Go to Paint the Town for that perfect event

Till now she has successfully managed events in many hotels including Hôtel Novotel Visakhapatnam Varun Beach and Hotel Daspalla.

L

aunched in 2016, Paint the Town, Event Planners (that is what they prefer to call themselves), already has a whopping 50 events of all magnitudes to its credit. Yet, “No big deal,” says Bhavana, the managing partner, clearly indicating that she has set high goals for herself and that she would not leave any stone unturned to reach them. Bhavana, an engineer and MBA degree-holder and a former employee of Wipro, has set foot in this profession which is unrelated to her education. Driven by pure passion, and motivated by her husband and partner in the business Ram, she took to this new vocation with great ease.

red | october 2018 | 32

Ask her why should one choose Paint the Town. She comes up with a convincing answer. “The established players often have very big profit margins too. I can give the decor the big players give for much less price, without compromising on its elegance or the essence. Moreover, you will never see me repeating the same decor. Our most applauded speciality is our unique wedding invitation box which accommodates pasupu-kumkuma and sweets,” says Bhavana. Comparable price is her USP and her clientele vouches for her budget-friendly planning.

Stating that the customer satisfaction is her prime objective, she says, “Till date, I did not go for any advertisement whatsoever. All my customers have come to me only through word-of-mouth. That itself speaks for the quality of my work and my calibre.” Bhavana, who outsources most of the components in her events, says they are the most trust worthy vendors and never did she face any issues as they deliver goods on time and to the satisfaction of her clientele. So, when you have an event at home next time, all you need to do is to pick up your phone and call Paint the Town. For more info tap www.paintthetown.in

“We have seating capacity for 23 now. But going by the response, we soon have to expand and we even have to add a few tables to satiate locals, who prefer to sit in comfort even if it is for a snack. We will be very soon adding mini pancakes to the menu,” he adds. The five-member team seems to have their hands full. They offer an exhaustive range for which the raw material comes from Mumbai. A couple can have their fill spending Rs.300. Swiggy, Zomato and Uber Eats can reach the Belgian Waffle Co. delicacies wherever you are. DILIGENT EDUCATIONIST

T

he life trajectory of someone, who was born in J&K Army base, brought up in Pune, educated in Allahabad, Ambala and Assam, and married

and settled in Vizag, ought to be interesting with poignant twists and turns, events and excitement. That too, for an accomplished educationist who heads renowned Delhi Public School, Anandapuram, there is never a dull day. Dr. Eshwari Prabhakar, with nearly three-decades of experience as an academic, made it to the top through steps of diligence and dedication. It is her vision and administrative acumen that reached the school to enviable heights. “It is team effort that made the school reach the 2nd position in Education World India School Rankings,” she says in all humility. She is known for her extraordinary virtues and values and is, justifiably, bestowed with an array of awards. Her rules are simple, method is straightforward. She believes, “It is continuous efforts, not strength or intelligence, that helps us unlock our potential.” She leads by example. Here is Dr.Eshwari, her persona, her charisma and her facility.... EXCERPTS You are a Smart Principal of the Smart City. What is your take on Smart School? A school with a smart board and a smart projector alone cannot be defined as Smart School. It has to constantly comply with the demands and challenges of a rapidly changing, and hi tech global environment. Learning has to be made memorable and enjoyable. Effective and efficient

use of technology in administration; communication with stakeholders; academic transactions and providing a platform for the students to interact productively with their peers and academics globally- these are the factors that make a school smart. Students should be exposed to interdisciplinary and cultural education. Smart School pedagogy should aim to make teaching and learning process

interesting, motivating and stimulating. It has to prepare students to be lifeready and progressive global citizens. Journey with DPS I entered DPS as a teacher in nineties facing a daunting competition and a volley of tough questions by erudite panelist. But, to my great delight and relief, soon I fell in step with the school’s motto ‘Service before self.’

GREAT Vision •

To lay the foundation of excellence and to provide comprehensive educational experience that empowers students to become life-long learners and be responsible global citizens. To enable them to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing global society.

* To enable the students to hone the 21st Century skills- the 4 Cs-Critical thinking, Communication, Collaboration & Creativity. To achieve all this, I evolved principles of governance, responsibility, ethics, accountability and transparency (G-R-E-A-T). The toughest task Bringing heterogeneous minds on to one platform is the most difficult part of my job because every student who walks through my door is different. Disciplining students I achieve it by understanding my students and being a role model for them with a positive presence. I treat students with the same respect as I expect them to give me. Unique contribution •

Encouraged peer learning and evaluation through Buddy Groups.

Designed a system that fosters free mind, besides academic and personal growth. This helps them actualise, evaluate their experiences, learn to fearlessly question and think independently.

Classroom is designed to

allow an easy interaction between teacher and students •

I facilitate a perfect blend of academics, sports and culture to enhance their physical, mental & spiritual growth.

Encourage to participate in scholastic & co-scholastic activities.

Boondh, a community outreach programme, which cultivates empathy and responsibility towards society.

Winds of change We are in for a drastic change. Revolutionary steps are taken to achieve affordable and high quality education. Transformational changes have been giving a tremendous push to research and innovation. Rationalisation of syllabus is yet another good move. Digital

Education: Then and now Those who attended school in 70s and 80s know the hassles we had. Parents would take even our domestic escapades to our teachers and we would get punished for them. Those days there were more government schools compared to private ones. Blackboard was the only instructional devise. Education is measurably better now with lots of resources in hand. Now schools have ample facilities; notable among them is the digital textbooks. The only sad part is children stay glued to smart phones, whereas we used to play outdoors. Today’s parents play a pro-active role in the children’s education compared to our parents. They take part in parent-teacher meetings, take care of their extra-curricular activities and keep a close watch on the child. Today's child is more protected and pampered than ever before and is of course, brighter and smarter too. Advice to teachers Teacher must ignite that spark in the student to make him/her think intensively. When the students say “I don’t get it”, “This is so hard”, “I don’t want to do this”, the teachers have to figure out how they can support and encourage them. Advice to parents Raise the child the way you were brought up. Parent and child need to spend time together to build precious memories that bind them and last for a lifetime. Get children to maintain a study schedule. The vital log makes them responsible and accountable. Women at the helm In addition to our latent leadership skills, we are also blessed with patience, commitment, empathy and all that leader material. Personal journey My father Mr.P.A.Rao, who served in the Army, was a strict disciplinarian. My mother Mrs.Nagamani and us (four children)travelled with him all over India and it gave us an opportunity to study various cultures. I had schooling in Pune and Assam and higher studies in Punjab & Allahabad. I obtained M.Ed and doctorate

degree in Botany. I married Mr.Prabhakar, a businessman and am blessed with two children. Ananth Rohit, a budding entrepreneur, studied B.E and MS from University of New Haven, US and Pooja is studying MBBS in Pune. Indelible memories At personal level- my husband won the best entrepreneur award. To my delight, as a family, we received it together. I cherish that moment. On professional front, my teachers organized a surprise birthday party for me. I was touched by their love and amazed by their efforts. The best gift is they celebrate my birthday on the Mother’s Day. Gratifying moments Rohit’s graduation ceremony; the day my daughter-in-law Sahaja, (a gold medallist in MBA & Asst Manager, HR in HCl tech) entered our family; and when Pooja topped the national entrance exam for medical sciences. At work, whenever students who have made it big in life (which is quite often) tell me that they owe it to the foundation I gave them & when parents tell me that they are at peace as their child is in safe hands.

IN BRIEF

One must have the will to win, the desire to succeed and the urge to exploit one’s full potential. These are the keys that unlock the door to personal excellence.

The purpose of education is to instil belief in young minds that life is not mere academics and examinations. Hence, I encourage them to pursue sports and cultural activities and acquire life skills to become self-reliant.

Never give up on values.

Equip each child with power of knowledge.

Giving back to society’- this occurs to the

satiated rich who dole out the spill over. Is that

the criterion to go generous? “Certainly not”,

says and proves the young PVS Ram Mohan Rao. While others earn before giving, he started giving even before he has earned. He hails from a poverty-stricken agri family of

Davalapeta

village in Srikakulam. There were days when he went without food and slept on the railway platform. The phenomenal change in his life can only be attributed to his commitment to his cause, grit and gumption. At 33, Ram is a youth icon. He transforms innumerable lives in the region with his generous heart and ever-giving hand. He recently stormed into 7 world records, installing 150 statues to mark 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma. He shares his valuable thoughts and narrates his eventful life story.

EXCERPTS Formative years My ‘never-been to school’ parents Mrs.Chandanam and Mr.Venkata Swamy, worked as farm hands and educated me and my brother Sekhar. I earned scholarships that saw me through till I obtained B.Tech degree from the AU Engineering College. My brother stood in the 9th position in the all India CA exams and is now with Infosys. I joined TISCO, Jemshedpur, as a Production Engineer in 2006. But that eight-month stint only had me pining to come back to my village and my karma bhoomi. Idea Using my engineering experience, I developed high quality cement mixing red | october 2018 | 44

y ash, lime and gypsum. Offering livelihood to 25 people, I set up a factory on a a small piece of land given by my grandfather in 2007. I got a grant of Rs.10 lakh under Prime Minister Employment Generation Programme. I grew from strength to strength and started investing in land. I bought an acre of land and to my delight, it yielded lime. Obtaining Mineral Dealer Licence, I got into mining too. Setback I faced a major upheaval in 2010-11 and lost all that I earned. People started criticising me for going into business. Yet, I stood my ground. My objective was to serve people. So nothing could deter me from my path. By God’s grace, 2012 saw me back on my feet.

Ideology ‘Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile,’ is what I live by. Even during my student days, I used to help the students poorer than me, by saving out of my money. The gnawing urge to do something for the less fortunate has remained with me. Adding the initials of my father’s name to my name, I set up PVS Ram Mohan Rao Foundation in 2010. I started my activities with distributing clothes to the poor during Sankranthi. Spirit & Spirituality I am a spiritual person and a devotee of Lord Siva. I feel a place of worship is the need of the hour to inculcate discipline in the youth. My first noteworthy contribution to my village was the Siva Temple.

Healthcare To take healthcare to the doorstep of the villagers, I built a Rs.5 crore and 50-bed PVS Ram Mohan Rao Hospital in Pondur. My wife Dr.Sujatha heads the gynaecology wing. Here the entire treatment including investigations and medicines is given free. I am building another 60-bed hospital in Ranasthalam, which will be inaugurated in a few months. Education I have established libraries for which I supply the infrastructure, besides books. Every year I select five needy students and finance their higher studies. I take a commitment from each of them to educate five others, so that the chain remains unbroken. Unforgettable incident A student from Sarvakota got a seat in Tripple IT, besides a call from NASA. When I heard that he gave up all this due to lack of money, I took up a day-long journey to his place to give him required money. I feel proud that he is now working at NASA.

Success mantra I believe that the God rewards those who serve others. He blesses the benevolent with enough so that they can share it with others. There is no investment like service. Is politics next step? I have no plans to tread that path for the time being. I may lend an indirect support to leaders, but that is all. I do agree that politics helps you reach a larger audience. But I am against it in its present condition where a vote is given in lieu of a liquor bottle or a wad of notes and not for service rendered. If only politicians spare a thought for the people on whose steam they are in those chairs, things would improve vastly. Rich become richer and poor, poorer, your take Corruption is the worst ill gnawing the very roots of our country. If we can arrest it and people devote at least a wee bit of their time and resources to welfare activities, we are bound to become the number one country. I don’t agree with the argument that a few individuals cannot bring about this transformation. Leading by example, I try to change the mindset of the youth.

Youth power We have a strength of 2,000 youth behind us. At least 1500 of them converge whenever I organise a welfare activity. For better tomorrow I feel people should learn to respect their gurus and elders, who are the path-finders. The youth should be constantly reminded of their ideologies. That is why, I insist on having statues of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Babasaheb Ambedkar in every nook and statues of Mother Saraswati in educational institutions. Clean image I am transparent in my activities and make it loud and clear that I take no donations from anyone. All the funds for my activities come purely from my earnings. Support system My wife Dr.Sujatha obtained her degree from AMC and pursued PG from NRI Medical College, Mangalagiri. I shared my ideas and ideology with her even before we got married in 2014. Luckily, she is in perfect sync with my thoughts and her being a doctor added value to our service.

Future plans • We are coming up with a Rs.50 cr and 200-bed hospital in Srikakulam. • An orphanage • A home for the aged. • An agri-based food processing unit to generate employment for farmers • A unique Siva temple, reecting the essence of Pancha Kshetralu

New

twinkle star in the tinsel sky By Reeth Choraria

T

he young and aspiring Mumbaikar, Riya Suman, has already made her mark

with her very first film Majnu. She continues to wow us with her performance in Paperboy. Like many of her ilk, she too walked the advertisement path to reach the destination- cinema. She neither had a filmy background nor a nurturing godfather to fall back on. Hence, it is sheer talent, hard work and love for acting that helped her get to where she is. In a long distance interview, she talks of her short yet successful journey. Her voice was full of mirth and her talk full of exuberance. I cannot say if it was my being in the same age group that helped us strike an easy rapport or was it her warmth and ever welcoming attitude that kept the dialogue flowing. But it was a very happy & enriching experience to talk with the lady, with whom I hope to have a face-to-face some time in future. Wishing her all the best for her future, I present her here.

Tell us a little about yourself I was born and brought up, and am based in Mumbai, where I did my schooling and college. My father Mr.Surendra Rai is a businessman and mother Mrs.Suman is a home-maker. I have a younger brother who is a writer and two younger sisters. Interestingly, all of us are ardent lovers of films. My parents are very supportive and have always allow me to pursue my dreams, whatever they are. From Priyashri to Riya Suman Yeah, I debuted as Priyashri. I faced an identity crisis as there are a lot of Priyas in the industry. Eventually, people started addressing me with my original name Riya and by the time we wrapped up Paperboy, I was Riya for everyone and people forgot Priyashri and I too chose to go with my original name. How did you get into acting? Well, I realised acting is my calling. I was regular at school and college plays and stage activities. It may sound ironical but I used to be shy and reserved but once But on stage I was totally uninhibited. I did a short acting course in the renowned Anupam Kher’s Acting School to hone my

skills. But I must say that one can learn the craft only after reaching the sets. I am still a work in progress actor. How did you bag your first film? I had given a lot of auditions for endorsements and movies and had done quite a few ad campaigns. One of those stints brought me to Hyderabad, where I auditioned for Majnu. I met the director of the film through a coordinator. What was originally intended to be just a casual meeting turned into a full-length audition. I was given quite a few scenes to enact and had to go through the entire process of posing for stills etc. Later, director Virinchi Varma narrated the story of Majnu. I returned home and was back to college attaching very little importance to the entire thing. After a considerable time, and to my utter disbelief, I got a call asking me to y to Hyderabad to meet the producer. And boom! I got the role. Struggles Nothing that is out of the way. One has to go through the grind to march ahead on any path. I had given and still give a lot of auditions. Practice makes man perfect stands good here too.

I went through a gamut of experiences. The tests can be quite trying- like we have to act without taking any props or assistance and make it look real and believable, and now I have mastered the art. I did face a lot of rejections and heart burns but that is the part of the game. On the Paperboy experience... It was amazing! The entire cast was very young and passionate, like me. So I hit off very well with every one of them. Since we were all new to the field, we realised that we had to work extra hard to perfect our act. Off the sets too, we used to gather and have a free exchange of views. It was a great pleasure working with them. It is said the first impression lasts forever. So each of us tried to give our cent percent to our roles. Worth mentioning is our bonding, the team spirit and the creative exchange. The atmosphere was conducive for all of us to bloom. Any fun memories? It was fun and frolic all through. But I recall one rainy evening. As the cameras were not working, we were forced to take a break. We

sat around talking, talking and talking over tea and snacks. Of course, it all revolved round films right from- Maya Bazaar to Arjun Reddy. Since I was a kind of an ‘alien’ in the industry, I got to learn a lot about the Telugu films. We did have a few Tamilians in the group who threw in a little about their industry as well. Did you dub for the film? How was the experience? Unfortunately, I did not. That regret I shall carry forever. I realised that dubbing is an essential part of performance. When I saw my character speaking on the screen, I realised the gap between my original voice and modulation and that of the person who dubbed. I even pointed it out to my director that it was not me there. I hope to do my own dubbing very soon. Filmi background or godfather must to be in the industry? Undoubtedly, some handholding does help. But we have to do our homework and sweat it. One has to build good contacts by meeting people and make oneself visible through auditions, advertisements and circulating portfolios. Of

Welfare

RAMANA'S

Asaya

transcends

rural confines By V. Sarada

“Often when I execute a welfare activity, But by the time the project and programme reaches the end, I am already planning the next one. Such is my fervor for service. Despite facing innumerable problems and countless hardships, I am at it and I shall continue to be so,” says an incurably service-minded Mr.Reddy Ramana, founder of Asaya Youth Association. This humble effort of a common man from a small village in G.Agraharam, Chipurupalli, has assumed a beautiful shape and is creating great ripples across the district. His unremitting service for more than a decade earned him name, fame and the coveted posts. He now serves as a Member of National Lok Adalalt and Chairman, PHC Development Committee, Karlam, Cheepurupalli mandal. The success has to be attributed to the sheer diligence and dedication of Ramana, who refuses to be deterred by troubles and travails and the nonprofit NGO has created a special niche for itself in the world of welfare activities. Investing nothing but his passion and zeal, he oated Asaya Trust Board on 17th April 2005. A few friends like red | october 2018 | 52

S.V.Applanaidu, S.Apparao, R.Murali, S.Ramu, Siva, P.Ramu, K.Paidraju, S.Sriramulu and M.Lakshmana Rao fell in step with him. Ramana’s enthusiasm was so contagious that more and more people, especially students, joined his mission. Expanding its scope and activities, he renamed the organisation as Asaya Youth Association on 1st Jan 2012. Now an 8 member-panel runs it on the doles given by a few philanthropists. Ramana himself sets aside Rs.2,000 out of the meagre Rs.10,000 he earns per month, working as a technical assistant at a local library. Ask him how he manages to keep both the ends meet, he says, “I have a small farm which yields enough grain for me, my wife and two children. There are so many people who don’t even have this facility.”

“Do not fret over difficult times. They may be merely preparing you for bigger things,” says a thinker. That is what happened to Ramana. The dismal conditions in which he spent his childhood have become his inspiration to look at life and the world in a very unique way. He says, “I lost my parents at a very young age. My early life had given me not only hardships but also many valuable lessons. It had brought me face to face with many ills plaguing our society in general and my village in particular. The lack of awareness about health, hygiene and medical facilities disturbed me a lot. Hence, I decided to do my bit in reaching the necessary knowledge to the ignorant poor. Initially I set out with an aim to create awareness about environment and health. I later added education too to my gamut of activities.”

“I started searching for a source of help and realised that the best way to get the message across to people is through the youth. Thanks to them, I am successfully carrying out health, plantation and national integration camps; bioscience exhibitions, essay, elocution and drawing competitions, quiz programmes, mock tests for various exams and most importantly, cremations/burials of the abandoned dead and people who died in old age homes. We serve the poor and needy, chipping in whenever there is a natural calamity.” His post- Hudhud services were widely applauded.

Pained by these rants, Vice-President M.Venkaiah Naidu cautioned the leaders that using abusive language would only hurt the image of politicians. Lamenting the deterioration in standards of political dialogues, he said that he and his opponents too locked horns in healthy discussions on issues of public concern, but never did they use harsh words nor did they make any personal attacks. "This kind of speeches undermine democratic values and the spirit of our country," he insisted. I hope the leaders heed to his advice.

Chef Ahmed says, "I started my journey as a chef in 2004. Right from the beginning, I have been the one to set up the place. So be it with Waterfront, Hard Rock or various other national and international restaurants, I have had the privilege of working with the best. After a successful stint in Scotland, I decided to come back to India. I worked in many restaurants in Chennai as head chef and as a consultant. In 2016, I joined Jubilee Dine which owns Affair. Over these 14 years and with working experience as a Chef, I have witnessed a major technological revolution in the commercial kitchens worldwide. It is just like we switched from a basic mobile phone to a smart phone. Chefs and restaurant owners are open to adopting better ways of cooking and application methods in their kitchens. Millennial entrepreneurs are welcoming techniques which not just benefit the restaurant business but also bring a new vibe to the taste and look of the food that they serve to their customers.

I still remember the manual kitchens, with the traditional set up where cooking a dish every time the right way with the signature taste was a task in itself. However, with technology touching every part of our lives, the traditional kitchen too went for an evolution bringing out various equipment. This developments made cooking a hassle-free job. Talking about kitchen technology and the advanced equipment, I feel the German make Rational combi ovens are a must have for any chef to be successful. I have been using it in all my kitchens and say the experience has been just getting better and better. We prepare some of our signature dishes at Affair in Rational. All need to do is set everything i.e. ingredients, time and that's all, the dish is ready as per my specification. The good part is that this equipment has been making cooking easier and better. Initially, I had to punch in the settings, later came the digital touch equipment and now I can

just preset everything and equipment would serve the dish hot and tasty. Last but not the least, the amazing feature of Rational that surprises me is that it can cook diverse items like vegetables, chicken, rice etc. all at a time without affecting either of the item's texture, taste and nutrition. In short, despite all of them being together in the same oven, each dish is taken care individually. No wonder I prefer cooking in Rational.

ada rag p a th

Childhood We moved from Kolkata to Hyderabad in 1999 and ever since we made it our home. Though my father has been a successful entrepreneur, we have always been into simple living and have never made any song and dance about the financial or societal status we enjoy. I was an average student but certainly a go-getter since my childhood. Also, I believed in being an all-rounder. The glamour world I was pursuing my Bachelors degree in St. Xavier Kolkata when my father moved to Hyderabad, giving me no option to stay back. Hence, I took my Bachelors degree in commerce here. Sadly, the curriculum was basic and something that I had finished in my first year in St.Xaviers. That made me lose interest in college. I took part in Mr.Twin City, a beauty pageant and won it. This casual attempt at modeling had turned into my career for three years. I have walked for many fashion shows and worked for many national and international brands. I was selected for Mr.Grasim but missed the title. Turning point My father set a condition that if I won Mr. Grasim title, I could stay back in Mumbai & pursue my modeling career or otherwise I should go back to Hyderabad and the family business. Winning is only a probability but giving your best is the possibility. So I went ahead and gave my best, but due to some reasons I missed the title. So, it was time to live up to the deal. Anyway, having

seen the glamour world closely, I don't regret my choice of moving away from it. Birth of Meraqee My father has been into the plywood business for more than two decades. We had six outlets spread across the city. My exposure and experiences made me align my energies, passion, dreams and reality into one line. Added to it, is my passion for everything splendid and beautiful. I conceptualized Meraqee. The name itself was inspired by the Greek word, Meraki, which describes an effort taken out of love or soul. Hence, the tagline is Give life to living. I understood that I could live up to my expectations only when I have time for all my clientele, my family and myself. This would not be possible if I have six stores to manage. I also realized that personal interaction makes a difference in a retail business. In 2012, I lost my mother and I had to devote a lot of time to my father who is a great asset for me. So, we closed all branches and decided to run only this store and a godown. Agenda I do business from my heart and therefore, the focus has been always to earn enough to keep my family and the business going. Anything that is earned above is a bonus. Thankfully, the store is doing well and has received that love and appreciation of peers,

architects & general audiences. Earlier, my life used to be divided between work and leisure. But with Meraqee, that dividing line has just disappeared. USP This store is not all about trade , sales and footfall but a place that nurtures ties and values. The place is well planned and you often find the clients playing ludo or Zinga after their shopping. They may have not placed any order, but spend leisure time, enjoying the beverages or snacks I offer. My true wealth is goodwill. Coming to products, I handpick unique designs and home decor options of high quality. Our best USP is the space on the terrace which is named Open Minds. The non-commercial space is a IF I AM ABLE TO IMPACT EVEN ONE PERSON, I AM SUCCESSFUL. TRUE WEALTH IS THE GOODWILL EARNED. platform for people to showcase their talents, groups to share knowledge and to hold educative programmes for children. Competition I have created this space to live life on my terms. I know from the conventional way, Meraqee doesn't look commercially viable. Thankfully, my father, wife and family understand me. Therefore, the ever existing competition never worries me. I am not here to harm others’ business. I am ready to face and overcome any challenge that comes my way. If I offer competitive price, my competitor is taken care of. I do my best. Neither do I fret over or bother about the results.

Self assessment I am a voracious reader. Books and poems have the capacity to impact life. Two poems- If by Rudyard Kipling and The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost- changed my life to a great extent. I have been part of Young Indians, was the Chairman of Hyderabad chapter that enabled me to travel extensively & meet people. It helped me pick up a lot of good things. In pursuit of happiness, we often miss out on living our life; fail to spend time with our family & ignore small pleasures and emotions. I am a person with humble dreams of having enough money to live a comfortable life, have my loved ones around to share my happiness and sorrows. I love traveling. I strive to share my learning with people and ready to learn from others. I feel successful if I can impact even a person's life. Parenting With two daughters Aveka (6.5 yrs) and Avyanna (1.5 yrs), my house is rather a woman-dominated one with my father and I in minority. When Tripty is out, Aveka takes charge of the house. Also, whenever I and

Tripty fight and if I am at fault, I say sorry to her to make my kids understand that whoever is at fault must give in and also to convey that disagreement doesn't mean lack of love. We ensure our kids are away from mobiles, iPads etc. They are exposed to creative learning and human interaction. They are very close to my father. We don’t give any importance to religion or caste. We are god loving and not god fearing. Way forward I shall pursue photography. On the professional front, I want to learn branding and digital marketing. So, I am learning about robotics, automation and Internet of Things to understand how they can be incorporated into my business.

When I decided to get married, the one thing that I wanted in my wife was simplicity and Tripty is just that and she hasn't changed over the years. She has stood by me in all my endeavors and has been taking care of the family and my children when I am out on business. Formative years I am a total Hyderabadi. I was born and brought up in Secunderabad. I belong to a conventional and conservative joint family of which my father is the head. As his daughter, all my formative years, I was expected to be a role model, who has to set an example to the rest of the family. At any point of time, we had nearly 30 to 40 people at home and the three months summer vacation used to y away in the wink of an eye. I had a disciplined life.

Marriage and foraying into a corporate life I was barely 20 when I got married. Yet, I have always been a woman with an independent mind. So post my marriage, I did pursue my higher education and did the Goldman Sachs programme with ISB and later, went to Japan to do corporate management and workplace discipline. I joined our family business - Gubba Cold Storage which was started by my fatherin-law Mr.Nagendra Rao. I joined as a director and also headed the bi-monthly magazine Gubba

Seed News that spoke about all the latest trends, technologies and concerns in the agricultural industry. After working for 9 years with my home concern, I took the decision to have my own enterprise & run it on my steam. The quest for creativity When I was involved in our family business, things were going smooth. Yet, the desire to have my own venture kept haunting me. Also, when you are part of the family business, everything is in place. I was reaching a point of saturation.

When I decided, to take the next step, things looked a bit hazy. That was when my mentor (can't disclose the name) guided me in the right direction and helped me discover my passion. I have always been a creative person and was good at things like Diwali decorations and ower arrangements. I have a keen eye for colours, combinations and textures. People around me often complimented me for my fashion sense. That led to the launch of Rajyalakshmi Heritage Banaras Sarees. The Banaras tales I had fallen in love with Banarasi weave at a very young age. My mother had a couple of saris in bright colours with beautiful finishing. I wanted to bring these traditional weaves into limelight. I decided this one night and the very next morning I was in Kolkatta to check out the market. Then I realized Allahabad was the place. I immediately went there and explored the options. Within 15 days the label was up. I did an extensive research and was all set to go. Ifs and buts I knew that bringing the Banarasi weaves to the south market was a perfect idea as ours is a Kanchi-dominated market. However, there are many who love Banarasi saris but sadly three years ago there was no proper place to pick an authentic sari. I wanted to be that source. The major challenge was to find the right weavers. Varanasi is a highly power-loom dominated. There was a time when the weavers

were in thousands but now the numbers have come down to 100s. I wanted only handlooms as I am committed to the weavers. I respect their art and hard work. Once you find the right weavers, the next challenge is to win their trust. They must accept you as a reliable vendor. They should be paid their worth and on time. I make sure that they are paid on time. Also, whenever I go to meet my weavers, I take something for their families and children.

difficult to sustain the business. I am not a money-driven businesswoman. This is my passion and my focus is on propagating Banarasi weaves. Therefore, irrespective of what the market trends are, I stick to this fascinating threads.

The other side of the coin. End buyers still don't understand the difference between

products of power loom and handloom. There are many duplicates in the market which are available at a much lesser price. Often customers prefer to buy them, instead of the authentic ones. The mindset is- "I would wear the sari for four or five times why should I spend more?" They still don't understand the uniqueness and heritage attached to handlooms. Therefore, I constantly try to make my clients understand that handlooms are not just any piece of cloth but are symbols of our rich heritage that can be passed on to generations as a legacy. However, I am happy that amidst all this there are genuine lovers and buyers of Banarasi saris. Business and Passion Yes, if you look at it from the conventional angle then it is

understand the various types of weaves. There are nearly 12 to 15 techniques of weaving in Banarasi like Tanchui, Kewa, Kadwa, Jangla, Jamdani. All of them are unique and can be adopted on saris and lehengas. You will find almost all of them in existance. So, whenever someone comes to my store, we explain the history behind the sari and the technique used. That is where I am different from others. My focus is on bringing authentic weaves and educating my clients. In short, I have recreated a small Banaras in my store. I am sure people, looking for authentic Banarasi sari, know where to go in the city. Also, when people are picking saris at my store, I never let the monetary angle rule. We genuinely guide our clients and tell them what suits them the best, even if it means selling a piece that is lesser in price compared to the one they picked up.

Future After Hyderabad, the plan is to move to different cities with Bangalore being the next. The larger aim is to Banarasi weaves to as many cities as possible. My most precious dream is to participate in Lakhme Fashion Week and showcase the power and charm of Banarasi weaves.

A piece of advice to peers Don't let success get to your head. Stay grounded & you shall excel. Whatever you do, do it with heart. Memorable moment: A weaver gifted me a sari with a new design he had made. My eyes welled up with tears.

HER THOUGHTS •

Being self-driven is a virtue. Men or women, if you want something, just go for it.

Women empowerment doesn't mean demeaning men.

Success can be achieved only through hard work.

MY LABEL HAS BEEN SURGING FORWARD. I AM NOT HERE TO COMPETE.

Personal note I make sure I get my Me timebe it sipping my coffee for 10 minutes or taking a solo holiday. I go for movies all alone. I am a bindaas and a simple person. I don't mind buying other designer wear. I love cooking for my family. Happily married for 15 years, I have a beautiful family. My husband Prashanth lends me a great support. I have two lovely boys Krishiv (14 years) and Amogh (10 years). Both are highly disciplined and entered Guinness Book and the Limca Book of Records excelling in gymnastics. I have learnt a lot of things from my dear children.

Mantra for life Do your best. Success or failure is within you. When you put in hard work, your success is guaranteed. So, it's all "YOU."

CONVENTIONAL ONE. HAVING SAID THAT, I AM HAPPY THE WAY

Preserving weavers Imagine a sari woven in some remotest city of Allahabad is getting a buyer in Hyderabad. Yes, there is a great change in the people’s perception of handlooms and it impacts the weavers. But it is time we preserved the existing weavers and encourage the next generation to take it up so that the coming generations enjoy the heritage. I keep telling the weavers to keep up their work. I strive to provide a lot more scope and monetary benefits to them.

Balancing work and life I am blessed because my children became independent at a very young age and this helps me focus on my business. It is easy to strike a balance if you know how to manage your time and if you are disciplined. My routine is in place with every aspect of my life given dedicated time. Sunday is the cheat day and for the family. Saturday is absolutely for me and my husband.

I AM NOT IN THE RACE AS I DON'T LOOK AT MY BUSINESS AS A

Facing competition I am not in the race as I don't look at my business as a conventional one. Having said that, I am happy the way my label has been surging forward. I am not here to compete. Starting my business from home with 27 saris to having my stand-alone boutique catering to more audience makes me happy.

Prashanth Saboo has the

acumen of a businessman in his DNA. However, he did well in academics too. This combination of inherent trade skills and education gave him that extra edge to take over the reins of the established Saboo Motors. He came into business not because he was the legal heir but because he was the perfect successor. In conversation with Prashanth who talks about life and business with clarity.

When did you enter the family business? Saboo is the brainchild of my grandfather, who entered the automobile industry along with my father. He began dealing with Luna more than four and a half decades ago. Saboo was a sole dealer for Luna and revolutionized the Hyderabad two-wheeler market with Chal meri Luna to such an extent that in social circles we are even now called as Lunawale Saboo. I joined the business in 1995 red | october 2018 | 38

as an intern, my father put me into door to door marketing and auto spare parts’ sale. Was it a good start? With no knowledge of the local language Telugu, going shop to shop with an auto driver and an elderly helper to sell spare parts in Hyderabad was not at all a happy feeling. I understood that my father did not want me to join ofďŹ ce before completing my postgraduation. However, I stood my ground and put all my

efforts into selling auto spare parts and learned whatever little Telugu I could, to get the message across to the customers. Later, my father put me in sales of Greaves Garuda Autos which gave me excellent experience. After completing my postgraduation, I was made the Sales Incharge for Kinetic mopeds. It helped me learn customer handling and I slowly grew in the ranks to handle the team, vendors, bankers/ďŹ nanciers, etc. The journey continued till 2005. By that time, I learned every aspect of the automobile business and was set to start my own journey.

How was it being on the home ground? When I joined Saboo Motors, I never enjoyed any special privileges. My father used to give me a pocket money of Rs.2,000. That is enough to tell me that I should not expect any red carpet to be unrolled for me . I started from the lowest level and have learned the nuances of the business like any other beginner. I had my set of challenges, but surmounted them. I learnt to interact and connect with the customers and the rest, as they say, is history. How did you got into dealership? In 2005, I got the dealership of Suzuki two-wheelers. The process of learning & handling the entire process of setting up the dealership was not only challenging but also exciting. In 2006, I ventured into the field of construction. I set up Suzuki and bagged a few construction projects. Tell us about your next step Later, with my experience and reputation of Saboo family, I pitched for Hyundai dealership in 2013. I got the confirmation in Jan 2014. The Hyundai dealership came into operations in June 2014 and since then we have grown from strength to strength. Within a span of 4 years, we have managed to cater to more than 25000 happy customers and are continuing with our march. We are also dealers for Yamaha two-wheelers, Force Motors and Kinetic e-vehicles. Today, we have Hyundai, Suzuki,

Yamaha and Force Motors showrooms spread across the city catering to one and all. Tell us about your collaborations with Suzuki and Hyundai. The Suzuki association with Saboo, gave a new meaning to the two-wheeler customers in Hyderabad market. Our focus on providing value-packed products and Saboo’s unending customer-centric service made us the number one dealer in the twin cities. The Hyundai association with Saboo brought together the finest and most sturdy ‘Value Packed cars.’ With Saboo’s single-minded focus to woo the customer with impeccable service & customer satisfaction under one roof made Saboo Hyundai one of the most beloved dealers in the market.

great customer service. Our staff ensures to provide the best to our customers. Also, I have an open cabin policy where customers can directly walk-in and meet me with their needs or feedback. This is what makes us different. Saboo family: Once a customer purchases a vehicle he becomes a part of the Saboo family. Trust for generations: Just as the brand value has been passed on over generations, the customers’ trust and bond with our brand too are passed on to generations. There have been instances where the father, who had bought a vehicle from us comes to us, brining along his son or daughter to buy the next vehicle. That itself speaks for the volumes of good well and name we have built. How do you handle competition? I think, competition is my reality check and they act as a mirror to our performance. They keep us on our toes, the same way as we keep our competitors on theirs. However, the future has its own challenges, the competition is not with the other dealers any more. It is with social media platforms like Google, Facebook etc. that play a key role in the customers' decision making.

How do you lead change? Out of the dealership & Original Equipment Manufacturer(OEM) model of business, the OEM is a stronger brand compared to the dealership brand. OEM has a deep pocket. The customer is the king: We keep our focus on our ability to keep the customer at the center of all our activities. We consider them as our brand

Tell us about the milestones you have crossed Having lakhs of happy customers is a tremendous milestone we have crossed. I am confident we shall add many more. This certainly motivates us. The regular awards for performance from the principals on YOY basis are very valuable for us.

What is your advice to budding entrepreneurs?\ a.

Know your customer and cater to them on time.

b.

Have a risk-taking appetite. There is nothing safe or risky. Just take a calculated step with the available information. When you look back you will see a lot of hits and misses. That is what makes the entire entrepreneurship fun and exciting.

c.

What are the challenges of being in the industry? Every industry has its own set of challenges which are unique in nature. For instance, this market is solely driven by customers’ emotions and sentiments. Indian customers are value conscious as they want the best for the money they spend. The products keep changing quite rapidly compared to the previous generations. There are a very few companies which get this right, as in the past, there were many companies which have perished as they did not change with the changing trends. Therefore, the biggest challenge is to constantly evolve and unlearn the past to embrace the changing trends. What are the lessons you learnt? Every day is a new day, new learning, new challenge and new experience. Each and every customer adds memories and experiences. What about the road ahead? At Saboo, we believe that customer is the center of all our activities. Saboo is one group that caters to all mobility and lifestyle related products and services. red | october 2018 | 40

Be prepared for the worst. It is not pessimism but being practical.

Mantra for life. I keep a healthy regimen. I regularly exercise, eat healthily, meet friends more often. Life will just happen! Please tell us about your childhood and early life. I belong to a conventional joint Marwari family. Traditionally, all of us are expected to focus on business. But my people have always given importance to education. My grandfather wanted me to purse a postgraduation degree in finance. While I was doing my graduation in Badruka Colege, my friends would work with their family businesses. I joined NIIT to study a 2-year course and got a gold medal. I learnt basic accounting from my grandfather the late Mr.Ramdayal ji and customer handling from my uncle Vinay. Yet, my people feared that if I started counting money,

I THINK, COMPETITION IS MY REALITY CHECK AND THEY ACT AS A MIRROR TO OUR PERFORMANCE. THEY KEEP US ON OUR TOES, THE SAME WAY AS WE KEEP OUR COMPETITORS ON THEIRS. CUSTOMER IS THE KING.

d.

Believe in the power of marketing. Ensure your brand visibility is done effectively.

e.

Explore technology. I have always been an follower of technology and I keep a track of the latest. You will be surprised to see how technology can redefine your business and your attitude too.

What is your success mantra? There are no shortcuts to success. One has to keep one’s head down and go through the grind. But one should not forget to have fun, meet more people and make more friends on the way.

I would stop studying. I finally convinced them only after I promised them that I would do double MBA and come out with distinction. I did my MBA in finance from Osmania University and pursued Post Graduation Diploma in Marketing and International trade, attending evening classes in Rajendra Prasad Institute of Management.

has lead to a tremendous change in the perception of publicity and business marketing. However, at Vysya Business Network (VBN), the team has managed to make the traditional style of word of mouth marketing still relevant. One idea of Shiva Kumar Emmadi supported by a team of like-minded people laid the foundation to VBN network that is now a body of more than 150 members making approximately Rs.300 cr of business per annum. As the network spreads its wings with more business heads joining in, the members of VBN thought of a platform that would help enterprises to showcase their brands and network. Driven by this thought, an 8-man team was formed which crafted Utsav Bazar, a multi-business exhibition. As Utsav Bazar gears up for a grand launch in November, we speak to the business heads, Shiva Kumar Emmadi (Founder and Launch President-VBN, Brand Custodian- Utsav Bazar, CEO- ONS IT solutions), Abhishek (Co-founder VBN, Expo Chairman- Utsav Bazar, Director- Kalasha Jewels) Srikar (APEX chairman- VBN, Launch Coordinator- Utsav Bazar, CEO- Global Tree (Immigration Consultation), Kautike Vittal (Chief Insurance Advisor- LIC of India,

Inception We were planning an event to mark VBN’s anniversary. This will also be a platform to create opportunities for businesses to showcase themselves and network. Now VBN is spread across Hyderabad with nearly 150 members, but we want to expand the base to increase their network not just in the city but nationwide. So we conceptualised Utsav Bazar. together brands from the four major industries i.e. Lifestyle, Jewelry, Infrastructure, and allied. The name We thought that in India, October and November are the festive months, with Diwali & Dasara coming back to back. During the festivals, it is not just the lady of the house, but the whole family comes out to shop. As the event is happening in this season, showcasing all kinds of products, it is named Utsav Bazar. Implementation Everyone of us was sold on this idea

and excited about it. We are geared for it. We need a dedicated team that would be taking care of every aspect of the implementation. We have a core team in place. Here, 2 aspects need our attention- one the marketing of the overall concept and second, ďŹ lling the stalls. We have dedicated personnel taking care of them. We also ensure that brands bring in an exclusive collection to the exhibition. Visibility Coming to the overall marketing, we know that these days, Jo diktha hai, vahi biktha hai (only that is visible,

sells). We have gone head-on into the branding and publicity of the exhibition by tapping almost every marketing tool. However, due attention has been paid not to sound loud or all over. In short, we would say, we are focusing more on targeted marketing. Planning 75 stalls with proper brand visibility to each participant is a task in itself. Therefore, we have tied up with United Exhibitions (one of the most successful event planners) to design Utsav Bazar. Thus, it is loud and clear that we have put our best foot forward and are striving to make it a grand shopping experience. USP Firstly, as mentioned, Utsav Bazar is a multi-business exhibition that would see brands from across the country. Also, we have made an effort to have the right mix of industries and also the right mix of local and non-local brands. As soon as we launched the concept, there were many businesses that showed interest to put up their stall at the exhibition. We had a stringent QC process in place and the businesses/brands were handpicked to ensure that they are trustworthy and have the range of products and services that would cater to the target audience. We did this because we believe that VBN network as a business network and as a brand enjoys credibility in the market. Therefore, when we absorb any other brand on our platform of Utsav Bazar, we are actually making brands stand on our goodwill and network. Therefore, we are very particular of the brands that would be showcased in the Utsav Bazar. During the event, the visitors would understand this. Last but not the least, Utsav Bazar is different in one more aspect. Generally the exhibitions focus on sales. But we are not focusing just on sales. We want to increase the brand's visibility and networking with peers in the industry.

NABHA STEALS A MILLION HEARTS By Swarnalata Pothapragada

hough she earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering, it was fine arts that always engaged her interest. Driven by this interest, Nabha Natesh forayed into modelling and soon, made her silver screen debut in Kannada, acting with superstar Shiva Rajkumar. The movie earned rave reviews. The actress speaks her heart out and tells us how she forayed into the industry and winning hearts.

Tell us a little about yourself I hail from in Sringeri. I was a good student & all my family members are professionals, with no connection to the film industry. Besides my studies, I was inclined towards extracurricular activities like dancing and painting. One thing I must admit is that I have been a movie buff all through. How did you get into acting? I got into modelling during college days. I participated in Femina Miss India Bangalore and was selected as one among the top 10. Simultaneously, I started my training in the theatre. The red | october 2018 | 44

experience in the theatre made me realize that acting is my call. That's when I started looking out for opportunities and attending auditions. How did you bag your first film? I had sent my profile to a few production houses and casting companies. When Vajrakaya was launched, they were looking for a new face. The director and crew were convinced that I fit the bill. Struggles? Touchwood! I did not need to struggle. much except that I attended a lot of auditions. Thanks to my theatre training,

I could get into the skin of the character with great ease. How was the experience? Oh, it was phenomenal. The first film that too with Shiv Rajkumar sir. Initially, it looked surreal but then I was all there. Tollywood call Director Naidu had seen my previous works and asked me to enact a scene from Ghajini. I did that scene and shared the video. Then I was called down to Hyderabad for an actual audition. After a couple of rounds of auditions I was in.

Your take on Nannu dochukundu vate... It was wonderful. Initially, when the movie came my way, I was excited and nervous too. I had to work with a new language, new crew & in new environs. Each and every member of the team ensured that I was comfortable and didn't let me feel like an outsider. I had seen Sudheer's earlier films I loved his work in Sammohanam. I sent a long message to him as well. Sudheer is immensely talented and as a producer, he ensured that everyone was comfortable. Because of him, it became very easy for me to slip into the character. Coming to the director Naidu, it is his trust in me that made me do this film, considering how complex the character is. The director supported me and made me give my best.

have a godfather, your hard work must be backed with patience and perseverance. I feel being in the right place at the right time makes a big difference. So, one should believe in themselves and give their best shot every time. Any fun memories from the sets? Oh a lot of them. All the comedy or humorous scenes that you see in the movie were super fun to shoot. Just like the audience, we too laughed our heart out on the sets, while doing them. Is there any actor you want to work with? As an actor and individual who loves movies, you think I can choose one actor? I wish to work with all of them because each one of them is unique in his/her own way in terms of their attitude, style, and trend. Honestly, if I get a superpower I would work with all of them, that too simultaneously. Future plans After Nannu dochu kundu vate a lot of good quality scripts are coming my way.

Did you dub for the film? How was the experience? No, I didn't. But I wish to do that for my future films. Initially, I did find it a bit difficult to pick up the language but Telugu is akin to Kannada. However, not dubbing for the film was not my decision. I believe that when actors dub for themselves, the performance goes to the next level. It adds that personal avour and an authenticity to the overall look and feel of the film. Survival without a filmy background or godfather Yes, it is. Nearly 50 lakh girls come to enter Indian cinema. But hardly 50 make it. Unlike in other professions that have a structure or a plan to achieve success, this industry has no rule book. There is a lot of competition and the only way to crack in is through talent and hard work. When you don't

However, currently, I can't share any details. But yes, Telugu movies are in the pipeline. When the time is right I shall tell you. Who is your pillar of support? My family. All of them- my parents and brother stood by me in my decisions and have been extremely encouraging. Their support helps me stay grounded and focused. When a girl enters showbiz it is very essential that her family is with her. Anything you want to tell your fans? Love them loads. I am very happy that they have accepted me. I receive many messages complimenting me. I feel humbled and happy. It pushes me to perform better. How would you define your fashion style? Comfort is my style statement. I don’t mind wearing anything as long as it is comfortable. Coming from a modeling background, I have seen it all. But off the screen, I am very simple, casual and dress up like any other modern-day girl.

OFF THE CUFF Favorite actor: Shahrukh Khan Outfits: Blue denim, white t-shirt, ganji Inspiration: Sridevi & Madhuri Dixit Best Advice: Start from the fundamentals and have the basic right Favorite accessory: Confidence Favorite colour: White If not an actor: Wannabe actor Define yourself as an actor Difficult but would say all rounder.
