From the sefnl desk Welcome to the SEFNL Berwick Motor Group 2017 Premiership Season! It only feels like yesterday that we were celebrating the 2016 Premiers. Well done to all sides in football and netball who were victorious on that last day in September. As the new season is upon us, there is a massive buzz around SEFNL with all clubs ready to play for four points! In 2017, the Under 19 competition will increase to 10 teams. Both Narre Warren and Cranbourne are fielding two teams while Tooradin-Dalmore return to the fold, with Hampton Park not fielding an U19 team. This year the U19 competition will be run under a conference system where we will see each team play each other once in the first nine rounds before then being split into 2 pools made from the top 5 and bottom 5 for the second half of the season, so that there is a more even playing field. Each pool will play off in their own finals series. For Netball, it will once again mirror the 2016 season competition wise.
Round 1 – 1st April: Opening Round Round 2 – 8th April: Split Round – feature game Good Friday Hampton Park v Doveton Round 3 – 22nd April: ANZAC Round Round 4 – 29th April Round 5 – 6th May: Pink Round May 13th: AFL Victoria Community Championships – SEFNL v Hampden @ The Holden Centre A few new people and initiatives for the 2017 season in SEFNL. We welcome Lauren Bourke to our Board. Lauren has an extensive background in netball across SEFNL previously being involved in the Berwick Netball Club. One of our new initiatives is the record has now gone digital. Every Friday night we will release the record for your reading pleasure, along with the record going digital it will also become an interactive record, so start pushing those buttons. Best of luck to all teams in the opening round!
There will be plenty of events and themed rounds during the 2017 season so make sure you keep an eye out for what’s happening. Just to name a few in the first 5 rounds:

A message from afl south east Welcome Finally the first week of our 2017 season has arrived with 4 games in SEFNL and a solo game between Tyabb and Hastings in the MPNFL. On behalf of the AFL South East Commission I wish all 10 clubs competing this week end a successful start to the season. For me, having been in this role for just over 2 months now, it is exciting to be able to witness first hand a game of football and netball. Beaconsfield have kindly offered me an invitation to the “Battle of the Creek,” their traditional clash with Berwick. I look forward to seeing the enthusiasm and spectacle of community sport. I note that both teams played in the football finals in 2016, with Berwick being too good in the Preliminary Final. However, as was seen in round 1 of the AFL, 2016 form counts for nothing and I look forward to a high quality game. Looking at the 2016 netball ladder, I see that Berwick have some work to do to make up some ground on Beaconsfield. Interesting to note that Berwick finished 9th in A Grade yet their B Grade played off in the Grand Final, which hopefully points to a better A Grade 2017 season. Tyabb v Hastings While the MPNFL doesn’t kick off in full until next week, there is one important game between local rivals Tyabb and Hastings. Let’s hope that the game attracts a big crowd and provides a boost to the hard working volunteers at Tyabb. I hear often an argument that the grand finalists should play in round 1 the following year. I’m not a supporter of that policy. This week is a case in point. Here we have a team who finished on the bottom of the ladder in 2016 facing up to the premier in a single fixture. There will be plenty of local interest I am sure and a positive financial outcome for Tyabb. SEFNL V Hamden League AFL Victoria have announced that the Worksafe Community Championship match between SEFNL and Hamden League will be played at the Holden Centre on Saturday May 13. SEFNL coach Jock Holland will be pitted against Hamden local Jonathan Brown. Between them they played in 3 AFL Premierships so it should be a good tactical battle. On the same day the MPNFL will play Geelong on the MCG prior to an AFL fixture, so it will be a big day for AFL South East competitions in Melbourne’s premier sporting precinct. The match will be a great opportunity for SEFNL to show its current ranking does not coincide with the quality of the league. Good luck to all those selected in the squad.
New Coaches At the season launch on March 24th, it was fascinating to listen to the thoughts of the coaches. SEFNL has 6 new coaches for the 2017 season and each of them sounds impressive. As a lifetime Melbourne supporter I am particularly delighted to see Aaron Davey (Doveton) and Doug Koop (Officer) join the ranks this year. Both played in successful Melbourne eras, playing regularly in finals during their time. Sadly no premiership! They are joined by Leigh McQuillan (Beaconsfield), Stewart Kemperman (Berwick), Dean Warren (Hampton Park) and Ash Green (Pakenham). Player Payment Framework I will have a bit more to say on this in later records, however just to note here that we are now entering the first year of AFL Victoria’s “Allowable Player Payment Framework” better known in footy speak as a Salary Cap. It is designed to address escalating player payments and assist in the sustainability of community based clubs. The same Cap applies to SEFNL and MPNFL and clubs have been briefed on its implementation. SEFNL Partners AFL South East welcome back our “Platinum Partner Parklea” for 2017. Also a special welcome to our new AFLSE and SEFNL Major Partners: Chisholm Institute, Berwick Motor Group, Cleanaway and United Petroleum. We also welcome Support Partners: Sherwood Sportswear, TLA Worldwide, P3 Sports and Recovery, Walk on Podiatry and Physioworks. We greatly appreciate all your support Competition As club administrators will know, AFL South East is conducting a review of its competitions during 2017. One of the aims of the review is to ensure we conduct and manage competitive leagues. To that end I am interested to see that over the past 4 years the SEFNL Premierships have been shared around between Cranbourne, Berwick, Beaconsfield and Narre Warren. With all due respect to those clubs it would be great to see one of the other 5 continue the trend in 2017. Have a great season!

A message from afl Victoria WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country 2017 Season Welcome Excitement is brewing across Victoria for the return of community football. Whether you are playing, coaching, umpiring, volunteering or cheering on your team from the sidelines, the month of April brings with it a feeling of optimism and anticipation for what lies ahead for season 2017. Following the successful implementation of the Player Points System last season, football competitions across the State have been busily preparing for the introduction of the Allowable Player Payment Framework in 2017. Part of AFL Victoria’s Community Club Sustainability Program, the Allowable Player Payment Framework aims to support and grow Australian Football at a community level by supporting volunteers and ensuring club sustainability. The work carried out by Region Commissions, in conjunction with leagues and clubs, has been a terrific endorsement of the policy which will address escalating player payments in community football. In other football news, female football is alive and well in country Victoria with the introduction of new women’s leagues being established across the state. Following the success of the inaugural AFL Women’s League, community football in Victoria is seeing more females lacing up the boots in season 2017 than ever before.
The work conducted by our regions with regard to the development of female football programs, participation, and competition management sets country football in good stead for continued growth of women’s football in the future. Finally, AFL Victoria is delighted to announce the top-ranked WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships match will be played at the MCG. Following the inaugural WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships last year, representative players in the number-oneranked Geelong Football Netball League will face second-placed Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League on Saturday May 13. The match will be played as a curtain-raiser to the Round 8 dedicated AFL Country Game between Essendon and Geelong. In addition, the 11 v 12 match between Hampden Football Netball League and South East Football Netball League will be also be played in Melbourne’s sporting precinct at the Holden Centre. This is a fantastic occasion for some of community football’s best senior players to run out and showcase their skills on the game’s biggest stage and provide the opportunity for city and country football fans to come together and celebrate all that is good in country football. Last but not least I would like to wish all players, coaches, umpires, volunteers and administrators the best of luck for the season ahead- I hope it is a successful one for all involved.

2017 season preview by kain pollard
2017 brings us a wealth of opportunity from the unknown, the third year of the SEFNL sees 6 new coaches plus a heap of player personnel changes. It’s actually easier to mention, that only Narre’s Warren’s Heath Black, Tooradin’s Lachie Gillespie and last year’s premiership coach Cranbourne’s Simon Goosey remain in the top job. It’s been a quiet pre-season in terms of new recruits as many sides look to stabilise their list and build from within. Hampton Park and Pakenham on the other hand have lost a chunk of senior experienced players but this provides a chance for new players to get their chance to show their wares at senior level. Hampton Park will introduce some new faces who could bring a different edge to the side. For the first time since its inception SEFNL have lost more players then the clubs have gained with many leaving to play football in other competitions like the Southern FL and West Gippsland FL. This will test the clubs depth but as we have seen, our competition has been flushed with junior talent and now they get the chance to show their wares. Some clubs welcome back club greats, others will be looking for new recruits to shine. Aaron Davey will pile his trade as senior coach; can he be the one to take Doveton’s game to new heights? On paper they have one of the strongest lists. It’s time for Doveton to leave their mark on the competition, with new recruit Ex-Beacy forward Taylor Joyce moving to the Doves, we can expect him to have an immediate impact in the forward line. Officer is another intriguing proposition this season as they welcome the dynamic coaching duo of Cranbourne premiership coach Doug Koop and his sidekick Billy King. They haven’t been as prominent in the recruitment stakes but the inclusion of experienced former Redbacks
players Luke Nunan and Cory Phillips could be the spice they need to move up the ladder. One team who has been again busy bolstering its ranks is Tooradin. The Gulls have been searching for a replacement for their 2015 star Matthew Wade. They will be relying on the luck of the Irish to move up the ladder. The introduction of the O’Hailpin brothers could see a change of fortunes for the boys from Westernport Oval. Sentata will play more of a cameo this season as the green and red look to start their season in a positive way. The new season always brings its own air of excitement with teams building towards the first Saturday in April. An early win can propel the clubs onto the right path. With so many questions still to be answered it’s going to be another great season of SEFNL footy.

BEACONSFIELD V BERWICK – HOLM PARK RESERVE, BEACONSFIELD Beaconsfield – Preliminary Finalists v Berwick – Grand Finalists Last Time – Preliminary Final – Berwick 21.17.143 def Beaconsfield 10.10.70 The tone will be set early when the longest rivalry in local football face-off against each other to open the season. The Battle of the Creek will welcome the new season as the 2014 and 2015 premiers do battle with new coaches guiding their charges. Beaconsfield have had their sights set on this one all pre-season while Berwick have dusted themselves off after a disappointing finish to last season. Berwick should have the upper hand but it’s always difficult to write Beacy off at home especially with a new coach and sense of optimism. Berwick by 21 points
CRANBOURNE V HAMPTON PARK – CASEY FIELDS
TOORADIN V PAKENHAM – TOORADIN RESERVE, TOORADIN Tooradin 8th v Pakenham 6th Last Time – Tooradin 9.9.63 lost to Pakenham 10.9.69 Tooradin v Pakenham will be an intriguing stoush with one team looking to have improved its ranks with the other struggling for numbers late in the off season. Tooradin have always promised to be a side to take the next step and push the top sides in the competition but have struggled when the whips are cracking. The Seagulls get a great chance to start the season on the right foot with a win at home to start the season. Pakenham’s new coach Ash Green will have a new regime in place but it could take a while for the Lions to find their feet. Tooradin by 13 points.

Cranbourne will unfurl its premiership flag against Hampton Park. Cranbourne have dominated their opposition of late, Cranbourne accounted for Hampton Park quite easily last season with successive 100 point wins. It will take a gigantic effort for the new look Redbacks to knock them over at home. It’s a bit of wait and see with Hampton Park, early pre-season reports say they were struggling for numbers but a change of luck has seen the Red and Black attract a group of untapped talent from other leagues who won’t be shackled by previous season’s disappointments. Onwards and Upwards for Hampton Park but they will need an easier task to rate their development. Cranbourne by 56 points.
Doveton welcome Officer in the final game of Round 1. Both teams will be headed by new coaches, ‘The Flash’ Aaron Davey steps into his first head coaching role while most local football experts will be quite familiar with Doug Koop a former premiership coach at Cranbourne. Doveton have recruited well again to bolster an impressive core, if the Doves bring their best on game day they will be hard to beat at home. Officer have a compliment of blue collar hardworking types who find themselves amongst the action every week. Koop will bring a hard-nosed approach to a team looking to improve. Doveton in a thriller. Doveton by 7 points.

doveton The Doveton Football Netball Club would like to welcome all players, members and supporters to the 2017 season. We have had a really successful, strong and focused preseason so far which I am sure will continue throughout into the season. Welcome: Doveton is fortunate enough to welcome on board the fast paced and explosive Alwyn “Froggy” Davey. Alwyn is the brother of Aaron Davey and played for Essendon between 2007 – 2012. We also welcome another big name recruit in Gach Nyuon who stands at 201cm tall. Gach represented Essendon as a rookie in the 2015 draft, Dandenong Stingrays and Vic Country. Onto our local talent we welcome on board Taylor Joyce and Clay McCartney. Joyce is an exceptional young 20 year old who has won league medals at 18 years old followed by a premiership in 2014. McCartney has represented Vic Country and played in the TAC Cup for the Dandenong Stringrays. He has also represented Richmond and Frankston at VFL level. Coaches: We congratulate and welcome our newly appointed senior playing coach Aaron “Flash” Davey. Aaron has played 178 AFL games for the Melbourne Football Club and played a huge part in the senior playing group for the 2016 season. Aaron has exceptional skillset, experience and professionalism and is highly respected by all around the club. He will be assisted by Graham Henwood who comes with a wealth of knowledge of local football and talent.
Our reserves side has seen the appointment of a club veteran, Chris Rodriquez. Chris has been a key fundamental player in the reserves side for many years now and will no doubt succeed in his newly appointed role. Our under 19’s side has also seen Nathan Wilson take charge this season. We wish all coaches, assistants and players all the very best for the season. Sponsors: A huge welcome to all our major sponsors Conway Cranes, Highway Tyres, Doveton FoodWorks, Metro Mix Concrete and R&A Concreting for the 2017 season. Apparel: Any players, members or supporters who wish to purchase any apparel please see Jude Warkuss. Jude will be at the club every Thursday night between 7pm – 8pm and at all home games between 11am and 1pm. Off the field: Next week see’s us travel up the road to take on Hampton Park in our annual Good Friday Match. Afterwards we will be hosting our “Full Moon Party” which will sure to be a crowd pleaser.

Officer Welcome to all members, players, supporters and sponsors to season 2017. A lot has happened at the Club since the end of last season - we have a new Senior Coach in Doug Koop who has brought with him two new Assistant Coaches in Matt Jones (playing) and Bill King (non-playing). Welcome gents and we hope you enjoy your time at Officer. There are a host of new players joining us this year and we look forward to a successful season both on and off the field. Another exciting development in 2017 is the addition to our Club of a women’s team under the coaching of Siobhan O’Dwyer. Welcome to all the new players and supporters associated with the women’s team, we hope you enjoy the season and your time at Officer.
The ROC FC Past Players and Officials Group will be very active again in 2017, operating from their comfortable facilities towards the northern end of the ground at our home games. The group provides valuable support to the Club as well as the opportunity to meet and enjoy the games with fellow members and supporters. This year they will again be running their Punters Club, the Royal Roos coterie group, Past Players Day (on Apr 29 vs Hampton Park) as well as BBQ’s at home games and many other activities. In future notes we will try to keep you up-todate with Club news and activities. If you’ve got any questions or suggestions please see one of the Committee members.
The Club Executive is unchanged with President Barry, Secretary John and Treasurer Julie continuing their roles from 2016. Nick McLennan has joined the Committee as Football Operations Manager to assist in the operations side of the Club and liaise between the playing/coaching staff and the administrative side of things. We welcome our sponsors and members back again and hope that we can give you good value for your support throughout the season, and we hope to see you at as many games and functions as possible.

beaconsfield Welcome back to the 2017 season. What a big off season it has been for our club with a number of changes, but nothing bigger than the recruitment of a new coaching panel headed up by Leigh McQuillan (Macca)supported by a wonderful bunch of coaches. Justin Stanton brings a lot of senior football experience to head up our star studded reserves line up and welcome also to Luke Young who is taking on the under 19s team and a massive welcome to Scott Hilton (Hiltsy) as our women’s senior coach The boys have had a very big preseason and have worked exceptionally hard to learn the new game plan structures and the development of each other as a united team. Our numbers this year are fantastic where we have full numbers across all teams which is brilliant, allowing Macca and team to really build a great relationship. Results in the practice matches were excellent by all teams and we now look forward to our round 1 clash vs Berwick in the traditional “Battle Of The Creek” is wonderfully sponsored by Russell and Steve from Tip Top Roofing and has been for many years. berwick It hasn’t taken long has it. Autumn is upon us and the season proper is ready to kick off. It’s the Battle of the Creek, a rivalry steeped in tradition and one that I as a kid had fond memories of growing up. I recall watching some of the Berwick Champions of the past in Nisbet, Evans, Trigg and Gehling battling it out in the biggest home and away game of the fixture. Being the first game of the year it has become a measuring stick of how both clubs have prepared in the off season. This coupled with The Battle of the Creek Cup, The Frank Elliot shield and local bragging rights until the next games always means neither team leaves anything in the rooms. Whilst the grounds have only just officially been handed back to the football clubs, goal posts put back in and the white lines painted, the players have been hard at it training since October. With new coaches in all grades, a revamped committee and upgraded social rooms there is plenty of excitement heading into 2017. We have been working hard on and off the field to ensure we remain a competitive club in 2017. Oddly enough recruitment was not a major factor in the off season. We have a plethora of young talent coming up through
the juniors and we believe it is their time to shine. It is a philosophy that underpinned our improvement over the last 4-5 years and we are confident the same approach will bide well for us in the future. Having said that we have seen a few new players come into the team in 2017 and to you I offer a big welcome to Berwick. To all teams I wish you a fantastic season; work hard and have fun. To the netballers, all the best. Your long term approach to junior development is fantastic and will pay dividends. Most importantly a big welcome and thank you to the sponsors. To those returning it is great to have you back on board. To the new sponsors for 2017, thanks for getting on board. Enjoy the journey. REMINDER TONIGHT DJ NIGHT AT THE ROOMS. 7PM ONWARDS. 2017 season netball preview by kain pollard
It’s been a different build up to the season with so much Netball already played. Last year’s premiers Narre Warren represented the SEFNL in the Netball Victoria League Club Challenge making it through to the semi-finals going down to eventual champions Kangaroo Flat. The junior representative girls did us proud at the tournament at Heatherton. The girls have had long preseasons and will champing at the bit to hit the courts. Beaconsfield look well set for a bumper season welcoming back Jasmine Jones (Maddocks) and have recruited some ready-made players who will help the Eagles to take the next step. Berwick coming off a disappointing campaign have lost some experience including the ‘heart and soul’ of the club Sarah McDermott. This will provide plenty of opportunity for the Wickers to stand up and take on more responsibilities, but you can expect a few new faces to have an impact as they look to climb the ladder. Cranbourne have some real talent at their disposal as reflected by some impressive performances last year. The Eagles haven’t recruited as much as other sides as they look to build from within and become a finals threat. Doveton could be a team to watch with a new head coach and have recruited some top end talent to bolster their ranks. The Doves also have some young guns coming through to add depth to their seniors if required. Hampton Park’s revolving door has had an impact on their Netball side as well, but under the tutelage of Kylie Kibble - The Redbacks have plenty at their disposal. It might take the girls a few weeks to gel but going on performances of last year Hampton Park should be up towards the top of the ladder. The undefeated Narre Warren will be looking to continue their impressive run. Greg and Jade Heinrich have taken Netball coaching in the region to a new level. Jade will be unavailable for parts of the season as she welcomes a new born but this shouldn’t hamper the girls development. Adele
Clydesdale will be unavailable due to VNL duties but this gives an opportunity for their talent to step up and fill the gap. Pakenham have brought in a new coach Karen Meredith and will be supported by a returning crop of talented stars. Coming off a season where the Lions slipped off the pace, they will be looking to bounce back quickly. The girls from Toomuc may not have the big names but they have the depth to remain competitive. ROC have always been a strong unit and a flock of returning stars could have the Kangas surprising a few. The Kangas have had a long pre-season with plenty of numbers on the court as they look to take their game to a new level. Kelly Haynes the coach of Tooradin achieved so much last season. After not winning a game in 2015 the Tooradin girls managed to upset quite a few and make it to the first week of finals. Tooradin have developed their game off the court which is reflected in their sharp rise and with some handy recruiting the Gulls should be pushing the best in the competition.

beaconsfield The Beaconsfield Netball Club are very excited for the 2017 SEFNL season to begin. Our preseason has been a positive & encouraging time at Beacy. It has been great to see those who are passionate about wearing the blue & gold return, but also welcome lots of fresh new faces to our club. We would like to thank all our coaches for their commitment to their teams & players during the pres-season, to committee members for all their behind the scenes work & to our life members group who are always wanting to help. Round 1 sees Beaconsfield take on Berwick at home for the always anticipated “Battle of the Creek. It will be a day filled with excitement, nerves and pride as both clubs look to claim the wins in the season opener, and we also unveil our three premiership flags from last year for our U13s, U15s & U17s! Good luck to all our teams and welcome back to game day to all our families & friends! Go Beacy!!

berwick With a record turnout for try outs at Berwick this season, we have seen substantial growth within our ranks, at both the Junior & Senior levels, to embark upon the 2017 season. A new found feeling and atmosphere was spreading through out the club as our preseason started early and continued with that positive BNC feeling, with a warm regard for all taking court, from 15’s right through to A Grade. With our Head Coach, Janine Kilmartin, heading most of our sessions, a big thankyou goes out to our other assistants, Theresa Santamaria, Nick Macente and Nicole Green, for providing their time and support with their PT expertise.
and skill between our two clubs and we hope these matches show nothing less. This year we showcase the future of both clubs, with a demonstration game from our 11 & u teams playing between the B & A Grade matches. A great way to show our younger girls just the kind of netballers and people they look up to and where they are headed within our clubs. We wish both clubs luck for the day and look forward to the festivities.
Berwick Club / Family Day brought the netball community together by supporting our fellow player across the creek, in Ciara Nelson, in her fight with Cancer. All proceeds of the day were donated to getting Ciara & her family to see Charles Teo in Sydney just last month. We wish her the very best and all our support as she continues on this fight! The A/B squad girls were given a great oppurtunity to play in the Dandenong Lightning Cup Competition over the past 7 weeks, providing invaluable court time and a great way for the girls to familiarize themselves on court. Finals will be next Monday so we wish the girls the best of luck, both going in top 4 positions. Todays Round 1 opener for Battle of the Creek against Beaconsfield, is one of our biggest of the season, we have a fantastic friendship off the court, but take the battle to the court with every Wicker dress we wear. It always proves to be a great display of sportsmanship

Tooradin-dalmore How quickly Round One has come around! We hope everyone has enjoyed their break and getting back into training for pre season. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome all new players, families and supporters to our great club and trust you will enjoy the season at our great club. It has been a busy off season at Tooradin with many reasons to celebrate. Congratulations to four of our players who have announced pregnancies over the off season in Katie Leslie and Cam Darby, Kym and Leigh Jose, Tara and Jeremy Smith and last but not least Julia and Mick Hobbs adding twins to the mix! Congratulations also go to Leanne and Grant Ansalde who welcomed baby Ava to our seagull family and to newly weds Kelly Haynes and Ben Andrews! While everyone seems to have been busy off the court we have also been working hard on the court with all players completing an incredible pre season and looking forward to our first hit out against Pakenham today.

PAKENHAm Under the guidance and leadership from the club’s newly appointed Head Coach, Karen Meredith, the Pakenham Lions Netball Club has had a structured and well organised pre-season. We sincerely thank Bec McSweeny for all her efforts in providing the club again with another dynamic fitness, strength and conditioning program over this period for our players. As well as intensive netball training sessions delivered by both our senior and junior coaches, the club welcomed Pearcedale Netball club for a day of practice matches finished off with a bbq lunch, our juniors attended the Waverley club tournament and we capped off with

doveton Welcome to the 2017 season to all players, members and supporters. Firstly congratulations to everyone who has been offered a spot to represent the Doveton Football Netball Club for the 2017 season. Our 2016 season saw 7 out of 10 netball sides reach the final series with 4 of those sides advancing to play off in the semi-finals. Whilst we didn’t achieve what we had set out to accomplish, we have channelled all of that into our preseason which is to set the way for a positive, disciplined and focused 2017 season.
We have been so fortunate to have back on board Liz Edwards who will be our head A & B coach. We also welcome Jay Peterson who has put his hand up to coach C Grade alongside the reappointment of Melinda Wilson for the D Grade side. Our junior sides look skilful, strong and ready to tackle to season head on. This week we welcome ROC Netball Club to our home which I’m sure will prove to showcase some amazing netball to kick start the season off with. On behalf of the players, coaches and committee we wish you all the best for the 2017 season. Go Doves!
