Welcome Welcome

Beneath the razzle-dazzle exterior of Dreamgirls (and believe us, it’s incredible) is a glimpse into the challenge artists face in practicing their craft. Even the super talented must navigate stress, sacrifice, and self-doubt nearly every step of the way. But … the beauty that can result from their struggle, both for an audience and for the artist themselves as they discover their unique voice, is quite simply indescribable. Truly, it’s the stuff of dreams.

Red Mountain Theatre strives to be a home for artists, and for the creative hopes of our community. What a privilege it is to stand in the presence of these remarkable journeys every day and to share the magnificent results with you. We hope you’ll take it all in, bask in the beauty before you, and leave inspired to tackle your own journey wherever it may lead.

With gratitude,

RED MOUNTAIN THEATRE is a Tony Awardwinning nonprofit organization committed to enriching the cultural landscape of Birmingham and beyond through unique, high-quality professional theatre and performing arts education. Established in 1979 as Summerfest, RMT has grown to become the preeminent year-round professional musical theatre organization in Alabama. In tandem with our professional productions that engage more than local and national artists, RMT conducts one of the most highly-regarded Arts Education Programs in the South, reaching 17,000 students each year. RMT is not only developing the musical theatre skills of young artists, but building our city’s future leaders.

TOM EYEN (Book & Lyrics) was an American playwright, lyricist, television writer and director. He received a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for Dreamgirls in 1981. Eyen is best known for works at opposite ends of the theatrical spectrum. Mainstream theatergoers became acquainted with him in 1981, when he partnered with composer Henry Krieger and director Michael Bennett to write the book and lyrics for the hit Broadway musical Dreamgirls. Eyen’s career started, however, with experimental theatre that he wrote and directed Off-Off Broadway in the 1960s. This led to his Off-Broadway success with The Dirtiest Show in Town (1970), a musical revue, and Women Behind Bars (1975), a camp parody of women’s prison exploitation films. Eyen died of AIDS-related complications in Palm Beach, Florida at the age of fifty.

HENRY KRIEGER (Music) began composing for Off-Off-Broadway in his twenties. Soon, collaborations with Tom Eyen and Broadway director/producer/choreographer Michael Bennett led to a workshop of what was originally entitled Big Dreams. After numerous rewrites, and an out-of-town tryout in Boston, Dreamgirls came to Broadway in 1981 and was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards (including Best Score), winning six. One song, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” became a top hit, and others became popular as well. Twenty-five years later, the film version of Dreamgirls, directed by Bill Condon and starring Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx and Beyonce, was released and the soundtrack became a number-one album. Mr. Krieger also composed

the scores to The Tap Dance Kid (1983-85), and the acclaimed Side Show (1997-98), written with Bill Russell and directed and choreographed by Robert Longbottom. He has been nominated for both Oscar and Tony Awards, and won Grammys for his work.

VASTHY MOMPOINT (Director, Choreographer) is excited to return to her hometown to make her directorial debut in Dreamgirls! Choreography: Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (Roku), Cursed Friends (Comedy Central,) The Prom Movie (Netflix), Miracle Workers (TBS), Anything Goes (Breunu University). Broadway: Good Vibrations, Hot Feet, Mary Poppins, Ghost, Soul Doctor, Rocky the Musical, SpongeBob SquarePants the Musical, and The Prom. Film/TV: High School Musical the Series (Krystal), Nora from Queens (Lehana), NCIS LA (Janique), The Bold and the Beautiful (Dr. Ricks), Baby Shark’s Big Show (Briny the Whale), The Winx Club (Layla) Vasthy runs and owns a children’s entertainment company: Vasthy & Friends. In 2022, she released her debut children’s music album, “Sing, Dance, Play” which can be heard on all music streaming platforms. Vasthy is currently on a writing scholarship with Saturday Night Live and The Upright Citizen Brigade and has written and performed in the CBS Sketch Comedy Showcase.

CHRISTI TOYER (Assistant Director) is no stranger to the Red Mountain Theatre stage! Her most recent production was Memorial, where she starred in and directed the staged reading. She has also appeared in High School Musical, Dreamgirls, Hairspray, and The Odd Couple, The Female Version, just to name a few. Christi has also been a long-time acting coach for RMT. She is super excited to serve in the role of Assistant Director for Dreamgirls! Christi has performed in this show twice with RMT and once with The Black Rep in St. Louis, MO. She would like to dedicate her contribution to this show to her daughter, India-Rayne Toyer. “Never stop dreaming, it’s your birthright as a child of God! I love you Bunny!”

It is incredibly important to us that this list is accurate. If you find an error, please accept our apology and allow us to correct it by contacting our Development Department at development@ redmountaintheatre.org or 205-324-2424.

RMT is continually expanding our reach and impact in the Birmingham community –and even the state of Alabama. But, this growth must be fueled with fiscal stability and long-term sustainability. To that end, RMT has established a planned giving initiative named for an incredible woman, Carolyn King, who gave generously to RMT during her lifetime and also planned for those gifts to continue past her time on earth. She was a blessing to so many and now serves as a shining example of dedication to the generations to come.

The Society that bears her name is comprised of those who have included RMT in a will retirement plan, charitable lead trust, charitable remainder trust, or life insurance policy that contributes to RMT upon their passing.

Won’t you join these donors in planning now for RMT’s vital work into the future?* We’d be grateful to include you in the Society!
