lubbing beauty, fashion and décor together, S3 Lounge, opens its doors in Waltair Uplands. The name stands for the three friends-turned-partners of this place, Sunita (home decor), Sailaja (boutique) and Sheela (salon). The place looks quite posh under the master strokes of Sunita who is an Interior Designer and she has an array of products to offer. The very first space is dedicated to her genre of work. At display, are artifacts which include brass figurines, antique pieces (a few over 100 years old), paper mache items and amazing paintings. The nib paintings by a local artist are brilliant. She gives a platform to local talent to reach the potential customers to get value for their art. She also takes up interior designing assignment for residential and commercial projects and her USP is her speedy delivery. Sharing the same space, is the boutique which has saris and dress materials. Sailaja, the Fashion Designer has handpicked each of the fabric and her remarkable fashion designing can be seen in every piece which has its individuality. Her acumen lies in blending various kinds of fabrics striving for a seamless fusion. Sari range includes kota, jute, linen, crepe, georgette, pattu, super net etc. There are stunning imitation jewelry, mostly with detailed stone works. The third partner, Sheela, the Beauty Expert, hails from Kerala and has a lot to offer from the region’s famous Ayurvedic properties and Dhatri products. Yes, you have them all on her salon’s menu. Besides the regular beauty treatments, the highly recommended are hair treatments and body massage with Kottakal (Ayurvedic) oil.

Managing Partner of Surya Real
Estate Developers, looks more like a bureaucrat with his impeccable manners and earnest communication, than a realtor. The giveaway, of course, is his chic office with well demarcated spaces like a plush conference hall and smart chambers for various activities - where you find men bustling around. That is where we meet Mr. Reddy. He exemplifies the definition of the client-realtor relationship. "I am very self-effacing," the lawyer-turned-real estate developer confesses, as he slips into tales about his modest upbringing in a East Godavari village and his meteoric rise in property business in the City of Destination.

EXCERPTS Early life I hail from an agricultural family that belonged to Mahendravada in Anaparthi in East Godavari. My childhood was spent in the village along with five siblings in the care of my father Mr.Dwarampudi Venkata Reddy and mother Mrs.Lakshmikantham. I was the first one to go for education from our family. After obtaining M.A degree in History, I moved to Hyderabad in 1985 to prepare for civils. Despite best of my efforts, I could not crack the exam. However, my thirst for education was not quenched and I sailed with two feet in two boats, studying Law while I was running my business. Business call Though I belong to an agricultural family, my heart has been always with business. In May 1991, I moved to Vizag and oated Parameswari Finances along with a few friends. Not content with it, I ran a petrol bunk in Vizianagaram, besides taking four more bunks on lease. In 2006, my interest turned to real estate and I started my first venture taking a piece of land in Chippada , Bhimili mandal. Though started as a casual experiment, it was so successful that it spurred interest in me and Surya Real Estate Developers appeared on the horizon. It rose like the sun as the years progressed, filling many lives with light. We completed 15 ventures till now. Why Vizag and what are its plus and minus points? The city, with its natural beauty and cosmopolitan character, is attractive and close to my home. Moreover, I have a number of friends and well wishers here. Hence I made it my karma bhoomi. This is the perfect place especially for educated people. When it comes to the other aspects and to take an objective look at it, the cost of living is skyrocketing here, so also the land costs. It is very tough for new players to enter this arena. On positive side, its newly acquired status as Smart City, the ongoing industrial and tourism activities and introduction of world class facilities like top firms, organisations,
MY GOAL IS TO DEVELOP RELATIONSHIPS WITH CLIENTS THAT LAST A LIFETIME.
hotels and hospitals will certainly catapult the city to new heights. Why the name Surya Surya has been my favourite God, hence the name. Principles The simple principle on which I run my business is – ‘Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.’ I put myself in the customer’s shoes and ask myself – ‘Is this what I want?’ So I ensure the deals are absolutely fool-proof and documents error-free. First we get them transferred in our name before we put them up for the sale. The customer should not be the one to suffer. Advertisement My ventures are self-propagating. We never need to go for aggressive advertisement drives. It has been always either repeat customers or the referrals. Here is a sample record (he points out to a book of records). You will find substantiating documents for every transaction. The deals are transparent and incontestable. Hurdles Yes, we must admit there are innumerable issues and hurdles in this field. One need not be put off by them. The most important quality one has to acquire and develop here is alertness. One should be extremely vigilant. To those, who can put the finger right on
the spot of trouble, this field has a lot to offer. People who are greedy and go for unrealistic targets, are bound to face problems. The general perception that estate world is hassle-ridden may be true in other places but fortunately, Vizag is spared. Moreover, I cut my cloth according to my means. If at all I am fierce about one thing, it is my freedom and never shall I forego it for anything in the world. Preparedness When I came into the field, I know fully well of all the issues involved. Out of the umpteen number of issues one encounters here, over shooting the pre-set budget is the most common one. Our estimated cost always falls short of the ground reality, especially in the case of people like me who don’t compromise on quality of work. To offer the customer ready-to-build plots, the developer has to go through a pains-taking process of providing the entire infrastructure like BT roads, drainage, power and water supply and even greenery. Why one chooses Surya? We maintain absolute clarity in our documents and stick to quality work on the ground. I insist on the customers satisfaction and don’t mind forgoing a few bucks in the transaction. One reason the customer chooses us is our visibility and accessibility. He knows that we are permanently anchored here and he can always touch base with us.
Team We have a well trained marketing team. They have been with us right from the inception and I am sure they will continue forever.
questions. Of course, he may not be a Doubting Thomas, but certainly mulls pros and cons before he takes the plunge. He even goes to VUDA to verify if everything is in order or not.
New Trends in Vizag Right now the layouts are being sold. But, in another five years, it will be all ‘construction, construction and construction.’ The city will grow beyond the limits. It is directly proportional to population growth.
Requisition Procuring land itself is a big challenge and a risky proposition. We buy land spending a colossal amount of money and develop with the hope of finding takers. It is hard to predict if the developed plots would be sold as per one’s plan or not. If we come out unscathed, it is well and good, otherwise we have to grin and bear. That is the reason why I don’t go for big risks and take modest steps towards my goal. Every person I have the opportunity to work with, deserves honesty and integrity.
State divide The state bifurcation and announcement of Smart City led to a boom in the real estate market in and around the city. Sentiment I am not unduly apologetic about real estate eating into agricultural lands. because .... a) We are providing shelter to a lot more people and livelihood for hundreds of workers. b) Though we may occupy agricultural land, we don’t eat into fields that yield essential food grains. We use only dry lands (metta bhoomi). c) Moreover, all agri-lands are not suitable for construction. Other companies may go for indiscriminate usage of land for layouts. But I, on principle, shall not touch such fields. d) Finally, we need not fret as more and more land will come into cultivation. For example, the Polavaram project itself will bring thousands of acres of land under cultivation. Customer Profile Gone are the days when the customer used to repose blind faith in the realtor. Beginning from getting a toe-hold in it to get noticed in a sea of beauty outlets, could be a task even experienced might blink at. But young and enigmatic Madhoo has done all this and also talks of her work with conviction that belies her age. The lady is naturally beautiful, content and confident. Background My father M.Varaprasad Reddy hails from a family of landlords from Nellore. He initially took up his family profession, but later got into prawn culture. It was in 1999 he shifted to Vizag, when his brother-in-law, Dr.Kasu Prasad Reddy, renowned ophthalmologist, opened a branch of Maxivision Eye Super Specialty Hospital in the city. My father joined him as the Director. Originally Maxivision Hospital was established in Hyderabad and it was the first-of-its-kind to bring many revolutionary changes and turned out to be the country’s one of the leading eye care facilities. It became India's first LASIK centre as early as in the year 1996. With such unique features, it didn’t take much time for the Vizag branch to grow. In 2005 we introduced Lasik here and become the first one to offer it. We became popular as one of the most trusted brands offering a complete spectrum of vision care treatments.

‘He stands for what he stands on’-yes, that sums up the philosophy of Mr.T. Purna Chandra Rao, Managing Director, Bhoomatha Real Estates and Developers Pvt. Ltd. It is also easy to explain his passion for earth because whether as an agriculturist earlier or as a realtor now, he has always stayed firmly connected to it. What separate him from the typical realtor are his simplicity, people skills and friendly demeanour. He is soft in speech but firm in his actions. With a great understanding of local real estate, he not only emerges as a successful builder/contractor, but also as a very dynamic Vice-President of Andhra Pradesh Real Estate Developers Association (APREDA).

recipient of Padmasri, Central Sahitya Akademi award and now a Padma Bhushan, Dr.Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad, is widely acknowledged for his contribution towards enrichment of our literary traditions. He has put in relentless efforts towards promoting national integration through creative use of translating acknowledged works in Hindi and Telugu. Holder of doctoral degrees in both the languages, he was a chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Hindi Academy- an acknowledgment provided by the government of Andhra Pradesh as a leading academician. A Member of the Rajya Sabha, he was a Deputy Chairman of the prestigious Parliamentary Committee on Official Language as he rendered yeomen service to the cause of implementation of the official language policy of India. A regular attendee at the World Hindi Conferences since 1983, Dr.YLP has spoken in several national and international seminars on literature. Read on, to know more about this living legend…
EXCERPTS: Literature - his first love I believe in writing in tune with the current trends, especially on issues related to deprivation of women. The quote by Benjamin Franklin: If you should not be forgotten, as soon as you are dead and rotten, either write things worth reading or do things worth writing” sums up my feeling. My first love is teaching, second writing and third reading. After completing my tenure as MP, I went into a classroom of AU and started teaching for a decade. The political angle My entered politics during the Mulki agitation and I took active part in it along with M. Venkaiah Naidu and K.Haribabu. I was arrested under the MISA during Emergency. I later took active part in JP’s movement for purity in public life and was the district unit president of the Chhatra Sangarsh Committee. I had to choose between academics and politics. Being the eldest son of a large middle class family I decided to relegate politics to the backseat and joined as lecturer in Nandigama. The political phase resurfaced when I came in touch with the TDP founder NTR. I became his Hindi instructor and his son Harikrishna catapulted me to the Rajya Sabha in 1996. It was Hindi that got me a job and it was Hindi that put me in close contact with NTR and it was the same language that earned me a good name in Parliament. The family background I was born in Gudivada. My parents were teachers in the village school and grandmother too was a teacher. Hence teaching came to me naturally. I completed my education by giving tuitions. I obtained Doctorates in Hindi and Telugu from Andhra University.
The inspiration My father being a nationalist, Hindi literature was part of the culture at home. Further grooming happened at the temple, where the regular discourse of puranas and performances of Harikathas used to take place. The rhythmic chanting of slokas and the recitation of verses from the books of Hindi poets like Harivanshrai Bachchan and Premchand by my father at home inspired me to take up Hindi literature. At every point of my academic career
the books comprise biographies of noted poets like Bhairagi, C.Narayana Reddy and Tripuraneni Ramaswamy Chowdary and translation of works of Bezwada Gopala Reddy and C.Narasimha Rao. In Telugu I penned the biography of Jayaprakash Narayan and translated the biography of Harivanshrai Bachchan and works of many other authors. The highlight was the Telugu translation of Bisham Sahani’s novel ‘Tamas’ – which was completed in 22 days. Parliament tenure I earned the title of ‘Hindi man from South’ during my RS tenure. I was made the Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Official Language. I introduced a number of private bills like Hindu Marriage (Amendment) Bill to benefit women affected with epilepsy; Bill for Establishment of Permanent High Court Bench at Visakhapatnam to speed up justice to commoners; Marketing and other Facilities Bill to benefit farmers, especially mango-growers in Vizag and Vizianagaram; and Prohibition of Extravagant Expenditure in Marriages Bill. On aadhan-pradhan
I was motivated by my professors to write something worthwhile and from my PG days I started writing. Mastering two languages Telugu is my mother tongue. Hence the passion for it. For Hindi the credit goes to my father. I pursued Rashtrabhasha Praveen which is equivalent to B.A. Literary pursuits So far I have written over 32 books in Telugu and Hindi and over 100 articles in various newspapers. In Hindi some of
It was NTR who brought the Telugus on to the national map. Before that we were all called Madrasis in the north. The language, culture and literature had seen the golden era during his term. The literary forms like Avadhanam Prakriya and Padya Natakam were only present in Telugu and I felt that, by translating these literary works into Hindi, it would be appreciated by everyone across the country. Hindi is a main tank, from which other pipelines (the other languages in the country) can take it and translate it into their regional language. That is Pradhan – the act of giving Telugu to the nation, whereas aadhan – taking things from Hindi and translating it in Telugu. red | may 2016 | 51
Difficulties faced Barely any. When you’re a hard working, nothing seems difficult. Most unforgettable incident At 19, when I was translating the speeches of national leaders from Raj Narayan to George Fernandez and my tenure with NTR. Cherished moments I enjoyed being in classrooms teaching more than being in the RS. The Lok Nayak Literary Award Jnanpith Award is the highest literary award in the country but
IT IS DISHEARTENING TO NOTE THAT THOUGH WE TALK A LOT ABOUT CAPITAL AMRAVATI, THE VERY FOUNDATION STONE IS IN ENGLISH.
Is Telugu given its due today? The present government isn’t doing anything to promote the language. It is disheartening to see that we are talking about capital Amravati, but the very foundation stone is in English. Future plan When I was in the Central Hindi Committee, Atalji, the then PM, entrusted me with a job getting Hindi recognized in the UNO. Now my aim is to work on that. I also want to get Telugu declared as the official language in our state. Turning point Marrying Bujji – I call her that with love. I feel, I was like a stream owing down from the hills until I met her. It was only after marriage that I reached the plateaus and got settled in life. red | may 2016 | 52
unfortunately first we got it for Viswanatha Satyanarayana, then 18 years later we got for C.Narayana Reddy. It was after about two decades that we received it for Ravuri Bharadhwaja. That was when I thought why we were waiting for this long to get a lakh of rupees award. And inuenced by Bezawada Gopala Reddy, I instituted the Lok Nayak Literary Award in 2005. Since then, annually I have been awarding Rs.1.5 lakh to a deserving Telugu writer, on the death anniversary of NTR in Vizag. IN BRIEF: Changes in you over the years I was an angry young man. Now a mature man, so I believe at least. What is your success mantra? Hard work What is the secret to a happy life? The only thing is I am not a greedy man. One can cater the needs of the needy, but not to that of a greedy person. Favourite among yourworks? Draupadi Who is your idol? Moturi Satyanarayana. He was 6 when
he left his district and went to the north. He was very close to Rajendra Prasad. Once Gandhi ji even commented that the language he spoke was the real Hindi. He was a Rajya Sabha member and a writer, and also a Padma Bhushan awardee. Your favourite author/poet ? Aluri Bairagi and C.Narayana Reddy. What are your hobbies? Reading, writing and spending time with friends over good food. How do you like to spend your time? By reading books and hearing poetry. Otherwise you will find me listening to old Telugu songs. One thing you would like to change about yourself? I am an emotional man, I wish I could be more practical. Your happiest moment? It was on my 60th birthday, when I was in Toronto. My friends wanted to perform my Shastipurthi and I refused and left for Detroit. I spent the birthday with my granddaughter – there were no people, no cakes and no celebrations. What makes you sad? Jealous people and their remarks. Negative things upset me for a few moments, but then I bounce back with redoubled force. What makes you angry? I only get angry with the people who are close to my heart. If there is something they have agreed to do and do not live up to their word - I get angry. Any regrets? None whatsoever. If you could rewind and relive a part of your life differently… I would live each and every day exactly the same way. What is your definition of relaxation? Playing cards with my wife Sowjanya.
FAMILY CORNER About the family… My son Sivaram and his wife Punya lives in Detroit. He has a daughter Smaya, who is all of 3.5 years – she is my love. My daughter Sahiti, is in Cincinnati pursuing her masters. HIS CHOICE: Colour: White Attire: Dhoti and kurta Brand: I’m not a branded person Car: I don’t know any… I love autos! Place: London and Delhi Food: Fish Movie: NTR’s Sri Krishna Pandaveeyam Actor: N. T. Rama Rao Actress: Savitri and Jayapradha Sport: I used to play shuttlecock earlier Holiday destination: London HE IS GODS GIFT TO ME: SOWJANYA How did the two of you meet? Since it was an arranged marriage, we did not meet before we tied the
knot. Believe it or not, the first time I saw him was when he was sitting in the marriage mandap across me. How would you rate him as a father, grandfather and husband? He is everything that I could have asked for. He has been a perfect husband, father and now is at his best as a grandfather. I’d give him a 100/100 as a father and husband, and a 110/100 for the granddad that he is. What was your reaction to him joining politics? He was already in politics before we met. How would you describe him in a few words? My husband is just like the Ugadi Pachhadi – full of various avours like sweet, sour, pungent and bitter. I WISH I COULD BE LIKE HIM: SIVARAM What kind of bond do you share with your father? My father is now my best friend. He is extremely caring and open minded – making it easier to share and discuss almost everything with him. He inspires
me to give the best. How does he guide you? He is the first person for me to look up to whenever I need some guidance. He is the perfect example of a person who has handled everything in the calmest way, teaching me how to handle stress in a pleasant and personable way. He is the reason for me to believe in the quote "when all else fails, call Dad". One trait of his you wish you had... He has a lot of positive energy. He travels a lot. He works so hard yet he is always fresh and enthusiastic to jump in to the next task. I wish I had his energy level and enthusiasm. He lives each day as a brand new day. Your most special moments with him Coming to think of it, there are so many! In fact, to be honest, every minute that I have spent or spend with him, is extremely special.

What followed after? As my father is with Air Force, we moved from one place to another frequently. This is how I landed in Hyderabad. I am not the kind who would sit idle. Coincidently, around the same time I came across Sutradhar Theatre Group and got connected to Vinay Varma. He asked me to help them with backstage and I took it up. Surprisingly, within a few days he asked me to essay a role in a very famous Marathi play called Natsamrat, which was translated into Hindi. Thus began my journey as a theatre actor.
How did acting happen? My career started in Mumbai by working with Go-Air. While ying as a part of cabin-crew, I used to get few offers to work in movies and serials. However, I never took any of them seriously. Once I left the job, I contacted those people and that is how I signed my first Hindi movie. Unfortunately, I had to leave it.

Hailing from the Air Force background, this lasso naturally has discipline as the guiding mantra of her life. Acting is a serious business for her. It can be observed from the thoughtprovoking plays she has chosen to act. The young talent is here sharing her experience and her upcoming projects that include films.

THE LUMINOUS
Turning point in your career? I would say it was Ji Jaisi Aap Ki Marzi, a women-oriented play. It has given me immense confidence as an actor. It was a monologue, by the time I was about to finish it, the audience started applauding and gave me a standing ovation. That was the first time I got emotional.
Tell us about a few outstanding plays you have done. The most notable ones are Natsamrat, Ji Jaisi Aapki Marzi (Nadira Babbar's play) and Pinki Virani's Bitter Chocolate.

Bitter Chocolate is quite soul stirring, tell us about your experience working in it. The thought of Bitter Chocolate still gives me goosebumps. The play revolves around stories of sexually abused children in our country. We had to narrate each story one by one. They are case studies. While performing, it was getting tougher for me to hide tears. I observed that even the audience were teary eyed. The reason behind its success was simple narration sans any drama. It was quite challenging.

Future projects… I have taken up projects with UTV and PVP. There are a few more big projects, besides webseries, names of which I can’t divulge now.
Dream role… The list is long but it is basically dark subjects. Rudaali is one of them. I would also love to be a part of defense movies.
The best compliment so far…. Someone told me my eyes take care 70% of my performance. I was also commended as a natural actor.
What is the short film about? Ram Gopal Varma name itself is enough. Gulaabjamun is a horror film RGV’s YouTube channel, RGV Talkies. It is his script and directed by Santosh Mohan. Shyam Prasad is cinematographer. The entire team is fabulous.
Your strengths as an actor? Perseverance and honesty! I have been very focused on my goal. Most challenging and favourite. Since it is just the beginning and whatever I did till now was for the first time, it was challenging. Favourite one is yet to come.
theatre, hence, we rehearse a lot. I try to do same in films too. It saves time and energy. I feel, theatre polishes and grooms us and keeps us down to earth. It offers a lot to us to evolve as an actor and as a person as well. Yes you will see me on a short film soon.

You debuted with Thirumanam Enum Nikkah - a Tamil movie, then how did you turn to Tollywood? It wasn’t planned. After my first film
Modelling and acting- which one is more challenging? Obviously acting is more challenging.
Hailing from Mumbai how did you land in Tollywood? In a way I decided if at all I have to get into film industry, I would enter Tollywood (South Indian Film Industry). I idolize Genelia a lot and she always speaks high of Tollywood and prefers it to Bollywood. This created a keen interest in me too for this industry and here I am.
Why modelling? Because I feel modelling is easy and there is not much hard work. Moreover the skills come to me naturally.
You started your career as model. Was acting a natural fallout? It happened by luck, I didn’t plan anything. I got an opportunity to act and I just took it.
Tell us something about your family! I was born and brought up in Mumbai. I lived there with my mom and sisters and aunts. All women power! Other than me, my family has no connection to Bollywood, Tollywood or acting at all. I was the first one to take up this career, but thankfully, my family has been very supportive in my decision.
How do you manage the language? I have been a very good student with great grasping power. By now I have got hold of almost 70% of Telugu. Though I can’t speak uently, I can understand it. By interacting or trying
Among all the three industries which has been toughest or fun to work in? Tollywood has been tough and fun at the same time.
You also worked in Kannada film Adyaksha, what made you venture into that industry? As mentioned earlier, initially I never used to look at them as Kannada or Telugu movies. It was just another South-Indian movie. I liked the storyline and signed it.
Ala Ela earned you critical acclaim, can you share your experience of the movie? What made it a super hit? I think the director was confident of the script and was absolutely clear about what he wanted from the actors. It goes without saying that the team was excellent. All put together it catapulted the film to a thumping success. I feel elated.
which was a Tamil one, I was approached for Ala Ela which was a Telugu movie. Pardon me, until then my idea was - there is only one SouthIndian film industry. I didn’t know that there are different industries like Kollywood, Sandalwood, Tollywood etc. For me it was just about doing movies!

To be honest, after watching the movie, audience didn’t feel that there was really something bold though they came with some pre-conceived notions. I would also like to add that the lip-locks in Kumari went with the storyline and they were not included randomly. So I understood the demand and did them. Having said that, I would also like to clarify that I won’t do anything steamy just for the heck of it. I am not okay with skin show or all of that.
Are you comfortable with steamy roles? Your lip-locks in Kumari.. were considered bold.
Can you call Kumari 21F as the turning point in your career? What made you select this movie? I think Kumari 21F is the turning point not just in my career but in my life. I signed Kumari… before Ala Ela was released. I didn’t have the slightest hint that it would be such a big blockbuster. I signed it because that was the first thing that came my way. I was getting the opportunity to play the lead role under the banner Sukumar Writings P.A. Motion Pictures and guidance of director Palnati Surya Pratap and producer Sukumar. I took it up without giving it a second thought.
to follow the crew on the sets or the make-up artists, I have picked up a fair amount of the language.

Most memorable compliment After the release of Kumari… the director said the girl in the movie is me and no one could have portrayed it better than me. Most awkward moment I have them almost every day. If you have to flaunt your beauty, you would dress in? Jeans and T shirt. A place in Hyderabad you love to hang out Chutneys and Beyond Coffee! What are your dream roles? I have dream directors and actors, not dream roles.
Are you planning to try Bollywood too? No plans for Bollywood as of now. I am pretty pre-occupied with Tollywood at the moment. Honestly speaking, I really don’t plan things much, rather go with natural ow of incidence.
What kind of roles interests you the most? I don’t have any such set prerequisites. In movies, certain things work out commercially and some others fetch good mileage to the character. I take a lot of things into consideration, not just my role as such. I HAVE DREAM DIRECTORS AND Which co-star you ACTORS, NOT DREAM ROLES. enjoyed the most acting with? Why? I acted with two actors so far. I spent more time with Raj obviously and I know him better. But I enjoyed working with Rahul more, he is a thorough gentleman. Given a chance I would like to work with Rahul again.
Which has been the most challenging role so far? I would say it was Ala Ela. Reason being, that time I didn’t even have hold on the language, I wasn’t aware fully how to face the camera properly. Kumari... became little easier, as by then I was trained a bit.
Eedo Rakam Aado Rakam- how was the experience? Kumari was exhausting, as the shooting went on almost for a year. Eedo Rakam Aado Rakam came as a good break. We started the shoot by December and wrapped it by March. It was like a much deserved holiday. The role was kind of a cakewalk, as it didn’t demand a lot from me as an actor.

f it’s variety in food that you are looking for, then Sawa Reloaded has three types of cuisine that lie close to the hearts of many foodies. As a true multi-cuisine restaurant, which specializes in Indian, Chinese and continental food, this eatery opened its doors on April 21. Located in Banjara Hills on Road No 10, it is designed largely in a contemporary style with a touch of fusion. Without being ostentatious or overly lavish, the restaurant is set in a casual theme and can easily accommodate up to 400 people. With a well-balanced, comfortable seating arrangement and spread over three oors, it offers enough room for privacy, without feeling completely isolated from the rest of the guests. The variety in the a la carte menu practically guarantees an excellent dining experience for both lunch and dinner. Ayub Sohail, Anuroop Reddy, Wahaj Quadri and Sonali Sharma, owners claim that each dish is specially planned with mesmerizing avours that leave the guests asking for more. Live music and ample parking space are two other plus points that Sawa Reloaded has. They have a section with an open garden seating, for all those who would prefer fresh air while catching up with friends, whereas for larger groups or parties, they also have a private section on the top. It is a perfect pick for kitties, parties and other kinds of celebrations, thanks to their warm hospitality and friendly staff. Whether it’s for some yummy Chinese avors, a fancy Continental dish or any type of Indian curry, Sawa Reloaded can take you from hungry to happy.

MODERNIST
Getting into designing Destiny got me into the field of design. As a kid I used to love making sketches and pricing them for my mom, who was among the first few designers in Hyderabad, but at that time never knew that this would be my profession one day. Post my Class 12, I was to write the entrance for medicine, in which I excelled. Yet I knew that design is my passion. Today I breathe fashion. The journey so far (Sigh) It has been a rise and fall, good and bad but the one thing that always makes me smile is that I have never given up. My journey in the field of fashion started with my entry into the most prestigious fashion institute, where my skills were honed by the best faculty. My course co-ordinator Mr. Sanjay Shrivastav had always been the guiding force. While I was a student I had started having exhibitions to showcase my work. I also started writing articles on fashion for newspapers and magazines. I had done a photo shoot for one of the leading newspapers for a Christmas issue with Genelia Deshmukh. After that I entered the film industry with designing for most of Genelia’s Tollywood movies. I have worked with almost all the leading stars in the industry and it has been an experience of a lifetime. Biggest achievement The Confederation of Indian Apparel Exporters had honoured me with an award. I am the first Indian to have won it. So certainly it was a moment of great pride and honour. The most special piece This sure is the one that I designed for Genelia as a showstopper at the first Chennai International Fashion Week that I had participated in. The dress was made with over 50 meters of fabric! The inspiration We are in a country which is rich in culture and heritage and this inspires me to create the new from the old of
various regions of India. Antiques have always been an element in my design in ways of fabric, colour and embroidery. The USP My premise of doing business is the same as the values my mother raised me with – sensitivity, empathy and honesty. That is how I manage to find balance in an extremely competitive business. I have a plan chalked outmake fashion real and get people to be stylish regardless of the body type. I think that once people have invested heavily in clothes, they shouldn’t
including several “youngest” firsts. I am one of the few designers to have done over ten fashion weeks across South India and numerous fashion shows for charitable causes. I have worked with top actors like Genelia, Charmme, Mamta Mohandas, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menon, Shraddha Das, Kamna Jethmalani, Deeksha Seth and Nitin. The love and support I get from my friends here is immense. The biggest compliment was to go back to my alma mater to teach fashion and be part of the jury at the graduation of the NIFT fashion design class.
Retail Plans I believe THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR A DESIGNER in doing IS TO MAKE INDIAN PEOPLE CONNECT exclusive WITH INDIAN FABRICS AND MAKING THEM clothing PROUD OF THEIR HERITAGE. for my clients for a feel-good factor. So, when I design, I keep in mind the customer’s specifications. That way it is more on a made-to-order basis and to keep the exclusivity of each garment. Retail, I feel, is a totally different line all-together. If all goes the way it has been planned, then, by the grace of God I am going to venture into it by the end of this year maybe.
discard them because they go out of fashion. Thanks to my time at NIFT, I know how to de-construct and reconstruct fresh garments. This is my USP. To introduce a trend each year and become known for it is what I focus on. There are several challenges ahead that I am eager to face and learn from. Didn’t Malcolm Gladwell say that it takes around 10,000 hours to become an expert?
From an idea to a garment In any creative field, an inspiration is the start of any design process. That further leads to a concept and then a mood. Which is followed by the season you are catering to – and that, of course, leads to the colour story and design of the garment. Once it has been conceptualized the way you want it, bringing it to reality isn’t difficult. Material comfort Handlooms, cottons, khadis and jutes have always been my favourite; love the texture and the nature of the fabrics.
The accomplishments I have received many accolades at national and international levels, red | may 2016 | 37
Future plans To revive the dying and fading handlooms and providing employment for women in villages who don’t even have enough to procure necessities. Hyderabad’s response Awareness about the latest fashion trends is something that is making Hyderabad a fashion conscious city. The market is now very much in sync with the capital, with more nationally acclaimed designers capturing the market.
The support system My support system has always been my family, my mom, dad and sister, now for the last two years my husband, too. Because of them I am what I am today. They render tremendous support and guide me to excel in my work. They have been encouragement
What is the trait you deplore in yourself? Being emotional On what occasion do you lie? No lying (wink wink) Your greatest wish… To be an Indian known for her work and uniqueness in design globally Favourite holiday destination Maldives HER THOUGHTS: • Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery today is what you have so make the most of it and cherish each moment as it will never come back. • Life is a story, make yours the bestseller • The creation of an environment for women where they can make
If not this, you would be… If I wasn’t a fashion designer, I would have definitely been a filmmaker! I have always loved to watch movies and am extremely passionate about script writing, direction and the way how all creative people come together. Even the way so many minds make a storyline is something that has always fascinated me. More about yourself I am a person who believes in starting each day afresh and with positivity. I love driving and listening to music and spending most of my time with family because they are my strength. On striking a balance Striking a balance between professional and personal life has never been an issue for me. In fact, this is one thing that I am so blessed with. Both, work and family happen with ease. I consider myself fortunate because I have immense support from my husband Aryan, and hence it has never been an issue. Usually during the week we work around the clock and keep Sundays exclusively for the family to make up for the whole week.

to me. What more could I have asked for than such a supportive family. Challenges as a designer Bring it on!!! This has always been my mantra, with more competition and a wide range of creative people in the market you have to be the one who stands out in the crowd by creating something new each time. The biggest challenge as a designer is to make Indian people connect with Indian fabrics and making them proud of their heritage. Advice to newcomers Start each day as it comes, work hard, give your 100% and chase your dreams till they come true. FAST FIVE: What is your greatest fear? No fear.

harat Shah, needs no introduction because his work says it all. Executive director of BNI Hyderabad and owner of Fanzart, this man is known for passion for his job, hardwork and sincerity. Currently also the Vice-President of the Jain International Trade Organization, Shah seems to have aced the art of balancing all the roles he plays in his life. We catch up with him to understand more about the two main professions which he has created and handles with great ease and aplomb.
red | may 2016 | 40
The inception of Fanzart… Basically, I started this for my daughter Sanjana. We opened the showroom the day after she completed her education. Now, of course, we both take care of it. Why Fans? When it comes to designing ceiling and designer fans, there is a huge gap in the market. Think about it, when you are doing up your space, will you think of making the ceiling designer? No, right? Exactly! Only people who would go abroad and probably bring back a designer fan. We reaslised that there wasn’t much of a choice available here. Hence we went ahead with this. Now, we are the franchisee for the complete state. We have been in the market for over two and a half years. Working on something that is so unconventional has its advantages and disadvantages, but for us, it’s been a good journey.
More about the brand Today Fanzart has over 30 showrooms all over the country and has become one of the biggest brands in designer fans. We have over 60 kinds of them. They suit all kinds of décor – from modern and contemporary to classic and simple. We ensure that there is something for everyone who walks in, whatever may be the kind of house they have. There are fans for outdoors which can be kept in the lawns and work during the rains. Then we have special ones for the kitchen, whereas designs are different for dining rooms, too. They are priced from Rs.15,000 to around Rs.75,000, giving our clients a huge range to choose from. The advantages We sell fans which function with remotes and make absolutely no noise – and these two have been our selling points, apart from the designs themselves. The disadvantages Strangely enough, there is a myth that designer fans don’t give air! People, unless they experience it, they won’t know the truth. Earlier, there were designer fans made only for show but Fanzart has made sure that they are beautiful and do their job well. For us, pulling people to stores is tough, once they visit us, then they surely do not walk out without buying them. In fact, we have regular clients who have used a couple of fans and have come back for more. Our first six months were very difficult, since they were spent in convincing customers that our fans actually give air. However, it got better after taking part in exhibitions and holding demonstrations. Every half year we have taken a step upward in growth. Future plans We hope to have 2-3 more setups in Hyderabad. But we are going slow and steady. As of now, we have people from different towns coming to Hyderabad to purchase our products, as quite a lot of people prefer going to a different city to picking up something from their own city. Having said that, we hope to open one outlet towards Gachhibowli as that side is
it is almost like a new city being built. Online competition People, who wish to indulge in the costlier ones, are not the kind of people who would buy them online. But the models which are less priced are available online. People want to look at, feel and then buy a designer fan. So it isn’t much of a competition to us till now. But yes, any given day they have an upper hand and are slowly penetrating into the market. Until then, we can manage absolutely well. The other side of yours Yes, BNI. A few years ago, I ended up attending a meeting with a relative of mine in Bangalore. The fact that so many people coming together to help one another was what touched my heart. Then I decided that we needed something like that in our city too. About BNI The concept of BNI is very different. Here we work with the philosophy of it being a ‘givers’ gain’. Initially members join to see what there is in it for them but they realize that the pleasure of giving is much higher than getting- and that is when it all changes. Members at BNI don’t think about themselves but about how they can help their comembers. That is why it has grown in more than 60 countries. For example, for someone who is starting an enterprise needs a lot of moral support and by joining here, by default has 50 odd friends who take care of him. For people who are already doing good
business, they have a platform to easily meet vendors. Today, if I need a lawyer, doctor, air-conditioning repair or car servicing – I have them all under one roof and not just that, I even meet them weekly! That gives me so much time to focus on my work. BNI hosts training sessions where we teach people to do smart business and presentations. A lot of people who have not learnt it academically are taught this so that they can present their business in a better way. Even the timing is brilliant! Imagine an organization that meets in the evening can probably end up in cocktails and other purposes apart from work, but here when you meet, before you head to your showroom or office, you know you’re doing business even before the competition wakes up.

Your role I see to it that the chapters are performing well. The headquarters lays down a system, which needs to be followed. They are there to guide us but we need to implement it. Every 6 months a President and Vice-President are selected and changed of each chapter – the supervision is handled by us. We need to make sure if someone is not giving good
THE CONTENTMENT OF HELPING SOMEONE WHO IS LOOKING FOR HELP, IS WHAT MOTIVATES ME.”
Another advantage they have is that connecting with other cities becomes very easy. If a company has to grow in 20 cities in India and they route it through the director, each director talks to the other and that way partnership and collaborations happen very fast. BNI Hyderabad Hyderabad had done Rs.500 cr worth of business in just last year! And India did about Rs.3,043 cr. We take immense pride in saying that Hyderabad is one of the fastest growing regions in the world. As of now, we are 930 members. They are in groups of 21 and they meet on different days.

service, then they are warned and later removed. Maintaining the quality in groups is also under me. As a head, I am the executive director, but I have people under me who need to be supervised over. Family support Only if a person is happy from within, can he/she be happy with everything around them. I love what I am doing and hence manage it all with a smile. Balancing isn’t easy but if it’s planned well and you consciously work towards it, it happens. What keeps you going? The pleasure of meeting people, networking and the philosophy of givers’ gain. The contentment of helping and
doing something for someone who is looking for help, is what motivates me Definition of rich Being rich is not just about your personal growth. It is about how you make people around you, grow with you. Extra money doesn’t pinch anyone, but it is when that extra money comes to you after it also goes to people around you, is when the actual richness comes in. One thing you would like to change about you I would have loved to be a cricketer. Actually, I am very happy with my life and with that, if there was a little bit of cricket added, it would have been complete. If not this If not this, I would have definitely been in interior designing. I change my house happily as I enjoy doing it up. Every time we shift a house (which I like to do quite often) I do it up myself. Your greatest achievement I think BNI has been the greatest because in the world we’re being recognized as one of the fastest growing networks. There are more than 700 directors from 60 countries and in terms of growth and speed with which we have taken up, we are in the top five! Message to the freshers If people say they are not happy due to their circumstances, it is an excuse. The remote to happiness is in your hands – do not leave it in someone else’s hand. Happiness is a habit cultivated.

THE ICE
CREAM MAN By Anahita Ahuja
Shoot by Dinakar Pamu
“
I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream!” – don’t we? For every single
ice cream lover out there, Cream Stone came to us as a blessing. When the concept was
introduced, it took the entire city by storm. As the heat scorches with May arriving, no
better time to talk to the man who is behind the delightful brand. Meet Viren Shah, Director, Cream Stone, who also owns Temptations and Scoops – three brands that speak volumes for themselves. Trying to know him more, we caught up with him and his better half, Arthi in a candid chat.
red | may 2016 | 24
Flashback We have been manufacturers of ice cream since the past 20 years. The journey started with our father Govindas Shah, starting a hotel named Haridwar after which the family started the brand Scoops. In 2004, we came up with Temptations. With Scoops, we used to do a lot of wedding catering and would serve the new, different avours there, after which we had people coming back to us for those special avours. That is when the idea of Temptation came about. Our first outlet was on Road no 36, Jubilee Hills and now we have 29 Temptation outlets. Cream Stone Even though we had Temptation, when we wanted exotic avours, we would end up going to other places to have ice creams. Then we decided to start a different concept with not just avours but also something that would add value to the ice cream by customizing it. The KBR outlet, is our smallest which was started in 2008. The entire process took us about two months and was quite an experience for us. When one gives something premium, which doesn’t belong to the regular format, not only the taste but the look and feel also had to be different. Generally, the product comes as per the ingredients you use. While making a product you work around the pricing, but with Cream Stone we did a reverse format. First we made the product and then went back with the costing and pricing – using the best ice cream and the best ingredients. Even the serving in a wafe part came about because we didn’t want to serve it in a cup or cone. We believe that the taste, experience and location – all these matter while selling a product. The response We hadn’t ever expected the city to react the way it did to Cream Stone. Till date, we haven’t spent a rupee on marketing and even back then, it was all just through a word of mouth. The first store was to test the market for
a year. Noting the response during the right season and off-season and the way everyone took to it, we decided to open another branch. In fact, the first 2-3 months, all of us spent in the store, talking to guests and getting their feel. The growth We have seen the actual growth in the last three years, when we opened more than 25 outlets. There are 12 outlets in Hyderabad, 4 in Pune, 4 in Chennai, 1 in Coimbatore, 1 in Calicut, 3 in Vijayawada, 2 in Vishakhapatnam and 4 in Bangalore. As of now, we have these 8 cities and are tying up with tire 2 and tire 3 cities as well, apart from tire 1 ones. By the end of May we should be opening our 5th outlet in Pune – all these out station ones are spacious ones (1000 sq ft). They are in the line of coffee places where people can come for an ice cream and hang around too. By the end of this year, we should be opening 15 more outlets across the country.
of us have different departments to look into. One handles the operations, one the front end, another the finance, etc. We meet every Tuesday and discuss where and how to take it forward. We have a professional team that manages each department. For example, we don’t get into the hiring at all, there is a HR head who handles that. Networking I enjoy being at the store and meeting customers. Apart from that, I meet retailers and get feedback and I enjoy networking. So all this comes naturally. I have noticed that the preferences change every two years so working towards a new trend and seeing where the curve is going is my forte. We are also a part of CII -Young Indians. There are about 140 members between the age group of 25 to 40 years, from different industries. There is BNI, where we get connected to other people.
The challenges The most difficult part is the staffing. Usually, wherever we start a store we need to give our staff the accommodation too and if they are all from one city then they end up taking leave during festivals and holidays, which is the busiest time for us. When it comes to handling the staff, it isn’t just the money that they see. A lot of it depends on how you train, treat and interact with them, too. In our organization, apart from the stores, we also have manufacturing plants so we have enough people working with us. I feel that the art of managing staff is one of the key drivers in our business. As a family business Five of us handle the business– my brother Amrish, cousin Amit, uncles Sudhir and Sunil and me. All

All these are people oriented – they not only keep me busy but also keep me extremely happy as I absolutely love meeting people. Despise one quality I wish I were more punctual and organized. I do not have a proper routine and my wife Arthi is perpetually after me to set that right. Meeting people usually means eating out; I wish I could eat at home more often. Role model My only role model is my father. Coming from humble beginnings, he has risen to great heights. Motto of life Not everything is about money, it is about passion and enjoyment too. Enjoy what you do and you will definitely be successful – once you are successful, the money follows.
safe and successful business. COMPATIBILITY METER: She is very caring: Viren She is the perfect wife any man could have asked for. The way she cares about all of us is unbelievable – whether it is our food, lifestyle or any aspect of life. Whatever I do, is looked into by her! She is the home minister and all of us listen to her. She is very open minded - my decisions are mine but she understands and accepts them. She is a very encouraging person, too. Together we make a good, fun team. In fact, she is more a daughter to my father than a daughter-in-law. These are a few of her favorites: Color: Red Food: Khowsuey and Italian Ice cream: Tropical iceberg Holiday: She loves beaches Attire: Western and tunics Brand: She loves MAC for makeup.
By the end of this year, we should be opening 15 more outlets across the country.
I’m lucky to enter this family: Arthi Our relationship is very simple and clear; the understanding we share is that of friends and hence share everything with each other. The foundation of our relationship is on trust. He is a doting father, very sweet and extremely patient. Seldom does he get angry. And even if we fight, we usually sort it out within a few minutes. If I am sulking, he always tries and makes up by saying sorry first!
Your Strength Definitely my family. I am blessed to have them all. Even right now, if I decide to go on a holiday for a month, I know they will take care. I always have them to fall back on and vice versa. Advice to newcomers in the food and beverage industry Before you start something, do not go about asking 100 people about it. Ask one or two people who have enough experience. Start with a small, calculated risk and gradually grow from there. Even if you see our graph, we opened one outlet a year for the first four years to understand the market before we went ahead in a big way. Baby steps are the only way to go ahead with a red | may 2016 | 26

Shoot by Dinakar Pamu
By Anahita Ahuja
The beginning My father started the company in 1999 with a single store in Hyderguda, then moved to Road No 36, Jubilee Hills in 2000. At that point we had everyone laughing at us as the road was quite deserted and barely had any commercial store around. It was in 2013, that we moved out of there as the construction of metro was announced and opened Elevate. We happened to be one of the first few to open a store on a residential road. Around at the same time we also got into distribution and have become dealers for a couple of brands in Bengaluru, Chennai, Cochin and Coimbatore. I completed my graduation in the US and joined my father in the business. The plan wasn’t to do so, but since the business peaked, I decided to come back and it all fell into place. Fortunately, my parents are supportive and it is not like a typical family business scene where the parents force their kid to join and then micro-manage. They let me take charge and do what I want to do. What helps is the fact that I know what they want, so it is all in harmony. The future plans By 2018, we should have company operated stores in Bengaluru, Pune and Vijayawada, for which we are working with consultants and deliberating on various aspects. New stores mean getting experts on board. Apart from that we have manufacturing plant almost ready for functioning, coming up. It is a 60,000sqft automated plant for which we have own in Germans and Italian experts, who helped us setup the plant. We have always given our passion and the idea more importance than most other aspects in the business. I take immense pride in saying that we are a passion driven company! I wouldn’t say that it is not a number driven company, but everything that we are today is only
because we have been passionate about what we do. Target clientele We work very well with architects, interior designer, builders and the HNI of the city – we have done about 80-90% of the premium builder mockups in the city. Apart from that, if you ask, anyone who owns an apartment or villa in a premium community is our target clientele. Challenges Our biggest challenge is investment which is high. Now that we are scaling up by moving to other cities, we need that kind of an ambience where it is presented well to give our customers that experience. It is not a website where I can stock things in a warehouse. Secondly, it is a very personalized business; we need someone in charge to be present at every given time to find out if the client is at ease. It is only when the client has faith in the retailer does he gain faith in the product. So the experience has to be sold well. And thirdly, the furniture market is quite unorganized in our country. People aren’t aware of most of the things. Having been trend-setters, we need to spend quite a lot of time and money to bring about awareness of a product like ours. There is a decent amount of awareness of brands in the apparel and automobile industry. A typical Indian furniture buyer is still not accustomed to brands. Hence there is this whole process of educating the customer. Another challenge is to simplify the sales process as a usual sales cycle lasts over a week and is fairly
complicated. We are coming up with tools with which we will revolutionize the way people buy furniture by getting into developing concepts using technology. We have developed platforms where customers can design a wardrobe in under 60 seconds and a kitchen in under 10 minutes. Online market as competition These market segments are completely different as we operate in the premium genre. Furniture is something people want to look and feel before they own. People who buy stuff online are the ones
who aim at using it for a year or two and sell them off. The ones who are passionate about making a home and have an understanding of design are the ones who walk into stores. Very rarely have I heard customers make comparisons to online products, only because our clientele understands the difference between a branded and non-branded product.

What is the one thing you’d like to change about this field? The fact that most Indians use carpenters to do up their homes is something that
Hyderabad as a market At this point, Hyderabad is a market that everyone should look at. Inspite of the slowdown in the last couple of years, we have been amongst the top in the premium furniture segment across the country. People have good taste and a liking for high quality products. They understand what luxury is. Balance between your personal and professional life? Fortunately, passion for the business and this industry keeps us going. We usually clock about 65-70 hours a week. The group is at a growth stage and even 12 hours of work a day feels less. It is really hard to differentiate between personal and professional life in the

Market’s progress in the last decade The furniture market is fairly unorganized, with 90% of the businesses lying in the unorganized sector and only 10% in the organized sector. A few European brands have tried entering the Indian market in the last decade. Most of them have been unsuccessful only because of the strategies implemented and the lack of a good Indian partner. Furniture business is not something that can be learnt overnight. It is an industry that grows on you and there are certain things that can be gauged only with experience. Now the companies have understood the potential of the furniture segment, because of which we have seen the recent boom in the B2B and E-commerce/marketplace furniture market.
I TAKE IMMENSE PRIDE IN SAYING THAT
business because we carry work home. Time post working hours is often used to disconnect and strategize on the bigger picture.
I would definitely like to change. We are currently in the process of spreading awareness of the advantages of using furniture that comes out of organized manufacturing houses. It has taken the company 20 years to understand the right materials, finishes and techniques of manufacturing. I would like to pass on this advantage to everyone looking to buy furniture for his or her home. His role I take care of the HR, advertising and software development. We are coming up with tools with which we will revolutionize the way people sell furniture by getting into developing concepts using new technology. I believe that in India businessmen who adapt to technology faster, will be a step ahead and we have discovered that. Hence we are quite a few steps ahead of the others. I handle the new plant too. For sales, fortunately, we have a very strong team who has been with us since years so we don’t have to get into that. And when it comes to procurement, I do that with the support of my father. That department comes with experience and cannot be studied, so hopefully in 4-5 years, I should have it all under my control.
