popularity. However, the star is ready to campaign for both the parties because besides his ‘wipe out Congress agenda,’ he has his own personal axe to grind. During the late YSR regime, the star is said to have faced many threats and pressures from the Congress men who wanted him to do their films. The actor’s desperation to fight Congress made them apprehensive of the intentions of the star. All those crowds that surged in support of Pawan seem to be taking a pause to wonder if Pawan is the Mr. Right to be given undivided support.

CHAMELEON KCR KCR looks like a chameleon of sort if one looks at his behavior at pre and post bifurcation. He said he would make a Dalit as chief minister if Telangana is materialized. Now he plans to ascend the throne himself. He who bragged that his family members were not eager to have ‘positions’, did a volte face and insists that his kin should reap benefits of their labour and deserve their just deserts. He even exhorted the party activists to extend their support for the same. Looks like, he is emulating Chandrababu and Jagan as far as bringing the kin into politics is concerned. Party circles argue that when he has already gone back on his promise of making a dalit the CM and never allowing the family rule, “How can we trust him and what is the guaranty that he would not change the party policies?” The cadres feel that when the party is about to assume power, it is mired in criticism and all these developments would adversely affect KCR.

PAID ARTISTE CHIRU Despite being dubbed as an opportunist and knowing the fact the Congress is in dire straits, Chiranjeevi girded his loins to bring back the party to power. He launched bus tour et al to rejuvenate the party. Leaders feel that though he knows that he will not become the chief minister and can go back to films, he took up the task of party’s canvassing. This certainly raises doubts about the star who demands his pound of flesh for whatever task he takes up. Are there mega bucks in this new mega endeavour? Earlier too it was said that he took lump sum amount to play the mute role in bifurcation episode. Paid artiste as he is, Chiru can play any role and deliver his best. If he shows the same enthusiasm if the party sits in Opposition and exhibits his leadership qualities then he can be branded as a true Congress leader and a man of ethics, opine his critics.

BABU INCURS CADRES’ WRATH TDP cadres are up in arms against the party’s supremo Chandrababu Naidu. They think he is going ‘astray’ to bring back the party to power. He is ready to give tickets to 16 out of 25 MP aspirants who ‘migrated’ to TDP from Congress. He wants to field them in 80% of the seats. If they win, most of the districts go into their hands and they may take advantage of the situation. They may even return to their parent party in 2019. Cadres are unable to digest Babu giving the ‘migrants’ oodles of boons. They also question the integrity of Babu who is at once criticising Congress and unrolling a red carpet to its leaders. They are ready to work only for the victory of their ‘own’ party leaders and not ‘others’ even if they come astride bicycles. An agitated Babu started interacting with the grassroot workers and is trying to convince them of the strategy. He is pleading with them to bear with him for the time being. How convinced will they be only time will reveal.

THE LEGENDARY ENTRY The much-awaited entry of film star Balakrishna’s into politics has become a reality with the star is all set to contest from Hindupur assembly constituency that sent his father NTR to the Assembly. Chandrababu seemed to have succumbed to the pressures of Balayya fans and supporters, The star is riding the crest of popularity delivering one blockbuster after the other and ‘politically’ correct dialogues. However, Balayya’s recent remarks that there was nothing wrong with his fans wanting to see him in the CM’s chair, have revealed that the star does nurse an ambition to make it to the top. If not the CM’s post, he is likely to get a plum portfolio. Nettled by this move, both Harikrishna and his son NTR jr may throw a spanner in Balayya’s (cycle) wheel. How will Balayya tackle the resistance from his own home ground is to be seen. Meanwhile, TDP cadre is elated that the party now has two star campaigners in its fold- Pawan Kalyan and Balayya. This certainly boosts the party’s prospects at the hustings.

YET TOO JP! Lok Satta Party president and former IAS officer Jayaprakash Narayan is going to contest from the Malkajgiri constituency for the Lok Sabha seat. His choosing of the constituency with seven Assembly segments, is welcomed as a smart move as nearly 65% of its electorate is from Seemandhra settlers. Moreover, the constituency draws people from all almost all the communities. JP is an iconic leader and known for his lofty principles. Though he might not have made much headway in the political arena, his ‘stand alone’ attitude is widely applauded. However, even his followers raised eyebrows over his plans to enter into "strategic alliance and tactical adjustments" with other parties and his naming BJP as a potential partner. People who are fed up with mind games politicians play talking of seat-sharing and ties-ups don’t certainly expect JP to tread the same path.

KIRAN’S CALCULATIONS Kiran Kumar Reddy floated Jai Samaikhandra Party. However, it does not fare well in both areas. Despite his publicity through channels, the result is zero and the party is in a pitiable state. Since there are no grassroot workers, even the leaders are not showing any interest to join the party. Kiran’s shying away from contesting is also sending negative signals in the party circles. The party chief’s explanation that he doesn’t want to contest as he has to keep himself free for the campaigning too is not palatable to the cadre. Meanwhile, Kiran is trying to keep his flock together. People feel that the new party is a damp squib as the seniors hoodwinked him and no newcomers are ready to jump on its bandwagon. In a nutshell his party lacks the charisma and looks likes an individual’s party.

NAMA MAKES NAME A recent Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) survey showed that out of 42 MPs in the State, public favours only 10. The marks were given on the basis of their performance and the service they have rendered to their constituency and the average shows a poor 2.5 out of 10. However, the survey gave a clean chit to Khammam MP Nama Nageswararao who had scored 7.7 points and stood first. The survey outcome has not only come handy for the aspiring candidate but also to his party TDP which is cashing in on it in every possible way. Flaunting the unique facility of its MP earning the accolades of a nationwide survey, TDP is seeking to send similar men of calibre and capacity to both State Assembly and Parliament. Created by Issam Trabelsi, the device is a ring that snaps around your index finger and allows you to call people. The waterproof device is made from soft silicone and flexible rubber and packed with the basic phone features. Notifications are made available through vibrations. The ergonomic design makes those tiny buttons easily accessible. The lightweight device can be taken along for a dip in the pool or kept wrapped around the finger. It is designed to suit fingers of varied dimensions. The only drawback is that it’s too easy to lose, while swimming in the water or jogging for example and it would be a pain to handle a mouse or keyboard with that thing on.

Meeting patients’ expectations is the toughest challenge

hile its presence in abundance can fetch you compliments, its absence can attract social ridicule which can kill one’s selfcondence. Any wild guess? It is hair and such is its importance. No one can deny its signicance, especially in a looksdriven age. Gone are the days one would make do with whatever they were bestowed with. If God hasn’t blessed you with it, fret not. Here you have Dr. Radha Rani Palakurthi, Chief Surgeon, Radha International Institute of Hair Transplant Surgery (RIIHT) who can end your mane woes. She is the rst doctor in India to have a fellowship in Hair Restoration from International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) and also to hold certication from the American Board for Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS). She is extremely self-effacing and humble. But she turns out to be highly articulate and eloquent once she starts talking of her unique profession. RECALL Radha grew up with a clear vision and had an ambition to become a doctor. She

was thoroughly inspired by her father the late Dr.P. Pardhasaradhi Rao, who was a paediatrician. “He was kindhearted, generous and very popular, especially among the poor. He was popularly known as the Piridi doctor as he was one of the rst medical ofcers posted in a PHC, at Piridi, near Bobbili,” recollects Radha. Although her father was posted in a rural area, he ensured that all his ve children got the best possible education, sending them to boarding schools. Her mother Mrs.Surya Nagamani also supported this thought. Thus, Radha landed in Vizag for her studies at the St.Joseph School when she was just six. To transform her dream into a reality she enrolled herself in a medical college. Unfortunately, her father fell seriously ill and he had to get his daughters married off at quite young ages. Fortunately, Radha was married into a family which was equally supportive and encouraged her to go ahead with her education. She completed her MBBS from the Andhra Medical College and went for specialization (Post graduation) in Dermatology.

TAKE-OFF Her medical journey began in 2001 when she started working as Senior Resident in Department of Dermato-Venereology, Andhra Medical College, King George Hospital, under one of the city’s legendary Dermatologists Dr.G.Raghurama Rao. In 2007, she received Advanced Dermatology Fellowship from the National Skin Centre (NSC), Singapore. “To excel was always my inner call. I never wanted to be either a follower or be the run-of-the-mill kind. When everybody was practising Clinical Dermatology, I realized I have a special air for the surgical aspects of it and felt hair transplant would be the right choice,” she explains. Soon Radha understood that there is a gulf between having a dream and realizing it and it could be quite a challenge to bridge it. Then she went in search of an institute which can train her in the desired subject. Despite travelling across India she could not nd any centre that could impart her the right training. red | may 2014 | 99

TURNING POINT Finally, in 2008, her search zeroed in on the world renowned DHT Clinic, Bangkok, Thailand, which is an International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery recognized centre. Her joining it proved to be the most important milestone in her life. She completed a one-year fellowship in Hair Restoration Surgery. She returned in 2009 and in the same year Radha International Institute of Hair Transplant Surgery (RIIHT) was born. Since then there is no looking back for her. In 2011, she got certied from the American Board for Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS) which reinforced her prole. FALL AND RISE Although she reached her desired destination, her journey cannot be described as smooth and hurdle-free. “When I went to Bangkok, as I was never away from home that long, there was a constant tussle going on within me. My heart and mind were in ght looking for answers to questions like- whether I was doing the right thing? How long would it take? Was I compromising on my other duties, as I had two young children. By that time, I was an established name in Vizag. There is a difference between learning something new as a teenager or a beginner and when you already have an identity. The only goal I set before myself was to do what I wanted professionally. My husband Dr. P. Murali Krishna (Head of the Department of Gastroenterology, KGH) and my children Raghuveer and Amukta stood by me. Little did she know that there were bigger challenges waiting for her in Bangkok. “I had to survive racism and gender discrimination too. I never felt that I was treated differently here only because I am a woman. But it was quite stark overseas. The senior doctors with whom I was working in hospitals often were of the opinion that women knew less. Hence it was difcult to acquire knowledge.”

CHANGES OBSERVED It took her 10 years to reach where she is today. She has observed the changing trends and succinctly sums them up in the following words. “A decade ago, there were only a few doctors in this eld in India. Many of them were not equipped to train. Things changed rapidly between 20092013. With more doctors entering the eld, the Association of Hair Transplant Surgeons, AHRS was formed. Now that things are streamlined, knowledge is easily accessible. On ipside a lot of private centres, including some spurious, mushroomed. Here, the authenticity or expertise of the persons involved is an issue of concern. Of course, unlike in other streams, the damage caused by quacks may not be fatal, but it can certainly destroy aesthetic looks. So, I appeal to people not to fall prey to such tricks. ABOUT HAIR TRANSPLANT Hair transplant surgery, also known as Follicular Unit Transplant is a daylong cutaneous surgery performed under local anaesthesia. Patient’s own hair is extracted from the back of the head and transplanted to the required area. Men with Male Pattern Hair Loss, women with Female Pattern Hair Loss are the common patients. It is also done for various other hair loss conditions that follow skin diseases, burns, trafc injuries and areas of prior skin grafting. It is an absolutely safe procedure with no complications. Hair is expected to grow back normally in ten months to one year. The transplanted hair needs no drugs and is more or less permanent. GREATEST CHALLENGE Meeting patients’ expectations is the toughest challenge, says Dr.Radha. When people are well informed, it becomes easier for the doctors to explain and offer a realistic picture. REWARDING “People think cosmetic surgery is a luxury. But, it is not so. It is the patient’s feedback which keeps me going. Hair makes a lot of difference in one’s appearance. It is sad yet true that people often pass nasty remarks about people with scanty hair or a bald head.” ADVICE If one has the desire and dedication, success cannot be far behind. LEISURE LOVE She loves to have time for herself. She likes art and craft and loves to drive. “Of late I am getting Sundays off. On this day, I get up early and try to do whatever extra I can do, like giving somebody a surprise visit,” Radha adds. FUTURE PLANS As long as her hand–eye coordination is good, she says she will continue in this eld. Knowing that things are fast changing in this eld, she keeps herself abreast of all the advances her stream is making. Whether it is technology or

infrastructure, she strives to make them available at her clinic. This year she started PRP treatments and hair transplant using FUE technique also. Talking about expansion she briefs, “I am really thankful that I have a good 15member team that understands me. I get a lot of calls asking me to open branches across India and abroad too. If I do it just for the sake of expanding without an efcient team, it will be nothing short of compromise on the quality. BUCKET LIST “When you are studying medicine, it is just books, books and books. Once you complete it, the struggle to carve your niche begins. I was one of them and haven’t done anything else. There is a lot to do. I like rie shooting, would like to take it up as a hobby during the later part of my life. I like cooking and would like to learn a musical instrument. I want to sit in the beach doing nothing. Let me make an honest confession, I really envy today’s generation, they are smarter and know how to work and enjoy life too.

t is often said that building a brand from the scratch is much easier than keeping the high-ying ag uttering in the sky. Yes, indeed the task can be daunting and a tough challenge even to the most experienced. If such a endeavour is taken up with considerable success by a woman that too in the maledominated industry, it is nothing less than a feat. We do have quite a few women who have been achieving it. But still the numbers are not that big to write home about. Out of those few numbers we chose to talk about Kavitha Reddi, Brand Consultant of Audi, who is creating waves and certainly broke the mold.Kavitha isn’t just a typical businesswoman, who was trained and gained knowledge in a single eld and entered the same to create a success chart that leaves many of her peers in envy. She had tested many waters and held varied positions in different industries before assuming the role of the Brand Consultant of Audi. The vast experience she amassed during her journey, has certainly added many interesting dimensions to her persona. Perhaps her prestigious lineage, as she comes from a family of intellectuals and leaders, has also added to her professional skills and helped her occupy pivotal positions all through her career. Here Kavitha shares some poignant experiences she has gained, ideologies she follows and the targets she is pursuing with us. EARLY LIFE AND FOUNDATION A native of Chittoor, Kavitha belongs to an illustrious family which has made great name in various elds like politics, education and business. Her mother Vijayalakshmi Reddi hails from the family of Sir Cattamanchi Ramalinga Reddy. Sir C.R.Reddy was a well-known educationist, intellectual, aristocrat and social democrat. Mrs.Vijayalakshmi graduated in psychology. While Kavitha inherits her intellectual genius from her mother, her business skills are certainly a gift from her father, Velkur Raghunath Reddi, a self-made man. “My dad had spearheaded the cooperative marketing and started many co-operative societies in and around Chittoor. Though he was never a face of politics, he used to inuence most of the constituency’s votes in Chittoor. People believed in him and recognized his good work. To be

specic, he was a kingmaker, rather than a politician,” she says. Recollecting the zeal and enthusiasm her father had for life, Kavitha fondly remembers, “He was a fantastic man, full of life. He had travelled widely around the world. He had imported bike and car even in those days. He was the rst to set up a radio manufacturing unit in Chittoor. “This German revolver I have here was originally owned by my dad. It is one of my prized possessions. Another such dear belonging is a Minox detective camera which was used in the James Bond movie. My father had it and he passed it on to me. I treasure all such antique items which were collected by him from various places all over the world and I feel fortunate to inherit them,” says Kavitha with justied pride. She grew up seeing many political leaders and stalwarts visiting her father, with the conversations always hovering around uplift of the rural strata. They used to mull on the ways and means like founding schools, ITIs and organizations such as agricultural cooperative societies, market yards, fruit pulp extraction units etc. In fact, her father was the rst to set up sales and service centres in Chittoor for agricultural implements, in collaboration with reputed industrial houses. He had also set up a manufacturing unit of transistor radios way back in 1970s. Exposed to such inspiring activities, her young mind imbibed values of high order. It is little wonder that she nurtured the dream of becoming a woman of substance and keeping up the rich legacy. SUPPORT AND SUCCESS Calling her parents as her greatest source of strength she says, “My dad gave me the freedom to choose my own destiny and my mom was the one who instilled values in my life.” Right from her childhood, she was a gogetter. She used to proactively participate in sports competitions. She took part in many national level tournaments in both basketball and badminton. Even in athletics, she was a national gold medallist. In selfdefense sports like Karate, she was a blue belt holder and was a gold medal winner in Taekwondo South Zone Tournament. “My dad used to tease me, saying, ‘Jack of all trades, but master of none’. I used to reply,

though in a lighter vein, “It is not about excelling, but experiencing the life of events which makes you a complete person.” She has truly lived up to her words. Looking at her prole one can witness a soaring graph of success. Explaining the factors that contributed to such a growth, she briefs, “All my actions till date direct towards achieving end results. I admit that I have made mistakes, but I have learnt from them, instead of crying over them or repeating them. I improved my performance as far as decisionmaking and planning are concerned.” Her husband Mr. Rajagopal, who is into construction industry and online gaming software and daughter Chetna (studying Law at OP Jindal University and runs her own NGO Nammika for girlchild) also encourage her in whatever she does, whether it is at home or at work. VERSATILITY Not restricting herself to a single genre, Kavita has always evinced interest in many elds. Even during her college days, classrooms could not contain her enthusiasm. She was actively involved in NCC and Gliding and the playground used to excite her more than the academic corridors. “People used to tease me that I come to college only for extra-curricular activities and not for studies,” recalls Kavitha. In later years, soon after she obtained her Masters degree in Business Administration, she ventured into entertainment industry. Here she tried her fortune by working on a concept called Fun Management in Kodaikanal. “At that point of time, ‘Fun Management’ was a subject at a nascent stage. But today is it is a fulledged industry by itself.” It was followed by her stint with the lm industry, where she worked as an Executive Producer for a couple of Telugu lms. She also worked on PERT Analysis and Time Management in this industry. She could not stay away from the exciting world of advertisement. She did a few advertisements on social campaigns such as Anti-Tobacco and AIDS. The year 2000 saw her venturing into the eld of real estate. Here too she set new records, completing as many as 38 projects. She is the Managing Director of VRR Infrastructure Developers. red | may 2014 | 103

AUTOMOBILE: A CONSCIOUS DECISION OR HAPPENED BY CHANCE? The eld of automobiles is a fast paced one and Kavitha always liked swiftness. Highly innovative and dynamic industry quite naturally engaged her interest. She started her automobile journey as the brand consultant for the luxury car giant Audi. “Each day we see new product launches, new customer scopes and perspectives. Every day starts with high adrenalin ow and ends with high level of personal satisfaction. There is no monotony, as each day is different from the previous day.”

INSPIRATION OR IDOL Her father has always been her inspiration and her hero. FUTURE PLANS Philanthropy runs in the family. Her parents, especially her father, have always encouraged her to help the needy. She wants to start an NGO. She wishes to give back to people of Chittoor, her native place.

“A dependable and supportive team is imperative to go through the daily grind of keeping the business running. Of course, the team at Audi is just wonderful and I am privileged to be a part of it.” AUTOMOBILES - PRIMARILY A MEN’S DOMAIN,’ DO YOU AGREE? “I have been a tomboy. Right from my childhood, I used to compete with boys. I ditched dolls and soft toys for Gilli-danda or cricket and even driving motor bikes; challenging my male friends. And most of the time, I was the winner and never thought anything would be beyond my limits, that too because I am a girl,” she says and asserts, “Women today are powerful like the Audi engines. When they have the keys, hold the steering, they can take everything under their control. They drive these wagons and reach the goal by themselves. Similarly in their lives, they know how to manoeuvre and reach their destination. They are independent, condent, and have all the freedom. In my view, there is nothing such as ‘Men’s eld or Domain’. I do not see any difference.” JOB SATISFACTION Now brand management has become a preferred subject in many top business schools. It is quite challenging and stimulating too. “I love my job and all the youngsters look up to my job as a dream job,” she adds with pride. MANAGING MULTI-TASKING She says, in today’s world, multi-tasking has become a necessity, be it at home or at ofce. She believes the ability to multi-task, however, comes naturally to every woman. They denitely have an advantage over men in this regard and she is no exception.

HOBBIES AND PASSION She is not just a full-time automobile professional. She loves to travel around the world. She has keen interest in adventure sports like gliding and has experienced its thrill many a time. Her unique passion list also includes shooting and she possesses a licensed revolver and goes to the shooting range for practice on a regular basis.

ou may have spotted this happy-go-lucky man vrooming away in his Opel at high but well-controlled speeds, walking or cycling on the beach road, trekking Kailasagiri or at a mundane pursuit like picking up vegetables and fruit at Rythu Bazaar (a highly skilled job, according to him). Don’t go by his nonchalant attitude because next time you are certain to nd him addressing the world intelligentsia from an international dais. His life and demeanour symbolise the essence of simplicity, dignity, character and conduct. He goes through life with Spartan discipline and resolute devotion to academics and commands respect in every circle he moves in. That is rather a simplistic way to describe a man who strode the scene of academics like a colossus and is now running the state’s most prestigious institution, Andhra University. Yet we try to offer at least a few glimpses of Vice-Chancellor Prof. G.S.N. Raju, notwithstanding the predicament over tting this giant in a few inches of magazine columns. If one has to dissect his persona, it has to be handled in three distinct angles – a world renowned academician, splendid sportsman and an ardent social worker. ACADEMICIAN Son of Mrs.Sitamma and Mr.Venkatarama Raju, Prof.Raju is the second child to pursue higher studies in the rst generation of the educated in the agricultural family from Undi near Bhimavaram, West Godavari district. His elder brother Prof. Krishnam Raju, was the role model for the young Raju who was blessed with tremendous grasping power. He was a topper with rare distinctions throughout his academic journey which was initiated at the Undi ZP school. Though equally passionate about sports, especially wrestling, missing school was never a part of his escapades. “I used to study the ensuing year’s courses in summer holidays to be ahead of my peers. Such was my passion for studies, especially maths. My mother, who was the real inspiration, used to wake me up at 3.30 am to study. The habit remains with me even today,” recollects Prof. Raju. Supported by his elder brother Prof. Krishnam Raj, he studied PUC in AVN College, Vizag. Though he got admission in all the branches of engineering, he chose Electronics and Communications as his major. Setting records he had glided through B.E., M.E and Ph.D with great elan, bagging every available merit scholarship. Prof.Raju joined Andhra University College of Engineering (AUCE) as a lecturer in 1979. Later, he held many important academic and administrative posts and rose to the position of the Vice-Chancellor. Prof.Raju published 340 technical papers, guided 30 research scholars, and authored several textbooks which are part of curricula in many prestigious institutions, including some in the US.

SPORTS-SAVVY During his student days, Prof.Raju was a weightlifter and bodybuilder, winner of the Mr.Andhra University title once and was declared as the best weightlifter for four years. He was also a long distance runner. Even now he devotes full two hours in the morning for walking or cycling. Recipient of several prestigious awards, Prof. Raju joined the league of legends like Jyothi Basu, receiving Mother Teresa International Award for service in Education recently. He considers that as the most valued moment of his life. SOCIAL WORKER He may not be doling out huge sums of money. But he generously imparts education to the youth to make them stand on their own feet. Hundreds of students are beneciaries of his largesse, some in the way of scholarships. The NSS units of the Andhra University are further motivated and bagged exalted awards under his stewardship and guidance. Unaffected by the power and glory that go with the ViceChancellorship, Prof.Raju emerges as a man easily approachable and highly articulate and discloses the secret of his ever-happy disposition. “Simple. I believe in my work and never covet posts and positions. Hence I am happy in any and every given space and situation.”

Being in teaching and research for the last 34 years in Andhra University, Prof. Raju has been adjudged the best faculty performer in the entire University with the performance index of 99.37%. He obtained CGPA of 10/10 – All branches topper in engineering rst year. Prof. Raju has been honoured with prestigious awards from several institutions. A few to mention are: State Best Teacher Award from the AP government (1999); Best Research Award (1994); National IETE Award(2005); Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Award for the Best Academician (2007); The National EMC Engineer of the Year Award ( 2008), Eminent Electronic and Communication Engineer( 2012) from Institution of Engineers (India); National Award for Teaching Excellence by Indus Foundation and Rashtriya Vikas Shiromani Award (2013); Mother Teresa International Award(2014) and ICON in Education (2014) from Governor of Rajasthan.

EXCERPTS Your take on changing faces of education and students I am not the one to lament over the changing scenario. In fact, I see a lot of positive developments in the eld of education that are propelled by new technologies. Only the modes and methods change while the basic concepts of learning and imparting knowledge remain the same. I accept the inevitable gap between generations and try to bridge it in the best possible way, without compromising on honesty and integrity. You have taken over a funds-strapped university, plagued with a lot of problems. How do you deal with it? I feel proud to occupy this chair of V-C, Andhra University in which great people like Dr. C.R. Reddy, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Prof. V S Krishna ‘ruled’ the varsity. It is a very humbling experience. Many stalwarts walked to success through its portals as students and teachers and many more will be doing so.

I believe in my work and never covet posts and positions.

Every assignment comes with its unique challenges. Without losing my equilibrium, I try to nd solutions and implement them to the best of my ability. I introduced 40 new courses and individual placement cells for each college. I have taken many measures like raising funds from alumni and roping in experts who volunteer to work without expecting remuneration. I made the campus free of caste politics. The internet facility is made available for every student on the campus. I set the ball rolling for a science incubation centre, which aims at bringing AU researchers addressing industrial needs and experts from all streams of sciences and engineering together. As a green measure, I declared 28th of every month as a novehicle day and I am happy that even the celebrities and other citizens are voluntarily supporting our move. Are you happy with the exam and evaluation systems? No system is ever awless. By and large AU has a very well organised system of examinations and evaluation.

How do you compare the age-old AU with the mushrooming universities like GITAM? Yes, there is no comparison at all. These deemed universities may have certain advantages which can be dubbed as mere cosmetic ones. Andhra University which is nearing its 100th year of existence has an edge over them in many respects. The University, one of the oldest and accredited by NAAC with 'A' grade has established an international image in academic excellence. When it comes to space and infrastructure, no one can come anywhere near us. Only problem we face is we don’t have adequate number of faculty. We are mulling over this and working out solutions to tide over this situation. I am sure everything will fall in place very soon. The deemed universities may go and advertise their lofty buildings,

impeccably laid landscapes and impressive placement gures. But we have beautiful heritage buildings with cent percent placements. What is your success mantra? Hard work, health, time management skills, punctuality and integrity. You can set your watch by my routine. My day begins at 3.30 am and ends at 10.00 pm. All the tasks taken up during my working hours are efciently and equally distributed to my three passions – academics, research and physical exercise. With a bit of determination, one can efciently juggle a lot of activities and never fall short of time. What is your passion? My uninching love for my alma mater. I have three mothers to revere and worship – one who gave birth to me, the second one that nourished me –my university and the third, my motherland which gave me place to live. Your negatives and positives? My plus points are health consciousness, time -management skills and my empathy for students. I don’t entertain any caste based issues and complaints of one group against the other. Nor do I encourage any particular section. My staff, teachers and especially my students repose immense faith in me as they know I am unbiased and fair in judgement. I am acknowledged as the most academic V-C. Only negative point is that I can’t devote adequate time for my family. What about bouquets and brickbats? Praises are unpalatable sugar-coated pills that make me uncomfortable. Constructive criticism is welcome but I have been so powerful right from the childhood that people hesitate to criticise me on my face. If they do it behind my back, I have no way to know who they are and what they say.

Had you not been in the field of education, what profession you would you have chosen? Certainly defence services. In fact, I was even selected for infantry. But I could not take it up as my parents differed at that time. Incidentally, the Central Government conferred on me an honorary rank – Colonel Commandant. Any mentors and your idol? My research guides at Kharagpur IIT– Prof. B.N.Das and Prof.Ajay Chakravarthy. My idol is Dr. Abdul Kalam. Any unfulfilled wish? Nothing. My only wish is to lead a healthy life till my last day on this earth. The best part of your job? Research and Development and teaching. What is your vision for the university? I want to get Central University status for AU. I hope by the next year it would be done. Politics entering campus: your take. Politics of any kind – whether it is internal or external – is not entertained. The student comes here with a certain purpose and should leave here with a degree in his hand. Politics is taught here as a science, not as a subject of manipulation. I may even introduce short term courses on politics and journalism to churn out genuine professionals. Is there anything you want to change about your life? I wish I was more focused and more target-driven. Of course, on the ipside, not being chained to targets gives me immense freedom to perform. r. Jayasudha, originally Sujatha Nidudavolu, is a name Tollywood is proud of. If you are looking out for reasons, then right here we can list a few – she has acted in 225 Telugu lms, had 24 lm releases in a single year, acted in a movie which director Dasari Narayana Rao named after her. Not restricted just to Telugu, her career spanned over Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi lms. Her acting skills fetched her huge accolades and she was complimented as the successor to the great Telugu actress Savithri. From Kalasagar Award, Filmfare, Pride of Indian Cinema Award, ANR Lifetime Achievement Award to numerous Nandi Awards – her list of accolades is endless. The magnicent woman is truly versatile. Along with her reel life, she has started her ‘real’ innings too, i.e. politics as an MLA from Secunderabad. With an amazing dress sense and style, though in her 50s, she looks absolutely stunning. Let’s hear of her life story as she goes down memory lane.

E X C E R P T S Films, how it happened? For my reel career I thank two veterans of this industry. First one is my aunt, actor and director Vijaya Nirmala, who made it to the Guinness Book of World Records as the rst female director for making the highest number of lms. The other one is my uncle, the Living Legend Superstar Krishna. I remember I used to accompany my aunt for her shootings. On the sets, there used to be fresh costumes and jewellery for each day, besides these, I was enamoured by her makeup and glamour. Quite often I used to do makeup to look as glamorous as she was. I developed a strong inclination towards lms. Observing it, my aunt offered me a role. Although, the rest of my family, including my mother Mrs. Joga Bai, agreed to it, my dad Mr. Ramesh, didn’t give his nod. He felt I was too young to get into this eld. Finally, she could convince him, he reluctantly agreed and I entered the lms with Pandantikapuram when I was 12 and I played daughter of Jamuna. Next break came in the form of two Tamil lms. One became a super hit and it drew the attention of Telugu directors. I debuted as a heroine in this industry with

Lakshmana Rekha. Jyothi proved to be the turning point in my career. Thus, from 1970 till today it has been 44 years since I am here. You are given the tag of Sahaja Naticredit of your acting skills goes to? It is a natural gift. There has been no mentor. However, I had muses like Jaya Bhaduri and Rekha to be more realistic in my performance. But it won’t be wrong to say that the inspiration was mutual, as there were many movies which I did in Telugu and they did in Hindi and vice versa. Like Jyothi was re-made as Mili and I acted in the Telugu version of Khoobsurat. Rekha once complimented me over the way I deliver my dialogues and said, “It couldn’t create the same effect when I did it in the Hindi version of the movie.” Follower or a trendsetter - what is your take? I always fall in the latter category. When I entered the Tollywood, the industry was making only commercial movies, where the stories used to revolve around the hero. I can proudly say, I broke the mould and with me the new era of making woman-oriented movies started. But let me tell you it was quite a task. Especially when you have contemporaries like Sridevi and Jayaprada, the former is sensuous and the latter is beautiful, taking up performance oriented roles without makeup to portray the Indian housewife needed courage. I am glad that I took the risk. Do you think you could take control of your life since you started quite young? In my childhood, I was a typical tomboy and the group leader. I used to feel and behave like a boy. When I was 10, I had friends 5-6 years older than me. I used to ride a bicycle and they used to follow me. That was the kind of freedom my father gave me. Yes, I did start my career at an early age, but when I was just 20, I made it a point not to work beyond 6.00 pm. The reasons were I never wanted to misuse the freedom which was at my discretion. Secondly, I felt working for long hours was taking a toll on me. I didn’t want that feeling of stress hit me mentally. Even today, if there is an excessive amount of pressure, which I feel I can’t handle, I leave it immediately. What were the major setbacks? Those days there were only one or two

publications and they had monopolized the market. Yellow journalism was rampant. For their own gain, many a time they used to publish false stories. Once or twice, I was also victimized. Even though they were rumors, the industry and people used to take them quite seriously. So they were capable of ruining one’s career. Fortunately, I survived them. Today we are ooded with various media, be it print or electronic. Such stories based on rumors have become routine for the media, may be in a polished way, calling them “gossips”. Now even if a star goes to jail, media telecasts how he/she is leading life in prison and trust me it doesn’t play down his/her reputation any more. A few of your memorable moments One is when I was hardly 18 and got the Filmfare award for Jyothi. Next was bagging Nandi Awards for Idi Katha Kaadu. Any retirement plan? Honestly speaking till date I have decided thrice to quit lm industry. Firstly, when I was 25 and got married, secondly, when I had kids and wanted to take care of them, and lastly when I got involved spiritually. But it is rightly said ‘Man proposes, God disposes!’ I took it as His will and movie has become a part of my life. I pick up stories as per my age, I will work till I am 80-90, if I live that long. (laughs) Conversion to Christianity, tell us something about it. I am a very religious person and I used to do a lot of poojas, but it was a miraculous incident that changed the course of my life. I don’t know how to swim. My husband and I went for a waterscooter ride in Bangkok. Not even half a kilometre from the beach, with a hit from another scooter I was thrown into the water and I just sank. Although I was very fond of Lord Venkateswara and Hanuman, since I had studied in a convent school I used to love Jesus. As I was drowning, I cried ‘Jesus!’ Till date, I get goosebumps whenever I narrate it. I saw Him, coming and rescuing me. What more do I need to be his follower? Philanthropy - do you believe in it? I am not extremely rich. But I feel to help others, one needn’t be rich. I founded SHINE Development Trust with an objective of providing medical assistance to the sick and poor children. money directly, but to the hospital which treats them. Mother Teresa has been my role model. If I contribute 1% of what she did, I will be a happy woman. Politics, did it happen by choice? I had been resisiting politics for a long time. In 2009 Dr.Y.S.Rajashekhara Reddy asked me to contest from Secunderabad in the byelection. But I refused it. He called me again for the same year’s general election. That was the phase when I started my spiritual journey and I was not prepared. I thought how could both gel. He convinced me saying, “As the way the lm industry is not bad, politics too is not bad. I can render service to people even in a better way.” I entered politics and I won. As a political leader what are your observations? Even after so many years of independence, people are still deprived of basic amenities. Corruption is deeprooted. Safety and security of women are the biggest challenges. Poverty is evident and in India the poor are becoming poorer, the rich richer. However, we shouldn’t wait for a messiah to come and rescue us. People should change, instead of blaming one another or the leaders and the government, as these corrupted leaders are chosen by the people. I follow and recommend a mantra for all of us “Ask not what your country did for you, but ask yourself what you did for your country!” Future Plans Movies will continue. Politics-I am contesting again, let’s hope I will win.

Jab you met? We met on the set of a movie by Dasari Narayana Rao. Nitin was working as the assistant director for the project. We fell in love and the North- South met. How was combination of the two states? My Hindi was and is still so bad. I can understand it, but don’t ask about speaking. I was born and raised in Chennai and nobody speaks or knows Hindi there. With him it was comfortable, as he knew Tamil and Telugu. At his home, English was my SOS. My mother-in-law picked it

up and we used to converse in monosyllables. However, Nitin and I never imposed our individual beliefs or rituals on each other. Even my both sons Nihar and Shreayan are poor in Hindi.In the initial years I used to observe Karwa Chauth. With busy schedule, I couldn’t do it anymore. But honestly speaking, it is very difcult, to keep fasting whole day, break it only after seeing the moon and the moon purposely plays truant with you that particular day. The most objectionable part was touching husband’s feet. I don’t buy the idea of “Pati Parameshwar”, for me he is my companion and friend. But at our home, we pay attention to small details like even food. Thus, while lunch is about Andhra cuisine, dinner is pure Punjabi delicacies. Positives and negative I am very poor at money matters. I can’t differentiate between a twenty rupee and a thousand rupee note, when they are folded. I trust people quite easily, at times I get cheated too. On the positive side, I don’t cry on any issue. I believe that God is with me, if one door closes another opens. To unwind Television is my best buddy and my programme menus include sports, news and cookery shows. I love cooking. I am a traditional Indian cook, not into baking or roasting.

TO IMPRESS YOU Food - I love food, especially Indian food. I eat both veg and nonveg food. Only thing, I am allergic to is eggs. I am also an emotional eater, thus whenever I am depressed I resort to a lot of dark chocolate. Funny moments For me movie was always a serious business. However, there were a lot of things I felt funny. Funniest ones were “saying I love you on screen to a person older than my father.” There was one solo shot, when the director asked me to act as if I was dreaming about the man and get that expression. I burst out of laughing, knowing how impossible it was. It took little time to adjust to such things which were trends in those days. Anything you would like to change about yourself? I wish I had enough willpower to work out every day, not to be too straightforward or open as at times honesty might land you in trouble.

SHE IS A BLESSING: NITIN KAPOOR At the outset, I would state that she is a true blessing for anyone fortunate enough to have been associated with her work or rather having been the benefactors of her seless benevolence. We have had a beautiful journey of more than three decades of togetherness. My reams of accolades for her individual achievements as an actor or as a social worker through her charities, and now in political ofce would not sufce in print. She has never been stuck to a script of the stereotypes in the conduct of her life. She is rather an antithesis thereof, and therein lays her success in various elds. She is very individualistic, honest, forthright and above all God fearing. She seeks divine blessings and guidance in whatever tasks she takes up. Once she is convinced that the path she is following is the right one, she is unstoppable. She believes in hard work and receives each appreciation as a blessing from God. Having keenly observed her commitment towards social causes of the needy, her indoctrination into political life was initiated by our dear departed leader Dr. Y. S. Rajasehkara Reddy gaaru by means of his noble advice for her to stand on a larger platform in her endeavor towards service of the people. In all facets of her life, her belief in a higher power of spiritual guidance is a remarkable revelation of her Conversations with God. At home she is a dedicated homemaker. As life partners we can’t imagine a day of being without each other.

SHREAYAN Like any other ordinary family, if we ever get time to travel together, we unwind. Otherwise, we try to watch TV or cook and catch up on our day. There are no secrets between us, we are quite openminded as a family and opinions are voiced quite generously. I can’t say enough about my mom, but to sum it up in a few words, she is by far the hardest working person I know of and yet never ceases to nd time for me everyday.

NIHAR Everyone asks me how it feels like to be a celebrity’'s son, especially someone who is popular among the younger generation as an on-screen mother? The answer is always the same. She is just any other Indian working mother; there is no drama at home, we cook, watch TV and also eat out or catch a movie whenever we can. As kids, my brother and I knew that she was a popular actress. We used to live in Chennai, where she was always travelling for work or wouldn’t get much attention from the public when we used to go out. So, life was a bit easygoing and carefree growing up. We moved to Hyderabad in 2004. It was after moving to Hyderabad that we realised how popular she was here. Initially I was a bit cautious because I didn’t want people to know who my mother was coz they would treat me differently, but it all fell into place eventually. HOLY SHRINES This state has Tantrik Shaktism, Shivaism and later Vaishnavism ourishing in its laps with people from different races, religions and cultures migrating to this place. Visit the Kamakhya Temple, it is the greatest shrine of tantric Shaktism, which attracts devotees from all over India. Since ancient times, a noted centre of study of astronomy and astrology, the Nabagraha Temple (temple of nine planets) also worth a visit. Located on the Sandhyachal Hill, Basisthashram is a famous holy shrine and a picnic

Look for its special varieties of rice like Komal Saul, Bao Dhan and Bora Saul. Currently it is in the tentative list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites.

SIVASAGAR This place is dotted with monuments of alluring architecture and houses Ranghar remains, Asia's largest amphitheatre constructed in 1746. It was the cultural playground of Ahom Swargadeos or Kings. Around, 14 km eastward from Sivasagar is the majestic Karenghar, which is a palace of seven stories – four above and three below the ground. MAJULI The treasures of Majuli, the largest riverine island in the world, are undoubtedly its Satras, which are Mahapuruxiya monasteries established by the great Bhakti Saints Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankardeva. Out of 65 satras, only 22 are left and the major ones are Dakhinpat, Garamurh, Auniati, Kamalabari, Benegenaati and Samaguri. The songs and dances like Borgeet Matiakhara, Jumora, Chali, Motua, Nande Bringee, Sutradhar, Ozapali, Apsara and others originated in these Satras. Its biodiversity is quite interesting. Majuli produces about a hundred different varieties of rice without using pesticides or fertilisers.

Bihu, Majuli Festival, Baishagu, Elephant Festival, Brahmaputra Beach Festival, Dehing Patkai Festival, Rongali Utsav, Bohaggiyo Bishu and Ambubashi are the local festivals. The tribals too have their own celebrations like Kherai Puja of the Bodos, Rangi Gobra and Harni Gobra of Dimasas, Baikhu and Pharkantis of the Rabhas etc. There are three Bihu festivals in Assam, Bohaag Bihu –celebrated during mid April, 'Maagh Bihu –during mid January and 'Kaati Bihu – mid October. The Bohag Bihu, also known as Rangali Bihu, is the main among three, which is celebrated as the Assamese New Year, with distinctive dances and songs. Akin to the enthusiasm of the snakeboat racing in Kerala are the boat races held during festive occasions at Hajo, Saulkuchi, Barpeta, Guwahati etc.

RIVER CRUISING Embark on one-of-its-kind river cruising, from Ninging to Dhubri, on Brahmaputra and its tributaries.

ANGLING Catch the tiger of the Himalayan Rivers, the erce Golden Mahseer, in the Jia Bhoroli River. An annual angling competition attracts anglers from all over the world. The other suggested rivers for angling, are Kapili and Manas. TREKKING, MOUNTAINEERING AND MOUNTAIN BIKING To enjoy the rst two, visit the popular Cachar and Karbi hills. The Elephant Rocks in the Morigaon district are also worth a mention for mountaineering lovers. But don’t forget to carry sun protection, as it is located at high altitudes. PARASCENDING Popularly known as parasailing, it can be done here, especially in the North Guwahati. You are towed by a specially designed parachute attached to the vehicle in the plains which gradually releases the parachute in the air.

WILDLIFE

KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK It is the rst and oldest national park in Assam and also a World Heritage site. Here the elephant grass grows up to a few metres, making it an ideal grazing ground and natural home for the famed one-horned rhinoceros, which were once on the brink of extinction. Today the park has more than one thousand rhinoceros. The other rare species found here are the Indian Bison, Sloth Bear, Leopard Cat, Jungle Cat, Hog Badger, Capped Langur, Hoolock Gibbon, Adjutant Stork, Ibis, Cormorant, Egret, Heron and Fishing Eagle. MANAS WILDLIFE SANCTUARY India’s most magnicent national park and a well known world heritage site this is the only sanctuary to implement Project Tiger in Assam. Situated on the banks of the Manas River at the foothills of the Himalayas, it is one of the densest, the wildest and least visited wildlife sanctuaries. Besides tigers, hispid hare, pigmy hog, golden langur, Asiatic buffalo, elephant, clouded leopard, Himalayan bear, swamp deer can be seen here. Every winter, hundreds of birds like river cats, forktails, cormorants, Ruddy Shelduck, and the Great Pied Hornbill migrate here. Take the elephant safari to have a look at the wild animals from close, yet safe range. One can also take a boatride on the river to view the fauna. Best period would be from November to April.

ORANG NATIONAL PARK Also called as a mini Kaziranga, it is spread over an area of 78.81 sq.km. One can spot fauna like pangolin, otters, wild boar, leopard, barking deer, green pigeon, orican, teal, cormorant, greylag goose, large whistling tea great adjutant stork etc. Other notable names are DibruSaikhowa National Park, Nameri National Park, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary etc.

On the role of MP To begin with I must comprehend my own role and responsibilities as a representative of the constituency. I should ‘fairly’ represent my people and protect their rights. I should be able to foresee the impending issues. Industries bring with them some inevitable problems. We have to be ready with solutions even before we plan an industry. On early journey I started as a casual tally clerk at 14 in JB Boda & Co, drawing Rs.8 per shift and working in two shifts. Then I obtained my degree studying in AVN night college. I left studying M.Com in night class at L.B. College after completing the rst year. On early career At the age of 19, I was the manager of a company called Jeena & Co, prior to which I was with Mr.Ronald Williams as an associate employee. During that time I learnt typing and shorthand and even used to drive a taxi. I value the dignity of labour and was ready for any job. Only thing I am incapable of doing is earning through unfair means.

It was 10.00 pm when we could nally catch Dr.Kambhampati Haribabu, who was engrossed in a deep discussion with a group of leaders surrounding him while yet another horde of partymen was hovering around to catch his attention. The lady of the house Dr. Jaya Sree was waiting at the dining table with a dinner ready to be served. He had just returned from a poll drive and was not sure when he would nd time to eat a morsel and sleep a wink. Yet a cool and composed Dr. Haribabu doesn’t betray any signs of fatigue or ill temper. He very patiently and painstakingly deals with each and every person seeking his attention. Dr. Haribabu is a self made man who dons many hats – a politician, an entrepreneur, a professor. Born in an agricultural family in Prakasam District, he was raised by his mother the late Mrs. Seethamma , after losing his father at a young age. He moved to the City of Destiny to pursue higher education in Andhra University and subsequently obtained a doctorate degree. He is also the founder of Coastal Corporation, a Seafood Processing and Export Company. He was drawn to social work at a young age, which led him to be the Student Union Secretary in the AU Engineering College. He was also actively involved in the separate Andhra agitation led by Jayaprakash Narayan and spent nine months in jail. He was the BJP’s general secretary for more than 15 years.

On educationist turning politician It is only an extension of my profession. In a classroom I was only teaching 30 to 40 students whereas in the Assembly I was educating the entire state on a particular issue, addressing a bigger classroom. I nd no difference in preparation too. I have to research and go to the very depths of the issue before I speak of it in public or in the House. When the AP Reorganisation Bill came into public domain, I studied it thoroughly and picked up the lacunae that would cause problems for Seemandhra. The onus of offering solutions to these problems lies with me. It is like nding a solution to a mathematics problem. Only I am teaching more students on various subjects.

EXCERPTS On his vision for the Constituency Vizag is the most important city in the residual Andhra Pradesh. Till now any graduate stepping out of college used to look towards Hyderabad for growth and employment. Within ve years I want the graduates coming from any district in the state to make Vizag their destination. That is how we have to develop Vizag as far as employment generation is concerned, in IT sector, tourism or large or small scale industries. Whether it is going to be political capital or not, it will certainly be the industrial, commercial, cultural and tourism capital of the state. Hyderabad vs Visakhapatnam Hyderabad’s Gachchibawli, Kondapur and Madhapur were like our present Madhurawada and Rushikonda. Within a span of ten years the IT boom had transformed these localities into a big hub. I want to transform the areas between the beach road to the national highway and MVP Colony to Bhimili into Kondapur and Madhapur of Vizag. Today IT exports from Hyderabad stand at Rs 62,000 cr., whereas from here it is only Rs.1,200 cr. I am discussing with IT companies and seeking their advice regarding what the new government has to do if we want to augment the Vizag IT exports and bring them on a par with Hyderabad.

Tourism can be promoted in a big way, offering inexpensive outing to people by creating both beach and hill resorts. Tourists can even go to Lambasingi to experience the cool climes and Temple tourism can be promoted. We can make the city a ne tourist destination and attract people from all over the world. That is one area has to be seriously considered. Economic growth naturally takes place in spots where ports and airports exist. Our city is blessed with both the facilities. On his contribution to city As an MLA, I was instrumental in resurrecting the Steel Plant which was on the brink of closure. We could get Rs.1330 cr- loan converted into equity and could give a fresh lease of life to the Plant. We got nearly Rs.192 cr sanctioned by the Government of India for the expansion of runway and night landing facility. Under the slum development Valmiki Ambedkar Awaas Yojna we have provided houses in Madhurawada to thousands of people. We also faced water scarcity during my tenure as an MLA. I convinced Chandrababu Naidu and set up a pumping station at Katheru and lifted Godavari water for the city. On regrets Regret is not for me. Whatever is given to me, I take it in my stride. Tomorrow if I win I shall look at it as a great opportunity to represent people and solve their problems. God forbid, if that doesn’t happen, I take it as God’s ordinance and continue to work for the party. Ten months ago I never thought I would contest elections. Political situation changed in such a way that I had to agree.

On bifurcation We got a new state with old name. Andhra people are a hardworking and enterprising lot. Moreover, they are goaded by a feeling of scorn that they were left with nothing. This will add an extra spring to their step towards progress. Take any area, it is our people who are in the forefront. Infra projects, Airports and Port construction- everywhere our men are seen at the helm. Even the lm industry is dominated by our stars. We need not lament the loss of Hyderabad. The concentrated development of Hyderabad is the only point that is irking people. Hence we have to focus on decentralised development. I also suggest decentralised district administration. In many states the number of revenue districts is more than Lok Sabha seats. In the newborn Andhra there are 25 LS seats and 13 revenue districts. This weakens the administration. Every constituency should have one MP, 7 MLAs and a district collector. The district administration should be restructured for better results. Though I don’t want to make Vizag another Hyderabad, I request the lm industry to look at Vizag as an alternative home, without closing shop at Hyderabad.

Success Mantra Hard work, understanding things, implementing them in the right way. I go about my duty without keeping an eye on the rewards. Had I planned something big for me, I would not have joined BJP in 1991 and worked for the party because at that time I didn’t expect that one day I would ght on the party ticket. No xed targets. I am ready to accept any responsibility that comes on my shoulder. I strive to fulll it to the best of my ability. Memorable moment Representing Visakhapatnam in the Assembly was a very proud moment for me. On facing Vijayamma of YSRCP Being the state president of BJP and in the context of BJP coming to power, people think that I will have more access to the Central Government. WIFE, DR. JAYA SREE I come from a family which was completely into politics. My father Mr.Ankineedu Prasada Rao was a minister in Charan Singh’s cabinet. When we were married Dr. Haribabu was not into politics, but I knew he was politically inclined even then. However, I am not interested in it. I render backend support and prefer it this way. I have a Ph.D degree and worked for a little while in a bank and university. We are blessed with two daughters Chetana and Chandana and Chetana has two children Arnina and Arnav. Our is a happy and closely-knit family.

CHETANA, DAUGHTER My dad is very idealistic, disciplined and a simple man with vision. He has charisma without airs and frills, a rare combination. He is open minded and educated, which again is a rare combination to be found in political circles. He is well-versed in various subjects and can coherently talk on a wide range of issues.

I have known Haribabu garu for the last two years. I have observed him more than I have interacted with him. He goes into this election as one of the most honest and committed politicians and that’s one of his main USPs for this election. He is well educated and knowledgeable, not only about politics and business, but in all elds. During my recent trips to Delhi, I had people come to me and mention about the effort and commitment he had shown during the tough times in the state over the last couple of months. He always talks about the potential of the state and what has to be done to make it a world class state. I feel that he is a great asset to the BJP and to the state of Seemandhra. His love for people is only seen to be believed. One day at 5.00 am there was a group of people at the doorstep from his constituency, complaining that there was no supply of water and power in their locality. He rushed to the ward immediately and saw to it that the supply was restored. A few days later when my mom complained there was no power and water at home around 7.00 am, he said, “Let us not disturb the workers till 10.00 am and bear with it till then.” Such was his devotion to his people and that was his order of priority.

eople, people and people were all over – right from the front gate to the backyard. In fact, the house was so chock-a-block with them that they even spilled over to the steep incline that leads to the sprawling mansion of former MLA and YSRCP candidate for the ensuing Assembly elections Karri Seetharam. The residence wears a festive look with party men and supporters hustling themselves with various errands. Amidst all the cacophony and chaos sits the master of the house talking, giving instructions, taking incessant phone calls and above all giving a patient hearing to the appealing locals. A glimpse of this scene itself is enough to show that he is an out and out people’s person who is closely attached to the grassroots. Despite and amid the milieu he even takes time off for an interview to express his condence that YSRCP will get that magic gure in the Assembly and that his own prospects as its MLA candidate from Bhimili are equally bright.

EXCERPTS Tell us a little about your initiation into politics. My family, though basically an agriculture and business based one, did have political links with my brothers involved in it, even though they did not make it very big in the eld. I feel it was God’s design that I should take over. Goddess Pydithalli is our family deity. We have an annual festival which used to be fraught with problems. In fact it was a trivial, though a very signicant incident that kindled political ambition in my heart. As part of the celebrations, our villagers used to indulge in a humble pastime of watching a movie and ofcials sometimes used to stop the show half way through and conscate the projector, citing some odd rules. I realised that I could ensure the smooth conduct of the festival without a hitch, if I had the required power and looked at politics as a good platform to earn that. I got elected as the Sarpanch of Adavivaram in 1996, and was the youngest to hold the post. I got re-elected in 2001. What were the tasks you had taken up as the Sarpanch? During those nine years I learnt a lot about the people and their problems in around the region. I implemented Rs.10.crore worth projects for the panchayat which houses the Simhadri Appanna Temple. When did you enter state politics? With the encouragement and at the behest of Gudivada Gurunadha Rao garu and Dronamraju Satyanarayana garu I contested from the Bhimili Assembly constituency in 2004 and won. Here the signicance of the Bhimili has to be talked about. The legendary NTR himself wanted to contest from Bhimili, the much-acknowledged TDP stronghold. Moreover, it was also the Kshatriya community dominated constituency that sent Ananda Gajapathi Raju to hustings. My well-wishers warned me not even to think of contesting from there. Some people even ridiculed me calling it a suicidal step. But I went ahead and with God’s grace I emerged victorious, reducing the customary 40,000 majority the TDP had been enjoying there till then. What are your achievements as an MLA? Under the able guidance of the late Dr.Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, I could successfully implement Rs.500 crore worth projects. The region was in a shambles with many of the villages not having even approach roads. It was waterstrapped. The generous YSR sanctioned Rs. 20 cr for the purpose and today the Bhimili people are enjoying pure water. Arogyasri, easy loans for DWCRA women, and 104 facility were some other schemes. How do you see your prospects? I am very condent that my people know me very well and they are fully with me. People are vexed with the non-local leaders who are on seasonal migrations to their constituencies and who have no clue of what is happening in the places they are expected to represent. This strong wind against non-locals is enough to ensure my victory. Moreover, people have seen me being part of their lives and know how concerned I am about their needs and welfare. People also want to have a representative who is their neighbour and who

could be instantly approached in case of any contingency, not someone who is at a long distance. Hence I am condent. What is the difference between you and your peers? I am not a hi-tech leader like others whom I describe as NRIs. Coming from and living among grassroots, I know exactly what is ailing my constituency and what measures will augur well for the residents. I am part of the society for more than three decades. Hence they repose faith in me. People who come from outside remain outsiders and can never get the feel of the local problems whereas I know the place as the palm of my hand. Moreover, I myself go through the same problems that my neighbours are going through. People like Mr. Ganta Srinivasa Rao keep changing constituencies so often that they cannot get down to the roots of the local problems. That is a certain advantage I enjoy. I practically know every man in the region and am on rst name equation with them. How do you explain Vijayamma, who is not a local, contesting from Visakhapatnam? Mrs.Vijayamma garu as wife of legendary Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy enjoys a statewide popularity. The fruits of Dr.YSR’s schemes are being enjoyed by everyone in the state as they are implemented statewide and also in Telangana. Moreover, it is a much-established fact that this region had a special place in the heart of the departed leader. I was told that Dr. Reddy whenever he returned from a tour to this region, used to tell Vijayamma garu that Visakhapatnam was the right place to settle after he retired

from politics. He loved the serenity and peace of the place besides its scenic beauty. This love of the YSR family for the region is enough to elect her from the region. We are very condent that Vijayamma garu will win with a phenomenal margin. We also for certain know she will be able to make the Delhi leaders hear the problems of the region and get plausible solutions for many long-pending issues. What is your take on demand for Bhimili merger? The rst task on my hand is to resist any move to merge Bhimili, which is a prestigious one as the oldest municipality. There are 25,000 families depending on the jute mills that is closed. I want to re-open that mills and give those families a fresh lease of life. What do you plan for Bhimili? Besides providing the basic amenities, I want to develop it as an industrial hub. Bhimili does have the potential of housing many industries with a vast land bank. Once it is industrially developed, it will generate tremendous employment opportunities for the local youth who are badly in need of livelihood.

Is it necessary to be in politics to work for people? Yes, we need to hold some post or the other not only to get the message across to the bureaucrats but also to get our demands met. Who is your mentor? Dronamraju Satyanarayana garu was my guide and philosopher who gave me life in politics. What do you think is the future of residual Andhra Pradesh? Jagan will come to power and the state will get back its lost sheen and glory. He will change the fate of the state --check school dropouts, increase old age pensions, set up market stabilisation fund for farmers, waive the loans of DWCRA groups. What is your plan for Visakhapatnam? The leaders, whether it is YSR or Chandrababu Naidu, developed Hyderabad and invested heavily in it. Now we have to think of a city that can be developed equally well. Visakhapatnam will be the City of Destiny for the state. Even our leader Mr.Jaganmohan Reddy is looking at Visakhapatnam as potential capital and I, along with likeminded people, will strive to achieve that. There cannot be a more suitable city to meet the capital demands. The city besides being well-connected has wonderful water resource which is a must to meet the requirements of a capital. What is your success mantra? I am very congenial and friendly. People love me because I am very open and polite with people. When people come to you the least we can give them is a patient hearing and my people know that I am a ready listener. Even if there are a number of groups with clashing interests, I go that extra mile to bring them together. I have my ngers on the pulse of the people and know how to treat them. What is your take on money play in politics? Unfortunately, it is true. Money plays a major role. But I can say for certain that my constituency people cannot be bought with money. If they come to me it is only out of love and respect for me. I'm a people’s person, very approachable. I love my people and it is amply reciprocated. I survived a near fatal accident. It is only because of the prayers of my people and blessings of Pydithalli, I am here alive and in action.

Who is your political heir? Neither I hope nor do I expect my children to go into politics as it is growing murkier by the day. DR. SWAMY, SON Invincible is the word that comes to my mind if I have to describe my father in one word as he even deed death in a nasty hit and run accident. Despite almost a debilitating setback in his health, he miraculously bounced back to life, that too after seven days in coma. As a medical doctor I know how painful it is for him even to walk a few steps in the condition he is in as one of his legs is fully reconstructed and is nothing but a bar of steel. But he is a man on mission and unstoppable.

Though both are not educated and come from agricultural and business background, they have earned name and fame to reckon with in the society. My father absolutely is clear about what he wants from life. Serving people and extending a helping hand to the needy are on the top of his priority list. He spares no efforts to do so. He is equally loving and caring about the welfare of our family members. He is a loving father.

He is totally dedicated to his people and 90 per cent of his earnings goes for their welfare, with the rest 10 percent used for us. Though he is powerful and rich, he brought us up like commoners. Hence his being in politics never came in the way of our education. I went into medical profession partly because it is my father’s ambition and partly because I saw many of our family members meeting pre-mature death. Though I admire my father’s grit and gumption, I don’t think I shall step into his shoes and prefer to serve people in my own way through my profession. My father too respects my sentiment.

DR. ARNUA, DAUGHTER Though not educated themselves, my parents know the value of education and always wanted us to pursue higher studies. They were ready to do any sacrice for it. We have a house of people 24/7 and all 365 days because of my father’s social and political commitments. It was only because this attitude and ambition of our parents both my brother and I could go for medicine. He is like a child. He can give his life for people who have done him a small favour. He is not the one to settle scores with his enemies or those who harm him. Today he is blessed because of his good nature. Though our marriage was arranged by the elders, it is as good as any love marriage as there is a great understanding between us. We have seen ups and downs and the worst period of our lives was the near fatal accident he met with. He was in the bed for nearly three years and had undergone seven major complicated surgeries. It was nothing short of a miracle and God’s grace that he is back on his feet. He started attending to business from his bed itself and slowly he built it up. Giving back to society, especially to the village we belong near Simhachalam was the intent behind his entry into politics. Despite his busy schedule he is a devoted husband and father. Since both of us are not adequately educated, we wanted our three children to go for higher studies. They too studied hard, staying in hostels. My son studied on his steam and never let us spend an extra penny on his studies. Our eldest daughter Renuka is happily married and son Swamy and second daughter Aruna are medical doctors. I have no regrets that my husband has hands too full to spend time with us. I myself contested the Panchayat president’s post when my husband reached MLA level. Though I was not successful, I realise the pressures of public life. Now leaving my husband to his people, who I know would take good care of him, I turned my attention to our cashew agency business.

EXCERPTS On the state of residual Andhra Pradesh Visakhapatnam will witness a remarkable change once the BJP comes to power. The party has chosen the right people for the right jobs. Now it is just a matter of time. Wait and watch. On problems plaguing Vizag The IT industry in the region is fraught with several problems that are coming in the way of its growth. The issue that needs immediate attention is denotication of IT SEZ. We have approached both the state and Central governments several times seeking solution. The denotication is necessary because as per the government stipulation the space should be used only by those companies that are allotted the land. No other company is supposed to use these precincts. Many companies from outside evince interest in setting up their operations here. To set up a company with an employment-potential of 500 people, a minimum of 40,000 to 50,000 sft building with parking facility is required. It is impossible to nd that kind of space in the city whereas there is vast space lying idle in the IT hills. The stringent and uncalled for SEZ policies are hampering the growth of industry. We are losing out on huge employment opportunities. We are asking for this facility only to create opportunities for jobseeking youth emerging out of innumerable colleges here. But neither the politicians nor the government is paying any heed. It is a terrible feeling that we are not able to do anything in this direction. This is only one of the many issues that need to be addressed. Hence I sought recourse in politics. As an industrialist I can only identify the problems but as a politician I will be vested with powers to solve them. I vow to bring in all the changes needed to put industry on the fast track. On Choosing BJP BJP is a national and highly disciplined party. Narendra Modi, with his positive attitude and innovative ideas, has created an indispensible niche for himself. He is going to be the next Prime Minister of the country. Gujarat too was short of power when he took over its reins. Thanks to his innovative ideas, it is power-surplus now. My mother Mrs.Venkata Narasu brought us up in a very humble way. I matriculated from Andhra University in 1976, securing state rank. I was a National Merit Scholarship holder throughout my education. I passed Intermediate from A.V.N. College in 1978 and B.E., Civil Engineering from Andhra University College of Engineering in 1983 with distinction. I joined my father in his construction company Sri Venkateswara Constructions in1983. Our landmark buildings are Vaibhav Mall,YMCA, Kala Nikethan, Chitralaya etc., besides the cricket stadium. I also diversied into IT company by establishing Nunet Technologies in 2002, providing employment for hundreds of people On his contribution to the City I am one Vizagite who has nothing but the city’s best interests at heart. Holding various posts and positions, I strove to serve the people in the best possible way. I held many honorary posts like President, Visakhapatnam District National Mazdoor Union (APSRTC); President, Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association (VDCA); President, Visakhapatnam - Rushikonda IT Park Association (RITPA); President, Vizag Development Council (VDC); Vice President, Visakhapatnam Air Travellers Association (VATA); General Council Member, Builders Association of India (BAI); Member, Visakhapatnam Airport Advisory Committee and General Secretary, Non Political Joint Action Committee (JAC) Visakhapatnam for the Samaikyandhra Movement. I want to rope in all the local MLAs and MPs, whichever party they belong to, in my endeavours. That becomes easier if a local leader like Mr.Haribabu is elected as an MP. On local factor The local leaders can identify the pressures and problems of the area and can efcaciously ght for their rights. I feel it is lack of interest in the leadership that is coming in the way of many issues. For example, our demand to relax coastal zone regulations is not met with. In fact, I came to know of this issue when I found myself in their shoes one day. I called former Union Minister Mrs.Purandeswari and apprised her of this problem and it was attended to. Memorable moments In Andhra University, in those days, they used to announce the names of the students who got the seats through a mike to the waiting candidates. I bagged the very rst seat of B. Pharmacy (though I did not take it up) and for the rst time in my life I heard my name being announced. That was the most memorable moment. hile almost all political bigwigs are in the fray for Vizag Assembly and Lok Sabha seats, an advocate from the city caught the electorate as well as politicos unawares by jumping onto the political bandwagon for the rst time. Mr.Patnayakuni Chandramouli is a noted criminal lawyer in the city. He is pitchforked into politics by none other than Lok Satta Party national president Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan. Mr. Mouli is contesting from Vizag South Assembly constituency and he is pitted against senior leaders like Mr.Dronamraju Srinivas (Cong), Mr.Kola Guruvulu (YSRCP) and Mr.Vasupalli Ganesh Kumar (TDP). Born and brought up in Visakhapatnam the young advocate studied law in NBM College and obtained master’s degree in Business Management from Andhra University. Though he hails from a family with political background, he was never involved in active politics. His being in the fray, though for the rst time, will denitely make a dent in the vote bank in the constituency. Since his election manifesto is very close to reality, the other contenders are bound to feel ‘uncomfortable’.

EXCERPTS Tell us about your life’s journey till now. I studied in Vivekananda Upper Primary School till Seventh Standard. After that I pursued my studies privately. My father Mr.Phaneendra Rao was with BJP for 25 years and was national council member for three terms. He worked as railway board member. He retired as District Resource Person in education department. I enrolled as an advocate in 2001 and started practising from 2005. What will be the fate of the residual Andhra Pradesh? The state suffered a huge loss. Colossal sums are required to establish a new

capital. It is going to be a herculean task. It will take considerable time to establish IIMs and IITs. What is your vision of the constituency if you are elected? A lot of shermen are in the constituency. Till today they are deprived of basic needs. When they go for hunting, they are at sea. There is no communication centre to monitor their whereabouts. Most of them are not trained enough to face perils and turn for help in crisis. They remain jobless during the breakup period, which compels them to go for loans. I want to set up a separate society for them that can lend them money with lesser interest. There is a need to insure their lives. I want to improve the sanitation. Everyone knows the fate of One Town area when the rain lashes. The entire area gets inundated, throwing trafc out of gear. Since most of the shopping

malls and theatres are concentrated in the south, it faces a lot of parking problems as most of the cellars are encroached. This needs urgent attention.
