r.Usha Balakrishna, the renowned industrialist and film distributor who owned a humongous 70 acre-fish tank in Kolleru, asked his office to hold back payment of Rs.2 lakh to the 16-year-old Loknath in a fish supply deal. The youth, anticipating some fussy haggling, went to Mr.Balakrishna only to be told, “Had I released your payment, you would not have come to me. I wanted to see you as you are the youngest in the field and are doing a stupendous job. I see a great potential in you and greater future for you.” Yes, the veteran’s prediction did come true. Mr.B.Loknath, Managing Director, Somaa Restobar, is barely pushing 40s, but he has made significant forays into three unrelated fields – pisciculture, real estate and now the hotel industry. His recentlyopened Somaa has already been the talk of the town with its unique ambience, impeccable amenities and never-before-in the region services. He narrates his eventful journey in an exclusive and interesting tete-a-tete .

Rural Roots We hail from Machilipatnam and our family which was dealing with agriculture moved to GollaGudem in Kaikaluru when I was a child. It was a cosy household with my father, the late Mr.Ramachandra Rao, my mother Mrs.Subhadra and we, three children. The heart attack my father suffered while I was studying Intermediate changed the course of my life. I had to take charge of the family as my father was rather demoralised by his illness. I started looking for a good source of income as I had to see my younger siblings settle, besides looking after my parents. I am the first one in our family to step out to explore a new path and become an entrepreneur. I got into fish business and took up dealership for Aqua Feed at the age of 16. Dealing with prawns and fish, I ran it with considerable success. Vizag calling The Krishna District administration launched Operation Kolleru to restore the pristine glory of Kolleru Wildlife Sanctuary, Asia's largest wetland and stopped fish cultivation. This made me look around for an alternative business. It also put me on the horns of dilemma -whether to go to Hyderabad or Vizag. Taking a cue from destiny, I came to the coastal city in 2007.

dinning into my head that I was cut out for real estate business and should take it up in all earnestness. Yet another friend from Hyderabad who had a piece of land in Vizag asked me to manage it. I was totally new to this field and I was very wary of the unfamiliar ground. The first thing that sent me into a tizzy was the cost of the land which was prohibitively high. While in our towns an acre was costing only Rs.3 to 4 lakh, they were quoting nothing less than a crore for an acre of land here. I still took the plunge and started Devi Homes. The first deal Putting my best foot forward, I acquired a 7,000 sq.yard-plot in Maddilapalem and gave it to Mr.G.S.Raju of G.Con for development. Despite many hardships and hurdles, I grew from strength to strength both in status and business. I built my it brick by brick and with God’s grace, it is ourishing. Success story A piece of land was stuck in a hassle for four decades with 3 parties squabbling over it. It was being used as a junkyard

,,

where people used to dump waste. I could bring all the warring factions to the table and settled it amicably. It took me 20 days to clean-up the place. The transaction attracted even the media’s attention. This deal shot me up into unexpected heights and the who is who of the city started acknowledging me. The local people honoured me at the Shiva temple, making me perform abhishekam to God with 101 pots of water brought in by women drapped in their traditional splendour. Now many people come to me asking me to salvage a piece of land here or sort out a problem there. VENTURE-3 Hotel industry Somaa too is born out of a stray thought. I mentioned it casually to my friends and one of them suggested that I should set it up in his sprawling building on the VIP Road. I wondered if there was wisdom in operating a restaurant in such a proximity to the other established ones. Won’t it be too close for comfort? Taking it up as an additional challenge, I worked on a unique concept that would not invite any rivalry.

WHATEVER MAY BE THE BUSINESS YOU ARE RUNNING, NEVER LET DOWN YOUR CUSTOMERS BECAUSE THEY GIVE YOU NOT ONLY THEIR MONEY BUT ALSO THEIR TRUST.

,,

VENTURE-1

VENTURE -2 Real challenge I took up dealership and ran a shop- Rajyalakshmi Surgical Equipment, named after my wife. Later, I deviated into waterproofing services by launching Lailaa Build Proof. The prestigious projects I took up included Chitralaya theatre, KenX, IBM and Chaitanya College. In the meantime, a friend, philosopher and guide went on red | september 2018 | 45

I needed to offer something that the city had never seen before- right from its external ambience to what is served on the platter. The seethrough live kitchen offers the guest an ample view of what is cooking. The vast spread of menu, live band and the sophisticated bar that serves top-notch drinks are the added attractions. In short, I saw to it that it turns out to be a family restaurant which offers something for everyone. I acquire the best quality water and ingredients, no compromising there. Their take away should be fond memories of the time they spent here and the facilities offered. Response So far so good. Though we were into the industry recently, we are witnessing impressive number of footfalls. In fact, many hoteliers of repute who came here had only words of praise for what they have seen and experienced. Of course, I must admit that people initially looked askance at me. But now all of them say, “We thought that you were too loaded with wealth to swindle it on a restaurant that caters to families with works like live kitchen, music and liquor. But we are spellbound by what you are offering. You have

taken the standards of the city’s food industry to a higher level and gifted the Smart City with a chic asset.” Staff- friendly initiatives I am able to provide livelihood to nearly 100 people including some experts in culinary field. I make a deal with my employees. If they save Rs100 per month from every Rs.10,000 they earn, they can take it whenever they need it and I shall chip in with a matching grant. They appear to be happy with this arrangement. As the head of the ‘family’, I stand by them through thick and thin.

Unfulfilled dream None. I could achieve all that I wanted till now. But there is a lot more to do.

DESPITE MANY HARDSHIPS AND HURDLES, I GREW FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH BOTH IN STATUS AND BUSINESS.

F A M I LY C O R N E R WITH HIM AROUND, LIFE HAS TO BE SMOOTH: RAJYALAKSHMI It was an arranged marriage ordained right from the childhood as we are cousins. We tied knot in 1997. Since it was only an inter-family shift, the transition was smooth and there were no major changes. We did see a lot of ups and a few downs too. But that did not come in the way of our relationship. The best trait in him that enchants me even now is his happy disposition. His anger is very short-lived. I never interfere in his decisions because I know he chooses only what is right for us. He can take any situation under his control and give it his best shot. I restrict my role to my home and am busy with my children and mother-in-law. My son Teju is studying B.Tech and daughter Mouni B.B.A in GITAM. My husband takes out as much time for us as he can from his packed days. He bestows equal attention on his people and my family, leaving no scope for anyone to complain. Our holidays are with our relatives. We never miss Sankranti celebrations in our village.

MY FATHER IS A SUPER HERO - TEJESHNATH He never ever as much raised his hand or voice to punish me, whatever might have been my fault. He would quietly make me understand what I had done was wrong. I am in awe of him even though he is very soft. Though he is very caring, his business obligations keep him on his toes and don’t allow him enough time to spend with us. So we interact more with mom.

MY FATHER IS THE BEST: MOUNIKA VASAVI I prefer to talk of my father’s brainchild Somaa which means Elixir. It is not just a restaurant, but it is an enriching experience which imparted many valuable lessons to all of us, right from the word go. We had deliberated over the project for days, starting from selecting the name to all the amenities it was to offer. All the time, my father would only say - “Whatever we do, we have to leave a mark on history.” He is such a perfectionist that if things are not up to the mark, he would ask them to dismantle the entre thing and redo it and the process would continue till he is satisfied. He wouldn’t leave any stone unturned to accomplish that top-notch outcome. I have seen him working innumerable hours for the past one year till he saw Somaa open. He is an out and out people’s man. His energy and enthusiasm are very infectious. He encourages me in all my escapades.

Genesis My father Mr.Trinadha Rao, an ex-service man, is my hero. He had given me total freedom to pursue any course I wanted, whether it is in academic field or in extracurricular activities. My mother Mrs.Umadevi is a perfectionist and my role model. My campus crush blossomed into a perfect marriage with Mr.Murali Krishna Pattabhi, who is the architect of my success. He is the cofounder of our company. His uninching support and sacrifice reect in every step I have been taking for 12 years now.

My father gave me two valuable gifts education and my husband. While all others treated me like a little girl who needed protection, it was Murali who spotted the real potential in me and harnessed it. He groomed my entrepreneurial skills and gave me the needed impetus to reach new heights in all my endeavours.

Why IPR? I can cite two valid reasonsa)

b)

I nursed a great interest in entrepreneurship right from the childhood. My academic background in varied disciplines and my avid interest in research further ignited my desire. A career in IP field that has technology mixed with a legal perspective satiates my intellectual thirst. It has a huge potential as it is in a nascent stage in India and an apt relevance to my qualification. So Novel Patent is here. To my immense delight, the firms I dreamed of working with when I was a student are now my clients.

Support system Murali, who obtained M.Tech (Biomedical) degree along with me, echoes my aspirations. As the 1st generation entrepreneur, I nursed a few apprehensions, but my father-in-law, the late Mr.Janardhana Rao, helped and encouraged me to take the bold step. Mrs.Punyavathi, my mother-in-law, is proud of my success and renders rock-solid support. Even my sister- in-law Jyoti and her husband Siva Prasad Mangaraju are always ready with help. The name – Novel was suggested by my sister-in-law Suvidha. Hence, I describe Novel Patent as the endeavour of whole family. Hiccups The challenge had become rather a bit daunting as I entered motherhood and entrepreneurship at the same time. In the stipulated 20 days, we needed to complete multiple tasks like statutory requirements

including raising loan for the company, building interior workspace, pulling funds and recruiting trainees. As it is totally a new field in India, getting the message across to people was a herculean task. For e.g. EPF enrolling. It took us more than half a day to make the official understand what our services are all about & which category they fall in. Finally, they slotted it in expert services category. We needed to spend 45 minutes on each prospective employee, making them understand what our company does & its tasks. But these are the experiences that helped me grow as an entrepreneur. We have very good laws in place when it comes to IP, but we are lagging behind in their implementation. She at the helm Once in awhile, only when I am

my employees through gender lens. My only demand is that they should do justice to their roles. I am proud that more than 50% of my staff is women. They are given responsibilities based purely on their calibre and performance. The gender factor comes into picture only when we take that extra care to reach them home safely. Sad reality Here I must admit that not all those women are strong enough to pursue their chosen path. Many of them throw away their career for matrimony. I wish to see them leaving the organisation seeking greener pastures, but not fritter away the opportunities given to them for marriage. We employ only engineers and give them prestigious projects. It is sad to see that their wonderful talent going untapped after they enter the wedlock. Status of women It varies from the field to field. There is no discrimination or special privileges for women in the corporate world that involves dealing with the developed nations. But in Indian context, it is a different. I recall one incident when a learned professional made an unsavoury remark on my taking my 4-month baby to a work place. In the US, they applauded a woman carrying her child to the parliament. In our work culture, we do see men being apprehensive about reporting to woman or taking her advice. This must be eradicated.

WE HAVE VERY GOOD LAWS IN PLACE WHEN IT COMES TO IP, BUT WE LAG BEHIND IN THEIR IMPLEMENTATION.

reminded that I am a She Boss that a spark of pride crosses my mind. Otherwise, I am no different from any man at the helm. When I am interacting with outsiders, I find that they, at least out of courtesy, lend their ears, because I am a woman. This makes my job easy. Of course, on certain issues like finances, I did encounter questions like- “Don’t you have a man dealing with it?” When it comes to running my company, I am not much affected as I am focused on my goal and carry out my duties with commitment. I never look at

justice to one side means neglecting the other. I may not be there for my family when they want me but am always there when they need me. Advice to the aspirants Think big; work on viable opportunities; try to add value to society; love what you do and give your best efforts to it.

Future plans I recently started IPR Academy that promotes IPR education and trade by linking industry, research and investors. We are revamping our services to raise the bar and meet the global standards. We have started working on unique research concepts and will implement them in the

Indian women Vs US women I must admit that we are more privileged than many others in the world. We have a great support system- be it helpers for household chores or family members who take charge of our homes. Our social obligations may come in the way of fine-tuning our focusing on work. American women don’t panic in the face of odds as easily as we do. There is an equal distribution duties at workplace and home too. Their society doesn’t look askance at the men who carry out ‘feminine’ tasks.

Unforgettable incident Very obviously, the Hudhud experience. I was here with my child and aged mother-in-law at that time while my parents and husband were in the US. The cyclone tore apart my office. Yet, I managed to shift it to a new place and started the operations within three days. Friends like Shyam Manickam and Uday, and my staff stood by me through the ordeal. Yet, that was an experience which can never be erased from my memory. t is no exaggeration that family-run enterprises dominate the business world in India. The next generations of tycoons are naturally expected to step into their parent’s shoes. Of course, one cannot but help wondering if they do it on their volition or simply compelled to do so. Whatever may be the motives, we find many young leaders, despite earning high degrees from prestigious world universities, taking up proactive roles in their family ventures. Some of them, blessed with an adventurous streak, tread new paths and further embellish their inherited glory. The 25-year-old Bommana Yuvaraj belongs to this category and is here to re-define the legendary empire in his own style. He launched MY Bommana Boutique, making it future-ready. He shares his business with his mother, Mrs.Sunitha. We rope in the son & mom team for some trade talk.

THE RISING SON THROWS LIGHT ON A FEW ANGLES Succession is an inevitable reality in family-run enterprises, Do you agree? Every family business is a startup once up on a time. It is not an easy task to create an trade empire. But once it is built with the help of family unity and honest efforts, it definitely dominates the market. It is obvious that the members of the family too come under the impact of the giant. Successors inherit red | september 2018 | 54

the onus of taking it to the next level. My grandfather the late Mr.Bommana Krishna Murthy, a gold medallist in civil engineering, did not have money to travel to receive his medal. He later rose to the position of the Chief Engineer of the Nagarjunsagar Dam, yet he could not resist the pull of the threads as he hailed from a weavers’ community. However, winning a tailoring contest in which he stitched two shirts in 10 minutes, made him realise his true

calling. He started his textile enterprise in a humble way and eventually established Bommana Brothers in Rajahmundry along with his brother Mr.Ramachandra Rao. My father Mr.Satya Raj Kumar took it to the next level by opening successful outlets in Tirupati, Gajuwaka and Bhimavaram.

Did you come under pressure to carry forth the legacy? Besides enjoying the world of textiles, I have also felt that it is my responsibility. No pressure whatsoever! There is an uncanny similarity in my career path and that of my legendary grandfather. I too studied civil engineering. I obtained my degree from VIT, Vellore and went to Leeds, UK do my masters in International Business. Later, I moved to Harvard for an extension course in e-commerce strategies, following which I served as a manager of Mirchi Hotels, in New Jersey and returned home with the intention giving it back to the city I grew up in. Family run show: Advantages and disadvantages The readymade platform gives us an enviable headstart. The disadvantage is we have to obtain family permission before starting something new. We may lose individuality and act in the same monotonous manner as the previous generations. Does it take away adventure from your life? No, nothing can curtail my spirit. I am very independent. The main reason for my taking up this project is to involve myself in every aspect of business - from purchasing & marketing to accounts & sales. I invested the money I earned in the US in this venture as I did not want to take the support of my father. I also extended the premises to a restaurant. It is an additional source of income for me to run my store without raising any loans.

Bommana caters to middle class. What made you think of a high-end boutique? Yes, till now we targeted the B and C classes. My strategy is to create a place for the A class without losing the B and C segments. Until now we are running the stores with sole proprietorship. I now plan to go for a franchisee concept. How long will it take you to reach the high standards set by your predecessors? I am only 25 and I aspire and strive to reach those standards in another five years. Are you better off compared to the previous generation? Yes. my predecessors did give me a great platform and fame to earn my boutique customer base. But right from facilities like communications to transportation, we have an edge over them in terms of

Life beyond business hours My day starts with a visit to F45 Fitness Studio and almost every day after work I play volleyball with my friends at Beenz Drive Inn. I am a big movie buff. I travel and explore different places when I get time. MY BOMMANA BOUTIQUE, A PROFILE Armed with the experience I gained in two developed nations, I conceptualised this unique boutique and executed it on my terms. The boutique along with a coffee shop is the first of its kind in the state. People can shop and also chill out in the café while those coming to the Glutton’s Garage may find something irresistibly attractive in the boutique. Response We witness around 100 footfalls per day though we operate in a non-commercial residential locality. We provide the latest designs and a pleasant ambience. The customer reviews vouch for it. I experienced the success without any issues in my first project itself, which is a great boost to my future plans. Since it is a boutique, I have learnt to foresee the upcoming fashions. The best part is that we received compliments from the other boutique owners too.

Bommana Brothers- a Profile Bommana Brothers has its prominent presence in Telugu states with 11outlets- Vizag, Gajuwaka, Vijayanagaram, Rajahmundry, Palakollu, Bhimavaram, Secunderabad & Tirupati. The annual turnover is a minimum four crores each. MENTORING MOTHER Mrs.Sunitha again is the chip off the old Bommana block, as she married her cousin Mr.Satya Raj Kumar. Though not formally educated in business administration, she is very well versed with the nuances of textile world. She tells us how she groomed her sons with the hope that at least one of them would take the legacy forward. Grooming Though, I have been a homemaker all through, my evenings were dedicated to the business. After their school, I used to take them to the stores red | september 2018 | 56

to acclimatise them to trade environs and make them realise the essence of family business. The new beginning To our delight, Yuvaraj returned to the family business though my elder son Maniraj stayed back working in the US. The first letters of MY Bommana Boutique are derived from their names. I am also a partner of the boutique and our roles are defined. I select the cloth, design dresses and saris and am good at customer interaction. I have my finger right on the customers’ pulse. Yuvaraj conceptualises marketing strategies.

I AGREE WITH THE SAYING ‘CLOTHES DEFINE THE MAN.’ HENCE WE SHOULD DRESS TO MAKE GOOD IMPRESSIONS.

,,

Are you on the same page? Certainly not, it is expected as we belong to different generations, there are very few things on which we agree. The differences start from the selection of the product. He, being a boy, doesn’t understand the feminine traits and trends. This necessitates a lot of explanation. We generally tour together to select the merchandise. But at times he has to plough a lonely furrow. He clicks the pictures of the items and whatsapps them for my opinion. He seldom accepts my suggestions without an argument. That is when his trouble-shooter father enters the scene. We both go by his decision as he is the most experienced one.

Education vs experience Both Yuvaraj and I agree that experience is more important than education. What I have learnt in the stores is more than what he picked up in the classrooms. Unforgettable experience We had a soft launch of the boutique as Sankranti was round the corner and the entire stock got picked up by our friends, leaving me with nothing for the inauguration. I had to go on a panic buying spree. I returned home on the day of inauguration. Spending hours in tagging and arranging the store, I didn’t even have time to freshen up for the opening ceremony. It was an unforgettable day. Fashion trend We are first in the city to introduce linen saris. We keep limited stock and have a discount sale every month end. So our shelves are always full of fresh and in-trend stock. Clothes have the power to transform lives, your take Yes, first impressions are the best. The first thing onlooker notices is what she wears and how well does she carry it.

Welfare

With the new day, comes new strength and new thoughts,” Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote holds true for Alleviators, a non-profit and non-governmental organisation led by a mere 17-year old G.Harsha Vardhan and his dedicated team of students from various colleges in the city. It was one Instagram story that made Harsha realise problems of the society like poverty, which exists whether we accept it or not. This reality motivated him to deep-dive into burning issues and find out solutions. The objective is to provide a better life for those in need. The idea was deliberated up on and put into action by a group of friends who work for the welfare of the weaker sections of the society.

YOUNG

ENERGY WELL USED

Staying true to their motto- We Work For Cause Not For Applause , they render service and inspire others to volunteer their services and experience the pleasure of selfless acts. How they go about it is what Harsha Vardhan, a student of Sri Chaitanya Junior College, tells in the following narration.

By Chandrika Mantri Genesis Two of my classmates posted an Instagram story that they were planning a visit to Sri Shanthi Ashram (Home for deaf and dumb children) after our 10th board exams, urging people to tag along. That initiation sparked off my desire to take part in welfare activities. I then started the organisation, naming it Alleviators (people who help in lessening the pain). In the very first event itself, 30 of us visited Shanthi Ashram where we spent quality time with the children. We also conducted a drawing session, provided lunch and gave educational support to some of them. Satisfied with the experience, we then started a Facebook and an Instagram page and even a WhatsApp group. Team We are a group of more than red | september 2018 | 58

100 students from various colleges- Sri Chaitanya Junior College, Narayana Junior College, Ascent Junior College, Akash Educational Institutions, Gayatri, GITAM University and Aditya Degree College. We have volunteer meetings every two-three months at RK Beach. In case of emergency, we communicate on Whatsapp. We are united in our thoughts & tasks and encourage healthy discussions. All are cooperative and eager to help. We also have the guidance of India Youth For Society. It also provides us references. Fund & Skill Pool We contribute from our pocket money. Besides, everyone gives at least Rs.100

for an event. We post about the events on our social media to attract the attention of philanthropists who contribute through Paytm. The organisation is divided into four teams based on the areas the volunteers live. Each team has a leader who collects the funds from the volunteers. Track record 1.

Distributed food to homeless.

2.

Provided groceries old clothes to Care & Love Foundation.

3.

Donated cash for a girls marriage.

4.

Regaled the orphans of Ananda Marg Foundation. Gave winter wear, books

5.

Donated cash to Mani who met with an accident at Urvasi Junction & was admitted at Durga Hospital.

6.

To mark National Youth Day, we held a 5 km-run on Beach Road in association with IYFS, NSS (AU), Hello Vizag, Samskruthi Gourav Samstan and Lending Hands.

7.

Donated cash to 10th standard student who is ailing from a kidney problem.

8.

Distributed food packets to 150 homeless people near railway station and RTC complex.

9.

Held a peace rally, protesting the Asifa rape case near GVMC. G.Seetaram, State President, Child Rights Protection Forum, AP, participated in it.

10. Since we are (minors), we cannot donate blood, we try to fulfill the blood requirements, functioning as

intermediaries for Friends Blood Donors Associations. Till date, we have fulfilled nearly 30 such requirements. Unforgettable Incident I recall, the children of Sri Shanthi Ashram sent us off with a salute and a big smile. Our hearts swelled with joy. Yet another incident that touched my heart is the other day my cousin told me that I should donate the money which I set aside for her birthday gift to Alleviators. I am proud of her noble thought. Balance between studies and welfare activities We conduct our activities on public holidays to ensure

our education does not take a backseat. In fact, this gives us an additional edge as, time and again, we share academic updates with one another on our Whatsapp group. I counsel my fellow classmates to motivate them to excel in studies. Our parents understand that we are utilising our time for a good cause rather than wasting it watching TV programmes and movies or partying around. We enjoy an uninching support from them. Future Plans We plan to organise awareness programmes for the needy and underprivileged on various issues, mostly related to education and anticorruption. Obviously, we will do our own research before we set out on the said course of action. This helps us expand our horizons. I want to study MBBS and serve the society.

QUOTES FROM TEAM MEMBERS

Alleviators has taught me a lot- how to help others and take up responsibilities. The happiness in the children’s eyes is the best reward we can ever get. - Sahithi Kotari

I

n this new era of ‘Processed’ and ‘Convenience’ foods, we are left with food lacking nutritional quality. This is what we pay for quick and easy meal times. It is no surprise that the number of people with overweight has shot-up proving that what we eat affects our appearance, well-being and health. Common Complaints: Over 80% of Indians suffer from problems like gas, bloating, stomach pain, constipation, heart burn and fatigue after eating.

A PLATTER OF

G

D

General practices that better digestion Not only what we eat but also how we consume our meals is vital for health. According to Ayurveda, to improve the digestion, the best way is to stimulate agni, or digestion fire, before we begin eating. Weak digestive agni may result in fatigue. It can be countered by eating one-inch piece of fresh ginger with a few drops of lemon juice and few pinches of salt. It should be taken before a full meal. This activates salivary glands and produces the necessary enzymes that help the body absorb nutrients. Balancing digestive agni Digestive agni can be compared to red | september 2018 | 60

fire. If food takes long time to get cooked on low ame, if gets burnt on high ames. If we put a huge log on a low fire it extinguishes it. So we need to go for the right balance of heat while processing food. Similarly, digestive fires should also be balanced to digest meals efficiently and smoothly. The ginger and lemon juice combination boosts the digestive power. The next Ayurvedic recommendation also addresses agni. It suggests taking cold drinks at meals and ice-cold foods is like putting cold water on the burning logs. Iced water (generally served at restaurants), extinguishes the digestive fire. Hence, it is advised to take juice of any kind and water at room temperature. Get into the habit of drinking beverages at room temperature, you are bound to find a dramatic improvement in your digestion and a feeling of well being while eating and after the meal. It’s meal time The best way to avoid problems is to follow the meal time, nature prescribes. The digestive fire is strongest when the sun is strongest i.e. between 12 noon and 2:00 pm as agni is associated with the sun. This is one of the ways Ayurveda seeks to connect our mind and body with environment. Along with the sun our agni also goes down. So, the lunch should be the largest meal of the day when digestive agni is working at it’s optimum potency. Dinner should be lighter than lunch, and should be ideally eaten before 8:00 pm. Eating after 10:00 pm may lead to accumulation of toxins to in the system and you wake up tired the next morning.

Replace white our and with good quality wheat our.

Dry fruits like almonds, groundnuts can be added to diet chart in stipulated quantity.

Children need calcium for their bone development, so it is better you add good amount of milk products to their diet.

Add more vegetable food to your diet. Restrict non-vegetarian to twice/thrice a week.

Salt and oil should be consumed in small quantities. Consuming a mixture of oils (e.g. rice bran & sunower) gives amazing results.

Avoid using hydrogenated vegetable oil (Dalda) completely.

Food for Sound Mind What we eat shapes our character and value system. Make-up of the mind is as important as the body. A weak mind in a strong body is worse than a strong mind in a weak body. The latter can do much harm if gone out of control. Eat good, keep the body, mind and society and generations healthy.

Ingredients of health •

Polished rice should be replaced with half polished rice which is rich in magnesium, B-complex vitamins and wholesome lot of fibre content.

ARIES Mar 21- Apr 19

Lucky for you: Red, 16

If you are self employed, this is a good time to sign foreign contracts and enter into new alliances. Try to adopt unique business strategies, but do not rush to make a decision. There could be a misunderstanding with your boss, but you should be attentive and tactful in handling such scenarios. You can benefit from networking with your colleagues in handling those challenges. Married will not face any major situations or conflicts. Remember to plan a surprise trip for spouse. Singles should strengthen the relationship with their friends.

LEO Jul 23 – Aug 22

TAURUS Apr 20-May 20

Yellow, 28

Your hard work and dedication gets acknowledged. But don’t let all the admiration get to your head. You should take on more responsibilities. Bonding with associates may take a hit. If self-employed, follow your gut when it comes to taking decisions. Involvement in partnerships should be avoided. Singles will finally find their soul mates. Married need to spend less time in the company of those who repeatedly get on their nerves. It is not your responsibility to help everyone. Lucky for you:

Green, 11

Employed should analyse all aspects before switching jobs. Your colleagues will be on your side, even the ones you haven’t had the most promising relationships with. The management may be stubborn, but remember patience and diligence work wonders! If in business, distribute your resources competently. Act thoughtfully. Singles, it is time to flaunt your charisma. But don’t try to cross the line. Untimely actions, disregarding your loved ones’ opinions, having an approach which is too subjective- are the mistakes the married should avoid. Lucky for you:

GEMINI May 21-Jun 20

Brown, 15

Employed should pay attention to the mood of the management before saying anything. Avoid using harsh words and be diplomatic. And do not jump to conclusions. You may have waited a long time, but be assured that everything will fall into place at the end. Tradesmen are recommended to be attentive. You will probably be offered an opportunity to invest in a new venture abroad. If single, do not change yourself just to impress someone. Married, it is time to take a walk down the memory lane to rekindle romance. Lucky for you:

Blue, 27

Those who have their own business should act in an aggressive and risky way. This is the time to implement that quirky project that has been considered impossible by everyone. But, be cautious. You need people you can rely on, who have your back. At workplace, you need to listen to other people’s advice, but only to a certain extent. This is not a good time for job relocation. If married, do not let conflicts develop. Try to adopt a diplomatic approach. Singles need to identify their inspiration.

Lucky for you:

Violet, 13

Employed be honest and don’t let colleagues lead you, directly or subtly. In no event should you incite conflicts. On the other hand, this is an excellent chance to hone your leadership skills through solving problems. This is a good time for businesspersons to sign a foreign deal. Do not shift responsibility onto your partner. Treat your near & dear with affection & warmth. Don’t rush to make a decision regarding people you hardly know. Singlesform new attachments, but only if you are sure of them. Lucky for you:

stance, has his finger on the right timing. After all, the game is all about the timing. There is a view that holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and State Assembly may not augur well for regional parties. Moreover, he wants to turn the people’s focus entirely on him and his performance. Once he consolidates his position at home, he will have all the time to focus on 17 Lok Sabha seats from the state, which eventually help him play a key role at the Centre. However, some say timing may be a small matter because people will judge KCR by what he did during his term, not by what he will do in the next few days. While some feel he is in a safe zone as there is a considerable buzz over his developmental activities, the others feel there is anti-incumbency against the TRS to show KCR the door. Anyway, we are in for some interesting times as Telangana gears up for early polls.

However, somewhere MS Dhheeraj knew that he was not meant for a 9 to 5 job, reporting to seniors and having restricted leave terms. He took the plunge into the world of business and he did it with such earnestness that his passion became his brand. That was how the city's one of the most sought after car detailing service center, Amigo Autospa came into existence. She is simple, humble and shy. imple and soft-spoken, she is certainly a woman with a strong mind and will. Born in a conservative family of

Zamindars of Gujarat, Bina Rao was always inclined towards art. At a very young age, she realised her passion and decided to commit to it. Thus began her journey as a fashion designer and a design consultant. Her brainchild Creative Bee reects this ideology by being the one-stop destination for authentic, and pure handlooms and weaves in contemporary designs. In a light-hearted conversation, Bina shares how she weaved her way to success.

red | september 2018 | 28

Formative years I was born in a village in Gujarat. So I was brought up in the lap of nature. Living in a mansion on an Estate which had plantations all around, my time was spent playing with the children of the domestic helps, estate manager, farmers and others. I was a pampered and protected child. In spite of being a bright kid, I was never keen on going to school. Yet, I was enrolled at the age of 6, as education was always a must. My parents encouraged me to learn music and art which later became my hobbies.

Introduction to fashion I was never a math and science geek. I loved colours and grew up wearing khadi as my father Dr.Mani Bhai Desai was a Gandhian, a doctor, a philanthropist with a progressive mind. He had always encouraged me to pursue my heart’s desire. So, after completing my 11th standard, my uncle and aunt who are from Baroda told me that MSU had the best Fine Arts stream. The moment I saw the college, I fell in love with it. Five years of graduation and two years of P.G went by in a blink. I joined NID to study textile designing.

The beginning After my education, and marriage with Kesav Rao, I started off as a design consultant in Hyderabad. During this phase I actually started visiting villages to study the skills of weavers and understand their lives. I understood a few harsh realities when I started working with them and realised that there was a lot more to address. I founded Creative Bee, a design studio with an extensive R&D wing, natural dye farm, well-trained weaving groups, and retail and export marketing divisions. Need of the hour I realised that we had to create a financially stable environment for weavers and sustainable work to keep their skills alive. The objective was to make them hone their skills and produce the world class quality products. Creative Bee, which works on a number of private, government and international projects, is the amalgamation of my passion and education. We were the first computerized textile design studio in the city. It took us almost a decade to streamline all stages of handloom production and marketing. Rao helped me a lot in setting up the block print facility and he researched on natural dyes to find a formula for fast, washable natural dyes. By then he was an established artist, having his shows within the country and abroad. Yet he spared a lot of his time to visit villages with me and finally found a formula to modify the looms with the minimum cost

and to create better quality hand woven products. Now we are like one-stop solution to those who want to create handcrafted and eco-friendly fashion. Many established brands and ace designers collaborate with us for design development and production. The culture of Creative Bee We now have a retail section which sells our designs. We keeps inventing new weaves & designs. When I started talking about my collections abroad, I realised that there was a lot of demand and appreciation for Indian handlooms. But our artisans didn't make what the world wants in terms of finished products. They didn’t have enough resources, I realised the importance of

and also in Telangana. We have an ongoing pilot project ' Disha for 2000 women weavers. It empowers marginalised weavers & handloom workers to turn into entrepreneurs. Sustainable fashion is the key Sustainable fashion is not just a word or a trend, it is a whole approach to dos and don’ts, like sustainable farming. The entire value chain gets continuous work with fair wages. The person or company who manages the next chain after the production is the key player. The QC happens there and rejecting any damaged material and penalising the artisan is not a sustainable practice. In other words, the idea is to give the artisans sustainable income and not to punish them for any damages that may happen at their end. So, to achieve this, designers/business houses must find ways and means of using the damaged fabric in the best possible way. Trends like upcycling and recycling are very popular in developed countries. Artisan must be the last person to be penalised for the damage as the weavers work in confined unorganised spaces with poor lighting. At Creative Bee stores, we have discount corner where all the pieces with minor defects are sold for a nominal price. Buyers who are extremely passionate about weaves and design, pick them. We find even top celebrities buying them.

There was a lot of demand for our handlooms. But our artisans didn't make what the world wants in terms of finished products. large-scale interventions which can come from government. I availed the opportunity to be on the first Advisory Board of Ministry of Textiles, worked and designed policies such as India Handlooms Brand (IHB), Handloom Day and Cluster Development Programmes. I become impatient when the policies take a long time to come into effect or don’t reach the grass-root level. UN call Our recent engagement with UN as senior consultants has given an opportunity to work on larger projects in East Africa

Lessons from the journey To have smooth functioning of handloom production, you need to build trust a good relationship with the weavers. Respect their creativity. Let them spell out what they want and modify your design or costing accordingly. When I started off on my venture, I knew where I was heading, but people around me were skeptical. Undaunted, I have pursued my goals and it paid off. Being honest to handlooms and eco-friendly fabric is the need of the day. I am honoured feel happy to have been a part of this mission.

son Mani, who has studied English literature from Cardiff University, saw the potential of our business. He plans to take it further with same ideology and better vision. He wants to work for the welfare of producers. Balancing work and life They are not two different entities for me as designing is my passion. Hence balancing has never been the matter of concern. Thankfully, Rao has been with me in the journey and is equally passionate. However, the constant struggle to make a difference and to contribute to a

Competition I am blind to competition. My motto has been to create designs in their purest and truest form, ensure that our artisans are benefitted and our clients are happy. That is why Creative Bee is called a social business example. Also, we have multi-layered production expertise like sourcing variety of hand-spun yarn, weaving, knowhow of natural and other safe dyes, hand printing, painting, clamp dye, shibori- all under one roof. We balance between Indian & international markets like Japan, USA, UK. The wave of handlooms It is nice to see that more and more people and designers are embracing handlooms. But honestly, from the creators' perspective, I believe our job is not done by creating work for them. We have to make an effort to impact their lifestyle. We also render support to the their children’s education. The way forward Creative Bee continues to cater to its clients and evolve. My red | september 2018 | 30

larger social interest and the travel involved may take a toll on your health and make you age. Anyway, where this is a will, there is a way. My passion even now fills me with the same zeal and energy that I had when I set off. Personal note I met Rao at MSU, when he joined to pursue PG. Our love story was extremely filmy, like Qayamat se Qayamat thak plot. Till I told them about Rao, I thought my parents were very progressive and would easily accept. I was proved wrong and my parents disagreed, Of course his parents were fine with it. We respected our families decision and waited, continuing with our studies and research. Finally, we got their consent. As a partner, Rao has been extremely supportive. He is the best natural dyer and can create phenomenal coulours with great elan.

vent management is all about being a

catalyst- that is what everyone thinks. But this couple begs to differ and says

managing events is about managing people and making things happen as the customer envisions. He is dynamic and she is smart. Nitin Rijhwani and Prasanna hail from illustrated business families, yet instead of joining their family ventures, they decided to follow their own distinct path. Their friendship turned into marriage and later, graduated into business partnership. Their common dream and vision has crystalised into an Avant Media the most sought-after event management firm in the city. Conversing with this couple proves that maxim ‘opposites attract’ holds good. They enjoy a great rapport not only at their personal level but also in the business.

The begining Nitin: I belong to a huge Sindhi joint family full of aunts, uncles and cousins and most of them are involved in the family businesses. I studied MBA from ICFAI University, specialising in marketing and finance. I have always been good at my studies and at the same time was good at sports too. With all modesty, I would say I have been an all-rounder.

red | september 2018 | 32

Prasanna: I hail from a Telugu family and studied MBA. It is after marrying Nitin that things changed for me and I started actively pursuing my career. The inception of Avant Media Nitin: Our family was involved in varied businesses like jewellery, foodgrains etc. So I started working very early, that was when I was studying my 10th standard and continued to do so till I finished my graduation degree. Basically, my role

was to handle the customers and the counter, taking their orders, writing invoices, managing cash & payments to creditors. I also would go on weekly sampling to certain defined areas for sales development and for collection of bills. However, I took a break from all this to study MBA and post that I was moved to my jewellery business. In this phase, I was dating Prasanna and had to take decisions on the personal front too.

That was when I quit my family business, moved to Dubai and started life afresh. I worked for an event management company there. After gaining sufficient experience, I decided to move back and founded Avant Media. Prasanna: After obtaining my Post Graduation degree, I worked abroad for sometime. After returning to India, I realised that it was difficult to find a job with the right profile. That was when Nitin and I decided to start our own. Initial hurdles Nitin: The initial phase was very tough. We started off with a mere Rs.3 lakh capital and shared a single workstation. We would travel, work and come back together. We didn't have clients and also vendors to support us. With the limited funds we had to manage the office rent, commute and generate leads to take our business forward. With the help of Just Dial, we got ourselves registered on a paid subscription. Through that channel, we would get our leads and started catering to them. Another hurdle was to find the right vendors who become part of your team to execute events in a very professional manner. We had quite a few events where we lost money as the services delivered by the vendor was not of good quality. Eventually, we cracked our first corporate deal with Zensar Technologies and since then there is no looking back. Within two years, we could build a group of clients. Zensar Technologies, LiquidHub India Pvt Ltd, Cybage Software are a few to name. Prasanna: To execute events, you need the right vendors. So, when we started, the major hiccup was finding the right

vendors who would execute the job properly and with utmost transparency. Another major hiccup we still face is convincing clients. You may be very good at your work, but it is very difficult to assure the client that the job would be done on time. Facing competition Nitin: We have always been looking at competition from in a different way. We have always compared ourselves with what we had been the last year. We

Prasanna: Competition is unavoidable. We always believed in focussing on ourselves than being bogged down by what others are doing. Give your 100% for whatever you do is the mantra. USP Nitin: Flexibility, customer retention, employee care and professional approach for events Prasanna: Service, timely delivery, value for money. Memorable moments Nitin: Touch wood, we have many memorable moments that we share with clients like Zensar, Dr. Reddy's, T-Hub and more. However, Zensar being the first I share it here. Zensar has been the one to give us the break into corporate events and we have been serving it for the last five years. Ever since we did the first event in Aug 2013, Annual Excellence Awards at - Sheraton which was then Regenta, we got to do four Annual Family Day events with the company paving way to a long-term association. As the saying goes, a retained client is more than six new clients.

EVENT MANAGEMENT CALLS FOR A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY. ONE MISTAKE, YOU WOULD BE SPOILING SOMEONE ELSE'S JOY.

never compare ourselves with any other agency in Hyderabad or compete with them. Our only mantra was, what and how much business did we do and how shall we improvise. Now after completing five years in the field, we are very delighted to have impaneled with TCS, Microsoft, Google, Valuelabs, Mentor Graphics, Wells Fargo, Capgemini, Times Group etc.

Prasanna: One day we got a call from T Hub, India's finest Incubator center for startup. They were already planning the celebration of their first anniversary. We were one of the three agencies who was pitching for the project. We gave all our insights for the project along with designs and budget and bagged the project and it was one of the biggest events that we had managed till now. It was attended by more than 1500 delegates and most of them were VIPs.

red | september 2018 | 33

Nightmares Nitin: The work with corporates is and straight. So we have never encountered any problems. More often than not we face challenges when we do social events like birthdays and weddings as the clients are not very clear about what they want and also do not define the budgets. Prasanna: A few social events. I can't take names.

Development, Creative, Operations & Accounts.

Prasanna: Belief in self, honesty and respect for your team

Prasanna: We wish to have a global presence

Handling disagreements Nitin: This is a very touchy subject. While handling disagreements, I always look at solutions. I have always taken the responsibility for anything that goes wrong. Many times, whether we go wrong or the client goes wrong, we bear the losses and expenses. We look at it as a lesson. We look at the long-term association and these small time losses as investment for the future good times.

Defining entrepreneurship. Nitin: Business is more about passion and dreams. Passion helps you to chase your dreams. Having a family background of business, I always wanted to be an entrepreneur and this made me start my own event management firm. I wanted to make a difference to my life and also be a part of the growing economy of India. Prasanna: Trust, honesty, dedication, time management.

THE CLIENT SHOULD KNOW YOUR WORTH WHEN HE PAYS YOU AND YOU NEED TO MAKE THE EVENT WORTHY OF HIS TRUST.

The mantra for success Nitin: Have a clear goal, defined path and walk the path and keep moving, keep learning, network and travel. Have the right team and believe in it and know your financial capacity

Prasanna: Difficult question to answer!! There are times when we have ad ons and the client says go ahead. Later on they start haggling. We have to be an active listener. As far as social events are concerned, it is very difficult to handle disagreements. Honestly, they want everything for free.

Future Nitin: The way our business is growing, we have a clear picture of where our company is going to be soon. Our vision is to be a boutique agency which focuses on managing a group of clients with work spread over the year and deliver memorable events. We wish to have offices across tier 1 and tier 2 cities. We wish to be a 10 crore plus firm. We started as just me and Prasanna, now we are a team of 6 people working full time and 60 contractual vendor teams when we have events. We wish to have a dedicated team for expanding the organisation in a very effective manner, the departments will be as per the respective nature of work Business Shoot by Dinakar Pamu

When I joined, I knew that I would evolve myself with the changing trends to make a difference. Therefore, many ideas have been implemented. One such idea was the launching of a new format store P. Handling Competition Competition is inevitable and must be taken positively. There is no formula adopting which, we can avoid competition. However, I must stress that we are extremely customer-centric. We strive to give our customers an innovative jewelry shopping experience. We believe that customers are our family and to stay closer and serve our family better, we have 53 Customer Service Centres across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. USP It may sound like boasting, but I have to say this. Many of our customers come back to us, appreciating the quality of our diamonds. We believe, in a diamond the cut is everything. we are united as far as the goal is concerned. That is what makes us different from the lot. So, we three are different yet united. We are very similar when it comes to passion for work, customer-centric mind-set and we are also obedient and responsible team players. The dissimilarity is- each of us has his own style of managing teams. Handling Disagreements Business is a team effort and wherever you have more than two people working together, disagreements are inevitable. I feel that disagreements are healthy as they allow you to think better. However, open communication, regular reviews among the board members, professional structure to build a brand which will last for centuries to come is what it needs to get the best out of disagreements. Success mantra Our mantra for success is based on two factors- ensuring that every customer receives the PMJ Group’s hospitality and making them a part of the PMJ family. We believe in raising the bar for ourselves, striving hard to ensure that we handcraft every piece of jewelry to perfection. We strive to make every celebration of the customer memorable.

Lucky for you:

Businessmen, don’t go by others’ opinions, evaluate the alternatives. Allies are good, but it is up to you whether you want to have them or not. This is a good time for largescale but thoughtful investments. If you do not work for yourself, do not get involved in a conflict that is not related to you. Focus on your own capabilities and working prospects. Singles, if you decide to take a step forward, something unforgettable is guaranteed to happen to you. Married should be extra attentive to the words they utter.

Oct 23 – Nov 21

Lucky for you:

Silver, 19

Those in business should think down to the finest detail. This is not the time to relax or you could lose the thing which you have been moving towards for so long. Employed, rejoice as you will get a salary hike or will be given an extremely important project. This is the time to prove your mettle. Singles, it is likely that you may meet someone with whom you will have a long term ties. However, take it slow and steady. Married should take out spouse for a romantic dinner date or trip abroad, and spend quality time.

Chocolate, 18

Businesspersons need to think before getting into new alliances. It is important to carry out a few reforms within your business. You should be the one to know how valuable those changes are and going to be. Since cooperation is important, you need to join forces and pull all your combined resources together. If employed, you should work a little harder and longer if you want to succeed. This is a good time to improve your professional skills. Singles should not rush to change their status. You definitely should not play the game according to someone else’s rules.

Lucky for you:

Those who work for themselves will receive support by forming new unions. But there is always a risk of them being unreliable. The main thing is not to hesitate to take advantage of new opportunities and alternatives. If employed, you need to be 100% confident in your own beliefs before getting into any argument. Do not rush to take on new projects, even if they seem to be exceptionally successful. Singles can really fix a lot in their lives. Feel free to apologise and do not hesitate to forgive. If in a relationship, do not play with fire.

Lucky for you:

Turquoise, 27

Those who work for others need to repose trust in themselves, and they will enjoy immense benefits. On the other hand, this is a good time to acquire or invest. If in business, you should consider expansion. Your allies will help you, but if you believe that there are not enough available resources, don’t go down that path. You are in dire need of clearly-defined plans to fulfill your dreams. Singles need to concentrate, and apply some out-ofthe-box thinking to conquer their crush’s heart and soul. Married will have to work hard to please their spouse.

Lucky for you:

It is not a good time to trust anyone at workplace, even though working with your colleagues definitely helps you achieve greater results. Those who have their own business have every chance of understanding the situation clearly, right from the beginning. Someone will probably tell you or hint at something, maybe unintentionally. It does not matter how you get the information, it is important how you use it. Pay more attention to the technical side of an issue. Married will enjoy a sensual and romantic period. Singles will be successful in setting priorities for the future.
