APS Students Walk For a Cause Any event taken up by students always attracts attention and draws appreciation. Especially when youngsters advocate some serious issues that are causing concern worldwide, the event becomes all the more signicant. Marking the World Ozone Day, the students of Alwardas Public School took out a rally on 16th Sept. Dr. Vijaya Ravindra, Correspondent of the School agged off the rally from YMCA on the beach road. Divya Das, Executive Director, Rtn. Swapna Somani, President, Rotary Hill View and Srivani, Principal of the school led the rally upto Kali Temple. Throughout the march students displayed placards urging people to protect the Earth.

PARENTING SESSION AT TEENY BOPPERS Poonam Shah Srinath. Founder & Correspondent, Teeny Boppers came up with yet another unique event - parenting session. KLC’S CAKE ICING FUN Kakatiya Ladies Club is a part of ITC Kakatiya which has the top socialites of Hyderabad as its memebers. Through it the hotel organizes various theme based events every month. Visakhapatnam, the largest city in Andhra Pradesh, has acquired a new status and is being touted as the industrial hub of the state from every possible forum for the past few years. To be precise, the propaganda began even before the state bifurcation, as the political and industrial pundits decided that the City of Destiny would be a perfect answer to Telangana’s Hi-Tech City. It also made a number of entrepreneurs and industrialists to look at the region as a prospective (prosperous too) investing-ground. 10. Ayurvedic and Naturopathy Park: There is a need of land for Visakhapatnam Ayurvedic and Naturopathy centres, to be run on the lines of Kerala Ayurvedic Village and Bangalore Zindal Health City. This will certainly boost the medical tourism in a big way. All this can be accomplished without making any holes in the State government’s pocket. World-class Industrial Parks can be developed if the government allocates land on PublicPrivate Partnership mode; ropes in international consultants to give layout plans with approved permissions and hands them over to private developers. These parks can be set up in mere four months. The private developer can keep 30% of the developed land for himself and hand over the remaining 70% to the government. If we can take this lead and implement it, we can have a magnificent Industrial Parks by 2016.

But if you overcome that initial reserve, you not only stand to gain but also will sit down to a hearty repartee. A few minutes into conversation, you discover that behind the tough exterior is a highly articulate man who can effortlessly communicate; ready to laugh and most importantly, eager to make you laugh. He mirthfully declares, “I make even the CM laugh, you know. Of course, it is a different matter that he honours me only with a few brief smiles.”

Before we craft a roadmap for the city, we should see that we don’t replicate the mistakes committed by cities like Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai which landed themselves in a deep mess with chaotic trafc and high pollution levels and turned into breeding grounds of crime. The biggest boon we are bestowed here is the 17,000 acres of forestland within the city i.e Kambalakonda sanctuary which gives us extremely good lung space. It will bring huge employment opportunities. I am going to create a new avatar for Vizag. Components for TV and telephones are being imported from South Asian countries and the instruments are being assembled in Mumbai. We are looking at Anakapalle as an alternate so that the rural people will get the benet of employment. This will certainly change the very shape of the city.

Secondly, we are sadly lacking in the R&D institutes which set off development in the surrounding areas. Hyderabad has as many as 110 R&D institutes, out of which 97 are of Government of India. I leave no stone unturned to get a few institutes like the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology and the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development to the region. The third project, close to my heart, concerns health. All said and done we have the dubious distinction of being high on maternal mortality (MMR) due to low haemoglobin levels in girl children, especially in agency areas. We are intervening at the school level and checking the blood of the girls once in six months to give them a healthier future.
Grievances Whatever may be my workload, I make it a point to attend Grievance Cell. Here too, I evolved a different approach. Instead of addressing the grievance as a individual case, I prefer to go to the root cause. The problems occur because there is a failure in the implementing mechanism. So I strive to rectify that. You must have observed that there are no more maddening crowds with grievances like we had in the beginning. Corruption It should be a top-to-down approach.

The best way to get the remote tribal areas into the mainstream and develop them is by enhancing the connectivity. I am working towards it. Generally, tribals land up teaching in the same schools in which they have studied. Thus their exposure is limited. We have crafted some programmes to get them better exposure.

Making the best use of technology, time management and constant training are three factors that help achieve greater efciency. When brothers become partners in business and share the same commitment for work, the venture is bound to Evolve every passing day. It is not just a statement, but a reality of Tejas and Harish Hindocha. While Tejas, with his innovative designs and creativity, brought in a revolution in fashion scenario, his younger brother, Harish chipped in to make the new creations reach every fashionista in the city. Every piece at Evolve, The Fashion Studio, denes style quotient. Go a little beyond the merchandise on the display; there is a great story to get inspired, about how two teen Hindochas shaped the store which today stands as one of the most preferred shopping destination. This is how it all started….. TEJA’S TALE Entry My entire family is into textile business for years. Naturally, the same passion runs in my blood. My father Mr.Ramesh Hindocha has his store and it is called Geeta Textile. I knew I would be joining it one day. However, my entry to the business was a little premature. My father was not keeping well. The stress of work was taking a toll on him. Being the eldest born, I had to take up the responsibilities and I joined him when I was just 15. Though I was too young to be in the business I took it as a challenge and never looked back. Freshness Despite the best efforts, the business was not doing all that great and we were struggling to make both ends meet. As an aggressive youth, I was in a rush to speed up the things. My only aim was to live up to my family’s expectation. I always
had a zeal for designing and manufacturing. Such interests egged me to take the next big step. The year 2002, turned out the next milestone in my life as I launched Evolve, The Fashion Studio. To set it up, I had to discontinue my studies, but I have no regrets.
My future plan is to take my brand to international level. I wish to reach out to people globally and take my brand to every corner of the world. I am condent, it will be reality soon.
Impediments Every industry or eld has its problems. No matter whether you are a job holder or a businessman, your profession always throws some challenge or the other at one time or the other. It is a part and parcel of our life. Expecting the journey to be a smooth one is nothing but foolishness. I had my share of hassles to deal with, especially at the initial stages of my career. However, I took them as learning experiences. This approach made me even stronger and determined to work harder.

It was quite a small unit then. I started taking care of the store and its administration at the initial phase. After working for a while, I started my research to nd out what more we can add to it, so that we can increase our reach. I wanted to take it to a higher level by adding more design inputs. I felt a professional training, both theoretical and practical, would give me a better understanding. With this thought, I went for a fashion designing course and it did make a difference. Adding to Existing I believe in creativity, not just in our designs, but also in the business, boutique and service. I introduced the word 'new' here. In Sync with Trends Designers do not keep up with trends, they make trends. Since we deal with traditional and ethnic wear, we make them regal. Customers often look for traditional wedding wear but we try to break the monotony by adding a touch of style to it keeping clients preference in mind. There

We never compromise on our creation, as our products are a part of one of the most cherished moments of our customers’ lives. Bro-team We have our own set of responsibilities and duties and we don't interfere with each other. Designing is our top responsibility and then comes everything else. We do have our differences. But we have the freedom of speech and debate. We do have debates on the business but it is always healthy and positive. Both of us have our own clientele and we handle them individually. We have different styles of working, but we work parallel and the destination is of course the same. My brother is my strength. He is like the root of Evolve, and I am the stem, I can't survive without his support and inputs. I can trust him blindly.
On the Cards My current dream is the Lakme Fashion week. I am determined to make it to this coveted platform! As of now we are concentrating more on expanding opportunities than the number of outlets. We have set our standards for national level. Advice to Budding Entrepreneurs I feel for any person punctuality and systematic approach towards what you do is very necessary. Three principles I believe in are- discipline, passion and hard work. With discipline things appear clearer and you become aware of your strengths and weaknesses. Have passion for your work. Now, all you need is hard work. You might be hindered by many obstacles, overcome them and move forward. I believe there is a solution to every problem. Trust yourself and you will be successful! How did you get interested in the showbiz? What was the first assignment? Initially I wished to be a fashion designer and be a part of the industry. I participated, rather casually, in a fashion contest that was held in my school. I won it. It gave me confidence that I can try my hand at modeling too. While I was in Dehradun, I got a call for a show from Mumbai. Let me tell you it is a big deal as people go to Mumbai to hunt for work, but I got it sitting tight in Dehradun. My first assignment was a television commercial of Fair & Lovely cream. It was followed by TV shows like Get Gorgeous, Pyar Ka Bandhan etc. Bollywood would be a natural choice for aspirants like you, why did you debut in Tollywood? When I debuted at Tollywood, I also had an opportunity with Bollywood. I was a little confused. But the offer in Tollywood had better scope to show my acting skills and talent. I am proud that I chose Andala Rakshasi over a Bollywood film. The first movie Andala Rakshasi earned you fame and accolades including Best Debutante Award, how was the feeling? Awards are always overwhelming. That apart, it also earned me rave reviews and critical acclaim. My roles in these movies are quite distinct and different. In Sogade Chinnni…., I am given a very traditional look and I feel Indian woman looks most stunning in traditional wear especially in sari. You will see me in traditional and glamorous avatar. She is smart and not gullible.
Naveen Chandra, Rahul Ravindran, Manchu Vishnu and Nani - with whom did you share the best rapport on the sets? I shared good rapport with all of them. But on the sets of Bhale Bhale…. we had a lot of fun. Moreover, I always like Nani as an actor. It was a different experience working with him. Which is the toughest part in acting? Nothing serious so far! I love acting, dancing and playing every kind of emotion. It was not acting, but a different incident. During the shoot of Andala Rakshasi we had a scene near a lake in Munnar and it was full of leeches and earthworms. I have terrible phobia about these creatures. What kind of movies are your picks? In these three years, I got many offers, but hadn’t signed many. Yet I gave three hits. I don’t like to play the same kind of roles again and again. I can perform best, if I am happy with my character.
Which movie has been the closest to your heart, and why? It is my first movie, we shot it for almost a year and I was totally into the character, I turned into Midhuna. Even Bhale Bhale…. is special for me. I loved myself the most while doing this movie.
We have heard that you are a good Kathak dancer, when can the audience see your grooving skills? They have already seen it in my latest flick in which I did mass, western and classical Kuchipudi, almost all genres. Given a chance, I love to do a dance-based movie. How do you define yourself as an actor? I am still learning and it is an evolving process.

Most enjoyable memories on sets There are plenty. But the one I cherish the most is during the shooting of Andala Rakshasi in Munnar. Every day we had to travel a few hours up and down from our hotel and on the way we used to stop by to have tea and snacks. Those roadside breaks were like picnic for me. I still feel really nice recalling those memories.

Vizag Bound I am originally from North India. My rst job landed me here in Vizag in 2005. I joined HSBC as caller in the collection department. My performance brought me good promotions and after ve-year tenure, I left as Assistant Manager Collection. Besides climbing different ladders with various roles, I also obtained yellow belt Six Sigma certication. Stint with Hospitality I got married and wanted a change in my prole. Vizag is often blamed as the land with no opportunities, but I give it a clean chit. Yes, there was a time post HSBC, I was scared about next job options. But, there was something better waiting for me and it happened in the form Four Points by Sheraton. When I joined, it was in a setting up stage, there was not even a board of the property. I took up the prole of Manager catering sales and business development. I never thought that I could be a sales person. I was glad that I could generate so much of business for the hotel. It was quite a challenging task, as I had to create awareness among the locals that something of this sort exists, as well as had to get deals for the property. I literally became the face of the sales. Next Plunge My next job was with Kenexa (changed to IBM). Here I joined as a project head of RPO (Recruiting Process Outsourcing). I was in charge of recruiting for mega companies all over the world like Ford, Corning, Boston Scientic and the likes. By now I have an experience of over a decade in corporate and multinational companies. My CV had brands like HSBC, IBM, Sheraton and I got hands on experience in collection, people management, recruitment, marketing, sales, PR, managing projects, dealing with clients etc. Every stage and role had added to my skills. I felt I was ready to make the next move. I always had the calling for export and import but wasn’t

Whatever produce you want to export, you need to show the chemistry of the food. Trust me, it is very difcult for me to nd a product in India that matches their parameters. I literally have to travel the width and length of India to nd products of their standard.
Authenticity Check Organic food is something which needs to be protected at every level. Even the soil is certied, the farmer has to produce a certicate which needs an annual renewal. Everything goes through a lab test. It is certied by the producer, then by the processor and then examined by third party inspection. If something goes wrong, the license is cancelled and the person involved is blacklisted. Even the packaging has its rules and depending on the food items, it should have less of petroleum as it can also spoil the quality.
There are stringent and separate rules for export license too. It is only natural that there is justiable price involved, if you have to protect the food at every stage. But it doesn’t amount to a great variation in the price tag of non-organic and organic food. It is just, that people have to make a wise choice and cut down on medical bills, which run into thousands and lakhs of rupees these days. I would just leave it here saying “if you think organic food is expensive – have you priced cancer lately?” At Offing Till now my business is into export. Now we are getting into domestic market. We are also adding a range of new products under lifestyle – body care, seasoning, condiments, packed food, baby food. An app has been launched and it gives all the information besides creating awareness. This domestic launch would help us building our brand and adds to its credibility. Besides the app, there is a website i.e. www.ancientindiaorganics.in which has all the details and facilitates same day delivery in the city. Tea and coffee will be under our own brand. We are authorized distributors of Eco Life (the organic segment of Dawat rice) and also of Pure and Sure (A Bangalore-based organic products company that has a strong foothold in Karnataka and a good presence nationally.) Additionally, we have tied up with 24 Mantra (grocery), Nourish Organics, Conscious Food (organic snacks), Pristine (baby food), and Organic Harvest (bodycare products). The idea is to create a onestop-shop. The quality of these products is exceptional. Their promotion is needed until we introduce to new users, once they try it, they get glued to them. I am aiming to convert as many families as possible into organic food consumers. Balancing Act Wife, mother and entrepreneur – it is not a very easy thing to juggle all these roles. So I have to start the day early. I am blessed to have Lalit, as my husband. He has seen the weakest and the strongest side of my personality. I can’t imagine this path without him. I don’t compromise on my time with my son Ayaan except when I am travelling. I try to spend good quality time with him every day. I am truly grateful to my entire family, friends, mentors and staff who extend uninching support to me. Message to Women Women have tremendous potentials and
talents. No one can stop them if they are determined. Even my life wasn’t easy and I am yet to reach where I want to see myself. Drawn by the creamy cheese, tangy tomato or the fresh aroma of oregano you are bound to step in at The Pasta Bar Veneto. Treat your senses by indulging in a rich dining experience. Take home the memories. And if you still crave for them at odd hours but can’t visit the place then try your favourite dishes at home, as Chef Hemanth Singh is sharing their secret recipes here.
Lasagna di Pollo Ingredients Tomato sauce

Chicken Bolognese (each layer 75 gms)

Method: In a pasta pan heat the tomato sauce, add the chicken Bolognese and allow it to cook for a minute. Pour in the cream and toss it well so that it coats the chicken thoroughly. In a baking bowl apply a layer of 10 ml of tomato sauce and place a lasagna sheet. Now spread the chicken mixture (half of it). Sprinkle cheese on top (20 gm). Repeat the same for one more layer and top it with the third lasagna sheet. Spread soup base sauce and sprinkle cheese on top. Load it in the conveyor for two to three minutes at 450º to 580ºF. Garnish it with basil pesto seasoning. Serve it hot with garlic bread.

Method: Marinate the fish fillet with all the ingredients of the marination for 20 minutes. Grill the fish fillet, till it turns golden brown on both the sides. Ensure it doesn’t get burnt. Season the blanched vegetables with salt and pepper. Now for plating, place the mashed potato in the canter of the plate and arrange the vegetables around it. Place the grilled fish on the bed of the potato. Garnish with basil pesto seasoning. Serve it with garlic bread and lemon butter.

Method: In a pasta pan pour the tomato sauce. Add the chicken Bolognese and cook for 20 seconds. Blanch the pasta for 30 seconds, take it out and drain the water. Add pasta to the pan and toss it well. Now blend in cream and coat the sauce well. Toss it again. Transfer in a serving plate and sprinkle grated parmesan cheese. Garnish with basil and serve.

Now roll the chicken breast on the crumbs first and then dab it on the sesame seeds and deep fry in oil till it turns light golden in colour for around 3 minutes. Serve with spicy mayo sauce. Method: Cook the spaghetti and keep it aside. Don’t over boil it. In a sauce pan, heat a few drops of olive oil and sautÊ the vegetables. Now pour the tomato sauce. Add 20 ml water and season it with salt and pepper. Bring it to a boil. Remove from heat. Place the cooked spaghetti on a soup bowl and pour the soup into it. Sprinkle parmesan cheese on top. Serve it hot along with a piece of garlic bread.

His son Amit Agarwal inherited not only his business but also his soul and spirit. Yes, a perfect example of ‘like father, like son’. He picked up trade threads from his father who had built the business starting from the scratch in 1957. Besides managing the facility handed down to him, Amit made a sizable contribution to it by expanding its scope.A thorough professional and an expert in his eld, Amit is a popular socialite and known for his gracious hospitality and singing talent. Complementing his persona is his wife charming Vibha. Her contribution is crucial both at home, which she wonderfully manages and at work, where she keeps accounts and runs the administration. How did it all start? My father landed in Vizag in 1955, following his elder brother who was working in Hindustan Shipyard Ltd. My father started his business with home appliances and followed it up with instruments for Andhra University. Later, he added engineering products such as cutting tools etc., to his product line with supplies to BHPV (now BHEL). He further added chemicals and welding products. In 1973, he started another company, Amit Engineers dedicated to welding and allied products.

Your addition to the business? I introduced plastic injection moulding as an ancillary unit to Synergies Castings in 2000. We diversied, manufacturing plastic spools for Lincoln Electric, Chennai, plastic components for packing automotive windscreens manufactured by Pilkington Automotive, Visakhapatnam. We also manufacture plastic cabinets for instrument monitors used in hospitals (ICU) for a company which has its parent branch in the US and PVC gaskets for an optical lens manufacturer. What are the special benefits you enjoy, being part of a family business?
The best boon is the opportunity to work with my father, who is the backbone of our business. I have gained tremendously, learning from him. He made a humble beginning and had developed innovative strategies, as how to approach the customer, how to close a deal, how to keep relationship with customers and industry which helped in shaping the business into the way it is today. He has taught that one should be 100% committed to his work only then people would consider you as a reliable business associate. He has trained us to be very organized, disciplined and thoroughly systematic. Perhaps, in business I can match his calibre, but not otherwise. I owe
a lot to my mother Dr.Lavanya Lata, a well known obstetrician of older times, who created a home away from home for the family. Though she retired from active practice, she is always ready to help anyone who approaches her for medical advice. What are your professional strengths? It is my technical knowledge especially in welding metallurgy, often my customers and business associates compliment me for my strong communication skills. I keep things simple and clear and it makes the dealing easy and comfortable. Didn’t you think of transcending Visakhapatnam? Until few years back, we didn’t look beyond Visakhapatnam and adjoining districts. But now we have widened our boundaries within AP and to Odisha. What are new products, equipment and technologies you are working on? We are diversifying from maintenance equipment and consumables to capital equipment and projects. We are working with a Ukraine-based company to introduce a system called Magnetic Impulse for the steel industry. We also have plans to get into automation, especially in the welding eld. The consumable market is getting competitive, hence to be in the race with the kind of experience and knowledge we have, we believe, we must step up the scale and bring in high-end equipment. Necessary actions are in process. Recently we have tied up with a French company for pipe welding for special applications. For many years we were working only with Indian products and companies. With the opening of global markets, we are now dealing with some foreign products of very advance quality. Now we have both Indian and high-end foreign products to cater to a wider

We have plans to get into welding services, especially for oil and gas and power industry. What are the roots of your family business? My family is into apparel trade since 1956, which was started by my grandfather. After completion of my graduation, I joined the family business in 2005 and continued working for three years. Meanwhile, I went through a three-month certicate course from NIFT. But by and large it has been a hands on training. I wanted to start a venture of my own in the same eld, but in a different or to be specic in a rened way. In 2008, two of my cousins, Murali and Gopi Manepally and a friend Goutham and I came together to launch a brand. All of us have our own family businesses, but this was our own initiative. We launched Sri Krishna Silks. It has a modish appeal and included high-end saris, especially in Kanjivaram and Benarasi. We also have readymade men and women’s ethnic wear, all under one roof. What are the fresh concepts you have added? Around 2006-07, I started an e-commerce division and it was the rst-of-its-kind in the city. It was called e-sari store. The website was not just for selling saris, but to offer a complete package of matching blouses, petticoats, tting of fall etc. Our reach was not just within the country, as we catered to many overseas clients to countries like Dubai, US, South Africa, Australia and all in bulk. At present I am reviving this e-store again even in a better way.
Shoot by Dinakar Pamu How the products at your store are different from others? We choose our materials, design them and put it for sale. Even there are a few products for which we have our weaving looms in Dharmavaram and Aarni and weaving is done in-house. Does quality or quantity play key role in successful clothing business? I feel quantity or trading in bulk might fetch you big returns, but it is quality which can give you a lasting presence in the market. My uncle, Mr.Manepally Ramarao, the founder of Manepally group always inspires us and he insists we maintain quality. Let me tell you, one of the major reason behind opening Sri Krishna Silks was the demand of pure and authentic silk saris by a lot of our jewellery clients who would crib of not
having pure quality silk saris in the city. How do you ensure quality? Are there any parameters? Yes there is a parameter to judge the purity and many traders aren’t still aware of it. We are one of the rst few in the city to offer Silk Mart quality saris. It is like standardization of BIS Hallmark in jewellery. We have a silk mart tag with almost all the Kanjivaram, especially in which pure zaris are being used, vouching for the quality. With a new mall or store opening every alternate day, has it become a competitive market for you? Not exactly! Basically I feel there is no outsider with whom I am competing; I would be rather competing with myself to get things better and better. I set targets
for myself and raise the bar up for the next time. This competitiveness helps me to perform better. What are the publicity modes you use to promote your brand? I am looking at direct reach to the customer. Instead of putting up big hoardings, I prefer to take our brand directly to our customers’ hands through print ads in magazine, pamphlets, gift voucher or SMS marketing. Who are you potent client groups? We have two different stores, targeting two different segments of customers. Sri Krishna Silks caters to middle class, upper middle class and hi-end customers. Brindavan Silks which was started by the same group in 2010, it is lower grous, exclusively to cater to low income group. Sri Krishna Silks is a agship store of the group.

The handloom industry is on the edge Do you take any initiative to revive it? We are always working on the subject and willing to work at greater intensity in future. We are closely working with weavers and promote handloom products. Customers get exclusivity in handloom and the feel of the sari would be matchless. Silk industry is very huge. But many saris are dying somehow. The weavers are moving away to other industries. We try to hold back the weavers by paying them fair labour price. We also educate them to maintain all the elements like quality of yarn, designing, weaving, nesse etc., so that their product will have higher saleability, we guide them on where to procure pure zari or yarn and similar things.
What are your profit levels? We started off with basic margin, our intention is to reach more customers. We aim at providing good quality saris at

What is your best selling point? Our most selling product is our exclusive range of Kanjivaram. We usually coordinate with the best of designers of Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad, take inputs from customers and design them. We have a custom-made option for a certain saris. One of our unique features is we give the customer to get their name designed on a kanjivaram sari. Similarly, if you want your picture to be used, it can also be crafted on the sari with digital print. Such specialities are our advantages. Not only this, if you have your great grandmother’s sari as a heirloom and want to replicate the design, you can certainly come to us, we assure the best output.
Future plans Last year, I opened the second outlet and I am concentrating on it to develop further. There are a couple of other areas in Hyderabad, where I would like to open more branches of the brand. It will be followed by taking the brand to other cities. Another project on which I am working is to do with pure silk production. Usually if silk has to be obtained, one has to boil the cocoons and the worms are killed. What is the greatest threat of the trade? It is denitely the dead stock which is generated by following the trend. We can’t help it. Going with lower margin, we can move the piles fast. We have been getting great response even during the sales; we have never been at losing end. Though we don’t earn too large a prot, but we are happy this way.

n today’s world where politicians hem and haw or search for words that please everyone, BJP State Finance Committee Convener Mr.Cheruvu Ramakotaiah stands apart. Staunch follower of RSS ideology, he is straightforward both in his word and deed. If he stuns you with his high energy levels, he spellbinds you with his pauseless speech, la Mr.Venkaiah Naidu. Those ve letters -VIZAG- seem to be holding all the magic for him. His enthusiasm grows by minute as he talks of some well-meditated projects he has envisaged for Vizag. Meeting him is certainly an enriching experience because he is an expert in three divergent eldsPolitics, Construction and Social Welfare and talks of them with ourish.
Please begin from the beginning I was born in a very afuent and traditional family that practised agriculture in Peravali village, in Guntur district. Our village produced famous Lakkapalli Bullayya, Former ViceChancellor, Andhra University and IAS ofcer Mr.M.V.S. Prasad. My father the late Mr.Venkata Purnanada Sarma, popularly known as Pappayya garu was an adroit agricultural expert and a body builder. His ideals transcended that tiny village of 5,000 population and his love for people and cattle was something out of the world. When Hyderabad faced a severe drought, he collected grass from the surrounding villages and sent it for starving cattle. He used to take care of the needs of villagers, educate and employ the youth, would not let any youth to be idle. There was hardly any family in the village that did not enjoy his largess. Complementing him in every respect was my mother the late Mrs.Varalakshmi. I have two sisters. Education I studied up to 9th standard in the local Cheruvu Buchchi Ramayya Zilla Parishad School, which was founded by one of my ancestors and went to Tenali for further studies. Having unked in the Intermediate, I found myself at a loose end. I moved to Vizag to try my hand in the book business. At my father’s behest, I got back to studies and joined Bullayya College to study B.Com. After an abortive attempt to study Law, I started Sagar restaurant in VUDA Park. I had to close it in 1989 as I incurred a colossal Rs.10 lakhloss. This was due to the faulty government policies. With the city facing severe power crunch they used to cut off supply by nightfall, which hit my business. Ironically, that was the time the park was developing into a landmark entertainment park. In to Construction Eventually, construction eld caught my eye and I started working for steel plant oating Bharadwaj Associates. There is no looking back after that. Though it all started with a mere Rs.18,000 worth work, by the end of the year I was handling Rs.10lakh worth projects. Notable among the jobs I did for the Steel Plant was xing a Rs.5 cr- worth weighbridge. This
earned me very good name, as it was completed in record time. Mr.V.P. Singh was coming to commission the Steel Plant and I was given the job of writing names (3000 sq.mts) on the buildings which earned me a prot of Rs.75,000 with which I bought my rst Jeep. One project followed the other, not only in the state but also outside. We constructed 7 Kendriya Vidyalaya schools in places like Guntur, Yanam and Srikakulam, landmark GSI building and Doppler Weather radar building on Kailash giri in the city. We bagged the All- India Award for the Administrative Building of Nagarjuna University. After my father’s departure, I changed the name of the company to VR Builders clubbing my name with his. Quite a few projects are in the pipeline which include a hostel for foreign students in Guntur. You are known as the saviour of builders, how come? People think the life of a contractor is a bed of roses. But only he knows that there are innumerable and invisible thorns strewn amidst those owers. He either gets huge prots or incurs immense losses. He is burdened by unnecessary taxes and has to knock at least 30 doors to get the mandatory permissions. This sector is plagued by problems related to sand, cement, labour and last but not the least, nances. We have seen mighty contractors falling like nine pins. Our objective is to educate the contractors who are oblivious to their rights. How and why did you join BJP? Greatly inspired by the veteran leader Vajpayee, I joined BJP in 1995 (actively) and 1998 (very actively), even though I enjoy good ties with different political parties. BJP is
full of honest politicians like Bandaru Dattatreya garu who is my Agnatha guru. I am the rst one to propose Dr.Hari Babu’s name as the state president. When Amit Shah came to the city prior to the elections, the rst call he gave was to me. I am one of the 66-core committee members of the party in Andhra Pradesh and Convener of the State Finance Committee. Tell us about your social welfare activities? I oated an NGO- ViviSri that serves Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakaulam, which can be labeled as backward districts. Yes, we do observe certain development in central Visakha but its peripheral areas show no progress. One should not take the escalating land prices as sign of prosperity of the region. If we connect these three districts with railways efciently, we are sure to see a market boom. The uninterrupted and speedy transportation of merchandise like vegetables will change the very prole of this region. This will also curtail the road trafc, and in turn, pollution.
Please give us a glimpse of your personal ideology Despite the crores of rupees I earned I remain simple and a middle class man at heart because amassing wealth and living life king size are not for me. I don’t earn anything more than I require. I don’t drink or smoke, though I don’t like to stamp them as bad habits. I am very religious. Vajpayee is an austere man. His worldly possessions are nothing but a small house, which he purchased with his pension benets. That is what I emulate. I nurse no ambitions to occupy high chairs but if at all my party wants my services in a particular capacity, I shall not say no. Since I am a genuine tax payer, I can sleep with no burden on my mind. A little about your family I married Rama in 1991. She is a wonderful wife and a fantastic cook. My daughter Tripura is an M.Tech topper and is recently married. My elder son Bharadwaj is studying Civil Engineering in AU and the second son Bhargav Sarma is in Higher Secondary. I am thankful to Dr.Sharda Reddy of Visakha Valley School for giving good education to my children.
Please throw light on your role as VATA Chairman I became the chairman of the 15-year-old Visakhapatnam Air Travellers Association. I have given a lot of time, effort and money to improve the air connectivity the city. Here I must acknowledge the cooperation of good friends like Naresh of Symbiosys. A special mention has to be made of Mrs.Purandeswari. Though she belonged to the rival party she appreciated our initiative and saw to it that the city is airlinked with Singapore. Why this special soft corner for Vizag? I came here as a student and the city helped me grew into an entrepreneur and a leader to be reckoned with. So I must do something for it. Our CM keeps talking of developing the city in the lines of Singapore. But despite its potential and resources, the city’s progress is tardy. How do you manage such varied fields? It is very simple - I just delegate work to my trusted lieutenants. In addition to all this, I beautifully manage my ancestral farm lands that give me rich dividends. His dreams for Vizag I advocate clean, green, beautiful and healthy Vizag. To achieve that I have quite a few suggestions. •

The government should develop sea-breeze resistant paint that can be given on subsidized rates and lend the workforce to paint all the buildings in a uniform pattern.

Through his pure creativity and perseverance, he stylized the celebs. The young talent grabbed projects like Jagadam, Ragada, Robot, Damarukam, Aarya 2, Ishq and many more. Even, God couldn’t hold Himself back and blessed him with Lady Luck Chandrika who appeared as a pal and later went on to become partner in his career and life. Today, Raamz (especially its wedding collection) has become a label to reckon with. Ram Jeebu, the man and Chandrika Jeebu, the woman behind him, are here sharing how they are shaping their brand.

When did you get into fashion industry? Did you obtain professional training? Ram: I hail from a small town called Razole in East Godavari. There was no fashion connection in our family. Yet I nursed a great fascination for clothes right from the beginning. My biggest blessing has been my parents, who encouraged me to take it up as a career. They are simple people, who have very modest living, not too highly educated and had almost no idea what fashion was all about. But they believed in my dreams. I neither had any formal training nor assisted anyone. In 2007, I started my journey in Hyderabad with a Juki sewing machine costing Rs.15,000 gifted by my father as my only investment. I employed one tailor and started designing clothes as freelancer. I used to visit malls, mega showrooms to learn about trends, designs and colours through window shopping. During one such visit I met director Sukumar in Hyderabad Central and he asked me to come to his ofce. He liked my design and I was on-board of Jagadam. It opened the door of Tollywood and Kollywood for me. Chandrika: From the childhood fashion held a sway over me. I remember my mom’s saris often used to end up as my dresses, designed into different patterns by me. I joined NIFT, Chennai, and completed a four-year course with specialisation in Knitwear. It was followed by six-month work at RK fabrics at Bangalore. Meanwhile, I met Ram and he advised me to join a rm to gain knowledge in woven fabrics and I landed myself a job in Singhania’s in Hyderabad and worked there for six months. What is the source of inspiration for your creations? Ram: In daily life we tend to see many things. From the time the day starts, even the coffee mug or the texture on the coffee throws up a design and it can be an idea for my collection. My hand goes to Page-3 in the newspaper; I follow the Hollywood celebrities’ way of dressing. I don’t copy but get inuenced by a few aspects. Chandrika: I draw inspiration from anything I see. Even our trips to different places help me do so. Recently we went to Maldives, I really liked the place and we are trying to create a collection around it.
second. Ram has been working since 2007 and the label was already created. As it was already an established name, we let it continue. We were serious about our career. Besides that we also decided to be partners for life too. So it is ours. In fact, Raamz (designer label) is by Ram and Chandrika Jeebu. Every piece you see here, is created by both of us. Even the clothes we are wearing for the shoot are designed by us.
How do you work as a team? Ram: Chandrika’s arrival in my life gave it a denite direction. We realized there are a lot of similarities in our tastes. We have the same kind of passion and dedication. We started off as friends, graduated to be partners. Eventually, we thought of opening a boutique together. With limited resources we launched a boutique Raamz Design Studio and it is now one year and nine months old. Our efforts yielded 2000 clients, including many celebrities. This year we took the next step and now she is my better half. Chandrika: We have no ego clashes. Many ask why it is called only Raamz and why my name is not included. I never felt that way, not even for a fraction of a
What is your individual forte? Ram: I am very positive about life. I never look back. Besides that, I am a good observer, if I observe something, I pick up. Even I design interiors, but due to lack of time, it is on the hold for the time being. I never felt I missed something by not having a formal training in the subject. When I came to Hyderabad, my English was not good, even today I couldn’t perfect it. But I can communicate and pass the message with a smile and it works. I never take any negative response to my heart. I just move on. Chandrika: Ram is more into practical knowledge. I am strong in coordinating the workforce. Deciding on embellishments and embroidery is my forte; he is good at creating silhouettes. He is there in the industry for almost eight years and he knows how to handle different kinds of customers. I am just two and a half years old in the industry, so I am learning how to deal with clients. What has been the greatest project so far? Ram: As I mentioned my career began with working for lm industry. After Jagadam, I was referred by cinematographer Rathnavelu to director Shankar for Robot movie. Shankar asked me to design an outt which would look like robot’s costume and have exibility too. I designed one with rexine and rubber. He was thoroughly impressed with my creativity and I was engaged for the movie. I worked almost for two years in this movie and it was a great learning to work with industry’s biggies so closely. It was the major break. Then was the cover shoot for Ma Stars magazine with Chiranjeevi, Rana, Ram Charan. Nag Chaitanya, Nagarjuna. Even the saris I designed for Anushka for Nesthama Nesthama song are still talk of the town.
right way, with right texture, right fabric, detailing of buttons, embellishments or the cuts and designs, the results are always awesome. In our pieces we use a lot of braiding design especially in zardozi, it creates a lovely pattern. We try to give life to clothes as we place embroidery or match the patterns. Chandrika: Even though my specialisation was knitwear, we don’t deal with it in our collection, as it doesn’t have a market here. We have traditional occasion wears especially the wedding collection. We try to give complementing outts to bride and groom. More than pret line, we are into couture for both men and women. Men would get formal outts, sherwanis, shirts, trousers, Nehru jackets, kurtas, Jodhpuris, Indowesterns etc. There are exquisite saris, blouses, lehengas, Anarkalis, cocktail dresses, one-piece dresses for women, etc. There is a bit of casual outts too which are mostly party wears. What are your future plans? Ram: We are putting a lot of efforts to showcase in Lakme Fashion Week Spring-summer resort wear, slated for around Feb- March 2016. It is a platform, which creates a buzz in the fashion world all over the country. We already started working on our collection. Very soon we are coming up with pieces with natural fabric like handloom ones. I want our label to get international recognition. However, I haven’t set any timeline for it. Besides fashion, I have celluloid dreams. I have completed one movie as hero and it might release this year. However, I won’t take a break from fashion. We always believe in special days in every person’s life and make them unforgettable with stunning clothing
Chandrika: We have plans to expand. At present half of the Hyderabad knows Raamz. Within a short span of time it has got widespread popularity. Even we have clients coming all the way from Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur especially for our wedding collection and this publicity is only through word of mouth. We are members of BNI, he is from Icon chapter and I am from Fusion chapter and it is also helping in spread the buzz. We wish to see Raamz as city’s top label as early as possible. We want to create a benchmark in fashion.
Another special project was Ishq, where I gave the complete makeover to Nitin. Till date people praise me for his stylish yet boy next door look. Chandrika: Besides celebs from lm industry, we design for MP K. Kavitha and Lokesh (CM Chandra Babu Naidu’s son). Jagapati Babu and Sai Dharam Tej are also our clients. First time we designed for Kavitha, it was total 15 outts for a trip to London. On her return, she called us and said people used to eagerly wait for her to see what she was wearing that day. Such compliments mean a lot to us. What one would get in label Raamz? Ram: We always believe in special days in every person’s life and make them unforgettable with stunning clothing. When you can make them look their best and they get compliments, then it becomes a memory to cherish forever. Thus, we majorly design for occasions and remain close to people’s heart. We work with all colours. I feel, any colour if you play in
