In fact, he was never serious about academics though he obtained a degree from a UK university. He is creating ripples with his facility.

Satya Sriram Valluri has brought in an eatery that offers innovative concoctions to the delight of city foodies. Cuisine serves some new delicacies from the kitchen of Pepperazzi The Diner.

He recounts his phenomenal rise to the top of the jewellery industry with his honest efforts and hard work.

s there a youngster who has not dreamt of walking (or running to be precise) the path of Tendulkar, Dhoni or Kohli? Well, how many of them can give a go-by to academics to be cricketers? Mr.K.V.S.Sridhar, Secretary, Kandukuri Bangaramma Educational Trust comes up with a great viable solution. Come June and cricket enthusiasts can dabble both in cricket and education. Sridhar has been brought up in an entrepreneurial ambience. Obtaining BA and MBA degrees, he till recently ran Sailors Maritime Academy as its Director. Later, he floated Sri’s Maritime Academy. Sridhar’s heart and soul are always with irresistible cricket. He has given shape to his dream and established Kandukuri Cricket Academy (KCA). His interest in the sport naturally got an additional impetus with his second son K.Sai Satwik proving his prowess on the pitch and was chosen to be the first standby for the Andhra state under 14 cricket team. His wife Saritha is one of the Directors, making KCA an all family-venture. Sridhar seemed to have laid a sound foundation for this high-end academy, and is full of plans for the academy.

Genesis Cricket has been my passion. So, with an aim to do something in this field, I am coming up with the first-of-its-kind cricket academy in the state, which will lure aspirants from all over the country. We have no dearth of talent; I am sure you can find it in every corner. It is just that the children with spark in them need to be mentored, trained and guided in the right direction. Objective My objective is to coach aspirants, imparting fine nuances of the game. I needed to go away from the city to Dakamarri for the right venue. The complex to be built in the 10-acre land will have everything. KCA is having another cricket coaching facility in Yendada. We have tied up with Delhi Public School (DPS) at Anandapuram and have been coaching students, providing them transport and food. The first Innings I can assure that KCA will be an ideal platform for young cricketers not only

to hone their skills but also to rub shoulders with the best. At present, more than 50 students are undergoing rigorous coaching on the Yendada campus. We have four boys and two girls who are state players. We have four BCCI-qualified coaches stationed here for three sessions - 6:00am to 8:30am, 4:00pm to 6:00pm and 6:00pm to 8:30pm (under lights). Admissions for the Dakamarri campus have started now. Children from 4th standard to 12th are eligible to apply.

hat has a girl from Srikakulam in common with one of the world’s richest trade tycoons Amancioortega? Yes, the alma mater, Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). She is the first Indian to get an MBA degree from this Spanish University, whose portals many stalwarts walked. Everything about her appears to be unique, starting from her name. “The credit goes to my mother. Rasagna (Joyful) is picked from Lalitha Sahasranamam,” says the happy looking Rasgna as she settles down for a tetee-tete at her talk-of the town brewery MYZ-UNO.

By V. Sarada EXCERPTS Reminiscences My father Mr.Dharmana Rama Rao is a retired bank manger. Mother Mrs.Padma Praveena, though qualified, chose to be a home-maker. As the only child, I monopolize their lives and attention. After schooling in Gayathri Vidya Parishad, Srikakulam, I came to GITAM University for engineering and later went to pursue my MBA in UCM. I started a Smart City and Strategy consulting firm Vossoa along with my husband in Madrid and started its subsidiary in India, naming it Motherland Infra P.Ltd. I also entered brewery/hospitality industry at home. To burn the stress and restore my energy levels, I practise the Spanish Baile – Flamenco and participate in community events. On the spiritual front, I am passionate about astrology as it is a combination of Astro-Physics and Planetary Mathematics. The new brew I am a passionate traveler and visited more than 40 countries to understand varied cultures, business dynamics and livelihoods. My take away included the prerequisites of Smart City. There is a particular stress on the ‘family dining’ culture in Europe. People find it convenient to meet their kith and kin at brew pubs, which cater to all ages. Bringing it to India, I invested in a Bangalore-based microbrewery, which gave me an insight of metro markets. Family dining contributes significantly to the city on the move. Following my roots, I set up a microbrewery in Vizag. Hiccups Before executing any project, I go for an red | may 2018 | 48

Shoot by Dhana Vijay exhaustive planning. I did face hurdles in terms of finalising the place, paper work, bureaucratic permits, import of equipment. One must be resolute to introduce a new concept in our evolving society. Brewery in Vizag a dichotomy? Certainly not. I call the city Barcelona of India as it is endowed with multi-cultural denizens, beach life and tourism and is comparable to any metro. Initially, there was a mixed response. Now the project is up and running, they say, “The city was waiting for a place like this and MYZ-UNO has nailed it”.

Women entrepreneuradvantages & disadvantages Women entrepreneurship begins from home. Every mother, who sends out responsible children, is an entrepreneur. The number of women entrepreneurs is growing in the new favourable ecosystem. Moreover, we have a competitive advantage over men as we possess emotional intelligence. We can build a women-safe corporate and work-life balance culture. Our women are stepping out to establish their credentials. This empowerment also leads to successful families. Having said that, I admit that Family, Finances and Faith are the major barriers. Cross them & we are invincible. Independence It is about grabbing & not giving. Anyone with confidence, ethics and courage can grab power and survive effectively. Our mythology revolves around the power of woman. Yet, till recently, women were treated like support-rending machines at home. Thanks to education & change in people’s mindset, women are leaving their footprints in all fields - be it space science or NGO or IT industry. Problems peculiar to women They are country-specific. Here any woman who enters the hospitality sector is given free advices- “Don’t. You can’t manage.” It takes a lot more for a woman to turn a deaf ear to these spirit-dampening remarks. Well, I overcome them as I draw a clear line between my personal and professional environments. Time management Inspired by my husband, I follow a triple 8 rule (8-8-8). Out of 24 hours, 8 hours are for sound sleep, 8 hours for professional activities and the rest 8 are strictly for personal life. Any project

planning includes 10% deviation as we strive to live perfectly in an imperfect world. So one must be ready for that. Measures against injustice To fight injustice, women should be independent in thought and logical in living. Generally, a woman’s life revolves around parents, siblings, husband and children. Especially, mothers have all their focus on their children. It demolishes the ‘You’ in ‘You’. We should be nice in personal and wise in professional fronts. Women should be given equal opportunities in education and employment and mothers should be empowered.

FAMILY DINING CONTRIBUTES SIGNIFICANTLY TO THE CITY ON THE MOVE.

Financial freedom It holds good only in a capitalistic society and makes woman a money-minting machine. It can never empower women. Selfconfidence, talent, capability to convince, rational thinking and finance are the key pillars to gain independence. Memorable moments My wedding in personal life. Professionally, the launch of my first firm-Vossoa, that too when I was barely 23 years old. Gratifying moments The day I was awarded MBA by the Spanish University. It was remarkable for two reasons. One - I could finish the entire course in Spanish with merit. Two - got it from the oldest university. Tips to aspiring entrepreneurs Look for opportunities, not ideas. Ideas may be important but opportunity builds the empire.

CSR activities a)

At international level: Incubation in India and Spain is specially focused on women empowerment in the digital arena. So we sponsor trade ideas from women across the globe until the solution enters the market. We mentor the future entrepreneurs to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions for the challenging world.

b)

At local level: Our company has taken up comprehensive activities providing electricity (Installation of Renewable Energy plants), education and sanitation. Gopalapenta, our ancestors’ village, has renewable energy programmes- a comprehensive hybrid energy unit to generate power to ensure 24X7 supply for the few houses in the village. We work with women, building awareness and strengthening the women empowerment programmes.

Future plans We are in the process of franchising “MYZ-UNO” brand in other cities of AP. The AP government has chosen us as the finalists for an innovative application. This mega project can be a major breakthrough. There are a few more plans and projects in the pipeline.

ote the paradox. He belongs to a state that literally spurned Hindi overtures. But it is the same Rashtriya Bhasha that served as the first step to the magnificent ladder of success he diligently climbed. Young Srinivasan, then working as a salesman in a gold shop, had his blessing coming in the form of a Gujarati merchant who was unable to converse with the local dealer. Srinivasan acted as a translator for the trader, without realising that this favour would script a splendid chapter of his life. Spotting a unique spark in the boy, the tradesman, Mr.Pranjivandas Zaveri, advised him to try his hand at jewellery trade, leaving his card, a tiny flame of ambition and a thinking boy behind. His tryst with the industry began on that memorable day. Now Mr.K.Srinivasan, CMD, Emerald Jewel Industry India Ltd., ranks among world class jewellers. He talks of his ventures & adventures in a candid interview and poses for the camera without any fuss.

By V.Sarada

HERE IT GOES…. Formative years I, the youngest of six siblings, lost my father when I was six years old. My mother, struggling hard to make both ends meet, could educate me up to B.Sc. Giving a go-by to my wish to pursue engineering, I joined a gold shop for a paltry salary of Rs.150 per month. With in a few months, my meet with Mr.Zaveri happened. Adventure begins Seeking greener pastures and red | may 2018 | 52

ignoring the resisting voices of my well-wishers, I quitted the job and raised money from every possible source, including my mother to buy 250gm gold. I designed my first ever trinket and got it made by a goldsmith friend. Thus, clutching a pair of jhumkas and a tiny thread of hope, I embarked on the Ahmedabad train and the eventful expedition of my life. Foundation based on values Mr.Zaveri proved to be as good as his word, stood by me as my mentor and

guarantor introducing me to his industry friends as his ‘son’. Living up to his expectations, I too set three commandments for myself. I have built & been running this magnificent empire on those rudiments- I shall not deviate from the purity I declare; I give the best finishing; I go for innovative designs. That was the time when the demand outdid the supply. The manufacturers were so busy meeting delivery deadlines that they had little time to fine-tune the finishing or think of new designs. I learnt from their

mistakes and my efforts yielded good results. The makeover This exercise of going between goldsmiths and merchants went on from 1984 to 1990. But getting hand-made trinkets from artisans was becoming difficult as I had to deal with uneducated people in the transaction. Making them understand my designs and my vision was getting tougher by the day. It was time to take the next step- setting up my own factory and brand. My Emeralds Jewel Industry India Ltd. then came into existence. I went full throttle only after I fortified myself with needed knowledge. I attended shows across the world and interacted with heterogeneous jewellery experts to learn their genres and how they created them. Inevitable imports High polish achieved through machines is, any day, superior to the hand given one. I thought it was time to bring in the latest world technology and Indianise the designs. To start with, I got casting technology for the first time to India. It enabled me to give jewellery at affordable prices. I, then, went for a combination of handmade & machine designing, which was received with great zeal. Soon after, I brought in lethe technology, stamping jewellery from Turkey and electroforming jewellery from Switzerland. Now we have the latest technologies available under the Sun. Organised player Considered as a cottage industry, the sector was unorganized till recently. My passion for jewellery making and my ability to give good quality, perfect finish, trendy designs and timely delivery made me an organised player.

Fact(s)ory& figures I constructed a 5 lakh sq.ft facility in a 10-acre plot in Coimbatore. A 5 lakh sq.ft-factory dedicated to silver manufacturing will be operational in June. Till now, we have been making silver idols in electroforming method. Once the new factory becomes functional, we shall make silver utensils too. We also produce platinum and diamond jewellery. Wherever there is a shop run by merchants of Indian origin abroad, you are sure to find my products.

comparable prices, but I offer them. That is my USP. I can do it with ease because I am the manufacturer. I put my heart and soul in it and set standards. We can create any design the customers want as we have the state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities. The road ahead We shall test waters here and further penetrate. We are looking at Gajuwaka as a lucrative ground. Once we are in one Telugu state, can the neighbour be far behind? Telangana will be our next destination. New trends Jewellery market has become highly competitive. It is difficult to survive in the market unless and until we

I have 70 traditional and 100 CAD designers working for me across the country & studios in Mumbai, Coimbatore, New Delhi, Kolkata and Dubai. We installed 10 rapid prototyping machines and come up with 2000 new designs every month. I give direct employment to 5000 and yet another 5000 are engaged in supporting services. We produce nearly two tons of jewellery per month, though our installed capacity is 60 tons. Our next year’s target is 30 tons. It is show time We have been making jewellery and were going unsung. So, to satisfy my ego, I went for retailing and started my first franchisee in Pondicherry, titling it Jewel One. Tying up with Mr.Raja, I entered AP now. I thank him for getting me the first break. Why Vizag? I learnt that the city is full of afuent jewel connoisseurs. I have a network of dealers from Kashmir to KanyaKumari through which I learn which direction the wind blows and can gauge the capacity of any city. Vizag appears to yield rich haul. USP Every one speaks of quality and

meet the expectations of the younger generation. It can be attracted to gold only by creating trendy designs. We offer light weight jewellery, besides a wide range of products with affordable price to serve all strata of the society. Market shift With the entry of single brand retail stores under FDI the business has become more challenging. The demand will go up as the buying capacity increases. red | may 2018 | 53

But it did not take off and I was back to my easel. arrange my house with great fervor. However, the major turning point came in the shape of an interview at HSBC. I returned wiser heeding the advice of a friend that I would be better off as an interior designer than a BPO employee. I joined NIFT, Vizag. When I was going through the course, Mr.Ramachandra Raju, an interior designer, gave me a few drawing assignments, which made me sketch a new era in my life.

First assignment Though I was a novice, Mr.Jakkampudi Srinivas, CA, gave me an assignment, Turning point reposing trust in me. Eventually, I set up My interest in interior designing grew up SR Designer Studio. SR stands for along with me. I used to arrange and re- Suraj/Sun representing light.

The progress Till now, I executed 49 residential projects, including two in Hyderabad. One worth remembering project was that of the owner of Jaipur Hotel. He wanted 162 sq.ft. to be converted to a multi-purpose space and gave a huge must list. It needed me to muster all my skills and innovative ideas. Taming the team My 28-man team includes Rajasthani men for wood work, an electrician and a plumber. We work in great cohesion and they are always at my beck and call. My team is very dedicated and responsible. Modus operandi I draw inspiration from time and nature to create elegant interiors. I set up deadlines, depending on the size and kind of deliverables. I procure material from within the country. My policy is to have local products to guard against ensuing problems, if any.

Challenging assignment Supraja Richard Brothwick gave me her 15 sq.yd. duplex to be done in 45 days. It was during that time my son met with the fatal accident. Yet, I bounced back to work after 6 days & met the deadline. A good house A house should speak for people who live in it. It should look fresh and new every time the owner enters it. It should have a distinct character. For example, people first notice the ceiling of my living room which holds the renowned artist, Dolly’s paintings of musical instruments. That speaks for my love of music. I have yet another room which aunts the works of artists from my family and friends. This again brings forth my respect for joint family system. Specialisation Till now I have taken up only residential assignments and obviously I have become quite adept at this genre. I shall be exploring the other segments too and have quite a few plans for commercial projects, which would be drastically different from what others do. USP My commitment to time and deadlines is my strong point. I use natural wood and stone as I enjoy a connect with nature. Yet another trait of my brand is that there is a maximum of only 8% wastage in the material. Till now, I never dismantled a design I created. I can with certain pride say that even Hudhud could not damage my work and material.

I never received a single complaint. I have an exhaustive client meeting before I sign on dotted lines and only after I am totally convinced that our wavelengths match, I go for it. Customers choice Today’s customer looks for comfort rather than aesthetics. They want sturdy and maintenance-free material. Besides using eco-friendly material, people want greenery in the house, even if it is a small apartment. To this, I wish to include a water body strategically placed in the house as it emanates positive energy and the sound of water soothes frayed nerves. Frustrating and rewarding aspects I get frustrated when time or material is wasted. Meeting the project deadline is very rewarding. Vizag vs Hyderabad There are a few options to pick from when it comes to material in Vizag, while you are spoilt for choice in Hyderabad. There are a plenty to play with. Old wine in new glass Frankly speaking, old is gold. The architectural designing concepts in olden days are superb. Now we are taking the old concepts and giving them a new touch by using technology and new varieties of material available. Welfare activities I don’t like to publicise it. I hold free counselling sessions for the needy parents and children on one to one basis. I am attached to Age Care Foundation and chip in wherever there is a need. I am a small part of the road awareness camps Radhika (Radhisa) has taken up. Every Saturday, I cook food for at least 25 people & distribute to the needy. In this process I don’t like to involve or take anyone’s help. This is how I connect with my son, Nikhil.

The roots I hail from Vijayawada and was brought up in a joint family ran by my father Mr.Jagadeeswara Rao along with his four brothers. He resigned his PWD post to test his trade skills and rose to prominence in transport and finance sectors, working his way up. My mother Mrs.Sarada, a homemaker, diverted all her attention to us two boys. Clear objective If ‘resolute determination is the truest wisdom’, I have had it in ample measures right from childhood. I wore my ambition on my sleeve & made no bones that I had no interest in academics.

Love for Vijayawada Leaving the city was inconceivable for me. So I refused to go for the fashion designing course for which my father generously offered to send me to NIFT, Hyderabad. When I shifted my interest to hotel management, my father once again proposed to send me to a premium institution in Bengaluru. I said no and was prepared to go through any course that allowed me to stay in the city. So, I took the Hobson’s choice of studying B.Tech in VR Siddhartha Engineering College, Vijayawada. Later on, I was compelled to step out of the country to study MS in Leeds University, UK. This was again at father’s behest.

Vizag call Surprisingly, my father never wanted us to tow his trade line because he felt it was a sticky wicket. Though he perfectly understood my passion to be an employment-giver, not an employee, he advised me to work at least for a few years to gain experience & understand the value of money. So from UK, I returned to Hyderabad to join Computer Science Corporation as a networking engineer and worked for two years. Later, I took up civil contracts in Navy and Vizag airport. And I fell like thousand bricks for the Gajuwaka girl, Pallavi and the city that saw her birth and growth. Trade tide Pallavi shares my passion for business. Realising her avid interest in the beauty sector, I opened Studio 11, which she ran for two years. She had to give it up as our bundle of joy Mayuka arrived. Meanwhile, my quest for the right time & right venture was going on. Ironhill Brewery One fine morning, Pallavi stumbled on Prost Brew Pub FB page and brought it to my notice. Thoroughly impressed by its concept and ambience, I went in for negotiations with the owners. Though they were looking at Vizag for further expansion, they were a bit reluctant to go for a franchise mode. I could convince them & bagged their first franchise in the country. The spadework for the project began in Jan 2017 and I got this place in July. The work, started in August, was completed in November. After a month-long kitchen and brewery trials, we

threw open Ironhill on 27th Dec and ushered in New Year. To my delight, it received rave reviews from the word go. Perfect ground Vizag is the right place to run a restaurant. Out of the three major cities (Vijayawada, Tirupati and Vizag) in the statethis city has everything going for it. Besides being breathtakingly beautiful, it is growing in an organised manner, and its people are docile and disciplined. Till date, we have not faced any drunken brawls, nor did we witness misconduct of customers. Learning ground Since I came with no prior knowledge of this industry, I thought that the best way to enter it was through the franchise model. Prost takes a lot of burden off my shoulders in terms of maintaining manpower as it is armed with back up staff, besides running the brewery. It is a good learning ground for a fresher like me. Franchise favour It has been a smooth sail. They are open to my ideas and accept my suggestions. Since I am the interface between them and the local public, my opinion carries a lot of weight. Whenever they launch anything new, I appraise

them if it gels with the local sentiment or not. For example, I suggested that we should go for the buffet model lunch from Monday to Friday and they readily accepted it. It will start soon. Best part of hospitality industry It is awesome to survey a packed brewery and the mixed throng of all ages. Since our guests feel comfortable enough to bring their children and enjoy this place, I know that I have reached my intended goal. Future plans My intention is not to stay where I am now. I have drafted my roadmap. Plan B is getting ready even as I am through with Plan A. We have some projects in the same hospitality line. CSR activities We have contributed to the red on a Mission and we keep donating to Akshaya Patra. Memorable days I carry indelible memories of my college days. Even now our gang of 30 college mates meet and relive those days. Those were the days we were found more at film theatres and less on the college campus. Almost every semester the principal used to summon my father and complain to him about my escapades. My father, in return, would hold brief for me, citing young blood as an excuse.

COMPATIBILITY METER ‘PALLAVI IS MY LIFELINE’ My father had given me all the freedom to choose my life partner, of course with a rider that she should be from our community. Fortunately, Pallavi, whom I met on FB, fitted the bill. Her innocent and serene face won over my heart. It turned out to be ‘they lived happily ever after’ story with both of us sharing a lot of interests. Arrival of Mayuka doubled the joy of our togetherness.

n a city already heaving with delectable multi-ethnic cuisines, it is quite interesting that an American-diner themed restaurant Pepperazzi The Diner made such a lasting impression on the local palate, that too within such a short span. The restaurant’s chic name is a prelude to its luxurious interiors, friendly staff and exhaustive menu, whose pedigree is a mix of Indian, Continental, Chinese, Pan-Asian & Italian. Satya Sriram Valluri, Managing Director of Annadah Hospitality Private Limited and Pepperazzi Franchisee Owner, knows a thing or two on what exactly clicks with the foodies. He has now zhooshed up the menu to provide an array of melt-in-your-mouth fusion dishes. It is little wonder people don’t mind waiting for long to enjoy a meal here. Beware, you may get hooked to the delicacies which are as alluring to the eyes as they are scrumptious to the stomach. Bon Appetite!

This dish is a great option for a piping hot savoury snack.

Bet you have never relished fish with a twist like this. This slightly spicy fish entrée has grilled fillets served with a fresh delicious sauce which is a mélange of cilantro, lime juice, cream and onions. It tastes best if accompanied with mashed potatoes and grilled veggies. Delicious and filling! Need we say more?

Try not to succumb to emotions at workplace, but it is also not good to shut yourself from co-workers. Your attitude may affect your work. But, at the end everything will work the way you want. You just need to keep your patience. Businessmen should choose the direction they are keenly interested in. Yelling out all your feelings doesn’t help the married. Avoid looking for love on social dating apps. It may lead to heartburn. It is no time to get carried away and invest your feelings in the unknown. Lucky for you:

If in business, rejoice as luck will be on your side but be vigilant. Focus only on one or two verticals. There is no need to look in all directions. Don’t consider a job change or relocation at this point. Your earnestness and diligent work may be recognised. Bonding with associates, however, may take a hit. Stepping into new projects will bring favourable rewards. For those in business, profits are likely to be lower than expected. Involvement in partnerships should be avoided as the results could be hazardous. Spend time with spouse or plan a surprise date. Singles will meet that someone special. Lucky for you:

Your keen efforts and determination will help you grow. However, colleagues and boss may not appreciate you at all, so fend for yourself. Sort out issues at work and learn to adjust. DEBATE OVER

SABHA

burger stories

retold

H

yderabad has a new eatery coming up almost every month. Keeping up the trend, here is an addition to your list of must go restos. Lavishly stretching in a 2500 sq.ft., this exclusive rooftop wine and dine place is a perfect evening destination. Like its name, Log Sabha has interesting interiors with paintings flaunting strong quotes, for example, there is portrait of a lady reporter with a caption -Fake Stories. The place is beautifully lit and a truck parked inside is what catches your attention. The place, which accommodates a maximum of 100 people, is always buzzing, but the Sunday’s sunset sessions with amazing music and food are always houseful. The lavish menu includes a mix of Indian and continental food, besides offering cocktails. Though the complete range of menu is tasty, the sugarcane cocktail appears to be popular, besides iced pepsi cocktail and jello shots. Coming to the snacks, the grilled dishes, mostly the fish and various types of maggi are alluring.

F

amished and need an instant solution to your hunger? Then Burger Stories is your destination. Burgers have always been those quick bites that we

all love. However, an exclusive place that has a wide range of burgers with some refreshing mocktails is definitely welcome. Developed on this concept, this tiny yet lively place offers you a plethora of burgers in addition to the wraps and beverages. Youngsters who wish to hang out with their friends at an economical, yet tasty destination, Burger Stories is the place to be. It is ideal for birthday parties as well. Though all the burgers are worth trying and have their signature features, lamb burger, chicken wings, and Turkey burger are the must-trys. THE WALL

ole in the wall? No there is certainly no hole in the wall. It is just an adaptation of the popular slang- a hole in the wall meaning low budget places that

are beautiful and cozy. Living up to its name, the 3,000 sq.ft Hole in the Wall CafĂŠ, located at Road no 45, Jubilee Hills, seems to be creating quite a buzz. The ambiance is welcoming with earthy and homely interiors. With a play of pastel colours, the place definitely makes it perfect to hang out with friends or chill out with family. Indulge in the lavish spread of menu and have some gadget-free time by exploring the board games like chess, Uno, and others that are kept handy. You can dive deep into the menu, but if you wish to try the audience choice then chicken and porky 9 years are a must try. If you have a sweet tooth then waffles are the ones you must indulge in first.

Childhood Ours is a business family with my father engaged in construction, paints and hardware. My mother is an MBA degree holder and takes an active part in our business. Younger brother Sanjay Kumar Reddy is an interior designer and runs a solar company and helps dad in the business too. Amidst all his busy schedule he also helps me in the marketing and branding of the label. My parents wanted me to focus on my studies before I chose a field for my career. I studied engineering in computer sciences in a college in Kurnool. I always had a air for designing and therefore, post my engineering I joined Hamstech for a one-year diploma course in fashion designing.

THERE IS NO SET PATTERN IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY. ONE HAS TO CREATE ONE’S OWN PATH. THAT IS WHAT I HAVE DONE.

World of threads and stitches Like all girls, I too love dressing up and had a keen eye for colours and cuts. But it was the weddings in our families that made me pursue fashion designing. I feel a wedding is an occasion that brings in a wide range of fashion trends dipped in the different emotions. Every outfit has a story and every face that you see at a wedding is an emotion. It is fascinating to create designs that blend with them. That was what inspired me to pursue fashion designing seriously. I do pret collection and westerns, but my heart lies in wedding silhouettes which can be used later too. Hassle-free launch I feel blessed to have my family which has been a constant support in all my decisions. They are proud that I am pursuing this line. My

friends too are supportive and have encouraged me. Frankly speaking, I didn't face any hurdles to launch the label. I started off with online selling to gain experience. I created designs and sold them online, before launching my label. This testing waters gave me good insight of market and confidence. Building Sirisha Reddy brand and competitions Nah!! I don’t see anyone as my competition. Fashion is a vast subject, and everyone has their own space which can be earned through one’s own ideas and uniqueness. Each designer is singular in his/her own way. So, competing with my own self, I strive to improve myself every single day. Like every other brand, my brand has its own style and significance. I can perfectly customize outfits for brides. I don't repeat the designs and keep changing them. We believe that weddings are special occasions and what you wear must be one of its kind that leaves you with a memory for life. Young entrepreneur Since my childhood, I have been a go-getter and self-taught. I improve on designs and cuts, based on the feedback and reactions of people. I have been enterprising since my childhood. I used to apply mehendi to all the ladies at weddings. Later, I started taking up small graphic designing and VFX assignments via online. With the money I earned, I used to buy gifts for my parents and brother. So, I can say, I started working since I was in Class X. All this experience came handy when I started my business. The ever-changing trends Trends come and go, but we focus more on luxury and comfort of the

outfit. It should match the person and at the same time give comfort to the wearer. So, carrying the outfit with ease is the style. Indian weaves in limelight Weaves are from ancient times, but now people are understanding their beauty. I feel the old traditional Kanjeevaram sari from mother’s wardrobe is the best. As an Indian and as a designer, I support weavers and value their hard work. We sell Gadwal and Kanjeevaram hand woven saris in our store. Fashion designer Vs the brand That's a tricky question. I feel a brand is much bigger than the designer. So, it is not about identity, the brand dominates the designer. We never know who designed that classic white shirt, but we tend to remember what brand it is. Brand has a longer life. It is not subjected to a person's skill. The process All the designing of a basic western shirt to a wedding lehenga is done by me. I have a huge team which does handwork to seam and rip. But I do the main scratch colour dying to the end product as it gives me immense satisfaction. My workshop is at Kurnool. Unpredictable fate If you find a good client who understands the aesthetics of an outfit, it is fine or else the whole effort may go for a toss. Secondly, a lot of effort goes into the designing of outfits, but you often find them replicated at a lower price. Clients who don't understand the difference of fabric, detailing and more, get confused and go for this duplicate stuff. Yet another concern is our designs are offshoots of our imagination and inspiration. Some may like and some may not. red | may 2018 | 27

Sometimes even the best lines of design op. The digital wave in fashion With the advent of digital media, the clients now have many options, ideas and thoughts. They are well aware of fabrics, their textures and more. I feel they have all the right to ask, discuss, compare and then buy the ones they completely like because at the end of the day, it is their satisfaction that matters. It is quite fun and interesting to interact with clients.

RAPID FIRE

Memorable moments There are unlimited memorable moments. As a bridal designer, my client meetings are long as I need to understand what cut they like, which fabric they are

comfortable in and much more. Not just the bride, I interact with the family members, observe their lifestyle. That allows me to go through their life. These interactions are memorable for me and great learning. Challenges Each day is a challenge. But, the one challenge that keeps me on my toes is to maintain the same quality, luxury and comfort, despite the magnitude of work. Future Expanding my brand to other cities and countries.

Best outfit designed till date: There are many. Can’t choose one. Memorable compliment: My parents told me that they were proud to have me.

Fashion in one phrase: It’s how you feel and carry it.

SHE SAYS... •

Women should lead life with a sense of self-worth, respect and dignity, have complete control over their life, both at home & workplace.

To be able to make independent decisions is empowerment. I respect it.

Be you. Stay confident and rooted irrespective of your growth.

Be patient. There is no gain without pain. So, keep trying even if you fail. Hard work pays.

The fashion foray My home town is Dharmavaram, Anantapur District, a hub of silk saris. My family has been in silk sari manufacturing and is one of the well-established and very well known wholesalers. Growing up in such an environment, I was naturally exposed to this trade right from a young age. However, with an intention to have a sound academic foundation, I pursued my MBA. Post my MBA, I did work for five years in the industry before taking the reins of the family trade in my hands.

Job vs entrepreneur Yes, many would expect that I, with such high qualifications, would ideally opt for a job which offers security. The fashion industry may be all about creative glitter and glamour, but it is also fraught with high risk. Encouraged by the fact that my family is at the back end and creates fashion, I invested my expertise in bringing our skill to the forefront. To achieve that there was no better way than to step into the retail segment.

Indian weaves As mentioned, my family has been into Dharmavaram silks for decades. So, we always have a special affinity to Indian weaves. We are one of the largest manufacturers & wholesalers of silk saris, catering to the major retailers in South India. With 800 weavers working for us, most of the production happens in-house. This gives us an extra edge and a total control over the quality of products. I have always worked in collaboration with weavers, even when the Indian weaves took a backseat. Now, with awareness growing, it is nice to see many fashion designers and labels choosing Indian weaves. Ideation to implementation Apart from our own manufacturing, we have tie-ups with some of the biggest manufacturers in India, in other segments of women's ethnic wear. With this kind of background and experience, our procurement team is very selective about the products, not just in designs, but also in quality. Every woman is special and so are her tastes. Therefore, to satisfy all tastes,

outlet for wholesale of silk saris at Banjara Hills. We are planning to spread our wings by opening more stores, boutiques, and want to encourage designers through this exercise.

Customisation vs pre-designed outfits Often the customers go for pre-designed outfits. Those who like to wear outfits that are exclusive or different from the current market trends and who are very particular about their fittings prefer customisation. Otherwise, many prefer to select from the pre-designed outfits.

The other side of Vijay I love cooking and it is a stress buster for me. People who have tasted my dishes say I cook great. I love watching films and traveling.

Tough ride Being in the fashion industry is like riding a tiger. You need to always stay on it. Fashion changes rapidly and we must stay ahead of it. Future of Zasya Soon we are opening one exclusive

Balancing work & life Since we are in retail business, we are open all the seven days a week. I take time whenever I need a break. I am a movie buff and watch all Telugu movies. I love to travel a lot and whenever I get a chance I plan a trip. As I studied in the UK, I have a very special liking for it and that is my all-time favourite spot. Europe is also one preferred destination.

EVERY WOMAN IS SPECIAL AND SO ARE HER TASTES. SO, WE OFFER A WIDE RANGE OF COLLECTION.

Sustaining competition One very important factor is to stay up to date with the fashion trends. We should make sure that the latest attires are available on our store counters. Pricing is the second important factor and last but not the least is customer service.

we offer a wide range of collection. Our sales teams are perfectly trained to understand the requirements of the customers and help them chose the right products.

Two sides of the coin Fashion has now become an indicator of social status. It gives a great creative satisfaction to see your outfits making the customer smile & brides blush. But, the trends in the fashion industry change very rapidly and we need to be ever ready to embrace them. Compounding the problem further are the mushrooming outlets in Hyderabad. So, having a fashion label is a challenging task.

We do not have kids yet, but I can say that he would be a good father going by the affection and care he bestows on his brother's kids. He is very romantic and likes to surprise me - planning a short trip to a quiet little place for the weekend or taking me out on a date. Sometimes we just spend time together at home, which is more romantic than anything else. Well, we come from two completely different backgrounds so there are bound to be some dissimilarities. Eat what your body can digest,” says

Deepika Chalasani, lifestyle

management expert and owner of

Fit4Life. Her approach to diet, health and lifestyle surprises you as she never advises diets that make her clients crave for food. “Food satisfies the soul, so why should we deprive it of any taste?” On that satisfying thought, she breaks the myths around healthy living and gives a glimpse of her journey into the most misunderstood field ‘Lifestyle Management’. Deepika pursued MBA in Human Resources Management, Masters in Economics and Masters in Psychotherapy and Counselling, and was enjoying a successful career in the corporate world. But most unexpectedly, she ventured into the fitness field (lifestyle and weight management). A conversation with her is an eye-opener and redefines the approach to healthy living.

Formative years I hail from Krishna district. Though born in Assam, I was brought up in Ooty. My parents Mr.Subba Rao and Mrs.Rama Devi used to travel across the country because of my father's job. So, all my formative years have been in boarding schools. Later, I went to Pune for my Masters in Symbiosis. In 2012, we finally shifted base to Hyderabad. Healthy change I had a successful career as consultant red | may 2018 | 34

in the corporate world dealing with top 10 companies listed in the Fortune 500 list. Life was great with a wonderful husband S.M.Reddy & children- Aarav and Aanya. At 39 and at the peak of my career, I faced health issues. I had put on 30 kilograms and diagnosed with diabetes, high BP and knee pains. On the other hand, my 60-year old father was all fit and filled with energy. He could easily walk, cycle and run for kilometers, whereas I had lost complete control on my health.

Enlightenment My parents are practising nutritionists and were in the field for over a decade. When I looked at my parents and then at myself, I realised that I have to take charge of my life. That was when I decided to tighten up my lifestyle. However, the first hurdle was weight. To get rid of it, I went to gymnasiums, dieticians, etc. However, none of them could give me a sustainable solution.

That is when my quest for a sustainable lifestyle solution began. This not only got me back to healthy living but also made me lay the foundation for Fit4Life. I tried to sort my life with my father's guidance. Genesis of Fit4Life Ours is the only country where carbohydrates turn to fat and insulin is weak resulting in more diabetic problems. We should not ape the west. Fit4Life was established with this understanding and a mission to provide healthy living as a sustainable model. I feel an ideal lifestyle is all about having a good routine, indulging in your favourite food, late-night party once in a while and yet remain healthy. Initial hurdles Many! When we started, we had many seeking weight loss like 3 to 5 kgs in a stipulated time. I realised that people feel that being fit is having a perfect body, an hour glass body (if women) and more. Sad but true! When they look at actors, they aspire to have a body like them but they tend to miss out on the fact that their body has been built over time. Basically, 80-90%, this is the mindset towards healthy living and the balance 20% is diet. I can’t understand how one can refrain from having their favourite food. That would mean self-limiting. I have turned down many clients because they were looking for an instant reduction in weight or drop in the diabetic numbers. I never took up such cases. I want my clients to be ready for a behavioral change

that helps them sustain their health for life. I urge them to come to me only when they are ready to look at life or health in a holistic way. Diet dilemma Every second day, there is a new diet. But statistics of Oxford and couple of other universities have proved that only 1% could get results from such diets and sustain them for long. Our body has a beautiful mechanism which is selfequipped for its functioning. We damage it by not listening to it. For example, if you are eating a lot, it means your body is trying to communicate with you through your food. It is

YOUR BODY KNOWS WHAT IS GOOD OR BAD FOR IT. ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS UNDERSTAND IT.

important to identify whether the reason for eating so much is emotional, physiological or deficiency of nutrition. Weight is just a culmination of what you have done over the years or months and cannot shoot up overnight. People read something somewhere or someone tells them that that diet worked great, and they follow it. One must realise that each body is unique and so is its nutritional requirement. So, there is no good diet or bad diet. There is only suitable diet. Maintaining the same weight for long should be the priority rather than losing it. One must realise that every food has some nutritional value.

Avoiding any particular food would mean not giving your body that particular nutrition. Let's move it Just like food, physical activity is body-specific. Believing that exercise is all you need to stay fit is a myth. Exercising strains and after a certain point it tends to act negatively. For example, many women indulge in excessive exercise and put on a lot of weight. Whatever you eat after such heavy workout remains in your body causing a threat. So, a workout regimen should be designed on parameters like body type, age, lifestyle and more. BMI is not all BMI is not a parameter for good health. It does not take age into consideration. A 90-year-old and a 20-year-old with the same height are expected to be similar. It is not possible. Common lifestyle problems Most of India is either pre-diabetic or on the threshold of it. It bothers women more as it impacts the fertility. With men, it is more about cholesterol, triglycerides and more.

Impact of digital wave You have to understand that when some information is put out there, it could be either based on personal experience or out of research done with hundred people. Hundred samples are not big enough to consider such information. It may or may not work for you. Therefore, one must check on what basis the research was done, who did the survey, for how long and more, and then decide. Work Life balance As I said before, healthy living is a blend of healthy mind & body. Therefore, when not working, I focus on building myself. I have recently started running and cycling. These activities calm my mind. Besides, I try to learn new things. My husband has been a great support. He helped me set up Fit4Life. I love to spend time with my family. When my family needs me, I am with it. Women power I don't believe in pre-conceived notions woven around women.

We are taught to think about others first, So we constantly try to live up to the expectations and neglect our self. I don't believe that a mother must cook for her children. If I don't know cooking, I will hire a cook and get the best for my children. By doing so, we are giving a message to the boy that it's okay if his wife doesn't know how to cook. I believe true women power is all about doing your best without losing your identity. We need to get over this feeling ‘I am a superhuman’ where she tries to do everything. I don't need to prove that I am a great wife, mother or daughter-in-law. Success mantra I strongly believe in what I do. I stay unrufed by failures like losing a client to someone else. Future We are ready for the future and prepared to handle fads that keep popping up in the market. We shall continue to stick to our approach even if it doesn’t become an instant hit. Fit4life is

for life, so I am not in a hurry. In a country with a million plus population, even if we manage to change a thousand families then we consider ourselves successful. We wish to build trust among the people.

T

he otherwise quiet Road No.1 Banjara Hills now has an all new charm. The credit goes to the brand new Musaddilal store. With spell-bounding interiors and designs like never before, this store definitely promises to redefine the trends in jewellery. Musaddilal Jewellers has been a name synonymous with fine jewellery that blends different cultures to create a stunning masterpiece. With a legacy to look up to, it was an obvious choice for Shashank and Rudraksh Gupta to join the family business. However, with a commitment to carry forward the 150-year-old brand Musaddilal, perfectly complementing it with their modern ideas and vigor, the brothers embarked on a fresh and new journey of revamping the identity of brand Musaddilal. In conversation with the brothers who speak on being the heirs of such mind-blowing legacy and the art of jewellery business.

The brand Musaddilal Both: Our grandfather's grandfather, the late Sri.Musaddilal Babaji, was the official evaluator for the Nizams. All the jewels possessed by the Nizams were to get his stamp of approval. But the journey of Musaddilal started way back in 1899. Our ancestors used to sell jewellery, going to the houses. Later, in 1960-70's, our showrooms were set up. We had opened stores in Pattargatti, Basheerbagh and Secunderabad. Now, joining this line is the Banjara Hills store. Formative years Both: We are a big family. Our parents have always been particular about us completing our education. Though we have an age difference of five years, we share a great rapport. Education S: After my graduation, I studied a crash course in jewellery designing at GIE. I earned a Masters degree in Financial Marketing from London School of Business (summer schooling). I even pursued a full-time MBA course at Amity Global Business School. R: I am pursuing my BBA (third year) from Amity Global Business School. Introduction to the art Both: Since we are born in a family, where each and every member is committed to jewellery designing, we have seen this art since our childhood. We recall seeing our father and his brothers taking care of the business under the guidance of my grandfather. From the age of 10, we brothers were sent to the store after returning from the school to observe the sales personnel and learn the art of marketing. The focus was not just on sale but also on establishing a relationship that would, in turn, lead to an association for generations to come. So, by the time we joined the business, we would be all

set and ready to take it forward. Helming the business Both: When we joined nearly seven years ago, we took charge of the operations, sales and marketing. The creative aspects i.e. the designs and make of the jewellery is still taken care by our elders. We are complementing their expertise with our modern approach. Since generations, Musaddilal has built its identity through word of mouth. However, after seeing the changing trends and the growing competition, we slowly adopted digital, print media and on-ground marketing. But the ratio is 80-20, where 80% of our focus is on marketing it the traditional way. Blending thoughts Both: Initially, it was very difficult to convince our elders about the new marketing techniques. Not that they were skeptical of the new trend, but because they have always believed that the best form of marketing is word of mouth, i.e., attend to one customer and convert it into a sale; the same client then refers us to his circle and that is how the chain builds. We also agree to that because all the other marketing tools definitely bring brand visibility and increase in footfalls, but it is word of mouth and customer relationship that lead to a sale. Hence, we combined the word of mouth & modern

marketing modes. Now, if you look at our publicity, it is subtle and classy. Leading the race Both: Firstly, in the current scenario, agreed, there is an increase in the players. But, simultaneously there is an equal increase in the buying capacity and number of buyers. We believe in doing our best and redefining ourselves. So, what really make us stand apart and unique, rather than leading the race, is our years and years of experience, not to mention our exquisite and unique designs. All our pieces are handcrafted and crafted out of the best jewels procured from across the world. We never ever compromise on the quality. The finishing is just impeccable. Last but not the least, it is our period pieces which are single pieces from the Nizams’ design. Our clients refer to our pieces as possessions & style statements.

red | may 2018 | 39

Balancing work and life S: My wife understands the dynamics of this business. In addition, the women of our family are involved in some way or the other in the business. Therefore, they too have a routine. Post work, all of us give time to family. Normally, the days are hectic. But we plan our vacations and short breaks whenever possible.

Success mantra Both: Hard work and constant innovation keep you ahead. Especially, in our industry, an effective sales team is the crux of success. We deal with niche jewelry which is worth lakhs of rupees. Hence, the client buys it only on goodwill and trust. This can be achieved by providing good quality products & services.

R: It is all about college, work and family for me. Since we have been exposed to the business from a very young age, we have mastered the art of balancing work and life.

Future Both: We shall keep growing and do our best. We continue to innovate and surprise and impress the clients with new designs and patterns.

R: I am at work during the second half of the day, since I am occupied at college. My focus is mostly on sales and building the new customer base. Rapport Both: We are very similar in our thought process and share a common vision for the brand Musaddilal which is to live up to the heritage and give the clients only the best. However, as we grow, we aim to nurture the foundation our forefathers had laid in this brand. We generally don’t differ on issues, but even if that happens, we discuss and arrive at a common consensus.

Roles and responsibilities S: Both of us are adept at handling all the departments of the business. I take care of the orders, coordinate with the goldsmiths on the deliverables and the sales. My day starts with checking on the orders, then following up with goldsmiths about the deliverables, attending to clients and focusing on the sales.

I had experience, but being an entrepreneur is a different ball game. I was determined and adamant

to excel in it. If I set my mind to something, I don’t rest untill I achieve it. My desire is to achieve something remarkable. I love to promote innovative ideas and concepts. I used to watch TV ads and wonder if they could have been handled better. I decided to take it upon myself to make them better. That is what made me opt for branding. Hurdles and heartburn Yes, initially, it was very tough. It took four years for me to get this recognition. I was badly mocked, criticised and demoralised by people who told me that I could never do anything on my own, that I didn’t deserve to be an entrepreneur and that I didn’t have a premium education or great looks. One person had the guts to tell me that women can never be successful in this field of business. My communication skills and creative mind were my weapons against my detractors. A client from Delhi gave me a breakthrough. They reposed trust in my abilities. They instilled confidence and conviction in me. That was my stepping stone to go up the ladder. I am eternally indebted to my well-wishers and friends. They have always been my source of inspiration. At last I made up my mind, repeating to myself “I CAN DO IT!”

a simple woman into an entrepreneur. Today, I have the courage and confidence to talk to anyone. But deep down I am still the same. I love to cook different cuisines and expand my palate. I actively participate in all the activities of my church. I love meeting people, sharing experiences and learning from those experiences. Considering that I am a workaholic, it is rare that I sit idle. Whenever time permits I read. I am a voracious reader. Future It means so much to me to help those in need and give back to the community. It is a joy! I love to engage myself in social work and contribute to the common good. On working with Vikram? I am glad I got the opportunity. He is a class apart, no doubt about that.

Do you relate to Amuthavalli? She has a strong personality and clear aspirations. And that is exactly how I am!

Do awards overwhelm you? No, but I am surprised. They make me feel more responsible.

Share your experience at the IPL opening ceremony. Exhilarating! This was my first time. We had the country’s best dancers like Prabhu Deva and Jacqueline. I was on cloud 9 as I represented South India.

The Sridevi Award at the Zee Apsara Awards… We get so involved in movies that we hardly sit back and appreciate our work. So, this was one of the moments where I was just grateful for everything. This award meant a lot since Sridevi always inspired me.

Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Award for Baahubali.. I was elated to receive the award in my hometown. I feel lucky to be part of this globallyrecognised film.

Prithvi Theatre… My association with Prithvi

Tell us about A.B.C. A.B.C. is neither a feature film nor a documentary. It is a social cause-oriented film that will be showcased in various schools.

Seven back-to-back releases, how did you sail through? Yes, there is Kanne Kalaimaane, Naa Nuvve, A.B.C., Khamoshi, Queen Once Again, an untitled Kunal Kohli project & Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy with mega star. They were scheduled in such a way that I could finish them on time. I am a workaholic and don’t take many vacations.

So no missing workouts? No never! I do a lot of functional training; now I am doing yoga. If I want a specific shape, I go for specific diet. I prefer age old homemade recipes.

Unforgettable incident... Vikam and I were shooting in Pondicherry. We decided to go for a run at the Promenade. That was one big ambitious project as we might get spotted by people. Covering ourselves, we went for it. It was a fun run, but people recognised Vikram towards the end.

Actors should… Constantly learn new skills and not repeat previous mistakes. The more you evolve as a person, the better actor you become.

What are your strengths? My ability to adjust as I am not fussy.

How do you handle the success/failure? I don’t dwell too much on either. Of course, I am grateful for what I have achieved.

Affected by the role you play... Some of them require you to dive into them. The involvement becomes a lot to handle. Sometimes, I am drained out.

On learning Telugu… All my training happened while delivering the lines. Now I can speak Telugu better than Sindhi!

On bagging Chand... Producer Salim Akhtar spotted me at my school function and encouraged me to go for an audition. I cleared through.

began when I was quite raw. I thought acting could not be taught in class -rooms, but these platforms help you get rid of inhibitions and gain confidence.

LIFE IS ALL ABOUT UNFOLDING THE UNKNOWN.

Real Tammannah... A foodie; chilled out; loves to entertain people, spend time with family and friends; finds happiness in small things like a long drive.

Essentials to survive? Passion, discipline, consistency and improvisation.

Sacrifices behind glamour You have to put your work above others. In a field of cutthroat competition, you have to be at the top of your game.

Belief in numerology... Yes, I do. I changed the spelling of my name.

Tell us about Wite-n-Gold? It is my father’s business. I chip in as a designer.

Did your parents approve? While my father Mr.Santosh was supportive, my mother Mrs.Rajani was initially not comfortable. She, by and by, understood my passion. They always stand by me.

Any message for red I have been featured before but I am pretty excited that I am on the cover after a really long time. Thank you red!

Advice to upcoming actors Don’t be inuenced by others; go with your gut feeling.

Message to your fans… I am grateful to them for their never-ending love and support for the past 13 years. I hope to live up to their expectations with some out-of-the-box films.

Any interesting fan story? Some of them are really sweet. One of my fans, Himakar, posts creative and unconventional stuff about my team and me. We are very fond of him and eagerly await his next post.

Ten years from now... Hopefully alive and happy. I don’t plan or think about the future. I like the little mystery about tomorrow.
