HAPPY HOLIDAYS! ‘Tis the season for a little JOY! And, don’t we all NEED it after such a challenging year and nine months! Holiday Spectacular is back and bigger than ever, and we’re proud to present it to you in our new home, a labor of love and beacon of hope that kept us going as we navigated through the Pandemic. Through the generosity of our incredible community, we built something truly grand in the heart of this Magic City, and can hardly wait to share this unforgettable inaugural season with you. This year’s Holiday Spectacular is bursting at the seams with laughs, smiles, and good cheer that will warm your heart. As you enjoy each number, we hope you’ll contemplate the teamwork you’re witnessing. From backstage crew to the sound booth and from the spotlight operators to the performers, many (about 100!) will work as one to bring you an incredible experience you’ll not soon forget! This show is just the beginning of an amazing season in the new Arts Campus! Don’t miss the Calypso-flavored music of Once on This Island in February. Then in April, we’re bringing you the breathtaking, Tony Award-winning musical Once, adapted from the Oscar-winning and Grammy-nominated movie of the same name. And we don’t stop there! We’ll dance on into the summer with Kinky Boots, which includes Tony Award-winning original score by pop icon Cyndi Lauper. Rounding out the season is the Belle of the Ball, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. We hope you’ll take the amazing ride with RMT this season – the best is yet to come!

RMT Youth Ensembles: Meet Andrew Glassford At Red Mountain Theatre, one of our missions is to educate, train, and polish the performing arts skills of young artists. The RMT Youth Ensembles help us fulfill that mission through the efforts of an elite group of musical theatre performers (ages 9-18) who rehearse year-round. To give our audiences an inside look at the Youth Ensembles, we sat down with high school senior Andrew Glassford, who has taken on leadership of the Youth Ensembles this year as its president. He has been a part of the RMT YE for 11 years. RMT: How did you get involved with the Youth Ensembles? Andrew: I started doing RMT’s summer and winter camps when I was 6. I heard about Sprouts and auditioned when I was old enough. What has your journey with the program been like? Fantastic. It’s been the most consistent part of my life. Looking back, I can remember how RMT worked to improve my skills by meeting me where I was. They had classes for children of all talent levels so that I was never thrown in the deep end, but I could advance when I was ready. You’ve taken on new responsibility as president of the Youth Ensembles this year. What made you want to pursue that role? I was close friends with last year’s president and vice president, and they taught me that leading isn’t about putting a nice name on your resume; it’s about staying late after rehearsals to clean up, writing rehearsal reports, and dealing with nitty-gritty logistics. Someone’s gotta do it, and for all that RMT’s done for me, I wanted this to be my way of giving back. Were you nervous at all stepping into the role? To be honest, not really. The RMT staff were very accommodating as I learned the ropes, and the Ensembles are the most supportive friends I have. In what ways do you try to set an example for others as president? I try to stay as enthusiastic as possible. That means paying attention, memorizing songs, the whole nine yards. But I don’t do it resentfully out of some boring obligation; I do it because it’s fun! The Youth Ensembles have a big performance coming up in RMT’s Holiday Spectacular 2021. What can audiences expect? It would be easier to list what they shouldn’t expect. We’re pulling out all the stops for this one. We will be tapping, jump roping, and kick-lining our way through the holidays. And you didn’t hear this from me, but there might be some special, non-human actors! What is your favorite number in the show? The Finale. I know it’s cheesy, but that song has literally been the soundtrack to my life. I still get a little choked up every time I hear those first few chords. Do you have a favorite memory of a past Holiday Spectacular? It was actually my first year in Previews. Opening night, opening number. Just as the first soloist was about to sing, one of the snow machines fell from the ceiling. Thankfully, nobody was hurt, but Keith’s reaction was priceless. He strolled up onstage, did a double-take, and had “a little educational moment” with the audience. Is there anything else you’d like to say about RMT or the Youth Ensembles? What RMT does here is invaluable, regardless of what you may want to do. I’m planning to study Physics and Economics, about the two least theatre-esque things out there. But I don’t regret a single second that I’ve spent in the ensembles. It’s about more than doing a timestep or singing in rhythm; it’s about learning to tell stories, make friends, and above all, have fun!

PRODUCTION & DESIGN TEAM Red Mountain Theatre is a Tony Award-winning nonprofit organization committed to enriching the cultural landscape of Birmingham and beyond through unique, high-quality professional theatre and performing arts education. Established in 1979 as Summerfest, RMT has grown to become the preeminent year-round professional musical theatre organization in Alabama. In tandem with our professional productions that engage more than local and national artists, RMT conducts one of the most highly-regarded Arts Education Programs in the South, reaching 17,000 students each year. RMT is not only developing the musical theatre skills of young artists, but building our city’s future leaders. Keith Cromwell (Director, Choreographer) Keith Cromwell brought 25 years of global directing and performing experience to Birmingham when he took the helm of Red Mountain Theatre as Executive Director in 2003. Under his leadership, the organization experienced year over year growth, becoming one of the top ten arts organizations in the state. In 2021, he led RMT to the opening of a decades-long dream and cultural asset – a 60,000 square foot Arts Campus in the burgeoning Parkside District. Beyond Birmingham, Keith has put RMT on the national artistic map with, among other things, its participation on Broadway as part of the producting team for The Bridges of Madison County, Once on This Island (2018 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical), and Moulin Rouge! (2020 Tony Award for Best Musical). Roy Lightner (Director, Choreographer) is an award-winning creator, director, and choreographer as well as the Singh Associate Artistic Director at RMT. He recently joined the Department of Theatre at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as an Assistant Professor. His work spans internationally including productions and immersive events for GOOGLE, Lincoln Center, the Stephen Sondheim Center, Transcendence Theatre Company, MTWichita, Music Theatre of Kansas City, Sonoma County, Geva Theatre, Cape Playhouse, Westin Playhouse, Hangar Theatre, and more totaling over 60 productions worldwide. Previously he was on faculty at Ithaca College’s Musical Theatre program and served as Associate Artistic Director for Transcendence Theatre Company.
Bradford H. Forehand (Director, Choreographer) is the Abroms Director of Education at Red Mountain Theatre. He received his Bachelor of Music in Musical Theatre from the University of Mobile in 2009. In 2014, he completed his Master of Fine Arts in Theatre for Youth at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, where he also worked as a freelance actor, director, and teaching artist. Prior to starting at RMT, Bradford taught and directed at Lexington Children’s Theatre, Childsplay, and The Coterie Theatre. Favorite directing credits include Wiley and the Hairy Man, State Fair, Jester’s Cap and RMT’s productions of G2K Once Upon a Mattress, Once On This Island Jr., School of Rock, and Addams Family Young@Part. Formally educated in flute, piano, vocal, and percussion performance, Anthony has won several national competitions, and has had the privilege of studying with and participating in masterclasses led by some of the top artists in the world. In addition to his work with the Education Department at Red Mountain, Anthony has extensive experience in higher education, having provided musical direction and taught courses in auditioning, musicianship, and vocal technique at Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Richmond, and William and Mary. anthonysmithmusic.com Heather Hood’s (Costume Designer) mother was a wonderful seamstress so there was always a sewing machine in the house. Heather learned to sew because she had unlimited funds for fabric from her father, but a finite budget for purchased clothing. She is a proud University of Alabama graduate with a degree in Costume Design and a minor in Clothing, Textiles and Design. After a brief 30-year hiatus to open, buy and run several clothing stores on the beautiful Gulf Coast, while working with several dance companies, she returned to the theatre world via Red Mountain Theatre. Heather also runs a non-profit: Project Grace Haiti (projectgracehaiti.com). Always a new adventure around the corner.
